having a great day. Yeah, Jared Smith's going to join
us some one about five minutes here. We'll get some
get some picks for the upcoming weekend. Plus we get
(00:44):
tonight's game. And I think it's really interesting. Uh Dan,
there's there's several different things at work all at once, right.
You have, you know, the Packers in third place in
the NFC North. We get the Lion they've had some injuries.
Their defense isn't great now, they've had some injuries. In
the defensive side of the ball as well, and you know,
(01:06):
the Packers have been better and Rick you're coming off
you know, arguably the best game of the season for
Jordan Love in terms of not turning the football over.
But now you have to go literally into the Lions Den,
not just figuratively, but literally into the Lions Den to
get a win, to get yourself back in position to
getting a home football game or two maybe maybe I
(01:27):
mean like there's outside chance of home field throughout. So
tonight's ad a really really big game for the entire NFC,
not just for the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Yeah, the glass half empty fan in me, if I'm
a Detroit Lions fan is saying this, you have to
keep winning because not only do you have to keep
winning to separate yourself from Philadelphia for home field advantage. Heck,
you need to separate yourself from Minnesota and the Screen
Bay team in the NFC North. So there's no there's
(01:59):
no necess necessarily room to falter right now, even though
they've got an opportunity with the Vikings coming up later
on in the season. It's also this factor, Doug is
I wouldn't doubt if we see green Bay and Detroit
play for a third time this season in the postseason,
and the superstitious part of me says, all right, Detroit,
(02:21):
if you win this game, you really think you could
beat Green Bay three times in a season, like what
you know is the third matchup, the one that really
really matters. They're on a ten game winning streak right now.
At some point that's going to end. I don't know
if it would be the worst thing in the world
for Detroit to lose this game, but there's just too
much at stake for them to lose that game because
(02:42):
of the Vikings and the Eagles and even these Packers
of being on their keels.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
Yeah, listen, I gotta tell you, I think I truly
believe that beating a team twice is really important and
getting ready for a third. I know there's this I
don't do you have the numbers. We got to get
the numbers for likely how often the team beats a
team a third time. But you know, if you beat
(03:08):
them twice, you just have that mentality of we can't
beat them. You know that team, we just can't. Everyone
has a rival, but you also have a nemesis. And
the Lions want to be the nemesis and remember like
they ended Aaron Rodgers Packers' career, like the Lions have
been the very recent nemesis, just like the Bears are
(03:30):
both the rival, but maybe now the Packers are more
the nemesis of the Bears. They just can't find a
way to beat them. Whether they're good whether bad, doesn't
matter who's starting a quarterback, they beat them. I think
you want that mentality of we never lose to this
Packers since you know, with Dan shul as our coach.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Yeah, and that could be it. I just was looking
at some numbers. Now some of these are dated in
a quick search online, but what you're saying, Doug is
actually more correct as of twenty twenty one, of the
eighteen times that you had that scenario, twelve times the
team won the first two games won the third game.
So the numbers aren't on my side for being Hey,
(04:09):
I don't know if you could be the team three times.
I just I just feel like Detroit at some point
is destined for a loss, especially with everything that they've
lost on their you know, on their squad. But guysch
the way the Eagles are playing and the way Minnesota's
playing and even the way Green Bay is playing, as
they said, you can't afford to. But I don't think
it would be the worst thing in the world for Detroit.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Yeah, I'm I'm fascinated by this Detroit team, who you know,
we've annoying it as the best team in the NFL.
And again, it's like, if you don't like Detroit and
you're okay saying that, it's like, Okay, who do you like?
Who has been more complete throughout this NFL season?
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Right?
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Like, forget record wise, I guess you could go Eagles
just because they can run it and they can throw it,
and you feel like they're pretty good at stopping it.
But the Lions right now are the team that people
are chasing. I'll be interested to see what happens because
of those defensive injuries. Stuck gotlab show here on Fox
Sports Radio. There's there's a lot of stuff. The b
(05:06):
enemy story is interesting. No no, no, no, no, no no no.

(05:47):
MGM Jared. Before we get to the college landscape, because
it's a obviously huge college weekend, let's get to tonight
Lions three and a half point favorites, totals fifty one
and a half. It's in Detroit.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Yeah, I think this is a huge game obviously for Detroit.
You guys mentioned it a little bit earlier with kind
of Minnesota nipenet the Heels. You don't see a team
playing this well with the Lions that still is in
danger of not winning their division, so we'll see what
they have tonight. Obviously, the first matchup, very low scoring game.
Green Bay really struggled in that game. Even though they
outgained Detroit picked six, they fell behind twenty four to
(06:22):
three and they just couldn't overcome that. I do think
their defense is a little bit healthier, but I'll be honest,
when you look at this Detroit defense, that's the key
is what are we going to get from this line's defense?
Down thirteen starters on the two deep, I mean they're
plucking veterans off practice squads.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
Left and right.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
This was the game last year where Jordan Love and
the Packers really found themselves and then all of a sudden,
it was a Thanksgiving game last year.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
I was actually one of the last games Detroit lost
at home.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
So we are starting to see I think, you know,
green Bay at their highest level, whereas Detroit maybe floundering
just a bit because of the defensive injuries. I think, oh,
I mean, this feels like a back and forth kind
of I would expect Ben Johnson to be in his
bag as he is most times, especially in the primetime spots,
and I know we didn't love what we saw at
the end of the game for the lines last week,
getting you know, the Bears back into it, but I
(07:11):
think offensively they'll be ready. This feels like over fifty
one and a nip and tuck game. Probably the spreads
right three and a half. I might favor Green Bay
at three. I would probably favorite Detroit.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
It's Doug Otlieb Show on Fox Sports Trader, that's Jared Smith.
These are Fox Sports Radio betting, and let's let's get
to these championship games this weekend. Let's start in the
Mountain West Conference. Who thought we'd be talking about the
potential for a buye coming from the Mountain West Conference.
I just we can get to what Vegas actually thinks
of these teams upcoming. But the Mountain West, of course
(07:45):
has the championship game and it is on Friday night,
un LV taking on Boise State, and the Broncos are
a four point favorite. They've previously beaten the ReBs, I
think in Vegas ein this year, yep, and the totals
fifty seven and a half.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Yeah, I was at that game. Actually it was late October.
Boise won by five. This bread was four, So you
kind of think about the number here right. Boise was
a four point road favorite about six weeks ago. Now
they're a four four and a half point home favor right.
This game will be played on the Blue Smurf turp
up there in Boise, so you might think that Boise
would have a little bit of an edge. But we've
(08:24):
obviously upgraded UNOV significantly, especially the game last week. When
Syracuse goes out and puts that big number on Miami,
you're like, oh wow, UNLV hung with Syracuse earlier this
year too, So this is a really good UNLV team.
And they held Ashton Genty in check. That was the
one thing I noticed, and I was fortunate enough to
be able to watch it in person. They really held
Genty down one hundred and twenty eight yards. I know
(08:45):
that sounds like a lot, but on thirty three carries,
it was his lowest output of the season against any
FBS opponent. And I don't think it's a coincidence that
this was the game where you started to see Ashton
Genty's production tail off a little bit.
Speaker 4 (08:59):
You could say the workload mattered a little bit.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Too, But I also think it's fair to say that
Barry Odom kind of gave other teams the script on
how to slow down Gent and this is gonna be
the third time that they faced him in a calendar year.
They played each other last year in the Mountain West
title game. Boise got the better of that matchup. Of course,
Taylor Green was a big part of it for Boise's offense.
He's not the quarterback this year. I would say downgrade
for Boise at quarterback with Maddox, But the key is
(09:23):
going to be play action. Everybody knows what's happening in
this game. It's a very simple script. You give the
ball to Ashton Gent, you run play action off of it.
Maddox the quarterback, had a huge game off play action
the last time these two teams played. So it's all
about can you shut down Gent enough and make just
a couple of plays when they do run the play
action to get Boise's offense off the field. For UNLV,
(09:45):
we love hodsma Leak Williams. We haven't talked a whole
lot about Matthew Lucas since that whole nil stuff. Malik
Williams has been fantastic, great in the running game. I
think Ricky White in the passing game will be huge.
He is the main receiver for this UNOV offense. I'm
gonna take the points here. UNLV has been close the
last matchup. I know they got blown out in the
title game last year. I think they keep this game
close on the smurf turf. I will take UNOB plus
(10:06):
four and a half.
Speaker 1 (10:07):
All right, let's get to the Big Twelve Championship game,
which now we get to those Saturday slates of college
football games where the Big Twelve, one of several of
the championship games. Big Twelve as Iowa State taking on
Arizona State. The Sun Devils are a two point favorite
and the totals forty nine and a half.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
How about that remarkable.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Arizona State picked sixteenth in the Big Twelve and one
hundred and one preseason odds to win it, and now
they're in the title game. Their win total before the
season of four and a half is the lowest of
any team playing on Championship weekend. I mean, they were
an underdog against Texas State this year like very early.
Obviously the market is caught up since they went ten
and two against the spread. Like this is really one
(10:51):
of the most remarkable campaigns in recent FBS memory. When
you consider what Arizona State was preseason, Kenny Dillingham deserves
a ton of credit. Who else deserves a ton of
credit is their offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo, because when you
look at Arizona State's offense, I think the sum doesn't
really equal to parts. Like they've got a couple of
really good players. I think defensively you could say the
(11:12):
same thing. But they play above the expectation and they're
gonna have to play even better because they're frankly their
best overall playmaker on the outside, Tyson the wide receivers
down in this game. So it's gonna be a lot
of Skataboo, It's gonna be a lot of Sam Levitt.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
But both of those guys have been fantastic this year.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
And the one thing that makes it even more impressive
for Marcus Arroyo's offense, despite having Skataboo, you know you're
gonna run it at a higher rate, he has had
a light box in sixty percent of his carry So
despite the fact that everyone knows Arizona State's gonna run it,
they're still getting very favorable looks because they spread things
out so well. So I think this is going to
be a fascinating chess match because Iowa State's defense doesn't
(11:48):
stop the run well, and their defensive coordinator, John Heccock
runs this three to three five which is designed to
stop the pass. But when you're facing a team with skataboo,
you've got to commit more bodies to the box. So
does Iowa stated justier? Did they put more bodies in
the box? Did they make it a passing game? For
Sam Lovett, I think this one's going to be the
more the Big twelve has been wide open all year.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
I feel like this game could go either way.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
I would lean Arizona State, but I don't know what
we're going to get with that offense without their best receiver.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
Entire Texas gets a rematch against Georgia Games in Atlanta
two and a half point Texas favorite and the totals
forty nine and a half.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Yeah, this was the only game of the Power for
conferences where we have a rematch, so we get a
data point to really chew into. Obviously, Georgia dominated one
by fifteen on the road. They were an underdog in
that game, actually the only game all year they've been
a dog, and we've seen a full adjustment a touchdown
adjustment in the total. It was fifty seven in the
last game. Now we're down to about fifty and Texas.
(12:44):
You know, it was really the only game all year
that they've been bodied. And the reason why Georgia. When
I went back and watched some of the film, Georgia
played a bear front, and what's a barfront? The eighty
five Bears made it famous when you play five defensive lineman.
But what made Kirby Smart's bear front unique is he.
Speaker 4 (13:00):
Out of Nickel.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
So instead of using an outside linebacker to play that
fifth defensive lineman spot, he used the safety and what
that allowed him to do in that first game is
play very strong against the Texas short passing game, which
is what they love to do. Quinn you weers about
sixty percent of his attempts this year are ten yards
and in so I thought, Kirby, how to sark adjust
to that? Do we see more deep passing game here?
(13:21):
Can they protect long enough against this Georgia d line,
which has been good at times? But I don't know
how much juice is going to be in this game, thug,
because frankly, both teams are in with a loss, and
I wouldn't be shocked if if we kind of get like,
you know, not the peak Georgia effort which we have
seen against Texas against Tennessee earlier this year. I wouldn't
be shocked if this game is kind of high scoring
(13:42):
and we get back and forth. And I don't see
why the touchdown adjustment on the total makes any sense.
These are both offenses the same, So I'll go over
forty nine and a half here with Georgia and Texas.
Speaker 1 (13:51):
All right, there's two more obviously, and they do have
some ramifications. Penn State's got one loss right now, they
be in. They take on Oregon, who'd be the number
one overall. See their Organs a three and a half
point favorite. The tolls fort nine a half.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Ted Johnson being back for Organs offense is huge. They're
a top ten offense with him. Essentially they're average without him.
And I think how Penn State, which if you look
at the counting stats, the defense is elite, but when
you go look at their data points against really quality opponents,
especially Ohio State, they just lined it up and smash
mount them. So I'm curious if Penn State can Abdul
(14:24):
Carter who's you know, adjusting. Is his first season with
his hand in the dirt as a defensive lineman, so
he's kind of played better as that adjustment has improved
for him throughout the season. On offense or Penn State,
can they run the ball? Singleton looked better last week.
I think that is key. They need him and Allen
to be stars. They couldn't run it against Ohio State.
It was obvious when they were passing it, because when
you can't run it on first down or second down,
(14:45):
you're in a lot of third and longs. And what
we seen from Drew Ala this year is he hangs out.
He's a little more conservative on those passing downs. But
they don't have really a downfield threat. So for Penn
State in this game, if you're watching and it's third
and eight, third, nine, third and ten consistently, they're probably
gonna get blown out. If they can run it, shorten
this game and keep their offense on the field for
long stretches, I think they've got a shot. And it's crazy,
I mean, as a Penn State alum, for them to
(15:06):
have a chance that the number one seed in this
bracket if they win, is an absolutely wild result. But
I guess that's kind of part for the course for
what college football has been this season.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
All right, And then let's get to the forgotten conference
of the ACC And what I think is the most
impactful game potentially is SMU taking on Clemson. And there's
a multitude of reasons. Clemson's nine to three fresh off
a home loss to South Carolina, SMU eleven to one,
and as of now has to buy in the College
Wall playoff. SMU's a two point favorite. The totals fifty
(15:34):
five and a half.
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Yeah, I for the record, I think if SMU loses
their out, I even if it's a one point game.
I just based on what we've seen from this committee
over the years, they love Alabama. I think they kind
of gave you the answer to the test the other
night when they put BAM in front of Miami, And
I think SMU has to win this game to be in.
But on the flip side of that, I don't think
(15:55):
they're being punished because they have to play in this game,
because if you think about it, this is an easier path.
Like imagine they didn't play this week and they had
to play a first round game at Ohio State at
Notre Dame at Penn State in the cold in two weeks.
The alternative is, you win this game on a neutral
and I know Clemson will have a big crowd in Charlotte,
but it's a neutral field and your favorite in the game,
(16:17):
and then you get a bye, and then you don't
have to play again until New Year's You get three
weeks off and you get to play that game on
a neutral. So this is an opportunity for SMU. I
don't consider it a punishment. This will be the best game,
or I should say, the best defense that they have
faced this year for SMU, and it's gonna be the
best offense also that they face. I mean it just
they have not faced a very elite caliber of opponents
(16:40):
this year. I think that's what this makes makes this
game a very high variance game. Like the best offense
SMU has faced this year is Louisville And on the
flip side, I don't even know what the best defenses
they face.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
They have not faced a lot.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
But for Clemson when they have managed up in class,
like the pit quarterback, the backup through for three to
fifty like Lenora Sellers was running wild on this team
last week. They couldn't stop the mobile quarterback, which Jennings
is for SMU. So I think there's a ton of
variants in this game. And because what you mentioned with
the urgency for SMU and obviously for Clemson because they're
out with the loss, this one is the one I
(17:12):
just want to sit back and watch and enjoy.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
I would lean SMU.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
The metrics say SMU under a field goal, but once
we get to three, I think that's where you're going
to see some Clemson money step in.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
So keep an eye late game tomorrow night.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
If this game does get to three, Clemson plus three
would be a bet that I think we would prefer.
Speaker 1 (17:28):

This is the best of the Don dot Lead Show
on Fox.
Speaker 1 (17:49):
Sports Radio, Stug Gott Lab Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
He's of course, the lead analyst for the NFL Draft
as an award winning podcast called Move the Sticks, and
he also is the color analyst for the LA Chargers
radio network. He's the one and only Daniel Jeremiah. He
(18:10):
joins us for his weekly visit here on the Doug
Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio DJ. Let's get with
tonight's game Detroit. You know, they lost Malcolm Rodriguez, who's
kind of heart and soul linebacker, right, just a tough,
rugged player, kind of fits what they do. Defense hasn't
been great, but obviously this is at times been the
(18:32):
best team, maybe throughout the season, the best team in
the NFL. What's the current status in your mind of
the Detroit Lions.
Speaker 6 (18:39):
Well, I think they're gonna have to rely a little
bit on the offense for a minute, you know why
they try and sort things out and replace some pieces here.
So you know, the good news for them is that
they have an offense capable of being pretty explosive and
pretty dynamic, especially on a short week. I know there's
been I've heard a lot of talk about well, you know,
Green Bay. You know they need it's more than Detroit. Detroit,
(19:02):
you know, could afford to drop one in Green Bay.
This is kind of desperation to stay in it here
inside the division. But I mean, the Vikings are just
one game behind the Lions. I don't think the Lions
take their foot off the gas by any stretch, so
Green Bays catching them at a right time in terms
of the health part of it. But I still, man,
it's a Thursday, you know, in that building. With their
(19:22):
speed on the offensive side of the ball, I still
think it's a it's going to be a heck of
a matchup.
Speaker 1 (19:28):
I do as as well. But can we hand talk
since last.
Speaker 6 (19:33):
Week Belichick thing?
Speaker 1 (19:33):
Please, Doug, Yeah, go ahead.
Speaker 2 (19:36):
I didn't know.
Speaker 6 (19:37):
I literally learned in the update about the Belichick thing.
When did this happen?
Speaker 1 (19:42):
Just been reported in the last couple hours?
Speaker 2 (19:45):
Okay, yeah, just yeah, And Daniel, just to give some
some background inside Carolina, the twenty four to seven Sports
affiliate had reported on Sunday that the sides had contract
contact between each other, but today they're reporting that an
interview has taken plays with Belichick in the school.
Speaker 6 (20:01):
Oh that's well, you know what I was thinking when
I just the first thought that came to my mind
was I think his son, Steve is coaching at Washington
under Jed Fish, who you know, and he had been
in the NFL with his dad.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
So yeah, I wouldn't surprise me if he tried to
do the I'll take the job for a couple of years.
If my son gets off when I'm when I'm done.
Speaker 6 (20:28):
Yeah, I'm pass it off to him. That's an interesting thought.
That was my first thought. The second thought was, you're
and you're in this world now, so I would just
love to know, like, if you're the you know, they
all recruit that area, right, So if you're if you're
a big time five star kid in North Carolina, South Carolina,
Georgia and you have your visits coming in, you know
your coach is coming in and you you go with
(20:51):
Dan Lanning and his energy. He comes in, Dabbo Sweeney
comes in with his energy, and then Bill Beepchick walks in.
Like that's got to be the most awkward transition from
personalities of all time than a recruiting trail.
Speaker 1 (21:05):
Yeah, he does put down on the desk six Super
Bowl rings, which no matter and and let's also be honest,
a big portion of it is not the energy of
the coaching staff. It's the number of zeros in the offer.
Speaker 6 (21:22):
That's just more of the economy than the energy.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Is that yeah, yeah, yeah yeah. I mean you can
sell a lot of things. He's NFL NFL, but a
lot of that that that sale. The interesting part though
to it is like I thought Jerry Jones nailed it
with with Deon Sanders. You know, the strength of Dion
is in his ability to recruit relate to people, and
he's more salesman, whereas and like for Belichick, that's he's
(21:48):
just better than the NFL because it's just about football,
just about football.
Speaker 6 (21:52):
The the other part too, that's the level playing field.
You know, give me the level playing field that I
can give you a schematic advantage.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
Now maybetic events and well here's the other thing. He's
also his bad GM and a lot of it is
about being a GM, you know, but you got to
you have to understand the landscape of what you're getting.
On the other hand, is a master head coach. But
my guess would be if he had any affinity for
doing it, it would be based upon getting his son
the job. What about it?
Speaker 6 (22:18):
What about the sab in side of it?
Speaker 2 (22:20):
Right?
Speaker 6 (22:20):
Because they were together and you know, it's kind of
an interesting dynamic when Saban was his defensive coordinator, and uh,
Saban goes off to college and and uh, you know,
labeled as the all time greatest coach, and those two
coaches are always kind of grouped together. As much as
Belichick and Tom Bradier group together, You've got Belichick and
Saban are group together. Won the best NFL coach, won
(22:42):
the best college coach. It would be kind of you know,
it would be a little one upmanship to you know,
And I'll go down to college and win a national
championship real quick, just to show how.
Speaker 1 (22:49):
I mean listen. I mean SMU is in the ACC
championship game and they have some money. Carolina has money.
I mean like, I actually have no doubt. If they
want to spend a HIGHO state level money in the ACC,
you win that league.
Speaker 6 (23:04):
Yeah, you know. No, You've got the jump man stuff
all behind you too. You've got some sizzle to sell
there as well as all the you do.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
You do have some sizzle to You have some sizzle
to sell. Let's let's get to some other some other
NFL issues. Daniel Jeremiah moved the Sticks as the podcast
NFL Network course you also hear them call l A
Chargers games. Okay, Brock Purty, what if you're if you're
the Niners, how are you approaching this offseason?
Speaker 6 (23:35):
I don't know, man, I'm I'm tempted to slow play it.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
You know, what is the what is the rush? Like
he's and who was it who joined us yesterday? Who
said who quoted Daniel Jeremiah and said tractor or trailer?
He's a trailer, not a tractor.
Speaker 6 (23:54):
Yeah, that's the analogy that we've we've used forever, you know,
is trying to identify which one of those you are,
and who's proper by the team and who can prop
up the team. And I think he's a He's a
middle to high end trailer, you know. So that would
look quite the same if the roster fell apart around
him because he's eaten up so much money. So yeah,
I'm not saying I want to kick him to the curb,
(24:17):
but I'd be a little a little reluctant at this
point in time to throw the number he's gonna want.
Speaker 1 (24:21):
Stut Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. I went
to the Packers game, and it's the second time I've
gone to a game with the Dolphins and been incredibly
underwhelmed by Tua. And this time it wasn't just the
arm strength. He can't move at all, DJ like you
know those the other when when he reloads like it's
(24:44):
not in basketball. And we talked about this to my team,
guys with dead feet. He does not, He's his feet
are not alive the way that remember Peyton Manning wasn't.
I mean, he's Peyton Manning raised the pregadant woman, came
in third, but in that pocket he had live feet,
like he just does not move particularly well. And then
I just I wonder if the Dolphins are regretting that contract.
(25:05):
I know they have other issues in that locker room.
I wonder how much that bothers them.
Speaker 6 (25:10):
Yeah, I would say still been. I mean, the difference
between him and everybody else they are playing with was
still pretty drastic. And they built the entire offense around him,
you know, for better or for worse, that's how they've
set it up. And you know, I think he's you know,
speaking of Peyton Manning, I think that team is the
most home field dependent offenses, maybe since the Colts. You know,
(25:34):
the Cults are just a different team outside of that building.
I think the Dolphins are a different offense outside of
their place. You know, it's just they are built for speed,
they're built for rhythm and timing, and they're built for
good weather. They're not built for Green Bay in November.
Speaker 1 (25:48):
No, They're They're not Or or Buffalo or Baltimore or Pittsburgh.
Speaker 6 (25:53):
Yeah, no question. I mean, I mean that's kind of
the way Indy was. Unfortunately, the inside their division didn't
have to deal with much of that. But you know,
you get into the playoffs and they were a different
looking team. If they didn't have home field advantage.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
I would I would agree with you. It's the Doug
Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, help me
out with the Chargers. They still haven't beaten anybody good,
but they haven't lost anybody bad.
Speaker 6 (26:19):
How good are they to signing good coaching? You know?
The way the way I put it is that every
time they've taken the field within you know, a near
equal talent situation, or even sometimes a little bit under
on the talent situation, they've won the games they've lost,
the other team just had better dudes, and they didn't
play quite as good. You know, outside of maybe the
(26:40):
Arizona game would be the only one, and that was
kind of a fluky game where Jalen Rager fumbles at
the one yard line going in and amongst other weird
things that happened. But they don't you know, they don't
give away games, they don't blow coverages. They are just
where they're supposed to be and kind of just sit
and wait for the team to to mess it up.
(27:01):
And last week Kirk Cousins was you know, he was
more than willing to do that with the four picks,
including the pick six that was the that was the ballgame.
So they're in every game. They're they're still missing I
would say, a handful of pieces to be a championship
level team. But I mean, Doug, they're going to make
the postseason and year one of this thing, which is
pretty impressive.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
Yeahs to Doug Gotlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio.
You know, I'm I'm really fascinated by the Dallas Cowboys.
You heard did you hear what Dak Prescott said yesterday? No,
it's kind of an interesting SoundBite, right he he definitely
stood by Mike McCarthy and he said something to the
(27:42):
effect of you know, I think he now he deserves
to keep coaching, but and I love playing for him,
but you know, make his own decisions. I feel like
it was Dak basically saying, hey, the defense is a disaster.
Mike Zimmer wasn't his choice. What are you hearing in
NFL's goes about what the Cowboys want to do?
Speaker 6 (28:02):
You know what's interesting is maybe for the first time
since I've been in the league, I think that the
cowboy fatigue that's you know, been in the media has
made its way throughout the whole league. They don't I mean,
this is probably the worst thing you can say about
a franchise. I'm on the phone every day talking to
friends around the league. They don't even come up in conversation.
(28:23):
You know, Like, that's probably the worst place you could
be if you want to talk about just being irrelevant.
They're not even a topic of conversation around the league
right now.
Speaker 1 (28:32):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio, Okay, c J.
Speaker 6 (28:36):
Stroud, that's a problem, by the way, Oh, I got it.
Speaker 1 (28:39):
I mean, just I don't know. If you saw Zach
Martin's got ankle surgery, there's talk that that could be
a career ender, by the way, So I mean.
Speaker 6 (28:47):
Even inside that division, like inside that division. Okay, obviously
Philly's playing as good as any team in the NFL.
That's that's that's noteworthy, and they are a championship caliber team.
Washington is going to be. They are on the ground floor.
This whole Jayden d Annuals thing, which is fun and exciting.
New York is kind of a dumpster fire. But there's
the intrigue of Okay, they can kind of they can
(29:08):
start fresh. They're they're done with Daniel Jones. Where do
they go from here? The Cowboys are saddled with some players,
They're not going anywhere. They don't have the coach figure, Like,
there's just nothing to get excited about.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
There nothing at all to be excited about. C J. Stroud.
What's happened him?
Speaker 6 (29:27):
Well, there's two things, and I think they're related. He's
getting hit way more this year than he did last year,
and they're not as explosive. They're not nearly as explosive
vertically in the passing game, so he's having to be
more you know, sustained drives playing you know, have to
play really really efficient for them to be you know,
to move the ball and score points. They're not getting
(29:49):
those big chunk plays. And one of the reasons not
getting the big chunk plays they can't hold up, you know,
they just can't. They are not protecting well enough for
them to push the ball down the field. And especially
for a young quarterback to have to nickel and dime
your way to points. You know, it's just it requires
so much to go right. And that's no knock on him.
He's in his second year, but that's that's too much
(30:10):
for him at this point in time to be able
to do that. Last year they were able to hit
some home runs, get some chunk plays, some three and
four play drives sprinkled in, and now it's everything is
just so hard.
Speaker 1 (30:22):
So hard, DJ, You're the best man. I can't wait
to hear the call of the game this weekend. Thanks
for our guest on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 6 (30:28):
All right, thanks buddy, We'll talk.

and uh we got to Cleveland State, the Vikings coming

about fifteen minutes. Then Jim Daniel Jeremiah will join us,
and God talks some bolts. Shall we some bolts, some
upcoming quarterback class and a huge NFL weekend including tonight
as the Packers take on the Lions. Packers take on
the Lions. We got to We've got a metric time
(31:46):
to get to and uh let's uh, let's let's get
after it. Ever we do this every Thursday. It's look,
we all have like fantasies, right, I mean, I want
to be a college basketball coach. I am one. I
I think Jason Stewart really wants to be in a
morning FM radio host, and he likes to start by
(32:09):
talking about sports, but usually devolves into other stuff. We
call it, don't call it a comeback Thursday.
Speaker 5 (32:18):
Don't call it a throwback throw back Thursday.
Speaker 7 (32:24):
Thank you, Doug. I'll take it from here. What is
it seventeen years? Has it already been seventeen years? My goodness,
as time flies, it's crazy, seventeen years ago this week.
Can you believe it's December already? It's incredible. Before you
know it, it's going to be twenty twenty five.
Speaker 1 (32:43):
I mean I just started writing twenty twenty four of
my checks.
Speaker 7 (32:45):
Hell, guys, Brett fav was in the midst of his
final season with the Packers two thousand and seven. Kind
of gets your mind in that time frame. Ky there
last season as a Packer. The Packers were ten to
one as they played the Lions on Thanksgiving. Brett fare
(33:07):
had one of the games of his career. He really did,
put up three hundred and eighty one yards three touchdowns.
Donald Driver caught ten passes for one hundred and forty
seven yards. Remember a running back named Ryan Grant had
one hundred yards on the ground. The Lions were led
by John Kittna that day, Old John Kittna. Rod Marinelli
(33:31):
was their head coach. They weren't very good. They were
about five hundred. But anyways, Brett Farr's final season, and
of course we all knew what happened at the end
of that season.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
Dan certainly does. Do you remember Dan at the end
of the two thousand and seven season, of course, yes,
that's when the Patriots were beaten by the Giants at
Super Bowl forty two. And those Giants.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Also the Metrodome collapsed.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
The roof Which one are you looking for? J in
the Metrodome? Are we looking for the Super Bowl?
Speaker 7 (34:02):
Kind of looking for the great at one of the
greatest upsets in the history of sports? But the Metrodome
is a close second before we get to roofs caving in.
I do those Giants they went into Lambeau on a
frigid day. I believe the Packers finished thirteen and three.
Speaker 2 (34:18):
Again, yes, yes, again, a game that happened in two
thousand and eight, but yes, go ahead.
Speaker 8 (34:24):
Really, oh yes, But don't we always describe the year
the two thousand and seven.
Speaker 2 (34:28):
Samm keeping the streak alive. I can't seem to get
this down.
Speaker 8 (34:31):
Yes, but that is the Giants team that went on
to upset that Patriots team, So I am I'm correct, right,
that is correct?
Speaker 2 (34:40):
Right?
Speaker 8 (34:41):
But remember the year It was a year before though
that the Packers were just terrible. Their running back was
Sam con Gatto.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
I do remember that, damn conto.
Speaker 2 (34:50):
I think they were like four and twelve, So that
eight and eight okay, oh, not as bad as I
must have my years off. That's hey, he said, only
sent a text two hours ago. It's right, it's a
prep for it.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
Anyway, was two thousand and seven again, I believe now
I understand it's a two thousand and six season, but
that was the Fiesta Bowl that had Boise beating Oklahoma
in overtime, which had a succession of craziness and trick
plays that we may never see again, and had the
(35:25):
hook and Lateral or hook and latter as people call it,
and the Statue of Liberty, and then it had uh,
what's it was? Chris? Is it Chris Bourn? What's his name?
Speaker 2 (35:38):
He used to work with Chris Myers.
Speaker 1 (35:39):
Chris Myers completely butchered the running back asking his cheerleader
girlfriend's hand in marriage. So he goes, I know you're
going to ask her to marry you? Like at that
ruins the surprise you had?
Speaker 4 (35:52):
Dope?
Speaker 2 (35:54):
Sorry, anyway, that was.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
That was two thousand and seven.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
Correct, Yes, it was. Jenny were a first of two
thousand and seven.
Speaker 1 (36:01):
And I'll bet at that point in time they're like,
is it two thousand and seven?
Speaker 2 (36:04):
On Ian Johnson was the running back?
Speaker 1 (36:06):
And yeah, was he still married? Good question?
Speaker 2 (36:10):
Yeah, yeah, I think they are, because I think there
was a piece done about them recently. Forty three to
forty two.
Speaker 8 (36:15):
I think that's the best bowl game I've ever seen,
just with all the just the kind of the underdog
taking on the heavyweight and then just all the crazy plays,
this scoring.
Speaker 1 (36:26):
I saw the best bowl game you.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
Were saying, I think it is, in my opinion, you
didn't see.
Speaker 1 (36:29):
Did you see USC Texas for the National Championship game?
That was a bowl game?
Speaker 2 (36:32):
Yeah? I just think that that was a better game.
Wasn't worth his mind? I think in defense of what
Iowa Sam is saying, it's the underdog portion of what
Boise State represented at that time, all right, and and
the way and you remember the fourth thounds that they converted.
It just wasn't the statue of liberty that the hook
and hookan ladder that they ran during that game as well.
Not one of the better Oklahoma teams, but still a
(36:55):
team that was good enough to play in a Fiesta
Bowl for sure.
Speaker 1 (36:57):
Was that Bomar team was right? Bomar the quarterback there.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
You know, I can't remember exactly it was an Adrian Peterson, yeah,
because he was the rookie of the year. Then in
two thousand and seven, for the NFL portion of this conversation.
Speaker 8 (37:14):
Jared Zebranski was the quarterback of the Broncos. For there
it was Dan Hawkins?
Speaker 2 (37:18):
Was it? Dan Hawkins was a quarterback?
Speaker 8 (37:20):
It's the big question of the Division one football.
Speaker 2 (37:24):
Two thousand and seven was a good year for Ohio State.
The problem was it was a great year for the
University of Florida because not only in Florida then beat
them a week later Florida Gate in Glendale, Arizona for
the National championship. But it was also then in the
two thousand and seven Final Four in Atlanta that the
(37:45):
Gators went back to back by beating Greg Godin and
Mike Conley and Thad Mata in the National Championship game.
So that was prime Florida Gator territory in terms of
college football and college basketball. They basically did the double.
They did the back to back by winning the football
in the two thousand and seven year, because that game
(38:08):
did happen in January and then three months later in
early April in Atlanta cut down the nets for the
second straight.
Speaker 7 (38:14):
Year, Doug, Doug, what if somebody would have said to
you after that championship game? In seventeen years, Michael Connolly
will be a thriving NBA player having signed a couple
Max deals, and Greg Odin will not be a very
good pro because of injuries.
Speaker 1 (38:35):
I mean, at the time, I obviously would have said
you're crazy, But I also like knowing the history of
the sport, there have been plenty of big guys that
their just bodies let them down. To be to be
totally fair, right, to be totally fair.
Speaker 8 (38:48):
This from Ryan Berschinger, Thank you, Ryan. Running Back Sam
con Gotto is a doctor now, which is pretty cool.
Speaker 1 (38:54):
Good for him, doctor, pro football doctor Gotto, Sam con Gotto,
what a name football, pro football player.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
For a minute two thousand and seven, I used to
travel a lot for Fox Sports Radio, and I traveled
a lot in two thousand and seven.
Speaker 1 (39:13):
If we get a playing a pivot foot there, Dan.
Speaker 2 (39:16):
I'm sorry. I was just going to keep the segment moving.
You know. It was kind of a humble bragge you
traveled a lot for work?
Speaker 1 (39:22):
Yep, Yeah, yeah, Actually that was back when we had
a lot of money to throw around. That's what That's
what you're saying.
Speaker 2 (39:27):
So in two thousand and seven, Yes, I saw the
Spurs sweep the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, the bronze
first appearance in the NBA Finals. They were swept in
four games. Because you weren't sure if the series was
going to be extended to a game five or not.
(39:48):
We had to wait for travel because the game was
on Thursday night. I took in the two thousand and
seven US Open that year, drove from Cleveland down to
Pittsburgh at Oakmont a year that on Hell Cabrera ended
up winning, breaking through holding off Jim Furick and Tiger
Woods and others to win the US Open that year.
And I'm surprised Iowa Sam did bring this up. Zach
(40:08):
Johnson won the Masters in O seven. Yes, Tiger Woods
won the PGA that year at Southern Hills Doug in
Tulsa in the Open.
Speaker 1 (40:18):
The water in the greens that year.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
Was, yeah, it was super hot. It was super hot.
But it's also a spot where you saw Tiger show
signs of maybe that knee wasn't great, kind of celebrated
on the eighth I think it was the eighteenth toll
and his knee kind of gave. But he won the
two thousand and seven PGA Championship that year. Sergio Garcia
was also close to winning the Open Championship at Carnousti
(40:41):
missed a putt at the end and then lost in
a playoff to Padrig Harrington.
Speaker 1 (40:44):
So that was that was also Austin Red Sox really
made it baseball boring, right because in four they overcame
the curse of the Bambino. And then I think it
was sixth that the White Sox won. So that five
five right, So the very next year, so eighty eight
game eighty eight year, right, that.
Speaker 2 (41:03):
Was it over the Astros White Sox was five, yes.
Speaker 1 (41:08):
Yeah, and so o seven the Red Sox won again.
They swept the Colorado Rockies four games and none. That
was Jonathan papelbon an incredibly unlikable human being. As a closer,
he was just one of those guys who like people
felt about him the way they feel about Eagles fans, right, like, yeah,
I know he's good, but god, I don't like him. Right.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
Matt Holliday played in that world Hurt Now It swept.
Speaker 1 (41:32):
Never touched home plate in the and that was the NLCS.
Was that the DS They didn't touch home plate?
Speaker 2 (41:39):
Oh that's right, Yeah, I forgot. That's a good one.
Speaker 1 (41:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (41:44):
By the way, earlier that year, Prince Prince endured reign
literally and figuratively.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
He had to reign in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (41:55):
Oh, that was incredible.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Known as one of the best performances ever.
Speaker 1 (41:58):
I think it was. I mean, it's in my life
time right.
Speaker 7 (42:04):
And one act in that one act that would eventually
play in the Super Bowl. If I'm not mistaken. I
think she has had the best song of the year
and it went something like this And I'm not familiar
with this song. Maybe maybe Dan and Sam knowses you
(42:27):
know who this is, Doug.
Speaker 1 (42:29):
I believe that's Beyonce.
Speaker 7 (42:32):
Song of the Year, Irreplaceable off her second studio album,
B Day.
Speaker 1 (42:40):
This is This is actually, what what this segments all about?
Speaker 2 (42:42):
People?
Speaker 1 (42:42):
I hope everybody understands, like we do this worst singing
and this is where Jaced wants to show off.
Speaker 7 (42:50):
She went on to have a pretty good career. It
was also the year that the iPhone debuted. Our lives
collectively as a planet has that has never been the
same since the iPhone debuted.
Speaker 2 (43:03):
I can raise my hand in and iPhone.
Speaker 1 (43:06):
I just love my love, my BlackBerry love. Uh.
Speaker 2 (43:10):
Seven was raising his hand?
Speaker 1 (43:12):
O seven was Best Picture? Was The Departed?
Speaker 2 (43:16):
Probably my favorite movie of all time?
Speaker 4 (43:18):
Really?
Speaker 2 (43:19):
No? Wait? Was it seven? It came out in six though,
didn't it? Did it win an O seven picture?
Speaker 1 (43:24):
Seven?
Speaker 2 (43:24):
Best Picture?
Speaker 3 (43:25):
No?
Speaker 2 (43:25):
Seven? Yes, you're right? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (43:26):
Was the Department Departed?
Speaker 2 (43:27):
Yeah? My movie of all time.
Speaker 8 (43:29):
It's my favorite movie, the movie of all time. You
would say what, I would argue that it wasn't even
the best Scorsese movie. I think, well, it's the only
movie of his it's ever won Best Picture. He'd been
snubbed time and time again.
Speaker 7 (43:42):
Goodfellas like known better as a better movie.
Speaker 8 (43:46):
I think that Departed because I just love the Irish
mob element of it. I think the acting is fantastic,
the story is really well done. It's my favorite movie.
I think I put it at number one of all.
Speaker 1 (43:56):
He did say his favorite movie of all time, just
my favorite, the best or my everyone's favorite. He said
it was his favorite, which again none of us actually
pilled Sam's opinion, but it is his opinion.
Speaker 4 (44:08):
Two pills.
Speaker 7 (44:09):
Speaking of movies, Doug, it was the summer of Apaito.
Knocked Up was a huge hit with Catherine Heigel and
Seth Rogan, followed by likes her.
Speaker 1 (44:20):
Huh, she's the Jonathan Paplebon of Grey's Anatomy.
Speaker 2 (44:28):
Yeah, it's totally true. Well, the truth came out seemingly
that career went down.
Speaker 1 (44:38):
Absolutely, she was a She's like an eight that thought
she was a ten, you know, whereas you really wanted
ten that thinks she's an eight, or even an eight
that thinks she's a five or six. Yeah, she was
an eight.
Speaker 7 (44:51):
That she That's actually a real good analogy. Apato also
came out with Super Bad later that summer, massive hit calm.
Speaker 8 (45:01):
He's a good he's he's good at what he does
is his comedies are just too long. They're always too long.
They meander. A good comedy should always be ninety minutes.
And his were like far beyond that completely.
Speaker 1 (45:12):
Here's here's what I'm saying. The hardest. The two hardest
genres of movie to make, I believe are comedies and
sports movies. I agree comedies in sports movies. Comedies because
like it's just hard to be funny for that long.
Speaker 2 (45:27):
Right you know the stick, Where's out after ninety minutes?
Speaker 1 (45:30):
And then the other part too, It is sports are
hard because like you got to paint such a really
good picture, but then if the actual sports scenes are bad,
it really takes away from the movie.
Speaker 2 (45:42):
It's gonna be realistic, authentic.
Speaker 1 (45:44):
Yeah, what was the other? What was the other?
Speaker 2 (45:50):
Music?
Speaker 1 (45:50):
We got music? We got movies? Oh? I know, I know.
This was also back in the TV viewing era, is
back when people used to watch TV shows. What was
the hottest TV show in two thousand and seven?
Speaker 7 (46:09):
Well, I've got a list, But are you going for
a specific show?
Speaker 1 (46:14):
Well I had one in mind, but go ahead, I
mean you want your on your list.
Speaker 7 (46:20):
For American Idol and Big Bang Theory are all over
these most watched shows. Sure, I try to look for
the show that made its debut?
Speaker 1 (46:28):
Did did Breaking Bad make its debut? In O seven?
Speaker 4 (46:31):
I think it was eight.
Speaker 2 (46:32):
I think it started in eight eight pretty sure was
it was lost still a big thing.
Speaker 1 (46:37):
In O seven mad Men mad Men was oh seven,
mad Men was, oh seven.
Speaker 2 (46:44):
Great show.
Speaker 1 (46:45):
I love mad Man.
Speaker 2 (46:46):
Dan, you watch mad Men? No, I have not.
Speaker 4 (46:49):
I would.
Speaker 1 (46:50):
I think you'd really like it, Dan, I just do.
I really like mad Men, really like Madmen. So we've
gotten movies, we've gotten TV shows, we've gotten a little
bit of music with Beyonce. We've gotten college do we
we did college basketball. We did a little college football.
(47:14):
