got a thriller in South Bend. De Sager just told you.
But Ohio State scores with one second left on the clock,
(00:47):
Orse somewhere around there. Unbelievable finish, unbelievable game. They survive
the top ten matchup against Notre Dame. Seventeen to fourteen
is the final score. Jason Martin, what's going on?
Speaker 1 (01:00):
A man?
Speaker 2 (01:00):
How are you?
Speaker 1 (01:01):
I'm good man. You know, we had all of this
great football throughout the day, and we knew some of
it would turn out to be a dud, but we
did get bookended today with some outstanding stuff. Now, I
know there's some games going on and maybe there's more
to come, but you got Florida State Clemson to open
the day that goes to overtime. That's a great game.
And then what we just witnessed in South Bend was
(01:24):
just those were both really hard fought, really physical, just
nail biting kind of games, and that's why we love
college football. But it was awesome to see that thing
come to an end about ten minutes ago and know
that the first thing that I am tasked to do
after that is to jump on the radio and talk
to the country about that football game.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yeah, it's weird, you know, I mean usually, I mean
in this time slot, stuff's always happening, and we're privileged
to do this. I don't know what the take is
on Ohio State Notre Dame. I mean, first of all,
for people who missed, it comes down to the wire.
Ohio State is on the road in South Bend. By
the way, this was one of many many great games today.
(02:04):
I shouldn't mention that, but this was obviously the headliner.
And yes, it comes down to the final seconds. Ohio
State completes an incredible play. Again, by the way, the
final score was seventeen to fourteen. I should specify that,
but I'm just trying to set the scene here for
what happened.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
In the one yes that you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
That's exactly what I was gonna say. So they trail
obviously goes out saying fourteen to ten. They get the
ball back about a minute twenty five left, go the
length of the field, and as Jason reference, there was
a third and nineteen play on the Notre Dame twenty two.
Kyle McCord, the player who is technically and only his
really his what second career starts it's his fourth, but
(02:46):
only a second since being named the starter, gets the
ball inside the five, and then Ryan Day, who was
criticized for some play calling stuff earlier in the game.
They decide on the final play what essentially amounts to
win or go home. They decide to run the ball.
They give it to Chip train them excuse me, a
(03:08):
one yard touchdown score as Ohio State survives. Like I said,
I just I don't, Jason, I don't know what the
take is.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
I mean.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
And by the way, Ryan Day and his postgame sound, now,
unfortunately we're a few guys down tonight, I don't know
if we'll be able to get that sound. But in
his post game you can see the emotion. You can
hear the emotion calling out the critics. That includes apparently
Lou Holtz, who said something this week that I that
must have slipped through through the cracks as far as
I'm concerned. But former Notre Dame head coach called out
(03:41):
Ohio State and Ryan Day in the post game. But
I'm rambling, Jason cut me off here. The bottom line is,
you could see how much this meant to Ryan Day.
You could see how much it meant to Ohio State
as they hold on to win seventeen to fourteen.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
Yeah. I mean, it was a huge game, and it
was a top ten matchup. It was two undefeated teams
that both have aspirations to be there in the end
with the final four in a college football playoff. And
I don't know after watching it which team I thought
was better, but it didn't matter. I do think that
in terms of just pure all skill talent, then yes,
(04:15):
Ohio State is a better football team. But you saw
a very well coached team on the Notre Dame side,
and I was just impressed with both defenses for the
most part during the game and just kind of the
flow of all of it. But apparently Ryan Day also
went off on Lou Holtz in pregame as well. So
(04:37):
here's what Holts said. Let me go ahead and tell
you this real fast, because I went ahead and found
it because I didn't know he had said anything either,
but he said this on the Pat McFee show. He said,
Notre Dame wins by ten. I believe that they're a
better football team in the Ohio State. Let me tell
you why. We have the best O line in the country.
Sam Hartman won't get his dirty his jersey dirty all year.
(04:59):
He has time to throw the ball. We have great
running backs. Team is averaging ten yards of carry. We
have great receivers, so we're set. You look at coach Day,
and I coached at Ohio State under Woody Hayes. We
won the national championship when I was there. I'm proud
of that. However, Day has lost to Alabama, Georgia, Clemson,
and Michigan twice, and everybody that beats him does so
because they're more physical than Ohio State, and I think
(05:21):
Notre Dame will take that same approach. That's that's what
Lou Holtz said.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Well, I'll tell you what the sager quick on his
feet with the sound from Ryan Day, I'm gonna toss
over the news desk to Sager. Has that sound give
us one second, we're efforting the sound.
Speaker 4 (05:38):
I cannot believe. This is a tough team right here.
We're proud to be from Ohio. It's always been Ohio
against the world. It'll continue to be Ohio against the world.
But I'll tell you what, I love those kids who
got a tough team.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Thank you very much to Sager.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
And I cannot believe by the way was in rev
that was the tail end of him say he's like
what lou hol said. I cannot believe that's that's what
that that take.
Speaker 2 (06:00):
But no, no, it's okay. I just think it speaks
to you know, we we we do this thing where,
you know, we we try to make every game out
to be like I think coaches especially, like it's just
one game and it's just not gonna define our season.
You can just hear in that sound, like you could
just hear in the sound how much this game meant
(06:22):
to Ryan Day, Like that's you know, if I have
no other takeaway, if I have no other takeaway from
this game, it's that, yes, Ohio State won. Yes they
very much are in great position going forward, because obviously
the schedule gets gets continually tough. Penn State obviously later
in the year, Michigan later in the year. You know,
(06:42):
you have obviously some at Wisconsin. Whatever. The point I'm
trying to make is that it's just funny because I
think sometimes, like we even in the media, coaches tell
us all we block out the noise, We don't hear
what you guys are saying. And that just shows me
how much this meant to him and how these guys
grow do hear what people say. And I think that
(07:03):
sound again just shows to me, Jason, how much this
one meant to Ohio State and two Ryan Day.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Yeah, and they knew they had the world watching this one.
We were all super excited about this kind of being
the nightcapper to this great day of all these ranked games.
And I think the one thing about Ohio State to
this point in the season was Kyle McCord has played quarterback,
but he's not been memorable, Like there's been nothing about
(07:30):
him existing as the quarterback of Ohio State that has
stood out. And usually that's a position we know very well,
We know the athlete play in that position, we know
about their future, we have question marks, and then we
have answers and all these things about him. But McCord's
kind of nonscript like most people don't really know anything
about him. I will say this, twenty one to thirty
(07:50):
seven for two forty, he didn't have a touchdown, but
he also didn't have an interception in the game. I
thought more more times than I like the way he
threw the football tonight. I don't think there's anything necessarily
spectacular about him, at least at this stage. But I
think that you could easily have thrown that football game away,
(08:11):
and I will say that he almost did. There was
one that went through the defender's hand on that last
drive that it would have been a really tough place.
It's not like it was a dropped interception. It was
a high ball, but that obviously would have ended the
game in the other direction. But you've got that guy
in that situation and he's able to make the strike
on third and nineteen and actually help you carve up
(08:32):
that field on that last drove. That's pretty impressive in
that circumstance, in a hostile environment, in a game where
a lot of people are gonna crumble.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Well, and I was gonna say too. You know, you
mentioned that, you know, there's nothing like he doesn't pop
off the screen the way that say Justin Fields did
when he played with Ohio State or CJ. Stroudd. Here's
the thing, though, maybe that's not who Ohio State is
this year, right, And you know, listen and part of
Ryan Day's comments after the game was that basically this
program's gotten whatever blah blah blah blah. You look at
(09:02):
what that defense did tonight. I mean the defense that
Notre Dame offense has been unstoppable all year. They hold
Sam Hartman and the passing game to one hundred and
seventy five yards passing. The run game was relatively effective,
but you hold Notre Dame to fourteen points, and you
hold them to seven points through the first three quarters.
So you know, maybe we just you know, and this
(09:23):
is the fun part about doing what we do, right,
is that there's different ways to get to the same
end result. And you know, tonight's not the night to
break down where they they rank on the Big ten
scale and what does it mean for Michigan, doesn't mean
for Penn State all that, But maybe this is just
a different Ohio State team. Maybe they don't have the
superstar quarterback, but maybe by the way, we know how
good Marvin Marvin Harrison is a Mechabuka, the quote unquote
(09:46):
number two receiver who's gonna go in the first round
of the draft, had seven catches for ninety eight yards. Today,
Trevion Henderson, the running back who was banged up for
most of the last year, had over one hundred and
four yards rushing. Maybe this is just a different team
than what we are used to with Ohio State. That
doesn't make it a good thing or a bad thing.
It just makes it a different thing. But when you
reference you know, Kyle McCord being solid, being steady, maybe
(10:08):
that's who they are. And by the way, maybe that's
a good thing for Ohio State this year. Maybe they
don't have to score forty forty five points to win
every game like sometimes they have in the past.
Speaker 1 (10:15):
Yeah, I mean, I think that's relevant. I also think
they kind of remind you a little bit of Michigan
like three years ago, don't they like because they don't
have a quarterback that leaps off the page. But they've
got a great defense and they run the ball pretty
well generally. So if you've got a quarterback out there
that and it sounds bad to say this, but if
he's just careful, if he's just a good caretaker out
(10:37):
there who can make a throw once in a while,
and he made more than once in a while, I
mean that that was a defensive battle between those two teams,
but there were some plays being made there as well.
They've got guys in the receiving game, but as long
as McCord's not out there throwing it to the other
team over and over again, they're always going to be
in it because of their defense. That's that's kind of
(10:57):
why they remind me a little of Ohio State or
maybe the Penn State teams when they didn't have quarterbacks,
but they had great defenses. And that's fine, Like you
can win that way to an extent. I guess the
only question I have is when you go up against
a high, high, high powered offense, how much are you
gonna put on that defense or is the offense really
(11:18):
gonna come to play on those days. I don't know
that we have fully seen that yet because they haven't
been tasked to deal with both sides of the ball
in that direction.
Speaker 2 (11:26):
Yeah, I guess my only counter that would be. I
don't know that they will face a more high powered
offense than they saw tonight. I mean, listen, Michigan, you know,
and you know, we haven't talked about them because they haven'
played anybody, but they did not look spectacular against Rutgers today.
Penn State obviously took care of business against Iowa. We
can make fun of Iowa. They're a solid defensive team.
(11:47):
I know, Penn State won thirty one nothing. I'm not
sold that they're definitively a more high powered offense than
Notre Dames. So maybe that's maybe that's the counter to
that is that, you know, Sam Hartman might be the
best quarterback they see all year. Really quickly, Jason, I
do want to just jump to the Notre Dame perspective. Yeah,
I mean, like I know, Notre Dame doesn't genuinely receive
(12:09):
a ton of sympathy on the national scale. I mean,
they're not a sympathetic program, but man, you know, I
mean you look at this program through the years, there's
been so many times in these big games where they
just weren't good enough. And so my only takeaway is
I feel bad because I thought they were good enough.
I thought they played well enough to win. I want
to give credit to Ohio State. This isn't to discredit
(12:31):
them for you know, finding a way to win in
a low scoring game. This is Ohio State I'm talking
about now. But you look at Notre Dame. You look
at the fact that they're at home. You look at
the fact that literally with under five seconds to go,
they had the lead in lost in regulation, they were
one play away from winning. It is worth noting, by
the way, some videos coming out from the game winning score,
(12:52):
Notre Dame actual only had ten players on the field
at that point. Multiple accounts are kind of sharing that
right now on social media. So I just bring it
up to say, like, man, oh man, oh man, Like
I feel bad for Notre Dame fans. I do. They've
been so close in so many of these games, some
of these big games, they have not been close. But
this was one they could have won and they just
(13:14):
couldn't pull it out.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
Yeah, and that's gonna happen to everybody. But you're right,
that was a game where you were gonna. I don't know,
this is tough to say, because I know a lot
of people get joy out of watching certain fan bases lose,
But I would have felt pretty bad for either fan
base in this one because of the way the game
was playing out, because of the circumstances and the story
(13:36):
of the football game itself. It was gonna be one
of those games where somebody was gonna have to lose
and it was gonna be unfortunate. It kind of reminds
you of a little of the Georgia Ohio State game, yeah,
in the College football playoff, where it just you hated
to see a team lose when such a just a
wonderful thing had taken place, and you had seen Ohio
(13:56):
State just play incredible football and just couple of breaks
win against them late and they end up losing that ballgame.
But you saw Stroud playing a game of his life
and things like that. That's what it was. I mean,
was that the best game you ever see Sam Hartman play?
Of course not, but he was playing against a defense
that he's not gonna see again most likely throughout this season.
(14:17):
It was impressive how they bottled them up and just
made everything difficult. In the third quarter. I swore I
had not seen anything vertical at all. Just felt like
every time I looked up Notre Dame was running for
a yard and then getting knocked down or breaking a
tackle to get a second yard. It just seemed like everything,
every yard was at a premium. But that was true
(14:37):
really for both of these two teams. It opened up
a little bit late, but this was just a well
played game and generally a well coached game on both sides,
and one team was eventually going to have to win
because sixty minutes is all they can play if they're
not tied.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
Yeah, I tend to agree with you. Is you know,
I know we're reacting in real time again for people
just joining us. Ohio State beats Notre Dame seven teen
to fourteen on essentially the final play of the game,
a short yardage play. They could have called a pass,
They call a run. They get the victory. And Jason,
I mean, like, I don't think there's some earth shattering
(15:13):
even if Ohio State had lost, I don't think there
was some earth shattering fire. This guy, this isn't gonna work.
I saw two really good teams on Saturday night. One
had to win, one had to lose. Fox Sports radio

Speaker 4 (16:06):
Toughness, that's it, physicality across the board, finish it off
having guts now, Like I like to know where Lou
Holtz is right now. What he said about our team,
What he said about our team. I cannot believe. This
is a tough team right here. We're proud to be
from Ohio and it's always been Ohio against the world,
and it'll continue to be Ohio against the world.
Speaker 1 (16:25):
But I'll tell you what.
Speaker 4 (16:26):
I love those kids who get a tough team. What
did they prove to you tonight in this victory that
you'll take away and run with toughness. Tell everybody's questioning
these kids all the time. We had one bad half
the last couple of years.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
That's it.
Speaker 4 (16:38):
Everybody wants to question these guys. These guys are warriors
right here to come back and win. This kid right
here to come back and the second half and win.
I'm emotional about this for a reason. A lot of
people question these kids and say a lot of things
about them.
Speaker 5 (16:50):
I love them.
Speaker 4 (16:50):
When someone attacks your family, to come in and win
like this is special. It's a great win for our
program and a great win for Ohio State.
Speaker 2 (16:57):
That was a fired up Ryan Day as Ohio State
wins in the final second seventeen to fourteen. Jason, I'll say,
I want to get to Colorado, Oregon. But I think
part of that might be that a lot of people
question Ryan Day two. I that was a little like
(17:17):
you calling out them, But I think a lot of
people are calling out him too. By the way, the
whole we've played one bad half in the last couple
of years.
Speaker 1 (17:25):
It's not accurate.
Speaker 2 (17:26):
Yeah, you know you lost in home in Orgers.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
Sorry did He's feeling it. I mean I said the
same thing to you before the show start, was just like, no, man,
we weren't questioning their toughness, we were questioning yours like
that's that was That was the thing, because we were
because generally the narrative was they played like you seem
to coach like it's a little bit too conservative at times.
I don't think it was a little too conservative. In
this game.
Speaker 2 (17:48):
It wanted fourth down, that they tried to run a
jet sweep. That's right, you know, yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:54):
I I asked that question to you guys in the
in the chat before the before the show began, as
the game was going on, I said, is it now
illegal to do a QB sneak in college football? I mean,
they had a third and one and a fourth and
inches and McCord's not exactly the smallest guy I've ever seen,
and Notre Dame has a history of letting people get
(18:16):
a quarterback sneak to hurt them badly. So I was
blown away. As you mentioned, a jet sweep on fourth,
kind of a weird call on third If it's that close,
I don't want to turn the ball over and hand
it backwards to where you have to go further than
where we started. On a play like that against the defense,
(18:37):
it's a relatively stout I'm going to go forward and
make them stop me from getting half a foot and
when they didn't, that to me was a bit of
a lack of aggression. But yeah, Ryan Day was speaking
more about himself, I think because a lot of the
people he's referring to aren't there anymore, first of all,
but again, he was feeling it. It was a big win.
It was he could celebrate that people will be talking
(18:59):
about Ohio State for the right reasons this week. Holtz. Look,
when you talk and you get beat down or the
subject that you were talking about gets beat down, this
is what happens. And it's very clear that Ryan Day
heard what was said because he said something about it
in pregame apparently on television also, and then he said
(19:20):
something right after the game, and they must have turned
it into bulletin board material and that's what athletes do.
So Marcus Freeman should probably call Lou Holtz and tell
them to stop talking before we play big games, because
I don't think that helped their cause.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
Well, I'll tell you what, Jason, you talk about. Bulletin
board material. There has been no program that has been
more motivated by bulletin board material than the Colorado Buffaloes. Jason.
Before we get to Oregon's dismantling of Colorado, here's what
Dan Lanning had to say before the game rooted.
Speaker 6 (19:53):
In substance, Godflash, rooted in substance. Today we talk with
our patch.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Right every moment.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
The Cinderella story.
Speaker 7 (20:04):
Is over, man, Right, they're fighting for clicks, we're fighting
for wins. There's a difference, right, there's a difference.
Speaker 6 (20:11):
This game ain't gonna be playing in Hollywood.
Speaker 1 (20:12):
It's gonna be played on the grass pan.
Speaker 7 (20:14):
It should be playing on the grass Let's go.
Speaker 2 (20:21):
Tell you what Ryan Day did his talking after the game.
Dan Lanning does it before and time. Yeah, and we'll
get to the halftime sound in a minute. But I'll
tell you what, whatever you think about it, I mean
it clearly worked. Oregon forty two, Colorado six. This was
thirty five nothing at halftime. Don't have all the stats
(20:43):
in front of me, but I do know that at
halftime Oregon had more touchdowns five than Colorado had first
downs four. Jason, what did you make of the splattering
of the Colorado Buffaloes in Eugene earlier today.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
Then it went kind of how we thought it was
going to. I don't know that everybody voiced it, but
this is what was supposed to happen, outside of Shador
Sanders and Hunter, who wasn't there because he's got a
lacerated liver, which by the way, sounds terrible. And we
saw the hit that caused it last week. I mean,
you saw against Nebraska and then you saw last week
(21:20):
against Colorado State that this is very much a work
in progress. It's already a success. They're three no, that's
three times as wins they had all of last season,
and they're not done. They're gonna win more games this year,
but they're not gonna beat Oregon. Oregon's a program that's
been an institution for I don't know how long in
college football. This was not one. You weren't going to
(21:40):
autin and winning this game. You just weren't. They were
a three touchdown underdog, and I did here before that.
Dion loved that it was his number, and I love
that people are thinking this way about us. Well they
should be, because you're not better at virtually anything than
Oregon is. You don't have the talent yet that they do.
You're a program and it's very infant and see, and
(22:00):
this was kind of like this was the this was
the check. This is where you ran into the boss
where you weren't prepared for it in the video game
and you had to go back and you know, find
your way to level up before you step back up
into that mix. Because this Oregon team was ready for
prime time. They've been in games like this before. For Colorado,
coming off that huge television audience, in that big time
(22:22):
performance last week and to come back, Uh, they just
weren't able to get up for this. But even if
they were, they just didn't have enough. We knew coming in.
Their offensive line was a problem. Should Or Sanders was
sacked three times before the game was like five minutes old.
You knew one team was just far bigger, far better,
(22:42):
and just far more advanced than the other one was.
It's not that the Colorado experiments of failure. It's that
we expected them to go three and zero and then
go lose badly to Oregon and USC and I still
think that's what's gonna happen.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Yeah, it is. Listen, I'll say that first, I'll say this.
I think I and maybe you are like the only
neutral Dion Sanders people going like, I think you and
I are both kind of tempered, Like I actually really
enjoy it. I actually think he's done a good coaching
job this year because I don't think that they are
(23:17):
very talented out It's not that I don't think that
they're talented, but but I'll just share some numbers that
I pulled earlier today because I was curious looking this up.
There are one hundred and thirty three teams in FBS
football right now. Okay, Colorado came into today, so these
numbers are probably worse. After Out of one hundred and
thirty three teams, they were ranked one hundred and twenty
(23:37):
fifth in total defense, one hundred and twenty ninth in
rushing offense, and one hundred and thirtieth in sacks. Allout, Jason,
I'm not a x's and o's guru here, but when
you can't defend anybody, when you can't run the football
because the O line can't run, block or protect the quarterback,
(23:57):
like this is kind of what happens when you play
a complete team, and a complete team that was clearly motivated.
I think the thing if there's a silver lining for Colorado.
I think the silver lining is that it's clear that
there is a lot of playing time to be had,
and that is the kind of team that Deon Sanders
is trying to build at Colorado. I think he's gonna
(24:19):
get there. He said after the game, this is the
worst that we're ever gonna be, so you better come
get us now. And I think that that Oregon, they
just look what I think Colorado wants to look like
here over the next three, four five years, I said
after the game. My first reaction was, you know, I
think I don't want to say it's the best thing that
could have ever happened to Colorado, but I Deon Sanders
(24:41):
in on the bus ride back to the airport should
have been texting every five star offensive lineman and defensive lineman, saying,
you saw Little Wayne last week, you saw the Rock
last week. Come be part of what you're doing. I know,
by the way, there's plenty of playing time to be
had here. So that's really my only takeaway is, like
you and I remember talking before the season. I said,
we both said, like, it isn't inconceivable that this team
(25:03):
starts one in four when you factor in TCU within
the opener Nebraska and then of course Oregon today, USC
at home next week, and so nothing has changed from
my perspective. I think, if anything, they've really overachieved through
three weeks, but that shows you how far they have
to go if they really truly want to be a lead.
Speaker 1 (25:20):
I think that recruiting point is a million percent true,
and I think that's I mean, I didn't think about
it from that perspective. I kind of went the old
school route and thought, if I'm Dion, like you never
want to lose. But there was a reality check moment
today and it wasn't necessarily for Dion, because I think
Dion was fully aware. But I think maybe it's possible
that some of the players were starting to feel themselves
(25:42):
a little bit, not because of anything I saw, but
just because it would be natural to start feeling yourself
a little bit when you're three and zero and you're
kind of the bell of the ball and everybody's talking
about you left and right. Today was the moment where
Dion can go into practice tomorrow or on Monday and say,
I told you we had a lot of work to do.
Now let's get to work like that's what the current guys.
(26:05):
But your point's more about the future, and it's exactly right.
You call him up and you're like, hey, you saw
what happened in Audson. This is why we need you, brother,
This is why we need you. Come be part of
the show. And you mentioned the celebrities, and you mentioned everything,
and you mentioned the entertainment value and how everybody's putting
cameras all over the Colorado program. Say never, you know,
never let it be said that NFL scouts aren't going
(26:27):
to know your name if you play at Colorado because
the cameras are going to be here. He's got a
lot to sell, and you're right, one of the most
important things he has to sell is, dude, you can
get in on the ground floor of the rebirth of
Apple basically right now, because everybody's gonna be continuing to
talk about us, but it's brand new. Next year is
(26:48):
going to be year two of the prime experience. Come
here and be a part of this. People will know
your name like it's gonna be something that he can sell.
So I don't think this was all bad because it
did remind his players this is the process. This ain't easy,
and there are people out there who are better than
you and want you to know it. It's going to
be hard and for the future. I think it's good too,
(27:11):
And I think it just reminded us that what we've
seen has been fun and cool. But this is not
a team that needs to be talked about in the
upper echelons of the sport.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
Yeah, and I think most people who understand the sport
but you know, understand that aspect of it. And I
think if anything, you know again, they've overachieved. Now the
goal is get Boil eligible, get those extra practices, and
go hit that portal really hard, and go hit the
recruiting really hard. Fox Sports Radio Aeron Tors Jason Martin

Jason do want to talk obviously about the rest of
a busy day in college football, but we got some
(28:05):
big games going on right now, so it's only appropriate
toss it over the news desk Steve de Sager, what's trending?
I was gonna. I was trying to quote Ryan Day
in my head, but I couldn't remember what he said.
Why'd you doubt me? And Jason Martin to Sager, why
don't you doubt us? I'm glad to against the world.
Oh sorry.
Speaker 8 (28:22):
The cut that he was referring to of old coach
Lou Holds when he talked postgame tonight Ohio State one
at Notre Dame seventeen fourteen. This is what Holds has
said during his interview on Friday in South Bend Pat
McAfee show on the ESPN again, not game day, but
day before, and everybody beats him does so because they're
more physical than the Ohio State and I think Notre
(28:44):
Day will take that same approach. Yeah, well then Bryan
today or physical. Well, let's remember the truth of this game.
As exciting as the last play was, each team was
stopped on fourth and one twice in the game, four
times total unsuccessful on fourth and one. So if Ohio
(29:06):
State doesn't get the one yard TD with one second
left to win, the game. I think we have a
narrative that would be continuing. Just for the record. The Irish,
also for the record, missed a forty seven yard field
goal in the first half and lost at home seventeen
to fourteen. You mentioned Oregon that final was forty two
to six over Colorado. Today Oregon had its largest ever
(29:28):
halftime lead over a ranked opponent, thirty five nothing, and
it was up to forty two zip early in the
second half. Quarterback bo nicks four total touchdowns, all in
the first half. Colorado finished with eight punts twelve penalties.
Number four Florida State won in overtime at Clemson thirty
one twenty four. Clemson missed a twenty nine yard field
goal attempt with under two minutes left in regulation. Victories
(29:51):
in the top ten for Georgia and Michigan for Texas
and Penn State. On Fox TV, the late game has
Number five USC leading at Arizona State to seven early
in the second quarter, and right now at number eight Washington,
it's the Huskies thirty one twelve over cows In can
that happen?
Speaker 1 (30:09):
I swore it was fourteen to seven. I looked down
and then I looked back up. Like five minutes later
and it was thirty one to six. It's like, what
just happened?
Speaker 8 (30:17):
Yeah, they got two touchdowns the center, two scores back
to back late first quarter, and then scored early in
the second quarter. So it went from fourteen to six
to thirty one six pretty quickly.
Speaker 2 (30:27):
It's gonna be so on brand for Oregon, Washington and
USC to be like three of the five best teams
in the country and all beating each other and missed
the playoffs and then leaves.
Speaker 3 (30:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Yeah, oh and then well that's it implied. I mean,
everybody's e By.
Speaker 8 (30:39):
The way, this is thirty one points in not even
a quarter and a half at Washington and Michael Pennox
only as ninety two yards passing, so stand by. Meanwhile,
the Washington State quarterback cam Ward had four hundred four
yards passing five total touchdowns. This was the earlier game
tonight on Fox TV. Cougar's thirty eight to thirty five
over Oregon State in a top twenty five match at
(31:00):
the PAC twelve conference has eight ranked teams this week.
And how about the Big Ten. No, we're not talking
about the Ohio State victory on the road. Indiana has
just won in four overtimes against Akron twenty nine to
twenty seven, and quite the comeback for Northwestern. They were
trailing at home to Minnesota. Northwestern with three touchdowns in
(31:21):
the fourth quarter to send it to overtime. Wildcats thirty
seven thirty four over Minnesota in ot That deficit overcome
by Northwestern tonight was their largest entering a fourth quarter
in any win in school history. The record had been
twenty point deficit early nineteen nineties at Illinois. By the way,
(31:41):
Utah beat UCLA fourteen to seven in a game where
the Utes scored on a pick six on the game's
first play from scrimmage. Twelfth ranked LSU one tonight on
a short field goal in the final seconds against Arkansas
thirty four to thirty one. Victories for Alabama and Oklahoma,
wins for Duke and Miami, for Tennis and Florida, and
(32:01):
by the way, Texas Tech was beaten by West Virginia
twenty to thirteen. Multiple reports day Texas Tech quarterback Tyler
Schuck suffered a broken leg to Major League Baseball. What
a comeback for the Pirates. They've existed since the eighteen hundreds.
This was their largest comeback win in team history. They
were trailing at Cincinnati nine to nothing after the third inning,
(32:22):
nine to one. In the sixth Pirates win the game
thirteen to twelve. We've got just over a week left
in the regular season. That is crushing for the Reds.
Texas shut out Seattle to nothing. The Rangers are first
in the AL West. Wins for the Cubs in Miami,
the Brewers magic number to clinch. The NL Central still
won over the Cubs, and we had rainouts at Yankee
(32:43):
Stadium and in DC. We're gonna have rain for NFL
games in the DC area. That means Baltimore as well,
and probably with the Jets too.
Speaker 2 (32:51):

(34:40):
the Colorado Oregon game for half a second and a
couple things. First of all, Uh, Lorena, go ahead. Play
that Dan Lanning sound from before the game rooted.
Speaker 6 (34:51):
In substance, cot flash rooted in substance. Today we talk
with our past.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
Right every moment.
Speaker 7 (35:00):
The Cinderella story's over, man, Right, they're fighting for clicks,
we're fighting for wins. There's a difference, right, there's a difference.
This game ain't gonna.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
Be playing in Hollywood. It's gonna be played on the grass. Pran,
It's gonna be playing on the grass. Let's go.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
That was Oregon coach Dan Lenning before the game. Unfortunately
we don't have the sound before halftime. But before halftime
he went even harder.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (35:27):
He said Oregon was up thirty five nothing. He said,
we're not satisfied. We're not done yet. I hope those
people have been watching every week are watching this week. Uh, Jason,
let me just ask you what I found the whole
thing curious, Like I thought the pregame thing was to
hype up his team the halftime stuff very clearly, it
seems to me, and by the way, I have no
(35:49):
fundamental problem with it, but it seems to me that
all of the noise that Colorado has been getting, it
feels like Dan Lenning and Oregon took that personally this
week is do do you think that's fair to say?
Is that fair to say?
Speaker 1 (36:03):
Yeah? That's That's kind of been the general consensus about
it is. They're the number ten team there, Oregon. They've
got a Heisman Trophy candidate at quarterback also, and they
weren't being talked about because everyone was talking about Colorado.
And I kind of rolled my eyes at it, like,
I get it. If you want to motivate your team
with that, that's fine. But honestly, man, like the Colorado
(36:25):
story is what everyone should be talking about because of
everything that has gone into it and because yeah, I mean,
it has brought a lot of attention to a place
that hasn't had attention in a long time. You can, again,
you can use that to motivate your team all you want,
but you're gonna take it personally, like I'll take it personally.
(36:46):
If we get to the end of the season, no
one's talking about Oregon and you somehow you beat Utah
for a change, or don't get knocked out in a
game you have no business losing, because Oregon loves doing
that late in the year. They love finding a way
to lose in those circumstances. I think this would have
been a far You can tell me I'm wrong on this.
(37:07):
I think it would have been far more effective to
keep your mouth shut, be respectful, and beat the brakes
off them. Even if you believed every word of what
Dan Lanning said. If you just keep that to yourself
and then go out there and rock them, then you've
made your statement and you don't have to do this.
If you're trying to motivate your team behind closed doors,
(37:28):
that's one thing. But the problem I have with this
is he knew there was a camera there. There's a
camera there. It's not like they had it placed and
didn't tell them about it. Oh, by the way, coach,
what you said in pregame, We're gonna run that for
the next ten years. I can guarantee you that those
comments are going to be played at Colorado next year,
and a year after and the year after that and
the year after that. This creates something for the future.
(37:50):
It's great for entertainment, it's great for the sports watching public.
But if it's me, he knew his team was gonna
boat race them, So why even bother when you've got
cameras around, say it publicly. Just be super respectful to Colorado.
You know they've earned all of this. It's gonna be
a tough challenge for us. And then beat the dog
crap out of them, and then let everybody else say, boy,
(38:13):
Oregon's better than we thought, because then they are talking
about Oregon, but they're not talking about it because you've
taken something personal and there's like a spilled milk mentality.
Does that make any sense?
Speaker 2 (38:22):
Yeah? Yeah, I mean I think a couple of things
is one. He was very respectful during the week. He
said all the right things. You know, he had said
something when Colorado left for the Big Twelve. Remember they
were the first ones to leave, and then before we
realized the conference was gonna break up, Dan Lanning said
something about, you know, who cares about Colorado? They haven't
won anything since they've been in this league to begin with.
(38:43):
People try to make it a big thing. It wasn't
a shot at Dien whatever. Yeah, I think that, you know,
he was respectful during the week, he did let the
football do his talking. And then I'll say a couple
other things. One, it does feel like he was offended,
like upset that he wasn't getting enough credit. But to
your point, hey, Colorado gave you this huge spotlight, but
(39:06):
you just showed America how good you are. You just
showed America that Bo nix Iss maybe a Heisman Trophy candidate.
The other thing that I'll say, and I tweeted this
earlier today, and I believe it. I do think part
of it, especially the halftime stuff when it was clear
they were gonna win. I do think part of it
was recruiting too. I think it was I know, I'm
gonna have to recruit against this guy over the next
however many years he's at Colorado is how however many
(39:28):
years he's in college football, And I will forever because
these two teams are going their separate ways after this year,
I will forever be able to say I'm the dude
that beat that guy by forty And maybe it's just
for the next year or two, but he can go
into kids' houses and if a kids considering Colorado, he
could say why would you go to Colorado. You want
to play for championships and have swag and have multiple
uniforms and do this and do that. Come to Oregon.
(39:50):
So I think it's all part of it. But I
do think the one thing that I will say, it
was very clear by watching it that he took offence
to something at some point point this week, whether it
was just attention or something else.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
Yeah, and I think that's a good point. I'd forgotten
about the fact that they're not going to be regular
opponents going forward. I think that I just kind of
look at it. He took something personally that's very very clear,
But he also knew that his team was better, and
so he wasn't saying something he was probably gonna regret
later most likely. That's that's intriguing, I would say. So, yeah,
(40:25):
that's that's a good argument about the future in terms
of having that over him and understanding that. I also
think it's gonna be a tough sell just to say
don't go to Colorado, go to Oregon because of that,
because you know what clicks lead to and trends.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Yeah, it's true, by the way, keeping everybody updated on
two late scores, Washington up thirty one to twelve against
cal us He up twenty one to ten, both those
in the second quarter. Coming back talk NFL. That's next.
Fox Sports trety Oh stop stop, you may make me
(40:59):
blush them there. All right, we're back. Fox Sports Radio
Aeron Torris, Jason Martin broadcasting live from the tireck dot
Com studios tyreck dot com. We'll help you get there.
An unmatched election, fast free shipping, free road hazard protection,
and over ten thousand recommended installers tireraq dot com the
way tire buying should be. As a sagatoldya, we still
(41:20):
have two top ten teams in action right now. Washington
all over cal thirty eight to twelve.
Speaker 1 (41:29):
Was finally turned it off and went back to USC
Arizona State because it's just a Panix and that they're
just ridiculous. But they just every time you look up
they've scored again.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
What are we even doing here with WATA don't. I mean,
they're unbelievable. They had seven hundred and nineteen yards of
total offense last week against Michigan State. I was on peacock,
so I did not see any of it, but this
is unbelievable. Thirty eight to twelve. It's not even halftime,
USC twenty one to ten with about four minutes to
go in the first half in Tempe, Arizona against Arizona State.
(41:59):
We'll keep updated on that. Jason, Do you want to
switch gears though? And I want to get to some
of week What is it week three of the NFL?
Man times going.
Speaker 1 (42:09):
Luckily it's only three, but it also feels like, man,
we're already we're already the third week of the season.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
I know, no, I know, it's it's going by fast,
and you know, I want to start with what we
saw on Saturday Thursday, not Tripnome, my Wards, not Saturday Night.
I do want to talk about Thursday night and the
San Francisco forty nine ers. They obviously played the New
York Giants Thursday Night game, and it was one that
(42:37):
was largely one sided. San Francisco wins thirty to twelve.
They hold the New York Football Giants to one hundred
and fifty yards of total offense in that game. I
want to talk about both angles, but I want to
start with the San Francisco angle. I mean, it's obvious, right,
I mean, they're fantastic, They're phenomenal, obviously made an NFC
Championship game last year before Brockbirdy gets hurts. And I
(43:00):
know that it's easy for us to say this because
they have played a third game. Not everybody else has.
Everybody else will be in action either Sunday or Monday.
But in a year where you know, Casey's looked good
but not great through two games, Phillies looked good but
not great through two games. Dallas is good, but we'll
talk about the Gravon Diggs injury here. Momentarily, Cincinnati is
(43:23):
zero and two. Is San Francisco the best team in
the league at least right now?
Speaker 1 (43:27):
Yes they are. I mean they've got the defense is absurd.
We already knew that coming in. The play calling is
absurd because Kyle Shannan's a genius. Christian McCaffrey's arguably the
most dangerous running back in the league because of everything
that he does for you. And we know what they
have a receiver. Let's not forget they didn't have Brandon
Ayuk in this game. They didn't have him at all,
(43:49):
and they were still doing all of this and then
you got Brock party And I know that's the real
topic here. And that's what everybody has wanted to opine
on since Thursday night. I don't understand the reticence to
give him flowers for what he's accomplished. I'm not sure
why everybody is so hesitant about this. Do I think
that he goes to any system and he's successful like this? No,
(44:11):
but he is. He is perfectly placed in this system
to do what Kyle Shanahan needs him to do. He's
not gonna be a guy it's gonna throw for five
hundred yards a game. But I also think that he's
generally not gonna lose you very many games, and his
floor doesn't seem to be all that low to me. Like,
I just don't know why we have to go and
(44:33):
immediately try to poke holes in brock Purty to explain
why San Francisco can't win a super Bowl with him,
because I think they can.
Speaker 2 (44:41):
So yeah, I do too, And I when I was
a little hesitant on them coming into the year, it
wasn't so much like him as a dude. It was
coming off major elbow surgery. And I'm not a doctor,
but I have been told some guys recover pretty, you know,
relatively easy from it. I've and told there are certain
(45:01):
quarterbacks that were never really the same after that kind
of injury. So that was my only hesitation. But I'm
with you, is is it was a fun story last year.
You know, obviously we know we know the narrative they
had Jimmy G. They start, you know, they started with
Trey Lance, they go to Jimmy G. Jimmy G gets hurt,
they're they're kind of stuck with Brock Purty obviously was
undefeated going into that NFC Championship game. I just think,
(45:24):
now he's just a B plus very good NFL quarterback
like he is. He doesn't have the physical tools of
Trevor Lawrence or whatever, Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson. But
as you said, like he's just a good NFL quarterback.
And I you know, I'm with you from the perspective that,
like I think sometimes you know, we try to take
(45:45):
a narrative and we try to turn it into something
that it isn't. By the way, Dion Sanders, they were
never gonna win a national championship that this year. It's okay,
if they go six and six, that's a success. And
I kind of think that's what it is with brock
Purty is we're still trying to like judge him as
mister irrelevant, the last pick of the draft, this and that,
and I just look at it and say, listen, Tom
(46:06):
Brady was a sixth round pick. Russell Wilson who you know, whatever,
he is what he is at this point in his career,
but he's a super Bowl winning quarterback that was drafted
not in the first round. Dak Prescott has become a
very good NFL quarterback that was not taken in the
first round. Like, we have a history in the NFL
of guys that were not top five picks, that were
not top ten picks. I mean Patrick Mahomes, how many
(46:26):
guys were drafted ahead of him, and his draft at
the quarterback position it was two or three or whatever.
It's like, we can just admit that brock perty is
just a really good NFL quarterback. And admittedly he is
in a great system with a great coach. His skill
set is very much you know, the skill set that
thrives in that system under Kyle Shanahan. He has plenty
(46:48):
of talent around him. But I think we could just
like we could stop with the mister irrelevant, We can
stop with this, we can stop with that. He's just
a very good NFL quarterback.
Speaker 1 (46:55):
Jason, Yeah, and I think that's fair. Look, my former
broadcast partner back on the show that I used to
host in Nashville on a daily basis, Roonan Foster, who
played for the Steelers forever. He went undrafted at the
University of Tennessee, and I remember him talking about this
on a fairly regular basis. I've never forgotten him because
he's a really thoughtful, insightful guy who understands the league
(47:18):
and understands the mentality that goes into a lot of
the decisions that are made and just some of the
thought processes. And he said him in his own brain,
year after year, felt like he had to keep earning
his job every year because he was undrafted, not because
he hadn't earned the right, because he clearly proved he
(47:39):
should have been in the NFL, considering he played his
entire career for one of the best organizations in the
league and was a stalwart and a leader on that team.
But he continually had to look over his shoulders because
of his draft position and because he went undrafted when
and I think he thought he was going to be drafted.
But it's the same kind of deal. I think that's
part of the brock per experience for a lot of
(48:02):
people watching him. Because he was drafted where he was,
because he was mister irrelevant, He's gonna have to earn
it over and over again with a certain crop of people.
And what's funny about this is this is the same
crop of people that can't wait to tell you where
Tom Brady was drafted. Sure like, if Tom Brady could
(48:23):
be drafted where he was and end up doing what
he's done, you're telling me brock Purdy can't have a
successful career in the National Football League. I just think
at some point, let's look at what he's done. I mean,
think about what Jimmy Garoppolo had really accomplished before San
Francisco paid him out the nose coming out of New England,
Like he hadn't done almost anything, and then he got
(48:45):
hurt almost immediately, so it didn't take much of a
sample size to get him paid. And good for him.
But I do think that I don't think we need
to find reasons to tear Brock Purdy down when he
hasn't given us a reason. No one's out here suggesting
he's about to be the MVP of the league. But
he's already impressed me this season more than I thought
(49:07):
maybe he would. And you're right, And the reasoning for
me again was coming off that injury, you know, how
long was it going to take him to round into form?
And didn't seem like it took him very long because
he seems to be very much in control of that offense.
Speaker 2 (49:21):
By the way, if you're playing a every time Washington
Husky score a touchdown drinking game at home, please seek
immediate medical attention. Washington has scored again. It is now
forty five to twelve with forty four seconds left in
the second quarter, USC up twenty one to thirteen. I
didn't mean to cut you off there, Jason, but Washington
(49:41):
scored again forty five points of the first half. But
we'll get back to the NFL, And you know, I
agree with you, And I also think the other thing too,
is like, you know, one really good quarterback and I
think two. We have to look at the competition in
the NFC as well. Is that you know, you start
talking about best quarterbacks in the NFC, he's I think
he's right in that Dak Jared Goff. I mean he's
(50:04):
not as I guess you would say accomplished as those guys.
But that's kind of what the NFC quarterback situation is
right now is guys that have really good pieces around
them don't beat you, don't beat themselves. You know, Dak
maybe a little bit more than you know than what
I just mentioned with who did I say here? I
(50:25):
said Brock Purdy, Dak and I can't remember, oh, Jared Golf. Yeah, So,
like like none of them are super high ceiling guys,
but they get the job done generally, don't beat themselves whatever.
So I'm with you it is I think they are
a great team. I think he's a great story, but
I think we have to kind of cut out the
you know, the the mister relevant all that as if
(50:47):
it's like, you know, like like still the biggest thing
like that, that's not the thing. He's pasted it. He's
beyond it. He is who he is really quickly. With
the New York Football Giants, they're so what.
Speaker 1 (50:58):
I tell you, what I tell you for the season,
same thing you were saying, right, Yeah, this is exactly
what I thought they were gonna be. They're not very good,
So I mean, not with I mean unfortunate with Barkley. Yes,
but this is exactly what I was anticipating from Danny Dimes.
This is exactly what I was anticipating from this team.
It's what you thought as well. Last year was the peak.
(51:21):
It was not them continuing to clown the mountain. They
overperformed last year and now they're regressing to the mean.
Speaker 2 (51:27):
Let me ask you a question, and I think I
know the answer. Do you think that we ever get
to a point so like Daniel Jones got the relatively
big contract, you know, four year contract, one hundred and
sixty four year extension, hundred and sixty million. It's I
get It's not Patrick Mahomes money, it's not Joe Burrow
Money's not Justin Herbert money. Do you think we ever
get to a point where with the way rookie contracts work,
(51:52):
the fact that for the most part, we usually get
a pretty good quarterback crop where there are deemed to
be three or four first roundish type talents every year.
Sometimes it's a little bit more. I know, two years
ago Kenny Piickett was the only first rounder, but this
year we could have five, six seven first rounders. Whatever
do you think we ever just get to the point
where a team just basically says like, yeah, you're good,
(52:14):
and you're not like you're not mediocre, you're not Zach Wilson,
you're not whomever. But we're just not gonna pay you
and start over. Like, I know it was hard for
the Giants because they made the playoffs last year, but
I think we all kind of knew that what Daniel
jones ceiling was, he probably hit it last year. As
you said that, you're never that they're never gonna be
better than last year. I mean, they might be as good,
(52:37):
they might catch some breaks. Maybe the NFC's a little
bit down. But I was just thinking about that, is
like I know, there was no way to really know
how good this this upcoming quarterback draft would be, but
like say this was this this quarterback draft was last year.
Like I don't know, I just I find it so
interesting because now you owe him one hundred and sixty million,
four years whatever and you're kind of stuck with him
(52:59):
for a little while, and I just I don't know,
I was just thinking about it, is like we all
knew what his ceiling was, we all knew what his
limitations were. He got paid because again, ultimately, like they
did make the playoffs. But I just I don't know.
I was just thinking about that this week, as like,
at some point somebody's gonna say, we don't care if
you can get us to the fringes of the playoffs.
We're just gonna try over with somebody else.
Speaker 1 (53:19):
Yeah, I mean, look, it's a really it's an interesting
kind of discussion to have because somebody in the league
is always going to be the worst at quarterbacks. Somebody
is always going to be fifteenth in the league. Somebody's
always going to be in twentieth in the league. I
don't mean the same team over and over again. I
mean they're not everybody can be the best at that position.
(53:40):
There are only a certain number of the league quarterbacks.
The teams that have them generally are near the top
of the standings. But how are we viewing running backs
right now? A lot of the backs that aren't getting
paid aren't bad, They're just replaceable in the eyes of
the franchises. And I think that's what you look at.
It's like, eventually, do you just kind of take the
risk and say, hey, man, you're actually pretty good, but
(54:05):
we can't continue to just be mediocre, Like, mediocrity is
not why we're in business here. If I don't think
that my quarterback can win me a Super Bowl, if
I legitimly have seen enough for that conclusion to be
paramount in my mind, that I'm not gonna pay him.
It's just that simple. I understand that sometimes you have
to have bridge years and all this, but you don't
have to have one hundred and sixty million dollar contract
(54:26):
bridge years you can afford. I mean, you tell me
everybody listening, you tell me Daniel Jones replaceable. I mean,
he's a good he's a pretty decent football player, But
is he in any way irreplaceable or is he closer
to a Dalvin Cook or a Zeke or somebody like that,
(54:47):
even maybe because of his age, like a Clyde Edwards
Layer or somebody like that, where it's just you kind
of know what it is and it's okay, but it's
never gonna get you to the top of the mountain team. Personally,
I would rather bottom out than win eight games a year,
because they'll win eight games a year forever. If they
bought him out, they have a chance to get a
(55:09):
game changer at the one position where it ultimately matters,
And that's what.
Speaker 2 (55:13):
I was gonna say, Like if they had, Like again,
I know it's hard because you made the playoffs, and
like I don't think because they made the playoffs you
could do it, But like, would the New York Giants
be in better position going forward today if they had
just basically said after last year, Daniel Jones, you're not
the guy and they had just signed Tyrod Taylor or
(55:35):
Andy Dalton or whoever this year and been in position
to get a top ten pick next year, whether it's
maybe you don't get number one, maybe you don't get
Caleb Williams, but you get a Quinn Ewers and Michael
Pennix Shador Sanders obviously nobody knew how good he was
at the time. Like, would your organization be better today
if you had just said, Daniel Jones, thanks for the memories,
(55:55):
thanks for the playoff. You know, run, but we're not
paying you because I I think you probably would be. Now,
there's no guarantee you hit on the quarterback pick, but
there is also the possibility that the guy that you
end up taking has the higher upside than whoever you
end up than keeping Daniel Jones. Does that make sense.
Speaker 1 (56:13):
Yeah, it doesn't. I would even say this. So you're
saying you're not guaranteed to hit on that pick, right,
It's about a twenty five percent success rate for quarterbacks.
But you can make the argument you didn't hit with
Daniel Jones exactly. That's the thing, Like, if you didn't
hit with Daniel Jones, and by hit, I mean really hit.
You guys know what I mean when I say hit.
Everybody listening understands what a hit and a miss is.
(56:36):
I can't say they hit with Daniel Jones. At best,
they bunted and barely made it on base. Like, is
that the kind of thing that you're going to hit
your wagon to for five years for fear of maybe
striking out? No, I don't think so. I think the
organizations that win, especially the ones that can actually turn
it around, are ones that are willing to take risks
(56:57):
because they've got nothing to lose.
Speaker 2 (57:00):
And I and listen, I know that there was no
way a year ago you could know how good this
quarterback class would be. We knew Caleb Williams Drake May
at the top. We didn't think shad Or Sanders was
a potential first round pick. Quinn yours has obviously played
very well this year. So I'm not sitting here saying
that like you had to know and shame on you.
(57:21):
But I do think if you had just said, Daniel Jones,
thanks again, we're gonna roll with Tyrod Taylor for the year,
We're gonna roll with Andy Dolton for the year, whatever
and try to position ourselves or maybe you know they.
I guess you wouldn't have been in position to take
a quarterback last year, but I don't know. I just
I just think I find it so interesting, is that,
like there's just this this need to always kind of
(57:41):
pay the quarterback, and I think it comes back to
by you. Fox Sports Radio ratoris Jason Martin. We are

are brought to you by Progressive Insurance Progress It makes

Com Coming up. Do want to switch gears Jason from
(58:04):
one quarterback to another? Gotta discuss Joe Burrow, what's going
on with him? What's going on with the Bengals. That's next.
Fox Sports Radio, Welcome back everybody, Fox Sports Radio, Aaron
Towards Jason Martin broadcasting live from the Tairaq dot Com studios.
(58:24):
Just a minute ago, we were talking about if the
San Francisco forty nine ers are the best team in
the NFL, want to switch gears to a team that
I think we maybe would have made the argument four
a month ago, but they unfortunately have started oh and two.
That is the Cincinnati Bengals, who have not only started
oh and two, but it is kind of worth noting. Uh,
the Cincinni Bengals are zero and two in the division,
(58:46):
which is brutal. Obviously, last year they started oh and
two as well. This is a little bit different though.
They are now two full games behind Baltimore oh and
two overall, with back to back losses to Cincinnati and
to Baltimore to in the season. And more importantly, Joe
Burrow is questionable going into a Monday night game against
the Los Angeles Rams. Zach Taylor basically said, it's a
(59:10):
game time decision, all that good stuff. Jason, what do
you make of the health of Joe Burrow and the
health of the Cincinnati Bengals season, as it's already on
the brink just two games.
Speaker 1 (59:22):
It's not good. Neither one of them is good. I
think that we just kind of weren't up to speed
on the injury before the season. It just kind of
wasn't talked about all that much. We thought maybe it
was just rust in Game one. But if you actually
watch the tape, and you know, I've looked at several
people and listened to several people that have gone back
(59:43):
and watch film in the first couple of weeks, and
he just can't escape, He can't move, he can't shift
in the pocket properly. He hadn't been right since the
beginning of the year, and then he you know, aggravated
it last week and now he's questionable, perhaps can't play
on Monday night. It's not good. And I think the
thing that kind of stands out I saw, or at
(01:00:05):
least I think I heard a podcast. I think it
was on the Athletic that was suggesting this. But they're
not particularly special as a football team outside of about
three guys. Sure he's won Jamar's one and you might
put Higgins in that list, and that's sort of it.
They have a good football team, but without him or
(01:00:27):
Jamar in particular, there's nothing all that remarkable about them.
If he's not right, and he hasn't been to this
point in the season, you see what you see what
that looks like. They're in real trouble. I mean the
fact that they've lost both those games in division and
I think, more than anything, the fact that Baltimore looks
the way Baltimore does, Baltimore winning these games, Lamar looking
(01:00:49):
the way he is throwing the football. Greg Roman being
out of there has made a massive difference for them.
They look very, very good. The Browns look mediocre. Pittsburgh
looks like they were over hyped before the season, and
the Bengals are playing their way out of this thing
right now. And now you're looking at h and two
playing against a decent team on Monday night, maybe not
(01:01:12):
having Burroughs services, but even with that, like the AFC
is going to be a dog fight, and if you
fall too far behind too fast, the chances of you
being able to come back and make some kind of
an impact or even make the playoffs, they don't have
much more room to fall before that becomes a very
daunting ask.
Speaker 2 (01:01:32):
Yeah, it's an interesting point. I hadn't really thought about it,
but I'm trying to think, like, like, what is special
about them besides Burrow and Chase Haggins is obviously you
know in the upperrasch Lin all that, But you know,
I don't and maybe I'm missing somebody. Maybe there's somebody
on defense that's absolutely unbelievable that I'm not thinking of.
(01:01:53):
I mean, they got dude, Sam Hubbert's good, you know,
Dax Hill's been good through the last couple of years.
But I don't think there's anything special about them. Joe
Mixon obviously is good, but he's an older player.
Speaker 1 (01:02:04):
Yeah, I mean, Jesse Bates was good. I mean, it's
not like they had nobody. I'm not suggesting that. I'm
just saying, like, you talk about difference making guys, and
the list is fairly short with them, and I would
say it's actually fairly short with almost every team in
the league. There are a few guys that make them
a completely different football team. A lot of times the
(01:02:25):
quarterback has to be involved in that list if you're
going to be a contender, and certainly if Burrow's not there,
I don't think they've got much of a chance to
do anything.
Speaker 2 (01:02:36):
Well, it'll be interesting. They don't play until Monday night,
so that gives them a little bit of wiggle room,
but you talk about essentially a must win game. They
host the Los Angeles Rams Monday night. We get a
double Monday night game again, so it'll be interesting to
see the latest down Joe Burrow again, he is questionable
right now. Fox Sports Radio er towards Jason Martin broadcasting
(01:02:57):
that I from thedirec dot com studios. Coming up, we
talk about the other big injury of the week and
how it could impact another contender. We'll discuss that next.
Before we do, though, toss it over the news desk
Steve de Sager, What is new.
Speaker 8 (01:03:10):
While we're talking about NFL? Dolphins wide receiver Jalen Waddle
is out tomorrow with a concussion. He took an illegal
hit at New England last game Denver's at Miami. Brown's
running back Nick Chubb will have surgery next week for
a torn MCL, but his ACL is not fully torn,
according to NFL Network. If so, he could play next year.
Charge A running back Austin Eckler out again tomorrow's sprained ankle.
(01:03:32):
The Ravens will be missing seven injured starters this weekend,
including wide receiver Odell Beckham with an ankle injury. Today,
Baltimore cut quarterback Josh Johnson and elevated running backs Melvin
Gordon and Kenyon Drake. The Colts cut running back Dion
Jackson and elevated running back Trey Sermon. Colts rookie quarterback
Anthony Richardson out tomorrow with a concussion, Panthers rookie QB
(01:03:54):
Bryce Young will miss one to two weeks with an
ankle injury, and the Saints place running back Jamal Williams
on ir Saints at Green Bay's Fox TV game tomorrow.
In college football, in the top ten, Tonight, Ohio State
was a winner seventeen to fourteen at Notre Dame on
a one yard touchdown with one second left, and Emmanuelaccho
pointed this out and just did again on the Fox
(01:04:15):
halftime show of the USC game that Notre Dame's defense
had only ten players on the field for its last
two plays. Tonight, in the home loss, the Irish in
the first half missed a forty seven yard field goal,
wound up losing by three. Right now at halftime, Number five,
USC leads twenty one to thirteen at Arizona State. Caleb
Williams with one touchdown pass one hundred and forty four
(01:04:37):
yards through the air. Williams has two touchdown runs as well.
Halftime at number eight Washington ats Huskies forty five to
twelve over Cal The Washington Huskies got an early pick
six for a seven to nothing lead, and just a
few minutes later a pun return for a touchdown. It
was fourteen to nothing before the offense even took the field. Tonight,
(01:04:58):
Fresno State's winning again twenty three to ten over Kent
State in the third quarter. Looks like the Bulldogs will
go to four and the late game is underway. Hawaii
at home is down seven to nothing late first quarter
against New Mexico State, and James Madison won at Utah
State forty five thirty eight. I saw a clip of
the James Madison coach disagreeing with the call on the sideline,
(01:05:20):
actually showing a phone to the referee during the game
with the clip of the play on it somewhat illegal.
Speaker 2 (01:05:28):
I was gonna say, isn't that like they're like there's
something you can't have devices on the sidelines.
Speaker 8 (01:05:33):
Yeah, it's yeah, it's It's okay for the Astros and
Red Sox, but yeah, I believe in football. Not good
battle of three and oh teams. Missouri beat Memphis thirty
four to twenty seven, South Carolina down Mississippi State thirty
seven to thirty and Kansas State beat UCF tonight forty
four to thirty one. Northwestern came back to win an
overtime against Minnesota. Indiana in four overtimes, beat Akron. Top
(01:05:58):
ten victories for Georgia and Michigan for Texas and Penn
State by the way, Penn State thirty one to nothing
over Iowa, ranked twenty fourth in the country. Iowa's offense,
let's just say it out loud, not known for their offense.
It was even worse tonight. They had two first downs
until the final drive of the game in the rain.
(01:06:19):
At Penn State, they wound up with four first downs
for the contest, a ranked team had four first downs
in four quarters.
Speaker 1 (01:06:27):
To Kirk Farence Man just got to extend the first
time you can.
Speaker 2 (01:06:30):
First of all, Kirk ference is a Yukon guy. Be
careful what you say. But I have a buddy who
was at the game, and I texted him. I said
it was ten to nothing, and then I stopped paying attention.
It was thirty one nothing. How what happened? And he goes.
Penn State's entire strategy was we can't lose if we
don't do something amazingly stupid. That's literally the exact que.
(01:06:51):
So well, so, I mean I was a little enthralled
with Ohio State. Notre Dame, forgive me, but I guess
their entire philosophy was, Hey, if we don't throw pick
sixes and whatever, we're gonna win comfort. It worked.
Speaker 8 (01:07:04):
It worked, dru Aler with four touchdown passes. It was
time of possession that you really only see in like
an army game. Penn State had the ball for forty
five and a half minutes out of sixty. Iowa finished
with seventy six total yards in this game. On the ground,
this is the whole team rushing seventeen carries, twenty yards,
(01:07:25):
four fumbles.
Speaker 1 (01:07:26):
Yeah, Man, Kirk Farence is the Daniel Jones of college football.
It's keeping Brian Farrence still being oc is still mind
boggling to me.
Speaker 8 (01:07:35):
Remember all the Kirk fer I mean, this is like
Charlie Weiss at Notre Dame. He came so close let's
get me an extension. Yea Kirk Ference used to be
an NFL assistant, did he might leave? Let's get him
an extension. Who are you bidding against? Okay, all right,
that's how many times have they won the conference in
the last twenty years?
Speaker 2 (01:07:55):
Okay, So sig, I don't know if you reference this.
My buddy's telling me he said total plays was ninety
seven to thirty three. Oh my, I won't say that.
Our competition in media, their stats in info can't find
the last time one team got sixty four more plays
than another in a single game. So there you go.
Speaker 1 (01:08:14):
Wow, sounds like a women's college basketball.
Speaker 2 (01:08:17):
Yes, it's like a Yukon.
Speaker 8 (01:08:18):
Yeah, imagined if they were stopping after every first down.
Speaker 2 (01:08:23):
Thank god we got the clock rules.
Speaker 3 (01:08:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:08:25):
Anyway, AP says that Iowa's four first downs fewest in
a game for a ranked team since two thousand, which
was probably also Iowa USC's dominant team of two thousand
and two. Did it twice against two different opponents, I
mean that season against Notre Dame and against Colorado. Speaking
of Colorado, Wow, down forty two to nothing at Oregon
(01:08:45):
early second half ducks forty two to six is the
final and the comeback of Pittsburgh Pirate's history. Tonight largest
yes in their history, down nine to nothing at Cincinnati
after the third inning, down nine to one in the
sixth Pirates thirteen twelve the final, the Reds in the
bottom of the ninth left a runner at third, of course,
strikeout and a flyout. We had just over a week
(01:09:08):
left in the regular season. The Reds fall two and
a half games behind the Cubs for that last wildcard spot.
Cincinnati's record seventy nine and seventy seven. We had rainouts
at Washington and at Yankee Stadium. By the way, we
will have rain for the NFL games at Washington and
Baltimore and New York with the Jets back to.
Speaker 2 (01:09:25):
You, Thank you very much. Steve Seger, Fox Sports Radio,
Fox Sports Saturday Enter towards Jason Martin, broadcasting live from
the tire rack dot Com studios. Seger will rejoin us
in just a few minutes to get you caught up
on all the other stuff that fell through the cracks today. Jason,
just really quick, do you want to address I don't
mean to make this a hour sad hour, but obviously
(01:09:46):
we just talked about Joe Burrow's calf injury and you
know the fact that he might not play this week,
and it'd be you know, we'd be remiss if we
didn't talk about the other big injury news of the week,
as Trevon Diggs, star cornerback of the Dallas Cowboys defense,
in the NFL ACL injury in practice. I mean, I
think that's you know, you never want to have something
like this, but to have it in practice. You know,
(01:10:09):
this is a guy that through the years has been
just an insane cover corner eleven interceptions two years ago,
already had one interception through two games this season, he's out,
and you know that that that Cowboys defense, which has
been just so lights out through the first two games,
takes a brutal, brittle, brutle hit.
Speaker 1 (01:10:28):
Yeah, if there's not really a take here other than
I hate that for him, I hate that for Cowboys
fans hate that for the Cowboys generally. It's not you know,
it's not my squad if you want to go there,
but you never want to see that happen, and to
hear any anytime it happens in practice, it feels even
ten times worse when I saw that, you know, update
email come through a few days ago when that when
(01:10:51):
that happened, I happened to be out at the time,
and it was just like, oh, come on, I mean, one,
they have a chance to be just an all time
great defen. That's a big hit for them now. They've
still got a lot of talent on it side of
the ball. I don't think it means that they can't
compete for the Super Bowl. It just every little you need,
every break, you know, league that's so closely decided so regularly,
(01:11:16):
and he, I mean, he could be a feaster famine
kind of guy's he can pick six. He can also
get beat because sometimes he actually goes for broke and
there have been guys that have done that through the years.
But man, he has had a lot of positive things
happen for the football team that he has played for
in this first couple of years. And it was just
like one of those bummer kind of moves, similar to
(01:11:37):
like Nick Chubb on Monday and it like, we've had
a couple of big names, right, you had you had
a couple of Monday night ones with Aaron Rodgers and
Nick Chubb, and then you had Travon Diggs go down
and practice It's just this is this is not the
league I'm looking for this year. Like we can go
ahead and anytime you guys want to stop with this
whole thing, the football gods are free to let this
one go.
Speaker 2 (01:11:57):
Yeah, total bummer the House Cowboys, number one scoring offense
in the NFL, or number one scoring defense, excuse me
in the NFL, the number one total defense in the NFL.
Losing Trevon Diggs. I mean there is no silver lining.
I think the obvious, you know, from a football perspective,
if there is one, schedule is manageable these next few weeks.
(01:12:17):
Arizona this week, New England Patriots next week, before things
get tough for forty nine Ers Chargers Rams. Starting the
second weekend of October, Fox Sports Radio Aeron Torres, Jason Martin,
we are broadcasting live from the Tyreck dot Com studios.
Keeping the update on a couple of late scores. USC
up twenty one to thirteen. Early third quarter at Arizona State.
(01:12:38):
The Washington Huskies are up fifty two to twelve. They
have just it looks like they have scored again. It
was forty five to twelve at halftime. They have just
punched the ball in as I said, if you and
your friends have started a Washington Huskies drinking game, please stop,
seek a immediate medical attention. The Washington Huskies unstoppable. By
(01:13:03):
the way, three Saturdays from now, October fourteenth, Washington plays Oregon.
Tell you what, Jason, we'll come back. We'll react to
some of everything that happened in college football throughout the day,
but we'll also bring into Sager for his extended update.
He's got all sorts of good stuff on everything that
we've missed throughout the day. To Sager is next Fox
(01:13:23):
Sports Radio. Welcome back everybody. Fox Sports Radio, Eric Toords
Jason Martin broadcasting live Fromthetireck dot Com studios as we
do every Saturday around this time. Want to tell us
over the news desk to Sager, a lot of stuff
to catch u up on the floor's yours certainly do.
Speaker 8 (01:13:45):
And let's start in the top ten, where we had
the Ohio States at No. Tre Dame game at Bears repeating,
each team was stopped on fourth and one two separate
times in the game. Each Ohio State does win by
three on the road. As Notre Dames defense had only
ten players on the field for the last two plays.
Speaker 3 (01:14:05):
Train them off is right hip two wide to the
right snap McCord hands to train them straight in the zone,
touchdown chip train them for the second straight week. Boge,
a converted linebacker finds the end zone and that'll win
it for Ohio State.
Speaker 8 (01:14:18):
One yard TD with one second left. Paul keels from
lear field with that call. Also in the top ten,
we mentioned Penn State shutting out Iowa thirty one nothing,
and it was really worse than that. We had the
game at Clemson today that went overtime. Clemson is now
zero to two in Conference fourth rank. Florida State wins
it despite trailing ten to nothing in the second quarter.
(01:14:39):
Thirty one twenty four in ot seminoles the final and
if you watch the broadcast, you heard the story of
Clemson's kicker to the game.
Speaker 2 (01:14:47):
The guy was the backup kicker. Crazy story.
Speaker 8 (01:14:49):
Previous three years, he'd had three extra points and that
was it. So he wasn't playing at all. So he
decided not to be on the team this year. They've
had kicking problems. They contacted him this past week, can
you come back.
Speaker 2 (01:15:02):
On the team. He was living four hours away from campus.
Speaker 8 (01:15:05):
But technically he was still a student because of the
online and so he you know, I was watching a
couple of his extra points today. They just barely tucked in,
and you know, the college extra points are very close.
And then it comes time for a twenty nine yard
field goal attempt and all the glory with under two
minutes left in regulation, and he missed the kick. It
(01:15:25):
goes to ot and Florida State wins at Clemson and
key FSU scored a touchdown and a fumble return late
in the fourth third quarter. So as a team, Seminoles
had twenty carries twenty two yards on the ground and
they still wind up winning. Meanwhile, UCLA was at Utah.
You ranked eleventh in the country this week. Bruins had
(01:15:45):
the ball first.
Speaker 2 (01:15:46):
Safte More intercepted to Ready Reid ten five. It's a
touchdown up pick six.
Speaker 4 (01:15:54):
On the opening play and Utah strikes first here on
Hope coming.
Speaker 2 (01:15:59):
So it's a quick seven nothing.
Speaker 8 (01:16:01):
That call on kall amap points. That was the call
on call, ap pointing out that UCLA was getting shut
out after three quarters, fourteen to nothing. First time a
Chip Kelly team failed to score in the first three
quarters since the Eagles in twenty fifteen. Eventually fourteen to
(01:16:21):
seven Utah. The final you mentioned before the break aeron
Torres at October fourteenth. Fortunately for all of US fans
who love college football, it's only three weeks away. It's
not only Oregon at Washington, it's USC at Notre Dame
that night. Oh so, hello, we thought we had a
good day here, bring on some more. Oregon ripped Colorado
forty two to six. It was forty two to nothing
(01:16:43):
early in the second half. Colorado's two way star Travis Hunter,
out three weeks, took a late hit last Saturday against
Colorado State. Colorado was sacked seven times in the blowout loss.
Today and here you've got Washington in its home game tonight,
up fifty two to twelve early third quarter against cal.
We had wins late night for UNLV for well, we'll
(01:17:05):
see about USC. They're only up twenty one to thirteen
at Arizona State. That's on Fox TV early in the
third quarter. Fresno State's now up fifty to ten late
in the third against Kent State. The late game second
quarter has New Mexico State leading ten to nothing at Hawaii,
and then Shenandoah University Division III football got in the
news today Portland. Yeah, it was eighty one to no.
(01:17:29):
They had a safety get into the game. Hayley van Vorhees,
first woman to ever play an NCAA football game at
a position other than kicker. She came on in the
first quarter third downstop. She was unblocked at the line,
got a hit on the quarterbacks, so she went into history. Meanwhile,
we had what the athletic referred to as the Pac
(01:17:50):
two championship game today, Oregon State at Washington State on
Fox TV. Washington State's quarterback since national again cam Ward
four hundred four three yards passing five total touchdowns, thirty
eight to thirty five the final against fourteenth ranked Oregon State.
It was thirty eight twenty one with six and a
half minutes to go. Update it looks like USC has
(01:18:11):
kicked a field goal. Yes, that is good, twenty four
thirteen the lead in the third at ASU, Alabama was
trailing at home to Ole Miss seven six at halftime.
Remember Jalen Milroe did not play at quarterback last weekend
at South Florida and that game was tied three to
three in the third quarter. He had his shortcomings today,
let's say, but he found wound up on the winning
(01:18:34):
side one TD one interception twenty four to ten. The
final against Mississippi North Carolina Winter Tonight forty one, twenty
four at pitt Drake May one touchdown pass two hundred
and ninety six yards and sacked five times. Eighteenth ranked
Duke won at Yukon forty one to seven. Duke is
four and oh And next Saturday night, Duke Hoast Notre
(01:18:57):
Dame Yukon by the way, zero to four. But it's
next two games are against Utah State and Rice. So
you're looking forward to W and then W for Yukon
football here, not enough congratulations, well, not quite the enthusiasm
we had for Yukun football at the beginning.
Speaker 2 (01:19:14):
Number one high school basketball recruit in America is on
an official visit to Yukon this weekend.
Speaker 1 (01:19:18):
That's all.
Speaker 8 (01:19:18):
So we're almost a basketball season, is essentially what that
answer is. Next Saturday, it's Florida at Kentucky. Florida settled
for five for five on field goals. They wound up
winning twenty two to seven over dreaded Charlotte. Number twenty
three Tennessee forty five fourteen winners against ut San Antonio
Valls had over three hundred yards rushing in the game,
just in the first half. Quarterback Joe Milton three total touchdowns.
(01:19:41):
Temple hosted number twenty ranked Miami, and the attendance was
just seventeen thousand in the Philadelphia Eagles Stadium forty one
to seven Hurricanes.
Speaker 2 (01:19:49):
The final.
Speaker 8 (01:19:50):
Temple as a team sixteen carries, eleven yards, one fumble.
Indiana in four overtimes beat Akron twenty nine twenty seven.
West Virginia defeated Texas Tech twenty to thirteen, and Texas
Tech quarterback Tyler Schuck reportedly as a broken leg. Victories
for Kansas and Iowa State. Louisville rip Boston College fifty
(01:20:11):
six twenty eight, the BC team that just about took
FSU to overtime last week, Northwestern came back to win
an overtime against Minnesota thirty seven thirty four.
Speaker 2 (01:20:20):
By the way, Indiana twenty nine points and four overtimes,
their former quarterback, of course, Michael Pennix has fifty two points.
Speaker 1 (01:20:27):
Gosh, I forgot all about Penix being I killed caree.
Speaker 2 (01:20:31):
Oh it happened. It's a thing. Michael Pennick should be
your Heisman favorite as of right now. Coming up we
go back to the story of the night, South Bend, Indiana.
That's next. Fox Sports Trido. Welcome in everybody, Final hour
of the show. Fox Sports Radio, Eric Torris, Jason Martin.
(01:20:52):
We are broadcasting live from the tire rack dot Com
studios tyreck dot com. We'll help you get there and
on match selection, fast free shipping. The free road has
a protection in over ten thousand recommended installers. Tyreck dot com.
The way tire buying should be. Jason, I'll tell you
what you know. Well, I've been blabbing so much about
this Washington game. Yeah, we got ourselves a little, a little,
(01:21:17):
you know something bruin out in the desert. USC up
twenty four to twenty one on Arizona State with nine
minutes to go. Now it's early, nine minutes to go
in the third quarter, I should say to be very clear,
there's plenty of time, a lot going on, all that
good stuff. But the mighty USC Trojans, who everybody loved
(01:21:40):
after they beat Nevada and Stanford and whatever. They are
up by three with nine minutes to go against the
Arizona State Sun Devils.
Speaker 1 (01:21:48):
Yeah, they're in a fight. I mean, I anticipate they'll win.
I anticipate they'll pull away, but stranger things have happened.
It's late night. You mentioned it, and you're right. They
haven't seen anything in terms of competition zero And it's
not like this is top flight pack twelve, but it
is this the team in the conference that knows them well,
(01:22:09):
and they're gonna have to earn this one. I suspect
that they will, but it's a hostile environment, and we've
seen crazy things happen in this very stadium to that
very team, not to this very coach. Last guy I
think that lost on this field then got fired on
the tar.
Speaker 2 (01:22:27):
It's true. That is absolutely a one thousand percent through
Lane Kiffin. His final game as USC head coach. He
was ultimately fired on the tarmac after losing to Arizona
State in Tempe. So we'll keep you updated here. Twenty
four to twenty one to nine minutes to go, Washington,
all over Cal. By the way, we all know who
(01:22:47):
USC has next week, of course, the Colorado Buffaloes. That
will be our big noon game here on Fox. I
think everybody thought Colorado probably could and would take a
loss today. I don't think anybody thought that USC might
be coming in on a lose streak, so we'll keep
you updated on that one. And Jay, So we did
talk Colorado earlier, but I do want to get back
to what was ultimately, I believe, probably the story of
(01:23:07):
the day. I mean, Colorado was a twenty one point underdog.
So I don't want to sit here and say that
it was a shocker as they lost forty two to
six to Oregon. But you know, you talk about a game,
a game of the night, a game of the season.
So far, the Ohio State buck guys go to Notre
Dame and win. When I say in the final seconds
(01:23:31):
that isn't a metaphorical figure of speech. They got the
ball back with about a minute twenty five left, go
on a fifteen play drive sixty five yards. They convert
a third and nineteen at the Notre Dame twenty two
and they end up scoring with one second left on
a run play Jason, a thrilling finish. They end up
(01:23:54):
winning seventeen to fourteen. I'll tell you what, Loreno, why
don't you play what Ryan Day had to say after
the game.
Speaker 1 (01:24:00):
Yes, that's it.
Speaker 4 (01:24:01):
Physicality across the board, finishing off, having guts. Now, like
I like to know where Lou Holtz is right now,
what he said about our team, what he said about
our team. I cannot believe. This is a tough team
right here. We're proud to be from Ohio. And it's
always been Ohio against the world, and it'll continue to
be Ohio.
Speaker 8 (01:24:18):
Against the world.
Speaker 4 (01:24:18):
But I'll tell you what, I love those kids who got.
Speaker 2 (01:24:21):
A tough team. That was right day after the Notre
Dame win.
Speaker 1 (01:24:25):
I'm ready to.
Speaker 2 (01:24:26):
Go play for Ohio State. You know, I've been anti
Ryan Day for a while. My guy was firing up.
Ohio State gets the unbelievable win, unbelievable game, awesome game.
Ohio State gets the victory. Jason. They improved to four
and zero in what was obviously, by the sound of
Ryan Day's voice, a very emotional game.
Speaker 1 (01:24:47):
Yeah, it's a great game. Like I said off the
top of the show, you really got bookends of great
matchups because Florida State and Clemson. You want to talk
about how great Ohio State Notre Dame turned out to be,
we haven't even mentioned Florida State and Clemson. And it
was excellent, and it was early, and it went to overtime,
and there's a lot of storylines coming out of that
football game, and we haven't managed to get there at
(01:25:08):
all because Ohio State and Notre Dame tonight just played.
It was a war. It was yards were at a premium.
Points were certainly at a premium. It took every second
of the clock to determine the winner. Both teams played
extremely hard, extremely physically everything. I mean, they had to
(01:25:30):
earn it all night long. And I do think that
this is the kind of game, right They got emotional
about this because this is the kind of game that
I think he feels, like his critics think he doesn't
win games that are dogfights like this, games that when
the finesse doesn't get it done anymore and you actually
have to go and really beat somebody and physically stand
(01:25:54):
toe to toe with them and be the aggressor. I
think a lot of what he was saying defending his
kids was defending the reputation that maybe he has not
cared for that has been sort of pushed out there
over the last few years about him. Unfortunately for him.
I think it was accurate at the time, one accurate
tonight for the most part, But you could even see
(01:26:15):
instances in the first half where he was still kind
of showing that and in the third quarter when he
refused to do the quarterback sneak, like there are some
critiques to be had, but his football team's undefeated, and
that was a great and great that was just a
great sporting event. There was so much drama and that crowd,
that atmosphere was phenomenal.
Speaker 2 (01:26:33):
Absolutely by the way. He had even more in the
postgame press conference, he said, I don't know where he
gets off saying those types of things. I don't I
have some other things i'd like to say too, but
I'm not gonna say that because I'm more respectful than
he is. I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:26:51):
I mean, you realize he's just smack talking, right Ryan,
That's what I mean. He's a Notre Dame guy who
was playing red meat to that audience. Like I think
there was an audience, right, Like, yes, it was the
pending clip, it was past, yeah, so there was a
live audience. So he's playing to that. He's playing a
little villain role. I don't think that that version of
(01:27:11):
it is what he's going to say if he's actually
doing legit analysis. But nobody's doing legit analysis in that moment,
so he's of course waving the pompoms and being overwrought,
and Ryan Day taking it personally is kind of who cares? Man,
Just like, get over it. The fact that he's mentioned
it in pregame, on the field, in postgame on the field,
(01:27:35):
and in the press conference after the game tells you.
I bet you he cared about it way more than
any of the players did.
Speaker 2 (01:27:42):
Thousand obviously. Yeah, here is what lou Holtz had to say. Said,
we have the best offensive line in the country, obviously
talking about Notre Dame Sam Hartman won't even get his
jersey dirty all year. He has time to throw the
football the offensive line. That's not what he said. I'm
trying to find it. You look at coach Day. He
has lost to Alabama, Georgia, Clemson in mission twice and
everybody beats him because they're more physical than Ohio State.
(01:28:04):
So that was essentially what he said. Yeah, I listen,
I think this kind of speaks Listen, I'm not trying
to tear down Ohio State after a great win here.
I think that kind of speaks to like kind of
what we've said about Ohio State, Like lou Holtz called
him soft, Ryan Day talking about a coach. What a
coach said that's been retired for twenty five years, who's
(01:28:25):
eighty six years old? Like the fact that you heard
that outside noise, the fact that you care what somebody
that eighty six years old had to say. Now, by
the way, maybe this is one of those like you know, Dion,
like you know, finding something to be upset about, you know,
Like like I thought some of the stuff, like a
few weeks ago with Matt Ruhle, I thought it felt
(01:28:47):
like they were just trying to find motivation, which is fine,
there's nothing wrong with it. Like I, like you said,
I don't think that Ohio State Like I wonder how
many Ohio State players even know who Lou Holtz is, Like.
Speaker 1 (01:28:58):
Right, I mean that I think there's that, But there's
also this, Like, with all due respect to the show
that that lou hole said this on, I didn't even
know about this until Ryan Day mentioned it and I
went and looked it up. Like if he doesn't mention it,
I don't know that anybody cares. And if Ryan Day's
team comes out and wins, which they would have either way, right,
I mean, like you can go behind closed doors and
(01:29:19):
tell your kids whatever you want to tell them to
build them up and say, hey, this dude was a
legend of Notre Dame a lot of you. You know,
it happened before your time, but he was talking about
your toughness. But what you don't do, in my opinion,
is then make that public three times before, after and
in the press conference. Just talk about the fact that
(01:29:39):
you won the game. Be the coach. I mean, is
Lou Hole's going to be talking now? Probably not, because
you beat him. There's not really any reason to then
go forward on it because he shouldn't be your story.
There shouldn't be a part of the storyline where you're at,
where you are speaking to someone who criticized. Just go
win the game, which you did. Go take your undefeated
(01:30:01):
record and play next week. Like lou Holtz talked, and
no one knew about it, No one cared largely, like
I said, I didn't know about it. Maybe a lot
of people did, but to me that that was an
unnecessary reaction. Three times. I understand that he was emotional,
and I understand that he took it personally because it's
going to his brand of I don't want to use
(01:30:24):
the word. I don't want to use that word, but
just non aggressiveness that we have. I think we've come
to co Ohio State display at times where they have
not shown a killer instinct, and so he was using that.
And again I do think he was he was playing
to the audience and having some fun with it. But
I will say when we when we actually listen to
(01:30:46):
what he said or you read the words and he
mentions coach Day and how he loses because they're more aggressive.
I mean, you know, methinks thou doth protests too much
when it comes to Bryan Day because he knows that's
the general knock on him at this stage in his
career is that you can beat him if you can
out physical his football team, because that's what's been seen.
(01:31:08):
Like he's saying, didn't he say earlier that he's like
we played one bad half in a couple of years.
It's like that's not true, Like that's just not accurate.
Speaker 2 (01:31:17):
No, he said something like that as well. That wasn't
in the sound that we played, but he did say
something about, you know, everyone's freaking out because we played
one bad half. No, you got smoked by Michigan at
the very least in the second half last year got
smoked by him in the second half the year before,
you know, last year in the playoff they lose, Marvin
Harrison gets hurt, but like they weren't great in the
second half either. What do you think about Ohio State
(01:31:40):
in the big picture, because you know, I think with
Ohio State in the big picture, I think you could
look at it from one of two ways. Is that
one we talked about it earlier and by the way,
if anybody missed it, make sure to go back and
download the podcast. After the show, we talked about the
fact that Ohio State, you know, this team just might
be different. Is the defense was excellent all night. You know,
(01:32:02):
Trayvon Henderson the running back, had over one hundred yards rushing.
Two really good wide receivers. You know, Marvin Harrison wasn't
even the leading receiver this this evening. A mecha BUCA
who actually you know, mel Kiper has projected as a
first round pick as well. Shows you how deep that
wide receiver room is. I just bring it up because
on the one hand, this just might be a different
(01:32:22):
kind of Ohio State team. But two, I do wonder,
you know, in the bigger picture, this might be the
year I mean, you look across college football. You know,
Florida State has two great wins. We haven't even talked
about them, by the way, but Florida State has two
great wins. Jordan Travis at quarterback, quinn Ewers has been
awesome this year, Michael Pennix at Washington, bow Nix at Oregon.
(01:32:44):
To beat some of these great teams, you might need
great quarterback plays. So maybe it's way too early to
look too too much into the future, but I think
you could look at it as a positive from the
Ohio State perspective of, Hey, maybe they don't have that elite, elite,
upper level quarterback, but maybe everywhere else is so good
that they don't need him. But then in the bigger picture,
maybe some of it is you might need that guy
(01:33:05):
in a year where quarterbacks have been the story.
Speaker 1 (01:33:07):
Of the sport so far. Yeah, I mean, I think
that's true. I also think that we are coming to
a place where, at least this year, I'm not sure
what to make of a lot of these teams yet.
And like, I don't even know how good Georgia is
quite yet because they hadn't played anybody.
Speaker 2 (01:33:24):
How about Michigan, They have Michigan is another example of it.
Speaker 1 (01:33:27):
I mean, I was gonna at some point prior to
the show today, I was thinking, well, it just feels
like Georgia and Michigan then there's everybody else. But that's
not really it, Like I think there's just there's just
a big conglomeration to teams. I've still got Georgia winning
at all, and I've got them beating Michigan. I had
that before the year, but I just kind of look
at it. It's just it feels a little bit more
wide open to me because there are reasons to like
(01:33:51):
and then not to like virtually everybody, Like, is Texas
third best in the country, I don't know, Florida State
USC there's flaw was there? Florida State easily could have
lost today. You know, Notre Dame was a top ten
team coming in and they could have won. Ohio State's undefeated.
Are they that much better than Notre Dame? Are they
better than Washington? Are they betteran I don't know, Like
(01:34:12):
it just doesn't feel Usually by this point I have
a pretty good sense of who I think is really
really good, and it just and maybe this is just
I haven't noticed as much in years past, but it
just doesn't feel like we have much of a resume
on a lot of these teams with which to bank
how good they actually are. You talked about yours, for example, Well,
(01:34:34):
the Alabama team they beat, we now know for sure,
is just not really all that good. That doesn't mean
that win doesn't matter. It does mean that we can't
overvalue it and act like they beat a national champion
level Alabama team because they didn't totally fair.
Speaker 2 (01:34:50):
Yeah. No, I think the teams at the top, like
I feel like, have looked I don't you know. I mean, listen,
Georgia and Michigan have both been good so far, so
it's hard to say that they haven't looked dominant. But no,
I'm with you, and I don't know if like, I
don't know who I would vote number one today if
I had an AP vote, which I don't. By the way,
(01:35:10):
USC has kicked a field goal. They're up twenty seven
to twenty one. Now they are driving again as well, Like,
if I had an AP vote, I don't know who
I would put number one, Like it feels like a
prisoner of the moment thing. The night Texas beats Alabama,
you probably have them number one. The week before you
have Florida State. I think with the way that Oregon
is dominated, and you can make the case for them,
but I don't know that there's a great team, and
(01:35:31):
so it'll be interesting to see and it'll be fascinating
because I don't think there's that dominant Alabama team. I
don't think Ohio State is definitively the best team in
the Big Ten, even though they took care of business today.
Washington and Oregon both look good in the Pac twelve.
So it is an interesting year and we will have
to wait and see because there's still a lot of
football left. But I agree there is you know, doesn't
(01:35:54):
feel like there's one or two teams running away from
the rest of this sport. By the way, football fans,

we are one game in two Week three of the
NFL season. We talked earlier today about the San Francisco
(01:37:07):
win over the New York Football Giants. Jason, I wanted
to go through some of these big Week three games
a little bit of a lighter slate, but I think
there's some interesting storylines this weekend, and I want to
start a little place called Minneapolis, Minnesota. This game to
me is interesting, right, So Los Angeles Chargers oh and
(01:37:27):
two travel to the Minnesota Vikings, who are also oh
and two. Listen, I'll say this is that you know
the stats on starting oh and two, oh and three
and making the playoffs like that. Stuff's obviously changed with
the extra wildcard spot, But who, like, just point blank,
I think I know the answer, But who do you
(01:37:48):
think needs to win more?
Speaker 1 (01:37:49):
On Sunday between the Chargers and the Vikings, Man, I mean, yes, yeah, yeah,
I mean it's really it's real. It's the Chargers for me.
But maybe that's because I was biased to that degree
before the season, because I've been so adamant that the
Staway decision was the wrong one and that this was
(01:38:10):
going to prove out not to work, and so far
it hasn't. I mean, a couple of bad choices against Tennessee.
You find a way to lose that game after losing
because you you know you're look, Brandon stee is a
defensive coordinator. That's how he gets the job. He's a
defensive coordinator with the Rams. He ends up moving over
and the defense has been not good under his tenure,
(01:38:31):
virtually at all. They've paid money to J. C. Jackson.
He comes in, they have to take him off the
field on crucial downs. It just isn't working out very well.
Minnesota gets rid of Dalvin Cook and then Madison has
a bad game. They have some things there. Now they've
brought in a new back, and you know, I don't
know that he plays. I don't think he is going
to play actually this week, but he will probably be
(01:38:52):
in the lineup next week. I would say it is
the Chargers, but I was down on Minnesota entering the
year just because I didn't buy into what they did
last year. The Chargers didn't do much last year, so
I kind of think it's more of them because I
think their coach can't survive much more of this.
Speaker 2 (01:39:08):
So I was gonna ask you. I heard John Middlekoff,
you know, former NFL scout does great work in the media.
Now he made the argument, if Brandon stalely loses this game.
I don't want to speak for John. I don't know
if he said he could be fired or he should
be fired. Do you think there's any way with the
way that we know that the Chargers operate. Now, now,
let me play devil's advocate. I could play both sides here, right. So,
(01:39:30):
on the one hand, the Chargers, notoriously, especially with coaches,
kind of sort of cheap. Okay, obviously, you know took
the cheap route with Brandon Staley last year. Sean Payton
was available. There was rumors that he wanted that job,
so I could see the scenario where they kind of
just give him more time, even though I think we
all kind of know he's not the guy the counter
would be. Though Jason Kellen Moore, as of like eighteen
(01:39:54):
months ago, was considered to be a hot head coaching candidate. Sure,
he's now the offensive coordinator, and you could potentially give
him a little bit of a job interview on the job,
But I guess, I guess the core question I'm asking
do you believe, in any way, shape or form, that
the Chargers, if they were to lose this game, to
fall to oh and three, would actually have the guts
(01:40:14):
to pull the trigger on Brandon Staley come Monday.
Speaker 1 (01:40:17):
No, I don't. I don't think that you make that
choice and then three weeks in you say we screwed
that one up. I think you go a little bit
longer than this. I don't know that you're salvaging the
season if you go oh and three. I guess I
mean you have seen a couple of other AFC teams
that you expected more from quite frankly, not do anything
much yet, So maybe you're not completely out of it.
(01:40:39):
But I think at the very least you probably go
round mid season and if it's a total disaster, you
let it go. But I would be shocked if they
made the move this fast.
Speaker 2 (01:40:49):
Yeah, I kind of agree. By the way, now, let
me play it the other side of it. If the
Vikings were to lose this game, you fall to oh
and three. Now, granted, the division still feels very much
up for grabs. Both Detroit and Green Bay already have
one loss. I saw our colleague on Sundays, Kyle Rudolph,
former Minnesota Viking, say that he thinks they should consider
trading Kirk Cousins. I think the thought would be maybe
(01:41:13):
the Jets. The Jets obviously, I don't think anybody thinks
Zach Wilson is going to be starting the next fifteen
weeks for them. Do you think, and we talked about earlier,
all the great quarterbacks that could potentially be in this draft,
do you think the Vikings, if they fall to zero
and three, should consider kind of blowing this thing up
and starting to prepare for next year.
Speaker 1 (01:41:33):
I mean, do I think Kirk Cousins is the biggest
issue with that team?
Speaker 3 (01:41:36):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:41:36):
But do I think he is right in that mixture
of the quarterbacks that you don't want because he just
teases you enough to keep you away from the replacement
that you might actually need to take that next step. Yes,
and Rudolph is it's interesting that it's Rudolph saying it
because Rudolph has firsthand knowledge of it, and for him
to say it, he's almost he's almost basically saying, Yeah,
(01:41:58):
you know, we've been here and done this for a
long time. Can we finally cut the court on this
and try a different way? And there will be suitors
out there that would want Kirk Cousins because he's better
than what they have. And even though that's not the
way I'd want to run a franchise, that's the way
a lot of franchises are run. Yeah, let me, I
think that would happen. It happened after week three. No,
but I could see that and Staway both being things
(01:42:20):
we're talking about a month from now.
Speaker 2 (01:42:22):
Yeah. No, I agree, And that's why I think it's
an interesting game. Because you fall to zero to three,
you do have to have those tough you do have
to have those tough questions. As far as as far
as the quarterback positions concerned, I'm trying to find Kyle
Rudolph's quotes. He said, Kirk Cousins brought was brought to
Minnesota to get them over the hump to win a
super Bowl coming off the NFC Championship game loss. That
(01:42:43):
is true. The quarterback was supposed to be the missing
piece that put the super talented roster over the top
to win a championship. We're at the spot from an
organizational standpoint, where where are you going? Why haven't you
extended him? Kyle Rudolph said that last week with our
buddy Mark Willards. So, like you said, I don't think
either of those moves gets made necessarily after this week,
(01:43:04):
but I think both of them have to be considered
if you go zero to three and certainly going forward.
Tell you what, Jason, there's a lot of other games
that I do want to get to. We'll come back.
We'll preview all the other big storylines this weekend. But
before we do, though, final time, let's toss it over
the news desk. We can't always say there's stuff trending
(01:43:26):
at one thirty one Eastern time, but there absolutely is
right about to Saga and Tempe.
Speaker 8 (01:43:31):
Early fourth quarter on Fox TV, Number five ranked USC
is only leading twenty seven twenty one at Arizona State,
Heisman winning quarterback Kayleb Williams has one touchdown pass and
two TV runs. Meanwhile, about ten minutes left in the
game at a thranked Washington Huskies now fifty two to
twenty five over Cal Washington quarterback Michael Pennix in three
(01:43:53):
quarters at over three hundred yards, passing four touchdowns, one interception,
minute to goo until Fresno State becomes four on the season.
At Fresno home team leads Kent State fifty three to ten.
The late games at halftime at Hawaii, New Mexico State
leading the visitors up seventeen to three. We had Ohio
State winning at Notre Dame seventeen fourteen. Of course that
(01:44:14):
was on NBC, the Notre Dame Broadcasting Company, but they've
expanded to Big ten now and the athletic pointing out
for three hundred and fifty million dollars a year. So
far this season, NBC has gotten Charlotte Versus, Maryland got Syracuse,
Purdue got Maryland, Michigan State, which was thirty one to
nine for the Terps. Next week they've got Michigan State,
(01:44:37):
Iowa farmers.
Speaker 1 (01:44:39):
Wow, a missioner stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:44:42):
Kevin Warren. I could not believe, Like I couldn't believe,
but I was like, they got the third game for
the Big ten. By the way, poor PAC twelve, they
could have saved some of that money just given it
to the PAC twelve. They actually have a good product.
But I guess they got the tea if they wanted.
Speaker 1 (01:44:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:44:55):
Well, it also takes two sides to get an agreement,
and we all know where the PAC twelve was on
that in the last couple of year. In the I'll
say it again, PAC two Championship game, Washington State beat
Oregon State thirty eight to thirty five. Utah beat UCLA
fourteen to seven. You'd scored on a pick six on
the first play from scrimmage. Today, Tenth ranked Oregon was
up on Colorado forty two to nothing early second half
(01:45:18):
forty two to six. The final Tonight, Number twelve LSU
beat Arkansas thirty four to thirty one on a short
field goal in the final seconds Shadon Taniels with four
touchdown passes. LSU had trailed thirteen three just before halftime.
Thirteenth ranked Alabama at home was trailing Old Miss at
the half seven to six. Bama won the game twenty
four to ten victories on the road for Oklahoma, North
(01:45:40):
Carolina for Duke, and Miami. Home wins for Tennessee and Florida,
Indiana in four overtimes beat Akron. Northwestern came back for
an overtime victory against Minnesota. Arizona won twenty one twenty
at Stanford. West Virginia down Texas Tech twenty to thirteen.
Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shuck suffered a broken leg. Now
(01:46:00):
of the top ten victories for Georgia and Michigan for
Texas and Penn State, and number four Florida State won
its game at Clemson in overtime thirty one to twenty four.
Fasu scored a key touchdown late third quarter on a
fumble return, and Clemson, with under two minutes left in
the fourth quarter, missed a twenty nine yard field goal
attempt and eventually the l for the home team in overtime.
(01:46:24):
Number six Ohio State a winner at number nine Notre
Dames seventeen to fourteen on a one yard td with
one second left. The Buckeyes had blown a ten to
nothing lead, but still came out with a w as
Notre Dames defense had only ten players on the field
for the last two plays. And before we leave college football,
there was with the Colorado game, of course, a lot
(01:46:44):
of lopsided stats to throw. You had a good one
that Oregon had more touchdowns than Colorado had first downs
in the first half. Actually, it was thirty five points
allowed and Colorado only had twenty one yards in the
first half. Said I wonder in recent years of college
football has that happened to any other ranked team? The
(01:47:06):
answer is always reliable. The Iowahwke Eyes ten years ago
had a first half where they allowed twenty points and
they had only seventeen yards ouch. Dolphins wide receiver Jalen
Waddle is out tomorrow with a concussion. The Saints place
running back Jamal Williams on ir Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow
(01:47:26):
with the sore calf, questionable for Monday night. Eagles wide
receiver DeVante Smith practice fully so he should play Monday,
and Tampa Bay linebacker Devin White is also due to play.
In baseball, the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw beat the Giants
seven nothing. The Dodgers offentially officially clinch a first round
by the Padres had one eighth straight, but they lost
at home in eleven innings tonight, five two to Saint
(01:47:47):
Louis in the al Wes. The Texas Rangers are now
game and a half over Houston and two up on Seattle.
Texas shut out Seattle to nothing. Well, Houston lost at
home to the on rushing Kansas City Royals three to two.
You know, earlier this week the Royals had a record
of forty eight and one oh two, and now they've
(01:48:07):
won five games in a row. The guy that was
the winning pitcher for him tonight, Jordan Lyles, had been
four and seventeen this year and won at Houston. And
then we had the comeback in the history of the
Pittsburgh Pirates, which goes back to the eighteen hundreds. They
were down nine to nothing after three innings and still
won at Cincinnati thirteen to twelve. A crusher for the Reds,
(01:48:27):
which just over a week left in the regular season.
Here the Cubs in Miami each one. Cubs lead for
the final wildcard spot in the NL by one game
over Miami, now two and a half up on the Reds.
Victories for Baltimore and Tampa Bay updating USC leads at
Arizona State twenty seven twenty one, eleven and a half
minutes to go, and it's looking like they stripped the
(01:48:47):
quarterback on a sack fumble. Trojans recover. Just while we've
been speaking, the Huskies have scored again, Washington fifty nine
to twenty five over col mid fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (01:48:59):
Back to you, thank you very much, to Sega, to Sega,
have a great evening. By the way, were you on
air when Kyle Rudolph was just dropping Minnesota Vikings nuggets
last week?
Speaker 8 (01:49:09):
I was here last week. He's he's doing the show
from Minnesota. I think, so you got Mark Willard is
really excited for the season and the new show, the
new co host on Sunday nights. There's this half second
delay before he responds to sentences, so Mark's all excited.
Speaker 2 (01:49:26):
Great way, it was a great day in the NFL.
Speaker 8 (01:49:28):
Kyle, how you doing complete dead air?
Speaker 1 (01:49:31):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:49:31):
Doing fine? Bys A.
Speaker 8 (01:49:34):
Hopefully that gets settled, because I mean, we have guys
sometimes do shows from out of state and they don't
have that kind of delay. It was almost like he
had to think, was it a good day? Am I
feeling okay? It wasn't, but hopefully that gets rectified. That's
only been on two Sundays here as the season has started.
So tomorrow eight pm Eastern.
Speaker 2 (01:49:53):
Time was already making national headlines because I did see
did some It was just prepping for the show, and
I saw his comment on Kirk Cousins, and you know,
obviously there's no one better to speak on Kirk Cousins
and the Vikings than Kyle Rudolph. You can hear Kyle
Rudolph with Mark Willard what five pm Pacific eight Eastern
tomorrow to Saga will be back with them and then
(01:50:14):
Chris plankhosts and you know whatever somebody I ca yeah,
I can't remember. Oh it's Ernie Spanner, Okay, Ernie Spanners
Arizona Wildcats held on for dear life against an awful
Stanford team today. By the way, Arnie Spanners Arizona Wildcats
play Washington next week, so oh hello, that'll be on
during our show. But I'm good, all right to Saga.
Thank you very much, my friend. Have a great evening, Jason.
(01:50:34):
Let's just really quickly get to a couple more of
these games, and by the way, we have time after
the break to do it. As well. Let's go to
I'll tell you what, Jason, give me your Denver Bronco spiel.
They're going to Miami. Miami's obviously looked awesome coming off
the Sunday Night football win. They're two and zero your
Denver Broncos owing to the miracle Hail Mary, only to
(01:50:57):
not fai not convert the two point convert? Where are
you at on your Broncos? Go ahead? I know you
want to talk about them.
Speaker 1 (01:51:03):
They're better than they were last year, and they're still
not very good, and Russell Wilson shows flashes, but nothing
that would indicate that the guy that you were used
to seeing is the guy that's still there. I think
Sean Payton knows that as well as anybody else does.
Feels like a one and done scenario where you know,
I don't think he takes a job if he isn't
(01:51:24):
told that they can move on from Russ at the
end of the season if it doesn't work. They've dealt
with some injury, so that's a problem that no Waddle
for Miami is an issue certainly for them, But I
just I feel like at this stage Denver is not
the kind of football team I would pick to go
on the road to beat the Miami Dolphins team. So
that's that's kind of where we stand right now. Oh
(01:51:46):
and two, that's probably likely. Oh and three, they certainly
look better coached and more discipline than they were last year.
But you know that's not a high bar to clear,
so there's still work to be done for Sean Payton.
Speaker 2 (01:51:57):
Quick update from the college game. USC has scored a
touchdown and converted a two point conversion, so they are
now up thirty five to twenty one. Jason one more
kind of interdivisional AFC West game. Sunday night game. The
Raiders host the Steelers, and I just don't think the
Steelers are very good. I mean, I've done Mike Kenny
(01:52:20):
Pickett Spiel. I think he's largely overrated because he's a Steeler,
because he was the only quarterback taken in the first round,
so we had a lot of eyeballs on him last year.
And I think the other thing is he plays a
lot in the preseason, and so he's the one starter
that plays a lot. We analyze them, we overanalyze them.
I know the Steelers were able to hold on to
beat the Cleveland Browns last week, but you know you
(01:52:42):
look at it, two hundred and fifty five yards of
total offense. The run game is nonexistent. I don't think
this team is very good. I don't think the Raiders
are very good. But they're at home. They obviously took
care of as we just mentioned the York Denver Broncos
a few days ago. This will be the Raiders home opener.
I think the Raiders get the win here, Jason, I
(01:53:02):
really do.
Speaker 1 (01:53:03):
They might. I mean, it's not likely to be a shootout.
Let's just say that this game could probably be won
at about twenty points. I wouldn't be surprised. But because
it's in Vegas, I feel like DeVante Adams could be
your difference if nothing else. I tend to agree with
you on this. I just I like Kenny Pickett fine,
(01:53:25):
but that's that's kind of where I am with him.
He's just he's just a guy. At this stage, there's
gonna take more and they're still banged up. They're hurting
as well. They've had some crucial losses as a matter
of fact, So I kind of like the Raiders too.
Speaker 2 (01:53:38):
Tell you what, Jason will come back. We will rap
with the rest of the week three NFL slate. That's
all Next Fox Sports, are.
Speaker 1 (01:53:47):
You play action? Klubnik Blitz call me Clubnick Trill.
Speaker 2 (01:53:56):
The ball is.
Speaker 1 (01:53:57):
Loose, hits a fumball.
Speaker 2 (01:53:58):
It's picked up of the dolls. Loach the other way
forty thirty foresidel.
Speaker 1 (01:54:03):
Like the loach.
Speaker 2 (01:54:04):
He's got a convoy.
Speaker 9 (01:54:05):
Trot it there, baby, flip the scrip.
Speaker 2 (01:54:11):
That is your Progressive Playday, brought to you by Progressive Insurance.
Progressive makes bundling easy and affordable. Get a multi policy

Progressive dot Com. That was a good friend of mine. Actually,
Jeff Colehyne. We've had him on many times various shows
that I've hosted.
Speaker 1 (01:54:32):
Here.
Speaker 2 (01:54:32):
He is the play by play voice of the Florida
State Seminoles. Florida State Jason, we didn't even get a
chance to talk about this game. They rally to win,
and you really you called this early in the day,
you said, we gotta get this sound into the show
because Clemson was up twenty four to seventeen. Late in
the third quarter. They were driving and as we just
(01:54:54):
saw as we just heard a scoop and score from
Florida State ties up the game. They end up win
in overtime. Clemson had all the momentum. They don't we
don't know this, but I think they would have won
if that play does not happen. Instead, Florida State survives,
they advanced. They're now four to zero Clemson zero to
two in acc play.
Speaker 1 (01:55:15):
Jason, Yeah, I mean, it was just a huge turning
point moment because they had just stopped Florida State. That
was a hard fought game too, and it was going
back and forth and it was kind of hard to
see who had the momentum at different times, but at
this point it was clearly Clemson. And when they got
the ball and they were driving, they had just had
a couple of first downs, looked like they were on
(01:55:35):
the verge of scoring. You go up thirty one seventeen
in a game like that, you feel pretty good about
your chances going into the final quarter and man club
Nick got rocked, lost the ball and it ends up
in the end zone, ends up tied, and those turn
out to be the last points Clempson scores at all
after that ties it, and then the only other points
are in overtime and they are Florida State points and
(01:55:57):
you see how that goes. There were two obvious game
changing play today, one being the final play certainly in
South Bend and that play and those were also coincidentally
the two best games of the day.
Speaker 2 (01:56:09):
They were yes, so we yeah. So Clemson does end
up losing, Florida State wins, and as Jason just said,
Ohio State holds on on the final play from scrimmage
of the game for the buck guys, they score with
one second left on the clock. Jas, let's wrap the
show just you know, rip through some of these NFL
(01:56:29):
games that we have not gotten to. It is a
busy Week four slate or Week three slate. Excuse me
as always, we're wrapping up Week four in college football.
By the way, should mention the game in the Desert
far from over. Arizona State has just scored USC up
thirty five to twenty eight. In that one, USC up
(01:56:49):
thirty five to twenty eight, eight minutes to go. That
one is far from over. As us trying to avoid
the upset, we will keep you updated on that for
the next nine minutes and then Bernie Fredda will be
following us let's keep it going, Jason. We've talked about
a bunch of these games, you know, one we didn't
get to, and I don't think there's much doubt over
who is gonna win, but Chicago at Kansas City. Kansas
(01:57:11):
City with a nice bounce back win over the Jacksonville
Jaguars last week. Chicago Bears not so much. They obviously
lost to Jordan Love and the Packers in week one,
then to Baker Mayfield and the Bucks in week two.
Justin Fields, we saw the back and forth with the
coaching staff. First it sounded like he was criticizing him,
then it sounded like he wasn't. Is Justin Fields like,
(01:57:34):
is he unsalvagable at this point for the Bears.
Speaker 1 (01:57:37):
I don't know about unsalvagable, but we're getting into that
territory where maybe this is who this guy is. And
I don't mean from a mental standpoint that, you know,
anybody can say something that they regret or it comes
out the wrong way or it's out of context or whatever.
I think it's just more of the place, so inconsistent,
and I think they may have broken him before they
actually got a little bit of talent around him. And
that's why I said a few years ago, I felt
(01:57:58):
sorry for him because after watching what they did not
do for him last season in the draft or and
free agency, they gave him nothing to work with at all.
They they may have just kind of stunted his growth
to some degree. And now they've got DJ Moore and
they have a little bit around him. But I think
he's just kind of been in a funk and it's
hard to get out of that, and that might be
(01:58:20):
the problem. It may be the kind of thing that
a change of scener he can fix, but that that
organization was so broken when they drafted him and then
they made every bad decision you could possibly make after
that point that he's gonna have to go somewhere else
to resurrect his career.
Speaker 2 (01:58:34):
By the way, Jason, the division that we all agreed
was quote unquote by far the worst in the league.
The NFC South has three two and oh teams. The
Atlanta Falcons are taking on tomorrow, they will face the
They will be at Detroit to face the Lions. The
Tampa Bay Bucks, as I just mentioned, are playing on
(01:58:54):
Monday Night Football, and then, oh, by the way, the
New Orleans Saints at two and oh are playing tomorrow
at Green Bay. Who do you think is the best
team in that division?
Speaker 1 (01:59:03):
Jays, I think Atlanta is. Oh. Personally, I don't think.
I don't think the Saints are great. I don't buy
into Tampa Bay at all. Good for them for what
they've done to start the year, but I think that's
smoking mirrors obviously, Carolina deal with Bryce Young's injury and
just him being a rookie and the growing pains of
that we're seeing sort of the outpouring. But I think
(01:59:26):
Atlanta is a good football so I think. But John
Robinson has already proven to be somebody you can't take
your eyes off of when he's on the field. I
don't know about Ritter long term, but I really like
Arthur Smith. I've of course got to watch a lot
of his act when he was here in Nashville with
the Titans. He's just a great mind, very very fundamentally
sound understands offense. I like their concepts. I like the
(01:59:47):
way they're building down there. I think Atlanta might be
the most solid team in the division.
Speaker 2 (01:59:52):
The Sager mentioned earlier some bad weather rolling through Washington.
They're a six point favorite against the Bills. I think
Washington might just be decent, not great, but decent. You know,
remember Eric b Enemy is now calling the offense ron
rivera handling the defense. They took care of your Broncos
last week. I think they might be good. I'm calling
for the outright upset commanders beat the Bills tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (02:00:13):
Jason. I won't go there. The rain will make it
interesting if indeed that's it. I agree with you, though
I'm not surprised by this, but I think they're pretty good.
They're not bad, They're not great, but they're pretty good.
I think Buffalo will beat them though.
Speaker 2 (02:00:26):
We got got you want to thank the crew, Loraina
on the board producer pat Steve de Sager from a partner,
Jason Martin, I'm Aren Torres. Make sure you go down
to download the podcast shortly after the show. Coming up next,
Bernie Fratto of The Bernie Fratto Show. This is Fox Sports.
