Speaker 6 (00:35):
Dan, We've been having a lot of fun so far.
We were in earlier for Doug Gottlieb, and you had
two more hours to go. A lot to talk about
with the NBA, NFL, and really our habits. I think
Gavino and Rich do this so well. They bring lifestyle
into the conversation, really and sitting down and watching an
NBA game. Apparently it's been more of a lifestyle lately,
so let's get into it.
Speaker 5 (00:56):
Why not?
Speaker 4 (00:57):
And I think there's several reasons as to why the
NBA is doing so well. To start off, the season now,
be sure to check out the brand new YouTube channel.
Just search Cavino and rich FSR on YouTube. Again, that's
Cavino and rich FSR. But there is a brand new
YouTube channel.
Speaker 6 (01:11):
And with the YouTube channel, you can usually see the guys.
You can see Danny g. You can see Spot, you
can see me or Mancy if we're at the news desk.
But today Isaac long On Crown is at the news desk. Hello, Isaac,
how's it going?
Speaker 7 (01:23):
I had to pream just in case we're on camera
here as it relates to our discussion earlier, your discussion
earlier about people who wear sneakers with their suits, by the.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
Way, which I have no problem with at all, but
you did not like I don't like that.
Speaker 6 (01:36):
Yeah, I had an issue you did.
Speaker 5 (01:38):
I get it.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
I understand, I have no problem with it, but I
have a problem with the hoodie and a blazer. We
don't just have Isaac Lohencron here, we have our producer
Bo Benson. All right, Bo, well, Bo excited that Lebron
James is back for his Lakers.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Sure, let's go with that.
Speaker 6 (01:51):
Sure bringing the energy?
Speaker 8 (01:53):
So I was gonna sell just seriously, I wanted to
make the point. I wanted to make the point earlierhen
were talking about shoes. I was going to say the
trump card for me was going to be Johnny Knoxville
got married this weekend. And I'm like, if anybody's getting
married and chucks, it's Johnny Knoxville. Sure, So I looked
it up and he was wearing he was wearing loafers
for this wedding.
Speaker 6 (02:13):
I'm wearing good shoes. That's a trump card. That's my
trump by the way, that's my tru Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:18):
I was in a short loafers are loafers considered?
Speaker 2 (02:21):
They were like loafers.
Speaker 6 (02:23):
Fine, may not work, but at least it's not right
Air Force Ones.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
I I rather.
Speaker 4 (02:28):
I think I rather take Air Force Ones and the loafers.
And we have Ryan Smith on the Ones into.
Speaker 6 (02:32):
It's Papa Bear, and I took my shoes off. Actually,
he's got like eight different names. We could draw the hat,
we could do the wrestling name if we wanted to.
We got also do under the weather. Ryan today.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Yes, I'm sorry, but still.
Speaker 6 (02:47):
Battling because he wanted to hang out with us today.
Speaker 5 (02:48):
Of course, of course, So Dan, how much MBA have
you watched?
Speaker 9 (02:52):
So?
Speaker 6 (02:53):
Yeah, So I caught some flak because I said I
haven't been locked into the NBA. It doesn't mean that
I don't know what's going on with the v I
felt like I was more in the minority than maybe
the majority is because we had heard reports and even
last I'll give Covino and Rich credit. Even a week
or two ago they were talking about on how things
with the NBA had such a feel good feel if
you will, to the season, and then numbers came out
(03:15):
last week and backed it up. And I think there
are a bunch of theories why, But just to give
you the numbers the NBA regular season games we found
out last week, we're averaging about two million viewers across
all of their platforms. That's up thirty six percent from
a year ago. Games on NBA TV where you have
to feel actively fined, like a lot of people just
(03:38):
have it on NBC and guess what if there's a
game on Tuesday night, there ending up watching the game.
ESPN the same thing. But if you're going to NBA TV,
you're searching it out, You're wanting to have that product.
They were up seventy four percent from a year ago.
So the viewership numbers across the board for the NBA,
very very good and what's been the first month of
the season.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
And I think it's of a variety of things, right,
I think people at the start of any season, you're excited.
That just happens.
Speaker 5 (04:06):
I even think with like baseball.
Speaker 4 (04:07):
You know, once baseball gets going, you're excited. But you
look at the numbers. Maybe in June July there may
not be as high. So I think that's part of it.
You're excited the NBA season is here. I also, I
really do think it's that people are tuning in to
see the unks and the veteran players play more than
it is to see the youngins. To me, the youngins,
(04:29):
I'm not I'm not tuning in to watch Anthony Edwards.
He was already hurt, he already missed a couple of times.
Victor Ian Banyama he's out.
Speaker 6 (04:37):
Yeah, well now he's out.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
He hasn't and it's a It started off with calf soreness.
Now it's evolved to a calf strain and he's out
for several weeks. The the unks are playing and they're
playing really fun.
Speaker 6 (04:50):
I could I could not disagree more because I actually
think Lebron being out for the first month has helped
the NBA.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
I would not agree with.
Speaker 6 (05:02):
That, and he would be the unk of all unks,
And I get it, I'm the unk here, I'm older
than all of you. But he's a polarizing unk, yes,
and he sucks a lot of the energy.
Speaker 5 (05:11):
Absolutely absolutely, so you I agree with you. I think
that is a factor.
Speaker 6 (05:15):
So if Lebron's not there, we're talking more about the Lakers.
We're seeing Austin Reeves shine and not just one out
of the thirty teams. But I'm interested in hearing more
of your unk theory because I think the lack of
Lebron has actually helped the EDGA.
Speaker 4 (05:29):
What about the unk theory on the other side of
the screen, not the guy's playing, but the Dirk Nowitzki
and Blake Griffin who are covering it through Amazon Prime.
Speaker 6 (05:40):
I think that that has I think the overall changing
of the landscape. It still is weird to have ESPN
on and see an ESPN logo with Chuck, with Kenny
Shaq and Ernie. I will say this that my watching
of Inside the NBA has gone down because I'm still
(06:02):
I knew that on Thursday nights I could tune into TNT.
I still am trying to figure out where everything is
on what channel. And on Monday night, I was looking
for an NBA game after the Cowboys is during the
Cowboys Raiders game, just to see what else was on,
Like where do I have to go for this? And
where do I have to find this? Where do I go?
(06:22):
Last night it's the Peacock NBC game, where if you're
on the East Coast you get the early game on TV,
if you're on the West Coast you get the late
game on TV. So I'm still sorting out all of that.
But I like the newness of it. So the technology
I've heard from people who have consumed it has been refreshing.
I think the analysis has been refreshing from the newer voices,
(06:47):
and I think that's actually a bit of an indictment
on what ESPN and ABC had done to the product.
We would always go to TNT to search out that game,
but if it's not on it was on ESPN, and
really it wasn't on ABC earlier in the season. There
were no weeknight games that we had on network television
(07:07):
during the ABC ESPN product previously, and now when it's
on NBC, when you have maybe a bit of nostalgia
bringing it back. I think that is a big role
of it, and by all accounts what Amazon has provided
with their package, it seems to be more of a
refreshing discussion than what we had on the previous ESPN broadcast.
Speaker 5 (07:27):
I think you're actually make some really good points.
Speaker 4 (07:29):
The newness of the people talking about the sport is
maybe what's bringing people in to start. Like you said,
it's not easy to catch a game, and I.
Speaker 5 (07:36):
Don't think there is.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
Is there a set rhyme or reason as to when
you're going to see the guys on ESPN? Is it
every single game or is it you know, the inside
the NPA guys that are now on ESPN, like we.
Speaker 5 (07:47):
Knew when they were going to come out.
Speaker 4 (07:48):
I don't know if there is a set schedule for
them or a rhyme or reason when they come out,
or if it's just kind of like, oh, they're covering
this game in this game.
Speaker 5 (07:55):
But could it be that you're not listening to Steven A.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
Smith and the and Kendrick Perkins just saying three words
while they go to a commercial, Like every time I'd
watch those games, like you guys say three words and
then it's advertisement, advertisement, advertisement. It doesn't feel like that
now with these other platforms.
Speaker 6 (08:13):
Correct, there's more substance to it, and that's more of
an ESPN problem than it would be for the specific personalities.
And I get that Stephen A is polarizing and he's
an easy target.
Speaker 5 (08:25):
But he's the face of it, right like for the
Yes it was.
Speaker 6 (08:27):
Now he's been taking off NBA Countdown and isn't in
that sort of role. They also made changes with their
with their main group and main booth with taking outdoors
Burke and putting Tim Legler in, so they've they've made changes,
but I think that I think that there is whether
it's fair or not. There was this feel of ESPN
(08:50):
and ABC of being inferior to the TNT product. Okay,
and to your point on how the halftimes, which people
would make a point to say of, yeah, there was
eighty seconds of actual basketball content in the fifteen minute
halftime show that you had. That was not good and
(09:12):
that's not good for your brand. But what I think
NBC has done and Amazon Prime in how they have
been able to take the product and make it almost
feels new again. And it's funny because I would think
with NBC, there would be more people like me, more
people like Isaac and when you and Bo and Ryan
(09:34):
were growing up, the NBA on NBC is probably something
that you associated with in your childhood. But I felt
like it would be be more of the nostalgia aspect
to be like, oh, we love what NBC is doing.
But I don't think it's been that. I think people
like the refreshed look at it, so it's almost a
newness of it as opposed to the throwback from it.
(09:55):
And they know what ESPN did wrong. They know they
can't do a halftime and just get fifteen second sound
bites in. You have to do something differently, and I
think that is allowed fans to want to want to
ingest the content mormoncy even on a season where you
had an NBA Finals champion that nobody really cared about
(10:16):
uh huh in an NBA Finals series And this sounds
disrespectful to Oklahoma, c Indy and Indiana, but it's not
like we're coming off of a Laker Celtics or a
Warriors Celtics NBA Finals that is caring of who's going
to knock off who. Oklahoma City may run through this
whole thing considering how well that they've been playing. But
(10:37):
to have them be the champs, them continue their great
play and if people be more interested, I think it's
got to be the other factors.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Yeah, I totally agree on that side of things, because
people don't care for the Thunder, and you can argue
that it's because the foul merchant that has been deemed
Shake Gildes Alexander or small small market teams. But people
did not come back to start the season because you
wanted to see the Pacers and the Thunder see what
(11:04):
they're going to do this year.
Speaker 5 (11:05):
They came for the new stuff, and even.
Speaker 4 (11:07):
The Amazon Prime coverage of it, it looks like they're
hanging out in someone's living room and someone's like, you know,
like it's like a man cave, and I know, Taylor Rook,
Taylor Rooks, is that right?
Speaker 5 (11:19):
But they're not wearing suits.
Speaker 4 (11:21):
They're all casual and they're just kind of like talking
about it, And I wonder if that's part of the
the attractiveness of it, because it is very different. We're
literally talking about people being in studios and suits and
not wearing the proper shoe wear.
Speaker 5 (11:34):
They're wearing sneakers, but.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
They're also wearing you know, a shirt and like a
zip up, and they're not worried about it. They're keeping
it more casual. More come on in, let's chat about this.
Speaker 6 (11:44):
I also think that there's this formula and I'm not
sure what both things, or what Isaac things, or what
Ryan thinks, but ESPN had a formula where if you
look at their previous set, it's host so Malika Andrews,
steven a personality, Bob Myers, former GM let's have former
(12:04):
player Kendrick Perkins. Like you're trying to fill.
Speaker 5 (12:07):
Like you're checking off the buses.
Speaker 6 (12:09):
Yes, and sometimes if you just add stars familiar names,
it becomes empty. Which is what has made T and
T so great is Shaq was one of the biggest
names during his heyday, if not the biggest. Barkley was
a huge name, and they bring the goods. But we're
familiar with Blake Griffin, We're familiar with Dirk Novitzky, and
(12:30):
even in you know, like adding Jamal Crawford to broadcast, like,
we're familiar with these guys. And I feel like you
need a connection to the game, and you need a
connection to the game at the highest of levels, and
they have played at the highest of levels. And it's
not that Kendrick Perkins, who did win an NBA title
with the Boston Celtics, But Kendrick Perkins was not Kevin Garnett. Correct,
(12:51):
So Dirk is Dirk, so Dirk and carry his own.
It's actually why some people don't like Wing Gretzky on
the NHL T and T broadcast, And I will hang
on every word that he says because it's Wayne Gretzky,
and I actually think that he does a better job
than what maybe people give him credit for because there
are a couple of times where he's hit on stuff
and it's like yeah, because he's been at the highest
(13:12):
of hyghes, he knows what is happening in those situations.
So I think that helps Amazon as well.
Speaker 4 (13:17):
And with Blake Griffin, it's like he didn't he never won,
but he was the guy, like he was the guy
on a team, unlike Kendrick Perkins. Like you're saying like
he's been there, he's been there. But it's also more
of a relatable player because he never got to the championship,
you know what, or even a conference finals, so he's
almost relatable and then you have the champion.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
Yeah, I the newness. I think you're you're selling me more.
Speaker 4 (13:40):
But I really do think that the the legendary names
are a reason why people are coming back to watch
just to see what. You don't know how much longer
cre He's gonna play. You don't know how much longer
James Harden is gonna play. You don't know how much.
Speaker 6 (13:52):
I really think that people are tuning in to see
James Harden play, though I think that they would with
Steph Steph one.
Speaker 4 (13:59):
But I do think James Harden is maybe because I'm
obviously a Clipper found but he is definitely putting up
the numbers.
Speaker 6 (14:04):
Were playing well. I just don't think he brings people
in like someone like Wemby. For as much of a
freak as we think he is, I think that there's
a decent amount of the casual basketball audience that really
hasn't watched him. Absolutely, and now when you see the
stuff that he's doing, and I always developed now in
his third year and doing the things he's doing, it
(14:26):
must watch TV like the Spurs Lakers game and again
sans Lebron, but with Luca and Wemby had the top
You know audience, you know, for a week of all
the games, like one point five to six million people
you know watch that game according to Sports Media Watch,
So you've got so there's even that factor of the newness.
(14:46):
That's why I don't think it's the ONNX. I think
it's some of the the young, the new, the fresh
of the NBA that's helped them so far this season.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
I bet you that Lakers Spurs game though people tune
in to watch Luca.
Speaker 6 (14:58):
Yeah, but I think he's a part of it as well.
Speaker 4 (15:01):
Yeah, I just I'm I'm just more agreeing with you that, Like,
I don't think people are tuning in to watch Victor
even though you probably should. I think Luca in La
is yes to me.
Speaker 8 (15:13):
The thing like you were talking about with the studio shows,
I think it's very refreshing to hear guys talk about
basketball and actually like talking about basketball.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Yeah, I think we all.
Speaker 8 (15:23):
Got really conditioned to assume that it's Oh, it's Chuck
and Shack and they're just gonna they're just gonna, Yeah,
they're just gonna talk bad about all these guys, and
Shack's gonna make fun of guys and they're gonna tell
you how much it sucked to watch that. Blah blah
blah blah. Is Dirk and and Blake Griffin. They'll talk
positively and they'll and specific they'll show you, yeah, and
they'll draw plays. It's it's much more refreshing to watch.
(15:44):
You've just been so condenned, Like everyone assumed that Michael
Jordan's bit was just gonna be him dumping on players
and the stuff that he's done. He's, of course, Jordan
is going to praise guys like he's never I don't
want to get this idea where people think Jordan is
like turbo hater Charles Barklay. Like He's talked positively about
a ton of guys since he saw playing And I
think he's just been refreshing to watch that, and it
(16:05):
makes me want to watch basketball more often.
Speaker 6 (16:07):
Yeah, but the Jordan thing is not what we all thought.
Speaker 5 (16:08):
It was going to be, not at all.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
You probably record he probably recorded those all.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
Yeah, absolute he did. Yes.
Speaker 6 (16:15):
And And the point about the Spurs Lakers thing is
I get Luca and the draw of the Lakers that's
always going to be there. To have the Spurs be
the opponent with the biggest, most watched game is what.
I don't know who the Lakers had in the schedule
that week, but to your guys point, then the Lakers
(16:36):
broadcast should have been up. But then why is the
Spurs one number one? And I think it's because of
when Ben Yamen honestly, for the highlights that we've seen
before he went out with his calf injury. I mean,
the Duncan Draymond what what when b YadA did the
first week of the season, Like, those are the those
are the highlights that we're seeing. But do you really
think that the Chuck in Shack negativity has put this cloud?
Speaker 10 (17:00):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (17:00):
I hate it.
Speaker 4 (17:03):
I do think it has affected the way people look
at the NBA.
Speaker 6 (17:08):
Yes, And so if you're going on there glowingly not
giving real analysis and I'm not saying that they aren't,
but trying to make it a positive experience, you feel
that that's that's good for the NBA.
Speaker 5 (17:19):
Yeah, especially like I I like the NBA.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
So you telling me that the product sucks, I know
it's not that good, but that I don't need you
to tell me this every single game.
Speaker 8 (17:28):
You never hear Tom Brady go on the broadcast on
Sunday and just be like this product is terrible. He
could be watching the Raiders play and you would not
say anything negative about something they're doing. He owns a team,
so he can't.
Speaker 6 (17:40):
But he's also in an in game broadcast.
Speaker 8 (17:42):
Yes, you don't hear baseball guys really talk about how
bad the sport is. Like I just it's a unique
thing with the NBA that I don't understand.
Speaker 6 (17:50):
Whether they're calling a spade a spade if that's what
the reality is it is.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
But but we're still playing, so you might as stop
saying it's are you. Can you refresh your thoughts and
give me specifics as to what just happened in this
game instead of you just giving me the over line. Well,
the play is not as good, the level of basketball
is not as good because nobody plays defense. It's evolving.
It's a lot of high scoring. So let's you already
(18:17):
told me that. I already know that, but let's still
dive into and dissect this products that's in front of us.
Speaker 6 (18:22):
I said that the NBA did not want to re
up with TNT because they didn't and I felt that
it was the ABC ESPN window of it, because I
felt that they're broadcast was always inferior to what TNT did,
which then lends to the point that TNT just had
this absurd amount of power and influence to the audience
because of what Chuck and Shack says. I hear all
(18:45):
that you're saying. Now we're at a point where TNT's
out the window, but you still have these two voices
that they're now on ABC and the ESPN portion of it.
Those voices haven't gone away. But to your guys point, now,
at least there's other voices on a higher platform that
are at least trying to conflict or at least mix
(19:06):
with these other voices.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
Because it's like, we know the product is done, but
it doesn't matter. They're still playing, and we give me
something else.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
A month in with the ratings being at any point
where you can be like ratings are are up, they're
up from a year ago, is good, especially when it's
the newness of it. I don't want to say, come
back to me in January and February.
Speaker 5 (19:28):
But come back to me in January.
Speaker 3 (19:29):
Here.
Speaker 6 (19:30):
Yeah, let's let's see how this moment tom me. And
by the way, I hope it does. Yeah, for sure,
I hope that. I hope that it does continue with that,
and we'll have to see if the other shows end
up gaining traction. But I just I think that I
think it's the the young I really think women Yama
has like a big role in it, and maybe now
Sga is becoming more of a performer. I don't like.
(19:50):
I don't think Kevin Durant with the Rockets, despite the
Rockets playing good basketball, has made people like ooh, I
want to check that out.
Speaker 5 (19:57):
Yeah, but that's because people don't like Kevin Durant.
Speaker 6 (19:59):
Maybe maybe yeah, it's.
Speaker 5 (20:02):
Like he's great, he's great, but people just are not
a fan of Kevin Durant.
Speaker 6 (20:06):
Sure, And I think that of the old the old
heads every like people are cheering, people are cheering for Steph,
Like they're not cheering for Lebron, They're not cheering for Durant.
They're gonna cheer for Steph Curry. That's the old head.
Speaker 5 (20:17):
They're gonna absolutely.
Speaker 6 (20:19):
So, Hey, kudos to the NBA for a good month. Yeah,
we'll see if it continues.
Speaker 5 (20:25):
We'll check back in in January February.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Yeah.

Well, it's a Covino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk
life and relationships, and if Rich and I are arguing
about something or we didn't have enough time, it will
continue on our after show called over Promised.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
Well, if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make
sure you check out over promised and also uncensored by
the way, so maybe we'll go at it even a
little harder. It's gonna be the best after show podcast
of all time.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
There you go, over promising. Remember you could see on YouTube,
but definitely join us. Listen over promised with Covino and
Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you
get your podcasts.
Speaker 5 (22:59):
Welcome back, allry buddy Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 4 (23:02):
You are tuning in to Cavino and Rich, but the
fell is covered for Dan Patrick this morning, So Dan
Byer and me Monty Bolanos get to hang out with
you for the next ninety minutes or so.
Speaker 6 (23:13):
Ninety minutes plus. They're on Fox Sports Radio. And the
Lakers got a plus last night with the addition of
Lebron James leading us to our play of the day
James bullets.
Speaker 5 (23:29):
The buzzard good.
Speaker 6 (23:31):
Sir oh he twelve assists last night to go along
with his eleven points as the Lakers get that win.

Speaker 4 (24:00):
It's convenient that it's a Laker highlight when our producer
is Bo Benson.
Speaker 6 (24:03):
Absolutely what it was. You knew that's where we were going.
Speaker 2 (24:07):
Yeah, what would you have preferred?
Speaker 6 (24:10):
Troy's upset of chanting state last night and double overtime.
What a barn burner that was. But setting shockwaves across
the Mountain West conference. Isaac long Crown always sends shockwaves
when he hits the mike. You'll do so right now,
giving us the latest of what's happening.
Speaker 7 (24:26):
Well, take note, listeners in Ohio, because the Cincinnati Bengals
listed Joe Burrow as a full participant in practice today
is by missing the last eight games due to a
toe injury. Bengals quarterback Joe Flacco listed as a limited
participant in practice today because of a right shoulder injury.
Here is what Bengals head coach Zach Taylor had to
(24:46):
say to the media prior to today's practice.
Speaker 9 (24:49):
You can certainly get a lot of work in with
Joe today, Joe Burrow today because Flacco's not practicing because
the plan has been getting into eleven to eleven so
it works well, We're not trying to balance the guy
who was going to practice on a Wednesday. Joe Flacco
hasn't done that. We got to think of another way
to communicate this because the two Joes that really is
just this harder every week that passes.
Speaker 7 (25:09):
And by the way, stay tuned for further discussion of
the Joe Burrow Joe Flacco situation on Fox Sports Radio,
including tomorrow on Two Pros and a Cup of Joe. Anyway,
the Cleveland Browns have named rookie Shador Sanders their starting
quarterback for Sunday's game at Las Vegas. Jets head coach
Aaron Glenn announced to Rod Taylor will start a quarterback
Sunday against the Ravens. Falcons confirmed quarterback Michael Pennix Junior
(25:33):
will need season ending surgery for a partially torn left ACL. Finally,
in college football, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian addressed rumors
of him potentially leaving Texas today on the SEC coach's
weekly media conference call.
Speaker 2 (25:50):
I'm not going anywhere.
Speaker 10 (25:51):
I've had no discussions, not with my agent, not with
the university, not with any other school, not with any
NFL team about ever going anywhere else.
Speaker 6 (26:01):
I came here to win championships.
Speaker 10 (26:03):
So moving forward, when some Joe Blow decides to put
something on social media out there, we all don't run
with it like it's the gospel. Can we all agree
on that? And if you have a question about my
future with the University of Texas, ask me, ask Krystal Connie.
He'll be more than happy to take your call so
that we can sect the record street so we can
(26:24):
focus on our football team, which is really what we
should be doing.
Speaker 7 (26:27):
So that's what's trending, Dan and Monse, Joe Burrow, Joe Flacco,
and Joe Blow on social media.
Speaker 6 (26:35):
Back to you for the hat trick.
Speaker 5 (26:36):
Yeah, why did he sound so mad?
Speaker 6 (26:39):
Isn't that because it it?
Speaker 5 (26:42):
He sounds so annoyed.
Speaker 6 (26:43):
Well, because it's probably the work of other schools trying
to connect the dots in terms of recruits and players
in trying to say, look, hey, you should probably come
to our school. See Steve Sarkisyan's I even going to
be there. He's going to be going to the New
York Giants. Hey, reporter, guess what I've heard the Jackson
(27:05):
Dart you know sort of deal. If they can't get Kiffin,
Sarkisian is going to go to New York and try
to like those are those are the conversations that that
you have. And so then now Sarkisian looks like if
a recruit's like, oh, you're even going to be going,
it's one of the reasons why they get so much.
Speaker 4 (27:20):
And I hear what you're saying, But again, why are
you surprised that this is what's happening?
Speaker 5 (27:24):
No, No, I don't think he is surprised, but sounding
upset about it.
Speaker 6 (27:27):
It's going to be mad.
Speaker 5 (27:28):
It just sounds and he just sounds mad.
Speaker 4 (27:31):
And there's been a lot of quarterback carousel when it
comes to college of football Lane Kiffin at ole Miss.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
What they've lost one game? I think they're third in the.
Speaker 4 (27:40):
SEC, having a good having a good having a great season,
having a great season. There are reports rumors The Athletic
reported that ole Miss has given him like a like
a date, an ultimatum, ultimatum for him to decide whether
he's going to leave the Rebels and become a coach
at LSU or Florida, which I think is I don't
(28:01):
know what Lang Kevin is thinking, but I hope he's like,
absolutely not, I'm not going anywhere.
Speaker 6 (28:06):
I'll tell you what he's thinking. Because he was on
Pat McAfee yesterday. This is what he had to say.
That's absolutely not true. There's been no ultimating anything like
that at all, and so I don't know where that
came from. Like a lot of stuff that comes out there.
Speaker 5 (28:18):
Like I said, man, we're having a blast.
Speaker 6 (28:20):
I love it here. So I mean, I.
Speaker 4 (28:23):
Don't necessarily believe that there was no ultimatum.
Speaker 5 (28:27):
I think that's what he has to say, right, But
if you.
Speaker 4 (28:30):
Really look at it, it's kind of just like, why
would you leave Ole miss You have a good thing going,
you would have to go and fight at LSU?
Speaker 5 (28:41):
Okay? Do you do you want to make history or
do you want to rewrite history?
Speaker 6 (28:45):
Well, okay, tell me more like.
Speaker 4 (28:48):
With LSU, wouldn't he have to go in and rewrite
the history of LSU to become the man and become
the coach?
Speaker 6 (28:56):
Again, you're saying because editors are on, because less miles,
because Nick abeen all one national championships, that what are
you doing that hasn't been done exactly?
Speaker 4 (29:04):
You have a higher a higher road to climb in
order to put your name at the top of that mountain.
Speaker 6 (29:10):
Yes, and if you stayed at Ole Miss, you can
just continue to be the man.
Speaker 5 (29:14):
They just continue to be the man with your advisor.
Speaker 6 (29:18):
Your message of the grass isn't always greener, is what
you're trying to convey, But the money is because there's
just a lot more green.
Speaker 5 (29:28):
Okay, Okay, and.
Speaker 6 (29:29):
Listen, I get it, like I would love I would
love for that narrative to stay Manzi of Lane Kiffen
staying at ole Miss, Ole Miss. According to reports, he's
maybe be about a year old, but there's still they're
still fairly relevant. Here brings in about one hundred and
thirty three million dollars in total revenue. Okay as a school, Okay, LSU,
(29:53):
that's probably about thirtieth in the country, I believe. According yeah,
I was thirtieth at the time of these numbers that
were in twenty twenty five. LSU is six. They bring
in almost two hundred million dollars. Florida is eighth. You
have much more resources, You have the likelihood of the
access to players and I yel at those schools will
(30:15):
likely be more, and those schools will likely pay you more.
That's that's what it's That's truly what it's about, is
whether you want to go for the grass being greener
or the cash being greener. And it's very difficult, and Monti,
I'm actually going to make an example of why I
agree with you. Remember my golf club fitting this past summer.
(30:40):
I was so excited because I got fitted for irons.
And during this session that I got fitted, I was
hitting a certain club so well, so I made the
purchase of brand new irons. I cannot hit them worth
a lick. And in fact, I took them to the
(31:00):
guy that gives me lessons. He goes, these aren't even
fitted right for you because the fitting that you got,
the guys didn't do it correctly. We need to adjust
the lie angle on this because this isn't matching your swing.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
So I was remember how I.
Speaker 6 (31:15):
Remember how excited I was in showing you the numbers
and the bells and whistles. And I know, if you're
listening to this, you don't know what exactly I'm talking
about in my excitement of this, but I was very
excited to be like, wow, this is what's happening with
my golf swing. This is good. I've got a two
way miss right now. This will help some of that.
All of that being thrown in and it made me
(31:36):
want to go and dive in and make the investment
to get new golf clubs. And thank goodness I didn't
sell my old ones because I still have them in
my bag and those are the ones that I'm swinging
with right now. And it just goes to show that
maybe it wasn't too bad the way before. Now I'm sorry,
(31:58):
it is a different level. And that's with all due
respect to ole Miss. To think that link Kifn is
going to get the amount of financial support year after
year after year at ole Miss than he would at
Florida and LSU is probably not true Ole Miss as well.
Like link Kiffin's dealt with it in his time there,
they've had to deal with guys leaving for bigger schools
(32:19):
in the transfer portal. One of the bigger names was
Quinn Shawn Judkins, you know, not running back for the
for the Cleveland Browns, but he left Ole Miss ended
up going to Ohio State last year and winning a
national championship. That's probably not happening at Florida, and it's
probably not happening at LSU that players are going to
be in that position because those players, by the way,
will also be making more money in those situations. So
(32:42):
I get it. I get the whole grass is not
always greener. And it's easy for Steve Sarkisian to say
that considering Texas's total revenues are two hundred and forty
million dollars, basically top two in the country, them in
Ohio state the biggest two revenue drawers. But that's that's
why he's thinking entertaining it. Yeah, and and in a
(33:05):
way that you almost have to like, it's gonna take.
It's gonna take so so much for him to say
no to those schools. It is going to be so difficult.
I think maybe we've been in situations in our own
lives where it's just you have all the information, and
the information says go, but there's something in your gut
(33:26):
that tells you to stay. That's the only thing that
I think would keep link Kiffen in Oxford.
Speaker 4 (33:31):
Listen, he's making, according to the Internet, about nine million
dollars a year.
Speaker 5 (33:35):
I'm like, You're fine.
Speaker 4 (33:36):
You're fine because the pressure goes insanely up if you
go to LSU.
Speaker 5 (33:41):
You know, like, how long is your leash gonna be there?
Speaker 4 (33:43):
Yes, you're probably gonna make more money, but I don't
know how much patience are gonna have with you if.
Speaker 5 (33:48):
You take on that position. How long did Brian Kelly
last three and a half years? Sure, Like, I just
feel like here, this is peace of mind? Is you
staying at all?
Speaker 4 (33:58):
Miss?
Speaker 6 (33:59):
Here's my question though. Let's just say they take a dip,
they don't get a great transfer like they did at
quarterback this year, and now all of a sudden, Ole
misses eight and four, seven and five because guess what,
the nil game is now completely out of control and
you're still trying to compete with Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma
in addition to Florida and LSU and other schools, and
(34:21):
now you know, like the and now you're seven and
five after a couple of seven and five seasons, who
says that Ole Miss isn't Almost is not gonna say,
guess what, thanks for staying with us. Almost is going
to say, you know what, we kind of need a
new direction here that the Lang Kiffin era is run
its course, and that's what coaches have to deal with
on every level.
Speaker 4 (34:38):
Sure, sure, but that could be in any situation, right
I just if you're thinking like that, if you're thinking like,
what if everything starts to go bad here and I've
missed an opportunity?
Speaker 5 (34:48):
But what if everything starts to stay the same.
Speaker 4 (34:50):
And you bring this program to the top, and then
you could be the next man of college football?
Speaker 5 (34:57):
Because it's like, I don't think are you trying to
get to the NFL? I don't think so. You been there,
dumb holes. But he could probably get a job right
now in the NFL. Sure, if he wanted to could be.
So it's just I just it would have to be.
Speaker 4 (35:08):
You would have to put so much in front of
me for me, and it's to give the advice to
Lae Kiffen to.
Speaker 5 (35:14):
Leave ole Miss.
Speaker 4 (35:16):
Not that he's calling for my advice, but you would
have to put so much in front of me for
me to change my mind.
Speaker 6 (35:21):
Can I ask Bo Benson, our executive producer, a question,
do you think it is more likely than not that
Ole Miss has another ten and one start to their
season in the next three years?
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (35:33):
Much less likely?
Speaker 6 (35:34):
Yeah, ten and one.
Speaker 8 (35:35):
The thing with Kiffin is that he is a proven
commodity in the SEC, which I think buys him more
time if he were to go to Florida or LSU,
because he doesn't he's not following up Urban Meyer at Florida,
and he's not following up like Les Miles or Nick
Saban at LSU. Like he gets to come in and
be the savior, and the fans are going to be
more willing I think to give him time because he's
(35:56):
done it in the SEC already, whereas a guy at
Florida's name I already forgot Billiy Napier. Yeah, billiy Napier.
He came from a smaller school, so he didn't get
that leeway, and nobody like Brian Kelly from the moment
he stepped foot on campus at LSU.
Speaker 6 (36:09):
Listen, Dan Mullen coached at Florida as an assistant to
Urban Meyer. Now, I was at Mississippi State and had
a good run at Mississippi State and then left for Florida. Now,
Dan Mullen, after I stopping TV's at UNLV right now,
it's just now. And now, by the way, with the
emergence of Texas A and m under Mike Elcho Aside
(36:30):
from having to deal with Georgia in Alabama every single week,
if you stay at ole Miss, you're gonna have to
deal with LSU and now Texas A and M in
Oklahoma in those schools. So just the likelihood that Ole
Miss could keep this sort of level with all those
other schools at that level is it's just not likely
going to happen. So we shall see. I am right
(36:53):
there with you, Monci. Though the grass isn't always greener,
it's just a matter of if his gut's gonna tell
him to stay or not, because the cash will be
greener anyway. That's the life that lane Kiffin leads, and
apparently there's no ultimatum. They have a bye week this week.
Then they've got their egg Bowl coming up on next Friday,
a week from Friday against Mississippi State, and that will
(37:15):
end the regular season. There is also the conversation if
Lane Kiffin. This is a whole nother wrinkle into this.
If Lane Kiffin were to take a job at the
end of the regular season, would that affect ole Miss's
status in the College Football Playoff and whether they would
be included in the field or if their seating would
drop if they didn't have their head coach. Now, that
(37:37):
could be the wrinkle that is everybody up in arms
on if you're leaving for another job and costing your
team a chance in that playoff. I don't know if
LSU and Florida are going to be willing to wait
through a college football playoff to get their guy. It's
a long month. Yeah, it's a long month, but they
may have to if they want it to be Lin Kidny.
Speaker 5 (37:56):
Yeah, yes, done, done, done done.
Speaker 6 (38:00):
It's like the WWE. And speaking of the WWE, one
NFL player is in well, let's just say in the mix,
but should he be with the World Wrestling Entertainment. She's Monty,
I'm Dan in for Cavino and Rich Here on Fox.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
It's Cavino and Rich, but the guys aren't here.
Speaker 4 (38:16):
It's me, Monty Bilanios and Dan Bayer and the guys
we are in for the Dan Patrick Show. But thanks
for hanging out with us as we dive into Dan,
What are you allowed to do when you are sick?
Speaker 6 (38:29):
Yeah, this is a great, great question, is a questioned.
I feel guilty when I miss work right and I
have to go to the store to maybe get my stuff,
like maybe my wife can't pick up the stuff.
Speaker 5 (38:42):
Sure you need some soup, you need some day quill,
you need something, right?
Speaker 6 (38:45):
Yeah? Yes, And even though where I live is really
near no one here at Fox Sports Radio always feel
I'm going to bump into someone or the boss is
going to be an Aisle nine when I'm looking at
this stuff and it's like, oh, you're not at work, right,
You're I thought you were sick. I have this guilt
complex to be at home if I am missing that.
(39:05):
I don't want to be anywhere that I shouldn't be
if I am out of work or out of commission.
Speaker 5 (39:10):
And I think that's understandable.
Speaker 4 (39:12):
You should be able to go to the store though,
and get yourself some food and get yourself whatever it
is that you need, especially if what you have is
like a like a head cold, then you're not you know,
like a fever.
Speaker 5 (39:20):
I'm not moving.
Speaker 4 (39:21):
But if I have like a cold, I hear you,
I'm going to go get myself something to eat, something
to make sure i'm you know, be myself up.
Speaker 6 (39:28):
Yes, stuff to try to make yourself feel better. And
I think that's a good enough excuse. And Cam Scaboo says, yeah,
I was at a WWE event basically to try to
make myself feel better. That was his reasoning when he
got criticized for appearing at a WWE event on Monday
night where he had a brew haha with some wrestlers
that were obviously in the script and some other Giants
(39:49):
players were there as well. But Scataboo took to X
yesterday to say this in defense of his actions at
the wrestling event. Quote, Honestly, if if you don't like
that I'm having a good time while dealing with a
tough time, then just go ahead and unfollowing casually move on.
I'm not able to play football and have the fun
I've been having my whole life, so I am doing
(40:10):
things outside the box, trying to find stuff to keep
me happy. Enjoy the rest of y'all's week, and just
don't talk about me. If he ain't got nothing nice to.
Speaker 4 (40:19):
Say, Listen, Cam, I get what you are saying, but
your your career, your livelihood depends on you staying healthy
and not from a cold or a fever, but in
your body. So I have no problem with you being
at this WWE event, but can you be sitting up
in a suite where you're not part of the show
because one wrong step and then you know what if
(40:42):
you got what if you further injured yourself.
Speaker 5 (40:44):
By being in that position? You could be there. But
don't hear it, be involved in it.
Speaker 6 (40:49):
I hear you. But when is Cam Skataboo in his
entire life? Because I that was my initial thought, Manzi,
when is Cam Scataboo gonna get to be New York
Giants running back Cam Scataboo for his life? It's maybe
what four years maximum? And this coming off of an
(41:12):
injury where his foot was on backwards. Yep, okay, so
there's there's zero guarantee that Cam's Scataboo is going to
come back one hundred percent and be the same running back.
We hope that he is sure right I was, I
was right there with you, my gos. They're pushing him like,
couldn't even the wrestlers like realize that the guy had
surgery to repair his injury, that he's trying to rehab
(41:33):
from that. I'm actually for it, and I stand by
him because that window is so small and it's right
now and he's not even playing and he's still a
hot ticket, so you gotta cash in while the iron
is hot. So I was. I was about to to
take him and rake him over the colds, but I
can't do it.
Speaker 4 (41:52):
You could have put him in the exact same video,
imagine this exact same video where he gets up. Why
can't he Why couldn't he have just state sitting down
and with his crutch poked at them and entered and
not stood up like you can be a part of it.
I yes, I agree, she's like different ways if you're crutch.
Speaker 6 (42:08):
These script writers should have been better. We'll even have
to ask Papa Bear as well. They could have written
a better script, right, I mean, come on, like cheeze,
but he should be there have a good time like
we are.
