(00:25):
the way tire buying should be. As Martin and VJ
just told you, we officially have a situation in Detroit.
The Lions are driving, but currently trail forty five to
twenty eight five forty to go. Disastrous game for the Lions.
Legend growing in Jaden Daniels. Even if they score here,
(00:49):
j Martin, if my math is correct, it's still going
to be a two score game with five minutes to go. Unbelievable. Unbelievable,
jaymar unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
So there was this weird play early in this game
where they brought in Marcus Mariota on a fourth and one.
Jane Daniels was also in the game. They brought in
Mariota and put him underneath center, moved him in right
at the last second, and then he and Brian Robinson
had a bad exchange and the Lions took over and
then went down its cord, and I was thinking to myself,
(01:20):
oh man, we might have a blowout here, because it
doesn't look like they can stop Jamir Gibbs. And that's
the kind of mistake that a team that's not really
used to being in this kind of a spot does,
and then when it goes wrong, they usually crumble. And
since that point, the Washington Commanders have not made a mistake,
and the Lions have made multiple mistakes, throwing the football
(01:43):
to guys wearing the opposite jerseys, putting it on the ground,
getting too cute with some of their offensive calls. This
hasn't been one of Ben Johnson's best nights, and the
injury attrition for the Lions, especially on the defensive side
of the football, has just put them in a bad spot.
But make no mistake, no one is going to care
(02:06):
about that after this game. This is a gigantic, gigantic
fail if you're a Lions fan, like the stuff that
you're seeing from them when they're showing them in the stands,
they look like they've looked for the better part of
the last four decades. When you actually watch this and
Jaden Daniels just looks like he has made for this
(02:28):
moment in a way that well, if he wins this game,
he becomes only the second rookie quarterback to win two
playoff games in this rookie season. The other one was
Ben Roethlisberger. That's the list. It becomes Benn Roethlisberger and
Jaden Daniels and that's it. And let me tell you something.
Jaden Daniels against either Jalen Hurts or that Matthew Stafford
(02:50):
Rams team, they could go to the super Bowl. It
is possible based on the way this offense is playing
right now, that this is a team that would make
it to a super Bowl. It's not like they haven't
seen the Philadelphia Eagles this season twice already. So this
is stunning, quite frankly, that this Lions team has just
(03:11):
been manhandled like this for a number of different reasons.
But they have just looked undisciplined. Not that they weren't ready,
but I'm not sure they were expecting the Commanders to
come in and do this to them in their house.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
So a lot of different angles that we can start on.
I mean, I don't even know where to start. First
of all, I should start with the fact that the
Lions did elect to kick a field goal, cuts the
lead to fourteen. There's a little over five minutes to go,
so it is in fact a two possession game. Lions
do still have all three timeouts, but they haven't really
stopped Jaydon Daniels all night, maybe since the first first
(03:48):
series or two of the game. By the way, the
Commanders were twenty eight second quarter points, the highest scoring
second quarter I believe in NFL history, but certainly in
playoff history. They shared both stats during the halftime show,
so I'm not sure exactly which one is accurate, or
if both are accurate. But it is currently forty five
thirty one, five oh one left. It looks like Washington
(04:10):
is preparing for an on side kick. It looks like
what Detroit will kick the on side kick? We can't
do play by play here. Washington has recovered, so this
is the I mean, Jason, I think that that play
is a perfect metaphor for the entire night. I know
there are thousands of you all over the country driving around.
(04:30):
You're not watching this game live, but Detroit trailing by
fourteen points. For those of you just joining us, forty
five thirty one, about five minutes to go, Detroit did
just kick a field goal line up for an on
side kick, and it was actually a great kick, bounces
over one guy's head, two or three lines touch it,
and it ends up being recovered by the Commanders. I
just think that's a metaphor for the entire night, is
(04:52):
that things are just going wrong at the worst possible time. Listen,
and this sounds like I'm gonna be taking away from
the Commanders. It's not, but it does just feel like
their night. Every time they need to pick up a
big yard on fourth down, they do a couple really
boneheaded mistakes by Detroit, including you know, I think Ben
Johnson trying to show just how deep his bag is.
(05:12):
Jamison Williams pick at the worst possible time. Yes, Jamison
Williams was dropping back to pass down two scores. But
I just think that that that that that onside kick
is a metaphor for tonight, Jason. It just feels like
nothing is going right, and it just feels like it's
Washington's night, And that makes it sound negative that Washington
(05:33):
somehow doesn't know that they're clearly the better team. They
are clearly more deserving, but I'm just trying to make
the point of it just does not really feel like
Washington's night tonight.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
It definitely feels like washing tonight. I'm still stunned. Like
Jamiir Gibbs, they haven't been able to stop all night long.
He has fourteen carries in this game for one hundred
and five yards. He's averaging seven and a hot half
every time he totes it. He's got two touchdowns in
the game. He's five catches for sixty one yards in
this game. This thing did not have to go this way.
(06:06):
I don't know why Ben Johnson and the offense decided
that they were going to throw it as often as
they've thrown it, especially being kind of ineffective and Golf
maybe having his best night. Yeah, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
You know what, it really reminds me of remember last
year Baltimore. Oh my goodness, you r where you're.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Going because you've you've said it before. I mean, we've
talked about it so many times that it is. It's
like it's getting away from the thing that you do.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Yes, and when the reference I was going to make
for people who didn't pick up on that right away,
as jam Martis said, I have said it many times.
Ja mart and I have talked about this game many
times last year's AFC Championship game, and the parallel to
me is Baltimore falls down early, and I don't have
the box score in front of me. I don't know
if it was, you know, seven nothing, fourteen to three,
whatever it was, and they just completely got away from it,
(06:55):
and they basically felt like it felt like they felt
like they had to be in a two minute offense
the rest of the game. And I will say where
I think the parallel works as well, is it felt
like they were more afraid this is the Ravens of
the threat of Patrick Mahomes, and they actually were of
Patrick Mahomes. And that's where I feel like the Lions
were tonight. Was I get that they didn't feel that
(07:16):
they felt like, Okay, we're playing a special quarterback in
Jayden Daniels who's having a special night, a historic night.
But it just felt like they completely went away from
who they were. And then I did cutch you off,
James Martz, I want you to continue. But as you said,
Jamir Gibbs was gashing them every single time he touched
the ball. I understand now with four minutes to go
down fourteen points. Even if you get the ball back,
(07:36):
that's a different conversation. But I just felt like they
went into panic mode way too early, I guess is
the point I'm trying to make.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Yeah, I mean again, they had no answer for him,
and I still don't think that they have an answer
for him. He is perfect for their offense against this
Washington defense, and it helps you control the clock and
keep the robot on the sidelines, keep that freak show
on the side lines in Jayden Daniels, and that is
(08:03):
becoming a thing. The other thing that is becoming a
thing watching this is I happened to see a comment
from someone that basically suggested, are we watching Ryan Leaf
Peyton Manning Volume two. I don't think we are to
that point yet, but you are certainly seeing that Jaden
(08:24):
Daniels is more ready right now for this moment than
Caleb Williams appeared to be so now. At the same time,
it's a different leadership structure, it's a different There's a
lot of things that Jaden Daniels has in terms of advantages.
That's it. I do not think that Caleb Williams would
have them where Jaden Daniels has them right now.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Didn't you ask? Were you the one that asked me
that like three weeks ago?
Speaker 3 (08:46):
You we we talked about it at some point. I
don't know who asked too, but we definitely had this
discussion three quarters of the way through the season. But
I think now that you've seen Jaden Daniels beat Tampa
Bay on the road and then go to the number
one seed and just show out in prime time in
front of the whole country, I think it's probably worth mentioning. Again.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah, what I would say about that is one, first
of all, I just feel bad for Caleb.
Speaker 3 (09:12):
I mean either too.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
You know, you see how this coaching search is going.
There's no rhyme or reason anything. We've heard Pete Carroll,
I think Brian Flores, there's some brid and it's like
it just speaks to how dysfunctional that organization is and
Washington obviously has historically been dysfunctional. But and again I
don't want this to sound like I'm tearing down Jayden
when he is having a historic, a star is born
(09:35):
performance in front of our eyes here, But like you know,
I just you look at the Bears and it's or
you look at the commanders. Excuse me. I know that
they've historically been a totally dysfunctional organization in the last
twenty years. But fresh start, new head coach, new offensive coordinator,
new management, new ownership, and everybody in that building is
(09:56):
bought in on Jayden Daniels, Whereas in a you know,
we don't have to make this a Caleb versus Jaden
conversation the second, but like it is kind of important,
and you and I talked about it. We talked about
dating back to last February. It's like, so Caleb's going
in in a hot seat coach situation, and you know
it's a defensive coach that has to win and what
(10:16):
is he and it's just it just I do think
what it shows I don't want to say more than
anything because it feels like it would be taking away
from Jadon Daniels. But what it does show is that
where you land matter, where who you land with matters.
How much better do we feel about Drake may going
into next year with Mike rabel as his head coach
as opposed to Gerard Mayo or even if it had
(10:37):
been Bill Belichick. So I don't want to take away
from Jayden Daniels. I think it's a good point by you,
and I think, listen independent what we think about Caleb Williams,
this feels like one of the first steps to Jade
and Daniels. If things go well, I mean, we could
be talking about him doing a lot. I don't want
to start putting labels on him, but I think we
all know what he is potentially capable of if he
(10:58):
can continue to play at this level.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
I also think, and just because of the geography of
the country, the possibility of Jade and Daniels v Lamar
Jackson over the next you know, even half a decade
or so, if Jaden continues to grow and Lamar obviously
we already know what level he's playing at. I mean,
they're not separated by a whole lot of real estate,
(11:22):
like they're very close together. That could become quite a rivalry.
Now it's certainly interconference, but there's a shot you could
see that Super Bowl this year. I'm not gonna say
that's what you are going to see, but it's possible.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
Can I can I just say if Jaden Daniels makes
a Super Bowl, that's insane. Do you understand the Olympics
that is going to go on on sports talk debate
shows to like how quickly that would escalate to who
can say the craziest thing about Jade and Daniels. I'm
just thinking about, honestly, and I know this is another
reference I've made a hundred times, but I'm just thinking
(11:55):
about Anthony Edwards last year where it went from wow,
he's one of the best players in the league, to wow,
he's the next face of the NBA to oh, my goodness, is.
Speaker 3 (12:04):
He likes better than Michael Chum?
Speaker 4 (12:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:05):
And I'm like, can we all chill out here for you?
Can we let the guy win maybe like two or
three rings before we compare him to mjuh By the way,
we do have an update in Detroit. Positive if you're
a Lions fan, Zane Gonzalez did just miss a field
goal forty five thirty one is the score. Lions will
get the ball back to twenty six to go. That
(12:29):
obviously that that that that field goal essentially would have
iced the game. Detroit still does trail by fourteen points
with two minutes and change to go, and so their
backs are against the wall. It does not look good,
but there is a glimmer of hope a Zane Gonzalez
miss field goal has given Detroit the ball back with
to twenty six left. Fox Sports Radio Errors Jason Martin.

We are broadcasting live from the Tireraq dot com studios.
We will come back. We'll let you know what happens
in the final two twenty six this game, there is
going to be a lot to discuss either way. And boy,
oh boy, do we have to talk about that early
game where according to one Houston Texan, it was the
Texans versus the referees. That's next. Fox Sports Radio.

hope you're not a Lions fan. I know you're not,
but I hope if you're listening you're not a Lions fan.
It's going to be a tough one. We have thirty
nine seconds left. Detroit is driving. They do still have
the football, but they're trailing forty five thirty one, thirty
(14:12):
nine seconds to go in this game. You know they're
in range to score and potentially kick the on side kick.
But not looking good if you're if you're a Lions
fan right now, as they have just gotten in the
red zone thirty nine seconds to go.
Speaker 3 (14:28):
So, assuming this ends the way we think it is
going to end, the AFC North zero to three in
the playoffs and all of them are done. Oh my goodness,
Packer's lost to the Eagles. Vikings got absolutely embarrassed by
the Rams, and now the Lions look to be dropping
as the number one seed to Jaydon Daniels rookie quarterback
(14:52):
and the Washington Commanders. So the AFC North that was
touted all season long looks like they may be exiting
the playoffs without a single victory.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Yeah, So, by the way, keep things going Detroit again
in the in the red zone forty five thirty one.
We are now under thirty seconds to go, and we
officially have a ballgame. Interception by Jared Goff in the
red zone. That is his third interception of the game,
the Lions fourth interception of the game. Detroit will not
(15:23):
be able to stop the clock. The Washington Commanders will
take a knee with twenty five seconds to go. Jason Martin,
the Washington Commanders have beaten the Detroit Lions forty five
to thirty one. The Washington Commanders will head to the
NFC Championship game. All right, let's do this, Jason. First
(15:43):
of all, want to go ahead, open the phone lines
one eight ninety nine on Fox one eight seven seven
nine nine six six three six nine. And what I
think I want to start with is this is this
story more about the Commanders rising to the challenge or
is it more about Detroit after a record setting season
(16:07):
for that franchise, disappointing ending to the season. Is it
more about Washington winning? Is it more about Detroit losing?
But we do have a final. The two coaches are
shaking hands at midfield. Final score in Detroit forty five
to thirty one. The Detroit Lions, as the number one
(16:27):
seed in the NFC have been eliminated. The Washington Commanders
will advance. As Jason Martin just told you, Jaden Daniels
becomes just the second rookie quarterback in the history of
the NFL to win two playoff games as a rookie
to open his career. I think part of the story
is Jade and Daniels. We're certainly going to talk about him.
(16:48):
I think part of the story is probably as well,
the performance by the Detroit Lions and Jared Goff one touchdown,
three interceptions for golf. Tell you what Jamart will come
back first of all again the phone umber one seven
seven ninety nine on Fox one eight seven seven nine
nine six six three six ' nine. Before we get
to it, though, let's get over the news desk. He's
(17:10):
gonna have all sorts of details to set up the conversations.
It's more about Washington winning or Detroit losing. First time
though this evening for our show, Let's get it to
the news desk. Steve Desager, take it away, sir.
Speaker 6 (17:20):
Hello to you, gentlemen, and Jaden Daniels, the first rookie
quarterback to have multiple TD passes in two different playoff
games his rookie year forty five thirty one the final
in the upset at Detroit. And by the way, I
believe when Dan Campbell came out to midfield to congratulate
the opposing coach tonight, he did not say see you
in two weeks.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
That was our Brandon Deutsch just tweeted out when he
set c in two weeks? Did he mean in Cabo
or can kuon or what did he mean there?
Speaker 6 (17:47):
You're right, Minnesota's out, Detroit's out. As you mentioned Green
Bay as well. So AP has this stat for us.
There have been more than just a few times that
a division has had three different teams make the playoffs. Apparently,
since the merger with the AFL in nineteen seventy, it's
thirty four different times division's had three teams same season
(18:07):
go into the playoffs. This is the only time where
all three went winless. The NFC north of twenty twenty four, already,
some people are saying online, could it possibly be the
neighbors in the Super Bowl? Washington and Baltimore?
Speaker 2 (18:23):
Jason Martins That was Jason Martin's take. That would be amazing.
Speaker 3 (18:27):
Washington, such a fun.
Speaker 6 (18:28):
Rivalry already people have said, so they're this good as
soon as Daniel Snyder leaves.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
What does that say?
Speaker 6 (18:37):
My goodness, Commanders fourteen and five beat a Detroit team
that was fifteen and two, and I need to say
out loud, if the Rams can pull off the upset tomorrow,
the La Rams will be hosting the NFC Championship game
next weekend. To say snow is in the forecast for
Philadelphia tomorrow is an understatement that Eagles Rams game. The
(19:00):
current forecast at kickoff ninety six percent chance of snow
and thirty four degrees. You mentioned all the scoring in
the second quarter of this Washington win at Detroit tonight.
In fact, it was four touchdowns for the Commanders and
two touchdowns for Detroit, all in the second quarter right
before halftime. The Fox stat at halftime was those two
(19:21):
had the highest scoring quarter in playoff history in the NFL,
forty two points combined. And the rookie does it again.
Jayden Daniels up to thirty five touchdowns this season, rushing
and passing combined. The rookie record is thirty six in
a season. Playoffs included justin Herbert's rookie year in twenty
twenty on on the day or on the night, I
(19:44):
should say now Jadon Daniels two hundred and ninety nine
yards passing and two scores, and on the ground sixteen
carries fifty one yards. The Washington run defense all season
not good, was among the worst in the league. It
allowed almost one hundred forty yards round rushing per game
on average. Tonight, yeah, they got rushing yards over two
(20:06):
hundred for Detroit, and yet Jamiir Gibbs only had fourteen
carries in this game. Fourteen carries, one hundred five yards,
two scores. The Lions are out forty five thirty one.
Commanders win It a franchise that had not won a
playoff game since the two thousand and five season until
last Sunday night and the upset at Detroit tonight, Kansas
City eliminated Houston today twenty three to fourteen. Texans end
(20:29):
up eleven and eight. Travis Kelcey seven receptions, one hundred
and seventeen yards and a touchdown. Texas Longhorns coach Steve
Sarkeishan got an extension through twenty thirty one. In the
NBA Atlanta in overtime one at Boston one, nineteen to
one fifteen. In college hoops tonight, Santa Clara wins at
number sixteen Gonzaga one three to ninety nine NHL Tampa
(20:53):
Bay five to one over Detroit. Nashville sixty two winners
against Minnesota. Back to you, Thank you very.
Speaker 2 (20:58):
Much, Steve Desager. This this is Fox Sports Radio, Fox
Sports Saturday or towards Jason Martin broadcasting live on the
tyreck dot Com studios to say you got you caught
up on everything else that happened in sports on Saturday.
But the story of the moment is exactly what we
plan on talking about quite a bit for the rest
of the night. Washington Commanders Final in Detroit beat the
(21:20):
Detroit Lions, final score forty five to thirty one. Jaden
Daniels as de Segre just told you. Two hundred ninety
nine yards passing, two touchdowns, fifty one yards rushing, converted
a couple of crucial fourth downs late in the game
to keep Detroit off of the field in that offense.
The other story it was just listen, it was a
(21:41):
disc There are a lot there is a lot of
blame to go around in Detroit, but it is worth
noting Jared goff Is, the quarterback. Quarterback gets a lot
of credit and also a lot of blame. One touchdown,
three interceptions, one pick six in this game, also an
interception in the final thirty seconds to seal the Detroit lost.
Jmart I'll just ask you right now, bigger story the
(22:05):
emergence of the Washington Commanders and Jaden Daniels or the disappointing,
stunning end to the season of the Detroit Lions.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
I think it's the former, because I think that the
star matters, and because this was prime time and it
was kind of the coming out party for Jaden Daniels.
That will be the bigger story long term, because if
Jaden Daniels goes on to have the career that he's
capable of having, this is going to be one of
(22:36):
those moments, along with the Hail Mary craziness at the
end of the Bears game and a couple of other
highlights during the season. But you recall about week ten
or so, we were all kind of looking at the
Commanders and saying they may have hit a bit of
a wall, no doubt, and I think that they did.
And then Jaden Daniels realized that he could still scale
that wall, and so he then started climbing it as
(22:56):
opposed to just running into it. And so now we're
waiting to see if a second wall emerges, because I
don't think the first one was enough to hold them
back for an entire half season. So I think the story,
I'm gonna think positively and choose joy and say it's
not gonna be about the Lions as much as it's
gonna be about Jaden Daniels becoming a superstar to the
entire country in front of a major audience, being the
(23:20):
only football game on and just putting forth one of
those kind of performances where it's just, oh my gosh,
he is faster than you think he is. He's making
every play. The Lions don't look like they know what
to do against him on defense. And remember this is
a coordinator and Aaron Glenn who's one of the top
candidates in the coaching cycle, and they were in EP
(23:41):
tonight they had no answer for him. Yes, they were
certainly depleted defensively big time, but nobody cares about that.
Like at this stage, it's gonna be I think about
Jaden Daniels first, and then the Lions. One b I
don't think this is gonna be forgotten about. It's gonna
be talked about as a big time failing, and you're
gonna look at you golf and that's going to be
talked about quite a bit as well. But I think
(24:03):
the big story, the big takeaway is number five in
the commander's uniform.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
Yeah, so let's stick with this for a little bit.
We got plenty of time to get to the Detroit
side of things. By the way, if you do want
to call in one eight seven, seven ninety nine on
Fox one eight seven seven nine nine six six three
sixty nine, we do have a couple callers already. We'll
get to them momentarily. I listen, I tend to agree
with you, j Martin. I do think probably the story
coming tomorrow is Jaden Daniels because it was such a
(24:30):
dominant effort. Right if it was a star quarterback, rookie quarterback,
and the final score here was, uh, you know, twenty
one seventeen and Jared Goff had three picks, it's a
completely different conversation. So to me, listen, we've been watching
this story. I think, like you said, the cool part was,
as you said, throughout the season, it felt like he
(24:51):
was hitting a little bit of a wall there at
the beginning. They have that hot start, they're four and one,
they're seven and two, then they end up losing three
straight to right in the middle of the season, they
had a weird late bye week and I think that
really rejuvenated them. And then what's been fun is that
they've just had a lot of high profile games late
in the year. Right is that you know, you have
(25:13):
the game against Michael Pennix that goes to overtime, rookie
on rookie in Week seventeen. You of course have the
crazy finish last week against Tampa. But this was absolutely,
in my opinion, the coming out party. And now you know,
I'll say this is that that as we look ahead
to what could potentially be an upcoming opponent, Like, think
it's kind of worth noting. I know the Eagle, they
(25:35):
beat the Eagles when Jalen Hurts got hurt with the
concussion and he went out. I know Jalen Hurts is back,
but they did just beat the Eagles a few weeks ago. Think,
if you can go into Detroit, I don't think you're
going to be scared to go into Sofi stadium if
that's who the opponent is. And so I know it's
kind of hard to have this conversation based on the
fact that we don't yet know who they will be playing,
(25:56):
but I bring it up to say, if you can
go in Detroit and beat these Lions. And I know
that NFC North did not have a good postseason, but
that is a legitimate Lions team, and there's a lot
to talk about from the Lion's perspective. I don't think
there's any reason to think that they can't keep this
going next week depending on who the opponent is.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
No, I don't either not in any way, shape or form. Again,
they are and Jayden Daniels especially is too young to
know how big what he's doing actually is. Like the
moment isn't too big for him. He hasn't even realized
it yet, probably, But I mean everybody else is seeing it,
and you're seeing some guys that have played for Washington
(26:32):
for a long time. Like if you happen to be
watching right now, you're seeing some of the locker room
celebration as Jaden Daniels just came into the locker room.
But I saw Terry McLaurin scary Terry's been one of
the best receivers in the league for a long time
and he's had nobody to throw him the football in ages.
That dude looks like the happiest human being other than
Donald Trump in the country right now, Like he is
(26:55):
just over the moon because he has been there through
the thin of the thin and now he's got the
thick of the thick, and he's one game away from
a Super Bowl. And again they know the Eagles. I
think that right now, if you were to give everybody
truth serum inside the NFL and say which quarterback scares
you more, Jay when Hurtzir, Jayden Daniels, I think the
(27:17):
answer is going to be Jaden Daniels. At this point,
the Rams look that Rams defense is coming of age,
and they got some young guys, but they got some
young studs and you know what Stafford is capable of doing.
So it's not a cakewalk. But if at this stage
now that you look at the field and you look
at everything that is to come, if the Commanders make
the Super Bowl, I don't think we should be surprised. Now,
(27:40):
Like if they were to win next week against whoever
they see, I don't think that should be a giant shock,
it should be a major accomplishment. But I actually think
that they've earned the right for it not to be
some Oh my goodness, this couldn't possibly have happened, Like,
yes it can. Like what we saw tonight did not
feel like a fluke. It felt like a t that
(28:00):
has arrived faster than anyone anticipated.
Speaker 2 (28:04):
We got two and a half hours to break this down. Still,
but let's get to the Detroit side, because I will say, well,
I think the story should be about Jaden Daniels and
the Washington Commanders. First of all, I'll say this, like,
I am happy for that organization. I'm happy for those
fans dealt with a lot of nonsense the last two
three decades, and you know, you just you hope for
(28:24):
a moment like this, You hope for a player like
Jayden Daniels, and you have it. I think there's a
lot of layers to the Detroit thing, though, And I
guess the first thing that I would ask, I don't
even know where to start. I don't even know where
to start, right, Like, it's like, one, it's just stunning. Two,
you know, you have two coordinators that we both feel
(28:45):
like not we both feel but that everybody feels like
are both going to get head coaching jobs in this
in this cycle. And I think, as excite, I guess
this is probably in my opinion, probably the biggest takeaway
is in my opinion realistically, I think the way that
(29:05):
I look at it is you always talk j mart
about windows and sports, and I do wonder if Detroit
just missed their best window last year. We know what
happened in San Francisco. If you kick the field goal
and you make it, it's twenty seven to twenty seven
with whatever, six seven minutes to go, they don't San
Francisco immediately scores, that game is over. You're up twenty
four to seven at the half. Now you have a
(29:27):
team that has been, you know, incredibly well put together
by Brad Holmes, but a lot of those guys are
coming off of rookie contracts. In the next year or two,
they're gonna start to get paid. You're almost certainly gonna
lose probably both coordinator, certainly at least one. But I
would have guessed probably both. And I do just wonder, man,
I do just look at this team and say, fourteen
(29:50):
and one, excuse me, sixteen and one at home home
field advantage because this was the big conversation, right, I mean.
Speaker 3 (29:57):
I'm entertaining two actually right, Oh.
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Yeah, yeah, because they lost the final week, final week
of the regular season. But I remember talking to Bernie
Fratto about this in August, because Bernie's the big Detroit guy,
he covered the team for years, and he said, Man,
the thing that I worry about with that team, they
need home field advantage, They need the game in a dome,
and if they don't get it, what's gonna happen. So
I just bring it up because a lot of guys
(30:21):
coming off rickey contracts, A lot of guys have already
signed those extensions, even if they haven't kicked in yet.
But you're gonna have to make tough decisions. You could
and almost certainly will lose both coordinators you had. Home
field advantage just feels like a really really, really tough,
tough situation for the Lions.
Speaker 3 (30:38):
It's tough. Yeah, I mean, you're probably gonna lose both coordinators,
as we both thought, and what the rest of the
league and everything else, And that always becomes the talking
point when the team loses, because you start to wonder
there will be talk I guarantee you on Detroit Sports
Talk this week that Ben Johnson and Aaron glam were
already looking towards the next job that happens. It happened
(30:59):
with the Titans when they lost in that first round
against the Cincinnati Bengals years ago, when they were a
number one seed on this kind of a Saturday in
January and managed to lose that game on a field goal.
At the end, it was all about, well, these guys
are looking to the future and all this stuff, and
that's going to happen again. Like let's say the Eagles
lose tomorrow, Well, Philadelphia is in their offense looks bad. Well,
(31:21):
then it's going to be about Kellen Moore and his
possibility of ending up in Dallas and all this. Washington
didn't have that problem, Like Kingsbury's been mentioned a couple
of times, but he's not like a red hot candidate
like you look at, for instance, a Kellen Moore or
a Todd Monkin, who came out this weekend said the
timing on all these interviews is yeah, yeah, yeah, sorry
(31:41):
that yeah. And Joe Brady's another example. It's just like
these are guys that are kind of having to play
two hats, because there's the jobs are open now and
these teams want to try and fill these vacancy so
they can get to their offseason planning, get ready for
the draft, all of these kinds of things, and it
all has to be done in kind of a tight timetable.
(32:03):
So the fact that the Lions have two coordinators that
are likely not going to be there next year, this
does feel a little bit to me like the Eagles
losing the Super Bowl to the Chiefs and then losing
one coach to Arizona, one coach to Indianapolis and coming
back and taking what was an obvious step back and
then bringing in Kellen Moore this year and kind of
(32:25):
finding that groove. But also along with Kellen Moore, you
also bring in Sakuon Barkley and that made a gigantic deal.
So you know, you talk about the rookie contracts and
all this, I mean situation for the Washington Commanders, they
have a quarterback that is the guy we can already
see that who is on a rookie deal, similar to
(32:48):
what the Texans did.
Speaker 7 (32:48):
Now.
Speaker 3 (32:49):
Stroud didn't have a great year this year. He dealt
with some injuries, certainly to a lot of his offense,
but maybe regressed a bit, but you know, I still
think he found himself a little at the end of
the season. But you have to take advantage of these
rookie windows, and you actually have that now. And when
you said I talk a lot about windows, I talk
about them in terms of them not existing. That if
(33:09):
you don't win now, you can't say, oh, we're definitely
gonna be back for the next five years, because a
lot of teams and a lot of groups that you
think are just built for that aren't. And the Lions
may be one of those cases. They may have already
had their best shot, they may have had their only shot.
I'm not saying that, but Dan Campbell's probably gonna have
to build a completely new staff, and he's certainly gonna
(33:32):
lose some guys, and we're gonna see exactly what they're
made of next year.
Speaker 2 (33:36):
We will see what they're made of next year, and
there will be a lot of discussion going forward. This
is Fox Sports Radio ERN towards Jason Martin. We're taking
the up till two am Eastern, so we'll come back,
We'll get to some of your calls, we will get
to more reaction as the Washington Commanders have pulled off
the stunner. They go to Detroit in the opening game
(33:57):
for the Detroit Lions of these playoffs and beat the
Troit Lions. Washington Commanders advance to the NFC Championship Game.
More reaction plus. Of course, we have to get to
the early game. We have to preview the two games
on Sunday. We got to talk about the coaching carousel,
and oh there's a college football playoff game still to come.
So we got a lot to get to, Jamart, got
(34:17):
a lot to get to. We'll come back. We'll continue
the conversation Detroit, Washington and the rest of a wild
couple days in football. This is Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (34:29):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (34:32):
Welcome back, everybody. Fox Sports Radio er Tors Jason Martin,
broadcasting live fromtheti iraq dot com studios. By the way,
if you want to call into the show one eight
seven seven ninety nine on Fox one eight seven seven
six six three six nine. We're on until two am Eastern,
so we're gonna take some of your calls here. In
just a minute, Jymart, I do have a question for you.
(34:55):
Uh and I'm curious for your perspective. You talked about, well,
we both we talked about kind of the coordinators, what
their futures are, of course Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn,
and you kind of talked about the idea of will
there be blame for this loss? That they were maybe
a little bit distracted with some of the interview process,
et cetera. Let me let me kind of flip it
(35:16):
on its head and go the exact opposite route. Do
you think in your eyes this is you know, just
your opinion, but do you think anyone do you think
either of these guys should be second guest about their
their coaching candidacy. I mean, you know, Ben Ben Johnson called,
you know listed you know, he's so into it, so
(35:37):
into the creativity, and when it works, it looks great.
But when it doesn't, you have Jamison Williams throwing an
interception at the worst possible time, and of course Aaron
Glenn's defense gave up forty five points in this game.
I guess thirty eight if you take away the pick
six that Jared Goff throw. Should either of these guys
should we be reconsidering them as head coaching candidates or
(35:57):
is that just part of the deal here.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
I think it is very knee jerk and very social
media age or comment board ye to start second guessing
guys because they had a bad night, Like, I don't
think that if you thought Ben Johnson was a mad
scientist genius before tonight, that all of a sudden he's
not one. Now. Maybe you overvalued him then, but even there,
(36:24):
like the stuff that he's capable of, he's still capable of.
When you get to this level, it's one and done
deal here. It's not best four of seven. You get
one shot. And he had a bad night and they
had a good game plan against him and Jaden Daniels
was I think jayde and Daniels shook everybody, and then
all of a sudden the Lions were trying to grip
(36:44):
and maybe do too much, and as we talked about,
they got away from what they've done throughout the season
and put themselves in risk situations as opposed to continuing
to feed the rock to Jamir Gibbs, who was just
tearing it up when he was given a chance to shine.
Can he look at Aaron Glenn like, if you want
to give Aaron Glenn a little bit more leeway? He
(37:07):
was dealing with more than half his starters, maybe even
three quarters of his starters not available for him. Like,
he just kept on losing guys. Some people would say
he was fielding almost a practice squad defense out there
compared to what he had at the beginning of the season.
And it's it's not that you. I mean, you have
to be able to do it with who you have.
But he kept losing guys all year long, and he
(37:28):
was losing critical guys in critical spots. Their secondary got
absolutely obliterated by injury. Of course, we know about Hutchinson
and we know what was even happening with the linebacking court.
Angelone just came back at the end of the season.
But I just think if you were looking, if you're
an NFL executive and you look at one game and say,
(37:49):
I don't know about this guy, then you probably shouldn't
be in that job. You can't be that reactionary to
one performance. You just can't because you're gonna miss out
on a lot of really talented people. Because there is
nobody ever to play or coach or do something in
sports at a high level that hasn't had a really
bad night. And unfortunately in sports Oftentimes that bad night
(38:12):
happens in the playoffs and that's the lasting impression. So
then it makes it feel like you went to bed
without brushing your teeth and you realize, yeah, ah, it's
kind of an ugly taste in my mouth right now.
I just think you have to be a little bit
more patient, a little bit more reserved, and you have
to know, like they've done way too much vetting on
these guys to look at one performance and say, oh, well,
(38:34):
we can't hire that guy, Like, I think that's insane.
The same stuff was being said about Brian Flores after
the Vikings defense performance on Monday night. It's like, if
you liked Brian Flores before Monday night, hopefully one bad
night where the guy who you might not like also
wasn't the guy on the field making the mistake in
some cases, like there were twelve men on the field
(38:55):
late in the game for Detroit in a key spot.
That was just a horrible stake by the defense. Right,
that shouldn't just disqualify Aaron Glenn, Like he's not all
of a sudden a moron because of that one penalty.
But I think that we live in such a reactionary
age that that's what's happened.
Speaker 2 (39:12):
The best example of why you probably shouldn't overreact to
a bad playoff performance by a candidate for a head
coaching job at a coordinator position. It was on the
other sideline tonight. You remember last time Dan Quinn wore
a Cowboys hat, jmut Away his defense gave up forty
eight to the Green Bay Packers last year, and listen,
I was the dummy that went on air and said, hey,
(39:34):
maybe he should be maybe we should be reconsidering him
as him as a head coach. I think it's safe
to say that he is doing just fine. As the
Washington Commanders do win in Detroit final score forty five
thirty one. They are headed to the NFC Championship game.
Fox Sports Radio air towards Jason Martin. We are broadcasting
live from the Tyreck dot Com studios Dean and Michigan.
(39:54):
Stay on the phone. We will get to top of
the next hour. We're gonna take your calls.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
More reaction.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
Detroit loses, Washington wins. What does it mean? Plus the
refs in case, oh, we gotta talk about it. That's
all next. Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (40:09):
Don't listening.
Speaker 2 (40:10):
No, Fox Sports Radio Radio welcome man, everybody, Fox Sports Radio,
Fox Sports Saturday and to Sunday. We have hit midnight Eastern,
which means it is Sunday in some parts of the country.
We are live, though, and it is important to note
we are live in a note take no nothing. We
are reacting in real time to a stunner in Detroit
(40:32):
as the Detroit Lions fall forty five to thirty one
to the Washington Commanders. Washington on to the NFC Championship Game,
where they will play the winner of Sunday's Rams Eagles game,
And in a few minutes we'll get to the early
game between Kansas City and Houston. Kansas City wins twenty
three to fourteen in that one, as they get set
(40:54):
for the winner of the Oh my goodness, gracious, we
got to talk about Bill's Ravens here in a minute.
Should match. We're broadcasting live from the tyreck dot com studios.
Tyreck dot com will help you get there an unmatched election,
fast free shipping, free road has a protection and over
ten thousand recommended installers. Tyreck dot com the way tire
buying should be Jamark. We've hit on a lot of
different angles on the Detroit Washington game, and we do
(41:19):
have our phone lines are jam packed. I want to
get to a couple of callers. But any any thoughts here?
As the Detroit Lions have been eliminated final score forty
five to thirty one. The big stories, of course Jade
and Daniels two hundred ninety nine yards passing, two hundred
and ninety nine yards passing excuse me, two touchdowns, also
had fifty one yards rushing, and the forty five points
(41:41):
the Commanders put up, but also the Lions being eliminated
as the number one seed in the NFC. Jared Goff
with three interceptions one pick six, one in the final
seconds when they were in the red zone with a
chance to potentially stay in the game. Any any quick
thoughts here before we get to some of the that
have been staying on the line.
Speaker 3 (42:01):
Here, only that during the break, I was listening to
Dan Campbell as he came up to the podium to
do his post game. He is devastated, like I don't
know that I've ever seen Dan Campbell sad like this,
like so sad. And the first question when he first say,
he's just like we didn't play well enough. We just
we didn't play together tonight and all this, but it
looked like looked like he was fighting back tears almost.
(42:24):
But he was asked like the first question was about
what a great season. He's just like, I can't even
talk to the guys like that. He's like, because none
of us feel that way. He said, you know, I
love those guys, but this is just is not the
time to talk about what kind of good season we
had and all this kind of like he's not even
listening to any of that. He looked like a guy
(42:46):
who knows what a great shot they had, yep, and understands.
And he even said, he goes, it doesn't matter if
he was seven seed to six seed to five seed.
The one seed I've lost in all of them, he said,
and he said, and he said, and it hurts, It hurts,
It stings, and it stays with you. And it's a
(43:07):
guy that just looking on his face, it's just like
we're never gonna have a better look at it than
maybe we just did. And it's tough. It's tough to
watch that. Like he was very raw and emotional in
all of those things. Of course, he said a lot
of stuff nicely about the commanders, but you know, he
talked about the turnovers and all of these kinds of things.
(43:28):
He even said he's just like everything was just a
little bit off. He's like it was just one of
those weird days. And I think all of that is accurate.
But it just shows again all these people. You can
talk about windows all you want, don't talk to Dan
Campbell about windows. And there's many stories throughout history that
will indicate, Yeah, you can say all you want, Oh,
(43:49):
they'll be back, but no one knows if you're ever
going to have a better look at it than you
just did. And you can look at his face and
listen to what he had to say, and no, right
there they realize that they just blew a golden opportunity.
Speaker 2 (44:04):
Well, it's a disappointing night for the Detroit Lions, but
it is an incredible night for the Washington Commanders organization.
And joining us now, we have a very special guest
from the Washington Commanders. Jeremy McNichols is joining us now. Jeremy,
can you hear me?
Speaker 7 (44:23):
Jeremy, I can hear you. Yeah, how you're doing?
Speaker 3 (44:27):
We're doing?
Speaker 6 (44:28):
How are we doing?
Speaker 2 (44:30):
How are you guys doing? The locker room sounds awesome.
Take us behind. What is it like to be a
Washington commander right now?
Speaker 7 (44:36):
Oh man, it's great. Man, Just all those honesting hours,
just his brotherhood. Just to be in to celebrate with
the guys right now. It just feels great. But we're
not doing yet. You know, we're gonna celebrate this for
the next twenty four hours that week playing and get
prepared for a championship game.
Speaker 3 (44:51):
Jeremy, you know, I do my part of this show
out of Nashville, and I covered you day after day
when you were here with the Tennessee Titans, and I
saw you in the playoffs. You're a guy that's been
around the block a little bit. But you guys are
one win away from a super Bowl with a rookie
quarterback that looks like he's been in the league for
ten years. What can you say about your quarterback at
(45:13):
this point?
Speaker 7 (45:14):
I mean, just on display every single weekday in and
day out, and once he put in his building when
he got drafted here, we knew it, you know, and
it's just amazing to see him just a humble kid,
you know, faithful man, and just go out there every
single weekend, put the team on his on his back
when it needs to happen and lead us to the victory.
(45:37):
I'm so excited for him and so excited for his
future in his career.
Speaker 2 (45:40):
Jeremy Jeremy McNichols joining US Washington Commander's running back who
of course Washington has scored a touchdown tonight as the
Commanders win forty five to twenty eight in Detroit. Jason
just asked you about your rookie quarterback, what about your
head coach? I mean, first of all, let me ask
you this Dan Quinn backwards hat. You know, like, what
is that guy like day to day because it feels like,
(46:04):
you know, can be stern when it needs to be,
but guys like him, but empowers his assistant coaches, and
he just seems like a guy that everybody would want
to play for.
Speaker 7 (46:14):
Yeah, I mean for his president. He's not much that
needs to be said. He's done it for a long
time in this league, got a successful and successful and
you know, all these guys in the locker room don't
want to run to a wall for him. I mean,
he show he shows the players love, He shows us love,
and he loves his game. And that's what we got
to get back to him. So that's we love our coach.
(46:37):
He's one of the best in the league, so we're
gonna give it all for him every single week.
Speaker 3 (46:43):
Jeremy, you know, look at guys like Terry McLaurin, Brian Robinson, yourself,
certainly Austin Eckler. One thing I noticed about your offense
is it doesn't seem to matter who it is that's
doing the work, as long as the work is getting done.
Like you are three running backs, some guys that you
know you want to carry the carry the load, but
(47:03):
you've got no problem watching those other guys succeed. Does
it feel kind of like a selfless offense in that
way where you're all just kind of in it together
and there's not really any kind of a diva factor there.
Speaker 8 (47:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (47:14):
I mean, like you said, it's no this year.
Speaker 3 (47:16):
We're brothers.
Speaker 7 (47:18):
Everybody has a role, and everybody masters in their role.
Everybody respect their roles, and whenever your number is called,
that's what we got to go out there and execute.
And that's been like that since day once. And I
just believe everybody on this roster, from top down practice squad,
whoever gets called up, whoever gets signed in this building,
is on the same page with that, and we respect
(47:39):
each other and all we want to do is win.
So whoever's out there, they're going to execute and we
believe that they're going to execute it because we do
it from you know, Monday till Saturday. That preparation is
done and that trust is there between the teammates and
the coaches when we go out there and you see
it up, you.
Speaker 3 (47:57):
Know we trusted.
Speaker 2 (47:59):
Jeremy McNichols joining us Fox Sports Radio last one for me, Jeremy.
You guys have obviously played Philly twice this year. You
have not seen the Rams? Do you watch tomorrow? First
of all, do you watch it all?
Speaker 1 (48:09):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (48:10):
Are you in the building getting treatment? Do you watch?
And if you do, do you watch as a as
a fan? Do you watch as an upcoming opponent? Like
how will Jeremy McNichols take in Eagles Rams, assuming of
course that you will.
Speaker 9 (48:21):
Be watching, Oh yeah, I mean tomorrow is getting getting treatment,
watching his game, getting getting putt in his game to rest,
and then watching tomorrow's game between Philly in LA.
Speaker 7 (48:34):
You know, I'll be watching it like like film. Honestly,
whichever team we play, we'll be ready for and win
to practice throughout the week and prepare, and we'll be
ready for him the following a week.
Speaker 2 (48:47):
That is Jeremy McNichols running back for the Washington Commandies.
I do actually have one more question. See her from
Rancho Santa Margarita, California. If you guys play the Rams
in the NFC Championship game, how many gets you think
Jeremy McNichols is going to need for that game?
Speaker 3 (49:02):
Oh man, A lot, a lot, a lot.
Speaker 7 (49:06):
But it'd be so cool just coming back home and
playing in front of the home crowd. You know, it's
so much love and support, just being raised from there
and growing up there and just having so many teammates
and friends and family out there. It'd be awesome.
Speaker 2 (49:24):
That is Jeremy McNichols. Man, We thank you so much
for your time. We know it's a crazy night. The
locker room sounds awesome. Jeremy McNichols live from the Commander's
locker room. Jeremy, congrats on the win.
Speaker 3 (49:36):
Enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (49:36):
I know they give you twenty four hours to enjoy it,
so enjoy it.
Speaker 3 (49:39):
Have fun.
Speaker 2 (49:40):
We cannot wait to watch you guys next week against
either Philly or the Rams.
Speaker 7 (49:44):
Oh thank you so much, thank you for having me.
Speaker 2 (49:47):
That was Jeremy McNichols, the running back, one of the
running backs for the Washington Commanders, a touchdown this evening
for the Commander's Commanders forty five to twenty one victory.
Jamis just came.
Speaker 3 (49:59):
Very full circle for Okay, late on me, go ahead.
So let's just say that his last name, if you
were to mispronounce it, there would be a way to
mispronounce it that would be very unfortunate on the radio.
It would be very funny for a lot of people,
but it would also become a sound drop that might
(50:19):
talk about when that guy might play in your city
for the time. And let's just say that a certain
radio host formerly that did daily radio in Nashville made
that mistake and it got saved and played I don't know,
several hundred times throughout the course of his radio career
in Nashville, and then he talked to him just now
(50:42):
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (50:43):
Well it makes you feel better. I don't know what
the flood would be, And I googled, you don't I
googled Jason Martin, Jeremy McNichols, and nothing came up on
on the Google search.
Speaker 3 (50:54):
Well, think about Nichols and think about what it's very
close to Nichols. I mean if you were to take
the C H out and replace it, I don't know
with a P for instance. Oh okay, I.
Speaker 2 (51:10):
Could see where I could see where that would happen.
Speaker 3 (51:12):
Yeah, well it did happen.
Speaker 2 (51:14):
I mean listen. So when I heard that, I was
just kind of like, Okay, now, did you no, no, no,
that that was really him? I think as far as
I could tell him, So did you say it while
interviewing him? Or you just said it like talking about it?
Speaker 3 (51:28):
Think I just said it during analysis, like talking about
a game. I don't. I actually don't think we have
Actually I had actually interviewed him on the radio until there.
I've interviewed a whole lot of those guys, but not
sure him. But certainly we talked about him after a
couple of good performances that he had with the Titans,
and uh, yeah, I made the one mistake that you know,
(51:50):
you can be perfect and then one percent of the
time you can be bad and that's all that people
know you FORO talked to Bill Buckner about it. Well,
for me, it was Jeremy MCB it's there. He was, well,
you know what his career is, O, we're gonna get
sane or still? Uh that we've already had him before we.
Speaker 2 (52:07):
Have yeah after when one of the college football playoff games? Right, crazy?
Speaker 3 (52:11):
Yeah, Michigan, Yeah, Michigan.
Speaker 2 (52:12):
Okay, hey, I'll tell you no, No, we got them
after the beat Ohio State. I think I think he
might be right. I know we had him on at
some point and all that. I'll tell you what though, Listen,
there's a guy named Dean in Michigan. Who is I
want to talk to Ben on the phone, and I
pose this question at about eleven forty five Eastern. It
is now twelve thirteen, twelve fourteen. Dean has been on
(52:34):
the phone. Bigger is the bigger story, the Commanders win
or the Lions loss. I believe I know where Dean
is going to go with this. Dean, you're on with
Fox Sports Radio aer Tours Jason Martin. Dean, go ahead.
The floor is yours, my friend. You have earned the floor,
no doubt about it.
Speaker 7 (52:50):
Well, first off, I just want to talk about.
Speaker 10 (52:54):
I hate I hate the Commanders so much.
Speaker 4 (52:57):
I love This line seemed way too much Ben Johnson
third and one and wear an empty set with two
of the bets running backs in the league.
Speaker 2 (53:08):
Point.
Speaker 10 (53:08):
Hey, I'm not even gonna blame Jamo.
Speaker 1 (53:10):
For that one.
Speaker 7 (53:11):
You can thrown in prole.
Speaker 4 (53:12):
He cares.
Speaker 7 (53:13):
Why are you call him that?
Speaker 5 (53:15):
So let do you tell me why?
Speaker 3 (53:17):
Dean?
Speaker 2 (53:17):
Let me ask you a question.
Speaker 7 (53:18):
Man, Nah, you go on going?
Speaker 2 (53:21):
So Ben Johnson, do you and like, does the cuteness
outweigh the stupidity? Like it's all fun in games when
you're up twenty seven to three against the Bears or
whatever it is, and you're faking falling down. But then,
as you said, as j mart said earlier, Jamiir Gibbs
is getting almost eight yards per carry and you decide
to let Jamison Jamison Williams throw the football, Like is
(53:43):
it cute or is it just obnoxious? And I think
you know it's tough to ask in this moment, but.
Speaker 4 (53:48):
Go ahead, obnoxious obnoxious by flat out, I don't care
how up we are, how down we are.
Speaker 7 (53:54):
You have a punch in the mouth running back like Montgomery,
or you have.
Speaker 4 (53:58):
A human joints like Jamir Gids, but you want to
pass it and then let me let me tell you
about this man All year it's when everybody else is injured,
all injured.
Speaker 7 (54:06):
Bill, It's oh a ton of bull ball, man. Let
me tell you this.
Speaker 4 (54:10):
What about the guy who played his first snaps lay
on our defense? Brian branches out for whatever reason.
Speaker 1 (54:16):
I don't even know.
Speaker 4 (54:17):
Amik Robertson's in the hospital with an elbow injury. Right now,
you got Kirby, Jack Campbell and alex Anzeloni. I'm just saying,
with a broken leg, what more are we supposed to do?
It's a practice squad of a defense right now, and
Maddy's gonna be started. Jack Campbell, you are about probably
two hundred and fifty to two hundred and eighty pounds player.
Speaker 5 (54:35):
Goddamns all the.
Speaker 2 (54:36):
Right of them all right. That was Dean in Michigan
taking the loss in stride. Thank you, Dean. We appreciate
the call. Uh, we got time for one more. Let
me let's see we got time for one more. I
don't know if you could top Dean in Michigan. But
who do we got here? We got let me see here,
we got Jared in Boston. You're on Fox Sports Radio, Aeron, Torurris,
(54:57):
Jason Martin, Jared, Well, what's the story of the game
to you, sir, how.
Speaker 7 (55:04):
Are we doing?
Speaker 2 (55:04):
Doing good?
Speaker 3 (55:05):
How are you?
Speaker 10 (55:08):
I'm a little shocked after that game, and I don't
really know where did the Lions go from here? I
cannot like of me thinking about like they'll be back
next year. Right, it's a good sam good coding, but like,
what the hell happened? One of my good friends, Danciata,
(55:32):
he said, he coins the phrase darnald, Well, that's what Jared.
Speaker 2 (55:36):
Go Hey, Jared, I apologize your Your connection is tough.
So this is what we'll do. We'll come back and
we're actually gonna answer Jared's question, where do the Lions
go from here? Gonna lose both coordinators almost certainly, despite
Dean's disgruntledness with Ben Johnson, Gonna lose both coordinators. You know,
can you win big with Jared Goff? Can you win big?
(55:57):
Especially if you if you cannot go through Detroit in
the playoffs. We'll come back, And Jared did have a
good question what is next for these Detroit Lions? Because,
as Dan Campbell said, there's no solace in winning fifteen
regular season games when the season ends like it did tonight.
We'll talk all that next. This is Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 8 (56:18):
And you lose these games. Man, It's like the players
what they put into it. A lot of people don't know,
you know what they go through. You have to get
up bodies, beaches, you know, mentally, stay locked in and
do those things. So long season.
Speaker 2 (56:38):
That was an emotional Dan Campbell after the game tonight
for people just joining us if you've somehow been under
a rock for the last couple hours. Detroit Lions, as
the number one seed in the NFC fifteen and two
in the regular season, do fall at home to open
the playoffs to the Washington Commander's final score forty five
to thirty one. We are Er Torris Jason Martin broadcasting
(57:00):
from the tyreck dot Com studios and should mention football fans.
Be sure to tune into Fox Sports Radio every Sunday
morning beginning at ten am Eastern seven Pacific for Countdown
to Kickoff presented by BETMGM, Brian Know, Jeff Schwartz, a
professional better Bill Krakenberger will have you covered three hours
before kickoff. Every Sunday morning, listen to Countdown to Kickoff
presented by BETMGM. Right here on Fox Sports Radio and
(57:20):
the iHeartRadio app. Guys on countdown to kickoff will certainly
have a lot about this game, as well as the
two games on Sunday. At some point we'll get to those.
J Mart, but do want to put a little bit
of a bow on this because you know, Jaydon Daniels
and Washington are the feel good story. But I still
think the conversation has to be about the Detroit Lions again,
(57:41):
because you have so many guys on rookie contracts, because
you have two coordinators that are probably gonna be gone,
and because you know, listen, these these opportunities just aren't guaranteed.
And you know, you look at somebody like the San
Francisco forty nine ers this year, they go from the
super Bowl to missing the playoffs, and I think that
team has a lot of uncertainty in its future. I'm
(58:01):
not saying we're there with the Detroit Lions, but I
don't know that they will have a better two year
window anytime soon than they just had losing in the
NFC Championship Game last year, getting the number one seed
this year, having zero Super Bowl appearances and obviously zero
Super Bowl titles to show for it.
Speaker 3 (58:19):
Yeah, and you know, we talked about that division all
year long, and again they come up completely empty in
the playoffs with the Packers that started bad and never
got better in kind of an ugly game against the Eagles.
The Vikings are just going to want to try to
forget what happened on Monday against the Rams, and then
(58:40):
of course the Lions coming up empty tonight against the Commanders.
But the other thing about the future for the Lions
is the Bears still have Caleb Williams and they're going
to have a new coach and we're going to see
what they do there. The Packers, they dealt with Jordan
Love being in and out of hell, and maybe he's
(59:00):
going to grow a bit. He certainly this year started
to look like somebody that might have been paid a
hair too early. And then the Vikings are likely going
to be rolling with JJ McCarthy. The division is going
to look different, it's going to feel different, but it's
still got a ton of talent, it's still got a
lot of problems in terms of being able to get
out of there. And you know, you realize that the
(59:23):
Lions are the first team to win fifteen games in
the regular season and lose in the playoffs in their
first game, like It's never happened before, So you winning
fifteen games again next year is likely not going to
happen again. You weren't healthy this year. But you're also
going to have to do something to replace Ben Johnson
(59:43):
and something likely to replace Aaron Glenn and come back
after a heartbreaking loss here when you were the number
one seed at home and do that. And is golf
going to be a little fractured year? What are the
fans going to think of him? But how is he
going to feel?
Speaker 7 (59:59):
Like?
Speaker 3 (01:00:00):
Here's a guy that scored three points in a Super
Bowl against the Patriots defense, Here's a guy who lost
after being up seventeen in an NFC Championship game against
San Francisco a year ago. And then here's a guy
that got out dueled by a rookie quarterback on his
home field tonight where the commander scored forty five and
(01:00:22):
he ends up with three interceptions. I would agree with
Dan Campbell and say the last one he kind of
throws out one away, but he still had two picks
in this game and a fumble to go along with it,
and just wasn't very good. So in the biggest moments
in his career, he has managed to underperform, and at
some point that's something that sticks with you within your psyche,
(01:00:42):
not even with the end of the organization and the
fan base. It's something you have to get over. So
how is golf going to come out of the gates
next year? There's just so many things that you don't know,
and the offseason ends up becoming critically important. And the
Lions they were in win now mode, they really were,
and they were put together for that. Injury certainly took
(01:01:03):
their toll. But I don't know where they go from
here because they're probably going to have to find a
new OC in DC and Dan Campbell's going to have
to work harder, maybe than he ever has. Considering the
success that they've had. It would be very easy for
them to fall off a cliff.
Speaker 2 (01:01:20):
Tell you what, jmart So one, I agree with pretty
much everything you said. You feel bad, but this is
the reality of life in the NFL. Speaking of life
in the NFL, there was another game on Saturday. We
have not gotten to it yet. We will discuss all
of that. We got to start looking ahead to Sunday
because my goodness to X two very exciting matchups, including
(01:01:41):
obviously the headliner in Buffalo. We'll come back. We'll do
all that, but first though, let's get it over the
news desk Steve Seger. What is trending?
Speaker 6 (01:01:48):
And as we've mentioned, chance of snow and Philadelphia for
Eagles Rams Sunday three pm Eastern time, and then it's
Baltimore at Buffalo and the forecast is Buffalo. It's not
great there. It's due to be under twenty degrees for
that round game. By the way, Jay Glazer did mention
on postgame show after the Lions lost tonight that, regarding
the Chicago Bears head coach opening, Chicago is going to
(01:02:09):
talk to Eddie George Tomorrow, who has been Tennessee State
football coach.
Speaker 2 (01:02:13):
Can you do me a favorite that it is correct?
Can you just next update, just list the people that
Chicago's not talking to for their head coaching.
Speaker 6 (01:02:19):
That's right, because I stopped counting at twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:02:22):
It's embarrassing, Jamart, we might have to talk about this
an hour. I know we have like thirty seven topics
to get to an hour three. The Bears are a
freaking embarrassment. I'm officially feeling bad for Caleb Williams. Sorry
to say, you're apparently Jeff Olbrick not available now so well.
And to be clear, Eddie George is having success as
an HBCU head coach. This is an abomination to a
(01:02:43):
young quarterback that, as we said last week, if they
mess up this this higher, they can ruined him for
his career probably never recovers. By the way, depending on
who the higher is, if I was Caleb Williams, he
should demand a trade. That sounds crazy. I'm not being stark.
I think he should.
Speaker 6 (01:03:00):
But anyway, and you mentioned as far as openings, there
could be coordinator openings now with Detroit. Can this franchise
be like Philadelphia and lose coordinators? And my goodness, they're
still here on the doorstep of the conference championship. If
they win tomorrow, that's a game they would now host.
By the way, Rams Eagles winner will host the NFC
title game next weekend because Detroit is out. Washington beat
(01:03:23):
him forty five to thirty one. Jaden Daniels two hundred
ninety nine yards passing two touchdowns. The NFL passed along
this stat tonight. He has beaten yet another quarterback who
was drafted number one overall. That's five times in his
rookie year, Jaden Daniels has done that. No rookie has
ever done that going back to nineteen fifty including postseason,
(01:03:46):
and so with the two results today in the divisional playoffs,
this trivia question needs no updating. Who are the four
NFL teams that have never been to a Super Bowl?
The Lions, the Texans, Xonville and the Cleveland Browns. Those
are the four.
Speaker 2 (01:04:03):
That's depressing fear Browns fan or Lions fan.
Speaker 6 (01:04:05):
We have a rookie quarterback in the NFC title Game
next weekend, and in fact, to knock off the top
seed as a rookie QB. Apparently that had only been
done once over fifteen years ago.
Speaker 2 (01:04:17):
Joe Flacco is.
Speaker 6 (01:04:18):
A rookie against Tennessee in this game, and Washington did
score a lot we mentioned earlier, four touchdowns second quarter
for them, two touchdowns second quarter for Detroit, highest scoring
quarter in NFL playoff history, but red zone tds for
the Commanders four for four, red zone tds for Lions
three for six. Lions lost by two tds, and keep
(01:04:41):
in mind they threw a pick six in the first half.
Washington no turnovers, took no sacks, and a franchise that
hadn't won a playoff game since the two thousand and
five season, is going to the NFC Championship. Meanwhile, Kansas
City is into a conference title game for the seventh
straight year. The Chiefs eliminated Houston today twenty three to fourteen.
(01:05:03):
The falcons new defensive coordinator is Jeff Ulbrich, who was
the Jets interim head coach. Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkejian
got an extension through twenty thirty one. He had been
contacted by NFL teams two or three, reportedly the late
game in the NBA's A Final. Houston wins again one
twenty five, one to oh three at Portland, which has
dropped five straight. Shay Gilgess Alexander of OKC is questionable
(01:05:26):
for Sunday with a spring wrist. He missed their Friday
game Atlanta one in overtime at Boston.
Speaker 2 (01:05:31):
Back to you, thank you very much, Steve Seger. This
is Fox Sports Radio, Fox Sports Saturday into Sunday, depending
on where you are towards d Smart broadcasting live from
the Tyreck dot Com studios. Jmart. We should should talk
about the other game some point. Kansas City does get
the win over the Houston Texans. Final score in Kansas
(01:05:53):
City twenty three to fourteen, a late safety, by the way,
was interesting for betters to say the least. One hand,
On the one hand, Kansas City does win again. On
the other hand, And I don't know if you want
to talk about the game itself, but there's two interesting things.
One Chris Plank shared this stat earlier. According to ESPN
(01:06:14):
Stats and Info, Texans are the first team to outgain
their opponent by one hundred plus yards, not turn the
ball over and lose a postseason game. Previous such teams
were forty nine and zero in the playoffs. Also worth noting,
there's a couple just things I want to get to here. One,
I don't want to solely blame the refs because Houston
(01:06:36):
missed a field goal right before the half. They had
a field goal blocked and missed an extra point that
would have tied the game at thirteen. But it is
also worth noting j mart two very questionable roughing. The
passer penalties extended.
Speaker 3 (01:06:48):
Oh, they were bad calls. They were bad calls.
Speaker 2 (01:06:51):
Uh, I'm just gonna say it too. Rough in the
passing penalties extended drives Kansas City scores on both of them.
They end up winning by nine. And by the way,
after the game, will Will Anderson said, I told you
all week, Uh, it was gonna be US against the
US against Earth, It's gonna be Houston against the refs.
So anyway, if there's an angle outside of the refs
(01:07:12):
that you want to talk to, I'm happy to do it.
But I just felt like I should at least reference.
It feels like that was the talking point after the
game more than anything else.
Speaker 3 (01:07:21):
You look, it's gonna be when it's the Chiefs. It's
actually very tired as far as I'm concerned. Like I
thought those two calls were really bad calls. I do.
I can't stand the rest and the league are on
the take. They want Kansas City in the super Bowl.
Like I can't listen to this garbage. I just can't.
Like we live in such a conspiracy theory society at
(01:07:41):
this point that it's just become incredibly old.
Speaker 5 (01:07:44):
For me.
Speaker 3 (01:07:45):
Again, I thought both those calls were bad. I actually
do have one point to make about the game lease
with the yardage discrepancy, So Houston's offensive line is an abomination,
Like they are absolutely horrendous They've dealt with some injuries, certainly,
but they haven't been able to keep CJ. Stroud upright
All season long. He was sacked the second most in
(01:08:05):
the league, and he was sacked eight times in this
game by the Kansas City defense. Two things about that,
a lot of them came on third down early in
this game when they were moving the ball down the
field against Kansas City, and then on a third down CJ.
Stroud would be sacked and it turned a field goal
into a fifty plus yarder that Fairburn missed and or
(01:08:30):
would result in a punt. It stopped them from being
able to advance. If they could have found a way
not to give up sacks on third down, that would
have been in better shape. And I also want to
point this out again game related, even though we're going
to talk more about the officials. I know that, but
a couple of hes are on Stroud. Like Stroud did
play well, but Stroud's got to get rid of the football.
(01:08:53):
When you realize that your offensive line is a dumpster fire,
then get the ball out of your hand. Like I
know he's trying to make a play, but stop taking
these sacks. And there were a couple of times where
he ran the ball when he should have just thrown
it away. One of them tweaked his ankle, it looked
like or tweaked his knee, and he came back in
he one hundred percent after missing a little bit of time,
(01:09:14):
and some of those kinds of things. He's he is
a competitor and he's trying to make plays, but there
are spots where it's like, dude, you got to get
the ball out of your hands, like you realize you
don't have the time that you want to have to
make this play. If the play ain't there, get out
of the pocket and throw the football into the stands somewhere,
as opposed to getting dropped again and losing yardage. Those
(01:09:36):
were things that frustrated me in this game for the
Texans and for Stroud, because I know what Stroud was
dealing with. But at the same time, I don't think
he helped himself because he really he just held the
ball too long when his offensive line clearly wasn't able
to hold up.
Speaker 1 (01:09:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:09:53):
No, And I think you know that's that game was
kind of a metaphor for the Houston Texans season up
in down you know, ten and seven in a obviously
a not great division, just a weird year for them,
and uh with them season comes to an end, they
have some issues. And by the way, so it's tough,
(01:10:13):
right because I don't just want to make it about
the refs because again, missed the field goal that was
very makeable at a field goal, blocked extra point, would
it's tied it, But it does feel like the refs
were the topic of conversation, so like I don't know
what to do, j Mark, because it's all anybody wants
to talk about, Like I don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:10:30):
Like like we can do you know what I'm saying, right,
Oh yeah, no, I just the idea of like the
conspiracy theory crap, Like I'm just over it, Like it's
not every game is the league is not on the
take and these officials are not on the take every
time your team or a team you don't like gets
a call.
Speaker 2 (01:10:49):
So I so that part I absolutely agree with. And
the other thing is is that I don't know, like
it's so tough right because the Chiefs are the you
know there the evil empire right now and people want
to see him lose. And so I do think there
is an element of like the league, I don't know
(01:11:12):
if the league wants them there, Like, is it great,
it's tough? Is it great? Our dynasty is good?
Speaker 3 (01:11:18):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:11:19):
Is having a team that half of the audience will
tune in because they want to see them lose? Is
that good for ratings?
Speaker 3 (01:11:24):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:11:25):
I also don't know that. I feel like the league, like, like,
let's work under the assumption that that's true, right, Let's
work under the assumption that the league is actively trying
to help them win games. I don't know why they're not.
By the way, they're not a very fun watch right now.
There's a lot of other great storylines. I mean, imagine
how big Super Bowl Week would be if Lamar Jackson
(01:11:47):
gets there. Imagine how big it would be if it
was Raven's Commanders. Imagine how big it would be if
it was Raven's Eagles. Like he go on and on
down the list, Josh, so like that to me is
the weird part is I get it. I don't necessarily
think that even if we worked under the assumption that
there might be truth to it, I don't know that
(01:12:08):
the league would want them there. And then the other
thing I'll just say really quick is I did think
that Troy Aikman brought up a great point during the
game is that I do think that while we want
to protect quarterbacks, we have to evaluate the rules as
they're currently structured. Because Mahomes al was talking to Brandon Deutsch,
who does all of our audio editing in the back.
(01:12:29):
He does an awesome job. I was talking to him
about it before the game, and Aikman brought brought it up.
He didn't necessarily use this exact analogy, but there's almost
like a James Harden quality to Patrick mahomes right now
where he's found this little glitch in the system where
and Troy Aikman basically said he's dancing around waiting for
a hit, so that you know, basically I don't I'm
(01:12:53):
rambling and this is all.
Speaker 3 (01:12:54):
Basically when they basically he's gonna tiptoe down the sidelines,
or he's gonna freezes before he goes out of bounds.
He's gonna wait for somebody to launch, and he's gonna
step out of bounds so it looks like he got
hit out of back or immediately he dropped that up
from Aaron Rodgers because Rogers was the master of that
in Green Bay and Patrick Mahomes has been doing it
now for years and people can't stand it. But the
(01:13:16):
problem is it's because all he's doing is doing what
the rules allow him to do.
Speaker 2 (01:13:21):
Yes, and or dropped to the ground, you know, like
there was a slide where he hadn't even begun the
slide and they didn't even hit him, and it was
called for a fifteen yard penalty. And it is worth
noting it was a thirteen to twelve game at that point.
It was on a third and long, they get the
first down and they end up scoring a touchdown and
(01:13:42):
never obviously Houston was never able to catch up. So
so yeah, I agree with you. The league is not
out to help Kansas City. I also agree with anybody
who feels like it's frustrating. And by the way, that
includes people in the Houston Texans locker room who were
clearly very frustrated after that game. And frustrated. When I
say that, I mean with the refs. Fox Sports radio
(01:14:02):
eritors Jason Martin broadcasting live from the tire rack dot
Com studios. We will come back. De Sager will join us.
Do Sager will have plenty on things that you may
have missed throughout the day. On Saturday and plenty that
you didn't. That's all. Next Fox Sports Radio, Welcome back everybody,
Fox Sports Radio. Eric Torris, Jason Martin broadcasting live from
(01:14:22):
the tyrack dot Com studios. We're gonna start looking ahead
to Sunday here at just a few moments. But before
we look ahead, gotta look back. Steve Desager at this
time every Sunday morning catches us up on what we
miss Saturday to Saga take it away.
Speaker 6 (01:14:37):
If the Eagles can win in what's forecasted to be
snow for their divisional playoff at home tomorrow against the Rams,
Philly would be hosting Washington after the Commander's upset Detroit tonight.
It would be only the second time in the last
decade you would have a conference title game featuring two
teams from the same division. The Rams hosted the forty
nine Ers few years ago with a ton of Niner
(01:14:58):
fans there, but the Rams did win in the home park.
As for Kansas City, they're into a conference title game
for the seventh straight year after eliminating Houston today. Caseyes
will be hosting next weekend. And as this game progressed,
I'm sure there were millions of people watching saying this
game seems a little closer than it should be, and
yet again Kansas City wins. This is like a sentence
(01:15:20):
to be repeated for about four to five months now,
because this is the twelfth time this season that the
Chiefs have won by single digits, a record in NFL history,
most such wins in a single season by any team
regular season in playoffs twelve wins by single digits. Here
we had Detroit tonight, not only a one seed for
(01:15:41):
their conference, Detroit was the number one total offense in
the NFC over four hundred yards a game. They had
offense over five hundred yards worth tonight and did not win.
Detroit was averaging thirty three points a game, best in
the NFL. Had thirty one tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:15:58):
Did not win.
Speaker 6 (01:16:00):
Did Kansas City ever score thirty three points in any
game this year?
Speaker 3 (01:16:04):
No, not one.
Speaker 6 (01:16:06):
Kansas City did not score over thirty points in any
game the whole season, and yet had the best record.
In fact, it's now sixteen and two. So Kansas City
advances today. Washington advances tonight. Washington's franchise is into the
NFC Championship Game for the first time in over thirty years,
and They're going there with a rookie quarterback. Jaden Daniels
(01:16:28):
had over two hundred and forty yards passing just in
the first half, setting a rookie record. He and his
team yet again, no turnovers, They took no sacks tonight,
and that's seven straight wins for Washington. As Tonight's game
went along, it reminded me of an upset loss that
Joe Montana suffered in his San Francisco career, because here
(01:16:49):
you had Detroit as the one seed and divisional round
and at home, and no one expecting him to lose.
All that was the case when Montana and company late
eighties were hosting the Minnesota Vikings. And keep in mind,
aside from that upset, Joe Montana was thirteen and three
in the playoffs in the nineteen eighties and they were
one seed in this particular year and hosting a Minnesota
(01:17:10):
team that went eight and seven, and still there was,
like tonight, a pick six thrown in the first half.
Like tonight, a shocking double digit deficit at halftime at home,
those Niners were down twenty to three at break, and
like tonight, it seemed like the home team that we
all thought should have won, just couldn't stop the opponent
(01:17:32):
on that day. Also a Saturday, Minnesota won by twelve
and advanced. Tonight, Washington wins by fourteen and advances. So
this is two playoff wins for Washington, a franchise that
had won a single playoff game since the two thousand
and five season. Until last weekend, had been zero to
five in the postseason since. But what a run already
there on this postseason. Add up the two games, Commander's
(01:17:55):
offense has had sixteen drives, one punt. They scored eleven
times and had one punt. In fact, it's seven touchdowns
plus four field goals. There was a missfield goal late tonight,
dan Quinn, can he actually take his team to a
Super Bowl in his first full season there in the
(01:18:17):
last fifteen years, that's happened once Gary Kubiak Broncos about
a decade ago. But more amazing, guys, we've never had
a rookie quarterback start a Super Bowl. Jaden Daniels is
one win away from being the first. And we've had
almost sixty Super Bowls in history. Who've had five different
rookies get to conference title games, all of them lost
(01:18:40):
the conference title games brock Purty recently Mark Sanchez when
he was a rookie. Meanwhile, if, as I mentioned earlier,
if the Rams can pull off the upset at Philly
in the snow tomorrow, a four seed's going to be
hosting a conference title game. The Rams did that just
a few years ago, and Kurt Warner's Cardinals did that
in two thousand and eight. Aside from that, those are
(01:19:02):
the only two instances where a four seed has hosted
the conference title game. Washington, by the way, and this
was the great stat of last weekend, fulfilled something that's
so rare in NFL history with a rookie starting quarterback
go through a whole game with no punts and no turnovers.
In NFL history, only three instances of that, all three
(01:19:23):
with Aiden Daniels this year, the playoff win last weekend
and twice early in this season. So Washington against somebody
for the NFC title next weekend, Kansas City against somebody
for the NFC title, AFC title next weekend.
Speaker 2 (01:19:38):
Thank you so much to Seger great recap of just
an insane night in Detroit as the Detroit Lions followed
the Washington Commanders. Of course, also Kansas City advances to
yet another AFC Championship game. But I'll tell you what,
j Martin, we got to start to look ahead to Sunday. Ravens, Bills, Eagles, Rams, Dion,
(01:20:00):
the Cowboys. That's out Sunday, but we gotta talk about
it anyway. Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (01:20:04):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:20:07):

Bernie Frado of The Bernie Frado Show follows us, and
my goodness, cannot wait to hear what Bernie has to
say about everything that happens Saturday, everything that's gonna happen Sunday. Bernie,
of course cover the Detroit Lions for years. He did
(01:20:50):
their pre and postgame, so you know he is gonna
have plenty to discuss as the Detroit Lions fall on
Saturday night final score in Detroit, Washington five Detroit thirty one.
The other early game, Kansas City beats Houston. Kansas City
headed to their seventh straight AFC Championship game. Kind of
(01:21:11):
crazy to think about.
Speaker 3 (01:21:12):
J Martin, you know, the.
Speaker 2 (01:21:13):
Guy that was calling the the NFC game, played Mahomes
in his first AFC Championship game and then of course
in a Super Bowl a few years later. So this
streak has been going on for a while. But I'll
tell you what, Jamar, this is what I want to do. Listen,
if you're just joining us. We spent the first two
hours really diving into Detroit Lions loss, what it means,
(01:21:35):
you know, the big picture ramifications for the organization as
they now could lose both coordinators. They obviously have question
marks with some of their roster spots and this and
that whatever, including Jared Goffu through three interceptions. If you
missed any of that, go back and download the podcast,
because I do want to start to look ahead to Sunday,
J mart and I want to start to look ahead
to just what is going to be an unbelievable game.
(01:21:59):
Bill's hosting the Baltimore Ravens, and obviously, look there's two games.
We'll get to Philly Los Angeles in a minute, but
Buffalo hosting Baltimore. Just, I mean, I don't even know
what there is to say, and I know that everybody
on this network all week long has been talking about
this game, but you know, I just as a football fan,
(01:22:21):
we were hoping for this as we kind of saw
how the bracket was gonna play itself out. And I'm
just so excited because you know, we've had Lamar in
the playoffs, We've had Josh Allen in the playoffs, but
there's always been you know, there was the year where
the Bills were really down, and then there's been a
few years where Lamar has been banged up, and there's
been a few years where the Ravens have disappointed where
(01:22:41):
the Bills have disappointed. Both of these teams playing in
an elite level, both of them obviously trying to exercise
the demons from previous years, get a chance at Kansas
City again next week, and obviously both hoping to get
to their first super Bowl in this era and regime.
For both Lamar Jackson and h.
Speaker 3 (01:23:01):
I mean, it's everything you want, the whole country is
gonna watch the game. It's I mean, it's we're all
going to be talking about it. And the only unfortunate
thing about it is both these quarterbacks need to win
the game, and the one that loses it, there's gonna
be a lot said about them, and I'm not sure
it's gonna be a fair fight, like because they could
(01:23:22):
both go out there and play their guts out, but
one of them still got to lose, and that becomes
a I mean, it's just a huge It's just the
reality of sports. Only one guy is gonna be able
to win, and you look at it, your guess is
as good as mine. Honestly, I think Buffalo might be
the best team, but I think the most frightening might
(01:23:45):
be Baltimore when it comes to their offense. I think
I trust John Harball more than I trust Sean McDermott.
But I think the question that everybody wants to try
and find the answer to is to which quarterback is
this game more important? And again, I think you could
sell me on either argument. And I don't even know
(01:24:08):
who the MVP is going to be at this stage.
Based on the all pro voting, it could be Lamar. Again,
if it's not him, it will be Josh Allen, and
it would have been Allen for me this year. But
I'm not going to argue if it goes to Lamar
Jackson either. Allen is playing the best of his career
right now. Lamar might be also, But Lamar's also got
that safety blanket in Derrick Henry where it's not all
(01:24:31):
on his back the way it has been in the past.
So it just feels like to me that the team
that makes fewer mistakes, it's gonna sound like analysis. It's
that you could get at a dime store somewhere, But
the team that makes fewer mistakes is gonna win. I
mean we even saw that against I mean, look, the
Commanders Lions games a little bit different, but they had
(01:24:51):
the Lions turned the ball over five times. You're just
not gonna win turn the ball over five times. If
they both go on a spotless resume. Let's say that
the quarterbacks just out of their minds. They both have
like one twenty plus passer ratings and everything happens and
you don't see any fumbles from Cook or Derrick Henry
or whatever like that. It's just gonna turn on either
(01:25:12):
a special team's play or who's got the ball last.
Speaker 2 (01:25:16):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:25:17):
I just I'm so excited to watch the game, and
I have absolutely no real feeling that I am particularly
convicted by one way or the other. I think I
will lean Buffalo, but I'm not even sure that I
can say that out loud. But without changing it, before
i even get to the period in the sentence.
Speaker 2 (01:25:40):
I'll say a couple of things stand out leading into
this game. Is that one, I do hope that, barring
just an abomination of a performance by one of them,
that the lead of the thing is not Oh that
this guy sucks or this guy can't win the big
one or whatever. I understand that, by the way, I
understand it, But sometimes you got to talk about the
(01:26:01):
losing team and the losing star player, because we just
did it for two hours with the Detroit Lions. So
I'm not saying that whoever loses is immune to criticism,
and we'll see how the game actually plays out before
make any sweeping judgments. But listen, this is sports. Only
one team can raise that trophy at the end of
the year, and one of these teams is not going
to make it to Kansas City next week. So that's
(01:26:23):
first second of all, I totally agree with you in
terms of just I don't know how you can feel
good picking either side. Both teams are obviously playing at
such an elite level.
Speaker 8 (01:26:37):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:26:37):
The Bills, of course, did lose that week's eighteen game
to the Patriots. That meant absolutely nothing. But also before that,
they were on what they had won at that point.
Let's see here ten of their previous eleven games, so
they were playing well. Baltimore's playing really well. As far
(01:26:58):
as which quarterback needs it more, I'll give you my opinion, Jmartin,
I'll toss it back to you. I think either one
is gonna face criticism, maybe unfairly after the game. I
do kind of think it's I do think kind of
think it's Lamar. We've seen Josh Allen go toe for
toe with Patrick Mahomes. They led them at the half.
(01:27:20):
Was it last year? I guess it was last year? Yeah,
in the in this round, they led Kansas City at
the half. We all remember the thirteen second game when
they had the lead with thirteen seconds to go. I
don't I think it's gonna be again, not knowing how
the game plays out, I think if Buffalo does not win,
(01:27:40):
I think it will be more an indictment on maybe
the future of Sean McDermott. Then it will be Josh
Allen's ability to go head to head with the elite
quarterbacks in this league with Lamar Jackson. And I know
I've said it a million times because he actually caught
me saying it again to lead the show when we
were talking to Troy Washington with Lamar Jackson, I think
(01:28:02):
some of last year should fall on the play calling
and the coordinator, and it felt like they panicked when
they fell behind early. But I'll also say I do
think if he loses, I do think it becomes a
bigger question of okay man, this is now year five,
year six of this couldn't get past Patrick Mahomes last year,
couldn't get past Josh Allen. This year, what is you know,
(01:28:24):
what is Lamar Jackson in the postseason, So we'll see
again tough to say without knowing who actually gets to win.
I think that that and by the way, the other
thing that you and I have talked about a million times,
and I think it's important as well, got Lamar a
lot of help in the in the offseason. You know,
got him Derrick Henry. Josh Allen, on the other hand,
(01:28:45):
lost a couple of star players, headlined by Stefan Diggs,
some guys on defense. This was the year that his
contract really kicked in and they had to make some
tough decisions. So I think there's probably a little bit
more uh press. It's weird. I think I've said this.
I think there's more pressure on Lamar individually, but probably
the Buffalo Bills as an organization.
Speaker 3 (01:29:05):
Yeah, okay, I mean I agree with all of that.
The only thing I actually don't know if this is
in the favor of Lamar or against Lamar. But Lamar
is a two time MVP. Josh Allen's a zero time MVP,
so he has no real accolades to go with everything
that we've seen him do.
Speaker 2 (01:29:25):
So if they get beat again, who did you argue
that makes it worse though?
Speaker 3 (01:29:28):
Well, see that's what I'm saying, Like, I think you
can make this argument either way, and I'm not sure
if this plays two or against one or the other. Like,
I think what you're saying is right basically, But if
Allen gets beat again, then that means he still doesn't
hold the MVPs yet and he still hasn't advanced to
a Super Bowl in his career. Lamar would still have
(01:29:51):
to see the Chiefs next week, but this would be
beating a guy that might be the front runner for
the MVP after already winning two MVPs and advancing to
a conference championship game for the second scutive year or whatever.
So I think that that's part of it. I think
that Lamar already has achieved more. His accolades are already there,
his trophies are already on the wall in a way
(01:30:12):
that Josh Allens aren't. So we just keep saying Josh
Allen's good because we have eyes and we understand how
good he is. But at the same time, he hasn't
done anything really as of yet, so I don't Again,
I don't know if that means that there's more on Lamar,
because you've got to eventually win in the playoffs to
validate all of what you've already been given in terms
(01:30:35):
of awards and all that. So I don't know if
I made or broke the case for either guy. Again,
I think that we're both of the same mind, and
I think most people are this way. I just so
both guys go out and fall out and it comes
down to the final possession so that you can feel
good about everything that you saw and it can just
go down as one of those iconic performances, iconic games
(01:30:56):
where one team had to lose. If we get Bill's
Chiefs Volume two here with Ravens Bills, I think that'll
be an all time classic performance. What I would rather
not see from either guy is a bad day. Sure,
I really don't want that. I don't want that for them,
and I don't want it for the bottom feeders in
the industry that will use it to try and bury
(01:31:18):
one of these guys, because I think it's complete garbage.
Speaker 2 (01:31:21):
Well, make our official picked in the show. But let's
switch gears. Let's talk about the other game. Obviously, Los
Angeles Rams coming off the Monday night winds, so a
little bit of a short week. Philly obviously played on
Sunday instead of Monday. But the game is in Philly.
They're expecting potential snow. By the way, should mention the
weather in Buffalo is not going to be much better,
(01:31:42):
but in Philly they could have snow. But they are
hosting the Los Angeles Rams. Of course, these two teams
played earlier in the year, kind of like the Saquon
Barkley coming out party. I think that was really the
game that it was like, Oh, this guy should probably
be in consideration for MVP. Two rushing touchdowns of seventy
plus yards in that game, and I'll tell you, I'm
(01:32:06):
fascinated by this game. And I'm curious too. Eagles didn't
really play their best football last week as Jalen Hurts
is still trying to come back from injury. The Rams,
on the other hand, played about as well as you can.
So I think it becomes an interesting conversation, kind of
like what you were just saying, Jason. You could look
at it either way. You were talking about Lamar versus
Josh Allen, I'll talk about it Eagles versus Rams.
Speaker 3 (01:32:28):
You could look at it.
Speaker 2 (01:32:28):
And say, well, well, you know, Eagles coming off a
bad performance, Rams looked awesome. That's bad news for the Eagles.
You could also say that Rams can't really play much better.
Eagles certainly can. Maybe that is advantage Philly in Philly.
What are your thoughts on this one?
Speaker 3 (01:32:44):
So to the weather real quick in Buffalo, It's going
to be nineteen degrees, but it feels like temperature of
who knows what, and then thirty four with almost guaranteed
snow happening any other game. Let me just be real
about this. I think the Rams are playing better football
right now than the Eagles, but I don't think they
can win in this environment. This RAMS team going into
(01:33:06):
that cold temperature, I just don't think that's a recipe
for success. I do not think this Rams team is
built to go in there and do their thing in
that kind of weather. I'm not saying they're soft, because
I no way do I believe that they are. I
just think it's a tall order to go into cold, cold,
cold in January and be able to deal with that
(01:33:27):
Eagles defense that I think becomes the biggest difference. And
if it does get into a ground game, this can
be a seguon Barkley all day kind of day where
they're not throwing it very much, which they don't really
want to do anyway. Aj Brown can continue reading self
help books on the sidelines if need be, but Barkley
(01:33:49):
can go over one hundred easy, the defense can grab
a couple of turnovers. I just feel like this is
the perfect recipe for an Eagles win. If the weather
we're different, If it was a little bit more of
a mild day and all those things. I might feel
differently right now, because I do think that the Rams
are trending in better in a better position than the
Eagles are in terms of the football that I've seen
(01:34:11):
them both play over the last month. But I just
think it's the wrong matchup at the wrong time, in
the wrong city with the wrong climate.
Speaker 2 (01:34:19):
I think that's all totally fair. I think the big
thing that stands out to me, you know, the Rams
defensive line was so good last game. I think the
what was it, ten tackles for lost nine sacks and
obviously gets Philly. You're just not gonna be able to
do that. No, and so again we'll save our picks
for the end of the show. But I think that's
(01:34:40):
gonna be the X factor. Philly obviously has a much
much better offensive line than the Minnesota Vikings. By the way, Jamart,
this is the part that sucks about a three hour show.
I got so many Sam Darnold takes, and I'm just
gonna I'm probably gonna have to take them to the
grave because I don't think we're gonna get to them today.
Because I don't want to discredit the Rams. They're the
ones that advanced. But yeah, I got some Sam Donald takes.
Speaker 3 (01:35:01):
So Donald made I think Donald made the offseason a
lot easier for the Vikings.
Speaker 2 (01:35:06):
He did his last two games, all I'll say. And
I think we talked about this in the lead up.
I think we might have even talked about it in
the lead up to the Lions game, but certainly in
the lead up to the Rams game. You look at
that hot streak that they went on the back end
of the year. Went over the Colts, went over the Jags,
went over the Titans, two wins over the Bears, went
(01:35:27):
over the Falcons, and what ultimately was the second to
last start of Kirk Cousins time, probably in Atlanta, you know,
and then even went over the Packers. Doesn't look quite
as good after what happened with the Packers the last
few weeks, So you.
Speaker 3 (01:35:41):
Know what, it kind of feels like just a little bit.
I'm not saying to this because they're a really talented team, right,
that Giants team that made the playoffs that ended that
resulted in Daniel Jones getting money, yeah, and setting that
franchise back and inevitably leading to Saquon Barkley. Now now
is the Philadelphia Eagle that Giants team that we all thought,
(01:36:02):
at least this show all thought, Yeah, that's not legit, Like,
that's not coming back that way again next year. I
think the Vikings are in a much better position. But
I think you have the same danger of the Daniel
Jones effect right now that you need to dodge.
Speaker 2 (01:36:17):
So I agree with that one hundred percent. Well, now
that we're talking Donald, we can talk it really quick.
Of course, the Vikings lose in the divisional round to
the Los Angeles Rams. You know, I'll just say really quick.
Is I think it works kind of both ways. And
what I think is, first of all, I know that
there is simply go let's say he doesn't stay in Minnesota.
(01:36:38):
I understand that there is going to be the supply
and demand of teams that need quarterbacks versus teams the
difference between supplying demand of teams that are going to
need quarterbacks versus the quarterbacks that are available. We know
it's a week draft. Then you're talking about an old
Kirk Cousins, maybe at old Aaron Rodgers. I understand Sam
(01:36:59):
darn doesn't look terrible relative to the competition, but I
would have to sit there and say, you know, if
you can't do it with Kevin. When I say do it,
I mean when it win beyond a bunch of regular
season games, I mean the biggest games of the year.
He was not good. You can't do it with Kevin
O'Connell calling plays, Justin Jefferson at wide receiver, a good
run game. I just have doubts that you can pretty
(01:37:22):
much do it anywhere. Like if I'm the Raiders and
I'm picking seventh and I'm not gonna get Shadora kim Ward,
let's work under that assumption. It's like, I don't know
that I feel great, you know, signing Sam Darnold. So
that's one. Then to the reverse of it is, you
know all of this like three or four weeks ago, Well,
you can't hit it over to JJ McCarthy. Now, it's like,
I don't know JJ McCarthy with Justin Jefferson, with Kevin
(01:37:46):
O'Connell callen plays, I don't know. I mean, I think
I think they're still pretty good team.
Speaker 3 (01:37:50):
Next year, you know, yeah, I mean I agree. I mean,
I don't know what McCarthy's going to be as a pro.
We'll find out. But I know what Kevin O'Connell has
said about him. I do think that there's no reason
to think you don't put him out there and find
out like that. If you believe he's the guy, go
ahead and do it now. Like like to what your
point about the Raiders, I mean, are the Browns going
(01:38:10):
to draft another quarterback at this stage? I don't know.
Are they going to bring in a Sam Donald? They could,
because Sam Donald would advance them a little bit and
help them and probably wouldn't cost a ton of money.
Some team will do that, some team that wants to
get better but isn't able to get to the top
or doesn't have the quarterback, so you bring in that guy,
and maybe he's a bridge for a year or two
(01:38:32):
who has built a little bit of confidence. But I
do think you're right, you better have a whole lot
around him, because even with all of that, and you
even mentioned Addison Hawkinson and some of these other weapons
that he has on top of everything else, a solid
defense and Brian Flores who probably won't even be there
next year. You know, all of that, he still came
(01:38:55):
up small in those big moments, and I'm not sure
he's built for him I think he might have been
coming out of colleg but I think there was a
lot of damage done to his psyche early on with
the Jets, and so those tendencies show back up when
he's pressured or when he faces stress.
Speaker 2 (01:39:11):
There's no doubt about it. Vikings lose, Rams advanced, Rams
and Eagles play the early game on Sunday, and then
of course the late one, six thirty Eastern, the one
we're all waiting for. Baltimore traveling to Buffalo Fox Sports
Radio where towards Jason Martin broadcasting live from the tyreck
dot Com studios. Jmart will come back, and I'll tell
you what. We gotta talk a little Dallas Cowboys. I
(01:39:35):
don't really know what the heck's going on there. They
don't have a coach. I mean, that's another one. Well,
we need more than three hours, Bernie Fratto, if you
want to call out sick for the first hour, we
got about two hours left to content in us. Easy,
so Bernie's although I.
Speaker 3 (01:39:50):
Do want to hear Bernie on the Lions.
Speaker 2 (01:39:52):
I do too, Bernie.
Speaker 3 (01:39:53):
I hope he's gonna lead there. I really want to
hear that conversation.
Speaker 2 (01:39:56):
Well, he will definitely lead there. Bernie will be on
thirty nine minut it's from now. We got a lot
to get into in thirty nine minutes, including what the
heck is going on with this Cowboys coaching search and
jmart the part that I want to talk about, why
would anyone want this job? We'll discuss that next Fox
Sports Radio. Welcome back everybody. Fox Sports Radio er Tors
(01:40:19):
Jason Martin broadcasting live from thety rack dot com studios.
Shortly after the show, our podcast will be going up.
We had a lot on the game in Detroit, the
Lions falling to the Washington Commanders by two touchdowns in
it just a awful, awful, awful loss for a Lions fan,
(01:40:39):
thrilling if you're a Washington Commanders fan. Forty five thirty
one is the final score. But as I said, it's
all on the podcast. If you missed any of today's show,
be sure to check out the podcast to search Fox
Sports Ready wherever you get your podcasts, and also be
sure to follow, rate and review. Again, just search Fox
Sports Radio wherever you get your podcasts and you'll see
this show post it after we get off air.
Speaker 3 (01:40:59):
So JM.
Speaker 2 (01:41:00):
We got to spend a few minutes talking about this
situation in Dallas. It's just such a debacle. It's such
a debacle. We've spent so much time talking about this organization,
everything that has gone on. Well, the season ends a
few weeks ago, they bring you know, Mike McCarthy gets
(01:41:22):
to the finish line with no contract. Then they drag
it out negotiating with him. Are they gonna bring him back?
Speaker 3 (01:41:28):
Are they not?
Speaker 2 (01:41:29):
They can't agree to terms. He walks he may be
a head coach next year. He might not be because
the Bears feels like the obvious spot and they want
to interview every single human being under the sun, and
it's getting embarrassing over there. But I bring it up
because they completely mishandle this thing, and really I think
that to me, there's two different cowboys conversations. There is
(01:41:51):
the Dion conversation, which I certainly think picked up steam
over the course of the week. If you believe, if
you don't believe, whatever, but you know, we what what
was it? Edward or reporting basically that Dion would accept
the job if offered. My whole thing is this, and
I know Kellen Moore potentially could be in play there
as well. My whole thing is I almost feel like
(01:42:15):
you might have to seriously pursue Dion because I don't
know what kind of coach would want this job.
Speaker 7 (01:42:21):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:42:22):
I understand there's only thirty two of these things and whatever,
but the counterpoint is you're stuck with Dak, you have
no cap flexibility. Jerry's just off his rocker at this point.
I guess what I want to start by asking you
putting Deanna side, is this an attractive job? Because to me,
(01:42:43):
if you have options, I just don't know why you
would take this. And then the counterpoint to that is
the people that don't have options are probably gonna be
worse candidates than Mike McCarthy. I don't think it's a
good job, and I think anybody that has options I
would not take it. What are your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (01:42:59):
Would you like to be the Lakers head coach? If
Lebron James wasn't a Laker, if he was not part
of the franchise, and really probably even Anthony Davis might
not be there either, because it's still the franchise, rights
still the Dallas Cowboys. You know, it's different in terms
of how it's talked about, how much coverage it gets,
all of that kind of thing, but it's a disaster
(01:43:24):
waiting to happen. Also, because your quarterback situation is what
it is. It's not bad, but it's always going to
be over criticized. Like everyone that's ever played quarterback. There
for the most part, you've got some personality, certainly in
the locker room. But the biggest problem is the problem
(01:43:44):
that's always been there, and that's the owner. Because the
owner wants to be the star, and it gets in
the way of the success of the team. The wins
and losses matter, but I think there's a seiling to that,
there's a win loss that that it can't rise to
be more than the ego of the owner. I've heard
(01:44:05):
before about how much he wants to win and all
this other kind of stuff. I just if that's the case,
then he needs to surround himself with some realists as
opposed to yes men. He's to surround himself with people
that will say, well, if you want to win, Jerry,
stop doing your weekly radio show and recede into the
background and let the football team do its thing. And
(01:44:26):
that is where I think some of this Dion talk
comes from. Because Dion is a big enough supernova of
his own, that he will take up a lot of
that oxygen. I just think that's a powder keg. Though,
Like I just I agree with you. By the way,
I don't think it's a particularly good job that you
would want at this point either, because it just turns
(01:44:47):
into more of the national inquirer than something with respect.
You're always trying to overcome so much of a circus
there and an environment that it's just not conducive. It's
probably stressful, it's thankless in many respects. You're never going
to be good enough, you know. I mean, I just
and if I'm Dion, I I just don't understand the
(01:45:11):
number of people that have come out and tried to
say this week on television, radio, wherever, that Dion's the
guy for this job. I'm like, really like him and
Jerry Jones coexisting and Dion coaching this team in the
NFL at this point in time, when they already had
(01:45:32):
Dak Prescott in his situation, and he's already talked about
how he, you know, wants to coach his sons and
all this other kind of stuff. It just seems like,
all right, And I've heard some other I think I've
heard some people on this network say this this week,
and I agree, Like do you want to win a
super Bowl or do you want to be a celebrity,
because I don't know that you can do both. And
I'm not asking this to Dion Sanders. I'm asking this
(01:45:54):
to Jerry Jones like that that to me, his involvement
and interstageness is the biggest problem with the Dallas Cowboys,
and it's something that until that gets fixed, I don't
want any part of that job.
Speaker 2 (01:46:09):
So a couple of things. One, so first of all,
I agree with that, and I don't think this is
gonna sound so cruel. I don't think it gets fixed
until Jerry Jones is I mean, how else do we
say it no longer with us? I mean, I don't,
you know. And it's funny. I've used this analogy or
this story before. But my nephew diehard Cowboys fan, and
(01:46:33):
you know, we used to text all the time. Now
we don't. But I saw him, I think it was
right before the Dak injury and he just said I've
given up hope, like he you know, because I thought
it was, you know, the typical arc of a football fan.
I talked myself into it in the preseason whatever, blah blah.
He's like, this organization is just stuck in the it's
(01:46:53):
never going to get better. And I have an incredible
stat that Michael Mahailich just sent us on Twitter, and
I appreciate you doing it, Jymart. Do you realize this
is gonna sound crazy, but it is true. Every single
other team in the NFC has made the NFC Championship
(01:47:15):
Game at least once since two thoy ten. The Chicago
Bears made the NFC Championship Game in twenty ten, the
Carolina Panthers in twenty fifteen, the Arizona Cardinals in twenty fifteen.
The New Orleans Saints, who are Debaco right now played
for an NFC title as recently as twenty eighteen. The
(01:47:38):
Dallas Cowboys have not made an NFC championship game since
nineteen ninety five. They have been fifteen years longer than
the second worst team in the NFC in terms of
just making it to a conference championship game. Now, the
obviously won a Super Bowl that year, but ninety five
is a long time ago. We're getting to the point
where there's some people with gray hair that aren't old
enough to remember when when the Dallas Cowboys last made
(01:48:00):
an NFC championship game. So to me, it's a one
hundred percent Jerry thing. And on the one hand, I
agree with you that are you trying to you know,
have a reality show or you try to be whatever.
My counter to that, though, is, again, what other real
options do you have? Like, doesn't seem like Ben Johnson
(01:48:21):
wants this job, doesn't seem like whoever else you DM,
Mike Frabole is off the table, Bill Belichick is coaching
in college, like and I was just talking to producer
Ian about this. This thing has been so screwed up
from the beginning, like and again it speaks to the dysfunction.
I don't want to say if the Cowboys because they
do a lot of things, well, the dysfunction of ownership
(01:48:42):
with Jerry Jones, because you come into the year with
Mike McCarthy. Uh, it's not even on the hot seat.
He didn't have a contract beyond this year, and you
start the season three and seven. I mean you have
to get rid of him at that point you know
you're not bringing him back. You keep him around long
(01:49:03):
enough for him to win a few games, you keep
him through the final week of the regular season and
then you start negotiations. So let's work under the assumption
that Mike Frable would have been interested in the job.
I don't think he would have. Certainly, it seems like
behind the scenes he was working for that Patriot's job.
But whatever, he's not available because it took too long.
Bill Belichick took another job because you took too long
(01:49:25):
if you believe that he was a legitimate candidate. And
so now I just I don't even know what they do.
And again, I think the Dion thing is only realistic
because I don't know who else is going to want
this job, because if you have options, again, if you're
Aaron Glenn, if you're Ben Johnson, why do you want
(01:49:47):
this place where you have a sixty million dollars a
year quarterback in eighty four year old head coach owner
who's not gonna stop doing press conferences. We gotta get
to disagre j Mar, But let's put a ball on this.
Any last thoughts on just this situation, because I think
Dion is actually a metaphor for I don't know why
anybody would watch this job because of Jerry.
Speaker 3 (01:50:06):
I mean, I think I think Kellen Moore is going
to be the guy. But if it's not, I understand.
Speaker 2 (01:50:11):
Is he a candidate for any other job?
Speaker 8 (01:50:13):
Though?
Speaker 2 (01:50:13):
I mean, has he in I'm not mefix, That's what
I'm saying. That's what I'm saying. Maybe he's done interviews
and I missed it. I don't think he's a candidate
anywhere else, And he wouldn't be a candidate if he
hadn't already been an offensive coordinator. Who oh, by the way,
you ran out to let Mike McCarthy call play, so
j Mart, I cut you off. I apologize.
Speaker 3 (01:50:31):
Well, I mean, I don't know, I don't know that
it's that. I mean, I think he's in some of
the odds for some of the other teams and stuff.
But I think he was always tied to the Cowboys
because of that, kind of similar to Vary bol with
the Patriots, not quite as certainly, not as he hadn't
he wasn't tied to him quite as long, certainly, and
didn't play the same role with them. But I just
feel like Kellen Moore in the offense, I think he
(01:50:54):
probably would have a lot of respect for Dak. He
understands that division. Ceedee, Lamb, you know he's working with
wide receivers, they are dynamic with what he's done in Philadelphia.
I think that would make a lot of sense. But
everything else that you're saying is one thousand percent right,
and I don't understand any of how they've gone about it.
I think I got it wrong when I made that
(01:51:15):
Lakers analogy. I think the better analogies the Knicks until
last year, because the Knicks were just that again, they
were an IT franchise, but they hadn't done anything in ages,
but they were good in the nineties and since that
point in time, it just been like it didn't matter.
You bring into Carmelo Anthony, they still weren't able to win.
You draft Kristaps Porzingis, they still weren't able to win.
(01:51:35):
They went through phil they even had Phil Jackson there,
and they still, you know, it still wasn't gonna work again.
And you know, they've had all these kinds of things
and they finally have seemingly struck gold because they found
the right stuff. So I think that's part of it there.
But yeah, there's definitely I think Kellen Moore will be
the guy personally. The Dion thing would be great for
(01:51:56):
our content I just think that that's a powder keg
with him, and I don't think those two egos co exist.
Speaker 2 (01:52:01):
Well, tell you what, we are running short on time.
Let's toss it right over the news desk, Steve de Sager,
what is trending at this hour?
Speaker 6 (01:52:08):
I did read that Kellen Moore today interviewed with the
Saints Spidery.
Speaker 2 (01:52:11):
Yeah, I thought I did see a headline where he
interviewed somewhere.
Speaker 3 (01:52:13):
OK.
Speaker 6 (01:52:13):
But problem with Jerry Jones, he needs to fire his
GM and that's never gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (01:52:18):
Because Chah, that's a problem.
Speaker 6 (01:52:20):
But Troy Aikman's Cowboys early to mid nineties made the
NFC Championship four years in a row, and they haven't
made it back since Washington had not made the conference
title game since the nineteen ninety one season.
Speaker 2 (01:52:33):
They're going.
Speaker 6 (01:52:34):
These Commanders have won seven in a row. This year's
Washington team was seven and five as of Thanksgiving. Hasn't
lost since the Commander's win at top seeded Detroit tonight
forty five thirty one, Jade and Daniels two hundred and
ninety nine yards passing in two scores. Lions had over
five hundred yards of offense had thirty first downs in
twenty six minutes time of possession, but Detroit with five turnovers,
(01:52:57):
four by quarterback Jared Goff. Washington meanwhile no turnovers, took
no sacks, and the Commander scored four touchdowns in the
second quarter, including a pick six forty five thirty one.
The final Detroit after a fifteen and two regular season,
is out Kansas City, now sixteen and two. They advanced
to the AFC Title Game for the seventh straight year
(01:53:17):
after eliminating Houston today twenty three to fourteen. The Texans
missed an extra point try, missed a field goal attempt
into the win, had another field goal attempt block. Chiefs
defense had eight sacks, three by George car loftis temperature
about twenty degrees for that game. Travis Kelcey seven catches
one hundred and seventeen yards in a score, but Casey
had only ninety five other yards in this game three
(01:53:39):
short field goals from Harrison Butker. A reminder for tomorrow,
the Ravens had listed wide receiver Za Flowers is doubtful
for Sunday at Buffalo due to his knee injury. He
missed another practice on Friday, he missed their wild card
game last weekend. Temperature in Buffalo due to be under
twenty degrees. That's a six to thirty pm Eastern start.
Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, of course, was voted All Pro
(01:54:00):
ahead of Josh Allen thirty votes to eighteen. Recently snow
in the forecast in Philadelphia. Eagles will host the Rams
in a divisional playoffs Sunday, three pm Eastern time. Eagles
linebacker Nakobe Dean is out for the postseason due to
a torn pateeller tendon. The falcons new defensive coordinator is
Jeff Ulbrick. Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian got an extension
(01:54:21):
through twenty thirty one. NBA Atlanta one at Boston in overtime.
College hoops number one Auburn and a winner at Georgia
seventy to sixty eight. Tonight, Santa Clara won at number
sixteen Gonzaga one oh three ninety nine. Crayton got to
win at fourteenth ranked Yukon sixty eight sixty three. Connecticut
had one twenty eight straight at home over the last
two years.
Speaker 2 (01:54:41):
Back to you very controversial quality into that game, but that's.
Speaker 3 (01:54:45):
Neither that was con to that game. We're gonna get
an update on that at some point.
Speaker 2 (01:54:48):
Listen, we gotta get the break. But I'll say, abominable
call final seconds of the game Yukon. It was a
clear foul up three situation for Creighton and they were
just showing the replay on Sports Center. So this isn't
Tours talking out of as you know what the refs anticipated.
The call on the floor Hassandi Area was in the
(01:55:10):
act of shooting, should have been for three free throws.
Doesn't guarantee they would have won the game. They have issues,
but yes they lose to creating on a very controversial
Fox Sports Radio ertors Jason Martin, broadcasting live from the

football topic under the sun except for one Ohio state,
Notre Dame. We'll make our picks next.
Speaker 1 (01:55:30):
Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (01:55:33):
Welcome back, everybody. Fox Sports Radio, Aer Torris, Jason Martin,
broadcasting live from the tyreck dot Com studios. We are
on till two am Eastern, ten minutes from now. Bernie
Fratto of The Bernie Fratto Show will follow us, and
as we told you, a minute ago. Make sure to
download the podcast wherever you get podcasts. A lot of
reaction to Lions Commanders as well as Kansas City and
(01:55:55):
Washington Jamart really quick, we didn't talk to college football playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:56:01):
Totally didn't realize that we were at the end of
the show and had not even talked about the thing
we talk about more than anything else.
Speaker 4 (01:56:07):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:56:08):
I know, I was telling Ian this, listen. I know
it's not perfect. I think we got to figure out
a way, and there's a very easy solution. We got
to start the playoff earlier, and let me ask you
really quick, before we make our pick, we would be
talking about it no matter what, because we both love
college football. This is our national post game show here
on Fox Sports Radio. But I feel like in the
(01:56:29):
sports discourse, like I don't feel like people are talking
about this. Am I am I crazy on that? Or
do you feel pretty confident that it just feels like
it's gotten a little lost in the shuffles we get
deeper in the NFL playoffs.
Speaker 3 (01:56:40):
I mean, I think that's right. I don't think there's
any way around it. I don't It's not that this
game is not going to be paid attention to talked
about enjoyed on Monday. It's going to do very well.
Hopefully it's going to be a great game. But you
get swallowed up by the NFL. You just do. When
the NFL playoffs start happening, that just overtakes everything else.
(01:57:00):
There's just not enough oxygen in the room for everything.
You do. Feel like this college football season needs to
find a way to end in the first week of January.
Like it's just it's going too deep. It's kind of
like baseball still trying to be as relevant once football starts.
Football is just it's a different animal, and pro football
in America, it's just hard to get national airtime. I mean,
(01:57:24):
we give it more than just about anybody, but it's
hard to get national airtime right now because the NFL
is going to soak up everything that's out there. There's
going to be storylines for all four of these games,
and then the scraps turn out to be Notre Dame
Ohio State, and that's that's stinks, honestly. They deserve more.
Speaker 2 (01:57:41):
Yeah, really quick, you know, I think I hope we
get to a point where maybe we eliminate those conference
championship games and the regular season a week earlier, we
don't need the conference championship games, and then started earlier
and finish it earlier because I agree have I think
the way it was New Year's even New Year's Day,
semi finals championship a week really quickly, what is your
(01:58:02):
pick for the game, And we haven't made our NFL
picks either, So go ahead, give me your quick pick
on Ohio State Notre Dame. We'll get to our picks
on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (01:58:08):
Man, I would love to pick Notre Dame. I think
I've got to go with Ohio State just the talent
and the way that they have played throughout this postseason run.
I love Marcus Freeman and I would love to see
them win. Quite frankly, I just don't know that they're
going to. I will say this though, Jeremiah Smith gave
them some bulletin board material. Very confident young man deserves
(01:58:29):
to be. He's going to be an absolute superstar on
the next level. He's already a superstar. But he said
he can't wait to put on a show against Notre
Dame on Monday night. There's no question that is all
over the Notre Dame locker room for them to see.
Saying that he knows they play a lot of man
coverage and he will own them. Okay, I'm not saying
(01:58:52):
he won't, but let's pay attention to that on Monday.
But I do have Ohio State winning Notre.
Speaker 2 (01:58:57):
Dame second in college football and turnovers. The only I
see Nor Dame winning the game is if Will Howard
throws the ball away. I'm gonna pick Ohio State twenty
four to ten really quickly. Early game. Eagles, Rams.
Speaker 3 (01:59:10):
What he got, Eagles, the weather, the circumstances. I just
look at that Rams team and I cannot see them,
you know, seeing their own breath and beating the Eagles
in Philly. So I like Philly.
Speaker 2 (01:59:19):
I think that's a good way to put it. I
have the Eagles winning as well. Bill's Ravens. I know
you were undecided forty five minutes ago. I need an answer.
We only got thirty seconds left.
Speaker 7 (01:59:28):
Go.
Speaker 3 (01:59:29):
I'm so torn. I don't even know what to say
right now. I've got to pick a team. I've got
to pick some. I'm picking Baltimore. Oh, I'm picking Baltimore.
I think Derek Henry makes the difference in the cold
because I just don't think anybody wants to tackle him tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (01:59:43):
I will take the bills. We gotta get out of here.
Thank the crew, Mary mack Ian for Steve de Seger
