Speaker 2 (00:19):
This is the Best of the Herd with Colin Cowver
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
All right, here we go. We have breaking news. It
is a Friday in Los Angeles. It's the Herd. Wherever
you may be and however you may be listening. Jmack
the Silver and Black Gun a little more silver. Pete
Carroll is the new coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Ageism
(00:48):
had a rough day today. And by the way, that
division now is incredible. Harball, Peyton, Nanny Reid and Pete Carroll.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Yeah, they'll calling it the AARP Division because everybach as
old as hell.
Speaker 4 (01:00):
I like it got me frong.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
By the way, Liam Cohnan, Jacksonville, Pete Carroll, They're gonna
gobble up assistance and coordinators. I'll get to the Cowboys
in a second. Every day you wait to hire a coach,
you're losing out on the best assistance. So just think
about that. There's a finite number of elite NFL assistants,
(01:24):
make decisions, make them quickly. And the Raiders have chosen
Pete Carroll. He's an adult in the organization needs one.
I like the choice. I said this. I had no
problem if he went to Chicago. I thought he was
a good fit there. I think he would have been
a good fit in Dallas. I think he's an excellent
fit with the Raiders. They need stability, they need culture,
(01:46):
and Pete provides that. And in a division where you
have to face Andy Reid twice, Jim Harbaught twice, Sean
Payton twice, pretty good bet that a coordinator who's never
been a head coach just won't do. And Pete's history
is he is good with young quarterbacks. He was good
with young Russell Wilson. He was good with young ger
(02:08):
Drew Bledsoe. He was tremendous with a young Mark Sanchez
or a young Carson Palmer. So this is a coach.
The Raiders are a total rebuild. They don't have a staff,
they don't have a front office, they don't have a quarterback.
They have Max Crosby in a couple of weapons. So
this is lay in concrete. Forget about the master bathroom
(02:29):
and a great kitchen. This is laying concrete. This is
foundation up. I think Pete Carroll has proven. I've talked
to players throughout the years and coaches that know Pete
one of the most organized coaches in the league. When
the Patriots face the Seahawks in that Super Bowl, it
was a chess match, and Belichick later said that he
(02:49):
likes facing older, experienced coaches.
Speaker 4 (02:51):
It was a chess match.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Belichick won that chess match, but it went down to
actually that interception the final couple plays, and I think
Pete is here's the thing with Pete. There are things
like retaining kind of average coaches too long that I'd
criticize him for, or maybe not in Seattle, sensing the
urgency at quarterback when you're in a division with McVeigh
(03:14):
and Kyle Shanahan, and you know, we can nitpick all
these coaches, but you know, is this somebody that took
a Seattle franchise that was just swimming in mediocrity, took
a usc program swimming in mediocrity, even a job that
didn't work for him, New England. It's not like they
fell off a cliff. I mean they replaced Bill Parcells.
They got you know, one win lass one win last
(03:36):
one win less. So I like Pete for the job.
I don't think I don't think age is a factor
with him. I think he's the best available coach on
the market. This is an organization that needed a grown up,
needs stability, and needs culture. And as we look for
our TV audience, these jobs are getting Phil Bear's Ben Johnson.
He's working on filling a staff. The Jaguars, Liam Cohen,
(03:58):
the Jets, Aaron Glenn, Mike, Pete Carroll. Only the Cowboys
and the Saints don't have a coach. And that's why
I want to segue to what's happening in Dallas. This
is amazing. Apparently Jerry Jones the Brian Schottenheimer move, according
to a report this morning. Yeah, that's a that wasn't
Jerry's idea, that was floated by his sons. His sons
(04:22):
really liked the idea, and Jerry's not down with it.
He's more down with Dion Sanders. That's probably not going
to happen too. There are some things in your life
you can take time with like let's say buying solar
panels for your house. You went thirty one years without it.
You can put it off until next week, or maybe marriage.
If you're a young lad, you're thirty one, thirty two.
(04:43):
It's a big decision, a lot of fish in the sea.
Take your time on that one. And then there are
a couple of other things you have to act urgently,
Like let's say you cut off your arm with a
table saw. You might want to get to the er quickly,
or hiring a head coach. Remember, in every industry in America,
there is a finite number of elite, and it's I
(05:05):
don't care if it's realtors, politicians, or football coaches.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
It is about ten percent.
Speaker 1 (05:11):
Right now, we got about six great coaches, and six
great quarterbacks, and six great coordinators, and six great owners,
even the billionaires, about five or six in the league
that are really truly non meddling an elite. So here
are the Cowboys, Pete Carroll working on a staff. Vrabels
got his filled out, Aaron Glenn, Liam Cohen. These guys
(05:32):
are filling out their staffs. So Dallas is now going
to get the third and fourth choice on O line coaches,
and there are not many on line coaches in the
league that you even know the name to, because at
one point Jimmy Johnson told me, at any one time,
the NFL's got four great offensive line coaches. And there's
a reason you know the names of the best offensive
(05:54):
line coaches in college because there's so few of them,
and they're all getting They're either now all employed or
gonna get employed by Aaron Glenn, Pete Carroll, Liam Cohen
in the next week.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
So this needs urgency.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
And the Cowboys have only interviewed three people in person.
And remember Roberts Craft, owner of the Patriots, has six
rings recently, how did they fire drawed mail? The season
(06:25):
was over and before Mayo got to the locker room,
man of press release, we're moving on. By the next
day they contacted Mike Rabel. They put their name in
the running for Mike Rabel. Think of the Cowboys. I
looked this up this morning. So January fifth, the Cowboys
played their last game on January fifth. The next day
(06:46):
was my birthday, should be a national holiday. But January
fifth they played their last game. It took them eight
days to figure out McCarthy's not staying it has been
a huh eleven days since then, and they're like, hey,
what do you guys think of Pete Carroll? I just
(07:07):
got hired in Las Vegas? All right, let's cross him
off the list.
Speaker 4 (07:11):
Oh boy.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
In my entire life, every year there's seven or eight
coaches that get fired, and there's always one great candidate.
Last year it was Harbaugh, this year it was Rabel,
and then there's always like two or three really good candidates,
Pete Carroll, Ben Johnson, and those guys like Ben Johnson,
there's always one or two hot shot coordinators.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
One will flourish, one won't work.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
So one of the things about like Mike McCarthy, and
if I'm the Saints, now, I go hire Mike McCarthy
because you know he'll be somewhat successful and Mike Rabel
may not win a trophy, but he'll be somewhat successful.
And you know, Pete Carroll will be somewhat successful with
the hot shot whiz kids the coordinators.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
And Ben Johnson's a very good coach. It's Chicago.
Speaker 1 (07:59):
Would you be shocked in five years if we're moving
on to another Johnson. I mean, that's just the way
it works in Chicago. But Jerry Jones is gonna do
what he did with Dak Prescott. He's gonna make you
think he's playing poker. He's not showing his hand, and
then you end up paying about forty percent more than
you should. And I mean this morning, you know who
(08:20):
should be excited this morning, Robert Sala. Robert Sala's just
sitting back there. All the good candidates are getting hired.
Robert Sala has unbelievable leverage this morning, unbelievable leverage.
Speaker 4 (08:35):
You gave Dak unbelievable leverage.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
I mean, Sala's sitting there like now, Sola's the number
one candidate with Mike McCarthy. So oh oh, just just
an added note. The Eagles this weekend will play in
their eighth conference championship in twenty five years. Cowboys have
been a nune. By the way, this is Michael Irvin
(08:59):
yesterday on Speak for Yourself, reacting to Brian Schottenneimer potentially
being the Cowboys coach.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
Is he the right coach for the Cowboys?
Speaker 5 (09:06):
No, No, not at all, honestly, honestly, right now, this
is the Cowboys. You need the right coach on the
football field to bring the best out of the team,
but they do believe at the point in the juncture
that the Cowboys are now, you also need the right
coach to raise the morale. I'm a you know, tried
and true Cowboy fan.
Speaker 4 (09:28):
MA morale is down. I know their morale is down.
Speaker 5 (09:32):
So you know, hopefully they're making the decisions understanding all
sides of it. Yeah, we need the right coach. We
need the right coach for everybody on the football field
and off the football field.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Now just think about this.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
Let's say you give it to Brian Schottenheimer. That's a
lower end coach who will now have a lower end
staff because Pete Carroll is gonna gobble up a lot
of the remaining side coaches. And if I was Pete
Carroll this morning, I'm hiring Robert Sala in five minutes
(10:05):
to run my defense. If the Niners don't hire him first,
my first call, Pete Carroll, Get Robert Sala off the market,
get him to Vegas. Now Sala may have options like
the Cowboy job, but now the Cowboys are going to
get a second tier head coach and a third tier staff.
Brian Schottenneimer is considered a weak higher meaning if he
(10:28):
would have been hired a month ago, you would have
struggled to build a great staff. Coaches know who can coach,
like Pete Carroll should be able to build pretty good staff.
Vega's easy place to get people. When you get Ben
Johnson in Chicago is considered a hot coach. Caleb William
they'll build a nice staff in Chicago. Mike Frable New England,
Vrabel's good, he'll build a better than average staff. Gerrod
(10:50):
Mayo did not build a great staff in New England
because in the coaching community people were like, I don't
know if it's going to work.
Speaker 4 (10:57):
Year later didn't.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
So now the Cowboys are going to have a second coach,
maybe a third tier, and the staff could be a
mess because Lean Comb, who got the Jags job again
considered very young and very sharp. He's gonna my guess
is he and Pete Cohen's gonna gobble up the best
offensive staff over the next thirty six hours. And Aaron
Glenn and Pete Carroll are gonna gobble up all the
(11:20):
great defensive guys they know in the league.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
And what does that leave the Cowboys? That's crazy. What's
going on in Dallas or what's not going on?
Speaker 1 (11:29):
January fifth season ended eight days later, McCarthy left eleven
days since then three live interviews, and the story was
they they were interested in Pete Well he just signed
in Vegas. Wow, so j Mack blazing three. I got
(11:50):
a couple of picks and and and over under bet
in one hour from now. Jordan Schultz gonna be joining
me in twenty five minutes on. Some of this coaching
stuff is a lot, a lot of movement. I think
Pete Carroll's a good spot.
Speaker 3 (12:05):
Yeah, who's his quarterback?
Speaker 6 (12:07):
Again?
Speaker 1 (12:08):
They're gonna draft one, so good news is they have
a top or are they picking six seven something like that?
Speaker 3 (12:12):
They're gonna miss out on the two stars cam Ward
and Shador.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Let me float this to you. What if this is
from a friend, I gotta give him credit.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
You know how Mayo was kind of a stop gap,
and then they got Rabel in New England. What if
Schottenheimer's a stopgap for someone else in a year that
they just can't get Now, Dion Belichick, do you think
Schottenheimer would be hired as a stopgap?
Speaker 1 (12:35):
Hate, Well, there's no question unless they get Sola, who
I think is pretty good candidate. Let's say at Schottenheimer.
That's a four or five win team. So you get
a great draft pick in a strong quarterback lay.
Speaker 4 (12:46):
You just kind of punked on the season.
Speaker 3 (12:47):
I know that no organization thinks like that, but hey,
we just need to get a guy in the building,
stabilize things. We realize the market's going to be better
next year for a coach.
Speaker 4 (12:56):
We bungled it this year. I'm sure Jerry would admit.
Speaker 1 (12:58):
That, right, Yeah, Well, I Thinkallas has always been They've
been in quicksand for the last several years. So they're
just slightly above average. So you get you know, you
don't get a great draft pick, you don't get a
terrible one, but you know you're kind of making the playoffs.
So you're down around eighteen twenty, you know, and it's
like it's hard, especially in a week draft. This year, Dallas,
Dallas needs to make some moves. I'll say it again,
(13:20):
I'd consider moving Micah Parsons getting the second number one,
building that roster up because I don't think you're going
to get a great coach, I mean, overpaid quarterback, even
if your restructures deal and a subpar coach and a
week staff in a division would now emerging superstar Jaden
Daniels and the stacked Eagles.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
And the Giants are not going to stay down long.
There's a potential for them to come out. I know
you're not interested in the Giants, but they're not going
to stay down forever, right right, Cowboys might be last
place in that division.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
That's if I picked today, that's where I pick them.
I'd pick them last.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and Noone Easter not a em Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
Oh so this weekend you have Commanders and Eagles. Get
to that in about fifteen minutes. Also you have Bill's
Chiefs and j Mack has been saying this, this is
kind of a running theme on this show since week six,
is that Kansas City's getting favorable calls from the officials,
never using the word rig but tiptoeing around it. So
(14:24):
I thought i'd add some context today. If you look
at the Chiefs playoff penalties in twenty twenty one, yes,
it is very very clear the Chiefs have had only
three hundred and nineteen penalty yards opponents five hundred and
forty one In playoff penalties in the last four years.
That is something I wanted to throw this out the
(14:45):
second New England Patriots dynasty with another great coach. Interesting,
the New England Patriots ranked third fewest penalties per game
at third fewest penalty yards in that span including the
plus like the Chief, It's almost if the best coach
team in the league had fewer penalties. I'd like to
add this if I may, did you know the fewest
(15:07):
penalties by any team this year? The best young coach
Sean McVay and the Rams, so Andy Reid, Belichick and
Sean McVay Looney coincidence, Arguably the three best coaches have
the fewest penalties. Penalies are negative plays. Good coaches avoid them,
(15:33):
just like good quarterbacks Holmes Josh Allen don't throw as
many picks. Justin Herbert had a bad playoff game, but
threw almost none during the regular season. And great coaches
also separate themselves in many forms, schemes, game plans, situational excellence,
(15:54):
developing young players, avoiding penalties and mistakes. By the way,
the most penalized team this year.
Speaker 4 (16:02):
The Jets.
Speaker 1 (16:03):
The least penalized team this year the Rams one had
an interim coach, one had the best young coach. So
in fact, since Sean McVeigh has joined the NFL as
a head coach, the Rams are the least penalized team.
That's because it's a big market. Okay, whatever, I give up,
(16:25):
so I know you conspiracy theorists are are tiptoeing around
rig The Chiefs are really good and really well coached.
And oh, by the way, there were two teams in
the league this year that had just one delay of
game penalty, Andy Reid's team and Sean mcvay's team. Both
(16:45):
the Giants and the Jets had ten pluths. So again,
Julian Edelman also brought up this point. It's Patrick Mahomes.
He's the face of the league. They do want to
protect faith piece of the league. Maybe it's subconscious. Here's
Edelman this week.
Speaker 7 (17:05):
I remember being on the other side seeing a late
hit on Brady or a roughing the passer on Brady,
where I'm like, eh, probably wasn't there, But it's Tom Brady.
He was already had five Super Bowls. You guys got
to understand the situation.
Speaker 1 (17:23):
Years ago, when Michael Jordan was in his prime and
dominating the league. Michael absolutely, and I can say this
about Magic Johnson overwhelmingly got the favorable whistle. They were intimidating,
they were assets. It didn't come from the league office.
It was kind of like knowing the temperature of the
(17:44):
room and when when it's a go either way play
on mahomes on a helmet hit and you don't get
a review it or challenge it. And the league has
told you on quarterback hits upstairs, win in doubt, call
it out. My opinion, that's as we showed you Monday,
that's in the rule book. Winned out quarterback hits ruffing
(18:06):
the passer, call it tie in baseball goes to the runner,
in football, goes to the penalty flag on quarterback rubbing
the passer.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays

We talk about everything life, sports relationships, what's going on
in the world. We have a lot of fun talking
about the stories behind the stories in the world of
sports and pop culture, stories that well, other shows don't
seem to have the time to discuss. And the fact
that we've been friends for the last twenty years and
still work together. I mean that says something, right.
Speaker 6 (18:51):
So check us out.
Speaker 8 (18:52):
We like to get you involved too, take your phone calls,
chop it up. As they say, I'd say the most
interactive show on Fox Sports Radio, maybe.

The most interactive show on planetar.

Rich wherever you get your podcasts, and of course on
social media.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
That's Covino and Rich.
Speaker 4 (19:16):
And here we go.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Let's blaze it up up. It's Collins Blazing five sponsored
by Draft Games, Commanders and Eagles.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
I like Philadelphia minus six and the over forty seven
and a half. The Eagles have won fourteen of fifteen
games and they're virtually unbeatable when Aj Brown's in the lineup.
They averaged an NFL best one hundred and ninety three
rushing yards over the second best team in the league. Right,
(19:47):
that was number one in the league over the last
fifteen games. Okay, they have no giveaways in four straight games.
So their rush offense the last fifteen games, yards per game,
percentage attempts a game, this is what they do. It's
not a quarterback led team. It is a run game
led team. The Commander's third straight road playoff game, they
(20:08):
allowed in the win twelve big plays versus Detroit. No
rookie's ever been to a super Bowl, and their rush
defense leaves a lot to be desired. Thirtieth. Okay, so
you're talking about a team that is road weary, that
is outclassed physically. Their weakness is the Philadelphia strength. Is
(20:31):
Jaden Daniels capable of performing Maggot magic a backdoor cover. Absolutely,
But last week I wouldn't touch Detroit Philadelphia. I said,
stay away, don't bet it. It worries me because of
Detroit's defense. Philadelphia's defense, boy, they hit on draft picks
and that secondary it's excellent. The Washington Commanders are missing
(20:53):
their best lineman and interior linemen against Jalen Carter potential nightmare,
Rams who had a rookie centers struggled with this at
the end of that game. I like Philadelphia to win
thirty four to twenty four. I think it could get
a little ugly. I'll take the over as well comfortably.
(21:14):
Bills and Chiefs the wise guys like Kansas City, but
I've been on the Bills for a month to win
the Super Bowl. The winner of this game, in my opinion,
hoist the Lombardi Trophy. They have a winning record against
the Chiefs, and Sean McDermott has been there. Did you
know that in nine meetings they've won five. They leave
the NFL in turnover differential. This team is different. Like
(21:35):
Kansas City. They don't beat themselves fewest giveaways eight in
a single season in league history, twelve games this year
without a turnover. Their defense also may not be elite, right,
you don't think it's elite, but they led the NFL
with thirty five takeaways. Because you're usually trailing and have
to play catchup and are kind of predictable. Josh Allen
(21:58):
in his playoff career, do not conus in with Lamar Jackson.
He has been excellent again. Nine games against Mahomes total,
he's won five in Kansas City.
Speaker 4 (22:09):
I think the gig is up.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Even if you go to that Houston game, they only
had two hundred and twelve yards offense. They only average
four yards of play. Very Travis Kelsey dependent. I like
the Bills receiving corps better. I like their running back
room better. I like their offensive line better. I think
quarterback is a wash. Kansas City's got the better defense.
(22:31):
Josh Allen has a way of making great defenses reducing
them to so so I'm going to take the Bills
to win a close game outright. You know it's going
to be close, drama filled twenty eight to twenty seven.
I believe whoever wins this game wins the Super Bowl
DraftKings sportsbook. This week, new customers bet five bucks to
(22:54):
get two hundred and bonus bets instantly.
Speaker 4 (22:56):
The promo code is heard at sign.
Speaker 2 (23:00):
Up one more Heard. The Herd streams twenty four hours
a day, seven days a week within the iHeartRadio app,
search Herd to listen live or on demand whenever you like.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
Fifteen years in the NFL, multiple time Pro Bowler, Heisman
Winter College Hall of.
Speaker 4 (23:16):
Famer and now and now.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
High school football coach about to become high school football
coaching legend. His son's the quarterback and he is joining
us now live right now, Carson Palmer in his office
right now, around the clock. So you were at USC
and then all of a sudden, your first coach, Paul Hackett,
doesn't work. Here comes Pete Carroll. So you're a young guy.
(23:41):
That Raider roster's got a lot of young guys. What
was your first impression of Pete Carroll? You had a
great year, I mean you Pete kind of took you
to new heights. But give me your first impressions of
Pete and what really resonated with you.
Speaker 9 (24:00):
Energy he brought to the program. Uh, you know, there
was there was such a vision that was laid out
in front of us from the jump, and there was
a clear vision. He knew what he wanted, he knew
what he expected, We knew as players what to expect
from him and what he expected from us, which is
just at the end of the day, what you want,
(24:20):
you know, when when you're the Raiders, you just want
some stability. It has been a very unstable environment for
a very long time, and he instantly gives you that stability,
that that pro that that organization needs.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
When you're coaching in high school and you've had good coaches,
you've there's been a lot of Got Bruce Arians, Pete Carroll.
What is the one thing you will take from Pete
as a coach, the one discipline, the one culture center
that you'll take from Pete.
Speaker 9 (24:50):
There's not There's not one thing. I had a chance
to spend, you know, five or six hours meeting with
Pete before I took this, this coaching job at Santa
Margari to high school, and I took. I took twelve things.
I still am texting him asking him, you know, certain things,
how to run this, how to do this. So he's
not a one thing guy. He doesn't do one thing well.
(25:12):
Brings tremendous energy, he's super matures, he's got success, so
he's got credibility. But the you know, the things that
I look and that I'm hanging my hat on are
you know, there were simple rules, but Pete isn't you
know a ton of rules. You know, super disciplinarian. You know,
there's a handful of rules. They all make a lot
(25:34):
of sense. They're really easy to follow. And if you
can't follow those rules, then you probably shouldn't be on
his team or really any team. But there's not one
thing that when I think back about my experience playing
with him, you know, I learned. I learned how to
be a leader. I learned how important it is to
focus on the ball and how important is it is
to go get the ball on defense. He always talked
(25:56):
about that, securing it, never giving it away, and attacking
it on defense. He talked about respect, respect for your team,
respect for the officials, respect for your opponent. He was,
he's he's the greatest coach that that I ever had
the chance to play for. He's a future Hall of Famer.
He's everything you want to coach. And the Raiders organization, Uh,
(26:18):
this is an exciting day obviously for the future. You know,
I know it's a three year deal, maybe a four
year deal, but he's just he gives you instant credibility, stability, maturity,
and he's been there and done that. And what he
did in Seattle was amazing, going from you know, the
Matt Hasselbeck sewn Alexander, creating the late Legion of Boom,
(26:38):
developing the legion Legion of Boom, being there long enough
to see those guys leave and move on, and then
still getting the playoffs, you know, with with Russell Wilson
at quarterback and Beast Mode in the backfield, and really
reinventing that team after the legion of Boom, you know,
to to bringing along Geno Smith. I mean you, I
(26:59):
don't think he gets the credit he deserves for the
success and the stability that he brought to Seattle.
Speaker 1 (27:04):
You played in a conference championship game, NFC Championship game.
Go back to that moment, Jaden Daniels, Jalen Hurts now
been in a couple, Mahome's been in a lot, Josh
Allen's experience. Jaden Daniels, this is his first. That was
your first? You tell me anxious? Did you worry about
(27:27):
like being so amped up? That can affect sort of
you know, your mechanics. Go back to your NFC championship game.
Speaker 9 (27:33):
What was it like, Yeah, Jaden's got nothing to lose.
I mean, he's playing with house money, all the pressures
on Philly, He's you know, he's got all the hype.
You know, everybody's gonna be focused on him. Obviously, that
entire defense that entire stadium. The energy is going to
be electric. But man, he's out there playing as a
rookie thinking I've got a whole career ahead of me
(27:54):
to get back here. I'm just gonna let it loose,
cut it loose. And that's the one thing when you
watch him play, he doesn't really he doesn't play within
a mold. He plays outside the system a lot, which
is really unique, and a lot of guys don't have
success doing that. He is just playing with so much
natural instincts and his first one of his best attributes,
and one of the things he's looking to do first
(28:16):
is take off and run with the ball. He's such
a good running runner with the ball. And it's not
because he's a four to four guy. It's because he
has the ability to get down and cut and change
direction and make people miss. So I think in his
mind right now, he cannot wait for this game. He
knows all the pressures on Philly. They're at home, they've
been there, they're expected to continue to play through this
(28:36):
game and into the super Bowl. And he's playing with
a young team, a first year head coach, in his
first year as a quarterback. I think he is excited
I think he's going to let it loose and have
an amazing game and possibly knock off Philly and head
to the super Bowl as a rookie and be the
first to ever do it.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
You had a year in Arizona. It's still the best
year quarterbacks ever had there. You threw for forty six
hundred yards thirty five touchdowns. The history of the Chicago Bears,
they've never had a quarterback equal the one year your
greatest year. It's the greatest year Arizona's ever had for
a quarterback in a season. You also, I think you
were the first quarterback to throw for four thousand yards
(29:14):
for three different teams, so you had success in multiple places.
All that said, Chicago has struggled with quarterback. They've never
had a four thousand yard quarterback. They've never had thirty
touchdown passes. You did it all sorts of teams. So
obviously that's a lot of you because you did it
with different people. Maybe some of it is the weather,
maybe some of it is it's always had a defensive culture,
(29:36):
but there is something to unlock here. You know Caleb
Williams pretty well as a former USC guy. How does
Ben Johnson? This is a defensive culture.
Speaker 4 (29:47):
It really is.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
You think Bears, you think defense. If you were taking
over Caleb Williams in Chicago cold weather rough outdoor games,
Are there any secrets to getting over the hump for
a historic franch that can't get over the hump at
that position?
Speaker 9 (30:04):
Yeah, I mean a historic franchise that hasn't had success
at that position, but they've never had the athlete or
the player and the competitor that Caleb is at that position.
So it's the first time that that organization has had
somebody like him. You combine him with what with what
you know? You watch Jared Goff do who Jared Goff
(30:24):
is an incredible player, but not the athlete that Caleb is.
So I just when I first heard that that coach
Johnson was getting the job, Caleb's got the blueprint. He
can sit there and watch hours and hours and hours
of film of watching Caleb, I'm sorry, watching Jared Goff
run that system. And then you combine the addition of
all the attributes that Caleb has that Jared doesn't have
(30:45):
within his his repertoire. I think the sky's the limit.
I think Ben is phenomenal what he's done. Some of
the He's coming up with concepts that that people have
not seen or run in the NFL. There's some things
he's doing in against Mandy Defense in the play Action game.
They're route combinations that I just haven't seen before, which
is really rare. A lot of stuff in the NFL
(31:07):
gets recycled and then it trickles down through college football.
But Ben is an innovator. He's coming up with new stuff.
And like I said, I mean, Chicago's got a quarterback
and an athlete back there that they've never seen run
out on that field in their uniform and their helmet.
So I think it's a perfect combination, and I think
the blueprint is right there for Caleb. It's so nice
(31:27):
when you get a new head coach that comes in
and you can watch that system on film and study
that playbook and study the cut ups that he's going
to be studying of Detroit and Jared Goff doing it,
and I just think that's going to energize Caleb. Caleb's
going to go.
Speaker 8 (31:40):
Man.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
Yeah, Carson Palmer, so you've been coaching now a month.
He's coaching his son at a very storied high school
program in southern California. Harder than you thought easier. Can
you give us an up? Can you give us an
update on your coaching? Oh, we lost him, We lost
Carson Palmer. Well, I appreciate it. Breakdown in connectivity. It's
the world we live in.
Speaker 4 (32:04):
Good stuff.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
Carson Palmer fifteen years, three time pro bowler. He didn't
play his our first year. John Kitten, I think was
ahead of him for a while, But I think what
Jade and Daniel's doing is all time stuff.
