Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin cowher
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
All Right, it is a Monday. We could have breaking
new on Dan Hurley, Yukon coach and the Lakers gig.
I got a feeling, I know what's gonna happen. We're
in Los Angeles. It's the Herd wherever you may be
and however you may be listening. Thanks for making us
part of your day. Jmac. A lot of things going on.
(00:48):
What's not going on is the Mavericks offense very much
a one man team. Listen, it happens sometimes in these
big events you don't get a great man, a big fight,
a super Bowl. This looks lobsided. Is that fair?
Speaker 2 (01:06):
And you call Kyrie.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Irving for as much you know as we kissed his
butt the last two weeks, he's been atrocious to the
final he can't do anything against anybody.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Well, I do not believe this is a difficult finals
to explain. Number One, that's why I picked the Celtics
in six. They've got a much deeper roster, especially offensively.
They just got more guys that could score twenty two points. Secondly,
Kyrie is projecting that it doesn't bother him. Clearly it does.
The fans in Boston are in his head. He's played
(01:37):
like garbage the first two games. Another thing is the
Celtics are hunting Luca. This is one of the things
we talked about before the series. Make Luca work on
the defensive end. He will eventually wear down. I didn't
think he'd wear down by Game two, but he looks tired,
fatigued and beat up, and porzingis when he's healthy. I'm sorry,
(01:59):
He's just different. Matters a lot. This has become a
one man team Luca against the much deeper roster. It
reminds me of some of those Lebron James finals where
he was overmatched. The difference is Luca is not getting blamed.
Lebron always took all the heat. The Celtics right now
have five different players, five averaging sixteen or more. Dallas
(02:23):
has won. You could walk into a YMCA and say,
see the talent disparity here. The Celtics, Biggs, Horford, Porzingis
are just much more experienced and more skilled than the
Mavericks Bigs. Sometimes in sports you just get bad matchups,
even in a national championship. We've seen it in college
(02:44):
football a lot Denver Boston what everybody thought would happen
didn't happen because the Nuggets blew a twenty point lead
in Game seven. That would be a great finals. I mean,
to sum it up, Luca had a bad second half yesterday,
just a bad second half, more turnovers than field goals made,
and Dallas circle the drain. Jason Tatum's been off for
(03:08):
two straight games in the finals and they've rolled in both.
It's just different rosters. Boston got a lot more dudes. Now.
The West has been deeper than the East for the
last two decades or more, but that doesn't mean the
best team can't come out of the East. I mean,
Porzingis didn't play at all in those playoffs in the
(03:28):
East and they rolled over everybody. And I think if
he was missing, this would be a much more competitive series.
But it should be noted as much. Boston dominated the
Eastern Conference regular season and playoffs. They also had a
record of twenty five and seven in the regular season
against the West, so they're the best team best point differential.
(03:51):
We said this last week, the NBA would prefer you
not be able to do what the Celtics did, which
is add two excellent players to already two three really
good players. It feels lobsided. It feels like a mismatch.
So if you go back and look at the playoffs,
you've seen sweeps, gentlemen sweeps and mismatches, and the Celtics
(04:11):
have been involved in most of them. It's got a
very rock paper scissors feel to it, varsity versus JV.
And I think Luca summed up the loss after that's what.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
The number one team in the NBA, with the number
one record, they have a lot of great players. Pratically,
anybody can get off. So honestly, I think we didn't
do a bad job defending today. We took away some trees.
We can test some more trees. But like I say,
you know, I had too many turnovers and we missed
(04:43):
a lot of fritters, So I think that costs to city.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
I said this last week. The Celtics are too good
and too deep not to win at least one finals.
They're a little too odd and historically weird to be
a dynasty. And by the end of next year, Derek White,
they won't be able to afford him. I imagine, you know,
poor Zingis's health, Drew Holliday's getting older. But for this year,
(05:10):
this looks like easily the best team. And next year,
my guess is they win again in the East and
meet the Denver Nuggets again. But right now you've got
yourself a mismatch the Bigs for Boston more skilled, older
defensive wings, Boston's got more offensive fluidity, Boston's better.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
It's not close.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
So a big story over the weekend. Caitlin Clark, who
is not one of the top twelve to fifteen WNBA players,
did not make the Olympic team. I hear that all
the time, But Christian Latner wasn't one of the top
one hundred players in the NBA and he made an
Olympic team. Jalen Brown, for the record, is not on
(05:53):
this Olympic team. He's one of the top fifteen players.
He's gonna win finals, MVP potentially Diana Tarassi is not
one of the fifteen best players in the women's game.
She's making the team. Olympic Basketball team men's and women's
has always been subjective and very political. At the end
(06:14):
of the roster, Isaiah Thomas didn't make it. Why Michael
Jordan didn't like him? To me, it feels like an
opportunity wasted When Connor McGregor came into the UFC. There
were fighters over the last five six years who passed
up immediate title fights to fight Connor McGregor. Why, eyeballs, Yeah,
(06:38):
you don't think when Tiger Woods had that ten twelve
year historic run, guys didn't fight to be in his
foursome eyeballs. The WNBA Finals had seven hundred thousand viewers.
The draft that included Caitlin Clark had three times as many.
I would make the argument, like a Tiger Woods or
a Connor McGregor in their prime, she'll make other people
(07:01):
money beyond herself. Rising tide lifts all boats. Instead of
getting seven million viewers, you'll get fourteen to eighteen with
Caitlyn Clark maybe more. The fifth, sixth, seventh, eight, ninth
best player on the women's Olympic team would make six
or seven figures in endorsements. The women's basketball team does
(07:21):
not lose in the Olympics. I think they've won seven
straight Golds. You probably didn't know that because you didn't watch,
and you would life, whether it's a relationship, business, sports,
life gives you so few big waves when they do.
Grab your surfboard, Bryce Harper, boxing's never had another Muhammad Ali,
(07:46):
Tiger Woods, Connor McGregor, Caitlyn Clark. I'm hearing all this rigidity.
I know women's basketball. I've covered the women's Olympigs. Nobody
knows it like me. Oh god, you sound like an
old baseball writer. Stop being precious, Stop being rigid, Stop
(08:10):
telling us how much you know. Here's what I know.
WNBA now is flying chartered flights. She would triple the
TV ratings. Again, life doesn't give you. Sports doesn't give you.
Business doesn't give you a lot of these kind of waves.
Grab the surfboard. She's here for you. By the way,
(08:32):
the NBA would die to have a domestic star nearly
as popular as Caitlin Clark. Oh wait, they do, Anthony Edwards.
They put him on the team. Anthony Edwards today is
not as good as Jalen Brown. I think he could
be by the end of next year, and I think
after the trade deadline. I've said this, he and Wemby
(08:54):
could be surging as faces of the league. But Aunt
Edwards isn't as good as Jalen Brown. Now. Aunt is unrefined,
He's up and down, he's hot and cold. Jalen Brown's
great every night. They found a spot for him on
the team. Women's basketball feels like it's suffering from spite
or historically low self esteem, where they want to prove
(09:18):
that they know more than you do. Here's what I know.
Caitlin Clark would make all the other women on the
Olympic team money. She'd make them more famous, She'd give
them opportunities. They'd become potentially more household names. It's not
just about Caitlin Clark. In fact, I'd argue it's very
(09:40):
little about Caitlin Clark. It's an opportunity wasted. You go
ahead and lecturous about how you know the game, and
you've covered the Olympics. Good for you, But some stuff
is business. One oh one. This is a layup and
you blew it. It's not a three sixty, it's not
a no look past. It's not beating the Celtics. This
(10:04):
was a layup and you bricked it all right, j Mac.
We got a lot of stuff going on. Tayl and Clark,
by the way, has been amazing. Here's she's so good.
Here's what she said to the media.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
Honestly, no disappointment, Like I think it just gives you something,
something to work for. You know, that's a dream. You know,
hopefully one day I can be there. And I think
it's just a little more motivation. You remember that, and
you know hopefully in four years, when four years comes
back around, you know.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
I can be there again.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Every time she talks, she says the right thing. It
reminds me a lot of Taylor Swift, you know, like,
like you do realize this won't last forever. Taylor Swift
is not going to have seven of her other tours
as big as the last one. Even for rock stars,
Muhammad Ali had probably five big fights, a lot of
them nobody watched, right, like, this is a moment in time.
(11:01):
You seese it. In four years she'll be a good
WNBA player, she'll be an all star, but it won't
feel like this. Yeah, this was your moment. This was
the wave. Grab the surfboard, get on it. It's the
biggest wave coming for the next two to three four years.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
It's funny Drew Holliday, who's starring in the NBA Finals
right now. He's not one of the twelve best players
in the NBA. He's on the Olympic team because a
fit and roll. And you're telling me Caitlin Clark the
best three point shooter.
Speaker 6 (11:30):
I know, not.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
Percentage wise, but she's the best three point shooter in
women's basketball. She's dropping bombs in thirty telling me there's
no rule for her. It's not a real reach in
a three ball era. It's not a reach for either
the men's or the women's Olympic team to say, listen,
this player's not quite there yet, but we may get
down to somebody in the Olympics. They can get us
back with three shots, nine points and forty seconds. That
(11:53):
It's not like you're asking to put like a limited
defensive player or just a big who doesn't.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Run the floor. You're talking about an elite ball handler,
passer and shooter. In a ball handler, passer shooter era,
you can find a spot on the bench for and I.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
Love the point where, well, what if she doesn't play,
her fans are going to be outraged. Caitlin Clark's gonna
get on the court. She's too good of a competitor.
Like worry about that down the world.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Yeah, that's one of those I pay way too much
in taxes. I paid a million dollars in taxes. Probably
not the worst problem in the world. We'll give you
an update on Dan Hurley. My hunch he'll stay at Yukon.
That is my hunch. We'll see Colin Wright Colin wrong
forty five minutes from now.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
in noon Easter nine am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
All Right, here we go. Where Colin was wrong, Where
Colin was right, Where Colin was right. I like Jason
Tatum a lot, but I've pushed back that he's a
top three or four player. Listen, he took a back
seat in the Eastern Conference finals to Jalen Brown. He's
taking a back seat to Porzingis and Drew Holiday in
the final. Again. I can like him, and I like
him a lot. He's collaborative, he's smart, he plays on
(13:04):
both ends. He fills the box score, but he is
shooting thirty one percent in two games. And I do
like my number one, and he's gonna get a Max deal.
I want him to be my closer. I don't want
Porzingis or Drew Holliday or Jalen Brown being my closer again.
I like Jason Tatum. I'd signed Jason Tatum. This finals
is kind of what I've been talking about for the
(13:26):
last month.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
Where Colin was row Kyrie.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Irving, I thought he arrived. He hasn't. I do think
Boston's crowds a little bit in his head. He's done
a little bit more Kyrie Iso ball. The MAVs are
minus twenty two when he's on the floor. I just
don't like what I see from the offense for Dallas.
It doesn't feel as symmetrical or as balanced. It's a
little Iso stuff. I thought they had a real chance
(13:50):
in this series. They without Kyrie's scoring, look completely overwhelmed.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Where Colin was right, we said.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
Though, when they got Drew Holliday and Kristap Porzingis, we said,
we have the date. Oh my, how did they get
these guys? Porzingis went to Washington and really turned into
an All Star level player. He's the first Unicorn, not
chet holmgen her Wemby, and you're seeing his length on defense,
(14:18):
his offensive viability and dexterity on offense. Brad Stevens knew
the truth. I need another go to score on this roster,
and they got it.
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Where Colin was raw.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
I thought the Yankees would clean up on the Dodgers.
They came into this series on fire, and the Dodgers didn't.
The back end of their order was struggling. They had
been six and four in their last ten and Teoscar
Hernandez had quite a weekend.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Down a tow to two from Kanelee, Hernandez lifts a
fly ball. A left center field back goes Dugo running
out of room. Good day plan.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
Slam tell us here Hernandez Dodgers local.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
Sweet kid.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Dodgers looked more refined, more polished. Yankee struggled at times
defensively where Colin was right. I keep saying women's basketball guys,
come on, why did you make Caitlin Clark's WNBA schedule
so rigorous in the first month and put her on
the Olympic team. Bryce Harper, Connor McGregor when you get
(15:31):
these stars. You know, Tiger Woods comes to the tour,
get him on television. I don't think she's one of
the twelve fifteen best players, but I would argue Jalen
Brown's not on the men's Olympics team. I think he's
one of the top fifteen players. She is television gold.
(15:51):
The Olympics have always been at the back end of
a roster. Political I think it's a miss where Colin
was right. I like JJ McCarthy out of Michigan, but
I thought he was a prospect that needed to sit,
and according to stories from Jeremy Kevin Seffert my bad
at ESPN, he is a clear backup to Sam Darnald
(16:13):
at this point. For the record, the last two coaches
that signed Donald Kyle Shanahan and Kevin O'Connell. Donald is
still viewed in the league as a really talented guy
that can start, and Kevin O'Connell sees McCarthy for what
he is, a little small and rough around the edges.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
We were right where Colin was raw.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
A report that Zach Wilson's in the mix to start
for the Broncos. What I liked him as a backup.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
I like that.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
He moved west. He's beating out bow Nicks. I'll just
take a wrong on that and move on. Where Colin
was right, we said the nfls always treated their sport
more than any league, like a TV show. They announced
the Bears Texans will kick off the Hall of Fame
game August first. This is a smart move. Caleb Williams
(17:05):
front and center. The Bears may be forgotten by some,
but they remain an incredible television product. The minute the
Bears are good in Chicago is in and watching. It's
like the Kansas City Chiefs. Something about football in Middle
America that works. Where Colin was right, we said the
(17:25):
pitch clock would make baseball infinitely more watchable. Have you
seen the baseball ratings at Fox up twenty five percent?
Have you seen the baseball ratings at the other place
up twenty percent? Baseball didn't listen to their die hards.
They have done two things in the last couple of
years that have paid off. Pitch clock speed the game up,
(17:51):
and they've created some baseball events. Phillies Mets in London.
It's an event. It felt huge. The cam, the home
plate umpire camera just keeps getting better and better. Baseball
felt big this weekend, and it felt fast. The game,
the pitch clock infinitely more watchable. You're seeing attendance for
(18:15):
the second straight year and ratings on the national broadcast
Up Up Up. Sometimes you gotta listen to the casuals,
not the die hards.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon Eastern non a em Pacific.
Speaker 7 (18:31):
Hey, we're Cavino and Rich Fox Sports Radio every day
five to seven pm Eastern. But here's the thing, we
never have enough time to get to everything we want
to get to.
Speaker 8 (18:40):
And that's why we have a brand new podcast called
over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in
our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for. Yeah, you blubber, list lame and me.
Speaker 7 (18:54):
Well, you know what it's called over promise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.
Speaker 8 (18:58):
Well, it's a Cavino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk
life and relationships and if Rich and I are arguing
about something or we didn't have enough time. It will
continue on our after show called over Promised.
Speaker 7 (19:12):
Well, if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make
sure you check out over Promised and also Uncensored by
the way, so maybe we'll go at it even a
little harder. It's gonna be the best after show podcast
of all time.
Speaker 8 (19:22):
There you go, over Promising, and remember you could see
on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen to over Promised
with Cavino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts
or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 1 (19:34):
All right, it's official, wojbaumb Dan Hurley has turned down
the Lakers offers six years seventy millions. So the Lakers
offered him eleven and a half million dollars per year,
which is double is Yukon salary. We predicted it. That
was our lean. I said, I felt sixty five thirty
five he would pass. I had two really good sources
(19:57):
on this one somebody that talked to Hurley this week weekend,
and he was having real doubts. He was asking people
who he didn't know particularly well, what are your thoughts
on it? What would you do? He was searching for answers,
and my feeling is there were too many certainties. His
wife's from the East coast, Yukon's a juggernaut. He's the
(20:17):
best college coach they've got, recruiting more mentum, it's you know,
it's a nice place to live. He's got control of personnel.
His parents history is high school and college coaching, not
the NBA. The Lakers is a big brand. I do
not think it's a great job right now. Chris Brussard
will join me top of the hour, So my feeling
(20:39):
was sixty five thirty five. He would stay anytime I've
had to make a big decision if I'm going to
take the job, I kind of know really quickly after
an interview, if I'm asking myself questions thirty six hours,
forty eight hours after an interview, you didn't come with
a compelling enough case. And I'll just say this is
Jay mcin made really interesting points earlier that you have
(21:01):
to strike when the iron is hot. That is true
in most cases. That it's like it's like Taylor Swift
is on fire, get her on tour, like I get that,
but be very careful. One of my rules in life,
be very careful about trying to get happier than happy.
(21:24):
Dan Hurley, wife's from Jersey, great program, He's a very
happy guy who just won a national title. Be careful
about trying to be happier than happy. If you're happy,
you won go on the internet. Everybody's angry, everybody's pissed,
nobody's happy, everybody's tribal. I wake up, I drive to work.
(21:49):
I'm happy every day. I won be careful about trying
to elevate above that. He's in a great spot, best program,
great family. You know, it's a beautiful in the country
to live. He's got control over personnel. And I think
the bigger picture is Laker fans struggle with this. Don't
confuse big brand with great job. The NBA is not
(22:11):
the NFL. You just can't. It's not baseball where you
can just buy as much as you want. It's not
football where you can trade almost anybody you want. You've
got a salary cap and you have to have matching
salaries to trade it. They don't have a lot of
draft capital. This is also and I don't think this
can be underscored. Lebron is a lot. In Lebron's prime,
(22:36):
you would put up with anything. He got you to
the finals. He gets you to the plan game. In
the West, and by the way, the West young players,
Jokich is getting better, Ant's getting better, Luca is getting better.
All the Western players, the young stars, Ant, they're all
getting better. Lebron's getting older well. But the brand. This
(22:58):
is not college sports where a Jim Harbaugh or a
Steve Sarkjan or a Kirby Smart can walk into Georgia
and get twenty five first round picks every year. The
Lakers don't have two of their next four first round picks.
So this is a very hard league and the draft
(23:19):
only gives you about eight good players a year. Like
you know, go, this is a bad draft. Draft picks
don't mean anything. This year. People are trying to push
draft picks off. In the NFL, you'll get a bad draft.
Two years ago, it was a week NFL draft. Most
of my executive buddy scouts buddies were like, you run
out of player by late third, early fourth. You're out
(23:41):
of players. Now you can get Puka Nakua. There are gems,
but it wasn't considered a great draft. This was considered
a great draft, But in the NFL you're gonna get
four really good rounds with still gems undrafted, fifth, sixth,
seventh in the NBA. Like this draft, you may be
you may not have a star in it. You may
(24:02):
not have a single star in this draft. So also
when you get in the NBA, when you get a star,
he's nineteen, he's Jalen Green, he doesn't even know how
to play. Detroit Lions get Pine Sewell, Great Day one,
Aiden Hutchison, great year one. You get in football, you
(24:22):
get guys that can play im mediately.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
CJ.
Speaker 1 (24:26):
Stroud stud second half of his first game, Sauce Gardner
lockdown opener, that doesn't happen. I mean, Wemby comes into
the league, he's the best prospect they're saying. Ever, do
you see how many games as Spurs one the same
as the year before without him, And that's the great
(24:46):
player of the future of the NBA. See, you get
an occasional Draymond Green or a Yokitch in the second round, though,
there's a reason I can name him. Half the NFL
is undrafted, so it's a much easier bill. I mean,
oklah Ayloma City has done everything right, everything right for
four years. Everything They've won, every trade they can't beat Dallas,
(25:11):
they can't win a second playoff series, and and Sam
Presty for three to four years has literally just I mean,
think of how good Danny Ainge did in Boston. He
won every trade, it felt like for five years, right,
like everything, and they're still looking for titles, right they
got well they got one?
Speaker 6 (25:31):
Yeah, Well, which is it?
Speaker 1 (25:32):
You are?
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Like, the Lakers don't have two first round draft picks?
Who cares about draft picks? Look at I forget who
with the guests be Tauler was it the Sixers coach?
He was like, listen, Brad Stevens goes out, We're gonna
grab Al Horford.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
Nobody wanted Al Horford.
Speaker 3 (25:43):
We're gonna go get Drew Holliday, Derek White, like you
can find value out there. I know the Celtics built
through the draft way back when, but yeah.
Speaker 6 (25:51):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (25:51):
I just's being a little harsh on this Lakers team.
Two years ago, Conference finals, Okay.
Speaker 1 (25:58):
Two years ago. Ad was two years younger. Okay, Lebron
was two years younger. The West, we didn't really have Aunt,
we didn't really worry about Chet Holmgren or SGA. The
West has exploded with young talent there, that's true, and
they're all getting better. I mean, Aunt and Luca are
(26:19):
not getting worse.
Speaker 3 (26:19):
You think Lebron's worried about like young teams.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
I think Lebron should be worried about his ankle. It's
bothered him for three years.
Speaker 6 (26:27):
He sees it. He was all NBA.
Speaker 2 (26:29):
Colin, they're not that far off now, I know.
Speaker 3 (26:33):
I would agree the West is loaded and it's gonna
be difficult, but you get the right coach in there.
I think the most interesting aspect of this Colin, where
do they go to next? Do they go back to
Lebron's guy Reddick or do they say we're gonna go
in another direction, because that will tell a lot about
the future of the Lakers and how they feel about
Clutch and Lebron.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
If they don't go right back to Reddick has got.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
Well, we're gonna have Chris Brussard top of next hour.
That's a very interesting point. Why all of a sudden
did Dan Hurley's name come out of nowhere and now
Jay Wright's name has been That's.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
A hard pivot from Lebron's podcasting buddy J. J.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Reddick. Very interesting.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
You like that, huh?
Speaker 1 (27:13):
I like your Laker take. Yeah, I get Hurley in here.
We'll swalk right into the final. This Laker lift is
a you need a forklift. This is not an easy lift.
There's a lot of ego and a lot of expectations
in La. I think he made the right call.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd weekdays
and nooneaster, not a em pacific.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
Oh here we go, ready to roll, breaking news sirens,
red banners. It's the Herd in LA and the Lakers
have been turned down. According to Adrian Wojanowski. Woj He says,
as swept away as Danny Hurley, the u CON coach
(28:00):
was by the Lakers courtship and vision, he ultimately could
not walk away from a chance to make history and
pursue a third straight NCUBLEA title. Even before the Lakers talks,
Hurley already had a UCON offer to become one of
the highest paid NCUBLEA coaches and those talks continue. So
(28:24):
my read into this, because Woesh has been talking to
Hurley directly. Here's my read on it. There's a lot
in this. So it starts with as swept away as
Hurley was by the Lakers, courtship and vision. Hurley's complimenting
the Lakers. He doesn't want to burn bridges. He wants
(28:44):
everybody to know he was blown away. Their vision was extradinary.
Then there's the butt he couldn't walk away from history.
They also add in, hey, hey, we weren't using you
to get he had a raise. Even before Lakers talks,
Hurley had a Yukon offer in the bag. So this
(29:08):
is a way for Hurley to say, I was.
Speaker 2 (29:11):
Blown away by this job.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
I already had an offer on the table from Yukon.
I couldn't walk away from history. Now I don't have
a problem with that. That's how you do it. Thank you.
I'm blown away by your vision. What an opportunity. I
was not using you. I had another offer on the table.
(29:36):
My take is he flew home. You know his kids
were like, yeah, Disneyland, Los Angeles. His wife's like, I
don't know anybody out there. Uh, I don't know. I
don't have any friends out there. I'm never gonna see
my husband. You're on the road the whole time. And
he came back, he talked to friends, he wasn't sure.
He went to a Billy Joel concert. Is there anything
(29:58):
that feels more New York in the summer and fall,
the Yankee game and a Billy Joel concert. He probably
went to vote again. If you offered them this in February,
if he just got knocked out of the tournament in March,
it's June, he's got a title. It's a Billy Joel concert.
You know, you're hanging out with family. That's a hard
(30:22):
that's a hard pivot to go exit stage left to
the West coast. So I didn't think he'd take it.
I thought there was a chance I wouldn't have been shocked,
but it just didn't feel like the time. Now, I
do think there is an argument that strike when the
iron is hot, it's they'll be an Elite eight team.
(30:44):
You know, winning it, you cross your fingers. Chris Bruce
Haard now joins US Live. So we thought, if you
don't announce it within like a day of being offered something,
you know you're probably going back to your bosses, your wife,
your whatever. Are you surprised he turned it down?
Speaker 9 (31:06):
Brew No, Now, when you see the numbers, six years seventy,
I said last week, if I'm Dan Hurley, I'm looking
at the Lakers like I want fourteen to fifteen million
per year. Now Moni Williams makes thirteen and he's the
fourth highest paid coach in the league, and obviously he's
struggling with Detroit. So I think fourteen or fifteen is
(31:28):
justified for like seven years one hundred which sounds crazy,
but seven years one hundred million gives you the type
of security that you would need to coach Lebron and
Anthony Davis.
Speaker 6 (31:42):
They're veterans, they're setting their ways.
Speaker 9 (31:45):
Hurley wants to come in say this is how we're
doing it, this is the program.
Speaker 6 (31:49):
Right.
Speaker 9 (31:49):
They wanted to build something like Boston with Brad Stevens
and Oklahoma City with Mark Dagnall that Dan Presty that
they're building a program, and that was the post Lebron thing.
But you gotta get him through the Lebron in ad years.
So I thought it would have taken something like that,
and to be honest, the Lakers should have went there.
Speaker 6 (32:08):
Now.
Speaker 9 (32:08):
I know they're not one of the wealthiest ownership groups,
but remember twenty years ago. Twenty years ago, they offered
coach k eight million a year, which twenty years ago
was more than eleven and a half million now, And
so I think that's what it would have taken. That's
where Hurley would have won it for the security and Colin.
Speaker 6 (32:30):
Look. I talked to people once this broke.
Speaker 9 (32:32):
I talked to some people around the league that theorized
they were speculating, but they thought, eh, this might be
something where Hurley kind of you know, he's got leverage
to get a bigger contract from Yukon.
Speaker 6 (32:46):
And it looks like that's absolutely what's gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Listen, I said this earlier. Minnesota's got a rising star,
Dallas has a star, Sacramento's got a star, you know, Minnesota, Denver,
forget the fact the Celtics have two young stars. You
start looking around the league and on any given night,
if Lebron or a d don't play your guys, Austin
(33:12):
Reeves your as your number one playmaker. I mean, he'll
be your number one player. And I look at it
and I think, this is not the NFL. It's not baseball.
You got a salary cap. It's not the NFL where
you can trade anybody almost any time. You gotta make
salaries match. I think it's a long road out for
the Lakers. I don't think they're right around the corner,
(33:34):
do you no.
Speaker 9 (33:37):
I mean, lebron is still obviously great. Ad Is is
a great player. But that will get you about, you know,
middle of the pack as far as playoff teams.
Speaker 6 (33:48):
In the Western Conference.
Speaker 9 (33:49):
And you're right, Oklahoma City's just going to be better
next year, Minnesota is going to be better, Dallas will
be better next year. That's not even to mention a
few other teams like New Orleans which is coming up.
Speaker 6 (34:00):
So they they it's a tough situation.
Speaker 9 (34:03):
And that's why if you're Hurley, you would have wanted
the security.
Speaker 6 (34:07):
Look, if it's.
Speaker 9 (34:09):
JJ Reddick or James Barrego or somebody like that, if
they go out in the first or second round in
the next two years, Colin, which is very plausible, right,
that might even be generous. Yeah, all right, it's a
good chance Reddick or Barrego might get fired, right, Okay,
But if you're Dan Hurley with his cachet, his name,
(34:30):
his resume, and if you had that type of contract,
you would survive that. And then now it's time for
the rebuild and let's develop this program. So again, that's
why I think that's the type of package it would
have taken to get Hurley and now it's gonna be
interesting because you know, there are rumblings that you know,
(34:51):
Anthony Davis has a relationship with Barrego and that would
be his preference.
Speaker 6 (34:56):
Those are rumblings. There's talk about should.
Speaker 9 (34:58):
They go after Jay Wright, who you talk about the
next pat Riley.
Speaker 6 (35:02):
He certainly looks the part. So maybe you do that
in LA.
Speaker 9 (35:05):
But it'll be interesting and Reddick, now Reddick went from
the number one guy to and afterthought, is he back
to being the number one guy?
Speaker 6 (35:14):
Is gonna be interested in how this plays out?
Speaker 1 (35:16):
You know, it's really interesting. It's the Lakers are like
the Cowboys. It's viewed as a great job. But if
Jerry's controlling things, you have to pay dak fifty eight
million a year and a great job, it's a good job,
right Like the brand can't be bigger than your reality.
Unlike college. In college, you can recruit your back the
(35:36):
transfer portal. You can recruit your way back after one class.
You can get thirty guys in totally rebuild the roster.
The j Wright rumor came out. We both love Jay.
I talked to him recently. Very happy with broadcasting, really
into it. A he's a driven guy, but he's not
(35:58):
an obsessed guy. Family guy. What do you make of
the Jay Wright stuff? Well, what am I supposed to
make of that? You're out of East? What are you here?
Speaker 9 (36:06):
Well, yeah, that's a great point. And he he seems
perfectly content with where he's at. And you know, you
get to stay around the game, you're respected, you're making
good money, and you don't have the pressure right and
you talk about pressure, he Villanova, you didn't. It wasn't
(36:27):
the same pressure some of the some other programs, even
though he had obviously built him into a powerhouse. The
Lakers would be you're stepping right into the pressure cooker.
And I don't know my doubt, I doubt that he
wants to do that. But if I'm the Lakers, I'm
reaching out because I think he could be a great
(36:49):
NBA coach uh and certainly has the resume that can
rival Hurleis and it'd be a good hire.
Speaker 6 (36:56):
But it might not be the time for him either.
You know, some.
Speaker 9 (37:00):
Guys would look at this like, you know, it's you
could look at it, Colin like like Hurley, if he
comes in for another NBA job, is it gonna be
as good as the Lakers. Yeah right, you said it earlier.
Strike while the iron is hot, your next offer could
be from Charlotte.
Speaker 6 (37:19):
Or some other bad team.
Speaker 9 (37:21):
This look, you know, so there was an argument for that,
but obviously he's contenting Connecticut.
Speaker 6 (37:26):
I throw this out to Colin.
Speaker 9 (37:28):
You know, college win's basketball is not what it used
to be. Right, fifteen years ago, it was huge. Ten
years ago, it was huge. Now it is not that
big anymore. It doesn't capture the public's imagination the way
it used to. I thought that also could play in
the Hurley going to the Lakers, but obviously he chose
(37:49):
to stay put.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
Hey one other thought. I want to talk Celtics for
a second. So Jalen Brown won the Eastern Conference Final MVP.
He could win the final MVP. Tatum's doing a lot,
but he's not shooting well, and it's sort of you know,
there's always been this kind of soft tribal feeling on him.
The people who like him love him. The people like
(38:11):
me who like him think they're reservations. I think Jalen's
mora alpha, more aggressive. You're here and talking during the timeouts.
I feel like Jalen's the leader. But I do think
Tatum's more naturally gifted, but Jalen's more the verbal guy,
the aggressive guy. What do you make of his finals
like Jason Tatum's finals? Do you think less? What do
(38:32):
you make of what you've seen?
Speaker 9 (38:35):
I respect him because he's not letting his shot, the
fact that he's struggling with his shot ruining a lot
of big scores. Kyrie's struggling with his shot. He's not
doing much else. He's can't. Kyrie's not a great defender,
big enough to rebound, but Tatum's rebounding, leading in assists
(38:55):
eight and a half a game. Obviously shooting poorly, but
I love the fact that he's like, I'm not going
to let my shot ruin my game.
Speaker 6 (39:05):
It's about the team. Let's go out and get the W.
Speaker 9 (39:08):
So I've gained respect for him in that regard, and I.
Speaker 6 (39:13):
Still think he's their best player.
Speaker 9 (39:15):
Leads them even these playoffs where he hasn't shot well.
Colin leading them in points, rebounds and assists per game,
has led him in scoring the last five years, and
led them in points and rebounds the last two years. Now,
he might not be their leader, as you said with Jalen,
he might not be their.
Speaker 6 (39:33):
Most clutch guy. In fact, statistically we.
Speaker 9 (39:36):
Know he is it, But as far as their overall
best player, I still would give him that, but I
think it's closer than we thought between him and Jayleen.
Speaker 1 (39:44):
Good stuff. Bruce stopped by. You know you always willing
to just put that tie on. He always like this
is what Bruceard looks like when he goes to breakfast
on Saturday morning. He is a well dressed man. You
know how much I love you, Brue. Appreciate you stopping
by late. Notice
