You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
Here we go our three fifteen minutes. Dion Dawkins from
the Buffalo Bills we'll be joining us, and of the show,
Matt Moseley on the Cowboys and the situation in Dallas.
We've talked a lot about Chicago or New Orleans with
Mike McCarthy, we haven't talked about the Cowboys and what
they're gonna do. I don't buy Belichick. I don't think
it's a good enough job for Belichick. I thought at
(00:47):
Buffalo or Philadelphia lost in the first round, I thought
there's a chance Bill would take that job. But I
don't think Dallas is the play here. I really don't.
I mean, it's they just don't have enough personnel and
the division. You watched Jayden Daniels last night, and you
know Philadelphia's roster you're battling for third, the Dallas Cowboys
(01:08):
are for the next year or two. So let's just
give an update j Mac everybody. So it happened seven
minutes into our show, is that Mike McCarthy and the
Dallas Cowboys could not agree in a deal. Now, Mike
McCarthy changed agents to a guy named Don Yee, who
I kind of know. I've done an event with him
or two before. Smart Capable knows the market Tom Brady's agent.
(01:28):
My take is McCarthy wanted five years or a long
guaranteed deal if he was going to rebuild. This Cowboy
team is the worst running back room in the league.
They have one elite offensive playmaker. If Ceedee Lamb pulled
a hammy, they got nothing to work with the offensive
lines in a rebuild and was not good by the
end of the year. I like Micah Parsons. I've suggested
(01:50):
they should trade Micah Parsons and get a second first
round pick. It's a weaker draft at the top. You
could get a first round pick for Micah. You'd have
Dak Ceedee lambdack all that money. Nobody wants that contract
except Jerry Jones. You got to make Dak work. Get
a second first pick. I would go get that receiver
from Arizona if he was available. I would do something.
(02:11):
Move up if you have to. But you got to
get another weapon for this offense. And I think Mike McCarthy,
I think he would. I think he works almost anywhere.
I think he would be the best person arguably to
fix the Steelers. And I do think he is the
best person to fix the Bears. I think Chicago should
not take a risk. Even though I like Aaron Glenn,
(02:32):
Ben Johnson, Liam Collin, I think it's too big of
a lift. I want a guy that's had a medaling
owner in Jerry Jones, or a guy that's had a
difficult quarterback to deal with Aaron Rodgers. So we don't know.
Caleb Williams is a pretty emotional guy. Some say it
can be difficult. I don't know if that's true. I
don't think it is. But he's dealt with difficult Old
(02:52):
Brett Farv was difficult. Young Aaron Rodgers can be prickly.
He's dealt with some ego, He's dealt with some rigidity also,
Jerry Jones. Mike McCarthy's dealt with an owner who calls
himself the general manager. So Chicago. I mean, Mike comes
in with a wealth of experience. He's dealt with legendary
quarterbacks who are old, ascending star quarterbacks who you know,
(03:18):
get in their fields. He's dealt with an overpaid quarterback
who is regressing. He's dealt with a meddaling owner in
the Jones family. Mike's dealt with a lot. I'm not
taking a coordinator in Chicago. Ooh, I'm good on the chalkboard,
a whiteboard. Okay, great? Are you good with an old owner?
(03:39):
Are you good with a meddling president? Are you good?
That's what the Chicago Bear job is. Mike McCarthy is
uniquely qualified based on his life football resume. He is
qualified to work with a dysfunctional organization. These young coaches
are just trying to get bill the culture, get the
respect in the locker room. Mike's had to go upstairs,
(04:02):
deal with Jerry, play Kate, Jerry play the game, deal
with a big market media. Mike's qualified. Now he may
want the New Orleans job, which I don't think is
a bad job. I think the Bears. Chicago's different. So
I thought the best job was the Patriots. It was taken,
and I think once the Patriot job was taken by
Mike vrabel. I think Don Yee, Mike McCarthy's new agent said,
(04:25):
we got all the leverage in the world here, and
they do so. Mike McCarthy's not young and hip, he's
not old at an alpha. He's just a good football coach.
He's a B plus a minus football coach, and he's
an offensive coach. Jay McK and I argued about this
number one thing you gotta do. You not only got
(04:46):
to get Caleb Williams right, you gotta get the O
line right.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
And I don't.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
Trust defensive coaches and O lines. It took McDermott forever
in Buffalo. Pete Carroll struggled with this in Seattle. Tomlin
has strong uggled for years in Pittsburgh. If you look
at many of the old lines, look at Sean Payton
in Denver. By the end of his first year, it
was a top ten O line. He took it over.
(05:11):
It was a mess. This year it was very good.
Andy Reid rebuilt that puppy two or three times. Sean
mcvaye rebuilt his offensive line a couple different times. You
start looking at these offensive lines, it's a lot of
offensive coaches who have a feel and a sensibility for it.
Tomlin's old lines in Pittsburgh, they're as bad now as
(05:32):
they've been in five years. He can't figure it out.
So the Bears personnel is much better than Dallas offensive personnel.
It's not close. They have two tight ends. I like
they have three receivers. I like Roma Dunzel pop next year.
My guest DJ Moore Keenan Allen. I like their back swift.
I think they have good personnel, and I think their
(05:54):
old line in Chicago is better than how they performed.
But they had a defensive coach Matt eb I think
he's the Bears higher and Mike doesn't have a ton
of ego. You're not getting a lot of ego. And
again that he has dealt with quarterbacks who have maintenance.
(06:16):
Far of an errand different guys, but there are some
maintenance there. Not really with that at all. But well,
if Caleb is got a little maintenance, I don't know
that to be true. He's dealt with it. Here's Matt
Hasselback earlier on Mike McCarthy moving to the Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
It feels like Mike McCarthy's just kind of betting on himself.
You know, he looks out there, he realizes what he
is as a coach and what his resume is. And
then also, I think, probably most importantly, his resume working
with quarterbacks. His first ever quarterback coaching job in the
NFL was with the Kansas City Chiefs coaching Joe Montana.
And it started with Joe Montana and it runs right
(06:53):
through look it up. It's pretty impressive. Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers,
and so like, I think, if you think about the
jobs that are out there and the quarterback help that
needs to happen, Mike McCarthy's the perfect guy. And I
think when it comes to these negotiations as well, he's
not just thinking about himself. He's thinking about the job
security of his entire staff. And that's probably where he
(07:13):
kind of bowed up for his staff and said, hey, you.
Speaker 5 (07:16):
Know, we want more, We want more.
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Commitment than you're offering for the rest of the guys here.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
And I also, I think you have to look at
this one thing that's always been true in the NFL.
General managers have no leverage and coaches almost never do.
Great coaches get fired all the time. Belichick, Andy Reid,
I mean Marty Schottenheimer. I mean great coaches get let go.
(07:46):
It is so rare. The only time you have leverage
as a coach is when you're out of work. The
minute you're hired, the owner controls it. Mike McCarthy is
the rare coach that has a good job and has
total leverage over his owner. That and you know owners,
(08:06):
when they have leverage, they squeeze the coach and the GM.
So when you get leverage as a coach, use it.
Mike Vrabel used it, got more money in New England.
Harbaugh used it, got more money with the Chargers.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Use it.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
You get it very infrequently. And so Mike McCarthy, I
guarantee you. Once Rabel got that job, McCarthy said, think
about this. So Rabel gets the job, was it yesterday?
Early morning? He gets the job. So McCarthy sees that,
and then he watches Jaden Daniels last night. Do you
think it's a coincidence that on the morning that Rabel
(08:44):
gets the New England job and at night Jaden Daniels
is magical. Mike McCarthy's like timeout. He calls Donyie's agent
and says, we're not in the same stratosphere as Philadelphia
as a roster, and Jaden Daniels may be better than
Lamar Jackson. He may be Mahomes two point zero. I
got Dack on a sixty million dollars a year deal
(09:07):
and Donnie goes, I'm guessing, ask for everything, and Mike goes,
I want five years, six a coaching option, knowing he's
not going to get it because he looks up and goes, oh,
Caleb Williams, I don't have to pay him for four years.
Chicago today has got its dysfunction. It's a better roster
and arguably a better job than Dallas.
Speaker 6 (09:28):
Now.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
I don't know what Dallas is going to do. I
would look at Mike Tomlin. I think their personnel's better
on the defensive side. And Tomlin and McCarthy both have
a ring. Tomlin's more beloved, got more alpha, more people
kind of think he's the guy. But McCarthy's an offensive coach,
and this also needs to be considered. Mike McCarthy had
(09:50):
no bad offensive lines in Green Bay. He did a
good job. He didn't know was develop a great running game,
but they had good old lines and they protected their quarterback.
It's not just helping Caleb Williams. You got to get
that online right. They've been drafting on lineman for three
years in Chicago. It was bad. You gotta get that
thing right. And I trust McCarthy more than I would
(10:13):
the other coordinators. So Dion Dawkins of the Bills around
the corner more on that the Dallas Cowboys are looking
for a coach. Let me read this from Jordan Schultz.
This is hot off the press because the Cowboys waited
a week to move on for McCarthy. Jerry Jones also
missed the window to request interviews with candidates on a
buy like Ben Johnson, like Aaron Glenn. If Dallas wants
(10:39):
to talk to them, they'll now have to wait un
until Detroit season ends. A self inflicted setback by GM
Jerry Jones because they waited a week because they didn't
make a move, just like they waited on the Dak
contract and had to pay him more than he's worth,
(11:01):
and now because they waited on Mike McCarthy. If the
two best coordinator candidates out there are both in Detroit,
you don't get an interview either one until the season's over.
And by the way, I don't know, if Philadelphia can
go to Detroit and win, I know Washington's gonna struggle.
I don't think Philadelphia the way Jalen Hurts is playing
(11:23):
right now, I don't know. I mean, you might as
well just get out of the Aaron Glenn Ben Johnson business.
You're not getting them. You're not getting them.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
So that's absolutely brutal. I mean, he's just Jerry misplayed
it so badly, just like he did with Dak's contract.
Remember he should have signed it way earlier and ends
up paying more because he waited. And now he thought
he had Mike McCarthy in the bag and fumbled it
and now he's looking around and you can't interview. Oh
(11:52):
my gosh, that is embarrassing.
Speaker 1 (11:55):
So now will Jerry Jones, who's never loved paying his
coach is top dollar, doesn't feel like he does. Will
Jerry Jones overreach and go say Belichick save me?
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Not happening. No way is Belichick leaving North Carolina for Dallas,
no shot. Maybe he's got to overpay like Dion Sanders
or Sorrow.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
We don't know. If Sark's not taking that job, and
I would.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Need is who's taking this job? Liam Cohen maybe.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
I'm telling you, if I'm a candidate, I got one receiver,
I need to rebuild my own line, and I have
an owner who calls himself GM. I'm in a division
what looks like the next great superstar quarterback Jaden Daniels
and the best GM and arguably one of the top
three owners in Jeffrey Lourie in Philadelphia. I'm telling you
I would take the pay. You think I'm crazy on this.
(12:45):
I would take Craft and Drake Maye in a heartbeat.
Speaker 3 (12:48):
In a heartbeat, I just don't know who goes to Dalla,
who wants this job. My big thing is the owner
coming out after like what three days a week doing
radio interviews, meeting the media. That can't help. I think
that's a turnoff to a lot of coaches.
Speaker 1 (13:02):
I don't think he's gonna hire Liam Cullen. I think
Jerry's gonna overreach. Now, I keep your eye on Mike Tomlin.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
Pittsburgh would have to run off. No, No, Pittsburgh could
have great Were they gonna trade Mike Tomlin?
Speaker 1 (13:16):
Well, I mean it's didn't Gruden get traded.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Coach Well, Gruden's an interesting one because he had a
good run in Vegas, I believe, and then they traded
him to Tampa and then he won the Super Bowl
right the next year. Yeah, I don't. I don't see
that happening. Oh, this is this is delicious. This is
gonna be a fun week Colin.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
I just don't think it's a great job.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
I don't either.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
Marcus Freeman could where they go after him?
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Oh, I hey, Chicago may go after Marcus Freeman if
they're not.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
Report over the weekend that they are interested in re
talking to him.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Oh Marcus Freeman right now. No, he's preparing, has no
business being in the Natty.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
He is not going to be interviewed. I can't imagine.
Speaker 1 (13:58):
Preparing for them after the game. I mean, Marcus Freeman's
in the National Championship with one five star player and
a rigid academic umbrella. Yeah, I mean that that is
the coach of the year.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
A lot of money came in on Notre Dame in
the last twenty four hours. I don't know what to
make of that. I haven't. I don't have any money else.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
All the pressure in the world is on Ohio State.
Marcus Freeman is played with no pressure, and if you
watch the bills this weekend. Notre Dame's quarterback looks a
little like Buffalo's quarterback. His name is Riley. Leonard got
a little Josh Allen feel to him. I told you,
I'm betting. I'm betting Notre Dame really well, all the
(14:37):
pressures on, oh you know.
Speaker 3 (14:41):
So, did Texas unlock something? And how to slow down
this offense because Ohio State's offense didn't do much. I mean,
I have a twenty one to fourteen with you know what,
two minutes left in they go one minute left in
the game.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Let me just throw a name out there, Lincoln Riley.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
Isn't the buyout like seventy million dollars from USC?
Speaker 1 (15:00):
No, I mean they'll they'll figure something out. If Jerry
pate Jerry Jones, he bought a yacht worth four hundred
million dollars, I'm sure he could afford a USC football coach,
Lincoln Riley. I mean, Jerry's doing, Jerry's doing cameos on
land Man, He's got extra cash. Dean Dawkins next to Herd.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon eastern not am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
FS one and the iHeartRadio app Z.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
He'll join us in from Dallas. There's a lot of interest,
and we talked about Mike McCarthy bears. Who should Dallas hire.
I think you have to talk to Mike Tomlin. That
would be somebody I'm interested in. I'm not joking. Lincoln
Riley is from that area, and the truth is he
doesn't like recruiting much as far as I can tell,
but he knows how to coach. I think, listen, you're
(15:51):
out on Aaron glennon Ben Johnson, the two best coordinators.
You can't interview him until the Lions lose. You're out
on Vrabel and you're losing McCarthy. Oh, you're not gonna
get the best coordinator or the best coach. Belichick you
could take a swing. I don't think the job's good
enough for Belichick. Tomlin could go to TV. If I's
Mike Tomlin, I think I would probably go to TV
(16:12):
if he leaves Pittsburgh. It's no guarantee he would. In fact,
fifty to fifty, I'd say Mike Tomlin stays in Pittsburgh
because the Rooney family's pretty conservative with free agents. I
mean they brag in you know, in Pittsburgh gets a
big deal. You know, hey, we've only had three coaches
in fifty five years, which always feels like you're saying
I've only had three cars in fifty five years. Get
(16:33):
to a dealership. They've got GPS now in power steering.
You know, keys aren't even keys anymore. Like I kind
of feel like the Tomlin thing. Everybody sees it. It's
played out and he'll be a rock star on television.
But you know, Pittsburgh's probably not making a move on Mike.
Let's go to Deon Dawkins. He is the All Pro
left tackle, anchors an offensive line with a run game,
(16:55):
and he is joining us. Now, okay, let's star. First
of all, tell me as much as you can. What
do you feel like thirty six hours after a football game?
What do you feel like right now?
Speaker 7 (17:11):
Sure, I feel sore, tired, body's tired, but we feel good.
I feel good. You know, mentally, I'm happy because we
got a playoff win. But body is sore. Boddy is
definitely sore after a battle like yesterday and after a
playoff game.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
So when you face Baltimore coming up, listen, there's an
argument you're the two best teams. Right now in the AFC.
Is is it different preparing for Baltimore? Because you do
not want to give Derek Henry and Lamar the football
you want drives. There's almost an argument it's better to
score slowly than quickly. Are they difficult or different to
(17:51):
prepare for?
Speaker 7 (17:54):
I would say yes, like I could lie and say no,
it's no different.
Speaker 3 (17:58):
Da da da da da.
Speaker 7 (17:59):
But you have to prepare different for every opponent because
every opponent is different. We understand what Lamar has, we
understand what Derek Henry brings. We understand that Marlon is
having a great season. We understand, but that their D
line is continually getting after the quarterback. So yes, there's
definitely plans. There will definitely be plays to keep the
(18:23):
ball in our hands because we want the ball. Who
doesn't want the ball in their MVP's hand. I want
the ball in Josh Allen's hand. If I have to
stay on the football field for sixty minutes, Hey, it
is and what it is. But yes, you definitely have
to prepare in different notes, in different ways to keep
the ball with us instead of it with them. To
(18:46):
MVP and caliber players like you have to be smart
with what you're doing.
Speaker 1 (18:51):
You know, it's interesting you guys now have two really
good tight ends in a big time running game, Dion.
They always say offensive lineman would rather push than backpedal.
When you guys going these drives. This is the first
time you guys the last two years Dion have had
a big time top five running back. Tell me the
psychology of that going into a game knowing I don't
(19:12):
know if to backpedal as much.
Speaker 5 (19:15):
Ah man, I'm gonna tell you the truth.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
Uh, you never know.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Like we we.
Speaker 5 (19:22):
Backpedal just as much.
Speaker 7 (19:23):
But with a guy like James Cook and Johnson and
and and Ray, going forward is always easier than going
backwards for an offensive lineman. But in the sense like this,
when it's playoff like football, I'm gonna just tell you
the honest truth. And if I got a backpedal twenty
five thirty five, forty five fifty plays a game, I'm
(19:44):
for it. We're all for We understand what is at stake,
and whatever it's meant to be, we shall do it.
Speaker 5 (19:50):
But it's always good to go forward.
Speaker 7 (19:52):
It's easier to throw your weight forward than throw your
weight back. You know, yesh a, it's a it's a
good deal. But yeah, you know, driving that train is
definitely easier than you know, sliding that slid.
Speaker 1 (20:05):
When you look at the way you've been playing. In fact,
about the only time, the only times this year I
question you the Rams game, La basically played a perfect
football game and you guys had to fly three thousand
miles and they literally were perfect. It was one of
those games. We said on the air the next day,
(20:25):
I'm like, I don't think the Rams can play better.
Outside of that, you guys have had a streak when
you've played really well. Go to your entire Buffalo career.
Is this the best you've ever felt about your team
at this point in the season.
Speaker 7 (20:42):
Yes, this is the best at that I felt. This
is the best that the team has felt. This is
the best at I've seen. Josh, this is the best
that I've seen. McDermott, this is the best that I've seen.
My coordinator. And with having a quarterback with his head
calm and his head on, you know, just calm, cool
(21:02):
and collect all day every day, that takes a big
toll on the team. He comes in into work every
day positive. Everybody is just in a positive streak. I
would call it, you know, controlled excitement, controlled or consistent execution,
Like everybody is just at a consistent pace.
Speaker 5 (21:23):
And this is definitely the.
Speaker 7 (21:24):
Best that I've seen, the best that I've felt. This
is the best that I've seen this Buffalo bill football team.
Be prepare and honestly ring that bell when that bell
is ring, and when it's called for us too and
to ring it. It's been going in the right direction
because everybody has been flying on a consistent altitude and
I'm happy for you know, James is up, be Josh
(21:46):
is up, be McDermott, the old line, the D line, everybody.
Speaker 5 (21:50):
Is doing what they're supposed to do.
Speaker 7 (21:52):
So, yes, this is the best Buffalo Bill's team I
have ever been a part of in my eight seasons
that i've been here.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
By the way, Brady the offensive coordinator may leave, may
you know, may whatever do you tell me from the
play calling? How is he different your offensive coordinator than
previous coordinators? Is there a different tempo with him? What
are his tendencies compared to other coordinators in Buffalo?
Speaker 7 (22:18):
Well, see, Brady's not going nowhere. He's not going nowhere.
He's staying with the boys. I'm calling it right now.
He's staying with the boys. But why what makes him
different is he's just on our level.
Speaker 5 (22:33):
We're close in age. He's he's he's.
Speaker 7 (22:36):
Like he just understands, like he just understands like that.
Speaker 5 (22:39):
He's a flooraboy.
Speaker 7 (22:40):
So he has that that hip to him, and he
has that upbeat and and he's just a consistent flow.
Speaker 5 (22:46):
He understands that he's not perfect. He comes in and
too be ends. He tells on his self.
Speaker 7 (22:52):
He says, look, this is not just on you guys,
that this one was on me and for a group
of men that's trying to execute every level and at
every moment of a football game. He takes ownership when
it's his time to take ownership. And because he does,
we respect it. And because we respect it, we want
to play for him in a way that we not
(23:14):
to have never played for another coordinator. But he makes
it easy to play for him as well as the
on line coach. And like everybody does what they're supposed
to do. It's not just oh, it's the player's fault. Oh,
it's you guys fault. Oh, like you know it could
have been this, but you guys ain't do that. No,
he understands that I could have did this better or
I did this better, and this is why and we won.
(23:36):
This is why, and we lost. Let's come together and
let's pray about it, and let's keep it pushing. That's
what we respect the most from Joe, and he consistently
does it, and we just tip our hat to it,
like you know what, we rock with you, Joe, And
that's literally what it is.
Speaker 5 (23:54):
But I'm gonna call it right now. He's staying with
the boys.
Speaker 7 (23:57):
He loves Buffalo, he loves the Wings, and he loves
being Joe Brady.
Speaker 5 (24:00):
For Josh Allen, I'm calling it right now.
Speaker 6 (24:02):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (24:02):
He also loves Dion Dawkins, James Cook and Cage, Josh Allen.
A lot of things to like with that Buffalo offense.
My man, get rest, be ready for next weekend. We
love having you on. Thanks Dion.
Speaker 5 (24:14):
My dog appreciates you. Brother.
Speaker 1 (24:15):
Oh as ol was he is a great one. And yeah,
I mean if five there's an offensive of course, like
Ben Johnson and Brady, be careful what job you take.
You're gonna get one Lions offensive line in your career.
Ben Johnson can go anywhere. He'll never have a better
O line and run game than Detroit and there are
no other Josh Allen's on the market. You gotta sit
(24:38):
there sitting You're gonna have a great pension and a
great career in Buffalo. Asking Josh Hallen to put the
cape on every Sunday, that is a job be very
used with discretion leaving Buffalo, and they do have good wings.
I told you my wife years ago had to travel uh,
Minneapolis and Buffalo and Rochester, and she always said, nicest
(24:58):
people in the world Buffalo.
Speaker 3 (25:01):
I don't know if I told you this. My wife
was in sales before we had kids, and she would
have to go to Buffalo and she came back twice
and was like, I could see us living in Buffalo.
It's amazing there. It's beautiful.
Speaker 8 (25:11):
Now.
Speaker 3 (25:12):
She didn't go there in the death of winter.
Speaker 1 (25:14):
You know that.
Speaker 3 (25:16):
Pretty quickly, I was like, that's not happening. Bit, we're
not doing it.
Speaker 1 (25:19):
You can't just live your whole life in places where
you get to wear a tank top in April.
Speaker 3 (25:23):
But I look good in tank tops, so I rocked them.
Speaker 1 (25:25):
Not as good as you think, maybe cow j Mack
with the news.
Speaker 3 (25:33):
This is the headline news that jab must have been
because you're up so upset. We're about to talk about
bo Nix's failure.
Speaker 1 (25:41):
Listen.
Speaker 3 (25:44):
They took a seven to nothing lead earlier, Oh boy,
here we go, and then they did nothing the rest
of the way. It wasn't quite the mac Jones at
Buffalo game I predicted, but it was in the same ballpark. Nevertheless, afterward,
bo Nix was optimistic about Denver's future going forward.
Speaker 1 (26:00):
It's a lot to grow from, a lot to build from.
I'm excited where we are.
Speaker 8 (26:03):
Like I said, I'm excited to be here at this
time because there's you know, our trajectory is going up
and I'm excited for it. A lot of things, you know,
we have out in front of us, a lot of
look to look forward to, which you know, I'm pumped about.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
He'll be fine. That was not a winnable game, j MC.
Not a winnable game.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
Not to pick knits here or go after people. But
Patrick Sartan had a rough one huh, blatant holding of
Kinkaid in the end zone. Referee standing and put Away
magically doesn't see it. Sartan got cooked by Curtis Samuel
on that long touchdown.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Curtis did have quite a day.
Speaker 3 (26:40):
Josh Allen was picking on the safety number six lock,
who's one of the worst safeties in the league.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
You know, we we we all knew Denver.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
Yeah, they over a cheat.
Speaker 1 (26:50):
No, and by the way, so did the Chargers. They're
gonna be fine.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
Well, you know every year three or four teams don't
make the playoffs again, Chargers already identified.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
The Chargers need another five players. They'll get him in
the draft. Harball out of college. How about Harbaugh's draft
this year? Everybody was good. They got two corners in
the fifth round. Are good?
Speaker 3 (27:10):
Well, some Chargers fans are upset about not taking neighbors
and taking Joe Walton Stead whatever it is.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
Joe Walt had a bad game. He's a very good player.
He's a rookie tackle.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
If I ask you now, January a lot to happen
draft free agency coaches. We already identified Steelers are not
going back to the playoffs next year. Do you think
Denver is.
Speaker 1 (27:34):
It's hard to take three teams from the same division.
It'll be a struggle.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
Nicks was good. We saw a CJ. Stroud have a
great freshman or rookie year and then regress big time.
I don't We'll see what happens with Nicks.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
I trust the Chargers more. I think I think I
think Herbert Harbaugh.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
Yeah, now listen, we like Sean Payton. I'm sure we'll
see him at the super Bowl. Not his best game.
Speaker 1 (27:59):
I think it's hard when you on the road and
you know you have the second best team and you
gotta take chances. You gotta fake punce. Fake fake was great,
you got it. I mean, you're not gonna go in
there and just go toe to toe. You're gonna take
big swings. That's just the reality of Green Bay going
into Philly missing Christian Watson and Jordan Loves bang up.
Jordan Love's trying to make plays. You fundel the opening kickoff,
(28:19):
so you're behind the eight ball. So you just I mean,
I'm gonna defend Jordan Love, Herbert bow Nicks. You're on
the road against a better team. I mean, you just
got to go out and take swings.
Speaker 3 (28:27):
Now, there is the alternative. Dallas got smashed in the
playoffs last year and they follow that up with an
awful year, So somebody who made the playoffs this year
could absolutely.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
I think it's Pitts straighter. I think Pittsburgh's going backwards.
Speaker 3 (28:40):
Don't disagree. Next up, let's go back to Commander's Bucks,
which was surprisingly best game of the weekend. Tampa was
up four with twelve minutes left, and then this Baker happened,
like a jet sweep. He tried to hand it off
to McMillan. Don't I can't really tell who's that on.
McMillan is super fast. They credited Baker with the fumble.
It gave Washington great field, as shouldn't. Of course, they
(29:00):
end up with the go ahead touchdown. Here's Baker on
that pumble.
Speaker 6 (29:05):
Yeah, I mean it just comes back to me just
timing it up correctly. First one all year that happened
on so obviously timing of it not great. Being backed
up defensive, just done a hell of a job giving
us the ball another fourth down stop and stay unfortunate
for that's that falls on me.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
We talk a lot about Will Levis gives the football
away and sometimes you get Dodgers League of Giveaways, right
who Baker Mayfield?
Speaker 1 (29:33):
Yeah, Baker's always I mean Baker gives the ball away.
Speaker 3 (29:37):
That's hit for last in total, I guess first in interception.
Speaker 1 (29:41):
No, Baker, there's this is the limitation. Baker tends to
play on a motion. He can be reckless. He he's
a gunslinger. I mean, he's like a less talented Brett Farr.
That's who he is, and that's fine. That's what Tampa needed.
I think he fits Tampa.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
But he didn't have a bad game. Let's be clear.
That sounds.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
I think sometimes sometimes you lose because somebody else is magical.
It's not on Baker. I mean, the bottom line is
it not every loss there's a big somebody to blame.
Jayden Daniels is otherworldly.
Speaker 3 (30:10):
Baker was fine, and again you don't want to get
into the play by play, but Tampa fans are unhappy.
There was a play call on a third down where
they tried to Baker run it stuffed and then they
went through it. Just it was like, what do we
do with Bucky Irving is cooking? Didn't all have a
tough one for Tampa. Washington is going to Denver eight
and I'm sorry Detroit eight and a half point underdogs.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
I like Detroit.
Speaker 3 (30:32):
It'll be Washington's third straight road game.
Speaker 1 (30:34):
Yeah, I like Detroit. I think Detroit's gonna roll.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
Well, I did on my pod. I looked into some
of the numbers. Detroit has really struggled defending running quarterbacks.
Josh Allen had a day Anthony Richardson Baker Mayfield in
the in the wind, so that could be an issue
for Detroit. Remember you know where I'm headed right Okay,
(30:58):
final story college football in Ohio State. How about that
win over Texas Friday night? Really thrilling stuff. They will
face Notre Dame in the National Championship a week from today.
The game was sealed on this incredible Jack Sawyer strip
sack of his former roommate. What a story. Quinn Ewers
took it eighty three yards of the house for the
(31:18):
g game clinching touchdown. That was a phenomenal play by
Jack Sawyer gets the sack, scoops it up and races.
I think he said he was going to black out
around the thirty yard line, he was so exhausted. It's
been quite a run since that Michigan lost for the Buckeyes.
Speaker 1 (31:34):
Yeah, it's you know, they look at it as the
worst day of the year Buckeye fans. It was actually
the jet fuel that this program needed. And they were
very conservative in that game, and since then they're not
as conservative. They're throwing the ball down the field. Hugget
hugget Jack sor he is justin.
Speaker 3 (31:52):
When you can win. When Jeremiah Smith has one catch
for three yards, that's a loaded team.
Speaker 5 (32:00):
They are stacked.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
Yeah, I mean, I think Notre Dame is going to
keep it close.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
I don't know how they move the ball offensively, count
like that that front for all.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
I think the game is going to be very low scoring. Now,
Ohio State may pull away late, but I think in
the first half bet the under bet low scoring. I
think it's I think it's thirteen ten at half or
like I mean, and literally ten seven at half, and
then I think Ohio State's too good not to eventually score.
So they made back door it. You know they make well,
(32:29):
they went back door it. They'll be leading. They'll Ohio State,
I think, will probably in the end feel like the
better team somewhere in the fourth. But I think Notre
Dame will hang around a lot.
Speaker 3 (32:39):
Let's let's not forget if not for a Drew Aller
awful decision and bad interception, we don't even know if
Notre Dame wins that game.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
You know what, you know what Notre Dame does makes
quarterbacks make bad decisions. It's funny. It's coincidental. Every time
they play a team, quarterbacks make bad decisions. Interesting, we look.
Speaker 3 (32:57):
At that, we watch that game together.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
I don't know, is it how big is that number?
Speaker 3 (33:00):
You know what?
Speaker 1 (33:02):
Notre Dame's offense isn't real splashy, so maybe it won't
get a great rating.
Speaker 3 (33:06):
But not even with Josh Allen under seven.
Speaker 1 (33:09):
I said, there's things he does that look a little
like Josh Allen, like run.
Speaker 3 (33:15):
Through the middle, white and running. He's more Daniel Jones
than Josh Allen.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
Okay, that hurts j Mack with the news.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Well that's the news, and thanks for stopping by the
Herd Line.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Wait, we're gonna go to Dallas check in on the
Cowboys next.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays

in the world.
Speaker 9 (33:55):
We have a lot of fun talking about the stories
behind the stories in the world of sports and pop
culture that well, other shows don't seem to have the
time to discuss.
Speaker 10 (34:03):
And the fact that we've been friends for the last
twenty years and still work together, I mean that says something, right.
Speaker 1 (34:08):
So check us out.
Speaker 9 (34:09):
We like to get you involved too, take your phone calls,
chop it up.
Speaker 10 (34:13):

Fox Sports Radio, maybe the most interactive show on planetar.
Speaker 9 (34:18):
Be sure to check out Cavino and Rich live on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app from five to
seven pm Eastern two to four Pacific, and if you
miss any of the live show, just search Kovin on
Rich wherever you get your podcasts, and of course on
social media. That's Covino and Rich.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
Well, he's been hosting the Doomsday podcast for years and years,
really really good Cowboys podcast. He's been a reporter since
two thousand and three, cover in Dallas in the NFL.
He's Matt Mosley, he's my friend, and he's joining us
here at the end of the show today for ten minutes.
And this is important stuff. So first of all, are
you surprised by it? You usually have kind of your
finger on the pulse to it when you heard the news,
(34:54):
Did it shock you?
Speaker 2 (34:57):
No?
Speaker 11 (34:57):
No, either way would not have shocked me. But I
thought Jerry was trying to get Mike to sort of
break up with him. This is where this thing was
headed the whole way. And so you know, the players
and Dak, they were all sort of lobbying for Mike.
But in the end, I'm not real surprised because I
looked up there at those stands and boy, that's the
(35:20):
one thing they'll get Jerry's attention.
Speaker 5 (35:22):
Even on Thanksgiving, people were not coming to the games.
Speaker 11 (35:25):
It's almost never happens with the Cowboys, and so I
think he wanted to.
Speaker 5 (35:30):
Make a move, but he tried to.
Speaker 11 (35:32):
Like salvage something with McCarthy and offer him some real
short term deal, and I think McCarthy said I've had enough.
I think McCarthy was incredibly uncomfortable going into the season
on the last year of his contract and for his staff,
and he stated that, and you know, and then all
the injuries happened and everything like that. But I think
both sides are fine parting ways at this point.
Speaker 1 (35:55):
So listen. They're not going to get Aaron Glenn or
Ben Johnson because they can't interview them because Jerry put
this thing off. They can't interview him until the Lion
season is over, and that could be you know, February,
early February. So you may not get the best two coordinators.
Vrabels off the market. You don't have McCarthy. Where they go,
where do you think they lean?
Speaker 11 (36:16):
Well, always look for the retread always, and Jerry has
to feel comfortable here. And I'm telling you he loves
he loves John Gruden. I mean Pete Carroll. He mentioned
to me, I might go after somebody that has Super Bowls.
He loved that about McCarthy that he had to won
super Bowl. So look around for coaches that have Super Bowls.
(36:39):
Also look at Cliff Kingsbury, who also just won a
playoff game.
Speaker 5 (36:43):
Jerry loves him. They have a relationship.
Speaker 11 (36:45):
But you always have to look at Jerry right now
is on the phone with people outside the organization. That's
what people don't think. They're like, who's he listening to?
There's no telling who he's calling right now. It could
be Barry Switzer. He loves taking advice from like his
old buddies and people outside the organization. So he's calling around,
he's looking. But he does have a list, and he
(37:06):
always has told me that I've got the list, the
list will be ready and we'll see where he goes.
But any of those young assistants you talked about, none
of those makes sense. None of those, None of those
feel like Jerry. He's not comfortable except one, and that
is Kellen Moore because.
Speaker 5 (37:23):
Of the familiarity with him being with.
Speaker 11 (37:26):
The Cowboys and calling plays already having a relationship with Dak.
Speaker 5 (37:29):
That's the only.
Speaker 11 (37:30):
One of these sort of youngish coordinators who has any
sort of shot at this job.
Speaker 5 (37:35):
And I don't know if he'd want it.
Speaker 1 (37:37):
The do you think Mike McCarthy. I think Mike McCarthy
fits in Chicago. You know his personality. Do you think
he'd like to go back and tangle with Green Bay?
Where do you think Mike goes?
Speaker 5 (37:51):
Yeah, I think Chicago would be perfect for him.
Speaker 11 (37:54):
I think New Orleans is the other one because Mickey
loomis the GM longtime relationship. He called plays there. You know,
I think he loves that organization. But I think the
thought of having a young quarterback and turning him in
the right direction. He's got all sorts of ability. I
obviously messed it up completely this year, and I think
(38:17):
he would. I think he would love the opportunity to
do that. So I think Chicago's a good one. I
think the Saints are a really good one. And you know,
it's amazing that he has this opportunity.
Speaker 3 (38:28):
Though.
Speaker 11 (38:28):
You go seven and ten, get bounced out of Dallas,
and suddenly he's like some sort of hot name. I mean,
who would have ever thought? And he ends up with
leverage over Jerry only Jerry. Let's that happen to have
a coach go seven to ten and end up in.
Speaker 5 (38:43):
A bad bargaining.
Speaker 11 (38:44):
You know, Jerry gets all the credit in the world
for being these like this great negotiator, but sometimes there's
no evidence of it, and in this case, there is
zero evidence of him being a good negotiator.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
Listen, Jaden Daniels on a rookie contract looks spectacular, has
got a much better roster. I don't I predicted this
would be a non playoff team that would slowly regress.
I didn't know Dak would get hurt. I think they
are two drafts away with Dak's contract you're not going
to do it in free agency. You tell me how
(39:16):
good is this roster?
Speaker 11 (39:19):
Well, it's just they don't want to do anything in
free agency, and that's the problem they don't see. They
see their only answer is hitting on draft picks, and
well that's just you know, they've done pretty well drafting,
but their reluctance to do anything in free agency hurts them.
Speaker 5 (39:35):
Now.
Speaker 11 (39:35):
They always believe, and this is what you're you're all
off season. We believe in Dak. They paid him this
huge money. They think he's going to come back. They
think he's going to be great. He does have a
star receiver. They've got to get running back, right, I mean,
it was a joke that they didn't. They waited till
like eight or nine games in the season to pick
a feature back, and then they actually started running with Dubdell.
(39:57):
So they you know, that's where the league is going
this year, and so I think they But McCarthy's gone.
That will help in one respect because he's never loved
committing to the run. So you have to find somebody.
And plus Colin they could lean on that defense. You know, Parsons.
They got to figure out what they do with Lawrence.
But those defensive linemen, if they can resign anybody actually
(40:19):
came on this season quietly, the D line and then
Micah came back.
Speaker 5 (40:25):
They put together some pretty good games.
Speaker 3 (40:28):
You know.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
Finally, you know Jerry's patterns and trends. Does he want
to do this quickly? I mean the Patriots took about
five minutes to hire Vrabel. I mean, I think was
barely dry on the press release with your odd mail.
Jerry gonna do this quickly, You're going to be patient now.
Speaker 11 (40:45):
He didn't want to do it quickly because he likes
to sort of own you know, these next week or
so of the playoffs.
Speaker 5 (40:52):
He loves people talking about the Cowboys.
Speaker 11 (40:55):
I'd be really surprised if this thing happened in the
next three or four days. This thing out, you know,
he'll think about all these candidates. He's talking to people
getting input right now, but it'll have to be someone
with head coaching experience or Kellen Moore.
Speaker 5 (41:12):
I mean, it's really where it's going to go.
Speaker 11 (41:14):
And the reason I bring up Gruden is because I
think Jerry loves the idea of kind of putting it
to Roger Goodell. You know, you remember with Gruden basically
gets bounced out of the league for those emails and
everything that came up. I think Jerry would love being
the one to bring him back, and so don't discount
(41:34):
Jerry's sort of pettiness in that area.
Speaker 1 (41:37):
Wow, that is something else. Matt Moseley, Doomsday podcket, my friend.
It's great to see you. Usually your future so bright,
you wear shades, but this time we get to see
the whole face. And it's a quite stunning to look
at you in your in your glory and you're kicking button.
I love seeing you, buddy. There you go. Oh, I
like that. Now that's the studious academic scilass.
Speaker 11 (42:00):
Matt.
Speaker 1 (42:00):
Mostly I like that too, Yes, exactly, all right, buddy,
good seeing you.
Speaker 2 (42:07):
Good to see you.
Speaker 1 (42:08):
Matt Moseley does a great job. Funny guy. If you
ever look at the Cowboy press conference, he's always the
guy with the dark shades, not him for years. Well
you heard it there, Matt knows it. Matt. You know
he told you he's not going to do one of these.
You know he's gonna want reed treads. John Gruden's fascinating.
He's now doing some stuff with barstools, so he's kind
of resurrecting his career. Well, I mean it's something he's
(42:31):
out there, you know, I mean it.
Speaker 3 (42:34):
It's you're as likely to get hired as the head
coach of the Cowboys as John Gruden. It's this is
just some of these names I'm seeing floated.
Speaker 1 (42:44):
What do you see and floated? Throw it to me.
Speaker 3 (42:46):
Jason Witten, Jerry Jones loves him, smart guy, longtime cowboy,
he was smart. Okay, go for I gout listen, go
back's another one, give me another one. Well, you just
put Lincoln.
Speaker 1 (42:57):
Riley out there, and the people I didn't put it
out there. I just said he doesn't.
Speaker 3 (43:01):
Losing their minds over eat?
Speaker 1 (43:03):
Are they?
Speaker 3 (43:03):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (43:04):
What are they saying?
Speaker 3 (43:05):
I mean, listen, Cowboys fans in general are a mess.
Speaker 1 (43:08):
I think Cowboy fans, I'll defend them. Remember this year
there was a poll during the summer and they ask
Cowboy fans, can you win a Super Bowl the next
five years? And say eighty percent of the fans right, No,
they're not delusion.
Speaker 3 (43:20):
Only eighty percent.
Speaker 1 (43:21):
Well, I mean, wasn't fans or fans? I mean, but
I think Cowboy fans are tired of Jerry.
Speaker 3 (43:26):
I mean, honestly, I think the Jets job is bad.
With Aaron Rodgers, I would probably say it's at least
as good as the Cowboy.
Speaker 1 (43:33):
So the Jets roster well is significantly better than the Cowboys,
I think.
Speaker 3 (43:38):
Remember what I asked you during the break about it,
would you trade for this certain guy on the Jets?
Don't say his name yet. There's a little more than
smoke around that.
Speaker 1 (43:46):
Right now, I'm telling you Jets fans are we're gonna
blow up their roster with like a good play. Come on,
we got interesting openings. Cowboys, Bears, Jets. It's usually the Jags.
Every fifteen minutes, Jags are out there too. Oh yeah,
it has allus
