Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. All right, here we go.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Our two live in Los Angeles. It's The Herd, Dodgers
Podrais tonight, Game five one for the Ages. Yankees won
last night. They're in the Alcs. Wherever you may be
and however you may be listening, Thanks for making us
part of your day, Like tonight's one of those baseball
games felt like it feels like fifteen twenty years ago,
(00:49):
like you got to watch, especially if you're a West
Coast sports fan. It'll be as big a baseball game
as we've had in a year two. The Upstart suddenly
have need to spend Podreys over the last several years
with pettissee Manny Machado, a lot of swag, hungry, big
personality with the more refined, classy Dodgers bets and Freeman
(01:16):
and Otani, the veterans there, you know, between Dodgers Stadium
and the late Vin Scully And you know, the Dodgers
have always been sort of the above the frame, dignified,
a well moneyed, well healed, and here come the Podreys,
new kids on the block. They're cocky, uh you know
they're they're out there hip thrust into the crowd. They're
(01:38):
tawning Dodger fans in left field. And I gotta be honest,
the ying and the yang it's fun. Who do you
want to win tonight?
Speaker 3 (01:46):
It It reminds me remember when you over the summer
you went to some lobster shindig and Rhode Island.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
Yeah, dignified.
Speaker 5 (01:53):
It was a lot of pink shorts.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Yes, that would have been like if you invited me
to that and I showed up like a tank top,
Like what up?
Speaker 4 (01:59):
I was the padres in that one.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
I had a buddy text me that the Dodgers should
just trick everyone and have Otani trying to pitch tonight.
I mean, listen, this Otani needs to show up. This
is a big spot for him. I mean he doesn't
have the postseason experience.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Can you imagine how obnoxious the pod Rays will be
if they.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Win in La Oh yeah, oh yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:19):
I mean they they last game, fans throwing stuff at him.
They were taunting them.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Yeah, I kind of like it.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
In baseball had a ton of personality in the seventies
and early eighties. My favorite players at Mark Fidrich, Pete Rose,
Mickey Rivers.
Speaker 5 (02:34):
Mickey is a Yankee.
Speaker 1 (02:35):
Yeah, but then all of a sudden something happened and
there was a way to play the game, and it
got you know, very conservative and muted, and it's like
we're getting back.
Speaker 5 (02:44):
Do we have teams now?
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Like Francisco Lindor literally doesn't change his facial expression when
he hits a home run. But the Podrays are cocky
and they've got and they're just out there having they
got a little NBA field to them. They're gonna let
you know they're good. They're gonna be a little flashy.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
And I lind Door had a grand Slam and and
like no reaction. I mean, I hit one three pointer
and it's like, come on.
Speaker 1 (03:06):
Everybody, So it's gonna be a great one now. I
always have a rule on the show New Information, New Opinion.
I don't I don't get embedded in stuff New Information
New Opinion. I just had to eliminate one of my picks.
I had the Giants plus three and a half.
Speaker 5 (03:23):
It's out.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Malik Neighbors is out. Cincinnati's gonna score some points, and
you gotta score points. I thought Malik Neighbors I was
gonna do a DraftKings thing. I thought Malik was gonna
have a really, really, really.
Speaker 5 (03:33):
Big game night for the Giants. He's out. I don't.
It's not a good bet anymore.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
They don't have the firepower to match up. Cincinnati's gonna
score some points. And New York I thought was gonna
score more points. But I took that one out. So
I got four, not five. New information, new opinion. Here's
our blazing five.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Let's blaze it up, it up, It's Collins blazing. Fuck Cardinals.
I really like.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Green Bay minus five and a half. Romeo Dobbs, Christian
Watson returning, so they're getting healthy. They lead the NFL
in big plays, and a couple of their big play
guys are back. Jordan Love multiple touchdown passes in seven
straight games, tied for the longest streak believe it.
Speaker 5 (04:16):
Or not, in the NFL.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
Listen, the Cardinals get off the bad starts they've trailed
by at least ten plus points at halftime in three
straight games, and their third down defense is horrible.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
What does that mean?
Speaker 1 (04:27):
I love Arizona's offense, but they're gonna trail and they're
gonna struggle to keep Green Bay off the field. The
Packers offense this season, even with Malik Willis Jordan Love,
has been substantial. So I think a Green Bay team
getting healthy at home takes a lead, keeps Kyler Murray
in that offense on the bench. I like the Packers
to win and cover thirty three to twenty four.
Speaker 5 (04:50):
Charge Here said Bronco.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
I don't think Denver's good enough to win four straight games.
I'm gonna take the Chargers off a bye week. They
have both their tackles back minus three, so they're getting healthier.
It's an offensive coach and a good quarterback in a
bye week they get Derwin James off suspension. Two Harbaugh
against rookie quarterbacks has eating them alive. They complete fifty
seven percent of their throws and by the way, bo
(05:14):
Nicks is young. And if you look at the Chargers
defense this season, again, it's been really good, outstanding. The
Broncos three straight wins have been over the Raiders, Jets,
and Bucks. They're averaging one point four points per drive.
That's twenty ninth in the NFL. I'm going to take
the Chargers to win that football game twenty seven to twenty.
(05:37):
I will eat the points, Lions and Cowboys again. I'm
gonna take Detroit coming off a bye with Ben Johnson
and Jared Goff well balanced on offense, they run and passed.
Goff over the last two games is completing eighty eight
percent of his throws. That's because PFF has their own
line is number two. I think it's number one. Aiden Hutchison,
(05:58):
outside of Fred warn the highest reded defensive player in
the league. He is just a monster. And the Cowboys
since Week two, they're averaging twenty one points a game.
They're a bb gun. They're games. This is a really
big thing. Dallas is coming off three straight physical games.
Think about this. Steelers Giants in Baltimore, big physical games,
(06:23):
and their three wins have been against justin Fields, Daniel
Jones and Deshaun Watson. This is a total step up
in class for the Cowboys, who can't run the football
and don't stop it particularly well. And the Lions have
a great old line in two backs, I like I'm
gonna say the Lions win and cover thirty four to
twenty eight.
Speaker 5 (06:42):
I love in the.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Favorites Bills at Jets, except here, I like the Bills
to win. I'm gonna take the points with the Jets
plus two and a half. It's weird when teams get
interim coaches. It's a division rival. Three of the last
four meetings decided by one possession. By the way, the
Jets losses have been to Minnesota, maybe the best team
(07:03):
in the league, and the Broncos a chance a game
they should have won, and their defense is allowing fewer
yards per play than any other team in the league. Meanwhile,
Bills have sixteen players on the Thursday injury report. Josh
Allen is reeling his last four games against the Jets,
as Jmack noted this week, have not been good. Seventy
(07:25):
four passer rating, and we got to be honest about
the Jets defense.
Speaker 5 (07:28):
It's outstanding.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
It completely shut down Minnesota in the second half. I
think this is a low scoring, close game. I'm gonna
take the points. I think it's a thrilling game. I'm
gonna take the Bills to win. Twenty four to twenty three,
but I will take the points with the Jets. That's
my blazing four. I took out the Giants game, Molik
Neighbors out. I'm not rolling if I had a fifth game.
(07:53):
There's two I think are interesting. I think Philadelphia, although
I didn't want to take another favorite. I don't like
big favorites. I think Philadelphia could mash Cleveland. I like
Chicago against Jacksonville. Although teams that go to overseas on
a regular basis generally do well, so I don't think
it's good enough to put in the Blazing five. But
(08:13):
I do think Chicago's gonna win and Philadelphia is gonna wins.
It's a rare week where I like favorites, a lot
of favorites. The Giants was a dog. I had to
take that one out once mylike neighbors got hurt and
Jay Mack will have his picks in an hour and
a half.
Speaker 5 (08:26):
Anything jump out to you that you do.
Speaker 3 (08:27):
Like well this whole there's nine home underdogs this week.
I saw that once that this is the most in
like a decade. You gotta tread very costously. Yes, with
home dogs, they're not going to go eight and one
agree totally. But with neighbors out, wouldn't you just flip
to Bengals?
Speaker 5 (08:43):
No, because I don't.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
Everybody's been telling me to bet Joe Burrow for four
weeks and my takeaway is this defense is the worst
in the league. So the Giants with neighbors I thought
would win. Without neighbors, I think they'll be it'll it's close.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
They had the Ravens dead to rights. I mean it
was over ten.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
They've had a lot of teams dead to rights. They
are atrocious defensively. Also true, Albert Breer, Monday Morning Quarterback
is joining us now live.
Speaker 5 (09:08):
So I want to pose a question to you.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
I was really very reticent to embrace brock Purty, and
then about four weeks ago he had a game and
I thought, you know what, I'm He's more mobile and
athletic than I think. He tends to get leads because
of Kyle Shanahan distribution, good decisions playing with a lead
in the NFL at halftime, you went about sixty five
percent of your games, I think. And I watched him
(09:33):
last night against the two time pro bowler Gino Smith,
and he's a better player than Geno Smith. And everybody
thinks Geno's pretty good. My takeaway is he's proven himself,
will get a contract. You're sourcing, what do you hear?
Do you think he has another level to prove or
do you think like in the house, he's their guy
going forward.
Speaker 6 (09:49):
Well, let me just start with what I know and
then I'll tell you what I think. What I know
is that they are planning on paying after the year,
and I Kyle Shanahan said as much to me over
the summer. You know, we talk talked about how they
build a team differently, he said, we've been through that before.
We went through with Jimmy Garoppolo when Garoppolo became the
highest paid quarterback in football. And so there was a
(10:10):
real acknowledgment there that they are going to do this
and they do feel that confident and they felt that
way about him Calin going back to his rookie year.
I mean, Kyle told me, like, based on the tape,
like this is the type of player he's going to be,
and they really feel like he's becoming that type of player.
Speaker 7 (10:24):
Now.
Speaker 6 (10:24):
What I think is like what we're seeing over the
last month is something we haven't seen before, which is
the type of player that you need to have when
you're putting him on that sort of contract, Who's going
to have to deal with some holes on the roster
because you can't pay everybody, And so having to play
without Christian McCaffrey, having to play without George Kittle, having
to play without Deebo Samuel, having those guys come back
(10:46):
from injury, then having to deal with Brandon Ayuk who
hadn't been out there all summer. There have been a
lot of moving parts on the offense. Trent Williams wasn't
even you know, wasn't even there during training camp. So
just a lot of moving parts over the last two months.
And nobody asked for any of that, and nobody asked
for them to be three and three right now. But
(11:07):
we've seen a guy who can go out and make
plays on his own. You see the scramble plays, you
see him turning out first downs with his legs. You know,
I'm not comparing him to Tom Brady, so don't get
me wrong here, but I still remember at the beginning
of Brady's career, because of where he was drafted, people
were so resident to put him on the same level
as Peyton Manning. He got called a game manager. He's
(11:29):
got a great coach, a great system, all of that
different stuff, and we wound up finding the truth in time,
finding out the truth in time. I don't think brock
Perty's gonna be Tom Brady again. Don't get me wrong
on that, but I do think there's that piece of
it where a guy doesn't live down his draft position
and people can't get over where he was drafted. This
guy's a really, really good player, and a much better
(11:50):
player than people have given him.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
Tony Romo and Kurt Warner were undrafted, so he's obviously good.
So listen, I you know idea that Woody Johnson and
Aaron Rodgers talked and there was no you know, tip
of tip off of what was gonna happen to whatever
you have it better sourced, I'm sure than me. I
just I'm a little skeptical on that. But be that
as it may. It does shift now with Nat Hackett
(12:13):
being demoted, it does shift the responsibility on wins and
losses to Aaron. You're not blaming the Hackett Sala's gone,
You're not gonna blame the interim coach. Doesn't look like
they're gonna get Devonte Adams right now. So my take is, Okay,
now it's Aaron's team. So as Aaron's team, we could
talk about who they're going to hire as a coach.
I'm not really interested. Here's my take going forward. I
(12:34):
think Monday is the biggest game for Aaron Rodgers outside
of that playoff game against Detroit and biggest game in
two or three years. Like, this is it they win?
This is Aaron's team. Do you feel going forward that
the Solomn move is a is a plus negative or
a minus? How do you think it plays out going forward?
Speaker 6 (12:55):
Yeah, you know, I kind of share the sentiment of
a lot of people in that locker room, and I
can just tell you he like Sala was loved in
that locker room, and Rogers loves him. I mean Rogers
and Sala. I'm told we're on the phone for a
half hour with each other on Wednesday. Saala spent a
lot of time in the quarterback room over the summer
and into the fall, so those two became closer. So
I don't think there was a personal issue with Sala
(13:18):
and Rogers or Sala or and anyone in that locker room.
The prevailing thought in that locker room was what exactly
is this going to accomplish. We have a great defense,
you have the architect of that defense as your head coach.
You've got a really good defensive coordinator in Jeff Oulbrick,
and now you're pulling the head coach out of the equation, who,
by the way, was going to make the switch and
offensive play callers on his own before any of this happened.
(13:41):
And you're elevating the defensive coordinator to head coach, so
you're spreading him thin a little bit too. So that's
the big question is like where does this make us better?
And I think those questions circulating inside that locker room
make Monday a very big game for Aaron for everyone
else there, because this is the sort of spot where
(14:01):
it's okay, we'll see if they get that bump from
having an interim coach and from everybody being put on notice.
It's a tough spot for everyone in that building to
be in right now, you know, with Jeff Ulbrick changing
roles with a new offensive play caller and Todd Downing
in his first game, and if they come out and
look great, then maybe they'll be gangbusters the rest of
(14:24):
the year. I sort of feel like if they don't, though,
if Buffalo comes out and beats them by two touchdowns
or three touchdowns, don't you sort of have the feeling
like what lever do we have left to poll? Now? Again,
it's just a fascinating spot because this isn't typically the
type of spot where you fire a coach in mid season,
because generally those teams are either dead in the water
(14:45):
or the coaches lost the locker room, and that just
isn't the case with this team right now. Jeff Albrick's
message to the team inside the building yesterday when they
started their preparation for the Bills was that everybody has
to lock arms and it's us against the world again.
If they can't play that way on Monday night, I'm
just not sure what lever they have left to pull
after you pulled this one this week.
Speaker 1 (15:06):
Okay, Drake May, there's a lot of consternation in New England.
It looks like, okay, kid, Caleb, Jade and Daniels are
playing bow nicks. I honestly, you know what I think, Albert.
I think New England looked at Caleb's play. I think
they getting better. I think they looked at Jayden Daniels
I think they looked at bow Nicks and they thought,
(15:26):
let's go.
Speaker 5 (15:27):
Those aren't perfect teams.
Speaker 1 (15:29):
I mean there is some sort of you could sit
there and do the Jacoby Brissette thing and you would
look really smart. If Caleb Jaden and Bo Daniels were
stinking the joint up, you and Atlanta would look brilliant.
But there is something to be said about if the
guy can play, can play. You know that there's that
outside peer pressure stuff.
Speaker 6 (15:49):
I think this is actually more about the starter than
it is about the rookie. You know why there's not
pressure to play Michael Penix in Atlanta because they have
Kirk Cousins, and Kirk Cousins has a lot of skins
on the wall.
Speaker 8 (16:00):
You know.
Speaker 6 (16:00):
Ultimately they had a development plan for Drake Man. He's
come along great. Like if you watched him in the preseason,
from the first to the second to the third preseason game,
there was progress week over a week. He looked great
in the preseason finale, you know, against the against the Commanders.
In practice, his footwork, his eyes, all that stuff is
better over the last couple of weeks. The last piece,
which is dealing with the blitz, has really come along.
(16:22):
They've found creative ways to get him first team rep,
so all that stuff is in place. I think they're
playing him before they intended to, because I think it's
become very clear in that building that he's now the
best quarterback, not just the most talented quarterback, cool, but
the best quarterback. And it's become harder and harder and
harder through the losses to San Francisco to Miami to
sell Jacoby Brissette as the best option to the locker room.
(16:45):
And I think that that's sort of where you're at
right now. It's not hard for the Atlanta coaches to
sell kirk Cousins to the locker room. Everybody in that
building knows what Kirk Cousins has has has accomplished, so
that gives them the freedom to wait as long as
they want with Michael. Same deal as you had in
Kansas City in twenty seventeen when it was Mahomes behind
Alex Smith, or in twenty twenty in Green Bay when
(17:07):
you had Jordan Love behind Aaron Rodgers. The reality is
that the Patriots don't have a veteran quarterback like that
in the roster, and veterans on your roster don't care
about your three year plan or your plan for developing
the quarterback, and when the team's struggling like this, it
can become harder to sell a quarterback to the team.
And I think that that's where the Patriots were when
they made this decision. Yes, Drake was making a lot
(17:28):
of progress, Yes they believe in Drake, but I think
they did this a little earlier than they had planned
to because Jacoby Brissett became harder to sell as a
solution to that locker room.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
Finally, either Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator for the Steelers,
has no self awareness or it was intentional. When asked
about Justin Fields, he literally said, well, there's no drama,
there's no you know, trying to make him. You know,
he doesn't live through his avatar on social media. And
I just thought, whoa, that's not even subtle. I mean,
(18:00):
so Pete Carroll wanted him out, Sean Payton publicly ripped him.
And I mean Arthur Smith either has no self awareness.
I think he's a pretty smart guy, or I mean,
were you at least surprised by the lack of subtlety
and nuance to the answer to you know, what do
you think of Justin Fields.
Speaker 6 (18:20):
I would be if I didn't know where the momentum
in that building has been going for the last six weeks, okay,
and the momentum in that building has been stick with
Justin Fields. He is loved by the coaching staff. He
has made progress week over a week. That Colts game
showed them a lot a couple of weeks ago, where
he had to play from behind and they had to
(18:40):
throw a lot and his receivers didn't do him any
favors late in that game. He didn't point any fingers.
He just kept playing. Ye know, the game against the
Cowboys wasn't ideal, and I don't think anybody would say
that it was. It was played obviously under really weird circumstances, delayed,
you know, wet field, all that different stuff. Yeah, But
you know, what they see in Justin Fields is a
(19:01):
guy that they can really work with. And I do
think that they feel like there are some limitations to
what they can do if they put Russell Wilson out there.
And so I think they're viewing this not only on
where the two players are right now, but where they're
going to be in November, where they're going to be
in December and who's ultimately going to give them the
best chance in January. And I can tell you this
without equivocation. Colin Arthur Smith and some of those coaches
(19:24):
worked with Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee and they got to
an AFC Championship game with Ryan Tannehill. They feel like
as a reclamation project, they can do more with Justin
Fields than they could do with Ryan Tannehill. Again, I'm
not talking about him becoming Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen,
but they believe they can turn Justin Fields into a
really good playoff level quarterback and right now that might
(19:45):
be more than they feel like they can do with
Russell Wilson. So whether they give Russell a shot at it,
which they might, they may throw him in there and
see what he can do. Gives them two cracks at it.
I do think ultimately Justin Fields is going to wind
up being the quarterback of the Steelers, whether it's through
not giving Russell the job back or eventually giving the
job back to Justin after giving Russell a crack at it.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
Albert, have a great weekend. Monday Morning Quarterback as always,
great stuff, can't wait and thanks.
Speaker 6 (20:10):
Bud, awesome, thanks Golling.
Speaker 1 (20:12):
Yep. So the Niners have told Albert Breer Kyle Shanahan
they're gonna pay him. He's their guy. No equivocation. All
in on brock Purty. He looks the part. Like I said,
you don't get many stinkers from him. He may not
have Lamar's twitchiness. Josh Allen size, Mahomes Stafford talent. He's
a good quarterback next to Gino, who everybody seems to
think is a you know, Pro Bowl quarterback. Next to Gino,
(20:33):
he's a better quarterback. Makes fewer big mistakes, fewer clunkers,
one more heard. The Herd streams twenty four hours a day,

Speaker 5 (20:46):
All Right, a lot of things going on.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
Ducks, buck Eyes tomorrow, Longhorned Sooners tomorrow. I think text
is gonna roll Oklahoma. I'm looking at the upset for Oregon,
rural Ohio state former Duck Jeff Short stops by. J
mckill have his picks though, First, J mckel the news, no.
Speaker 6 (21:08):
News, this is the Herd line news.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
Are you've been hyping this game?
Speaker 2 (21:13):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (21:13):
Tonight, Dodgers padres from Chavez rev.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Very exciting. Uh, I think a lot of the focus
is gonna be on show. Hey Otani here, he has
hit that bomb in game one, but he's quietly not
had an amazing series of being okay, reaching bay safely
in five of ten played appearances. But in the losses,
Otani was one for eight with four strikeouts, no RBI.
He's four for six with runners on base, Oh for
ten with nobody on though now he is. He is
(21:39):
hitting leadoff and here's the troubling number one for eight
lifetime against pod Starter.
Speaker 4 (21:44):
You Darvish Darvas was filthy in Uh was it game three?
Speaker 1 (21:48):
He'd been around a while, He's pitched in some big games.
Speaker 4 (21:51):
Maybe it was Game two, but whatever, he fit nos
game two. Yeah, Darvius was incredible, and Dodgers are favored tonight.
Speaker 3 (21:59):
Listen, I think we have oh pressure. Everybody thought Otani
was gonna be nervous before game one. He hits that
three run Jack, I wonder what the pressure is gonna
be like. Obviously, you know he's a super famous baseball player.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Probably all the pressures on the Dodgers. Yeah, here comes
young hungry, cocky Podrays, the swagged out Podas. Oh yes,
they love. I think the Podreys. I think they love
this moment. This is who they are. Chado's throwing baseballs
with the Dodgers dugout. Yeah, I think this is who
they are. They love being the underdog.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
I know you're a seventies baseball guy.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
I say the Padres like logo and hat from the eighties,
the color scheme. I don't know if it's number one
from the eighties, nineteen eighties baseball.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Now, my first interview ever in this business was Tony Gwynn. Really,
classiest guy, nicest guy I've ever interviewed.
Speaker 5 (22:49):
It's a superstar. What a guy.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
This This is incredible. This is the contrast. Here you
have the refined sort of leader in the clubhouse vip sec.
It's Mooki and Freeman and Otani and Clayton Kershaw, you know,
these big brands, and then here he got the upstart.
I mean, the Dodgers could have had Manny Machado and
they didn't want to pay for him. They let him go,
so he got a chip on his shoulder. Everybody on
that team's got a chip on their shoulder.
Speaker 4 (23:12):
I don't get this didn't want.
Speaker 5 (23:13):
To pay for it.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
They spend more money than.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
Well, it didn't he didn't fit maybe their locker room.
He didn't fit their culture. He didn't fit. They didn't
need him. They by the way, they had their eye
on Otani several years ago.
Speaker 5 (23:24):
So I mean, you don't know what happens.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
I did read a story Baseball payrolls are strange that
the Tigers, who are still alive in the playoffs by
the Guardians in Game five coming up, they have an
eighteen million dollars payroll for their.
Speaker 4 (23:36):
Hopeless season roster. It was in the Wall Street Journal.
Speaker 3 (23:38):
I was say eighteen million, they were Judge makes way
more than that alone. Baseball is strange, and go Dodgers.
Next up, Colin is the Seattle Seahawks. Man, they really
got destroyed last night by San Francisco.
Speaker 4 (23:49):
But here's a troubling trend.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
They started three to zero and in their last three
games stepping up in class in two of them.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
The defense has been shredded.
Speaker 3 (23:58):
The Lion said three hundred and eighty nine yards, said
five scoring drives of seventy or more yards. The Giants
with your boy Daniel Jones four hundred and twenty yards
of offense, and last night the Niners just shredded four
hundred and eighty three yards. Rookie head coach Mike McDonald,
who's supposed to be a defensive guy, said this after
the loss.
Speaker 8 (24:16):
We've obviously not played good football in the last three games,
and armor we go. So the mentality always has to be, Hey,
let's move forward, let's attack this thing, and let's fight
like hell to make it right.
Speaker 1 (24:29):
Fairness, Fairness matters in the herd. We're a show that's fair.
Let's see that remains the last three weeks, a mash
unit on their defensive front.
Speaker 3 (24:39):
All that you didn't play last night, the great quarter
of that great he's a very good quarterback.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
They're beat up, they're getting shredded. Yeah, Rams in the
same Hawk. You're not getting Seahawks defense, Rams offense. They're
just not the same. So it's hard for me to
bang on McDonald or Sean McVay when you're when you're
playing with backups.
Speaker 3 (24:57):
So at what level do you get concerned about the
They do have falcons up next. You got to win
that on the road because after that it's no Rams,
A Bills, Rams Niners.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
I think the Rams are gonna get healthy in two
weeks and going a round and be impressive. I think
the Niners of the Niners, Arizona is the Buffalo Bills
of the NFC. Depending on the week, they're amazing. I
think green Bay and Arizona. I think green Bay is
a great matchup against Arizona, But I think Seattle. I
can't take them seriously until they get the quarterback.
Speaker 7 (25:28):
Right.
Speaker 3 (25:29):
Do we need to do a one third check in
on playoff teams like is Seattle for your projections right
now a playoff team in the NFC?
Speaker 5 (25:37):
No, that's not good. They were really.
Speaker 1 (25:41):
First of all, there's too many teams that are good.
We didn't expect to be good. Did we think Minnesota
would do this? Do we think Washington would do this?
We did not, So we have two teams massively out
performing expectations. Now the Niners aren't as good, but Gino's
zero to five against them after last night, So you
got a couple. We knew Green Band Detroit would be good,
(26:01):
we thought Philadelphia would be and by the way, we
both liked Atlanta and Tampa would be fighters. But I mean,
nobody felt Washington in Minnesota be this good, and so
it looks like they're gonna take two playoff spot.
Speaker 3 (26:11):
I know it's early, but that Dallas Detroit game is
big this weekend. Like Dallas does not have a lot
of room to fall behind in the NFC. As you
just articulated, they're probably not top seven in the NFC
right now, but if they beat Detroit, they're in there.
And if Detroit beats them, Detroit then goes to the
upper crush.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
I don't think it's a great matchup. Here's what I
worry about. Dallas does have the ability to move the
ball when they trail, and Detroit gives up a lot
of yards.
Speaker 5 (26:35):
In the back end.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
I think it's a shootout. I think there's a lot
of points.
Speaker 4 (26:38):
A big, big time shootout. Coming. Final story is oh
college football.
Speaker 3 (26:43):
Yes, two freshman wide receivers colin are really lighting up
college football. That would be Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State,
who is unbelievable, and Ryan Williams, the speedster at Alabama.
Smith has six touchdowns in five games for Ohio State.
Ryan Williams had the electrifying square against Georgia. He's got
six touchdowns through five games. The young Buckeye receiver. Smith
(27:06):
said he feels like he and Williams are the best
receivers in the country right now as freshmen colin.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
These guys can't get to the NFL for three seasons.
Smith right now could go.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
He's physically there is We've talked about this. There's no
position in the sport of football that is furnishing the
NFL with more stars day one than receiver. When you
watch these two guys play, they would be the number
one receiver on about ninety percent of NFL teams. Wait,
this kid from Ohio State, he could leave after this
(27:37):
year and be a top three pick wide receiver. He
could be a top be a top receiver in the
least oh I think I think both these kids would
be top receiver. I think the kid at Ohio State
could be a top five.
Speaker 5 (27:48):
Receiver in the league.
Speaker 1 (27:49):
Remember, remember, youth is an advantage for receiver and running back.
It's not for left tackle and quarterback or defensive tax
running back, wide receiver. I'll take a receiver at twenty
four over thirty four. So it's one of the rare positions.
Speaker 5 (28:09):
I think.
Speaker 1 (28:09):
That's why I say, with Devonte Adams, what am I
giving up? I mean, the Ramsey in the wide receiver.
They'll be twelve because Cooper Cups no longer available.
Speaker 5 (28:18):
They got a cup the Cups.
Speaker 1 (28:21):
It's it's way past the prime.
Speaker 5 (28:24):
He's never healthy. They like him, but Pooka is the one.
Now Coop's not available. Tight ends hurt.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
They're they're they've drafted all defense last two years, so
they're getting old and creaky on offense. That's why everybody's
always hurt. But I'm just telling you, when I watched
the Ohio State kid, he's not Justin Jefferson or Jamar
Chase yet. But you watch the catches he's making.
Speaker 4 (28:43):
I think Randy Moss, I'm not kidding. Unbelievable athlete.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
There's only a couple. I mean, when I saw Adrian
Peterson in college, you knew he would be a top
five NFL running back, the first year running back, wide receiver.
Youth doesn't FaZe me. Left interior lineman.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
I don't even know how Oregon matches up with this kid.
Just Conkin, He's just a jumpball machine looking well.
Speaker 5 (29:07):
Nobody matches up with him now.
Speaker 3 (29:08):
Bruce Feldman, you know who comes on the show, wrote
an article about him and Smith bench presses like three
hundred and fifty five pounds, squats over five hundred as
a freshman in college. Goal that those are insane numbers
for a receiver that's like a defensive end like a
Bosas doing those Zumber Jeremiah Smith.
Speaker 1 (29:24):
Really, I think, I'll be honest with you, you have
to stay in college for three years. About every decade
there's a player that you're like, he could go after
one year in college with the pros. I think the
kid from Ohio State's it. I think he could play
in the pros right now and be like elite.
Speaker 5 (29:43):
J Mack with the news.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the Herd.

Speaker 4 (30:07):
On Box.
Speaker 1 (30:10):
Gigantic. Game does not get any bigger than that.
Speaker 5 (30:16):
I think I like I don't know.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
I think I like the Padres.
Speaker 5 (30:20):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (30:23):
By the way, I forgot about something, so I had
said earlier in the first hour. You know, I always
thought Russell Wilson was the cog, that was the engine,
that the catalyst that drove the Seahawks almost dynasty. But
Pete Carroll moved off him, Sean Payton publicly ripped him,
and Arthur Smith clearly took a shot at him. When
asked about Justin Fields, I forgot about this in college.
(30:47):
His college coach at North Carolina State bailed on him.
That's why I transferred to Wisconsin. So he's had four
coaches despite being a brilliant player in his prime, move
off him that at some point I have to acknowledge
I'm wrong. Mike Tomlin earlier today on Russell Wilson's status
backing up Justin Fields.
Speaker 9 (31:09):
Thought he had a good week. He's proven his health. NA,
it's just a matter of knocking the rust off.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
See's shuren you enough to be active on Sunday.
Speaker 9 (31:17):
Yeah, he's probably gonna be active as a number two
quarterback like what I've seen out here. But again, health
and russ are two different things. I thought he had
a good week, displaying his health, his ability to protect himself. NA,
it's just the process of getting reacclimated.
Speaker 1 (31:30):
Yeah, Tom O'Brien, Russ had been a very good I
don't know what is His college numbers at Wisconsin were great,
they were insane best like Wisconsin quarterback one year sample. Ever,
Tom O'Brien chose Mike Glennon over him, and Russell had
been a three year starter.
Speaker 5 (31:47):
Isn't that crazy?
Speaker 8 (31:49):
You know?
Speaker 1 (31:50):
I have to admit It's like I watched this movie
and I thought I got it, and then the ending
comes up and it's like, yeah, I didn't get the movie.
I always thought it was Russ. I didn't think it
was Marshawn Lynch.
Speaker 5 (31:58):
I thought he was good.
Speaker 1 (31:59):
I didn't the defense was obviously great, but I thought
like Russell was the catalyst. I mean four different coaches
have said see you later. I mean Arthur Smith taking
a shot at him, say any of this. I like,
justin fields, there's no drama, you know, not living through
his avatar.
Speaker 5 (32:14):
The hell what is crazy? That's not even subtle.
Speaker 1 (32:21):
So I was watching Brock pretty last night and I
was not that I was late, but it was like,
you know, you know, let me see this. So I
think last night was a great example. You watch him
and Gino on the same field, he's a better quarterback
than Gino. So we'll play a little game here. We're
gonna call it better than Brock with a question mark.
You give me the quarterback and all things considered. Now,
(32:43):
now is this Who do I think is better today?
Not ten years down the line? Just who do I
think is better right now?
Speaker 6 (32:51):
Right?
Speaker 4 (32:51):
I don't care about what's happened in the last five years.
Speaker 1 (32:53):
Well, no, no, no, right now? Okay, I don't even
care about salary down the line.
Speaker 5 (32:58):
Right now? Oh, you should be quick. Who I think
is the better quarterback?
Speaker 4 (33:01):
Okay, better than Brock? Is Dak Prescott better than Brock?
Speaker 1 (33:05):
Yeah, Dak led the NFL and touchdown passes last year
with one star receiver thirty six.
Speaker 5 (33:10):
So Dak is slightly better than Brock.
Speaker 4 (33:12):
You just told me it's not about last year.
Speaker 5 (33:14):
It's about right now.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
No, But I mean Dak is showing. I mean we're
only five games into this season. Dak played like Hellen
won this weekend. Again, I didn't say back five years ago,
but I'm looking at who you are now, and I
have to at least look at last year to some degree.
Speaker 4 (33:27):
Okay, is Sam Darnold better than Brock?
Speaker 1 (33:29):
No? I would take Brock. Sam has a history of
getting really really reckless. Brock Purty's a lot of things,
reckless is never one of them. Also, Sam gets hurt
and brock Purty doesn't get hurt.
Speaker 3 (33:39):
Okay.
Speaker 5 (33:39):
Is Jared Goff? Yes, Jared.
Speaker 1 (33:43):
Only Patrick Mahomes in the last three years has thrown
for more yards than Jared Goff. Jared Goff is the
number one pick for a reason.
Speaker 4 (33:52):
Is Jordan Love better than Brock?
Speaker 1 (33:54):
Yes, he's a better He's a better athlete. He's got
a better arm, he's got a better deep ball arm.
He's a better athlete. Over the last fifteen games, Jordan
Love thirty four touchdowns, ten picks, with a young receiving
corps and a rebuilt offensive line, and he doesn't have
Kyle Shanahan engineering the first half plays.
Speaker 4 (34:14):
I thought we had had shifted, but I guess not.
Is CJ. Stroud better than Brock?
Speaker 5 (34:18):
Yes, yeah, I'd take CJ. Stroud.
Speaker 1 (34:21):
CJ. Stroud again had the pressure of being part of
a rebuilding franchise. He didn't get the Mercedes he got
like a used prelude and said, hey he even.
Speaker 5 (34:35):
Gets I got nothing.
Speaker 1 (34:36):
But I mean he didn't get Here's a Mercedes kid,
don't hit the garage door.
Speaker 5 (34:40):
He got an old car?
Speaker 4 (34:43):
Okay, is to uh better than Brock?
Speaker 2 (34:46):
No?
Speaker 5 (34:46):
I take Brock.
Speaker 1 (34:47):
He stays he's healthier, and I think I think he's
more athletic, and I think he's healthier.
Speaker 3 (34:52):
This is the first real tough one. Is Jaden Daniels.
Speaker 1 (34:55):
Yes, yes, Jade and Daniels a significantly better athlete. And
I mean you cannot watch Jayden Daniels and not have
this opinion. He looks a lot like Lamar Jackson. Who
do I look at with Brock and say, it looks
a lot like there.
Speaker 5 (35:12):
Is no Tom Brady.
Speaker 4 (35:13):
We've been over this.
Speaker 1 (35:14):
He looks like he's a shorter Tom Brady.
Speaker 4 (35:17):
Is bone knicks better than Brock slightly?
Speaker 5 (35:21):
Ye what, he's a more accurate thrower.
Speaker 1 (35:24):
Collegiately, I think bon Nix's is by the way, he's
starting to settle in.
Speaker 5 (35:30):
He didn't inherit all these Kittle.
Speaker 1 (35:33):
And Debo and Iuke and all these wonderful toys to
play with. He's basically got Courtland Sutton and cross your fingers.
Bo Nix is a on a heater and again C J.
Stroud bon Nicks they have the responsibility to rebuild a team.
They don't get the luxury seating day one.
Speaker 4 (35:54):
So I just want to be clear.
Speaker 7 (35:55):
Bon Nicks is better than brocky Yes, Yes, Is Trevor
Lawrence better than Brock if he was on, if both
were on the market, you take Trevor Lawrence bigger, more athletic,
better arm Yeah that that come on, if he was
on the market.
Speaker 4 (36:09):
And close it's Caleb Williams better than Brock.
Speaker 1 (36:12):
Yes, that's not close either. One guy's a significantly better athlete.
What you don't take into consideration, this is what people
don't brought. Purty's a trust fund kid. Basically he walked.
He's like Magic Johnson. Here's Kareem Like I mean, when
you get to come into college, out of college to
the pros and you literally have the best scheme coach
(36:33):
Trent Williams, Debo Christian McCaffrey. The responsibility is the ask
is totally Caleb's being asked with a wobbly franchised, Hey kid,
save us, Brock.
Speaker 5 (36:46):
Purty's not a save us guy in a franchise.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
Trust trust fund kid. Rock Perty is the lowest paid
quarterback in the league.
Speaker 4 (36:52):
Just not that that means anything. Anyways, Is Jalen Hurts
better than Brock perty.
Speaker 5 (36:56):
This is the tough one.
Speaker 1 (36:58):
I think Purdy he more accurate, and Jalen Hurts has
injuries and is clearly regressing. Now I've only got one
moment that Jalen Hurst has been good. That shame Stiken
call in the play stretch. But Jalen gets banged up.
Jalen is not a great pocket passer and he is regressing.
His turnovers are alarming.
Speaker 5 (37:20):
Is Kirk Cousins better than Brockberdy right now? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (37:23):
He just threw for five football fields. He's that team
is so young, he's baby sitting him on weekends.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
This might be my favorite segment of the season so far.
Speaker 3 (37:31):
Is Baker Mayfield better than Brockberdy?
Speaker 1 (37:36):
If you gave Baker Mayfield these weapons, he may hoist
a trophy. Baker Mayfield's better. He's a better talent, he
has a much better arm, much better arm, and Baker,
like Brock, is more athletic than people think.
Speaker 4 (37:51):
Mike Evans said, Godwin there Aten.
Speaker 1 (37:53):
Is Kyler Murray better than Bron I just watched last weekend.
I watched last weekend. What did you see last weekend?
Who was better last weekend, Kyler Murray was better with
the worst coach and Sanford Santa Clara Kyler's better?
Speaker 4 (38:11):
Is Aaron Rodgers better than Rock Perty.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
Today?
Speaker 7 (38:15):
I take Brock Purdy, Okay, so that to jump over
his desk?
Speaker 1 (38:20):
Come on, no, but I've been saying for two years
Aaron is way past front. Yeah yeah, I mean, if
you had any questions about Aaron Rodgers last weekend, he
threw three awful picks that I don't know.
Speaker 5 (38:32):
So I don't know how you're yelling at me.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
I'm not yelling.
Speaker 5 (38:36):
I'm very much by the way.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
Our staff didn't give you a bunch of dogs with fleas.
They put the best quarterbacks.
Speaker 5 (38:41):
In the league up.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
They didn't give me Andy Dalton here. So I mean, basically,
you know how much I love Darnold I for years
of like Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 4 (38:51):
Bo Nicks is just that was a shocker.
Speaker 5 (38:55):
Shocker.
Speaker 4 (38:56):
I felt like you tasted me with something. What the
hell's going on here?
Speaker 5 (39:01):
This is something you need?
Speaker 4 (39:02):
Games, mois you look a simple size look.
Speaker 5 (39:05):
At Rock Party.
Speaker 1 (39:05):
The last three years, I do have sixty one college
games in the first round a tross A college and
then and Sean Payton texting me about bon Nicks. You
are not understanding there. Maybe you grew up with wealth
and luxury, but when you're ass to carry a franchise,
it is much different than Hey, just sit down. Oh yeah,
(39:27):
that's a beautiful it's a it's a Genesis GV eighty coop.
The leather seating, the headlamps, the yeah. I mean everybody,
you put you into the GV Genesis eighty coop. Everybody
looks like a stud. Try driving that prelude down the street.
Speaker 3 (39:40):
The thing is, the funny thing is brock Purty probably
actually drives a prelude because that's all he can afford
because he's making like eight hundred thousand dollars. Everybody, including I,
thought you had turned the quarner man.
Speaker 4 (39:51):
I really did.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
You've been gassing up party on social media for a
couple of weeks now, and I thought, like, this is
gonna be a brock Purty landslide. I thought this is
gonna be remember when you said there was gonna be
like a red wave or something, a blue wave, whatever
it was. I thought this was gonna be a Brockberty wave.
And then I get this and it's just I mean,
come on, Colin.
Speaker 1 (40:08):
Hey, America's honesty broker, plays no favorites. By the way,
had they put Geno Smith on the board, would I
would have chose brock Ducks, Buckeyes horns Sooners Jamax picks
great last hour on Friday next
