You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Oh, it just became a very very interesting Thursday in
the Herd. We love breaking news on this show. Greg
Cosel one hour from Now talk about the NFL playoffs,
but jamac as story and I guess you and I
(00:48):
aren't surprised. I have some questions how it would turn out.
But you know, Jerry Jones was on that show land Man,
and everybody was a marveling what a showman he was,
And who's the ultimate showman? As a football coach?
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Not bad?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
You know.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
I'm only on episode six, so no spoilers for land Man.
I don't want to know what happens yet. But this news,
I don't know what to.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Do with it. Man. Let's not keep people waiting and
holding their breath, Edwarder respected a journalists says regarding Dion Sanders,
Edward says, I'm being told he would certainly accept that
if Jerry Jones offered the next cowboy coaching head coaching
gig two him, and that those around Jerry are encouraging
(01:36):
him to pursue it, and that Jones is enamored with
the idea. Well, it would be interesting and splashy. And
they're two showmen, and I think Jerry and Dion have
a lot in common. They're performers. They'll take risks and
if you criticize him, don't come on your show and
talk about it. They don't shy away from risk. They
(01:56):
welcome the spotlight. But Dallas is also too things today
not very good and boring. So this falls in line
with Jerry Jones' personality, which is he likes to be
seen as the man who discovered something. He loved getting
Tony Romo at a discount he was undrafted. He loved
(02:17):
getting Dak Prescott at a discount, right fourth rounder, and
Deon Sanders, who we don't think of as the best
coaching candidate. You'd probably there's a little bit of discovery here,
and I think Jerry loves that Jerry's DNA was an
oil catter. Let's dig and see what we got down there,
(02:39):
and Jerry in the NFL is a little bit like that.
Let's see what we've got here with undrafted Tony Romo
and Deon Sanders as the head coach and Dak Prescott
as a fourth rounder. So I'm I don't know if Deon
Sanders prime time would be a great coach. Let's just
be honest about his college football experience. He went thirteen
(02:59):
and twelve in two years with arguably the best college
quarterback and without an argument, the Heisman Trophy winner who
played both sides of the ball, and in a bad conference,
the Big Twelve. He went in the SEC. He wasn't.
He wasn't even in the Big ten of the ACC.
(03:20):
Is it a Big twelve? Went thirteen and twelve and
he up blown out a lot. And I will sell this,
say this Primetime can sell Primetime, and by proxy he'll
sell Dallas. But salesmanship is huge in college football. That's
seventy five percent of the game. Nick Saban was old,
but he was young in the recruiting trail. He had
(03:41):
energy and juice and swag and Dion's got a lot
of that. But the Cowboys have no camp room and
they're not going to trade Dak so how does he
make him better? And my rule has always been, whenever
you make a coaching move, what rivals say? What do
(04:02):
you think the Philadelphia Eagles are saying this morning about
this story. They're saying, well, Jerry likes the spotlight, so
he'll get the spotlight. They're not saying, oh damn, Vrabel's
going to change that culture or last year, Oh boy,
Jim Harbaugh wins everywhere and really fast, and he's coming
(04:23):
from Michigan. He knows all those college players. There's no
fear in the Philadelphia Eagles executive suite or locker room
today with Dion Sanders. He's a showman who was a
five hundred coach and a bad conference in college. Now
he took over a bad job. He was good for
the sport. I was rooting for him. I think he's fun.
But is Jerry gonna win the spotlight? Sacrificing perhaps winning games?
(04:50):
So Joel Klatt was on the show yesterday who played
at Colorado, who hopes he stays primetime at Colorado? And
he doesn't think necessarily the NFL is a great fit.
Speaker 5 (05:00):
I don't believe that Dallas is somehow a better destination.
In fact, I view it opposite, and I view this
by this is not a Colorado and Dallas thing. This
is also just an NFL versus college football. If you
find the right fit in college football, where you're comfortable
and you can win, even in the Big twelve, you're
(05:21):
going to make a lot more money in the long
run and have a lot more power in the long
run than going to the NFL, because even if the
NFL can pay you more, maybe maybe per year, that's
going to be a short runway and you have very
little to no power.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
I don't think Dallas's issue was a coaching problem. I
think it's a roster problem. It's really top heavy with
a wildly overpaid quarterback and one great playmaker, and the
Cowboys ended up, believe it or not being too good
to get a great draft pick in a really really
okay draft. It's not a bad draft, but there's about
(05:58):
seven to eight special players and Dallas actually McCarthy coached
them up too well, and they don't have one of
those top picks, and it's not a draft and in
my opinion, unless you could get the receiver T mac
from Arizona or a Mason Graham or Carter the edge
rusher from Penn State. I'm not moving up for anybody else.
(06:21):
I don't even I don't even think I'm moving up
for these quarterbacks. And you know Jerry's not getting rid
of his quarterback. So what do you think the Eagles
are saying today? Because I got news for you. Once
Jim Harball was coming to the Chargers, I can guarantee
that people in Kansas City were like, damn, Herbert finally
got a coach. And I can guarantee you in Buffalo
(06:44):
with Mike Vrabel going to New England, you know they're
saying in Buffalo, oh, he'll get that puppy turned around
real fast. We got ourselves, We got ourselves a ball coach.
I think Philly's saying, oh, Jerry likes the spotlight. He's
on land Man and uh and he's got Dion so
he'll get that. Not saying he's gonna fail. But there's
(07:05):
some guarantees in the job search. I thought Vrabel was
one of them this year, and Harball was won last year.
I don't know what you get here, Okay. So it's
interesting you would think as the Kansas City Chiefs try
to do something nobody's done in the NFL. Three straight
Super Bowl wins, they would be kind of intimidating, kind
(07:27):
of daunting. But Sean Payton just said yesterday that when
they went into the playoffs, they were actually more concerned
about Buffalo and that if they could get past Buffalo,
they liked their chances against the Chiefs.
Speaker 6 (07:43):
We're not looking backwards, we're looking ahead, and it starts
with the division, you know, and there's a lot of
confidence in this team. If we could get past that game,
the next game we had to play, we felt real
good about and.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
That next game was going to be Kansas City. So
I think actually Kansas City proves two things, and it's
actually instructive for other teams. It's instructive and they prove
two things. One, you don't have to be great at
everything to win back to back Super Bowls. Kansas City's
receiving corps the last two years, a lot of ham
and eggers. It's just a lot of guys now now
(08:22):
read and mahomes take a D plus group and make
it a C plus group. So it's not terrible. But
you don't have to be great at everything the one
but if you're terrible at anything. Joe Burrows o lines,
you're not winning super Bowls. The one time Mahomes didn't
have his starting offensive tackles in the Super Bowl Super
(08:43):
Bowl fifty five, he got rolled. He had humiliated. The
coaching is too good in the NFL. You do not
have to be great at everything. You can't be terrible
at anything. I mean, there were years Brady didn't have
a great run game, but James White was one of
the best pass catching running backs in the league. So
they may not have had a superstar running back, but
(09:04):
their backs could catch and block and protect. And so
that's the first thing. You do not have to be
great at everything to win super Bowls. Can't be terrible
at anything. And the second thing is you really only
have to be elite at about four or five things.
Head coach, quarterback. You gotta have a dominant defensive person
(09:26):
up front, somewhere edge Chris Jones, Aaron Donald. Gotta have
a dominant defensive lineman. You have to have an above
average offensive line and some reliable playmaker. It can be
Saquon Barkley, it can be Gronk and Julian Edelman. It
could be a tight end, a slot receiver. You have
to have a third down go to guy for the quarterback.
(09:46):
They're not all going to be as good as Jamar Chase,
but Puka Nakua, Saquon Barkley, you know, Travis Kelsey. You
got to have one of those. So the Colts in
the seat Hawks, by the way, I think you have
excellent rosters, but they're not great at key positions. And
(10:07):
so Kansas City fools you into thinking this is not
a great team. They're great where you need to be
in the NFL. So they're very instructive. They don't intimidate you.
But if you go back and look at New England,
they are Kansas City. Great coach, great quarterback, always above
(10:28):
average offensive lines, always had somebody that could get after
the quarterback. They often led the NFL in hurries. And
there was one reliable playmaker often too, it was James
White at a receiver spot out of the backfield. It
was Gronk for a couple of years, it was Randy Moss.
It was often Welker or Edelman. There was always one
guy Tom knew he had on third down, and that
(10:50):
is Travis Kelcey. So you know, it's like the restaurant menu.
Not everything has to be great. Get stuff off that
that's terrible, and you've got to be good at two
or three things in and out. Don't like their fries,
burgers and shakes. They crush. So I think a lot
of people look at Kansas City and doubt them, but
they're a very instructive team. Taking that baton from New England.
(11:15):
So Dion Sanders to the Dallas Cowboys, Jmack, your initial
reaction Primetime wants it if it's offered. Jerry is enamored
with it and may offer it. You think it comes
to fruition.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
I mean, you gotta respect ed Werder. He's been doing this,
covering the team for a long time. I just have
a hard time seeing Don doing this. Is it you've
talked about it? Is it a good job?
Speaker 1 (11:39):
Is the Dallas Well, if you look at the Jackson
State the Colorado Dallas Cowboys, that's a very noteworthy essentsion. Yeah, yeah,
so it is a great job now if you're coaching,
if you're Sark or Ryan Day, if Ryan Day won
the Natty, I look at the Dallas Cowboys and think
I'm gonna wait until I get a rookie quarterback on
(12:01):
a rookie deal, or I get a Justin Herbert or
a C. J. Stroud. So again, what is your job
if you go from Jackson's steak. I mean, Dion was
just broadcasting and speaking and he was great at it.
It was great broadcaster and a good public speaker and
all that stuff. Jackson State, Colorado, Dallas Cowboys. You take
that job. I mean, if I was in I would
(12:21):
take that job.
Speaker 4 (12:22):
I'll be honest here. You know Michael Lervin, we talked
to him during the break when he's on the show,
and he's just like upset that we're saying this is
not a good job. Straight up honesty. Colin. Jacksonville calls
you and says, we want you to be our head coach.
We've got Trevor Lawrence your show, Colin. Jerry Jones calls
you and says, hey, come on down, Colin, we want
you as a coach. No, no, no, because from a
football perspective, you can win with Jacksonville much sooner than Dallas.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
But I think Dion Sanders, now because he's had some
modicum of success at Colorado, views this as more than
just a football job. It is brand enabling. By the way.
Let's say he goes to and he's okay. He could
walk into another great TV gig. He could maybe say,
(13:07):
you know what, I want to be a part owner somewhere.
I want to do a little upstairs stuff. I mean,
it would give him more options. We always felt this
with Colorado. There's a pretty low ceiling and a pretty
low floor, like Colorado could be really bad and rarely great.
I mean, I couldn't tell you the last time they
were great. He put him back on the map.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
Basically, he put.
Speaker 1 (13:28):
Him on the map, but he didn't put him on
the best part of the map.
Speaker 4 (13:31):
But maybe that's not what he wants. Maybe he wants
the branding. I don't know what Dion wants. Does he
want the branding or does he want to win Super Bowls?
Speaker 1 (13:40):
What do the Eagles think today? Are they terrifying? I
don't think they're the least bit worried. And that's always
been my rule on it. What do your rivals think
when you hire somebody. The Kansas City Chiefs are a dynasty,
and they looked at Harbor Herbert and thought, oh boy,
wish she would have taken that Jacksonville job. Hardball wins
immediately everywhere, and even this year, Chargers matched up with
(14:04):
Kansas City pretty pretty well.
Speaker 4 (14:06):
If you're Washington, I don't even think you're quaking in
your boots.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
You got Dadan Daniels, you know, like if you're If
you're Washington, you didn't want Rabel going to Dallas. You
didn't want that. You didn't want Harball going to Dallas.
You didn't necessarily want Belichick going to Dallas. You can
live with primetime. Yeah, and again we're not saying you
can't coach, but we're saying it's unproven and what his
(14:31):
strength is. Showmanship doesn't matter in the NFL. In college
players select you. In the NFL, you select them. It
doesn't matter. I mean, Belichick's grumpy who it didn't matter.
It has no I mean many of the great coaches
have been rough around the edges, have not been showman,
have been gruff. Tom Coughlin he won in college, but
(14:52):
he was okay in college. Tom Cofflin was a great.
He's a Hall of Fame coach in the NFL.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
at noon eastern nin am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
You're now entering the No Bull Zone sponsored by Credible
Great Rates None of the Bowl. Greg co Sell forty
minutes from Now, if you like fantasy football, betting football,
getting smarter at football. We've been using him for ten
years on the show Greg co Sell, top of Next
Hour on a Thursday to breakdown all the NFL games.
So Big Ben Roethlisberger. He has a podcast, and if
you're a Steeler fan, it's great. He's got a little
(15:27):
studio somewhere. It looks like in his basement of his house.
He's very good. And so there's discussions right now. The
Steelers have acknowledged they don't know if they have the
right quarterback in their organization right now. Might take his
old Russell and young Justin that's not it. How many
quarterbacks in the history of the NFL have scrapped for
five years and then become stars. Justin Fields has talent,
He's not going to be a star quarterback. Struggled to
(15:47):
see the field, got hurt picks inaccuracy. He's a talented kid,
but he's probably a great backup or a spot starter occasionally.
So there's a rumor now and Aaron Rodgers it may
not be the solution long term, I would argue as
a real argument outside of Sam Donald, he'd be the
(16:09):
best fit in Pittsburgh. Big Ben doesn't think of the work.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Is Thearon gonna play anymore?
Speaker 7 (16:15):
I mean as a roomors that him coming to Pittsburgh,
which I don't think is a good move for the Steelers.
I don't think that's what you want. I don't think
you want a guy for one like a one year
band aid for the just because it's it's do you
think if you think that you are just a quarterback away,
then you go try and find a quarterback that you
(16:35):
think can take you over the top.
Speaker 1 (16:37):
Yeah, and I think fairly j mac I. People I've
talked to see Aaron as middle of the pack in
the NFL right now, at best thirteenth or twelfth thirteenth, best,
at worst sixteen seventeenth. I would take Baker Mayfield today
over and Sam Donald over Aaron. But Aaron had a good,
mostly good last seven eight weeks, and I do think
(16:58):
for Pittsburgh it would be a decent fit. He's grown up,
he could learn the playbook quickly. But the Steelers had been,
you know, putting band aids on for six years. I
think they have to rip it off. I would trade TJ.
Watt George Pickens two first round picks if your scouting
department said Shauduor Sanders is the guy, because I think
cam Ward's going to go number one. I think Shud
(17:19):
Sanders could get at number five, six or seven. But
the Steelers, what's interesting is they're in the same predicament
they were in twenty twenty two, where they need a
quarterback and it's a lousy quarterback draft, and they settled
for Kenny Pickett. And I said at the time, I
reported at the time I had talked to an NFL
general manager with Super Bowl rings who said he's a
(17:40):
third rounder. I talked to another general manager who had
been to a Super Bowl, had not won one, and
he said he's a mid to late third rounder. But
they had to reach. So, you know, the most proactive
franchise in the NFL for quarterbacks is indisputably Green Bay.
They draft them and sent them for years. You know
(18:03):
these guys. Pittsburg has not drafted an elite quarterback since
Big Ben and that was twenty one years ago. So
and there's a reason the Packers have not had a
quarterback shortage for three decades, they draft, hold, develop, and
then star. So the truth is, I don't know if
Aaron's the answer, but he may be the solution for
(18:23):
a year. But I think the Steelers they treat quarterback
a little like a New Year's resolution. They're all gung
ho about it, you know, but by like late February,
you're no longer going to the gym, and by late
November the Steelers aren't really a viable team. It sounds good,
there's a lot of hope and optimism, but you're not
going to the gym. By late February. You don't even
(18:46):
drive by it anymore. I would trade TJ. Watt, George
Pickens two first rounders, and go get Shudor Sanders if
you think he's a starting quarterback. Nobody that I talked
to in the league dot Kenny Pickett was a starter
back up, you know, homegrown kid. But proactive is the
way to do it. I mean, remember, Kansas City moved up,
(19:09):
gave away picks, They had a Pro Bowl quarterback in
Alex Smith, and you know Joe Flacco. Joe Flacco made
a lot of money and won a lot of games
in Baltimore, and they went and got Lamar Jackson. So
I think you got to take a big swing on
this thing if you want to go find the next
Big Ben. And Big Ben was a very good prospect
that of Miami ob Ohio. People knew Big Ben could
play big, strong, mobile, and he delivered, got him to
(19:31):
Super Bowls. But now, I don't you say whatever you
want about Aaron. To me, there's two teams in this league,
primarily the Steelers that are a quarterback away, well three
the Colts, the Seahawks and the Steelers if you got
the right quarterback. Pretty interesting teams. But there is no
recent history to make me believe Pittsburgh would get aggressive
(19:53):
Seattle Colts kind of think they would Pittsburgh. I don't
Jmack with the news.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
No, no turn on the news. This is the herd
line news.
Speaker 4 (20:04):
All right, Let's start with the best matchup of divisional weekend,
Ravens Bills Lamar versus Josh Allen. Both MVP candidates were
taken in the first round of the twenty eighteen draft.
And while we've seen Alan hang with his quarterback counterparts
in the offseason, Lamar keeps things all business.
Speaker 8 (20:23):
I don't need to chill with people off season, like
especially not other quarterbacks, like nothing like like, don't get
me wrong, there's no problem like that. But it's like
we compete against each other, like I'm trying to beat you.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
I'm trying to be a fan. When we older, we'll
probably laughing about it, but right now it's serious. I
ain't laughing with you. Can't wait. I still like Buffalo Vegas,
likes Baltimore.
Speaker 4 (20:47):
What about? What about that take from Lamar Jackson. We're competing,
I can't be friends with you.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
What Well, that's the way I like that. I don't
want my quarterbacks, so lot.
Speaker 4 (20:55):
Keep competing with Josh Allen. You're competing with the Bills defense.
They're coming after him and Josh Allen. They're not on
the field tackling one another. Like I just think that.
Speaker 1 (21:03):
I think. I think when you play Lamar or Josh
Allen and Mahalmes, you are competing against each other. I
think Barkley and MJ in the finals were competing different.
Speaker 4 (21:12):
That's different. They could get matched up one on one
in the paint in a post episode when you're talking
about legacy and contracts and trophies, so you can't be
friendly to the person and hang out in the during
the game. You just told me you went to lunch
with another radio host.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
Oh, what's going on? Yeah, competing. I would never speak
to him, acknowledge him if he was in the studio
during a show.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
I don't mind my quarterbacks being a little feisty and competitive,
but I don't have a problem with that.
Speaker 4 (21:38):
It's a brotherhood. Man.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
My locker room's a brotherhood. Your your locker room is
your problem.
Speaker 4 (21:44):
They're all football players, they're all buddies. They should be friendly.
I just don't. I don't like this.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
You don't even believe that they should be friendly.
Speaker 4 (21:52):
I mean, unless you're a jerk. But uh, by all accounts,
Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson are nice guys, well like, but
Lamar definitely is not in the hanging out with Patrick Mahomes,
going to Lake Tahoe and Steph Curry's golf tournament.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
I like that. I liked it. In the off season,
he's not available. Remember the Brady stuff. When you saw
text about Peyton Manning. Everybody's like, oh, Brady and Manning
are buddies, and Brady's like, yeah, really, I'm competing against
Peyton mann I think I like Lamar Jackson's like, you
guys go hang out and get golf tournaments. I'm gonna
(22:26):
be over here getting my traps in pooh.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
Yeah that's what it is. Yeah, definitely. So I did
make a wager here on this game. By the way,
have you laid anything on this one?
Speaker 1 (22:35):
I will tell you Philadelphia is the best pick of
the weekend, as long as the numbers five and a
half six. Okay, so we both had winning weeks last week.
Speaker 4 (22:43):
You gotta sit on the fence on the game of
the weeks.
Speaker 1 (22:47):
I would bet Buffalo plus points at home. I think
that's the side. I think it's a much deeper, more
diverse offensive menu. I got backs, tight ends, receivers, Zave
Flower not practicing again. So it comes down to I'm
on the road against Buffalo. It's me and Derreck Henry.
Is Dereck Henry gonna duplicate the effort I just saw? Doubtful?
Speaker 4 (23:10):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
I just I think if I have two offensive stars
two and a half, Mark Andrews and and right now,
if you look at yards per play, all the analytic
stats like Buffalo can beat you four five different ways offensively.
James Cook Josh Allen, the slot receiver down the field,
tight end usage.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
With Zaflower out. Who's the best two pass catchers in
this game?
Speaker 1 (23:33):
The tight ends Kincaid and Andrews. I mean, I think
they're very reliable players. I almost think the Bills have
better skill position guys.
Speaker 4 (23:44):
It's like Cook and Henry's clothes, but it's it's probably Henry,
but Cook's gonna catch passes.
Speaker 1 (23:49):
Cook Cook, he gets into the end zone. I think
he's a top five running back in the league. I
don't think he's as good as Gibbs. He's not as
dynamic as Gibbs, He's not as uh. He didn't have
the pass cat skills of Christian McCaffrey. He's not the
bulldozer of Derreck Henry. But in terms of just can
do a little bit of everything and can smell the
end zone, James Cooks great.
Speaker 4 (24:09):
Yeah, like him a lot. Next up is the Rams
defensive line showed up big against the Vikings, tying in
the NFL record with nine sacks on your guy, Sam
Darnold in that twenty seven to nine victory. This week,
they're facing the Eagles awesome offense. Right tackle Lane Johnson
spoke to the task at hand, saying, if you watch
a Minnesota game, it was a bleeping horror show. Thank goodness,
(24:33):
Aaron Donald is instill there, boy, you got some numbers here.
Fisk has been a beast Kobe Turner by rom Young.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
Of course, verse to their last two drafts, they're like
six for six on their high end defensive draft picks.
They're all excellent. You know, they have not missed on
a defensive draft pick in two or three years. Now.
Speaker 4 (24:55):
The Eagles did allow forty five sacks this season, and
I was reading some of how the Rams play a
lot of zone coverage and Jalen Hurts tends to hold
onto the ball just to tick too long, and that
it does invite some sacks. Now, AJ Brown we know
kills the man defense. DeVante Smith is his guy against zone.
So I wonder if A. J. Brown is gonna be
(25:15):
unhappy again facing this Rams defense. Maybe if he checks
out all of a sudden, then he's like, oh oh, But.
Speaker 1 (25:22):
Let's just think of a couple of things. Warm weather
team on a short week traveling to a cold weather city,
running back who will be needed? Not what happened to
off a game in which they played virtually perfect football.
Does that sound like a team that's gonna double down
on that. Eagles a much better team at home coming
(25:47):
off an ugly performance in which they won. I'll say
this about the Ram Their defense is outstanding, and I
think the game is a low scoring game. I think
both defenses. I really think this game is like twenty
three seventeen ish in that ball. It's not high scoring.
You're not gonna load up on that. You're not going
to score a lot of points on the Rams. I mean,
(26:07):
they've been great for a month and a half, and
I you know, the Rams against the Bills were against
the Vikings. They look if you don't watch the Rams
every week and you just watch those two games, high
profile game. The Bill game got a big rating and
Viking game got a big rating, but you didn't watch
the Rams. Beyond that, you think their offense is electric.
Now those are the two games it was electric there.
(26:30):
You and I both talked about this. They struggled moving
the ball in the first half against teams like the Jets.
Speaker 4 (26:35):
So those two games you mentioned were both indoors. I
looked at the outdoor games Rams.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
They're not the same.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
Especially look at the first half numbers, very slow start,
So I took the under twenty two and a half
first half.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
I think that's a really smart bets. Just in fact,
that could be the best bet of the weekend.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
Yeah, the Rams come out kind of slow and plodding,
and they's feeling them out. But look at the outdoor splits.
Don't just look at the indoor because, like you said,
if you look at that Bills game, you're like, oh,
Rams can score anyway, this is gonna be like twenty
five thirty degrees outdoors. Different story, final story here. A
lot of Bill Belichick's speculation Colin oh the ten million
dollars buy out, he could go back to the league. However,
(27:13):
his GM at UNC, Michael Lombardy, wants everybody to pump
the brakes. He put on social media. Bill is recruiting
in DC today and Baltimore tomorrow. His focus is North
Carolina football, hiring staff members and developing the team. The
NFL isn't an option, so please stop making it one.
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (27:35):
Well. I think I think the chances of him staying
in college for a year with Philadelphia and Buffalo both
winning this weekend are probably ninety eight percent, ninety nine percent.
Speaker 4 (27:48):
So Eagles lose, does Howie Rosevean he does?
Speaker 1 (27:52):
He call him? Probably, So here's not saying they'd hire him.
I say they call him. I thought if Buffalo or
Philly lost in first round, I said, that's Bill's out.
They both won, and I think they're both gonna win
in week two, So that tells me Bill is again
new information. Now, I think Bill's gonna stay at Carolina
(28:12):
for a year. But I did think if Buffalo got
beat by bo Nicks, they were gonna there was gonna
be big discussions in the executive suite of Buffalo about McDermott.
Speaker 4 (28:22):
Well, the interesting angle to that is there weren't many
hires until the latter part of this past weekend. Remember Sunday,
Lombardi put stuff out there after the results were that
I'm not calling out Lombardi.
Speaker 1 (28:36):
Bye, But the minute those two jobs closed, then Mike
Lombardi and Carolina aggressively pivoted to we are not considering
the NFL, and I now believe them.
Speaker 4 (28:48):
Yeah, I'm sure they were lining stuff up, getting guys ready,
but you're not gonna bring on a bunch of coaches.
They put some guys out of the NFL.
Speaker 1 (28:54):
Let me just ask you if North Carolina or coaching
Josh Allen. Well, that's not rather, that's not close.
Speaker 4 (29:01):
It could have been at That's but it wasn't. And
so yeah, I'm with this guy Lombardy who we both
know a little bit.
Speaker 1 (29:08):
Yeah, listen, I want to watch Bill. I want to
see in Bill in college. It's a pro model, which
Saban mostly did, but it still felt collegiate with Nick.
But it's a pro model in college to a the
nth degree. So I'm fascinated by it, and I do
think now Bill will stay. But you and I both
had the same feeling. Philadelphia's roster and Josh Allen.
Speaker 4 (29:31):
You have to at least take a call.
Speaker 1 (29:33):
You have to take if Josh Allen and Buffalo called
you and they got beat, you're not picking it up.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
Well as a Jets fan, I'm not picking up Just kidding,
but yeah, yeah, he would have certainly listened.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
That's Cavino and Rich. Seven of the eight quarterbacks remaining
in the NFL playoffs are first round picks, and then
there's Jalen Hurts. So the exception proves the rule, the
outlier proves the rule. Tom Brady's your outlier or in
(31:27):
this instance, Jalen Hurts is the outlier. But the bottom
line is quarterback coaching and quarterback recruiting and quarterback scouting.
Those are industries now. It is the only position in
pro football that is regularly overdrafted. Take the Colts this year,
this draft, they sat patiently and waited for the best
(31:48):
edge rusher to drop to them. Best edge rusher and
they needed one, and it's a valuable position. They waited
patiently the year before the Colts reached to get a quarterback.
In fact, if you look at the twenty twenty one draft,
there were five quarterbacks taken in the top fifteen picks.
We're not sold on any of them. Find me a draft. Recently,
(32:09):
we had five wide receivers taken in the first fifteen picks,
and we don't like any of them. So it's just
a position that you reach on. And I was looking
at all the quarterbacks and I thought it was interesting.
Is the only quarterback not in the first round is
Jalen Hurt. So I thought, well, let's just rank the
quarterbacks that remain in the NFL. So number one is Mahomes.
(32:31):
He's won seven straight playoff games, six and zero all
time in the Divisional round. I don't think anybody doubts
he is the best play from behind, big game quarterback
in the NFL. I mean, you get a little l
Way cognitively, you get Peyton Manning and Brady. Accuracy wise,
you get Drew Brees. He's probably, in my opinion, the
(32:52):
greatest quarterback talent of all time. Josh Allen also in
the top two or three, but he's number one, number two,
and I think that there's an argument that Josh Allen's
the most pure talented traits player at this position. Ever,
he doesn't have the trophies yet. He has won in
three all time in the Divisional round, but he has
the most yards per game totally yards per game in
(33:13):
playoff history. He is Superman. He can literally rush for
one hundred and forty yards in the game. That's not
what Mahomes is gonna give you. So Josh Allen is
number two. Lamar who's not viewed quite as successful once
you get into January in February as Allan or Mahomes
have been. But he does lead the NFL in yards
and pass attempts in yards per carry this season. So
(33:34):
what I would say with him is he is just
an all time Unicorn, a one of one talent that
is a little different. There's a little Michael Vick, there's
a little Steve Young, there's a lot of Lamar Jackson.
He's just different. We've never had a quarterback play like this,
this style, this good Lamar Jackson. I think number four
(33:55):
in one of the last great pocket passers, Matt Stafford.
He throws about the prettiest football we have seen in
a long time. Last eight games this year, he's been
on fire seven and one. He needs a good offensive
line in protection. Unlike the first three quarterbacks, He's not
gonna add lib with his feet. But if you look
at his playoff record since he joined the Rams, it's
(34:16):
five and one with a Super Bowl Trophy and a
passer rating getting up near one hundred and nineteen number six.
I'm sorry, guys, Jared Goff is great and you just
got to own it. First number one pick in a draft,
been to a Super Bowl with the LA Rams, and
right now Jared Goff, who again is the best pocket
passer in the league in his prime. You can say
(34:38):
all you want, but he's fourteen and in one in his
last fifteen games and in his last eight games, and
he's done this in his career. He's on a heater
at the end of a season now again, like Stafford,
he needs some protection and it helps at the Lions
and the Rams allD Lions were good. But I have
Jared Goff at five. We haven't a lot of information.
We don't have a lot on Jayden Daniels. I would
put Jayden Daniels at numbers. I think this is about
(35:02):
the best rookie quarterback I've seen since Lway and Andrew Luck.
He is so good Layden games. It just doesn't make sense. Poise, intelligence, mobility.
I mean, look at this throw in the end zone.
That's like his third fourth guy he's looked at. He's
just now again you could say Colin. He's better than Golf.
(35:24):
Well right now, I would take Golf in a big
game because I've seen him win a lot of big games.
But I put Jayden Daniels at six. CJ. Stroud, who's
very good but doesn't move around like a lot of
the top guys, I'd have him at seven. He had
a little bit of a sophomore slump, and he tends
to be better at home and warm weather, but he
(35:45):
didn't have great protection this year. He still throws an
absolutely beautiful football. He's zero and five as an underdog
this year. He has not shown, unlike Jayden Daniels, the
ability to take an average roster and beat better team teams.
But what he can do is beat the teams he
should and I think he's only going to get better.
And then number eight of eight is the only second
(36:10):
round pick of the final eight. Jalen hurts And how
do I say that? Go ask Greg Kosel. This is
a running team. Josh Allen can run, Soakin Lamar they
passed to This is a run team. Last five playoff games,
he's been good. Eleven TV's no picks. And again the
fact that I view him as probably the eighth best
(36:33):
quarterback in the pocket, leadership, top three or four in tangibles,
very high, but it's sitting in the pocket trailing in
a game. Gotta make throws into a cover, a nickel
coverage or a dime coverage. I'd put him at eight. Now,
some of you gonna argue c J. Stroud. I think CJ.
Stroud got his team into the playoffs without his two
(36:56):
best receivers and a battle line. Jalen Hurts, with two
great reis arguably the best back in the league and
the best ol line arguably got his team in the playoffs.
So can you overcome? Jayden Daniels overcame?
Speaker 3 (37:09):
C J.
Speaker 1 (37:09):
Stroud overcame. Here's the other story today. So I have
said that I think Aaron Glenn what he has done
in Detroit as the defensive coordinator, it's actually more impressive
considering all the defensive injuries, Aiden Hutchinson out for most
of the year. I think what Aaron Glenn has done
(37:31):
is remarkable. I think Ben Johnson's a very good offensive coordinator.
I just think the Lions are stacked offensively, and a
lot of guys could move the ball with these backs
and that tight end and amor on Saint Brown and
Piney Suell in this offensive line. So, Aaron Glenn, there
is a stigma that has developed, and I think it's justifiable.
(37:53):
But Aaron Glenn says, yeah, I know what you're saying.
I'm a defensive coach, not an offensive coach.
Speaker 9 (37:59):
And here's mister Glenn. I'm a coach. I just happen
to be on defense. I understand offense just as well
as a number of people. So if you want to
hire me, you're gonna hire a coach. You're not gonna
hire a defensive coach. I'm gonna talk to the offense
just so much I'm gonna talk.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
For the defense. So Okay, I understand that, and I
appreciate that, but I don't think the narrative's wrong. There
are two things to think about with defensive coaches once
again this year. If you look at the top offensive
lines in the NFL, graded overwhelmingly Eagles, Broncos, Lions, Packers, Chiefs,
(38:35):
Panthers six of eight offensive lines last year Eagles, Lions, Colts,
Cowboys once again Falcons. Remember they had Arthur Smith offensive
line coaches. If you look at the bottom of the
NFL this year, Seattle New England Steelers Raiders. Defensive coaches,
(38:59):
your number one, as said, in this sport is quarterback.
Why I don't know, for whatever reason, and I've been
on this for years. Offensive coaches can reboot and Readjust
look at Kansas City's done to their offensive line this year.
In season it was a mess. Eight weeks ago. They
(39:19):
moved to guard to left tackle Joe Toney, so or
is it right tackle? They moved Touney to one of
the tackles. So the point being is mcveigh's done this,
and he read's done this, She had a hand's done this.
Sean Payton did it in Denver. Yet Mike Tomlin, we're
on year seven. He can't figure out the offensive line
in Pittsburgh. So that's the first thing I worry about.
The number one asset in an organization is the quarterback.
(39:42):
Offensive coaches are better with offensive lines. What about Belichick?
The minute Dante Scarnekia retired, many believed the best offensive
line coach. Ever. The minute he retired, the O line
regressed quickly, and within two years it was a point
(40:06):
of weakness. The second thing to consider results three of
the four coaches remaining. Start looking at the final four
head coaches remaining in the last three years. You know
what you're finding, It's a lot of John Harbaugh and
offensive coaches. I was looking at this morning last season,
(40:27):
the final four coaches three of four offensive coaches. The
year before four of four offensive coaches. The year before
that four of four offensive coaches. Even Zach Taylor got
to a Super Bowl. So look at a line play,
it's better with offensive coaches, and look at results. The
(40:47):
winners at the end of these seasons seem like it's
John Harbaugh and offensive coaches. And what's interesting is offensive
coaches Jim Harbaugh, Andy Reid, Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, Sean
Payton are usually usually pretty good getting the defense right,
but you see with some regularity defensive coaches really struggling
(41:14):
to not be tone deaf on offense. The great offensive
coaches for whatever reasons. I mean, Sean Payton turned around
the defense if nothing else, he hired the right guy.
So I do think I prefer offensive coaches now. Demiko Ryans,
Sean McDermott, I think they're good. I think Aaron Glenn
(41:34):
is very hirable. Mike Vrabel I thought he was the
best candidate this year. So it's not that I'm anti
defensive coach, but there's a couple of factors you have
to consider, and also consider this one. There are no
more rules that favor the defense in this league. Belichick
jokes about that he's right more and more at safety
(41:56):
and protect offensive players. Greg coach Jordan Schultz, both around
the Corner, live in Los Angeles. H's the Hurd
