Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Oh we got a Monday show. We got a Monday show.
We're live in Chicago. It's The Herd wherever you may be,
however you may be listening, whatever the platform is. Sean
mcpather rams, Lincoln Riley of the Trojan stops by. They

(00:47):
got a big one with Oregon. Colin right, Colin wrong?
One hour from now. Jmax. If you have been down
on Kansas City all year and it appears you were right,
you know this is this to be the best. You
gotta beat the best.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
You may have to scrap them where Colin was wrong? Segment,
What are you gonna mention the blazing five big guy.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
Well, we'll get to that. We'll get to that later.
So let's start with this. That was the kind of
game that we have been watching for the last five years.
Denver and Kansas City and you had this sinking feeling
Kansas City would figured it out. Andy Reid was off
a bye, they got a couple of trick plays, They'll
figure it out. But it was actually Denver that I

(01:31):
felt would win the game. And Denver manipulated Kansas City
in that final drive. Kansas City's now lost to the Jags,
the Eagles, the Bills, Denver, the Chargers, all playoff teams
today one to five against playoff teams and they're wins, Raiders, Commanders, Giants,
and whatever the Lions are these days. Listen, some of
this is you pay a quarterback big money, you have

(01:54):
a limited roster, I mean Sam Darnold, team friendly deal,
Seattle's young. Look at that roster, hikes the track team.
Seven of the top eight cap hits in the NFL
right now at quarterback five hundred or worse. And the
Chiefs have done a really good job to kind of
manipulate it. So Mahomes isn't a huge cap pit. But

(02:17):
Travis Kelcey, he's on his last legs. Chris Jones is
like the sixty second ranked defensive lineman. Everybody at the
top of that salary chart there doesn't feel the same
Mahomes doesn't feel the same. So Denver's offensive line clearly better,
Denver's run game better, Denver's pass rush not close better.

(02:40):
Denvers secondary pretty good. Denver's wide receiver group, I think
it's underrated. I like their wide receivers can be Franklin
Now and bo nicksconnect Mems Courtland Sutton, the young kid
out of Illinois like they got they got dudes. I
watched that game, and you watch that game, it felt
like to me when Denver got the ball at the end,

(03:03):
they they with bow Knicks on that rookie deal and
all that length, a wide receiver and that dominant offensive
line in that pass rush, they had more options and
we all saw it coming. I didn't think it was
a controversial take when I said the dynasty's over for
Kansas City. I said that in August, and I said,
Broncos are gonna win the division. You watched it last night.

(03:23):
I watched it. Denver has better units, better groups. I mean,
Mahomes is going to be better than bow Knicks. But
I don't know. They were in eleven to one score
games last year. What does that mean? The Margins are
getting thinn They just won all of them this year.
They're losing all of them. But I mean Sean Payton,
the way he talked bow Knicks, the way he played

(03:45):
the pass rush. It wasn't disrespectful to Kansas City. But
I didn't see any fear. I think Denver. I think
Sean Payton, I think bow Knicks. I think Denver knows
they have more good players than Kansas City. I think
they know they have a better pass rush, they have
the best call, they have deeper wide receivers, they have
the better offensive line, and I think Denver knows it.
I mean Andy Reid off a bye, scored nineteen points

(04:08):
with Patrick Mahomes off a bye, So you pay the
quarterback big money like in Buffalo. I don't love the
Bills roster. I think Kansas City's done a good job
to manipulate the Mahomes salary. But I'm watching Denver and
you're watching Denver. Denver's got more good players, and I
Chris Jones had a sack yesterday doesn't feel the same.

(04:31):
He's an interior defensive lineman. Those guys age quickly tight
ends outside of George Kittle age quickly, so that final
drive to me, felt very Mahomes esque. Bo Nicks had
pass protection. He did use the run game. He was running,
he was twitchy, he was nimble, he had options, a

(04:52):
lot of good wide receiver choices. I mean, it didn't
look like a fluke to me at Labrial, Denver and
Sean and officially the team to beat in the AFC West,
and yesterday they had the Chiefs feel. They manipulated the clock,
they controlled the outcome. That's what Kansas City did the

(05:13):
previous half decade. Here's bo Nicks after.

Speaker 4 (05:17):
If you want to be the best, you gotta beat
the best.

Speaker 5 (05:19):
And you know, if you're some say, if you're scared
to go to church, if you're gonna play this sport,
if you're gonna play this game for too long, you
can't really be intimidated, or.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
There's really no sense in going on there.

Speaker 5 (05:31):
If you don't believe you're gonna win and eventually get
to the top, then I feel like you just waste
so much time.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Okay, So the Chicago Bears are seven and three, and
here's what I saw yesterday. I heard this, Well, it's
not really sustainable. All right, let me look at something
real quick with you. They were better than the Vikings
on third down they rushed for one hundred and forty yards,

(05:58):
they never turned it over, and they dominated time of possession.
That feels sustainable to me. Well, it's ugly. Well, Denver's
winning ugly, Philly's winning ugly. The Jags always win ugly.
Chicago's got the second best rushing attack in the league,
fourth and total offense top ten in yards per play.

(06:19):
Those are the numbers Vegas cares about. That feels legitimate
to me. Their number one issue is actually, and you
have this with young teams. You saw yesterday with Seattle,
You've seen it with green Bay. The problem is too
many penalties. Well, you got a new coach, he's young,
got a new quarterback. With this coach who's young, he's young.
They make mistakes, but you can clean that up. You

(06:40):
can't create a lousy run game and turn it into
a great run game by Thanksgiving. I can take a
team that has too many penalties and clean it up
by Thanksgiving. So, I mean Chicago's won seven of eight.
It feels totally legit. Who's winning beautifully? Buffalo? No, I

(07:01):
mean I see a young coach, I see a young quarterback.
They got a lot of I mean, they're great in
the fourth quarter. It feels very much like Denver to me,
does it not? Young quarterback, great play caller, nice offensive weapons.
I mean the Bears defense. They're getting Jalen Johnson back
is the cornerback, but even without him, they take the

(07:22):
ball away. So look at their division for the Bears,
who say, people say it's not sustainable. The Vikings are
lost offensively, Green Bay wins, but their identity is funky.
I'm not sure Matt Laflor wants to run, but they can't,
so they pass reluctantly. But it works in Detroit again,

(07:44):
Ben Johnson left that offense. Detroit's offense is not the same.
They hired within the organization. Not a fan of that.
It doesn't look good. So I mean Chicago and Caleb.
There's too many penalties. They're flawed. But I mean, here's
what they do. Tell me if this stuff is sustainable.

(08:04):
They run the ball as well as almost anybody in
the league. They don't turn it over yet they take
it away from you. And they're excellent playing from behind,
which is always been to have and have Nott's line
of demarcation. Can you play leading? Can you play trailing?
So when you have a great run game. You can
play with elite. You can you can kill the clock.

(08:25):
The question is great run teams often this was always
the knock on Lamar Jackson. Do they play well from
behind those Chicago does? So I don't get the is
it sustainable? This league MUSHes everybody together. The team that
always wins close games is Philadelphia. Did you think that
was art last night? You thought that was pretty Philadelphia

(08:47):
only wins ugly, So, I mean, I Ben Johnson. The
other thing they do they've eliminated the negative plays. We
talked about that all off season. Remember when Belichick talked
about Brady. What's the best part about Brady? He had
no negative plays with Tom? He didn't say Tom's arm
or size. Yeah, with Tom, we had no negative plays.

(09:07):
It was always second and four, second, three. It was
never second twenty two. So Chicago's eliminated the worst thing
they did last year, all the negative plays. They don't
do them. And I know this sounds very remedial and simple.
Here's what the Bears do really well. They go forward.
They moved the ball forward a lot, and that's what

(09:30):
Belichick said about Brady. His favorite thing is, yeah, we
got rid of it quickly. But didn't take sacks, we
didn't have pre stat penalties. So Chicago's got some things
to clean up. But to me, when you say it's
not sustainable, they run it, they take it away, they
don't turn it over. A durable quarterback great in the
fourth quarter. What's not sustainable. Here's Caleb about another w.

Speaker 6 (09:51):
It doesn't matter when, it doesn't matter, how, it doesn't
matter who, it doesn't We got the guys, we got
the coaches live in the known, and so when our
moment comes, when their moment comes, whoever it is on
the team will make the play. And so, like I said,
we gotta we gotta get better throughout the game. But
you know, when it when it comes down to it,

(10:11):
we know we're gonna make the plays at the right moment,
at the right time, and we're gonna, you know, we're gonna,
we're gonna, we're gonna go win the game.

Speaker 1 (10:18):
I watched that game yesterday and my takeaway is Chicago
deserved to win. Chicago is better on third down, Chicago
dominated time of possession. Chicago's quarterback is more talented. Like
Minnesota doesn't know what they did, what they are. Had
they lost that game, you'd have felt like, man, they
gave one away yesterday. Chicago was the better team with

(10:38):
the better identity, the better quarterback, and right now a
coach who I love this about Ben Johnson. This is
where he and Sean McVay are similar. Everybody thinks McVeigh
and Ben Johnson h they're clever, Yeah, but it fundamentally
they're tough guys. They like to run the ball and
dominate time of possession and play clean football. Rams don't

(11:00):
a lot of mistakes. Caleb doesn't throw a lot of picks.
That run game. First thing, Ben Johnson did guard center guard,
not sexy guard center guard. Let's develop a run game.
They did, they have and it's sustainable. Okay, Seahawks Rams
game was nuts, and mcvayzon it was just absolutely nuts.

(11:24):
The fact that Seattle was coming down to win the
game on a kick with four Sam Darnold ugly picks,
three of them really ugly, is remarkable. We'll talk about
that next.

Speaker 2 (11:35):

Speaker 1 (12:48):
Sean mcvaig coming up later this hour. What a wild,
weird game. These are such different teams, although they're both
well coached, and they're both really athletic, and the MS
defense is young. Seattle's entire roster is young. And I
think the best way to put this, I feel like
the Rams are the cleaner tactician. They're the Floyd Mayweather.

(13:14):
The Seahawks are Tyson. You're swinging from the heels, okay,
but yesterday, I mean, how can Sam Darnold throw four
picks and they're going for the win? If Stafford throws
four picks, they get blown out. Why Stafford is older,
he's a cleaner quarterback. He hasn't had a pick since September.

(13:35):
They don't have penalties. It is a very mature offense
that's well coached, very efficient. I've been saying for weeks
it's the cleanest team in the league. Seattle is the
younger crazier brother who's super talented but does stuff sometimes
that's way reckless. But Darnald's ability, he's so athletic to

(13:55):
add lib out of plays that fail or play call
that aren't working that it gives Seattle a second a
third of fourth life. Rams take a lead. They're great
on script, they don't have any penalties, they don't make mistakes.
They had the greatest punt ever. And here are the
flailing Seahawks and Sam Donald and picks, and they just

(14:19):
keep coming at you. It is just a flurry and
a fury of athleticism from Seattle. They had over double
the first downs in the second and third quarters. Rams
never had the ball. So I've been saying this all year.
I thought it was going to be a go either
way game, and I thought it was twenty eight twenty seven.

(14:40):
But the older, mature, wiser brother, the Rams, beat the crazy, talented,
reckless brother, the Seahawks. But if they played again, I'm
not sure who'd I like. Seattle is a young team,
and young teams can often struggle to find an identity.
The Seahawks don't. Donald strangely fits them. Per Stafford quarterbacking,

(15:02):
the Seahawks would feel odd. Stafford's got McVeigh and a
veteran tight end, some offensive linemen that have been around,
and I kind of feel like, you know, Devonte Adams
old wise, smart, clean, efficient. Stafford feels like the Rams

(15:22):
and exactly what they need. Yet Darnold, even with four picks,
feels like he's a perfect fit for the young, youthful,
little more mistake prone Seahawks. By the way, in the
seahawks three losses, they've had multiple giveaways and they're still
all one possession losses. So I mean, you get into
the octagon with the Seahawks and they're just bringing massive

(15:43):
athleticism and they're gonna make mistakes and they're gonna come
at you one hundred miles an hour. And I mean
I get if Stafford threw four picks and like, oh
that Rams would lose ugly. Seattle throws four on the road,
gets the ball kicked down to the one inch line
and almost wins it. It's just they're just Seattle is

(16:05):
just so much athleticism and it's a wildly dynamic team
to watch. I the last team I'd want to play
in the playoffs, honest gott would be Seattle. They're just coming.
You better be prepared for a fight. And Ernest Jones
after the game, linebacker formerly of the Rams now the Seahawks, says,

(16:25):
don't be banging on Sam Darnold.

Speaker 4 (16:28):
I mean Sam's been balling.

Speaker 9 (16:29):
Like if we want to try to define Sam by
this game and what man, Sam's been had us in
every game. So for him to sit there and say, oh,
that's my fault, No, it's not. It was plays that defensively,
we could have made plays. There were opportunities where we
could have got better stops. Yeah, I mean, like it's
football man, and he's our quarterback. We got his back end.

(16:51):
You got anything to say, quite frankly.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
Yeah, that that is Seattle. And again Rams are more Mayweather.
They're a tactician, They're calculated, they're clean, they're efficient, hard
to land a punch. Seahawks are swinging from the heels.
They're hitting the ball off the tee about three point
fifty into the woods. Thankfully they have a good rescue club.

(17:16):
But it's there, really are For all the similarities, there
were so many good athletes on the field. And a
couple of times the Donald interceptions, I was texting a
buddy like he didn't he saw things late. I mean,
the Rams do such a good job. Rams have Donald's number.
Rams are now three and oh this defensive coordinator's three
and oh against Sam and Sam saw plays late. He

(17:38):
was late on throw. So it's not it's not osmosis,
it's not luck, it's not coincidence. I mean the Rams
earned all those interceptions. Uh, but it is as similar
as they are. They're dissimilar in their in their flow
and function. But that's just one of the craziest games

(17:59):
I've seen this year. J McK the news.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
This is the herd line news.

Speaker 3 (18:06):
From one middleign quarterback in the NFC West to an
elite one Brock party Colin, He's back, baby. The turf
toe was not an issue for Brock.

Speaker 4 (18:15):
Perty.

Speaker 3 (18:15):
He carved up Arizona. I believe they scored on eight
of eleven possessions. Perty was mex and even.

Speaker 1 (18:21):
The opening kickoff they took back ninety some yards. Guy More.
I mean the Niners came out with a massive chip
on their shoulder. They they played about as well as
anybody in the league yesterday. Despite I was texting Robert
Solo over the weekend and I was congratulating. I'm like,
I don't know how you're doing it. You have no
players left, and he just loves this team. But if
you watch that game, I mean from the opening kickoff

(18:44):
on San Francisco was in a bad mood.

Speaker 3 (18:48):
Yeah, I would say for sure, brock Perty made the
offense look crisper than Matt Jones. And I know Mac
Jones was good, he was fine. He kid pocket, yeah, yeah,
that's the other thing. His speed, he had kid Old McCaffrey,
Ricky Piersall, there was a sighting. He had one catch
Brandon Ayuk on deck. I'm just telling you keep an
eye for the Niners as a sleeper. The defense isn't there,

(19:09):
as you said, but they could be there just because
the offense.

Speaker 10 (19:12):
Well.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
The other thing is, I don't know what the numbers are.
Our guys will look it up. But there is something
with Kittle and brock Purty. No, yeah, there is, just
you could tell bra First of all, Brock moves the pocket,
so there's no doubt about that. They averaged four more
points a game with Brock than they do Mac. But
there is something with Brock Purty and George Kittle that
feels very authentic. And you know a lot of these

(19:34):
young quarterbacks they love their tight ends. Well, they hang out.

Speaker 3 (19:36):
Remember they would go to Warriors games and State court side.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
Here's another guy who hung with him.

Speaker 3 (19:40):
Christian McCaffrey talking about brock Perty's excellent game.

Speaker 11 (19:44):
He was vintage Brock. Yeah, and that's the that's a
huge compliment. You know, he was poised, made some great plays,
made some huge third down throws, kept us in the game,
was smart the whole game. Like you know, to miss
games like that is really hard, and to come back
in the middle of the year, and you know, I
think people kind of just watch and like, oh, you know,

(20:06):
he had a good game whatever. But to be out
that long and to come in and do what he
did today is extremely impressive.

Speaker 1 (20:11):
Yeah. No, I thought it was. And I know you
love him, but I just thought from the sky Moore
return on, Brock was in his own and he went
right to his guy Kittle. I think I said this
earlier the coaching job by Salah and Shanahan. Look at
all the teams in the league, Jason that have fallen
apart physically, they fall apart. Now the Niners are inconsistent

(20:32):
because again they just don't have enough players. But boy,
when they turn it on again, this is another team
you would not want to face in the playoffs if
they were reasonably healthy. They are really exceptionally well coached.

Speaker 3 (20:45):
Two other reasons to like them, Colin. They had their
first twenty yard carry of the season week eleven. They
were the last team to get there. I wonder if
the return of Purdy just gave the defense different looks.
Arizona could not stop them all day. And Colin, you
look at the schedule down the stretch. Oh I did
Carolina and Cleveland up next to Cleve Cleveland game is
gonna be tough at Cleveland.

Speaker 1 (21:06):
Then look at that the late bye.

Speaker 3 (21:08):
Yep, that is fascinating because it gives them a chance
to recalibrate the health of a Nayuka. Pearsall incorporate new concepts.
I think San Francisco's a bye team going forward. I
think they're a lot to make the wildcard obviously now
gonna win.

Speaker 1 (21:22):
I thought that last game of the year was Seattle.
Oh my god, how good it. That'll be a Fox
game Seattle in San Francisco, in Santa Clara. That could
be for seeding, that could be for the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (21:33):
Should be a really, really good one.

Speaker 3 (21:35):
Next story, not as good of a Los Sorry California team.

Speaker 1 (21:39):
And that's the Chargers, Colin.

Speaker 3 (21:40):
Heading into their bye week, they went to Jacksonville and
looked disinterested. It looked like they didn't want to play.
The worst loss of the Jim Harbough era. They lose
thirty five to six to Jacksonville. I mean Jacksonville had
thirty first downs. I mean, this was staggering. I did
not anticipate this. It was just a no show from
the Chargers. Well, it's very uncharacteristic form. All Jacksonville games

(22:03):
are weird. I mean, Jacksonville be Kansas City.

Speaker 10 (22:06):
You know.

Speaker 1 (22:06):
I just wonder how long can you band aid the offense?
And that's how I look at him. They're just putting
band aids in bondo all over this offense. And I
think at some point, I mean, we know Jacksonville, they've
been drafting near the top of the draft for years.
They've got talent. They have two good running backs, they
have two good defensive linemen. It's not that Jacksonville doesn't

(22:27):
have talent. They kind of lack structure and momentum and culture.
But when you watch that game yesterday, you're like, yeah,
Jacks have a ton of really high end players. You
can see it. It's not a mirage. They When you
draft top ten a lot, you get a lot of
really good players. And they have them.

Speaker 3 (22:41):
Yeah, even more worse news for the Chargers. They got
the Eagles on deck. Well, they got the Raiders than
the Eagles. Chiefs Dallas Houston's defense, Denver's defense, Colin, that
offensive line can't protect Herbert Camp. They're probably not going
to make the playoffs. And I'm not I don't think
people should overreact just because you lose both your tackles,

(23:04):
you got no chance or a big breaking news year
on another.

Speaker 1 (23:07):
Injury in the NFL.

Speaker 2 (23:07):
Tackle.

Speaker 1 (23:08):
These guys are invaluable. If you can't protect your quarterback.
Look at look at the Eagles when Lane Johnson Sane
Johnson had that's the one he's going probably gonna go.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
In the eye.

Speaker 1 (23:16):
R Nowyland Hurts is five and nine without Lane Johnson
a right tackle, not a left or right. So it
said that you lose both elite tackles.

Speaker 4 (23:25):
Got no shot.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
Yeah, here here's harball and the loss.

Speaker 12 (23:29):
We got beat every which way you could possibly be beat.
We just won't do anything well offensively, warren't who were
running the ball? Well, we weren't protecting uh, we weren't
getting open and defensively you know saying we uh, you know,
weren't uh, we're stopping the run, we're loosing coverage. Uh yeah,

(23:51):
I mean go through every phase and we uh yeah,
we got beat every which way you could get beat.
We were out physicals as well, any reasons, every every
I mean every phase. I mean we can go through it.
Now we're gonna figure out what we're what we're gonna
do about it.

Speaker 1 (24:08):
Yeah. I think their teams sometimes can try to fool themselves.
I think they knew very early in this game they
were in big trouble and it just went sideways fast.

Speaker 3 (24:18):
And they're getting Hampton back apparently after the bye week
final story, Colin, should dore standers, Everybody take a deep breath? Okay,
Dylan Gabriel leads with a concussion. Should your standers comes in?
The stat line wasn't great for sixteen forty seven yards
a pretty brutal interception, although the offensive line did him
no favors.

Speaker 1 (24:38):
I don't want to pile on the kid. Okay, here's
the problem.

Speaker 2 (24:41):
He takes to the.

Speaker 3 (24:42):
Podium after the game, Colin, and take a listen and
let me know what you think of this.

Speaker 13 (24:47):
There's a rough day overall, But the thing that I
was excited about is just being able to get out there.

Speaker 4 (24:55):
You know, I feel.

Speaker 13 (24:56):
Fulfilled overall when it comes to being out there, practicing,
going in between the line scene actually what it's like,
and I know I'm made for it. You know, I
don't think there's a dot in my mind. The final
drive was gonna go down there.

Speaker 10 (25:14):
Score.

Speaker 13 (25:15):
Things happened, we didn't, but I was just excited because
I knew. I knew what I was gonna be able
to do out there.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
Yeah, it's fine. I mean, I listen, there's gonna be
people that defend him and go, why isn't he taking
first team reps? Well, Josh Dobbs went to the Vikings
without a practice and threw for three hundred and fifty yards.
Baker Mayfield came to the Rams and had one practice
I think one, and had a game winning drive. This idea,
he's been with a team for six months, like he's
ready to play. You don't need first team reps. I

(25:46):
got all sorts of guys in the NFL. Joe Flacco
shows up in Cincinnati. An hour later, He's throwing touchdown passes.
He's fine. He had a couple of spin moves that
I liked. He had a good throw deep there's not
much to be made from it. I listen. I will
say this, Dylan Gabriel had stabilized the offense the last
couple of weeks, and this coaching staff prefers Dylan Gabriel

(26:08):
based on who they're playing, and I think Shador looked
looser than Dylan Gabriel. Dylan Gabriel is what he is,
knows what he is. I thought Shadeur, you know, gets
a little negative running backwards, maybe thinks he's a little
more athletic than he is. He was fine, But I
don't I don't buy into the I don't buy into
the excuses. Well, what about the first team reps Josh

(26:30):
Dobbs one a game with no practices joining Minnesota. This
kid's at one hundred practices with the team. He knows
the offense.

Speaker 3 (26:39):
If you look at some different angles on the interception,
the Ravens had a guy blitzed right up the middle untouched,
and Shadeorge just kind.

Speaker 1 (26:45):
Of he had no chance on the pick. So I'm
not going to bury him. I'll say this though. They
faced the Raiders this week in Vegas.

Speaker 3 (26:52):
Now, obviously they Raiders have Crosby, who's very good. But
the Raiders are having a short week, right they played tonight.
There's a world where it's starts. He has some success.
I'm not going to rule out that Shador has a
good first start.

Speaker 1 (27:06):
If he faced the Raiders this week. They're not good.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
We know that.

Speaker 1 (27:08):
Yeah, I mean I don't have He had a really
nice spin move and then the next play through a
cornerball to the enzone. That was beautiful. So he had
back to back plays. I was like, oh, that's not
He also had a completion. Now Jerry Judy did most
of the work, but again it was it was fine.
He looked a little overwhelmed. The knock on him, one
of the knocks out of college was he tends to
run backwards. He did that once where he ran backwards.

(27:31):
So it was fine. It's not the end of the world.
He had a bad pick. Darnold had four. It happens.
But I don't buy this. Well, where are all the
reps with the first team guys? Backups are backups for
a reason. I mean, I just you don't get a
lot of reps for the first team. In life, you're
gonna get opportunities because somebody's sick at work. You're not

(27:52):
going to get a lot of reps with the first
team employees. That's the way the world works. Jay mclanews, Well,
that's the news, and thanks for stuf the herd line.
It's interesting. J mack talked about that George Kittle and
Perty hang out together, and you can watch yesterday you
can tell they just they got something works. Rock Perty

(28:12):
has a one forty one passer rating in his career
when targeting George Kittle, so it's very obvious that's the
one thing Perty moves better than Mac Jones, and he
and Kittle there's a symmetry and it just jumps through
the TV. So, okay, all Eagle games should come with
a red bull, so it keeps all of us awake.

(28:33):
They're kind of really good and really boring. And now
it'll get worse because Lane Johnson is out for several weeks.
It's not season ending, but he'll be out a month
plus and Jalen Hurts his passer rating gets into the
seventies without Lane Johnson. So I thought the Spurs Tim

(28:53):
Duncan dynasty was boring. Philadelphia wins all feel like they're
doing it by submission, so they're second most three and
outs top three and punts, and yet they just kind
of squeeze you. They got a little bit like a python.
They just kind of squeeze you to death. And last year,
at least you were getting those Saquon Barkley big explosive runs.

(29:14):
You don't get those their bottom five and passing offense. Man,
were they targeting aj Brown last night? So it's not
much fun. It's got an assembly line feel to it.
In fact, Jalen Hurts is four and oh this year
in his four worst games. So they're unlike Buffalo, which

(29:36):
feels very beholden to how Josh Allen plays. Philadelphia can
win ugly. That's kind of the only way. They win
by submission. And there's the old saying Bill Belichick Usta
was say his genius as a defensive coach was, I
want to make the other team play left handed. I'm
going to take away their strength. What is Philadelphia's strength?

Speaker 10 (30:00):
And A J.

Speaker 1 (30:00):
Brown got the targets, but Davante has been more reliable.
Saquon Barkley's great, but not this year. Jalen doesn't throw
a lot of picks. He also doesn't throw for a
lot of yards. I mean their defensive interior line could
be their identity. They're great, so Saquon Barkley's regress. There's
wide receiver drama, the quarterbacks limited, they squeeze into submission.

(30:27):
They're they're not even tush pushing much. Here's Nick Sirianni
on the win.

Speaker 10 (30:32):
As I watched football today, I feel like there I
saw a lot of like teams waiting to lose. Our
team's waiting to win because they know how to win.
There's something to be said for that, you know, of
of of knowing how to win and knowing how to
figure out ways to win. Do we want things to
be better? Yeah, of course that's here in a constant

(30:54):
quest of getting better.

Speaker 1 (30:57):
Well, speaking of winning, the Rams did again. Stafford plays
another clean game. Sean McVay. Next it's the Hurt.

Speaker 2 (31:06):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon Eastern non a Empacific.

Speaker 1 (31:13):
Well, I said Friday, I thought it was the game
of the year. Two great coaches, really good rosters, all
sorts of pass, rush and youth. The Rams in one
of the wildest games. I want to give you a
glimpse of Sean McVay in the post game. It was
not an artistic masterpiece. But it was wildly entertaining. Here's

(31:33):
Sean after how about that?

Speaker 14 (31:40):
Never take for granted fighting away, just being able to
be so resilient offensively, what a blessing offensively for us
to be able to learn from this and continue to grow.
But man, this group fighting different ways to be able
to win. Can't say enough about it? Can't Kitchens get one?

Speaker 1 (32:01):
He joins us Live Sean McVay, I gotta tell you
one of the things that jumped through the TV screen
was the energy Mike and I said this last week.
I said this. John Snyder wanted to hire you. He
was looking for Sean McVay, and he kind of found
you on defense. I do think your intensity, Actually, it's

(32:22):
like a baton to your team. Your team plays with
your energy. I think Seattle plays with Mike's energy. What
jumped through the TV to me is the game had mistakes,
but you're on the sideline of that game. It didn't
feel like a lot of games I've seen this year.
It felt juiced, it felt energized in it. To you, Yeah, well,
I'll tell you what. I love this group. They energized me.

Speaker 15 (32:44):
Colin, and I tell you just the way that these
guys stay connected.

Speaker 4 (32:48):
It was a unique game.

Speaker 15 (32:49):
There wasn't a lot of possessions and plays that the
offense had, but our defense kept making him snap it
one more time, forcing turnovers, tightening up in the red area,
being good in crunch time, Sitsu, guys, stepping up, Ethan Evans.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
You know.

Speaker 4 (33:03):
So we're finding different ways to win.

Speaker 15 (33:05):
We've had examples where we put it all together, and
then we've had examples where we have to be able
to play off on one another and ultimately come away
with more points than the other team.

Speaker 4 (33:13):
And that's a great football team. But I was fired
up for our group.

Speaker 15 (33:17):
And I just love the resolve of this team and
the way that they stay connected most importantly, and I
was fired up.

Speaker 4 (33:23):
My mom's gonna be yelling at me for the curse words.
I gotta be careful having a two year old around.
He repeats everything I say, so I got to clean
up the language.

Speaker 1 (33:30):
Yeah, those two year olds are like their parents. They
said everything you say, you're gonna hear it back later
the node when you you guys have had success with
Darnold and Sam sometimes can play a little fast, a
little frenetic, and Coach Schule has done that on your staff.
I thought a couple of times. My interpretation was Sam

(33:51):
saw stuff late. He was just a beat late. Is
that scheme coverage pass rush? Why the success again, Sam?
Because Sam had played mostly clean this year, but here
was late on stuff. What do you caught it that for?

Speaker 15 (34:06):
Yeah, well, I think Sam has done a great job
and I totally agree how well he's played. I think
it's the epitome of Russian coverage playing together.

Speaker 4 (34:13):
And that's why I always think.

Speaker 15 (34:15):
Stats are for losers because we had zero sacks, but
those four interceptions were such a great combination of he
gets sped up with Russian coverage, you feel that pocket collapse,
he has to deliver the ball earlier than he wants.
I mean, you look at Punafourd coming free that forces
Darius Williams pick. We had a bunch of examples on
all four where it was a combination of he's sped up,

(34:36):
or he's having to accelerate his process of reading with
his feet, and then guys are in windows that maybe
they shouldn't be because he's not able to see it
and play on the time in rhythm that he wants.
But it was a great job by our group. As
a whole bringing it to life. And I think you
see on all four of those interceptions, the consistent theme
is there's a push in the pocket, there's somebody flashing

(34:56):
across his face, and there's guys connected and in their
spots the back end.

Speaker 1 (35:01):
Yeah, when you were in the second and third quarters,
you guys barely had the ball. When you would talk
to Stafford, was your sense, listen, let's just play clean.
Let's not give many short fields here. They're athletic enough.
Or were you getting frustrated because I mean there was
a but an hour and a half period where you
didn't have the ball much. Is that that cycle, that

(35:22):
that period? What do you what are you doing as
a coach. Are you like you're making defensive plays, I'm
comfortable with it, Or are you on the headset with
Matt and saying let's try this, this, this. Are you
staying on the game plan?

Speaker 15 (35:34):
Yeah, I'm with the defense during those things and then
we have dialogue. It was it was frustrating just when
you look at it from an offense advantage point, because.

Speaker 4 (35:42):
You know, you have the first four drives of the
game where you go right down.

Speaker 15 (35:46):
You end up you know, missing on a fourth and one,
then we end up scoring, you score again, and then
our fourth drive represents.

Speaker 4 (35:53):
A three and out where we didn't do what we
were supposed to do.

Speaker 15 (35:56):
Then the then the next time we touched, that's with
eight minutes left in the second quarter. Then you come
back midway through the third quarter and you have a
two play sequence where we turn it over. So you've
had five plays and what's probably real time an hour
and a half.

Speaker 4 (36:08):
Like you mentioned, it is frustrating and it.

Speaker 15 (36:11):
Can get a little misleading when you go back and
you watch it. You know, the margin fair slim against
a great team like that. But our guy stayed in
the fight, and I thought Matthew did a phenomenal job
of being able to play the game the way it
needed to be played.

Speaker 4 (36:23):
We didn't.

Speaker 15 (36:24):
We weren't able to sustain drives, and just you know,
the possession was how it was. He didn't have as
many opportunities, but he took care of the football, got
the ball where it was supposed to go.

Speaker 4 (36:33):
They didn't take negatives.

Speaker 15 (36:34):
We did some things pre snaff that's uncharacteristic, but we'll
look forward to being able to clean this up.

Speaker 4 (36:39):
And like I said in that locker room.

Speaker 15 (36:41):
It's a blessing for us to be able to learn
from it against an excellent outfit like yesterday was.

Speaker 1 (36:45):
Last seven games, twenty two touchdowns, no picks for Stafford.
Could I that's crazy? Could I argue? Could I argue
facing your defense in practice, with its mobility and flexibility
and dexterity, that that actually benefits Matt because he's not
phasing a defense on the field that's as good as practice.

(37:07):
Does that help in your opinion?

Speaker 2 (37:09):
Yeah?

Speaker 15 (37:09):
I think I think it helps him, you know when
we do do the few plays a week. But I
think he's just playing really well. I think the guys
around him are playing well. I think he's really understanding
how to be able to play like this is where
you see the seventeen years of experience and understanding. You know,
where are those spots that I can be more aggressive?
Where can I be smart with the football? I think
guys have played well around him, and you know the

(37:30):
best part is is he's so grateful to be able
to get the win, and I thought he did really
what he could.

Speaker 4 (37:36):
Relative to how the game unfolded.

Speaker 15 (37:38):
There was a couple bad plays that I had on
some g on some second down and tense situations that
I didn't help us. But he's just doing a great
job of understanding the totality of how the game's supposed
to be played, you know, through the quarterback, but from
a coach's vantage point. And it's still is aggressive, but
it's not reckless.

Speaker 1 (37:55):
I want to ask you before we go. You're very progressive.
You very much follow the analyst. But there are moments
in games where I do I always call it ma analytics,
where I just I just want to see men make plays.
I'm not going by the book. I trust my team.
How I want you viewed as one of the smarter
guys in this sport with analytics? Are there ever times

(38:17):
that you literally get on the headside or you talk
to Matt and you're like, yeah, I'm just going to
do this. I just feel this. How do you weigh
analytics one hundred percent?

Speaker 15 (38:27):
Well, here's the thing that I would say, I have
tremendous respect for taking all these things in for the input,
but in a lot of instances they got all the
answers and no accountability to the outcomes, you know, And
so I do think there's a feel for the flow
of the game.

Speaker 4 (38:40):
There's twenty two moving parts that are unpredictable.

Speaker 15 (38:43):
And it's not just these decisions aren't made in a box,
but you're betting on people, You're betting on different scenarios, situations.

Speaker 4 (38:50):
What are the matchups based on what.

Speaker 15 (38:52):
You're projecting stematically, you know, and so all those things
way into it. But I thought our fourth down conversions
offensively were key and critical that led to scoring drives.
Whether it's our first touchdown from two yards out from Kiren,
whether it ended up being a fourth and one run
where he goes for thirty four and then we end
up hitting Devonte two plays later.

Speaker 4 (39:10):
So guys have done a good job. But it's a
part of it.

Speaker 15 (39:12):
It's not the only part of it, uh, Because I
just think this game has so many moving parts, with
twenty two variables every single snap.

Speaker 1 (39:20):
Who's your leader on defense? It's young, who's your leader?

Speaker 4 (39:23):
Well, we've got great leaders across the board.

Speaker 15 (39:25):
I think what's cool is we've got captains on all
three levels, where Kobe Turner, Nate Landman, and then Quinton Lake,
you know.

Speaker 4 (39:33):
They've done a great job.

Speaker 15 (39:34):
I think in you know, innately, some of these guys
that are thrust into a leadership role with the communication.
Landman is such a great communicator. Quinton Lake's been outstanding.
But those three captains, but I could name some other
guys that stepped up in a big way. I think
the cool thing is we got a bunch of guys
that have leadership capacity. Those were the guys that were
voted all with captains, but there's a lot of guys.

Speaker 4 (39:54):
You know, you don't have to be a captain to
be a leader.

Speaker 15 (39:56):
And I think you know, our team's got a lot
of guys with those natural traits and character.

Speaker 1 (40:00):
All right, eight and two, you're humming. You are humman.
I would say, get some good rest, but that's not you.
It's the football season. Four hours of four hours a
day max. Probably it's great seeing.

Speaker 4 (40:12):
You, Hey, goodness see you two.

Speaker 1 (40:13):
Appreciate it, all right. Sean McVay on a wild, crazy
Not a lot of games look like that. Justin had
a ton of juice and a ton of energy and
great young players everywhere. Two teams that have drafted extraordinarily
well Sean McVay, Colin Wright, Colin Wrong top of next hour.
The it's just such a wild game. You know, we

(40:36):
Jamck and I were talking about this. I thought the
Niners yesterday played really well offensively. Brock brings in a
dimension they don't have with Mac. But I think what's
happening in the NFL right now is if you have
a star quarterback like Stafford's a pretty big cap hit.
How do the Rams have such a great roster when
Stafford's a big cap hit They've drafted Well, it all

(40:58):
comes back to the draft. You watch c Man, they
have not missed on a lot of draft picks of Philadelphia.
Go look at that defensive line, those early draft picks.
They have hit on a lot of those. And we
can talk about free agency and stars and quarterbacks. The
way to win in this league when you have a star,
veteran quarterback. The Rams are an example. You got to

(41:18):
hit on Pooka Nakou in the fifth round. You've got
to go look at the Rams secondary. I mean they
got a safety in the third round. They have a
safety that plays that's undrafted. You just have to hit
in April on picks. Otherwise all it takes is a
couple of miss draft picks. You're paying a quarterback. You
look up and you just you just don't look fast,

(41:39):
you don't look twitchy. So Colin Wright Colin Wrang and
next hour we'll get to the Buffalo Bills. Josh Allen's incredible,
and it's it's you're watching that game yesterday, and I
know it's historic, but my take is with Josh Allen,
he almost normalizes three touchdowns, running three passing. Oh no,

(42:01):
not quite, but he almost normalizes it. That's how gift
of he is.

Speaker 3 (42:04):
After that loss to Miami, Collin, it feels like they're saying, Josh,
take over, don't let us lose. You run the show,
do whatever you have to do.

Speaker 1 (42:12):
Hour two, we're in Chicago's the Hurt

Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks.
