A big run by David Montgomery for first down, fifty
yards rushing tonight. Look the rushing attack with Montgomery and Gibbs.
It was more balanced tonight. Look, the Lions have no
problems right now. But I'm sorry, but there is a
big thing with Dan Campbell's fourth down gambles. Right with

Campbell's gambling calling, Campbell's gambles gambling. Is he getta host
a game show after Travis Kelcey. Look, the gambles on
fourth down are great when they work, right. See, But
I'm old enough to remember the NFC Title game last
year when we're gonna go for it on fourth down
in the second half on the road in San Francisco,

and we didn't go to the Super Bowl because of it.
Right now, you did it three times tonight. You go
forward to the end of the end of the first half,
you throw a touchdown, you go for it on fourth
and one from your own thirty yard line, don't get it,
and you lose the lead, you go for it here
on fourth and one from the twenty yard line, where
a field goals gonna give you the lead, but yet

you have to defend for the last thirty seconds. Okay,
not ideal, but still most teams would say, listen, I'll
put my defense on the field to defend for thirty seconds.
We got to make sure we get the field goal,
because if we go for it on fourth and one
then and we don't get it, boy, that looks really
really bad. Now. I give Dan Campbell a lot of
credit because the guts to come back and say we're
still gonna go for it even though we got stopped.

Jamiir Gibbs got stopped the last time we went for it.
But these decisions are risky, and going for it on
fourth down is not an exact science where hey, we're
gonna get it x amount of times and we're going like.
It's a mentality that the Lions have, right. It's a
mentality that the Lions have with going for it on
fourth down. And I get it. But when I say
there's a concern, this is not about now or week

fifteen or Week sixteen. This is NFC Championship game. Type
concerns where hey, not all fourth down decisions are created equally, right,
Because just to use the NFC title game and what
we saw tonight as an example, right, It's one thing
to say, hey, we're gonna go for it on fourth
down a bunch of times week fourteen at home against

the Packers. Right, there's that. That's a great decision. It's
quite another to say we're gonna go for it on
fourth down on the road in the NFC Championship Game
and one time throw the ball to our fourth receiver
when everybody's nerves are kind of jangly and auDA. There's
there are two different circumstances. Just because something's a good
idea now doesn't mean in a month and a half

it's still a good idea. You know, when you fourth,
going for it on fourth down is always going to
be risky. It's never going to be something where, hey,
Dan Campbell and the Lions are pushing forth a new
thought in the NFL where go for it on fourth
down all the time, right, even the tush push, which
we thought this is gonna take off everybody around the
now teams don't even do it well. Jason Kelsey retired
and that's not work out. You know what, the other

teams have found a way to get around it. We
don't do that anymore. Okay, it's always gonna be risky.
So what Campbell is doing now, Hey, it works. And
again it's okay in the regular when you're eleven and one, Yeah,
go for it on four. It's fine when you're three
and nine, go for it on fourth down. But but
the time that I'm gonna say, it's it's weary. This
is you know, I'm old man in the woods in
a horror movie, going everything is fine right now because

your kids are all young and healthy and good looking,
and you're gonna go and and have sex and drink
beer and smoke in the woods, and then somebody's gonna
show up with a machete and kill you. Don't go
in there. Everything sounds great now when you hear buying
chips and beer and soda and everything else. Yeah, it's
awesome and beer, but it's all good. But but but
keep that here, man, don't go into the woods. There's

a guy there. He comes in here all the time
every Thursday, comes in. We play some cribbage together, you know,
you know, I I sell him some worms to fish.
He's a nice dude. He doesn't kill me because you know,
he's gotta have a cribbage partner. But you know, but
you the teenagers in the woods. Ah, you guys are
all fresh meat for him. Like it's it's not about
now for this, for for cambeling, it's about what it's
what it's gonna be like when you do this when

everything is on the line and it's the Visional Playoff
or the NFC title game and you you have a
chance to to take the lead. You have a chance
to do something positive, and instead it's a risk that
doesn't work out and it winds up biting you in
the ass at the absolute worst time. That's my concern
for the Lions, right. We talked about peaking and they

seem to be motoring towards the playoffs now. But campbelling
is a thing, man, and I get it's a mentality
and it's it's something that grows, and hey, when you know,
the more you make it, the more great it is.
But it's always going to be a risk and that
and with risks, ostensibly and invariably it comes back to, hey,
the one time we got to have something on fourth down,
we decide to do it when maybe we're gonna get it,
(09:39):
maybe we're not gonna get it. It doesn't turn out
to go our way because it's not just fourth and
a half yard line. He's going for it on. He
goes for it on fourth and half the yard fourth
and two, fourth and six, fourth and eight, like this
is when he decides to go for It's like, dude,
fourth and eight, No one's gonna tell you to go forth.
Sometimes it works out great, and over the course of
a game in the regular season, keep getting the ball

back and your offense is putting up a lot of points. Yeah,
it's great. But NFC Title game against the Eagles, when
suddenly it's fourth and one on that forty six yard line,
you say, let's let's go for it. Man, what you're
up by a field goal with two minutes left, No,
we can end the game right here. And you get stuffed.
And suddenly Saquon Barkley's catching a couple of passes out
of the backfield and the Eagles are lining up for

a field goal, and suddenly Nick Sirianni's walking off the
field going we're going back to the Super Bowl, telling
you that's my concern for the lines. That's why this
fourth done stuff with Dan Campbell. It's a risk four
out of five to night in the victory, thirteen minutes
more time of possession. They ran an extra thirty plays.
Just keep on going, margin to victory, the field goal,

you're fourth down man in the woods. It's fine, but
it's all about the excellence of execution and the guy
that you are. Bo. Wait, let's be honest, and you're
just thinking back to going camping over a weekend and
buying beer at a convenience store right now, you're just
thinking about I remember the time I went camping with
my family and a listener found me in the woods. Oh,
you thought you're gonna die. There was a percentage chance

gonna die. Instead, it was a couple of folk polaroids,
and I'm like, don't forget what my car looks like.
You're like the Wallows on nineteen eighties horror film ding

to me, it's this is who Dan Campbell is. This
is what you're going to get. Now, the defense then

let them down, right. I on one of those fourth
down possessions and decisions when they fail. What happened seven place,
seventy yard drive. Okay, the call might have been bad.
You might not like that. You might say too risky
and obviously hindsight always twenty twenty you mentioned Josh Reynolds
being the target of one of those. But when they

give up seven plays seventy ad, your defense has to
go out and do its job. Sure, right, So it's
it's the cohesive unit, right, This is I trust you.

That's how we're doing trust me. That's right. I'm a

that idea that for Campbell, this is how they run
their offense, and it might be foolhardy at times, it's
not gonna go away. That's why I'm telling you if
you suddenly thinking away that this is gonna be a
vast departure from the guy you've seen, I would be
absolutely shocked if suddenly, you know what, it's fourth and two,

bring out the kicker for that forty eight hour swirl
in the wind now at Philly, gonna push the push
the envelope one too many. That's a big fear, man.
That's my There's not a lot of fears I have
for the Lions, but there is, Sirianni. Come on, let's

interview with David Montgomery talked to us about the play.

and Knuckles, which is probably the best nickname in all
of the NFL.

He and jamieer Gibbs nicknamed Sonic and Knuckles from the
video game. Neither of them know which way where the
nickname actually came from, but Sonic and Knuckles came out.
I was Jamiir Gibbs and his speed is sonic, thundering,
lightning at the old one. He came from Sega Yo,
and yes, why they were nicknamed Sonic and Knuckles. Thanks?
Who's wondering? Thanks? Thanks? No, they don't know who came

up with it first for both. Yes, I know Sega
came up with Sonic and Knuckles. That's the game. I've
played the game. They're one. They don't know who put
the moniker on them. They don't know put the monic.

great nickname, right Obviously Gibbs with his speed is sonic
and Montgomery with more physical style of Knuckles more power.
So I asked him at the end, Hey, how do
you feel about the nickname? Scale of one to tenni
set eleven? We love the nickname. Love the nickname.

Of course, my family is all from Detroit, my wife's family.
I go back there on vacation, going back soon. I've
had the lions back for the last couple of years
now and have them such a high point right right
at that peak right there, and then you have to

as a joke to try to find a way to

make David Montgomery some money, I asked him. I said, hey,
you know there's a lot of Sonic Burgers in the
Greater Detroit area. I know because they're Sonic Burgers near
my wife's house. And I thought maybe he and Jamier
Gibbs could go to Sonic and have some kind of
appearance there and they can make some money and sign autographs.
And this is how the end of the interview went.
Now I know in Detroit, because my whole family's in Detroit,

you guys can go and do all kinds of stuff
with Sonic Burger and all kinds of autograph signings and
stuff like, I'm seeing lots of money coming your way.

I think after the carrot incident, everybody on the internet
wanted to know why he was eating a carrot, and
the story is that he's been a vegan since he
was with the Bears in twenty twenty is when it started.

Knuckles is He's gonna give you a knuckles Knuckles strong,
knocked out of a burger. Knuckles is physical? How is

That's why we're in this mess. Right there, there was

head coaching job. Come on, raise up in college basketball,
which makes it really to take over for Mack Brown,
who has let go about a week and a half ago,
but allowed to coach the last game of the year
for North Carolina. But Belichick has spoken to the North

Carolina tar Heels about returning to the sideline to coach them. Okay,
now what is this. Luckily you asked the question or
I asked he rhetorically, because it's one of two things. Right,
We're still gathering a lot of information. It's one of
two things. Belichick is either ready to start greasing the
skids towards an NFL return and can't talk to anybody
(35:09):
right now because the season's still going on and guys
have jobs. So let me talk to the one place
that has an opening right because Mac Brown was fired
like everybody, you know, that's the only place I was
pissed get to finish either. That's the only place that
really still that has an opening that hasn't been filled
as North Carolina. So I'll talk to North Carolina and

that lets everybody know I'm back on the market. I'm
really ready because I'm sure a lot of teams as
much as they would potentially want to talk to Bill Belichick. Yay,
Is he really that interested? Does he want to stay?
He looks like he's having fun with Pat McAfee every week.
I don't know. Now this is him saying I want
to let you know I'm ready to come back, and
this gets NFL teams excited, or and this is the

dark side for Bill Belichick. You know he wants to
come back and coach in the NFL. You know he
wants a breakdown Cheles record we've heard that maybe the Cowboys,
maybe the Giants, maybe the Jacksonvillejas. The other flip side
of this is is that maybe he's talking in North
Carolina because he knows NFL teams don't want him, and
all of this matchmaking that is being done with Belichick

and the Jaguars and the Giants and the Cowboys is
just being done by us. Because if he thought he
had a chance in hell at coming back to the NFL,
why the hell is he talking to North Carolina. If
he thought one of these teams is gonna hire, I
just got to wait it out. Why is he talking
to North Carolina? So it's one of these two things,
which is which is what's going to Either the NFL

has told him no and he wants to coach. So
I'm gonna go back to common. I'm gonna find a
way to get back to a sideline and prove that
I can win, and if I win for a couple
of years at North Carolina, maybe the NFL will call
me I can coach. T I'm seventy five, seventy six
years old, I'm dating a twenty two year old girl.
I gotta be active, I gotta cach. I gotta be
able to go on hikes and all kinds of stuff,

and you know, find out where my top five Spotify

Who was it, I gotta find all of this it

of those things is true. One of those things is

We got to find some way to figure things out,

Belichick is a guy you know, the floor is going
to be really high with him. Maybe the ceiling isn't high,
but the floor is high. But what if they have
just told him, yeah, Bill, Sorry, we've moved on and
you're not going to be part of who we talked
to for next year in the NFL. No, it's the
cureuriosity right of you know, I'd love to be in

the room with this one. I mean the room where
it happened. Since we cycle back to Hamilton references and
all our pop culture fund from time to time, is
what's that interview look like? For Bill Belichick in this
day and age? It was always good at delegating right,
brought in a lot of assistance, gave them a lot
of control either side of the ball. But the devil

in the details. That's when Bill went to work right
in between the rule book and where you can find
the wrinkles, and certainly defensively and overall, I mean usually
got the most out of whatever roster they assembled. Just
shouldn't have been trusted putting the groceries in the cart.
And that's where the college thing is kind of interesting.
It's kind of a spin on the Lincoln Riley thing

of the you know, realm of possibility, that it's a

said again, there's so many wrinkles to what college football
is right now. Everybody's diving away. I mean, I guess
this is the I'm going to zag while everybody's in
you're running away from college football. I'm gonna come and
take over. Just think one of those things is true

big thing with Dan Campbell's fourth down gambles. Right with

Campbell's gambling calling, Campbell's gambles gambling. Is he getta host
a game show after Travis Kelcey. Look, the gambles on
fourth down are great when they work, right. See, But
I'm old enough to remember the NFC Title game last
year when we're gonna go for it on fourth down
in the second half on the road in San Francisco,

and we didn't go to the Super Bowl because of it.
Right now, you did it three times tonight. You go
forward to the end of the end of the first half,
you throw a touchdown, you go for it on fourth
and one from your own thirty yard line, don't get it,
and you lose the lead, you go for it here
on fourth and one from the twenty yard line, where
a field goals gonna give you the lead, but yet

you have to defend for the last thirty seconds. Okay,
not ideal, but still most teams would say, listen, I'll
put my defense on the field to defend for thirty seconds.
We got to make sure we get the field goal,
because if we go for it on fourth and one
then and we don't get it, boy, that looks really
really bad. Now. I give Dan Campbell a lot of
credit because the guts to come back and say we're
still gonna go for it even though we got stopped.

Jamiir Gibbs got stopped the last time we went for it.
But these decisions are risky, and going for it on
fourth down is not an exact science where hey, we're
gonna get it x amount of times and we're going like.
It's a mentality that the Lions have, right. It's a
mentality that the Lions have with going for it on
fourth down. And I get it. But when I say
there's a concern, this is not about now or week
(06:44):
fifteen or Week sixteen. This is NFC Championship game. Type
concerns where hey, not all fourth down decisions are created equally, right,
Because just to use the NFC title game and what
we saw tonight as an example, right, It's one thing
to say, hey, we're gonna go for it on fourth
down a bunch of times week fourteen at home against

the Packers. Right, there's that. That's a great decision. It's
quite another to say we're gonna go for it on
fourth down on the road in the NFC Championship Game
and one time throw the ball to our fourth receiver
when everybody's nerves are kind of jangly and auDA. There's
there are two different circumstances. Just because something's a good
idea now doesn't mean in a month and a half
(07:29):
it's still a good idea. You know, when you fourth,
going for it on fourth down is always going to
be risky. It's never going to be something where, hey,
Dan Campbell and the Lions are pushing forth a new
thought in the NFL where go for it on fourth
down all the time, right, even the tush push, which
we thought this is gonna take off everybody around the
now teams don't even do it well. Jason Kelsey retired
and that's not work out. You know what, the other

teams have found a way to get around it. We
don't do that anymore. Okay, it's always gonna be risky.
So what Campbell is doing now, Hey, it works. And
again it's okay in the regular when you're eleven and one, Yeah,
go for it on four. It's fine when you're three
and nine, go for it on fourth down. But but
the time that I'm gonna say, it's it's weary. This
is you know, I'm old man in the woods in
a horror movie, going everything is fine right now because

your kids are all young and healthy and good looking,
and you're gonna go and and have sex and drink
beer and smoke in the woods, and then somebody's gonna
show up with a machete and kill you. Don't go
in there. Everything sounds great now when you hear buying
chips and beer and soda and everything else. Yeah, it's
awesome and beer, but it's all good. But but but
keep that here, man, don't go into the woods. There's

a guy there. He comes in here all the time

the one time we got to have something on fourth down,
we decide to do it when maybe we're gonna get it,

maybe we're not gonna get it. It doesn't turn out
to go our way because it's not just fourth and
a half yard line. He's going for it on. He
goes for it on fourth and half the yard fourth
and two, fourth and six, fourth and eight, like this
is when he decides to go for It's like, dude,
fourth and eight, No one's gonna tell you to go forth.
Sometimes it works out great, and over the course of
a game in the regular season, keep getting the ball

back and your offense is putting up a lot of points. Yeah,
it's great. But NFC Title game against the Eagles, when
suddenly it's fourth and one on that forty six yard line,
you say, let's let's go for it. Man, what you're
up by a field goal with two minutes left, No,
we can end the game right here. And you get stuffed.
And suddenly Saquon Barkley's catching a couple of passes out
of the backfield and the Eagles are lining up for

a field goal, and suddenly Nick Sirianni's walking off the
field going we're going back to the Super Bowl, telling
you that's my concern for the lines. That's why this
fourth done stuff with Dan Campbell. It's a risk four
out of five to night in the victory, thirteen minutes
more time of possession. They ran an extra thirty plays.

were as shocked as I was today with you probably

break middle of the day. Wait a minute. Bill Belichick
has spoken to the University of North Carolina about their
head coaching job. Come on, raise up in college basketball,
which makes it really to take over for Mack Brown,
who has let go about a week and a half ago,
but allowed to coach the last game of the year
for North Carolina. But Belichick has spoken to the North
(34:44):
Carolina tar Heels about returning to the sideline to coach them. Okay,
now what is this. Luckily you asked the question or
I asked he rhetorically, because it's one of two things. Right,
We're still gathering a lot of information. It's one of
two things. Belichick is either ready to start greasing the
skids towards an NFL return and can't talk to anybody
(35:09):
right now because the season's still going on and guys
have jobs. So let me talk to the one place
that has an opening right because Mac Brown was fired
like everybody, you know, that's the only place I was
pissed get to finish either. That's the only place that
really still that has an opening that hasn't been filled
as North Carolina. So I'll talk to North Carolina and
(35:29):
that lets everybody know I'm back on the market. I'm
really ready because I'm sure a lot of teams as
much as they would potentially want to talk to Bill Belichick. Yay,
Is he really that interested? Does he want to stay?
He looks like he's having fun with Pat McAfee every week.
I don't know. Now this is him saying I want
to let you know I'm ready to come back, and
this gets NFL teams excited, or and this is the
(35:51):
dark side for Bill Belichick. You know he wants to
come back and coach in the NFL. You know he
wants a breakdown Cheles record we've heard that maybe the Cowboys,
maybe the Giants, maybe the Jacksonvillejas. The other flip side
of this is is that maybe he's talking in North
Carolina because he knows NFL teams don't want him, and
all of this matchmaking that is being done with Belichick
(36:15):
and the Jaguars and the Giants and the Cowboys is
just being done by us. Because if he thought he
had a chance in hell at coming back to the NFL,
why the hell is he talking to North Carolina. If
he thought one of these teams is gonna hire, I
just got to wait it out. Why is he talking
to North Carolina? So it's one of these two things,
which is which is what's going to Either the NFL
(36:35):
has told him no and he wants to coach. So
I'm gonna go back to common. I'm gonna find a
way to get back to a sideline and prove that
I can win, and if I win for a couple
of years at North Carolina, maybe the NFL will call
me I can coach. T I'm seventy five, seventy six
years old, I'm dating a twenty two year old girl.
I gotta be active, I gotta cach. I gotta be
able to go on hikes and all kinds of stuff,
(36:56):
and you know, find out where my top five Spotify
artists are am my playlist at the end of the year.
Who was it, I gotta find all of this it
was It was Puren from Queen No. Uh So one
of those things is true. One of those things is
whether it is again, whether it's Hey, here's a message.
And the only team I can really talk to right
now is North Carolina or the NFL has said yeah, sorry, Bill,

you know, we we they Anybody could have had him
last year, anybody. He had a two interview lead over anybody,
every and everybody with the Falcons, and he couldn't get
the job. Anybody could have had him last year. And
I get that in a year where hey, my team
is underachieving, maybe Belichick starts to look okay or look
a little bit better. Oh it's better than what we have.
We got to find some way to figure things out,
(37:42):
some way to get everything back to zero. And maybe
Belichick is a guy you know, the floor is going
to be really high with him. Maybe the ceiling isn't high,
but the floor is high. But what if they have
just told him, yeah, Bill, Sorry, we've moved on and
you're not going to be part of who we talked
to for next year in the NFL. No, it's the
cureuriosity right of you know, I'd love to be in
(38:02):
the room with this one. I mean the room where
it happened. Since we cycle back to Hamilton references and
all our pop culture fund from time to time, is
what's that interview look like? For Bill Belichick in this
day and age? It was always good at delegating right,
brought in a lot of assistance, gave them a lot
of control either side of the ball. But the devil
(38:24):
in the details. That's when Bill went to work right
in between the rule book and where you can find
the wrinkles, and certainly defensively and overall, I mean usually
got the most out of whatever roster they assembled. Just
shouldn't have been trusted putting the groceries in the cart.
And that's where the college thing is kind of interesting.
It's kind of a spin on the Lincoln Riley thing
(38:46):
the other day. No, No, I'm a trojan. I don't
want to go to UCF. Did you see F really call?
Are we sure? Why is USC calling me asking me
if I need a ride to the airport. Where am
I going? Do I have a ticket somewhere? We're going
on I'm really sure that they called it like, hey,
I'm still in demand. Even fly you on our own
private plane to take that UCF drop. It's a one

way ticket. You're going. We're landing, and then we're not
even gonna stop the plane. You're gonna have to jump
out shoot once we hit the ground that we're going
right back up and leave. Like in a World War
Z when the plane lands and they go no, get
back up in the air. They go back up in
the air, take off. No, that works really well. But yeah,
it's it's really fascinating development. I guess not completely out
of the you know, realm of possibility, that it's a

legitimate desire to be on the collegiate level. But that
said again, there's so many wrinkles to what college football
is right now. Everybody's diving away. I mean, I guess
this is the I'm going to zag while everybody's in
you're running away from college football. I'm gonna come and
take over. Just think one of those things is true
for Bill Bellichet, you we'll have more no no jets

may be going deep to get their next head coach. Well,
