fast and furious right now, about a third of the
way through the sixth round. And reunited today with the one,
the only, mister Jeff Schwartz. Jeff, how are you today?

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Man?

Speaker 3 (00:36):
I am fantastic. I am glad to be here. Is
a wonderful day to talk football. Basketball. Also the organ
spring game sticking off soon. Let'll get some college football today. Adam,
there's not really comfortable we'll talk about, but if you
want to, we can do that. But I just love
you the build up, right, the build up for the draft,
and that just happens, and this hectic three day period

(00:57):
where there's so much hope. Right, this is the beginning
of every NFL season. It's the sport that gives you
the most hope, right, Look, at baseball right now, we're
both baseball fans. Not a lot of hope around a
lot of teams in baseball around even in one month
in Okay, there's a lot of hope.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Well not in Oakland for sure. What yeah, not in Oakland.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
No, well, not in Oakland. There's no hope for Oakland
at all and anything any sport because they don't keeping
any of their other teams ever. But football does hope, man,
And you can go through Twitter and social media and
fan bases. Man, they're hopeful that players drafted either Thursday,
Friday or even today are the missing piece that gets
them to the playoffs or gets them to the super Bowl.

(01:37):
And that's what makes the draft so much fun.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
No doubt about that.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
And then thing about the NFL draft over the years,
this is one thing I observe watching the NFL draft
now as opposed to when I worked in the NFL
way back in the nineteen eighties, the Stone age, when
you used to have can you believe twelve rounds to
the draft? But I don't remember everyone applodding after a pick.
I mean, you talk about playing for the cameras. I've

(02:03):
always wondered this about the draft itself. I mean, the
idea of grading drafts or evaluating how teams did in
a draft, to me is ridiculous. And I remember a
partner and I way back in the day. This happened
in nineteen ninety eight, the year that the Chargers moved
up to the second pick in the draft to take
Ryan Leaf, and the following day and the local newspapers

(02:24):
they were given an A plus A plus for that draft.
A year later, I'm like, you want to reevaluate that great?
So we started looking at drafts three years in reverse,
you know, like three years after the draft, now, let's
start grading the drafts. I mean, there can still be
some breakout players, but after three years you have a
pretty good idea how a draft class is actually panned

(02:46):
out for that team. So I'm not going to sit
here and try to pretend that this team had a
great draft or this team had a subpar draft. I
guess the only way, really, Jeff, to evaluate a draft,
if you're a so called draft expert, is did they
address needs going into the draft. If they needed a quarterback,
if they needed offensive line help, if they need whatever

(03:06):
the need was. Yea, now they may have picked the
wrong guy. But they go after the right positions to
start to fill the needs, and then that, to me
at this point is the only way to evaluate what's
currently going on in this year's draft.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah. Look, obviously draft grades today are and look, I
actually read all the draft grade articles. I love them.
Actually does a good job of just recapping what happened
in the draft. I think after you get past day two,
the draft recap grades are kind of like Matt like, whatever,
he's grade day three, right, I mean rounds four through seven,

(03:44):
good luck on that. I think what a lot of
people do is that you know, they have their big
boards right now. The people that we trust to put
together these big boards in the media, and there are
a lot of people that you should trust, Dane Jeremiah,
Dan Brugler, Matt Miller, there's a lot of guys that
you should trust to put these together, right, And you know,
they go off of basically, Okay, if I have a
guy who is fifty on my big board and you

(04:05):
draft him twenty third, well, okay, that's not great value.
That's a c draft pick, right Or Or if a
guy I have at fifty and you draft him at
seventy eight, that's that's an eight, right. You You've drafted
a player that is great and much you know, much lower,
basically much higher than where you drafted them. Okay, that's
I think how people grade drafts now as they go

(04:25):
off of kind of the big board. But team needs
your point is very important to this discussion, but also
like a philosophy, right, I think you're seeing it with
the better teams in the NFL that just seem to
draft the most important positions each year and just kind
of get it right right the Eagles, Right, The Eagles

(04:46):
just keep getting those defense and offensive lignement right every year,
like just you know, everyone's drafted running backs in the
first round. Eagles are drafting off at the defensive linemen,
you know, like they're just getting better at the positions
it seem to matter the most in the postseason and
it continues to be that way every year for lat
of teams you talk about team needs. The Chiefs. I'm
the Chiefs fan obviously for those who are new to

(05:08):
Jeff Schwartz Chiefs fan, my brother played there. I played there.
The Chiefs had three needs for the most part, pass rush,
wide receiver, tackle. Get what they drafted in the first
three picks of the draft. Pass rush, wide receiver, right tackle,
right boom boom boom. Done Like they did exactly what

(05:29):
they wanted to do. They got good value in all
three guys, and they hit a home run at what
they wanted to do. No surprise. I have my homes obviously,
but they have a good roster because they draft the
guys they need to fill the spots they need.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
Jeff, you know you and I have covered drafts together
this year.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Obviously, I've been with Bucky leading up to this draft,
and we always hear a lot of noise before the draft,
especially about two weeks before, you know, people are getting
information from inside, people saying, hey, this guy's moving up,
this guy's moving down.

Speaker 4 (05:58):
This was all.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
Garbage this year.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
The idea that Will Levis was suddenly going to be
maybe not even the second pick overall, maybe the first
pick overall, and that somehow Tyree Wilson was going to
be taken over Will Anderson Junior as the edge guy.
When you looked at the top three picks in this draft,
Rice Young, CJ. Stroud, Will Anderson Junior. That's what everybody had.

(06:20):
Everybody had until two weeks ago, and then all of
a sudden, we are sold at Oh.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
No, no, no, everyone's loving on Will Levis.

Speaker 1 (06:28):
Look, with all due respect to a guy like mel
Kiper who's been doing this for one hundred years, he
needs to step down if he's going to continue to
sell the idea that he's getting some kind of inside information.
This so called inside information is always leaked by two sources,
either from organizations trying to throw the scent off on
their desire to get a player to other teams or

(06:50):
agents who are trying to get their player up in
the draft, and the idea that there's an urgency.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
If you don't move up, my guy's going to go.

Speaker 1 (06:59):
They I don't know how it is that these so
called draft experts buy into it, because then they feed us,
and even though it may not make any sense, you know.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
We have to talk about it.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
I mean, like last week, Bucky and I are sitting
there talking about the betting odds suddenly had Levice as
a possible number one overall pick, and bet the bank
that Houston is not taking a quarterback. They're gonna go
with Tyree Wilson, the edge guy out of Texas Tech.
None of that was true. It never was true. And
so it's funny when we talk about where the draft

(07:34):
is now and the amounting amount of coverage, and I
think there was something like thirty five million people watching
the draft first round, some crazy number. Right, It's understandable,
but I think, you know, I think you have to
go back to your instincts and really think about who
these top players were.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
What did you think of that test that CJ.

Speaker 1 (07:54):
Stroud failed miserably on, which apparently just plummeted his draft value.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
You how does that score leak out?

Speaker 1 (08:02):
And were you at the only surprised he ended up
two overall to the Texans.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
I'm glad you talked about kind of how this ended
up happening, right, because if you would have said the
end of the season, Okay, who goes one in two?
Bryce Young?

Speaker 4 (08:16):
C J.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
Stroud? The easy answer, right, the simplest answer, the best
quarterback on the second best quarterback defensive player in the
mark Well, Jalen Carter up there, right, Carter? I think
most might be had greater the best player in the draft. Okay,
but obviously there's some reasons why he wasn't up there. Nonetheless, Okay,
you know, we go through the process and every year

(08:38):
we try to convince ourselves the most kind of common
answer is not the one that is going to happen, right,
the the the most predictable answer is not going to happen.
In this case, it absolutely did. It absolutely happened, and
it uh like of course it was gonna happened, right.

(09:00):
The two most important players at the most important position
went one in two. And the thing about the testing
for Stroud is this is why you know, data and
all this stuff is important. But also you gotta watch
a film, right, because that didn't show on the film.
Exactly didn't show on the film, And I think it's
unfair to put that number out there. Plus, we don't

(09:22):
have a lot of background on this test, so for
like me, I'm like S two. I called around though
it's a cognition test, okay, but like what do we
have for background on it? Has it been done for
so many years? I thought it was unfair to him.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Well, if you had passed on CJ.

Speaker 1 (09:36):
Stroud and ignore what he did against Georgia, you're an idiot. Yeah,
I mean it was the single most impressive quarterback performance
by far a year ago, considering the talent on that
Georgia defense and how he absolutely tore them apart, not
just with his arm, but also was able to do

(09:58):
some scrambling because he's not known as a guy that
you know is gonna get a lot of yards on
the ground, but he was able to do everything on
the biggest stage in that game. All Right, So we're
gonna go over a lot of the draft today. We
also got plenty of NBA playoff news. We're gonna get
to the Lakers, by the way, winning their first playoff
series outside of the bubble in eleven years, and they

(10:19):
still are waiting to find out who they'll play next,
Sacramento Kings or the Golden State Warriors. So a little
bit later on, we're gonna try to break it down
on which would be the preferable opponent if you're the
Los Angeles Pikers. But on the other side, the Colts
had the fourth overall pick and they want with Anthony Richardson,
what should we expect from the former Florida Gator.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
We're gonna break it down. This is Fox Sports Saturday.

Speaker 4 (10:45):

Live Steve Harbin, Jeff Schwartz, Fox Sports Saturday. We're coming
you live from the Tyraq dot com studios.

Speaker 2 (11:45):
Jim er Say, the owner of.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
The Indianapolis Colts, is prone Jeff to say some ridiculous things.

Speaker 2 (11:53):
At least he's a good guy. His dad was not.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
But he actually put out on Twitter after taking Anthony
Richardson fourth or over on the draft a tweet that
said Colts fans, would you take Will Levis at number
two if you're on the board for the Colts in
four hours from now. Okay, so let's and by the way,
Jim Marsay is also maintaining had the Colts had the

(12:18):
number one overall pick, they would have taken Anthony Richardson.
What do you think was the prevailing sentiment about Anthony
Richardson going into this draft? Because obviously, after the Combine,
when he put up all these ridiculous numbers, his name skyrocketed,
and then people look back at his numbers at Florida

(12:40):
last year, completing less than fifty four percent of his passes.
But by the time we got to draft day, what
do you think was the overwhelming sentiment about Anthony Richardson.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
That we have a player who's so physically gifted that
we can basically start off with him being a du
all in the offense, Like, hey man, we're gonna have
your run, we're gonna play action pass, We're gonna build
specific packages around your athletic ability as you grow into

(13:12):
a more polished NFL passer, Like, there's so many things
we can do with you because you're a physical freak essentially, right,
And there's an upside to that, right, Like there's an
upside to that to that now, Steve, there's a huge
boom boom potential and a giant bus potential right now.

(13:34):
Shane Steiken, the head coach for the Colts, now has
worked with as a rookie. He was a quarterback coach
in Los Angeles. I think they were the Chargers the
Los Angeles. They were the Chargers. I think they were
in Los Angeles. Then with with with Herbert right, and
then he was now obviously the OC with Jalen Hurts,
so he has he has now coached kind of Now

(13:55):
Hurts wasn't as big as as Justin Herbert, but two
guys that were very mobile, very athletic, could move. Justin
Herbert obviously giant cannon of an arm like that. You know,
there's Richardson has some of those traits, right, So that
appealed to to to Shane Steichen, So that I think

(14:20):
is why they went with richards And now I think
they would have gone with Bryce Young. But I will
say this the thing about Bryce Young. I'm here, I'm
here in Carolina. I was out today, my kids had
baseball and Charlotte and everyone's pumped about Bryce Young, and
I'm with you. He's the best quarterback in this draft.
But it's hard because drafting and outlier steve, whether it's

(14:43):
at the at either spectrum the biggest, the fastest, the strongest,
or the weakest, the slowest, the smallest and number one
overall is tough, right, Bryce Young for him to succeed
the level of the Panthers want super Bowl right, so
they want he would be the smallest quarterback in the
first round to ever.

Speaker 4 (15:03):
Be that good.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
See I look at things. For instance, the argument between
Will Anderson Junior and Tyree Wilson.

Speaker 2 (15:10):
Right, So, Tyree physically.

Speaker 1 (15:13):
Is more impressive. Yes, he's a more impressive edge guy.
The argument was is that physically, Tyree Wilson is the
superior athlete, but Will Anderson Junior has better football instincts.
So if I'm evaluating players, unless there.

Speaker 3 (15:31):
I mean tyr Wilson is a better football instance.

Speaker 1 (15:33):
No, no, no, no, Will Anderson Junior had better So Tyree
Wilson was the more physical player, but Will Anderson Junior
had better football instincts. So I'm so I'm weighing these
two factors and evaluating talent to try to pick the
right guy, especially when it's you know, a top ten
pick where you better not miss, and unfortunately for these teams,

(15:54):
they miss a lot with these premium picks. I'm gonna
go with the guy with the instincts, the guy that
knows how to actually play the game a little bit better,
because we've seen it time and again, guys that get
downgraded in the draft because physically they don't measure up.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
I mean, linebackers galore.

Speaker 1 (16:12):
I can go back to Mike Singletary, who was averaging
twenty five tackles a game at Baylor, dropped down to
the second round because he was five to eleven. Guess
what he continued to track all twenty on his way
to the Hall of Fame. Luke Keigley, maybe downgrade a
little bit similar, not quite as some people just get it.
They understand how to play the game. So I was

(16:33):
pleased to see Will Anderson Junior go third overall. And
what did you by the way, I had never even
got to this point about and we'll get back to
Richards in a moment here. With this Will Anderson, the
Texans moving up to that third overall pick, they had
a lot of extra picks they averybe to move them around,
but to end up getting both CJ.

Speaker 2 (16:50):
Stroud and Will Anderson Junior.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
What did you make of that doubleheader?

Speaker 3 (16:57):
I loved it. You have a new coach, you're trying
to build a program up again, and you have the
askes to do so, you know, because everyone's well, they
give up too much to move back up whether they
have the Browns first round pick again next year too,
So they still have a first round pick next season,
and you got yourself a quarterback in the future and
the best pass rusher in the draft. What more can

(17:19):
you ask for? Right? I loved it. I am look man,
I am gonna always kind of lean on on the
side of a little bit of aggression, like it's okay
to be aggressive in my opinion in this in this situation.
So I on for it. I think it was a
big swing. I'll take it. If you're a Texans fan,

(17:42):
you have to be excited about what they did. All right.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
Let's get back to Anthony Richardson. So the Colts have Minshew.
Is nick Fole still there? I believe technically he's still there.
Sam Ellinger is there. How do you think they're going
to handle the Anthony Richardson development? Are they going to
throw them to the fire? Are they gonna let him observe?
I mean, to me, the best experience is to get experience.

(18:04):
And some teams have the luxury as the Chiefs did
with Patrick Mahomes because they had an established quarterback and
Alex Smith, you know, one of the least appreciated quarterbacks.
I think over the last decade plus he won a
lot more games than he lost. But how do you
think they will handle stike In and those that make
those decisions with the Colts and developing Richardson.

Speaker 3 (18:27):
I think you take your time right, and I think
that with a new coach you have time to do
that right. A returning coach, you probably don't feel as
you know, as kind of you don't feel like you
have time right. But with a new coach, you got
plenty of time to make this work. And I think

(18:49):
you let the young guys start first, and you put
richards in when he's ready to play. There's no purpose
in letting him play before he's ready, Like it's not
going to get him more ready. In my opinion, you
just when he's ready to go in, you put him
in there like that's simple. There's no rush to get
this to get him on the field week one. I

(19:09):
know the fans are gonna want them to play. I
mean people in the Billdy might want to play, but
you got to make sure he's ready because with a
player like him, I feel like things can almost go
poorly and maybe even worse if you make him play
before he's ready to do so.

Speaker 1 (19:24):
All right, we're halfway through the sixth round of this draft,
so the draft is pretty much coming to a close
at the end of the day. And of course all
these games that are coming out the board right now,
you get to Day three, you're just hoping. You're hoping
that somehow, some way you pulled off a pick on somebody. Well,
look what happened a year ago with the forty nine
ers in the last overall pick in the draft, with

(19:44):
Brock Party turned out to be a good starting quarterback.
There are other things that were related to this draft
that I want to get to, including the Jets and
the Ravens of finally getting deals done to get their quarterbacks.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
We're going to to that a quicker minor though.

Speaker 1 (20:01):
Fox Sports Radios twenty twenty three draft coverage is presented

Level Up your strength, energy and focus at cchoq dot com.
Use the draft code Draft for thirty five percent off
any subscription for life c Houq cchoq dot Com Code Draft. Yeah,

(20:28):
I definitely on the other side, I want to get
into a little more detail here on some of these
quarterback deals that were done.

Speaker 4 (20:34):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
One other quick note about this draft, and as far
as the quarterback position was concerned, Eleven of the top
one hundred and fifty picks in this draft were quarterbacks. Jeff,
That's never been done before. Are you surprised by that number?
And I haven't been paying attention to Max Duggan still
out there.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
I believe he is.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
Yeah, the runner up for the Heisman Trophy.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
It's interesting because the Chargers selected both of his wide receivers.
Two of the wide receivers from that TCU team ended
up with the Chargers. Seems like that entire TCU team
has been drafted coming off there a miracle run a
year ago. That quarterback Max dugg and uh, still sitting
out there. I know he's had some health concerns in

(21:17):
the past, but man, I love that guy's competitiveness. And
you see Stetson Bennett come off a board are you
surprised to Max Duggan still waiting for a call?

Speaker 3 (21:28):
No, I'm not. I was actually surprised Stetson Ben was
drafting the fourth round because by the Rams, Like, what's
the point of that of that draft pick? If you're
the Rams, you have a lot of holes in your roster?
Does Stetson Bennett fix the problem of yours? Like? Is
he your next quarterback? And when Stafford's done? Like, when
Stafford's done, you just are gonna stink and draft a

(21:50):
quarterback the year after he's he's no longer there, Like,
why would you draft stets Be? It feels like a
complete waste of a draft pick to draft a fourth
round backup quarter What is the purpose of that draft picked?

Speaker 1 (22:03):
Well, let me ask you this because you and I
were covering a lot of this during the demise of
the Rams a year ago on whether or not it
was an aberration, Like is this a team that's going
to bounce right back and be in the playoff contention
in twenty twenty three? You seem to think yeah. In fact,
most people I talk to seem yeah, And I'm like, really,
I mean you really think that Matthew Stafford is going

(22:24):
to come back to the level we saw.

Speaker 2 (22:26):
In twenty twenty one. I don't see it.

Speaker 1 (22:29):
I think this Rams team, by making this pick, may
have some concerns. But drafting a guy like Stetson Bennett,
you know, who's five to eleven, look at it, Is
he a winner? It's hard to say. We've seen a
lot of quarterbacks have a lot of success in terms
of wins and losses when they're surrounded like great talent.
I remember Gino Torretta on a Heisman Trophy at the

(22:52):
University of Miami. He was a seventh round pick because
he was a seventh round quarterback and barely got a
cup of coffee at the NFL, And the guy almost
never lost because he was surrounded by great talent. But
I'm just wondering if the Stetson Bennett selection has something
to do with the status Matthew Stafford. All right, we're
going to get to the whole situation evolving the Jets

(23:14):
and the Ravens and their quarterbacks. But first let's find
out what is trending right now. And Nick Cope is
hanging out with us today. By the way, Nick, a
little bit later on that now, but later, because we
know you're locked.

Speaker 2 (23:26):
Into those Sacramento Kings.

Speaker 1 (23:28):
Yes, and they have that big Game seven tomorrow against
the Warriors after a remarkable.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
Formance last night.

Speaker 1 (23:34):
I mean, I was unbelievable all the scenarios last night.

Speaker 7 (23:38):
I didn't have blowout win for the Kings as an outcome.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
Yeah, after losing Game five at home and then come
back and win Game six on the road. But we'll
get to that a little bit later on. So are
we close to the end of this draft?

Speaker 2 (23:51):
Nick here?

Speaker 7 (23:51):
Yeah, So we're winding down here. In the sixth round,
you mentioned eleven quarterbacks taken in the top one fifty
I think it was. There were actually twelve total taken
through the first five rounds. That's the most in the
common draft era going back to the mid sixties. You
had five of them going a fourteen pick span earlier,
Jay Canner out of Fresno State going to the Saints,

(24:13):
the Rams taking Stetson Bennett. Raiders took Aidan O'Connell out
of Purdue. Houston quarterback Clayton Toone went to the Cardinals
early in the fifth, and then the very next pick,
the Browns drafted UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson. Also in
the fifth round, Packers drafting Penn State QB Sean Clifford.
Vikings took BYU quarterback Jaron Hill, and then in the

(24:33):
sixth round couple names, Eagles selected Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee.
Patriots took LSU receiver Kaysehawan Boody that was also in
the sixth round, and then the Patriots they drafted Michigan
State punter Bryce Behringer here in the sixth round. They
took Maryland kicker Chad Ryland in the fourth round earlier today.
I don't know, Steve, you're a history guy if you
want a little impromptu trivia here, but New England is

(24:55):
the first team to take a punter and a kicker
in the same draft since this team in the year
two thousand, Wow.

Speaker 2 (25:03):
Two thousand? Would it be the Raiders?

Speaker 1 (25:07):
Ding Ding Ding Wow?

Speaker 7 (25:09):
Sebastian Janikowski, Shane Leckler, w Laur will be in the
Hall of Fame, so at Sebastian Janetkowski the great story
about the Raiders where it's curse the first team to
take a punter in the first round.

Speaker 1 (25:20):
Ray guy in nineteen seventy three, I was not working
for the Raiders back then, but I heard the legendary
story of John Madden when they.

Speaker 2 (25:27):
Made that pick, storming out of.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
The room like absolutely screaming like a banjie, like we.

Speaker 2 (25:33):
Just took out putter in the first round.

Speaker 1 (25:36):
Once he saw Ray guy show off his punting prowess,
he was never complaining again about that shit special for
New England though, right really that's.

Speaker 7 (25:45):
And they and they traded up in the fourth round
to take that Maryland kicker as well, so he was
actually the second one off the board. Niners took a
kicker in the third round yesterday. Elsewhere, the Lions said
they're not drafting but trading running back downre Swift. He's
going to the Eagles after they took Alabama running back
Jamier Gibbs in the first round on Thursday.

Speaker 1 (26:04):
So it makes sense there.

Speaker 7 (26:05):
Teams are swapping seventh rounders here today. And then Detroit
is also going to receive a fourth round pick in
twenty twenty five. And the NBA Sixers coach Doc Rivers
said juell And Beat his doubtful for Monday's Game one
against the Celtics. It's got that knee injury. The Eastern
Conference semi finals getting underway in a couple of days
Western Conference Semis. They start tonight Nuggets and Suns Game one,

(26:26):
eight to thirty Eastern. Quickly to baseball. The Pirates keep
on rolling. They beat the National six to three. Pittsburgh
has now won nine out of their last ten. Tigers
out the Orioles seven to four, a game one of
their doubleheader. Braves and Mets were rained out today. Got
a couple games going on.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
Two to two.

Speaker 7 (26:41):
Ball game between the Royals and the Twins in the eighth.
Still no score between the Mariners and Blue Jays in
the seventh. Then a few games have just gotten underway.
Marlins on top of the Cubs four nothing. No score
between the Reds and the A's, and the Red Sox
lead the Guardians three to zip.

Speaker 1 (26:54):
Let's go back to Jeff Schwartz and Steve Harmon.

Speaker 2 (26:56):
All right, Nick, thanks so much. We'll check in with
you a little bit later on.

Speaker 1 (26:59):
Once again, we're company Alive from the tairaq dot com studios.
All right, So, Jeff, a week ago, Bucky and I
were sitting here talking about the fact that it would
seem inevitable that the Packers Jets deal for Aaron Rodgers
had to get done before the draft, and I was
making the argument the Jets had two picks, back to
back picks at the time in the second round.

Speaker 2 (27:21):
I said, you're not going to give up the thirteenth
overall pick.

Speaker 1 (27:24):
As it turned out, they sort of swapped thirteen and fifteen,
but the idea of trading both those seconds to get
Aaron Rodgers, I said, I think that's okay. As it
turned out, they gave up one of those picks and
then a pick next year that potentially could be a
first round pick. And I know a lot of people
are screaming that the Jets overpaid. I disagree. I'm like,

(27:50):
think of some worst case scenarios for the Jets. Let's
say it's a one and done year, but they get
to the playoffs after missing the playoffs twelve consecuted years.
That's a win for the Jets. This is a desperate
franchise and he had an opportunity to acquire. Even though
the eyeball test says he is in semi decline, he
should be invigorated by putting on a new uniform. But

(28:12):
I think the Jets did what they had to do.
He had to get into a Jets uniform asap. Preferably
before the draft, which is the deal they got done.
So I disagree with a lot of the so called
oh way they wait, they got fleeced by the Packers.
I don't think so the Jets needed to get him
in a uniform asap, because if they had not gotten

(28:33):
a deal done before the draft, all bets were off
of when that deal would actually get done. So I
think the Jets made the right move.

Speaker 3 (28:42):
Yeah, I think the question is for me about who
gets fleeced and who doesn't is we have to see
in a couple of years. I know it's kind of
maybe a cop on answer, but.

Speaker 2 (28:54):
It's an honest answer.

Speaker 3 (28:55):
But because the success of this trade will be based
on off of the play of Jordan Love and Aaron Rodgers,
but more important than the success of the Jets team
the next year or two, because to me, it's super
Bowl or bust for the Jets. You've traded for the
best quarterback in franchise history by far right. Yeah, Joe
Namath great forty years ago, but Aaron Rodgers better than

(29:19):
name it. FARV had a good season before he got hurt,
but FARV was not at Aaron Rodgers level. When FARV
was traded to the Jets. He's the best quarterback the
team has ever had. As you mentioned, they have the
longest professional sports playoff drought now with the King's in
the playoffs twelve years. Right, the Mariners made it last year,
King's made it this year. Maybe that means the Jets

(29:39):
will make it and they'll in their drought. But it's
Super Bowl or bust. They have loaded up the roster
for Aaron Rodgers and they've made this trade with the
idea of making the Super Bowl. AFC conference is very
tough to make the super Bowl. The Packers have a
different end game in my opinion. Right the end game
is not to even in my opinion, to even make
the NCAA champion game this year. It's like, let's win
a division first with Love, right, Like, let's see what

(30:00):
Love has this season, and if we win the division
or we're a wild card team, he's our guy. Let's
sign him up, let's build around him, and let's continue
to move forward. And so the end game is different
for both these squads. The Packers, in my opinion, have
more of a chance to quotote win their endgame, which
is Jordan Love is good and in the next couple

(30:22):
of years, you build a roster and three years from
now it's like, Okay, we're competing for the NFC. Then
the Jets have right now in the AFC Conference of
like we need to win now or else, and the
or else is like Aaron Rodgers retires after this season.
You've had one year of Rogers and you've given your
first round pick in twenty twenty four of the Packers

(30:42):
for one year to go ten and seven and lose
on the road to the Chiefs in the wildcard round.
You know what I mean. Like, it's just it's the
Jets margin of Araman is so tiny in this in
this spot right now.

Speaker 2 (30:57):
I again, know here's what I'm curious for the Jets
moving forward.

Speaker 1 (31:00):
So I mean again, Aaron Rodgers came to the Jets
for a number of reasons.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
One, he had certainly closed the door on the Packers.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
He'd been talking about that for several years, and once
it was clear that he alone was not going to
be able to take the Packers back to that thirteen
win level that they have for three consecutive years, the
Packers were more than ready to move on and give
Jordan Love an opportunity.

Speaker 2 (31:22):
But you look at what the Jets did in the
draft last year.

Speaker 1 (31:24):
I mean, you got the best corner in the league
as a rookie. Saft Card is the best corner right
now currently in the NFL. You got Wilson, the offensive
rookie of the year. You got Breis Hall, who might
have been the offensive rookie of the year had he
not gotten hurt. So the idea that the Jets were
coming off such a successful draft I think made it

(31:45):
even easier to engineer whatever draft picks were necessary to
get this deal done asap. I just again, how this
is all going to play out, not only for Aaron
Rodgers and the Jets, but how this plays out for
Zach Wilson.

Speaker 2 (32:03):
In other words, he's still there. What exactly are you
doing with him? Is he going to take a step back?

Speaker 1 (32:10):
Learning at defeat of Aaron Rodgers somehow clear as head
because his problems weren't just on the field, they were
off the field as well.

Speaker 2 (32:18):
How do you think the Jets will handle that?

Speaker 3 (32:21):
I Mean the honest answer is I don't know. They care,
like right like, I mean.

Speaker 2 (32:25):
They've already turned the page on that.

Speaker 1 (32:27):
Yeah, Like so they did the third overall pick on
Sam Darnold turn the page on that second overall pick.

Speaker 3 (32:33):
Will what do they hope he's ready to play in
two years when Rogers?

Speaker 1 (32:36):
I don't know, he's still a young quarterback, right, I
don't know.

Speaker 3 (32:41):
I guess I would argue how many?

Speaker 2 (32:44):
Honestly, how long do you think Aaron Rodgers is going
to stay with the Jets?

Speaker 3 (32:48):
Two years? Max?

Speaker 1 (32:49):
Exactly?

Speaker 3 (32:50):
But then Wilson's contract is up, like they're not gonna
pick up his fifth year option. He's done. He'd be gone.
He'd be gone after that, He's gonna be gone. This
is the second season, right, so he'll be gone by
the time Rogers is ready to be out of New York.

Speaker 1 (33:03):
By the way, you know which NFL team has the
second longest playoff drought right now?

Speaker 3 (33:10):
The second longest playoff drought? Know who would that be?

Speaker 2 (33:13):
That would be the Denver Broncos.

Speaker 1 (33:15):
Oh, seven straight years since they won that last Super Bowl.
They have the second longest drought of any team out there.

(33:36):
On the other side, Lamar Jackson finally got a deal
done with the Baltimore Ravens, and he did it without
an agent, and he got a lot of money. Could
this be a new trend in the NFL? We'll break
it down this it's Fox Sports Saturday. Steve Harmin and
Jeff Schwartz Here, this is Fox Sports Saturday and we
are coming alive from the tai Iraq dot com studios.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
By the way, Fox Sports Radio is twenty twenty three.

Speaker 1 (34:03):

(34:24):
Lamar Jackson is now the highest paid player in the
National Football League and he got it done without an agent. Jeff,
I can't help but think that this deal finally got
done doing part to the Eagles making Jalen Hurts for
at least a day or so, the highest paid player

(34:45):
in the NFL. So do you think other players may
look at this? Lamar Jackson situation. It took a long time,
but ultimately he got what he wanted and the Ravens
get to keep their quarterback. Is this an isolated acinent
or more guys gonna say, why am I paying an
agent to do the work that obviously I can get

(35:05):
done by myself.

Speaker 3 (35:07):
Well, we also don't know if if someone helped, because
we heard that he was having someone help him, right,
like you know this guy contacting teams on his behalf, right,
I don't do We know that no one helped Lamar
Jackson at all through this entire process. He just did
it by himself. I think that sometimes some of the
players that don't have agents have someone help them who's

(35:29):
a manager of some sorts, someone who's able to help
with some of the legal ease of the contract, right,
and little things here and there. I will say that
for a lot of players, an agent and paying the
agent is just being able to not have to worry
about a part of your life, right, and the fee

(35:51):
of whatever you negotiate, if it's one percent up to
three percent, A lot of players in Lamar Jackson's shoes
will say, look, man, I'll pay you the two million
of the two hundred and you know, of the two
hundred million I'm getting, just don't have to worry about this,
Just like to not have to worry about it. I
don't want I don't want to have to talk to
the Ravens. I don't want to have to figure out,

(36:13):
you know, how many years I'm getting, how much guaranteed
I should get. I don't want to have to deal
with the little contract details of the roster bonuses and
when they're paid out and is it is it guaranteed
for skill and injury? And is there no trade clause?
Can they franchise tag me? Can they not? I think
players are are okay, a lot of them just like yeah, man,
I'd rather pay someone to deal with that. I know

(36:34):
in my career I was found with paying my agent
to do that for me. Lamar Jackson didn't want to
do that, and more power to him. It worked for him.
It totally worked. He got what he wanted in the end,
not everything. Obviously. He wanted the highest guaranteed contract of
all time, but no one was given that to him. Right,
excuse me? He wanted the most guaranteed money. Sorry, he
won the fully guaranteed contract he want. He wanted the

(36:57):
Shaun Watson if no one was giving him. We knew
that all and then he saw the Hurts deal get done.
It never happened. But here's one thing to do to consider.
I say this often with quarterback contracts, is the money
is virtually guaranteed, right like Lamar. Lamar needs to be
hurt for two years in a row to see that,

(37:20):
to not see that entire contract, you know, people say, well,
Mahomes did a ten year deal, so long it's the
Chiefs are never cutting Patrick Mahomes.

Speaker 8 (37:29):
Ever, they're never cutting him. The Ravens are never cutting
Lamar Jackson. If he misses this entire first year with
an injury, guess what, He's coming back next year and
he's their quarterback.

Speaker 3 (37:41):
So the idea that you need to make this as
messy as he did was probably not necessary.

Speaker 4 (37:46):
Right.

Speaker 3 (37:47):
It was a lot of drama for what I think
me and you. I didn't listen to your comments on
this the last couple of months, but I would imagine
you're in line with me. The most logical outcome was
he was back with the Ravens.

Speaker 1 (37:57):
Right, and it sort of helped explain why they were
or no offers that publicly offers for you know, two
number one picks, that he was an unprotected franchise guy,
and that never Endone's like, why isn't anybody interested in
Lamar Jackson.

Speaker 3 (38:12):
Because he was going back to the Ravens and anything
was exactly And I think a lot of teams said, look,
you know, if you're the Colts, okay, let's use a culture.
For example, I thought I thought the Colts were was
a legit opportunity for him to go to the Colts.
If you're the Colts, you pay Lamar Jackson all that
money guaranteed, give up two first round drafts or just
draft Anthony Richardson. You'd rather just draft Anthony Richardson. And

(38:35):
that's what a lot I think a lot of teams
came down to, is that the cost benefits wanting to
pay Lamar maybe some of the noise. And also I
think that everyone figured out that he would go back
to the Ravens and look, Lamar's inn a ton of
winning in Baltimore. I'm going to pick them to win
the division again because guess what all he's done in
Baltimore is win. I think he's won seventy five percent
of the starts. The issue is the last two years,

(38:56):
he's finished one in your reserve not playing, not physically,
but he hasn't been playing, and so that I think
is the biggest concern is the health is now that
he's still healthy.

Speaker 1 (39:07):
All right, So obviously he is currently the highest paid quarterback.
We're all waiting for the Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow
deals to eventually get done. By the way, how about
the Chargers. They picked up the fifth year option on
Justin Herbert. There, that's a typical Chargers move. But there's
another quarterback out there, the guy that's actually the best
quarterback in the league, Patrick Mahomes. Do you think there's

(39:27):
ever going to be a time when Mahomes, who signed
that long, long term deal with the Chiefs, may reconsider
that contract and saying why are all these quarterbacks making
more money than me? When I am the best quarterback
in the NFL. Could you ever see Mahomes or is
he going to follow the route of Tom Brady, who
at no point was ever the highest paid quarterback in

(39:49):
the NFL?

Speaker 3 (39:51):
I don't know. Mahomes follow the Chiefs obviously very closely.
He does not seem like the guy that's ever going
to demand to be the highest paid. I think the Chiefs,
you know, next ye or two, we'll throw more money
in his direction to make him happy. But he's making
you know, seven ten million dollars off the field. He's
making forty to forty five on the field. I think

(40:11):
he's totally just content with winning championships in Kansas City
and making fifty million dollars a year with the Chiefs
and with endorsements, and if it helps him have one
world wide receiver that they save seven million dollars a
year on his contract, he's fine doing that.

Speaker 2 (40:25):
All right.

Speaker 1 (40:25):
The Lakers have moved on to the second round of
the playoffs. Lebron and company. Who would be at a
better opponent for them in the next round, the Warriors
or the Kings. We're gonna break it all down, keep
it right here. This is Fox Sports Saturday.

Speaker 2 (41:11):
Buying should be.

Speaker 1 (41:11):
So, Jeff, we are or I am broadcasting for our
new studios today here across the hall from our old studios.
I will tell you the big plus is here. And
you've been in these studios in the past. But the
new studio I can see Sam clearly. I can see
producer Brandon clearly. I actually can see Nick. We have
never been able to see the guys that are actually

(41:33):
given are the updates, so we have a clear view
of everybody. We're making a few adjustments, but all of
this will be resolved. But by the way, Jerry Springer
passed away this week and I was showing the guys
an interview. I actually had a one on one in
studio interview in our old studios with Jerry Springer.

Speaker 2 (41:52):
He was a great guy, you know, I'll put it
this way. He was one of those.

Speaker 1 (41:56):
Guys that was very honest about his celebrity and how
he became a seleelebrity and the kind of television that
he Seed over the years he was he was great.
He'll be missed. He had an impact, There's no question
about that. Did you watch Springer, especially during his A
day I did.

Speaker 3 (42:12):
I think it's a little bit of a youth and
just tell you, miss I think that was back when
I thought it was sort of like real if that
makes sense.

Speaker 1 (42:21):
Mm hmm.

Speaker 2 (42:21):
Yeah, I mean sure you bought.

Speaker 3 (42:23):
Into it before I realized what kind of the production
side of television. But yeah, no, I have a good
friend I work with who knew him closely, so he
shared some stories with me this week about kind of
the kindness that he that Jerry had and whatnot. So
it's good to hear from him about that.

Speaker 2 (42:40):
Yeah, he didn't take himself too seriously.

Speaker 1 (42:42):
He realized he sort of happened upon a format that
was working for him and he was the perfect guy
to carry it off. So yeah, we're in our new
studios and having a clear view of everybody works, especially
I see Nick here.

Speaker 2 (42:55):
I mean it's unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (42:56):
I mean, like Nick's talking to me now, Nick, you
want to be listening right now because you're mister Sacramento Kings.

Speaker 4 (43:03):
Here.

Speaker 1 (43:03):
The Kings and Warriors will have their game seven tomorrow.
What's interesting is that the Eastern Conference semis are going
on now.

Speaker 3 (43:15):
Well, so is the Western Conference tonight.

Speaker 1 (43:17):
Yeah, so we've got we got semis going on before
we actually finished one of the opening round playoff series,
so we have the Sons and Nuggets. So actually that's
the one game tonight is game one of the Western
Conference semis between the Suns and the Nuggets. But as
far as the Lakers last night and their forty point

(43:38):
blowout victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, let's let's talk about
your guy, mister Oregon Duck, Dylan.

Speaker 3 (43:47):
Brooks, my guys lebron Lebrony.

Speaker 1 (43:50):
I understand, but you share a school with Dylan Brooks.

Speaker 3 (43:55):
Shunned.

Speaker 1 (43:57):
You know the funny thing about a guy like Dylan
Brooks because people say, well, you have like a Draymond
Green or Patrick.

Speaker 2 (44:04):
Exactly. There are certain guys.

Speaker 1 (44:08):
I'll tell you another guy that went back in the
day and it wasn't maybe as overt as some of
these guys, but Derek Fisher played that role for the
Lakers for years and years. He would do the dirty stuff,
some of the things that had to get done behind
the scenes. So let Kobe go get a game winning
against this exactly.

Speaker 2 (44:26):
Well, that's the whole point.

Speaker 1 (44:27):
In other words, I'm mentioning guys that actually showed they
had some game where beyond their antics, that get actually contribute.
Dylan Brooks, would you even want this guy still on
your team next season? I don't know if he does
the Grizzlies and he favors I don't.

Speaker 3 (44:44):
Know if he's back next year with the way he played. Okay,
here's the thing about the Brooks thing too. Yeah, and
you mentioned you, Derek Fisher. I think it's totally okay
during the game to have one player whose job and
it is just so annoyed as someone on the other team. Absolutely,
we did that in football, like we would we would pick.
There were games. It was one of my favorite moments
in the NFL. There was we were playing a team

(45:06):
and one of our offensive linemen knew one of the
defensive liignment. No, I don't think there were friends, but
he knew about him. He said, look, guys, every play,
one of us has to go in the guy's face
and say a mean word to him every play, and
it would throw him off his game. So every single
play of that game, Steve, one offensive Lineman of the
Five of Us went up to him after the play

(45:28):
instead of mean warn't to him, okay, and it totally
made him furious the entire game. He didn't play very well. Okay,
totally fine to do that on the court, on the field,
but Derek Fisher wasn't going and doing it in the press, right,
he wasn't calling players out. One of the best ever
to do it in Lebron James saying I don't respect
Lebron James. I would have actually been okay if Dylan

(45:49):
Brooks had just said what he said and left that
their respect part out of it, because to say like
you might not you might not like Lebron James and
playing people don't like Lebron James, but you can't say
that you don't respect him as a player, right, There's
no way that validates everything you said. And then it
also you had the Lakers kind of in a moment.
It was the series was one to one, Lakers didn't

(46:11):
play well in Game two. It kind of had him
in a moment of like a little bit of weakness.
They were showing a little bit of like, ah, you know,
maybe you know, maybe it's not And then all of
a sudden you kind of gave him a spark and
ever since that moment, their offense was much better. They
played defense better, like it gave him a little bit
of of a gidea up and it just was dumb

(46:31):
thing to do. It was a dumbe co after Lebron
unless you're gonna put the Lakers down. And last time,
obviously a forty point loss. To me, it showed what
the Lakers can be. It's not what they always are,
but when you have other guys outside of a d
and Lebron contributing like Russell can, like we've seen Reeves
at a certain time, especially Game one of the Memphis series,

(46:52):
when when you have someone else outside of those two
guys putting up over twenty points with the way the
Lakers play defense hard to beat them, it really is.

Speaker 1 (47:01):
Yeah, you know interesting about Lebron James in this series
because I'm so I'm watching the game last night.

Speaker 2 (47:07):
It was a buddy's birthday.

Speaker 1 (47:08):
And he's a huge Lakers fan, and he was like,
this is a perfect birthday, man, Lakers gonna win the championship.

Speaker 2 (47:14):
I'm like, slow down, slow down a little bit.

Speaker 1 (47:17):
Here coming up in the next round, They're either going
to play a Sacramento Kings team that is very young
and athletic, and you chow heart, I mean to go
on the road against the Warriors after who saw that
one coming? You just thought, all right, they're just not
ready for the spotlight. They've been out of the playoffs
way too long. First playoff experience for these kids, the

(47:39):
de Aaron Foxes, the simonas Is, all these guys, and
they go on the road after losing Game five at
home and win convincingly. So I'm sitting there with the
Lakers and I'm trying to figure this out. If you're
the Lakers right now, and again, the Lakers having advanced
through a playoff series in a non bubble playoff series

(48:01):
for the first time since twenty twelve, who do you
want to see here? I mean, do you want to
see the younger Kings team or do you want to
see your old nemesis the Warriors, who obviously have all
that pedigree. This is a tough We were talking about
this before the show, Jeff, you didn't have an immediate answer.

Speaker 2 (48:18):
What are your thoughts here?

Speaker 3 (48:20):
I think you would try to avoid the Warriors. I
think in the what the Kings did last night shocked me.
I thought the Warriors, you know they've been They've been
a terrible road team all season, all season, right, the
first two games of this series they lost in Sacramento.
They obviously won the next two games at home, but
they won the Game four by a point. I thought

(48:41):
the Kings would win Game five, and then the Wars
won Game six and Game seven. Anything happens. Obviously, that flipped, right,
and games stunned me last night. I was shocked. Now
everyone's penciling the Kings to win Game seven. I would say,
you know, not so fast, friend, right, Like, the Warriors
are champions and they're not going to come out for.

Speaker 1 (48:58):
The Warriors also were the worst road team in the
l eleven and thirty on the road to win twice.

Speaker 3 (49:03):
But they just want a game five on the road though, Like, yeah,
you know, but they just want a game five of
the road. They're a championship team. They're not just going
to roll over even though they didn't game since. I
felt like I think I think it's the Kings. I
think if you're the Lakers, you'd rather play the more
inexperienced team who's not been that spot before, who you know,
the youth might get to them. They don't have. I

(49:25):
don't think the interior presence to really maybe kind of,
I think you'd rather face the Kings. I feel more
comfortable than like as a fan of Lakers and like
waiting for that. I don't want to see that Steph
Curry game happen, you know what I mean? Or Clay
just you know, in game six, like he always seems
to do, has forty points in that Game six or
game five, you know what I mean. I just feel

(49:46):
more comfortable playing the younger team in the Kings.

Speaker 1 (49:49):
All Right, I gotta bring Nick into this conversation here,
So Nick, you know this King's team.

Speaker 2 (49:53):
Well, I can't imagine.

Speaker 1 (49:54):
What it's going to be like tomorrow in Sacramento for
a Game seven and against the defending champions. But if
the Kings were to win this game in advance on
against the Lakers, how do you see that matchup?

Speaker 7 (50:06):
I like it for the Kings just because I think
their youth has shown to be an advantage just in
their legs, and they've been able to go back and forth,
you know, certainly limited travel has helped. They're just taking
a bus back and forth between Sacramento and San Francisco,
and so you're gonna have a short turnaround going from
Game seven into the next series against the Lakers. So

(50:27):
I like their youth. I think they've got some lineup versatility.
So Bonus, I think is due to break out. If
not tonight, hopefully he can have more success against the Lakers.
I've been kind of waiting for him to show. But
credit to the Warriors, between Loony and Draymond, they've been
beating him up.

Speaker 1 (50:43):
Yeah, I'm not going to give the Kings game seven.
I'm with Jeff on this one. The Warriors could still
find a way to advance in this thing, but for sure.

Speaker 3 (50:50):
But again, by the way, soonis an Ad might be
like the softest seven foot matchup where we're going to
see there's like two guys that don't really want to
touch each other that are seven feet tall. Ad to
me is one of the most frustrating players I ever
seen in my life. Well, he's not playing well.

Speaker 2 (51:09):
You know, here's the thing about the Lakers right now.

Speaker 3 (51:11):
He should average thirty three points a game.

Speaker 1 (51:14):
He should, but he does. Lebron is in the same position. Guys.
Here's here's the fact. If you watch this series.

Speaker 3 (51:22):
Two points a game, he's just chilling sometimes.

Speaker 2 (51:24):
Yeah, thirty eight exactly, And that's the point.

Speaker 1 (51:27):
In other words, you're watching Lebron and ad in this
playoff series against the Grizzlies. They both had multiple off games,
you know, after that twenty twenty game that Lebron had,
he played awful in game five, and neither one of
them really was a key. Last night it was, you know, Lebron.

Speaker 3 (51:48):
Lebron has seemed to me in this series to be
pacing himself like he's been to me. It looks like
to me he has been very diligent with how much
effort he's going to give in these games. And I
think he's been trying to figure out which guys on
the team he can trust in each game, because we've

(52:10):
seen so far in certain games that it's not there's
no there's no set and stone third guy right. Sometimes
it's Reeves, sometimes just hotch it more, sometimes it's Russell,
and the early games he's trying to figure out who
that player is going to be, and that's taking away
some of the opportunities for him to score. Plus again,
he's thirty eight. I think he's just he just can't

(52:31):
do the thirty five you know ten and eight night anymore.
And that's just what's why. It's why Anthony Davis is there,
that's his job. They brought Ad in to do this
when Lebron is this old. Ad is supposed to be
the guy to go score thirty points a game.

Speaker 1 (52:50):
Well, on the other side, I want to get into
the whole load management thing, which was designed to preserve
the health of star players once the playoffs, and that
has backfired on a number of teams.

Speaker 2 (53:02):
And we'll explain why.

Speaker 1 (53:04):
This is Fox Sports Saturday, Steve Hartman and Jeff Schwartz
here on this beautiful Saturday once again, we are live
from the tyraq dot com studios. I really wanted to
talk to you, Jeff, on this whole load management thing,
not just concerning the NBA, but just sports in general.

(53:24):
So I'm gonna, as usual, turn back the clock as
I often do on this show. Nineteen eighty nine All
Star Game Baseball All Star Game was in Anaheim, and
they used to still have a old timers game, which
was ridiculous. You see a bunch of fat, overweight old
guys out in the baseball field, but they used to
have this old timers game and sitting there before the

(53:46):
game was Warren Spott, who was the winning its left
handed pitcher in the history of Major League Baseball three
hundred and sixty three wins. At age forty two with
the Milwaukee Braves, he not only had a record of
twenty three and seven, he led the National League with
twenty two complete games. And it was at that time,
route the late eighties early nineties, when we started seeing

(54:08):
a little pushback on complete games, sort of the introduction
Dennis Secrecy with the A's of these one inning.

Speaker 2 (54:15):
Close out relief pitchers.

Speaker 1 (54:17):
And I asked him, I said, how is it possible
that you were able to complete twenty two games at
the age of forty two?

Speaker 2 (54:22):
And he just laughed.

Speaker 1 (54:23):
He goes, you know, the idea that somehow less is
more is wrong. He said, my arm was stronger in
September than it was in April. You condition yourself to
build strength over the course.

Speaker 2 (54:39):
Of an entire year.

Speaker 1 (54:41):
You know, we talk about the NBA and John Stockton,
Carl Malone playing by the way in an NBA that
was far more physical than it is today. When I
say never missed games, Malone never played less than eighty
games in any season until that last year with the
Lakers and Stockton in nineteen seasons played every every single
game seventeen times. A forty year old Michael Jordan in

(55:04):
his last year with the Wizards played all eighty two games.
So this fallacy that somehow taking twenty games off a
year is going to preserve you once you get into
the postseason is a lie. It is a complete lie.
And I want to take your own experience in the NFL,

(55:25):
because are we going to see guys suddenly say, especially
when the NFL will go to an eighteen game season,
although I anticipate there'll be a second bye week when
they do that, of guys saying, well, wait a second.
You know, I got a lot of guaranteed money. Now
this is sort of new in the NFL, more guaranteed money.
I'll take off four games, you know, because I'll preserve myself.

Speaker 2 (55:47):
So I'm one hundred percent come playoffs.

Speaker 1 (55:50):
So all that being said, what is your stance on
this load management beneficial to athletes in terms of the
games that matter most at the end.

Speaker 3 (56:01):
Well, the load management thing in the NBA was supposed
to be so when you come to the playoffs, you're
able to play in the playoffs and it's it's what's
not working right, Yeah, So like that's you know, that's
the things it was supposed to do and continues to
supposed to make sure that you're able to play this
time of year.

Speaker 1 (56:20):
And I don't know that Michael Jordan play at the
end of the year. You know, when he came back,
he played eighty two games all three seasons in ninety six,
ninety seven, and ninety eight and played obviously every game
in the playoffs and won championships all three years. Where
did this idea come that if you take off twenty
games during the regular season, somehow you'll be better prepared
to show up and play at an elite level. Because

(56:42):
getting back to the whole Lebron ad here's all we're
seeing so far from both these guys and missed a
lot of games this year. They can't put together back
to back great games. They'll have a good game, yeah,
and then they take a game off and then they
come back up with a good game.

Speaker 2 (56:55):
It's not working with them.

Speaker 3 (56:56):
Lebron might be just age he's thirty eight, Yes he is,
then that's fair for me, Lebron and be like, you
know what, maybe just you know, thirty eight, it's not
gonna be quite the same, all right. So the thing
about the load management and the NFL is never gonna happen
is that the team just won't pay you if you're
not going to play something. They wouldn't do it. Like
if you're just like, yeah, I'm not gonna You've already
guaranteed contracts, though not everyone does, well a lot of

(57:18):
guys now do if guys start taking games off for
load management. I promise you the owners will, we will like, hey,
let's redo the CBA immediately, like they'll find a ways
not pay guys, but also eighteen games versus eighty two
games and whatnot. The load management is supposed to supposed
to make sure that guys are able to put the postseason,
and obviously that has not been the case for you know,

(57:41):
a Kawhi Leonard this year. It worked in Toronto obviously,
but there was talk that you know that Kawhi Leonard
had knee issues when the Clippers resigned him anyways, you know, yeah,
and they did anyway, So look, the data. I don't
have access to the data, but everyone will tell you.
The data shows you you or tells you that the

(58:02):
NBA players play too many games. Okay, I believe you
do that point. Well, here's the.

Speaker 2 (58:07):
Thing, all of a sudden, it's too many games.

Speaker 1 (58:09):
If you had the same number of games basically for
the entire history of the league, and all of a sudden,
now it's too many games.

Speaker 3 (58:16):
All right. So I had to do two a days
in the NFL, right, I was part of the old
I guess it's like two cbas Togo through CBA, and
I did and I did had to do. I had
to do uh two days. And people often ask me,
you know, the older younger players, like, how did you
do two days? I never did. H'm I didn't do

(58:37):
them in college. I didn't do in high school. I
did them in college as well. And I say, I
didn't know any better. You didn't know any better. There
was no choice. You just did. You had practice twice
a day. That's what That's what the sport was. You
practice twice a day. And when you talk about older
players playing every game, which they did, that's what the

(59:00):
sport was. There was no alternative, there was no load management.
So players didn't know any better. If Michael Jordan had
known that, it was basically quote allowed accepted that you
can take a back to back off if your body
doesn't feel right. He may or may not have done it.

(59:20):
I don't know, but it wasn't accepted back then, so
I think it's hard to just say, well, they didn't
do you're aboutly rights team. They did not do it
back then, But I also did two days bad then
because I didn't know any better, right, and it just
wasn't a thing that NBA players did twenty thirty, forty
fifty years ago. But now they do, and look, it
seems that is a consumer I'll tell you I don't

(59:42):
like it because when I go buy tickets to a
basketball game, I don't know if the guys I'm buying
tickets to go watch are going to play. Kind of stinks.
I saw a Lakers a couple of years ago in
in Charlotte lebron ad both didn't play. It felt like
a big giant waie to spend two hundred fifty bucks
on tickets, good se seats and the two best players
just didn't play that game. It's not good for consumers,

(01:00:07):
but it's accepted now, so that's why guys do it.

Speaker 4 (01:00:09):
Well.

Speaker 2 (01:00:10):
I've shared this story of the last couple of weeks
you'll love this. So I have for a friend of
mine who.

Speaker 1 (01:00:15):
Has had floor seats for the Clippers since nineteen eighty four,
all the way back from the left San Diego came
to LA, to the old LA Sports Arena. He has
two tickets. He kepp two others he's trying to unload.
Maybe you're interested in these tickets. All right, let me
get tell you your seats. Here's what you get for
sports arena. So this was, yeah, the old sports arena.

(01:00:35):
It doesn't exist anymore, all right. So you have two
floor seats. Are the seats directly next to the visitors bench,
so you're literally sitting on the floor next to the
visitors bench. You also get obviously VIP parking.

Speaker 2 (01:00:53):
You get a.

Speaker 1 (01:00:53):
VIP dinner every night that's included, and access to the
VIP bathroom, which might be the most important thing. These
two tickets season total cost three hundred and thirty six
thousand dollars for two tickets for the season. By the way,
you can pay that off and four equal payments in

(01:01:13):
consecutive months of eighty four thousand a month if you
like to do that, Jeff, So you can get those tickets.
The problem for him trying to load those tickets right now,
especially turn the playoffs, is exactly what we're talking about. Well,
what exactly am I getting? I mean, what am I
getting for those tickets? If you're telling me that the
two guys that you paid eighty five million dollars to

(01:01:36):
you are going to show up for less than half
the games, or even half the games, or even sixty
percent of the games. I'm not paying that kind of
money for those tickets.

Speaker 3 (01:01:44):
Well, I mean, I think it's going to be pretty
interesting what the Clippers do next with the new arena,
right Like, if you.

Speaker 2 (01:01:50):
Are what can they do? Those two guys are under contract.

Speaker 1 (01:01:54):
They gutted their drafts for Paul George because Kawhi said,
I will sign with you only if you get Paul George. Uh,
they signed it away. Kawhi.

Speaker 2 (01:02:05):
Believe me.

Speaker 1 (01:02:05):
Here, you got Steve Bomber, who, according to Forbes is
still the tenth wealthiest person on the planet, worth an
excess of ninety billion dollars, and he has no control
over his own team. I know it's all in the
hands of Kawhi Leonard, no questions asked.

Speaker 3 (01:02:23):
I don't mean the NBA has this is what you know?
The NBA is a players league, right, This is what
you get the downside to the players league as you
get a situation where you know, you give Kawhi this
money and now you're opening up a new arena with
your one thousand and three toilets, and I love, I
love getting more toilets, the better, And.

Speaker 2 (01:02:44):
Exactly, you can never have enough toilets.

Speaker 3 (01:02:47):
You think about the Clippers, man, yeah, how many people
are going to go to this arena in Englewood.

Speaker 1 (01:02:52):
Well, by the way that thing is being built, my
son just drove by it a couple of days ago.

Speaker 2 (01:02:56):
It is going to be spectacular.

Speaker 3 (01:02:58):
No, it's going to be great.

Speaker 1 (01:02:59):
But if these tickets here are three hundred and thirty
six thousand dollars for two tickets, Now imagine what they're
going to be in that new arena.

Speaker 3 (01:03:06):
There's just not Clippers fans.

Speaker 1 (01:03:09):
And that's that's the other thing, especially now we just
saw the Clippers worst case scenario, right, the Clippers, you know,
Kawhi Leonard for two games, look like wow, he's the
best player on the court against his sons, and then
he sits out the rest of the series and they
go down.

Speaker 2 (01:03:24):
And now the Lakers have moved on to the second round.

Speaker 4 (01:03:26):
Hey.

Speaker 2 (01:03:26):
By the way, Fox Sports Radio is twenty twenty three.

Speaker 2 (01:03:47):
All right, let's find out what is trending right now.

Speaker 1 (01:03:50):
Nick Cope is a back So I have the Kings
menu dizine load management. I don't remember Fox or Simona
sitting out all that many games. No, it was really
an issue for the Kings this year at all.

Speaker 7 (01:04:02):
They really good team chemistry and togetherness. I think Mike
Brown coming in has been You cannot under sell how
key Mike Brown has been to their success this season.

Speaker 1 (01:04:12):
By the way, you bring up the big point, the
big word chemistry. Yep. So this is another thing that
people forget about load management. If you don't have these
guys all playing together for a majority of the season
and just think, hey, we'll throw them out there for
the postseason and they'll figure it out, that's not going
to happen either.

Speaker 3 (01:04:30):
Great.

Speaker 7 (01:04:31):
Yeah, so that's work to the King's success We'll see
if it pays off for them on Sunday. But we
got the NFL Draft still going on. We saw puppies
on the screen for a while there in the sixth round,
but that's we've moved on from that. We're now on
to the seventh round. Some of the notable names off
the board in the sixth Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee to
the Eagles, Penn State receiver Parker Washington to the Jaguars,

(01:04:53):
Kansas State running back Deuce Vaughan to the Cowboys. Vaughn
is the son of a Cowboys scout. Pretty cool story there.
He was a mo in the Cowboys draft room. Patriots
took LSU receiver Kayshawn Boody and Liberty receivod Mario Douglas.
Patriots also drafted Michigan State punter Bryce Behringer after they
took Maryland kicker Chad Ryland to the fourth round. New

(01:05:14):
England's the first team in twenty three years to take
a kicker and a punter in the same draft. Earlier,
the Lions traded running back DeAndre Swift to the Eagles
after Detroit drafted Alabama running back Jamiir gibbson the first
round on Thursday, So that is yet another Georgia Bulldog
headed to the Eagles that Athens to Philly Pipeline. They
have drafted now five Georgia Bulldogs in the last two years.

(01:05:37):
They took Keeley Ringo earlier today in the fourth round.
Some other notable names Georgia quarterback Stats and Bennett. He's
going to the Rams, Fresno State quarterback Jake Hanner to
the Saints, UCLAQB Dorian Thompson Robinson to the Browns Penn
State Sean Clifford. He's going to the Packers. BYU quarterback
jarn Hall going to the Vikings. Colts took four order

(01:06:00):
quarterback Anthony Richardson with a fourth pick on Thursday. Owner
Jim Mersey said today that even if they held the
number one overall pick, Richardson still would have likely been
their choice. He also said if Richardson was not available
to them when they were on the clock at number four,
Will Levice would have likely been the pick for them.

Speaker 2 (01:06:19):
There and the.

Speaker 7 (01:06:20):
NBA Sixers coach Doc Rivers, Sai Joel and beat is
downfull for Monday's game one of the Eastern Conference semi finals.
Against the Celtics with that knee injury. Game one between
the Nuggets and Sons Western Conference semi's coming up tonight
at eight thirty Eastern. In baseball, we've got some finals.
Royals have been struggling. They age edge the Twins three
to two. Pirates keep on rolling, beat the National six

(01:06:40):
to three. Pittsburgh has now won nine of ten. Tigers
top the Orioles seven to four. Game one of a
doubleheader between those two teams today and then Braves and
Mets were rained out. That pushes back Max Scherzer's return
from suspension back at day from Monday to Tuesday. Steve Harmon,
Jeff Schwartz back to you guys.

Speaker 2 (01:06:58):
All right, Nick, thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (01:06:59):
Once again, we're how many live from the tyraq dot
com studios. Lawrence Frank, who's the president of basketball Operation
for the Clippers. Can we hear a little sound from
this guy, because there's there's a couple of things that
he's been talking about that are very interesting as far
as the future of that franchise.

Speaker 2 (01:07:15):
Let's hear from him. Injuries suck.

Speaker 9 (01:07:18):
They suck, but they happen, you know, for quime PG
for everything they put into their their bodies to be
healthy at this time and to be injured, it's it's
devastating for them.

Speaker 2 (01:07:30):
They're agonized, it's it's painful.

Speaker 9 (01:07:32):
But I just I feel for our fans who have
who have been there every step of the way, and
for Steve who's given us all the resources to try
to achieve our goal each and every year, which is
to win a championship. So that's that's hard. Yet at
the same time, when you take a step back, what
I don't want to do is have the injuries or

(01:07:53):
how hard we fought in the postseason to mask a
disappointing regular season. We have to be honest with ourselves
and we have to look in the mirror. It starts
with me, and we have to get back to honoring
and respecting the regular season.

Speaker 1 (01:08:09):
All right, here's the difference for the Clippers as opposed
to many organizations. So Clippers had the highest payroll.

Speaker 2 (01:08:15):
In the NBA this year, number one payroll.

Speaker 1 (01:08:17):
In fact, Steve Bomber will have to pay out because
of the luxury tax and everything else, about three hundred
and seventy five million dollars, okay, and again for a
man worth ninety billion dollars. That's not going to break
his bank account. So this guy can throw around as
much money as he wants and it's not a problem
for him, considering he could literally buy the entire league.

(01:08:38):
That being said, Frank is also saying that they are
anxious to extend the contracts of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George,
which has got to be really good news for these guys.
I mean, wow, we don't even have to play. We
have two years left on our contracts, so you want
to extend our deals even further. So, I mean this is.

Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
Look at NFL thing where you get cap relief, right deal.

Speaker 1 (01:09:01):
No cap relief at all. And and by the way,
Frank also said they knew that Kawhi Leonard had at
tormentiscus after Game two, which is funny because on the
injury report they just said he had a knee sprain,
so they may be facing a fine on that one,
but to double down on look at I've talked to

(01:09:22):
Clippers fans. Their attitude about this team is blow it up,
it's not working. But the Clippers have a completely different
view of this and they want to extend the deals
of Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Hoping that it's going
to change. These guys are suddenly going to start playing
seventy games this season. It's not gonna happen.

Speaker 3 (01:09:42):
The most interesting part of that conversation is what he
said about honoring the regular season. Yeah, is it seems
like they're kind of tired of the load management. If
it's not going to play, it's not going to play
in the postseason, which I totally understand, right, Like you, again,
the trade off of not playing the regular is that
you're going to have the payoff and the postseason. That

(01:10:04):
that's the point of it, right, And but so if
you don't have that trade off, then you're not going
to want to do the regular season part of it.
And for the Clippers that you didn't have that trade
off this season. It's nice to hear someone who had
a you know, who did not live up to expectations
say that. You know, I know that disappointments different more
than failure. You know, that was that made the rounds
this week with what Yannis said. But it's nice to

(01:10:27):
have an executive say, yeah, we didn't live up to expectations.
We we in a sense, we failed Again, the word
failure is a lot different than the word disappointment. I
mean that if you had asked Jannis was a season
a disappointment, that would have been a much different answer
from him. I think he just would have said, yes,
when you say failure, athletes take that more more personally.

Speaker 1 (01:10:49):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:10:49):
I only think there was a personal attack on him.
I would argue that it absolutely was a failure. Right,
you were the number one seed. Your goal was winning
a championship. Did you win the championship? No, you failed and.

Speaker 2 (01:11:00):
You break thirteen free throws in that last game.

Speaker 3 (01:11:03):
And you you also you had to you had to
lead at home and you and you blew it. Yeah,
you fail on the season. It doesn't mean you're a
failure or your organization is a failure. But this season
is a failure. You know, I said it was great,
like I'll show my kids that great. It was great
perspective on life. I liked it. You know, some days
are as good to me as are bad. You're gonna
win in sports, you're gonna lose all great, But in

(01:11:25):
the big picture, expectations matter, right, And the expectation was
for you to in the championship. The expectation for the Kings,
for example, right, like the Kings were to lose to
the Warriors tomorrow. This season's not a failure, of course not.
They weren't expected to be in this spot and to
be in you know, in in the quarterfinals, right if

(01:11:46):
they win, it's all. It's all expectation based. Is how
we view the success of your team or not? So
as nine year an executive say, yeah, we didn't do
what we had to do in the regular season, and
we need to honor that a little more often and
a little hardy next season.

Speaker 1 (01:12:01):
And they're four years together, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George,
since they've been Clippers, and four years have missed a
combined two hundred and eighty two games. I don't the
idea of extending their deals any further until they can
actually prove they can show up four games just seems insanity,
Absolutely insanity. By the way, I wanted to also, Jeff,

(01:12:21):
since we're catching up. We haven't spoken in a while.
On the other side, I want to get out a
little early because I want to have some time. On
the other side, major League Baseball. You and I are
both big baseball fans, and they made some dramatic changes
in their game addressing problems they had and whether or
not the NBA may take a look at what Major

(01:12:42):
League Baseball did this year and take a hard look
at the game they've got going on and maybe make
some adjustments that could help their game.

Speaker 2 (01:12:50):
We'll break it all down. This is Fox Sports Saturday.

Speaker 10 (01:12:53):
I've made a shots peave it, Steve Hart, Jeff Schwartz,
Fox Smart Saturday.

Speaker 1 (01:13:03):
Once again, we are coming alive from the Tairaq dot
com studios. All right, So, Jeff, you and I are
baseball fans. And I went to a Dodger game a
couple of weeks ago. I actually went to a spring
training game, but this was first time I've been out
at Dodger Stadium this season. And the first thing that
I saw was something I never thought I would ever

(01:13:25):
see in my lifetime, and that was a running clock
at a baseball game. And as a traditional as, my
initial thought was, this is bad. Baseball is not a
game that has a clock.

Speaker 2 (01:13:35):
That's sort of the.

Speaker 1 (01:13:36):
Beauty of the game. And as I sat down with
this Dodger game, went to get some knee and I
looked up and suddenly it's the fourth inning.

Speaker 2 (01:13:43):
I'm like, Wow, this game is moving.

Speaker 1 (01:13:47):
And when you think about Major League Baseball and theo Epstein, who,
of course I first got to know when he was
with the Padres organization as sort of a young guy
on the rise under Larry Lukino. And then when Lukeino
went to the Red Sox, he made theoep Sein a
his general manager. They went a World Series for the
first time in eighty four years, and he goes to
the Cubs, they went a World Series for over.

Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
One hundred years, first time in over one hundred years.

Speaker 1 (01:14:10):
And it was his analytics that really brought baseball to
a different level, and not necessarily a more entertaining level.
And now working with Major League Baseball, the best idea
of undoing the mess that he essentially created. Let's bring
in the guy that understands it. And all these moves,
at least for me, are working. The idea of the

(01:14:31):
pitch clock is working. Limiting the throws to first base
is working. We're seeing more stolen bases than ever. The
abolition of the shift is working. We're seeing more offensive baseball.
It's all working, and well, I get your thought on that,
but I also want to bring up now maybe the
NBA and I'll look at I'll admit I think the
playoffs have been pretty entertaining so far in the NBA,

(01:14:53):
but the regular season is not. I think the NBA
needs to take a hard look at the game they're playing,
and maybe he's take a hint from Major League Baseball
that some drastic changes can actually work for your sport.

Speaker 3 (01:15:07):
A couple things with baseball quick before the basketball thing.
I've not been to a game yet under the new rules.
Last year, a Triple A game in Charlotte. They had
some of the pitchclock stuff or the implement in the
minor leagues. And with your young kids, sometimes the game's
going faster. It's good. I like it. But I will
say that I think the pitch clock is and kind

(01:15:31):
of the speed of the game, speeding things up is
better suited for the TV on its than the audience
in person, right, because I think when you go to
a baseball game, I've never been to a baseball game.
I thought to myself, Man, I'm here too long, right,
Like if you were in a baseball game, you you
blocked your day out to a baseball game, right. So,
but I think on television and I watch a ton
of baseball, so unfortunately my team is just it's just

(01:15:52):
painfully boring this year in the Giants, your padres are
way more exciting to watch. Like the game being over
two hours and twelve minutes is great, Right, it's someone
sitting at home watching baseball. But I can understand being
at the game thinking, yeah, it's kind of going pretty fast.
I get I get that thought. For the NBA, the
NBA postseason is a completely different sport than the regular season. Yeah,

(01:16:15):
there's almost no reason to watch the regular season we
had this year alone right now. The Lakers are a
little bit different because of the trade of Westbrook and
kind of the town they brought on, also the health
of Lebron and Anthony Davis. But there are seven seed
just beat a two seed pretty handily, right in a
six game series. The Miami Heat, an eight seed, beat
a one seed right, Like the red season is didn't

(01:16:38):
feel important at all. It's just getting to the postseason
and figuring out once you get there. And I don't
think the the idea of a mid season tournament. Who cares? Like?

Speaker 1 (01:16:48):
Who?

Speaker 3 (01:16:49):
How's that me? As a fan? And again, I've liked
I watch more baseball than basketball, to be fair, But
as a fan, why would I'm a Lakers fan. Why
do I care if they win the post seed season tournament? Like, well,
I don't care about now a lot of fan bases
who cares about a midseason tournament? I want to win.
I want to win the postseason tournament. So I don't
know how that helps anyone. Some of these new rule changes.

(01:17:14):
I get they're doing something with the cap to make
it so where you kind of have to keep a
team together and you can't really go over a certain number,
and it's the penalty is so large that we might
not see super team so much. And those things might
be good for the sport, would argument, and probably good
for the sport, But the idea of like of like yeah, yeah,
oh yeah, Midsey's and tournament, that's really gonna get me
going to watch a sport that.

Speaker 2 (01:17:33):
No, it's not, Come on, no, it's not.

Speaker 1 (01:17:35):

Code Draft. Yeah, it's not as easy as just. I mean,

(01:17:55):
look at the proliferation of three point shots. Uh really
started with this success of the Golden State Warriors. The
problem for all these teams is they don't have Steph
curR and Klay Thompson shooting threes, and so we've seen
a complete change in terms of just the.

Speaker 2 (01:18:10):
Dynamic of the game.

Speaker 1 (01:18:11):
And honest, I don't know how he can change that.
I don't know how you can change the game. A
couple of changes I would make. I would incorporate what
they do in college, and that is the one plus one,
the idea of the penalty. You'd make one free throw
to get a second free throw. I think it would
add a little drama at the end of some of
these NBA games. I'm actually also a fan of the

(01:18:32):
elimination of quarters. To be honest with you, I love
the fact that college basketball has two has It's the
only level of basketball men or women that only has
two halves. And I sort of dig it. I mean,
the idea of trying to navigate a twenty minute period
instead of two to twelve minute periods, whatever it might be.
How about shortening the games from forty eight to forty minutes.

(01:18:55):
I mean if you're talking about load management, maybe that
would be another a way to keep guys on the
core for the majority of the games instead of sitting out.
But to me, Major League Baseball I think made the
right moves to make their game better and I think
it definitely helps as far as television is concerned, like
you said, even more so at the park. But I
think the NBA needs to take a long look. As

(01:19:18):
you just said, it's unwatchable the regular season. The only
reason to watch is Ernie, Shack, Kenny and Charles. I mean,
what else am I watching regular season NBA basketball? So
I don't know what the answers are, but there's a
problem and it needs to be addressed.

Speaker 3 (01:19:35):
But Steve, the players have to acknowledge as a problem too. Yeah,
Like the players have to say, like we need to
speed the game up, like I think baseball players wanted this,
like they wanted the games to go faster. So you
have to the NBA players have to want the regular
season to change to make.

Speaker 1 (01:19:54):
It happen well, and it has to obviously be an
agreement on both sides. It will be interesting. Sure, look
it they're not gonna say anything during the playoffs. And
like I said, I've been entertained by these NBA playoffs
so far, and I'm really looking forward to this semi
final rounds. I think there's some tremendous matchups starting tonight
to see. You know, Phoenix can do a number on

(01:20:15):
the Nuggets. But I just think that they're going to
have to figure this out. And I guarantee behind the scenes,
owners are complaining because you got to sell tickets, and
if you're not giving them the right product, people are
not buying. The NFL Draft is almost over. Winners and
losers are early breaks. We'll tell you coming up next.

(01:21:11):
changed with Rock Purdy being the last player selected a
year ago.

Speaker 2 (01:21:14):
The next thing you know, no, well.

Speaker 1 (01:21:16):
The guy was the starting quarterback in the NFC Championship game.
I'm glad you jumped in on me on this one,
all right, the San Francisco forty nine Ers, I think
you will concede this if you remove quarterback from the equation.
There's not a more talented roster. There may be, there

(01:21:37):
are equal, but there is not a more talented roster
than the forty nine ers. Impact players on both sides
of the football, multiple impact players on both sides of
the football. That being said, the forty nine ers seem
extremely comfortable with the idea that Rock Party or Sam
Darnold or Trey Lance is more than sufficient to get

(01:21:59):
them to where they desired to be, and that is
to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Are they dreaming? Do they
need to address that quarterback situation? Are you sold at
Brock Party? When he comes back from his injury, is
going to be the kind of guy that we saw
at the end of last year, a weekend and week out,
amazingly efficient. What do you think that's happening in San Francisco.

Speaker 3 (01:22:23):
So I don't recall, and you obviously have a longer
memory than me when it comes to football. A team
that has been this good, that's a quarterback away. Look.
I think if you give them twelve other options, quarterback options,
like if you put Cousins, Kirk Cousins, who most people
think is like just a touch above average, right on

(01:22:47):
this team, they're absolutely the favorite to win the NFC,
like right now, right they just need a little bit
more at that position. Right some cases, I do not
think brock Party will have the season he had last year.
I think it's nearly impossible he has that season, Like
it's thirteen touchdowns, one interception to some absurd numbers. I

(01:23:11):
think they're trying to find an answer someone else. They
don't have anyone else. This is what happens when you
miss on your top quarterback in Trey Lance, when you
trade up to get a quarterback and he's not your guy.
This is what you're left with. And you're lucky that
brock Party is this good for a seventh round draft pick.
You're thinking your lucky stars that he's this good, because

(01:23:34):
otherwise you'd be in an even worse situation than you're
in now. But what are they going to do? There
were rumors of Lamar Jackson, very Aaron Rodgers. You don't
have the capital to do that, so you're stuck. You
have to hope that Brock party does everything well. But again,
you have to everything has to align for Brock Party
to go to Philly and win, right, Like you're just

(01:23:55):
not often does the lesser quarterback win those games?

Speaker 1 (01:24:00):
Right?

Speaker 2 (01:24:00):
But let's build in.

Speaker 1 (01:24:02):
Okay, they didn't just pick up Sam Donald by accident.
You know how this all works. It's obvious that the
Lynch and you know, Shanahan were very high on Sam
Donald coming out of the draft, and obviously it didn't
work with the Jets, didn't work in Carolina, but he's
still an extremely young quarterback and we've seen some great
resurrections over the years. I mean the Raiders when I

(01:24:26):
joined him, had a guy named Jim Plunkett who was
the number one overall pick and completely forgotten. In fact,
the Raiders picked him up as a free agent after
he got released by the forty nine ers, and he
just sat, he didn't play a single.

Speaker 2 (01:24:38):
Game, and two years later he's winning a Super Bowl.

Speaker 1 (01:24:41):
Are we missing how did Sam Donald come from just
a few years ago? You know it was Baker Mayfield
or Sam Donald who used to be the number one
pick in that draft to a complete nobody. Sam, Were
you sold on Sam Donald out of the USC.

Speaker 3 (01:24:58):
He's also like twenty five, that's my point. Super young,
he's super young. I mean the idea that Kyle Shannahan.

Speaker 1 (01:25:07):
Ye, so Kyle Shanahan believes he's younger than some of
the guys that have been in this league.

Speaker 3 (01:25:11):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:25:11):
Anyway, Kyle Shannan is a big believer in Kyle Shanahan, right.
His whole idea what Brock Purty is it proves I
can put anybody in that position with my offense, they're
going to be successful. But Sam Donald has got more
physical tools than Brock Party.

Speaker 3 (01:25:27):
Oh absolutely, And I am with you there. I mean, look,
you look at at Trey Lance, who's who coming off
an injury, who I just don't think they believe in, right,
And you look at at Brock Purtty coming off an injury,
and Sam Donald's the healthiest one. Sam Donald probably gonna
get reps and OTAs first at the moment, right sure,
And I absolutely think he could be a starter. But
I just and we've seen you know, Ryan Tannehill, you

(01:25:49):
mentioned Alex Smith. We've seen players resurrect careers on second teams, right,
And al Smith did some of that in San Francisco
before he went to Kansas City. We we just haven't
seen it like happen to winning Super Bowls set often, right,
So that that really I mean Drew Brees, I guess
in essence, do you resurrect his career? He just he

(01:26:09):
was good in San Diego, right, He.

Speaker 1 (01:26:11):
Was good in San Diego, he made a Pro Bowl,
and then he got hurt the following year.

Speaker 3 (01:26:15):
So the second, third, fourth team thing you you typically
aren't winning championship. That's what the Niners want. It's so
they had the roster they have is to win the championship.
And you have to look at the quarterbacks they have
and you have to think about this and the NFC
it doesn't have great quarterbacks, right. But is Sam Darnold
taking a Niners team on the road to beat the Eagles?

Speaker 1 (01:26:37):
Well, I think and you mentioned the Eagles, and I'm
glad you mentioned the Eagles right now. First of all,
this is one of the things I can't figure out
about the NFL.

Speaker 2 (01:26:47):
The continued being namber.

Speaker 1 (01:26:49):
With the Dallas Cowboys, They're not even relative relative in
their own division. I mean, if you look at since
the Cowboys won their last Super Bowl, which by the way,
is also the last year they even made the conference
championship game, do you want to compare their track record
to the Eagles over those years. I mean, it's not
even close. The Eagles have been able to do it
with multiple coaches. Let me ask you this, mister Chiefs fan,

(01:27:13):
Now that the Eagles have added to their roster three
more Georgia defensive players to the two they added a
year ago on the draft, can you concede the fact
right now that the Eagles on paper are better than
the Chiefs.

Speaker 3 (01:27:29):
I thought they were on paper better than the Chiefs
hanging the Super Bowl too. Yeah, look, I don't know.
I don't think that changes.

Speaker 1 (01:27:36):
Well, how much of an impact does Jalen Carter make
on that defense or even adding Nolan Smith.

Speaker 3 (01:27:41):
Well, the Nolan Smith thing is is more of just
like you know, this is probably Brandon Graham's last year
there and so having him maybe sit kind of learn
behind Brandon Graham is a huge value. But Jalen Carter
helps them with the run defense, which was which was
a trouble last year. We know they could rush the pace,
but they got mauled in in the run defense, and

(01:28:04):
that kind of fixes that problem. That Jalen Carter thing
is pretty interesting because people said the Jordan Davis, who's
who's was his teammate at Georgia and now with the Eagles,
was was a very calming influence in Jalen Carter's life,
that he was a good role model for Jalen Carter
and that you know, he kind of helped him out

(01:28:24):
win at Georgia and when he left, you know, the
Jalen Carter's attention to detail wasn't as good and you
know he just did you know that that his focus
wasn't as great. And I think pairing him back with
Jordan Davis who's on the Eagles, will get the most
out of Jalen Carter. And that's a good job by
the Eagles in my opinion, of knowing their personnel right

(01:28:45):
and knowing who they're drafting and knowing kind of backstory
between those players. So Jalen Carter's gonna help him stop
the run basically in year one, I think as he
learns to rush the passer a little bit better than
just brute forcing his way through, which we did in
college football. But dude, he is so good. I think
he's he's gonna be really good in the NFL. And

(01:29:07):
it makes them again. It makes it to where Jalen
Hurts doesn't have to do everything for the team, right,
Like there's a lot of times where Kansas City Mahomes
has to do a little bit more. The Jalen Hurts
will do will do for Philly, and Philly is with
the running backs they've done. They just traded for DeAndre Swift.
Like their offensive line is good, the defensive line is good.
They're going to be a problem as long as they

(01:29:28):
continue to build the roster the way they're doing it.

Speaker 1 (01:29:30):
And when we talk about how competitive the AFC is
right now with the Chiefs and the Bills and the Bengals,
I don't know what kind of impact Aaron Rodgers is
going to have with the Jets. And then you got
the NFC, and we talked about the forty nine ers, right,
the Eagles forty nine ers. But the difference between Jalen
Hurts and Brock Party is night and day. And after

(01:29:51):
that Where are you going next in the NFC? I mean,
where are you going with that? Who's the number three
even in the a NFC right now?

Speaker 3 (01:30:01):
So number one you say, Philly, number two or forty
nine ers? Yes, I mean number three is the Cowboys?
Are they? Yeah? They have to be. It doesn't mean
they're gonna do the third. I mean doesn't mean they're
gonna be you know, the third best. They were good
last year. It has to do the Cowboys. I'm with
you on the hype every year I get sucked into
it too. Yeah, they're very talented. It's god be the Cowboys.

(01:30:24):
You know. You know, if Justin Field is better this year,
you could maybe look at the at the Bears roster's
just not just not there.

Speaker 2 (01:30:32):
Whoa, You're gonna go from worse to.

Speaker 3 (01:30:34):
No no, no no, I'm just saying, like.

Speaker 1 (01:30:36):
Let me ask you this.

Speaker 2 (01:30:37):
Do you think the Bears if Fields.

Speaker 1 (01:30:41):
Makes it a big improvement, could the Bears go from
worse to first in that division?

Speaker 2 (01:30:49):
I mean, you got the Lions? Who Lions?

Speaker 1 (01:30:52):
To me? I guess is Golf going to repeat what
he did? I like the fact that he took a
quarterback and.

Speaker 3 (01:30:57):
They but Hooker might not be able to play most
of the year.

Speaker 1 (01:30:59):
Correct, And I like Hooker a lot, you know, I
know he's a little bit older. By the way, I
think he's the same age as Sam Darnold.

Speaker 3 (01:31:05):
I think he is.

Speaker 1 (01:31:08):
Uh, but I mean, and you look at Minnesota and
then obviously Green Bay with Jordan Love.

Speaker 3 (01:31:14):
I think the pack Look, I'll tell you what if
Jordan Love is just a little above average, the Packers
with a division, the Packers took a lot of talent
on their team, and they do believe in Jordan Love.
They do believe that he's good. I don't believe he's
Aaron Rodgers, but they believe he's good. But yeah, there's
not in the NFC. There's not a lot on the
Seattle is going to be I think Gino Smith is

(01:31:34):
going to be like he was the basically the back
half of the year, not the first half of the year.
So just kind of okay. Arizona is in full tank mode.
They have I think I saw they have thirteen or
fourteen draft picks for next season like that. They're in
Caleb Williams mode immediately, yes, and they're like they're gonna
get out that Colin Murray deal as soon as possible
as soon as as a humanly can. And you know,

(01:31:56):
so there there are. That's the other rams I think,
just talent wise. Again, so it's a very top heavy team. Right.
If everyone says healthy, they can be really good. But
you add a couple injuries here and there, just not
having it.

Speaker 2 (01:32:08):
Their offensive lines still.

Speaker 3 (01:32:10):
Yeah, they drafted at least a one lineman class were
just good. Look, the Giants are there obviously in the East.

Speaker 2 (01:32:18):
I mean, this is me.

Speaker 1 (01:32:19):
I mean if I'm thinking in terms of where the
AFC is right now, Sorry much, I mean yeah, all right.
On the other side, we're gonna get one more voice
talking about the NFL and the draft this year, and
that is our NFL insider here at Fox Sports Radio.
Adam Kaplan will join us next Steve Harbin, Jeff Schwartz
Fox Sports Saturday. We are live from the tai iraq

(01:32:42):
dot Com studios. Max Duggan finally got picked. Unfortunately he's
got He got picked by a team that obviously doesn't
need a quarterback.

Speaker 2 (01:32:51):
That would be the Chargers.

Speaker 1 (01:32:53):
But the TCU quarterback does go off the board in
the seventh round. We're down to the final few picks
of this twenty twenty three NFL Drafting or break it
all down of what we've seen over the last three days.
Our Fox Sports Radio NFL insider Adam Kaplan joins us
once again. All right, Adam, there's so many things to
talk about when I want to get one one out
of the way, and that's the Will Levis story. So

(01:33:15):
even a week ago, there was all this talk that
Levis was shooting up the board. Everybody was just tripping
over themselves to try to get Will Levis.

Speaker 2 (01:33:23):
Obviously that was not the case.

Speaker 1 (01:33:25):
Every single team had a shot to get Will Levis,
either at their existing draft position or moving up in
the draft.

Speaker 2 (01:33:31):
There were plenty of trades. Nobody moved up for Will Levis.
What happened?

Speaker 4 (01:33:36):
Why?

Speaker 1 (01:33:37):
How did it even get out there that suddenly Will
Levis was the guy to get when it turned out
he never was that guy.

Speaker 11 (01:33:43):
Yeah, so you know, I guess some kind of gambling
social media account put some story about how Will Levis
told I was told that the Panthers are going to
draft him. So I actually contacted the Panthers. I'm doing
I did TV this week for my friends at sports Grid,
Say want to know what the truth was? And so
did another company I was working with, Profobale Networks. So
I said, all right, I'll check into it. Panthers told

(01:34:03):
me they're not calling anyone till the day of the draft,
so I said, okay, thank you. So it's just it
was ridiculous. Here's what happened with Levis quarter in multiple sources.
He had two injuries, a turf two injury on one foot.
He had a left shoulder injury.

Speaker 4 (01:34:20):
And he heard it twice.

Speaker 11 (01:34:21):
There were separated shoulders of the fact they had to
pop the shoulder back at once, the left shoulder, I'm told,
so that certainly hurt him. But the big thing that
hurt him focus is the tape wasn't very good. You
can't make excuses in scouting. Oh let's just throw away
the twenty two take because it wasn't very good and
go to that great twenty one tape.

Speaker 4 (01:34:37):
It doesn't work that way, particularly at the quarterback position.

Speaker 3 (01:34:40):
It's being a quarterback position. I did believe the reports
that the Texans were not looking at quarterback at two.
There were enough people that I trusted in the industry,
guys that have been correct on other things before, and
that said they weren't taking a quarterback at two and
then obviously oops they did. Did you believe the reports
that they were to go defensive end, because I don't

(01:35:03):
think that they just decided on draft I have to
go quarterback.

Speaker 11 (01:35:05):
So I would say Jeff and my reporting, I and
others put out there that they probably would not draft
quarterback or two would either be Will Anderson or Tyree Wilson.
And then Wilson I'm told the problem was not the
medical the problems. He didn't work out for teams before
the draft. It's called an incomplete scouting report. It's hard
to pick a player in the first round and tell

(01:35:27):
your owner, hey, he didn't work out for us, but
we're still going to take them.

Speaker 4 (01:35:30):
So that's why they didn't.

Speaker 11 (01:35:31):
But the fact that they got Will Anderson, I look,
I know they had to find a way to do this.
It was very creative. They had a lot of draft capital.
Now we could debate whether Will Anderson's worth a third
pick overall. That's another discussion. But I got to tell
you that was pretty interesting that Nick Cassario did. I
give him credit. I've been pretty critical of him for
his massive mistake last year, and I said this before
the draft at sus Gardiner would wind up being the

(01:35:51):
best player of that draft, and so far he is
taking a guy that had injury issues in college at
Stingley who's talented. He also had injury issues last year.
But I give Cassirio credit for finding a way to
get this done.

Speaker 1 (01:36:03):
All right, speaking the best player in the draft, it's
conceivable the Eagles got the best player in this draft
and Jalen Carter, and then on top of that they
get Nolan Smith as well, who many had picked in
the top fifteen, and he goes thirty. Obviously, you're very
close to this Eagles organization, Adham, So what.

Speaker 2 (01:36:18):
Is the reaction right now?

Speaker 1 (01:36:20):
Because you know Jeff and I are both of the
same accord, and Jeff, as a chiefs guy, even conceded
the Eagles probably had a better roster going into last
year's Super Bowl. But what kind of impact will these
new wave of Georgia defensive players have for this team?

Speaker 11 (01:36:35):
Yeah, it's crazy three of them Ringo as well and
then won last year. But look, when you look at
the Egal situation, they lost a lot of players in
free agency, most of them they decided to walk away
from a couple they didn't, but It's just they could
not resign these players, so they moved on. The thing
with Jalen Carter is they've known for a while that
this is going to be their guy.

Speaker 4 (01:36:56):
He is a player.

Speaker 11 (01:36:58):
It's not just the one incident that we know of.
It's some issues with his teammates coaches. I'm also told
also going back to high school, he had issues with
his teammates. They had issues with him, and he needs
to grow up a little bit. The thing about him is,
though now this is a strong positive of the.

Speaker 4 (01:37:15):
Negative information we just talked about.

Speaker 11 (01:37:16):
As a football player on the field, you cannot really
question his effort just phenomenal. Like you don't see him
taking a play off. He just brings the energy and
the passion for the job. But when he's not playing,
sometimes he doesn't always do the right thing. But the
Eagles of research him thoroughly. They went through NFL security,
their own security department. They feel like they have an
understanding of what this player brings to the table, what

(01:37:38):
needs he has off the field, and they're going to
have to manage him.

Speaker 3 (01:37:41):
They know this. What are some other themes that they
came out of the first round for you, I mean
one for me was like, we were told this would
be a tight end heavy draft and it didn't end
up being a tight end heavy draft, but not in
the first round, right, and the one it went and
being a guy who didn't work out had a back injury,
which was kind of surprising me. Out of the first
one drafted is the one you mentioned, Tyree Wilson drop

(01:38:04):
because he didn't work out well, she can't worked out
for nobody ever, he never ran, he didn't work out
the entire offs yet.

Speaker 11 (01:38:10):
Yeah, I would say, I would say, like the one
that just floored me, and I talked to Lines about it,
but I still, you know, I'll accept what they said.
But I just first of all, to take a running
back in the first round, it's highly questionable. But to
take a what I call satellite back, a change up,
explosive back, but not a three down back because Jamior
gives no team sol as a three down back, and

(01:38:32):
David Montgomery's going to be their lead back. They're paying
him six million dollars to be that guy. So I
thought that was highly questionable. Now I'm sure they made
that trade out of six because the guy that they
want to right before, in Devin Weatherspoon, So I get that,
and then to take an off the ball linebacker at eighteen.

Speaker 4 (01:38:49):
Jack Campbell's a terrific player.

Speaker 11 (01:38:50):
By the way, I'm not criticizing him as a player,
but what they need is pass rushers. They don't. I mean,
could they need it. They need an insign insign linebacker, yes,
but that's it's a little questionable.

Speaker 4 (01:39:01):
I wasn't the only one who felt that way.

Speaker 11 (01:39:02):
Good NFL got I spooke with said that, but the
nice things are both very good football players. It's sound
like they they didn't reach for guys who weren't good.
It's just the value of the picks is queschable there.

Speaker 2 (01:39:11):
We know that Jim Merse says crazy things.

Speaker 1 (01:39:13):
He was even throwing it out on Twitter after they
took Anthony Richardson. What do you think Colts Fantasy? I
think we should go after Will Levis. All right, so
he's lost his mind, but I'm entertained by him alas
he's a good guy. But with Anthony Richardson going forth
overall and Nursey also said had they had the number
one overall pick, they would have taken Anthony Richardson. But

(01:39:35):
second in company, how do you think they're going to
approach the development of Anthony Richardson. How long is it
going to take before we realize whether this guy actually
has the ability to be a franchise quarterback or this
will go down as one of the biggest bus picks
in the top five of the NFL draft.

Speaker 11 (01:39:50):
Oh, it's definitely boom and buff. So this is interesting
to side so in my reporting on situation. First of all,
Gardner Minshaw signed there, not that they were going to
tell him, but he thought that that would have The
Cults were probably the team that could give them the
best chance to get starts in this season. And if
you fast forward now to what happened yesterday, I got
to give Chris Ballard credit. This is Chris has been

(01:40:10):
criticized I think rightfully so and though he hates the
moniker of being conservative, this is anything but a conservative
draft pick, there's no question.

Speaker 4 (01:40:18):
So then Steve, how's it going to be managed?

Speaker 11 (01:40:19):
So they're going to be heavy RPO based offense that
that that's to get him comfortable. This is the offense
that they're going to run anyway, but they're going to
do it even more so with this player. This is
what Shane Stake and ran in Philly. It's based on
kind of what they think they could do with him.
This will make him comfortable. I mean, he can be
a dropback passer because he's got a rocket arm. But

(01:40:39):
this is Look, they shook it up, and I give
them credit. Nobody knew this. They kept this thing quiet
because you saw all these mocks that had leves going there.
But a funny thing was the funny thing was now,
I don't know this. I have to ask them, what if?

Speaker 4 (01:40:52):
What if? What if so and traded up and took
a quarterback at three? What they? What if they? What
have they gone? With the cold? They traded out a
number four?

Speaker 11 (01:41:01):
I don't know that, but I'm just fascinated to see
if Levis would have been the guy on the trade back.
We won't know yet, but I'm going to ask them that.

Speaker 3 (01:41:07):
Going all the way back to the very top of
the draft in Bryce Young, is there any trepidation at
all with the Panthers that the Young would be an outlier?
You know, with the size and the success rates of
a quarterback, it's an outlier. If he were to succeed,
he kind of breaks the mold for quarterbacks that size.

(01:41:28):
Drafted that early.

Speaker 11 (01:41:30):
So, jeff My understanding of the situation was, is Scott
fitter or the GM of the Seahawks. Obvious, he's of
the Panthers. He was with the Seahawks when they drafted
Russell Wilson. He kind of knew and knows that you
could always build your body up. And Russell, most people
see Russell now, is all built but at five ten
and a half, and by the way, he's actually technically
a quitter inch taller than Bryce Young.

Speaker 4 (01:41:49):
It doesn't look like that, but he is. Technically.

Speaker 11 (01:41:52):
Russell built his body up quite a bit over a
series of years, and they think Bryce could could build it,
build his body up. And by the way, they were
not that they measured his body frame, but talking to
a team source like they were right up next to him,
they were kind of pleasantly surprised at his protae that
he was a little bigger than they thought. I can't
say that convinced them. They were pretty much going to
go that way. This is their thinking the whole time.

(01:42:13):
But what they love is his ability to process the
best processor they fought they thought of any quarterback, not
only in this draft, in years, and he's going to
be the franchise quarterback.

Speaker 4 (01:42:23):
I thought they had by the way, I thought they
had a very interesting draft.

Speaker 11 (01:42:25):
The kid Mingo they took as an absolute stud the
receiver in the second round.

Speaker 2 (01:42:28):
The test that CJ.

Speaker 1 (01:42:30):
Stroud failed miserably obviously had no impact on the text
and taking him second overall. I had never even heard
of this test. Obviously, I had heard about the wonderlack
and everything else. This was something about reaction time and
everything else. And his score was so bad that they
just said he's gonna plummet? Are they just making up

(01:42:52):
these tests at him as they go? I mean, Jeff
and I again were talking about this early. I know
what I saw him do against Georgia. I didn't see
any test paper in front of him or anything else,
but the idea that he can't react to he was.
He did to that defense what no quarterback came close
to doing to that defense. And I think the Texans
got themselves a hell of a quarterback. But what does

(01:43:14):
it say about this analysis over analysis, new tests they're
creating all the time, and how valid they are in
terms of what team's mindsets are going into the draft.

Speaker 4 (01:43:24):
Yeah, it's actually been out for between three and five years.
S two's test.

Speaker 11 (01:43:27):
It's a cognitive test, so what what what happens is
they take that, you take several factors including tape, and
you see what happens on on throws and how these
players react. But it's a small part of the process.
The Panthers made it pretty clear that yeah, they used it,
but it's it's down the list, and other teams said
the same thing to me, So it look, you're the

(01:43:49):
thing is the wonder is just not working for the
ability for quarterbacks.

Speaker 4 (01:43:53):
Now.

Speaker 11 (01:43:53):
I remember talking to Rick Spilm, the former of Vikings
general manager, about this, that you could bring a guy
up to the board, it could be brilliant, but that
doesn't show you what happens when guys are coming at you,
and there has to be another test and this is
one of them. Of By the way, teams have their
own tests for this. You should know that it's not
just the S two. They have their own testing.

Speaker 3 (01:44:13):
Well, last question for me, very quickly, sorry, Lamar Jackson
and the Ravens got their deal done and Adam felt
like a lot of drama for what I think a
lot of us felt was inevitable. There was no other option, right,
like the Ravens wanted Lamar and no one else was calling,
and just felt like this was.

Speaker 4 (01:44:31):
Going to happen, right, Yeah, and here's what happened, the
Hurts deal.

Speaker 11 (01:44:36):
I hate to criticize Jalen Hurts and his agent, but
it didn't help because he's now in a contract for
six years, not five. It's one plus five he had
when you're left plus of five new years. And look,
the guaranteed signing isn't great, but the structure, the agent
did a good job with the structure. So yeah, he
didn't get a ton at signing, but he's going to
get a lot rolling in over the next couple of years.
There's no way they're cutting him. So there are different

(01:44:58):
ways to get a deal done. What happens is here,
and I give Eric to Costa credit. They really wanted
him in. Jeff, you know this as a player, when
you're putting, when you're installing a brand new offense. Todd
Makin's offense is completely different from the one that Greg
Roban runs.

Speaker 4 (01:45:14):
You really need him in here, you do. He needs
he needs to learn this.

Speaker 11 (01:45:17):
I think that's the part that someone told me that
this is someone who works in the NFL said to me,
He goes, why doesn't the media understand this like this
is you don't want to report the cis for coaches.

Speaker 4 (01:45:25):
I said, all right, I'm going to use that. That's
a good a good point.

Speaker 1 (01:45:27):
I agree, all right, and we'll call you in three
years to evaluate the twenty twenty three drafts. Two years,
all right, two years. He's going to give us a
grade on the draft. Adam is always you're the best
of the best. We'll talk to you next week. Thanks

what it's trending right now. Nick Cope is back with us.
What's going on?

Speaker 2 (01:46:06):
Huh? What is your NFL team?

Speaker 9 (01:46:08):
Nick?

Speaker 7 (01:46:09):
I grew up a forty nine Ers fan that was
passed down to me. My grandfather had season tickets going
back to Keyzar Stadium in the city and then Candlestick Park.

Speaker 1 (01:46:19):
So do you think that Brock Party eventually will have
a bust in Canton. Oh.

Speaker 7 (01:46:24):
I don't know about a bust, but I think he
showed he's pretty good. I mean, it's gonna be really
hard to recreate what he did end of last season,
but I mean to do that to just kind of
come in and pick up and lead that team.

Speaker 1 (01:46:36):
And I'm still bummed about that NFC title game. It's
such a bummer.

Speaker 2 (01:46:40):
Yeah. Oh, they wouldn't have beaten the Eagles.

Speaker 1 (01:46:44):
Yeah, No, the Eagles are really good. I'm not got
to sit here and say they would have won the game.

Speaker 4 (01:46:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:46:49):
And the Eagles, boy, they're reloading.

Speaker 7 (01:46:51):
The Eagles are is to Georgia as the Chargers is
to TCU. Apparently, that's what I've learned this weekend. Max
Duggan finally rafted by the Chargers. Here in the seventh round.
We've got about twelve picks left before the end of
the draft. Other notable names going in the seventh round.
The Ravens drafted USC offensive lineman Andrew Voorhe's he would

(01:47:12):
have gone much earlier in the draft, but remember he
tore his ACL at the combine. He still won the
bench press a day later after tearing his acl He
will miss the start of the season, but could ultimately
be a good get for the Ravens. Three punters have
now been drafted as well. Rams took Ethan Evans out
of Division two Wingate University, which Jeff, I believe is

(01:47:32):
in your neck of the woods.

Speaker 3 (01:47:33):
Yes, in South Carolina. Yeah, North Carolina, one of the two.

Speaker 7 (01:47:37):
Yeah, I think it's it's like South I look, yeah,
it's just outside Charlotte there.

Speaker 2 (01:47:41):
So we've had.

Speaker 3 (01:47:42):
Some runners wish.

Speaker 7 (01:47:45):
Today though, really about the quarterbacks guys, we had nine
of them taken today, including dug In here in the
seventh he had five and a fourteen picks span. At
the end of the fourth and beginning of the fifth rounds.
He had twelve overall taken through the first five rounds.
That set up record. We've also had a record in
the number of trades. Last count I saw in the
last hour was forty one of them, but that number

(01:48:07):
could be higher. Still having a tough time finding a
final number on that. We still got another ten or
so picks to go. But Georgia quarterback Stets and Bennet
going to the Rams. Fresno State quarterback Jake Hanner to
the Saints New Orleans moved up to get him. UCLA
quarterback Dorian Thompson Robinson to the Browns, penn State quarterback
Sean Clifford going to the Packers, Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee

(01:48:29):
headed to the Eagles. Some notable names there had a
big trade go down earlier, the lion sending running back
DeAndre Swift to the Eagles and in return, Detroit receives
a fourth round pick in twenty twenty five, and the
NBA Sixers coach Doc River said Joel and beat his
downfall for Monday's game one of the Eastern Conference Semis
against the Celtics. He's got that knee injury. Western Conference

(01:48:51):
Semifinals getting underway tonight. Game one between the Nuggets and
the Suns is at eight thirty Eastern time. And baseball,
the Yankee Saint Aaron Judge has a mild hip strain
and they'll continue to evaluate him throughout this weekend before
they determine if he needs to go on the injured list.
He hasn't played since he left Thursday's game against the Rangers.
By the way, the Rangers, they places Jacob de Grom

(01:49:12):
on the fifteen day injured list with right elbow inflammation.
In games going on right now, run through these quickly.
Marlins over the Cubs seven to four, and the seventh
A's lead the Reds two to one. In the eighth,
Red Sox on top of the Guardian six to five.
In the eighth, Phillies lead the Astros two to nothing.
In the fifth game two of a double header, Orioles
lead the Tigers four nothing. Detroit won the first game.

(01:49:33):
You got the Pirates on top of the Nationals two nothing.
Pittsburgh won the first game. That's a double header going
on as well as Washington d C. Pittsburgh has won
nine of ten. And then you got the Mexico City
Series Padres and Giants San Diego with a two to
nothing lead in the second. Steve Hartman, Jeff Schwartz back
to you guys, H right, Nick, thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (01:49:50):
Once again, we are coming you alive from the ti
iraq dot com studios. So we're kind of get these
final picks in. I don't know what's taken so long
down the stretch here. Just get the names out there.
Eventually we're going to get to mister Irrelevant, the reigning
one Brock Party certainly made news in the NFL last
year from your own draft experience, and you've had to

(01:50:10):
wait a long time for your name to be called. Uh,
and still you went on to a very successful career
in the National Football League. What's the process now for
these guys? Take us through this whole thing. The draft
is done, your name's been called by a team. What's next?

Speaker 3 (01:50:27):
Yeah, so I think it's a little bit different now,
but I can kind of give you the I think,
what the kind of gist of it. You know. So,
if you're a first round pick, you were immediately flown
to the new city, and there's typically a press conference
and you've by now if your your favorite team has
posted the videos right right of your team. There even
sometimes second or third round pack, especially their local I

(01:50:48):
saw the Chargers they drafted some local players, you know,
a couple of USC kids, UCLA kid, they were they
took photos at the facility. But most often you're gonna
fly in a timely manner to the facility at some
point when you start the Officerason program, and it's like
any new job, you're gonna show up, You're gonna fill
the paperwork out, you're gonna meet all your new employees,

(01:51:11):
obviously your teammates. You're gonna get a tour of the
facility and you're gonna just jump in and start working
out and start going to team meetings. You know when
when when I was drafted, we had mini camp right away.
So I flew out that week I believe or the
week after right to Charlotte and had mini camp right away.
Uh that's the way we John Fox did things. This

(01:51:32):
is when we had too mini camps and uh, you
could have two and it would have would never work
you any camp. We had a veteran mini camps. I
showed right up first day with uh, with the veterans.
But yeah, it's an odd feeling because you're you're drafted
and then you just kind of look at home like
you're not signing a contract right away. Those get done

(01:51:53):
the next couple of days, next couple of weeks. They're
all slotted now, so there's no we're negotiation. You're just
getting what a little bit more than the the guy
got last year in your same slot. Signed the contract
and move it along. But it's pretty fun.

Speaker 4 (01:52:04):
It's exciting.

Speaker 3 (01:52:05):
Man, like this happens once in your life if you're
a player, right now, and so I hope all these
players are soaking it in. No matter where, you get
drafted very quickly. So my draft year was two thousand
and eight, Steve, and I believe it's still the record.
Ten offensive tackles were taken in the first two rounds
of that year. Okay, and this was when the draft

(01:52:26):
was two days. It was rounds one and two on
the first day on Saturday, and then rounds three through
seven on Sunday. And they always tell you, especially in
my position as a lower round draft pick, do not
watch the draft. Okay, it's don't do it. So I
didn't watch.

Speaker 4 (01:52:41):
The first day.

Speaker 3 (01:52:41):
I went to a friend's baseball game. Actually he was
at West La Junior College. I went and watched him
play baseball. The next day, though, Sunday morning, I'm like, well,
I sort of knew I was in the next wave
of the tackles in my mind, and my agent's were
on so like, you're gonna go fourth to sixth round,
that's about where you're gonna go. Cool, but all these
guys are taken. So I thought, man, I'm next, I'm
third fourth round. I am next, And so I got

(01:53:03):
up six am on the on the West Coast. I
went into my We had two TVs at my parents' house.
We had one in the family, one of my dad's
office to kind of the guest room one of my
dad's office by myself. Started watching a draft. Third round,
my name is not called, fourth round. My phone's not
even ringing, Like no one's even call you, and teams
will call you to like and this started happened to

(01:53:25):
me in the fifth round, like I had, the Panthers
called me. He ended up drafting me the seventh round. Hey,
it was an old line coach. Hey, it's you know,
coach Magazue. Here, just wantle, you know, like we're we're
thinking about drafting you right here. Just want to I
really like you a lot. That's to kind of get
you to think they like you enough to when you're
an undrafted free agent to remember, Hey, I called you,
Remember I called you in the fifth round? I want you?

(01:53:45):
And so fifth round, sixth round, finally the seventh round
comes right and by this time, man, I've been pacing outside.
I've turned the draft off. I put my phone away,
like I've done I played basketball. It's out of my dad.
I'm just like over the whole day I should never
watch raft. I did it anyways, my mistake, and the
Panthers called me. We'd actually canceled my draft, my draft

(01:54:08):
like party at the local Mexican restaurant up the street,
like we were like over over the whole day, And
the Panthers called me. As actually was Brandon Bean, who
is now the general manager of the Bills. He was
the guy who he was the kind of lower level
with the Panthers. He was a guy that called the
seventh round draft picks essentially at that point. And he
called me and he said, are you excited to be drafted?

(01:54:30):
There was something along those lines, and I said, true.
I said, at this point, I don't even care, because
I had also been talking to my agent about undrafted
fragent homes and so I've been, you kind of like
talking back and forth with him about where I might go,
and like I was just over the day. And then
of course he said, you've been drafted. I was super excited,
but that's just not a typical draft day. But in

(01:54:52):
the end I got drafted. It was super awesome. It
was super cool, but it could be a long day
if you are stupid about it and sent in front
of the television.

Speaker 2 (01:55:00):
I am. I'm adding up.

Speaker 1 (01:55:02):
You were the twenty sixth offensive tackle taken in that draft.

Speaker 2 (01:55:06):
Yeah, and by the way, you.

Speaker 1 (01:55:07):
Had a vastly superior career to most of the guys
I know. I mean there was, like you said, there
was a run on there was Wow, one, two, three,
four or five solids in the Yeah. Crazy and what of.

Speaker 2 (01:55:21):
These guys were Wow? I mean this Yeah, this was
pretty ugly out there.

Speaker 1 (01:55:27):
Yeah, I mean it's it's going to be in an
exciting time for these guys coming up. On the other side,
we're going to get our final thoughts on this NFL
draft and also some changes in the college game, which
is near and dear to Jeff and I that probably
need to be watched in twenty twenty three. This is
Fox Sports Saturday.

Speaker 3 (01:55:46):
Kelly gives it away, Stefan, Silent, Stanley Stars starstany.

Speaker 1 (01:55:56):
Time. Can I kiss your right leg, Elias Srken.

Speaker 12 (01:56:06):
Because that goes off it looks like his right leg
from the sharpest of angles and the Venturan quaffs Dashiny
has ended this series one a chop Carolina did to
keeping this fuck in.

Speaker 1 (01:56:41):
Big time there.

Speaker 3 (01:56:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:56:43):
Yeah. By the way, we want to thank the crew today.
Sam was here. This is like first time in our
new studios here for me. We actually opened these up
on Tuesday. Alex coming in on the weekend. Alex, it
is good to see you. Well, you know, Steve, when
there's something new opening, you need the best tech guy here.

Speaker 4 (01:56:59):
We got to make sure everything well.

Speaker 2 (01:57:00):
So Alex and I have a long history together as well.

Speaker 1 (01:57:03):
And yeah, I mean I like it. I mean I
can see you well, Brandon, our brilliant producer, I can
see him.

Speaker 2 (01:57:08):
I saw Nick, you know, doing updates.

Speaker 1 (01:57:11):
That is a whole different world to see our update guys.
So it all worked out really really well. Once again,
we're coming alive from the ti iraq dot com studios.
We are down to the final two three picks of
this draft.

Speaker 2 (01:57:25):
We got Denver, we got the Bears.

Speaker 1 (01:57:26):
And we got the Rams last few picks, so we're
down to these final picks out there.

Speaker 3 (01:57:33):
Do they still do the Disneyland parade for thevant the Prede?
That's your hometown, you know right?

Speaker 1 (01:57:43):
I mean again, Brock pretty success a year ago, just
broke the mold on this whole thing as far as
being completely irrelevant because obviously he turned out to be
anything but you and really helping to save the forty
nine ers season last year, all the quarterbacks doing down
you know, I just you know, I wanted to mention
a little college football because you and I, of course

(01:58:04):
for many years doing shows together here on Saturdays, covering
a lot of college football. What did you think of
their decision to undo the rule that I did not
know this was actually introduced in nineteen sixty eight, which
was stopping the clock on a first down that has
been taken away. I mean, you're obviously gonna have fewer
plays during the course of a game, But what do

(01:58:25):
you make of that?

Speaker 3 (01:58:27):
Who asked for this or who wanted this? Right?

Speaker 2 (01:58:29):
Yeah? Why was after all these years? Why how does
something like this happen?

Speaker 3 (01:58:35):
I don't know they're going to do dis skies of
player safety, but it's going to to significantly alter the
way games are played. You're just not going to have
as many upsets. Sorry, Like that's just not You're not
coming as many upsets, and you're not going to have

(01:58:56):
as many comebacks.

Speaker 1 (01:58:58):
You'll still be able to start the clock I think
in the last two minutes of that happen at the
end of the game.

Speaker 3 (01:59:02):
But when you're down. Look when when you're down twenty
one points entering the fourth quarter in college football, exactly,
you still feel you have a chance to win that game.
In the NFL, you don't. Like you don't because you
don't have time. The time goes so fast, and it's
going to change the way the game is played. There's
also little things that will change. It will change the

(01:59:23):
way two minute drives run. Right now in college football
because the ball because the clock does stop on first
downs outside of any time when you're doing the quote
quote two minute drill with five minutes left, you can
throw a ball over the middle of the field for
a first down. The clock stops. Now, now you throw
the ball the sidelines, right because if not, okay, how
about spikes? Now you have to spike the ball and

(01:59:45):
waste to play. Then you previously used to have to
get the ball down the field. Those little things here
and there that will change the way the game is played.
That'll make it a I think easier for the better
teams to win, the ones that are more efficient at
moving the ball and will have less comebacks because once
the team gets down big, not no time to come back.

Speaker 1 (02:00:02):
All right, you're in Carolina and we get your thoughts
again on Bryce Young, number one overall pick.

Speaker 2 (02:00:06):
What do you expect?

Speaker 1 (02:00:07):
How much time does he need to turn this Panthers
team around.

Speaker 3 (02:00:11):
He'll start Week one and I think he'll be a
good pro. I don't think he'll be great, but he'll
be a good pro above average.

Speaker 1 (02:00:18):
All right, Jeff, great to catch up with you again. Everybody,
