Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the best of the Doug gottlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio Boo, What Up America? Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, Live and direct from the City of Angels,
where the Battle of l A has already been one.
We're calling it early. It's like a presidential election, right,
We're calling this state for so much stuff to get to. Uh. Look,
(00:24):
the adage in the NFL is very very simple. You
don't know what you have? Do you reach October one? Right? Um?
And I believe that tomorrow tomorrow. I have no idea
that today that's today, No yesterday, really like there's certain
days you just don't. I have no idea. Just trying
(00:46):
to be honest with you. I know the thirty one
of October Halloween, right, I know the December. I know
my own birthday, to my kid's birthdays. I know a
couple of my friend's birthdays. Outside of that four the
July when the line never changes, sink, goody, good holiday,
good holiday. Um. But the first of October is generally
(01:10):
the demarcation of we know what we have because trends
have been built. We'll get to that one second first, Like, look, uh,
I like most of you maybe all of you woke
up to the news of what happened Las Vegas, and
it's terrible and it's scary and it's awful. And I
could go on a tangential rant about how our government
(01:34):
didn't do anything after Newtown, and if we're not gonna
do anything after Newtown, why don't we do anything after
Las Vegas. But that's not this is not that's not
what you come here for. So it's not out of
a lack of respect, it's out of an understanding that
we all have some sort of reason why hopefully you
came to listen to me um Ryan music and I
(01:55):
were in that exact same area just a couple of
weeks ago. That was the site of the media center
for Mayweather McGregor, same exact location, so we were there
Saturday night. I actually went to there's a new country
band Midland, We get the number one album in America.
(02:16):
Actually went to this small little concert right on the beach.
And so I don't know whether it's just I'm a
human being, or we were just in Vegas, or the
fact that I was just at a country concert. My
wife when she heard the news, I mean, she's completely distraught, rightfulice,
So as I know many of you are when you
start to think about like you can't go to a
concert anymore. But like, look, that's why sports exist, because
(02:42):
not the real world. It's not. And so while it's
okay for you to freak out over the Patriots Super
Bowl possibilities because their defense is a sieve in the
real world, it pales in comparison and importance to all
the other stuff going on. Right, So don't think I'm
(03:04):
not thinking about it, don't think we're not watching it,
following it, all the news stories, etcetera. Well, let's talk
about sports for three hours. Doug out the show Fox
Sports Radio Trends building right, Like, look, I don't know.
I mean, my my eyes were burning because I went back.
I DVR as many of the games as I can.
I went back late and I was like, you know,
(03:25):
I hadn't pay attention to the Jets Jacksonville game, and
I was like, oh, this one's really hard to watch.
Blaw Paul is awesome, a hundred sixty three yards rushing,
and um I I struggle with the you are what
your record says you are when the Jets are two
and two and I know they're not as good as
the Giants that I know, they're not as good as
(03:46):
the Chargers. And yet here they are two and two
and the Giants and the Charges are both oh and four.
So you can go with that you are what your
record says you are. I don't believe that always to
be the case. On the other hand, we got enough
trends to tell you that the Patriots defense is no good,
so too is the Ravens offense. Can you imagine a
(04:07):
game where the Ravens took on the Patriots and that
defense against that offense, that's the resistible force against the
movable object. Right, the Ravens offense is the resistible force
and the Patriots defense of the movable object. But I
also think it's fair to say there are other trends like, look,
I'm not gonna fall in love with um Deshaun Watson.
(04:31):
I know they put up forty fifty seven points. His
tie sticks about fifty seven points, and everybody's going crazy.
Ryan Music, who is the defensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans,
dick Lebo, dick Lebo, dick Lebo. John Ramos came from
where Pittsburgh Steelers, right, Pittsburgh Steelers. Do you remember the
(04:52):
game that ended Dick Lebo's career in Pittsburgh. That would
be when and Tim Tebow was quarterback, running quarterback against
the Pittsburgh Steelers defense. Right, they won on a eight
yard to Marius Thomas catching run. The point is we've
(05:13):
seen like it's his defense style. He may be a
Hall of Famer, but like Monty Kiffins failing to evolve
in college football, he tried to use the Tampa two
against the spread offenses and it didn't work. Dick Lebo
has never been able to figure out these running athletic quarterbacks, who,
by the way, when they first come into the league
(05:35):
before everybody has a book on them, it works great
and eventually they keep them all in the pocket. They
forced him to throws that they don't want to make,
and that's where we find out who is and who
is not in it for the long haul. Vince Young
started out quite well. Uh, Johnny Manzel had moments of greatness. Realia,
we all want Deshaun Watson to be the quarterback that
(05:56):
the quarterback whisper Bill O'Brien can find. But to say
that this early into it, we know what we have
just pump the brakes a bit. It's a Dick Globo defense.
And he made a lot of plays with his feet,
and they moved him around smartly. And as people get
a book, they do in fact adjust to you that happens.
(06:17):
And the defense that he lit up last week was
the Patriots the same defense Cam Newton lit up this week.
The correlation is always, I mean Alex Smith first week
and seeing like, wow, Alex Smith is awesome, or maybe
that Patriots defense they were to damn and they're holding
on that luxury item. Jimmy Garoppolo right, Uh, it doesn't
(06:40):
appear they need him to be the quarterback anytime soon.
Wasn't a problem with Tom Brady. Tom Brady was spraying
the ball all around. They came from fourteen down, tied
it up in the fourth quarter. Problems at defense, even
without Julian Edelman. The offense gave them enough. The defense
just did die. And what about the difference in Jared
(07:03):
Golf and the l A Rams. They go into Dallas,
they use Legatron. Greg's urline kicks seven field goals seven
seven seven seven field goals, But more than anything, they
use a running back to beat him in the passing game,
(07:23):
the running game, keep the Cowboys off the football field.
And they just continued. After the first drive of the
second half they had to punt. They just continue to
get points, get points, get points, get points. So look,
I think a lot of that we learned that we've
learned a lot about these teams in a short period
of time, a lot a lot about these teams. We
(07:48):
learned the Patriots have major defensive issues, communications issues in
their defensive backfield. We learned the Ravens have huge issues
on the offensive side of the ball. And I do
think we have enough of a pattern here. And I'll
grant you part of the you are what your schedule
(08:10):
says you are is the Rams? Do I think the
Rams are better right now than they were last year,
and better coached, absolutely, And golf has matured and he
has better weaponry. All that stuff works. But remember so
much of sports is about confidence and unlike other teams
having to go out on the road and playing legit
playoff caliber teams. They opened with the Colts with a
(08:32):
backup quarterback at home. They They then had the Washington Redskins,
whom their coach had coached the last year, a game
they probably should have won at a home Then they
went and took on the San Francisco for the Niners,
who I think Shanahan's doing a nice job, but they're
not a good team, and so they hadn't had their
confidence killed by their first three games going into Dallas.
Dallas had a short read to prepare, they had a
(08:53):
long to prepare, and they kind of got to let
it all hang out play. They had the one thing
that has given Dallas trouble in the past, which is
a solid running game to keep that offense off the
football field, so that dallas Is running game can't keep
you out the football game. We got patterns building in
the NFL. Other pattern is se Antonio Brown get pisted
(09:17):
on the sideline. He was wide open. Ben Roethlisberger missed
him and he only had three catches yesterday. At at
at any point, well, D'Angelo Williams is going to join
us next admit that the Steelers offense is still missing
something like ah, they'll get it together eventually. But man,
(09:38):
speaking of missing something, how do you fix the Ravens offense? Kenya?
Uh fair to point out the win of the day
was the Bills over the Falcons. Should be pointed out
Mohammed sannew Julio Jones not playing in the second half.
So uh so, I mean you basically beat the Falcons
(09:58):
and Falcons had both arms tied behind their backs. Like
I know, I heard Colin talk about how, oh, Kyle
she hanahan leave Kyle Shandon leaving hurts their play calling.
You know what else hurts your play calling? When Julio
Jones isn't playing, That really hurts your play calling. Oh
and then you took away Mohammed Sanu as well, that
hurts your play calling. Funny, They're running backs are still good.
That yeah, because the running backs weren't healthy, their wide
(10:19):
receivers were not. And I would love to sit here
and say that was It's any wins a good win.
But Detroit gave Minnesota as many opportunities as as they
could to win that game. And of course the Vikings
lost Dalvin Cook and she the Vikings trade for Adrian Peterson,
(10:40):
bring him back. Saints gotta win. Saints are two and two.
Saints aren't the disaster we thought they were. That's actually
reserved for the Dolphins. I'll take you talk about trends building.
Dolphins should have lost the Chargers Dolphins should be oh
and three. I know they haven't played a home game.
They're not a good football team. But while the Saints
two wins are good stories, the real story there is
(11:01):
Adrian Peterson's their third best back and their third best
fit for their offense. And now the Vikings with Dalvin
Cook out for the year, you need a starting running back.
Be sure to catch live editions of the Doug gott
Leaps Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app. Mitchell
Trobisky is gonna get to start for the Bears. And look,
this makes all the sense in the world because Mike
(11:24):
Glennon has stunk. They played on Thursday night, they don't
play till Monday night. It gives your rookie your best
possible opportunity. And they're playing at home too, right, so
it's given him plenty of time to prepare. It was
the obvious decision. And as much as Mike Glennan probably
didn't get a fair shake, he got about as fair
(11:45):
and unfair shake as you're gonna get. And you're like, oh,
he stinks. I'm not disputing the fact that he stinks.
But when you sign a guy and he goes to
the draft party, a draft party which he did not
know they were going to trade up and draft his
immediate successor, Like, you're not really saying to the guy, hey,
(12:06):
you are a long term solution at quarterback, you know.
M uh so? I mean that's that's one of those
deals to where you're like, you start dating a girl,
you start thinking about making plans. She doesn't want to
leave it leave a toothbrush at your apartment, right, Like,
(12:27):
now I don't really want to leave a toothbrush your apartment. Well,
you know, he should make some plans for this is
actually this is kind of what Ryan ran into last week.
You want to share Ryan with Ryan? Step didn't last week?
Did you hear this? Ramos? I did not hear this.
You probably shouldn't shared it with me, but he did,
and now I'm gonna share it with the world. So
Ramos went Rama's Ryan went on. Remember he left us,
(12:48):
He went to Hawaii? He did, and he was like, oh,
what an incredible trip, Like, who would you go with
you with my girlfriend? He stayed this awesome place like
in Maui. We're talking about places. He's like, wow, that
place is amazing, the trip was amazing, our relationship is amazing.
Like all these things were like check check check check
check was like cool. So his girlfriend like, it's like
last week. She's like, hey, now he was awesome. We
(13:11):
should do it again next year. We should like get
it on the books next year. So let's just say,
rama's you were dating your wife now girlfriend, and she
saysn't eve been dating for like a year? And she says, hey,
what do you think about MAUI next year getting on
the books? Would you what what do you say? Uh? Well,
(13:33):
for my personal I would say sure, because I would
know at that point that we were probably headed in
the right direction. Well not just that, but like you
can't give anybody any reason to not think you're headed
in the right now. In in Ryan's personal case, like
in his particular case, he had some logic behind hesitance
(13:55):
on His family wants to do it, get together. His
family wants to go fly galivant around the world. You know,
he comes from a lot of money. The only way
he can do this job. So so he wants to, uh,
he wants he wants to they want to go somewhere else.
He's like, look, you know I don't know. Uh, had
a great time, but I want to keep my options open. Wow.
(14:17):
And so I immediately said, like, what are you doing?
You idiots? Yeah you did? You You called that out
right away, right because as soon as I told you
that story, you were like, wrong answer, wrong answer, No
further explanation needed, you just wrong answer. This is this
is somebody saying like, hey, I have I have Lakers
playoff tickets third Row Center, Okay, and it's on you know,
(14:44):
June three, June third, your girlfriend's birthday. And you're like,
and I can only take you do you want to go?
And right now you're like, man, I'm with my girlfriend
and I don't even know if the I don't even
know if the Lakers gonna make the playoffs. You say yes,
because you can always cancel lay Eater always. I'm first
of all, I'm late cancel guy just yet. People think
(15:05):
I'm doing something with him tonight. I'm not. Never the
big things. I'm doing them tomorrow. Like we just we
can't can't do it. I'm sick. Yeah, that's one one.
That's the only reason I had kids, because when I
don't want to do something, I just go. It's that
kid ge't do it. Um so music made the music.
Have you dug yourself out of that hole that you
dug and figned into? Yeah? Absolutely? Have you decided I
(15:26):
would do I? Honey, I do want to go to Maui.
I want to go with Maudi. I want to go
with you. You're the only person I want to go
to Maui with. Put it in. Put it in. That's it.
I got it tattooed on my chest. Maui. These dates
here we come right. This is the the The Bears
drafting mid trading up and drafting Mitchell Trabinsky was them
(15:48):
telling Mike Glenn and Hey, we're going to Hawaii next year,
but we're not bringing you. We're not bringing you, which
makes it really really hard to keep going on dates
with with this girl with the Bears. Fox Sports Radio

and within the I Heart Radio app. D'Angelo Williams was
an iconic member of the Carolina Panthers organization. He was
the all time leading rusher in the history of the Panthers.
That record was a race yesterday, so he's just second best.
And he joins us, Hey, we're like the second best
show in Fox Sports Radio. Anyway, You okay with your
record going down to Jonathan Stewart, I have I felt
(16:30):
like you there was your opportunity to take a shot
at me. Man, God leave, Yeah it was. It's good
to delude it to him. Uh. You know, the record
stood for not even a year, or maybe a year,
I'm not quite sure, but I knew he was closing
in owner that he'd eventually get it. I just didn't
know how fool he would get it, because you know,
(16:51):
they don't really value running back and Caroline Walton like
they uston. It's more of h It's more of a quarterback,
running back, wire receiver. Do all there. I want to
get to the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of your other former teams,
in a second. But I know you watch those Carolina
Panthers games with great intensity. How fixable are these issues
with the with the Patriots? Because yes, Cam looked good,
(17:12):
There's no I cannot dispute the factor. Kim looked as
good as he's looked all season. But every quarterback has
looked good against that defense. How fixable are those issues?
I was fixable, but I'm gonna point the finger at
one Bill Belichick. Bill Belichick believes in his system that
(17:32):
his defensive coordinator put in, so he went out. Not
only did he go out and get stars to put
the plug into that defense, he started to realize now
that it's hard to plug stars in the defense and
accidn't to stay well within the defense that you run
and not be the stars that they were before you
plugged him into the systematic defense. That's what's causing them
(17:56):
issue their stars that are tweets that are Peter and
whether I should play the system or should I trust
me as the star athlete that I am. So until
they buy any the one or the other, either the
defensive coordinates to, hey, I'm gonna let you guys be stars,
or the defense coordinate said, hey, this is my system,
damn it. Believe in it and trust in it. To
(18:17):
some stars that have always believed in themselves. Before it
was no name guys that believed in the system because
they they didn't know what it feel like to be stars.
Now you have one ship, Malcolm Butler. He gets to
pick against Cam on the ball that Cam through that
to receiver that wasn't even his receiving he just sell
out that guy and played football and he's been a
(18:37):
star that he has been since he since the Seattle
Sears game, so he's been at the star. And then
you bring over step Fard Gilmore from the Buffalo Bills,
who was the star there. So you asking two star players.
Not only just those two star players, but there's other
guys that have taken on the role of these two
guys in terms of, hey, I want to be that star.
So they're taking more opportunities and more more rich plays
(19:01):
than they have been just believing in the system. And
I blamed it on Bill Belichick because you need time.
Not only do you need time, but you need these guys.
You need time in order to make these stars believe
in the system that you have put them in. Like
you could say, hey, look at these guys before you
you know, blah blah blah blah blah and point out guys,
but they don't know that those a system guys. They
(19:22):
just know that they're stars. So it's it's it's all
Bill Pellichick. In that defenses they're trying to run because
that offense hadn't stopped, had missed the beach. They put
up thirty plus they put up thirty point. Yeah, it's
not the offense. The offense is going, it's that defense.
And I can't put it up the defensive coordinator because
the defensive coordinator is not the one ultimately pulling these
(19:43):
triggers to get these players over here. On defense, it's Billeck.
I'm almost sure he could drols everything in New England.
Deenzel Williams joined us in the Doug Otlum Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, um, let me ask you.
The Raiders are a team that was supposed to not
have a great defense but have an incredible offense. We
saw the Redskins take them apart. It's I guess more
reasonable that the Broncos with that defense taken apart. And
(20:05):
I know that Derek Carr got hurt, but what do
you see when you see the Raiders offense and why
they had a lot of drops as well, But you
got tight End dropping the ball that could have saved him,
and you know they're they're Mark Cooper's got I think
seven or eight drops already this season. Now, this is
a team, uh, by all intents and purposes, I would
(20:25):
have thought had been the dark horse to knock off
either the pitch Pards still a little New England Patriots
to get them to the ultimately the Super Bowl. Like
this is the only team that I thought it was
like a legit threat. But the problem with that this
team is that they don't know how to win football
games when it's time to win those football games. That's
what that's the difference between teams that are contenders and
(20:49):
teams that are pretending and that haven't made that leap
to be in that contender yet. You've gotta make your
plays when the ball comes to you. They're not making
their plays. Not only that they have a quarterback grit
on the man in their car. We have no idea
what's what's eating him or what's what's bothering him right now,
you gotta running back in beast mole that can care
your team. He's obviously you've seen that at Seattle. So
(21:11):
I honestly can't put my finger on what the problem
is in open and I kind of wanted to ask
you that question. What do you think, from a non player,
what the problem is based on when you watch these
football games, other than the wide receivers just dropping balls
in the mid designment. You know, sometimes if you look
back last year, they won a lot of games. Remember
the Saints game where they went for two, went for
(21:33):
it on fourth down. Those are a little bit like
one run games in baseball, where eventually it kind of
evens out right, I think I don't think they were
necessarily as good as their record led you to believe
last year. And I think this is a little bit
of regression. And like, look, when you're when your best
wide receiver has a case of the drops earl in
the year, and he's supposed to be your most secure hands. Um,
(21:54):
I think you call and and your schedule is more difficult. Yes,
they lost the Redskins, but the Redskins are good. The
Redskins are also much better at home. Yes, they lost
the Broncos. The Broncos are much better at home they
are in the road. So I think it's I never
think it's one thing or it's just one thing. I
think you got a little bit too much too soon.
We got a little bit of ahead of ourselves because
they won some games last year they probably shouldn't have won,
(22:15):
and their schedule is far more difficult, and now their
quarterback has heard all of those things kind of factored
in to not just a loss yesterday, but the poor
performance against the Skins. Right, so what do you see
their overall record being? Uh if from H Well, the problem.
The problem is like you start chalking up wins and
losses right now, Kansas City is playing better football than anybody.
(22:38):
They still gotta play them twice and they got Denver
at home. They got Chargers twice. Chargers haven't beaten anybody.
But the Chargers aren't terrible. I think you still gotta
get reasonable and think you're still a ten and six,
nine and seven sort of team, would even five because
I think they'll split that series with the Chiefe only
(22:58):
because it's the Chiefe off as versus their defense. And
I give the Oakland writers their defense, um the the
only issue that I have. And they'll sweep to Chargers
because you're saying that they're not terrible. But the Chargers
hadn't beat anybody. No, the Chargers find way to lose
games they should win all the time. They just do.
That's just that. That's that's doesn't matter. It seem no
(23:19):
matter if they fire the coach or whatever. You know,
last year when they lost to the Raiders up in Oakland,
they had him beat missed, uh makeup a field goal.
The field goal kicker let him down twice this year,
blocked against blocked against the Broncos, and then he missed
two against the Dolphins as well. And then you know
now they're now they're just getting beat up. Let's get
to I want to get to the Steelers. Look in basketball,
(23:41):
I can tell you every two guard things. They should
get the ball every time down the court. Every wing
runs down the court, I'm open, I'm open. I can
take my guy, which is a lot like wide receivers, right,
they always they're always open. Antonio Brown was open, Big
Ben did miss him. It should have been a touchdown.
But even even though every one respects Antonio Brown, do
you see anything amiss with him throwing a fit on
(24:04):
the sideline making it so public even if he has
every right to be upset he is, in my opinion,
he has every right to be understanding I And I'm
not taking anything away from Ben. But had that not
been Ben Roethlisberger, that have been just a regular young
quarterback or just eight quarterback period, and not Ben Roethlisberger,
a future Hall of Famer, this conversation to be going different. So,
(24:30):
and not only that I'm seen Antonio Brown worked his
ass off, and Tonio Brown is is the best receiver
in football today. I've seen how often he works and
how hard he worked, like everything is dedicated to his
craft and to put in the work that he put in.
Because nobody ever say, nobody, in my opinion, would ever say, hey,
(24:54):
Ben is not playing good football, like Lady Rill ran
about thirty five times. Yes, I mean Sunday times. Dam
was eighteen or thirty and you throw a pick. So
I'm not so sure that the quarterback played. He isn't
an issue or could Everybody is putting it off on
(25:15):
Lebyan Bell saying hey, you know Lebian he held out
and they're putting all the blame on him and said, hey,
he's the reason why this team is stall it. He
just wann't up to part. He just wasn't this, and
he just wasn't that. Like to put a bad day
on the fact that they're just not playing good football
right now, I think it's saying I think you look
at a bunch of those guys in that draft class,
(25:36):
Philip Rivers, who we talked about a little bit not
playing great football either. They'll never put it on the quarterback,
because these are future Hall of famers and because their
careers are something that can fall back on. Nobody just
overlooked it, like god, you know that's that's just him
being him, Like, no, he's playing terrible football, pointed out
saying what it is that you need to say and
(25:57):
move on, don't put it on another guy. Are you
are we willing as bad as Golf was last year?
Are you are you bought in to it? This being
believable what they've been able to put together for four games.
They just beat the Cowboys on the road. Obviously, I
know San Francisco is not good, but he looked good
on Thursday night the week before. Are you willing to
buy in on what we've seen from the Rams and
(26:19):
specifically Jared Golf? Do you want me to tell you
what game plan that the Rams use against the Cowboys
and the Cowboys hadn't seen in the long dun It
was the Cowboys game plan, wasn't That's exactly what it was.
It was the Cowboys game plan. Golf, don't lose this game.
We're gonna run the ball. We're gonna run the ball
until we have to throw it, and then you see
(26:40):
who was the better running back, I said, Ezekiel Elliott. Uh,
not in the top five. But you see who was
a better running back on that day? I mean, uh,
he finished forward a hundred and seventy two yards Russian
and then another ninety eight yards or season and two
touchdowns the three I'm not talking about Ezekiel Elliott, you
though up. Yeah, So if you're gonna look at pier
(27:06):
numbers just from this weekend, it's just that. That's all
you gotta do. Don't blow this game for us. We
just need you to maintain And you know why you
can maintain this because our Deepens is just that good.
Our defense is good enough for you to just go
in play football. Don't turn the ball over, and let's
just handing the ball off. I can coach this. I
could coach the ram. All you got to do handing
(27:26):
the ball off. That's it. Play Stella Deepens like you've
been playing, and hand the ball off and just take
care of the ball. That's all you have to do.
If we don't commit any turnovers, we're gonna beat every
team that we played because our defense is good enough
to do that. That's the Agel Williams, two time Pro
Bowler and only the second leading rusher in Carolina Panthers.
(27:47):
You definitely take a shot. And it also brought up
another point that I made early on in the week
that was leading up to this about the Cowboys offense
and just what I thought about Doc. And they meet
you like, they don't play well from high and if
you go up to touchdowns, the games over because they
coached him to manage the game, they're not they haven't
(28:09):
took that next step and coaching him to win football
games because they feel like they have time or what
they don't understand that time is running out and they're
not fast. So you the teast this guy to win
games and stop managing games, or you continue to be
the teams that you've always been. When it's time to
you to win games, you can't because he hadn't learned
how to. Dangel A great stuff this week, Thanks so
(28:30):
much for joining from Man. Thanks Man. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Doug gott Leaps Show weekdays
at three p m. Eastern noon Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the I Heart Radio app Call It and
now saying earlier in the day, Colin, how this to
say about Matt Ryan coming out the Falcons loss. Let's
(28:51):
say you were a realtor. I'm gonna take away your
worst year as a realtor, play your first year in
the business, and I'm gonna take away your best year.
Anybody in realty can have one right home sale the
remaining eight years that will be what you are. Isn't
it interesting about Matt Ryan, who people were writing articles
about two months ago as the next Aaron Rodgers. He's
(29:12):
been in the league ten years. Take out last year.
He's been good, nothing special. His passer rating is back
to seven, closer to his career average. His touchdown interception
ratio back to being average. Matt Ryan has been in
this league for a decade. He's been great for a year.
That is not who he is. He's good. He's closer
(29:34):
to average than Aaron Rodgers. Uh yeah, I mean I
looked I closer to I actually think he's smack dab
in the middle of average and Aaron Rodgers. Right, I'm
a radical centrist. I think he's actually right there. He's
not average, He's not he's better than. I would rather
have him than FLACU, Yeah, I would. Now it's also
(29:57):
fair to say, remember he played in domes, which always
helps your production. Case in point, Drew brees in domes
much better than out of domes. Uh, Peyton Manning, I
know he had the fifty touchdown year with the Broncos,
but a dome covered up the fact he didn't have
a great arm for his entire career. Um. But we
should also remember that the Falcons had had never had
(30:20):
back to back to back winning seasons. He had three
in a row. Matter of fact, he had a winning
a winning record his first five years in the league.
They went to the NFC Championship game. He went to
his first Super. They should have with decent Placa had
same play calling which elevated him, should have allowed him
to win the Super and staid it gave opportunity to
the Patriots. I would agree. He's not in the Aaron
(30:42):
Rodgers category. He's not in the Tom Brady category, but
he's better than the middle of the pack. Let's be honest,
and if you want to use yesterday as your logic
behind it, that's fine. Also remember that Julio Jones got
hurt yesterday. Mohammed Sanu was hurt yesterday. So when you
don't have your number one and number two he ain't
Megan plays to anybody. Aaron Rodgers, the great Aaron Rodgers, who,
(31:06):
by my estimation, and other people. Have you noticed other
people are coming along with us, the best to ever
play the position. When you have Jordy Nelson, they were bad,
They weren't good. As Jordy Nelson got healthy, he got
his number one wide receiver back, everybody else started to
get better. And even now we make excuses for Aaron
(31:26):
Rodgers and his tackles and Rodgers of his running game,
and Rodgers doesn't have this, doesn't have that. The fact
is will make an excuse for him Rogers because we
know he's great. I don't believe he's great. I don't
think anybody really believed. This is Matt Ryan last year
winning the m v P was not because he was
the best quarterback. This is a lot like Cam Newton
winning the m v P. He had the best season
(31:49):
in a great season. Um and a guy who had
never thrown the ball downfield averaged nearly ten yards an attempt.
His quarterback rating is an all time high. It was
an outlier for his career, But if that's an outlier
for his career, he's had a damn good career. Fox

went to Troy like ten years ago and got beat
in a Friday night and so this year when Oklahoma
State went to South Alabama, was like, as long as
they're not going to Troy, right, those dudes can play well. Uls,
you made that mistake this weekend is they welcomed in
Troy UH to their friendly compines and played him on
(32:34):
homecoming and got beat. Their head coach, Neil Brown joins
us on the Doug Gotlie Show. Coach, how are you
doing well? Doug? I appreciate you having me on. That's
that's a good memory people. You know, the little known
fact about that game is the post conference, the press
conference immediately following that game is uh has become has
become a bigger story than that actual game. But right,
(32:55):
that was the I'm a man, I'm I'm a man,
I'm forty right, that's exactly right, That's exactly right. But uh,
you know that was that was that was a huge win.
That was that was a good, really good memory. I
was on Friday night and we soundly beat beat your
cowboys that night, and uh, and that was that was
here at home. But that was a big win. I know,
I know. It's one of those deals to you guy,
who the hell schedules Troy? Why are you playing Troy?
(33:18):
Which is exactly what ed or Run must have gone
in and said, like to his op skin, like who
who who decided Troy to come in and play? How
do this? How did this game actually come to be?
It's been on the it's been on the calendar for
on the schedule for a while. Um, it's a game
that makes sense just because from a geographic location, that's, uh,
we're gonna play one financial game a year. That's kind
(33:39):
of our scheduling philosophy was we're gonna play one financial
game and then we're gonna play two home and homes
and then an SCS opponent. Our noncom schedule, we play
eight conference games. And but this has been on the calendars.
We've had we've had two really close losses to the
l s U. One in two thousand four h where
that was before I got here, but we were Troy
(34:01):
was winning twenty to seventeen and L s U. Then
coached by by coach Saban scored um with about three
minutes ago to win the game. And then I was
the offense coordinator in O eight. We were actually this
almost embarrassing to tell we were winning the game. Three
L s U has the biggest on homecoming. Um. L
s U has our biggest, biggest uh turnaround in school history. Yeah.
(34:26):
And and they beat us there. Um And look that
you guys wasn't like you guys are coming off a
bad season, right, I mean ten and three last year. Uh,
give me your in terms of how you thought the
game would go and how it would go like they
they were completely different in the first half. And they
had been you know, Matt Kendall's offense has all this
motion and the shifting, you know, a lot of a
(34:47):
lot of side to side, you know, a lot of
lateral throws. And yet they kind of tried to line
up in old school kind of ground and pounding in
the first half. Is that what you expected? Yeah? We did.
You know. I always pay attention to the post and
coaches press conferences during the week and what they're saying
to the media, and and coach Orgon had had talked
about being a physical football team and getting downhill, and
(35:09):
so we were prepared for that. You know, the thing
with Matt Canada is he's getting some scrutiny right now,
but he was probably his offensive Pitt was probably the
most watched offense by any um, by other offensive coaches
in the country. I mean, you look at what a
lot of the teams in the NFL are doing through
the first three or four weeks of the season. A
lot of it is piggybacking off what he did at Pitt.
(35:30):
And so that's a guy that is really innovative, um,
and he's getting he's coming under some scrutiny now, but
he's one of the better offensive coaches in the country.
But we did. We prepared, you know, I think that's
the this This wasn't a flute. I think you watched
some of the game. This wasn't a fluke. We we
didn't trick. We didn't gimmick these guys. We lined up
and play big boy football in one in big boy style,
(35:51):
by running the football, stopping the run, in billion special
playing silid on special teams. No, it's not just that,
but you the more physical team, how is it. I
think what happens is the average college football fan. What
average football fan says, Look, l s U has the
most kids in the NFL. They've always been recruiting. Well,
there is, she has been a quarterback. The problem is
(36:13):
never upfront, especially coming off less miles. As an old
offensive lineman, old offensive line coach, how is it that
your team was more physical at the point of attack? Well,
we were more physical. I wouldn't say on every single play,
but consistently over the course of four quarters, we were
the more physical football team. Um. Our offensive defensive line. Uh,
(36:33):
I wouldn't say dominated, but one their fair share of
bottles at the line of scrimmage. I felt like a
running back Jordan Song was the best player on the
football field on Saturday night. He had thirty carries, hundred
ninety one yards in a touchdown and really had some
huge runs after contact. Um. But I think it goes
back to we as a program. We we went into
(36:56):
this game with a huge ship on our shoulder because
for number of years now we felt like that we
were one of the better programs in the group of five.
We won five conference championships. We'd want we had, we'd
had huge wins at home. You mentioned OClO State game.
We've been Missouri here um the only Roade win in
our division in our brief Division one history, and we
we went Division one in two thousand four. Was that
(37:18):
was that Mississippi State, and that was during our transitional period.
But we'd come close so many times. I mean we're
talking about who's who've caught. We go to Allow State,
you know, Florida State, Tennessee, l s U two different times, Georgia.
I mean, all those programs with either a lead or
within one score in the fourth quarter, and we didn't win.
And part of the reason we didn't win were turnovers
and then giving up big plays in the return game.
(37:40):
And we talked about to our kids all week and
we knew it was gonna be a four core game.
And they respond and they're really hungry. And in our
experience against Clemson last year, we lost by six points
at the eventual national champions and our kids had a
lot of confidence and they played physical football, they played
with the chip on the shoulder, and we were the
hungry of football team in that game. I gotta ask you, though,
(38:01):
you know you're up seventeen nothing and then it's fourteen.
They scored a touchdown and then you guys, Then you
guys fumble right four player who has to do fumbled?
Who was? It was our best running back? So right?
So yeah, you guys marching down the field. It's about
(38:21):
But wait, it's fourteen. Now, Remember as you told us,
and I think they mentioned during the game, which you
know you were offensive coordine, your biggest comeback in l
s U history. There had to be a all, hell, no,
this is not gonna happen again. Fourteen? What are you
saying into the headset? Well, I tried to stay calm.
I really think your your football team is always a
(38:42):
director reflection of how you respond to situation. Your response,
your players are gonna mirrory your response. So I had
a lot of confidence in our guys. We were such
a different team, and I was matured and personally as
a coach a lot over in two thousan days, first
year I ever called plays as offensive coordinator, UM two
thousand seventeen, I've been doing it for an extended period
(39:03):
of time. I feel like I'm matured, understand how to
manage game is better, and I knew we had the
ability to run the ball. The clock was on our
on our side at that point. And we made them drive.
They scored off that turnover, but they took a took
too much time, but too much. They took a lot
of it. They took a lot of time off the clock.
And but you do any time you've been in experience,
(39:25):
like like losing the thirty one to three, that always
creeps back into your mind. You always think about it.
But I've really had confidence in our guys that we
were gonna get it done. It's one They did score
that touchdown and you guys are lining up to feel
the onside kick. What do you what do you tell
your what do you tell your your hands team? You
gotta have courage, That's what it is. And you're gonna
(39:46):
get hit on the play, which our kids. John Johnson
recovered the which is a great story. He's a local
kid from right here in Troy, Alabama, and he gets
he recovers the game winning played on the onside kick.
Uh for the most significt I don't say it's the
biggest win. We want three national championships, so it's not
the biggest win. But it's the most significant win in
our Division one history. And he makes the play, so
I think it's a fitting in but just have courage?
(40:08):
Does it have courage? All right? And you end up
you punted? They got the ball back into an interception,
but it was it was too it was too tough
road to hoe to get them back. I want to
ask you about the winning the one double A national
championships as opposed to being an FBS to which you're
the likelihood of ever getting a shot at the college
football playoff is slim if not, if not none? Like
in truth, is it better to go D one where
(40:31):
you don't get a shot to say you're a national
championship as opposed to the way it used to be? Well,
let me ask I'll turn the question back on you.
If if we're an SCS, if we're an FCS school,
are you have are you having me on this radio show?
You know what I mean? Probably? Because probably yeah. And
we were the lead. We were the leads story um
(40:53):
in college football on Saturday night. We were the lead.
We were lead on Sports Center through Sunday afternoon, uh
when the NFL games got over. So the publicity that
the Division one football has brought to this university and
the opportunities it's it's allowed us to grow. We're we're
sitting on a campus that has you're a basketball guy,
(41:14):
We've got as nice as basketball. We got the nice
as basketball are in the state of Alabama. Um, we've
got huge investments in in dormitories, new cafeteria, education building, redonne,
our business building. Um. There's all kinds of things that
have happened since we made the decision to go to
Division one football. And I don't think that. I don't
know if I don't know if our university grows at
(41:35):
the same rate, if if if our leadership didn't make
that decision. Stug got liba show, Fox Sports Trade and
Neil Brown joining US Troy's head football coach that just
pulled off an incredible upset beat l s U at
l s U on homecoming. Who has the controls of
Troy's Twitter account? Well, you're asking about the university account. Um,
(41:56):
I don't that that. I don't know how many times
I got retweeted. Um, but our athletic department does not
does not control that, all right? I mean, is are you?
I mean, everybody I know thought it was funny, but
I don't know. Here's the deal, it was, it is funny,
all right. When I when I initially saw it. I laughed. Um.
(42:18):
When I tweeted that from my personal account, the answers
no U with our athletics people pointed out, No, Um,
the biggest thing is we have all the respect in
the world for l s U. All right, one of
the premier programs in the country. Um, they did schedules
from homecoming. That that is fact. Um what I told them,
(42:40):
absolutely not. Did it did it work? Did it bring
further publicity? Yes? All right. Look you can do a
victory laugh when you win the game, you know. I
mean it's I find I find I found. I found
it to be lighthearted. I wouldn't I wouldn't lose any sleepover.
Doesn't sound like no, I didn't. I didn't. It was
it's funny, you know. And it's it's I used as uh,
(43:02):
I use a couple of things as a learning point
in our team meeting today. But you know it thanks
catch fire and and that caught fire. I mean it,
it's that was when we were on Sports Center, that
was that tweet was up was on the screen, which
is which is unbelievable. It actually is a really great
teaching point, right, Like one tweet from a university account
(43:23):
that nobody you know, no one in collegeball normally follows
all of a sudden. Now it goes viral. It does
show the power of one tweet. It's a great lust.
Well listen, I know you got South Alabama up coming
in a little over a week. It be hard to
get your guys, uh, hard to get you guys back up,
I'm sure after that incredible win. But I hope you
do it, and I appreciate you join us. So I
appreciate it. And I'll tell you your basketball guy, our
(43:44):
basketball team took it to the wire last year, and
we've got everybody back. We've got a chance. All right,
we'll put it. We'll put him down on Cinderella Watch.
Thanks so much, Neal. Alright, that's coach Neil Brown joining
us on the Doug Otlip Show
