the Vikings coming in on Saturday. We'll talk about that.
I'm coming in about fifteen minutes. Then Jim Daniel Jeremiah
will join us and God talks some bolts, shall we

(01:10):
some bolts, some upcoming quarterback class and a huge NFL
weekend including tonight as the Packers take on the Lions.
Packers take on the Lions. We got to we've got
a metric time to get to and uh let's uh,
let's let's get after it. Ever we do this every Thursday.
It's look, we all have like fantasies, right, I mean,

(01:33):
I want to be a college basketball coach. I am one.
I think Jason Stewart really wants to be in a
morning FM radio host and uh he likes to start
by talking about sports, but usually devolves into other stuff.
We call it. Don't call it a comeback Thursday.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Don't call it a throwback Thursday.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
Thank you, Doug. I'll take it from here. What is
it seventeen years? Has it already been seventeen years? My goodness?
As time flies, it's crazy, seventeen years ago this week?

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Can you believe it's December already? It's incredible. Before you
know it, it's going to be twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
I mean I just started writing twenty twenty four of
my checks.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Hey guys, Brett fav was in the midst of his
final season with the Packers two thousand and seven. Kind
of gets your mind in that time frame. Okay, last
season as a Packer. The Packers were ten to one
as they played the Lions on Thanksgiving. Brett fare had

(02:45):
one of the games of his career. He really did,
put up three hundred and eighty one yards three touchdowns.
Donald Driver caught ten passes for one hundred and forty
seven yards. Remember a running back name Iron Grant had
one hundred yards on the ground. The Lions were led
by John Kittna that day. Old John Kittna. Rod Marinelli

(03:09):
was their head coach. They weren't very good. They were
about five hundred. But anyways, Brett Farr's final season, and
of course we all knew what happened at the end
of that season.

Speaker 4 (03:18):
Dan certainly does.

Speaker 5 (03:19):
Do you remember Dan at the end of the two
thousand and seven season, of course, yes, that's when the
Patriots were beaten by the Giants at Super Bowl forty two.
And those Giants.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Also the Metrodome collapsed the roof.

Speaker 5 (03:36):
Which one are you looking for, Jason, the Metrodome or
are we looking for the Super.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Bowl kind of looking for the great at one of
the greatest upsets in the history of sports. But the
Metrodome is a close second before we get to roofs
caving in. I do those Giants they went into Lambeau
on a frigid day. I believe the Packers finished thirteen
and three.

Speaker 5 (03:56):
Again, yes, yes, again, a game that happened in and eight,
but yes, go ahead.

Speaker 6 (04:01):
Really oh yes, but don't we always describe the year
the two thousand and seven.

Speaker 4 (04:06):
Sam, I'm keeping the streak alive. I can't seem to
get this down.

Speaker 6 (04:09):
Yes, but that is the Giants team that went on
to upset that Patriots team, So I am I'm correct, right,
that is correct?

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Right?

Speaker 6 (04:18):
But remember the year. It was a year before though
that the Packers were just terrible. Their running back was
Sam con Gatto.

Speaker 1 (04:25):
I do remember that, Sam Conto.

Speaker 6 (04:27):
I think they were like four and twelve, so that
eight and eight okay, Oh, not as bad as I
must have my years off.

Speaker 5 (04:35):
That's hey, Jason only sent a text two hours ago.
It's right, it's a prep for it.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Anyway, was two thousand and seven? Again, I believe now
I understand it's a two thousand and six season. But
that was the Fiesta Bowl that had Boise beating Oklahoma
in overtime, which had a succession of craziness and trick
plays that we may never see again, and had the

(05:03):
Hook and Lateral or hook and latter as people call it,
and the Statue of Liberty, and then it had uh,
what's it was? Chris? Is it Chris Bore what's his name?
He used to work with, Chris Myers. Chris Myers completely
butchered the running back asking his cheerleader girlfriend's hand in marriage.

(05:24):
So he goes, I know you're going to ask her
to marry you? Like at that ruins the surprise you had? Dope? Sorry, anyway,
that was That was two thousand and seven.

Speaker 5 (05:36):
Correct, Yes, it was January first of two thousand and seven.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
And I'll bet at that point in time they're like,
is it two thousand and seven?

Speaker 4 (05:42):
Ian Johnson was the running.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
Back, Iany Was he still married? Good question?

Speaker 5 (05:47):
Yeah, Yeah, I think they are, because I think there
was a piece done with about them recently.

Speaker 4 (05:51):
Forty three to forty two.

Speaker 6 (05:53):
I think that's the best Bowl game I've ever seen,
just with all the just the kind of the underd
taking on the heavyweight and then just all the crazy plays,
this scoring.

Speaker 1 (06:04):
I saw the best bowl game you were saying, I
think it is, in my opinion, you didn't see did
you see USC Texas for the National Championship game? That
was a bowl game?

Speaker 4 (06:10):
Yeah? I just think that that was a better game.
Wasn't worth his mind?

Speaker 5 (06:13):
I think in defense of what Iowa Sam is saying,
it's the underdog portion of what Boise State represented at
that time, all right, and and the way and you
remember the fourth thounds that they converted. It just wasn't
the statue of liberty that the hook and hooking ladder
that they ran during that game as well. Not one
of the better Oklahoma teams, but still a team that
was good enough to play in a Fiesta Bowl for sure.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Team was Bomar The quarterback there.

Speaker 5 (06:38):
Uh you know, I can't remember exactly it was an
Adrian Peterson y, Yeah, because he was the rookie of
the year. Then in two thousand and seven, for the
NFL portion of this conversation.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
Jared Zebranski was the quarterback of the Broncos. For it
was Dan Hawkins? Was it?

Speaker 6 (06:56):
Dan Hawkins was a quarterback the big quesch of the
the Vision one Football.

Speaker 5 (07:01):
Two thousand and seven was a good year for Ohio State.
The problem was it was a great year for the
University of Florida because not only in Florida then beat
them a week later Florida Gate in Glendale, Arizona for
the National Championship. But it was also then in the
two thousand and seven Final Four in Atlanta that the

(07:23):
Gators went back to back by beating Greg Godin and
Mike Conley and Thadmada in the National Championship game. So
that was prime Florida Gator territory in terms of college
football and college basketball. They basically did the double. They
did the back to back by winning the football in
the two thousand and seven year, because that game did

(07:46):
happen in January and then three months later in early
April in Atlanta cut down the nets for the second
straight year.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Doug, Doug, what if somebody would have said to you
after that championship game. In seventeen years, Michael Connolly will
be a thriving NBA player having signed a couple Max deals,
and Greg Odin will not be a very good pro
because of injuries.

Speaker 1 (08:13):
I mean, at the time, I obviously would have said,
you're crazy but I also like knowing the history of
the sport. There have been plenty of big guys that
there just bodies let them down to be to be
totally fair, right, to be totally fair.

Speaker 6 (08:26):
This from Ryan Berschinger, Thank you, Ryan. Running Back Sam
con Gotto is a doctor now, which is pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (08:32):
Good for him, doctor, pro football, doctor gotto, Sam con Gotto,
what a name? Please football?

Speaker 4 (08:38):
Pro football player for a.

Speaker 5 (08:43):
Two thousand and seven I used to travel a lot
for Fox Sports Radio, and I traveled a lot in
two thousand and seven.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
If we get a playing a pivot foot there, Dan.

Speaker 5 (08:54):
I'm sorry, I was just going to keep the segment moving.
You know.

Speaker 4 (08:57):
It was kind of a humble brag. You traveled a
lot for work?

Speaker 1 (09:00):
Yep, Yeah, yeah, Actually that was back when we had
a lot of money to throw around. That's what That's
what you're saying.

Speaker 5 (09:05):
So in two thousand and seven, yes, I saw the
Spurs sweep the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, the bronze
first appearance in the NBA Finals. They were swept in
four games. Because you weren't sure if the series was
going to be extended to a game five or not.

(09:25):
We had to wait for travel because the game was
on Thursday night. I took in the two thousand and
seven US Open that year, drove from Cleveland down to
Pittsburgh at Oakmont a year that on Hell Cabrera ended
up winning, breaking through holding off Jim Furick and Tiger
Woods and others to win the US Open that year.
And I'm surprised Iowa Sam did bring this up. Zach

(09:46):
Johnson won the Masters in O seven. Yes, Tiger Woods
won the PGA that year at Southern Hills Doug in
Tulsa in the Open.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
The waters that year was Yeah, it was super hot.

Speaker 5 (09:59):
It was super hot, but it's also a spot where
you saw Tiger show signs of maybe that knee wasn't great,
kind of celebrated on the eighth I think it was
the eighteenth toll and his knee kind of gave. But
he won the two thousand and seven PGA Championship that year.
Sergio Garcia was also close to winning the Open Championship
at CARNOUSTI missed a putt at the end and then

(10:19):
lost in a playoff to Padrig Harrington.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
So that was that was also Austin red Sox really
made it baseball boring, right, because in four they overcame
the curse of the Bambino. And then I think it
was sixth that the White Sox won.

Speaker 5 (10:36):
So that five oh five?

Speaker 1 (10:38):
Right, So the very next year, so eighty eight game
eighty eight year, right that was it?

Speaker 4 (10:41):
Was it five over the Astros White Sox was five?

Speaker 1 (10:45):
Yes, yeah, and so o seven the Red Sox won again.
They swept the Colorado Rockies four games and none. That
was Jonathan Papelbon, an incredibly unlikable human being as a closer.
He was just one of those guys who like people
felt about him the way they feel about Eagles fans, right, like, yeah,
I know he's good, but god, I don't like him. Right.

Speaker 4 (11:06):
Matt Holliday played in that World's Hurt now swept.

Speaker 1 (11:10):
Never touched home plate in the and that was danl CS.
Was that the DS They didn't touch home plate?

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Oh that's right, yeah, I forget.

Speaker 3 (11:19):
That's a good one. By the way, earlier that year,
Prince Prince endured rain literally and figuratively. He had in
the Super Bowl known as one of the best performances ever.

Speaker 1 (11:35):
I think it was. I mean it's in my lifetime, right.

Speaker 3 (11:42):
And one act in that one act that would eventually
play in the Super Bowl. If I'm not mistaken, I
think she has had the best song of the year
and it went something like this And I'm not familiar
with the song. Maybe maybe Dan and Sam knowses you

(12:04):
know who this is, Doug.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
I believe that's Beyonce.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Song of the Year, irreplaceable off her second studio album,
B Day.

Speaker 1 (12:17):
This is this is actually what what this segments all about?

Speaker 7 (12:20):
People.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
I hope everybody understands, like we do this worst singing
and this is where Jaced wants to show off.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
She went on to have a pretty good career she did.
It was also the year that the iPhone debuted. Our
lives collectively as a planet has has never been the
same since the iPhone debuted.

Speaker 4 (12:41):
I can raise my hand in my bad and iPhone.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
I just love my love, my BlackBerry love. Uh.

Speaker 5 (12:47):
Seven was raising his hand?

Speaker 1 (12:50):
O seven was Beck's picture. Was The Departed?

Speaker 4 (12:54):
Probably my favorite movie of all time? Really?

Speaker 7 (12:56):
No?

Speaker 4 (12:57):
Wait? Was it seven? I came out of six though,
didn't it in? And O seven seven? Best picture?

Speaker 1 (13:02):
No?

Speaker 3 (13:02):
Seven?

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Yes, you're right? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (13:04):
Was the Department Departed?

Speaker 4 (13:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (13:06):
My all time?

Speaker 4 (13:07):
It's my favorite movie.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
The best Sorcese.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
Movie of all time, you would say what, I would
argue that it wasn't even the best scorsesee, I.

Speaker 6 (13:15):
Think, well, it's the only movie of his it's ever
won Best Picture. He'd been snubbed time and time again.

Speaker 4 (13:20):
Goodfellas a good Fella, I mean, like known better as
a better movie.

Speaker 6 (13:24):
I think that departed because I just love the Irish
mob element of it. I think the acting is fantastic,
the story is really well done. It's my favorite movie.
I think I put it at number one of all.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
He did say his favorite movie of all time, just
my favorite, SA the best, my everyone's favorite. He said
it was his favorite, which, again none of us actually
pills Sam's opinion, but it is his opinion.

Speaker 4 (13:46):
Two pills.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Speaking of movies, Doug, it was the summer of Apatow.
Knocked Up was a huge hit with Catherine Heigel and
Seth Rogan, followed.

Speaker 1 (13:57):
By her huh no, she's the Jonathan Paplebon of gas Anatomy.

Speaker 5 (14:06):
Yeah, it's totally true. Well, the truth came out seemingly
that career went down.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
Absolutely, she was a She's like an eight that thought
she was a ten, you know, whereas you really wanted
ten that thinks she's an eight, or even an eight,
that thinks she's a five or six. Yeah, she was
an eight that.

Speaker 4 (14:29):
She's That's actually a real good analogy.

Speaker 3 (14:31):
Apatol also came out with super Bad later that summer,
good one massive hit comedy.

Speaker 6 (14:38):
He's a good he's he's good at what he does
is his comedies are just too long. They're always too long.
They meander. A good comedy should always be ninety minutes,
and his were like far beyond that completely.

Speaker 1 (14:49):
Here's here's what. Here's what I say. The hardest, The
two hardest genres of movie to make, I believe are
comedies and sports movies. I agree comedies worch movies. Comedy
is because like it's just hard to be funny for
that long.

Speaker 4 (15:05):
Right, you know the stick, Where's out after ninety minutes?

Speaker 1 (15:08):
And then the other part too, it is sports are
hard because like you got to paint such a really
good picture, but then if the actual sports scenes are bad,
it really takes away from the movie.

Speaker 4 (15:20):
It's gonna be realistic, authentic.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
Yeah, what was the other? What was the other? Music?
We got music, we got movies? Oh, I know, I know.
This was also back in the TV viewing era. This
is back when people used to watch TV shows. What

(15:42):
was the hottest TV show in two thousand and seven?

Speaker 3 (15:47):
Well, I've got a list. But are you going for
a specific show?

Speaker 1 (15:52):
Well I had one in mind, but go ahead, I
mean you want your your.

Speaker 3 (15:57):
List, American Idol and Big Bang Theory. We are all
over these most watched shows. Sure, I try to look
for the show that made its debut.

Speaker 1 (16:06):
Did did Breaking Bad make its debut in O seven?

Speaker 6 (16:09):
I think it was eight? I think it started in
eight eight? Pretty sure was it was lost? Still a
big thing in seven?

Speaker 1 (16:16):
Mad Men? Mad Men was oh seven? Mad Men was
oh seven?

Speaker 4 (16:21):
Great show.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
I love mad Man.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
Dan, you watch mad Men?

Speaker 5 (16:25):
No, I have not.

Speaker 1 (16:26):
I would. I think you'd really like it, Dan, I
just do. I really like mad Men, really like mad Man.
So we've gotten movies, we've gotten TV shows, We've gotten
a little bit of music with Beyonce, We've gotten college
do we do? We did college basketball? We did a

(16:49):
little college football. We did a little NFL, oh seven,
NBA we did. We did Major League Baseball.

Speaker 4 (16:57):
I think we covered it.

Speaker 1 (16:58):
I think we covered it.

Speaker 4 (17:00):
Stanley Cup, anyone, anyone? I couldn't tell you.

Speaker 1 (17:03):
Let's move on nobody here, you know who cares Nobody? Nobody,
that's don't call it a throwback.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
Don't call it a throwback. Fox Sports Radio has the
best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of
our shows at Foxsports Radio dot com and within the
iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to listen live.

Speaker 1 (17:30):
S Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. He's,
of course the lead analyst for the NFL Draft. He
has an award winning podcast called Move the Sticks, and
he also is the color analyst for the LA Chargers
radio network. He's the one and only Daniel Jeremiah. He
joins us for his weekly visit here on the Doug
Gotlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. DJ. Let's get with

(17:53):
tonight's game Detroit. You know they lost Malcolm Rodriguez, who's
kind of heart and soul linebacker, just a tough, rugged player,
kind of fits what they do. Defense hasn't been great,
but obviously this is at times been the best team,
maybe throughout the season the best team in the NFL.
What's the current status in your mind of the Detroit Lions.

Speaker 7 (18:15):
Well, I think we're gonna have to rely a little
bit on the offense for a minute, you know why
they try and sort things out and uh and replace
some pieces here. So you know, the good news for
them is that they have an offense capable of being
pretty explosive and pretty dynamic, especially on a short week.
I know there's been I've heard a lot of talk about, well,
you know, green Bay. You know they need this more

(18:36):
than Detroit. Detroit, you know, could afford to drop one
in green Bay. This is kind of desperation to stay
stay in it here inside the division. But I mean,
the Vikings are just one game behind the Lions. I
don't think the Lions take their foot off the gas
by any stretch. So Green Bay is catching them at
the right time in terms of the health part of it.
But I still, man, it's a Thursday, you know, in

(18:57):
that building. With their speed on the offensive side of
the ball, I still think it's a it's going to
be a heck of a matchup.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
I do as as well. But can we hadn't talk since.

Speaker 7 (19:09):
Last week Belichick thing? Please, Doug?

Speaker 1 (19:11):
Yeah, go ahead.

Speaker 3 (19:12):
I didn't know.

Speaker 7 (19:13):
I literally learned in the update about the Belichick thing.
When did this happen?

Speaker 1 (19:18):
Just been reported in the last couple hours.

Speaker 5 (19:21):
Okay, yeah, just yeah, and Daniel, just to give some
some background inside Carolina. The twenty four to seven Sports
affiliate had reported on Sunday that the sides had contract
contact between each other, but today they're reporting that an
interview has taken place with Belichick in the school.

Speaker 7 (19:38):
Oh that's well, you know what I was thinking of
when I just the first thought that came to my
mind was, I think his son, Steve is coaching at
Washington under Jed Fish who you know, and he had
been in the NFL with his dad, So can I
may speculate?

Speaker 1 (19:54):
Can I speculate? DJ? Yeah, I wouldn't surprise me if
he tried to do the I'll take the job up
for a couple of years. If my son gets off
when I'm when I'm done, you.

Speaker 7 (20:05):
Know, I'm pass it off to him. That's an interesting thought.
That was my first thought. The second thought was you're
and you're in this world now, so I would just
love to know, like if you're the you know, they
all recruit that area, right, So if you're if you're
a big time five star kid in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia,
and you have your visits coming in you know your
coach is coming in and you you go with Dan

(20:27):
Lanning and his energy. He comes in, Dabo Sweeney comes
in with his energy, and then Bill Beepchik walks in
like that's got to be the most awkward transition from
personalities of all time and a recruiting betrayal.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
Yeah, he does put down on the desk uh six
super Bowl rings, which no matter. And and let's also
be honest, a big portion of it is not the
energy of the coaching staff. It's the number of zeros
in the offer.

Speaker 7 (20:58):
That's more of the economy than the energy that yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean you can sell a lot
of things. He's the NFL, NFL, but a lot of
that that that sale. The interesting part though to it
is like I thought Jerry Jones nailed it with with
Deon Sanders. You know, the strength of Dion is in
his ability to recruit, relate to people, and he's more salesman,
whereas and like for a Belichick, that's he's just better

(21:25):
than the NFL because it's just about football, just about football.

Speaker 7 (21:28):
The the other part too, that's the level playing field.
You know, give me the level playing field that I
can give you a schematic advantage.

Speaker 1 (21:34):
Now maybe a static advantage. And now here's the other thing.
He's also bad GM and a lot of it is
about being a GM, you know, but you got to
you have to understand the landscape of what you're getting.
On the other hand, is a master head coach. But
my guess would be if he had any affinity for
doing it, it would be based upon getting his son
the job.

Speaker 7 (21:54):
What about what about the same inside of it? Right?
Because they were together, and you know, it's kind of
a interesting dynamic when Saban was his defensive coordinator and uh,
Saban goes off to college and uh, you know, as
labeled as the all time greatest coach, and those two
coaches are always kind of grouped together. As much as
Belichick and Tom Bradier group together. You've got Belichick and

(22:15):
Saban or group together. Won the best NFL coach, won
the best college coach. It would be kind of you know,
it would be a little one upmanship, you know. And
I'll go down to college and win a national championship
real quick, just to show how.

Speaker 1 (22:26):
I mean, listen, I mean, SMU is in the ACC
championship game and they have some money. Carolina has money.
I mean, like, I actually have no doubt if they
want to spend Ohio state level money in the ACC,
you win that league.

Speaker 7 (22:41):
Yeah, you know. No, you've got the jump man stuff
all behind you too. You've got some sizzle to sell
there as well as all the You do have some stuff.

Speaker 1 (22:48):
You do have some sizzle to You have some sizzle
to sell. Let's let's get to some other some other
NFL issues. Daniel Jeremiah moved the sticks as the podcast
NFL Network. Course, you also hear them call La Chargers
game games. Okay, brock perty what if you're if you're
the Niners, how are you approaching this offseason?

Speaker 7 (23:11):
I don't know, man, I'm I'm tempted to slow play it.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
You know, what is the what is the rush? Like
he's and who was it who joined us yesterday? Who
said who quoted Daniel Jeremiah and said tractor or trailer?
He's a trailer, not a tractor.

Speaker 7 (23:31):
Yeah, that's the analogy that we've we've used forever, you know,
is trying to identify which one of those you are,
and who's propped up by the team, and who can
prop up the team. And I think he's a he's
a middle to high end trailer, you know, So that
wouldn't look quite the same if the roster fell apart
around him because he's eaten up so much money. So yeah,
I'm not saying I want to kick him to the curb,

(23:53):
but I'd be a little a little reluctant at this
point in time to throw the number he's gonna want.

Speaker 1 (23:58):
Stut Gottlieb Show here on Fox Trade. I went to
the Packers game, and it's the second time I've gone
to a game with the Dolphins and been incredibly underwhelmed
by Tua. And this time it wasn't just the arm strength.
He can't move at all, DJ like you know those
the other when when he reloads like it's not in basketball,

(24:22):
And we talked about this to my team, guys with
dead feet. He does not. He's his feet are not
alive the way that you remember Peyton Manning wasn't. I mean,
he's Peyton Manning, rais preadant. Woman came in third, but
in that pocket he had live feet, like he just
does not move particularly well. And then I just I
wonder if the Dolphins are regretting that contract. I know
they have other issues in that locker room I wonder

(24:44):
how much that bothers him.

Speaker 7 (24:46):
Yeah, I would say still been. I mean the difference
between him and everybody else they are playing with was
still pretty drastic. And they built the entire offense around him,
you know, for better or for worse. That's how they've
set it up. And you know, I think he's you know,
speaking of Peyton Manning, I think that team is the
most home field dependent offenses maybe since the Colts. You know,

(25:11):
the Cults are just a different team outside of that building.
I think the Dolphins are a different offense outside of
their place. You know, it's just they are built for speed,
They're built for rhythm and timing, and they're built for
good weather. They're not built for Green Bay in November.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
No, They're They're not Or or Buffalo or Baltimore or Pittsburgh.

Speaker 7 (25:30):
Yeah, no question. I mean, I mean kind that's kind
of the way Indy was. Unfortunately Indian side, their division
didn't have to deal with much of that. But you know,
you get into the playoffs and they were a different
looking team if they didn't have home field advantage.

Speaker 1 (25:43):
Would I would agree with you. It's the Doug Gottlieb
Show here on Fox Sports radio. Okay, help me out
with the Chargers. They still haven't beaten anybody good, but
they haven't lost anybody bad.

Speaker 7 (25:56):
How good are they to signing good coaching? You know?
The way the way I put it is that every
time they've taken the field within you know, a near
equal talent situation or even sometimes a little bit under
on the talent situation, they've won. The games they've lost,
the other team just had better dudes, and they didn't
play quite as good, you know, outside of maybe the

(26:17):
Arizona game would be the only one, and that was
kind of a fluky game where Jalen Raider fumbles at
the one yard line going in and amongst other weird
things that happened. But they don't you know, they don't
give away games, they don't blow coverages. They they are
just where they're supposed to be and and kind of
just sit and wait for the team to to mess

(26:37):
it up. And last week Kirk Cousins was you know,
he was more than willing to do that with the
four picks, including the pick six, that was the that
was the ballgame. So they're in every game they're they're
still missing I would say a handful of pieces to
be a championship level team. But I mean, Doug, they're
going to make the postseason and year one of this thing,
which is pretty impressive.

Speaker 1 (26:57):
Yeah, got the show here on Fox WORTS Radio. You know,
I'm I'm really fascinated by the Dallas Cowboys. You heard
did you hear what Dak Prescott said yesterday?

Speaker 7 (27:10):
No?

Speaker 1 (27:11):
It's kind of an interesting SoundBite, right. He definitely stood
by Mike McCarthy and he said something to the effect of,
you know, I think he now he deserves to keep coaching,
but and I love playing for him, but you know,
make his own decisions. I feel like it was Dak
basically saying, hey, the defense is a disaster. Mike zimmer

(27:32):
was in his choice. What are you hearing in NFL
circles about what the Cowboys want to do?

Speaker 7 (27:38):
You know what's interesting is maybe for the first time
since I've been in the league, I think that the
cowboy fatigue that's you know, been in the media has
made its way throughout the whole league. They don't I mean,
this is probably the worst thing you could say about
a franchise. I'm on the phone every day talking to
friends around the league. They don't even come up in conversation,

(27:59):
you know, like that's probably the worst place you could
be if you want to talk about just being irrelevant.
They're not even a topic of conversation around the league
right now.

Speaker 1 (28:08):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, c J.

Speaker 7 (28:12):
Stroud, that's a problem, by the way, No, I got it.

Speaker 1 (28:15):
I mean just I don't know. If you saw Zach
Martin's got ankle surgery, there's talk that that could be
career ender, by the way, So I.

Speaker 7 (28:23):
Mean even inside that division, like inside that division. Okay, obviously,
Philly's playing as good as any team in the NFL's
that's noteworthy, and they are a championship caliber team. Washington
is going to be. They are on the ground floor.
This whole Jaden Daniels thing, which is fun and exciting.
New York is kind of a dumpster fire. But there's
the intrigue of Okay, they can kind of they can

(28:44):
start fresh. They're done with Daniel Jones. Where do they
go from here? The Cowboys are saddled with some players.
They're not going anywhere. They don't have the coach figure, Like,
there's just nothing to get excited about.

Speaker 1 (28:55):
There, nothing at all to be excited about c J. Stroud.
What happened him?

Speaker 7 (29:03):
Well, there's two things, and I think they're related. He's
getting hit way more this year than he did last year,
and they're not as explosive. They're not nearly as explosive
vertically in the passing game, so he's having to be
more you know, sustained drives playing, you know, have to
play really really efficient for them to be you know,
to move the ball and score points. They're not getting

(29:25):
those big chunk plays. And one of the reasons not
getting the big chunk plays they can't hold up, you know,
they just can't. They are not protecting well enough for
them to push the ball down the field and especially
for a young quarterback to have to nickel and dime
your way to points. You know, it's just it requires
so much to go right. And that's no knock on him.
He's in his second year, but that's that's too much

(29:47):
for him at this point in time to be able
to do that. Last year they were able to hit
some home runs, get some chunk plays, some three and
four play drives sprinkled in, and now it's everything is
just so hard, so.

Speaker 1 (29:59):
Hard, DJ, you're the best man can't wait to hear
the call of the game this weekend. Thanks for our
guest on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 7 (30:05):
All right, thanks buddy.

Speaker 2 (30:06):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.

Speaker 1 (30:15):
App Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Amazing song.

Speaker 3 (30:22):
This is my favorite Christmas song. You're listening to it
right here, Phil Collins on the drums, boy, George Bono,
Simon Lebon.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
But why is it? Why is it your favorite song?

Speaker 3 (30:36):
Listen to the beat, Listen to the bass. Song was
put together by Bob Geldoff, who was Pink Floyd. For
those who don't know, just a very edgy song about
people starving and the greatest gift they're going to get
this year in Africa is life. So it kind of

(30:56):
makes you rethink your priorities. And Jason loves eighties music.

Speaker 1 (31:05):
Yeah, I don't. I don't. I think it's a good song.
I mean it's meaningful, but that's better than that Nat
King Cole song that I had Sam play. What was
that Monday or Tuesday?

Speaker 6 (31:18):
The Christmas song Chestnuts Roasting on an open fire? That's
an all time classic. Everybody's got their reasons for their favorite.

Speaker 1 (31:23):
Chest nuts roasting on an open fire, jack frost nipping
at your nose. Well, listen, Merry Christmas to everybody. It does,
I will say this, And southern California it can feel
like it. I don't know. Again, I haven't been. I

(31:44):
haven't been home. Next week we'll be we'll be home
right next week. We play our art trivel you w
in Milwaukee on Wednesday. On Thursday, I'll be with you
guys in the studio, possibly Friday, depending upon our practice
time Friday morning. But I haven't been to southern California
in quite some time. Have you had the winter weather

(32:06):
go through followed by clear crisp where you can see
the snow capped San San Gabriel Mountains? Like, have you
have you gotten to there yet?

Speaker 4 (32:17):
No, we've it's barely rained here in Sherman Oaks.

Speaker 1 (32:20):
Yeah, I mean that. Listen, that's that's pretty spectaclear when
you can go like we go to the beach or
go to the mountains, and we got like an hour
and a half in between. But other than that, that's
the only time it really feels like Christmas here. In
northeast Wisconsin. Definitely feels like Christmas outside. A little dusting
of snow outside, and though it's clear and a couple

(32:41):
of wispy clouds and its sunny, it is cold. Merry
Christmas to all. And let's get to the press, the press.
Hey there, Dan Byer, what have you got.

Speaker 5 (32:52):
I don't think you're going to the beach though here
in January or February.

Speaker 7 (32:56):
Mark, I.

Speaker 6 (33:00):
Like to walk the beach barefoot, but I'm not swimming.
I went swimming actually over the weekend. You're not like
getting the cold soaking up the rays.

Speaker 1 (33:08):
Well that Miami is like, listen, I'm not a huge
Florida guy, but Miami in January is awesome.

Speaker 6 (33:15):
I think that's the only time it's actually the weather
is tolerable in Miami.

Speaker 1 (33:18):
Right, No, no, no, no, you still can be humid,
but you got you got, you get like six real
because summers just summers too much, too much. Also, Texas's
especially once you get you know, Houston, Dallas in San Antonio.

Speaker 4 (33:33):
Fifteen every day.

Speaker 5 (33:34):
All right, guys, we've got nine conference championship games happening
this Friday and Saturday in college football. Would you guys
like to know what the most expensive ticket.

Speaker 1 (33:46):
Is, Yes, SEC championship it is.

Speaker 5 (33:51):
How low do you think that the lowest ticket price
is one hundred and fifty All right, that's pretty good,
guess for time restraints, it's one hundred and eight dollars,
which I don't think is must see, Like like you'd
be like, yeah, one hundred and eight bucks, I'll go.

(34:11):
The problem is the second lowest price for the other
eight games is forty five dollars.

Speaker 1 (34:18):
No.

Speaker 5 (34:18):
Really, these conference championship games, not only are they really
not meaningful for the grand scheme of the bracket outside
of the automatic bid. Sure, but I don't think fans
really are dying to see these games. If Arizona State
or Iowa State gets into the playoff, I think people
are saving their money for wherever they would maybe have

(34:41):
to travel to.

Speaker 4 (34:42):
Yeah, that's it, that first round.

Speaker 1 (34:44):
Honestly, that's a bold bring up.

Speaker 2 (34:46):
Dan.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
The point you just brought up is the point that
administrators have talked about for a long time, and it's
going to be very interesting. Okay, Like people don't have
the money to They probably went to a game or
two a year, maybe they would had season tickets. Now
you're like, all right, Conference championship, like, I'm gonna save it. Okay,
do you go to the first game, which is home

(35:08):
game for people? Probably the second game? Like hmm, I
mean that's a lot of money for people to travel
to go see. It's a lot of money.

Speaker 5 (35:19):
A lot of days off from work. Remember that week
off you were off in December? Yeah, are gonna need
that from mid January as well? My school advanced.

Speaker 1 (35:28):
Well, you know, lots of people do kind of work
from home or whatever the zoom calls still, but yes,
that's great, not everybody. The travel expense is a real
real thing. And then you got weather. Right, We've been
fortunate we don't have we haven't had some huge You
get a big storm in parts of the country, you
know where some of these games are supposed to be,
maybe in Indiana or in Ohio. You get a big weather,

(35:52):
you get a big snowstorm, and it's not that you
can't play the game. You can, but can people get
there and can they get out? And then they got
to go play somewhere else.

Speaker 5 (36:02):
Inside Carolina reporting, Bill Belichick's interviewed for the North Carolina
head coaching vacancy.

Speaker 1 (36:08):
I wanted to happen just for the pure like just
because you know, it's a weird one, but it's not
like anything we haven't seen. And remember Charlie Weiss, of
course had some success early on Notre Dame, not so
much at Kansas. Of course, we've seen Saban. There's been
lots of guys who have taken that. And now everyone says,
and it's true that in many ways, many ways, college

(36:32):
football is more the professional model, and you bring in
the most successful professional coach of our lifetime, why not.

Speaker 5 (36:39):
Eric Bnemy will not return as the offensive coordinator at
UCLA next season?

Speaker 1 (36:44):
Was he sleeping with the enemy?

Speaker 5 (36:46):
He was not, different reasons given reports saying he was fired.
His agency says that his plan was still only coach
at UCLA for one year and to go back to
the NFL in twenty twenty five.

Speaker 1 (37:00):
And I don't buy that.

Speaker 5 (37:01):
One bucks forward Chris Middleton expected to make his debut
tomorrow against the Celtics. While in baseball, the A's have
given Luis Severino a three year, sixty seven million dollar deal.
The sixty seven million given to the pitcher the most
guaranteed money ever given by that organization, and that is
the press.

Speaker 4 (37:19):
Bay get out there and pressed that was.

Speaker 1 (37:21):
The press My real quick, Dan Buyer, who do you
like tonight? The line is three and a half Green Bay.
I like Green Bay as well. I like Green Bay
and I like the over fifty two is the Tolls
