Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug Gottling.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
What Up?

Speaker 3 (00:11):
Doug Gottlieb Show in the Bonus Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio.
App Welcome, Welcome, Welcome in. You know, the longer you live,
the more you gain experiences. Not all experiences are positive, right,
And last night we lost a game to Saint Thomas,
a team who I think the world of just because
they drive those kids and they play the right way,

(00:33):
and they they get them to buy into their system.
And you know, those coaches have been there forever and
they figure it out. But what happened during the game
I've seen on TV, so I was, I was in
studio in two thousand and thirteen right when the Louisville

(00:56):
kid broke his broke his ankle, and then you know later,
you know, and and everybody was was just grave struck
in and he had players throwing up on the bench.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
And I literally almost threw up. Yeah, it was it was.
It was awful. It was awful.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
And then two weeks ago we saw Cam Skataboo do
the same thing, right, exact same thing is what I
saw last night, which is dislocated ankle, and I think
Cam also had a break in that leg, and uh
it it was an open wounded, open fracture. So I
have a have A player's name is Don Trell Hewett,

(01:36):
and Don Treill's from Northern California.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
He played at Odessa. He played at.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
Ut Tyler, which is the Division two program last year,
and he really talented and we've been bringing him off
the bench. I think it started on one game, maybe
an exhibition game whatever, but he is a really explosive
point guard and we were just he's just kind of
starting to figure it out. So he thirteen in our
game on Monday, and so last night he came in

(02:03):
off the bench and he's just a dynamic downhill driver.
And early on in the first half, we're down I
think twelve points at the time, and he gets back
on defense and then all of a sudden, he goes down.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
And I was upset.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Because there was a time out right afterwards when he
went down because of injury. But I was upset because
I thought he got out of the way of a charge.
He was trying to take a charge, and then I
looked down at his ankle and his foot was turned
in the wrong direction. And then two of my players
looked like they were about to cry and throw up

(02:39):
at the same time. And so I didn't see it
at first. I just saw the foot being turned in
the wrong direction. I gathered my team, I talked to them,
and then I went over to talk to Dontrelle and
that's when I saw it, And yeah, it was. It
was as bad as I've ever seen. I just I
can't I you know, I just wasn't ready to see

(03:02):
somebody's entire ankle bone right there in the broad daylight.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
It felt like.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
The medical team there did a great job. They took
him to the hospital.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
This morning.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
He had surgery. I forget what it's called. When they
got the dislocation. Took two doctors to pop that thing
back in, And honestly, like not having a break in
the leg and having just a minor fracture and a
small little bone in the ankle is a massive win. Now,
we're just gonna pray that they got the antibiotics they

(03:37):
flushed it out with saline, and that there's no infection,
because that's the biggest concern. But to deal with players
emotions at the time, don Trell's emotions at the time
he's a sixth year senior and he was crying because
he doesn't think he'll get to play college basket anymore.

(03:57):
And you're like, he's in shock. You can't read with
them and just go, hey, you're gonna get your year back.
You could come back and play next year. Now again,
his ankle has to heal. There's a lot of steps,
but you're just trying to make him comfortable. He's in
shock the whole thing. So my point of it is,
I'm that guy who looks at these injuries time and

(04:18):
again and who talks about them often. I don't know
if I'll share them on social media ever. Again, I
have a picture of this, of this ankle on my phone.
I looked at it a couple of times. It's really
hard to look at but I will tell you experience
it in person. And it seems to happen a little
bit more now than it happened previously. I don't remember

(04:40):
these things happening as often. You have a completely different
respect for what it does to teams, what it does
to kids. You know, even the players that weren't playing,
they it was right in front of our bench, they
saw it as well, and everybody was shook up, and
then for the kid himself and it's whoa, it's rough.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
This is me my way of saying, like.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Well, I may I may have lacked the empathy at
times in the past.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
I do not now, I do not know.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Doug Gottlieb
Show weekday. He's at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
It's a Doug Gottlieb Show. You're on Fox Sports Radio.
Let's welcome in, Kelly Ford. K four Ratings Index, of course,
is a great way to get yourself updated on what
his computer model things of matchups of teams, of rankings,
and can let me just start with the college fball
playoff rankings. How does your model compare to what the
committee came out with earlier this week?

Speaker 4 (05:42):
Yeah, Doug, I actually think the committee has done a
really nice job so far this season, you know, relatives
the past years. I don't know, maybe it's the increased
emphasis they're placing on the scheduled difficulty metrics or their
strength of record now, but the committee's behavior is now
more in line with my most deserving rankings, and it's

(06:03):
ever been before. Still not perfect in terms of you
know how I'd like to see it stack up. My
biggest gripes this week, Doug, is I think the committee
is overvaluing Notre Dame as they were last week. They
continue to overvalue the Irishes record, and I think they
are punishing too severely BYU. I would have BYU in

(06:23):
the twelve team field right now, I would have Notre
Dame out, but the top four seeds they have the
buys right, and they have eleven out of twelve in
terms of inclusion correct compared to my most deserving rankings.
So I'm going to give them credit. It's much better
than it's been in years past.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
Okay, so let's get to this weekend's games. You have
the watchability index as well, like the watchability rankings. What
is the most watchable game of the ones on the slate?

Speaker 4 (06:51):
Yeah, it probably comes to no surprise. This week my
number one watchability score a scale of zero to ten.
We have a nine point eight on Techs at Georgia.
That's the prime time seven thirty Eastern ABC game. Two
top ten CFP ranked teams. This is the game that
my my model has fit out as the most watchable
for this week, and of course it has a ton

(07:13):
of implications both in the SEC race as well as
a college football playoff race. Can Texas survive another loss
and still be in that conversation right now? The rankings
will suggest maybe not, And so there's a lot on
the line for the Longhorns and Georgia still trying to
figure out how they can make it to Atlanta.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Okay, let me get some let me get to some
of the other ones. Uh, Okay, I know what. Let
me just ask you.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
Second most watchable game is?

Speaker 4 (07:38):
What the number two game and watchability score this week,
Doug is a little surprising. Most people probably think it's
Oklahoma at Alabama. That one comes out number three. And
here's the reason why. The projected spread in that game
is a little bit greater than my number two watchability score.
And that's a lot of quality teams in the three

(07:59):
point thirty on BTN. Iowa at usc that game for
me comes out number two ability. The Trojans of course
still position to take a run Indianapolis, but certainly for
an at large bit, Iowa's folks probably hanging on by
a thread. They need a ton of chaos to make
it back into the CFT picture, but that's the one

(08:19):
that comes out number two. Of course, I'm excited about
the ABC game in the afternoon window when the Sooners
are going to Tee Town, Alabama remembers what happened last
year at Norman, and I'm pretty sure they're not going
to let the Sooners forget it.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
Okay, what about Notre Dame in pitt It kind of
seems like an under the radar game because, as you said,
Notre Dame would be out of your bracket, they're in
the current bracket, and Pittsburgh is just kind of looming
out there as one of those ACC teams that I
don't really know what to deal with. Pitt at home
supposed to be Rainy is a twelve and a half

(08:52):
point dog with the total at fifty four and a half.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
What's the model show?

Speaker 4 (08:55):
This is the number four game in terms of watchability.
So I'm glad you meant should that I talk to
the may had a committee, But don't misunderstand to the
very be talented team, my model, the predicted model, has
the number four in the entire country. This is a
top five offense, it's a top fifteen defense. I have
them with a seventy eight percent win expectancy in this game,

(09:18):
and if Notre Dame gets past the Panthers here this weekend,
in Pit, it's smooth sailing at least from a probability
standpoint to finish. Then ten and two Syracuse at Stanford.
Both of those are ninety eight percent win expectancies for
the Fighting Irish, So they know this is the last
big test. If they can get through it, based on
where the Committee has them right now, they're going to

(09:38):
be feeling very good about making a return trip to
the College Ball Playoff. As for pitt Man, the ACC
standings are a mess. There are five teams with one
conference loss. Pitt is one of them, and so there's
definitely still a pass to Charlotte. And if there's a
pass to Charlotte, that means there's a pass into the
College football Playoff. And coming into number twenty two this
week in the Committee's rankings, certainly it's gonna feel good

(10:01):
about their chances. The road is very tough, though there's
just a four percent chance that pitt wins out based
on my model right now. I talked about this game
against Notre Dame. It is worth noting Pit's coming off
of by some We do have some rest coming into
this game, but only it's twenty two percent chance to
win this one. At Georgia Tech next week is a
fifty to fifty game for me. And then at home

(10:21):
in week fourteen to close the regular season, Miami comes
to town. The Hurricanes already have two losses in conference play,
but they are still a very talented team. And right
now my model gets pitch just about a one to
three chance to win that one. So it's an uphill battle.
But Panther fans have to be feeling good after you
start the season two and two to still be in
the mix for either an ACC spot, a championship game spot,

(10:42):
or a CFP spop potentially, they have to be feeling
good that they're still in that. Here in mid November,
it's the.

Speaker 3 (10:48):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
Kelly Ford is our guest. K Ford Ratings Index. Let
me ask you about Oregon. Okay, this is one.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
Of those classic I guess trappie games. Minnesota comes to town.
Remember Oregon escaped Iowa, huge late win. They got usc
next week, then to Washington. What's the model say about
this game? With the Ducks tonight being twenty five and
a half point favorites coming off just a hard fought
win over the Hawkeyes.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Yeah, you don't expect this to be a trap game.
I mean, it's Friday nights. You always keep your eyes
on those. But this one is at home for Oregon.
You mentioned, you know, they got out of Iowa last
week with a win with the last second field goal,
USC next week and then they closed at Washington, So
I know the Oregon resume has come kind of under
the microscope recently, as it should, and my model, my

(11:41):
most deserving ranking, suggests that Oregon is over ranked by
just one spot in the College Ball Playoff ranking, So
I actually have a little bit less respect for the
resume than even the committee. They have an opportunity to
do the Ducks down the stretch here after Minnesota with
UFC and Washington to really build on that, and they're
still a pass to get to indian Alis and compete
in the Big Ten Championship game. So Oregon's incredibly talented.

(12:04):
They're number three in my predicted model ten, So I
like the Ducks in this one. I have percent chance
that they went out governan one.

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Stug Gottlieb Show Fox Sports Tritty. You did mention Oklahoma
and Alabama briefly said it wasn't the second most watchable game.
What does the predictive model say about that?

Speaker 4 (12:21):
Yeah, so again, all eyes are going to be on
this one in that afternoon window. I think it's the
reason it's the ABC game. I have a seventy seven
percent win expectancy four Alabama in this one. Alabama's incredibly talented.
They started the year and we know the Florida state,
what the narrative was. The model never gave up on
the Crimson Tide. I've had Alabama in the top five

(12:43):
or six all year long. That's where they remained. This
defense is top ten, the offense is top twenty. They
remember last year's game in Norman. I have to believe
that Caitlin de Boor and those players that are back
this year are going to keep that in the back
of their mind. This team went nine and three a
year ago and missed out on the playoff because they
had won too many losses, whether that was the Oklahoma loss,
the Mannament lost, whatever loss it was. They know we

(13:05):
had won too many losses. I think they're going to
take out that frustration on the Sooners in Tee Town
this weekend. So I like Alabama to win this game.
I like them to win it actually pretty comfortably. Now.
Oklahoma's defense is really really good. I mean they're number
five in the country on that side of the ball.
The offense is merely top forty. That would be good
except you're talking about playing an Alabama team on the road.

(13:27):
So I do like Alabama here to get it done
and to continue this hot streak that they are on.
They close the year with FCS Eastern Illinois and then
a road trip in the Iron Bowl to Auburn. You
never know how that game is going to go. Throw
the records out with that one. But Alabama is in
my model a favorite to make it to Atlanta, and
if they do, I would have them as a favorite
over Texas A and M. They're most likely opponent in that.

Speaker 3 (13:49):
Game, all right, s Doug Gottlieb show here on Fox
Sports Trader. That's Kelly Ford his raings k Ford Ratings Index.
Go check it out on social media. Check out his website.

Speaker 2 (13:58):
It is there.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
It gives you a great sense of what his computer
model believes the outcome, the watchability, likability, if you will,
of these games are and and for the first time,
you know, since we started this thing seems to match
up with what the Committee things on a more regular basis.
A couple of tweaks here or there. Kelly, you're the
best man. Thanks so much for your time.

Speaker 4 (14:18):
Thanks appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (14:19):
Always be sure to catch live editions of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
Let's find out who are what is annoying? Jason Stewart.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
And now it's your annoying.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
He what's annoying?

Speaker 5 (14:43):
Today? We're gonna have to explain to our grandchildren this, Hey, granddad,
A catcher hit sixty home runs and was not voted
the league MVP. His team was in first place, he
won the Gold Glove. He handled pitching for an entire season,
hit sixty home runs. No hitter has ever done that,

(15:05):
No switch hitter has ever done that, and he wasn't
the MVP. I don't know how I'm going to explain
that away. That's what's frustrating about this topic is that
I guess it really kind of defines annoying to me.
He got a ton of votes. He just didn't get
enough votes. But Kyle Rawley, I just don't see him
ever duplicating this particular season. I think you'll probably hit

(15:27):
like forty five next year or something, but this will
be like his one big year and I would have
loved to see him get rewarded with an MVP award.

Speaker 3 (15:37):
Yeah, and again I think that there's the other aspects
to it that you point out. It's one of those
we can't judge MVP for Lebron based upon his age, right,
but we can judge MVP for Kyle Rawley based upon
his position and the fact that he maintained his confidence
through throughout his confidence.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
It's not just that he was a.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
Catcher and that he continued to compete and hit all
these runs. It's also he managed a pitching staff that
ended up getting to the playoffs. I think that's that's
maybe a little part of it that is has has
not stated enough, right. It's not just that he was catcher.
It's that while he's catcher, they're winning. I think that's
part of the factor. I agree with you.

Speaker 5 (16:19):
The Chris Finch has made some ways with this, and
there's a I got a couple of thoughts afterwards. But anyways,
he was, uh, I don't know, he sat down for
some kind of a I don't know, he was doing
some common interview, and he made this jab at JJ Reddick.
Three quarter of these.

Speaker 6 (16:35):
People are going to go home and do a podcast tonight,
you know. I mean, it'll qualify to coach the Lakers,
you know, So.

Speaker 5 (16:45):
A couple of things. Let's let's let's do let's go
two paths on this one. Okay, one of them you
can very much rewait too.

Speaker 2 (16:52):
Sure.

Speaker 5 (16:52):
I think if you're going to go from something to
a field where there are hundreds, if not thousands of
people paying their dues and working their way up the ladder,
if you jump the line and come from any other industry, broadcasting, podcasting, whatever,
you're going to get a certain percentage of resentment, like

(17:14):
automatic resentment. And I think Chris Finch in this little
jab isn't really necessarily talking about himself, who I think
is a career coach, but I think for all the
assistance that he probably thinks was better qualified than somebody
who just didn't have any experience. So there's always that,
And then there's the concept of like a podcast being

(17:37):
the butt of a joke. You know, ninety nine percent
of podcast don't make any money, but everyone has a podcast.
It's almost like your Twitter account in twenty ten. You
just had to kind of add it to put onto
your business card. When they had business cards. You added

(17:57):
it to put in a signature of your core for
an email. Podcasting is just a newer form of that.
You if you want a brand at all, or if
you just want to have some kind of pathway for
an opinion or platform, you have a podcast. I don't
think it's it's no longer the subject of a joke,

(18:19):
and I guess unless you're born before like nineteen eighty,
but it's very I think it makes you kind of
look old if you're kind of poking fun of podcasters.

Speaker 2 (18:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
Yeah, it's a lot like you know, I mean, I
think there's lots of fields that are like that where
you start to clown it. And look, I actually understand
Chris Bench. You know, he coached in every little minor league,
all these different countries whatever, moved all around the world,
and there's there's no sense in really kind of fighting back,

(18:52):
right remember that JJ Reddick. Yeah, he didn't coach all
those places he played for fifteen years in the league.
That's it's not the same as coaching, but it's a
different way of having perspective. But again that that you
can't fight. But yeah, making fun of the podcast is
it's interesting. It's like you're making fun of a podcast
that everybody actually listens to.

Speaker 2 (19:09):
It's one thing.

Speaker 3 (19:10):
If you have a podcast that nobody knows about, that's
the Actually that's actually a better one. Did you know
he has a podcast? No you didn't, well then obviously,
but this is a podcast that people pay attention to.
So yeah, I think it's kind of a backfire ala
of a slam.

Speaker 5 (19:24):
So a reporter, I don't know the name. I didn't
do enough research to know the name, but I resent
this question. Toms is my favorite head basketball coach. I
guess present company excluded, but I love the fact that
he's still doing it and that he's old school, and
then he'll scream down as players and that's I know,

(19:45):
no longer kosher. So he gets this question from a
reporter very demanding of them.

Speaker 7 (19:51):
Do you feel that this is a group that can
handle that?

Speaker 6 (19:54):
Better?

Speaker 7 (19:54):
To do you want me to do? Hugg and kiss him?
I want me to guys, you're doing all right now
not my style. So when you say I'm being demanding
of them, what the hell you're supposed to be doing?
We got guys that want to play at the next level.
We got guys that want to win championships. We want
want guys that want to get better every day. Wanting
to and doing it are two different things.

Speaker 5 (20:14):
Now, I think we've reached a point in the lexicon
where where the word demanding is used as a pejoratives.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
Like it's almost it's a great point.

Speaker 5 (20:24):
It's synonymous with abusive. You know, you're very abusive.

Speaker 3 (20:27):
I mean, listen, I I have I'm trying to manage
my own frustration and emotions with my group, So I
I understand. I you know, I have people who are
in our administration, like you know, do they react poorly
to when you jump on them? But it's like, okay,
what am I? What am I supposed to do? There
there are times to be positive, there are times to
be supportive. You have to read each guy. But Izzo

(20:50):
because he's izz Oh, he's a da to type figure.

Speaker 2 (20:53):
He can do it.

Speaker 3 (20:53):
So yeah, it's really interesting that you you point out
that we're using demanding as a pejorative when it absolute should.

Speaker 5 (20:59):
Not be that question, the Chris Finch conversation about podcast
and then cal Rawley not getting the MVP.

Speaker 3 (21:07):
I'm gonna go the question, the question do you think
they can handle Do you think they can handle it,
you know, handled being demanding?

Speaker 2 (21:17):
Yeah they can't. It'll take them a minute, but yeah
they can't. And it's.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
Why are we doing this.

Speaker 5 (21:30):
Because we can. Earlier in the week, we played a
little a key to lib in this segment and Max,
I guess he picked a fight with Max Crosby and
Max Crosby this was his retort to a key to
leave I guess criticizing. I'm not even sure what it is.
Some kind of technical thing with it with the defense.

Speaker 8 (21:52):
Get mad at somebody that's uneducated in a situation the
Jack Show, tomorro Bro, I don't even have to defend myself.
Go look up the numbers, Go look up the tape.
Go watch me play a football game. Go watch the
game I played on Thursday. The only thing that was
disappointing about the whole fucking thing is the fact that

(22:13):
Bro and he might not even remember this. The first
time I ever worked out with an NFL player was
Big snacks Harrison. Everyone knows snacks Harrison one of the
best nose tackles. He was the run stopping king at
that time in the league. I went with Snacks Harrison
and BT to a key to leaves d One gym.
He owned the gym in Texas. But I remember being

(22:34):
there with his whole family and they're like, bro, you're
the white boy from Eastern You're cold. And I was like,
oh my god, they actually know who I am. I
fuk with a keep to leave like he's a dog,
and so like looking forward at this situation and having
him come come and say that shit, like he could
have an opinion about whatever. He don't know what the
fuck he's talking about. We could see he could sit
in the room with me right now and we can
watch the fucking film together. If he thinks I can

(22:54):
un on South the runt.

Speaker 2 (22:57):
That's so good, it's so great.

Speaker 4 (22:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (22:59):
I had one of these earlier this week with Chuck Hayes, Right,
Chuck Hayes played in the NBA, played at Kentucky, and
he kind of clowned one of my players, Ramel Bethea,
who's struggling and like, look, he's just started playing basketball,
believe or not at twenty nine years old, you know.
So he takes to Instagram and makes fun of him
and my it's the same thing. It's like, hey, dude,
like my brother recruit you. I love watching you play.

(23:20):
Why are you being Why are you being a douche
to this kid? Like what is what is the point?

Speaker 2 (23:25):
But I love that. Why can we play for you?
Because we can't.

Speaker 3 (23:27):

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
