(00:57):
Last night was Thursday Night Football and once again the
Patriots look like the Patriots. What's the difference. I'll tell
you in a second. The Patriots won eight straight games.
They're nine to two. They currently hold the best record
in the NFL. How did this happen? How does happen?
I have a belief system, and how it happened? I remember,
(01:19):
like again, they're not playing a great schedule.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
The wins are over the Dolphins, the Panthers, the Bills
win is a big one, the Saints, the Titans, the Browns,
the Falcons, the Buccaneers, and the Jets. Okay, Buccaneers and
Bill's only two playoff teams likely out of that group.
Bill's definitely a playoff team. Buccaneers maybe, but probably. Hey,
the rest is you're playing a last place schedule or
close to the last place schedule. Goes close to a
(01:43):
last place team. But I think there's a couple of
different parts to it which I can relate to as
a coach when we're dealing with the Portalay, Mike Brable
rebuilt his entire defense. Eight starters were free agents last year.
So what does that mean? Okay, so he used his time. First,
he was a coach, so he knew his guys, he
(02:06):
knew who he wanted to bring in, and when he
came in, he brought his guys for his system and
it was plug and play. And it took him a
little bit early in the season when they lost two
out of three, but they slowly kind of figured it out.
And then it's all different. When you have a quarterback, quarterback,
point guard, doesn't matter. You got to go one. He
had a year of seasoning, a year to figure it out,
(02:28):
surround him with a good team, and all of a sudden,
now the Patriots are back. Here's Mike Brabile, head coach,
talking about Drake May after the game.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
You know, we have high expectations for Drake. He has
high expectations for himself. Phil continue to improve and know
that he'll stay humble through this all. And you know again,
and as far as the performance tonight, I thought it was,
you know again, in first view, you know, pretty good.
He was good enough to win, and he took care
of the football man.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
And again, some of it is he's had a year seasoning.
A lot of it is they did a great job
of evaluating, and you get a little bit lucky, right,
you get it a little bit lucky. So much of it. Look,
would I love to say it's about coaching competency. It is,
and he's a more than competent bike Raable is an
(03:20):
excellent coach, but a lot of it is when you
got the quarterback right, everything becomes easier. You track every
one of these teams that are doing well, and the
quarterback is a gigantic factor as to why it's really
(03:41):
really hard to win if you don't have quality quarterback play. Now,
you got to put things in place. You got to
rebuild the offensive line. They gotta have some weapons around him.
But look at the teams that are playing well, look
at the teams that are playing poorly, and there is
one common denominator quarterback. Right here's Drake May, the quarterback
talking about his weapons. Uh.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
Now that trust was built up. Uh, you know, probably
when I was in middle school, when he was playing
in the league. It's it was long ago. You know,
guys like him and Hunter and Mac. You know, you
trust those guys for what they've done in this league.
And I just tried to give him chances. And you know,
Steph and you know, you break a couple of tackles
getting the end zone. But you know those guys are
great for us tonight.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, Stefan Diggs nine catches, Hey Mac Hollis who likes
to get dressed up as a bunch of stuff. Hunter,
Henry of course been around for a minute among the
weapons that he has, and they're giving him, they're giving
him time to throw. But Stefan Diggs being the go
to guy, and obviously Stefan Diggs is one of those
guys like AJ Brown. If he doesn't get the ball,
(04:41):
he's gonna complain. And if he complains then then it
ruins your team. But yeah, Rabel's done a great job.
I think the best thing they've done is with the
defense and bringing over players and understanding exactly what they needed,
when they needed how they needed it, and doing a
good job of value building rebuilding this defense. But Drake
(05:05):
may coming into his own. You have to give the
front office credit. You gotta give Vrabel credit for putting
enough pieces around him. They ran the football just enough.
When you get the quarterback right, the rest of it
is a lot easier. When you get the point guard right,
the rest of it is a lot easier, a lot easier.
(05:26):
Matter of fact, let's get to our Tyrack play of
the day. For forty years, Tyrak has been helping customers
find the right tires for how what where They drive
ship fast and free and back by free road as
a protection with convenient installation options like mobile tire inslation,
tyreq dot com the way tire buying should be. Here's
our Tyreq play Theday care of ninety eight point five,
the Sports up and the Patriots radio network.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
He snapped to me, looks to his left, he pumps,
he throws, cuking the touchdown Patriots and who caught it?
Trivia Henderson hack.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
Tred for the rookie Travon Henderson, who of course three touchdowns,
two rushing that one receiving, and it's our ti Raq
play of the Day, Buyer. There's a lot that goes
into the success and the turnaround of the Patriots. Obviously,
(06:14):
I think their ability to get that defense up and
running pretty smoothly is a big part. Don't get me wrong.
The soft schedule doesn't hurt either. And then Drake May's
emergence and the way in which they and and look,
this is part of it is recruiting and signing in
free agents. It's all it is. There's a hit rate,
it's not one hundred percent. Some of it it's about evaluations.
(06:38):
But Drake May, a guy who people thought was the
number one prospect, then fell a little bit, then raised,
and the Patriots got him. Turns out to be right
now the best prospect in two years ago. Strapp.
Speaker 6 (06:49):
Yeah, Drake May is the biggest deal for me. And
I love their wins is you pointed out that they have,
especially the one in Buffalo, the one that they had
in tama And so I'm not going to hold their
other wins against them. They are against kind of the
bottom of the National Football League. And one of their
losses was against the Steelers in a game where they
(07:09):
turned the ball over five times. They lost by a
touchdown in that game, and then the other loss is
the one to the Raiders. So I think that they've
at least proven with those road wins in the games
that they the game that they lost to the Steelers,
it's like, all right, if you just don't turn the
ball over five times and turn it over at the
goal line, maybe that's a win for them, and they're
even better and have the best record in the National
(07:30):
Football League. But to me, it's all about Drake May.
And it's funny because it's the draft class of twenty
twenty four that we will continue to be talking about
like we did I don't know, nineteen eighty three, like
we do of the Sam Darnold, Baker, Mayfield, Josh Allen,
Lamar Jackson draft class like those. It's those classes that
(07:51):
stand out. So when I see like Drake May have success,
this may be completely unfair, but I go to the
point of Ryan Powle of the Chicago Bears pointing out
the fact in the film room because he so wanted
to draft Caleb Williams, and which was fine, it was
absolutely fine. But it makes me laugh to think of
(08:13):
here was a guy who was poking holes in Drake May,
trying to convince others that they needed Caleb Williams to
be their quarterback, which again I think a lot of
people thought, and Drake May shining like he did, moves
well in the pocket. I was just really really impressed
with how Drake May's come along in the two years.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
Yeah, and last year it was Jade Daniels was the guy, right,
he had unbelievable breakthrough season and there was some regression
this year. Obviously the elbow injury now is going to
help that regression. Caleb Williams is playing better. I think
the point you made is a really good one. And again,
let me just personalize it, hey, because when you're trying
to evaluate players. Oftentimes you have to do it on film. Okay,
(08:55):
I was able to recruit a couple kids in person,
and still you get them, and it can be different.
You know, I have a player every one of my
staff and I had remember I had changed out three
assistants for three new assistants. All six assistants were like,
we got to get this guy. And to date, he
(09:17):
not playing very well. And you know, I don't know
if we missed. I don't know yet. It's still too early.
But the point is it is a in evaluations and
inexact science. And I saw him in person. I'm like, man,
for our level, this is really really good. And so
I can tell you and like, honestly, the Patriots, if
you ask them honestly, would you have taken Jane Daniels
(09:39):
ahead of him? Would you have taken Kayleb Williams ahead him? Right? Well,
what if the Bears drafted drafted Drake May. What if
the Commanders still drafted Jayan Williams, would you have drafted
Kayla Williams? What would everything look like? It's such an
I mean, the Chargers have this with Justin Herbert. Yeah,
the Dolphins took Tua, but had Tua and Herbert both
been there, And you know, Usco does join us every week.
(10:01):
We can ask him next week he'll answer the question.
But if he answered it honestly, they probably would have
taken to a even with all their concerns. So there
is a bit of a luck factor. Guys do get better,
guys do get worse. Guys getting some interesting situations and
you know, going through two different coaching staffs, all those
things are interesting. But you're right. I mean, Drake May
(10:21):
and that quarterback class, like Caleb Williams, it's so up
and down. We still don't know where that settles. Yeah,
Daniels was so good in year one and it's been
so wonky in year two. We still don't know. Drake
May as of now is playing the best football. We'll
see if he ends up becoming the best quarterback.
Speaker 6 (10:40):
Yeah, the Daniels portion of it, you're hoping that he
can stay healthy. But I also think that there's something
to Cliff Kingsbury and making sure that Jade and Daniels
didn't plateau after his rookie season, because there was some
question as well, like in Arizona with Kyler Murray and
where the Cardinals were, and now that he's not there
anymore than Kyler Murray kind of is the same guy
(11:02):
or maybe worse than before. Maybe it's not all on
Kingsbury's plate. However, that is something that they're gonna have
to prove in Washington in years to go.
Speaker 5 (11:09):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
It's The Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. So I
want to get to brock perty and whether or not
he's the right, right, right choice. I like this. If
you're listening on radio, why it's gotta be mad.
Speaker 7 (11:32):
Yes, you gotta be mad. Love it.
Speaker 2 (11:36):
It's clever. It's clever. Mark Dominic in a second. Okay,
So Dan, I'm sorry. I was wrong. I'm stupid, you're smart,
I'm I'm ugly, you're good looking. This is my way
of apologizing. Okay. Last night, in our game, are lost
(12:00):
to Saint Thomas. Early on in the first half. We
have a player, uh Dontrell Hewlett, who's a point guard
and had been trending towards starting and he was trying
to get back defensively planted his foot. He may have
jumped and landed on the foot. I still don't know
what happened. Uh, But there was a time out called
(12:25):
because of injury, and I was about to yell at
him for what I thought was getting out of the
way of the charge when he fell down. And then
I looked at his leg, his foot, and I realized
why he had gone down. It was a cam scatterboo
type of injury.
Speaker 6 (12:43):
Oh geez.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
And uh, I just saw the foot be in the
wrong direction, and a couple of my players looked like
they were going to vomit, and one was about to
start crying, and you know, we we gathered him and
we sat him down, We calmed down, we just talked
about the game. And then one rejected on him and
then I saw it an open wound fracture. And you
(13:06):
guys know that I talk about this all the time.
There's three types of people, right, I don't want to
see it, don't show it to me. I'll just see
it once so everybody knows what I'm talking about and
can't watch it enough. And I've always been type three.
And my my logic behind it is like I just
I don't know. I've my my ex wife gave berth
(13:26):
and like one of the most fascinating experiences of my
life is when I saw her take them take my
babies from her stomach in a C section, right two
different times. The first time, you know, we were so
freaked out. The babies came early. I saw a little bit,
but when my son came, like I watched the entire surgery.
I was like fascinated by I'm sitting there with popcorn.
This is amazing. And I always think, Okay, well, guy,
(13:49):
everybody recovers, right, they'll be fine. Uh yeah, my opinion
changed last night. I mean, I still I have it
on I have the photo on my phone, but I
haven't because I have to share it when allowed to
with the doctors. Doctor Alan Shamrock, who's our ankle and
foot specialists with the Packers, helps us as well. Thanks
(14:10):
to him and Pravea you know where he's been kind
of communicating. But I will tell you that, holy cow,
that's awful. Like I've experienced a lot of things. I've
seen a lot of stuff that was a lot and
just update for anybody who saw it or doesn't care
about it. Whatever he had surgery. They closed the wound thankfully. Yeah,
(14:36):
they they got the leg back in place, and I again,
he's gonna play basketball again, I believe. But in regardless
of that, we're just concerned about infection right now because
that's what happens with those open wounds, and we're just
all our prayers are with him and his family. The
doctors in Saint Paul have been amazing, but a holy
(14:59):
cow is not ready for that day. So do any
of those videos or photos that I sent you guys
on group text. My bad won't be doing that in
the future. This is the new empathetic Doug Gottlieb understanding
that that's a lot, especially when you see it in person.
Speaker 6 (15:17):
Yeah, just to never it's never been my thing. I
I don't know if it started with Joe Thaisman. I
think that's when it when it did, where it just was,
you know, you see that as a young kid and
there's no Yeah, just it's always been difficult for me
to see those things. I hope your player fully recovers
Dontrelle was that his name? Yes, Yeah, that wishes to him.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Yeah, he's a great kid, and you know he was
all loopy on on pain meds and he was trying
to get back on defense. You told me not to jump,
and I jumped, like dontroll. I so don't don't care
about any mistakes you made right now. I just want
you to feel better. Oh that was rough. Stug Gottlieb
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Right, I'll ask you,
(15:59):
damn buyer, if you were Kyle Shanahan, would you start
rock Perty for the Niners?
Speaker 7 (16:05):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (16:07):
Yes, Yeah. The way it works is like, look, in
addition to uh, in addition to the fact that rock
Purty has done nothing wrong other than miss games because
of injury, and we know that, you know, Mac Jones
has always been the apple of the eye. It's once
you give him that contract, it's his job unless he absolutely,
positively completely butchers it. There's just that that's that's the
(16:32):
way it works. Is that they get right a first
refusal if you will. And and the other part is
it kills leadership. You know, if you're brock Purty, you
have to be the unquestioned leader of the offense. And
if there's any hesitation between when you put him in
when you don't put him in, and if he's healthy,
(16:53):
a healthy, healthy, ready to go, that that kills his leadership. Well,
let me ask Mark Domink. Maybe he has a different opinion. Okay,
he's been a GM in the NFL, he's worked in
the NFL for twenty five years. He joins us here
on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. I
know you don't want to say the guy who makes
the most money has to get, has to have right
a first refusal, but that is how it works, especially
(17:15):
with brock Perty. And it's not like it's not like,
you know, he's been replaced and while he pipped to
that extent.
Speaker 8 (17:25):
Yeah, No, I think you're absolutely right, and I think
it's a couple of different things, right. I mean a
big point of this is brock Perty has, for the
most part, for Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch has been a winner.
And so you know, I know that you know, twenty
twenty four wasn't ideal and this year hasn't been great.
I don't think he's been himself, but he absolutely deserves
to be the first one out of the tunnel and
be on that field. I actually, Doug, I look at
(17:46):
it when you when you kind of look at the
NFC just in general, right, and you start to already
start to put the picture together of you know, what's
the standing's like, what's the conference look like? In the NFC.
To me, the one team that's on the outside looking
in that still feels like they should be in the
top top seven in the playoffs are the San Francisco
forty nine Ers, And I think I would put Rock
Pretty in because I think they've got to just catch
(18:06):
the Chicago Bears, and I think the front of the
seven will already be set. I don't think that the
Vikings are going to make a run. I don't think
Dallas will. I don't think Washington can. It's really coming
down to the Kenda Bears. Hold on, I think the
forty nine ers with Rock Pretty can.
Speaker 2 (18:19):
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, Mark Dominic is our guest. Mark.
The Patriots turnaround was on full display yesterday. I'm interested
in Rock not Rock Perty. Sorry, in Drake May. Where
did you have him evaluated in last year's NFL draft?
Speaker 8 (18:39):
Yeah? It was tight, you know for me with Drake May,
I probably wasn't quite as high, but I mean I
liked him better than you know, the bow Nicks. I
liked him better than the Michael Tennis, because I'm just
not as huge as you. Though I love Steve Young,
I'm just not a huge left tended quarterback fan for
the way the ball spins for everybody, and so that's
kind of a little bit different. But that's you know,
it doesn't mean you're not going to take one. You know.
(19:01):
I was kind of more JJ McCarthy in that realm
of like, you know, six through ten or six through
twelve is where I thought Drake May is. But he's
clearly proven me wrong. You know, the athletes there that
we get to see in terms of him running the football,
but the decision making getting the ball out, you know
making you know, I think the biggest thing with Drake
May is even games last last last night, when you
watching a younger quarterback be able to throw the ball
(19:23):
the way he can and end up close to three
hundred yards and and you know completing you know, almost
nine percent of his passes in yardsbury attempt at this
point in season. Those are great signs when you realize
that your number two wide receiver is your tight end,
Like you really don't have a ton of ton of
weapons on the offensive side still at the receiver room
or the tight end room, and so when you get
to have a year where you're going to hopefully put
(19:44):
those in, that's pretty exciting. Well, and again, Josh McDaniels
is developing another quarterback and they're consistently putting thirty points
on the board every week, and with that, you should
win when you've got a Rabel defense.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
Still Gottlieb Show here on on Fox Sports Radio. Obviously,
the Jets are going to have to rebuild. They sold
off as many pieces as they can. What what what's
your belief that this coaching staff is the right staff
for the rebuild.
Speaker 8 (20:14):
I just I think it will be. I would not
be one and done with Aaron Glenn. I just I
wouldn't do that. I just don't think that that's going
to really help anything at all. And I think I'm
just going to, you know, bite my tongue and believe
that I'm getting Dan Campbell junior and that it's just
going to take a little time. And Dan Campbell probably
came in with a little bit better you know, situation
at quarterback for sure, but also some pieces were there.
(20:37):
I mean, the Jets now that Garrett Wilson's going to
I R and I know it's three or four weeks
or four weeks. I just don't think I put Garrett
Wilson back on the football field this year. And there's
just no point. And they're battling the Titans right now
for the number one pick in the draft, and so
I think you stick with this staff. I think you
stick with this plan. Obviously. You know coach Glenn I
(20:57):
soon bought into trading Sauce Gardner, winning Williams, and so
because he's bought into those things, I feel like you've
got to you know, he's thinking long term. I think
can't have to think long term with him. And does
that mean you know, four or five years now? But
does it mean two or at least three? Yes, I
think you do. And I think jets Man's just got
to understand that that's just the way it should be,
because that's the only way to really kind of start
to build a culture.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
Agree with you? So, Doug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports,
right you? Building a culture? Is is really? Is is everything? Okay,
let's let's scatter around the league a little bit. Uh,
Brian Dable getting fired? What were your thoughts of why
they did it? Now?
Speaker 8 (21:37):
No, I didn't love it, uh, you know, just because
I felt like, you know, what's the rush, uh in
terms of what they've got to get done? Why do
they feel like they need to hurry up and and
and and I go of a coach when you've got time, like,
there's time here to kind of sit back and kind
of see how the season folds for a few more weeks.
He's obviously, you know, we've got to stop Jackson. You know,
Jackson dart from you know, launching with his head in
(21:58):
every run. But at least it was ope with Jackson
dark like that's why you had him there. I thought,
so to turn around and give it to my kafka
uh and to say, look, we're going to move on.
Maybe there was some rumblings on the inside of the
organization that was a little bit more uh loud, then
I guess I would have thought. And so my thinking
is that I don't love it. I would have waited
(22:21):
probably until like the last month and just until December,
if I was going to do it. You're already, Doug.
You know how this works in the coaching world that
the GM has already got a list in his in
his in his desk of who he's going to, you know,
start to interview and who he's going to start to
move forward with. I guess the only right thing here
to say is if they knew they were going to
do it, and they're going to keep Joe Shane, which
they said they're going to, and then if you're going
(22:41):
to peel the band aid off, go ahead. But the
only thing it gets me pause is if Kafka comes
in and does okay, does he automatically get do they
do they do the search they way they could or should.
I'm not rooting against Kafka. I think he's a smart, young,
you know, former quarterback. But I thought it was a
month too early.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
Uh Gotlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio that is
the voice of Mark Dominic. He joins, us, I agree,
month too early, Like what what is the point? I mean?
I guess they want to give Kafka a good a
good run here, but yeah, it just strikes me as
odd in terms of in terms of the timing, Like
if you think Kafrika could be the head coach and
(23:20):
he's coached with you, he can still be the head coach,
Like that's not doesn't really change when you're running an
organization as a as an interim Denver's eight and two.
They welcome in Kansas City, but they really struggled offensively,
really struggled. How fixable is the quarterback situation there?
Speaker 8 (23:41):
I think it is fixable. I mean, you know, this
is a team that's over the last couple of weeks,
has certainly struggled. I mean it was you know, you
don't ever want to see only ten points against the Raiders.
You feel like that's a huge mistake. But if you
just take a couple and I know you've got Moni Kiffin,
our defensive coordinator in Tampa for years, we would always
have Monday morning the meetings after games, and you know,
it would be like what went right? What went wrong?
(24:01):
And minifieven always sy if we just went to give
it up that one ad R pass play, we'd have
had much better statistics and the coach done you ly,
But MANI we gave up that play, right, And so
you know, if you if you look at the Denver Broncos,
they put forty points on the board, they put thirty
points on the board. It's there. I think it can
be there. I think the running game is the thing
that's really been hard for them to kind of you know,
(24:23):
really find the consistency. Even though you know, obviously Dobbins
has carried the ball over one hundred fifty times, I
still feel confident. I think bow Knicks has played well.
I think you're looking for him to take strides as
the season goes along towards the end of the season.
He did that last year, and I think he'll do
that this year. You know, this is a good time
for them to have a buy. They come out and
they've got some road games, but they've got some winnable
(24:44):
games on this schedule of the next month with Washington,
the Raiders again in Jaguars. I think it's going to
put them in position where they're going to make the postseason.
I don't see them as being a jugger not in
the postseason. But you know, this offense I think will
come back and be more than twenty to twenty eight
points squaring team. And I think you'll that was right
when they come out of the Spy. It's a good
time for them after they get this Chiefs games out
of the way.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, why
were the Packers so conservative offensively against the Eagles?
Speaker 8 (25:15):
Yeah, I think they didn't want to beat themselves, Doug.
I think that was the big concern, is like how
do we not beat ourselves in this game instead of
like let's go be aggressive. And I think coach Lafloria
talked about that a little bit, and that's the way
I felt like. I felt they went in the game going, hey, look,
if we don't turn the ball over, we don't make mistakes,
we're gonna win this game. And instead it was too
conservative in my opinion, and that kind of cost him
the opportunity. I know, you know, Jordan Love didn't have
(25:37):
his best night by any stretch. You know the sacks
and you know the completion percentage. But I think that
was the main thing is I looked at the day,
we're going to run the ball, we're gonna not make mistakes,
and we're gonna win this game. But instead what happened was,
you know, they they got sacks, Jordan Love had the fumble.
I think they had two fumbles they gave. Jacobs had
the fumble also, right, So I think it was that
it was playing too safe, too casual. I think the
(25:58):
Packers are good enough offense where they got to push
and then other Tucker Craft's not there, But I feel
confident with the with the still with Luke Musgrave and
the group they have, they can still push the ball
down the field. I think you got to see them
do that.
Speaker 2 (26:10):
Okay, what about the Eagles, Like they won? Aj Brown
still upset and having been at the game, Like I understand,
like I'm a coach, right, Like I don't want to
hear any of any of complaining. We won the game
in Lambeau. But it doesn't take a blind man to
point out like they don't really utilize him. I don't really.
It's not like they're even using them as a decoy.
(26:32):
They're just kind of running an offense and trying to
win ugly, which has worked for them. They won a
Super Bowl, but in another super Bowl. I get it. Uh,
but he does have a little bit of a little
bit of a point. What are your thoughts on the
lack of utilization of AJ Brown?
Speaker 8 (26:47):
Yeah, you know he's inactive against the Giants, comes back
and only sees three targets before that. You know, I
know he complained a little bit when he looked back.
You know, you're still averaging eight to nine targets a
game and to me, Yeah, do you want as a receiver,
would you like that fourteen or fifteenth? Sure? But if
you're getting targeted consistently eight to ten times a game,
that should be what you're a chance to win a championship.
(27:08):
And you've got Smith on the other side, that should
be balanced that you were kind of looking for. I
expect them to look at A J. Brown this week
and see him more consistently in that way in terms
of you know, getting him the football, you know, making
sure that he's got the opportunity to see the ball
come to him at least eight to ten times, and
I would be shocked if they didn't. I think that
that's exactly what they'll want to do. I think we'll
(27:28):
see that against the Lions on Sunday night. And I
think that it's not because A J. Brown's complaining, it's
just that I think that's what they want to be.
They've shown it early in the season. I think they'll
show it again. They came out of that game against
the Giants he didn't address They slow rolled in against
you know the next week and three three targets. But
this week, I think you'll see the eight to ten
targets like we normally.
Speaker 2 (27:46):
Do Stug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay,
let's let's talk some Steelers football, shall we. I mean,
man Imard Bar the Chargers, and the Chargers are so
banged up, right, so banged up. But more than anything,
like Aaron Rodgers, it's not trending in the way of
(28:09):
being better. Can they get this thing to a reasonable
place like they there? Look there, Mike Tomlin's the master
of being you know, nine and eight right, nine and eight,
just above five hundred. But that's what it feels like.
This team is getting back towards and it was one
that went all in. Is there any fixing where they
(28:30):
are on this trend?
Speaker 8 (28:32):
It's it's number one for I think Aaron Rodgers finding
that number two receiver when you watch that game, you
saw it, you know, the ball just ricochet Ockett receiver's
hands that are wide open and they just can't make
the play. You know. Having metcalfs one thing, but having
somebody else that can really compliment him is really what's
s lacking in Pittsburgh. And yeah, that could have been
George Pickens and we'll see how that all plays out.
(28:53):
But I got to think Omar Kahn, Mike Tomlins this offseason.
That's got to be a number one important thing to do.
The thing is, you know, I like Warren, it just
doesn't feel like he's really the They're using him as
the number one back, but just doesn't feel like that's
a typical Steelers type of running back as well, and
he's good to catch the ball back, so I think
he's a good player. But those are the two things
(29:14):
where I think offensively, but I think mainly it's finding
the number two outlet for him and if it's not
a running back. John neu Smith I think played himself
in this contract, but I've never felt like he's uber
consistent across the board, and I think the Steelers are
seeing that, So I think that's really what it is.
You know, obviously the defense has been hot and cold,
and as they get to the quarterback that certainly changes everything.
(29:35):
And that's the other part is that I'm surprised where
the Steelers past rush is at this point of the season.
I would have expected it to be much stronger. I mean,
I know they've still got thirty two sacks, but I
really thought that, you know what would be around ten already.
I thought her Big would be at like eight or ten,
because I think he's a sending player that's going to
make up a ton of money in free agency for
somebody if he can't stay in Pittsburgh. So I thought
(29:55):
they'd still be getting out the quarterback more. But I
think it comes down to Aaron Rodgers trusting the you'll
set guys around him and making those plays against the Chargers.
They did not.
Speaker 7 (30:05):
That.
Speaker 2 (30:06):
That's the voice of reason. That's the voice of Mark
Dominic spent over twenty years in the NFL front office,
is form general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and
kind of have to join us on a weekly basis. Mark,

This is game time on the Doug gott lab Show.
Speaker 7 (31:03):
All right, Doug, the game today is Iowa.
Speaker 6 (31:08):
Sam is excited for question number two. But before we
get to question number two, let's get to question newmeroau Uno.
Adam Kaplan joins Kerrie Rhodes and I every Sunday on
End Zone Radio. Adam Kaplan joins the Doug Gottlieb Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Adam Kaplan has a circle
(31:28):
of trust in the NFL, the teams that he trusts.
That's where we start. Most trustworthy team right now, the
team that you believe in the most of the National
Football League. That's topic number one three two one go.
I got DIBs on they face my Seahawks this Sunday.
(31:53):
But it is the Rams. It's good pick quarterback, running back,
wide receivers, all of that, their defense playing at a
high level. I trust the Rams more than anybody right
now in the National Football League.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
I got DIBs. Can't say Chiefs. All right, They're starting
to play good gets and play good football. I know
they lost to the Bills two weeks ago. I got
it so it watched it. But Pat Mahomes, Andy Reid,
they'll figure it out. And I can't say.
Speaker 6 (32:20):
Chiefs still didn't deter you because they were on bye
last week.
Speaker 2 (32:24):
That was two weeks ago. My week's are you know,
I don't even know what date is.
Speaker 7 (32:27):
Okay, if they're on that they win in the bye week,
they do.
Speaker 6 (32:31):
Andy Reid off of a bye is as much of
a sure bet as you can get.
Speaker 7 (32:36):
But I mean just saying, being on the bye week,
you know you don't have to worry about you can
trust that their their's record won't change anyway. Uh Sam,
I'm gonna take I'll take DIBs on the Patriots themselves
winning eight straight. How about that first team nine wins? Pats, Jason,
do you trust anybody? And this is a twenty twenty
five question, right correctly? Yes, Yeah, I got on the Eagles. Wow,
(33:02):
I got deeeds on the Eagles.
Speaker 5 (33:04):
Deebs egos.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
I mean, honestly, that's that's probably a smarter pick. Even then.
The Chiefs, they got a good defense, they got a
good offense, they run the football, they won a Super
Bowl Like it's not pretty, it's not sexy, but it
wins games.
Speaker 7 (33:18):
Dan, Could I nothing sexy about trustworthy? By the way,
nothing sexy about that?
Speaker 2 (33:22):
You didn't clarify, honestly, No, I mean, like apparently women
like that's like a super sexy thing to them. It's
pretty sexy, but it makes you feel safe.
Speaker 7 (33:33):
It's way too sexy.
Speaker 2 (33:34):
Gotta feel safe.
Speaker 7 (33:35):
You didn't specify, Dan, Could I have picked a trustworthy
team to lose like the Titans, Like I trust that
you're going to lose.
Speaker 6 (33:42):
Yeah, that's a good spin on it, but that's not
what we were looking. That's why I brought up the
end And who knows they could win this week? Texans
coming to town Stroud, I don't know. Man Davis Mills
QBS favorite new kid on the block in college football. Yes,
this is what Sam has been so excited for. All right,
(34:04):
the countdown is on three to one.
Speaker 7 (34:08):
I got DIBs on Texas A and M having one
of their best seasons, their best season in more than
thirty years when I think RC Slocum was the coach.
Speaker 6 (34:19):
All right, that's a pretty good pick. Texas say and
them is off the board.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
I got DIBs, Thug, you have to it's got to
be a new kid on the block.
Speaker 6 (34:27):
Yeah, just kind of, you know, not a usual suspect.
Speaker 2 (34:31):
I got Gibbs on Indiana. All right, that's very Indiana.
We're in the playoff last year. Mendoza's I think an
upgrade at quarterback. But you know, they're really really good.
They're solid.
Speaker 7 (34:44):
They won't beat themselves, all right, anyone, bueler. I'm gonna
take Georgia Tech.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
Ah.
Speaker 6 (34:50):
Like Georgia Tech being in the in the thick of
it goes back to the early nineteen nineties.
Speaker 7 (34:58):
When they were up power.
Speaker 6 (35:00):
Remember Ken Swilling, Yes, them in Virginia, battling for supremacy
in the ACC. Georgia Tech Co National champions give me wreck, Yes.
Speaker 2 (35:14):
Yes you can get.
Speaker 7 (35:17):
Also a lot of new kids on the block this year.
Speaker 6 (35:19):
What were you going to say, Doug, I.
Speaker 2 (35:21):
Was gonna say, what was the name of the quarterback
when Georgia Tech won a co National championship? In my mind,
I got I'm not looking it up. I got Joe something.
Speaker 6 (35:31):
Joe Hamilton was the quarterback for a while, but I
don't think it was from that team.
Speaker 2 (35:38):
Wow, Joe Hamilton was the name most thinking.
Speaker 6 (35:40):
Yeah, I just know they had Ken Swilling, Pat Swilling
played linebacker for the Saints, but Georgia Tech had Ken Swilling.
Speaker 2 (35:48):
I always loved the fact that Calvin Johnson played there
and they ran the option, Like I'm sure I would
run the option if I had Calvin Johnson. All right,
I know he didn't play there. When they won the
National championship, I got it.
Speaker 6 (35:58):
But you know it was Bobby Ross led Georgia Tech team.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
Oh yeah, Boss Ross? All right? Then it was a
Super Bowl leading coach with the San Diego Chargers too.
Speaker 6 (36:12):
Yes, Lions after that. Best NBA story so far this season? Ready?
Three two one? How about Giannie Is I got DIBs
for all the talk about Giannis not being committed to
Milwaukee when he did show up and said I'm committed.
(36:34):
Now he's kind of been in blank U mode. Leads
the NBA in scoring right now. I don't know if
they have enough around him, but he's been on one
to start the season, so I'm going Giani's start to
the season taking pride in his work.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
I got DIBs and Lebron James not playing and then
playing all of a sudden once they start playing, well, like,
I'm back, I'm okay. The whole thing was just weird.
I'm not saying he didn't have a bad back, not
saying that, but there is a difference between hurt and injured,
and I do wonder how injured he was or was
(37:14):
it he was just no.
Speaker 6 (37:16):
He dug he was hurt in parentheses, feelings, yes, feelings.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
Right, right. So the story is what is going on
with Lebron? What's gonna happen with Lebron? I don't love
the drama, but I do think that in terms of stories,
that's the big one, that's the good one to me.
Speaker 6 (37:37):
Jason Sam anybody, I got nothing because I haven't watched
the lick of the NBA yet. It's okay, totally fine.
Let's move on to the last one. Then, Favorite rain gear.
It's pouring in southern California. Favorite rain gear three two one.
Speaker 7 (37:51):
I got DIBs on the doc style trench coat that
was made popular in the movie I Know What You
did last summer. I have a cheap one. It's full
of holes, but it looks very intimidated and does a job.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
I'm going with hoodie hoodie better than umbrella. Hoodie.
Speaker 6 (38:08):
Give me an umbrella.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (38:10):
I got DIBs on boots rain boots on women.
Speaker 6 (38:13):
Mm hmmm, that's game time.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
By the way, remember when it was just rain. Now
it's an atmospheric river. Get your singing voices ready to gamblers.
