Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Here we go. It is a Tuesday, A lot on
the agenda, Herd higher our key today. There's a lot
of teams smorshed right in the middle of the NFL.
What do we do with the Kansas City Chiefs? So
they had top ten team? What do we do with Seattle?
It's the Herd in Chicago, wherever you may be, however
(00:46):
you may be listening. Thanks for making us part of
your day. So okay, okay, you can say it was
just the Raiders. I understand that, but it should be
noted the Quinn Williams down. They got that linebacker back
that that second round pick is healthy. So Quinn Williams
(01:09):
last night season high in sacks, one and a half,
career high end quarterback hits. Another Escape from New York
success story. Two things are absolutely true. Every player that
leaves the toxic New York Jets gets better instantly, and
Dallas is probably not as far off as everybody thinks.
Dallas has a top ten to twelve quarterback, run games,
(01:32):
good interior d line, Kenny Clark, quinnin Williams, the weapons
on the perimeter they stole George Pickens. That's a lot
of playoff boxes. Now, the offensive line is young, they're
inconsistent on pass protection, but the Cowboys are after the
Packers and Seahawks, the youngest offense in the league, so
they are an ascending offense. And remember I've been on this.
(01:55):
They don't need a quarterback. Seven teams in the league
are desperate for it. So those two first round picks.
Quarterback is going to be overdrafted like it is every year,
and this year Dallas is going to be able to
manipulate that first round, those two picks. So Quinn Williams,
now you want he was an All Pro with Robert Sala.
(02:16):
That's what you saw last night. That was the Quinn Williams.
That was an all Pro. Expect that going forward. By
the way, Kenny Clark interior alignment, so not all, not
all struggling teams are equal. Dallas is young, they're ascending.
They got a top ten to twelve quarterback. The Jets don't,
the Browns don't, the Raiders don't, the Saints don't, the
(02:38):
Titans don't. Dallas has the same number of wins as
the Miami Dolphins, and I would take Dallas ten out
of ten times because a DAK. I would take Dallas
ten out of ten times over Miami. So we can
all clown on Jerry Jones, and I, you know, is
he the GM. Whatever he is, He's certainly not the
worst GM in the league. But I would say this,
the offense is elite. They stole George Pickens, they don't
(03:01):
need weapons, running game feel solid. The O line has
to get better in pass pro. But they're all young.
The offense is young, and the two defensive issues they
have they can solve in the draft because they have
two first round picks. So I think Dalla's going to
win six or seven games and they're gonna get an
elite pass rusher in the draft. But last night, we
(03:21):
got to be fair about this. Donovan Azaraku, their second
round pick, played last night. Oh yeah, he's good. He's
a good player. And they got back Demarvian over shown
the linebacker they got him back. Well, he's an athlete.
So you started seeing some of those young guys behind
Quinn Williams and I know it's the Raiders. I get it,
(03:45):
I understand it. But again, turn the sound down. Watch
their athleticism last night. Quinn Williams a career high in
quarterback hits and one and a half sacks, a season high.
Escape from New York. So we can all say we
want to do but and I said this, when they
got Quentin Williams, they did not give up a first
(04:05):
round pick next year. That was very smart by Dallas
because six to seven teams are desperate for a quarterback,
and there's a bunch of quarterbacks that are probably mid second,
high second, late first round picks. They're all going to
be overdrafted. They're all going to be overdrafted. Mendoza is
going to go one or two. Everybody else probably gets overdrafted.
(04:29):
You need a quarterback, and the following year doesn't appear
to be as good at quarterback as this year. There's
not seven or eight guys that could go in the
first couple of rounds. So last night they were finally healthy.
On defense, Jerry Jones said after they went over the Raiders,
he could hardly contain himself.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
You could say the mpag of the actually the players,
not just the non just you guys there in the
front with Quentin and those guys well or had other
players out there, and that we'll head and have them.
So I really was pleased with the way the defense,
and that's was restraining myself from failing.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Jumping up and down here.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
Again, not all bad teams are equal. The Raiders don't
have anything right, from the culture to the run game,
head coach. There's a lot of stuff. Dallas has the
offense right, A sending, young, old line that run blocks
pretty well, excellent weapons, stole George Pickens, Ceede lambsa one
Javonte Williams looks like the Bronco kid. I mean that offense.
(05:38):
I think it's number two in the NFL. Right now.
That's fine, Okay, look at all the bad teams. I'd
feel a lot better today about Dallas with those two
first round picks. Maybe go get Caleb Downs, Ohio State,
go get a need rusher problem solved, young athletic. All right,
So you get to the point of this. I always
(06:00):
this is funny in the NFL season, fans Loowis do this.
I'll say, well, I like this team, and they're like, well,
I haven't beaten anybody. Well, who's great? I mean Philadelphia
has won like twenty two of their last what twenty
five games, and they look ugly every week. I mean, Denver,
none of you like Denver. We are they nine and two?
At some point do you win games or not? So
(06:24):
the big question with the Bears is the Bears are
seven and three and in first place, and everybody's saying, oh, yeah,
but this schedule woo o oh. I mean it's Joe
Montana and the Niners coming up next. I actually think
they're going to remain in first place. And here's why.
What the next five games the Bears play all have
(06:45):
in common? Steelers, Eagles, Green Bay, Cleveland, Green Bay? What
are they all have in common? Every one of those teams,
not the Bears. Every one of those teams is struggling
to find their offensive identity. Chicago I didn't have that problem.
Chicago's inconsistent. But Chicago runs the ball a lot and
(07:06):
runs the ball well, and for the record, still leaves
the NFL in big plays. Yeah, the Bears may be inconsistent,
a little start stop, right, but they have an identity.
They are gonna run the ball a lot, and they're
gonna run it well, So that's an identity. The Bears,
you know, it's a little like a Quentin Tarantino movie.
(07:28):
Strong plot, excellent character development, seems a little out of order.
We're gonna have to wait to the end of the movie.
So it all sort of wraps in together and you'll
be like, well, that was really good. But there are
times the operational part, the penalties three and out, Caleb
misses an easy one, you're like, hey, again, it's a
(07:52):
little out of order. They have bad quarters, weird halves,
they're good late. So, and I say this all the time,
you do not have to be perfect to get to
a super Bowl. You just have to have an identity.
The Philadelphia Eagles got to a Super Bowl last year.
They were the fourth worst passing team in a passing league,
(08:12):
but the Eagles knew what they were. That's why this
year Philadelphia is reready struggling because they're not a power
run team. Saquan's not as dominant as last year, so
Philly doesn't quite know what they are. Plus they have
wide receiver drama. Last year they had a little wide
receiver drama, but it was Saquon turn hand off and
watch them run for somewhere between seven and twenty seven yards.
So that's the thing about the Bears. You start looking
(08:35):
at all these games they play. Packers don't know what
they are. They're a passing team. The coach doesn't know it. Philadelphia, No,
Lane Johnson doesn't quite know what they are. Pittsburgh now
using a backup quarterback, Shadure Sanders now starting for Cleveland.
I think Chicago's fine. Again, every game, every scene may
not feel like it kind of fits, but when the
(08:59):
movie's over, when the game's over, you look up and
you're like, yeah, that works. Yeah, that's what they do.
Still people out there, Matt Hasselback not quite sure about
the quarterback though.
Speaker 4 (09:12):
Caleb is a young player learning on the fly, and
as he's learning, they're winning. He's morphing into Ben Johnson's
kind of quarterback.
Speaker 5 (09:20):
Is he there? No?
Speaker 2 (09:21):
I don't think he is.
Speaker 4 (09:22):
He's really not. But they seem to find ways to win.
That's what happens with DNA culture center type coaches. You
set a standard and then an expectation for the details
and the discipline that are going to happen in your
organization every single day. Do I think this is their
year without after I say all that, No, they haven't
really beat anybody, but the schedules getting tougher here, we'll
(09:45):
find out who they really are.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
Well, we know who Caleb Williams is. Today is his
twenty fourth birthday. Happy birthday to Caleb, Happy birthday to
first place. Happy birthday to facing five straight games teams
with no offensive identity. I like Chicago, not even gonna
say I'm a good luck charm. I didn't have anything
(10:08):
to do with it. But they are in first and
it's coming together.
Speaker 5 (10:13):
J Mac.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
You know, it's nice to be in a city. It's
nice to be in a city with winners. That's all
I'm gonna say.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Yeah, Yeah, for sure, definitely. You know, tomorrow's DeAndre Swift's birthday.
Let's make sure we get him a shout out. I'm
just kidding, boy, you love you some bears. Huh Okay,
what's what's a point differential?
Speaker 2 (10:30):
I haven't seen the standings this morning.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
I don't get caught up into those numbers. Yeah, that
kind of data is irrelevance. I see the seven and
the first place. Those are the two numbers I see.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays

it on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen over Promised
with Covino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts

Speaker 1 (11:55):
So there is a heard hierarchy. Top of the hour,
there's a headline today from a story bow Knicks is
a conundrum. Has his potential been capped? And I've heard
this a lot and bow Knicks can drive me crazy,
but I was thinking about this this morning. We put
these in alphabetical order. I don't want to parse it out.
(12:17):
Who's the best, Who's the word? Here's the fifteen best quarterbacks.
I've been watching the NFL since nineteen seventy two. That
was the Miami Washington Super Bowl. I remember watching that
in a black and white TV in my bedroom in
little grayln Washington. Here's the fifteen best quarterbacks I've ever
seen play the position. I'll read it for our radio audience.
Troy Aikman, Josh Allen, Terry, Bradshaw, Tom Brady, Drew Brees,
(12:40):
John Elway, Brett Farve, Dan Fouts, Patrick Mahomes, Peyton Manning,
Dan Marino, Joe Montana, Aaron Rodgers, Big Ben, and Steve Young.
Apologies to Jim Kelly, he was sixteenth. Those are the
best I've ever seen, the best I've ever seen. That
is a high bar. You know what you'd notice for
those quarterbacks. There's no bad coaches? Oh for fifteen, Well,
(13:04):
what about Sean McDermott. He's a good coach. He got
Tyrod Taylor to the playoffs. He had turned Buffalo around.
Josh Allen, he's a good coach. Some of you will
remember the golfer Tom Kite. He's a Hall of Famer.
He has one major. He finished second, third and fourth
a lot. He's a Hall of Fame golfer. Sean mcdermot's
a good coach. Yes, bow Knicks absolutely benefits greatly from
(13:29):
Sean Payton. He is nineteen and nine as a quarterback,
and I bet you he'd be nine and nineteen if
he had like a Matt Eberflus or a Dennis Allen,
you could reverse his record. But in the last seven
games with a legitimate coach. He has five game winning drives,
and don't you think there's something to be said? Isn't
(13:49):
this a wacky coincidence? Here's the three young quarterbacks all
on winning streaks, Drake May, Caleb Williams, and bow Nicks.
Let's see who their coaches are. Oh, Mike Vrabel, Ben
Johnson and Sean Payton all appeared. Two are legitimately big
(14:10):
time all time coaches. I mean, they really are great coaches.
And it looks like Ben Johnson's pretty damn good. What
a wacky coincidence. There are no quarterbacks that are elite
that had a string of bad coaches. Dan Foutz had
Eric Coriel look him up. Dan Marino didn't win Super Bowls.
He had Don Shula winning his coach. Ever, Now I
(14:31):
didn't see Bart Starr plays, so I didn't include him
in that. But he had Vince Lombardi eight minute, Jimmy Johnson.
And I'm not saying the quarterbacks not more valuable than
the coach. There's no bad coaches in there. In fact,
it's many. I mean Tony Dungee with a defensive guy,
Tony dungee' is a really good coach. One in Tampa
one an Indy. But the number that you have to
(14:52):
respect bo Nixon and he has bad halfs. He got
bad games about three games ago. Sean Payton was watching
them on the sideline and you could read the body language.
Sean didn't know what to do. Here's where you got
to respect him. Since he entered the league. This number
will shock you. Bow Nicks has more pass attempts than
(15:15):
any quarterback in the league. What is the ultimate sign
of respect What a parent does to a child, trusts
them with responsibility. That's what the Colts did with Andrew Luck.
Bruce arians gave him the whole damn playbook as a rookie.
Figure it out. It's what Conflin did with Eli Manning.
You're a smart kid, You're a Manning. Here's the playbook.
(15:38):
Make some mistakes Eli did, Andrew Luck made a lot
of them, and bow Nicks does. The ultimate sign of
respect is that Sean Payton's like bro no handholding. Big
Ben's an all timer. Go look at the first couple
of years with Big Ben. They were holding his hand,
they were babysitting in you know, they weren't throwing the
ball much. Bow Nicks leads the whole freaking league in
(15:59):
passive himps. So he can drive me crazy. He has
bad halfs, but the whole thing well off if not
for Sean Payton will if not for Jimmy Johnson. I mean,
troyten was first year when Jimmy was one in fifteen.
This is hard. Football practice is hard. Forget the games,
the practice, the off seasons are hard. Here's bo Nick's
on the criticism outside of the building.
Speaker 8 (16:21):
People are always in town of their opinion. They're always
gonna say what they think, and you know that's also
what makes you know, our country great. But you know,
at the end of the day, you just got to
block it out. You just, you know, can't involve yourself
with what's outside the building. And because if if you do, man,
it'll just bog you down and it'll get you distracted
(16:42):
and you start worrying about things that you shouldn't be
worried about. But everybody's always going to say something for
some reason. We're always going to be you know, talk
down upon, and that's okay.
Speaker 1 (16:55):
He's near the top of the league in a lot
of things, at number one in total pass attempts. That
speaks well of what Sean Payton thinks of him. J
mckle the news. Turn on the news.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
This is the herd Line news, all.
Speaker 5 (17:12):
Right, Colin. From one middling quarterback to a great one.
That's Jalen Hurts. There's some wacky stuff is coming out
in Philly. I don't know what to make of this,
but there's an insider who's claiming that folks within the
Eagles organization have grown frustrated with the quarterback situation. The
insider added that some people in the org would like
(17:35):
to move off Jalen Hurts, but the money is just
makes it impossible. It's almost a Carson Wentz two point
zero situation.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
I mean, this is this is all crazy.
Speaker 5 (17:47):
However, Eagles tackle Jordan my Lotta was asked about this,
and here's his response.
Speaker 9 (17:53):
I don't see it, you know, I know what how
much worse Jaen puts into this, and so no, I
just have to I'm not gonna ask. Yeah, I don't
know how.
Speaker 10 (18:05):
To address that. It's kind of crazy, kind of crazy
that somebody in the organization will do that. I don't know,
he said, he's a he's been there a long time,
rushing wall of the media.
Speaker 9 (18:15):
So but then there's a lot of people.
Speaker 10 (18:19):
And then again, I'm gonna worry about that.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
Well, where there's smoke, there's fire. It didn't come out
of the middle of nowhere. A lot of good reporters
and journalists in Philadelphia.
Speaker 5 (18:27):
Yeah, I mean, I just started to do some digging
on this guy. We don't need to mention in my name.
He's a long time battle axe in Philadelphia, Colin.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Let's just be real.
Speaker 5 (18:37):
Jalen Hurts' last twenty five starts the team's record is
twenty two and three. He was the MVP of the
Super Bowl. He was nearly the MVP of another Super Bowl,
and some people want to run him out of town.
Speaker 1 (18:49):
I don't know. You say battle acts, I say seasoned journalist.
He's not making it up. Somebody in I noways.
Speaker 5 (18:56):
Said he's making anything up. I mean, it's just like
he claims to have sources.
Speaker 2 (19:00):
I don't know.
Speaker 5 (19:00):
He's this isn't at Let's see what a Let's wait
for Schefter, Rapaport and the guys who are plugged in.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
Let's see what they say.
Speaker 5 (19:08):
I just find it very hard to believe that people
are seeing this product and saying we've got to move
off Jalen Hurts.
Speaker 2 (19:14):
He's the problem.
Speaker 1 (19:16):
What I would have a hard time people watching this
offensive product and saying, yeah, we're better when we throw less. Yeah,
that's what the team said last year, Let's throw less.
Nobody says that with Josh Allen. I mean, Mahomes doesn't
doesn't it. Mahomes like top three in the league in
passing attempts. He was at one point. He has no
(19:37):
offensive line. He's getting crushed.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
I mean, you're comparing him to two MVPs. Interesting.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
Josh Allen would love to he would kill, he would
man to get to a super Bowl. Okay, like he
would do whatever it takes. Like they ran less or
they ran more because Saquon Barkley at two thousand yards
last year. I mean, you know this is just staggering,
Like the ineptitude in Philadelphia to think Jalen hurts the problem?
Speaker 2 (20:00):
Colin?
Speaker 5 (20:00):
How many offensive coordinators has he had in Philly?
Speaker 2 (20:03):
Will you need different one every year? What are we doing?
I'm just Flabba gaster.
Speaker 5 (20:10):
All right, Let's move on to a story maybe you
like a little more, and that's Aaron Rodgers. He is
also a little perturbeds Shall we say that reports leaked
out quickly that he's got a wrist injury.
Speaker 2 (20:22):
We still don't know what's going on. That's weird. MRI
should have been we should have the results by now.
Speaker 5 (20:27):
Apparently Rogers will not need surgery, and he is pushing
to play against the Bears. That's not good for my
Bears minus three bit. Chances of him playing right now
are fifty to fifty. But you know it's Tuesday morning.
Long way to go. Mason Rudolph would be the starter here.
How's this one from Adam Schefter? The Steelers tightened the
circle because Rogers did not like the leak.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
Well you could. You could see the strain on his
face when he got hit. I mean, Aaron's constantly on camera,
so I don't think it was. I mean, it's hard
to keep in game, out of game. It's hard to
keep things under wraps. You got twenty reporters minimum in
the locker room, so I don't I don't think there's
a leak on the team. It's there's sometimes it's hard
to keep every bit of information in the White House
(21:14):
under wraps. Just the reality of an NFL locker room.
After a game, you're walking off the field, there's reporters everywhere.
People are asking he's grimacing and the trainer comes over
to him. I don't know. I don't feel I don't
feel like the Steelers have a leak. I just think
Aaron's a high profile guy that's on camera and after games.
That's your number one job as a reporter in Pittsburgh.
(21:35):
To find out how healthy Aaron is after he wins
during the game. That's your job.
Speaker 5 (21:39):
Yeah, we'll find out how much he matters when the line,
when we find out who's starting and what the line does.
Speaker 1 (21:44):
Now it's minus three Bears at home, minus three against Pittsburgh.
Speaker 5 (21:47):
I'm assuming that's no Rogers. Right, You've got a broken
left wrist.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
How are you.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
Taking snaps gripping the ball like? I don't think you
can play with a broker, do you?
Speaker 2 (21:56):
I mean, I know you played a lot of football
back in the day.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Albudy, I think he I think he has a broken
bone in his wrist. I don't think he has a
broken wrist.
Speaker 5 (22:05):
Well, broken bone in a resting deal, you know, broken
bone in the wrist.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Can you play football?
Speaker 4 (22:09):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Yes, you can play for me?
Speaker 5 (22:12):
Hey, I mean he's old, like, you might as well
give it a shot, right, It's not like he's playing
for the future. Final story con let's go to a
Let's go back to a good quarterback, and that's Brock Perdy.
My guy returned from a six game absence two hundred
yards throwing three tutties forty nine ers. Offense was super crisp.
After the game, Perdy spoke to Albert Breer and told
(22:32):
him the offense getting healthy. Colin the Niners are in
the right spot to make a playoff run. Here he is, No,
we don't have to sound sorry. Bottom line is very
excited to have rock perty back. He thinks they can
make a playoff run. How confident are you?
Speaker 1 (22:50):
Well, I think the Rams are better, and I think
Seattle's better, but I think I think it's a really
good division, So I think it's close. You know, they
had a pretty easy schedule to start this, but unfortunately
they fell apart. So I think they'll make a run.
I think their coaching staff's been unbelievable. I think they're
a top ten team. I have him in the hurd hierarchy.
I think their staff's been unbelievable. And I, uh, well,
(23:11):
and we'll see it's around there. They're close. Jmack with the.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
News, Well, that's the news and thanks for stopping that
the herd Line News.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
So a very interesting story. Very rarely does a college
football coach crush at a school and the school says,
make up your mind what you're doing. That's what Old
Miss is doing with Lane Kiffin. I think Lane Kiffin
should go to the pros. I think he's tapped out
at Old Miss. I don't think he's gonna win a
(23:41):
nanny there, but I think he's gonna win a bunch
of games if he stays there. And so Lsu flies
a plane in, flies his family down to Baton Rouge
to check it out. So, Lane Kiffin, they've given him
a deadline at Old Miss, the Mississippi State game the
minute it ends, tell us what you're doing. So I've
always had a theory in life, don't try to get
(24:03):
happier than happy. And I think Lane's happy. When did
Lane Kiffen implode in life? Al Davis NFL dysfunction, The
Raiders were dysfunctional and massive pressure at USC When did
he crush Florida Atlantic? No pressure, Oh Miss, not that
much pressure. And the offensive coordinator under Nick Saban, where
(24:26):
you know Nick's taking the arrows. So Lane, it's a
little like Icarus. Be careful how close you fly to
the sun. Don't try to get happier than happy. I
think the LSU job is crazy town. The governor's talking
about it. They're legally going to try to keep money
from Brian Kelly. Bad luck LSU. By the way, Brian
(24:50):
Kelly won ten games year one, ten games year two,
and entered year three hottest seat in college football. That's
all you need to know. And now the govern of
the States involved in the Brian Kelly mess. So to
me stay at ole Miss or go to the NFL.
But because I think Lane's personality feels like if he
(25:19):
gets into one of these massively pressurized, high expectation situations,
he can be a little snarky. He can be on
social media a little too much. And I'm ad a
source I called yesterday on ole Miss football apparently they've
got a lot of nil money. They've got to they've
(25:39):
got a nil money. It's it's not it's not a
money issue at Old Miss. So and the other thing
is at ole Miss, the entire fan base, the boosters
and the university, they trust the process and they trust Lane.
LSU doesn't trust any coach ince Saban. They don't trust
any of them. They didn't trust Less Mile, that didn't
(26:00):
light Less Miles and Orgeron Brian Kelly. It's a very
cynical football operation where and it's kind of delusional. I mean,
George is a better job. Bama's a better job. I
would say Texas does a better job. And it's LSU's
you know, got a lot of players, but it's up
there with like Oklahoma. It's a it's a really really
(26:21):
good job. But sometimes the donors and the boosters and
the administration and now the governor, I guess it's a
little uncomfortable. I mean this, this is the governor of
the state of Louisiana actually went after the administration of LSU.
Speaker 11 (26:42):
Right now, we got a fifty three million dollar liability.
We are not doing that again.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
And you know what, I believe.
Speaker 11 (26:48):
I believe that we're gonna find a great coach and
maybe we let President Trump pick it.
Speaker 12 (26:51):
He loves winners.
Speaker 11 (26:52):
You know, I'm not gonna be picking the next coach.
But I can promise you we're gonna pick a coach
and we're gonna make sure that that coach is successful,
and we're gonna make sure that he's compensated properly, and
We're gonna put metrics on it because I'm tired of
rewarding failure in this country and then leaving the taxpayers
on the foot, you know.
Speaker 1 (27:13):
To foot the bill. No, Brian Kelly won ten games
and ten games and he was on the hot seat.
He didn't fail. You had expectations in the SEC that
has added Oklahoma in Texas. That's unrealistic. I mean, look
at the coaching in the SEC. Sark and Brett Venables
and Kirby Smart and Lane Kiffen and Kaylin de Boor,
(27:35):
and I got news for you. Nobody's winning twelve games
in that conference much anymore. And now Vandy's good. So
it's not that Brian Kelly failed. Brian Kelly was a
weird fit. Brian Kelly didn't grind in recruiting. He wanted
a failure ten wins, ten wins and or a third
year you're on the hot seat. That's delusion. That's not
(27:55):
bad coaching. So if I was Lane Kiffin, I would
either stay at old US or go pro and reportedly
Ole miss The money's not the issue. So we have
heard hierarchy at the top of the hour plus Nick Ry.
I've never had Nick right on when the Kansas City
Chiefs weren't good. So this will be interesting today because
(28:17):
right now they're five and five. I've been holding on
to this Kansas City Chiefs operation. I still think they
have a lot of smart people. I'm not sure if
they're good. And some of that, for the record is
on Patrick Mahomes. We'll address that next.
Speaker 2 (28:34):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Herd weekdays
and noon Easter non a em Pacific.
Speaker 5 (28:38):
Arizona battles Solo Ball and number three Yukon. Then eleven
thranked Alabama takes on number eight Illinois. It all tips
off tomorrow on F's one.
Speaker 1 (28:50):
So you know, once the NFL weekend is done, everybody's
got their narratives and their big storylines, and one of
them is, you know, Sam Donald. There he goes again.
So when Sam Darnold came out and I took a
lot of crap for this, I said, he's about eighty
percent of Andrew Luck. That's his comp is that Andrew
(29:15):
Luck's more naturally talented, has a better quicker release, But
that's Andrew Luck. That both played in the Pac twelve,
both playmakers, both can be reckless. Do you all remember
how many picks that Andrew Luck threw in six years?
Five double digit years. Andrew Luck averaged an interception per
(29:35):
game in his career. Sam Darnald has averaged one pick
a game in his career. And Andrew Luck never played
for the Jets. He got Bruce Arians in a weak division.
Sam Donald got Belichick. Right, So, if you look at
their numbers for our radio audience, Andrew Luck and Sam
(29:56):
Donald Donald's more accurate ted interception, very close passer rating
slide edge. Luck both had nine games in their career
with three or more interceptions, and both had at least
five seasons with ten plus interceptions. And again, Andrew Luck
(30:17):
got Bruce Arians. That's a pretty good first gig, right,
Sam didn't. In fact, if you take the Jets out
and just count Carolina, Minnesota and Seattle, Sam looks like
an eight quarterback. So, for the record, what was the
worst game Andrew Luck ever had four interceptions against Belichick
(30:41):
in the playoffs? What are the two worst games Sam
Darnold's ever had both against the Rams one and one
last year in Minnesota versus the Rams in the playoffs and
this weekend. So they've got his number, and they've also
got a great young defense. But just never forget this.
Andrew Luck nine career games with three or more picks,
(31:05):
that's Donald. So when't I see it, Well, Sam's got
a ceiling? Did Andrew Luck have a ceiling? I thought
Andrew Luck was gonna win Super Bowls?
Speaker 12 (31:14):
Now.
Speaker 1 (31:14):
I do think Andrew is more talented than Sam, but
I think it's his comp I told executives I talked
before the draft. I loved him. Not everybody loved him.
They said he's too reckless, and I said, well, isn't
Andrew Luck reckless? Andrew Luk's just a bit more talented.
But if you look at the numbers and again, Andrew
Luck didn't have to go to the Jets. You watched
(31:35):
Quinn Williams last night. He's back to being a great player.
He's back to being dominant. Here's the Seahawks coach Mike
McDonald on Donald's mistakes.
Speaker 13 (31:45):
I think the majority of him came laden downs where
we just need to get to the next play. And
Sam's played in time and in rhythm a lot this year,
and he's made a lot of plays for us doing that.
And he's also made a lot of plays off schedule,
So again, you don't want to take the playmaker out
of out of them. And but you also need to understand,
you know, when we when we need, when we need
(32:07):
to be able to get the next play versus you know,
putting the ball in jeopardy down the field.
Speaker 1 (32:12):
Yeah, the Rams, Bill Belichick and the Rams have given
Sam Darnold a lot of trouble. Outside of that, he's
pretty good, Colin, But you love Donald Well. I also
loved Andrew Luck because I like quarterbacks who take risks
like this. This past weekend, Josh Allen has six touchdowns,
a couple of picks. I can live with that. I'm
(32:34):
not somebody. I'm not a passer rating guy. Aaron Rodgers
great passer rating. So what give I want wins and
playoff wins. I don't care about the passer rating thing.
I completion percentage matters. But right now, if you look
at bow Nick's and Caleb Williams and their completion percentage,
they're winning games. They're good in the fourth. I'm not
(32:55):
going to keep track of the second quarter much. You know,
Seattle dominated the second and third quarters. Rams dominated the first,
didn't make any mistakes in the last that's why they
win the game. So the other story is, let's be
totally frank about the Chiefs. And this is a weird
thing to say, but part of Kansas City's problem is
(33:17):
Patrick Malmes. In the last two seasons, he has not
been in Josh Allen's galaxy. Josh has been more accurate,
Josh gets to the end zone more, Josh uses his
legs to a greater degree, and he's just a better
runner right now. Mahomes is not Josh Allen last two years,
and Patrick's become kind of a bad road quarterback this year.
(33:41):
This year he's four and one at home. On the road,
he barely completes sixty percent of his throws. His passer
rating in the low eighties, eighty one. So you could say, well,
he doesn't have the weapons that he needs. Josh Allen does.
He's got better weapons than the twenty twenty two season
(34:03):
in which he was MVP. Go look up their receiving
corps that year. So I do think part of the
Chiefs underachievement this year is on Mahomes. He's been less consistent,
less accurate. Some of it's the right tackle position, but
Bo Knicks is five and oh this year when trailing
in the fourth. Mahomes is zero to five this year
(34:25):
trailing in the fourth. That can't be all just zany coincidence.
Bo Nicks has been the better late game quarterback. So I,
in my opinion, Kansas City needs a reboot. They have
to rip the band aid off with Travis Kelcey. You
can't have your star weapon be good five times a year.
It's time to rip the band aid off. Final year,
(34:47):
he'll be good if they get to the playoffs, and
then one more year a guaranteed salary with Chris Jones.
To me, it's time to rip that band aid off
after next season. So I think Kansas City has to
reinvent itself. And I went and looked this morning some
of the and I've said this for years. When Nick
(35:07):
Saban was crushing in the SEC, the good schools like Tennessee,
Georgia and LSU did not have a good coach. You
go look at when Mahomes and Andy Reid. But Mahomes
was crushing in this division. Denver had Nat Hackett and
Vic Fangio as a head coach. The Chargers had Brandon
(35:28):
Staley and Anthony Lynn, and the Raiders had Josh McDaniels
and Antonio Pierce. Yeah, that whole Jim Harbaugh, Sean Payton.
Thing that feels different, it lands different. So one of
the themes on this show has been if you go
look at Lebron James dominating in the East. Yes, Lebron
(35:48):
was great, the East was terrible. Philadelphia underachieved. The Knicks
weren't any good. I mean, Boston was good briefly, then
you know, disbanded. The roster Lebron dominated. Lebron doesn't dominate
in the West because the West has better coaches, better rosters,
better size, better guards, better gms, better stars. Now Lebron's
(36:09):
out of his prime, but even in his prime, I
don't think he would have dominated the West. He dominates
the East. Nick Saban dominant. So usually to create a dynasty,
everybody else has to underachieve a little bit, or there
has to be dysfunctioned. Go look at Brady when they
move Peyton, Manning and the Colts out of his division.
Early Bills were dysfunctional, Miami Jets were mostly dysfunctional, but
(36:33):
Rex Ryan Actually they've built trouble for a couple of
years with kind of BC level quarterback play. So I
think it's been an up and down season. I don't
think Mahomes has been great the last two years. His
accuracy dips home and away is a different quarterback, and
here's Mahomes on it.
Speaker 12 (36:52):
I think we're really talented. We had a lot of
great players. It's just about being more consistent. And I
think it starts with me as I mean, there's times
where I'm firing in the I'm throwing the ball and
we're moving the ball down the field at ease. But
at the same time, there's times where we go in
spurts where I miss, like throw like I did, or
a protection call or whatever that is. And so it's
about being more consistent. That's what this league is, and
(37:14):
we haven't been consistent enough to win football games. But
it starts to meet with me.
Speaker 1 (37:19):
We have the NFL schedule coming up this week. I'm
actually surprised the Chiefs are a three point favorite against
the Colts. The Colts off a bye, are healthy, Kansas
City is coming off a very physical, intense rivalry game,
the Colts getting a field goal at Kansas City. I
(37:41):
like Indianapolis, and I again off a by Kansas City
struggled to move the ball. Now the Colts defense is
not denvers. I like the over in this game. I
think there's gonna be some points. But some of this
is just Mahomes hasn't been great. You know, I'm not.
I'm not saying he's distracted. I'm not. But you know,
(38:02):
Lamar Jackson doesn't quite have the juice that he had
like a year ago. Jamack talked about that yesterday. Lamar
doesn't quite feel as elusive. And Mahomes is really good,
but he has He's got some real up and downs.
You don't quite feel the lightning and the juice he
had like three years ago. I don't personally doesn't mean
he's not great and won won another Super Bowl or three.
(38:24):
I look at the schedule this weekend. I always look
for a line that surprises me. I think India and
Kansas City is a lot of scoring, There's a lot
of ugly. It's a weird weekend. You could end up
having really good like Tampa Rams could end up being
a great game of Philadelphia at Dallas. I think Dallas
is going to keep it close. Now they're healthy defensively
(38:45):
and no Lane Johnson. It is not a good looking
schedule from when you pull back, but will end up
having five or six like Seattle at Tennessee. One of
those games, Giants at Detroit, Minnesota, Green Bay one of
them is going to be close in the early window.
Speaker 5 (39:00):
Careful with Tampa the last two weeks, their defense is
just hemorrhaging big plays galore. I mean, Patriots had multiple
touchdowns of over thirty yards Bill's last week and the
Rams what do they call him? Big playoffense with McVeigh.
Interesting you mentioned Seattle going to Tennessee. Seattle's a thirteen
point that's.
Speaker 1 (39:20):
A college line, college line?
Speaker 2 (39:22):
Would would you lay it?
Speaker 5 (39:24):
No?
Speaker 1 (39:24):
I already made my picks this morning. I sent him
into the guys. Wait, you're on Tennessee. I didn't. No, no, no,
I'm not. I don't like those there, buddy, No, I don't.
I think green Bay at home bounces back. I think
there's enough film on JJ McCarthy to know what he
can't do and what he can and what he can
is not much. So I think green Bay bounces back,
(39:44):
and I like green Bay as a six and a
half point favorite. But there's to me, there's I don't
want to touch the Baltimore Jets line the Seahawk Tennessee line.
There the numbers are wacky.
Speaker 5 (39:54):
I will just point out next week is Thanksgiving week.
There are three games on things Giving. One of them
is Lions Packers, which could be for the division. I
know your Bears are their temporarily, so I like the
Lions against the Giants, big number, but you gotta be careful.
It's a look ahead spot for the Lions. You know,
next week's game is massive. And also the Chiefs play
(40:15):
the Cowboys on Thanksgiving. Both the Chiefs and Cowboys have
huge games this week, but you know the Thanksgiving game
gets the biggest audience member. People are planning their families.
What are they going to do? They're flying in and out.
There's a lot of logistics. This week is a dangerous
week cold, I will say, be a little bit cautious
just because the holidays approaching.
Speaker 1 (40:33):
Yeah, I mean one of the better lines is San
Francisco only has to give up seven and now against
Carolina and San Francisco offensively, it's finally got the band
back together. Yeah, they got their guys. So I think
I think the Niners on Monday Nights one of the
better plays. I thought the cowboys. You like that last
night
