Not a lot going on, right or maybe there is,
you know, like the Tennessee Titans get their first win
of the year. Mason Rudolph, who came in and saved
the day for the Titans, will join us in the show.
By the way, I have a question for you, Dan,
you and Jay Stu. You guys are both very active
on social media. I was Sam as well, right, Like,
that's that's fair, that's not everybody good with that? Okay?
(01:09):
Did you see the post of a young woman and
her guy and they're at the Dolphins game and she
shows him that that Mason Rudolph slid into her DMS.
Yes I did, and he's and the guy is like,
guys like, Mason Rudolph slides into my girls DMS. Now
(01:30):
he's on the field and he's beating the Dolphins. But like,
I can't. This is the worst ever. I want to
go home right now? It's it, right, Okay? Should I
ask Mason about it?
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Well? I think you have to.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Well, I mean it's off the field. It doesn't have
to do totally. I mean I'd like to, and we
are friends, but like, is this gonna kill our friendship?
Speaker 3 (01:52):
If I asked, well, I wouldn't worry about the friendship.
I'd worried about the listener and what the listener wants
to to know, and I'd want to know that information.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Okay, jay Stu, are you okay with that? I mean,
I'll go with it, but I just want to make
sure that we're all on board for the possibility of it.
I mean Jayce dou of course, used to be with
with with Rome's posse, and right Rome made a name
for himself by calling Jim Everett Chris Everett several times
and then getting the desk turned over on him. I
don't think Mason would have that kind of native energy.
And I got to find like a nice neutral way
(02:22):
of asking him. But I got to ask him about it, right,
Jace du Can, I I can't give him a pack.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
I think we got to And could you guys clarify
something for me, because I saw the tweet many times.
I just didn't I didn't actually spend any time looking
at it.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Did it? Did she divulge what he wrote to her? No?
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Oh no, no, there was no There was nothing there.
It looked like it was unopened by the way.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
There was.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
There was some there was some drama on whether it
was a screenshot, whether it was an actual the actual
app being shown. The question or the message was are
you still in Miami? That's what was allegedly sent to
the message, Whether it's real or not.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
You're still in Miami? All right, We'll we'll find out,
We'll ask. I will ask Mason Rudolf, he'll join us,
He'll join us upcoming, man. I mean, she blew up
his spot on Twitter when he's playing in the game.
That's called blowing up your spot. By the way, I
don't know if you guys are familiar with that. Mason's
joining us in twenty five minutes. It is the Doug
(03:25):
Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Quick Welcome into
k n e W. That's k NEW, our new affiliate
in San Francisco. It's nine to sixty AM. iHeart sports
talk and more. Don Parker, thanks for making the ill
fated decision of having us on. But West Coast guys,
regardless of where we are doing a national show, we
appreciate you. We appreciate you. Can I get to the
(03:48):
Pete Rose thing. So Pete Rose passed away last night,
and again I haven't polled my staff. I haven't asked
j Steube, although I fall him on social media, so
I do know. I did see Dan tweet about it.
So again, Dan, if this goes counter to your opinion,
we can we can.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
Talk about it.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
But what actually has changed between yesterday and today? Right?
Speaker 5 (04:15):
I mean?
Speaker 1 (04:15):
P Rose isn't of this earth anymore? But had any
of you who spent any time thinking about Pete Rose
before now?
Speaker 5 (04:21):
Like?
Speaker 1 (04:21):
No, So this newfound push and this always happens, right
and frankly, like this is there's I don't think Reggie
Bush's is to this point. But like Reggie Bush was
taking money, got caught taking money, and now because you
can take money, they gave him back his Heisman trophy
(04:42):
and we acted like none of it ever happened. And
Reggie Bush acts like he's a victim when he's he's
not right. The one thing is, yes, did it steer
players or keep players at schools because you paid them? Sure,
but the actual game itself there wasn't the same. It
didn't strike you the core of what the game with
(05:04):
the sports is about. And suddenly now Pete Rose becomes
some sort of sympathetic figure because he passes away, and like, oh,
how could the whole time hit king, the all time
game player king, How could Peter Rose, seventeen time All Star?
How could he not be and recognized in the Hall
(05:25):
of Fame. Well, first thing is he actually is recognized.
His accomplishments are recognized in the Hall of Fame. His
bats there, gloves, their shoes there. Okay, And I'm not
even factoring in some of the creepy off the field
stuff like don't care. I'm not using that to talk
about whether or not Pete Rose should be in or
shouldn't be in. But I started in this national sports
(05:46):
radio game with a man named Chuck Wilson. Chuck normally
would join us. We get him for an hour, and
he is a Pete Rose fan who is the foremost
authority on the Doubt report and on all Pete Rose did.
He can join us because his father in law is very,
very sick and he's holding his wife's hand and he
(06:08):
was It's just that's it's not something he wants to
disrupt in terms of his family. But what I did
learn from him, going back again, I've been doing this
for twenty two years. Of the twenty two years, nationally,
anytime Pete Rose comes up, there'll be something to go. Well,
they just put him in. What's the point of having punishments?
(06:28):
What's the one time punishments? And oh yeah, by the way,
the way in which you get a punishment lessoned in
the court of law is what admit fault, admit guilt.
He just admitted and will cut it down. And you know,
Pete Rose never did. He never admitted it. Not only
he never admitted, but he wouldn't even admit to when
he began betting on baseball Hipete's thing was like, I
(06:52):
only bet on games we're going to for us to win. Okay, Pete,
you do understand that if you call a bookie twice
a week and say and bet on your team to win,
and then you don't call your bookie, doesn't that mean
you think you're gonna lose? Right? And oh yeah, by
the way, he started betting on baseball, not just as
(07:12):
a manager, a player manager, so he could directly affect
all of those games, and even the ones he didn't
bet on, he could directly affect the other part too.
It is you can load up your quality pitchers for
those games that you bet on and essentially throw the
other ones without throwing them. Piro is a great player,
(07:34):
all time great and the way in which he played
the sport is the way in which you want anybody
to play the sport. But when you violate the core
tenants of what sports is about, specifically baseball, where a
rule that was posted on every clubhouse wall, and then
you deny, deny, deny, may make yourself out to be
(07:55):
the victim. Okay, then you do all kinds of things
like I'm gonna sell autographs right across the street, Hall
of Fame, like Pete, He's not a great dude. He
just wasn't. Let's not make him into some sympathetic figure.
He was a great ballplayer that committed a crime against
the sport of baseball. The punishment that they chose that
(08:15):
everybody agreed with was a lifetime ban. That band could
have been lifted several times over had he at any
at any point, at any point acknowledged what he had done,
admitted it, talked about it, and tried to tell others
not to fall into the trappings of betting on professional sports,
especially the one in which you play. He chose not
(08:37):
to do so. So the payment is just like when
you're like, hey, I'm going to fight this ticket.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
If you fight that.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Ticket, have you ever been in a traffic court but
you go in and they call your name and like hey,
look a hundred bucks. It goes away like, well, you
fight the ticket, and what happens. I don't know if
anybody had been in a traffic court recently. I have
there's cameras everywhere. He did not run that red light,
and like, mister gotlieb, this is your car, you ran
(09:06):
the red light. Any know what happens because of their
time because of what they had to do. They're going
to punish you to the complete extent of the law.
They're like, okay, now it's a three hundred and fifty
dollars ticket.
Speaker 5 (09:17):
Like that.
Speaker 1 (09:18):
You know you could have go He could have walked
away with a hundred, but you chose not to do.
So let's not make that Pete out to be anything
more than an incredible player who played for a long time,
who played baseball the right way, except for the one
thing he gambled on baseball, and then he lied about it.
(09:40):
He claimed to never know when his first bet was
because if he did, he would say, which is in
the doubt report, that he started betting on baseball when
he was a player manager. In other words, he was
still playing. So let's not act like he didn't have
his hands on a baseball to make a play that
could help or hurt his team. Just not that way.
I feel zero sympathy for him individually personally being recognized
(10:03):
in the in the Baseball Hall of Fame. None, and
you shouldn't either, And don't believe these people that haven't
done their homework. That's simply all they want to do
is grandstand and get people on social media or media
to act like there's some hero championing the week. That's
not who Pete Rose was. Per Ros did come from
(10:23):
nothing and built him built himself into an absolute legendary
baseball player. But he's kind of a slam ball. Let's
just be totally candidate, honest, and if that, if that
bothers you, fine, go and just track his history all
the things he's done, and you're like, yeah, maybe not
the best guy they want.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Now.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Again, that doesn't keep you out of the Pro Baseball
Hall of Fame. There's plenty of Hall of famers that
aren't good dudes. But he bet on baseball repeatedly as
the player manager, What do you want to do with that?
And then never came clean, never admitted to when he
did it. You know, has had opportunity after opportunity after
(11:08):
opportunity to acquiesce to what baseball has asked him to
do in order to in order to get reinstated. He
made the calculated guess, hey, that public pressure would be
on his side, and probably was, but also that he
would be more popular, probably make more money as the
anti Hall of Fame Hall of Famer than he would
(11:30):
by saying I admitted I'd been.
Speaker 6 (11:32):

Speaker 1 (11:42):
It's Doug Gotliebshell here on Fox Sports Radio and uh,
light work from a boy. Mason Rudolph right comes in
off the bench another dub, just like last year with
the Steelers, helping lead them to the playoffs. He joins
us now on Fox Sports Radio. Mason, how are.
Speaker 5 (11:57):
You doing great? Doug? How you doing?
Speaker 1 (12:00):
I'm good, man, I'm good. What was that like last night?
Here you're on the sideline you see will go down?
Speaker 5 (12:07):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (12:07):
What what is that like? As the backup quarterback? A
role that you've you've played before, obviously been the start,
you've been the backup. What's it like when you're one
concern for a guy that you share the quarterback room with,
but you also got to get ready to go.
Speaker 5 (12:21):
Yeah, it's it's uh, it'll spike the adrenaline levels pretty quickly.
I uh yeah, obviously, like you said, we'll tweak you
shoulder some sort of an ac uh irritation, and so
he's sort of moving around and you, you know, you
don't know if it's something he's gonna be able to
kind of play with or work for. Like you said,
(12:43):
you're you're going to get out there and play, So
he ended up not being able to go and you
kind of getting that zone talk about you know, play
play options or the next of the following drive, the
upcoming drive, and uh, get you a couple of get
you a couple of throws and get warm and jump
in there. So that's kind of how it goes.
Speaker 1 (13:01):
But what what is what is that like? Right, it's
your first time wearing a different uniform in a real
NFL game, fresh off of playing and starting for the
Steelers in the playoffs, going to last year. What's that
feeling like trotting trotting out in the field for the
first time as the Titans quarterback during the regular season.
Speaker 5 (13:15):
Yeah, it felt great. I mean I I felt prepared. Uh,
I felt like That's part of the best staff I've
been a part of as far as just you know, offensively,
just the offensive minded head coach, the attended of detail
in the installation each week, the situational like we drill
(13:35):
situations two minute and a half to win the game.
It's just like to death, and so uh felt prepared,
even though you know you're obviously not getting the reps
during the week, but I try to stay sharp. And
there were that call sheet, so sure, you know mentally
up to speed?
Speaker 1 (13:52):
How do you not you know the calls and the
the the verbiage, you know is obvious. See difference a
different football family. It's you know, Holtz wasn't he was
last year in Jacksonville and with the Raiders before, so
it's not like he was in Pittsburgh. So it reminds me.
It's got to remind me of I remember when I
was in Russia. I learned to speak Russian, but occasionally
(14:13):
I would be speaking Russian and a Spanish word would
pop in and like, no, no, wait, it's not Spanish.
It's right, there are different languages. Do you catch yourself
with the verbiage change kind of when you're called, when
you're audibilizing or thinking thinking of what you're looking for.
Speaker 5 (14:27):
Yes, So actually Callahan, Brian Callahan, the head coach, he
called the plays. He even though coordinator Nicoles that you
references coordinator on paper. But so yeah, quite quite a
lot of you know, new verbiage, longer play calls, you
know that I was used to in Pitt but you know,
(14:50):
I've had I've had training camp reps and in preseason
game reps, and so I felt pretty dar uncomfortable. And
but yeah, there's there are times where you know, uh,
you sort of you know, uh moments where you're, hey,
this is what we call this, right, And he's kind
of getting in there and double checking, double checking things,
especially with the center that you know, I hadn't worked
(15:10):
with a whole lot through training camp, you know, under
center sort of chemistry and and and and verbal cadence
and so, but we figured that out pretty quickly.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
What what is the kind of Callahan seeker?
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Right?
Speaker 1 (15:22):
Because obviously his dad's like, I mean, he was head
coach of the Raiders who went to Super Bowl, but
he's an offensive line guru and savant, and of course
his son's like chip off the old block. Like you
mentioned attention to detail, Like, what is it specifically that's
allowed that family to be so well respected on the
offensive side of the ball.
Speaker 5 (15:41):
Yeah, I think I think I was talking to you know,
his nickname is wild Bill Calhoun, you know, the senior
uh Bill, and and he is just I mean, he's
sixty eight years old, and he is as sharp as
attack and when he when he when he installed the
run plan each week, it's uh, I mean it's it's
it's sort of a it's like as and l bit
(16:03):
it's so it's enjoyable. He's he's he's humorous, he's sarcastic,
and the guys are locked in and listening to him.
And but we we had a heck of a lot
of personnel groups. I mean, it's it's a complex plan,
a lot. You know, there's a lot of times in
the huddle what you're calling, you know, one one run play,
can you know, you know, alert to another run play
in case, you know, basically the look we get. So
(16:25):
he's detailed in there, and that's why the studying during
the week is so vital.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
It's interesting though, right because like I'm sitting at home
and I'm like, you know, they're running power, you know,
like man let me of course, I'm like, let my
man throw the ball. But the second, the second part
is you're sitting there going like, okay, this to the
layman appears very very simple, just running the football, but
the reality is it's super super complex.
Speaker 5 (16:50):
It is it is, And yeah, I knew that was
going to be the game sort of the game plan
going in, Like, you know, they got a quarterback who's
freaking been a part of their reme for ten days,
so it's reasonable to expect. And you know, anyone, I
don't care if you're you know, I don't know make
manning to go in there if you're not going to
be as effective as you're just so new. And so
(17:11):
when we got there, you know, the early lead, we
knew the control of the ball, you know, run it,
running it well, shot on the clock. It was going
to be important. But but you're right, it's uh. I mean,
most of the time you're breaking at with two plays
and you got emotion, a shift and then another speed
motion most likely, and and there's just a lot of
(17:33):
moving parts and the average fan, like I said, would
wouldn't realize that.
Speaker 1 (17:36):
Did you see what happened on social media with the
guy and his girlfriend?
Speaker 5 (17:43):
Yeah? I did, No, I did. I had that sent
to me a few times that was playing No, this
is this was a I was responding actually to Ah,
whoever the girl was, it's had sent a few messages
my way. I believe he was a Steelers fan, and
so I was responding back, but you know, water under
(18:04):
the bridge. It's it's all, uh, it's hilarious.
Speaker 1 (18:08):
Come on, dude, it's hilarious. Right, Like she's saying, like
he slid into my DMS, which is not an accurate way,
and he's like, and we're losing and we suck. I
just want to go home now, and you know, and
then of course, yeah, like it to add insult to injury.
It wasn't just that the Titans were beating his beloved Dolphins,
but that you checked in the game and then you're
responsible for beating the Dolphins like that was that was
(18:29):
a kind of amazing thing to sit here as a
bread and watch.
Speaker 5 (18:33):
Yeah, no, but it was.
Speaker 1 (18:35):
It wasn't an unsolicited slide into her DMS. We want
to make sure that's clear it again, it was not
an unsolicited slide in.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
It was It was a.
Speaker 7 (18:45):
It was a it was a response, and it was
about eight months ago. It was definitely not in between
the second down going to third down. Put a good
frame job, a good frame job for a little fifteen
seconds of same.
Speaker 5 (18:59):
I guess you know, it's all what these kids are
going for.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
Okay, so you got the week off, right, and then
Colt's at home. What's your mentality in regards to Will
and whether or not you'll starter come off the bench?
Speaker 5 (19:15):
Yeah, I Uh. Kelly said last night that you know,
Will bearing he's shelfy, that he'll he'll still be kind
of a slated in guy. So I'm going to continue
to prepare and you know, support him if that's If
that's the direction, we're going to go and help them
get ready and and try to help the Titans win
(19:35):
whatever way I can. Got to buy week obviously, so
you I'm not going to speculate that I don't. I
don't fully know. I think that's what he said last night.
That's the direction we're going to go, and and but
I'll be ready as always, And you know, whether it's.
Speaker 1 (19:52):
What's what's this life? I mean, what's his life life?
Speaker 2 (19:55):
For you?
Speaker 1 (19:56):
Mason? Mason Rudolf join us Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Trader.
You're a pride toal guy. You were the start in Pittsburgh.
They brought another you know, they go and draft another guy.
Eventually you end up beating him out, you go to
the playoffs, and yet then they go and bring in
two new quarterbacks. Obviously new offense. Now you go here,
you check in, you win the game. Like, so you're
sitting there going like, I can win football games this league.
I did it last year. And yet you know, even
(20:19):
even last night, Callahan and obviously Will's younger was drafted
by the team, grated different regime. But what is that
what is that existence like of maintaining your level of
self confidence while also being willing to have other guys play,
and you know your job as a backup is to
get the other guy ready.
Speaker 5 (20:39):
Yeah, it's definitely your You're living in limbo quite a bit,
and I've gotten used to it, but you never totally
get fully. You know, you didn't want to be complacent
with being a backup, and I don't. I mean, like
you said, I felt dart and confident in the way
I played last year, even the season to get us
in the playoffs and winning games and playing good football.
(21:01):
And last night, you know, I didn't like the scoreboard up,
but I felt I felt good on you know, not
having much work with the first team offense. So I
think in the end, like it's it's just a good
it's a good lesson for life, and like you know,
always staying ready and I think it'll make me, make
(21:21):
me a better man, you know, maybe a better father
and a husband one day, just just just the old
you know, the hardening that the NFL has made me,
you know, made molded me into of it's it's just
cutthroat and they're always trying to replace you. And uh,
you know, if you don't have confidence in yourself, and
(21:42):
you know, there's not a lot of people will I think.
I think I've had a lot of confidence in myself
and the way I played, and my teammates had confidence
in me and when I step on the field, and
that's all I try to worry about.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
Last thing, I really appreciate your time, Mase.
Speaker 5 (21:58):
You know one start direct you Doug with you know
the new gig up there in Green Bay, and you
know we talked the text couple of times. But that's
awesome for you.
Speaker 1 (22:07):
Yes, I really appreciate it. And I do expect you
to be in attendance at at one of the games
at some point in time. Those are my there's my expectations.
We play, we play oh State the day after you
play the Patriots. Just so you know, case you want to fly,
case you want to fly in from Nash Vegas. You
know you can. You can sit on my bench. You
can sit on my bench if you want. Crabtree can
(22:30):
be my my, my my bodyguard, and you can. You
can you can call a couple you can call it
cold plays. Uh yeah, sure, what not? What what about
this team? Like anybody looks at a one and three
record and you're like, but if you watch the games
and I did you know a couple of will turnovers?
Speaker 5 (22:48):
Right?
Speaker 1 (22:48):
I mean trying to make plays? Is the difference beteam
beating the Bears, beating the Jets, being three and one,
on being three and one on the season. Where do
you think this team is in terms of expectations? I see,
you know Callahan year one. There's a lot of changes
going on. Now you come up to the meat of
you still got coltson ad Bills at Lions ad Chargers. Uh.
(23:09):
What are your thoughts on where this team is in
its growth phase?
Speaker 5 (23:13):
Yeah? I mean I think a lot of a lot
of close games. Obviously the last four weeks, we've got
the guys to do it, and we've got you know,
a heck of a group of receivers Ridley hop Tyler Boyd,
Talen Burks and then you know, the two headed wellster
Tony Pollard and Hodge Spears who carried us, you know,
carried us last night. And then and then a great
(23:35):
defense that darn Wilson who came down from from Baltimore,
who's got that you know, attack mentality and then heat
you up in different looks and they played great last
night as well. And so I think, yeah, anytime you
have a you know, rookie head coach is going to
be sort of some you know, uh I guess skeptics.
But I think we've got the we've got the horsepowered
(23:56):
man to win games. And you know, like you said,
on paper, you look at those opponents and you're like, wow,
that's kind of a daunting task. But like the NFL is,
anyone can win each and every week. You see that
every week, and I think you get into the week
and you start pressing for him, and by by Saturday,
you know, Saturday night, you're feeling as confident as ever
(24:17):
and like you can go beat the eighty five Bears.
So I think, I think, I think we got a good,
good group that stayed together. The head coaches knows what
he's doing. He's he's a smart guy, he's a great
play caller, and we're going to hit the second half
of the season, you know with some fire.
Speaker 1 (24:34):
Makes you the best man. I really appreciate you joining us.
Congrats on the dub. Can't wait to see you back
out in the turf in the Titans uniform really really soon.
Thanks for our guest.
Speaker 5 (24:42):
Thanks dog, appreciate it. I have to be one.

(25:04):
imagine that, like you get just get done. You win
a game, you know, your NFL, your backup quarterback, you
get in MONEYNT football, You win a game, and then
you know, you get back to that, You get to
your phone and your girlfriend's like, who dat what don't
and then you see that, uh yeah that was nine
months ago.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
I didn't know his relationship status at all, so I
wasn't sure.
Speaker 2 (25:32):
If there was.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
It was more scandalous because of the situation that he
would have been in, but I felt that that he
addressed it pretty well to be like, yeah, no, I
did send her a message, she responded back to me.
And this was also months ago that this happened. But
I think that that's all pretty fair.
Speaker 1 (25:51):
Yeah, I think he was single right to mingle in
this in the early off season. I think I don't know. Again,
I haven't pressed him like friends, but I'm not act
like we're like best friends. Whatever. I have impressed him on,
like what is current? I don't know how long this
girlfriend has been around? Would be my my thing. But
that was that was fun.
Speaker 2 (26:09):
That was fun.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
It's also really good, like he's a really good, thoughtful guy,
Like something happens in your life. He sends you a
text like, good dude to see him do well last night.
And obviously you didn't have to throw the ball a
ton man. That Tony Pollard cut you want to talk
about some speed? Holy cow, that was impressive.

DG Show broadcast live from Pretty Sonny here at Green Bay, Wisconsin.
And I actually got excited this morning because I knew
it was Thursday, and I did know what year we
were doing, but I did know it's stone call to
throwback Thursday. Right. Jace du came up with this one,
(27:21):
and it's just his way of being the FM morning DJ.
He always wanted to be right. That's the truth, JASEU,
Is that about right? Like that's truthfully? Like if I
could be the old FMDJ with these really cool, sort
of cheesy bits and bringing the energy every day and
then telling wacky stories and making comments on like you
(27:41):
look you at your podcast? On the Bachelor Bachelorette, what's
it called?
Speaker 2 (27:46):
The Bachelor Lifestyle with Brian Butchner.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
Bachelor Lifestyle Brian Beckner Bachelor Lifestyle Brian Beckner, so he's
got that working for him and he came up with this.
Speaker 4 (28:00):
Now I want to tell the listeners something. By the way,
since you brought this up, I need to play it.
You talk about me always wanted to be a morning
DJ and whatnot. Well, at some point, I think.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Everybody want to be a morning DJ.
Speaker 4 (28:15):
Thought somebody formally works here put me in a sitcom.
I did two episodes of Gary Unmarried, and just this
week one of the listeners brought this to.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
My attention.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
Just because somebody passed away this week and they're like, oh,
I remember that from that show. So this is me
being a sports talk show host on Gary Unmarried two
thousand and ten.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
Ty Coup, Babe, Ruth.
Speaker 4 (28:44):
These guys were no saints, and now with all the steroids,
you're going to make an example out of Pete Rose.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
In ten years, Pete Rose will be in the Hall
of Fame.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
You get bet on it. I don't take that bet.
Speaker 5 (28:56):
Pete Rose.
Speaker 4 (29:00):
Now granted the not the greatest joke in the world.
I don't know if it warranted that laughter, but I
thought that our listeners are going to kick out of that.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Today.
Speaker 4 (29:12):
I want to like tell you that this is a
segment that is a work in progress. I had a
vision for it. Dan had a vision for it. I
came up with the name, and we're just kind of
working out the quirks, the kinks. Okay, time out, time out,
what's going on. I had a vision for it, and
then you thought it was a different vision. Hold up,
(29:33):
hold on, yeah, hold up, hold on, hold up, hold.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
On, wait, wait wait, okay, okay, So Dan, your vision
of it was what.
Speaker 2 (29:41):
I thought.
Speaker 3 (29:42):
We would talk about the big sports moments that happened
in each of these years.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
Oh, which is what I thought. And then Jay Stud's like, hey,
why don't we do the FM Morning DJ. Nineteen eighty
four was the year, let's talk about what albums were hot?
Speaker 2 (29:57):
So this was how I took Dan's. First of all,
I wanted to own the name.
Speaker 4 (30:02):
Don't call it a throwback is yeah, because I always
think it's funny when people say don't call it a comeback,
and then they tell you they're coming back from something,
so don't call it a throwback. And then I thought
that since every Thursday there's a matchup on Thursday Night,
I could take a past matchup of those exact teams
(30:24):
and then focus on that matchup and then we just
make it a conversation about that year that I choose.
So we're gonna kind of do a hybrid between Dan's
initial concept and mine. It goes something like this, Sam,
do you have anything like rewind music or something to
get me into this same All right, let's rewind it
(30:49):
back to December two thousand and two, twenty two years ago.
The Bucks faced the Falcons in a December game where
second year star Michael Vick played the Buccaneers for the
first time, probably the second time since they played it
(31:12):
twice and twice a year. The Buccaneers kicked their butts.
Now the Buccaneers, if you don't recall, that was the
first year that John Gruden coached them and he led
them to a Super Bowl title. In this game, the
Bucks really kind of mopped the floor with the Falcons.
It wasn't even close. It was a thirty four to
(31:32):
ten game. Our guy Brad Johnson led the Bucks in passing.
Mike Alstott starred playing the Bucks. Great name those great
defensive names for the Bucks that are all Hall of famers,
including John winch On a Rodney Barber. If he's in
the Hall of Fame Derek Brooks. It was just a
(31:54):
one win on the way to their one Super Bowl
or I guess their first Super Bowl champion hip. And
what I remember most from that year was this John
Gruden thing to where like he led a team to
a Super Bowl and he defeated a Raider team that
he had just built and left the year before. It's
(32:15):
like it doesn't get enough credit I think in the
history of coaching. John Gruden built this Raiders team that
eventually went to the Super Bowl and lost to a
team that he coached.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Pretty amazing, Uh, humble bragg.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
I was there. Remember Barrett Robbins went missing the morning
of the game. Bart Robinson the All Pro center for
the Raiders. And then the story was that they didn't
change any of the audible calls for rich Gannon. So
Tampa literally knew exactly what they were going to do
with all the with all the audibles because they hadn't
(32:50):
changed when Gruden was there.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
That is a humble brag that you were there. By
the way, this is called.
Speaker 6 (33:00):
And call it a throwback, thack thirsty, I throw back.
Speaker 1 (33:04):
We're thrown back to two thousand and one, correct, two
thousand and two, two thousand and two.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
Good to now, what do you got?
Speaker 5 (33:10):
Dan?
Speaker 1 (33:11):
Well?
Speaker 3 (33:12):
As soon as I found out that the year was
two thousand and two, my mind immediately went to college
football and what ended up being the greatest season of
my life in college football. It was the year that
Ohio State went unbeaten and ultimately with Top Miami in
the Fiesta Bowl, the national championship game on the third
day of January in two thousand and three. But the
(33:33):
two thousand and two season was really dominated by the
Hurricanes as the Buckeyes the second half of the year
with Maurice Clarett's shoulder injury, each week was a nail
bier as they squeaked through the big ten wins at Wisconsin,
wins at Northwestern, most notably a win at Purdue on
(33:55):
a fourth down call that they now call Holy Buckeye
or Craig ken'son Crensall hit Michael Jenkins in the end
zone and what was an awful game. How do I know,
Humble Bregg I was there. I was in Westlafayette for
that game. That was what six to three at the time,
and the Buckeye's season hanging on the brink in that
(34:16):
fourth down call, and then they escaped against Michigan with
an interception by Will Allen at the goal line to
preserve their spot in the National Championship game. For as
dominant as Miami was throughout those seasons and that season
as well, Ohio State struggled when Maurice Cleorett went down
with that shoulder injury. And the second half of the
year was just close game after close came after close
(34:38):
game that just kept on winning.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
Them and then ended up winning the National championship.
Speaker 1 (34:43):
That's going, That's really really going, Sammy got when you
want on.
Speaker 8 (34:47):
Absolutely, Ohio State story kind of ties in with Iowa
a little bit.
Speaker 2 (34:53):
Both teams finished eight to zero in the Big Ten.
Speaker 8 (34:56):
They shared the Big Ten championship, but they did not
play each other, so you could really say they were
co Big Ten champions. Of course, Ohio State with their
unbeaten record and I really remember that year. They Yeah,
they won a lot of close games. The Buckeyes did
the Hawkeyes out. If they did not lose give up
a huge lead to Iowa State at home earlier in
the season, they would have been undefeated. They I think
he was like a twenty four to seven half time lead.
(35:17):
They ended up losing that.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Game, but they went eight to oh.
Speaker 8 (35:20):
They had Brad Banks, who went all the way to
the heisman ceremony, finished second to Carson Palmer of USC.
And when Iowa finished the regular season eleven to one,
Brad Banks lost the heisman to Carson Palmer and they
ended up instead of going to the Rose Bowl, they
(35:41):
went to the Orange Bowl to face those USC Trojans
with Carson Palmer, and unfortunately, outside of an amazing kickoff
return for a touchdown to open the game for Iowa,
they folded thirty eight to seventeen to those Trojans.
Speaker 2 (35:53):
Did the Rose Bowl take Oklahoma?
Speaker 5 (35:55):
Was that?
Speaker 2 (35:56):
That's something like that?
Speaker 8 (35:57):
I think the last, the last game of the regular
season was at Minnesota, and that's where Iowa fans were
so exuberant with passion and overjoyed, and you fork that
they tore down the gulpos there at the Hubert H.
Humphrey Metrodome and tried to run out of the rotating
doors with them and they couldn't. They had like saw
them up or something. It was crazy. It was Minnesota
(36:18):
fans haven't forgiven Iowa for that since, but they all were,
they all had roses in their in their mouths, you know,
like that. That's very very commonplace picture you see where
guys that they finished a big season they have the
rose in their mouth, like we're.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Going to the Rose Bowl.
Speaker 8 (36:31):
But they ended up going to the Orange Bowl and
a little bit of a downturn on the end of
the season. But a great year nonetheless for Iowa. Well, yeah,
co big Ten champions there with the Buckeyes.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
So we picked, we picked a year that each of
you had amazing college football memories. Yes, I'm feeling your
passion here and I just looked it up.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
The Orange Bowl actually took Iowa first because they had
the first pick of the teams that weren't in the
title game.
Speaker 8 (36:55):
I think Iowa was third, weren't they, Yes, yes, so
did Yeah. I was sort of like the Orange Bowl
wanted Iowa more. They thought they were going to the Roads.
They were fifth in the BCS, but third I think
in the Ape.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Cool at the time, and number one in our hearts. Yeah,
number one in our hearts.
Speaker 8 (37:09):
That I I'll just say, I mean that Ohio State
team gave you a lot of future NFL stars.
Speaker 2 (37:14):
That Iowa team gave you.
Speaker 8 (37:16):
Dallas Clark Bob Sanders, Robert Gallery At a lot of
big time players who go in the NFL and have
nice careers. So yeah, though that early two thousand's college
football era, it was also sort of the end of
like Miami and Nebraska being powers. Like Miami would lose
to Ohio eight in that National Championship game and they
started taper off after that. The previous year, Miami smoked
(37:37):
Nebraska in the National Championship Game and then Nebraska really
hasn't been the same since.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
I don't think Miami's fall was that quick, but part
of it was, you know, they had coaching changes and
then like USC NCAA probation and then you know those
they go probation, then they be fine, then probation, then
they be fine. Uh, Sam, let's let's let's test your
knowledge of that game. What's the most There's two memorable
(38:06):
plays in that game. Miami Ohio State. Okay, one of
the greatest college football games. I think it's probably a
better game overall than Texas USC, but maybe it doesn't
get the credit. And then there's the controversial call. So
two big plays. Everybody knows that. Everybody remembers that game
by do you know either one of them.
Speaker 8 (38:25):
Well, one was it was a pass interference on Miami.
It was very controversial that what Dan ended up pushing
the game to overtime.
Speaker 3 (38:32):
It was in the first overtime that Ohio State would
have lost if they didn't call pass interference on Miami.
Chris Gamble in the corner of the end zone went
up for it. I still think that past interference happened
before we see it on camera. I agree, and Miami
fans don't want to hear it. But what we saw
in film was not actually where the infraction happened on
(38:54):
the play.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
I mean, if you watch it still in standard def,
replay is far different. You're like, oh my god, it's
so much better out yes, yes, and right sure. Then
and then it was the same game.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
Coming up short on the second Big Planet.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Are you talking about Willis mcgahey's knee, Yes, yes, oh okay, yeah, so.
Speaker 1 (39:17):
Willis mcgaye his knee went backwards, he got hit like
a helmet on the knee, and the actual like you
if you bet your knee right now and you made
it like a V, right, imagine the V being in reverse.
That's all I remember about that play. And then you're
sitting there going like, I'll ever play football again. Then
Will mcgg's fifteen years.
Speaker 2 (39:39):
He'd kind of defied that and had a nice career.
I'll tell you that.
Speaker 3 (39:42):
Like ohiost they couldn't do anything on offense in the
National Championship game. But Sean Taylor had an interception in
the end zone that he brought out and then Maurice
Clarette stripped him of the football, and so Ohio State
actually retained possession and Miami actually had to kick a
field goal as time expired in the game just descended
into overtime. They also had a first and goal at
the one yard line in the second overtime and were
(40:04):
unable to cash it in from one yard out, as
Ohio stated at a great goal line stand. And then
Ken Dorsey was kind of was hurt on one of
the plays, left for a snap, came back in, but
Miami was unable to cash in from the one yard line.
Had four place to do so and could couldn't do it.
We could do this whole segment on that game if
we wanted to. But wait, there were other things that happened.
(40:26):
End of the Lakers dynasty. They were all the three
peat two thousand and two.
Speaker 1 (40:30):
I didn't get that was that was we were going around.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Oh I'm sorry, I'm sorry around the.
Speaker 1 (40:35):
Going around the thing mine was in the Lakers dynasty
two thousand and two to three, Peete, That's what I
just said, Doug. But there were lots of other There
were lots of other parts to it that I don't
know how much you remember, right, because they had Peyton,
Gary Payton, they had karmelone, but they were both hurt,
(40:56):
you know, they had injuries in that and it was
it was a dysfunctional group. But there's all other parts
to it, right. Detroit made the mid season trade to
get Rashid Wallace. Rashid Wallace was in Atlanta for like
a day but never played. But that was a gigantic
trade for for the Pistons, and no team had ever
(41:17):
won all three of those home games. He used to
go two three too, until the Pistons, till the Pistons.
So I would definitely say there was it was obvious
the rift between Kobe and Shack, but it was not
a strong surrounding cast. It was they went for it
with all these big names and it did not work.
Did not work.
Speaker 4 (41:38):
I mean, go ahead, we can't forget Doug's baseball team
won their one World Series championship.
Speaker 2 (41:46):
I ever tell you.
Speaker 1 (41:46):
Guys that story of how I didn't go to Game seven?
Speaker 2 (41:49):
I don't think so.
Speaker 1 (41:50):
Baseball Baseball, did you have.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
A coaching clinic that day?
Speaker 1 (41:54):
And sort of sort of? So there used to be
touring teams that played again Division I schools, right and
a long time ago it was like Athletes in Action
and Phillip sixty six. They would have these teams of
former college players. Sometimes it'd be a foreign team. And
(42:17):
from about ninety nine till two thousand and five, some
friends of mine, the Pump Brothers, they in partnership with
EA Sports. They kind of took over that little industry
and one year I got to play with them. Well,
that year I played with EA Sports and I played
my dad had a team where we played against UCLA
handed them at that point, it was their worst loss
(42:40):
ever in poly Pavilion. We actually played against Oaklham State,
Wichita State, Marshall, San Diego State collected a bunch of wins. Well,
we were practicing that night and we were leaving like
the next day for some of these exhibition games, and
I was like, Dad, that Angels are Game seven. I
got tickets. He's like, all right, well it'll be on
when we get home. I was like, it's right down
(43:00):
the street and I got tickets and here's whereas like, well,
why do you care about the year? It's like, hello,
I've been angel with my whole life. You're a Mets fan.
Like have we not talked? And he's like, ah, Ael,
I need you to practice. You want to play, you
got to practice. And at the time, it's two thousand
(43:20):
and two, twenty six years old. Yeah, twenty six years old,
and my dad still give me the practice thing, like
I know all the plays. I'm the one who does them.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
You know.
Speaker 3 (43:34):
One thing we missed from the NFL was it was
the first year of the Houston Texans and so you
then had the change of all the divisions and you
went to the four team divisions. It was the first
year the Seahawks were in the NFC West, moving over
from the AFC West. And for those that don't remember,
(43:54):
there was a period of time where a team at
a buye every single week because there were only thirty
one teams in the league. But when Houston came into
the league, that allowed the NFL to then even out
the schedule and you didn't have a buy in week
one or a buy in week seventeen, which some teams did.
Speaker 2 (44:11):
Awful planning.
Speaker 1 (44:13):
Yes, it was such bad plan. Do you remember who
the first pick of the expansion Draft was for the
Houston Texans?
Speaker 2 (44:22):
Well, I know they took in the regular draft, but
the expansion draft?
Speaker 5 (44:28):
Is that?
Speaker 1 (44:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (44:31):
No?
Speaker 2 (44:34):
Who was it?
Speaker 1 (44:36):
Anybody want to take a shot?
Speaker 2 (44:38):
Was the first one of the regular drafts?
Speaker 5 (44:40):
Yes? Was that? Was that?
Speaker 1 (44:41):
The first one?
Speaker 2 (44:42):
I'm not going to guess among a foul.
Speaker 1 (44:44):
He never played, He never played a game. I don't
believe for it. He was, you know, an all pro
Tony BISSELLI that's right.
Speaker 2 (44:55):
Can call.
Speaker 3 (44:56):
And he was the first draft pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yes, yeah,
but that's good. That's good trivia.
Speaker 1 (45:05):
I like that and everybody. And that's don't call it
a throwback.
Speaker 2 (45:13):
Don't call it a throwback. Throw back, thirsty
