Speaker 2 (00:18):
Hey, what up with you?
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio Coming to you from
the Tyraq dot Com studios.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Tyraq dot com. We'll we get there.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Unmatched selection, fast free shipping, free road has protection over
ten thousand recommend installers. Tyraq dot com Sway Tire Buying
should be Hey, welcome in. So I thought we could
do something kind of cool here. Okay, So my intent
(00:49):
with this radio show while coaching college basketball is I
don't ever want to force it to be about something
that it's not. Okay, don't Because I live in Green
Bay and we have the NFL Draft upcoming in Green Bay,
I think naturally, as we're gonna be broadcasting live from
the kind of the draft area, kind of compound area,
(01:12):
I think all of that stuff makes sense once we
get to what is that The week of April twenty
first and leading up to it and we can talk
about it. It's very unique, and when I can correlate
things going on in our basketball program to things going
on and the rest of the sports, great. But I
don't want to force it, right, We're not going to
force things that don't make sense. But we're on the
(01:33):
second day of the portal being officially open and college
basketball's season. It's still not at its crescendo, right. We
got the Sweet Sixteen followed by the Final Four. But
the guys, just like so many of my friends, are
texting me about the portal and about what this time
(01:53):
of year, what it's actually like. So I thought, why
the heck would I not use my experience as a
resource for people to find out about something that everyone
talks about but very few people know about.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Right. Is that a fair depiction of it? Right? So
I think we should play a little ask the coach.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
There's a question that needs an answer.
Speaker 1 (02:20):
And the answer is if only there was someone with
the authority and the wisdom to give us that answer.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
No, he coach, I get to set the schedule.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Hold on, let's ask the coach.
Speaker 1 (02:31):
Okay, So remember the wisdom is a big thing. I
am also again and I'm I'm like that, maybe it's
a mistake. But I tell everybody, like, look, I'm learning
as I go.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
I never walk into a room like I know everything.
Dan knows everything. Okay, Like Dan, we always go to
Dan because Dan actually studies. He's the guy who we
always like, you know, we cheat up his paper a
little bit in school. Great job, Yes, thank you Dan.
Who's got the first question for the coach?
Speaker 4 (02:57):
I got one. I go Onell Jason Stewart Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Yeah, Jason, go ahead, Doug.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
What what is the most challenging part of the transfer portal?
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Oh, trying to figure out where you stand, you know,
because because the portal is open to enter in the
portal anytime over the next thirty days. So we've had
a couple of players who very early on since we
got done.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
Said hey, I'm going to the portal. We knew it's good.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
I've had a couple discussions with a couple more kids
when they got back from spring break who.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Said, hey, I'm going into the portal.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
I say that because, you know, I got a pretty
good heads up on everything within my own program. But
knowing when you talk to one of these kids, it's like, Okay,
he wants to visit. Well, now they have unlimited visits
so they can visit as many schools as they want.
So previously there used to be five visits. You can
(03:56):
only visit five places if they're visiting when you're like, oh,
we're in pretty good shape. Now there's unlimited visits. So
it's like where do we really stand? I think finding
where you really stand with people is the hardest thing
or the most challenging thing with your own players and
with potential incoming players.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Oh we got one, we got one in the back.
Is that yeah? We got yes?
Speaker 5 (04:19):
Next question Dan Byer Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
The question that I have is do you refresh the
portal daily or to get updates? Like obviously you speak
with your players, but to find out who else is
out there?
Speaker 6 (04:35):
How do you go about doing that?
Speaker 1 (04:37):
Okay, so I'm going to Now I'm going to share
some industry secrets. You ready, So all of the big
agencies and then even all the mom and pops, they
have lists that have been circulating for probably about a
month and a half of guys that have either said
they're going in the portal or talk with some representation
(05:00):
or there's a pretty good sense. It doesn't mean every
one of those guys are going into the portal, but
what it does is it allows you to kind of
pre plan for if this guy goes in these here's
the representation, here's the avenue.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Whatever.
Speaker 1 (05:16):
We use an analytics company, it's called HDI. I'll give
them some pub because what they can do is for
our specific desires, and one of the things that we
want to do is we want to at least evaluate,
if not recruit. They write kids at our level who
are from here. From here meaning Wisconsin, maybe a little
(05:37):
bit Illinois, maybe a little bit in New Minnesota. Because again,
we feel like the way that we can separate ourselves
is there's only four Division on schools in the state,
and you know, two of them are high majors, and
we feel like we can separate ourselves by hey, come
on home, and and we think there's lots of players
(05:59):
at our life. So the point is that, yes, we
do refresh it. It is one of my coaches. It's
in their office. He has the laptop open and you're
constantly like refreshing, like ooh, look who just went in
and there's actually a rating system on some of these
sites as to who's the highest rated player currently in
the in the portal. We also use our analysts company
(06:20):
to know when it's updated players again that are from
our area or have a couple of attributes that we're
looking for. And you can do anything you can do
based upon height, you know, reach, you can do based
upon three point shooting percentage, assistant turn over ratio, rebound rate,
whatever you want, and literally it can kind of handpick guys.
The great thing about the pre Portal or Dark Portal
(06:42):
and all those lists is you don't reach out to
those guys, you don't tamper. It doesn't really do you
any good to tamper anyway. For the most part, right
it's like all it's going to do is make you
look bad. But what it does is it can prepare
you so that when a kid gets into the portal,
you can be you want to be one of the
first to say, hey, we actually know who you are,
(07:02):
we know where you're from, We talk to your people,
and we think you'd be a good fit.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
And here's why.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
So yes, we keep the portal website always open, and
our analytics company is constantly updating us and we do
so so that guys that we've kind of pre planned for,
especially ones that are from the state of Wisconsin, maybe
from Illinois, or have some tie to one of our coaches, whatever,
the second that they go in, we feel like we
can not only reach out, but we're also prepared for
(07:31):
reaching out. We don't just when they go, hey, what
do you think about my game? We've actually watched them play,
so there's a lot a lot of video that you're
watching as you go.
Speaker 7 (07:39):
Next question, Next question, coach gott Leiba Sam Kinsley here
from the Des Moines Dispatch Gazette Sunday Times. I want
you to elaborate and expound more on just kind of
dealing with what's your protocol for dealing with like representation.
Do you guys players individually contact you you get I'm
(08:00):
sure like family members, you get agents, like, tell me
more about that, and how do you kind of how
do you put those round pieces into square holes?
Speaker 1 (08:10):
I guess okay, so I have a very good working
relationship with a couple of the top agents in the field.
And look, just because some guys are not like the
they have. You know, there's a guy in Detroit who's like,
he's he's young, he's starting out, but he's got some
good players.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
And generally, you know, I give them a sense of.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Where we are budget wise, what type of kid we're
thinking of, and then we usually talk about about players
and you know, what we're looking for or whatever. I
talk with agents. Some of it's with AU coaches. Hey,
I got a kid. A lot of people, some of
(08:53):
the most powerful people in the country right now are
junior college coaches. Here's why junior college. If you went
to junior college during any time in the last four
or five years, you're going to get that year back.
And so it's not just that you don't necessarily want
to recruit junior college kids this year because junior college
kids that come out this year they're considered freshmen.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
But what you want is, hey.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
This kid played for me four years ago or three
years ago in junior college, which means he'll have another
year left to play. So you call the junior college
coaches and say, hey, who do you have, Who did
you coach Who's going to be in the portal that
fits what we need. So the answer is, do we
talk to parents, yes, do we talk to family members yes,
do we talk to AAU member coach. Yes, do we
(09:38):
talk to high school coaches. Yes, there's a kid who
got in the portal yesterday we had been preparing for
because he's a position of need. And you know, I
talked to his high school coach, his former high school assistant,
his AAU coach, and everybody, you know, so that I
knew who I was talking to, I knew what kind
(09:58):
of kid. The other part is like, you just don't
want kids with issues like we're not. It's just we're
not at the point where it's worth it to take
kids with major issues. So we just want kids that
want to come play basketball and get better and hang
out with some good dudes. So yes, you talk to
all of them, say I'm believed or not. I mean,
(10:18):
you know, it's interesting. I had a couple other non
basketball phone calls to make, and I just sent a
text like sometime yesterday like Hey, I'm just gonna apologize
because this is literally the moment I wake up to
the moment I go to sleep. Outside of doing the
radio show and researching for the radio show, this is
what I'm doing. I'm building my roster, both with my
(10:39):
guys that I have because some of them are like yeah.
You know, it turns out I really want to stay
and some of them are guys I want to leave,
and I get it, and you know, like, look, part
of it is also like I want to have open,
honest conversations even with the players who want to stay.
And the reason is, you know, some of those guys
like your role may have been bigger this year and
then it will be next year because we have to
(11:00):
get older, we have to get better. It doesn't mean
I'm kicking you off the team. It just means that
you're going to have to compete to even get back
to where you have been over the past three months
because we have to be demonstratively better. So the point
is that do we talk to The answer is yes,
we talked to everybody, and you have to be open.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
I had a talk with the assistant coach.
Speaker 1 (11:21):
You know, lots of people you push back on having
an agent, and you say, like, well why do you
guys like, look, if they've signed a deal with an agent,
that's done. So all you got to do is, hey,
let's make the basketball conversation about basketball, and the money conversation.
We'll deal with the agents. And I actually like that
because that's how I've always done in broadcasting. I've never
talked money one time with a boss when I've been
(11:43):
approached for jobs, or even when I was at ESPN
i resigned several times over, or I was at Fox
and I resigned several times over. I've never ever talked
money with the boss. That's what do I have an
agent for. That's their job. You guys handle the money
so it doesn't get itchy between me and my boss.
Speaker 7 (11:59):
Well, that certainly sounds a little messy and open ended,
but I guess that's the way.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
They're doing so well.
Speaker 7 (12:05):
Just the whole whole thing now with the transfer, bole
is just open and messy and just wide open. It's like, uh,
tread and water in the ocean with all you know.
You got guys staying, you got guys going, You got
guys coming in.
Speaker 6 (12:15):
When to contact them? When not to?
Speaker 2 (12:18):
You can't contact him until they're in the portal. Yes,
there's there's there's, coach.
Speaker 7 (12:22):
I just hope you have unlimited texting and calling on
your cell phones.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
I do have unlimited texting calling.
Speaker 6 (12:27):
All right, did you log anybody the minutes?
Speaker 3 (12:29):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (12:30):
Everybody has I don't remember. While since the latitude for
follow up questions. This is way too latitude, but just
me and.
Speaker 6 (12:36):
The coach having a conversation round you.
Speaker 7 (12:38):
Did you just kind of editorialized like your answer obviously,
so he.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
Created his own answer like it's a mess, Like I didn't.
Did I ever say it was a mess?
Speaker 6 (12:47):
No, I just it's the way I'm interpreting. It's very.
Speaker 7 (12:50):
It's very it's just so much wider in scope now
than it ever was.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
We can get this back on track, Dan Barr A question.
Speaker 5 (12:58):
I just, I just I was surprised that gave you
more of a coach Could you talk about sort of question?
That's and I think that's what he provided.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
It's disappointing. Disappointing.
Speaker 7 (13:08):
Well, we got a lot of information out there from
the from the there's no such thing of stupid questions department.
Once you entered the transfer portal, could you go back
to the school?
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Well, it depends on the school, depends on the school,
you know, again, depends on the school, depends on the kid,
depends on the relationship with the coach. But the answer
is you can, but you they don't have to take
you back.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
I would be I would have a tough time if
I was a coach having my emotions not getting in
the way. If I just found out a kid put
his name in and then being like, oh and now
you want to come back, sorry, I would have a
tough time taking a kid back if he just jumped in.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
Yeah, that's awkward.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
It's very it's very awkward.
Speaker 1 (13:54):
Some some schools say, hey, you can't use our facility anymore,
but it is completely up to the coach's choice. What
I have chosen to do is you can use the facility.
We're not turning off your card, but you can't use
the locker room and you can't get into our our workouts.
(14:16):
So are the guys play pickup basketball after the workouts?
And I don't know, you know the number of guys
who are on campus that are in the portal, because again,
all the guys that are not in the portal that
are on campus, we check in with them every day
and we see them has come to workouts and they
come through the office whenever the other guys do not.
But I'm not doing this like hey, you're not welcome here,
(14:37):
Like you know, there's a reason that there's there's a
very reasonable reason why all of them. Though I don't
agree with two of my guys that are that are
leaving and why they're leaving. But again they're allowed to
and I'm I'm gonna help them. I'm just different than
some people. I don't know how it works for everybody.
Some guys get super bitter, some guys do not. Some
(15:00):
guys come and they're just like, hey, get rid of everybody.
I've had several coaches say like, just get it to everybody,
start over. I'm like, I don't think we win here
that way. I think we win here with the guys
that were in the fight, that kept fighting through the
losing streak, that want to get better understanding. The rule
may change for the lesser next year, but they're all
All they want to do is win, and those guys
(15:21):
we want to keep.
Speaker 2 (15:22):
Those guys are glue. Any other ones? Ok No, I'm
the head coach.
Speaker 6 (15:30):
I get to set the schedule.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
Hold on, let's ask the coach you got one more?
Speaker 2 (15:35):
Or is that is that it?
Speaker 8 (15:36):
Now?
Speaker 2 (15:36):
That's the cap or Okay.

Stug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. Our good
frand friend for Scilla from ESPN. He's in Stillwater tonight
for North Texas take on Oklahoma State in the in
the NIT quarterfinals. I believe of the NIT and Fran,
thanks so much for taking time.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
I do got to ask you doing the n T.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
Considering the transfer portal is open, what's the NIT like
in comparison to nits of the past.
Speaker 8 (16:50):
Well, keep in mind it's an evolving situation. Doug in
the old days like two years ago, three years ago. Yeah,
the n it was fun for me and it still
is by the way. You know. You know me, man,
if there's like twelve scare, if there's twelve squirrels playing
bad pick up basketball and on a playground, I'm going
(17:10):
to be excited about it. But truthfully, you know, no
trip to New York, but you do get to go
to Hinkle. You got the Crown deal with Fox which
is coming up in a week. I think they're offering
prize money the teams that we've done and we're going
to see your former your alma mater, Oklahoma State play
North Texas team tonight. Twenty two new players since the
(17:35):
end of last season that have had to been integrated
to these two teams. And you know, like Russ Hodge,
the coach of North Texas said, he said to the guys, fellas,
your careers are almost over. Just enjoy playing because you're
gonna wish five and ten years from now that you
look back on your career. You know this because you
(17:56):
played and you had such a good career. But yeah,
we're treating it with there's a lot of and I'm
sure I would say this to you, Doug, and you
coached this year, that last month of the regular season
for every team at every level in Division one, the
kids are fragile. They don't know if they're coming back.
They don't know if they're going to get a raise,
or they shoot more because the coach might not renew
(18:16):
his nil deal. It's a it's a crazy time because
mentally these kids are a little bit fried. But we're
lucky enough to, you know, be around some kids that,
at least from the outside looking in, look like they're
enjoying plan.
Speaker 2 (18:29):
Yeah, they and they care.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
It's it's yeah, NT has always been, you know, until
you got to Madison Square gardener.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Now until you get the ankle, do you care? If
you don't care, then you usually go home.
Speaker 8 (18:39):
That's right, go home, that's right. No question.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Is Hodge going to be the head coach of North
Texas next year or will he?
Speaker 8 (18:46):
I didn't ask him, Well, I didn't ask him, but
I would put it this way. The last two guys
that left the American Graham McCaslin and Dusty may have
both done pretty good. This guy's an excellent coach. He's
a lot like Grant. I've gotten to know him through
the years because he's a Texas guy, and I think
(19:06):
West Virginia could probably do worst than Ross Hodge. Now
I'll say this, I did not get to know Darian
Debries very well. I never got the feeling that he
was going to be their long term I really didn't.
And what but what made me feel bad about it is,
you know, Doug, you have you did you ever play
at West Virginia when you were at Oklahoma State?
Speaker 2 (19:28):
No?
Speaker 1 (19:28):
No, when as a Notre Dame Welay, we played him,
but we only played him at home. They were in the
Big Eastern game.
Speaker 8 (19:33):
You know what. It's an incredible place because.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
You know, Jordan was my staff by the way, he
played there, obviously of course he did.
Speaker 8 (19:40):
Yeah. Well, it's not Listen, it's not Miami Beach, it's
not Chicago. It's rural America. But they love their team,
the state. It's the state's pro team. They have great facilities.
Unless you play, unless you're made to play Tuesday night
at nine pm on ESPN. They usually have great crowds,
(20:01):
a big twelve. Whoever gets this job and embraces the
state I think could have a lot of success. And
apparently they have an il money, which, as you know
right now, trumps everything else, you know, including facilities and
all the other stuff.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Yeah, it's so it's funny, like my bracket on Fox
Sports Radio is doing really well. Why I just picked
the teams that had the most money and he right,
I mean, this is not that hard to track. And
you know, it's interesting, you know, people acting like mcniee
was an upset, Like not sure it was an upset. Actually, yeah,
(20:36):
considering how well how well funded that program is. Okay,
So look, you you coached at a bunch of these
from Saint John's New Mexico to Manhattan, all the different levels.
Speaker 8 (20:46):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
Yeah, and now you've covered it for for twenty years.
What's your sense of what's your sense of the space.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
That we're in.
Speaker 8 (20:57):
Well, listen, there are my the short I talked hort
to make as short as possible, obviously name image and
likeness and the kids partaking in some of the riches
if you will is good. Okay, being able to have
some freedom to transfer if you're in a bad situation
(21:18):
is good. What we have right now is complete and
utter chaos. And for all the people who've been railing
about the NCAA forever. I believe in some way. I
don't know what the unintended consequences are going to be,
but I do think ultimately it's going to be detrimental
for the sport. In this regard Mike football, there'll be
(21:41):
twenty five to maybe a little more fifty high level
basketball programs, and even some of the low level power
conference teams are going to be left by the wayside.
And everything else that's magical about college basketball, March Madness, Cinderella's,
you know, upsets, things of that nature, they're all going
out the window. What we have right now at the
(22:02):
top level of basketball and college is it's basically semi professional.
It's probably more professional than even the G League. And
I know something about the G League since I have
a son coaching there right now. Likely it's bad.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
It's yeah, what I tell I turned called it was,
it's professional in pay only, but its amateur hower in
terms of some of the behind the scenes stuff.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
Is that fair?
Speaker 8 (22:24):
I agree? Oh yeah, oh yeah, no, we a you know,
no question about it. In fact, you know, like one
of my problems is I realized that some of these kids,
you know, if you look at Zion or you know,
Cooper Flag or some of these great college players. If
they hit the nil jackpod, good for them. Okay, but
there was a kid at SMU this year that he
(22:45):
just attended his eighth school in nine years high school
in college. I'm not I'm not going to mention his name.
You can look it up right and he's he was
a good high mid major player. He had. He had
a decent year at SMU. That kid shouldn't be making
exponentially more than some assistant coach has been doing this
for twenty five years. I'm sorry, he shouldn't be making
(23:07):
triple or four times? What a you know, what a
what a guy? I don't want to hear about. Well,
coaches can leave anytime they want. There's buyouts in your
contract for a reason. In college West Virginia just got
at least three million dollars from Indiana for the buyout.
I'm a believer in a CBA for college basketball and
football players that doesn't make them professionals, but does have
(23:30):
But there is a collective bargaining agreement that hopefully we
can all agree on, and you could put buyouts in it.
You can, you could make that guaranteed deals, you know,
because my NBA friends say this. Can you imagine if
the NBA had unlimited free agency every single season?
Speaker 1 (23:49):
Yeah, people say out that, well, it's just like in
the NBA, like, no, it's not the NBA multi year contracts.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
There's no, You're not a free agent every year.
Speaker 1 (23:57):
That's it's yeah, that part, that part is is ridiculous,
completely ridiculous. I have so I have some off air
stories for you that can that will I will.
Speaker 8 (24:09):
Hey, listen, I'm hearing them. In the last three hours,
I was just with Jeremy Cox, you know Jeremy Well, sure,
it's just to coach at Oklahoma State. This guy has
been at every level. He was a longtime great juco coach.
And he told me even in the first twenty four
hours of the portal that some kids have already shut
it down because they've actually been recruited all year. And
(24:31):
Kevin Willard had the best line of all. In mid December,
someone asked him about the transfer portal in March, and
he said, the transfer portal opened on November fifth, the
opening night of the season, because the first kid that
plays eight minutes in the first game is calling home
or the agent or the AAU guy and saying get
me out of here. And what we're missing again, Listen,
(24:54):
we notice some good things about nil and transferring, but
what we're missing is kids fighting tough adversity. You got
coached hard by a hall of Fame coach.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
You know.
Speaker 8 (25:05):
I'm sure there were days you went back to your
dorm because you probably didn't live in an apartment. Then
maybe you did, but my point is like there were
probably days where you probably despised that he sudden because he,
you know, raked you over the coals, and big deal,
he made you better.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
No, listen, let me let me tell you that real honesty. Okay,
are you in Galla Grabber right now?
Speaker 8 (25:23):
No, I'm in I'm a I'm at the beautiful home
to suites so on a Hall of Fame avenue.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
They didn't put you on campus.
Speaker 8 (25:30):
Okay, party Adverton, Come on the Atherton's like one hundred
and fifty bucks. You can't I get it. I didn't
get a Hall of Fame sweep for one or nine?
Speaker 1 (25:37):
Come on, man, okay, so so uh so the old arena,
which is they built the new arena like over the
top of it, right at it. Whatever you get kicked out,
you get kicked out of practice, and coach, go get
out of here, just get out of here. So you'd,
you know, a lot of times you would stop and
not even you know, not even you know.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
You just literally walk out of there. I would walk
out of the arena, okay, in.
Speaker 1 (26:03):
My gear and just because I lived down the street
from for a while, from down Elm Street, uh, just
across duck from Meskimo Joe's. And you'd be walking and
tell and what he would tell you would be like,
you can't you already transferred yourbody transfers twice. You know
you want to go home to California, goodbye. You know,
(26:24):
basically your college runner is over and so and I
understand that on the outside looking in, it feels like
that maybe bullying or forcing a kid. But at some
point you need that, at some point you need the
tough love. Some point you need to grow up and
decide this is where what I've chosen to do, and
I'm going to fulfill that and I'm gonna I'm gonna
(26:45):
get through it. And we we have eliminated that on
on a on a multitude level, So where you are broadcast,
I've experienced that completely Okay, so let me let me
ask you about the teams that are still competing. Obviously the
SEC you and I know they have all the money. Oh,
let me let me show with Kansas what the heck
went wrong there?
Speaker 8 (27:06):
You know, yeah, I think I go ahead, Bill self,
Bill self knows many you know what they went over
two in the portal last two years. I mean, one
thing about Bill, he's honest. He's going to tell you
what he thinks. And you know, like I don't know
if it was bad evaluations or certainly bad valuations because
they paid some guys a lot of money. But you know, honestly, Doug,
you've got to treat the transfer portal like you and
(27:28):
I both know the NBA scouts who do this, well,
you know, background information. Do you look at how the
kid did against Power five? You know, let's say you're
taking a kid from the Mid American Conference. Okay, Well
he played seven games against Power five teams in four years,
three years, and he averaged and you know, in in
MAC play he was eighteen a game, but when he
played the five or seven Power five teams, he averaged nine.
(27:50):
You know, like, there's not enough thought as to I
call it this I think this is these are the keys,
and you're still coaching, so you can tell they tell
your staff this. It's a valuation. It's valuation and it's chemistry.
You know. You evaluate whether a guy can fit in
with your team style, you know, etc. Then you put
a valuation on him. Can we afford him? How much
(28:11):
would it cost for us to give him a di
anil deal? And then the third thing, and probably as importantly,
how will he fit in. I'll tell you a kid.
I fell in love with him because you might ask
me about him, but I love Caleb Love. Okay. I
went in with an open I know we're talking Arizona.
You know I went in with an open mind this
year at all. I heard all the negative stories. I
(28:32):
asked every single person that I know at Arizona, which
is basically almost everybody, and I said, come on, man,
don't lie to me. Tell me about him. Oh, he's
the most popular guy on the team. Players love him,
coaches love him. Tommy Lloyd said he hasn't given him
one ounce of trouble. We know he was a tough
shot taker for a couple of years and even at
(28:53):
times this year, but the kid plays it plays his
heart out man, and you know, he got the raw
deal at Carolina, like they seem like they blamed him
for all the lack of success, and he's at Arizona
on the cusp of maybe you know, that's a veteran
Arizona team that's gotten better since they lost the Duke
early in the year. I think that's a trouble, a
(29:15):
troubling game for Duke. Uh, certainly not the kind of
game that everybody thinks. I don't think it's going to
be a blowout. I think it's going to be a
nail bier.
Speaker 1 (29:24):
Okay, there's you know somehow cal got this thing going
at the right time.
Speaker 2 (29:31):
What's the like that Arkansas in advance?
Speaker 8 (29:34):
Oh, I think it's good. I mean, seriously, you know
on paper Listen, I'm a Texas tech fan. You know,
Graham McCaslin has done an amazing job. They've hit the
portal perfectly. They have the resources to do it. They
got great resources at Tech Doug. You know, the lot
of a lot of money in West Texas. Trust me,
And don't they no longer have to cheat? Okay, yeah, no,
(29:55):
they can do it.
Speaker 2 (29:56):
I got it. No.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
I've told people all the time, like you can win
a national championship. Texas Tech because of the amount of
money they have, the sport that they have.
Speaker 8 (30:03):
My wife says it best. She's an old SMU girl.
Nil Now it's legal, okay, And but but you know,
it's a it's a tremendous team. But I love Arkansas
at the moment because they're they're more athletic than Texas
Tech is. Those two big guys inside are playing great.
You know, Boogie's back. They've been playing well down the
(30:25):
stretch of the season, and I think that's a very
Now every team and left in this Sweet sixteen. The
one good thing about all Power Conference teams is every
almost every single team here you can say to yourself, yeah,
they can get to the Final four. And certainly all
four of those teams in that region, including Florida obviously
the favorite out of that region. But I like what
(30:45):
Arkansas is doing. They're they're extremely athletic, and they're playing
well at the right time.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
You are.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
You've been mister Big twelve for the last twenty years,
and Houston's come back, come into the league and what
they've done is things short of remarkable. Yeah, in the past,
it was, Hey, they can't score, right, they just you
would get they can't score, then you watch him outscore Gonzaga.
(31:12):
It's the team that that can score better. They do
have some you know backcourt when healthy that can really score. Yes,
where is Houston against the field.
Speaker 8 (31:23):
They're playing three road games this weekend. I mean, whoever,
you know, They've got to beat Purdue in Lucas Oil,
which you know Kelvin will say it doesn't matter, and
maybe he really feels that way. But I think that's
gonna be a you know, a street fight because of
the home crowd. You know, produce sixty five miles north.
You know, everybody talks about Braden Smith, you know, great year,
(31:45):
probably a first team All American, but Kaufman Wren is
a guy that could give them trouble inside. I think
I think Houston should prevail, but I see that going
down the wire like a five point game or in
that neighborhood and then whoever, you know, whoever wins the
Kentucky Tennessee game. I have a hard time thinking Kentucky
could be Tennessee. Three times. My heart's with Tennessee because
(32:06):
I've worked for Rick Barnes, as you know. But I
mean whoever plays Uston on Sunday is going to have
a great home court advantage because you know that whether
it's Tennessee or Kentucky, those people are going to travel.
And so I think I think Houston's got a brutal
bracket for being a one seed. And can they win
the bracket? Absolutely, because you mentioned they got, in addition
(32:30):
to depth health, a Hall of Fame coach, the defense,
to length, the shot blocking. They can really shoot it.
And I've been impressed with LJ. Cryer going from like
the back of the bus, as Kelvin would say. You
know when I say back of the bus, now, I
mean you know the guy that just hangs out in
the back right and with the buddies and joking around
to no, no, no, you're up here in the front
(32:51):
with me and the coaches because you're you're our team leader.
LJ has really kind of figured that role out and
is he can go get his own shot, Doug with
the clock going down, which he couldn't do probably earlier
in his career.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
For any of the best enjoy still water. Do all
those guys, I said, hi, and we'll catch up soon.

Speaker 3 (33:40):
Some have remorse.
Speaker 5 (33:41):
I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior.
Speaker 9 (33:46):
I engage them, but there's nothing quite like buyer's remorse.
Speaker 2 (33:52):
All right, Dan, what are your remorseful for?
Speaker 5 (33:53):
I'm doing this today because I made to do it
next week as well, Doug. When I first filled out
my bracket, I went through it and made all of
my choices, and I had ole miss in the final
four of my original bracket. And I'm telling you right
now the reason why I had them is because of
how I thought things set up for them.
Speaker 6 (34:14):
I know you know Chris Beard very well.
Speaker 5 (34:17):
I feel that this team could have made a run
in the tournament, but I talked myself out of it
by saying, you know what, this team's going to be
an underdog pretty much in every game they play, and
then it was every game because they actually were an
underdog to North Carolina. They beat them, They beat Iowa State,
who we know is dinged up. Now they're playing a
Michigan State team that I don't know how great they are,
(34:37):
but I think it could be a really good game
on Friday. And then you either get Michigan who would
upset Auburn, or you get a conference rematch with Auburn,
who was beaten Old Miss every time they played this season,
but the last time was a lot closer. So I
have remorse that I didn't stick with my original bracket,
having Ole Miss in the final four.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
I wouldn't you trust yourself, trust your.
Speaker 6 (35:02):
Gut, absolutely absolutely.
Speaker 2 (35:05):
Your trust your instinct.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Uh yeah, I'll credit Chris Peard. Okay, So before I
got this job, one of the things I would do
is I would help guys find players in the portal guys.
I knew Shanpadula played at Memorial High School that's actually
the high school my son Hays goes to, and I'd
seen Sean play at at Virginia Tech. And when I was,
(35:29):
you know, helping out Oaklahama State. I mean, I just said, like,
how did you guys miss on this guy? He's awesome
and you know, of all the guys he looked at
in the portal, like Padula was his number one guy,
and we were on three way texts and trying to
get Sean to go to Ole miss And you know,
it's one of the things I learned in recruiting. It's like, hey,
paint the picture for exactly how it's going to be,
(35:51):
and the closer you can get to it, the more
now unlikely are you to get that player, but you're
going to get more players in the future. He painted
a picture to Shampadula which was completes like, you're going
to be our point guard. I think you're gonna average
fifteen a game, probably fifteen right around three or four
assists a game. You'll play about thirty three minute thirty
two to thirty three minutes a game. And if we
have you, we got a chance will be a second
(36:13):
weekend team with a chance to get to the Final four.
And I don't know if you've looked, but he averaged
fifteen a game, thirty three minutes a game, three and
a half, assist a game three and a half rebounds
a game forty four eighty two thirty nine or his numbers,
and or forty four thirty nine eighty two or his numbers.
And yeah, they're in the sweets six team with a
chance to go to the Final four.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Crazy.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
Yeah, the bracket sets up should be interesting and they
should have a bunch of fans in Atlanta coming up
on Sunday. Oh yeah, on Friday, and then hopefully for
them on Sunday. That is my buyer's remorse. All right, quick,
just a couple of headlines Doug with the press. Stanford
(36:56):
is in the news.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
So what did he actually do that's considered harassment? That
that's what I that's the ambiguity to it, is like
harassment on it because you know, the the machismo guys like, yeah,
it's probably nothing northern California. They overreacted, whereas the other
person's like, well, well hold on, like what it's just
such a vague term. But Stanford fires their football coach
(37:19):
like a couple of weeks after review for harassment of
female Stafford.
Speaker 6 (37:24):
And we don't have time to get into it.
Speaker 5 (37:26):
Unfortunately, But what we can say is the timing is
unique because these investigations had already happened the second one
wrapped up last summer. It's when this became public. Is
now when Stanford made the move yea, and that now has.
Speaker 1 (37:38):
People Yeah, of course that's embarrassing, like, wait, you made
a decision to stick with him, and now when it
comes you can't take the public heat.
Speaker 2 (37:45):
But that's that's people's problem. That's that's the problem.
Speaker 1 (37:48):
Like if you made a decision to stick with you
made decision to stick with him. I don't I don't
understand it all right, back tomorrow on The Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio,
