Selection Sunday a couple days away. Conference tournaments underway. We'll
talk about the injury and the Duke game earlier today
(00:49):
and what that means for the tournament, what I think,
what I think it means for the actual.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Player who got hurt. That's upcoming fifteen minutes away.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
But it is a Thursday, and most people will many
people will tweet out or on ig put you know,
TBT throwback Thursday. We don't throw it back on Thursday.
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Don't call it a throwback.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Throw back Thursday, don't call it a throwback thirst. This
is where Jay Stu picks out a year and we
just had some fun with it. Talk about sports, talk
about things in the media, talk about things on TV,
(01:36):
things in movies, things in music.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
What year we picking today, Jase dou.
Speaker 5 (01:39):
Thank you Doug. I'll take it from here all to
remember what you were doing three four years ago. The
year is twenty twenty one. If you think about it,
if you just take like a glance scene, thought about it,
it was a very strange year. We were come out
(02:00):
of a worldwide pandemic. We weren't out of it by
any means, and it's almost like it was a different world.
Like things that were politically popular in twenty twenty one
are no longer popular, so we're going back four years.
So it's almost like we're going back twenty four years
in a lot of ways. But I did want to
draw attention to something. In twenty twenty one, we had
(02:22):
a strange NFL draft. Trevor Lawrence was considered by many
people a can't miss off the top of the draft,
and that didn't work out. Trey Lance was taken by
the forty nine ers, And this is the very crux
of this segment. There was a report at the time
that Kyle Shanahan and Shanahan didn't want to trade up
(02:47):
to get Trey Lance. He wanted mac Jones. He thought
mac Jones was best for the forty nine ers. Well,
the guess who signed with the forty nine ers yesterday, gentlemen,
mac Jones, mac Jones. Trey Lance was traded away to
the Cowboys for like a six round draft pick. But
if you think about those three quarterbacks in that draft,
they're all misses, and then you include Zach Wilson, who
(03:11):
went second, and that it makes it even worse, Which
tells me a lot of things. It tells me that
all the noise that you're hearing from pundits right now
that are acting like they know what they're talking about,
they don't. And a lot of NFL executives who do
this for a living often get quarterbacks wrong. In the
NFL Draft twenty twenty one is a cautionary tale for
(03:34):
those that talk about the NFL and those that paid
a lot of money to make decisions in the NFL,
which is why I'm choosing to focus on the year
twenty twenty one. Isaac Lowancron is in for Dan Byer today. Isaac,
when you think back to that year, what sticks out
to you most sports wise?
Speaker 6 (03:54):
I feel similarly that any event you talk about is
clouded by the transition period where we're not in COVID,
but we're kind of starting to come out of COVID,
so we're kind of caught between two worlds. So what
exemplified it for me is something we actually might have
talked about yesterday, and that's the NCAA Tournament that year,
(04:18):
which was held entirely in the Indianapolis area, mostly at
the Pacers Home Arena, Lucas Oil Stadium, Farmers Coliseum, which
we were talking about, Hinklefield House. There were also games
played in Bloomington at Assembly Hall and Macki Arena at Purdue,
(04:38):
and it was just all those venues were operating at
a I believe, twenty five percent capacity. The other thing
I remember about the tournament that year is the run
by UCLA and that incredible semi final game against Gonzaga yeah,
the banked in three that sent the game to overtime,
where Gonzaga eventually prevailed. But I think what overall stood
(05:02):
out to me was it was kind of that odd
transition between the COVID world and now, thankfully us getting
back to the way it's been ever since.
Speaker 5 (05:13):
Since that event.
Speaker 7 (05:14):
And don't forget about UCLA first four to final four.
Speaker 5 (05:18):
Oh that's right.
Speaker 7 (05:19):
Yeah, they they went all the way. I believe they actually,
I think they defeated Michigan State in that first four
game and then they went all the way to that
final four.
Speaker 6 (05:28):
That it was.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
That was a weird NCAA tournament, but it did prove
that you can do it one site in one area,
and I still think Vegas eventually they should do it there.
Speaker 7 (05:37):
It was Baylor over Gonzaga, Yeah, yes, and it was it.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
Was Gonzaga was the dominant team. I thought it was
Gonzag and everybody else. They were supposed to play earlier
in the year, but the game was canceled because of COVID,
and then they played the Nasal Chanceship game and Baylor
was unbelievable.
Speaker 7 (05:55):
And we were talking Doug earlier about Gonzaga's star player
Jalen Suggs, and I had to look up like where
he ended up. And he plays for the Magic, So
that explains why I had to look him up. Even
though the Magic are they're coming, they're up there. They
have a winning record, right, I mean, listen, I'm gonna
pull come up.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Is that what you're saying?
Speaker 7 (06:14):
Okay, But I'm gonna pull a Shack here like from
the the other day and just be like, I don't
know anything about the Orlando Magic. I really don't, but
he is on the Magic Jalen Suggs and yep. But
that Baylor uh, that coach drew team playing with defense
and they got the Natty?
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Could I point out one difference between Shack and Iowa Sam.
Shack gets paid twenty five million dollars a year to
talk about basketball, and he doesn't know the head coach
of the Detroit Pistons. Iowa Sam doesn't get paid that much.
Speaker 7 (06:42):
Not even close. And I could tell you that Chauncey
Billups played for the Pistons, but he wasn't the coach.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, you know, It's what's interesting about that that Baylor team,
Davion Mitchell was one of their stars. Davian Mitchell has
one of the great nicknames in the history of college basketball.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
You're familiar with what his nickname is?
Speaker 7 (07:02):
Anybody, Uh, Spider, No, that's I'm sorry that Donovan Mitchell.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
Yes, yes, his name is off Night.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Oh boy, yes, wow, because anyone he guarded had an
off night Tyrese Haliburton, who he guarded when he s
at Iowa State.
Speaker 6 (07:26):
I assumed it was a different nickname, all right, that
that would actually be a good discussion to have later
best unflattering sports nicknames of all time, because when you
said off Night, I thought that related to him and
not the guy he guarded.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Okay, related to sugar Night.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
That's also I mean, like, look, that was the wasn't
that the COVID year playoff football playoffs as well?
Speaker 7 (07:52):
Well, in.
Speaker 5 (07:55):
Every single year, every single week, we do this. Yeah,
so the twenty twenty football season was wacky.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
Right, And then yes, but twenty one, I know it
wasn't the season, but the twenty one playoffs were during
COVID right, And that was when Tampa won the road games.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
But they went to lambeau Field and it was.
Speaker 5 (08:12):
Half full that's correct, yeah, right, and.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
Tom Brady they were he was unbelievable in the first half.
And who was that? King? Was his last name? What
was the defensive back? Who go? Who got burned? On
the like the last play of the first half.
Speaker 6 (08:26):
By Scotty Mitchell.
Speaker 5 (08:27):
I want to say, right, Kevin.
Speaker 3 (08:29):
King, I'll say sure, okay.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
And then of course, you know Aaron Rodgers had had
a chance to score. I think it was first and
goal after three trice. Then they kicked the field goal
instead of going forward on fourth down, which was an
interesting strategy. You talk about Desmond King, Desmond King, that's
it mean he's from Iowa, A isn't he was he
(08:54):
in Iowa?
Speaker 7 (08:55):
Desmond King? You're talking? Yeah, he played at Iowa, But
I don't think that's the game.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Who got burned?
Speaker 7 (09:03):
This is what you're talking about. The Packers Niners?
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (09:06):
Yeah, no, he never He played for the Texans and
the Chargers. He hasn't played for Different guy. Okay, m
a lot of guys named King out there. Yeah, my
my Desmond King won the Thorpe Award. Yeah, different guy.
Speaker 5 (09:23):
Now the actual NFL season, the twenty twenty one NFL
season was the the year of Aaron Rodgers. Remember he
did the immunization Crack went on to win the MVP.
Cooper Cup was a standout that year as well as
he would go on to uh lead the Rams to
the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (09:41):
Yeah, since any Bengals played him in the Super Bowl.
Cooper Cup was incredible in that in that Super Bowl
as well in the Super as well. We're missing buyer
for golf, no or not? Does anybody love golf as much?
Speaker 4 (09:54):
Now?
Speaker 8 (09:54):
Was that?
Speaker 3 (09:55):
The was that? The The year before was the Dodgers
in in COVID World Series? Right? Yeah?
Speaker 5 (10:03):
This was the Atlanta Braves Championship. They went from like
six seed wild card to winning at all? What's his
face was on all these championships? I'm trying to think
of the pitcher's name that was on. Was it will Smith? Isaac?
That was on like three straight championships?
Speaker 3 (10:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (10:20):
Right, you're right, you're right. He was on that Braves team.
I will say one golf note. It was the year
that Tiger had his accident. I know that's been mentioned
much of him.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Yeah, did we ever find out why.
Speaker 5 (10:36):
He was?
Speaker 6 (10:36):
He was late for some event and he was at
what happened to be a very dangerous curve curve.
Speaker 5 (10:45):
Speed.
Speaker 7 (10:46):
Yeah, with when their accidents happened there regularly just lost control.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
I will say that.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
I remember after that accident, I said on this show
I don't think he ever plays professional golf again. Now
he hasn't played particularly well, but he has played professional
golfs as much as when tears as Achilles ten and
were like, well he's done.
Speaker 3 (11:03):
They just stitch him up, but he comes back and plays, right,
They just they just do.
Speaker 5 (11:11):
Which random NBA team won the title? Hasn't there been
like six and six years or something.
Speaker 6 (11:16):
In twenty twenty one, Yeah, we want to say it
was the Milwaukee Bucks, Right, was the Bucks over the
Phoenix Suns?
Speaker 5 (11:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Yes, yes. Kevin King, by the way, is the is
the culprit Kevin k Green Bay Packering King.
Speaker 7 (11:28):
My Desmond would never get burned like that.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
I just remember.
Speaker 5 (11:34):
I remember seeing a feature of Yiannis when he was
winning that title. It was a sixty minutes feature, I
want to say, and he was wearing earbuds and the
sixteen minutes reporter was like, what are you listening to
right now in your earbuds? In twenty twenty one, and
it was this hit song of the summer, right, legitimately
(12:05):
good song. It topped the charts for seven weeks.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Top the chart for seven weeks.
Speaker 5 (12:11):
I want to say one of the babies featured.
Speaker 7 (12:14):
Was that du baby Dub baby, he got baby, he
got actually canceled, he got what do you call it,
not exp uh expunged. His part of it was expunged
because of something offensive he said at a concert.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
Yes, yeah, it was a bunch of offensive stuff.
Speaker 7 (12:30):
And so they took the rap part of that. Right now,
we're playing him, but he was, he was sort of
his part. It was canceled out and they reissued the song.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Uh that was I believe Dune Part one came out
that year. I'd become a big Dune guy. Did anybody
read the novels?
Speaker 5 (12:46):
No, I never read the novels, but I've seen both movies.
Speaker 3 (12:49):
I thought they were good. I thought they're good.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
It was a weird year though, for movies because most
of them were filmed before COVID, right that hadn't yet
been properly at uh edited, And it's just kind of
a I will tell you something about twenty twenty one
that I know. Kay, if you are looking for a
pre owned vehicle, if it's pre twenty twenty, like, it's
(13:13):
you know, reasonably expensive.
Speaker 3 (13:14):
It's like normal.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
Whatever a you know, five six year old car costs
once you get to twenty one, because there was limited
cars and then all of a sudden there was mass inflation,
Like it's like twice as much and you're two years later,
Like that doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Yeah, it's the whole COVID limited.
Speaker 7 (13:30):
It's a pre pre owned were hard to find. You
couldn't find a rental car because no one wanted to
rent a car during COVID because they weren't going anywhere,
so they sold off a lot of their fleets. Yeah,
it was a I managed to somehow get I got
a pre owned twenty eighteen car in twenty twenty one,
and I locked in my monthly payment for something that's reasonable,
(13:51):
and I feel like I got a good a really
good deal.
Speaker 5 (13:54):
Humble brag, humble brag on my monthly payment car.
Speaker 7 (13:57):
Yeah, I did.
Speaker 5 (13:59):
So my car story of twenty twenty one. And this
is interesting. So you talk about the values, Doug and
how they were out just how to whack. So my
lease was up in the fall of twenty twenty one.
So when I took my lease to the dealer, they
were willing to give me top dollar from my used car. Yeah,
but I used that value to my advantage and I
(14:21):
bought the rest of it. I just bought the rest
of it. I said, here's some cash, I'll take it
off the lot, and I'm happy for it. So that's
how I utilize that value.
Speaker 6 (14:33):
Now, I do not have a vehicle related twenty twenty
one story, but ironically, you have a vehicle.
Speaker 5 (14:40):
How did I How did I get here today?
Speaker 7 (14:42):
It's a long bicycle or I don't know me?
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Like, there's the ways you can get to places walking, bike,
foot power, scooter, busard My My.
Speaker 6 (14:50):
Current vehicle is fine, but you should talk to my
wife because the vehicle that I had when we were dating,
the best thing you could say about it was it
It was a It wasn't exactly a chick magnet. Yet
she married me anyway. But the one overlooked thing that
happened in twenty twenty one, and it was overlooked rightly
so because it wasn't supposed to happen. Remember, they actually
(15:11):
held an Olympics in twenty twenty one, the twenty twenty Olympics,
exactly the twenty twenty Summer Olympics that were supposed to
be held in Tokyo were actually held in Tokyo in
July and August of twenty twenty one, and as I recall,
they just didn't seem to make a cultural impact at all,
at least here in the United States, compared to what
(15:31):
turned out to be extremely successful from a rating standpoint
with the twenty twenty four Olympics.
Speaker 5 (15:35):
Well, Doug Win viral during those Olympics, I did you did?
Speaker 8 (15:40):
That?
Speaker 5 (15:40):
Was dead yips?
Speaker 3 (15:41):
Right? Oh, that's right.
Speaker 5 (15:44):
I forgot about that one, Simone Bios not the yips.
What do they call it? Uh?
Speaker 3 (15:48):
The twisty's, twisty's.
Speaker 5 (15:49):
The twisty's.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Was that right?
Speaker 5 (15:53):
I was on your side on that one.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Yeah. Do you guys remember what he was talking about?
Speaker 9 (15:57):
No?
Speaker 6 (15:57):
I mean I remember what happened with Simone Biles, but
I don't remember, well you said about it at the time.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
I don't remember the actual tweet. Do you just do?
Speaker 5 (16:05):
No? No, no, It was just something along the lines.
Speaker 2 (16:08):
Along lines of like you took somebody's spot basically, you know,
and you had the twisties. The twisties are the yips,
Like we make it out like it's you know, she
could die, Like I understand it's like that stuff is dangerous,
that sport is in fact dangerous. But I felt like
(16:29):
it was a little like you could not question her.
And my thing was, then here's what I believe my
take was.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Then I could be wrong.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
Was Hey, all athletes deal with some sort of performance anxiety.
The best of the best find a way to overcome them.
Speaker 3 (16:44):
Is that fair?
Speaker 5 (16:46):
If sports are indeed the last meritocracy in our world,
then that is true. Everybody has to deal with their
own stuff. And if you can't deal with it and
you get criticized, that's part that's baked in. That's baked
into being a high profile.
Speaker 3 (17:05):
Athlete, criticized female athlete.
Speaker 5 (17:08):
Well, the criticism of it that you know you had
to pull out or you let your team down, or
you know you got to battle through these things.
Speaker 3 (17:14):
I mean no, no, I'm just saying, what like the
lesson is you look at this, you cannot.
Speaker 2 (17:18):
Criticize where this the the whole idea of equality is
basically debunked in that right, they're protected class. Female athlete.
Can't can't nope, can't do it, can't do it, can't
be critical of a great female athlete.
Speaker 4 (17:35):
Can't do it.
Speaker 5 (17:36):
I'm a big fan of that tic.
Speaker 7 (17:39):
Well, if we fast forward to twenty four she she redeemed,
redeemed herself there in Paris, big lely big time.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
Wait wait wait, if she redeemed herself, then she did
something wrong.
Speaker 7 (17:49):
I guess if it depends on where you where you
line up. I mean, she wants something.
Speaker 3 (17:53):
I got them, I got them today, got them, got him.
Speaker 7 (17:57):
Do you guys remember though, that we squeezed two Masters
in twenty twenty one? Like, remember the Masters in twenty
twenty was in April, and we postponed it until was
it October of twenty twenty one or no, November? They did?
They have two. It was weird because we played ketchup
with a lot of these events and it just was
(18:18):
a strange.
Speaker 6 (18:19):
It was like it was November of twenty twenty and
then regularly in twenty twenty one.
Speaker 5 (18:23):
Yeah, but still you're right.
Speaker 7 (18:25):
Strange, right, and they have it like six months later.
Just was like, all right, here's the Masters make good
And yeah, it was like that for the Olympics as well.
Speaker 5 (18:34):
I will say this in pop culture, everyone love TikTok TikTok.
I guess made its biggest gain and users in twenty
twenty one as we were in our homes and then
Kim Kardashian, Pete Davidson was a thing that was Wow,
that was four whole years ago.
Speaker 7 (18:52):
Wow. I guess my brain didn't hold onto that. A
little bit of history.
Speaker 6 (18:58):
Was that before or after ario on A Grande?
Speaker 7 (19:01):
I think it was after he was dating Ariana Grande,
And then it was like Pete Davidson was the It
was like the cologne of the month for a lot
of a lot of ladies, a lot of high profile
celebrities out there. Pete Davidson because of rumors circulating about uh, yep.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
We're good, We're good.
Speaker 4 (19:22):
Can't do it?
Speaker 2 (19:24):
Yeah, man, Like, listen, this is a this is a

is don't call it Toto back Thursday.

Supply for life out here. Cooper Flag left, Today's a
duke game. And you know what's fascinating here is what
does it mean? John Shire said, doubtful. He plays tomorrow
in the ACC semi final, and I think he plays
(20:29):
in the NCA term. And obviously no one knows on
an ankle sprain. They did an X ray, they'll do
an MRI, right, and you know, barring it being you know,
a complete tear, because the sprain is at least some
form of tear of a ligament, right, hyper extension is
a stretching sprain is a tear of some kind of
(20:51):
the fibers. Right, So unless it's completely torn, he'll play.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
I think that.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
I I think, look, Cooper Flag is a lot like
Zion Williamson in and I think John Shi are also.
Speaker 3 (21:05):
Partially like that.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
Just likable, likable, and it's just amazing on how the
Duke thing has flipped. Probably send Zion in that. Yeah,
there'll be people cheering for them to win where and
I know Duke's always had fans, but most people it
was a little bit like Notre Dame football, you know,
(21:28):
and Marcus Freeman has changed und Dame football, where people
are rooting for Notre Dame to win. They don't view
them as a team that doesn't belong. They view them
a little bit more as maybe not the little engine
that could, but the medium sized the engine they could.
Cooper Flag playing on a sprained ankle a week from
Saturday or Sunday. You know a kid who is going
(21:50):
to be the number one overall pick regardless of whether
he plays or whether he doesn't play. And that's after reclassifying, right,
he could be a senior in high school. He just
does nothing but breathe likability into the Blue Devils. So
here was the call in the game when he when
he went down with the spring nkel.
Speaker 7 (22:09):
Three, no good.
Speaker 9 (22:10):
Cooper Flagg has the rebound after the mist shot by
Jaden Mousta.
Speaker 7 (22:13):
Oh that's not good and flag is down.
Speaker 9 (22:15):
Not good, flag is down and laying on his stomach
now rolls to his back under the basket on the
right side.
Speaker 5 (22:22):
He went high for the rebound, landed. He's holding his
left ankle that he wants help to the bench.
Speaker 3 (22:29):
Show my goodness.
Speaker 9 (22:30):
Well, in the immediate moment, it looks less than ideal
because he couldn't put weight on it at first. Now
he's put his left foot on the floor and is
trying to put some weight on the left leg, but
he is limping and heavily limping as he comes off
the floor.
Speaker 2 (22:45):
Stug Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's it's
really kind of interesting here. Have you had you think
about it. That's Bob Balvano, I believe on the call,
who was on the play by play N kind of
like Kevin Winter, but I don't think he calls games
for ESPN Radio anymore.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
I don't know anyway, It's one of.
Speaker 2 (23:07):
Those deals where this kid is that good, is that watchable?
And I had told you guys that I thought the
Caitlin Clark was She was the Beatles and she remains
as such. But there's gonna be a bit of a
vacuum without her. And I thought the NCAA term would
would benefit substantially in the men's side from Cooper Flag playing.
(23:29):
He'll play, but is he peak powers Cooper Flag. I
don't know the answer to that. Stug Gottlieb show here
on Fox Sports Radio. I want to play for you
something that Doug Whaley said. Doug Whaley is former general
manager of the Buffalo Bills. He was on a Pittsburgh
radio station. He had this to say about Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 8 (23:48):
If I'm Omar Kahn and I'm the Pittsburgh Steelers, one
you shouldn't be surprised, and two you have to sit
down and really think about do we want to sign.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
Up for this?
Speaker 8 (23:59):
Because he's set on the table in the president early
it's all about Aaron Rodgers and it has nothing to
do with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's going to hold the
whole franchise hostage on waiting for him to make a decision.
But that's par for the course when you deal with
a guy like Aaron Rodgers. So you have to make
sure you really want this not only in your locker room,
(24:21):
but to be the face of your franchise. It's not
gonna be the Pittsburgh Steelers anymore. It's gonna be Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 3 (24:26):
Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
Yeah, you know, I think that's a little far afield.
I want to venture a little bit of a different guess. Okay,
let's kind of workshop this one for a second. I
think Aaron Rodgers wants to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
But I also think that Mike Tomlin said, hey, dude,
if you're gonna do it, you're gonna do it our way. Right,
(24:52):
You're gonna do it. You're gonna do it our way.
We're not doing Pat McAfee. You know, we're not no
showing for OTA's, We're not doing any of that other stuff.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
You're gonna do it. You're gonna do it our way.
Speaker 2 (25:05):
And you know, everybody's seen I think the viral photo
of Aaron Rodgers with the with the blanket around him.
Speaker 3 (25:13):
Right, you've seen that, right, Aaron Rodgers with the blanket
around him. And I just think that that.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
Looks like a guy who you know, like it's one
of those Colin Cowhert has one of the funniest rants
I remember. I don't know if he's broken this out
a long time. You guys ever heard this one where
he said, like, if you're thin and in shape and
you're in your car and you're at a stop light
and you're eating, and you pull up alongside somebody who's thin,
(25:42):
in great shape. You're like, look at him, he's on
the go. He doesn't have time for anything. He's probably
going to another workout, right, look at him, he's he's
just he's eating and he's moving. Whereas same car, same
pull up. It's someone who's overweight eating. You go, look
of that fat so right, just stuff in his face.
Speaker 3 (26:03):
It's just good.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Just eat at a table like the rest of us.
And I mean that because look at Aaron Rodgers. If
you have a if you if you like Aaron Rodgers,
and he's got a blanket around himself and he's got
he's got air pods in. You're just sitting there going
like Aaron Rodgers. Man, he's having a walk. He's probably
listening to some podcast, maybe getting some thoughts on meditation,
(26:28):
it's catching up on life, walking.
Speaker 3 (26:29):
On the beach in Malibu. Good for him.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
If you don't, you're like, look at that guy air
pods in. Doesn't want to hear the world blanking around
him because he's soft. Just like, who does he think
he is? So I don't know what the answer is,
but I can tell you that one, like any type
of decision that you're gonna make, if you're Aaron Rodgers,
(26:53):
do I play?
Speaker 3 (26:54):
Do I not play?
Speaker 2 (26:55):
And do I play in a way in which I
kind of sacrifice all freedom an ego, especially when I've
been about freedom. You take him in and think about it.
Do I really want to do this? Because once you
commit to doing it, you're doing it. Look, do I
agree with Doug Whaley on some aspect that.
Speaker 3 (27:11):
You're waiting on Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 2 (27:13):
Yeah, but guess what you wait on any big time quarterback. Yeah,
the Pittsburgh Steelers, you haven't had a viable quarterback since
probably the next to last or two years to last,
when you had Ben Roethlisberger his last year. I mean,
he didn't want to go under center, never turned us
back to the defense, didn't you know, thought he was
gonna get hurt, wasn't all in and didn't have you know,
(27:36):
didn't have.
Speaker 3 (27:37):
Ab out there.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
You go back probably two years previously, it's probably been
what seven years since they had a big time quarterback
in Pittsburgh. And oh yeah, by the way, that was
the last time that they were viable in the playoffs.
So yeah, you're gonna wait a little longer, Wait a
little longer. Jason, you are an advocate for Aaron Rodgers
(28:01):
mostly because of his desire to call bs on everything right,
which is something that you truly appreciate. But when you
see Aaron Rodgers in a blanket, AirPods on walking down
the beach, what do you think he's doing?
Speaker 5 (28:15):
Yeah, I think he's into something. Probably the Joe Rogan podcast.
I think Joe had Antonio Brown on this week interesting conversation.
I don't think Aaron was thinking about football or cared
about football in that moment. And my interest in Aaron
Rodgers is this. This is why I appreciate Aaron Rodgers
(28:36):
because in like ten or fifteen years, if we're still
talking about sports on the radio, we're gonna be like,
there was a guy at the height of his game
in America's most popular sport who said what was ever
on his mind, politically incorrect or not. And that kind
of candidness is welcomed in a world of robotic quarterbacks.
(29:01):
If you watch the Netflix special Quarterback, one thing is
common between all the four that were featured. They're all
robots that are uninteresting. They're articulate, but they're not very
I don't know, there's nothing engaging about them. They do
one thing really well, and speaking or being interesting isn't
(29:24):
one of them. Aaron Rodgers is the exception to all
of that. So that has always intrigued me about Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 3 (29:34):
I again, I don't.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
It's one of those things like, hey, if you want
freedom of speech, you gotta understand sometimes freeda of speech
is going to be somebody saying the exact opposite thing
you want to hear. That's how it works, right, that
is how it works. So I hear you on that one,
and in many parts I agree with you on that one,
which is like do people understand how unique this is?
Speaker 3 (30:00):
Again?
Speaker 2 (30:01):
And you know me, Jaysto, I thought that the that
you know, turning it into you know, the media making
things up with the lie about the code vaccine, I
thought that was that was awful.
Speaker 3 (30:12):
I thought he lost a lot of people. But in general,
and he's generally a conspiracy theorist.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
You know that, he's a whatever you say, he's going
to try and find the opposite answer, just to find
the opposite answer. That said, it is unique to have
a guy at the peak of his profession just a
unique sort of Unicorn type of player in person who
chooses to speak his mind on topics.
Speaker 3 (30:39):
Where somebody else.
Speaker 2 (30:40):

I low what he got? What's in the press?
Speaker 6 (32:09):
Yeah, real sad news and we all got just a
short time before this show began, best selling author and
sports commentator John Feinstein passing away at the age of
sixty eight.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
We started the show kind of talking about it. I
just he was so talented, so talented as a writer,
and you know, I guess I'm still a little bit
in shock.
Speaker 5 (32:49):
I think we all are.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
Suddenly, literally right before the show, right before the show,
Jason is like, can you believe John Finstein's like, what
do he say?
Speaker 3 (32:57):
What did he tweet? What did he do? It's like, no,
he passed away. Like what, I'll tell you. One that
was great, A good walk spoiled, really good, really at golf.
Speaker 6 (33:11):
Book Actually abu huh no, no, go ahead, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
I just that was it was phenomenal, phenomenal Civil War,
which is the Army Navy book. He wrote, the Quarterback Book.
You know, I know you guys like the Punch. You
know the Punch is great because you know so I
you see people on social media go, hey, if you
want NBA players, you want people to go watch the NBA,
(33:37):
let him fight, Like okay, then you have to understand
the history of the NBA. Read the book The Punch,
you know, next man Up taught me so much about
the NFL. H. I just there's so many good ones.
Speaker 6 (33:53):
And you know what, I don't know if you've read
this one before it, Doug, but if not, I highly
recommend it as well as recommending it for everyone out there.
He wrote a different type of book called One on
One Behind the Scenes with the Greats in the Game,
and it was basically a complete book about his process
(34:14):
of interviewing and reporting and relationships and everything that went
into the process of writing these incredible works, obviously including
A Season on the Brink, but also talking about the
way that he covered sort of a golden era of
(34:35):
college basketball for the Washington Post back in the eighties,
where they devoted the resources for him to go cover
all the best college basketball games and matchups in the country.
And it was also Doug, as you will know, a
different world in a different era in terms of access
that reporters and writers got to players and coaches back
(34:58):
then that you would never have have today.
Speaker 2 (35:02):
Well, as I shared with with you guys. I mean
I literally texted him like I have your next bestseller,
and uh, He's like, I'll call you.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
And he called me.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
It was three days ago and I was in the
middle of a meeting and I pressed that call you
back button, and you know, I just knew i'd get around.
You know, it's like one of those things like Okay,
I gotta I gotta drive, I got a couple of
things to do, I got some time this you know,
end of this week.
Speaker 3 (35:33):
Well I'll be watching basketball. Maybe I'll did this weekend whatever,
and yeah, you just yeah, terrible.
Speaker 6 (35:40):
I think something else that made it so stunning. I mean,
it was stunning on its own merits, just because of
how sudden it was. But it happened during what I
would have to imagine was his favorite time of the year,
the peak of college basketball season with conference to tournaments.
Speaker 2 (35:56):
Yeah, he wrote a book on the UH on the
Patrio League, which is just I loved it. And there
was a couple of years where I covered the Patriot
Legue when I was at CBS. We did Cbsports Network
and I remember doing the Petri League championship and I
referenced it and it was He actually called me when
I was driving home from Bucknell. It's like, I really
appreciate you referencing my book as I will. It's like
(36:17):
I didn't know anything about the Patrio League till I
I read your book on it.
Speaker 3 (36:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (36:21):
That's the other thing. He unconventional subject matters that he
made interesting to the average sports fan and brought light too,
I mean, particularly in college basketball, but all across the
sporting spectrum as well. Well. Here's another item from college basketball.
It happened yesterday. I kind of flew under the radar,
(36:42):
but it involves Northwestern head coach Chris Collins. And a
rant against the Big Ten Conference. Now, moments ago they
lost in the second round of the Big Ten Conference
tournament to Wisconsin. But yesterday in the opening round they
beat Minnesota. And here's what Northwestern head coach Chris Collins
had to say after that victory. Kind of unconventional. Listen,
(37:04):
our guys are just a tough group of guys.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
You know.
Speaker 10 (37:06):
They've had a lot thrown at him. Even last night.
They put us in a hotel. The rooms were a
thousand degrees. There was no ac in the hotel in
our guys rooms were eighty five degrees. And that's where
the league puts you. So every way they turned, they're
trying to get us, and our guys just are a
resilient bunch.
Speaker 6 (37:24):
So how about that a Big Ten hotel room temperature
conspiracy theory? To wrap up this edition of the press,
they get out there and pressed.
Speaker 7 (37:35):
That was the press smoke them out.
Speaker 3 (37:37):
Yeah. I haven't reached that level of being that neurotic,
but soon enough.
Speaker 2 (37:46):
By the way, they were gonna play Christmas Team next year,
which would be awesome. I'm a big Chris fan. Plus,
since they redid Welsh Ryan, it's one of my favorite gyms.
My favorite redo of anyone in the country.
Speaker 3 (37:57):
It's really cool.
Speaker 2 (37:58):
All right, Well, enjoy the hoops. Back tomorrow. We'll get
you ready for selection Sunday. We'll see what happens with
