(01:28):
the Coverage. We are here and we are rolling into
the Divisional Round playoff games too tomorrow in the NFL
too on Sunday, the final weekend of the NFL season,
where there will be four different football games, the final
weekend of football in general, unless you want to count
(01:48):
the XFL, where there will be four different games to watch.
I think the wild Card and the Divisional Round are
the two best weekends of the NFL season because there's
so much good football on television to watch. Will these
four games be entertaining or anywhere near is entertaining as
the four wild card games that we watched the last weekend,
(02:09):
which we're absolutely spectacular. What stories will be talking about
come Monday when we roll back in for the show.
As we get ready, By the way, I'll be down
in New Orleans as we get ready for the national
title game between Clemson and l s U. We have
got a lot of fun football coming in the next
(02:29):
three days if you are a big football fan, like
pretty much everybody who was on this show and everybody
pretty much who was probably listening to this show is
We're gonna have a lot of fun. So the question
is as we inch closer and closer to these games,
that is now the eve of the Saturday games. Uh
what I'm looking right now at the absolute latest lines
(02:52):
as we get ready for those games, and uh that
they really haven't moved to that much. The expectation is
that Sunday night's game between Seattle and Green Bay where
it's gonna be frigid. I saw where they asked for
seven hundred shovel ers to help clear out some of
the snow there in Lambeau. That game, according to oddsmakers,
(03:14):
is expected to be the closest. Meanwhile, in the a
f C, Kansas City and the Ravens are prohibitive favorites,
and the forty Niners have also been a touchdown favorite
and have about stayed there throughout. So as we go
and get ready for this weekend's games, I'm gonna bring
(03:35):
in the crew. We do this every single what do
we do this every single Friday? Pretty much? We draft, right,
we draft what we think are going to be the
best games. I will also include L s U and
Clemson here and uh and there are five games, and
there are five of us to be able to draft.
(03:57):
So I will tell you that I think the s
game of the weekend, and I'm gonna include Monday in this.
I think the best game of the weekend is going
to be the Clemson and the L. S U. Game.
I think it's gonna be. Look, I'm not trying to
take anything away from the four NFL games, and I'll
be watching all of them. But if you told me
that I could only watch one of these five, I'm
(04:18):
going with L. S U and Clemson because I think
we have the potential to have and absolutely iconic college
football national title game featuring the number one overall draft
pick in Joe Burrow going up against the number one
overall draft pick in one Trevor Lawrence Joe Burrow. If
(04:39):
he takes L s U to fifteen and oh and
if they complete that perfect run, we're talking about one
of the best college football teams of all time. If
you consider all of the victories they've had against top
ten opponents, whether it's Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas back
when they play against them UH in the UH and
(05:02):
and Georgia when in the earlier part of the season,
and would finish it off with a top ten win
against Clemson. And meanwhile, if Clemson were able to get
the win, we're talking about Trevor Lawrence potentially playing his
entire college football career without losing a game and maybe
(05:24):
going with three straight national championships, which is kind of
just insane to even think about. So in this game
on Monday, the narratives that are being set up are
simply phenomenal. UH. And either way, it's gonna be a
lot of fun to kick back and watch this game
(05:44):
down in the Big Easy in New Orleans on Monday night.
So we'll be talking a lot about this game on
Monday and Tuesday doing the show live from New Orleans.
But that is UH, that is the game that I
would draft number one overall. Let me go ahead, Aid
and bring in the crew and find out who they
would draft number one overall in this UH. In this scenario, UH,
(06:08):
Danny G who's your number one pick. I'm gonna take
the early game tomorrow Minnesota Vikings at the San Francis.
It's yeah, Santa Clara is gonna be rocking. Two really
good defenses, both teams have excellent running games, and we
still don't exactly know what we have in either Kirk
Cousins or Jimmy g is one of those two quarterbacks
(06:30):
gonna stand up and make a big difference in this game.
It's gonna be fun to watch. I like that. I
think it's a solid choice. Strange stories coming out of Minnesota.
I I haven't seen a really detailed example, but I
don't understand how Adam Feeling ended up slicing his ankle
in a what should be a relatively calm practice. You know,
(06:53):
there's talk that he may not be able to go.
He's got stitches that should be impossible. I know we
had the in jury that happened to Tom Brady, remember
when his when his finger got got ripped and he
had to get stitches and everything else. But this is
I think that was a couple of years ago in
the in the in the practice when his hand got
caught on a uh, you know, like on a freak play.
(07:16):
But that's a little bit easier for me to understand
as a quarterback how your hand gets caught on a
helmet or whatever it was, than it is to figure
out how in the world does Adam Feeling get so
injured at his ankle that he needs stitches that he
gets a bad enough cut, especially when you already knew
that Feeling had uh, you know, tender hamstring all season long.
(07:39):
It seems like he would be going particularly easy, uh,
and not putting himself in a position where he can
injure himself in any way. So that's troubling. I think
if you're a Viking fan to think that theeland who
finally seemed like he was rounding back into form and
made a huge play on the deep ball against the
Saints too effectively nearly win that game for the Vikings,
(08:02):
that he could injure himself as severely as he did. Uh.
That's uh, that's troubling. I'm on the Vikings, by the way,
plus seven. I like the Vikings to keep this close,
but that does make me a little bit nervous. Dub
what game you got? Well, First, if I had the
overall number one pick, I would go with your selection.
Must see I mean, I think this is has the
(08:22):
potential of being an all time classic, and for all
the reasons you mentioned. You know, l s U going
for the perfect year in Clemson their twenty nine and
oh the last two seasons, so I think that is
gonna be an unbelievable scene. But for me, with what
I have left, I'm gonna go with Titans Ravens because
I'm really curious to see how these Titans come out
to play after such a such a huge, huge win
(08:43):
against New England and last week. I'm curious to see
if Derrick Henry can once again put the team on
his back and carry of the offense. And I want
to see if Bryan Tannehill can bounce back because he
really didn't play very well last week. And for the Ravens,
a lot of these guys haven't played a meaningful football
game since mid Tomber, so they there could be a
Russ factor here for Baltimore. So uh yeah, that's the
(09:05):
game I'm gonna go with, see if the Titans can
pull off another upset win and move to the a
f C Championship game. Three weeks off for the Ravens
is a huge amount of time to not play for
many of their players, a game that really matters very much.
And I'm still curious about this mark ingram caf injury
(09:26):
reports are that he's gonna go, and it would stun
you if he did not attempt to go, given the
circumstances and scenarios at play here, but the fact that
he hasn't really practiced and he is such a linchpin
of their readoption attack and also, uh, the safety valve
for Lamar Jackson throwing short you know when when everything
(09:47):
else falls apart, is I think, uh a little bit alarming.
And what I wonder you mentioned Ryan Tannehill did not
play well. I didn't play well at all. He had
two fumbles and an interception through for seven the two
yards in the in the game. It's interesting I went back, uh,
because the twentieth anniversary of the Music City Miracle was
(10:08):
this week, in fact, Wednesday, when we had Mike Keith
on the radio here the voice of the Titans who
made that iconic call. And I looked at the stats
because they were all this oral history of the of
the twenty year anniversary of the Music City Miracle, and
Steve McNair through for almost the identical amount of yards
(10:29):
as Ryan Tannehill in that game UH for the Music
City Miracles, the first playoff win ever of Steve McNair's career,
much like it was the first playoff win ever of
Ryan Tannehill's career. And UH and McNair obviously made bigger
and better plays as the as the playoff run continued.
So I'm curious whether he can follow Ryan Tannehill can
(10:51):
follow that that example and UH and play a lot
looser and with a lot uh, you know, just a
lot more of the same sort of panache that he
showed in the final ten games of the year. Or
are the Ravens gonna stifle him again? I agree with you.
I think it's gonna be an incredible game. What about you, Eddie?
You got so we got the Clemson I I think
(11:13):
Clemson l s Who's gonna be the best game? I
agree with dub I think on some level that it's
hard for me to say that I wouldn't watch the
Titans and the Ravens is my top pick in the NFL. UH.
It's hard for me to be objective on that because
I've been a season ticket holder for twenty years now
for the Titans. But who would you take? Uh and
roll with Eddie in your in your draft here, Well,
(11:34):
I would also take the college football national title game
if I had the number one pick. That being said,
I'm pretty happy with the fourth pick of getting what
is likely going to be a matchup of future Hall
of Fame quarterbacks in Aaron Rodgers in green Bay hosting
Russell Wilson and Seattle. You've got the Seahawks seven and
one away from home one eight and one, and green
(11:54):
Bay seven and one at home this year, So I
think that one will be a very good matchup. Green
Bay only three and two against playoff teams, uh, they
eight and one is a number that I think is
pretty extraordinary for how good Russell Wilson has been usually
the number, you know, the twelfth man, and all the
talk about how much of a home field advantage the
(12:14):
Seattle Seahawks have, they haven't been very good at home, uh,
you know, in the grand scheme of things, especially compared
to how good they have been on the road. Um
so so yeah, I I think that Seattle has a
very good chance as a four and a half point
underdog to go on the road and beat the Packers.
And if that happened. Can you imagine? I mean, it's
(12:35):
possible that the Vikings could pull off the upset and
the Seahawks could end up hosting the NFC Championship Game
as the five seed, because both the five and the
six are still alive uh in the in the postseason
there and so the Seahawks aren't just alive for the
NFC Championship game if they beat the if they beat
the Packers, they will know by the time they play
(12:57):
on Sunday night. Hey, we could being to win this
game and play for the NFC Championship at home in
front of our home fans. Even though Seattle hasn't been
very good both Super Bowl winning quarterbacks, especially for Aaron Rodgers,
how many more years is he going to be in
this good of a position to finally get that second
Super Bowl? And look, the first Super Bowl is what
(13:19):
validates you. That's kind of how we judge in this
day and age, uh, the overall quality of a of
a quarterback, but getting that second one puts you in
a different stratosphere than having just one. And especially as
good as Aaron Rodgers has been of his generation of quarterbacks,
(13:39):
he definitely feels like the kind of guy who should
have more than one super Bowl, much like Peyton Manning
did when he finished off his career by getting that
second Super Bowl. I think that was a big statement.
Got to two and two all time in the Super Bowls.
I mean, look, Brady is off the charts with six,
but getting two is pretty monumentally massive. And so for
(14:00):
Aaron Rodgers, he gets ready for that game at Lambeau.
I think it's gonna be an incredible one on on
Sunday night. Uh, what about you? You got one game
the left Roberto, who are you taking well? And he
took my game alytic because it's on a Sunday on
Sunday have more time to watch football than into on Saturdays. Uh, well,
I guess I go with the Chiefs and the and
the Texans. Uh. I'm not a believer in any read
(14:22):
when it comes to the playoffs, I think that he
always falls short, and I think he's gonna fall short
again this year. I don't know if it's gonna because
because the Texas is gonna be in the super Bowl again,
and he read to me, is the Dusty Baker of
of the NFL. We can can win the big Game.
And I'm interested to see what happens against the Texans.
We may have to do a I believe I have
do I you you you have the list in front
(14:42):
of you right now. Uh Danny G I think I
have the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl right new
preseason p Yeah, you need a new NFC team, Roberto
Chiefs to beat the the Saints. Saints, and Roberto also
needs a new NFC team. He picked the Saints as well.
Dub needs a new a f C team. He picked
the Patriots because we all all every one of our
(15:04):
teams at least that we had in the Super Bowl
made the playoffs, which is actually kind of a surprise,
you know, given how things can go. I still feel
good about the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl overall. Um,
But if I had to pick somebody new in the
NFC now in order to to play against the Chiefs,
uh man, that's that's kind of tough. I mean, I
(15:26):
think I'd have to go with the forty Niners because
they're kind of a substantial favor right now, and they're
gonna get to play at home. Uh So, I mean,
I guess I'd take the safe play and go forty
Niners now, as my new replacement for for the NFC,
but I still like the Chiefs to win the Super
Bowl overall. Who would you go as a new team,
dub Yeah, I need uh, I need a new team
(15:48):
in the A s C. I'm gonna go with the
Chiefs as well, because I actually have them in real
life to win the Super Bowl. So I'm gonna roll
with them. Yeah. I think that we're setting up for
a Chiefs and a Ravens, a f C champ pionship game,
which would be pretty electric to see what exactly could
happen there. But I like the Chiefs better. I just
like Mahomes. I think he's more reliable. I think his
(16:10):
game he's he's been more challenged. I mean, look, if
d Ford could have lined up on side, they would
have been in perfect shape to potentially win the Super
Bowl last year. So I don't even think this is
remotely difficult. I'm sticking with the Chiefs. What about you, Roberto?
What would you flip to in the NFC? I guess
I'm gonna go here. I'm gonna I'm gonna go with
the Seahawks. Taking the Seahawks here, that's a pretty bold pull.
(16:33):
Uh so uh we'll see, uh, we'll see exactly what
ends up happening. All right, there's the early draft on
Friday of the weekend including Monday, the five games to
come from the five of Us, and like I said,
it's gonna be a pretty extraordinary uh raw role as
we get going for Saturday, Sunday and Monday's games. Be
(16:54):
sure to catch live editions about kicked the coverage with
Clay Travis weekdays at six am Eastern three in Pacific
Lands Taylor at the Lands Taylor on Twitter, Jocks down
in Birmingham, Lt. Can you believe that Mike Leach is
now the head coach of Mississippi State. I am so
excited that he finally gets an opportunity in the SEC.
(17:17):
It's long overdue, I know, you being it's in a
sea fan, there were moments where there was some flirtation there.
We always believe that Mike Leach got some of these interviews,
or he did get some of these interviews, but he
just uh, I think he freaked out the powers that
be that actually, you know, had discussions with him because
he's such a weird guy. Bottom line, he can coach
(17:38):
and Mississippi State needed that spark especially after Old miss
going out hiring Lane Kiffin. I brought Mike Leach earlier
this week, um, when he was kind of off the
radar on this whole thing, and I said, look, if
Missisippi State is able to hire Mike Leach, I think
it's it's a bigger jolt, uh than what old Mr
Has been able to do with Lane Kiffin. I think
(17:58):
he's a better coach. Um, you know, I know it's
a different style in the SEC. I think he's always
one of this opportunity. He's a former assistant in Kentucky. Um,
I think it's great for Mississippi State. I asked my
crew out there on social media to vote who would
you rather have as the head coach of your football program,
Lane Kiffin or Mike Leach. Thirty three thousand people voted.
(18:22):
You can still go vote, by the way at Clay
Travis if you scroll down. Sixty three of people said
they'd rather have Mike Leach. So I didn't have any
idea what the numbers would be, but that's pretty substantial. Yeah.
We did kind of the same thing earlier in the
week because, uh, you know, we had one of our
co host was battling and saying Lane Kiffin was the
(18:42):
better coach, and I said love, because not, It's not
an easy place to win. This is the guy that
had them in the top five back in two thousand
and eight and all of his years close to a
decade in Love but he never had a losing season. Yeah,
and Pullman's much much of the same. And you go
back just two thousand and eight tea where he is
eleven game. You know, he wins the Apple Cup. He's
(19:03):
in the Pact twelve championship, possibly playing for a chance
to go to a college football playoff. I mean these
are equivalent jobs, comfortable jobs to what he's gotten. Startful.
I think it would be more difficult because you know,
the Big twelve seems to be a one team league
right now. The Pact twelve is a complete mess. The
SEC West is the most difficult division in in football.
(19:24):
But still, I mean, if you wanted the jolt of
the system, this is the guy. Uh So, Michael Leach
is now at Mississippi State, the Pirate. He was down
in Key West when he got interviewed. They flew him in.
I believe they're gonna have a press conference today to
officially introduce him. Um and uh, And that's gonna be
just I mean, can you imagine the zane nous that's
(19:47):
going to happen in the state of Mississippi between Lane
Kiffin and Mike Leach. No, it's gonna be incredible. I mean,
the theater is gonna be great because I do think
Lane Kiffin gets more and more comfortable and you never
know what's going to happen with a freshwater. Mike Leach
is just such a strange, strange guy. And you know,
week to week some of these press conferences, you know,
(20:08):
we carry being here in Birmingham, we carry the Gust
miles On press conference weekly, the Nick Saban press conference,
you know, and those are you just totally tune out
of them. I am very interested week to week on
hearing Mike Leach his press conference coming out of start. Yeah,
no doubt at all. We're gonna continue to talk about
this a little bit during the course of the program
this morning. But let's go into the NFL. Uh, with
(20:32):
the games that are going well, let's let's go ahead,
and because we will talk to you before the Clemson
and the L s U game. Probably what are you
expecting Clemson L s U since we started talking college football,
Let's talk that guy. I mean, I think this has
the potential to be an all time iconic game between
Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow. I can't wait to see
(20:53):
what's gonna happen on Monday Night. What do you anticipate there?
This line has gotten all the way out to to
l s U as a six point favorite, which is
wild considering how much of an impact we saw based
on l s U beating down Oklahoma and maybe a
lot of people out there feeling as if Clemson were
(21:13):
fortunate to survive against Ohio State. Well, look, it's been
an incredible run for l s U. And you know,
if they closed the deal, you can make an argument
one of the greatest teams we've ever seen in college
football and one of the few to go fifteen, and
oh Clempson obviously did it last year. It seems like
this is one of those teams of destiny. But I
think we discount what Clemson was able to do getting
down double digits against Ohio State and Ohio States me
(21:35):
have one of the top two or three defenses in
college football, and once they got adjusted, let's not forget
Clemson had such a weak regular season. You know, they
hadn't seen anything like Ohio State the entire year. So
to make those adjustments to come back to win that game.
And now we're talking about a quarterback that's twenty six
and it was the starting quarterback a team that's won
nine consecutive games, and you're giving me six points. I
(21:58):
love this LSU offense, but I think Clemson is gonna
be able to move the football against him. I love
Clemson plus the six. All right, let's go into the
NFL games. Let's start with this purely for entertainment, not
for gambling perspectives. You can only watch one of the
four NFL games. Which one is going to be the best?
(22:19):
To me, it probably, I mean, it's gonna sound disgusting
because when you just look at the total, I mean
it's it's not one of these. It's gonna play in
the fifties. Probably Seattle in Green Bay. Yeah. I just
think it's gonna be the most competitive. You know, I
think it's pretty incredible Minnesota was able to go on
the road and to knock off Drew Brees in the
New Orleans Saints. Um, I just don't know if Kirk
Cousins has got it back to back weekends, you know,
(22:40):
after winning his first postseason game, and Adam Feeling, you know,
being questionable. That's gonna be. Don't you wonder how in
the world he got stitches and cut himself so bad
at a practice like that just seems almost impossible to
do well. And that's just one of those guys that
you've got to have out there. I mean, there are
three guys they've got to have. They've got a Dick obviously,
gotta have Cook, and they've got and then offense just
(23:00):
isn't the same without feeling. And so for him to
be questionable, I think San Francisco well rested and to
me still maybe the best team overall in the NFL. UM,
I just don't think they've got much of a shot there.
You're Tennessee Titans. I know, it would be an incredible story,
and Derrick Henry is a guy that can take a
game over. But Baltimore, UM, remember they the Orioles have
(23:21):
lost the game since Baltimore lost the game last I mean,
that's how incredible that that is pretty wild. It's way
back in September. So this team continues to cruise their
heavy favorite UM I just don't have a lot of
confidence in Houston. I've never seen him in an NFC
championship game. So you know, down sixteen, they were able
to come back. I love the Shawn Watson, I don't
buy that. But I think when you get to Russell Wilson,
(23:41):
Aaron Rodgers, both quarterbacks that have been to Super Bowls
have won a Super Bowl, I think it's gonna be
an incredible matchup in Green Bay. So uh, in the
we we talked about this a couple of days ago.
We were discussing who has the most to win and
the most to lose? Um for the quarterbacks. And obviously
we talk about the wins and losses for quarterbacks in
(24:01):
a different way than we do every other position. For example. Uh,
you know, we we don't sit around and say, boy,
you know mark Ingram really can't win the big game? Uh?
You know and he and arguably it's true, right, Like
mark Ingram has had a lot of success with the
with the Saints, but he hasn't been able to win
the big game. And uh in the NFL, right, and
we're not saying that now about him in Baltimore. Uh,
(24:23):
and say, boy, can he now get it done? It's
all about the quarterbacks. And we came to the conclusion
that the quarterback that had the most to lose in
the of these eight remaining was Lamar Jackson because he
still hasn't won a playoff game, because he didn't play
that well last year in the playoffs. Yes, he's won
the m v P, but if he lost in the
(24:43):
first round for a second straight year at home, a
lot of the doubters would re emerge for Lamar Jackson
and say, Okay, that offense works fine in the regular season,
but it doesn't work when you get to the postseason.
And then we were kind of in a different debate
about who exactly among all of the available quarterbacks had
the most to gain. Who would you say has the
(25:05):
most to gain of these eight quarterbacks? Do you and
do you agree that Lamar has the most to lose?
I would go Lamar second most to lose. I think
the most to loses Patrick Mahomes just based on the
fact that we thought that was a team that was
going through the Super Bowl. They host an a f
C championship game last year. The offense was moving and
they never touched the ball in overtime, and that's the
(25:25):
guy that won the m v P last year. So
if you lose back to back games in Arrowhead, I
think that would be a bad loss for Patrick Mahomes.
As you're sitting as a mind at that point. Favorite.
I don't disagree with Lamar Jackson, but he's only twenty two.
This is only his second postseason start. The most to
game for me would be to Shawn Watson. If you're
able to win back to back postseason games and get
(25:45):
Houston to their first ever a f C Championship game.
We still don't give Deshaun Watson enough credit. A guy
just a few years ago that won a Nahville Championship
for Dabo Sweeney and Clemson. I mean, this is still
an elite quarterback that really doesn't get his due. And
if he was able to go on the road and
finally get the Texans moving in the postseason, I think
he would have the most games. I know you know
(26:06):
him well because you're down in Alabama. We're talking to
Lance Taylor at the Lance Taylor on Twitter on Twitter
jocks down in Birmingham. But I feel like the nation
really doesn't know how good Derrick Henry has been this year,
and they started to see it against the Patriots because
thirty million some odd people tuned in for that game,
(26:29):
and they might remember Derrick Henry from what he did
winning a national championship with Alabama. But how much of
a physical freak is Derrick Henry? If anything, I feel
like he's kind of under the radar, and this postseason
run is making people aware of how good he is,
in conjunction with the fact that he also was the
NFL's leading rusher uh this season as well. Well, you know, Clay,
(26:52):
I go back to you know, six weeks, seven weeks
ago when when he started to really turn it on,
and you know, I mentioned him in the m v
P conversation. I mean, he's a guy that has been
under the radar because Tennessee hasn't been a dominant team
on what everybody was talking about Lamar Jackson and they
were talking about Russell Wilson. This is the guy that
was taking over games for the Tennessee Titans. And they
(27:14):
said it on the broadcast Saturday night against New England.
You know, once I got to the fourth quarter, it
was like the Patriots didn't want to tackle this guy.
I mean, he's six three, he's a legitimate two d
fifty pounds. He's a legitimate sub four or five guy.
Um and he you know, people were a little concerned
with as much as he touched the football coming out
of Alabama. It hasn't mattered. I mean he has gotten
(27:35):
better as the season has gone along, and you look
at his production. Six of his last seven games he's
gone a hundred plus. He's been that good. And I
think when you're talking about top five candidates for MVP,
he's obviously not gonna win it. It's Quarterbacks Award. Lamar
Jackson will win it, but he's got to be in
the top three, four or five. Can you imagine, Like
one of the most amazing stats that I have ever
(27:56):
heard is from when he was in high school at
the Eve. The number is he ran for over twelve
thousand yards in high school in high school in his
high school career. I think that's number. Somebody can look
this up at one of the one of the producers.
I think that's the number. I can't imagine anybody. I
don't know how that's possible, because what are you playing?
If you start your freshman year in high school and
(28:18):
you're averaging playing twelve games a year, then you're playing
what forty eight games, and we're dividing twelve thousand by eight.
I mean, he's averaging two hundred and fifty yards a
game four years in every game. Can you imagine, like
you've seen some of those highlights they occasionally I think
they broke it out during the Patriots game against the Titans.
(28:40):
Can you imagine being in high school, like as bad
as it is to be an NFL player or certainly
a college player, trying to tackle Derrick Henry. I believe
the number is twelve thousand yards? Can you imagine trying
to be like a five nine hundred forty pounds safety, Uh,
you know, or or linebacker? You know, like hitting the
hole when when Derrick and coming through. Yeah, look I'm
(29:02):
looking at it. Just because you said it, I quickly
pulled it. Uh you leave. Is where he went to
high school, and he went over twelve thousand yards on
undred carry, So he averaged eight point seven yards per
carry in high school, two hundred and fifty two yards
per game, and had a hundred and fifty three judges.
I mean, can you imagine, I mean, no, no, you're
(29:25):
you're going low if or you're just getting oh a
you're just gonna act like you guessed wrong and went
the wrong way. I'm not it's not worth it. Well,
you take a knee of the helmet from from Derrick Henry.
It's a five nine eighty pound defensive back. I mean,
you're talking about you're in protocol for the rest of
the season. But I mean, I think we forget his
(29:45):
final year in Alabama when he went over twenty two
hundred yards on three hundred and ninety five carries, which
is something you'll never see with a Knick Saban running
back again. I mean, to shoulder that kind of workload
and a twenty eight touchdowns, you know in round to
winning eyes and trophy. Um, yeah, I mean I think
we have slept on Derrick. Can we his entire career? Yeah?
(30:05):
I Mean that's the thing with me when I watch
him is you watched him at Alabama and I mean
he sometimes went over forty carries and games and uh,
and you think there's no way that somebody could do that.
I mean, I think he's almost bionic and superhuman in
that he gets better. And I think they've just kind
of realized that eventually in the NFL, because you remember
(30:27):
even at Alabama, it might take fifteen or twenty carries
for him to really get a stride, right, I mean,
and there's not very many backs that you can say
that about. And in the NFL, where you have fewer
snaps a lot of time than you do in college,
right where they run faster speed offense and and everything else,
getting somebody to twenty five carries can be really hard.
(30:48):
And it's like the Titans have finally just said, Okay,
we're gonna get him twenty five carries, even if that
means sometimes you know, we're we're not necessarily hitting the
same body blows you saw and you have seen. When
you get him into that twenty plus category, defenders just
melt off of him because they don't want to tackle
and they're tired, and it's even harder to do. Yeah.
(31:08):
The ultimate definition of that is I'll go back to
the two thousand and fifteen iron ball and I had
Auburn plus the points and you probably remember this. I
think they were getting sixteen and Alabama's up like fourteen
or fifteen in the running the clock out and they
give it to Henry, you know, just thinking, you know,
they'll get one more first down, and he takes it
like forty yards to the house and he ends up
having forty six carries in that game for two hundred
(31:30):
and seventy one yards and on his final carry they
get the cover. Yeah, I remember that I had I
had Alabama to cover in that game. Yeah, and uh,
and I mean it's just absolutely incredible to to think
about what he can do. Now we'll see whether or
not the Ravens can slow him down or whether Ryan
Tannehill is going to be able to make plays, and uh,
and everything else, anything else that jumps out at you
(31:52):
as we let you go to the break here about
these uh, these playoff games in the NFL, or anything
that you like in particular that you think it gonna
be significant in these four Well, we saw road teams
go three and one last week. I think it's gonna
be flipped around. I think it's gonna be a lot
of home domination this week. And now you don't want
to hear that as a Titans fan. I think the
one road team that's really got a shot is Seattle
(32:13):
and Russell Wilson. Um. What would it mean? By the way,
do you agree with me that Kirk Cousins is probably
the most criticized NFL player this side of Eli Manning.
If he went and won against San Francisco the week
after winning against the Vikings, what would it mean for
cousins career? All right, would be incredible. And for Minnesota
Vikings fans. You know two years ago when it was
(32:33):
case Keenum and they had to walk off against New
Orleans and they were hosting the NFC Championship game against
Nick Folton Eagles, you thought it was their year, the
first team that was going to host a Super Bowl.
And Viking fans, they've been to the Super Bowl before,
they've never won, won their starving. If they were able
to go on the road win this game, then you
set up such a winnable game in the NFC Championship game,
(32:53):
you know, on the road, whether it's Seattle or Green Bay.
So this would be huge. It would give Kirk Cousins
uh um, you know, a lot of confidence and a
watch out of Minnesota is able to win this game.
I would not be surprised at all if they went one.
More good stuff as always, that's Lance Taylor at the
Lance Taylor on Twitter. Five Jocks down in Birmingham appreciated
(33:13):
my man. Yeah, and the weekend. Fox Sports Radio has
the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all

within the I Heart Radio app. Search f s R
to listen live. I know it's high school, but during
the break I just couldn't stop thinking about Derrick Henry
averaging over two hundred and fifty yards per game for
(33:37):
his entire high school career and rushing for twelve thousand.
Over twelve thousand yards in high school? Is that I
mean that might be. I know we talked about, you know,
Roger Marris hitting sixty one, Lou Garrig all the and
Cal Ripken all the games that they played in in
(33:58):
a row. Is over twelve thousand yards in high school?
One of those things that you just here and it
doesn't even seem like it should be possible. They've got
twelve thousand yards in high school. And you're starting as
a freshman, so you have to be like, think about
(34:19):
your average high school freshman. You you're like a relatively
small dude, right Like most people when they are high
school freshman are nowhere near close a good enough to
play varsity anything. And if you're really really good, you
might get to play varsity minutes as a true freshman.
(34:40):
But to be so good that over a course of
four years you average over two hundred and fifty yards
per game. The guy had fifty five touchdowns during his
sensenior year. That's the stat that blows my mind. I
don't even think my high school team had that many
total touchdowns while I was there. I mean, fifty five.
What I really wish there was film of I know
(35:05):
we've seen some of the highlight tape of him, and
like how big he I mean, he's huge on an
NFL field. First of all, right, like among the largest
men in the world, the biggest, strongest, fastest dudes. Imaginable.
He stands out as like my god, like he is
a freak. But to put him in a in a
group with UH, with high school kids is kind of
(35:28):
unbelievable to think about. And he is such a good
dude in my limited interaction with him, and my nine
year old now is a huge Derrick Henry fan. And
so I remember some of you may remember last year
we had I let my nine year old out of
school for the NFL Draft, which we had in Nashville,
(35:48):
and Derrick Henry was going around doing a lot of
different media hits. So he came by our show and
I let my nine year old meet him there and
uh and it was like the greatest day of my
nine year olds wife. But he's gotten a chance a
couple of times just around town to meet Derrick Henry.
And he's such an engaging good dude. Uh and uh
(36:10):
and man, I mean to be as good as he is,
I think he's just way under the radar. I think
there are a ton of people listening to us right
now that like they remember Derrick Henry when he was
at Alabama and then they knew that he was in
the NFL. But you know, just kind of maybe kind
of paid attention every now and then you see that
highlight and I think from the moment basically he went
(36:32):
and did that ninety nine yard run against Jacksonville. I
believe it was last year, right during the Thursday night
football game that a lot of people were watching. He's
been He's been the best running back in the league
by far since that yard run. But I feel like
a lot of people really took note of him against
the Patriots and are recognizing how good he is. And
(36:55):
I gotta be honest with you, I don't think the
Titans had any clue how good he was because they
rarely would get him into that you know, twenty and
twenty five Carrie range, which is really when he made
all of his money for Alabama, getting him up there
where he could lean on a defense, and the Titans,
I remember correctly, we're talking about trying to trade him,
(37:18):
uh last year before the trade deadline, and then you know,
he just kind of took off the second half of
last year and since since Ryan Tannehill got the job
in the final ten weeks of of this season, he's
been unstoppable. So we'll see whether or not that continues
against the Baltimore Ravens. But the way that he played
(37:40):
against the Patriots, I agree with LT. He looked like
one of the five most valuable offensive players in the
entirety of the NFL. And if he could play that
way against the Ravens again. First of all, he's an
understricted free agent, not undrestricted free agent, but I mean
he's the Titans, because he was the second round pick,
can franchise him. They're gonna have to figure out actually
(38:00):
what to do with him because he hasn't made that
much money so far. And UH and his contract is
now up and he's had a hell of a contract year.
This is outkicked the coverage with Clay Travis. It is
the Friday, the calm before the storm, to Saturday Divisional
NFL Playoff around games to Sunday Divisional NFL Playoff around games,
(38:23):
and Monday night we've got l s U Clemson down
in New Orleans, all of that rolling together for three
straight days of pretty outstanding football, a crescendo on the season.
We have only right now seven games remaining in the
NFL season, and four of them will be played on
(38:43):
Saturday and Sunday to set the table for the final
four in the NFL, the a f C, and the
NFC Championship games. We not surprisingly, have been breaking down
those games a great deal all week, will continue to
do so as we inched closer and closer to UH
the kickoff on Saturday afternoon of the first game between
Kansas City and Texas the Texans. But we also have
(39:08):
major news in the world of coaching, which we kind
of just hanted at so far. Mississippi State fired their
head coach, Joe moorehead in the wake of a really
disastrous Bowl game performance. But really everything got put in
motion in the SEC with the Egg Bowl. Now, if
(39:28):
you're out there listening to me, I know that we
have listeners in all fifty states right now listening along,
and forty nine of those states may not know as
much about the Egg Bowl. Uh, some of you do.
That Mississippi and Mississippi State is a brutal rivalry. These
two schools hate each other. Uh. They are the smallest
(39:51):
schools in the SEC West. In many ways, they're fighting
aggressively against each other, oftentimes to try to avoid being
at the bottom of the SEC West pile. It is
a brutal, nasty, awesome, exhilarating rivalry. And so most recently
(40:11):
in the Egg Bowl, it was a twenty one to
twenty Mississippi State win. But the way the game ended,
for those of you who forgot old, miss scored with
I believe it was like four seconds to play and
the receiver who scored immediately got up, ran to the
(40:31):
back of the end zone, hiked his leg and pretended
to pee on the field like he was a dog.
This was a celebration that was fame made famous a
couple of years before by DK Metcalfe, who everybody now
knows if you're an NFL fan, he didn't remember him
at Old Miss. You now know him as the guy
(40:54):
who went off for a hundred and sixty yards receiving
in his rookie debut game on behalf of the Seahawks
against the Eagles. But before that, A. J. Brown and
DK Metcalf, both of whom could be integral parts of
their respective Seahawks and Titans game team games uh in
the Divisional round of the playoffs. They were teammates on
(41:16):
Ole Miss, and in fact they were in the same
recruiting class at ole Miss. All Right, So DK Metcalf
two years ago does the dog peeing celebration in the
end zone, uh, and then it is mimicked by the
receiver Elijah Moore. The official immediately throws a flag and
(41:38):
as a result, the the extra point is moved back
fifteen yards. The kicker then misses the extra point, and
as a result of the way this game goes down,
Ole Miss fires Matt Luke. There then head football coach
really directly tied to this celebration, because it's likely that
(42:02):
Old Miss would have gone for two potentially in that scenario,
and if Old Miss had won that game, then Matt
Luke would have kept his job, but the peeing celebration
was kind of the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back,
and so he is gone. He's fired. But Mississippi State
is also not happy with Joe Moorehead, and they had
(42:25):
been planning on firing Joe Moorehead if if he had
not won the Egg Bowl. So Joe Moorehead gets to
keep his job. The problem is Mississippi State people are
still not happy with him, and Old miss goes and
hires Lane Kiffin and immediately jolts the entire program with
(42:48):
a great deal of energy, and Joe Moorehead looks even
worse relative to Lane Kiffin. Then Mississippi State advances to
a bowl game there six and six, They get beaten
by a mediocre Louisville team. They have team fights, the
starting quarterback can't start because he got punched into practice,
(43:09):
and Joe Moorehead gets fired, and so as a result,
Mississippi State is back in the coaching search. Well, as
if this thing can't get any whackier, Mississippi State is
close to hiring Judge, Joe Judge, who is a former
Mississippi State player on the coaching staff with Bill Belichick
(43:30):
when the Giants sweep in and offer him the job instead.
So Mississippi State back to the drawing board and they
end up I think, getting the best possible candidate they
could have in terms of energizing their fan base. They
decide to hire Mike Leach. The other guy they really
(43:50):
seemed to look at aggressively is Steve Sarkisian, the offensive
coordinator at Alabama, formerly from Washington and USC. And so
as a result, Mike Leach hired away from UH Washington State.
The Pirate now headed back to the SEC. And I
say back to the SEC because a lot of people
(44:10):
don't remember that Mike Leach was the offensive coordinator for
Kentucky back in the day UH. And so as a result,
you now have a situation where the SEC West is
just absolutely stacked with talent. When you look at the coaches,
(44:30):
You've got Nick Saban, who's the greatest coach of our
lives in college football. You've got Jimbo Fisher who won
a national championship at Florida State. You've got coach at
Ogeron who is coaching on Monday to win a national
championship for l s U Gus miles On at Auburn
who has played and coached for a national championship. UH
(44:53):
with UH with Auburn in that back in the day
against Florida State, they almost one, they gave up late
touchdown past to Jamis Winston. Then you've got Lane Kiffin,
who has had a lot of success in coaching. I
would say it's fair to say, considering he's only forty
four years old. UH. Then you've got Mike Leach who
took I believe Texas Tech to number one in one
(45:16):
of the early polls that season with the Michael Crabtree
year when he beat Texas and UH then went on
the road and lost to Oklahoma. If I'm not mistaken,
I think he got him to number one in a
few polls h and has wanted a historically high rate
at both Texas Tech and Washington State relative to the
(45:37):
success levels otherwise of those programs. And then, oh, by
the way, you've got an offensive lineman, Sam Pittman, who
is the coach of Arkansas that isn't that proven one
way or the other. But you're talking about an incredible
bevy of coaching talent. I love this higher from Mississippi State.
It makes the Egg Bowl and it makes the state
(45:57):
of Mississippi in general and absolute battleground one of the
most entertaining states for football in the nation, given how
intense this rivalry is between Mississippi and Mississippi State. And
I want to bring in my crew and see what
they think about this. You guys obviously aren't really paying
that much attention to the Egg Bowl on a general basis.
But Danny g when you saw this, did you think
(46:20):
to yourself, Hey, maybe this is a story I'm gonna
start paying attention to. This is phenomenal for college football,
particularly if you're an SEC fan, but if you're just
a college football fan in general, there's gonna be a
lot of good storylines that come out of the state
of Mississippi. Now, I can't believe you were able to
trace it all the way back to that. Yeah, it's
amazing the timeline on everything. It might be the greatest
(46:40):
thing that's ever happened to Mississippi athletics history, uh that
that they had that peace ceremony, because it ended up
cost an old miss Its coach, and it might well
have ended up costing in some way Mississippi State. It's
coach too. Now. You talked about it a little bit
with Lance Taylor on Mike Leach and how he's kind
of strange. He's definitely a different character. But the reaction
(47:02):
yesterday I read a couple of articles and there's one
in the USA Today on their website where they say
Mississippi State backed themselves into a corner and that they
think Mike Leach is gonna get exposed, his offense will
be exposed by better college athletes playing against him, and
that he was a desperate higher What do you think
about the criticism who said that, let's see that is duh,
(47:29):
we need to pull the clip. I mean the Leach
and Dan Walkin have had a feud going. Ah, that
explains this artist. So I think he took a shot.
You remember that dub when we had him on the UH,
we had him on the Wins and Losses podcast. First
of all, he's phenomenal. If you're if you're out there
and you're listening to us right now and you're like, hey,
I wonder what Mike Leach is really like. He spent
two and a half hours with us on the Wins
(47:50):
and Losses podcast, So if you've got a long drive coming.
First of all, we got Eddie George up this week,
and that's pretty outstanding. I think you guys are really
gonna enjoy it. But dub I mean that interview we
did with Mike Leach, I mean it kind of gives
you a good sense for what he's truly like. It
sure does, and you know you're right. It is a
full two and a half hours because Mike Leach did
most of the talking another one and I do remember
(48:12):
he did not uh, he did not mince words when
he spoke about Dan Wilkin and then interview, Yeah, he
absolutely eviscerated him. I mean, I we could pull the
audio probably at some point. But it's not a surprise
that Dan Wilkin, who was a writer at the USA Today,
would say that Mississippi State made a bad higher because
he doesn't like Mike Leach. So I mean that was
(48:33):
like kind of self evident. I think it's a really
good higher. Now. I don't know how successful Mike Leach
is gonna be that there's a strong argument to be
made that Mississippi State is the toughest job in the SEC,
and Mississippi State fans get mad about that. But they've
won one SEC title since in their history and it
was in ninety one. So they have never won a
(48:54):
football title in the SEC in a post uh, in
a post uh, you know, like uh Pearl Harbor era,
not that we're like the post Pearl Harbor air is
a pretty big one, but going all the way back
to one, they have never won a uh, they have
never won an SEC title since then. And you can argue, Look,
(49:16):
I don't think Kentucky is a great job. I don't
think Vanderbilt is a great job. But it's easier to
win in the SEC East right now, uh than it
is in the SEC West. So I think you can
make an argument that that Missisippi State is the worst
job in the SEC. And so what I think will
happen is I think Leech will have historic success. That's
good for Mississippi State, which will still be not that
(49:40):
great in the grand scheme of things. I believe Mississippi
State and Vanderbilt are the only two SEC schools all
time that have a losing record. In other words, they
have lost. I think I'm correcting that they have lost
more games in their history as a football program than
they have won Uh, so this is not an easy job.
So this is about as good as a hire I
(50:01):
think as Mississippi State could possibly make. Dub you're an
Auburn fan, I mean you kind of know mi Mississippi State.
When you hear Mike Leach Mississippi State, are you like
me thinking to yourself, that's basically as good as Mississippi
State could do. Yeah. I do think that to myself,
and I was a little surprised Arkansas didn't make a
bigger run at them when they were looking for their
new head coach. And as an Auburn fan, I'm not
(50:22):
like that excited about this because that means that's another
game where Auburn and the rest of these teams the
SEC are gonna have to prepare for a Mike Leach offense.
And people can talk about how great SEC defenses are
and that his system won't work, but I just don't
buy that because he's had success every single place he's been.
At Texas Tech, he had an unbelievable record for that program,
(50:42):
and at Washington State he turned a program that was
like one and eleven before he got there and turned
them around and they were top fifteen in the country.
A few times during his tenure there. So I think
it's an unbelievable higher and as far as the stories
go and the storylines with Mike leg and Lane Kiffin
going head to in the state of Mississippi, egg Bowl,
like you mentioned, is now must watch TV on Thanksgiving
(51:05):
Day every single year that those two guys are in
their position. I think he'll have a higher quality of
player because there's so many good players within a three
or four hour drive of Starkville, Mississippi that don't exist
when you're in Lubbock, Texas or when you're up on
the Polouse in Washington State, like there just aren't that
many really good high school football players in close proximity
(51:29):
to you, And so I think he'll have a higher
level of talent than he's ever had before, which will
lead to, uh, you know, every bit as good of
a result as he had at Texas Tech and at
Washington State. Now it's tougher in the SEC, there's no doubt,
But you don't have to play nine games in conference either.
(51:50):
You get eight conference games, which means most of the
time Mississippi State tries to slot it so that they
get four out of conference wins, which means you get
Bowl eligible. If you win two games, you get to
play Kentucky every year, which helps. I know Mark Stoops
has had things going in a good way at Kentucky,
but that's a game that typically Mississippi State has had
a lot of success in, so that you feel like
(52:12):
you have a good chance of winning that game. And
then Arkansas is not very good, right, So I mean,
if you could beat Arkansas in Kentucky, you get Bowl eligible,
and then you would like to hope that you can
pluck away one of those guys every now and then
you know, maybe you beat an Auburn, or you beat
an L s U or you know, kind of cycle
up and find your way to win. Look, what Dan
Mullin did at Mississippi State was extraordinary. He got them
(52:33):
to number one overall. He got Dak Prescott there. I
think with what Dan Mullen has done in his first
two years at at Florida, there's nobody who can doubt
how good of a coach Dan Mullen is and was.
And I think he took Mississippi State to about the
apex of where they can go. But I think that
that Mike Leach has the potential to put him right
back there in a really entertaining fashion. What do you
(52:55):
think about this, Eddie? Like, you're a college football fan,
but when you saw Mike leached Mississippi State, what was
your first thought? Well, I know you would uh kind
of mentioned that this was a possibility. And I will
admit as a college football fan, I'm a sucker for
these rivalry games. Oh yeah, I always try and watch
the Apple Cup and the Egg Bowl and all those
types of game, right, I mean Arizona Arizona State games
that I normally wouldn't really care about, but if it's
(53:16):
that matchup, I always like watching it. So uh yeah,
the egg Bowl is always one of those ones I
try and catch if I can. And and now, uh
it is definitely going to be uh pretty close to
must CTV for for those types of programs. Yeah, you
know what, this is What I think is so great
about college football and college basketball to an extent, to
but more so for college football, is it's so intensely
(53:38):
regional and if you live in the States, you know,
like the Apple Cup you mentioned, if you lived in
the state of Washington, it's a big deal. Who wins
Washington Washington State. It may not be nationally usually a
big story. You know, back in the day when Clemson
wasn't very good, the game in South Carolina between Clemson
and South Carolina, huge game in that state. The game
(53:59):
in basketball and in football Louisville versus Kentucky, huge games.
If you don't live in those states, you don't necessarily
pick up on how bitterly partisan those games can be
and how fabulous of rivalries they are. And I feel
like the egg Bowl because most of the time it's
not a matchup of two really really good football programs
(54:20):
in terms of national scale, that it gets a little
bit under the radar. Like people know Alabama Auburn right
in state, huge Southern rivalry game, they know how big
that is. They might know historically in recent history Florida,
Florida State has been big right a lot of these
big games A and M and in Texas when they
used to play, and they should be playing again in
(54:42):
my opinion at some point in time, that rivalry needs
to come back. Those games have been national enough in
scope that people have been aware of them, but most
of the time the Egg Bowl hasn't been. And I
think it's gonna be musty television in Oxford this year. Uh,
for everybody out there to know what's gonna happen with
all the build up, it will occur with Leech and
with uh and with Kiffen, both of whom I I
(55:05):
bet we'll have a lot of interesting things to say
along the way. Be sure to catch live editions about
kick the Coverage with Clay Travis week days at six
am Eastern three am Pacific. Bringing now Alex Boone, eight
year NFL veteran played for the Vikings, and he played
for the forty Niners and I think most recently played
for Arizona. Alex, first time on the show. Appreciate you
(55:26):
coming on, man, Thanks so much for having me so
as a guy who played in the NFL as many
years as you did. Are you incredibly geeked up when
the playoffs get here? Is it feel different for you
even not playing now than it did in the regular season?
Is this, uh, just a different hype level for you? Oh?
Absolutely this This is like the real type of football
(55:46):
for me. And this is like the real defense with
a great quarterback and a fabulous running game. So you
know it's gonna be some hard hitting, some great strategic
matchups going on and really, this is like the real
type of football that you want to watch. Guys that
are really to win it. They know what's a mistake,
they know what they have to do to win the game.
And it's really like, hey, listen, who's gonna show up
and who's not. Yeah, And speaking of showing up, I mean,
(56:08):
how surprised were you that Kirk Cousins and the Vikings
showed up and beat the Saints last weekend? I will
say that I wasn't surprised that that that the Vikings did.
I was more surprised than Kirk did. I think we
all were. We were all waiting for that one moment
where he was like, all right, put it on my shoulders,
I can do this. We as a team are gonna
get over this hume together. And boy, they did it masterfully.
(56:29):
And and Mike Zimmer deserves a lot of credit because
you lost some players in the secondary and hold Drew
Brees on the year that he broke the touchdown rector. Like,
I think people overlooked this how well of a game
that was because it was so complimentary offense and defense.
All Right, So let's dive into some of these matchups.
And I appreciate you coming on with us, Alex Boone,
NFL veteran. Here, let's start with the first game that
(56:51):
we're gonna see tomorrow, the first kickoff, the Texans going
on the road against the Chiefs. Now, the Texans one
back in week six on the road and can the city,
But Kansas City seems to have gotten their defense fixed
since then. Do you give Deshaun Watson and the Texans
much of a chance to go on the road and
pull off the upset against Mahomes and the Chiefs. Absolutely,
(57:12):
they've done it before, the showing they can do it.
But I think the problem is gonna end up being
can they contain Mahomes? If you look at this defense,
and yeah, they are like re sizzled with jj wat back.
And if you didn't see that coming, blame yourself because
all week they all talked about it. This dude's back.
We're super excited. I can't wait to have him. Look
what he's gonna do. First Sat, the entire team was like,
(57:34):
all right, we belong here, we can do this. Let's
go have some fun. And you saw what DeShawn Watson
can do. But can you contain Patrick Mahomes? Probably not? Uh,
And so if you can't contain Patrick Mahomes, you're probably
not going to be able to win that game. What
about we were talking earlier about Derrick Henry. You played
high school football, you played college football. Can you believe
(57:54):
that Derrick Henry ran for over twelve thousand yards in
high school football down and Florida? I almost can because
I've seen the way he's been running over grown men.
I mean, when you watch him run, here's the thing
that bothers me and maybe just bothers you too. It
looks like he's almost in slow motion. But the minute
he hits someone, it like he viserates them. You're like, dude,
(58:14):
what just happened. You're supposed to tackle him, and nobody
can do it. So yeah, I believe it, And that
to me is why this game is gonna be a
little bit closer than people think. Like they're like, oh,
Lamar Jackson's gonna do this. Yeah, I get it. Lamar
is doing great. That offense is having fun. I've played
in it. I know how it goes. But Mike ravel
is really really smart. Dude. Look what he just did
to Bill Belichick. He had him screaming on the sideline.
(58:35):
Thank you. We've seen it for the first time ever.
Bill Belichick finally got phased. So do you think you
played on the offensive line? What does it feel like
to block for someone like Derrick Henry? You saw like
when he got when any time he gets to the
next level, it's like people are allergic to contact. None
of those dbs, none of those safeties, really want to
try to take him down. How much of a of
(58:57):
a geek job is that for you on the offensive
line when you see him get through the hole and
you know that he's going to punish somebody, Dude, it's huge.
I've seen guys like cry on the other side. They're like, hey, please,
just don't run tower again. You're like, sorry, man road
running the show, not me. And he's a diabolical person.
But you talk about a guy like Derrick Henry what
he can do when you get him on the corners,
(59:17):
right like then he has to start an impact on
the past game too, because corners start to get worn
down because this is playoffs and you don't get to
pick and choose when you want to tackle anymore. You
have to bring him down. You have to bring him
down collectively as a defense, So you start wearing on
their secondary then all of a sudden, your past game
picks up. That's what Ryan Tannehill really wants. That's why
he's been doing so well. It's because of Derrick Henry
(59:38):
and the fact that this dude can look at somebody
and coming down the pipe and throw a perfect dark
It is amazing to think about. So you think that
because of Derrick Henry, this game will end up closer
than maybe people expect against the Ravens. Absolutely. I know
Earl Thomas is like, all listen, we're gonna bring him down.
But I watched Earl Thomas play the Browns this year
and I saw what nich Chubb did to them. Listen,
(01:00:00):
this is a bigger dude. You don't really understand what
you're getting involved with until you're in the middle of
the game. Now, I think that Lamar will absolutely have
a better chance to win because they're at home. He's
really comfortable right now. They know what they're doing. They're
kind of fine tuning this offense. But look for Derrick
Henry and Ryan Fannehill'll be like, listen, man, we've got
nothing to lose. We're gonna keep this game as close
as we can as long as we can. We're talking
(01:00:21):
to NFL veteran Alex Boot and so the other question
I have for you is the Ravens. Some of their
top players have not played a serious game for three weeks.
You know, they took off the final week of the season,
after they've already clinched the number one seed, They've got
the bye week for the wild card round, and now
they're coming back trying to be fresh. They're gonna be fresh,
(01:00:41):
but how much can that impact your timing if you
sit out from full speed for three weeks. I said
this two weeks ago. I've never seen this. I've never
seen a team wrestler starters for two weeks. It's just
because the timing is off that times you're right. And
not only that, but sometimes when the body hasn't really
been taken to the level of going live in a
long time, you get there, Number one, you're kind of rusty.
(01:01:02):
Number two, you're kind of like, hey, listen, it's been
a while. Maybe we should ooze into this, not just
kick started right away. So it's gonna be interesting to
see if they come up sputtering. I think everyone's gonna
be like, boy, that was a bad idea. Of taking
two weeks off. Yeah, I think that's gonna be a
big storyline depending on how they start off. All right,
let's go into Sunday's games. Uh, the early game on Sunday.
We've got, uh, what do we got going on? We
(01:01:24):
got the well, the late game. Let's start the late
game because I think that's the one that's most intriguing.
We've got the Packers going up against the Seahawks. Seahawks
on the road. You've got two Super Bowl winning quarterbacks.
What do you anticipate seeing in this one? It's the
one that the oddsmakers would tell us is the most even. Uh,
the Seahawks around a four and a half point favorite.
You know what, I like this game a lot. I
(01:01:45):
think it's gonna come down to what the quarterbacks do,
but not more importantly, if one guy on the defensive
side of the ball can show up and just disrupt
the quarterback a little bit, right like if Davey and
Clowne he really comes down says they listen, this is
my coming out party and I'm gonna show you how
this is done. I could see Russell Wilson going out
there with the d K met kep and having another
hundred fifty yard day. But then you gotta think, like
(01:02:06):
Mike Pennon, do she knows exactly how to attack this offense.
He knows exactly how to contain Russ, and Russ doesn't
have some really important guys up front. That to me
always is concerning, because if you can get to Russ
early and often do that's the entire game for them.
Right now? Are you concerned at all about the offensive
line and their ability to to block for Russell Wilson?
(01:02:27):
I mean, like the injuries there, they can't really they
don't really have much of a running game. I know
they got beast Mode back, but the injuries they had
at the running back position, it means that you don't
really necessarily have to respect the big play potential coming
out of their backfield, right No, that's for sure. I
mean I don't think you think Beast Mode is gonna
run for a ninety nine yard touchdown. But I think
that when you talk about the formula against Russ, a
(01:02:47):
lot of people have shown you how to do it.
You just have to contain him. You don't have to
go crazy after him. Don't be like listening guys in
your ears back enjoy the day. No, No, this is
more of a chess game. We're not playing checkers this week.
All right, We're gonna contain him in this pocket because
the minute he feels the closing and he can't get out,
that's when you see him get all like crazy and
like look around and what's going on? And then all
(01:03:09):
of a sudden, then you apply pressure even more. You're
down one of their best left tackles right now in
the league. I mean, if you can get pressure on Russ,
the game will be over. The forty Niners you played
for them, Uh, this is unique territory for them. Jimmy
Garoppolo has never started a playoff game before. They're the
overall number one seed. Vikings have a short week. I
(01:03:30):
want to start there. How much of a difference, if
at all. Do you think it makes that the Vikings
played on Sunday and now they have to turn around
and travel all the way across the country and play
on Saturday. Does that impact the way your body feels? No,
it does, But I think that when you're talking about
playoff football number one, your body like response so fast,
it's like being eighteen years old again. It's so fun,
(01:03:50):
Like you just somehow like wake up the next day
like I'm ready to go, guys, let's do this. But
you talk about a team that now has so much momentum,
so much momentum after beating a phenomenal Saints team, and
you look at the forty Niners and you're like, well,
you guys took a week off, so you've been sitting
in idol for a while. What team becomes more dangerous?
And especially because Mike Zimmer could still pull the Hey, listen,
(01:04:12):
people still don't respect this card. Look where we have
to go, Look what we have to do right now?
You start getting this team piste off and they have
a lot of fuel on the fire right now. So
you like the Vikings to keep this game close against
the forty Niners on the road. Absolutely, I think the
final score is gonna be seventeen thirteen. I think this
is gonna be a slug fest, dog fight, who can
get to the quarterbacks first, who makes the least amount
(01:04:33):
of mistakes? And I think more importantly, what coach can
pull their team out of a really tough situation, like
when something goes haywire. Who's gonna be the first one
to be like, listen, guys, We're fine, let's just get
that to the game plan. Once you do that, you're good.
So I'm curious on on this angle to Adam Feeling
somehow gets a cut, like a pretty severe cut on
(01:04:54):
his ankle and has to get stitches. I think the
assumption is he's gonna play. But you've been in these
actus is where you're trying to get ready for the playoffs.
How in the world do you get a severe injury
like that? When you saw this story and you hear
that a guy has to get stitches because it's something
that happened to him in practice during a playoff week,
are you as confused by how that happens as as
(01:05:16):
many of us are. The first thing I thought was
who's getting cut? There's somebody for sure, like like who
didn't see Feeling running the smoke route down the sideline
and gotten his way? Like of all the times, this
has to be Minnesota's luck, because you look back at
their playoffs starts and there's so many things that, I mean,
the Blair Walsh chick just kicked up all the way
to the left. I mean, dude, these guys have not
had worse luck, but now all of a sudden you
(01:05:37):
talk about, Hey, listen, we got Dalvin back after a
really bad injury. We're all hitting on all cylinders and
all the sides. Like, well, our star receiver somehow got
tripped up by some idiot and practice, Like, how does
that happen? You're you're with us though, right, I mean, like,
that's that's something that should never happen, especially during a
playoff week where you're probably trying to limit contact, uh
to find a way, and also with a guy who's
(01:05:59):
had a hamstring you all year, you would think you're
even trying to be even more careful than normal. Based
on that, I've never seen something like this, and especially
because one of the big things is you never hear
about guys really getting cut open like that, like having
to get stitches stuff like that, especially somewhere out of nowhere.
So you must have really gotten cleeted by somebody. And
I guarantee you that person right now is like, dude,
(01:06:19):
I may have crossed this the season. Yeah, it's absolutely wild.
So as you look with these eight teams that are
left right now, we're talking to Alex Boone, NFL veteran,
how would you break down who do you think are
the two best teams, who's the best from the a
f C, and who's the best from the NFC as
you project now, I think for sure in the a
f C, you have to give a lot of respect
to the Ravens. I think that what they do on
(01:06:40):
offense is exciting. I think a lot of people don't
know how to stop it. But the answer is really
kind of staring at everybody right in the face. I
think this. Everybody refuses to look at it, and they
think it's a lot harder than it is. But when
you turn around and look at their defense, what they
do by applying pressure, and how they can stop the
run with just their front four, and how they can
do things with the back, and this team is very dangerous.
And when you turn around and you look at what
(01:07:03):
the Niners have done all year, and a lot of
people have counted them out all year and been like,
what has Jimmy done. Jimmy's won games by himself and
he's proving it. And they've gone in and they've lost
some really tough games, just some really tough teams. But
I like what they do on offense, and I love
what George Kittle brings to this offense and I think
that if he has a day, it's gonna be dangerous
for people playing against them. What's the difference For people
(01:07:24):
out there who watch NFL football all year long, absolutely
love it, know that there's a difference when you get
into the postseason. How much more is the intensity ratcheted
up compared to a regular season game. We know already
every game matters in the NFL, But when you get
into the postseason, what's the difference in feel what's the
(01:07:44):
difference in intensity? Oh, it's you do You feel it too,
And as much as we try to blow it off, like, hey, listen,
it's just another game, you tell yourself that because you
don't want to make a mistake in the biggest moment
of your life. And you're like, you know what, it's
just another day, dude, don't get too excited. But you
feel the pressure on your back. You know that, Hey listen,
if this goes wrong, it's the end. And sometimes you're
looking around you're like, this maybe the last time this
(01:08:06):
team is ever together, and if we're gonna do this,
this is now our last chance. So it puts pressure
on you internally, and then you get there and sometimes
when you're the road team, You enjoy it because you're like, listen, man,
it's just us burn the boats, right, Like, we're gonna
do what we gotta do and then we'll do what
we gotta do to get the hell out of here.
But when you're the home team and you're a number
one seed, man, there's a lot of pressure because people
are like, are they gonna fault? Did they get there
(01:08:28):
on purpose? It was an accident? Was it was it luck?
What was it? This is real fun football? How long
does it take for you to calm down in a
playoff game and just be ready to play, like when
you're when for you personally, we're talking to Alex Boone,
NFL veteran, when you would go out onto the field
for a really really big game, how long did it
take so you got kind of your breath and you
(01:08:49):
got control of your emotions. Everybody's a little bit different,
but for you personally, what was it like in those
moments before kickoff and right after kickoff started? I mean,
once you got that first hit. And that's why I
always in joys starting the game with a run play
because it's kind of like me versus you, and I
think the defense almost enjoyed it too, like they would
have rather seen who was the toughest on the first play.
But once you get that first hit, it's like everybody
(01:09:10):
comes down to earth and we're like, Okay, here we
go again. But then all of a sudden, you're kind
of walking again on egg shows because you're like, man,
I remember getting to the line sometimes and we played
some tough games up in Seattle and you were like
you could not hear a word, nothing, and everything was
just jumbled around you, and you're constantly thinking, what I
thinking the right play? Am I going the right way?
Can anybody hear me? What are we doing? I mean,
(01:09:31):
it gets so intense at at times you're like, listen,
I almost want to tap out of this. Enjoy the
games by man this weekend. Fantastic hit. Appreciate, look forward
to talking to you again. Dude, can't wait. Thanks so much.
That is Alex Boone, NFL veteran, breaking down NFL playoff
games force. He's fired up, telling he's ready to line
up and take somebody out. Fox Sports Radio has the
(01:09:53):
best sports talk line up in the nation. Catch all
of our shows at Fox sports radio dot com and
within the I Heart Radio app search f S r
to listen live. I thought this was interesting. I've been
telling you that the NBA ratings are tanking down, NFL
surging into the turn the NFL, the NBA is collapsing.
(01:10:15):
Wednesday Night, the America's Top Dog on A and E,
Alaskan bush People on Discovery, The Real Housewives of New Jersey,
house Hunters, Homicide Hunter, and Property Bros Forever whatever that
is all crushed NBA games head to head on the ESPN.
(01:10:40):
I don't know, I'm not an expert on ratings, but
when you were losing to Alaskan bush People in America's
Top Dog, things ain't going great for the NBA and
the NBA people out there are waving their NBA flag.
They've really kind of shut up over the past couple
of years, and I think what's happened is the NBA
keeps having these body blows. I think a lot of
(01:11:01):
people out there listening to us uh saw that story
about you know, like, oh, did uh did John Bline
use the word thugs or the word slugs? And they
were like, Oh my god. Can NBA multimillionaires be more offended?
Can they be more perpetually outraged? And I think every
(01:11:23):
single day, the NBA loses Middle America more. I think
they missed David Stern honestly in a big way, primarily
because David Stern thought he was a really smart guy,
but he thought like an average dude. And I think
the NBA has become a league that bows down to
the East and West coast left wing media elite, and
(01:11:48):
as a result, they've lost the country. But when I
see these numbers, I'm one of the few people who
actually come out and share numbers like this with you,
because so many people out there are basically captured by
the league. If you work at ESPN or you work
at T n T, you're not gonna talk about awful
ratings because your league, your companies are spending so much
money on the NBA product. But when you're getting beat
(01:12:11):
like danj when you find out that the NBA gets
beat head to head by America's top dog in Alaskan Bush,
people that ain't good for the league. No, they better
hope for some really good playoffs. Even in the play
like the benefit they have in the playoffs is that
there's nothing else going on. I'm wondering a little bit
because the XFL, you know, it's going to kick off
the week after the college after the NFL ends, I
(01:12:34):
wonder a little bit how the XFL is gonna do
because they're gonna have ESPN and Fox behind them. And
I'm not the kind of guy who when football ends,
I want to watch more football. I kind of like
still like almost like when you were a kid. Remember
when you were a kid, if you played multiple sports,
you could be so excited for baseball season to start,
but by the end of baseball season, you're like, man,
(01:12:56):
you know what, I'm ready for football or I'm ready
for basketball when football is over. If you play multiple sports,
you kind of have that feeling. I feel like the
average American sports fan is kind of like that too.
I love football more than almost anybody else who even
does a sports talk radio show, right. I watch everything
in the NFL and in college football. But when football
(01:13:18):
comes to a close after the Super Bowl, like we
come in the Monday after the Super Bowl and Tuesday
after the Super Bowl and we unpack whatever happened at
that point in time, I'm ready to turn the page now.
I'm super excited. By the time it gets to be
like June and July and August, I'm ready for football
to be back, but I don't know that I'm gonna
be like, oh, the Super Bowls over now, I really
(01:13:40):
want to watch the XFL. Because the XFL is going
to start the next week this year, in February, it'll
be off and running. I kind of liked the A
A C or whatever that thing was called, the the
American Football A A F. I guess it was. I
kind of liked their time slot because they were starting
in the sum and I was like, Okay, I can
(01:14:02):
see being interested in watching this when it's not you know,
football season just ending. We'll see whether or not I
end up being right there. But I've questioned a little
bit the timing on the XFL about whether there's a
huge collection of people out there who are sports fans
that are gonna want to watch. But if there are,
that's gonna be another body blow to the NBA. You
(01:14:23):
usually do come around for the NBA, though, once you
get arrest after the NFL seasons over, well, I pay
attention to the NBA starting in April. I think the
NBA basically has like a two and a half month season.
When the playoffs actually start, I will I will be
interested in watching what happens, but from October to April,
(01:14:44):
I really don't care because it's all just the players
themselves don't care about the regular season, so I don't
care until we actually get to the postseason. And also
you got a factor, and I like the n c
Double A Tournament, so I you know, I really kind
of pay attention to college basketball all in the month
of February, right like, once the NFL ends, I'm like, Okay,
(01:15:05):
I'm gonna pay attention to college basketball. Now watch college
basketball for February, which is the end of the conference tournaments.
Uh in the end of the conference races into March Madness,
and then come April, I'll pay attention to the NBA.
I'm not opposed to it. I just think that the
NBA has taken major body blows here. We come back,
Divisional round, NFL playoffs are here. We're going all in
(01:15:26):
getting your ready for those four games to one Saturday
and two on Sunday. Appreciate all of you spending your
Friday with us. This is out kicked the coverage with
Clay Travis. But if you're just waking up, appreciate all
of you hanging out with us. Final hour of the
(01:15:46):
week final hour of the show before we officially jump
into the weekend with big games going on Saturday and Sunday,
as well as the college football national title game on Monday.
I'm flying down to New Orleans on Sunday, so I
will be doing the show Monday and Tuesday from New Orleans,
will be going to that game between Clemson and l
(01:16:09):
s U. Should be flat out phenomenal to see what
ends up happening taking place in that battle between the Tigers.
Big news out there in the event you're just waking up.
How about Mike Leach leaving Washington State to go to
Mississippi State. Uh, the SEC West now stacked unlike maybe
(01:16:30):
we've ever seen before any division in college football history.
Nick Saban greatest coach of most of our lives. Maybe
you're super young. Maybe there'll be a better coach in
your life then Nick Saban in college football. I doubt
there will be one in my life. Uh, you've got
an incredible success that he's had at Alabama. Then you've
got Jimbo Fisher who's making seven and a half million
(01:16:52):
dollars a year. Uh to go to Texas A and
m already has won a national championship prior to that
at Florida State. You've got at Oseron, who is going
to be coaching on Monday to win a national championship
at l s U and get his team to fifteen
and oh and put together one of the greatest seasons
if you were able to win it in the history
of the UH, in the history of college football. UH.
(01:17:15):
You also have Gus malls On who coached for a
national championship against Florida State out in the Rose Bowl
several years ago. Jamis Winston the late touchdown pass to
win the title for Florida State. There, you've got Lane Kiffin,
who has been in a lot of big battles over
the years. Now you've got Mike Leach, both in the
state of Mississippi, maybe the best rivalry in college football
(01:17:38):
from a purely entertainment perspective going on in Mississippi right now.
And then Arkansas has got Sam Pittman. Will see how
he does. But that is seven coaches that are pretty impressive.
Six in particular, UH, particularly when you contemplate that Mike
Leach managed to get Texas Tech to number one overall
(01:17:59):
his win record at what he did at Texas Tech
and what he did at Washington State off the charts
relative to what they were capable of before he was there.
He's now back in the SEC for people who don't
realize that he'd been there before. He was the offensive
coordinator at Kentucky under how Mummy back in the late nineties.
And also he spent a lot of time in Valdosta,
(01:18:21):
which is a football hotbed down near the border with Florida,
UH in South Georgia. So that is a big story
that's gonna be one worth following Mike Leach going to
officially be introduced to Mississippi State fans today UH down
in Starkville and or stark Vegas as it is often called.
(01:18:44):
That was a higher that Mississippi State had to make
to make up for all of the enthusiasm and excitement
that came from Lane Kiffen. We talked about how all
of this one day is going to be an incredible documentary,
all tied to the decision of old miss wide receiver
Elijah Moore to pretend to urinate on the football field,
(01:19:05):
which he did after a touchdown with four seconds ish
left in that game. It is pretty incredible to think
about all the fallout that has happened since then, both
Old Miss and Mississippi State have fired their coaches. They've
replaced Matt Luke and Joe moorehead with Lane Kiffin and
Mike Leach. I think they got substantially better both schools
(01:19:28):
did in the coaching department, but also just in terms
of sheer entertainment. It's gonna be almost impossible to beat
the SEC when it comes to the coaches that they
have put together at the top of their respective schools. Now,
so that is a story that blew up yesterday. We
spent a lot of time talking about it, UH, and
I'm sure willing can continue to talk about it. Will
(01:19:49):
also get both Mike Leach and Lane Kiffin on the
program at some point in the near future. If you're
curious about what Mike Leach is like, we have a
phenomenal long form interview we did with him. He spent
two and a half hours with us on the Wins
and Loss his podcast. I would encourage you guys to
to go listen to that, uh if you get a chance.
(01:20:11):
That was before this season started, UM, and you guys
are guaranteed UH to enjoy that conversation. Such an interesting
dude that you can go search out on iTunes just
type in Clay Travis or out kick and you'll see
the Wins and Losses podcast and you can scroll down
and listen to that one. By the way, new Wins
(01:20:32):
and Lost his podcast up this week. These are podcast
exclusives that we do in addition to the television show,
In addition to the radio show, in addition to the
Periscope and the Facebook shows and the writing and everything else,
we also do a podcast exclusive long form interview and
this week's guest is Eddie George, uh former Tennessee Titan
(01:20:53):
and Ohio State Buckeye Heisman Trophy winner. He is pretty outstanding.
W recorded that if people want a really entertaining you
gotta drive coming. Mike Leach obviously very good, but Eddie
George that went up this week is is pretty outstanding. Yeah,
Eddie George was phenomenals. He's a great storyteller too, and
he had some unbelievable stories that I had never heard
(01:21:15):
of because I know Eddie George as a football player,
but I really have no idea what his life was
like his out his background going growing up. I had
no idea he went to Fork Union Military academy as
kind of a scrawny kid looking to play football and
looking to get a good education, and his growth spurit
that he talked about and how he went about trying
to get the attention of college coaches was an unbelievable story.
(01:21:37):
So yeah, that's a must listen to if you're hitting
the road this weekend. Eddie George's mom thought that he
was showing signs that things could spiral out of control
in his life as he became a teenager. So she
put him in the car in Philadelphia and drove him
seven hours into rural Virginia and dropped him off at
this school of Fork Union Military Academy. He said, for
(01:22:00):
like a month, he cried himself to sleep every night
as he was laying in bed there questioning what his
mom was doing. He said in our conversation, it was
even more impressive to him now, the toughness that his
mom had to know that that was the right decision
for him, now that he had had kids of his own.
How hard that must have been for her to be
(01:22:20):
willing to put him into a military boarding school like that.
But when he finished at Fork Union, he didn't have
a single d one offer, and so he went for
a post grad year and suddenly started to blow up
in a really good way in that post grad year,
and that's how he ended up getting recruited at Ohio State. UM,
the stories are pretty phenomenal, So you need to listen
(01:22:42):
to that, UH if you in any way UH need
a fun, engaging, long form conversation. I'm telling you you'll
love these that we're doing with the Winds and lost
his podcast. So we are now obviously moving closer and
closer to Saturday and sun Day two games. On Saturday,
we start off out in the Bay Area with San
(01:23:04):
Francisco hosting the Vikings. Then we had all the way
across the country to Baltimore where the Ravens are going
to be hosting the Titans. Then we go up to
the frigid tundra of lambeau Field for the evening game
where they're having to move a lot of snow. I
guess right now, uh in Green Bay with the Packers
hosting the UH Seattle Seahawks, and then the other game
(01:23:27):
we're gonna be in Kansas City. We're going all over
the country kind of every different part of the region.
It feels like every different part of the country. Kansas
City is going to be hosting the Texans, So I
want to bring in the crew. Which game do you
feel most comfortable that you can predict exactly what is
going to happen? This is future look ahead. I'm gonna
(01:23:49):
bring in everybody. I want your most brilliant projection as
to what you think is going to happen in these
four games, the thing you feel most comble about. I'll start.
I feel most comfortable that the Titans are going to
cover and keep it close against the Ravens, and that
they will have the ball in the fourth quarter at
(01:24:12):
a minimum with a chance to win this game. I
think the three week layoff for the Ravens is going
to be impactful. The fact that mark Ingram is not
a pcent healthy I believe will make their offense not
play as well as they have before. I don't think
you can stop Derrick Henry. In the immortal words of
Dan Patrick, you can't stop him. You can only hope
to contain him. Ryan Tannehill I believe will play a
(01:24:35):
lot better. A J. Brown will show up. I think
this will be a really exciting UH game. I'm not
willing to predict that the Titans win because the Ravens
have just been so good. As Lance Taylor told us
an hour one, the Orioles have lost a game more recently.
The Baltimore Orioles have lost a game more recently than
(01:24:57):
the Baltimore Ravens have. But I feel like this is
going to be a three or four point game that
will be decided late in Baltimore. That's what I feel
most confident about of all of the games that are
going on. What do you feel most confident about, Danny
G I was fortunate in picking the Minnesota Vikings to
take the game outright last week, so I'm gonna roll
(01:25:20):
with the Vikings again. I like how they match up
with San Francisco. It's been a special year for the
forty Niners, as we've covered them all season long, but
these two teams match up almost mayor like with their defenses,
the excellent running games on both sides, and the fact
that Kirk Cousins and Jimmy g both have shown improved
(01:25:40):
something to us here recently. Which one of those two
quarterbacks is going to rise above the other. We're gonna
find out on Saturday. I'm comfortable in saying that I
do not think the Vikings are gonna lose by seven.
I think that's the line right now, right, that's right.
So no, if the Vikings lose, it would be by
a last second field goal. In my opinion, the Kings
are gonna cover all right. What are you most confident about,
(01:26:03):
dub in the games coming up this weekend? I absolutely
love the Chiefs this weekend there at home, and they
were lucky to get this by that. They're fortunate, fortunate
to have big thanks to the Miami Dolphins. Andy Reid
has an extra week to prepare. He's always good in
that spot. And these two teams played earlier in the
year in the Texans one, but this is a different
Chiefs team right now. They were really banged up earlier
(01:26:25):
in the season. In this Texas team, I just don't think.
I think that the worst team remaining in the playoffs.
They've gotten outscored this season overall, they've gave They've given
up more points than they've scored throughout the whole season.
And they got pretty lucky last week against Buffalo. And
this game also reminds me of Kansas City's Divisional round
matchup last season against the Colts. They went out in
(01:26:46):
narrowhead in one thirty one to thirteen. I think it's
something similar this weekend against the Texans. Texans are the
only team remaining in the playoffs who's been outscored this
season by their opponents. The Seahawks, I believe, I've only
outscored opponents by seven points, but they've played a lot
tougher opponents, I would say, in general. But I do
(01:27:06):
think that's a that's a factor. And typically the teams
that have been outscored by their opponents, by the time
they get to the round of eight, you know, the
divisional round of the playoffs, get exposed. So there is
some data to support what you are saying, which is
that the Texans could be in for a rough afternoon
against the Kan City Chiefs. Yeah. Those teams all time
(01:27:29):
are seven. That's what it is, right, Like from a
gambling perspective, and for people out there that might not
have picked that up. If you have been outscored by
your opponents all season long, you are ow is it
oh and seven against the number? Just oh and seven?
Straight up? That's just straight up. Yeah, they've never won.
That's that's that's a pretty great stat I mean, hasn't
happened a ton. But if you are in the final
(01:27:51):
eight of the NFL uh playoffs and you have been
outscored by your opponents during the regular season, you have
never won to advanced to the a f C or
NFC championship game. So if you're a money line player
out there, there you go. I know that the Chiefs
are nine and a half point favorite, so the money
line doesn't necessarily give you a spectacular return. But if
(01:28:12):
you don't want to worry about trying to play the
line and you're just like, hey, I'm just gonna pick
a winner, uh, that would suggest that the Chiefs are
gonna get it done against the Texans. What about you?
What are you most confident about as we head into
the weekend of big NFL games, four of them? Uh,
Eddie Garcia, I think I'm most confident that the Vikings
forty Niners game is going to be relatively low scoring
(01:28:35):
and close throughout. I agree with Danny. I could see
this coming down to a last second field goal, and
the forty Niners play a lot of close games recently.
Their final five games have been decided by five, three, seven, two,
and three points. So I think San Francisco pulls us
one out at home on the last second field goal.
What's interesting also about the forty niners is the first
(01:28:55):
twelve weeks of the season, their defense was unstoppable. Since
the twelfth, the week of the season, they've been one
of the worst defenses in the NFL. So is it
a health related issue with the bye week where they
ever able to get things back in working order, or
is that defense got some sprunks of major leagues? And
then I think the other challenging fact is about that game, uh,
(01:29:16):
the Vikings going up against the forty nine. What is
actually going on with Adam Feeling? I mean, you heard
us talking with Alex Boone in the last hour and
he's as confused as everybody else. Is How in the
world did Adam Feeling end up needing stitches at a
practice period? Right? Like but a practically if you believe
their story, right, what did they say? No, they're saying,
(01:29:39):
I mean, do you think this smells of something happening
off the field? Oh you think that like there was
some sort of like how else does a guy get stitches?
I've been trying to figure out how that's possible. I
I agree, So I'm not a conspiracy guy, but it
just smells vision. Yeah. Feeling told the NFL network that
he got tangled up with another player during practice. Yeah,
(01:30:00):
I understand that that's the argument. But how do you
get tangled up in practice and get stitches? Oh? I know,
I'm just telling you the story. Yeah, right, it's something.
Something weird is going on there. And I don't even
understand how you could put yourself in a position where
you could get injured in a short week. Remember that
they they played on Sunday, and they're playing again on
(01:30:21):
Saturday in the early game, and they have to travel
all the way across the country, right, Like, I don't understand.
First of all, I don't understand why the NFL did that.
Let me just take a step back. The NFL could
have easily said, because both a FC teams were playing
on Saturday, right, we had both a f C teams
in action on Saturday. I don't know why the NFL
(01:30:44):
didn't keep both a f C teams playing on Saturday
and both NFC teams playing on Sunday. I haven't spent
much time complaining about this because I don't know that
it's necessarily a massive story. But the if you look
at the way the wild Card was set up. You
had the early game was the Texans against the Bills,
and then you're late game on Saturday was the Titans
(01:31:06):
against the Patriots. All four of your a f C
teams played on Saturday, and then all four of your
NFC teams played on Sunday. Why wouldn't the NFL just
have set up the schedule so that both a f
C teams play on Saturday. In other words, instead of
wait until Sunday, you would have had Kansas City hosting Texans. Uh,
(01:31:28):
and then you still would have had the Titans playing
against the Ravens, so they have a full week to
get ready and then have a full week for both
of the NFC games as well. I don't understand. Plus
that then allows every team to have an equal amount
of rest for the a f C and the NFC
championship games, and nobody's getting a huge advantage because as is,
(01:31:51):
you know, the the team that wins, let's say it's
Kansas City or it's it's the Texans, they get an
extra day which could be significant, who knows in terms
of being able to recover, and they can start their
prep on who they're getting ready for faster, because whoever
wins the Ravens and the Texts and the Titans game,
they're gonna have to then get you know, get prepared
(01:32:13):
finish their game. And anyway, so sorry, I'm I flipped that.
I mean that the Titans and the Ravens in theory
would have extra time to get ready, uh, in advance
over the over whoever wins the Texans game. Regardless, My
point here is they should be playing these games on
the same day. I don't know why you would not
(01:32:34):
set this up, but it all just kind of ties
in with the vikings in this scenario. I question, like,
how do you bet on the vikings very comfortably if
you don't know what adam feeling status is going to be?
And again, does everybody find it incredibly strange that he
could need stitches based on what happened in the practice? Yeah,
(01:32:54):
that's impossible, man, I don't I don't believe. I'm not
buying that story. That's crazy. But I also don't know
what the other story would be. What somebody cut him,
like he got a knife fight in practice? Like not?
None of it makes sense. Well, we've seen I mean,
it's mostly in Major League Baseball, but There's been lots
of crazy, weird injuries that have happened to players off
the field, slipped in the shower and priced his foot
(01:33:16):
or something, and some of the players even lied to
their team about what happened, and then later we found
out the real truth. Yeah, so you think it could
be maybe Adam Feeland hurt himself outside of practice, something
embarrassing or something stupid at home. Yeah, maybe that's true too,
because I just don't understand you would think in a
short week, with especially a guy who's already had health issues,
(01:33:37):
why do you have him going very hard at all?
I would be doing basically walk throughs with my team,
you know, at this point, if Adam Feeland can't catch
or he can't run routes like you know, like either
can or he can, It's not like something he's gonna
do training wise is going to put him in better
condition otherwise. Plus the weather is awful, I would imagine
in Minnesota anyway. Are they practicing in a bubble? Would
(01:34:00):
be my guest. Yeah, so you're not even outdoors. It
just doesn't make any sense. I'm sure the story is
gonna come out sooner or later. Maybe at some point
Roberto what's your biggest takeaway? Uh, Like I said yesterday,
I think the Tians will will cover, and especially with
the two week layoff, the Ravens are gonna have three
weeks really yeah, sorry, three weeks. Uh. Then I think
(01:34:21):
the time's gonna continue to ride Derrick Henry. They're gonna
get the Ravens are gonna get punt in the mouth
early on, and I think I think the Ravens will win.
But doesn't take him a while to get going in
that game, maybe until until the fourth quarter. Maybe. Yeah, Dub,
you've got the stat on we were talking about earlier
teams that have been outscored on the season. Yeah, it's
this is since two thousand their oh and seven straight
up one and six against the numbers. So if you're looking,
(01:34:45):
if you're a trend person, that would be something you
maybe want to follow this weekend. Yeah for sure. All right,
we come back. My buddy chat with Row is gonna
join us. He's up in Baltimore getting ready for that
game between the Titans and the Ravens. We'll see what
he thinks of that when. Be sure to catch live
editions about kicked the Coverage with Clay Travis week days
at six am Eastern, three am Pacific, we head up
(01:35:06):
to Baltimore. Now, Chad w Row one of four or
five zone. My buddy is up there getting ready. Are
you staying for the game with Row? You flying back beforehand?
I am staying for the game this time. No need
to slide to Omaha from Baltimore this go around, so
I will be in Mt. T Bank Stadium, which I
can actually pretty much see my hotel room right now
(01:35:26):
for Saturday night's game. Is there a sort of palpable
at all sense that there's a big game going on
there Saturday? Or is it still kind of still kind
of quiet? It's early. We got in late last night,
so it didn't really get a chance to get a
sense of the city yet. We uh, we're gonna do
our show for back in Nashville, uh today at at
(01:35:46):
Tin Roof up here in Baltimore, so we'll know a
lot better than I will say this though. Clay just
talking with the Titans and talking to some fans. There's
a lot more fans making the shorter flight up to
Baltimore for this game. A lot of them are coming
in Saturday morning for the game. But I think that
you know, the Titans are gonna have a big fan
rally up here. I would not be surprised to see
(01:36:07):
a lot of Titans fans that make the trip um
and a week ago in New England, it was amazing
for a team in a region that that's so much
success the Patriots. Pretty Much everyone we talked to that
either covers that team or was a fan of that
team was almost certain the Patriots would lose to the
title in that game. They had no they had they
had no confidence going into it. I think that's the
(01:36:29):
opposite with this Baltimore team and what they've done this year,
and and rightfully so, that they're the best team in
the NFL. Is We were talking earlier on the show
about the fact that Derrick Henry had over twelve thousand
rushing yards in high school, and everybody out there who
is listening to us right now that watched him at
Alabama saw that level of dominance with him as well.
(01:36:51):
But do you get the sense that the Titans maybe
are surprised, even though they drafted him in the second
round that he's kind of starting to do in the
NFL the exact same thing that he did at Alabama.
And it's funny because all the Alabama fans out there
were always upset that the Titans weren't using Derrick Henry enough,
and now it kind of feels like, you know what
(01:37:11):
they were right, Yeah, it was. Well, I think it's
twofold though, Quay. I do think that, you know, they
weren't using him correctly, but I also think that Derrick
Henry wasn't utilizing the offense correctly. John Glennon and Joe
rex Road for the Athletic that covered the team here
in Nashville, UM, they had a great piece up this
(01:37:32):
week about the transformation of Derrick Henry. You know a
year ago. You go back to this game last year
against Baltimore where Clarkas Marioti got sacked eleven times and
the Titans got blown out at home by Joe Flacco
and Lamar Jackson just played a few staffs in that game.
Then that game against the Patriots where Derrick Henry in
the second half kind of had his coming out party
(01:37:53):
and started the great second half of that season. In
that game, David flew Lellen was getting more carries early
in that game that day, Henry. That's how out the
Titans they were. They were trying to trade him. Was
the reports before last season like that they just basically
had decided you, he doesn't fit. They were using Dion
Lewis more. Uh, they didn't have any faith them at all.
(01:38:13):
They didn't have any faith in them all. And and
that that piece of the athletic does a good job
play of showing. Uh, talking to his running back coach,
talking to a lot of different people that because of
his athletic ability, he was always he grew accustomed Alabama
in high school, of course, to always look at for
the cutback lane and not just taking what's in front
of him. And I got him in trouble, remember all
(01:38:34):
the like two and three yard losses early in his career. Uh,
he got away from that because he started seeing what
was there. He started understanding the offense more, understanding when
the when to take the cutback lane and when to
just go. And I think a conversation he had with
Eddie George I had a lot to do with that,
you know. Eddie George said, you need to run like
you and I a buddy of yours too, But Eddie said, look,
(01:38:56):
you're you need to run like your career to penn
hunt it because it does, and you need to take
what's there. And once he started doing that, he became
more of a wrecking ball for this offense. He's always
had the big place breath, he's always one of the
fastest guys on the field, but now that he's running
with such power and he's getting the whole so much quicker.
I mean, he's one of the best offensive weapons in
(01:39:18):
the league. There's there's no doubt about it. And it
was It's crazy to think back just a year ago
mid season where Derrick Henry was, he was being shopped,
David Luellen and Dion Lewis were getting more carries, and
now he's one of the best weapons in the NFL. Yeah,
and I think you're right. What it really kind of
boils down to is he's learned that getting two or
(01:39:38):
three yards is a good play and uh and and
I think that maybe that was different from what all
the success that he had at at at college and
certainly in high school. It's you know, I'm never gonna
just be a two or three yard runner. And what
he's I think found out is if you stack some
of those two and three yard runs, it gives you
the opportunity to bang the big one every now and then,
(01:39:59):
uh and uh. And it keeps the team from having
to be constantly in second and third and long because
you're losing yardage on plays. He almost never loses yards
on runs. Now, all right, so what do you expect?
The line is up to ten. You're in Baltimore getting
ready for this game nine and a half. The Ravens
are a big favorite. Is it a close game? I
(01:40:20):
think it is a close game. I do not think
the Titans win, but I think that the rust factor,
you know, the three and the starters. Yeah, resting the
three weeks off, I do think the Titans will will
be in this game in the second half, and I
think they're in the game in the fullth quarter. In fact,
I think the time is gonna come out of play
well now. For the Titans to win up here in Baltimore,
(01:40:40):
they're gonna have to play possibly their best game of
the year to pull that off. And it is possible.
But I think Baltimore is just they're just so difficult
to stop and and no one's really done it this
year because of the way they run that offense. Because
Lamar Jackson's ability to not just get yardage with his leg,
but to break the game open with his I think
(01:41:01):
the Ravens win. I think the Titans cover. Here's an
interesting subplot as well. I don't I can't imagine this
has ever happened in an NFL game before. They're gonna
be five guys who won the Heisman Trophy in uniform.
You've got mark Ingram r G three and Lamar Jackson
for the Ravens, Marcus Mariota and Derrick Henry for the Titans.
(01:41:23):
I can't imagine there's ever been a game played anywhere
where there's been five Heisman Trophy winners all on the
field at the same time. That's a little bit of
a subplot there, all right. What about the other games? Uh,
you got the Vikings on the road against the forty Niners.
They are around a seven point underdog. You've got the
Texans on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs. They
(01:41:43):
are around a ten point underdog. Nine and a half
or ten there as well. And then the game up
in Lambeau with Russell Wilson going up against Aaron Rodgers
with the Seahawks around a four and a half point underdog.
Those are according to Fox Bet, which I'm looking at
right now, who's the most like Glee to pull the
upset off of those three teams that I just ran
through it, I think I would probably pick Houston. The
(01:42:08):
weather factor in that game, I know there's a possibility
for snow. It's it's a bad weather throws me off
a little bit. But is it too easy just to
pick all the home teams, Like all the home teams
are substantial favorites. Yeah, I think this is a home
team weekly lot. Last week was a visiting team week.
I think this is the home team week. I'm I'm
(01:42:28):
taking the home teams and all these if I had
to pick one, but I could see going in and winning.
I think it's Houston, you know, in the Kansas City.
But I like the home teams in the other game.
All right, what about Mike Leach to Mississippi State. How
big of a deal is this? It's amazing think about
the coaching roster in the SEC West. I mean, not
that it wasn't already great, but you add in the
(01:42:48):
state of Mississippi, Lane Kissing and Mike Leach. Um, I
think this has epic potential for Mississippi State doesn't have
winning the SEC West potential I don't think so, But
are gonna be so relevant now in such a test
for teams because they're gonna be so different from the
other teams in that in that division, and of course
(01:43:08):
Mike Leach's personality is gonna left itself to a lot.
I mean thinking about that Egg Bowl matchup now with
those two personalities, budding heads and recruiting in that state
and everything else is gonna go on. I think it's
a terrific higher from Mississippi State. And you think the
other finalists were Todd Grantham and Steve Sarkisian. Yeah, that's
how that those are two of the finalists. I mean,
(01:43:29):
think of that decision like you're down to Steve Sarkasian,
Todd Grantham, and Mike Leach. Just how different those guys
are and what what a different direction for your program
that is. I think it's a terrific higher by Mississippi State.
I think that Mike Leech thrives in places like Starkville, Mississippi,
in Pullman, Washington, and Lubbock, Texas, these sort of football outposts,
(01:43:50):
and I think he's gonna do a great job for State.
And I think him versus Lane Kissing is gonna be
a great seed or every single season. Yeah, there's no doubt.
And also it's a great laboratory tests because for so
long people have said, Okay, how would Mike Leach do?
And I know it's not fair because he's still going
to Mississippi State, which is, you know, sort of the
(01:44:10):
runt of the SEC West. Let's be honest, Um, when
you look at all those other programs, they aren't on
an equal footing in terms of their ability to compete.
But Mike Leach has never been on an equal footing
at Texas Tech or at Washington State either, and he's
had historic success at those programs. So how will Leach
his abilities and coaching style and everything else that he
(01:44:33):
brings to bear apply in the SEC. We've had a
little bit of a test case when he was the
offensive coordinator with Kentucky when they were walking around in
those air raid helmets back in the day, like with
Tim Couch, which was a fun and entertaining style of
football that they brought to bear there. But how will
he do actually running his own program? That's gonna be
(01:44:54):
fun to watch. I think he's gonna do a great
job there. You know, a year ago played two years ago.
Excuse me, the with John Curry was courting him to
go to Tennessee. There was a lot of speculations I
could he handle Knoxville. Now there's a lot more media
members that cover the University of Tennessee, and Knoxville is
a much bigger place than Starkville. So I can understand
(01:45:14):
the question about how a personality like that would mesh
with that big of a job. And I'm not downplaying
Mississippi State is a job. It's it's in the SEC.
But Starkville is a different place than Knoxville, and the
media attention is far different than for Tennessee. So, just
like we were talking about, I think that his outpost
style for college football will work in Starkville. And what
(01:45:35):
if he need to succeed. He needs some decent receivers
and he needs a quarterback who can run his system.
You can find that in Mississippi. You can find that
in the South. Now on you can also find in
Mississippi State is a great defense. They've shown that over
the years. If he can bring in or hire the
right desensive coordinator, and he can have guys in the
staff that can recruit and develop if they just have
(01:45:56):
a decent defense. They're gonna have a shot to win
some big games in the SEC West because of Mike
Leach's offense. If he's able to bring in that quarterback
that he needs, and there's plenty of skill players in
the South that he can pick from. Yeah, I don't
think there's any doubt that the overall quality of player
he has will increase. I think the question is will
it increase enough to increase alongside of how much better
(01:46:18):
the quality of play will be in the SEC compared
to the Pack twelve in the Big Twelve. All right, Uh,
we've got the national title game going on down in
New Orleans on Monday between Clemson and l s U.
What do you think is is likely to happen in
that game? Which side would you take? I mean, I'm
taking L s U. But I mean this is a
(01:46:41):
mammoth matchup that it's uh, it's really hard to pick
one way or the other. I mean, what is the
advantage of Dabo being in this game? Before? You know,
if you're if you're looking for we can talk about
all the matchups and everything else, but what is the
actual tangible value of a guy who's been there, done
that and played very well in this game versus a
(01:47:03):
coach and a coaching staff that's preparing for this type
of what two and a half week layoff or whatever
for the first time. UM that that's something I want
to watch early in this game. I think L s
US the better team. They've been the better team all years.
Why they were the number one team in the country.
But it's tough to pick against Dabo and Clemson in
(01:47:23):
this game, and tough to pick against Trevor Lawrence and
those guys after what we saw a year ago against
Alabama this game, so it's tough to pick. I'm leaving
l s U right now play, but I am curious
to see what type of factor that is with Clemson
and that country staff having done this numerous times. Now.
You know what's wild is if Joe Burrow wins and
(01:47:45):
l s U gets to fifteen and oh, I think
it's probably the greatest single season in college football history.
If Trevor Lawrence wins and his gets his second national championship,
he's still undefeated, Clemson wins their thirty game in a row,
then we're talking about Trevor Lawrence coming back for year three,
trying to win a third straight title before he goes
number one overall, which would be the greatest single season
(01:48:07):
potentially in college football history. Good stuff has always chadwithor
appreciate you join us Yeah and play by the way
pots of the greatest single quarterback career in history with
Trevor Lawrence. We're looking at Yeah in this next game
in the year two. So thanks for having me. Fox

including the legendary, famous, well known talk of the town,
most celebrated. I'd buy that for a blood Bank guarantee,
all right. In the wild card round we went four
and two pretty solid. Also had a push on the
Texans game. Uh four two and one. If you want
(01:49:11):
to count that. I gave you out seven picks to
get you ready for the wild card round. I got
a bunch for you here as we roll into the
divisional round the playoffs, and I'll start with the order
in which the games are being played. I like the Vikings.
I know we talked about how mysterious it is that
suddenly Adam Feeling's got a stitches in his foot. It
doesn't make me happy, uh, because I was starting to
(01:49:32):
think this offense was rounding perfectly into form. Liked what
I saw from Dalvin Cook. I like the Vikings plus
the seven points. I also like the over in this game.
I feel like there's gonna be a couple of big
plays over unders down to forty four. I like the Vikings,
and I like the over Titans Ravens. I like the
(01:49:53):
Titans plus the nine and a half. That's too many points.
I believe Ravens coming off a three week Uh wait,
rest if you want to call it that. The Titans
rounding into shape with Derrick Henry, I feel like they
will lean on the Ravens make this a game into
the fourth quarter. I like the Titans plus nine and
(01:50:14):
a half man the Texans and the Chiefs. This game
now has ticked down a little bit to eight and
a half. I think I'm gonna have to take the Texans.
I also like the over in this one. I don't
think the Texans can stop the Chief's offense. But I'm
also not sold on the idea that the Chiefs are
just gonna wipe out the Texans. So notwithstanding that that
(01:50:35):
number that we gave you, which is that, what if
you've been outscored all season long, you are oh in
seven in the divisional round of the playoffs, one and
six against the number, I'm gonna go against that a
little bit and take the Texans. I love the Chiefs
to win, uh So if you're playing a money line
parlay or something like that, I think there's good value
(01:50:56):
on the Chiefs to win out right. And then finally
in the Seahawks on the road against Green Bay. I
like the Seahawks. I'm not sold on green Bay three
and two against playoff teams. They've been erratic throughout. I
like the Seahawks against the Packers. I like the over
in that game, too, So I gave you a bunch.
Let me run through them one more time quickly. I
(01:51:17):
like the Vikings to cover against the forty Niners. I
like the over to hit there. I like the Titans
to cover against the Ravens to be close down the stretch.
Ravens win a close game. I like the Texans to
cover UH and the over to hit, and I like
the Seahawks to cover and the over to hit as well.
I think you're a f C and NFC Championship games
(01:51:40):
will be the Ravens against the Chiefs and the forty
Niners against the Seahawks. So I think we'll get a
third matchup between the Seahawks and the forty Niners. The
Seahawks are the only road team that I am predicting
to win, and if that happens, we'll get a third
NFC West mat match up between the forty Niners and
(01:52:02):
the Seahawks. A lot to be determined in UH in
that matchup, considering those two teams have basically played even
games through hundred and twenty minutes plus a football action.
The first game went to overtime, second one came down
to about what six inches whether or not there was
a touchdown or not, that would have won the Seahawks
(01:52:22):
the division. So I think it's gonna be forty nine
or Seahawks out in San Francisco, and I believe it
will be Baltimore Kansas City in Baltimore. Mike leached Mississippi State.
