Speaker 2 (00:55):
To pray for Los Angeles. All good thoughts.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
It seems like maybe things could be turned a little
bit today, a tiny tiny bit.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
With the wildfires.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
Fingers crossed, hoping the winds continue to help and the
first responders can continue to get out in front of
this the fires. That another new fire was opened up
today in the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles. However,
it looked like the Sunset fire was being contained, so
you know, you kind of give and you get with this,
and and just when you think, hey, we got a
little bit under control, there's another fire and you see
(01:25):
pictures of the devastation and it's really with each day,
it feels like it's just not real, Like when when
I see video Mike of of what drones have shot
and what TV stations have shot, and it's just it
doesn't look like a post apocalyptic scene. It looks like
like a big tornado has come through because no structures
are standing and some trees are still standing, which is
(01:46):
kind of where I figured they would burn, because don't
wouldn't they burb it? You see trees standing, But it's
just it's just devastation across the way. It's like like
like a tornado came through and everything came down and
it's just rubble. So please continue to pray for us
here in Los Angeles, and many people need more prayers
than maybe you have and karma, but keep sending out
those good thoughts and if you can do anything, it
(02:08):
is fantastic. You know, we'll get to the business aspect
of this in a couple of minutes where the playoff
game from Monday has been moved to Arizona. But as
far as it goes here, please keep everybody here in
your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, just the last couple of days, I'll take the
positive out of my own world is just reconnecting with
a bunch of folks that we're checking in. It's like,
I think you're still down in southern California, So if
you haven't talked to friends and family across the country
and whatever, I'll just shoot them at out let them
know you're okay. Maybe it rekindles some of the old
(02:39):
relationships or whatever. I'm not looking at it from the
hey baby side of things, just from the hey, you
know here, here's some family and friends, all good thoughts
flowing through back here to the West Coast. But yeah,
a lot of the visuals, it's hard to believe, even
driving into the studio today, the giant billowing smoke off
(02:59):
over the the horizon and wondering what the next twist
and turn is going to be. It's probably spent more
time on weather apps and weather websites that I have
in quite some time, just trying to get some idea
of where this is all heading and what the expectations
are for the winds and temperatures and all these other things.
(03:19):
But knowing how quickly it all changes. That's a feudal
exercise because you know you're not really able to advance things.
So for the most part, it's trying to get out
with your days, but certainly try to look out and
help as you can. I mean, to show the best
of humanity. Just real quick though, Jason, and all of this.
The people of Pasadena that we're running the care center
(03:43):
basically said they got so much supplies that they're now
giving out the addresses of other places in the area
that you can send things to that they've just been
overwhelmed with the generosity and support. So all of that
to say, all of those supplies, all of those efforts
are are needed redoubled. But just seeing the outpouring of
(04:04):
emotion and love for communities is really endearing in a
time where it's been so divisive.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
And also hoping we have good news to bring you
throughout the course of the show tonight, and this again, firefighters,
first responders still fighting people, Please be safe, be smart,
and hopefully we can turn the tide on this sometime
very very soon. But as you know, our business is sports,
and we have a big game happening right now that
the entire world is watching. His Notre Dame and Penn
(04:32):
State are tied to ten apiece late in the third quarter.
I told you last night, Mike Carmon, I love the
under I'm feeling great about that so far.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
I said nineteen thirteen. I'm liking nineteen thirteen so far.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Yeah, you're feeling pretty good about it as it goes.
Penn State at different points in the first half, got
away from the run game. What should have been a
walk in touchdown ended up resulting in a field goal
try after a bad drew Aller got dropped by Robinson
at the goal line. Scary moments towards the back end
(05:04):
of the first half, as you had Riley Leonard leave
after getting slammed to the turf. He eventually came back
and came out with a vengeance in that first Notre
Dame possession of the second half. You've got Carter on
the other side injured the shoulder injury which is taking
him off the field a few times, giving Notre Dame
(05:24):
a bit of an advantage so we've got the EBB
and the flow of things, but you know what, do
we always want something close late.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
That's what we're gonna get.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Now.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Two big things from this game so far, and the
first part is that Penn State's defense has really showed
up this entire night. I spent a lot of time
talking about Notre Dame's defense last night, and they've been
really good. But Penn State's defense has just been dominant
for the most part. You're looking at two drives by
Notre Dame at the end of the first half, beginning
of the second half, and outside of that, Penn State's
(05:54):
defense has been great, but in a weird way.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Right.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
We talked about Riley Leonard who left the game late
in the first half, went to the medical tent to
be checked, and Steve Aangeli, the backup, came in, and
it really was It was one of those things where
from the darkness, you know, light emerge for Notre Dame
because here comes the backup and Angelly gets thrust in
the game, which is always really the best thing if
(06:19):
you're a backup coming in you want to get thrown. Hey,
no time to get nervous or think about it. Hey,
we're gonna spend this possession. Get you used to things.
We're gonna call out of running play. He's gonna throw
a short pass. No, hey, we're down ten nothing, it's
the last two minutes. Get down there and get a
two minute drive going. And Angelly came in and right
away you threw that big slant for a big first down,
and all of a sudden, like the air went back
(06:40):
into the Notre Dame balloon. Like that play, that slant
play that game, eighteen yards in a first down, like
you could see, Like like Notre Dame, the game for
them was just they were just like the falling away
from this game and like they weren't even in it.
And that play you could just see the air went
back in the balloon. They get down there, they get
a field goal. Okay, they're feeling pretty good. And I
(07:02):
don't know if Marcus Freeman gave a halftime speech in
the second half, but boy, Notre Dame came out like
a rocket the beginning of the second half to get
a touchdown to tie the game. But you know, and
Leonard has come back into the game, and he has
played decently well since he came back in. But I'll
tell you that bit when Angelly comes in, he six
out of seven for forty four yards and gets them
down for points they hadn't had any at the end
(07:23):
of the first half. I don't know if he was
going to stay out there and stay the quarterback at
that point, but that was the moment where it looked
like it was the worst thing for Notre Dame and
they actually found a way to get back in the game.
That to me, in a weird ways, is the biggest
moment of what we saw.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Yeah, some of that relieving the pressure because we saw
the tightness and inability of both teams really to throw
the ball with much accuracy or to stretch the field
at all. You know, to this point, Tyler Warren has
been as impactful as a runner as he has a receiver,
just four for forty five through the air. But all
of that to say, Angelly coming in and being able
(08:00):
to calm things down, to make a couple of plays,
stretch the defense, and then we see Leonard come back
and they were able to get the ground game going.
You know, the halftime stats, you look at what Penn
State had been able to do on the ground. They
had one hundred and forty one yards rushing right off
the jump, right, I mean all these big kind of
(08:22):
power and explosion, and for Notre Dame, they hadn't been
able to run the ball. Second second half begins, they
get the big eight play drives, seven of which are
on the ground for forty four yards including the touchdown run.
So yeah, sometimes you just need that one play. Keep
it close. And even though it looked like Penn State
(08:43):
had the opportunity to start running away with things right,
that they were going to get that lean that we
see so often. All right, they're running a lot of plays,
running a lot of clock, had that ten minute drive
all of that that they weren't able to put them
away right, Still keep it within within a striking distance.
Speaker 4 (09:01):
You get the field.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Goal before the half's over, and right off the jump
you get a big drive. And now maybe the halftime
speech was Freeman showing everybody, you're gonna let this guy
clown me, and then replayed what.
Speaker 4 (09:15):
We're gonna let this guy clown us?
Speaker 2 (09:17):
Hey, how on to the second half starts?
Speaker 1 (09:19):
Oh we got about six minutes, coach, great, here's the
last five and a half minutes of James Franklin treating
me like I was a guy that brought him lunch today. Okay,
so just so you know he's here's what kind of
what he said, win for me. I don't want you
to win for each other. I want you to go
win for me. This is my championship. I'm getting paid
a lot of money. This is about me. Quit being
so selfish, all you guys. This is about me now.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
One of the big things also is coming into this
game a lot of rumor, conjecture and speculation as to
how sick both locker were rooms were in terms of
gaston gastro intestinal fortitude. Here in what was going to
play out, We've seen a couple of injuries on both
sides to the ball, Notre Dame with the offensive line
(10:02):
and then keeping an eye on Abdual Carter and his
snaps in the second half after getting slammed by an
offensive lineman at a good three three spins plus straight
down on an already injured left shoulder.
Speaker 4 (10:15):
But yeah, that's a subplot to all of this.
Speaker 3 (10:18):
What are we doing with the IV situations, gator raids
and pedia light and everything to keep these guys flowing
and making sure that their availability remains either way, we
got a good one coming into the fourth.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Yeah, I look ten to ten going to the fourth
quarter Again. I told you about the under, mic, I
love the under I had Notre Dame nineteen thirteen. I
thought maybe a little bit more offensive here, but Notre
Dame nineteen thirteen. I'm thinking, okay, field goal, field goal, touchdown,
missed extra point, Okay, because there's no way it's gonna
be four field goals here at the fourth That's not
gonna happen.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
All I think is if all of a sudden we
get an offensive explosion, that means both quarterbacks have been really.
Speaker 4 (10:58):
Careless with the football.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
We did have the early interception, right Leonard pressured up
in the pocket and sailed it safety coming over the top,
one of those potential hospital balls if it was about
four inches lower and the receiver had laid himself out. Fortunately,
no harm, no file there. And then one that got
taken back. Aler had had an interception, but there was
(11:21):
a holding call giving them another crack at it. But yeah,
just to your point, you're you're under is looking really sharp.
I'm trying to find a live, live in game line
here as we go through. I haven't been able to
nail that down yet, But I gotta think we're down
into the mid thirties or there about in terms of
(11:42):
a live over.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
You gotta know, I mean, it might be twenty it
might be twenty four to twenty four, it might be
twenty four store wins.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Now, you gotta beware of the old overtime nonsense, because
all of a sudden you start putting up points in buckets.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
This is true, This is true.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
Yeah, yeah, that's where things can go to.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
That's why my.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
Nineteen thirteen kind of works, right, the missed extra point,
that's when I come on missed extor point, miss extra point.
Notre Dame is driving. They are deep in Penn State territory.
It looks like they're gonna have the ball at the
one pass interference in the end zone. They just picked
up a big first down on a wide receiver running play.
(12:21):
That's gonna give Notre Dad. Gave Notre Dame a first
down here, and now it looks like they're gonna have
first and goal at the one with a flag being
thrown in the end zone. And this has been some
kind of comeback for Notre Dame. Where Penn State, I mean,
Penn State had everything going their way. I mean this
was they were they were running the ball. You know,
Award hasn't had a great day ball, but they have
(12:42):
been running all over Notre Dame. Right, do you have
two guys with over fifty yards rushing. You know, even
Warren had a couple of plays where he ran the
football for about ten yards. So it's kind of been
the day you thought for Penn State. And then all
of a sudden, like Notre Dame just they figured something up.
I keep going back to that spark Evan coming in
at the end of the first half and just wow,
(13:02):
when you think it's gonna be a couple of sacks
and he's gonna fumble, and it nearly happened.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
You know, we're gonna get a sack and a fumble
and a punt. We're fine.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
And he came in and threw and got them downfield
for that that field goal, and that put them back
in and that really sort of eased things a bit
where I know what you're only talking about it being
a you know, a ten point game at that point,
but ten nothing is a bigger deal than twenty to ten, right,
Like when you're going into the you're going at halftime
with no points. It's hey, man, we are released with nothing.
We did work.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Can't say anything work because you didn't score.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
But you get that field goal at the end and suddenly, okay,
now you can calm down a little bit. You can
go out and execute. And it's been a different Notre
Dame team, so different that now it's a sixteen to
ten lead, extra point pending. They are in the end zone.
It is a big bulldog of a run that you know,
honestly it it It looked like Love was stopped about
(13:52):
five different times and he found a way to get
through I think, five different tackles and get into the
end zone for a touchdown to give Notre Dame a
sixteen point lead, extra point pending. Am I a bad
guy for rooting for a miss on this? Am I
a bad guy? Am I bad human being? College kickers
do fail? You're right?
Speaker 2 (14:13):
Extra point?
Speaker 1 (14:14):
Maybe I'll get a safety extra point up and good
Notre name lead safeties.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
Notre leads Penn State now seventeen to ten. I mean,
watch this play.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
Love gets hit in the backfield and it looks like
you should go down. He breaks that tackle, He breaks
another tackle when he gets stood up at the one
breaks another tackle when another guy comes in and hits
him at the two, and somehow after a third player
comes in and hits him, he leaps forward into the
end zone for a touchdown. That is an unbelievable effort
(14:42):
by Jeremiah Love. Unbelievable. I mean, really, five guys had
a shot at him, or four guys had a shot
at him, and they should have tackled him. And it's
not like they did anything wrong. It's not like I said,
there's bad form tackle. They hit him, they stood him up,
they did everything.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
But some guys swept his legs, how he kept his feet,
he he just wouldn't go down.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
That is an amazing I mean it's only two yards,
but that is an amazing touchdown run. Now he's got
a touchdown in fourteen of fifteen games this year, and look, he's.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
The guy they're gonna go to to be their closer.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
That it is some kind of reversal of fortune for
the Fighting Irish. They lead Penn State now seventeen to
ten with a fourteen minutes to go in the fourth quarter,
and Penn State will be getting the ball back after
the kickoff. Will continue to update on this of course
throughout the night. Hey, we are fourteen minutes away potentially
for sending a team to the championship game in college football,
So we'll have more on this plus straight ahead. We
(15:35):
already have two big pieces of drama for the NFL
playoffs this weekend to break down.
Speaker 2 (15:40):
Keep it here, Jason and Mike. You are listening to
Fox Sports Radio. Hey, if you're overweight, you know it.

Speaker 1 (16:35):
Fox Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with My best
friend Mike Harmon. Wow Live from the tirerach dot Com Studios.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
You're a jinx.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Just that quickly it was seventeen ten note Tre Dame
and you were thinking, oh my goodness, the lepre cons leaping.
Speaker 2 (16:53):
No, not so fast.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
Penn State just runs roughshod over Notre Dame down the field.
Singleton goes in for a touchdown from seven yards out.
It is now seventeen seventeen. Just took a couple of
minutes off the clock, so ten minutes to go in
the fourth quarter. And I got to tell you this
was back to what Penn State was doing in the
first half. But this last possession, Penn State had Notre
(17:16):
Dame entirely on their heels. That little freeze option that
that Alar and Singleton and Allen had going. You could
tell that Notre Dame was kind of frozen at the
line of scrimmage, and you know, Aler kept it for
that one big run. He had a fifteen yard run.
And I and since that play Notre Dame was kind
of they were kind of back a little bit and
reacting slow, and all of a sudden, you know, Alan
(17:37):
and Singleton are hitting the line of scrimmage and there's
no contact, so they clearly had them off balanced that
entire drive, and it was it was a great response
by Penn State. And now here it is seventeen seventeen
with ten minutes to go in the fourth.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
Yeah, they get it all popping with that twenty seven
yard pass to Tyler Warren, coming out of in motion,
comes across the face of the defense, makes a big,
like big catch Shorts' sideline ends up getting taken down
pretty violently, so keeping an eye on him as we.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
We push forward.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
But seven plays seventy five yards just like that under
three minutes for the response, So that over under prediction
not so fast. Yeah, I know, all of a sudden,
I wait a minute, we have fourteen points since talking
about that.
Speaker 1 (18:20):
I know, I know, because I only I only have
what twelve and a half more points right until?
Speaker 3 (18:25):
Well, that's just it depends on where you got in
your line.
Speaker 4 (18:28):
It was either forty six or it was forty four.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
Well, we talked about it last night. It was it
was four.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
I think it was forty six forty five and a
half when we had it last night, So I can
only have eleven and.
Speaker 2 (18:39):
A half, you know, I'm met eleven and a half
where I wind up losing. Buddy.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
By the way, anytime you see a guy wearing number
ninety nine kicking off, we've all won.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
Oh it's fall yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You just
anytime you see a guy with that big a number. U. Okay,
it's gonna go through the end zone and and through
it's gonna leave the field.
Speaker 2 (18:55):
That's gonna go outside the other side.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
At least I don't have to see the stupid ass
grid of the landing zone the ball.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
So again, we'll have.
Speaker 1 (19:04):
More on this game coming up, and Monsey, we'll have
more on this in What's Trending coming up in a
few minutes seventeen seventeen Notre Dame and Penn State. But
we already had the two biggest bits of drama going
into the NFL playoff weekend, and the number one it's
a human thing.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
It's not about drama involving teams on the field.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
The Vikings Rams playoff game that was scheduled to be
Monday night here in Los Angeles has been moved to
Arizona due to the wild fires. Now it's we played
at Arizona Cardinals Field Glendale State Farm Stadium at the
same time Monday night, eight o'clock. Now, the league had
said this was the contingency plan earlier on and in
the statement on Thursday, it said after they consulted with
(19:42):
public officials all the different teams clubs in the NFLPA,
they decided to move this. And this had happened right
around the same time another fire broke out in an
area that's just a few miles from where the Rams
training complex is, in the Woodland Hills neighborhood, So they
canceled their skill player media availability. You know, look the
(20:03):
Chargers getting ready for a game too. Remember there on
the road this weekend in Texas. Frostburg just went there,
flew to Houston today. I talked him before he left.
His family is good, everything is okay. So this is
something that we knew was going to happen. And I'll
be honest with you, it kind of had to happen
when the when the wildfires first.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Hit on Monday, and you.
Speaker 1 (20:22):
Know, obviously we're trying to look at this from a
human perspective, because that's what's most important, because I don't
know how Los Angeles recovers after this. I mean, the
devastation is just incredible. There's entire neighborhoods that are just gone,
cities that are just gone. Pacific Palace Age is gone.
I don't know how they recover. But from a perspective
of sports, because there is a game going to be played,
and they are going to play it no matter what.
(20:44):
I thought, Well, it's going to be about the air quality,
and by the time we get to Monday night, the
air quality should be okay.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
Now Here, we are in our area where.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
You and I live, which which is you know, right
around I would say, in a few miles in and
around the Los Angeles International Airport where our main concern
the last few days has been the the air quality,
right and the air quality up until today was actually
still moderate. I mean there's still days in La you go, wow,
this air quality day is bad, but it was still
(21:15):
kind of moderate. But today was the first day where
I would go outside my house and I would see, oh,
here's a little bit of ash that is you know,
that that is floating here.
Speaker 2 (21:23):
And fall.
Speaker 1 (21:23):
You could tell just breathing, and you know, me being
you know, having asthma to to animals most of my life,
I can always tell and okay, something's in the air.
I always had allergies to pollen and ragweed and different things,
and I can always tell when there's something in the air,
and okay, I'm breathing a little bit differently. And I
went outside today to run an errand to come back
and to go grab lunch. And I came back and
I told Pam and Zoe, I said, hey, it is
(21:45):
it's it's not. It's not great out. I mean, we
can go outside if you want to, but I think
it's good staying inside is really what we should be
doing here because this is this is not this is
not a time to be out. So I think when
suddenly you're hitting Thursday and the air quality is the
worst that it's been in the last few days, you
have to think that, okay, the air quality could wind
(22:06):
up being an issue. So getting out in front of
it rather than waiting for the longest time to hey,
oh maybe we'll play, maybe we'll move, we want to
play the game. In La No, they make a really
strong decision to go, and it's the right thing because
now the teams can just concentrate on football. The Rams
can leave and they can go and they can get there.
However early they want to the same thing for the Vikings,
(22:27):
and I know the Rams, you know it stinks for
them because they're losing the home field advantage for this game.
But as far as the mental aspect of having your
mind be free and being able to concentrate on the game,
now you can.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
Now they can go. They know we're playing here. It's
where we're going. We're focused on it. Now.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
We have three days to get right after the last
few days has been about being safe and how do
we practice getting ready for this while there's fires burning.
Now it's okay, we know there's three full days after
this to continue to get ready.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
We can unplug. We can get there when we want to.
The NFL made the right decision on this, yeah.
Speaker 3 (22:59):
Looking yet it also logistically, when we're talking about all
sorts of facilities from hotels on down the line being
used as shelters in places of emergency in these days,
that allocating those resources as well, you don't want to
suddenly have to divert those because you need to play
a football game, right, We've seen hockey game yesterday. You
(23:22):
see a basketball game tonight, right, the Lakers were supposed
to play and that one got wiped away, so all
of that been postponed. Possibly playing the Hornets tonight, so
you know, the air on the side of caution, take
it to a neutral field. We'll talk to Todd Furman
a little later, because there's obviously a lot of money
involved when it comes to gambling angles on the NFL playoffs.
(23:47):
But yeah, to just make the decision instead of playing
the waiting game, waiting on the winds, waiting on the
air quality, all of those things. Anybody that might be
traveling from the Midwest to decide to come out west
have time to divert their travel plans and head to
you know, Sky Harbor and go do that thing. So
(24:09):
now we we wait and see what the next shoe
to drop is in all of this. But I think
it was pragmatism and and I figured we'd probably wait
until Friday. I'm glad they made the decision today.
Speaker 1 (24:22):
Yeah, this is this is this is one of those
where the NFL generally waits till the last minute to
try to figure something out. Let's wait, let's wait, let's wait,
let's wait. Okay, Well, you know what, No, we have
to decide now. So it was it was really the
right thing, and I, you know, look, as far as
the game goes, look we'll.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
Preview into it and get into it tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (24:40):
But now I feel like we can concentrate at least
that part of it on the game, and that's the
right thing to be able to do. We'll get to
the other bit of drama in the NFL coming up
in about ninety seconds. But oh my goodness, has there
been a reversal of fortune in the college football semifinal
at the Orange Bowl.
Speaker 2 (24:57):
Montsey Bolagos has the latest. What's happening in Mons, Guys, this.
Speaker 6 (25:00):
Is a tale of two different halfs. The first half
was one thing. Now we have a completely different game.
Riley Leonard, who seemed to have been injured in the
first half, missed the final drive for Notre Dame where
they got a field goal, then came out in the
second half rejuvenated, got a rushing touchdown, then Jeremiah Love
with the rushing touchdown for Nordre Dame to give them
(25:21):
the lead. Penn State responded with.
Speaker 7 (25:24):
Their own rushing touchdown.
Speaker 6 (25:26):
It was Nicholas Singleton, his second of the game, and
then the Notre Dame gets the ball back. Riley Leononard
throws his second pick of the game. Following Penn State's touchdown.
Speaker 7 (25:36):
Drew Aller almost threw a pick for Penn State right
now in the end zone, but PI was called against
Notre Dame, so it looks like the Penn State is
back in the end zone now.
Speaker 5 (25:47):
They have taken the lead over Notre Dame.
Speaker 6 (25:49):
They're on top twenty three seventeen, eight minutes to go
in the game. Oh, after a snoozefest for the first half,
I'm glad we're getting an exciting second half. Yes, you
just mentioned while card game is being moved. That's correct
to Glendale, Arizona. Kickoff is set for eight pm Eastern
for that game. Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnolo is scheduled
(26:11):
to do his virtual head coach interviews with the Jets, Raiders,
and Jaguars.
Speaker 5 (26:15):
On Friday.
Speaker 6 (26:16):
Patriots interviewed Mike Rabel for their head coaching vacancy, and
according to the NFL Network, Glene's defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn
declined in interview requests from the Patriots, but he will
interview with the other five head coaching opportunities available in
the NFL. The Raiders fire general manager Tom Telesco today
after just one season in the NBA. The Rockets are
currently beating the Grizzlies one fifteen to one fourteen less
(26:40):
than three minutes to go in the game. The Suns
and the Hawks are tied at eighty three with five
minutes to go in the third quarter, and the Heat
are on top of the Jazz fifty eight to fifty six,
also five minutes to go in the third. The Raptors
put up a good fight, but the Cavs have officially
extended their lead or their winning streak excuse me, to twelve.
They took them down one thirty two to one twenty six.
Steph Curry didn't have a great game. He was five
(27:01):
of twenty one from the field, two of fourteen from
the three point line. He did end with seventeen points,
ten rebounds, and six assists, and the Warriors got the
Pistons one oh seven to one oh four was the
final score. Timberwooves beat the Magic one o four to
eighty nine, and the Mavericks without Luka Doncic with al
Kyrie Irving with Klay Thompson just scoring three points. They
beat the Trailblazers one seventeen to one eleven.
Speaker 1 (27:23):
Back to you guys, thanks a bunch, Monzie, Yes, the
Jason Smith Show with Mike Carmen Love the tyrec dot
Com Studios. All right, well, we have to tell you.
We have to talk about what just happened in the
Penn State Notre Dame game. As now, Penn State leads
twenty four seventeen with eight minutes to go in the
fourth quarter. Riley Leonard through his second interception of the
game that gives Penn State the football in Notre Dame territory. However,
(27:46):
it looked like it was going to be a quid
pro quo because Drew Aller really underthrows a pass to
the end zone for Tyler Warren and it's intercepted by
Jack Kaiser, friend of the show, Jack Kilach Jack, and
it looked like okay, well, now Notre Dame gets that
back and the ball the twenty yard line, except pass
interference was called on Shuler and bringing the ball the
(28:10):
Notre Dame nine instead of an interception, and the ball
to twenty Penn State kept the football for a first
down and they went in the end zone from seven
yards out, Singleton his second touchdown run this quarter, and
now Notre Dame has to come from behind with Penn
State having the lead. Now here's the thing about this penalty, okay,
is that I get. I get the letter of the law.
(28:33):
It's a penalty, right because he throws into he throws
into triple coverage and he underthrows it. It's a horrible decision, right,
and Kaiser is able to to you know, he's trailing
the play by about three yards and is able to
make this interception. Schuler is running and he and and
he's covering Warren and he puts his hands up and
(28:54):
he doesn't turn his head around. Now I get that
in when when you see and pass interference called when
the ball is at the receiver, when the ball is there,
if the guy doesn't get his head around, it's a penalty, right,
I get because we know that that's what it is
when when you stop it, when when you stop a
player being able to catch, you got to get your
head around. But this ball is underthrown by four yards, right,
(29:17):
This is not even close like there's no way I
look at this and go, this is one of those
incidental plays like he's it's not it's it's not a
play that Warren's even going to catch the ball, like
it's it's so completely underthrown that I disagree with with
the flag because you gotta have something different when a
ball is well underthrown, because the pass interference call is
(29:38):
meant for, Hey, you're being stopped from catching the ball
by a defender who did something against the rules, right,
and if that ball is is at a Warren, he
gets his hand on it, or it hits them, or
it hits any of them, or it just lands a
yard from them, I get the penalty. But this, this
is this again, it's three four yards underthrown. So I
get the spirit of the law for that penalty, But wow, man,
(30:00):
I don't think you can call, you know, that type
of penalty when a ball is out underthrown, And I
mean in general, I don't think you can make a
call when a ball is out underthrown like it's like it.
Speaker 2 (30:10):
I don't get it. I don't get I don't like
the call.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
I get it, and I understand that the officials are
gonna go letter of the law and say, hey, he's
got to get his head around. That's what we call
penalties on I understand, but wow, man sebni fine, that's
a big play to say. Yeah, even though the ball
was underthrown by a long way, we're still going to
throw the flag.
Speaker 3 (30:26):
Always said letter versus spirit of the rules slash law.
In this particular case, you have the receiver coming back
through the defender, not the other way around, to try
to get to the ball. Oh, by the way, there's
the other defender, our friend of the show, mister Kaiser,
coming over to make the interception. And I think that'll
be one of the rules in both collegiate and professional
(30:50):
sports and whatever that line is, that it's blurred at
this point that gets looked at it in the offseason,
because we've seen that a lot the bailout in the
National Football League as well, grossly under thrown ball, receiver
trying to come back to it, and because the defender
is playing him honestly, Uh, you get the Oh wait,
(31:10):
he turned around and he's coming back into me. Now
it's a penalty on me because I haven't even gotten
time to turn turn around and try to.
Speaker 4 (31:17):
Make a play.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
So Yeah, that's that's a terrible, terrible penalty in this
guy's humble opinion, in a huge spot letter spirit of
the law in minimal contact as well, right arms extending
back into the defender on a ball that is three
four yards short.
Speaker 2 (31:38):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, and I don't mean just
in this place, I mean in general. Yeah, you know,
I don't.
Speaker 1 (31:42):
I don't think that should that should know NFL anywhere else, Like, yeah,
I don't think that should be a flag. And I
and boy, that to throw a flag in that kind
of situation, it's okay, we're really sort of maybe giving
him the game in this in that perspective. Now, Notre
Dame really has to has to figure out something here
in the final few minutes where you know, yes, teams
are scored, they're both scoring a little bit more now,
But wow, that's an awful, dicey flag to throw at
(32:06):
that time. Like I feel like the official was just
I'm looking at the ply, looking at the play, and
I'm looking at what I saw the defender do, and
yet Okay, that's a penalty instead of Hey, there's a
lot of things that go into that play. There's that
there's the fact that the ball is severely underthrown. It
it's three it's three yards away. Yeah, I don't know,
Man's that's a really difficult I get why Marcus Streen
(32:26):
was mad.
Speaker 2 (32:26):
I get why Notre Dame was mad.
Speaker 1 (32:28):
And Aller just completely got bailed out of one of
the worst throws of his career. Like, I know, you
want to get the ball to war and he's your
biggest playmaker and he's a phenomenal player.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
I get it. But wow, not only was that a
bad decision.
Speaker 1 (32:39):
You know, to make a bad decision on the throw, Okay,
sometimes you can make a great throw.
Speaker 2 (32:43):
Okay, to make a bad throw and a good decision, okay,
it happens sometimes.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
But when you have a bad decision and make a
bad throw, wow, man, Like that's like, hey, I'm living
right because I just got completely bailed out of that.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
Will say it is at this moment, it would appear
that Drew Aller will be back in a Penn State
uniform in twenty twenty five. You got that going for you.
I'm coming off of this performance. But he's got a
clean interception slot right now. Right, he's only got one
instead of the three that he should have.
Speaker 1 (33:11):
He's gonna say, what do you mean? I threw one interception?
What are you talking about?
Speaker 2 (33:14):
That?
Speaker 3 (33:15):
The other ones that ever happened? They did the flashy
thing from Men in Black.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
I'm sorry. I have the box score in front of me.
Let me.
Speaker 1 (33:21):
It says I only threw one. It says like I one.
It says, why I don't see three there?
Speaker 2 (33:24):
I'm sorry? Is there a category four interceptions that were
called back by penalty?
Speaker 5 (33:28):
Is that now?
Speaker 2 (33:28):
I don't see I don't see it.
Speaker 3 (33:30):
We did get Rudy on the screen just now. He
didn't even get to shout out, much like Will Friedel
on Monday.
Speaker 2 (33:35):
Night Raw the other day.
Speaker 3 (33:36):
But just watching this develop just you know, when you
add these social media and Bloggi sphere, uhs just running
log of all of the calls that referees have just
decided to leave the hanky on their sides and in
their pockets today.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
That one's just kind of funny.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (33:55):
The complete teardowns at the edges as running backs are
getting free to the next level and things of that nature,
and then you get that call in the end they
called it, you move on, play on, next series, next possession,
Go make a play. But certainly one that Freeman got
will feel he got the short end of the stick.
On can't wait to hear how diplomatic or not he
(34:18):
is in the post.
Speaker 1 (34:19):
So Notre Dame down twenty four to seventeen. Penn State
is five minutes away from the National championship game. However,
Notre Dame has the football. They are facing second down
in about eight Jeremiah Love just leaped about five feet
in the air to avoid a tackler, turning a two
yard loss into a two yard game. He is having
an unbelievable night. Teams can't wait to draft this kid now.
(34:43):
It's like, I can't wait, man, He's phenomenal.
Speaker 3 (34:45):
Especially when you came in with the look, I'm heavily
wrapped and I have a knee spring watch they jump.
Speaker 1 (34:52):
So we'll have more in this game coming up, and
of course keep you posted here again. Five minutes ago,
Notre Dame looks like they're going to tie the game touchdown. Oh,
there goes the under, There goes the under, Mike Hartman,
the under is gone.
Speaker 3 (35:05):
You had a slip and sat down in the secondary.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
You had a slip and fall in the secondary, and
Jaden Greathhouse catches a fifty four yard touchdown from Riley Leonard.
It's a twenty four to twenty three game right now,
still five minutes left. All of a sudden, here comes
the offense. Great House runs a little bit of a
shimmy move and the defensive back just falls down and
(35:31):
he's wide open and he catches the ball near the
twenty yard line, makes makes a cut and the second
defensive back falls down. That's gonna be He's gonna play
that on a loop. Here's the rest of his life.
And to clearly a great play to the house by
Great House.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
TJ.
Speaker 1 (35:47):
I mean you had d you had a dB fault
the line of scrimmage. You had a dB fall in
open field, and now Notre Dame is an extra point
away from tying this game. It is up and good,
twenty four to twenty four. There goes the under looks
so good for so long, but did halftime it looked.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
So good that we all went to hell. I'm being
asked if I'm blind on Twitter at Swatly Dome asking
about the past inference call.
Speaker 4 (36:15):
I just want perspective, folks, that's all.
Speaker 1 (36:18):
Uh So, twenty four to twenty four, boy, yes, of
course we will have more on this.
Speaker 2 (36:22):
It is such a huge, huge game of momentum swings
now as we have five minutes left to go in
the fourth quarter.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
But coming up next, as I said, Hey, we have
another big piece of drama that dropped in the NFL,
the first big injury ahead of this weekend's Wildcard first
round matchups.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
We'll have the latest on that next. Jason and Mike.

Speaker 1 (37:09):
Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with My best friend
John Cougar Mellencamp Uh two thirty four to go. Notre
Dame getting the football back. They force a three and
out from Penn State. The game is tied a twenty
four apiece. One of these teams could be two and
a half minutes away from the national championship. We'll have
(37:30):
more on this coming up in a couple of minutes,
and obviously we got peak few tax stopping by next
hour with us to break everything down ahead of the
big game tomorrow night as well. But we had a
big bit of drama today NFL playoff wise, in that
we find out that Baltimore is gonna be without their
best wide receivers A Flowers ruled out of their game
(37:51):
against the Steelers. And this would be and you see
where I'm going on this, This would be a really,
really really difficult blow if I had to think Baltimore
was just gonna wipe up the floor with Pittsburgh in general. Look,
anytime you lose a great receiver like Zay Flowers, he's
come in second year in the league, and you know,
they revamp their wide receiving core to be is as
(38:14):
good as it's been in the Lamar Jackson era. Baltimore
is still gonna smash Pittsburgh, all right. The Steelers are sputtering.
You can see their limitations now. Russell Wilson is showing
you that he is at the end. He is not
nearly the guy.
Speaker 2 (38:28):
Oh. The first four weeks, Mike Tomlins, you know, posing
and making muscles going, Hey, That's why I do what
I do.
Speaker 1 (38:34):
Yeah, Russell Wilson, Oh wait a minute. You went all
in on this guy, and boy, he is killing you.
The offense can't put points on the board. He's not
the same quarterback as he was six weeks ago. They're
gonna have to score to keep pace with Lamar Jackson
in this game. Who is on one of those I
took that personally with the iPad revenge tours this year.
Oh you all think I stinking the playoffs? You have
(38:55):
to okay, just wait, just wait. He is on that
Michael Jordan. I took that personally tour. It's it's going
to be a case of Baltimore putting points up and
not being able to stop Lamar Jackson. Get ready for
the questions about the future of Russell Wilson and Mike Tomlin,
because it's time for that to happen. I'm going Baltimore
(39:16):
thirty one thirteen in this game, and it could even
be more. I feel like I'm being nice to Pittsburgh
with this. But Baltimore and Lamar Jackson, they are just
rolling Pittsburgh. Looks like they're running on empty and they're
trying to find answers. And when you try to win
games in a very limited kind of way, eventually you're
gonna find a game where you can't and you find
that those limitations are going to send you home.
Speaker 2 (39:36):
And that's what happens this weekend.
Speaker 3 (39:37):
I still want to know what kind of questions you're
asking Arthur Smith, if you're bringing you in after a
head coaching interviews?
Speaker 1 (39:45):
How much how much of these decisions were on did
you make, Arthur or are you told to do this?
The right answer is I was told to do this.
Speaker 3 (39:52):
There's clips this week where it's very clearly he wants
to keep injecting the name Justin Fields into the conversation,
and it's almost like he fears being tased if he
does say.
Speaker 4 (40:04):
Flowers going to the Pro Bowl.
Speaker 3 (40:05):
Great season for him, over one thousand receiving yards, seventy
four touchdowns on the year. In the first meeting and
eighteen sixteen loss to Pittsburgh just two catches thirty nine yards,
but he did find the end zone last time out
thirty four to seventeen Laffer for Baltimore one hundred yards
on five receptions for Flowers there the big thing that
(40:26):
they do have rolling for him after a slow start
a little bit injured. They've gotten a monster second half
from Mark Andrews. That's the difference. He and Isaiah Likely,
along with Derek Henry, laughed their way into the next round.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (40:40):
I mean, I'd love for this to be a game.
And I'm not gonna say I'd love to be able
to pick the Steelers.
Speaker 2 (40:45):
No, I wouldn't. I would got I told you they're
limited and the Steelers are just fooling themselves trying to
win games like this. Like it's not nineteen eighty five.
Speaker 1 (40:51):
You can't just say, hey, we're gonna run the football
all day. We're gonna get someplace in the quarterback and
play great defense and wain.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
Now it's a nineteen dy five anymore.
Speaker 3 (40:58):
It's great if you could defectively on the football to
even have that strategy.
Speaker 4 (41:02):
Nine and a half your total.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
Two minutes left to go. Who's winning this game? That's next.
Fox
