Doug Gottlieb Show, Foxsports Radio Coming to you from the
tyrack dot com studios tyrat dot com. What we get there,
unmatched selection, fast, free shipping, free Roodeazer protection, over ten
thousand recommend installars tyrat dot com. It's the way that
tire buying should be uh welcome in. I'm not sure
(00:41):
if you heard this with Robert Shala has been fired
by the New York Cats. Not surprising, but surprising, right,
Jets haven't fired a coach in season. It's five games
in there, one game out of first place in a
division that you know, you would have thought the Dolphins
would have a chance to have some separation.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
We don't know when their quarterback will come back.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
The Bills had gotten off to a fast start, and
then you know, disaster past two weeks past couple of weekends,
and so the Jets, even though they're not playing good football,
still hanging around. And the one part about the Jets
would seem to be, you know, doing well was their defense.
And though they appointed their defensive coordinated their interim head coach,
(01:22):
the fact is that their defense was likely coached by
their head coaches, if forver defense coordinator Goodwin. So what
is it well, I mean, look around the league, many
people had said it's a it's a dysfunctional franchise. Joe
Douglass in his last year as the GM doesn't seem
like he's long for that job. The offense continues to
(01:44):
struggle to get the plays in on time, and just
you know, you have a quarterback who appears to have aged,
you know, not just coming out from achilles injury, but
also the agist is catching up to him and he's
not the same player. And a team who keeps cycling
the through coach is cycling through quarterbacks, appears to be
on the brink of yet another refresh cycle. And it's
(02:10):
interesting to me, Right, there's a lot of different ways
to win football games, but when you take a quarterback
who's played this long, I mean the Tom Brady thing
is the exception and the rule is what's happened so
many other places where aging quarterback do you acquiesce and
install their system.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
There's a reason that their first team let them let
them go.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
You know, Donovan McNabb was traded in division from the
Eagles to the Skins at the time now the Washington
Commanders and never amounted too much. Obviously, we've seen what's
happened with Russell Wilson. Brady was surrounded by such elite talent,
and he's such an elite talent as an organizer that
even during COVID, he was able to get that extra workouts.
(02:56):
And look, they won the Super Bowl. People forget they
were the wild card there. They were the last team
in they played, had to play three road games just
to get into the Super Bowl. So it became a
success only because of the postseason success, which was very
much because of Brady early in the games and then
the defense laid in the games. It's just an interesting
(03:17):
dynamic that here's the guy in Aaron Rodgers who has
widely been considered the best thrower of a football of
all time, maybe not the best quarterback of all time,
but the best thrower of a football of all time.
And yet as is athleticism Waynes with the Achilles tendon injury,
as this is running ability Waynes, not just with the
Achilles injury, but with his age, and everybody catched up
(03:38):
to him. If you watched this weekend when they're playing
in London against another former Jets quarterback, they're like man
and Sam Darlin didn't even play well and he was
still betteran Aaron Rodgers who couldn't complete a throw. I
think this was the Jets not postponing the reality, which
(04:00):
was they had to move on from Sala. I don't
think there's any question that Aaron Rodgers thought he didn't
know what the hell he's doing.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
And there's always been.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
And going to be a rift in ther in with
the team if you have a coach, a coach talking
about a quarterback, and a quarterback openly wildly disagreeing with
the coach in the media, in public. So they ask
his you know, some of his defensive guys, and they
asked Sala about his defensive guys. And it's a completely
(04:29):
different vibe over there. And now he's out of a job.
It's a weird one. Kant say hadn't sid coming. You know,
can't say I didn't sid coming. That's that's the only part.
And really when he look the I understand that. You
(04:49):
say it's not bad leadership skill, I think it's terrible
leadership what he did when he talked about Aaron Rodgers
and the cadence, and then Rogers really cut his legs
out when he's like, maybe we need to hold guys accountable,
because that made all of us think he's not holding
him accountable. And then when they came back to Salah
last Monday and asked him about it, he backtracked on
talking about the cadence, instead talking about the getting the
plays in and off on time, which is a shot
(05:11):
at his offensive coordinator. So even though his quarterback is
a tough one to coexist with, he did basically call
him out. Then when the quarterback pushed back against him.
Now he called out his offensive coordinator, who is definitely
part of the big part of the problem in that
he doesn't get the right place called, and let alone
called him in a timely manner.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
But all of that can of course.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Irk Aaron Rodgers, who has this level of chippiness which
is unforeseen in the current NFL culture. He always thinks
he's slighted. He always thinks he deserves more, and I
believe he is worth more. He is a great, all
time great quarterback. But like, what do you want now?
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Dude?
Speaker 1 (05:53):
You're making fifty million dollars a year. I think you're
pretty good. You're pretty good. The Rogers thing has been
an abject disaster, but it's not the first time.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
It won't be the last.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
And trying to reprogram a VCR or trying to get
the VCR that's been programmed by somebody else somebody else's
house to bring to your house and try to like, Okay,
do I do I get off the Netflix account? Do
I keep the Netflix account? Is this gonna alert them?
Or are they gonna be mad?
Speaker 2 (06:20):
What do I do? I mean?
Speaker 1 (06:23):
Like, look, he's been in this league a long time,
been very successful, knows a lot, thinks he knows everything,
and is really hard to coach.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
Is really hard to coach.
Speaker 3 (06:36):
This is the best of the Doun dot Lead show
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
What About You Gotta Leave show Fox Sports Radio coming
to you from the tyret dot Com studios tyrat dot Com.
But we get there unmatched election fast, free shipping free
road ass protection for ten thousand recommended dollars. Tyrat dot
com Sweet tire buying should be, you know, kind of
interesting on the different philosophies with some of these quarterbacks.
(07:05):
I don't know if you guys saw Drake may is
going to start this week, right, And so you look
at Caleb Williams, who finally played I thought, pretty good
football game this past Sunday, but he had to go
through the tumult of not playing well in people questioning him. Frankly,
Caleb's a pretty confident fella, so he survived, okay, But
we're looking at some of these other young quarterbacks and
will they bounce back from the confidence steeler that is
(07:28):
the National Football League. Then you got, of course, the
Chiefs improving the five and zero, and you know Hunt
and Smith Schuster back with the Chiefs and back being productive.
It just shows knowledge of system, trust of quarterback end
up playing a bigger role than your actual skill set.
(07:49):
You know, That's what people ask all the time, why
when guys get job, why did you fire that guy?
It's not because they are incompetent at their job. It's
because whatever the level of competency one may have cosed
the previous guy to get fired. Then two, like, you
don't know him, you're gonna do things a different ways.
There's a trust component involved. It's just sometimes easier to
(08:10):
bring in people who know you know everything you want
to do. They've worked with you before, they know your quirks,
you know, they know you're an early riser, they know
you're not. Instead of just getting to know somebody and
getting to work with somebody the first time is really hard.
Here's Andy Reid, head coach of the undefeated Chiefs, on
the contributions of Kareem Hunt and Juju Smith Schuster coming
(08:33):
back to the Chiefs.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Jujus is a good football player. I mean he's been
a good football player for a long time. So and
you know he had the one down in the end
zone that got tipped and he felt terrible about that.
Then he comes back with two huge ones and that's
who you know, he's a pro and does a great
job with that thing.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
Here's Pat Mahomes talking about those two.
Speaker 5 (08:55):
I mean, Kream just runs extremely hard. He gets every
yard out there, catches the ball, doesn't ever it takes
in order to go out there and win. And then
Juju I mean, y'all saw him two years ago. I mean,
he fits in well in this offense, and so he
did a great job today. So it was cool to
get those guys going and then to step up. And
it's gonna be like that until we start getting some
of these guys back. It's gonna be everybody who want
(09:17):
to step up make plays.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Here's Pat mahomes Uh talking about Travis Kelsey's lateral.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
Patrick, what was your review on travis Lateral? How that
how that funk folded?
Speaker 5 (09:27):
And I mean I'm shaking my head because I told
him before the playoffs, I'm gonna thugh it to you
so he can fill the range, and he's shot, he's
underhand shoveled it across the entire field. So I mean
it's like it's like I'm talking to like Sterling. So
it's like it's like it's uh no, it was. That's
Travis man, He's just weigs a. He's a special player.
And as long as he does and it works and
(09:49):
then no one knowing, no one's gonna say anything.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
Yeah he's But that's kind of who they've been. That's
who they've been. I do think they work on I
do think they actresship. But that's who they've been. It's
much like the Lions with their trick plays. That's who
they are, right And with Kelsey, you're just sitting there going.
Kelsey's laterals remind me of something. And this this may
(10:16):
sound egotistical. I don't make it a point to talk
about my own basketball career.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
It doesn't nearly measure.
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Up to any of these guys, Okay, but I know
I could really pass the basketball. And John McLeod late
coach at Notre Dame, of course, he coached the NBA
with the Knicks and the Phoenix Suns coach the greatest
game in the NBA Finals ever before overtime game against
the Suns. So he I'll never forget. Like he used
to he would always say, like the you know not, Dame,
(10:44):
don't leave our floor. We make a pass, no, Dame,
two hand passes, two hands on the ball, and I
just it's never been me, you know. And I led
the Big East in assistant turnover ratio, and I've made
plenty of passes where I'd get in the lane, up
in the air and make a pass. And oh yeah,
(11:05):
by the way, I would also I I'll constantly throw
one hand passes.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
That's kind of what I do, right, and I would.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
I remember at the end of the year, he stopped
and he's watching film and he's like, notre dame, we
don't need one hand passes.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
And he looked at me and he's like, you're the
exception to the rule.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
And the point is that with Travis Kelcey, you don't
want to you don't want to kill.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
That part of him. You know, you got to temper it.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
And really it's interesting that Mahomes is sitting there going like,
it's like Sterling I think is one of his kids, right,
I think that's what he means. It's like, but remember
Mahomes is that guy too. He's thrown left hand passes,
he's throwing no look passes, and you got to tell
him to like be smart about it. But you don't
want to take away that creativity gene, especially with Kelsey,
(11:56):
like it's a big place with it. Even one last
year that was called back. The hardest thing though, to
teach a team is what the Chiefs have already figured out.
And it's probably the most frustrating thing about being a
Charger fan and said, we you know to this point
and maybe that's what a hardball changes.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
It's this point.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
It's what the Chargers have never figured out. Hardest thing
to teach them is how to win.
Speaker 2 (12:24):
How to win?
Speaker 1 (12:24):
Just find everybody, just find a way like okay, how well,
it's different every game. There is an absolute skill to that,
and it takes tooth. It takes. It's a skilled coaching
and preparation for anything, and then it helps me to
have the best quarterback. Think of what Belichick and the
(12:47):
Patriots and all the preparation and the stories that we're
hearing now, and they used to water down the footballs
and and and play with them, what they tried. They
did everything in order to prepare themselves just to in
that game. And the Patriots again, he's here's part of
the Patriots story that I don't think gets told a lot.
They would run trick plays. We think of Bill Belichick
(13:10):
being more conservative than Pat Robertson, But the truth is
they would run trick plays. They would try different alignments
to fool you. They did it against right before to
flake Gate. That's what started to to flay kate conversations.
They ran a different alignment which had to tackle eligible
and it confused the Ravens the week before. And remember
(13:31):
Brady was famous again, this is the game before Deflake Kate,
and he's like, maybe they should read the rule book
what he said in front of a camera. So the
point is though, that the Patriots found ways to win.
The Chiefs find ways to win. All of these teams
that are are great. They just like how they win
that game. They didn't play particularly well. That's that's what
(13:52):
winners do. That's what winners do. Yes, jud Jaysu, I
thought you had something to say there Stut Gottlieb show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, could somebody explain to
me this the Lebanese flag sort of story element to
(14:14):
Robert Sala being let go? He he wore Lebanese flag.
I believe on was sewn into his shirt, right, Is
that right when they played in England? Is that correct?
Speaker 6 (14:28):
Yes, Jason, I think do you have a little more
background on.
Speaker 7 (14:33):
Uh No, Okay, you guys will link And I'm thinking
there was some kind of conflict with Woody Johnson's ideology
culture religion.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
I can tell you this because this is what I
was looking up something just to just put that off
to the side for just a second. So Jonathan Jones,
a CBS reported that Sala was gonna fired Nathaniel Hackett,
and then Woody Johnson fired Sala before you could fire
Nathaniel Hackett. Now there's a report from SNY coming in
(15:11):
and saying that was not necessarily the case that Hackett
was going to be fired, but that Sala. This is
from Connor Hughes, who covers the Jets. Sala was going
to demote Hackett from doing the play calling and hand
it over to Todd Downing. And minutes after that decision
was made, Sala was then dismissed as head coach, even
(15:35):
though interimad coach Jeff Ulbrook is expected to give Todd
Downing the play calling and not have Hackett call plays.
So it's just, I.
Speaker 1 (15:45):
Mean, Hackett's a joke, dude. Let's just be honest. If
you saw, if you saw Aaron Rodgers over the weekend, right,
there's the video of him doing the circular motion with
his finger and getting visibly upset at the sideline. That's
a sign forget the damn play in. Come on, give
me the damn play, give me the play. You know, listen,
(16:11):
I can tell you it's something that that we're adjusting
to my my play calling style in basketball. Again, I
understand it's different than football, but remember in basketball there's
no stop action, you know, so if we go cycle horns,
invert you know, invert.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
Uh you know, grenade chase, right, that's that can be.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
A little wordy, sure, and if you're not ready for it,
you're not prepared for it, or even if you have
a time out and you're stuttering whatever, like, at some
point guys will be like, dude, you get the play in.
Remember Nathaniel Hackett couldn't get the play in as the
head coach and play caller of the Denver Broncos. It
was they were like the laughing stock of the league.
They couldn't get the play calls in. And he's had
(16:54):
that problem. I just think this. I understand that we're
gonna sit here and go, wait a second. They met
with Aaron Rodgers last night, and now Robert Sala gets fired.
I have no doubt that Aaron Rodgers did not believe
in Robert Salla. None, none, And there are plenty of
people in the NFL were.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
Like, yeah, he's just not really the head coach. He's
not he's not that.
Speaker 6 (17:19):
Not that so.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
But I don't understand, Like I never understood Nathaniel Hackett Hire.
Speaker 2 (17:28):
Yeah, I just didn't.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
It's like, Aaron, Great, you want that, Like, we'll get
you somebody who's been with you with the Packers or
Hackett can be a quarterback coach, but he can't call places.
He couldn't call plays with the Broncos. Why are we
gonna have him call plays with the Jets when he
struggling to get the play calls in.
Speaker 6 (17:45):
So it's also been pointed out Doug that the Jets
did look at bringing in Arthur Smith this offseason in
a sort of an advisory role, and Smith ended up
choosing the Pittsburgh Steelers. So that was part of Connor
Hughes's report from SNY.
Speaker 2 (18:00):
But do you think he would have taken that ahead
of the Steelers? No?
Speaker 6 (18:02):
Absolutely not No, especially too Yeah, stability organization for sure.
Speaker 2 (18:09):
Yeah, I don't think he fits. Also with he's he likes,
you know, kind of like running quarterbacks. That's not it
Rodgers anymore.
Speaker 6 (18:16):
Now. On the Lebanese flag aspect of this, to Jason's point,
Salah doesn't work every week, but he wore it in
the London game this past week against the Vikings. So
is it Joe Beninho. I know he's a legend in
the Okay, So Joe Beningo went on the Jake Asmin Show.
(18:36):
Jake former intern here at Fox Sports Radio a long
time ago. Jake does a great job with Jets content
and obviously Joe was also a big, big Jets guy.
They were talking about Salas firing. This is what Beningo
had to say about the Lebanese flag aspect of.
Speaker 8 (18:52):
Salaala had a the flag of Lebanon on his shirt
the other day. Now, we all know what's going on
in the Middle East, and I think sala Is just
you know, we know he's Muslim. I think he's representing
the people of Lebanon, and I wonder if that has
played into this in a way as well.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
I don't think so.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
I know that Hesbelah is in Lebanon, but it's there's
there are many that believe that that's not the like
the Lebanese people are are forcefully, you know, being led
by Hesbelah.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
I don't think it's a great look. I don't think
it's something that I would do. But if it's something
you feel strongly about, then you can't not like it's
a Hamas flag. You know, either have a Hummas or
a hesib Lah flag, and that's probably grounds for firing.
It's important to people understand there is a great misrepresentation
out there of what freedom of speech is.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
Right and what freedom of speech is.
Speaker 1 (19:53):
You have people, and I think most people know who
you have powerful people like, hey, we're protecting freedom of speech,
Like you don't have the right to just say we
have the hell you want.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
That's not actually how it works. Freeedom speeches.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
You're allowed to speak out against the government, but freedom
of speech is not not free from ramification. You can't
just freely speak things that are known lies in these
kind of these like I mean, let's listen, I've been
sued for libel and something that I was not lying about,
simply repeating what I had been told from somebody who
at the time I trusted. And so they're like the
(20:27):
idea that you're just you have complete freedom to say
whatever the hell you want, whatever you want to wear,
whatever you want.
Speaker 2 (20:32):
Like, that's not how it works.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
But I don't think and I know Joe, by the way,
Joe's like one of the all time great.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
I love working with him. I was a CBS.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
Everybody likes Joe and but you know, he was a caller.
You know the story Chase. Do have you ever heard
the Joe be in Ingo story?
Speaker 7 (20:52):
Not one, but nope.
Speaker 2 (20:53):
He was a caller, like a constant caller to Francesca.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
I think Francesa, maybe the overnight guys, well Steve Summers
overnight guy. I think he's calling Steve Summers show as well.
And he showed up to a couple of remotes and
they were like and he was like, I wanted.
Speaker 2 (21:11):
To They're like, you should do this.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
So he started buying time on a local stick in
I think in Jersey. And then he went to school,
you know, like broadcast in school, and just kept buying time,
buying time. Then he's a fill and then he became
like a radio is a wfan in New York. It's crazy.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
He went from first time long time to longtime long time.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
I just I do think that we're overthinking in here
with the Lebanese flag. I think we're overthinking of with
a lot of things. No one watched the Jets. Everybody
watched ess like, hey, defense is pretty good, but remember
the defense.
Speaker 2 (21:45):
Lots of penalties.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
And as much as we can sit there and say
that they allowed the fewest number of points over the
past two years.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Part of it was the defense was good, but.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Part of it off also was you know, they were
shortening the game aim to try and hide that offense
more than anything else. But I just I just think
the team lacked discipline. And that's what Aaron Rodgers pointed out.
It even pointed out to me last year that's what
happened with that defense. They lacked discipline. And so when
(22:16):
Aaron Rodgers said, hey, we got to held some guys accountable. Now,
granted Aaron shouldn't have said such a thing, there is
no repriand from Aaron Rodgers, but I think what he
said was a widely held belief about Robert solid. Let
you really in on that relationship, and I will do that.
When you go to dinner with a couple, right is,
(22:38):
everybody wants to present themselves as this happily married couple
or happy, you know, happy couple of people that are
just you know, they're just trying to answer each other,
you know, finish each other's sentences. And then every once
in a while you hear a comment you're like, ooh,
maybe things aren't that good at home? That's what I
heard from Aaron Rodgers with the accountability thing you can
(22:59):
be fired for where hearing the flag of an enemy nation.
I don't think that's what took place here. I kind
of think that's sort of internet trolling, finding something when
sometimes the obvious answer is in fact is in fact
the answer.
Speaker 3 (23:15):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation yet. Catch all of our shows at foxsports

Speaker 1 (23:26):
What about you, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Stug
Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Oh yeah, that's right.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
Hockey is coming back as well, hockey preseason basketball. Yeah,
there's there's interesting goings on. I The Russell Wilson that's
still the backup is really telling, really telling, you know.
I still don't understand why Mike Tomlin didn't has still
(23:54):
hasn't the name justin fields like the starter and Russell
Wilson the backup. Obviously it heard his go, but like
you already have him to do second team raps. Not
sure what's totally behind that one.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (24:09):
Let's welcome in Andrew Brandt, former executive with the Packers,
host of the Business Sports podcast and the DraftKings Network,
also author of the seven Sunday seven newsletter. You just
fall on social media. All the instructions are there to
sign up for the Sunday seven newsletter. What's the reaction
to Robert Salad being fired so early in the season.
Speaker 9 (24:28):
It is early. I didn't expect it. I thought that
they would give him more time, and give any coach
more time than five weeks into the season, especially with
an overseas game, especially with a total rein out game
that he had against the Broncos. But you know, it's
part of an organizational problem with that franchise that I've seen,
where it just seems like a lot of moves are
(24:48):
being made that don't seem to be in coordination with
the other side of the organization. Doug, I don't think
the front off has helped him out, you know. I
think that getting Aaron was a big lift for this organization,
and obviously it created so much excitement and buzz around
it last year, but it hasn't matched with the young talent,
(25:12):
so it's just not working in a way that they
thought it would. They traded a lot for Aaron who
was never going to play down for the Packers.
Speaker 2 (25:19):
Again.
Speaker 9 (25:20):
They traded a third round pick for a son Reddick,
who is choosing to forfeit eight hundred thousand a week
to not show up there. So there's something more endemic,
I think than the head coach here.
Speaker 2 (25:34):
What do you think it is?
Speaker 9 (25:38):
Organizationally? You know, the best organizations seem to be on
the same page with management, with coaching, with personnel, with
cap and contracts. I just don't sense it there. I
just don't sense the plan. You know, the plan is
to give up a lot for Aaron. I get it,
and Aaron's superstar, but you have a defensive minded coach,
(26:00):
You have a lot of talent they've used on defense.
It's not playing well. I think the bigger issue is
not Aaron himself. As you know, I'm a big fan
of Aaron, have known him for a long long time.
But from the moment he was still a member of
the Packers. As you know, they flew out there, they
kissed his ring, they sat in Malibu for four hours
(26:22):
and begging to play. That creates a power dynamic that
you're not used to in sports, where this guy's coming
in and suddenly or not so subtly wanted Alan Lazard
big contract, Randall Cobb and maybe wanted the back of
quarterback Boyle. I mean, it just seems like, you know,
(26:43):
the reason Aaron had problem with the Packers is that
they said, way we're doing management, you'll do playing, and
that wasn't the case here.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
Is there any saving it, because I would say it's
not just coaching, like he's not the same player.
Speaker 2 (26:57):
Is there any saving it?
Speaker 9 (27:01):
Well, again, it's an early look at Aaron. If we're
talking about Aaron, he hasn't played in the year and
he can still spin it. He's not moving as well obviously,
but you know, he doesn't seem to be the MVP
was a few years ago. He's still going to be
a top pick, a number ten twelve quarterback in the league.
That part is fine. They don't seem to be getting
(27:22):
out of the running back what they hoped for in
haul and the defense hasn't lived up those expectations. So
maybe that's coaching. Maybe it's leadership. Like I mentioned with Aaron,
I mean, there seemed to be a little bit of
tension with the head coach. I know he denied it,
but one guy is saying something about the cadence. The
(27:43):
other guy's saying, no, it's not the cadence. You know,
it's like, maybe that change can help. Maybe there's more
symbiotic relationship between leadership and the quarterback.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
Andrew Brandt's our guest here on the Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Nobody liked the Danny Dimes contry
the second it was signed too much money? Uh, playing
pretty well? Now again, we got a long way to go, right,
we're five weeks in.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
It's a long long way to go.
Speaker 1 (28:10):
The last twelve weeks feel like, feel like fifty. But
what are the Giants' options moving forward?
Speaker 9 (28:20):
Well, you know, when we talked two years ago, I
said to you, I said, what are you going to
do if you don't? And that's always the discussion. You know,
you can bemoan Danny, you can bemoan the fact that
market was X at that time, forty million a year,
But what are you going to do? You're going to
start over with a quarterback or are you going to
pay it? They decided to pay it now. As I
always talk about, on these quarterback contracts or any contracts,
(28:43):
they're never fully guaranteed except for Watson and they can
get out. So they've got ten weeks or twelve weeks
to figure out do they get out or do they
not get out because the guarantees two years. This will
be two years at forty million a year, and then
they decide what to do. You know, everybody loves getting
on Danny when he plays badly. Obviously he played well
(29:06):
last week. We'll see where it goes. But you know,
to me the test case and we can put aside
the concussion talk. Doug was Tua because I thought that
was a situation where the team would say, all right,
we're just gonna wait on this because if we pay him,
we got to pay him fifty plus million a year,
and why not wait. But they didn't wait. They jumped in.
(29:30):
So just like Danny two years ago, we have Tua
this year. And it's like teams just are scared of
not doing a deal, maybe scared of franchise tag, maybe
scared of things like that same thing with Dak Prescott.
It's like you're scared of the unknown, and I guess
I understand that, but you have to make a decision.
(29:51):
Are you going to jump in at what is now
fifty plus sixty million a year or are you going
to take your chances?
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Speaking of to it, We've discussed this on the show.
So what's the status of the remainder of his contract
in regards to if he retires, if he doesn't retire.
Speaker 9 (30:08):
A little complicated, but stay with me. If he retires,
you know, he's got forty three million this year, forty
two million of it in a signing bonus that's his.
But I say that with the caveat that a guy
just can't take a huge signing bonus and retire. The
team has an ability to come after the per raded
(30:29):
part of the bonus that wasn't allocated in the first year.
Would the Dolphins do that? In reality, I wouldn't think so,
but again you have to note they would do they
would have an ability to do that. If he continues
to play or not retire and unable to play, you know,
he would activate his injury guarantee, which goes through twenty
(30:52):
twenty six, But that would be saying he would not
be able to play this year, next year, and the
year following. Based on a concussion in September of twenty
twenty four. I have a feeling he's going to be
wanting to play pretty soon. So that's unlikely. So I
think what happens is he may take longer than these
(31:15):
four weeks. But I know the other discussion you probably had, Doug,
is this is a twenty six year old kid. It's
feeling great and just got a new contract. I don't
care how many doctors caution him. I do not see
him walking away. I just don't see it for a
twenty six year old it's feeling good now and has
(31:35):
a new contract. I just don't see it.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
I know.
Speaker 1 (31:38):
But it wasn't like it was a huge. It wasn't
like he got crushed, you know, I know, and.
Speaker 9 (31:45):
You know medical, you know, help medical. He'll find you know.
If he's talking to doctors, there's somebody out there that says, yeah,
it's fine. I mean, and I guess the bigger pictures
how many twenty six year olds are thinking about their
life at forty six?
Speaker 3 (32:00):
Very very yeah.
Speaker 1 (32:05):
Yeah, it's it's a it's a fast aning one, really
really yeah.
Speaker 9 (32:10):
I think fasting one.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
Doug Gotlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio. A reminder
you can pick up the Sunday seven newsletter. It gets
the number seven my Sunday seven Dot com Andrew Brant,
former executive with the Packers, host of the Business Sports
podcast on the DraftKings Network, of course, the author of
the Sunday seven newsletter that's my Sunday seven dot com. Yeah,
(32:34):
I mean you mentioned the Cowboys with DAK, and you
know they had a great comeback win. But man, the
mistakes are are there? There's a there's some weird interaction
the sideline as well. What we I don't think we
talked since what's your reaction to Dallas acquiescing when they
were gonna hold firm and then ultimately extending DAK.
Speaker 9 (32:56):
I don't get it. I was in Green Bay ten years.
My philosophy was get to him early, if not year
before free agency or two years before free agency, certainly
at the beginning of the off season February March. They waited,
they waited, they waited. The price went up. The price
went up, the price went up. I heard all along, Doug.
(33:17):
I think I told you this on the show a
few months ago, that the number with Dak was always
going to start with a sixth. And I said, well,
dubas not going to do that, And they did it.
They did it on the morning of the opener. Just
shocking to me. They did it with Lamb. They wait
till the end. And what I've been doing Doug with
(33:39):
the Cowboys is trying to put on my negotiating hat
because I know Jones is a smart guy. Why why
wait till the end and say top dollar? I can
only come up with, well, you know, you keep it
in your account till last minute, and then it goes
to their account at the last minute, so you save
a little money with interest whatever, or hey, Dak may
(34:02):
step in a hole, you know, Lamb may step in
a ditch. I mean, I just it's hard for me
to come up with that reasoning other than those two ideas,
which aren't strong ones. I mean, it's just I don't
get it.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
You have I would have.
Speaker 9 (34:20):
I would have I would have let Dak play it out.
Speaker 1 (34:22):
You have worked with with Howie in the past as well.
That Yell and Hurts contract doesn't.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
Look like a good one.
Speaker 9 (34:28):
Now, well, they did get too early. They're under the
market or you know that year as soon as he
signed in Burrow and Herbert and Lamar, Lamar's different category.
We're pretty pretty far over that one. Not that I'm
not that's a cheap contract. But uh, let's get hurt
(34:52):
some more time. You know, I looked at one of
these odds things that they're still favored to win that division.
Speaker 2 (34:57):
So so we'll.
Speaker 1 (34:58):
See my Sunday seven the number seven at my Sunday
seven dot com. That's where you can check out the
Sunday seven newsletter. Of course, to download the Business of
Sports podcast in the DraftKings Network, He's the one and
only Andrew Bran Andrew, thanks so much for joining us.
Speaker 9 (35:12):
Always a bleacher Doug stug.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Byer Uh, what
do you think?
Speaker 2 (35:21):
Man?
Speaker 1 (35:22):
I respect and appreciate your opinion on this thing, because
you know, I've been pro aeron for a long time.
I don't I'm not saying I've changed and I'm anti Erin.
I just I think he's the men's talent. But I
definitely think that this thing has gone sideways and he
played a factor in it. But I also think that
Robert Solid didn't. It wasn't like you reported himself as
(35:44):
a great head coach or some other things he said.
And I think that the cadence thing. Then all of
a sudden, you throw your offense according to under the bus.
I didn't think that was a strong look a week ago.
What do you think of the of the firing of
Robert solid.
Speaker 6 (35:56):
I am surprised this has not been something that the
Jets have done before. I just this Rogers thing has
just not turned out for the New York Jets. And
you talked with it with Andrew Brandt there just a
little bit ago. Doesn't necessarily seem the same quarterback. Remember though,
(36:16):
that they were within a drive of possibly taking out
the Vikings, but Aaron Rodgers through his third interception of
the game in the in Vikings territory in London this
past weekend, So they were that close to knocking off
a four and zero team, one of two unbeatens in
the NFL, and it's the head coach that needs to go,
(36:40):
And that is just that surprising. But the thing that
I've thought about over the last couple of weeks, and
maybe this comes off of the book that we have
discussed on this show, but I don't know how in
the world Robert Sala or anybody else there exists when
Aaron Rodgers wants to be the smartest man in the
room with everything, and we may roll our eyes, maybe
(37:04):
you believe in what he says. When he's not talking
about football, that doesn't necessarily matter. What's his whole thing.
Do your research, read it, look it up. I can't
imagine what it's like dealing with that attitude, Doug, when
he has twenty years experience in doing that job. Like
it's one thing if you're talking about something that's political
(37:26):
and you could go back and forth on it, but
there would be no moving Aaron Rodgers off of his
spot for something that we know that he knows. And
I can't imagine that working relationship with the Jets. I mean,
it's amazing that Nathaniel Hackett is still around, but I
think we all know why he's still around because of
Aaron Rodgers. If there was anything that maybe needed to
(37:47):
change with the run game or whatever the case is,
it's probably that side of the ball. But I am
just yeah, it's just tough. This is not worked out
and will not work out with the Jets.
Speaker 1 (37:58):
You know, it's interesting, I stick with you for a second,
see if this makes sense to you guys. Okay, so
obviously Brady, we I think people forget that Brady. For
a decade, there was the most hated guy in the
NFL because he was quarterback of the Pats, right, and
they were. But remember this is the deflate gate he
(38:19):
was he was seen as a liar and a cheater,
and of course that was like a decade after more
and even more after Spygate, and then he went to
Tampa and all of a sudden kind of reinvented his
image because it was away from Belichick, away from the Patriots,
and he ends up, you know, winning a super Bowl. Now,
the real Brady, I thought came out two weeks ago
(38:42):
when you know, he talked about Baker Mayfield and it
wasn't it wasn't a daycare like. Turns out like he
was much He was just like Belichick in terms of
his drive to be great and his lack of willingness
to that. This is not kittily wings, This is not
designed for fun. This is the Nation Football League, and
we win championships here, right, So the image, the funt
facing image is not really it's hard working, don't care,
(39:06):
don't care about your feelings, can get to work. The
point is that there was some image rehab there because
they went to Tampa and win one. I think that
that Aaron was focused on image rehab. Going back to
last year, Remember he did all those things in New York.
He was happy and smiling and I'm all into the
process whenever. And then your two, the real Aaron Rodgers
came out like you can only fake it for so long,
(39:27):
and this is who he is? Was it Mark Murphy
right who said? And I know, mister Murphy, I'm you know,
I consider him a friend. I haven't asked him about this,
but remember he was what was the word that he
said he was challenging?
Speaker 2 (39:41):
Was that what he said?
Speaker 6 (39:43):
Yeah? It was something I can't remember and I don't
want to say it because I can't remember the official phrasing.
Speaker 2 (39:49):
Yeah, and that's that's what it is.
Speaker 1 (39:52):
It's like he's demanding, as any of these guys are
of complicated fella.
Speaker 2 (39:58):
Complicated fella yep. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
And when you know, when you're with somebody for a decade,
you're like complicated fella, Like yeah, yeah, Like he demands
everybody else bus they're asking over, they're doing whatever. But
then like you know, in the it is like man,
I'm gonna go to I'm gonna go to Egypt and
doing a lot.
Speaker 2 (40:16):
You know, it's complicated fella, complicated fella.
Speaker 6 (40:19):
You know, you bring up Brady, and I think it's
a really good point, Doug, in terms of the rehabbing
and the image and now it's the real Aaron Rodgers
shows up if you will. But you also look at
the Patriots who didn't give in to Tom Brady like
they may have for that long period of time, but
in the end they decided that a move was needed
and they moved off of him. And I don't know
(40:42):
if it's apples to orange or you know, apples to apples,
maybe apples to oranges. But maybe this, this is the
danger of doing it. Maybe the Jets looked at it
and said, gosh, the Patriots have fallen off without Brady.
They should have given him the power. We should give
all of our power to the to the quarterback that
that we want. But I just don't think those situations
usually work out.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
They do not. They do not.
Speaker 1 (41:06):
And look, if you look at Brady's thing, you know,
I mean, I do think that he got Arians fired.
I don't think there's any question he got Aarons fired,
you know. And I think it's because Arians is a
guy that you know it likes to have a good time.
Like let's not take it too seriously. Five o'clock, let's
go have a drink. And he's like, I just don't
work that way. And Brady got to bring in a
(41:26):
couple of his guys didn't maybe have the autonomy. It's
an interesting one. Here's two quarterbacks and like you we
can throw Farv in there. Hey, Farv went to New York.
It was working well until he decided to play through injury,
which of course was you know, part of that holding
on that streak. Then he goes to Minnesota. First year
(41:47):
was great, second year like, I didn't want to come back.
He comes back and he's not very good, and then
the Metrodome actually collapsed. It was very symbolic to me,
like here the team's collapsing and Farre's crew is collapsing.
His streak is over, and then the Metrodome collapse. But
there's some interesting case study that in that with with
all of them, all of them Byer, I know you
(42:11):
think the worst of most people.
Speaker 2 (42:12):
I'm guessing you think the worst of Aaron Rodgers in.
Speaker 6 (42:14):
This case, I just I just think he got his way.
I don't blame in a way there's I don't blame
Aaron Rodgers because he wasn't the one that was empowered.
The Woody Johnson and the Johnson family are the ones
who said, yes, you're going to be our guy where
we want you. Joe Douglas the same thing, even Sla
(42:37):
I guess you know for a portion of that probably
went along with it. But that's that's who I really
give the the criticism to is Aaron Rodgers. In that
last season, Doug, they were eight and nine, Remember they
lost that came to the Lions and the regular at
the end of the regular season. Before it came in,
it wasn't a great, great Aaron Rodgers like we had
(42:58):
seen the previous two years. So that was probably the
quarterback that you were hoping to have. You were hoping
the motivation of proving the Packers wrong last year would
fuel him. But now you're a year separated from him.
So I almost I almost blamed just Jets ownership for
signing off on this. Aaron Rodgers is who he is,
He's shown who he is, so maybe we shouldn't necessarily
be surprised.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
Okase to your thoughts, my how about.
Speaker 7 (43:23):
This, guys, how does DeVante Adams play into this? Because
I think a great way to reverse kind of the
the negative sting to this story would be trading for DeVante.
You could look at it two ways. Would Deavante Adams
want to do it? Is it his decision? And if
you bring in DeVante? Does that just kind of like
(43:45):
put even more of this on Aaron Rodgers, like, not
only did he get his head coach fired, but he
got his old his old player back, and it puts
the pressure squarely on him to win this year because
I think this is what he Aautsin's thinking, this, this
is my one year to get something done and then
we can say goodbye to that pain of the ass
(44:07):
Aaron Rodgers and move on. I think this is a
all the eggs in one basket. So I'll rephrase the question.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
Thank you question there.
Speaker 7 (44:17):
You think they get DeVante Adams.
Speaker 2 (44:20):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (44:22):
I don't, but listen, I understand. I mean Joe Douglason's
last year, Aaron Rodgers, probably his last year. It's it's
not a crazy thought, it's far from a crazy thought.
Speaker 6 (44:33):
Might as well.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
I don't know. I don't know if Davanta Adams is like, yeah,
I'm in for that.
Speaker 1 (44:39):
You just fired your coach here two and three, Aaron
Appierce did not be particularly good, and we got to
play outside in the cold in New York.
Speaker 6 (44:45):
Like, I don't think it's what they need at all
on that team. I don't think you need another guy
to throw the football too. You've got guys that you
can throw the football too. But if you're going to
go all Rogers, you might as to go all rogers
and do what you can to bring them in. So
(45:06):
I wouldn't. It wouldn't surprise me. I wouldn't put it
this way. I wouldn't. I wouldn't ease off Doug like
you are saying for the simple fact, Devil, if you're
gonna kick Sala out, you might as just ride this
wave the rest of the way. You can't sit on
the fence. You're either all in or you're not, so
you might as well make them happy and then re
evaluate everything at the end of the year.
Speaker 1 (45:24):
Yeah, yeah, that said, Well, what a what a conundrum.
