Today.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
We also had Gary v stop by our bonus pot,
so look out for that. Over promised with Covino and
Rich on Fox Sports Radios YouTube page.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
You brought up a great point every time we talk
to Gary Vee, Gary Vee, Nur Chuck hates me, Gary Vee,
I'm gonna f him by the jets. Every time I
talk to him, I leave the conversation feeling so happy
and good about our show. And Givio said, we have
known him for a long time and he's a good friend.
But he goes That's what makes Gary v him.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
He's he's a mastermind in those situations. He knows that
part of his sales approach and just being a good
guy and public speaker is to leave people feeling like, Wow,
he's the best.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
He leaves you feeling he leaves you feeling good.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
It's it's definitely a tactic, but he's genuine at the
same time.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
That's what makes him different. Now, we got to talk
lebronk in.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Just a few minutes, but let me give you the
gist of what's going on here. Lebron James playing like
he's twenty something years old again. So hope you had
a Lebron James sorre tonight. Hope you're having a Canelo
Alvarez sort of week. He just signed a real fat
four fight deal and Jake Paul is not included, so
that rumors squashed. As wait, Jake Paul rumor squashed as

(03:07):
of now, maybe after this four fight deal, but he's
getting paid. So again, a really big twenty four hours
for Canelo and Lebron James. He scored forty two points
last night, seventeen rebounds, eight assists, but his body language
was like.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Seventeen rebounds, Yeah, that is insane.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
He just seemed like rejuvenated. So it just all leads
up to this Luca weekend. But now they're saying that's
gonna happen on Monday today against the Jazz. But you know,
maybe that got them all fired up.

Speaker 5 (03:38):
I mean, he had already kind of been in his
own because that's the lakers tenth to win in twelve games.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Yeah, two points at his age.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
Right, even before all this went down, they were playing
really well together as a team. And last night's win
over the Warriors that was without their new center Williams,
who hasn't suited up for them yet and without Luca.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
And Curry had thirty seven points, but the Lakers still
beat him. Now, in that game, Lebron hit a half
court shot. But that's not the half court shot we're
gonna talk about later on. There's a real controversial half
court shot in the news now we're gonna get to
Drew Brees in a second, but just want to remind
everyone if you don't know, John Baptiste is gonna be
doing the national anthem at the Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
We all know Kendrick Lamar at halftime.

Speaker 3 (04:18):
But something to look out for while you're setting up
the dips and appetizers on Sunday.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Did you see that.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt are doing a pregame event
with Fox?

Speaker 2 (04:30):
Like they're part of the pregame. Tom Cruise the inventor
of the hover Round. No, not the other Tom Cruise.
Oh oh, the actual actors and Brad Pitt. So I
don't know what they're gonna do, but they do.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
They just announced that they're gonna be part of it,
so look forward to that. But right now, we caught up.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
With them earlier.

Speaker 1 (04:45):
Honestly, a guy that's so fun to talk to.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
I think you're gonna enjoy this from Media, Row Cavin
on Rich Fox Sports Radio with Drew Brees.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Take a listen.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Hey is Covino and Rich on Fox Sports Radio, and
we're joined by NFL legend and Super Bowl champion bree
and Drew.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
You're here with Bowney you put a big plate of
wings in front of me, and you expect me to
focus on this interview.

Speaker 2 (05:09):
No, I want you to shout out on these wings.

Speaker 6 (05:11):
And then when you get messy and you're like, man,
what do I do to clean this up?

Speaker 2 (05:15):
I got your bounty fixed right here.

Speaker 6 (05:18):
Because you can't have football without wings, can't have wings
without bounding.

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Well, let me start before we took football, and also
all the fun stuff.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Blue cheese a ranch. This is like the debate that
never goes away.

Speaker 6 (05:29):
So I think if you were asking, like an og
buffalo wing dude, which Rob Gronkowski Gronk and he's.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
The bounty man, and he asked me to be his
wing man in this is I think he would say
blue cheese. I'm a blue cheese guy myself.

Speaker 6 (05:43):
I feel you, yeah, but I'm dairy free, so I
stay away from you.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Stay by the way.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
When you say Gronky, I mean you had some great
tight ends Jimmy Grammon his Prime and Earth. But I
mean would have been fun to play with Gronk.

Speaker 6 (05:56):
Gronk's a monster. I don't think you realize how big
that dude is.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
Yeah, he's hilarious too, He's he's every.

Speaker 6 (06:02):
Yeah, yeah, Like like I I get it. You know,
he's he's like his person.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Here's the thing. He's so much fun to be around.

Speaker 6 (06:12):
Like like you know those dudes that just they're just
having more fun than everybody else.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
That's wrong, right, Like just like can we inject that?
Like does that injectable?

Speaker 1 (06:20):
You know people are so subdued and he's the complete option. No, no, yeah,
that's how I feel like social media, Like why is
everybody living such a great life?

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Everyone's having so much fun? That's Gronk, right, Why is
he having so much fun? What is it? That is?

Speaker 6 (06:31):
Although he was asked today because we were doing a
bunch of stuff together. They were like, you know, where,
when's the Gronk beach bash that happens in every Super Bowl.
He's like, you know, I've I've.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Grown that, I've outgrown that.

Speaker 6 (06:43):
I've turned the page to a newer, a newer Gronk mature.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
He only crushes three beats.

Speaker 6 (06:52):
But then he goes, no, we've actually moved to April
twentieth at Wrestle.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
That's done, is just postponed.

Speaker 3 (07:01):
Hey, Drew Brees hagging with Coavin on Rich. I think
super Bowls I happen to be at the one that
you won. And I remember it was the first Super
Bowl I attended. And you know, you with your son
and the headphones. Is it a lasting image? And now
I think back, I had to look at it before
you got here. Your sounds are like a grown man.
He's sixteen years old. Man, he's a grown boy, dude

(07:22):
trying to get his driver's license? Is that wild to you?
Looking back? Like that might be the coolest father son picture.
I got to figure out how to do that with
my kid one day. Yeah, I can't replicate that, you know,
it was It's crazy because obviously he's a kid.

Speaker 6 (07:35):
You know, I was a sports junkie, you know, I
wanted to be a professional athlete, actually want to be
a professional baseball player.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Football wasn't really on the radar, but.

Speaker 6 (07:44):
Once I was kind of on this football path and
I just envisioned, like, you know, what's the what's the
ultimate goal here? What's the ultimate prize? Win the Super Bowl?
And yeah, the Lombardi Trophy. But like, honestly, I just
had this image in my mind of if I ever
get a chance to be up there, like I hope
that I have a son that I'm able to share
that moment with you envision sure enough, all of a sudden,
it's like a manifestation of just you know, here it is,

(08:07):
you know, and so honestly, it was like time stood still.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
It was just it was the most amazing moment.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Two questions as he grows up and by the way,
such an awesome moment, but he's sixteen. Do you get
in the car with him? He must have his permit?
Are you frightened by this? And do you get him
his first car?

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Yeah? Look, he's.

Speaker 6 (08:26):
I think every sixteen year old boy definitely had like
the connections.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Quite and aren't quite all there, you know what I'm.

Speaker 6 (08:33):
Saying, Like it's still you know, like they still do
and say stuff where you're like.

Speaker 2 (08:37):
What does he have the broccoli head haircut? Oh? For sure.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
Yeah, he's the kind of kid I'm keeping my fifteen
year old daughter away from away from the rock gol.

Speaker 6 (08:45):
There's no question. I got a ten year old daughter
and I'm just but yeah, you know, he's he's actually
been pretty good, like not too bad.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
You know.

Speaker 6 (08:56):
We learn how to park, you know, in between cars
and actually drive next to cars and have awareness with
changing lanes.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
So scary man, dude, it is. Yeah, it's really scary.

Speaker 6 (09:06):
I'm not I'm not really excited about the whole driving thing,
other than the fact that, like, finally it's you don't
have to drive them everywhere.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
You know you are, right, Hey, I want to go here? Great,
drive yourself there. Yeah, because you're his child, right because right? Yeah,
exactly right.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
I feel like this guy every day I'm like, where
are you? Like I'm driving my daughter and it's always
just somewhere like not.

Speaker 2 (09:23):
Close and their friends and everything else. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Now you're talking about Gronk before and his personality type.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
You were a great leader man.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Tell us about that when you deal with all these
different age groups and personalities.

Speaker 2 (09:35):
What was your approach to leadership?

Speaker 6 (09:38):
Well, it was It was interesting later in my career
because you know, here, I am call it thirty seven
to forty two years old, right, and just about everybody
walking in the locker room is twenty two, twenty three,
twenty four years old, right, So a huge generational gap.
Like there were moments where I'm in the weight room,
like a song comes on the radio you or something.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
I'm like, ah, dude, this was my jam.

Speaker 6 (09:57):
Like eighth grade, middle school, you vision like a middle
school dance.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Or something, you know, and you're like, oh, this is
my and like.

Speaker 6 (10:03):
You see one of the young bucks and you're like, hey, man,
you remember this ang that like that was important exactly.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
You know.

Speaker 6 (10:12):
Now my kids call me an unk, like when I
say stuff like that, like, Dad, you're such an unk.
So anyway, but like at the end of the day,
like showing these guys that you care about them and
showing these guys man, like I want to help you
be successful.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
Like every at the start of every off.

Speaker 6 (10:29):
Season, I would ask these young guys, I want you
to write down three goals for me, Like I want
a professional goal, I want a personal goal, I want
a family goal, and I want to go through those
things together and I want you to know that I'm
there to help support you.

Speaker 2 (10:39):
Would actually do that absolutely.

Speaker 6 (10:41):
I would write them down for myself and then I
would I was kind of a vulnerable Hey guys, this
is what I'm trying to accomplish. Man, you'll hold me
accountable and then make sure it to me and like, okay,
I'm going to hold you accountable. But the end of
the day, like look, every every guy who comes in
the league has these visions of Man, I'm getting to
this this big, this second contract, Like I've got these
personal goals I'm trying to achieve and I always one
of those guys to know, Man, I'm right there with you,

(11:02):
Like take your role, accept your role. It may not
be the role that you want right now, this is
where you want to be. Here's what you have to
do to get there, and I'm gonna help you get
there every step of the way.

Speaker 2 (11:11):
Leadership right there.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
Yeah, and he did it for twenty years, so he
had to have a knack of leading all different types
of men. And who do you see that leadership in today?
Like who do you admire? Like that guy? He does
it right.

Speaker 6 (11:23):
You know, it's hard not to admire these young qbs
right that are coming up right now. In fact, it's
it's I feel like it's fairly unprecedented. Where literally, like
let's kind of start with Mahomes' class heartedly he's like
the elder statesman a year, you know, seven as a starter. Yeah,
but like you just kind of go down the list

(11:43):
of guys like Lamar and Josh right, and then kind
of that Burrow class, right, and then these six dudes
who came out last year, right, and they're Kye Daniels
had and bon Nicks and like now Caleb Williams is
getting you know, Ben Johnson, right, and so like you
look at this these these guys and just going, man like,
the future is so bright for the NFL with all
these young qbs. But like there's some about Jayden Daniels.

(12:06):
Obviously sawmon Ls. You actually spend a little time with
them at LSU right when he transferred there. Was really
impressed with like his poison composure and just felt like
there was like a focus and intentionality and he kind
of man from.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
His junior year to his senior year. Man, Like, there
was just this flip.

Speaker 6 (12:21):
And as I watched him this year, I watch if
you want to know about a guy, just watch the
way guys react towards him. You know, like watch the
way the O line reacts when the dude gets knocked down,
you know, and if they're running over like oh, like okay,
they love his guy, like after the game a touchdown
pass or something.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Man, everybody.

Speaker 6 (12:38):
So like, I see these guys and you know, whatever
their style is, just make sure it's authentic. I don't
think there's a lot of raw rod guys but like, man,
sometimes you're fiery. A lot of times you're poison composed
at the end of the day. Like, the more that
you care about your guys, man, the more that they're
gonna want to take care of you.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Drew Brees hanging with Covino on Rich I just picture.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
The last game you played in when you looked back
at on the field, you took that pause by the tunnel,
turned around and looked. Was that was that one of
the more emotional moments of your life that didn't involve
maybe your kids or wife.

Speaker 6 (13:06):
Yeah, I mean, look, it was obviously it was It
was tough because you know, it's it's COVID and so
there's no fans in the in the stands, you know, right,
So didn't really feel like got that a great feeling
of closure, you know. And obviously you just lost a
playoff game, and you know, you you hope that you
would have kept going further. But yeah, it was just
I kind of I kind of knew that, you know,

(13:28):
that was that was probably it, and and so just
that one last glimpse that that would have been home
for so long.

Speaker 3 (13:33):
You ever get that after you retired, did you ever
get the itch like I know I could still do it,
like like when you would see like Tom doing it
as forty He's like, I could.

Speaker 6 (13:40):
Probably, I'll be honest with you, if if if my
right shoulder wasn't you know, I had that really bad
injury in with with the Chargers, and I knew I
was on a fast track at that point to like
early on set arthritis and just a bunch of wear
and tear, right, I mean, And the doctor told me that,
and he's like, man, you just kind of hang on
as long as you can. I used to call it
pro along my prime, I'm just gonna prolong, prolong and prolonged.

(14:02):
But man, the last couple of years, I could just
feel like, man, it was just a struggle just to
kind of throw throughout the week to get to game day, right,
and you function right, You find ways to survive, and like, man,
I couldn't throw it much past like forty five yards, right,
but I'll freaking rip you up inside of thirty.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
That's gonna say football. But that's what I'm saying is.

Speaker 6 (14:19):
Like your your mental, your your knowledge, experience, wisdom is
at an all time high, but the physical skills start tominish.

Speaker 2 (14:24):
Like if I could throw the ball.

Speaker 6 (14:25):
Like my body, I could play, I could play right now,
I could process again, still see the game right, but
just the right shoulder doesn't. Now maybe he's a lefty
like if the if the field it maybe flag football
Olympic LA twenty twenty eighth.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
There you go, tangaries nice. I'm gonna give it a go, right.

Speaker 1 (14:42):
I know you got to run bounty any anything. You
gotta let us know about what's doing here.

Speaker 6 (14:46):
Yeah, you know football wings, wings, bounty, like everybody's getting
together on Super Bowl Sunday, like whipping up the chili
and the dogs and the you know, cheese dip and
you know the blue cheese.

Speaker 7 (14:57):
What do you need?

Speaker 4 (14:58):
You know?

Speaker 1 (14:58):
And what do you need to My mom always yelled
at me for using too much of the paper towels.

Speaker 2 (15:03):
Can I waste them? Can I use as many as
I want?

Speaker 6 (15:06):
Or yeah, you can use I mean, like, don't intentionally
make a mess. But like when you do, you know,
we just we just soak it up with money, highly
absorb it.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
He's a super Bowl champion here.

Speaker 1 (15:15):
On Super Bowl Week, NFL Legend Drew Brees on the.

Speaker 2 (15:20):
Absolutely that it was a pleasure.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
I mean, could it be a nicer guy daddy than
Drew Brees.

Speaker 5 (15:27):
I don't know why so many people hated him when
he started, you know, being a broadcaster.

Speaker 1 (15:32):
Well, now that he gave me all those free Bounty
paper towels, I love the guy.

Speaker 4 (15:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
But great guests, super nice dude, Drew Brees, And if
you missed it earlier, Seal the Artist, Seal and Deebo
Samuel on the show.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
And we still got Donovan mcnap. Stop. You know it's funny.

Speaker 3 (15:47):
You're so right though you mom wasn't the only one.
My mom too.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
You're wasting the paper towels like they were golden my house.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
Yes, seriously, I guess they were expensive in the eighties.
I don't know what it was still expense, I know.

Speaker 5 (16:00):
But dude, you know our fourteen year old Once in
a while at dinner, I'll see her rip like three
of them off and just like leave him on the table.

Speaker 2 (16:08):
And I used one of them.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
I use like, yeah, because I still got my mom
yelling at me in my mind.

Speaker 2 (16:13):
But are you gonna try to put a few roles
in your carry on? Absolutely?

Speaker 8 (16:16):
Man.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
I actually went up to Drew afterward. I'm like, yo, man,
you got the hook up or what. So he stuck
me a few. So thanks again to Drew Brees. Just
a really nice dude and he looks great by the way.
He does look like he could still play. But we
got to talk Lebron James and his college kid. I
was talking about next perfect some college kid hit a
half court shot and a contest and a promotion.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
And it got a little controversial. We'll explain. Can't wait,
cam you know?

He was great.

Speaker 1 (18:05):
We still got Donovan McNabb on Standby Eagles Legend, but
real quick, right quick, I told you. Lebron went off
right forty two points, seventeen rebounds, eight assists to beat
the Golden State Warriors, and Curry had a good game,
but one of the most memorable moments. Was this half
court shot yet? But there's another half court shot in
the news. The story annoys me. Yeah, some college kid

(18:27):
was out of UMass women's basketball game.

Speaker 2 (18:28):
Again.

Speaker 1 (18:29):
I'm going by my boy Jack Mac from barstool, right,
he told.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
This story and I was like, no way.

Speaker 1 (18:34):
So this college kid was doing this halftime little promotion, right,
and the deal was you make a layup.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
Sweet, I've seen this.

Speaker 1 (18:41):
Yeah, Leed, you got to make the free free throw,
then you got to make the three point.

Speaker 2 (18:44):
Then he goes to make the half court shot for.

Speaker 1 (18:47):
Ten thousand dollars, right, ten thousand dollars shot. He heaves
it up, switch, nothing but the bottom exactly, money ten
thousand dollars until hold up.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Wait a minute, record scratch exactly.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
He gets a letter from the school's lawyers, the promotion company,
I think it's called Odds On Promotions that handles these
sort of things throughout the nation, and they say, hey,
we're not going to give you the ten thousand dollars
you have thought you won because your foot was on
the line and it says here in the rules, and
it's like, well, what officials are studying this tape because

(19:25):
you really can't even tell you. Just see this kid
heave it off. It's so close, right, He's not the game.

Speaker 2 (19:31):
This is I get it.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
Like someone would say, well, rules or rules, but the
optics of this ten thousand dollars to a university to
a program is peanuts. So now college studently isn't paying
this kid named Noah who hit this shot, and apparently
they feel bad about it, so they offered him a
four person like low suite, one hundred dollars in gift certificate,

(19:56):
one hundred dollars side seats for the next like win.
That's dark was the lead for tickets to a women's
college basketball game.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Yeah, seriously sweet. Yeah, and if you look at the footage.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
No one was really at the game man at courtside seats,
and they said, hey, you know what, we feel bad
by the way it implies guilt to me, Like, you know,
why would you give him any anclery prize or consolation
prize if he didn't get it? Because they said, look,
we'll let you do it again, but next time for
one thousand dollars. So odds On Promotions made a public

(20:30):
statement saying, hey, look we stand by our rules and
this and that We've paid over forty million dollars in
contest throughout the nation.

Speaker 2 (20:37):
So what's another ten thousand dollars? Is the question? Give
this kid the ten grand?

Speaker 3 (20:42):
Pay them, pay them, pay them. Pay ten grands is
a lot to a college hit, It's a lot to
a lot of people. But this has bunked this story.

Speaker 1 (20:50):
Yeah, so the internet's going wild about it, saying, you know,
pay this kid.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
And not only should they pay this kid Cavino like
the consolation prize a week, don't it reminds me of
remember the Hornets gave a kid a PS five and
they're like, oh.

Speaker 2 (21:02):
That was just for show and they took it away.
Make it right, all right?

Speaker 3 (21:06):
Now, listen the fun continues here Radio Row Speaking of college,
a guy that I went to college with, Donovan McNab,
Eagles legend, QS Legends.

Speaker 2 (21:16):
We caught up with them. Check it out live from
New Orleans. Coveno and Rich.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
It's Coveno and Rich on Fox Sports Radio and we're
here with NFL legend, Philadelphia Eagles legend Donovan McNabb.

Speaker 8 (21:30):
Yeah, wait, crowd's going crazy right now.

Speaker 3 (21:35):
You would say Eagle yeah, Syracuse baby, my freshman year.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
Yeah, the crowd's going crazy.

Speaker 1 (21:42):
I'll tell you, you know what I've been saying for years,
just to get at him, I said, didn't Donovan Nab
used to make you do your laundry, used to clean.

Speaker 2 (21:50):
His socks for right. I used to do his hundred.

Speaker 7 (21:53):
No.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
My freshman year at Syracuse, I had the privilege of
watching you play.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
In the dome. And man, that's a long ass time ago. Now,
yeah it is.

Speaker 8 (22:02):
But you know what, it's funny because now I've got
a kid at Syracuse. Wow, and she's a junior. She
plays basketball. Uh, and to go back is kind of
like you know, always, man, there used to be so
and so over here, and she's like, Dad, that was
back in the nineties, Like there was.

Speaker 1 (22:18):
Cosmos and then there was Lucy's and Maggie's and all
the buttons.

Speaker 2 (22:22):
Like Cropolis is gone. Cropolis had a great slice.

Speaker 3 (22:26):
Yes, the crust had like almost like a like a texture.

Speaker 8 (22:30):
Well, I don't know kind of it's probably was sitting
for about eight hours, but then they put it in
up and Chuck. It was absolutely sucks. Hold on, can
we go back in time. You're here talking Syracuse. What
was that like for you?

Speaker 1 (22:44):
You went to Chucks you went to all these places,
did you ever pay for a slice of pizza?

Speaker 2 (22:47):
You were Dene?

Speaker 8 (22:48):
Absolutely, really, you ain't walking out with a slice and
some wings free? Really over the Cropolis or Varsita.

Speaker 1 (22:56):
Absolutely tell us what it was like to be you
that campus though.

Speaker 8 (23:01):
Thursday nights because we played Saturday, Thursday nights, Monday nights
were great nights. Saturday night was an outstanding nights during
football season, right, you know because obviously you're celebrating to
win and everyone's enjoying themselves. The fun was always there,

(23:22):
even when it snowed. And that's the thing is when
you're playing on the East Coast and the snow, like
nothing shuts down in Syracuse. No nothing. It could be
eighty thousand feet of snow. The busses are still going
and the bars are still open. Great time.

Speaker 1 (23:40):
Able to look back and because enough time has passed
and said, man.

Speaker 2 (23:43):
I was the man dude. No, I was never like that. No, no, I.

Speaker 8 (23:48):
Was never like that. I was all about team and
me and my teammates went out had a good time
when it came to football or basketball because I played
basketball too. It was just an opportunity to have fun. Man,
You know what I mean it's like all the football
teams here, like it wasn't like, yeah, I'm here, Like, no,
I'm not that type of guy.

Speaker 2 (24:06):
I love that, man, I love that. How do you
stay humble like that?

Speaker 8 (24:09):
It's upbringing. It's upbringing. Mom and dad just we weren't
about that, you know. We're all about focusing and zoning
in on the common goal. And you know, obviously I
was a little rebellious, you know, as most kids are.
When you get to college you're away from family. I mean,
I'm from Chicago, so that's a long ways away. I
looked at it as a long time for my dad

(24:30):
to get here if something happened, so I can be
able to get myself together if something went wrong.

Speaker 1 (24:36):
Now, when you were playing at Syracuse, when you were
playing period, you were in control of the situation. For
the most part, You're leading the team. What's it like
when you're watching your daughter play?

Speaker 2 (24:44):
Now?

Speaker 1 (24:44):
Are you just going nuts inside? How does that feel? No,
it's more joy, really, it's more joy. You're able to
sit back and relax.

Speaker 8 (24:53):
Not really, but you know, because I'm I still have
a coach's mentality, and so I'm usually yelling from the
stands I'm that dad.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
Can you give me the balance?

Speaker 3 (25:04):
Because when I get back to Los Angeles tomorrow, I
start coaching t ball and I'm doing my daughter's softball
team too.

Speaker 2 (25:12):
What's the balance? She's seven. I've done it two years
ago row, but now they're coach each other.

Speaker 8 (25:17):
I coach softball for seven years. I coached softball for
five years. It's hard to club.

Speaker 1 (25:21):
It's hard to be sterned with the little girls though,
right club club, that's.

Speaker 8 (25:25):
Next time I've got. I've had middle school girls and
the high school girls. I've just recently stepped down from coaching.
I started an organization myself. The tough part is when
you're coaching, you know, you're trying to develop, and you're
trying to provide confidence for these kids, and you're giving

(25:46):
them great work ethic and passion and trying to bring
the best out of them because the most important thing
is you want them to have fun, no doubt, you
want them to have fun while they're learning, and not
to look at it as if it's a job. Sort
to speak. And so when they get older and they
start developing and they start to see the results, now
it becomes okay, I really like doing this and so

(26:09):
for a coach, that's what you want to see. But
it's just when you have these older girls, if the
parents start becoming the problem because it because she wants
to know what she can do the playmore and you know,
she didn't really pitch as much this tournament and it's
like she gave up seven runs.

Speaker 3 (26:27):
By the way, imagine having to question Donovan McNabb. I know,
like he knows a little something.

Speaker 9 (26:32):
But.

Speaker 8 (26:34):
You know what I mean, it's it could be that
that they're just like, oh, well, you know, you're you're
you know, because people start hating you know, it's like
you're a coach. He's a football coach. What does he
know about softball? It's like I played baseball too, Like yeah,
and by the way, and we're kicking your butta.

Speaker 1 (26:49):
The pressure the moms are putting on the dads to
say something.

Speaker 2 (26:52):
Say something. It's like he's like, that's Donovan McNabb, No, coach,
talk to you. No, that's cool, it's cool and we're good.

Speaker 8 (27:05):
Now.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
You did that for seven years. So obviously really fulfilling,
right and coach basketball, coach.

Speaker 1 (27:10):
Basketball, post football, what has been the most fulfilling thing
for you?

Speaker 8 (27:14):
Watch my kids grow, really watch my kids grow. And
when I when I went into retirement, you know, I
told my wife, I was like, I'm gonna be the
dude at the diner, going to the same diner every day.
I know, I know the chef, I know the waitresses.
I'm gonna be the guy going to the gym every morning.

Speaker 2 (27:34):
You know.

Speaker 8 (27:34):
I had a regiment and it was like, and I'm
gonna be the dad at every game, like check my
kids to practice, you know, pick them up from practice,
be in every game, because that's that's the thing is
you want to be supportive of your kids because you
don't want your kids and looking not see you in
the stands. And then it's like my dad never really
came to my games. I made sure that that was
never gonna be said.

Speaker 2 (27:54):
Amazing now twenty years ago, not to date us.

Speaker 3 (27:57):
That was the first Super Bowl we went to as
a show five Jacksonville, Florida.

Speaker 8 (28:02):
Damn you were this Closs Bros. Twenty years in close, Bro,
I mean to say it twenty years ago. Wow, Yeah,
I mean, but you know what what it's kind of
it's one that you could talk about and just understand
the journey, but you have to understand the journey. You

(28:23):
got to understand the four NFC championships. You gotta understand,
you know, the ups and downs and the seasons. You
gotta understand kind of our process and to be able
to make it to the Super Bowl. Yes, we were
that close to winning and and you know, it hurts
sometimes when you think about it, but it still shapes
our lives, no doubt, Like would I go back and

(28:44):
change it? I would love to go back in and
change and we win. But it really made me who
I am today when it comes to me working with
my kids and being able to explain, hey, we're high
sometimes and then we have lows, but not everything is
going to be perfect. But you have to be able
to get back on track, lace up the shoes, and

(29:04):
get moving forward because not everything is going to go
the right way, you know, the way you expected. What
was that thing like? That burned? Like when you lost
the Super Bowl? You did a lot of great things
that season in your whole career. And the reason I
asked that is because all the Eagles lost one. Jalen
Hurts lost one, so he's got to have a certain
fire inside. Now what the thing was? You know, when

(29:25):
you do lose the game. In your mind, you're always
thinking we'll be back, and that's kind of something that, Okay,
next season, then the following season doesn't happen. The following
season doesn't happen, and for them at least, we're Jalen
right now, you're back and you're trying to do everything

(29:45):
to correct from what happened in that first game so
that they won't happen in this particular game.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
Is it wild for you to see coach Reid still
doing this thing?

Speaker 8 (29:53):
Yes, it's it's it's you know, I talked to I
talked to Big Red all the time, and I'm just like, listen, man,
like you have had the privilege of having a guy
at the face of the franchise carry you for over
a decade and be able to collect win after win
after win. And he's like, yeah, I've coached two Hall

(30:15):
of Fame quarterbacks. It's amazing. And I go, well, Alex
Smith had a great year, he had a great career.
He goes, now, you are my first Hall of Fame quarterback.
You were my first quarterback that I drafted. He had
never been a head coach, got the position all time,
winning his head coach in Eagles history and all time

(30:36):
winning his head coach in Kansas City.

Speaker 1 (30:38):
Hey, as a veteran now who's been there and done
all that, do you reach out to these young quarterbacks ever?

Speaker 2 (30:43):
I do you do?

Speaker 8 (30:43):
I do text message, I talk to Patrick, Talk to Patrick,
talk to Jaydeon Daniels. I've been talking to Jayane Daniels
since he was at Arizona State.

Speaker 3 (30:52):
I feel like a lot of people have been talking
about Jaden daniels maturity and how this kid gets it.

Speaker 8 (30:56):
But see, this is the thing about the NFL. You
want to get a guy who is mature and has
games under his belt. He's been a starter for four
years and that says a lot. Yeah, four year starter
and like these guys sometimes is like one year, two
year starter, you know, sat then all of a sudden
became the starter and then he blew up and it's

(31:18):
like he hasn't had that much game experience. He has
game experience, He's been there. He was actually light as
a freshman and sophomore he got bigger, but he still
played like he was big. And that's the thing that's key.
I wasn't shocked by the way he played this year
by any means.

Speaker 2 (31:37):
Are you torn at all.

Speaker 3 (31:39):
Being that coach reads like, you know, one of your
probably closest people in the football world. But then you
spent most of your career as an Eagle's just like
one of those like.

Speaker 8 (31:46):
Ah, it's a win win for me, it's a win
win for me. I want the Eagles to win. But
if Andy wins, to be a part of his journey,
it's special. It's special. I mean we're talking possible three
p We've never seen it happen, crazy, right, and to
have the big red guy as the face of it, right,

(32:08):
it's unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (32:09):
Well, don of it.

Speaker 3 (32:09):
I want to thank you for being part of my journey,
no joke, like, oh yeah, I started my radio world
at Z eighty nine.

Speaker 2 (32:14):
Oh hold hold it down. Yeah, And that's where.

Speaker 3 (32:17):
I started, and I was, you know, trying to figure
out do I want to do radio? While I'm going
to the Dome to watch you and fast forward twenty
plus years later.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
It's pretty cool to see.

Speaker 8 (32:25):
You here man, thirty years thirty right, yeah, damp nuts.

Speaker 1 (32:32):

Right now, it is time the football season, Coudo.

Speaker 3 (34:14):
Eighteen weeks of making our picks, predictions fantasy players. The
playoffs comes down to one game, sixty minutes Sunday, Super
Bowl fifty nine.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
How does it go down? Your final choice?

Speaker 8 (34:28):
You fired that?

Speaker 5 (34:29):
NFL films music in the background. All right, I'm fired up, Sammy.

Speaker 2 (34:33):
I think it continues to be.

Speaker 1 (34:37):
The year of the running back, and Saquon is the
difference In a close one. The Eagles break it up
with a win thirty four thirty one over the Chiefs. Oh,
Eagles played spoiler to Brady. I think they play a
spoiler to Chiefs. Three peting and a stop history. Look
all week long, We've talked to professional athletes all week long,

(35:00):
and everybody says, don't bet against Mahomes, don't bet against Mahomes.
But we kept asking, well, how do you stop Barkley?
Even the pros didn't have an answer to that, because
nobody has an answer to that. So until you tell me,
you know there's a way to stop this guy, I
don't know how you do it. I think he's the difference.

Speaker 2 (35:17):
All right, Well, listen, I have the same pick as you,
but let me explain.

Speaker 1 (35:22):
Okay, I got the Eagles thirty one twenty six, thirty
one twenty six Eagles. I'm still picking under on Saquon
Barkley under one hundred and ten and a half. I
think turnovers will be the difference. The ball always bounces
the way of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Speaker 2 (35:40):
That changes this Sunday.

Speaker 3 (35:41):
If Tom Brady couldn't do three in a row, Joe
Montana got close. Guess what happened in Montana's third try
a fumble against the Giants in nineteen ninety which led
them to the Super Bowl and that was the of
the Niners or fourteen and two. So if Joe Montana,
Joe Coole couldn't do it, Tom Brady couldn't do it, Yo,
pump the brakes. I love Mahomes Eagles thirty one, twenty six.

(36:02):
I'm looking for a big game from Jalen Hurts, hitting
A J. Brown, DeVante Smith, and our dude, Dallas Goddard.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
I think it's I think it's gonna be a good
home that surprises me. I thought you were going to
go Chiefs. All right.

Speaker 5 (36:12):
Here's Dan Byers. Before I get to mind, he left
his prediction with me. He's got Eagles beating the Chiefs
thirty three.

Speaker 2 (36:19):
He's got hold out to drop. That's an audio drop
from Sam scaring us on the side. Hold on, hold on,
hold on, hold up.

Speaker 5 (36:26):
Buyer has the Eagles thirty three the Chiefs twenty seven.
Great job, right, all right, great job.

Speaker 2 (36:33):
Why don't we use these more?

Speaker 5 (36:35):
I know this week we've heard a lot about the
Chiefs defense versus Saquan, but the key to this game
is going to be the Eagles defense keeping Mahomes on
the sideline just long enough to play keep away. At
the end of the game, in the final minute, the
refs help Casey get in position for a potential tying
field goal, but it bangs off the upright of the

(36:55):
Eagles hoist the Lombardi twenty seven to twenty four has.

Speaker 2 (37:00):
To get in the kitchen. Yeah, so far all Eagles, Yes,
all right, and now we go to spotty man four
of us.

Speaker 7 (37:07):
I'm not choosing the either team. I'm choosing the elkxis.

Speaker 2 (37:13):
What is that or whatever? No, I'm going with the
Birds on this one. I feel it.

Speaker 7 (37:17):
I don't know if I'm not just playing bandwagon. I
feel like I feel it in my heart of hearts.
And that's how I choose games, because it really comes
down to at this elite level at in the super Bowl,
it could be anyone's game, and I feel like it's
leaning towards the Eagles score wise. I'm feeling thirty five Eagles. Okay,
let's go with twenty seven Chiefs. All right, let's go

(37:39):
to Sherman Oaks, California. Manzy, what say you.

Speaker 1 (37:42):
Before before we go to Manzi Vegas has it Chiefs
minus one?

Speaker 2 (37:46):
So this is by far, this is a pickum. Essential
really is.

Speaker 3 (37:49):
And the fact that it's five oh right now Manzi
is clean sweep.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
Are you going Chiefs?

Speaker 8 (37:53):
No?

Speaker 4 (37:54):
No, no, you guys keep talking about what's gonna What are
they gonna do with Saquon Barkley.

Speaker 1 (37:58):
Steve Spagnolo is gonna know what do you guys keep
mentioning Patrick Mahomes alongside Tom Brady.

Speaker 2 (38:03):
He didn't do it. Spagnolo is going to figure it out.
I'm taking the Chiefs to win it. Twenty seven to
twenty four.

Speaker 5 (38:08):
Oh wow, and now let's go to Bersh back at
the studios.

Speaker 2 (38:12):
Thanks for earlier help this week, Buddy birl.

Speaker 9 (38:14):
Of course, of course, it's been a it's been a
great time. Now Here are my thoughts on what will happen.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
You can't give get to you get get Yeah, but
they can. The Chiefs are going to win this game.

Speaker 9 (38:30):
You can't just keep picking against the Chiefs because they
will continue to prove you wrong. They will keep getting
away with it, but they won't top thirty points because
they don't do that.

Speaker 2 (38:38):
Twenty nine to twenty four. Chiefs win this one. Three
all right?

Speaker 5 (38:42):
Instead of Iowa Sam, we've been calling him now for
a few weeks.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
Cheese Steak Sammy Steak Sam Sam. I think I think
we know which way you're leaning. Buddy.

Speaker 10 (38:52):
Well, I blurted this out on the Doug Golly Show.
I didn't really put any thought into this score, so
I took the Eagles to win thirty four to twenty.
I don't actually think it'll be that big of a
gap there, but I did. I did pick that the
Eagles to win thirty four to twenty on The Doug
Golly Show, So I gotta stick with it. Eagles thirty
four twenty Kansas City.

Speaker 5 (39:13):
And we appreciate all of the staff back home in
Sherman Oaks.

Speaker 2 (39:17):
Thank you guys for.

Speaker 1 (39:18):
Helping there all week and real surprising picks man. Only
two people chows the Chiefs.

Speaker 2 (39:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (39:26):
Oh, is Kendrick Lamar gonna say the pedophile Drake line?

Speaker 2 (39:29):
Or you think they're gonna beep it? I think they're
gonna beep it.

Speaker 1 (39:32):
Lawyers. Lawyers always win. It's it's the NFL. It's family friendly. Yeah,
Why I take that chance, you know, on the biggest
stage possible.

Speaker 2 (39:39):
No way? All right, what are you gonna watch on
the way home?

Speaker 8 (39:41):
Now?

Speaker 1 (39:42):
Dexter original Sin? Okay, are you gonna change it? You're
gonna change into sweatpants.

Speaker 2 (39:46):
For the flight?

Speaker 1 (39:46):
Probably, but I gotta They're on the top of my suitcase. Yeah,
I got too.

Speaker 2 (39:51):
You don't wanna say that at the time. I I
want to wrinkle my nice traveling jacket.

Speaker 1 (39:55):
We got comfy clothes, the standby for the flight, and
we'll see you guys in Los Angeles. But enjoy the
super Bowl. Enjoy friends and family. Enjoy those chicken wings.
Give it up, give it update. My wife dips. My
wife a smoker, and she is like, Babe, I'm already
starting to experiment cooking different meats.

Speaker 2 (40:15):
It's gonna be great.

Speaker 3 (40:16):
I'm like, you know, like when you have people for
a party, that's not time to experiment.

Speaker 2 (40:20):
But maybe do I have to pretend like I like it?

Speaker 1 (40:22):
If it's bad, absolutely okay, I will for you perfect. Hey,
enjoy the super Bowl. We'll see all you guys next week.
Enjoy the weekend. Yeah, until next time. Ariba there, baby,
we will see you in Los Angeles after the super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (40:37):
Enjoy it. We'll see you in the Promised Land.

This is Gavin Newsom

This is Gavin Newsom

I’m Gavin Newsom. And, it’s time to have a conversation. It’s time to have honest discussions with people that agree AND disagree with us. It's time to answer the hard questions and be open to criticism, and debate without demeaning or dehumanizing one other. I will be doing just that on my new podcast – inviting people on who I deeply disagree with to talk about the most pressing issues of the day and inviting listeners from around the country to join the conversation. THIS is Gavin Newsom.
