Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Here's in
the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What Up Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. In the
Bonus podcast, I just found out that John Finstein passed away.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Oh God, I feel awful.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
So this is John fine Stein is the foremost sports
author of my lifetime. No disrespect to Mitch Album and
some of the other guys that have wrotten, really written
really really good books. He wrote Season on the Brink,
a Season Inside. He wrote so many of these. He
wrote The Army Navy One Forever's Team. I mean, I
could just kind of go on it. Next man up.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
And uh.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Two weeks ago he and I texted back and forth
and he said he was working on a book with
a bunch of different coaches, and I said, I have
the text, John, do you want your next best seller?
And he says, I'm all ears And I said, come
follow me around for a year, and he said, I'm intrigued.

(01:19):
I'll call you next week. And I was in the
middle of exit meetings this week and he called me
and I hadn't yet called him back.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
And he died today, And ah, wow, wow, I.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Just listen if you like, if you like sports, you
like reading by all of his books. They're really good.
And he wasn't always an easy guy, you know, he
and I when we were both at CBS Sports Radio,
he got let go and he kind of lashed out
a little bit and and again wasn't the easiest guy
at times to be around. But I mean this, and

(02:05):
it's not because he passed away. I said this to
him when we when you know, in regards to the
idea of writing a book, which is you're the foremost
sports writer sports novel writer in my lifetime, I said,
I don't care if I make a penny off it.
There's anybody who's gonna write it.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
You're gonna write it. And now he can't wow.

Speaker 4 (02:31):
I think that there's a I think him being the
lead in for the Jim Rome Show on CBS Sports
Network was the result of him being a frequent guest
host on The Jim Rome Show. I worked with John
dozens of times. I produced when when Jim was on vacation,

(02:53):
I did shows with John Feinstein. I got to know
him personally. I've read his books. Difficult that you point
out is what I really liked about the guy. Yeah,
he's spare, he's what's the word for. He suffered no fools, Yes,
he cared. He suffered no fools. And the older I get,

(03:14):
the more I appreciate that I the more, the less
tolerance I have for pretense. And Feinstein was one of
a kind.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
One, one of a kind. Wow, all right, let's let's
let's get to the Foxes.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
Let's get to what the Fox says and now.

Speaker 1 (03:44):
Say every day.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
This time that I got leap showing the bonus podcast
play for your previous portion of Fox Sports Trader Fox
Sports One Show. Here's Dan Patrick talking about the Utah
Jazz getting fined by the NBA for tanking.

Speaker 5 (03:54):
They're obviously tanking. They would love to get Cooper flag
in Utah. Brought this up before, might have brought it
up to the commissioner a couple of years ago. Could
you have the bottom two teams play each other for
the number one pick? Could you have the bottom four
teams play? And then you know, once again, you can
add this there's a real tune in factor. If you

(04:17):
have bad teams playing for the chance to draft the
number one player, you get Cooper Flag. The Cooper Flag
Sweepstakes have Cooper Flag there. You're going to tune into that.
And let's say you have four teams, so let's say
the worst team plays the fourth worst or whatever or however,

(04:38):
then or you have the two worst teams and then
the other two teams and then they play for the
number one pick in the draft. But the NBA loves
the build up to the lottery. Once again, they're in
the entertainment business. That's a tune in factor. But if
you said, I'm watching these games where these guys have
to play hard, now, you may not want to watch

(04:58):
Utah versus Washington.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
I would if I knew.

Speaker 5 (05:02):
Imagine that's the game and Cooper Flagg is there where
the winner gets Cooper Flag.

Speaker 1 (05:08):
It's pretty good.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Oh, that would be really cool. I love that idea.
Dan's had a lot of ideas. That's a really good one.
And obviously you mentioned that before Cooper Flag got hurt
sprained his ankle, but it still remains like he is
the Great White Hope labar Arrington and Brady Quinn had
this exchange about Russell Wilson why he hasn't signed with
the team yet.

Speaker 6 (05:29):
I've never met Russell Wilson, so I don't want to
judge him. He just comes across as the type of
dude that doesn't know that he rubs you the wrong
way because in his mind, he's like, really a good dude.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
He seems like a nice guy. Probably due time.

Speaker 7 (05:45):
Yeah, and I'll say it again, for the times I've
been around him, I think what happens, and there's there's
people who do this that they are like this. You know,
Tim Tebow, he was one of those people too that
I think, you know, probably lacked a little bit of
an understanding of you know, some of the way he
tried to play quarterback, the way he tried to be

(06:06):
a teammate. It rubbed some guys the wrong way. Now,
the reality is some guys don't care because they are
who they are and they're genuine in that. I think
Russell is similar in that sense where there's people who
watch him operate or watching them around him, they're like,
may this feels fake or he can't be like this
all the time. It's like, but yeah, he is I've
found that out more in life, where I think there's

(06:28):
some people who just feel convicted and who they are
in some cases.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
Like who's God's called.

Speaker 7 (06:33):
Them to be or who they are is a leader
or a player, and they don't want to change that,
like they're like, this is who I am.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Look, I think that the Russell Wilson kind of plastic
image sort of thing, well, it feels fake to us. Again,
I think that works on Madison Avenue. I think that
works on TV. I just do. He's playing two Super Bowls.
You know, he'll be a Hall of Fame quarterback when

(07:04):
he's done.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
And do I think he's cheesy? Yeah? Do I think
he does?

Speaker 2 (07:10):
This strike me as phony, of course, But again I
think some of it is a little bit like Jason
Stewart's his calling in life is to find whatever the
opposite of bullshit is, right, that's actually your calling in life.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Like I like that too, we all do.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
So maybe we're seeking bullshit where you know, maybe we're
just kind of he's cheesy, he's over the top or whatever,
But that kind of stuff works in TV. I think
the reason he hasn't signed. We talked about this in
the radio show is I think the people want to
sign him as a backup. I think it is, and
I'm sure he doesn't love being the second option to
Aaron Rodgers. But part of it is these teams like
the Browns, we know they're gonna draft a quarterback, the Giants,

(07:49):
if they don't get Aaron Rodgers, they're gonna draft a quarterback.
And that's the part where he has to understand. Am
I going to be a guy who's going to do
what Justin Fields did last year, which is start for
a couple of games until the rookie is ready or
not or not. This is Colin Cowher talking about Michigan
State basketball.

Speaker 8 (08:09):
Michigan State can't score, but in college basketball a lot
of times the offense is basically just dump it down
to the big guy. That's Michigan and Michigan State. Michigan
State can't shoot and will be like one of the
top seeds. So it's you know, in college basketball, there
are very few teams that have offensive depth. You win

(08:30):
with coaching and defense, and sometimes you can have one
great offensive player. Michigan State does not.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
That's true.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Look, they're twenty eighth in offensive rating, okay, which is good,
not great. They're fifth in defensive rating fifth. Obviously, they
played a stellar strength to schedule thirty third, and they're
the eighth ranked team in the country. Again, Ken Palm's
not the end all be all, but it's generally pretty close.
Some of this comes from Colin and I texting back

(09:00):
and forth over the weekend, talk about, Man, they really
can't shoot. No, they're shooting numbers. They don't shoot a
lot of threes, and they don't make a lot of threes.
But there's a lot of ways to win a basketball game,
and if the other team can't score. The metrics that
you need to follow in terms of teams that are
most likely to have success in the first couple of
weekends is defensive breeding. Duke is fourth, Houston is third,

(09:20):
Tennessee is one, Michigan State is five, Iowa State is six,
Saint John's is two, Maryland is eight. Right, those are
your top eight. Let's see how it plays out. That's
what the Fox Says say.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Let's find out who What's annoying Jason Stewart, and now it's.

Speaker 1 (09:52):
Your annoying.

Speaker 4 (09:58):
It. Doug Colman. Hawkins plays for Kansas State. Kansas State
lost their tournament game, and this is what he had
to say after the game.

Speaker 9 (10:08):
These guys haven't experienced some of the days have experienced.
You know, I really wanted to come in.

Speaker 10 (10:15):
And impacked the program. I'm sorry for crying about ship.
That ship hurts. I really wanted to come in and
packed the program, and you know some of the stuff.
The outcome obviously wasn't what we wanted. But you know,

(10:40):
if someone asked me if I regret coming here, I
tell him, you know, I don't regret me.

Speaker 9 (10:48):
My team, the coaching staff, the people I met, and
my heart just raaks for them because, like I said,
they just haven't experienced some of the things I experienced
in my career.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
So here's the deal. If your thing is that's a
teenager he's crying, we shouldn't make fun of it. That's
one thing he's getting paid money. The reason why we
played that cut is because supposedly the crux of his
drama is that he's he got a ton of shit
after signing his ANIL deal and he's been getting criticized

(11:22):
for it and it impacted his play. And my thing
is if you get paid to play something that makes
you a professional. And he's an adult, and just how
gen z is it that a kid in college is
getting paid money and can't handle what comes with that money,

(11:43):
which is criticism.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
Yeah, first of while, he's not a kid, he's twenty
three years old.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
Second of all, you know, it's been well documented that
you know, and I don't know how much money it
actually is, if it's into seven figures again, like there
are some people that purchase that is, Hey, here's a
guy who really really loves his teammates, loves his whatever.
And it's been a hard year. Again, this is I
can't express this well enough. This is not how it's

(12:13):
supposed to be. It's not okay, and we have completely
fucked it up and we have fucked these another generation
up for years to come. Because the other part to it,
what what I don't think we realize is do you
remember the first time you watched HDTV? Do you remember

(12:34):
the first time? I mean it was like early two thousands, right,
you watch AHTV, then you go back to standard deaf,
You're like, how was I ever watching that before?

Speaker 3 (12:43):
Right? Is that is that a fair Is that a
fair statement to make?

Speaker 4 (12:48):
Yep?

Speaker 2 (12:49):
Okay, so you're gonna pay a kid, let's just say
a million dollars I Colemen Hawkins. I mean, he's a
heck of a college player, right, he's big enough to
play maybe the five. He's really a stretch for you know,
he's part of Illinois team that went to the lead
eight last year, goes to Kansas State, gets paid, they
have a disappointing season. He gets all kinds of heat,

(13:10):
none in social media, which these kids aren't equipped for.
But even that part, when you get done and now
Coleman Hawkins, maybe he makes the G League, gets a
two way. Maybe what's more likely is he has to
go and play overseas, which again we say has to
like goes in what's play basketball? Like we'll make probably
six figures going to play overseas. Maybe, you know, I

(13:33):
don't know. One hundred and twenty is first year, which
is a damn good salary. Maybe more I maybe underestimate
because he's twenty three. Maybe he can maybe his agent
can get him two hundred. But when you've been making
a million dollars to play college basketball, and now you're
gonna make two hundred thousand dollars to play professional basketball.
And oh yeah, by the way, if you go and
play as a professional and you stink up the joint

(13:56):
the first month, you know what they do. They send
you home. It's just they don't give a shit. And
they say, oh, you think you should get your money,
sue me right, you're in foreign country, you know, or
you play in the G League. And again you're making
pennies in comparison to the million dollars you may.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Now, look, you make the NBA.

Speaker 2 (14:13):
Obviously, even NBA minimum salary is less than what he's
made this year in college. We have so fucked up
this generation of kid because there were a long list
of people. J Billis is the biggest name, and James's
a friend of mine. I think he's fucking wrong. I
just do. And look, I'm part of it. We're doing it,
you know, we opted in. We're gonna buy part of

(14:36):
rev share like this is how the deal works now.
But the issue with Coleman Hawkins is one none of
them are equipped for what it feels like to be
a professional, and especially now in the social media age,
kids aren't equipped to take criticism anyway, let alone social
media criticism where there's no real guardrails to what people

(14:56):
can say. And then you factor in that next year,
when you think it gets better because now you're a pro,
it actually gets way way harder playing against better competition,
harder rules, harder travel, and you're actually making less money
and you're asked to be a better, more efficient performer
than you were this year. Right, good luck with that shit.

(15:18):
So I think you know the crying, and I understand
you're not sympathetic, and again some of the things that
some of the some of the trash talk, you know,
some of the posturing.

Speaker 3 (15:29):
But this is what's happened.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
We've made what was an imperfect but mostly perfect system
completely fed up for all parties. All parties included.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
Another basketball topic, Kara. We talked about it on the
radio show, But I just want the most annoying thing
about the Cooper flag injury has nothing to do with
Duke's prospects or college basketball's ratings. Selfishly, it just sucks
for me, Like I was looking forward to this kid
that we've been hearing about for five yours playing in

(16:01):
the NCAA tournament against high level competition with the biggest pressure.
I was looking forward to that and if he misses time,
that sucks for me.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
Uh So, what's annoying Cooper Flag's an injury is annoying you?

Speaker 1 (16:15):
Yes?

Speaker 4 (16:16):
For me, for my watchability?

Speaker 3 (16:18):
Got it? Got it? Yeah, you're just selfish.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
But yes, I'm bummed out because he's sprained his ankle.
I don't know what it means. I don't know what
it means in terms of the tournament. My guess is
he doesn't play next weekend. Again, I'm not thankful for it.
But if there's ever you know, a sprained ankle and
there's no break, and it happens on a Thursday, it's
way better than happening on a Sunday. Every day matters.
And then the last part to it is the thing

(16:43):
that I think we're going to learn about Cooper Cooper
Flag that you're gonna like best is he's going to play,
and if he plays, he doesn't play.

Speaker 3 (16:50):
He's the number one.

Speaker 2 (16:51):
Overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft, and yet with
a sprained ankle. Again I don't have I have no
inside information, but that kid's a stud. Mom was a
heck of a player, right like he's gonna play, and
that's what's to me, that's what separates. I've had issues
with kids where the kid wanted to play but a

(17:13):
parent got in his ear and told him not to play.
You're like what, And again, it's all about protecting them.

Speaker 3 (17:19):
For the future. Like what about the team? Now?

Speaker 2 (17:21):
I can almost guarantee Cooper probably you don't not need
to play in the first round.

Speaker 3 (17:26):
How crazy would that have been? We talked about this.

Speaker 2 (17:27):
Actually, you know, Hey, we're gonna win the Horizon League tournament,
then we're gonna win the playing game, then we're gonna
play Duke.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
Would be crazy.

Speaker 2 (17:36):
Though if my team we got to play against Duke
and Cooper didn't play, that would be awesome. Still, probably
don't have a chance, but a lot more of a
chance than we had previously anyone else.

Speaker 4 (17:47):
So, uh, this Bill's former bills GM Doug Whaley or
Doug Whaley Okay, because there's an actor named Frank Wally
was in pulp fiction, great character actor, and I think
he spells his name the way Whaley spells it. So anyways,
Doug Whaley was on a Pittsburgh radio station and he
said this about Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 11 (18:09):
If I'm Omar Kahn and I'm the Pittsburgh Steelers. One
you shouldn't be surprised, and two you have to sit
down and really think about do we want to sign
up for this? Because he's set in the table in
the president early it's all about Aaron Rodgers and it
has nothing to do with.

Speaker 1 (18:26):
The Pittsburgh Steelers.

Speaker 11 (18:27):
He's going to hold the whole franchise hostage on waiting
for him to make a decision. But that's par for
the course when you deal with a guy like Aaron Rodgers.
So you have to make sure you really want this
not only in your locker room, but to be the
face of your franchise. It's not going to be the
Pittsburgh Steelers anymore. It's going to be Aaron Rodgers Pittsburgh Steelers.

Speaker 4 (18:49):
He hits on a great point. You should be educated
and informed by just the recruiting process on how much
of the pain in the ass he's going to be.
I was on I was a single bachelor into my
forties and you meet women and just deciding on a
place to meet for the first time is a pain

(19:11):
in the ass. It's a great foreshadowing for how much
of a pain in the ass they're going to be like,
if they can't do the simplest things without being difficult,
then why are you choosing to be with them? And
here's the problem with Aaron Rodgers. Aaron Rodgers is like
the former hot chick who's still doing hot chick things.

Speaker 2 (19:33):
Uh yeah, yeah, But in this particular case, the Steelers
do need him and won him and it does fit.
And look, we talked about this some of the radio show. Yeah,
he's annoying. It's annoying that he tells us he's going
to get things done quickly, then he takes his sweet time.

(19:53):
But as you point out, this is part for the course.
If you're surprised, that's kind of on.

Speaker 3 (19:57):
You so.

Speaker 4 (20:00):
Being difficult. Then there is the kid at Kansas State YEP,
and the Cooper flag injury sucks.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
I think the Cooper flag injury sucks is the most annoying,
mostly because you've made it about yourself, which is it's
one selfish but two admittedly selfish, But it's annoying that
people will think about themselves and their own betting lines
and their own all the other things when it should

(20:29):
be about the actual player.

Speaker 3 (20:30):
But that's annoyed.

Speaker 1 (20:35):
Why are we doing this because we can.

Speaker 4 (20:43):
Doug. Longtime listeners of this podcast are probably gonna ask
the question, why does he always play this sound? It
seems like any chance he gets to play this sound,
he plays it. And I am fully guilty. I think
this is some of the best sound that we've ever
heard on this podcast. It's an athlete at his rawst,
it's an athlete at his most frustrated, and it was

(21:06):
caught by NFL Films, I think for a receiver on Netflix.
Here's the background. Jimmy what's his name, Garoppolo? Jimmy Groppolo.
He's the backup quarterback for the Rams. They just signed
DeVante Adams. I guess DeVante said something on his way
out of Las Vegas that was not complimentary of g

(21:28):
or Jimmy Garoppolo, Garoppolo, And they asked Jimmy yesterday, what
do you think about the Rams signing Davante. He's like, oh, man,
that's cool, it's great. He's a great player. So he
took the high road. Remember, it all goes back to
this when when Jimmy g was throwing death balls or
whatever you call those passes to receivers and DeVante Adams

(21:52):
was caught with a hot mic.

Speaker 3 (21:53):
I gotta get the fuck out of here for I
lose my fucking life.

Speaker 10 (21:57):
I never hit this many fucking times in my careers.

Speaker 4 (22:01):
Every game I get fucked up.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
Hysterical, hysterical. Yeah, Jimmy gar I love that hot. That's
like one of the great hot moments, hot mic moments
in the history of the NFL. Is it not like
saying your own quarterback who has some reputation to some people,
but inside the actual NFL, the Niners feel like he
lost in the Super Bowl. The Raiders feel like he

(22:26):
stinks right, Like, that's amazing, hot mic moment, amazing. Why
can we play for you? Because we can? All Right,
that's it for the end the Modus Podcast. Check out
the radio show every day three to five Eastern twelve
two Pacific, Fox Sports Radio, I Heart Radio app.
