On today’s episode, Jason discusses why he believes the San Francisco 49ers’ Super Bowl window slammed shut following their ugly Thursday Night Football loss to Los Angeles Rams (featuring a shaky night from Deebo Samuel and an early exit by De’Vondre Campbell), why this lost season proved that the 49ers cannot pay Brock Purdy top-of-the-market money and wonders aloud just how deep this now-healthy Rams team can go in the NFC Playoffs. Finally, J-Mac closes the show with his Best Bets for the upcoming college football and NFL Week 15 slate.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
This is straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What is up, straight fire, fam, It's me Jason McIntyre.
Straight fire for Friday, December thirteenth. Remember Friday the thirteenth
with a thing back in the day when you were
a young kid. Oh my gosh, the scariest movie Friday
the thirteenth. It's a scary Friday the thirteenth for the
San Francisco forty nine ers. Pour some out for San

(00:31):
Francisco forty nine ers fans. It's been a tough week
for good teams that have had good runs in recent years.
Monday Night Football was the Cowboys. I urged you to
hug a Dallas Cowboys fan after that brutal loss to
the Bengals. Cowboys officially eliminated from playoff contention. Tough way
to go out, tough season after what three straight years
of eleven plus wins for the Cowboys, and now we

(00:53):
see the same. Yes, it's true from the San Francisco
forty nine ers. It's done for the last five years.
They to the NFC Championship Game, two Super Bowl trips,
and it appears over the season's done. They lose to
the Rams at home twelve to six, yes, you heard
that right, twelve to six and what was an unwatchable

(01:18):
game played in the rain. Brock Purdy was not good.
Deebo Samuel demanded the ball, then dropped a pivotal third
down pass. The forty nine Ers were held under two
hundred yards of total offense. The forty nine Ers did
not make it into the red zone once. I mean,
this was a brutal game, brutal way to go out
for the Niners. And the questions will begin for San

(01:41):
Francisco as soon as today. I would assume that San
Francisco radio is going to kind of sort of be
on fire. And again, you don't want to overreact, it's
tough not to, but the Deebo Samuel stuff, it feels
like he probably is done in San Francisco after this season.
I mean, come planes all week. Right in his bread

(02:02):
Basket tie game, third quarter, he's got a first down
and much more into the red zone and he just
he just drops it stonehands. That's out of character for Debo,
one of my favorite players in the league last few years.
And he looks like he's carrying some added weight, maybe
spent some time at the table at Thanksgiving. He's just
not the player he was. If it couldn't get bad

(02:24):
enough for San Francisco, how's this In the third quarter,
Kyle Shanahan tried to put Devondre Campbell, the linebacker, back
in the game, and Devandre Campbell told Kyle Shanahan he
didn't want to play and he left the game in
the third quarter. Like the ship be sinking in San Francisco.
It's that bad. You got players not wanting to go

(02:46):
back in. Everybody's hurt. I guess that win over the
Bears was fools gold I'm the idiot. Well, I'm assuming
many other people. Is this what line went up to three?
It it felt like the Niners had a shot and
they they no showed. This was bad now Thursday at
Football late in the season, Ken get ugly. Last week
we had Packers Lions indoors. It was glorious, spectacular game

(03:09):
this week outdoors, rain players quitting in the third quarter.
George Kittle half of the props got home. He had
over fifty eight and a half receiving yards. Lennard On
sixty one but did not topple four and a half catches,
stuck on four, had seven targets. It was just it
was just not a good Chris performance from the Niners

(03:31):
and they got swept by the Rams. Rams are not
done yet. They let's see here, they are a half
game back of Seattle in the NFC West. The Seahawks
will travel, yes travel to the Rams in the final
week of the season in a game that will have

(03:52):
enormous playoff ramifications. Before then, the Rams get to h
they get to beat the Jets in New York, and
then they will host Arizona Arizona's reeling. Meanwhile, Seattle their
schedule not exactly a cake walk. They face the Green
Bay Packers this week in a game I will be

(04:14):
talking about shortly in best bets. They host the Packers
Sunday Night football in a big game. If the Seahawks
lip up and they are underdogs at home, here come
the Rams and they're gonna be a problem for somebody.
And then Seattle has the Vikings and then the Bears
much tougher schedule, And you gotta wonder, is it is

(04:39):
the Rams offense starting to click at the right time Again.
We saw this last year. Stafford got hot in December,
propelled the Rams into the playoffs. They pushed the Lions really,
really hard. Can they do it again? Now? As things
would Obviously, you have to win the division. If you're
the Rams, you want to host a game at so FI.

(05:00):
And it looks like Tampa Bay's really beat up. We'll
get to them shortly. In the best bets, I'm gonna
go ahead and pencil in Tampa for four. And the
winner of the NFC West is three three. Yeah, three
would host six in the first round, and that as

(05:22):
of now, looks to be the Green Bay Packers. It
could end up being the Vikings, but as of now
it looks like the Packers. Folks could could also be Washington.
Washington Rams would be interesting in so far Packers Rams
would be very good at so FI. All of a sudden,
this Rams team, man, this is the second straight season
they've appeared to be cooked. Done zo, finito, it was

(05:46):
over and here they come behind Stafford McVeigh, the indomitable
Puka Nakua. Cooper Cup, by the way, did nothing last night.
I mean, like you win with nothing from Cooper Cup.

Speaker 1 (05:59):
Seriously.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
I mean it was a battle of field goals, I
get that, and Cooper Cup did a hell of a
job blocking. But I'm looking at the stats here Cooper
Cup check it in with three targets, zero receptions. Oh my,
that's a stunner. Listen, that game was so bad. I
didn't even check fantasy. My son and I are in
the playoffs in three of four leagues. My son was

(06:25):
facing Kien Williams. You don't care about fantasy, but you
know I do. Ooh, I was facing Juwan Jennings. He
did nothing for my opponent. Let's see what the other
one was. Oh, any Fox fantasy?

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Oh? I had nobody.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
So anyways, ugly game rams come out on top niner
season over, and yet you really got Obviously, I don't
think Shanahan's in trouble, but I'm we don't have all
the data as the game and in a little while
ago recordings after midnight Friday the thirteenth, and I just
look at this team and I'm like, man Greenlaw came

(07:02):
back from the Achilles, didn't look like himself. Trent Williams
is old. Boats have missed a just missed a bunch
of games. And you just look around this team and
you're like, man, McCaffrey, they're getting old. Now, Shanahan can
scheme up some stuff, but how do you retool this
team on the fly. How do you keep them relevant

(07:24):
when everybody's so old and banged up? Can you do it?
And I asked this question because you have to pay
Brock Purdy and it's like, okay, well listen, we know
what Perdy's gonna give you. He wasn't great last night. Again,
it was in the rain, Deebo had a bad drop,
the interception late in the game. Whatever, it just didn't.

(07:45):
Brock has not been awesome this season. Obviously he was
great the two years prior. I don't know what you do.
I would expect Rock Perdy to get a contract in
the Baker Mayfield stratosphere thirty to four forty mil. I
don't think this idea of paying him fifty or sixty
makes any sense at all. My guess is Brock is

(08:09):
not going to be demanding because if the forty nine
ers say, listen, man, we'll just go give Sam Donald
thirty or forty million, you know where's brock perty gonna go.
You're only as good as your market, you know, you know,
this is not that different from the housing market. It's

(08:30):
like you've been trying to buy a house for two years.
Something great comes on the market, but they're asking too much.
You can either try a low ball and get rejected
and you're back to the drawing board. You just accept it,
all right. The housing market out here in La sucks,
but I'm sure that's happening around the country. It's not
just Los Angeles. And here's the reality. You gotta have
to pay up. But that's if they're inventory is low

(08:53):
and there's no other options. Forty nine ers are gonna
have some options, whether it's somebody they like in the
draft member there's the forty nine ers who traded up
for Trey Lance. Okay, didn't work out, but they saw
something in him they liked. Maybe they see that in
Jayla Milroe. I don't know. I mean, there's gonna be
options for San friand I just don't know if anybody's
gonna pony up big, big money for Brock Perdy and

(09:15):
I like the guy. I just look at the market
and I think the forty nine ers will probably do that,
and then you get in this weird spot. I don't
think they're gonna play some kind of back and forth
and it's gonna get ugly. I just think the reality is, hey, Brock,
we get it. You were undervalued because you were a
seventh round pick making eight hundred thousand dollars to be

(09:35):
one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL for two
years statistically, and now you want to get paid and
that's great, but it doesn't totally work for us given
what the supporting cast is. So here we go thirty
five million year, thirty thirty five to forty in that ballpark,
in that vicinity, you go give them too money and

(09:57):
go look at the Dolphins like, okay, that's just how
oh it is. You overpay the quarterback. The rest of
the roster screws. So I don't like their I listen,
I like party, I've gassed him up. Listen, I'm not
one of these fake the funk guys. You know, there's
a bunch of frauds out there who just tell you
what you want to hear. The numbers for two years,
said Brock. Purdy was tremendous one of the best quarterbacks

(10:18):
in the NFL this year. He's not one of the
best quarterbacks in the NFL period, and the story and
now you can make excuses for why he was and
is currently not. I'm not going to go down that road.
Maybe on a podcast next week we'll get a forty
nine Ers guy on. But I don't think he's like
a bum. He just hasn't been great this year. And
you look around him and you start to see all

(10:39):
the injuries. You play with a bunch of backups. You know,
good luck to any quarterback, yeah, Patrick Mahomes and Josh
Allen included, when you're losing everything. So tough one for
the Niners. Bitter pill to swallow. Onward to two thousand
and twenty five.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
All right, it's time for the best bets.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
Now.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
What stinks is college football is largely over. We got
bowl games that don't matter, exhibitions, and then the playoff,
and we've been you know, we've been hammering college football season.
I have one bowl game this weekend in college that
I bet. I don't recommend it. I know nothing about
the teams. I mean, major Applewhites, coaching South Alabama, and
I was a major apple White fan when he was

(11:42):
at Texas. The bad news is he's lost four players
to the transfer portal, including his arguably the best player
right this running back named Fluff Bothwell, you start reading around,
you're like, four guys hit the portals. So the line
craters and now it's bumping back. I got South Alabama
minus eight. I'm currently seeing minus nine. I think the

(12:04):
guess is, listen, Major apple White really knows football. He's
a very sharp coach on the rise, and it doesn't
really matter that he lost his kicker and his running
back and blah blah blah, because guess what, it's next,
man up and it's a bowl game and they're gonna
scheme it up. So I'm on South Alabama minus eight.
Not significant because again I'm not gonna watch this game.
I did hit a teaser in the playoff opening rounds. Now,

(12:30):
you guys are obviously familiar with teasers. I've had. Actually,
when I don't like the card, I go to teasers
because there were some really positive plays. Everybody knows at
this point what a long teaser is. You want to
go through key numbers of seven and three, in the teaser.
So if you know, for instance, Ohio State is seven
and a half against Tennessee, well let me just double

(12:53):
check to make sure it is seven and a half.
But seven and a half is perfect. You got a
six point teaser, you tease it down to one and
a half, or you do the seven point teaser and
pay a little extra juice. But as of currently, so
Ohio State's at seven and a half. This is why
I like this first round teaser. You've got Notre Dame
at seven and a half over Indiana, and you've got

(13:14):
Penn State at eight and a half against SMU. I
like all those favorites. I don't know and nobody does.
Because the playoffs never happened before. We've never had a
twelve team playoff. We don't know what this is going
to be like where teams are hosting first round games.
Penn State is at home in Happy Valley. Now, adding
another layer to this, I don't know how many college

(13:37):
campuses are letting out for winter break. How many kids
will be on campus. You have to look into the
schedule and figure out. Okay, well, even if the classes
do end on the Thursday before the game, how many
stick around to go to the game. Is it going
to be a vibrant atmosphere? Is it gonna be a
ghost town? Obviously, Ohio State's gonna sell out a playoff
game as with Penn State. But my live here is

(14:01):
if I can take Notre Dame down to one and
a half, they basically win by two, Penn State down
to two, win my field goal, and Ohio State down
to one and a half. Who screws that up? Like?
Where is the big catastrophe? A lot of people want
to sell Ohio State and say, oh Tennessee's the side. Tennessee.
Let's not overreact to losing a humongous rivalry game at

(14:23):
Ohio State. I believe since it happened Thanksgiving, what are
they looking at three weeks off before this game happens
to stew over that loss? Come on, I think Ohio
State's gonna be fine. I think they win. I like
all the favorites. I think Texas handles Clemson, Penn State.
I feel confident. The only one that could get tricky
is Notre Dame. But we'll get into that a little

(14:45):
more next week. Why it could be tricky, But that's
my favorite teaser for the opening ground I know not
everybody likes teasers. Listen to each his own, but that's
what I've done so far. Over to the NFL card, Listen,
it was not a great week last week. I had
an amazing week in college basketb ball, A lot going on.
Drop the ball in the NFL. It just wasn't a
great week. It happens. First bet I made was Washington

(15:09):
minus seven. It's now seven and a half. This is
a Saints team. Their their season's over. We're looking at
a Derek Carr out for the season. Even if he's
not out for they haven't put him on IR yet
that I've seen. It appears as if they're not gonna
play him simply because of the injury guarantee and the

(15:29):
potential for them cutting him either way. We're looking at
Jake Hayn or Spencer Rattler against Dan Quinn's defense. We've
seen Spencer Ratler, We've seen Hayner. Listen. I love Jake
the Snake a college. He won me a lot of
money in those Pac twelve after Dark games where Fresno
State would face like U C. L A and shock
the world. I just I can't see this happening. I

(15:53):
think Dan Quinn's ready for this. The Washington offense had
a week to rest. Jade and Daniels should come out
one hundred percent fresh, no more rib issues. Eckler is
going to be out, but Robinson should be fine. Scary
Terry McLaurin, and oh, by the way, Marshawn Lattimore practicing.
He will play in a revenge spot against the Saints.
I expect a vibrant Washington effort here. And the last

(16:17):
time I faded the Saints in their backup quarterback, Tampa
beat them like fifty two twenty eight. I'm on Washington
here minus seven. I early in the week I got Baltimore.
You're not supposed to do this. I bet Baltimore minus fourteen.
When it was supposed to be Drew Locke, it is
now going to be mister DeVito. It's up to sixteen
and a half. I do not recommend laying big numbers
like that in the NFL. Does Baltimore shut if they're

(16:40):
up twenty eight nothing at halftime? Do they just shut
it down in the second half and rest up? Because, oh,
by the way, the Baltimore Ravens have a bunch of
tough games left on their schedule, namely next week in
a rematch against Pittsburgh. Now, the Hardballs group did have
the week off, so you're able to focus on the Giants,
but you know they have one eye on that Pittsburgh

(17:01):
game the following week, and it is on a Saturday,
so it's on a short week. I'm sure Harball would
love to run this score up early and have all
his meaningful guys sit in the fourth quarter that is
totally in play. But with a spread of fourteen, fifteen
or sixteen that opens up. Hey, it's twenty eight nothing
in half. Lamar doesn't throw a pass in the second half,

(17:23):
and next thing you know, you get a couple of
garbage time touchdowns and it ends twenty eight fourteen or
twenty eight sixteen, and you don't get the cover. So
I'm not recommending you guys do this, but I bet
it Baltimore minus fourteen earlier in the week. I did
take Eagles minus four early in the week. Little buyer's remorse.
The more I looked into this game, you know, Jalen hurts,
it's funny. In that Niners game last night, Deebo Samuel

(17:46):
complained and on the first play of the game, very
first play. Who did Brock Purty go to Deebo Samuel
very first play of the game. We're gonna make an
effort to get in the ball now. Debo did not
end up having a good game, had a huge drop
as we talked about, but they made an effort get
him involved early. You know, Squeaky Wheel gets the grease.
I believe a J. Brown will be force fed here.

(18:08):
Would not be shocked at all if they really went
after Porter a lot, the young kid out of Penn State,
and I think they'll be throwing. My issue that I
keep stumbling into is do they trust Jalen Hurts. The
team really gelled after the bye when they pivoted away
from Hurts throwing a lot and they went back to
run heavy. But to get a J. Brown the bull,

(18:28):
you've got to have Hurts throw it. Do they trust him?
I don't know the answer to that. And here's the
other problem. Hurts, who likes to tuck and run. Bro
you ain't going nowhere against Pittsburghy're used to seeing Lamar Jackson.
They will be ready. There's nowhere to run, So you're
gonna have to deliver the passes on time and against
against pressure. So I do have some concerns here for

(18:50):
the Eagles, but ultimately, I just I still think Pittsburgh's
a little bit overrated. I've come around. They're good. I
just don't think they're in the Eagles class. So I'm
on the Eagles minus four.

Speaker 2 (19:12):
I'm on Houston minus two and a half. That line
doesn't look like it's going my way. I like Houston
and this one Miami kind of season on the line.
By the way, this whole season on the line stuff.
It's a good talking point and it sounds good, But
what does it mean. The forty nine Ers season was
on the line last night, had that turn out, they

(19:32):
didn't show up. I mean the Cincinnati Bengals season has
been on the line. Geez, remember that Pittsburgh game. Oh,
you gotta have it coming off the buy, I gotta
have it. They give up forty four points, Like, come on,
what are we doing here?

Speaker 1 (19:43):
You know?

Speaker 2 (19:43):
And I just this whole Miami Dolphins team, you know,
I'm just I'm not a buyer. I'm out on the Dolphins.
I'm not seeing it. I think Houston here coming off
the buye rejuvenated. We're talking about a Houston team. I
mean Miami's coming off the big overtime against the Jets where, oh,
by the way, Aaron Rodgers carved him up with his
best game of the season. Are we going to see

(20:05):
Houston come out and CJ. Stroud start to look like
the guy from last year now that they's finally had a break.
This is a late bye, by the way that the
Texans had, and they kind of looked like a tired team.
They were reeling a bit against that first play schedule.
They had lost one, two, three, They had lost four
or five before beating Jacksonville heading into the by and
they let Jacksonville big and let them back in the game.

(20:27):
They did not look particularly sharp against Tennessee pulled away
from Dallas, but when they step up in class, they
fight hard. Played. The Lions had that game totally dominated
first half, ended up losing by three. Played the Packers
in Green Bay fought hard, lose by two, faced Buffalo

(20:47):
tough game, wining a close one by three. Where do
you put Miami? Are they one of these dregs where
they going to take the foot off the gas. I
don't think so. I think this is a step up
game from Houston. I think the pressure gets to Tua.
I know I RiPP Stingley a lot, but I do
actually think their man to man is gonna probably work
here against Hill and Waddle. It's a little risky, not

(21:09):
gonna lie, a little risky to play man to man
against these guys. But give me the Houston Texans minus
two and a half. I'm on Buffalo plus two and
Buffalo money line. Sorry, it doesn't mean I don't like
the Lions.

Speaker 1 (21:24):
It doesn't.

Speaker 2 (21:25):
I just just Josh Allen and a dome. I mean,
he is unbelievable in a dome. Nine two in ones
against the spread indoors and oh by the way, Dalton
Kim Kaid is back. Oh by the way, Keon Coleman
appears to be back, and you start and again. This
is not a knock on Detroit. I know I got
some of my buddies who listen and their Lions fans
get so ticked when I pick against him. It's nothing

(21:47):
against you. These are the quarterbacks they've faced this year
in order. Matt Stafford very very good, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray,
Gino Smith, Dak Prescott, Sam Darnold. I think it was
Will Lovis. It might have been his backup, Jordan Love
coming off the injury, c J. Stroud, Trevor Lawrence, or

(22:09):
Mac Jones. I think it was Mac Jones, Anthony Richardson,
Caleb Williams, Jordan Love. Somehow, somehow they did not face
Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen. Now, Stafford is
a really good quarterback. Stafford kept them in it. This
will be the toughest test for the Lions, and they play,
according to some stats here, the highest rate of man

(22:32):
to man defense in the league. You know what happens
when you play man to man. The quarterbacks have their
back to the quarterback, and Josh Allen, a running quarterback,
all of a sudden becomes very, very problematic. And I
do have some concerns with this Lions defense. Are they
going to be able to contain Josh Allen? You know,

(22:53):
Kyler Murray ran pretty well for Arizona. They were able
to hang in that game. They didn't ultimately get the win,
but Kyler led I've been rushing five for forty five.
And you know, historically running quarterbacks have been able to
do some things against the Lions defense. And now Aaron
Glenn's a really good defensive coach. I like him. But

(23:15):
Sam Darnold four carries thirty nine yards earlier this season.
My brother has Josh Allen in fantasy, so he's obviously
very excited for the playoffs. I think he's a big
game for Allan. And we've seen this. If you start
to look at Josh Allen the game log, they're getting smart.
They're saying, hey, Josh, early in the season, we don't
want you running. We don't. There's no point you run

(23:37):
early in the season, you get hurt, We're screwed. Look
at Josh Allen. It's basically, Josh Allen's running ability is
break in case of emergency. So they were losing against
Arizona and the opener and he had to run nine
times for thirty nine yards. But in the other in
the games after that, two carries against Miami in a blowout,
six against Jacksonville, in a blowout five against Baltimore, in

(23:59):
a blowout law four against Houston, and a loss three
against Tennessee. He's not running much Bob. But look what
happens when you step up in big games late in
the season. Twelve carries fifty five yards and a touchdown
against the Chiefs. Ten carries eighty two yards three touchdowns

(24:20):
against the Rams late in the season, double digit carry games.
They will put the ball on Josh Allen's arm and legs.
He will carry them. And I got the Bills plus
two and money line. I I can't believe I bet
Green Bay minus two and a half. That was dumb.
I like the Seahawks. I'll be buying out of this
and I'll probably take the Seahawks in the contest. I

(24:41):
like the Vikings small bet over the Bears minus seven.
Did the Bears quit? I don't know. How are we
supposed to tell these things? I don't know the answer
to that. I mean, you're buying the Vikings at the
top of the market where Darnold has the best game
probably of his career, all right, and you're fading the
Bears who were humiliated in San Francisco. Not a smart bet,

(25:03):
it's not, but I made it anyway. Totals Cincinnati Tennessee
under forty seven. Not a weather thing. It just Tennessee's
defense should be able to bottle up the run game,
and then as Joe Burrow chucking duck and frankly, I
think Joe Burrow could do okay. I don't know that
Will Levis will do okay even against this wretched Cincinnati defense.

(25:26):
Tampa LA Chargers over forty four and a half at
Tampa Bay defense is looking beaten up. Now that bet
could be a problem if the injuries for the Chargers
continue and don't get better heading into the weekend. And
then Indie Denver over forty five and a half. I
will just say this is a good, good, good teaser weekend.

(25:46):
My favorite teaser legs are Washington from seven and a
half to one and a half, or pick them. I
like Pittsburgh because they play all close games. I like
teasing them up. Not through the key number of three,
but it's through seven to double digits. I got Pittsburgh
up to eleven in a teaser they did just play.

(26:08):
All games are close. You know Pittsburgh's gonna fight hard.
I don't think they get rolled over by the Eagles here.
I think it's competitive. I think the Eagles win, But
you give me eleven and a teaser, I'll take it.
And the other ones I like are teasing Buffalo up
from two to eight and a half or nine. I
think even if Buffalo loses, you know, they're gonna keep
gunning until the end, and I you know, I think

(26:30):
that'll be a one score game. And the other one
I like is teasing Seattle up at home into the
nine eight and a half nine category. Again, I don't
know that green Bay is capable of running away and hiding.
I was reading some stats that green Bay is similar
to Pittsburgh and they live and die by the big play,
and they haven't gotten the big play lately. They didn't

(26:51):
get it against Detroit and they were still alive. But
Seattle refuses to give up the big play and their
