Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the bonus with Doug Gottlieb, What.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Dog got the show?

Speaker 3 (00:13):
And the bonus Fox Sports Radio aheart radio at Welcome, Welcome,
Welcome in. Well, we got some potential cowboy news. We'll
get to that in the Fox. We have this weird
handling of Mark Andrews poor end to the game this weekend.

(00:34):
We got Big Games Championship weekend this weekend, and people
saying that Jayden Daniels is no longer rookie. We've got
a lot of things to get to in the pod.
But you know, in the year of learning, and that's
the only thing I can tell you that this is
at at Green Bay. We lost last night to i UI,
that's Indiana University Indianapolis, and they're a team that.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
New coach.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
He comes from the Division two level side, the older
team than ours older and last time we played them
we lost by seven or nine at their place, and
we felt like having played so well for thirty two
thirty four minutes. On Sunday against Youngstown State, we led
by ten points with nine and a half to go

(01:15):
before losing by four. We felt like, hey, this is
our opportunity. We had three straight home games and weren't
healthy and fell apart against Robert Morris or healthy and
fell apart late against Youngstown State, one of the best
teams in our league. Well, IU INDI comes in like,
all right, this is a game we can compete with.

(01:37):
And they shot ten of fourteen from three in the
first half, ten of fourteen, and like, the first thing
is you learn, hey, man, let's tip your cap, like
I don't care if it's an empty gym or if
nobody guards guys. And they're a good three point shooting team.

(01:59):
You know, if you shoot ten of fourteen in a
game in one half of basketball, you know, barring a
ridiculous number of turnovers, you're going to do really really well,
really well. That's the first thing. The second part to
it is we just didn't have the proper level of

(02:22):
energy and intensity. And this is like the real challenge
to this level of basketball is obviously, you're playing without
your best player. That's always going to be hard. You're
playing with a young, inexperienced roster, and you have an
inexperienced coach that's going to be hard. None of that
stuff is easy, none of it. But the reality is

(02:50):
that at this level you're going to lose a lot
of games in a non conference and you have to
keep them focused null in because you know in conference
play now you're more at your level, you should be
more than competitive.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Well for us, you double down.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
On the fact that you don't. We didn't have any
gimmes at a conference, and the one that you would
think might be a gimmey would be a D two
team that's really really good, and we had a bunch
of things go wrong. We end up losing after leading
by thirteen in the second half. But the weight of

(03:29):
losing is really hard for guys to process, and especially
when I think I view it as actually a good thing.
Last night, we just didn't have the juice.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
We just didn't. There's no.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
You know, it was one of those nights to where
if I didn't yell and scream and excuse my language,
but motherfucked them up and down because they just you know,
I look, did I get angry and did I tryvate them?

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Of course, of course.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
But the world feels like a weight on their shoulder.
The losses feel like a weight in their shoulder. So
I can't be fake and super like nonchalant, positive. Everything's great, fellas,
But I think in hindsight and it's weird how it happens.
Like we had good practices, We had a good little
meeting the day before, one day, you know, one and

(04:26):
a half days of prep, pretty good energy, kept it,
kept it tight, you know, didn't have on the floor long.
But in the locker room before the game, the coaches
and when the managers like, feels like they're flat.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
And warm ups huh.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Then the first couple minutes of the game felt like
we were really flatten. And so much of sports is
about confidence. They start hitting shots because we gave them
more opportunities than we should have.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
Then they get super confident.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
In the second half, they had some really hard shots,
but they had hit ten fourteen, and many of them
good looks in the first half, not by design of
our defense. And by then the die was cast. So
what did I learn? You learn about the emotions of
a really, really hard loss. And I'm not taking anything

(05:20):
away from au INDI that guy did a good job.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
They were ready to play.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
They shot the crap out of the basketball, I mean,
just unbelievable shooting. As a team, they have a player
who's hit nine threes in conference games, and they played
like twelve of them. He's hit four against us. You're like, what,

(05:46):
But but what you learn is and I already knew it,
but you learn it's like so much of it is
about confidence, so much of it about getting them at
the right level.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
And whatever we did, they were just flat last night.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
I know they fought and fought and fought, and I'm
still I'm proud of the guys for fighting. In some
of the guys, there's there's some instances where they didn't
play as well or they did actually play well in spurts,
and there are a lot of guys that are really improving.
But gosh, that was hard because you know, we we

(06:25):
put so much into it and still came up short.

Speaker 1 (06:27):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (06:37):
Let's Get to the Fox Says and Now.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Every day at this time in the Bonus Podcast, we
play for your portion of a previous show on Fox
Sports Radio Fox Sports One.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
We call it what does the Fox Say?

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Here's Emmanuacho and Shady McCoy talking about Mark Andrews whether
or not he should have made himself available to the media.

Speaker 4 (06:58):
I disagree with everything you say until the ending, and
I think all that what's that ends, well, the ending
of if Andrews comes out and puts out his own
statement to the fans, to all them, people will whenever he.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Wants to, to some degree, whatever he wants to.

Speaker 4 (07:11):
I don't know that.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
I don't know that.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
What I do believe you owe something to his fans. Now,
fans don't sweat like we sweat.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
They don't bleed like we bleed.

Speaker 4 (07:19):
They don't break bones like we break bones, they don't
tear tendons like we don't. But they do spend their
hard money to the games, and they stand there in
the frigid temperature, Mark Andrews, a lot of fans we're
at that game in support of you and support a
little bit salute to that whole team. So when you
drop it, just go up there and say something, because
even fans are looking for closure, to go up there

(07:40):
and say something.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Whatever.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
That's something is now where I disagree with you, but
I'll not even let us slide because what is this?
Don't let us look where I disagree with you. Is
the media keeps the ecosystem of the sport going if
if the facility ceases to exist and every show ceases
to exist and broadcast sets to exist, Yeah, you can
still play games, but nobody's going to be watching, so no,
fans don't necessarily because there's nothing broadcast. Like the reason

(08:05):
the salary cap growth is because the media grows, so
you cannot give a players say, I don't want The
reason the pockets is fat like they are is because
of the meetia.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Okay, I I don't know why he has to apologize
to anybody. What does that do? What does that do?

Speaker 2 (08:29):
You know?

Speaker 3 (08:30):
I mean, Lamar Jackson owned his own turnovers, but I
don't remember a moment where he had to apologize, you.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Know, and he's a quarterback.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
The thing with with with Mark Andrews, like, do you
want a guy to face the media? Yeah, but you
also have to understand that we don't have a Does
anybody have a negative track record on a guy who.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Doesn't want to who doesn't want to meet the media?

Speaker 5 (09:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Right?

Speaker 3 (09:00):
Is he a guy who's against the media. My guess
is again it's just a guess. Is Mark Andrews is
more devastated than any human being over his last drop.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
And his funnel. That's just a guess. Okay.

Speaker 3 (09:16):
I don't know Mark personally, but I know people who
know Mark, and everyone I know who I've ever heard
of talk about Mark swear by him as a human being.
And during those moments it's really hard. Now you may say, hey,
quarterbacks have to meet the media. Why doesn't Mark Andrews.
The proper answer to that is because they're the quarterback, right.

(09:38):
The quarterback is the spokesman, the face, the everything for
the team. That's the way it goes. And Lamar handled
it well, took ownership of it.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Obviously.

Speaker 3 (09:46):
He pointed out the turnovers killed him and Mark was
part of the turnover problem.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
But so is Lamar. But that's my takeout it.

Speaker 6 (09:53):
Do I I think, though, Doug, there's been like this, Uh,
there's been this strange thing going on where and you
were one of them like criticizing or calling that a
choke job or crushing Mark Andrews is like a sacred
cow like and is it because he's a good guy.

(10:16):
I mean, Bill Buckner, by all accounts, was a wonderful
human being who got crushed for choke in the World Series,
you know, the Golden State Warriors. They were a bunch
of nice guys. They lost three to one and were
crushed for it, like I don't know, like John van Dervelt.
But this week, which is ironic because the biggest shit

(10:37):
talker of them all is the leader of the Free
world again this week, and for whatever reason, the media
has backed off of Mark Andrews. I wonder why that is.

Speaker 2 (10:50):
Why do you think.

Speaker 6 (10:52):
I just explained it. I have no idea. I don't know.
Is it because he's a decent dude? Like I said,
Bill Biden is a good guy.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
I don't think the media has I think social media
has been ridiculously harsh on him, and so I think
the media, I think most people in the media, myself included.
You know, we go look at our timelines for stories
and crazy stuff pops up and you're like, whoa. You
almost feel like, man, this is a little overtime. So
I think you overcompensate. My guess is some of it's

(11:21):
overcompensating for how harsh social media.

Speaker 6 (11:23):
Is interesting and I wonder if that's the new wave here.

Speaker 2 (11:30):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
I don't know that that will be that will be
interesting stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Let's
get to Dan Patrick talk about the ratings for the
college football Title Game.

Speaker 5 (11:42):
The College Football Title Game ratings were down. Probably a
couple of reasons for that. As we said, you know,
a Monday night after football games over the weekend. Inauguration
was that night. I can see why they would be
even though you do Ohio State and Notre Dame. Imagine

(12:02):
if you didn't have Ohio State and or Notre Dame
in there. But the ratings were down. Not surprised. They
got to fix that. You know, college football has This
is an interesting offseason. It's not the most important offseason.
I think that'll be the following year when they decide
what they're going to do. As far as expanding the playoffs,

(12:22):
maybe to fourteen, I think they got to get the
seeding down. Just because you win your conference doesn't mean
that you get a first round by I mean, there's
some things that they can clean up here. But the contract,
the new contract goes into effect in twenty twenty six.
But as far as the national title game, we suggested,
why not on a Thursday night prior to the divisional games.

(12:46):
You know, there was such a long stretch in between,
and your I don't know, you just kind of you
lose that you get lost in that vortex that's known
as the NFL.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
I agree, I just I thought after were four games
there was a little football fatigue, and I did think
there wasn't enough time for a build up to it.
I also think some of it is team dependent, right,
is you had the Notre Dame is a national name
in drawswell, and Ohio State's a national name and drawswell.
It is not Texas, it is not even obviously not

(13:21):
Bama or Georgia that you know, if you have two
regions of the country kind of handled.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
But just like the Seeds, this is year.

Speaker 3 (13:32):
One, and it also wasn't I don't know, it wasn't
a game of glamour, right You had a Notre Dame
team that had lost to Northern Illinois and you have
an Ohio State team that had lost to Michigan. And
so though the college football fan knows Ohio State is
right there with in any conversation the best teams in

(13:53):
the country all year long, and Notre Dame is not
far off, I think the the layman still sees Notre
Dame as a they're not really good enough and Ohio
State not even being the Big Ten champion. That's reasonable.
So I think there's a lot of reasons to it.

(14:13):
But I do think that the third day of three
days of football, and also, can we also be honest
when you watch two days in the NFL and then
you watch college football, college football looks jav It just does,
and I think that hurts it. Whereas when it stands
alone by itself, I think it looks different and better.

(14:37):
Here's Colin Cowherd talking about the report that the Cowboys
are close to hiring Brian Schottenheimer.

Speaker 7 (14:43):
We are watching the fall of a great American institution.
He's not even interviewing for other jobs. Nothing against him.
Nice guy, three jobs, five seasons, never been a head coach,
never really been a top candidate for a head coach,
but Jerry likes him. But seven and ten football teams
don't move off a coach and then hire the offensive

(15:04):
coordinator who didn't call plays. I've never even heard of that.
I mean, in any industry, you do not let good
people leave the building, right like we all know, like
Liam Cohen is this kid at Tampa, the resurrection of
Baker Mayfield. He went and interviewed for the Jacksonville job.
He said no, thank you. He was such a good candidate.
The owner of Jacksonville fired the general manager who couldn't

(15:27):
close the deal. He goes back to Tampa and they're
going to make him the highest paid coordinator in the
league offensively or Ben Johnson, who's going to show up
twenty five minutes on our show. He was like the
leading candidate for four jobs. Brandon Schuttenneimer wasn't a candidate
for any other job. So it just illustrates the directionless
state of the Cowboys. Mike McCarthy, a super Bowl winning
coach to Dion Sanders, a very promising college coach, to

(15:52):
an offensive coordinator in the building for a seven to
ten team that didn't call plays. What are we doing?

Speaker 3 (16:00):
The hire seems bizarre to me as well it does.
I would guess that it's a backup plan to figure
out what happens if, uh if Philly wins this weekend
and you want to give it to a Cowboy who's
their offensive coordinator, right that that feels like their plan A.

(16:20):
And they're keeping Broad and Shot and Himer warm just
in case that deal doesn't make that'd be my guess
if it goes to Brian Schottenheimer, seems like an oddfit.
Doesn't schematically because I'm guessing that, uh it, it matches
with how Dak thinks he should play, But it seems
like a very very oddfit.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
That's what the Fox said.

Speaker 1 (16:42):
What does say?

Speaker 3 (16:46):
Let's find out who or what is annoying Jason Stewart.

Speaker 1 (16:51):
And now it's your.

Speaker 6 (16:53):
Annoying it, Doug. One of the one of the many
angles this week as we head into the NFC's championship
weekend is Jaden Daniels. Can he become the first rookie
to play in a Super Bowl? Well, he didn't want

(17:14):
any of the answer, but so after this answer, I'm
going to tell you what this reminded of. It's one
of the biggest things that annoy me when it comes
to what analysts say about the NFL. Go ahead, what.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
Would it mean to you if you were the first
wikie quarterback to take a team to the Super Bowl?

Speaker 5 (17:33):
Oh?

Speaker 8 (17:33):
Man, I'm not even thinking that far. It will obviously
be a blessing, but you know, I'm just focused on,
you know, how can I be better day by day?

Speaker 6 (17:41):
All Right? So I'm just going to do an impression
of an analyst who obviously is not creative or unimaginative
coming out of that SoundBite. Go ahead and play that
sound bite again.

Speaker 4 (17:53):
What would it mean for to you if you were
the first wikie quarterback to take a team to the
Super Bowl?

Speaker 8 (17:58):
Uh man? Not even thinking that far. It will obviously
be a blessing. But you know, I'm just focused on,
you know, how can I be better?

Speaker 6 (18:05):
Day by day? I got a message for Daniels, I
got a message for you. You're not a rookie anymore.
And then they'll say it. The analyst will say that
like they were the first person to ever say it,
and then usually there's a reaction among the room like,
oh man, what a great interesting thing to say. Maybe

(18:28):
the first hundred people that said it twenty five years ago, whatever,
maybe that was interesting. But it's maybe the biggest cliche
and it does the opposite of what it's supposed to do.
If you ever say that as an analyst, now, that
tells me that you either didn't put work into what
you wanted to say, or that you just aren't very imaginative.

(18:50):
So saying a rookie playing in the playoffs, is not
a rookie anymore. Very annoying.

Speaker 3 (18:58):
Uh yeah, it's super super cliche, super cliche. You know,
same thing in college with the you get to the
end of the year, freshman's not a freshman more. Hey,
you're not a freshman anymore.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (19:08):
And the idea that Jack like you invented something that
has been said for years is also comical.

Speaker 6 (19:15):
It's usually the analyst two that uh doesn't use the
the shortened NFL usually says, this is the National Football League.
Ah yeah, and it's it does two things. It kills
more seconds of time, and it makes it makes you
sound authoritative, like I played, and this is the National

(19:36):
Football League. You know you're he's not a rookie anymore.
So I don't know if you saw this, but Andy
Reid had something nice to say about somebody he worked with. Now,
the problem with Andy Reid being a nice guy like this,
you know, he called what's his face? Eric b enemy

(20:01):
the same thing. Like the problem with saying that everybody's
a great guy is that nobody's a great guy. So
you have to take this with a grain of salt.
But this is Andy Reid, when asked about Steve Spagnola's
head coaching prospects.

Speaker 9 (20:16):
Rather you get a great football coach and a great person.
I think that's probably the most important thing. I mean,
he understands a game, he understands the players, and he
deserves another shot. I'm one of his biggest fans, so
other than his sweet wife, I'm probably right next in
line there. I want him to have every opportunity he
can to do that.

Speaker 6 (20:36):
So I am annoyed by this. A guy that gave
up like an average of forty points a game over
the last two months just got a job yesterday and
he was like one of the hot names to go.
Steve Stagnola has done nothing but lead a two time
defending defense, two time defending championship defense, and you never

(21:00):
hear his name surface And I don't, I honestly don't
know what that is. Is it agism? Is that he's
the wrong color. The Cowboys are going to hire like
the most average white guy possible in Brian Schottenheimer. So
why would Steve Spagnola, after cycle and cycle of head

(21:23):
coaching availabilities here year after year and not be mentioned
more often?

Speaker 3 (21:30):
M hm, that's a great question. I would I would
tell you that one. It's really really hard, really really
hard to really hard to get a job a second
time in the NFL. Like it's one of the things
that we talk about these jobs as if they're easy

(21:52):
to get, you know. That was the thing that bothered
me so much about who is the Eric b Enemy thing?
You know, we like it's a formality, you know, and
it's just not. What's the name of God? He was
the coach of the Broncos for like two years.

Speaker 6 (22:16):
Advance Joseph No, after that, Buddy Hackett, Nathaniel Hackett.

Speaker 2 (22:23):
No, Nathaniel Hackett wasn't the coach I get it real quick.

Speaker 6 (22:26):
The defensive coordinator of the Eagles.

Speaker 3 (22:30):
Yeah, Vic Fangio, Right, Vic Fangio is head coach for
two years. Do you know he's been like in the
NFL for like thirty five years. It's just really hard
to get those jobs. And right now Flavor of the
Month is bringing an offensive guy. But I'm with you
and ce Spagnolo. He's he's been incredible in the job
he's done.

Speaker 6 (22:49):
So we talked about this yesterday. One voter, of all
the Hall of Fame voters, did not include each hero
on his ballot, and as of the taping right now,
unless you know differently that one voter has not surfaced.
Each Row had a Hall of Fame acceptance. I guess

(23:14):
uh interview, and this is what his interpreter said that
Each Row said.

Speaker 10 (23:18):
I was able to receive many votes from the writers.
Grateful for them. There's one writer that I wasn't able
to get a vote from. I would like to invite
him over to my house and while I drink together
and we'll have a good chat. Very very grateful to

(23:42):
be here and thank you.

Speaker 6 (23:44):
Now. Never mind the fact that his interpreter was doing
a Batman impression, or he was doing a Gavim Newsom
doing Batman impression. The guy still hasn't surfaced, so much
so that each Row is like poking fun at the
guy like he is. Maybe it's a woman, but he
has dealt with forty eight hours of people calling him out,

(24:06):
like come forward, like give us your reasoning. Like I
said yesterday, two things will happen. Your reasoning will be
completely unacceptable, and the Writers' Union or Association should consider
taking your Hall of Fame vote away. Remember Mark Jackson
has a MVP vote for the NBA. Remember he misdid

(24:29):
the thing he like missdid the card and like wrote
the All NBA team instead, and he's like, take my
vote away. I mean it, you know, if I'm going
to be that kind of I don't know cavalier about it.
Just take my vote away. We should take this guy's
vote away unless he has like a very compelling reason.
Maybe he's got like some great reasoning that I want

(24:51):
to hear. So the fact that he hasn't shown his
face yet is annoyed.

Speaker 3 (24:56):
Uh, that is pretty annoying. That that is super annoying.
And I love the I actually I'm just still laughing
at the Gavin Newsom doing a Batman impression.

Speaker 2 (25:09):
That's pretty good that.

Speaker 10 (25:11):
I was able to receive many votes from the writers
and grateful for them.

Speaker 6 (25:17):
Uh maybe he was inhaling some like some smoke from
the fires or something. He's got. My voice has been
cracking a lot because it's been so dry out.

Speaker 2 (25:26):
Yeah. Uh, it's so good. Give me one more.

Speaker 6 (25:31):
No, that's it. The voter hasn't surfaced. Steve Spagnola not
getting opportunities and hey you're not a rookie anymore.

Speaker 3 (25:41):
Yeah, I think, hey you're not a rookie anymore is
pretty comical, right, Like.

Speaker 2 (25:47):
The idea that you're not a rookie anymore.

Speaker 3 (25:48):
Like you know, he's never conceptionalized playing in the NFC
championship game, let alone a super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
You're not a rookie anymore.

Speaker 3 (25:57):
First, super cliche and the number one thing you're taking
when you begin to be analysis, don't be cliche.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
It's not an original thought.

Speaker 3 (26:05):
And as you pointed out, everyone who says it acts
like they're the first ones to ever say it.

Speaker 2 (26:11):
And he is still a rookie. So shut the fuck up. Yeah,
I know, why are we doing this?

Speaker 6 (26:21):
You do.

Speaker 1 (26:24):
Because we can.

Speaker 8 (26:27):
So.

Speaker 6 (26:27):
Nick Young, I guess appears on Gilbert at Arenas's podcast.
It's a pretty outrageous podcast. I do want to tell
listeners that Nick Young is eating Eminem's or something. He's
eating something while he's talking. As annoying as that is,
So if this sounds like there's something getting in the
way of his words, he's eating Eminem's while giving this

(26:51):
take about pat Riley.

Speaker 11 (26:54):
Bulls. First, then Phil Jackson came.

Speaker 1 (26:56):
Phil Jackson came.

Speaker 11 (26:57):
And saved Kobe Sek motherfucker Steve Kurrins came to the Warriors,
bet righty doing the same shit everybody else doing then
it is mad, y'all gotta run, get your fat ass
up and around. God damn man, I wanna go there,
