Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the best of the Jason Smith Show on
Fox Sports Radio. The last twenty four hours has been
owned by well, one thing, not the NBA All Star Game,
not the Jets potentially going to get Kirk Cousins and
giving him million dollar guaranteed. Yeah, have you already photoshop

(00:21):
note Jets uniforms on him? Have you already just started
to put that in your mind? I'm just just speaking,
get into existence that what you're trying to do in
LaVar ball over there. Well, maybe I've also been trying
to think of fun puns with Cousin's name that I
could use. Let's go do a screening of kissing Cousins
and we get Elvis up on the Big Jets will
be kissing Cousins to the tune of but the big

(00:47):
story revolve La lolalves around this. That was the rehearsal

(01:24):
footage of Fergie's national anthem from a day ago at
the All Star Game that has lit the world on fire.
I hear where she tried to bluesy and sex up
the national anthem, which has been met with universal ridiculous.
I'm in Shack, liked it, Shack, and I yeah, I

(01:45):
stand tiping Shack might have a thing and you're married,
so just stop. It doesn't mean I can't still like
her shooting her shot. That would be pretty cool. Something.
You're coming in here with Fergie at night and she's
doing songs for us, just singing blue z additions of
your favorite song. I would have singing contest with her
and I would win. That's what she's like. Freestyle. That's

(02:09):
just freestyle better. I got a feeling than any of
the lyrics of the songs. Well, that lyrics of that
song are dope and yeah, but it's got a good,
great to its beat. No, it's it's got a great beat,
and it looked really good at the super Bowl when
they performed it. There of talent, there's no but Fergi's

(02:29):
rendition of the national anthem is this was this was preventable.
This is this is why I I'm at this point.
This is preventable because clearly this is a bad idea.
You can't sex up the national anthem. It's hard to
anything involving Colonial America is really tough to sex But

(02:51):
here's the opportunity. That's why, that's why she's patriotic. When
you no, no, no, you can sex up many things.
I've said this, you can sex you can't sex up
the nationally. You can sing this song I want to
sex you up. No, but that's not the National anthem.
That's a song about sex. You can sex that up.
You can't sex up the National anthem because there's enough

(03:12):
controversy over it anyway, with people standing sitting, kneeling for
the National Anthem. People are very particular about it. You
try to sex it up, it's not good. You know what,
Nothing is sex shull about Colonial America. Tell me one
picture you've ever seen about anything involving Colonial American you thought,
oh that's sexy. I mean, really, look at look at
everybody wore so many clothes, so it's like, I don't

(03:34):
even know if anybody looks good. But it's all the imagination. No, no, no,
it's it's just like a level I have. I have
these bloomers on, and then I have pants under that,
and then I have underwear, and then I have backup underwear.
You can't even see an ankle now, and look at
the hair dues on everybody, George and Martha Washington. But

(03:56):
I mean, really, you look at ankle. There's nothing sexy
about Colonial America and Fergie tried to sex up the anthem.
But this is even bigger than that, is that every
good entertainer, athlete, politician needs people in their entourage, cabinet,

(04:16):
group agent that can tell them the truth about something.
And this is why playing that practice rendition that was
two hours before the NBA All Star Game, this is
why that's so important. You hear that because somebody had
to get in and say, you know what, I don't
know that that's a good idea. I was strained because

(04:37):
so many stars that when people in in in power,
it's hard to tell them you know, I don't know,
I think that's a bad idea. It's a hard thing
to do. It's hard, and the more powerful somebody is,
it's hard to say this is a bad idea because
you don't want to be frozen out and you want
to be in the inner circle. You don't want to
be that guy. But everybody needs somebody like that, and
Fergie needed somebody in her inner circuit whatever or age

(05:00):
or somebody to go to hear that and go, yeah,
you know, I don't know. You sound like Kevin Trouble
hitting that note, and it's I think the wah wah
wah wah. I don't know that that's gonna play ya ya. Well, well, well, well,
Archie Bunker did not sound like Carol O'Connor. Somebody's got
to be able to tell truth to power, and that

(05:20):
was a case where I guarantee you nobody said, hey,
you know what, this is not a good idea. No,
I'm gonna I'm gonna guess there was at least someone
in the inner circle in that that that's sanctity of
that relationship. You're fired. No, I don't think. Because but
that that said, look, this is a risk to calculate
a risk because now she's gotten over. She's been a
big top topic of debate for twenty four hours whether

(05:43):
one thinks she can sing No, I don't know that
that's a I see. I don't agree that all publicity
is good publicity. If you get to the point where
someone's making fun of what you do for a living
in people question whether or not you could do it,
I don't think that's no. What if she can know
the new album tomorrow, people are gonna buy it because
the but I don't think anybody's going at her that's
saying she can't sing, that that she didn't sing this well,

(06:05):
or that the artistic choice was was bad egregiousness. So
she made bad artistic that's even worse. And you and
you can do that eight times on an album. If
two of them were hits, that's all that matters. And
that's where, oh, you made bad artistic choices. I'll absolutely
buy your new CD or album when it comes, not
that you would buy a CD anymore, but like, are

(06:26):
they buying it before they hear it decision? Yeah, no,
that's it. They're gonna say, you know what, you made
a bad decision with the anthem. I don't care that
you have the number one club hit in my life.
In my life back before you could do this, there
are many times I bought a whole album or a
CD for one exactly. But now no, I'll buy it
for a dollar twenty nine off iTunes. But that's all

(06:46):
they're hoping to do to get them all the vacation
off the nine and whatever their cut is. We gotta
go into the contract. She's got to give songs away
now because of this, Oh you have to. You have
to give songs away if she's coming out with the
new album for that version, you gotta give me five
free songs, and they gotta be good ones. Not that
I want the whole album, but bluesy sexy let's got

(07:11):
those bad filler ones that did the last I know,
Bob has his I know, Alex tysherts down and because
he's gonna spin those bluesy sexy things and put another
backing track to it, and he's gonna and people are
gonna be getting hitting their freak gun with her latest
bluesy album. No one's gonna do it choices, no one's

(07:34):
gonna listen. They will just because Draymond Green laughed about
it and they wouldn't talk about it, and Steph Curry
tried to, you know, be that guy standing there strong
and and then eventually he started laughing. You know what, everybody,
everybody came together in that moment. I'd rather listen to
bleeding Gums Murphy. I'd rather And he's falling asleep, the

(07:56):
sun is getting dark completing comes. Murphy is still going.
I mean, honestly, that she needed someone to tell her, Hey,
you know what, this is not a great idea, you know,
And that's that's the thing, you know. Sometimes it's your wife,
her husband. Sometimes that's your manager. Sometimes it's a friend.
But somebody's gotta do it. My wife always tells me
when she thinks I have a bad idea, and I
don't know. But don't you think you said no, this

(08:17):
is a bad idea. But don't you think no, it's
about Okay, it's a bad idea, but your broaderline. Michael
Keaton wron't walking around at night shift dictating new thoughts
and ideas and products and combinations every thirty. Hey, what
if I crank call people at night and just say, Dad,
I'm wasted, come pick me up, and I give it
a dress and then I hang up the phone. That
guy's gonna be driving around for hours looking for I mean,

(08:39):
I'm not saying I have those kinds No, I'm just
saying I don't have those kinds of ideas. That's not
do it. I don't want to hear that. I'm not
saying but I'm not. I'm saying I'm not that guy.
I'm not that guy that's gonna do that. My ideas
usually are really really good. Once in a while one
is not a great one. I have underwear, and then

(09:01):
I have backup underwear, backup underwear. Oh by the way,
might not be the worst thing in the world, depending
on where you go for dinner and what you eat. Oh,
couldn't make it to the bathroom because it was being
cleaned or someone was in the stall. And now I
need backup underwear. I get rid of this one pair
and I'm good. I bring backup T shirts all the time.

(09:23):
I got him in the car case I gotta go.
If I go out to dinner, then I'm going out
and something happens and I spell, I bring a backup
T shirt. Backup underwear is the next thing. Backup socks
could work too, if you have sweaty feet. How do
we market backup underwear? Backup on It's the same as
regular underwear. You just know he's just putting in the car.
Just here. We're just here to back you up with

(09:44):
this underwear. Be sure to catch live editions of That
Jason Smith Show weeknights at eleven pm Eastern eight pm
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio
app Lebron James was the big winner of All Star Weekend.
The publicity behind his feud with Laura Ingram, the picking

(10:09):
of the teams, the competitiveness of the All Star game
winning the m v P. Lebron certainly won the weekend,
and one huge headline coming out of it was again
Lebron James's love for the city of Los Angeles. I
think Ella is a perfect place the whole All Star weekend. Um,
it's one of the few cities that we have in

(10:29):
our league that can accommodate all of this. And what
I mean all of this. You've got over two hundred
plus countries that's covering the game. You've got so many
people from all over the world coming to watch our
game and just be a part of All Star Weekend.
And we know the traffic. We we understand how but
traffick is traffic, and l a can accommodate that has
built for stars, has built for entertainment, has built for

(10:51):
cameras and and bright lights and um, and that was
a great place where I hope everybody had a great weekend. Um.
I know I did. I know my family did so.
Um it was a great weekend. This is all part
of the dance that Lebron James and Magic Johnson have
been doing for the past two months. You know, we
did Dan Patrick Show last week with Ryan Hollins, former

(11:12):
NBA Star, and we talked about this that all right.
Look at the stories that have come out revolving around
Lebron James. This is Lebron and Magic doing this whole Hey,
this whole courtship thing from far away. This was, oh sources,
Lebron could go to the Warriors. Why Ryan Hollins told us,
you know, he's not happy with how things are going

(11:33):
with the Lakers. He wants throw it out there. I
could go to the Warriors. Then what happens next? Magic
Johnson says, oh, you know, Greek freaks gonna win a
title at some point. He's that good gets busted for tampering.
You think you're the only one, No, Greek Freaks. A
guy we can get in a couple of years. We
can't wait for him. He hasn't been fined related to
Lebron James yet and not yet five under grand from
Paul George because he was on a late night TV
show hanging out with Kimbell. Fifty grand for the Janna's

(11:56):
intend to compo. Uh comments and now Joanna's is gonna
come work out with Kobe Bryant. How do you like that?
Agent Kobe going on? And then then the words Houston
came up a bunch this weekend related to Lebron as well.
The Lakers cleared the decks to sign Lebron. They traded away.
They trade, will trade you the guys that you need

(12:18):
to compete this year. How about that. We'll give you
Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nanson. It's awesome. When you leave,
you can at least say, Okay, here's a couple of
good guys, and maybe Cleveland's not in that bad of shape. Look,
will help you this year. Lebron will help you this year.
And then you come here and now you have Lebron
saying glowing things about Los Angeles, like this is a
big dance that's going on between Lebron and Magic. And

(12:42):
I'll tell you what's going to come up of this
dance that has to Lebron will not come to Los
Angeles if LaVar Ball is part of the picture. He's not.
He's not gonna come to a team where he's gonna
share this spotlight with LaVar Ball and this me a
Lonzo Ball on the Lakers. He won't do it. He's

(13:02):
not gonna have pot shots taken at him because LaVar
Ball make headlines. Oh hey, do here, LaVar Ball said
about Lebron James, because honestly, how many people take shots
at Lebron James obviously public shots, not many. Kyrie Irving
does the whole Oh hey, yeah, by the way, I'm
gonna give you this against Lebron'll give you this against Lebron.
LaVar doesn't care, and he will go out there and

(13:23):
he will just say, Lebron shouldn't be coming. Here's Alonzo's team,
whatever it is, and Lebron James is not going to
be part of this. He's not. He's gonna say, you
gotta ditch him. You can trade him and get me
somebody good. You know, you want to do a sign
and trade somewhere. You can say, send him someplace else
and get me a guy that I need, and I'll
come to l A. But there is no way he's

(13:43):
coming here. While LaVar Ball and Alonzo Ball are in
the picture and and and line alonzolways say because it's
gonna be LaVar Ball, there's no way. All the controversy now,
Lavarz is licking his chops that somebody else could come
to l A and be a foil for him that
would help push up the big Ball or brand style
that he's living. He's got nobody right now. He can
only fight with Luke Walton only because he's the head coach.

(14:06):
When Lebron comes here, LaVar will identify him and say,
it's like, I'm gonna go, you pick a fight with
the biggest guy in the schoolyard. If you don't want
to get beaten up for a while. LaVar will go,
you are gonna make me, You're gonna make me. It's
like when when you see stars in entertainment start wars
with people that are above them and because if they
get engaged, it helps their brand. You know that that's

(14:29):
a that's a very big thing. And that's why you
see a lot of big stars sometimes don't get involved
when people are taking when when lesser stars take pot
shots at them on Twitter, their movies, whatever it is,
because the minute you get engaged, that boost, that boost
your bread. Oh I got somebody that will get back
and forth with me now and they're lowering themselves to me.
But it doesn't matter because I get the publicity coming
off of this. Lebron smart enough, because that's exactly what

(14:51):
LaVar Ball would But that's it. I don't think Lebron
would engage. I think if there's anybody out there in
the world, I mean, all those comments were we're downright commissioner,
Like the extolling the virtues of Los Angeles and traffic
and how you have to navigate and all the star
powered out That was like something you'd expect Adam Silver
to say as a recap for the weekend what Lebron

(15:14):
James Kidney and with the He's been very effusive with
his praise of of Alonzo's game, remember those from It's
a couple of months now since Alonzo has been on
the shelf, but to this point, and he's avoided that
that whole rabbit rabbit hole. You know, a little bit
of engagement earlier on when when LaVar went after Lebron's kids.

(15:36):
So we've seen that a little bit before. But I
think that's been pushed off. And could they coexist? I
think if Lebron wants in, they'll they'll do whatever he says.
But but I'm ignoring that full Now you're calling your
teammates dat a fool, and now that becomes a thing.
But Alonzo doesn't comment on it either way. Dad's gonna

(15:58):
be Dad every time he's been given an opportunity to
say something of substance one way or the other. He's past.
It's his best assist of the year has been the well,
I'm just gonna push this straight straight out. I'm not
gonna talk in favor of the Lakers, and I'm not
supporting my dad. I'm kind of in no man's land.
Here's like, oh, my dad's gonna talk. I just play

(16:21):
has been a Lonzo's static line. And by doing it,
you're not you're not quite encouraging your dad, but you're
certainly not stopping it. And that's what everybody's been calling
for here in Los Angeles for a long time. It's just,
you know, dully old man to shut up. Yeah, but
it's it's gonna be impossible when in your backyard he's
making a Lakers gonna say no questions about LaVar Ball.

(16:42):
I mean this has already done that. This is another
is another guy who's who's got a son. He's your
number two overall pick and was supposed to be your play.
It's like LaVar Ball is Nicki Minaj and Lebron James
is Mariah Carey. Nicki Minaj made her name by starting
that American Idol you with Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey unfortunately

(17:03):
succumbed to it and it was okay. And now suddenly
all that did for Nicki Mina was impressive. Nicki Minaj
was very minor. She wasn't that biggest star, but on
American Idol on TV. I'm gonna fight with you because
I can pick this, because I know this is going
to be successful. Everything everything LaVar Ball has done in
the last year has been to push his brand at

(17:25):
his son's expense. I'm going to push my brand. So
you don't think he's gonna miss the chance to push
the brand with the It doesn't matter. See, I don't
think it's been at Lanzo to continue the other two sons.
We can talk way Alonzo gets traded because Lebron's gonna
come in and say, yeah, this guy's because the other
side is Lakers have shown you're the number two overall
pick doesn't matter. How's D'Angelo Russell looking. Be sure to

(17:47):
catch live editions of The Jason Smith Show weeknights at
eleven pm Eastern eight pm Pacific. So while Lebron end
the Lakers telling you they could be a match, just
not with Lonzo Ball and Lavora Ball. How about this
story out of All Star weekend, we could be seeing
a change to the NBA playoffs as we know it.

(18:13):
Commissioner Adam Silver weighing a plan that could see the
playoffs change. Instead of the top eight teams in the
Eastern Conference, one plays a to play seven, three place six,
four place five, and in the Western Conference as well,
the top sixteen teams in the playoffs, we'll make the

(18:34):
playoffs and one would play sixteen. Two would play fifteen
regardless of conference. The top sixteen teams to eight in
the East, eight in the West. We're still gonna have that.
The sixteen teams make it, but they get seated overall record.
So we could potentially see two teams in the Western

(18:54):
Conference play each other in the NBA finals. That's being
debated right now. It's a nice Warriors and Rockets. Hey,
there are two best teams. Let's we'd love to see
this match up. Here's how you make it happen, because
you know so much in business, as always, let's say
no when someone brings up an idea. Let's find a
way to say no. How about we find a way

(19:15):
to say yes. Just just to play, just to play
this game for a minute, because this is a this
is something that as a fan I'd like to see,
because how much juice would there be in Hey, I
get to see Milwaukee and San Antonio in the first round?
How your interest just pete just because you see some
different matchups and what you've watched. The thing that didn't

(19:38):
come up in this discussion, not to say no, is
that there really wasn't a whole discussion of what it
hasked to do for the regular season schedule, right, it
would still be well, they would still try to keep
the conferences meaning something having the top eight teams from
each conference still getting in and then seating the playoffs
that way. The NHL did that back in when I

(19:59):
was growing up in the late in the late seventies
early eighties. It was one through one played sixteen, two
played fifteen, three played fourteen. It was crazy. It was interesting,
and doing this would be fun as well because you
would get to see matchups that we would rarely get
to see. It would be a huge thing for the fans.
But if you start going and changing things, you cheapen

(20:21):
the product. We always want to look and say, all right, well,
how many things are outdated in the Constitution. Many things
are because when America was founded, certain things needed to
be governed and ruled on that we really don't need
rules on now. And when the Constitution was was signed
and agreed upon, it was like New York and New
Jersey didn't have representatives there. They left because they couldn't

(20:43):
be around anymore for all the argument had to get
train tickets back home. So it's like some of the
Constitution was agreed on when delegations from states weren't even there.
So I get that it's it's an imperfect product and
an imperfect document. But when you start making change to
the Constitution already you stop. You know, we have amendments
and we have ways that, but when you start making

(21:03):
fundamental changes, then you're kind of you're cheapening the Constitution.
And when doesn't mean anything. So now, in the NBA Playoffs,
when you start making changes for a trend, because that's
what this is, for a ten year trend where the
West is clearly better than the East, all we got
upset players and upset teams. All I feel so bad.

(21:24):
James Harden is complaining and and you hear Greg Poppitch
is complaining, and all Steve Kerr is complaining, Oh, all
these great teams are gonna beat each other up in
the West. You know, nobody said let's change it when
the Bulls are winning title after title in the nineties,
when clearly the Eastern Conference was far superior to the
Western Conference. Then you get to the early part of
the two thousands and the West, the Western Conference started

(21:44):
to to shift. So you have a ten to twelve
year run where boy, the Western Conference is clearly better.
But it's not like the Western Conference is winning every
NBA title. They're winning most of them. So now you
are talking about a fix for a temporary problem, because
eventually the East will be back on top again or
it will be more balanced. But because right now people
are upsett and oh look at these poor teams in

(22:06):
the Western Conference. Gotta play each other. We gotta make
a change. Here's how you say. Yes, Adam Silver says,
we're gonna do this for three years. We're gonna do
You can't do it for one year because then if
crazy stuff happens and a team win, then it would
look bad and and and it would it would be
a bad mark on the NBA where But we tried
some crazy ass stunt for a year and that just

(22:27):
looked awful and we don't even recognize who won the championship.
Say we're gonna do this for three years and then
we will reassess at the end of three years, and
then it looks like it is something that has put forward.
It's a new bit of legislation. We're going to give
everything we can to do and see if this fits
us going forward. If you do it like that and
you can sell it that way, people would buy it.
The fans would be excited, the rent, the players are going, Okay,

(22:49):
you're helping us now. But maybe it doesn't go back,
and Adam Silver can always make the decision and say,
you know what, we're going back to the way it was.
It's too tough now because I can't have Steve Kirk
complaining and calling me every five minutes going our first
round matches against Miami, and the travel is unfair because
Oklahoma City only has to drive the Dallas whatever it is. Oh,
I can't believe it. How my first world problems with
the Golden State Warriors. I mean, that's gonna be what

(23:10):
it is. So if you do it that way, I
think that makes it work. Well, I think you do
it for a couple of years. Uh like that at
its base. The one question I have is do you
jettison the whole eight and eight from each conference and
just say, all right, it's your best sixteen However that
that breaks out? However it works out, And certainly by

(23:30):
doing it for a three to five or however long,
you would do it multiple years at least to get
more data points and to see how this goes through.
It allows you to work out any kings and scheduling
and travel and all the things that Silver even brought
up as he was discussing it this weekend, and change
sometimes to freshen up the product. Right, even this week

(23:53):
when we talk about the All Star Game in itself,
besides not giving the All Star teams, uh, the movie
tie in. This is where I was waiting for a calf.
What blockbusters coming out? So you could have made it
instead of Team Lebron, their their team Incredible Boy and
the other is Tea. Yeah, whatever the case, however you

(24:14):
want to sell it that you could have put names
instead of Instead it's Team Lebron and Team Stephen. Just
didn't work. Team Hugh Jackman Team Greatest Showman. Yeah, there
you go. But even when you're trying to get over
with this product and everybody comes away all slapping each
other on the back, ratings were still almost a full
point lower than the Pro Bowl that had no promotion

(24:35):
and nobody gave a damn about or so they told me.
And this with NonStop hype and everybody involved in Hollywood
and all these different gimmicks and gadgetry and everything else,
you still had ratings down from a year ago, and
you still got crushed by the Pro Bowl. So while
you're making in roads, and you're making a lot of
pushing in a lot of other ways, and certainly we've

(24:56):
seen the ratings for T n T and you're getting
more women to watch, there's a lot of good metrics.
This event in and of itself shows you there's still
some work to be done. Maybe by changing up the
playoffs you can reinvigorate and and maybe there's that that
upset and and then you start wringing your hands, going,
all right, did we have too tough a road now

(25:17):
for the Warriors? Because now they'll play a team they
haven't seen five times in a season, and who knows
maybe someone in the East has that magical licks or
that can take them out. Early said, but they were
supposed to be the best, and all hell breaks lose.
Steve Kerr is now complaining, and you've really got a
problem if you're Adam Silver. But you know what, since

(25:38):
I like chaos in between the white lines of our sports,
let's go. Be sure to catch live editions of that
Jason Smith Show weeknights at eleven pm e stern eight
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app. After the news today that the Jets, according
to many sources, could be preparing to offer Kirk Cousins

(25:59):
a fully guaranteed contract, fully guaranteed revolutionary in the era
of the NFL, that is never happening unless it's a
two year deal. As the NFL p A. Everyone remember
into these ears their seats and they're bouncing going, Yes,

(26:20):
what's that dog with the big ears? What's it done
with the big ears? The bigger what's that one dog?
One dog's Johnson? No, No, what's that? What's that one
dog's got? The really big ears? Not a pinchers a dobee?
Are you trying to go to up? And who the
alpha dog. No, it's actually thinking of that video where

(26:42):
Snoop Dog turns into a dog. Right, this is what
everybody is thinking about because they've heard that phrase guaranteed
contract for Kirk Cousins. I guarantee you the Jets will
end up with Kirk Cousins. And it's very simple, revolutionary,
It's very simple. They will do whatever it takes to

(27:05):
get him. Now, why why is kirk Cousins so different?
Number One, the Jets are fighting a relevancy issue and
they're not gonna get any top tier free and they
want to change the image of the Jets. They had
a couple of year run when they went to back
to back ANFC title games. Rex Ryan was great, shooting
his mouth off. Life was great. Then Rex Ryan turned

(27:26):
into a punch line. The Jets turned into a punch line.
They're not gonna get any big free agents to come
Josh McCall, Josh McCown. They need somebody who was going
to tell the rest of the league it's okay, come here.
I believe in this vision. Kirk Cousins has said, I
want to win. The Jets will overpay for him because
they have to hundred million. Let's say they guarantee and

(27:49):
fully guarantee hud million dollars. That's not that big a deal.
Jimmy Garoppolo got ninety million guaranteed for three years off
of four games. Let's say you give Kirk Cousins an
extra year and you give him five years. Okay, okay,
that's the cost of doing business. And he's a guy

(28:09):
that is gonna throw for thirty touchdowns back to back
four thousand yard seasons. He's the best free agent quarterback
that has hit the market in a long time, which
makes you wonder. Board of the Redskins know what they're doing.
But the Jets will overpay for him and he will
have no choice but to sign. Why will the Jets
do it? Because sometimes you forget and always remember when

(28:30):
Amy Trask came on Now frequent she comes on the show,
friend of the Show, former CEO of the Raiders. Now
she's in an analyst for CBS Sports. As many things.
She wrote a book, You Negotiate Like a Girl. She
talked about why Al Davis would sign certain players and
give them contracts that to everybody else to go point,
why is he giving this guy a contract? Think about
the future for the Raiders? Well, when you're an eighty

(28:52):
year old man, eighty five year old man that has
grown up, you know, not in the advance of the
medical technology. You're thinking, how much time do I have left.
I can't sit here and look at this team. It's
my team. I can't look at this for the next
ten years. I gotta make it. I want to win now,
and if I gotta pay for these guys now, I
gotta pay for these guys now. The Jets have an
owner right now who doesn't really care. Woody Johnson is

(29:12):
the ambassador to the United Kingdom from the United States.
He is not involved at all with the Jets, loves
the Jets, loves it, loves it, loves it now, has
pushed everything off on his brother. So now Christopher Johnson
is okay, Hey, I want the team to win. I
want to succeed. And Mike mccagnan is a GM that
is very simple. He wants to keep his job. He
knows that if I draft a guy and he's not

(29:34):
ready and we lose, I'm going to get fired. He
wants to keep his job. Todd Bowles wants to keep
his job. If Todd Bowles can't turn a quarterback into
a star. Guess what he's getting fired. You think Todd
Bowles is gonna say no to giving Kirk Cousins hunter
million guaranteed when he knows if we draft Lamar Jackson

(29:55):
or Baker Mayfield and they stink I'm out, Todd Bowles
is out and it's somebody else coming in chink Baker
Mayfield or Lamar Jackson or whoever it is. Everybody will
be on board with giving Kirk Cousins that kind of money.
And Kirk Cousins is not gonna say no and take
less money because that's bad for the other NFL players.
If the Broncos say here's eighty million guaranteed and the

(30:15):
Jets ay one twenty five and he says no, NFLPA
is gonna go. Dude, what the hell man think about
the rest of us? I mean, I know it's eighty
million twenty five, but think about the trickle down effect
you have to take, help take care of you take
one million guaranteed. What does that mean for all the
other quarterbacks coming up. Everybody's gonna get paid more money,
everybody's gonna get fat. The Jets will get Kirk Cousins well,

(30:36):
and that's the big thing that's been bandied about in
terms of would be landing spots for Kirk Cousins, the
old do you want to win right now or do
you take your cash and be the the building block?
And we we talked about the trade of Alex Smith
heading to Washington. Look at the guaranteed money. A guy
that's been in the league some fifteen years at this point,

(30:58):
Kirk Cousins, the guy that set the new bar garoppolo
did it. Nearly ninety million dollars of the guaranteed going
to the forty Niners flush with cash, the Browns flush
with cash. Joe Thomas making the commentary, you know earlier,
it's like you've got your you're the market center, so
you've got this one opportunity. And he's been franchise tag

(31:20):
twice in a row, so he did quite well for
those two years. But now finally given the opportunity, assuming
that everything goes through with said Alex Smith deal when
the league year begins in mid March, that Kirk Cousins
actually has the opportunity to maximize his value. Why are
you taking less for the off chance that Jacksonville's achieves

(31:40):
as they did this year? On paper? It looks good, right,
it looks like they're gonna franchise tag Allen Robinson. The
defense was great, a lot of sacks and everything else.
I still raised my hands saying they played four offenses
that were in the upper half of scoring in the
course of the NFL season. So of hanging asterisk on
the on the overall achievements as you go down the

(32:03):
wire there, but you're not gonna leave thirty million dollars
on the table. The NFL p A the amount of
pressure from the representatives and throughout the union when you're
fighting for more revenue share, and that's gonna be one
of the big pushes coming on the next CBA of
trying to make sure your piece of the pie remains

(32:25):
as it is or grows. That you're not gonna have
quarterbacks throwing money back to the pot and you know
the guarantee. And Thomas made the astutely made the point saying, look,
we've seen Brady do it, and what happened. Patriots promised
that they'd go spend that money and then they still
hard balled guys and watch watched them walk away. West
Welcome being the obvious the obvious example there. So if

(32:49):
they're saying, hey, here's the trickle down that will go
spend the money here, here, and here. Unless it's written
in blood and signed, notarized, it's not gonna happen. That
money is not gonna get spend. How many teams have
done that, They end up cheaping out at the rest
of the position. So for Kirk Cousins, you go maximize
your deal and hope you build around you. Hope. Robby Anderson,

(33:09):
you can go google it on the internet. He was
the leading receiver. I have to bring it up. He
had more he's charged with more downs and he had touchdown.
He made a lot of threats in the face exactly.
So google it you find out. But he may be
suspended for a while. So may he may be suspending.
Hey it's got to have chocolate tomorrow. I mean, come on,

(33:32):
he may be suspended. All right, He's likely out at
least four games. Okay, so there goes your top receiver.
We're rebuilding at the running back position. You've got other
needs that need to be addressed. But you know what,
that's got to happen with the rest of the money
under the cap because you gotta go get paid, you know,
because if I thought for a second the Jets would
not cheap it out. But if they would say, hey,

(33:52):
we'll give you seventy million guaranteed, and the Broncos same
come up with, all here's sixty million. I'm just throwing
numbers out there. Obviously with Garoppolo it's a bigger deal.
But let's say now you're saying, okay, the Jets come
up with you know, eighty five million guaranteed and the
Broncos are like at eighty. Then I could see Kirk
Cousins going, ah, you know it's five million. It's this
the Broncos added another year on the end. I'm gonna

(34:14):
go with Denver. I got a better chance to win.
But the Jets are gonna come up within. They're not
gonna allow him to say, no, here's five years and
one guaranteed guarantee. Are we done? Are we done? I mean,
you want to go talk to the Broncos. Broncos ain't
doing it. John Elway is not doing that. No, at
some point you have to go over the top. He's
not like the Jets. The Jets will go over the
jor continually trying to chase not only the Patriots, but

(34:36):
keep paying all the Buffalo Bills keep getting in their
own way, so that's okay. But but in theory, the
Dolphins are in theory, and so again you're chasing the Patriots.
So you've got to make the big splash. And I
like McCown. McCown played well at at a good year
for what they were. But now it's time to try
to pony up and be an actual competitor. Just for

(35:00):
your sake, Jason, and get him. The wheels are gonna
fall off the Mets season in mid May, and I'm
gonna have to deal with you the entire time. That's okay,
Minicamps by then, Okays, be sure to catch live editions
of The Jason Smith Show weeknights at eleven p m.
Eastern eight pm Pacific. The party is underway here in

(35:23):
Lawrence as the Jayhawks put the hammerd out with a
thirty point where Oklahoma of fining the loss in Jenny
where rock chock it up? Hey you wins? So there
it is Kansas Radio Network on the call, Oklahoma and
Trey Young go down one oh four seventy four, a

(35:45):
thirty point defeat for the Sooners. They have now lost
six in a row, nine of twelve, and they said
at sixteen and eleven, six and nine in the Big twelve,
they are third from the bottom there in eighth place. Yes,
there's ten teams in the Big TWELP, just go with it.
Remember when they were ranked fourth, Remember last week when

(36:07):
they were wrecked four and things are great? Well, no,
they were still in the top sixteen when they at
first imaginary seating nonsense. He made for television event to say, hey,
look how badly we can put the sixteen together, so
that you'll now debate. Go debate Michigan State's eleventh. Here,
go debate. Here's Oklahoma that hasn't one in a month.

(36:27):
Trey Young said after the game tonight he feels no
concern over a six game losing street quote. I know
we've got three more games. If we take care of
business like we're supposed to, these next three games will
be fine. They have Kansas State, who they just lost to,
Iowa State, who is not very good, and Baylor, who
was also ahead of them in the standings. Everything this

(36:49):
season in college basketball has been Trey Young. ESPN does
Trey Young tickers and updates and stats and oh, by
the way, we're breaking into programming to show you this
is what Trey Young has done. Because the guy has
had some incredible games this year. He's also had some
pretty crappy games. He's had a lot of crappy games.
And the fact that he said after their game this weekend,

(37:10):
I get guarded like nobody else in the country. Oh,
I'm sorry. You're getting guarded too tightly. Is that what's happening.
You're not scoring forty eight points now, you're getting guarded
too tightly. Dude. Come on, man, this is D one
college basketball. You're going to the NBA. You can't. You
can't sit here and complain and go man, they're guarding
me too good. Okay, we'll have everybody back off. You're
gonna see this season. And if anybody has Oklahoma in

(37:33):
the tournament, now you're crazy. I can't even take you seriously.
I know he's a star. The only way you'd put
him in right now is if you want to get
a star in the tournament. And I would rather people
just say that. You know what I do college basketball, uh,
power rankings and and bracketology for a living, and I
want to put Oklahoma in because I want Trey Young
in for at least a game or two. That's the

(37:54):
only way you can justify it because they are terrible.
Sixteen and eleven, I don't care. Tell me all the
big all of is great now, the Big twelve is okay.
But you're sixteen and eleven, you are three games under
five hundred. You just got steamrolled by thirty points against Kansas,
who has had a lot of difficulty this season as well.
At certain times, if I got one person that tells

(38:14):
me they deserve to be in over Syracuse, I'm gonna
lose my mind. Somebody's gonna send that in at How
about a fresca right get ready, because right now you
could see a tournament without Trey Young, and it would
it would be the right thing because Oklahoma stinks right now.
They stink. And even if they win their last three games,
oh we're nineteen eleven, were nine and nine, they're still

(38:34):
on the periphery. They're on the circumforts of the n
c A tournament. They're gonna need to do They're gonna
need some favors done for them to get They didn't
do it for Ben Simmons and l s u. They
went nineteen and fourteen. Simmons here and Simmons. We gotta
see Ben in the SEC didn't do it for it.
When you look at it, the eleven points, three and

(38:55):
thirteen from the field today, nine assists five tourno is averaging.
I think it's like five four turnovers per game as well.
And you look at the recent run. The last win
came ut a two point victory against Baylor on thet
of January. Otherwise you're looking at beat down after beat down.

(39:15):
They did beat Kansas at home, uh the week prior
to that, but it's just been a tremendously difficult run.
And yet well you're we're looking for star power. This
is the time of year where those those players, especially
as the NFL falls to the way side. Except for
your funny money to Kirk Cousins and the Jets, otherwise

(39:39):
a little bit. So you have NBA All Star Game
and you have all right, now is the time to
get some run for guys in college basketball. Tredy Young
is the only guy that's being talked about as an individual,
and it's just been a miserable run for him. Ensure,
you've got a couple of thirty point games, a couple
of forty forty five point games, sprinkled there in, but
the shooting percentages down, the turn overs up, and the

(40:01):
team as a whole lot of standing around waiting for
him to play hero ball. Get ready for Attorney without Trade?
Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, Young Long Long. In the latest
rankings released today, before the thirty point the burial, uh,
they were in the others receiving vote column. They had
one vote in each poll. Whoa whoa, whoa what vo

(40:24):
wo woa wolve. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Jason Smith Show weeknights at eleven pm Eastern eight
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app. So far, the ratings for the Olympics have
been in the toilet. They've not been very good. They've
been down there. You've just got the first, uh, couple

(40:46):
of rating stories for the first few nights of the
Olympics down and it's it's been a very low rated Olympics.
And this is not surprising because we have become and
this is this is where are you want to blame
the NBA for that? You blame the NBA because you
can blame the NBA for any downturn and popularity for

(41:07):
the NFL, the complamer for the Olympics because the NBA
has turned us into a star obsess society. They have
decided it doesn't matter. We're gonna we're gonna ran individual
stars down your throat until you realize that they are
the most important thing in the world. And it was
a great strategy where the NFL was always hey, the
name on the front of the jersey is more important
name on the back. Superstars are organic. They grow. Now

(41:29):
the NFL suffering why because they don't have enough stars.
The Olympics the same thing. We still love the stories
of the the unknown athletes who were so great. Now
look at this and you know there's a great story
every five minutes. And now it's Hey, if you haven't
heard of Chloe Kim, we're gonna tell you about it
again and again and again and again. A lot of
stories out there before the Olympics and again and again.

(41:52):
But they're not stars. We need stars to cut through
and the Olympics. We need Lindsey Vaughan, we need Shawn
and White, we need that aren't in the game. We
need the Olympic players to be from the National Hockey
League because we need any kind of star power. There's
no star power in these Olympics. None zero. So while

(42:14):
in the past that has been hey, it's been a
combination of stars and unknown stories, which are great, now
it's been here's these unknowns and here's some other crazy
stories that are going on. And like I said, this
is a this is a background of music Olympics. This
is what you put on at night while you doing
other things in your house and you're watching the Olympics
for a couple of minutes and then you're moving on

(42:34):
to something else. That's really what this Olympics is. Well,
the other side of it being that the United States
isn't dominating right one, there's not a ton of events
we usually dominate, but that there's there's the breakthrough right
where someone's having a tremendous run and it's something different
Sean White. We've seen when zy Van didn't metal and

(42:57):
then withdrew from this next team of and as all
the stars decided there they weren't going to participate, she said, well,
if they're not gonna play along, why why should I.
So there's an event that you basically just wave the
white flag on and just moved on. In hockey, got
a three one lead into the third period, but trying

(43:17):
to identify the players without the the NHL branding is tough,
and just in general, it gets lost in the in
the cycle. There's not that build up, that anticipation that
you had of, you know, when you're going to a
summer event, and it's like, all right, can Michael Phelps
add on more medals to this already ridiculous run, And

(43:38):
there's you know, that legacy and history aspect. You don't
have that here, And trying to get people to jump
in midstream on stuff that's taking place at seventeen hours
from their time zone becomes a difficult proposition. Even I
don't even know that the time zone is a big
thing because we've always dealt with time zone issues and
you can still more pronounced this right, But but you

(44:00):
can see them if you really want to see it.
You can see it live on your someplace else. You
can already see that. Now there's more avidence. It's not like, well,
guess what, you're screwed because you're not seeing it till
eight o'clock at night. You canna, So I don't think
that's that. But in the immediacy of the way we
consume things anymore, is it also just I got the result.
I got what I needed here. Want to see stuff

(44:21):
I think you still are for, I'm gonna see it.
They're gonna run a thirty. Maybe you have that, but
but certainly just the way we consume things, it's the
problem every sport is facing. Fox Sports Radio has the
