We got a lot to get to today, probably way
too much New York Jets talk, you know. We we're
gonna buy into what all these Syracuse Mets, Jets, sports radio,
(00:46):
sports TV dorks and many of them my friends, I
call them dorks lovingly so discuss average football team firing
their coach. But we'll get to it. Plus Dodgers, padres
and a level of news which I don't think most
are familiar with. And I have a little bit of
a different perspective on this By the way, also I
(01:08):
would encourage you to download our podcast, not just of
this show, but we also have a podcast only version
hour of the show, and on that I believe Matt
Holliday is going to join us. That's the the the
third hour of the show. Just type in Doug out
we download podcasts and we'll talk about just Dodgers Padres.
It's such a good, interesting series. And of course Dodgers
(01:29):
now backs seemingly fully against the wall and a bullpen
day after losing last night to the Padres. But let's
put baseball aside because Aaron rodgers appearance on Pat McAfee
was shifted until Wednesday. Now, there's a couple of different
levels to it, a couple of different levels to it.
(01:50):
There's the there's the fake news from a guy who
has put out fake news before or also been a
conspiracy theorist before. And there's the ownership piece to it.
And I'll get to what I mean by both of
those in a second. Let me play for you a
little bit of what Aaron Rodgers said on the Pat
McAfee show, and then we'll react to it. Here here's
(02:12):
Rogers talking about the Robert Sala firing.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
As far as any of the ridiculous allegations out there,
I'm not going to spend more than one sentence in
response to it, and that is that I resent any
of those accusations because they're patently false. And it's interesting
the amount of power that people think that I have,
(02:37):
which I don't. But I love Robert, and it was,
you know, one of those days yesterday.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
He talked about his Robert, his relationship with Salah.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Yesterday was a day that reminds you of the simple
fact that all of us who've played know all too well,
and that's that it's a tough business. It's a beautiful profession,
it's incredible, it's done so much for our lives, but
it's also a really tough business. I love coach Sala.
We have a very solid relationship we have since you know,
(03:15):
I met him in twenty twenty one and had a
nice conversation when they came and visited us for joint practices.
He was a big reason why I came to the Jets,
you know, I felt like the team, you know, was
a solid team, had a relationship with coach Hackett, obviously,
and I really liked coach Sala. Everything that Matt Lafleur
(03:36):
said about him the few interactions I've had, the times
that we went against him, I just had a lot
of respect for him.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Then there was this in talking about the fact that
he met with Woody Johnson prior to Salad being fired.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
I did talk to Woody wood He called me on
Monday night. We had a short conversation. I appreciated the call.
It was a genuine call. He just asked me how
I was doing. You know, obviously I got rolled up
on in the game, and you know, my ankle got
pretty banged up. So he just called and was asking
how I was doing. And you know, we talked about
(04:15):
the game and how he disappointed I was in my
performance and that I'm going to play better and we're
going to get this thing turned around. And then we
hung up. Wood He has no obligation to let me
know of what his plans are. Whether or not he
knew what he was doing in that moment is inconsequential.
I just appreciated the call that he was checking on me.
It was just like a friend call, like he would do.
(04:36):
Hey man, I saw that hitting the game, You're doing okay.
And we had a nice short five minute conversation and
then that was that.
Speaker 1 (04:45):
So here's the thing. I'm willing, by the way, to admit,
or I'm willing to accept that Aaron Rodgers did not
go in and say I want Robert solid fired. But
I also know, and I think all of us realize
that if Aaron Rodgers wanted to play for Robert Salah
and Robert Sala alone, do you know who be the
(05:06):
head coach of the New York Jets today? Robert Salah? Right,
like we're all and and again, this is not specific
to Aaron Rodgers. I've said this about Kobe because Kobe
got Mike Brown fired. Walked in said, Mike, this is
not working. Mike Brown was gone. It's like, what ten
games in the season, they were trying to run the
(05:27):
Princeton offense. It was a disaster with Dwight Howard and
uh and Steve Nash. Right, Steve Nash got hurt. And
I don't have Dean barely played for the Lakers if
at all. It was a mess. Right, Kobe walked in
said the same working. Lebron James has gotten plenty of
coaches fired. He tried to get some coaches fired, has
(05:49):
succeeded and get David Blacket fired. And what I think
is amazing is for all of Aaron Rodgers' honesty, And
again I believe him here. I believe that though he
lost a lot of credibility in the media and in
the public with lying about being inoculated and when he
(06:15):
wasn't vaccinated and trying to be clever, I actually believe
that Aaron Rodgers didn't say fire that dude. Well, maybe
I don't totally believe it, and I'll get to that
in a second, But even if that is true, Aaron
Rodgers absolutely positively has the power to say, would he
(06:38):
What are we doing? Robert solid is not the problem.
We got other issues. Let's not do that, you know,
Let's work towards a better solution. Let's get better offensively,
Let's figure out what we want to do play calor wise.
Let's move forward. Because the truth is that Aaron Rodgers,
though he may not be capable of coaching a team,
(06:59):
and he may have this friendship with a guy who
clearly can't call plays, get him in on time and
be efficient as a play caller, the fact is that
Aaron Rodgers has been a part of a championship organization
for the better part of his career. And so if
Aaron Rodgers is like, look, I don't know if what
Robert Sala is doing not doing when I'm just in
the film room, I'm just in the QB room. That's
(07:20):
all I'm trying to do. But this is not a
championship caliber coaching roster. We're not being coached like a
championship team. I just I wonder at any point will
anybody just own it? Right? We've had murderers admit to it.
Why can't we have a quarterback go yep, he wasn't
(07:43):
good enough. I like him, hell of a guy, not
good enough at his job. Sorry, we move on. And
if nothing else, if you have truly nothing to do
with it, there could have been the gosh, I'll be
honest with you, had I known that Woody was going
to make a coaching change, I would have stopped it
from happening. But that's not what happened. And that's why
(08:06):
so many people called b ys. Because even if Aaron
Rodgers didn't get Robert solid fired, even if we're willing
to go hey, he didn't go in. He just I mean, like, look,
the timeline of events is at least a little curious. Wait,
so you talked to Woody before he talked to Sala.
He fired Sala and it never came up. Ever, you're
(08:32):
a Hall of Fame quarterback who's won a Super Bowl,
He've won what four MVPs, and the owner of the
team made a change at head at the head coach
position and it never came up. Seems a little odd.
He's under no obligation to tell me. Really, Aaron, weren't
(08:56):
you upset in Green Bay? Remember you had to have
how much tequila he had? You just remember that he
had to have tequila. And the big thing in Green
Bay was not just they drafted a quarterback instead of
a wide receiver when they took Jordan Love, it's that
they didn't tell them. People say all the time, Hey, man,
I can handle it. Just tell me the truth, Aaron
(09:16):
Rodgers especially, so again, if you believe this tale, we're fine.
If you believe this tale, then Aaron Rodgers, at minimum,
at minimum should have said, I wish I wish you
would have asked me, because I would have said, don't
fire Robert. In the middle would be he should have
(09:40):
he should have said, don't fire Robert. And the reality
is there is point zero zero zero zero one percent
chance that the owner of the team talks to the
Hall of fame quarterback of the team and doesn't talk
to him about firing the head coach of the team,
(10:01):
especially when the quarterback of the team has had a
major issue with his previous franchise over being integrated into
the decision making, right, I mean, that was the thing.
So wait, you go to Aaron Rodgers to see what
players you want to pick up. You extend Aaron Rodgers
when he'd only played four games with the team. You
(10:25):
tell Aaron Rodgers is so important that when he gets
hit and gets smoked in London that you check on him.
But you don't bring up Oh hey, by the way,
I don't want to bury the lead here and listen.
I know you gotta go, but I'm gonna fire the
head coach with the next phone call. Now again, I'm
(10:50):
not holding it against him, the fact that he lied
about not being vaccinated, I'm not. I don't care. Everybody
else does, I don't. I'm just looking at just look
at the facts. He has had an issue with the
Packers over being involved in decision making, and I'm sorry,
but picking up a slot wide receiver or a fourth
(11:10):
wide receiver, or one of your buddies is offensive coordinator,
a quarterback coach, or whatever. Pales in comparison to firing
the head coach five games in the year and they
don't tell you, and he's like, oh, it's his decision.
He's allowed to do it. He doesn't have to bring
me in. I was born at night, not last night.
Speaker 3 (11:31):

(12:00):
Of course, he of the NFL Network fame, he is.
He's the guy when the NFL Draft comes on, and
of course this year you'll see it right here in
my new hometown of Green Bay, Wisconsin. He'll be here.
He'll be evaluating. We'll ask him about Drake May and uh,
Drake May getting his first start with the New England Patriots.
Plus we got a lot of other things to get
before we do, though, let me get you quick update. Okay,
(12:21):
well let me you know what, Let's just go to
DJ and And and bring him in. DJ joins us
now on the Doug Goatlib Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Do you want to wax poetic on your padres? Are
you okay with the like? My thing on the padres
is this, I think they got the Dodgers kind of
playing their game. The bat flips, the trash talk, the
staring guys down, the messing with the crowd. I you know, look,
(12:43):
I think there's other reasons that they're winning and probably
gonna win this series. But I do think part of
it is this is the style of baseball. These are
the players that they have, and they got the Dodgers.
They're in the Dodgers head a little bit about how
they play.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
All right, Can I give you the counter argument to that?
Speaker 5 (12:58):
Dog?
Speaker 4 (12:58):
Sure, it's it's crazy analysis. You got to wait for it.
Speaker 5 (13:02):
Here.
Speaker 4 (13:03):
The Pottery's are better than the Dodgers. This isn't some miracle.
They beat him eight out of thirteen times during the
regular season. They took them out of the playoffs the
last time they played them. The Padres don't strike out.
The Dodgers starting pitchers have three strikeouts through three games three,
so I just I kind of laugh. It's like they're
in their head and they're emotional, and we got to
(13:23):
match our intensity. I'm like, they're they're better. They're just
better than the Dodgers. So we'll see if they can
get the last win here. But they've got better starting pitching.
Both bullpens are good, but I'd take the Padres and
the Padres have a longer lineup so well. And you know,
the Dodgers defense stinks.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
But are we okay with saying all that can be
true and they're in their head a little bit?
Speaker 4 (13:44):
No, Yeah, they might be in their head, but I
just think sometimes I hear that and I think like
people are saying somehow they're like punching above their weight,
and I'm like, I don't know, I've watched these games.
If you tell me that anybody's better than Frando Tatis
in this series, I'm not watching the same thing anybody
else is watching.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Daniel Jeremiah join us here on The Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 5 (14:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
I mean, I Jay Stu, you even would say you
saw this one coming a mile away, correct.
Speaker 5 (14:09):
I did.
Speaker 6 (14:09):
I had almost zero faith in my team coming into
this series for all the reasons that Daniel just pointed out,
But then the context of being a Dodger fan in
the last ten years, the hallmark of a Andrew Friedman
team is to have amazing regular seasons and fold in
the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
And it's getting old, all right.
Speaker 4 (14:31):
That one thing said that being said, I'm scared to
death tonight because I just it's just baseball's weird. And uh,
I mean, Connie Cold get three home runs tonight and
you go back to LA and anything could happen in
a game five, So uh, it's it's so stressful, Doug.
What I was just telling jay Stu before I came on,
I'm like, I have tickets tonight, but I'm gonna just
stay home watch with my son. Why do I care
(14:53):
so much? Like I'm not really able how any other way?
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Hold on? How good are your tickets?
Speaker 4 (14:58):
Well, my dad's had season tickets for thirty years. There
are three rows.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
How good are your tickets? Again? If you don't have
to humble brag your dad, who's an amazing man and
one of the nation's great preachers. Okay, how good are
your tickets?
Speaker 4 (15:10):
There's three roads up from first base.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
I don't know, dude, I kind of think you gotta
go to the game.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
I mean, but we've had good mojo. When I want
me and my son went last night, they won. I
feel like I don't want to mess with that mojo
when we're to get You.
Speaker 1 (15:28):
Went and they won. You're not going today. No, you're
messing with the mojo by staying home.
Speaker 4 (15:32):
I can't. I can't take him because he's the junior.
Got football practice, so he wouldn't be able to get
down there in time. So you got to make that decision.
You got to stick with the mojo.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
So that what time is the practice?
Speaker 4 (15:45):
They practiced till six yesterday? We left the guy I
pulled them a little early, which you know, whether or
not that was the right thing to do as a parent,
I don't know, but we we went down there yesterday.
But like, we can't. We can't miss part of practice
two days in a row, so we gotta we.
Speaker 5 (15:57):
Gotta go to the practice.
Speaker 1 (15:58):
Still six games? What time?
Speaker 4 (16:00):
Six o eight?
Speaker 1 (16:02):
How far is the drive?
Speaker 4 (16:04):
Twenty minutes? Parking another ten to get in. He doesn't drive,
he drives, Yeah, but I wouldn't have the other parking
spot for him.
Speaker 1 (16:13):
There sediment over father's son elimination of the Dodgers. I
don't know. I think. I think, as they say in Surfing,
Eddie would go, it's Doug ottlib show here on Fox
Sports Radio. All right, let's let's get to Aaron Rodgers. Okay,
so let me get the straight. Aaron Rodgers claims to
have no had no working knowledge they were going to
(16:35):
fire Robert Sala, even though Woody Johnson called Aaron Rodgers
before they fired Robert Sala. Okay, so at at least
Aaron Rodgers could have come out and said or could
have called Woody Johnson back and said like, hey man,
what are you firing the guy for? I like the guy.
He's it's not the problem. Okay. The reality is that
(16:57):
Aaron Rodgers probably didn't think Robert Sala was good enough,
and Woody Johnson wanted to fire him, especially when he
was trying to get rid of his boy is offensive coordinator,
and that's what was done. He just all he doesn't
want to own it, right, which there's not there actually
be nothing wrong with owning and going like, look, I've
been on championship teams. That's not a championship coach. I
like him, but it's not there, Like, are we really
gonna believe that Aaron Rodgers had nothing to do with it?
Speaker 4 (17:20):
Yeah? I mean, I'm always gonna take people at their
word on that stuff, and that's what they say. I'm
not gonna say I know otherwise. I just it's it's
a little bit interesting just that they hired his hand picked,
you know, offensive coordinator before they even made the trade
to acquire him. That's how far they were going to
go to, uh, you know, to make Aaron Rodgers comfortable
(17:42):
and happy.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
They let him go get random like it's it's Pickers East.
They let him make personnel decisions, but they're not gonna
They're not gonna at least let him in give him
a heads up on the biggest personnel decision you can
possibly make in an NFL team, which is changing head coach.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
Yeah. I mean, I guess I maybe it's the conspiracy theory.
My conspiracy theory might lean more towards I don't know
that Aaron Rodgers would have told him to fire him.
But I also don't know that Aaron Rodgers, you know,
stood in his way to take the take the hit.
You know, that's just outside looking in. I just have
a hard time thinking and decision of that magnitude gets
made without consulting the guy who you've literally built the
(18:21):
entire roster, in entire plan around.
Speaker 1 (18:23):
So that's not just that. But his big issue with
the Packers was that he wasn't consulted when they when
they went and drafted.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
Jordan Love right, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
So you come from a relationship where they don't consult
you that he's they say, hey, we're going to consult
you on stuff. They do consult you on stuff. Then
they played poorly. He plays poorly in London. The the
owner calls him and it doesn't come up, come on, like,
what are we even doing? What are we even doing?
(18:54):
Oh all that like we're all that naive that And
Pat mcvane's going, oh yeah, oh sure, absolutely there don't
you know. I don't buy that for a second. All right,
here's here's my question. Okay, yeah, is he just because
I saw him? You know, hey, get the play in
he was doing the finger circle thing like let's go yeah, right,
so he's clearly like his guy struggles to get the
(19:15):
play and that's what happened when they were in Denver
and he was the head coach. They couldn't get the
plays in Okay. How much of his issues are the
offense and the personnel. How much of it is he
ain't that he's not Aaron Rodgers anymore.
Speaker 4 (19:30):
Yeah, I think you see glimpses of what he was
as a thrower. But I also think that his success,
you know, a lot of it the way he plays,
his style of play is dependent on you know, kind
of I'll say, same page asm in terms of not
only the play calling, but being on the same page
with his white House. And you can see even though
you know, Garrett Wilson caught a bunch of balls this
(19:51):
last week, they targeted a bazillion times, but they still
it's all just quick hitters and slants. They're getting nothing
down the field. There's no there's no you know, us
to rhythm and timing there. And then you saw on
the game deciding pick. You know, Mike Williams has been
kind of a fish out of water there. You know,
he has coming off of injuries and played a ton,
but you know, he tries to throw a back shoulder
(20:12):
if they're not on the same page, he's like to
turn around, picked off game over. So you know, I
think that needs time to kind of gel for that stuff.
But I don't know that anybody is going to be
patient in that situation that they're in right now. Obviously,
when you've changed the head coach after five weeks that
speaks to that. So at this point in time, I'm
not I don't think DeVante Adams is what he was
(20:34):
maybe three four years ago, but I could you know,
you're you're already pot committed. If you're the Jets, like
I would, just you might as just go do it.
At least it's somebody who's going to have timing and
he's going to be comfortable with Rogers. You're you're all
in on this whole thing, so you might as well
take whatever, you know, whatever measure you need to take.
Speaker 1 (20:50):
Daniel Jeremiah is our guest. You're on the Doug Gottlieb
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Does DeVante Adams make it
makes sense for the Raiders, right They're.
Speaker 4 (20:59):
Going nowhere hundred percent?
Speaker 1 (21:00):
Yeah, I mean, and oh yeah, by the way, if
the Jets want to give you a second round pick
that looks right now like a high second round pick
as opposed to the Chiefs that's a low second that's
basically a third round pick. But does it make sense
to the Jets?
Speaker 4 (21:13):
Yeah, I think it does, just for you know, the
reasons that I just gave. I just think that you're
you're gonna you're gonna sink or swim based off Aaron
Rodgers playing well, and you've already you've already kind of
given him everything else that he's asked for in terms
of coaching and personnel. I just I think you're so
far down this road you might as well just finish
it off. And I would hope that you could get
(21:35):
that deal done for a third. I know our buddy
Tom's probably asking for a two. That would be a
heck of a hall. If you were to get a two,
considering the money that's owed and considering this can be
a one year rental, I would take a three, especially
if if you think, if you don't believe in the
Jets and think that could be a high three. I'd
definitely rather get a high three from the Jets than
trade him inside the division for a two.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
Stug gott Leap Show here on Fox Sports Trader Drake,
he's gonna get going to get the start. You know,
I love Jacoby Brissett as like a backup leader, but
clearly not good enough and it's not a particularly good team.
But again, we do run into this like we're seeing
these maybe Baker is he had some weaponry around him
and that thing went bad. Uh. But you know Sam
(22:18):
Donald's with the Jets. That wasn't a well enough coach, team,
didn't have good enough team around him, Right, you fear
the I'll just use the Sam Donald. There's been others, right,
David Carr, what's your level of confidence that this is
the right time to play Drake may Well?
Speaker 4 (22:33):
First of all, actually I really like Drake may and
I'm excited for him to play. I'm not I'm not
confident that it's gonna go well, just based off what's
in front of them. You know, they've had some they've
had a couple of competitive losses so far. I think
they have two close losses and you know, kind of
got their doors blown off twice. But is he it's
(22:55):
two part of right. Is he better than Jacoby Brissett?
Speaker 5 (22:57):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (22:58):
He better? You know, does he give you a better
chance to end Sure is he set up to be,
you know, successful and confidence building going forward his career
based off how they have personnel in front of him. No,
so that's gonna be their defense. You have to play
lights out and they're going to have to minimize the
amount of times he drops back or you know, not
(23:19):
only will you struggle. I think this is kind of
one of those situations where you could kind of stun
a kid. So I thought they would wait a little longer.
I thought they try and give him, you know, maybe
three four games at the end of the year and
not expose him to the group that he has there.
But man, they made that call a little earlier than
I expected.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
What did Caleb Williams do better? Last week?
Speaker 5 (23:39):
One?
Speaker 4 (23:39):
He got protected? So but he's every week. I said
it from the Houston game, you know, in that Houston
game and it was on national TV, and he got
just obliterated and hit a million times. He showed that
he was tough. They were close on a couple of
big plays down the field. A couple of the chunk
plays they did end up getting were the result of penalties.
So you look at a box score three weeks later,
(24:01):
you don't get any credit for those yards even though
you made the right read, the right throat, you get
a PI, you get the yards, but you don't get
it individually. So I was seeing, Okay, that was a
good kind of a little glimpse of what he could do.
Then the next week a little bit more and then
now you see it. You actually give him clean pockets,
and he was, you know, kind of look like college Caleb.
(24:21):
He was. He was dealing it all over the field.
So I think with young quarterbacks you just want to
see those glimmers of hope in every game. And I've
seen more from him each and every week, and he's
playing with more trust and confidence, not not having to wait,
you know, on guys, just trusting they're going to be
where they're supposed to be and let the ball go
with some anticipation.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
DJ, you are the best, whether you sit on the
couch or you sit in the stands. Enjoy the game tonight, man,
I know how big a fan you are. I appreciate joining.
Speaker 4 (24:49):

won't come in, won't come in, won't come in. It
(25:32):
was a Wednesday? Is it a hump day? Ump? Hump Day?
I just the quick aside. I know it was an
insurance commercial. I'm not gonna name who it was because
I don't remember. Actually don't remember who it was. It
doesn't matter. The point is that was a great commercial,
right the camel walking through the office with the cubicles,
talk about hump day with the camel that has an obvious,
(25:54):
quite obvious hump That's that's that's good. I I don't
know if I ever told you guys this, but that's
like my uh my other dream job, right, Like, say, hey, Gottlieb,
you got two jobs. That's good? Got it? Wouldn't you
just love to be part of a creative that made commercials.
Speaker 5 (26:08):
I love it.
Speaker 1 (26:10):
I mean all of us sitting down there and go
like that actually would be fun. That's a fun job.
Speaker 5 (26:17):
And a well paying job. I think.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
Huh.
Speaker 5 (26:19):
I think it's a well paying job too well.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
I mean again, I don't. I don't know. Like obviously
you watch mad Men. That's what it was like back
in the in the sixties. I think it's a good
paying job. But just again, the ability to try and
be creative and sell a product and do fun stuff
like that sounds like a good idea. That sounds that
sounds fun. Gotta get me up in the morning. In
the meantime, sports, I've been doing okay with sports, so
(26:42):
I'm cool with that. Look, we got a big hour
for you, Daniel Jeremiah. This hour is that right? Oh God,
Dodger fans, you're just gonna You're just gonna have to
grin and Barrett. Plus we'll talk a lot of NFL
with with with DJ. But today is middle of the week.
It is middle of the show. Remember we have an
hour podcast when this show ends, it's called in the Bonus.
It'd be available top of next hour. Plus. You can

Show podcast or check out in the bonus. That's the
bonus hour only, but you can get the whole show.
Middle of the show, middle of the week, middle of
the day. Let's get to the midway. He's not getting
the middle with you. It's time for he's dug in
(27:27):
the middle.
Speaker 3 (27:29):
The midway.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
I want to thank Dan Byer because Dan Byer stopped
us from going down a path which would have been
really really hard in this heard in this show, which
is in the midway, we want to talk about the
best teams to not win a title. Okay, Now, Jay
Stu wanted to talk, of course, about the conversation with
(27:51):
the flawed MLB postseason format. That's because the Mets are
going to advance and the Dodgers are not, and so
he thinks it needs to be receded. But again that's
just that's a conversation and we can have it but
I like the we kind of all like the great
teams that did win a title, right.
Speaker 6 (28:08):
I was inspired by Bill Plachki's column today, Bill Plachki
Rise for the La Times.
Speaker 5 (28:14):
Love Bill.
Speaker 6 (28:14):
He wrote something that reminded me that Dodger fans feel
this way. He says, Dodger fans still waiting for their
first full season championship in thirty six years, and it
sounds like Bill thinks the way I do. I completely
dismissed the twenty twenty championship. That was a COVID late
tournament sprint win, and I don't think it's the championship.
(28:37):
I don't think most Dodger fans do. And it got
me to thinking, like, who have the best teams been
over the years to not win a championship? The Dodgers
are certainly falling into that category over the last ten
years thanks to Andrew Friedman. But I wanted to kind
of throw go around the room and see what you
(28:58):
guys thought the best teams to never win a title?
Speaker 1 (29:02):
Damn, I think this one's kind of easy. The best
team to not win a title in the NFL, it
was the New England Patriots that went undefeated, and that
was an unbelievable football team, you know, I mean go
back and look, and obviously everybody talks about Eli Manning
(29:24):
and the game they had and the you know, the
breakdown obviously in the offensive line, the was the NASCAR
pass rush. Was that what was called called the NASCAR
pass rush? I believe, right, And they were sixteen to
ZHO in two thousand and seven, that NFL that that
team was un believable, unbelievable. Go look at their offensive ranks. Okay,
(29:44):
number one yards, fewest turnovers first in tds first, and
passing yards first and touchdowns third, interceptions ninth, and uh
I think it was ninth in rushing touchdowns. But then
the defense defense was unbelievable to run a lot of
the fewest number of running rushing touchdowns. They were top
(30:05):
ten in just about every single category. It was really
really remarkable team. And it wasn't just that they won,
It's that they were crushing people's soul. Now, the Giants
came close to beating them at the end of the year.
The Jaguars almost beat them in the playoffs. They were competitive,
but I mean, this was a dynamic, dynamic football team
(30:28):
that ended up losing. And it wasn't like they lost
in the blowout. They lost it the David Tyree. In
order for the Giants to win, they need an absolute
miracle catch from David Tyree. When if we're on this,
Eli Manning probably in the grass, probably should have been
called down. That's the best football team I've seen, not
winn Super Bowl.
Speaker 7 (30:47):
You know what's funny, just another season doesn't have to
do with the topic. But remember their first regular season meeting,
and that's what the Giants said was their inspiration and
upsetting New England in that time. I remember having to
go to my aunt's house I was back home in
North central Wisconsin, to watch it because she had the
Dish network, sure, and they had the NFL network, and
(31:11):
I believe that that's where the game was on and
it wasn't gonna be direct Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:15):
So, and the only reason I saw it was I
worked at ESPN, and I think I had to go
in to watch it because I don't think it was
on I had the direct TV at the time, and
I thought it was only on Dish. I could be wrong.
I remember having to go into ESPN to watch it.
Speaker 5 (31:29):
Yeah it was.
Speaker 7 (31:29):
It wasn't the easy just turned it on and it
was on ABC that was an NFL network, and I
think they ended up laxing some of the rules just
for that game. But the Giants have always said that
was that competitive game that they lost by three helped
them fuel Then the upset to knockoff that you says
it's the greatest NFL team of all time to not win.
Speaker 5 (31:49):
A title wasn't worth.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
Those early NFL network games in non HD for the
longest time, those were the worst looking games. Do you
remember that, like most TVs, most of the America had
become HD, and for whatever reason, the NFL network will
slow to it. I'm sure the financial thing.
Speaker 1 (32:06):
I think it was. ESPNHD was the first one they
had like a year. I think that was. It was
like a year or two where they were like one
of the first ones. And and and actually ESPNHD was
like a different channel for a while there because people
didn't have HD. It's so crazy to watch games and
standard death and be like, how do we put up
with this for so long? Like what don't you put
(32:30):
up with? That's that's the best there was.
Speaker 5 (32:32):
Whatever happened? Edition Network, by the way, still there is it?
Speaker 1 (32:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (32:36):
A ouch?
Speaker 8 (32:37):
Sorrywork brough it we're a direct TV company here at FSR,
didn't know any better.
Speaker 5 (32:43):
Yeah, there's still around.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
I mean, go ahead.
Speaker 7 (32:46):
I was just gonna say, I think that the other
the almost given is the Golden State Warriors in fifteen
twenty sixteen season.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
Seventy three one two.
Speaker 5 (32:55):
Yep, yep.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
I have I have another another possible if you will.
Speaker 5 (33:01):
Can I give mine?
Speaker 1 (33:03):
Go ahead? You give yours?
Speaker 5 (33:03):
Ye? So I think this.
Speaker 6 (33:05):
Kind of follows on the line with what Dan was
saying with kind of the Warriors. But like, did you
guys know that the most the team that has tied
for the most wins in the history of baseball in
a single season is the two thousand and one Mariners
one hundred and sixteen, and they tied the Cubs from
(33:26):
nineteen oh six. The crazy thing about the Mariners team
in two thousand and one, it was each of Ro's
first season, he took the league by storm. But people
forget this fact the Mariners had traded or lost in
free agency Alex Rodriguez, Ken, Griffy Junior, and Randy Johnson
(33:46):
from the previous teams. This two thousand and one team
didn't have those Hall of famers on it, and it's
still won one hundred and sixteen games. I really do
think that when people think back to that team, they're like, oh,
they must have had Randy Johnson. No, no, he was
busy winning a title with the d Backs a rod
same way he was. Does he making money with the Rangers?
I want to say was just a little known fact.
Speaker 7 (34:07):
When did Brett boone evis? Was that two thousand and
one where he had his fifty home run season?
Speaker 6 (34:12):
He had a fifty home run season.
Speaker 5 (34:14):
Yes, I mean to the to the yes, but.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
Yes, yes, yes, yes, on both accounts. I'm almost positive
that Dan is correct, and yes you are. You are
very likely to be correct.
Speaker 5 (34:27):
Did Brett go to Villa Park?
Speaker 1 (34:29):
Uh? Yes, although he was he was younger, right, he
was the younger brother. So Bill Park is a high
school by the way, in in uh in the city
of Orange.
Speaker 7 (34:41):
It was thirty thirty seven home runs one and forty
one RBIs in two thousand and one finished in the.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
It was it was Mickey Tettleton that had fifty.
Speaker 5 (34:50):
Home pretty and well so that was the other one.
Speaker 1 (34:54):
It was Pretty Anderson. The one that said he had
fruit loops could be what was the secret? I had
fruit loops every day like slays for steroids? Is that
what they were?
Speaker 5 (35:02):
I think those Yeah, I don't know. I don't know
that story.
Speaker 1 (35:07):
I can't two thousand and five USC Trojans. That's the
team that lost to Texas. I want you to listen
to these scores. Sixty three seventeen against Hawaii, played Arkansas
seventy to seventeen. They beat him in the Coliseum, beat
Oregon with Kellen Clemens forty five thirteen on the road
in Audson beat Arizona, stay on the road thirty eight
(35:30):
twenty eight, forty two twenty one to beat Arizona, beat
Notre Dame by three thirty four thirty one. I believe
that was I'm not sure if that was the Bush
push year. Beat Washington fifty four fifty one twenty four,
beat Washington State fifty five thirteen, beat Stamford fifty one
twenty one. Was that the what's your deal?
Speaker 6 (35:48):
Bro?
Speaker 1 (35:49):
Game? I think it was at Cal thirty five to ten.
Cow was good at dudes scored fifty against President State
last game of the regular season. What one Reggie Bush
the heisman that he had they lost that he got
back sixty six nineteen over the number of eleven ranked
UCLA Bruins and then lost to Texas forty one thirty eight.
They were number one the entire season. They had won
(36:11):
back to back national titles and they could not and
I mean they just that roster was ridiculous, was ridiculous.
Speaker 7 (36:21):
And I would yes they were, and I would even argue,
and I don't know what would have happened in that
national championship game, but Texas obviously goes on and wins
it all. But Ohio State played Texas that year and
I don't want to say dominated, but they were the
better team for about three quarters of that game. Texas
started out great and they ended great, but it was
(36:44):
that Texas team is one because of Vince Young and
everything that went with it, and then beating USC. There's
so much lore behind it. But I don't even know
if Texas was the second best team in the country that.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
I actually agree with to get Like here's what people
were like. There was a time when Reggie was going
to get to get his heisman taken that they were like,
well you should give it to Well, why don't give
it to Vince Young. Vinjong was the best player in
the Rose Bowl, but he wasn't the best player all year.
And when people forget about that team that that Texas
team was, they didn't play it last game of the
year back to back games or you know, I believe
(37:18):
last game of the regular season was Texas played Texas
A and M and they won, like I'm looking up now,
forty to twenty nine and Vince played okay, And then
the very next game on ABC was USC UCLA and
Reggie Bush was like a superhero. You're like, this was
an easy call. You know, sure they beat by the
way they beat Colorado in the Big twelve championship game,
(37:38):
Texas did seventy to three.
Speaker 8 (37:40):
Remember that that helps Gary Barnett coaching the Colorado team.
Speaker 1 (37:45):
I believe, no, not no, Garybodnet. Yeah, that was that.
The Naida not only was she bad, but she was
a girl.
Speaker 5 (37:54):
I don't oh yeah it.
Speaker 1 (38:00):
Dudes have said before that. You're like, now, you're like
what They had a female kicker, Katie Naida, who later
came out and said that she was harassed and abused.
And when he she she did, Gary Barnett said, not
only was she bad, but she was a girl.
Speaker 5 (38:18):
I was that the direct quote.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
There's there's audio of it. Look it up.
Speaker 7 (38:25):
I know, I thought he was at his doorsteps saying
it as well, like the press came to his house
or something.
Speaker 5 (38:29):
I don't know, maybe it was something different. Can I
throw a couple of teams in there? Please do? This
is where Sam gives us four teams.
Speaker 8 (38:35):
No, No, here's one college football team in one NFL team.
I don't know if this was separated by a year,
but that I know that it was the five West
Virginia team with Pat White and Steve Slayton. They would
have played for a national seven.
Speaker 5 (38:50):
What was it? It was two thousand and seven, right,
it says Sam always eleven. The two thousand and five
West Jina team wins eleven and one.
Speaker 1 (39:02):
Yes, and then they lost up. They lost up, They
lost a pit in the backyard brawl. That was rich
Rod's last.
Speaker 8 (39:06):
Game, and then they beat in the two thousand and
six Sugar Bowl, they beat Georgia thirty eight thirty five.
But that was definitely a team that could have and
should have played for a national championship.
Speaker 1 (39:15):
Pat White was the quarterback that was back when rich
Rod was the Godfather. By the way, here's the here's
the quote. Okay, this is the direct quote.
Speaker 7 (39:22):
Here and while you read the direct quote, look up
the seven West Virginia team, because that's the one that
then rich Rod left.
Speaker 5 (39:29):
I thought, yes, and he was going to go to Alabama.
Speaker 7 (39:32):
Yeah, and they beat They beat uh with the inner
Oklahoma with the old Yeah.
Speaker 1 (39:38):
Be with the interim coach who became the head coach Steward. Yeah,
Bill Stewart, great guy, but not a good coach.
Speaker 5 (39:42):
But look up two thousand and seven when Doug does
that quote.
Speaker 1 (39:45):
Okay, here's one. It was obvious that Katie was not
very good. She was awful. Katie was not only a girl,
she was terrible. Okay, no other way to say it.
Speaker 5 (39:57):
I mean, you know what for her to go?
Speaker 1 (39:59):
I mean, like what it was, And it was a
response to she was she she was alleged that she
was raped. Like what? Okay, how what are you doing? Gary?
What are we doing? All Right?
Speaker 5 (40:13):
I got one more NFL team.
Speaker 6 (40:14):
I need to make a commentary before we get this
one in. So I need to so all those people
out there, all those snowflakes that are complaining that the
WNBA is getting mistreated and all this stuff they needed,
they need to read that quote that Doug just writ
and how much worse it was back then, because now
you're complaining about microaggressions and things that aren't tangible. People
(40:38):
were just blatant, misogynistic, blatantly politically incorrect back in the day.
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (40:47):
By the way, I have I have the actual answer
to this question. But but go ahead, go ahead, go ahead,
Sam Philibuster, all you want, Well, I have.
Speaker 8 (40:53):
This is a distant runner up to that Patriots team.
But how about the nineteen ninety eight Minnesota Vikings getting
oh so close to going to the NFL they want
to be the Super Bowl, but then losing.
Speaker 5 (41:04):
To the Falcon.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
No, they didn't go to Super Bowl.
Speaker 5 (41:06):
No, I know they Falcons went to the Super Bowl,
but they.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
Missed missed a field goal which Anderson was their kicker, Gary, Gary,
and Gary again, Sam, I think you might have been
a MEBA stage at that age.
Speaker 8 (41:18):
I was only about twelve, Yeah, but I wanted to
bring this up for you guys to sort of just
chew on a little bit.
Speaker 1 (41:24):
I can tell you exactly where I was when he
missed the kick. Gary Anderson hadn't missed the kick all year,
missed the one that sent him to the Super Bowl.
That was Rainy Moss al Reno cutting hand the rebirth
and the offensive coordinator was Brian Billick.
Speaker 7 (41:39):
I will also I will I will say this first
grade of a team that that was.
Speaker 5 (41:44):
I still don't know if they beat Denver in.
Speaker 1 (41:45):
The Super Bowl, probably not. Denver was so good.
Speaker 5 (41:49):
They were, they were really good.
Speaker 1 (41:51):
Can I answer what the actual answer to that question was, yes,
UNLB nineteen ninety nineteen ninety one.
Speaker 5 (41:58):
Yeah, they were.
Speaker 1 (41:59):
Defending that champions. They were thirty four to zero and
they lost to Duke in the semi finals. And again,
if you watch the game, there's a couple of different
things that you need to know. One, Teddy Valentine known
as TV Teddy, a terrible call to foul out Greg Anthony,
and their team changed dramatically when he left the game.
(42:21):
But also obviously what everybody wonders about is it looked
like and on the up and up, it looked like
they just lost to a team that had they had
beaten by thirty the year before, the year before, Bobby
Hurley was sick and they didn't have Grant Hill. But
surely thereafter there was pictures of a guy named Richard
the fixer Perry in Vegas in a hot tub with
(42:42):
a couple of the players. Just makes you wonder, right,
I mean, UNLV was so good that year, go and
look at what they did to people. It was. It
was amazing. Right, Here's what they did in the NCAA tournament.
They beat Montana by forty, They beat Georgetown by eight,
They beat Utah by seventeen. In the semi finals, they
beat Seaton Hall by twenty two, and they lost assuming
(43:05):
the regional final. They lost to Seaton Hall by twenty two,
beat Seaton Hall by by assuming Seaton Hall by twelve,
and they lost to Duke in the national semifinals. And
they only lost the year by two points. When they
lost the year, they were ranked number one in just
about every statistical and analytical category.
