Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug gottli Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
What Up Dog and the Bonus Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio
app Welcome in. I found this to be interesting right where.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yeah, I'm watching the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Calves are
obviously struggling in their playoff series against the Indiana Pacers,
and they have injuries.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Now, I have some friends in the Cleveland organization and
they said something which is really interesting. They're like, hey,
we just had this dream season where we were killing it,
and now so many guys are injured. And again it's adversity,
and when the adversity strikes, it's been really hard for
them to deal with. But I think to the fan,

(01:10):
and I'm not talking the hardcore NBA fan that's like, look, dude,
they got injuries, they're not the same. But to the
NBA fan that watches and goes like, wait, the Calves
had a crazy record in the regular season. Frankly, the
Celtics had a crazy record in the regular season, and
even the thunder At a crazy record in the regular season,
and they're not exactly dominant. And you know, two of

(01:31):
those teams are down two games to one right now
being the Celtics to the Knicks and the Calves to
the Pacers, right, and they don't look I guess the
Celtics did look dominant in Game three and frankly up
to twenty in Game one, Game two. We all think,
I believe they're going to win the series. But the
point is that the Cleveland Caviliers get the latest example

(01:55):
in why it's so hard to get us to buy
into the regular season in the NBA to take care.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
And I think that.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
What's the expression, Jay stud The road to hell is
paved with good intentions, right. I don't think there's any
doubt of that, No doubt the road to hell is
paved with good intentions. Absolutely. But it's because Adam Silver's
tried everything right. He's like, hey, let's create this tournament

(02:31):
that'll get people excited. Right, Let's try and find teams
for tanking, let's make them more. But at the end
of the day, I know it's injuries. I get it,
and I know that the two collapses from the Celtics
are these rare bouts where they can't make a shot.
But you keep trying to sell me the importance of

(02:54):
the regular season and home court doesn't mean anything, and
he's in record means very little, and all the talking
and all the adjusting. I am not your hardcore watch
every game of any NBA team fan.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
I'm not.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
I'm like most of us, where I like the NBA
when it's on, I watch it when it's not. You know,
I look through the standings, I see oh Man, Cleveland,
oh Man, Boston, oh Man, Oklahoma City, and then I
don't take it seriously. It just becomes numbers because of
playoffs series like we've seen. Even when I know there's injuries,

(03:34):
I get it. It's really hard to convince your brain
that what you're seeing doesn't make you're seeing is something different.
But it's even harder to convince your brain that the
regular season matters when the Calves are non competitive against
the Pacers the other day non competitive. So I'm not

(03:57):
taking shots at the Calves. I get it. They've run
into a wall of injuries and newfound adversity. What I'm
trying to tell you is how I think most fans
of the NBA. And I'm not an NBA hater. Oh
look at the radio. It's just really hard for me
to say I'm gonna pay attention and care about an
NBA regular season game win once again. And I'm not

(04:19):
using outlier teams here or they are like the Seattle
Mariners when they went over one hundred games like that
happened once. I'm using real time data of multiple teams
that continue to struggle despite their regular seats success and
at home something. We're told you got to work for
home court advantage and it doesn't pay off.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Let's get to what the fuck said and now everything
this time in the Bonus podcast. Play for your previous
portion of a Fox Sports Radio Fox Sports One show.
Here's Brady Quinn, part of Two Pros and a Cup
of Joe, talking about Derek Carr's retirement and what the
Saints do moving forward.

Speaker 4 (05:03):
He's thirty four years old. Do you guys think he's done?

Speaker 5 (05:07):
No, I think he was done with New Orleans. That's
what I think.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
It sounds kind of fair all things considered, and I.

Speaker 6 (05:18):
Think they probably when you're looking at the team, the roster,
the transition they're gonna have to make here next year
or two. I don't I don't want to say it's
gonna be a rebuild, but it feels like this might
be a great time to reset and to rebuild. They
could put themselves in position to have the number one
overall pick next year. It could be arch Manning falling

(05:38):
in his footsteps, Archie, which would be quite possibly one
of the coolest, greatest stories ever. Like the fact that
a guy could get drafted number one overall to the
same team his grandfather played for be pretty sick.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
But again, I don't want to get ahead of ourselves.

Speaker 6 (05:57):
Just having the number one overall pick, they could be
in control of next year's draft, which would be huge.

Speaker 2 (06:06):
Yeah, I mean, obviously it's the Arch Banning Sweet Stakes.
And unlike the NBA, you can you can tank. And
some people thought even by sticking with Derek Carr, you
were tanking to begin with.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
You know, like.

Speaker 2 (06:23):
I just here there's one where this is one. Let's
just start with Derek Carr. I've never thought he's a
great quarterback.

Speaker 3 (06:30):
I thought.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Las Vegas probably exposed him. Obviously this year they got
up to a hot start and then and then there
were struggles.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
I just look at this thing and I was like,
I'm not gonna hate on Derek Carr and say he's stunk.
That's not accurate. I don't think he was great by
any means. I think he was good, and he made
a crap ton of money and seemed to handle himself
pretty well. I think that's part of why he It's

(07:00):
somewhat of a pass for most of the media. I
won't give him a pass. I just thought he was okay.
There was nothing particularly special about him. The only thing
weird was his accents. You know, he got to this
kind of weird, almost grudiness accent at some point in
his life. And I don't know if he gets out
of that and comes back around. But good enough, dude,

(07:22):
no real huge flaws as a human being. Thought he
was just an okay quarterback and he made like two
hundred million dollars, So like, let's not make this out.
It's like some tragedy that people are critical of his
play post mortem, and by postmortem, I mean mortem of
his career. Here's Eddie House talking about Lebron's comments from
his podcast last week.

Speaker 7 (07:42):
What I don't like is there, he said he doesn't.
He's not losing any sleep over it.

Speaker 5 (07:47):
That's not goat talk.

Speaker 7 (07:48):
That's why Michael Jordan is the goat, because Michael Jordan
would never go on there and say I don't lose
sleep over losing in the first round with another superstar
on my team.

Speaker 5 (07:58):
He would never say that.

Speaker 7 (07:59):
So that's to me, that's the thing that kind of,
you know, rubs me the wrong way. He done the
blame game before. He already did that. So I'm not
tripping off that. I'm tripping off the fact if you
want to consider yourself the goat and call yourself the
goat and everybody else, all these youngsters out here saying
that he's the goat, this is why he's not the goat.
It's for that particular reason right there. He doesn't lose

(08:20):
any sleep right over losing, you go to because it's
not my fault.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
I totally agree with with Eddie. Completely agree with Eddie.
Just the idea, just the idea that not that you're
okay with losing, but I'm not going to lose any
sleepovert And I get you've accomplished a lot in your career.
I get that you've won four championships. I get you

(08:52):
won multiple gold medals. I get it. I get it
completely because you're like, this is not the end of
the world. The difference is the level of psychotic competitiveness
that we expect from the best of the best is
just not there.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
It just isn't.

Speaker 2 (09:12):
And I told you this before, okay, and I'm not
you can I've seen this online where people go like, oh,
how dare you use something Kobe quoting Kobe you didn't
know him. I told Jay stew this the moment it happened.
I had drinks one night with Kobe, and his thing
was like Lebron's bigger, stronger, faster than he Jordan ever

(09:33):
hoped to be. He's like but Kobe told me he's
not built like us. He's not built like me and Mike,
because those guys are psychotic competitors to the point where
like when they have not succeeded, they want to just

(09:54):
kill everybody. Now, that doesn't necessarily make you the greatest
of all time in not cras Fell time, but I
do think that the respect of others, especially in your field,
if you feel that way, like if if it doesn't
burn you every night, if you can't sleep like that's

(10:14):
how it's supposed to be. Then why are you playing
if you don't care that much. Here's Colin Cowhert talking
about Jason Tatum.

Speaker 8 (10:22):
Now, I'm watching Tatum with the Celtics. He's just another
successful banker at Deutsch I mean, they've got like eight
guys that can shoot threes. Peyton Pritchard in Game three
was the dog. He was the guy. And you watch
the Celtics, you could make an argument if you're looking
for a nickname for Tatum, it's the beneficiary, Beneficiary of

(10:44):
Brad Stevens, of Danny Ainge, of a roster that has
easily the most complete in the league that includes Okay,
so you see what Cleveland's have in all sorts of trouble.
Boston's trouble is sometimes they can't hit their threes. That's
like their only issue. Twitchy defenders sighs. For god's sakes,
they have three point guards. The Celtics are two things.

(11:07):
One excellent front office, secondly the formula. And I'm watching
I'm watching Tatum and he's such a nice guy, and
he is such collaborative guy that the beneficiary sometimes he
just melts into the fabric he's just another really good player.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
Uh yeah, I do think. I mean, like that's the
essence of five out basketball, which is if you help,
if you put two in the ball, somebody's wide open.
But it's also like, again, if you haven't watched the
Celtics all year and album just gonna be honest, I've
probably watched ten Celtics games, so I haven't watched every game,
but that has been Peyton Pitchrid's roll all year. Like

(11:49):
he's had a huge year and had some huge games,
so it's not that far Afield. And what he's done
is he's leaned into the scoring, which makes up for
some of the defensive stuff while improving some of the
defensive stuff. That's what the Fox said.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
I'd say be sure to catch live editions of The
Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
Let's find out who are What's annoying Jason Stewart.

Speaker 5 (12:21):
And now it's your annoying.

Speaker 9 (12:27):
Hey, Doug, I'm going to do something we don't do
every day in the business. I guess this is what
people refer to as let's go to the mail bag.
This guy reached out to me personally on Instagram and
I appreciate him. Colin Garon, he got mail. Colin Garon
is a listener first and foremost, thank you for listening.
This is what he writes, huge fan.

Speaker 7 (12:49):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (12:50):
Even when I don't agree with your takes, I still
appreciate your perspectives and presentation style. Listen to in the
Bonus every day if you haven't already, I'd say, just
watching last week tonight piece on transgender kids in sports,
I was pretty I was pretty hardline before watching, and
it slightly softened my opinion. Keep up the great work.

(13:11):
Thanks for bringing some entertainment to my day every day. Okay, again,
thanks for listening, Colin. And the crazy thing about this
is that Colin is the second person that listened to
our podcast from last week that has reached out to
me about John Oliver's show. And I promise I'm going
to watch it. It's in my queue, I'm going to

(13:31):
access it and I'm going to watch it. I'm going
to right now preview what the take is. Because John
Oliver is extremely left Okay, let me guess left wing
talking point number one. There just aren't enough cases of
transgender women beating up on women athletes. You're just aren't
enough cases. It's very very few. And then the second

(13:55):
one that came to be kind of in the last
couple of weeks. Kate Fagan last week had said this
that this is about inclusion. This is about being a
part of a team. It's an important part of growing up.
I have a feeling he's going to go to that
one too. And to your point that you made on Friday,
does this mean that they're getting sex changes as kids,

(14:17):
which I know is something that again very rarely the case,
but I guess it does happen very That's very disturbing.
So I don't know if I'm ever going to change
my view on this, especially if you're telling me that
it's got to be kids that are being included. And
iowas Sam made a good point when you heard Kate
Fagan last week, because she's like, all all kids or

(14:42):
all people should be able to play sports. And we're
not saying you can't play sports. Just play with your
your natural gender growing up, right, there's nothing wrong with.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
That, not even playing with your natural gender, just like
there's there's a lot to it. And because what I
got kind of hung up on or I hung up on,
but I got stuck on the we're talking about kids.
We talked about under the age of eighteen, then it's

(15:12):
one thing. Over the age of eighteen is a different thing.
That's how I perceive it, and I perceive all of
it as what are we actually doing here? You know why?
You do have a right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness,
but it cannot conflict with somebody else's And oh yeah,

(15:34):
by the way, nowhere in that is your right to
play sports.

Speaker 1 (15:37):
Just not.

Speaker 2 (15:39):
Of course, I think sports is valuable. Of course, I
think it's unbelievably important, unbelievably important that kids get a
chance to be who they really are. But I disagree
with kids changing their sexes before they're eighteen. And I've
always disagreed with people who are bored men. You know,

(16:03):
once you get post puberty. Yeah, I don't think you
get to I don't think you get to compete against women.

Speaker 9 (16:12):
That's where I come out, and Colin again, thanks for
the message. You're the second person that's encouraged me to
watch it, and I will watch it. I just I
don't know if I'm coming off the point. So Shaud's
Sander sad Door Sanders taint is my is what I
think is annoying here. I allowed my impression of Shaduur
Sanders to taint my impression of Travis Hunter. Ever since

(16:38):
the kid has been drafted, we keep seeing these amazing
comments from the guy, how he's just a really nice dude.
I remember that thing about him and his girlfriend that
was kind of muddy and foggy, But I just, for
whatever reason, I just thought this was Shaduur Sanders two
point zero but much more talented. Well over the weekend,

(16:59):
Sandy Dawkins Comb some random lady UH was on a
plane and she wrote this on social media. I just
had the most wonderful flight from Denver. I met the
nicest young man who sat next to me. He offered
to help me with my bag in the overnight canpart
overhead compartment and helped me with my tray. He was
always polite, saying yes, ma'am, no man, ma'am. Anyone would

(17:23):
be proud to have him as grandson. He's so polite.
We had a great conversation. He talked about how he'd
go moving to Jacksonville. Just a really sweet testimonial. About
Travis Hunters that we are increasingly learning more about. He
isn't the what do you call when people are are

(17:44):
fascinated with buying actual things?

Speaker 5 (17:47):
What do you call that?

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Your your window shopping?

Speaker 9 (17:51):
No, it's just like when you when you when you're
fixated on nice things that you have to buy, materialism,
material He's not the materialistic a hole that Shaduur Sanders is.
I think he said that he's going to use a
lot of his money to buy a fishing boat or whatever. Anyways,
I apologize. I thought that Travis Hunter was Shador Sanders

(18:13):
two point zero, and I think he's a much different person.
And I think it's been unfair that we that those
two have been like attached at the hip over the
last couple of years.

Speaker 2 (18:23):
I agree with you, I do. I Travis Hunter seems
just happy with life. Shadoor Sanders seems like he's got
a plan for everything in life, and he he comes
across as arrogant and whereas Travis Hunter does not. So

(18:43):
I agree that we did make that misassessment.

Speaker 9 (18:46):
Who else this was something that happened yesterday. I want
to give full context here. Almost my entire family, both
my parents are from the Syracuse, New York region, both
upstate New York people. I grew up with grandparents and
family members sending me Syracuse memorabilia. Syracuse was my team

(19:07):
growing up. This is the one guy that delivered Syracuse
or one national title. I'll always have a place on
my heart for Carmelo Anthony. But he did a commencement
speech this weekend, Doug. I don't know if you saw
it or it went like this.

Speaker 10 (19:20):
Wow wow wow wow wow wow. Good morning sarahcuse. Wow,
what a moment, what a full circle moment. I would say,
standing here in this dome, this place, while I once
played sweat drimmed one and grew is very surreal for myself.
This building was my launch spad for my life. And

(19:43):
I say that in a very humbling way. But this
building was a launchpan to my life.

Speaker 5 (19:49):
Now.

Speaker 9 (19:50):
You have a very unique perspective on this on the topic, Doug. Yeah,
if you spend one semester or I guess he had
to play two quarters or too semesters. He never went
back to get his degree. He has no attachment to
Syracuse other than giving them a bunch of money for
the athletic facility and the side gym and all that stuff. Yeah,

(20:11):
if you have if you have no other kind of
I guess equity in the university other than just playing
in the Carrier Dome. Yeah, can you take ownership over
Syracuse being a part of your past.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
I do think you can. And I thought he worded
it right. This is the launch pad for his career.
Remember he gave money for their practice facility. His son
is going there. He's always been associate there. They won
a national CHAMPIONIP within there. I'm with you. You know
a lot of guys now. I mean, I don't know
what alumni games are going to look like, if they're
going to have a moving forward. But I do think

(20:47):
for Carmelo, they're so synonymous with each other, Syracuse and
Mellow because they won the championship all allowed. I know
you're annoyed by it.

Speaker 3 (20:55):
I hear you. I am too.

Speaker 2 (20:57):
I just don't know if he's the guy because he did,
he did give money back. He he doesn't just go
back every once in a while. I don't know. I
think he's a little different.

Speaker 9 (21:07):
I might give him a pass, but I will say this,
he mentioned Carrier Dome is the place that that is
very near and dear to his heart, he didn't mention
any of the other like you know, educational buildings, you know,
the none of none of the buildings that you have
to walk into.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
At least things at least he ain't a liar.

Speaker 9 (21:24):
At least he a liar, So Carmelo Anthony, uh, the
Travis Hunter taint and just to follow up on the uh,
the sex change and kids.

Speaker 2 (21:36):
I again, I think I'm annoyed at how much this
is discussed, the sex change with kids on a multitude
of levels, Like one, we are talking about a very
small number of people, right, and we're doing the thing
that politicians want us to do, which is hyper focus

(21:59):
on something that is it's not a huge This is
like we shouldn't. We're not deciding policy for our country
based upon I'm sorry, I understand all citizens are you know,
have the right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. I
just annoyed. Just like again, here's my annoyance, Chase do

(22:20):
and you tell me if you agree or disagree. It's
that this is like the Jordan Lebron debate. Like I've
decided how I feel. Nothing's going to change how I feel.
Stop trying to persuade me on how I should feel
with more interesting thoughts about it, like I have had

(22:40):
time to process. This is not a new topic. So hey,
what if you looked at it a different way? Like now,
I've looked at a bunch of different ways. So that's
where I'm annoyed at it. Is that a fair way
for you? Or is it people trying to constantly convince you?
What is it that annoys you?

Speaker 9 (23:02):
No, I think that there's a there's a compelling point
on the other side. I think AOC hit all the
sentimental notes as well when she talked on the floor
months ago saying how do you enforce this? Who is
dropping the trousers of kids and checking their under arrangements?

(23:24):
I don't know. I don't have it. There's no easy
answers on this. There's no easy answers on the enforcement.
There's no easy answers on the very nuanced part of this.
But I will say this, no biological man should ever
play sports against a biological women, especially if scholarships, money,
livelihoods are on the line. That's all I know. I

(23:46):
don't know what the fix is.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
I'm gonna you know what, I'm gonna agree with you
again in a my tone would be a little different,
but it doesn't matter the take on it would be.
And again you're allowed to think otherwise. But I'm kind
of all good discussing it.

Speaker 5 (24:03):
Good, Like, why are we doing this? Because we can?

Speaker 9 (24:15):
I guess, uh Mitchell Robinson, he's a New York knickerbocker,
and I guess he missed free throws or missed some
shots and he got a bunch of hate on social
media and he calls his pickup truck an interesting nickname.

Speaker 11 (24:30):
I know y'all commenting and doing all the stupid stuff
thinking that I really care.

Speaker 5 (24:36):
I really don't.

Speaker 11 (24:37):
Yeah, I know what I care about this motherfucker playing
basketball and my daughter all other stuff I really don't
care for. But I think that's some more thing I
want to say to someone else too after this video. So,
oh shit, it's fucking nasty in there though. That's what

(24:57):
they share Dawn clean up. I should know me by now.
I's been here seven years, y'all know how this shit go.

Speaker 3 (25:10):
Man.

Speaker 11 (25:12):
Anyway, Happy mother Day. I'll enjoy y'allself.

Speaker 3 (25:17):
Mhm h.

Speaker 2 (25:20):
So the truck is called this motherfucker right here? Okay,
why can we play for you? Because we can. I
love that sound bite. Thanks so much for listening to
the end the Modus podcast. You got the radio show
