Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Here's in
the bonus with Doug Gottlieb.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
What up, Doug Gottlieb Show. In the bonus Fox Sports Radio.
Hope you're doing really, really well last night in the
first four. North Carolina, Malliwoke, sy Nego State, and to
those of us and I again, I'm just full transparency.
(00:32):
I don't care who got in the NCAA tournament, Like,
don't care, didn't study it, not paying attention.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
I'm just not That's not my purview.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
I'm out of the bracketology game. I'm out of the
college basketball analysis game.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Right.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
I have two jobs. They're enough, they're great. I just
found the process and you know the storyline, you know,
Bobby Kenningham, I'm not in the room we're discussing North Carolina, No,
but you're in the room discussing everybody else.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
So I mean we'll be doing here really, But.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
I can't say that I care that a crime was committed.
I was more surprised that West Virginia didn't get in.
But as we explain to you on Monday, I think
that's a big product of what we saw last. What
we saw last was North Carolina lose on a lane
violation to Duke granted Cooper flag didn't play, and we
(01:34):
saw West Virginia lose to Colorado, who is the worst
team in the Big twelve on a down year for
Tad Boyle.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
So I just.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
I don't care, and I have also told you and
said so yes yesterday on the radio show, that inclusion
and ability to win are not necessarily the same thing.
But North Carolina, considering how many people had said they
don't belong in their performance would be I think rightfully
(02:10):
put under a microscope, and you don't have to put
on a microscope to see they kicked their crap out
of standing in the state.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
So that that leads us.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
To one of of two things. Either one you're gonna
say the committee got it wrong and clearly they're one
of the best at large.
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Teams in the country.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Or two you're gonna say, this is why the committee
was right to do right to potentially have them out,
because despite what is quite obvious talent, they consistently didn't
play well against the better teams on their schedule.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
So what are we supposed to do with that?
Speaker 2 (02:51):
You know, yes, they have a ton more money, they
have a ton more resources. They're in North Carolina, they
played for national championship a couple of years ago. Like
all those things are in fact true, but they still
had only one quad one win heading the last night's game, And.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Maybe it makes it more frustrating.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
What their season looks like when you consider how well
they played last night, how many shots they they hit
last night, how good their defense was last night in
comparison to the biggest chunk of the season. I guess
I walk away saying, yeah, Carolina, you proved your point,
but you also proved everybody else's point to be true.
(03:34):
And if the committee's point was they're one of the
best teams, so they belong in, they were proven correct.
And if somebody who didn't believe you belonged in because
of merit or lack thereof, I think they're accurate. You know,
if this is your best, why couldn't you play anywhere
near your best on a.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Consistent basis this year?
Speaker 2 (03:57):
I think it's a fair question regardless of which North
Carolin moves on San New State, who you know they've
been able to do it, how everybody's doing it now,
It's gonna be really interesting to see what happens with
the Aztecs. San New State has built up an absolutely dynamic,
dynamic presidence in California. You know, when I was a kid,
(04:19):
it was the safety school to safety schools. You know, like,
if you wanted to go and smoke weed and party,
you went to Chico Humboldt. Those are way up in
the north. And if you really wanted to party you
and you didn't care about school, you went to Sanyo State.
Now SITU State is the most difficult school in the
state of California. State school in the state of California,
(04:41):
and that includes USC not uss in private school, but
that's hard to get into, but UCLA, Berkeley, et cetera.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
It's that hard to get into it.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
And I think in no small part because of the
success of basketball and the attention that's brought and how
they've remade that campus to something really, really cool. But
they don't have a huge amount of NIL and they
don't have a huge amount of TV revenue to you know,
to opt into the biggest, biggest amount possible. So what
(05:12):
happens to this team moving forward in the Mountain West
when you have some other teams like New Mexico who
have more financial commitments from outside the program.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
I think it's going to be really interesting.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Nonetheless, North Carolina one in epic fashion, and I don't
think anybody is questioning their inclusion into the now field
of sixty four.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
Let get to the Fox as and now.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
Say every day of this time, The Doug Gotlieb Show
in the Bonus Podcast would play a portion of a
previous show on Fox Sports Radio or Fox Sports One.
This is Dan Patrick talking about Major League Baseball opening
their season in Japan.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Do I want us exporting opening Day?
Speaker 3 (06:03):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
I understand its business, certainly with the Dodgers. You know,
how about we think of the players you're in spring
training totally chill. Now, let's go to Japan, play a
couple of games they count, and then let's come back
and then.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Let's chill again.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
Tough to manage your staff you're pitching, and I don't
know if the fans in Japan would be that upset
if you said We're going to play two spring training
games over there.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Are they gonna be upset?
Speaker 4 (06:35):
I think just having sho Heeyutani over there, some of
the other players who are from Japan, that would be enough.
We don't need to have Opening Day over there, have
Opening Day here. You can have kind of a faux
opening day. You can have a opening Day. How about
Opening Day there? You go, Yeah, it's a fake opening day,
(06:59):
Opening Day, and you play a couple of games, you
have all the pomp and circumstance and the pageantry, and
then you come back and then you resume spring training.
Everybody benefits.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
I disagree, and I know, and look, we've had this
disagreement on the air with Jason previously. They've done the tours,
they've done the exhibition games, they've done the real games,
and especially with the uniqueness of the Dodgers two Japanese stars,
(07:35):
this is a win. And oh yeah, by the way,
how many times have we talked about Major League Baseball
having too many games where it's boring, you know, and
we just like.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
What do we really get out of it?
Speaker 2 (07:46):
So three games off the schedule and we're complaining about it.
If you're a Dodger fan and you're a season taken over,
you lost three home games. Maybe there's an argument there,
but baseball needs this, and I think it's a huge
win for baseball in Japan to have real, real games,
real games. This is Colin Kwher talking about Aaron Rodgers
(08:09):
and Russell Wilson.
Speaker 5 (08:11):
Vikings looks like they're going to pass on Aaron Rodgers
the Aaron Rodgers waiting game in New York. Russell Wilson
is ready to sign and doesn't have a team. And
it's funny Aaron and Russell. One is all worshiping of
God and one pushed back on his family's religion. One
is hopelessly optimistic to the point of cringey, and the other,
(08:33):
let's be honest, he's like a sad trombone in cleats
half the time. And yet here's Russell and Aaron in
the same boat, a little meedy, and most of the
league not interested. Yet since twenty twenty two, they are
identical quarterbacks. Wins, losses, completion percentage, touchdown, passeray, same guy,
(08:54):
no playoff wins since twenty twenty two. And if you
sign either, you're guaranteed need something. With Russell a new slogan,
let's ride, and with Aaron you will be notified very quickly.
If he's in the room, you're the second smartest person.
And what you find with both is this is not
(09:15):
the NBA. It is not a player controlled league. Even
if a player is a talented quarterback. It is a
league where drama and noise and occasional semi conflict is
bad news, and you will tolerate it when a star
is in his prime.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Yeah again, Look, it's the Are your problems bigger than
your production?
Speaker 3 (09:42):
Are your problems bigger than your production? That's you know?
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Or is the juice? Is this squeeze worth the juice?
There's all kinds of different cliches and expressions for it.
But I think part of part of Minnesota's deal, let's
just be honest because we don't really know, is they
they have a young GM and a really good head
(10:07):
coach who's proven with two different quarterbacks you can throw
for a bajillion yards, and they want to be proven right.
We drafted a guy a little bit higher than people thought,
and JJ McCarthy, and we want to.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
Be proven right.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
So we can make it about Aaron Rodgers, but sometimes
it might be about JJ McCarthy. I do think though,
that we've reached a point to where maybe his problems
are bigger than his production.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
Be short to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
This is Brady Quinn talking about the Vikings in their
quarterback situation.
Speaker 6 (10:45):
Why wouldn't they just say McCarthy's our quarterback. We're not
looking at Aaron Rodgers anymore. It would literally be that simple.
But for some reason, and look and just this isn't
like a shot at Tom Pelsero, because this is Schefter,
this is Ian Rappaport, this is Paul Sarah, this is everyone.
These guys now essentially copy and paste what an agent
(11:08):
or a source of someone kind of says, and they
can refute that. You can try to come at me
with all that. Doug Golly would probably put this on
his show or all that. We've seen callous examples of
mistakes that have been made where guys have literally copied
and paste and left some stuff in there. So what
I'm what I'm pointing out is someone wanted to portray
(11:29):
this message of we're not pursuing Aaron Rodgers at this
time for what reason. I have no idea, Like, if
you're going to commit to McCarthy, commit to him, what
is it at this time? Is there concern maybe come
off his injury, how he's recovering.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Is that?
Speaker 6 (11:44):
Why is there concern that maybe what Aaron's asking for,
where this whole thing is at, is too much for them,
they don't want to do it. I don't know, And
like that struck me as odd based on how this
is worded. And look, maybe I'm reading way too much
into this, but again, when you have the opportunity to
(12:05):
tweet something out that you know is going to make
its round, that is going to make news, I think
you're pretty careful about how you word things. I think
you word them a certain way for a reason.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Yeah, I again, and I appreciate what Brady is saying.
Brady knows that what we're talking about here is is
with is we're talking about the chefter tweet where you're like, dude,
you have to you have to edit. You know, you
can't just take what people's word for it is.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
You know.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
But I think it's very interesting that Brady's checking out
the word of at this time, you know, because my
guess would be that what they mean is like, look,
we want to give JJ a shot. JJ have his
first training camp as a starting quarterback. Aaron's not coming
in to be anybody's backup. Now, if Aaron sits for
(13:01):
a year and sits for the year and it doesn't
work out or JJ gets hurt or something like that,
would they be interested? Like yeah, you know, h it
does leave a lot of ambiguity, and we don't know
the reason why. But I don't think that means that
there are anything other than completely they're They're all in
(13:24):
on JJ McCarthy. They're all in on JJ McCarthy. Would
they like to have a quality backup?
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Yeah? Do they have one? Sure, they're gonna have one.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
But Aaron Rodgers doesn't work if you want to give
JJ McCarthy a shot. And I think that's that's how
I read into it. That's what the Fox is.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
Say.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
All right, that's it for the In the Bonus podcast,
I'm Doug Gottlieb.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
We'll check you tomorrow. This is in the Bonus
