Smith tonight on Mike Carmen, Welcome in. Thanks for being
part of the extended family. All Star Week continues our
guy Chris blanc In at Plank Show. He's gonna make
me smarter about college football about an hour from now,
and he's gonna lay it all out and show the
blueprint for the season ahead as the well. The rules
(01:07):
of engagement have changed all over the place in college sports,
but certainly in college football where you literally do need
the complete scorecard anymore, Chris Plank to know who's playing
for whom and who's coaching them, New world, new world,
new way of determining a champion. I guess you could
say more seats at the table with a twelve team
(01:27):
playoff that we'll see how many of those seats are
still occupied by Big ten and SEC teams. Yeah, I mean,
I listen, Mike, I could sit here and talk about
college football until not only we're off the air, but
through four hours of Bernie Show that actually Bernie's like
got three hours on Friday night, right through three hours
of Bernie Showing beyond. But I think it's gonna be
that fascinating. I think there is that much unknown about, Hey,
(01:48):
what's the fight between four and five gonna look like
the fight between seven and eight? You know, to get
that home field playoff game. So it's just I'm excited
to see what this is gonna look like because I
think it's gonna be awesome a conference front. I think
it's gonna be awesome from an expanded playoff front too.
Also a year that I would love an end season
hard knocks like approach to how teams have to navigate
(02:10):
not only the nil and all of that stuff on
the outside, but just travel all the new conference alignance
right the West Coast teams traveling Midwest East coast often
for these games, and how they still although I mean
the student athlete, monikored like the student goes behind it
now right in a lot of cases. So you know,
(02:31):
we owed that a little bit in terms of the
processes and procedures, but plenty on that coming up in
about an hour. I know you're revving up, so you'll
get another cup of coffee and you'll be ready to
gotch on that at playing show where you find and
find me over at Swollandome. You hear Chris every week
weekend on Sundays with Arnie Spanier for three hours in
the evenings as they traverse the highways and byways of
(02:54):
the sporting universe. Lots of dolphin talk and Arnie does
that really good growl for his Arizona Wildcats. There you
go at stick and Genius one, so you could dag
him in like it's a wrestling promo. By the way,
it was the anniversary of the nWo formation earlier this week,
which he celebrated on Sunday. Was it really nineteen ninety six? Yeah,
(03:14):
that was on Sunday when Hulk Hogan famously did the
leg drop and became the official third member of the nWo.
Hulk Hogan, you can go to hell. That's how Tony
Shavanni ended the broadcast of the Betage. Tony Shavanni, Heck, god,
is he the third man? But whose side is he on?
What do you mean you don't even remember the video.
(03:37):
I've watched it a thousand times. It's kind of funny
because you think about those times in your life and
not to reminisce on a show that you did on Monday.
But it's the weirdest thing because to me, I always
remember remember that happening a little bit later in the
ninety like ninety seven, ninety eight. I don't. I don't
remember that happening whenever I was still in college. I
feel like I was out. But it's crazy to think
(03:58):
that a world a moment to change the wrestling world forever.
Seems like it wasn't that long ago. But yet you
look not chasing Mike. That's twice. I've never worked with Jason,
By the way, I don't know why I've done that
twice already. I don't know, but I don't. I don't
think it's there's a moment that can ever top that
in the wrestling Well, I'll tell you this right because
those two days, so Sunday doing the show with Ryan Hollins,
(04:21):
we did a little of that on Fox Fox Sports Sunday,
and then Monday was the greatest heel turn not sports
entertainment history, but sports history, when Lebron James made his
announcement that he was going to South Beach my talents
to South Beach. My favorite memory of that is house.
(04:41):
I don't remember if it was steven A or who
it was someone someone had kind of got wind of
what was gonna happen. Oh, I think that was one
that steven A was, uh should have been peacocking on
a lot. He didn't get nearly the run he should have.
He's gotten a lot more run for stuff that makes
no sense and whatever else. That one he got, right,
(05:03):
I'll never forget. They realized, oh, Cleveland fans are going
to freak out about this. And I don't know if
it was like wilful wilful ignorance of what was going
to take place, Mike, or if it was just they
had no idea how Jersey burning esque it would be.
And I was I was an ugly knight in Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (05:21):
Man.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
There was a lot of people that thought that he
was going to be committed to the land or what
who was was was New York inet on that one too?
Was that the final throwing theory? You had New York?
There were whispers of Chicago for a little that's right,
the bulls were so there was a little bit of
all of that. But then he ultimately decided. And that
was always my problem with it. I didn't care about
how you did it, what you did whatever. It's like
(05:42):
not realizing that you just changed the NBA forever. Yeah,
and that people probably weren't gonna like that Cleveland obviously,
but NBA is all going, oh wait, now our guys
might do this too, and and to a degree they did, right,
And it already had happened to a lesser stent with
the older version of the Celtics in a Wait. But
(06:04):
then Wednesday we commemorated the anniversary of the Babyface churn
when Lebron returned to Cleveland. See all My Life's a circle,
Just like Harry Chapins, saying all those years ago, look
at you bringing it all back together. That's what also
funny that news broke whenever I got my sectomy? How
about that? Yeah, so that's so How long was that?
Whenever Lebron went back to Cleveland? That's the celebration of
(06:25):
my that's a decade ago, good ten years, look at me.
But you know it's funny, Mike, because did you get
anything for it? I got longer pain than I expected it.
It's no good man. So it was the last time
I went to media days. They screwed me up. I
remember calling the doctor and he's like, how long did
you get this done? I told him, He's like, ah,
(06:46):
You're fine. That was it. I talked about doctor again. Yeah,
but think about that, all of those commercials during the
NCAA tournament they lied to you. Ain't that fast man?
So full of it? So full of it. But it's
funny because the Lebron thing does bring up an interesting
conversation that's timely here tonight with Jalen Brunson and what
he's done contract wise, and seeing I don't know, maybe
(07:09):
less than a true big three developing. Everyone always says
you need to have three, but we saw Paul George
leave the Sixers and our leave for the sixers, and
I mean, I guess you could say a big three there.
Now we'll see how it works, but is it a
way that will continue to be emulated? You? Thank you well,
but but it goes back. You know what have we
talked about forever in the sporting universe? Right? Lebron did that?
(07:32):
What did they do? They had to take less money
to make that work. That's right, right, it's under the
old rules. Now you had these second aprons. I had
our guy Shay executive producer, and I thanks Shay. You
put my name on there too. That was great tonight
on the rundown. I really do appreciate that. Did he
get it right or did he call you Jason like
I have to? Well, he just put well two and
a half times for you, he just put yesterday. I
(07:54):
like how he keeps tabs of him too. There was
a halftime you started with look Forever Forever ago I
would do radio hit and I wouldn't be Mike. I
was Mark because of that. Damn n c I s
show Mark harm in the former U C L A
Cord exactly. I see. So I've been scared forever. They understood,
So I just went by Harmon everywhere I could. I
(08:14):
also did that, you know, Catholic school days with a
bunch of mikes running around. But he just left me off.
It just said the Jason Smith Show. I went all
caps today though all cats, it is all cats. I
think it was a little passive aggressive to say, all right, bike,
you take that. I appreciate that. We got Alex Ticher
on the ones and twos as well as well as
(08:35):
Bobo making a special appearance with us here in the studio.
Like ever, what flight check it out? It's Bobo? What's up?
Bobo was going on plank. Are we buying Brownie James
jerseys after what we saw tonight?
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Or no?
Speaker 2 (08:49):
No, Bobo just he's just shaking his head. He just
walked away. Can you hear me? Yeah, I'm used, I'm
not used. It is it is a new studio and
bard but Bobo works in another part of the building.
Speaker 4 (09:03):
Now, yeah, they moved me up to his bit with
the Big Boys shows. Yeah, wow, helocks Now love you Harmon. No,
that that was really kind of hateful and Harmon we've
been We started here around the same time.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
You and I have been here forever. Really, once upon
a time I was going to be the weekend overnight
host and celebrating one of our guys is getting the job,
and it was going to be me and Bobo and Coop.
And then I did that for two shows before I
started working with Jason Smith. Wait, Fantasy Freaks, let's go,
And then we did the Fantasy Freaks on Sunday mornings.
If you did, you did the overnight show. So I
(09:34):
got the overnight show on the weekend for one one weekend.
What what year was this?
Speaker 5 (09:40):
Wow?
Speaker 2 (09:40):
Twelve years ago? Oh? Wow? Okay, well it was before
I got No, it would have been ten ten years
because I've been with Jason, not ten years.
Speaker 6 (09:47):
So was Yeah, so it was about twelve years ago. Yes, yeah,
because yeah that's what I said the first time. Twenty fourteen. Yeah, no, yeah,
twenty fourteen.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Yeah, wow, So I I I was on vacation get this,
cause I knew had gotten when that Ben was going
to move to the weeknight overheat, like, you know, went
and had a talk with the boss like what are
you plan to do? You know, I'm looking to expand.
I'd love to to improve my footprint. You know, these
guys used me on the LV shows whatever, and and
(10:19):
I said, well, what are you doing on that st
and he goes, hmm, let me think about it, and
he calls me, Bruce Gilbert. Uh, and he goes, well,
I'm on vacation. I'm down in Florida visiting my folks.
And it's like, hey, the Weekend Overnight. Why don't we
why don't we do that?
Speaker 5 (10:34):
Cool?
Speaker 2 (10:34):
And and here's going to be your team and we're
all excited because again not an outside whatever. And it's like, hey, cool,
you know you grinded all these extra hours where you
didn't get paid, hanging out and doing contact with Pat
O'Brien and all those guys like you get old be Yeah,
so now you get a shot. And literally I get
(10:57):
a call back going, hey, what do you think about
you know, Jason Smith, We're thinking about you. And I'm like, okay,
So we talked to Jason, and then I come out
of Anchorman two, my then wife and I and uh,
there's a voicemail from Bruce Gilbert what do you think
about this? Like? All right, and there you go. So
(11:17):
I did one weekend as the Weekend Overnight guy. There
was a crazy NFL playoff game that ended up in
a crazy comeback. So callers were insane and off the
hook with the the worst miserable experience. It was the greatest.
I mean, it just went so fast. It's like, all right,
what's your painful experience? We dumped a couple of guys.
(11:38):
I mean, look, he was great, and then it's like,
all right on Monday, Well see it's me and Smith
and here we are ten years later, one hit wonder
or one weekend wonder. Yeah. I look, eventually, you know,
all roads lead back to me yelling at people in
the overnight, is what I'm figuring. My my, we have
to we have the same roots. Then, Mike, you know,
that's why I started too. Of course I'm old man.
(12:00):
It goes back to I think I think it was
the first time that Ben shifted from weekends to weekday
over nights, when George Sadano went over there you go ESPN. Yeah,
and I did that for a really long time. It
was a lot of dump phone calls my car, I
mean a lot of dump phone calls.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Why I.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
Have a love hate relationship with the whole phone call
world in our sports media.
Speaker 4 (12:25):
Not as crazy for me. I started at Fox doing
overnight shifts. And the first show that I worked on
was Ben Mallard. And here's the crazy part. Guess who
the producer was at the time. Oh, I could probably
gets take a guess was it?
Speaker 2 (12:41):
I don't know?
Speaker 4 (12:42):
Jonas Knox ITAs Jonas was the producer.
Speaker 2 (12:45):
Yeah, Jonas worked his way from the producer to the
update guy and now he's a rock star. And now
we got history of Fox Sports Radio. Follow your dreams.
You can't reach your goals. Somehow I got it. Liv
houn Less, you're me than You're in the same position. Somehow, somehow,
I now have to tie this back next to Jalen Brunson.
(13:05):
How do I do it? Will you take less to
do the job you love knowing that it benefits you
to work with people you like? How's that that? That's
a good teas Here I go, all right, Nick Show,
He's Plank. I'm Harmon. That's coming up next to Jason
Smith Show with me Mike Harmon here on Fox Sports Radio.

Take it out there like you're preaching the good word
of Fox Sports Radio to every man woman in beast,
(15:40):
nationwide and globally. Because I did meet some people in
Europe who did have after they hung out with me
for five minutes. Here, let me get that iHeartRadio app
going for you, and then you can listen to me
back in the stage. Because I kept running into football fans, Plank,
I wore a bear's very thin hoodie as we're walking
around and running in the Lions fans and Vikings fans
(16:01):
all trying to mock me. Some I thought were gonna
jump me. They might have been a little bit inebriated
on the train, but you know it was. It was
good meeting up with a bunch of folks and talk
to some NFL. So what's your research? What your research
found was that the NFL is in wrestling terms, still
over overseas.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Oh.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Absolutely nicely done doing a work as it were, no
question about it.
Speaker 7 (16:25):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
We're here at the direct dot Com Fox Sports Radio Studios,
follow him at Plank Show, follow me at Swollen Dome.
We did a little bit of a history lesson of
our tenures here at five. Got a little resume update
for those of you that have not known of the
plights that Mike Carmon and Bobo and myself have taken.
You now know the path to get to this magical moment.
(16:47):
Well that's it, the long arduous journey to get to
hear on a Friday night and Jalen Bronson the road.
He's become a legend. Right. You got Josh Hart saying,
build a statue to this man. Now he decides, And
this was rumored, but you know, waiting for it anticit
patient four year, one hundred and fifty six point five
(17:07):
million dollar extension. Damn good money, right, hey, fantastic. Well
if you waited until after this next season two hundred
and sixty nine zero point one million dollars, so you
get in nice little cost savings or at least a deferment,
as it were for James Dolan and the New York Knicks.
And everybody starts wringing their hands, going, oh my, you
(17:30):
you're helping the owners, Like all right, well it's it's
it's a stupid provision that they put in these aprons. Right,
I've got to think shape printed out For me, it's
like six pages long trying to go through the language
and cabins of what you do. All right, if you're here,
if you have that first apron and you go to
make a move, well, if you if you're over the
limit there, you can only do one hundred percent. But
(17:52):
teams that aren't in the tax they can do one
hundred and twenty five percent. So you're screwing yourself there
in terms of movement there if you're over the second
and into the second apron and you do that more
than once. Now, here's some penalties. We're gonna freeze draft picks,
take away these type of players you can sign. Here's
some rules about trades and matching up salaries. You can't
(18:14):
do two twelve point five million dollar guys for one
twenty five. Like, it's all sorts of stupidity once again,
the Union making things far more complicated, complicated and restrictive
than needed to be, and folks saying that you know
Dolan got over No in the end, you know, Jalen
Brunson's a guy that said, all right, team focus all
(18:38):
of those things. And I firmly believe that he's that guy, right,
because there's a lot of it. You just say, well,
you bowed down. The other's like, no, you're trying to
make sure you don't go into that that restricted space
that is going to kill your team building. Right, you
just brought in bridges. You're re signing guys and trying
to make the next run of it after a fantastic
(18:58):
season that you had. And for Jalen Brunson, it's like
the old Tom Brady contracts, right, Everybody be like, well,
you know tom Brady did this? What Like, yeah, he's
screwing it up. You know the Union should be mad
at him. No, they shouldn't. Like we talked with Lebron
and the Heatles back in the day, those are outliers.
(19:19):
Everybody else is saying, screw you, pay me my money.
I don't care what Tom Brady is at the time.
You know, he only he was making a ton of money,
and he had joselle Bunchin who was making fifty million
dollars a year on her own, plus so different circumstances,
different opportunities to say, you know what, I don't need
my salary to be me's look at what Joe ay
(19:39):
Otani's doing right now making two million dollars a year.
Right now, it's all deferred down the road. Again, it's
hot and people love to play with money and whatever,
but when it's ot, there's people's money. Now that you
get mad, figure out what your your ownership group is
willing to do. And if you can find the guy
where yeah team, I mean, he's still getting paid and
(20:00):
then he has an option at the back end of
this deal and I think the extensions worth what like
three hundred and seventy million dollars or something on the
back end there that in the end, if they do
what they're supposed to, which is win and he stays, great,
he's going to get another three hundred plus million dollars.
And you know, who's to say that there's not that
(20:23):
one player an outlier in this vast world, Chris Blank.
That just says, you know what the I'm good adding,
you know, another one hundred and fifty six on top
of what I've already made. Yeah, and you brought this up.
And in the way that he looked at other dynasties, right,
he's and again again we can find about what you
describe as dynastic or not. But thinking about how Patrick
(20:45):
Mahomes has structured his deals, brought Tom Brady, we could
probably go deeper. Derek Jeter was very team friendly in
some of his deals. You brought up show. Hey, I
think it's smart. Now I'm waiting. I don't know if
it's out there yet. Have we got the hot take world?
Where how dare he? This is bad for future players
and things like that. That's what I mean that that's
(21:07):
already started. Okay, how can he do this? He's the
Union should be absolutely pissed at him that he did
this because he bowed down to the ownership. It's it's
it's a fool he take, yeah, and I don't. I
don't like that. Can we not celebrate this like Mike
brings up? I mean, this is one of the coolest
(21:27):
things that you can see in sports is now. I
don't know if they don't make the move to go
get Bridges, if he ends up doing this deal. It's
a deep rooted belief. I think Mike and what the
Knicks are doing number one, and it himself number two,
that that next contract is gonna be another big payday
for him. So I dug it, and when I saw
(21:49):
I hate digging it because you deal with a Nick
fan twenty four to seven, three sixty five. I deal
with a Nick fan every single Sunday night. You would
think that this team has had the dynastic run that
the Warriors had with the way that they're fans act.
I hate to say, but I love what the Knicks
have done. And when you have a star player that
does this, then it makes it even more I think likable. Now,
(22:12):
it also sets up where every single time you have
a guy that says I want to get paid what
I'm more earthed, they immediately become the bad guy. So
I understand right that you said it was like, why
can't you be more like Jaylen Brunton while everyone's put
together different. I don't know what you Mike. I love this.
I think it's cool, and I'm here to push back
against the hate that's out there because it shouldn't be
and it's a franchise. Then, let's face it has not
(22:35):
been at a champion They've always been relevant, but they
haven't been even near a championship level until this postseason.
And you kind of thought, all right, there's some things
to like about this Knicks team. And I think when
you have a star that says, let's make sure that
we're financially flexible to keep everyone happy. It makes all
the difference in the world. Yeah, I mean the health
obviously a big deal. Jason still has fits. And when
(22:58):
I say I'm hard right now, if I type that
and sent that to him on Twitter or I texted him,
I'd get a bunch of blank you emojis really fast.
Speaker 1 (23:09):
You know.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
It's still one of the seminal moments of our decade
on air together here, Chris. But yeah, it's just the idea.
You're not going to have a ton of players that
sign up for this, right, Paul George, part of the
whole thing was all right, how restrictive is this for
us going forward? Which is how he ended up a
member of the Sixers. Right, no trade clauses, dollars, cents
(23:29):
and where they are on the apron, especially under these
rules where you start getting all sorts of things frozen.
If you stay in that land. Now, I'll tell you what.
I'll tell you what. You won a championship, you go
out and take care of your business, and you want
a title in New York. I think this becomes more
of the norm. It's also so hard for me and
(23:50):
I know that I'm not supposed to think like this,
and I'm trying to be better about it. But I
understand the idea that, hey, he gave up one hundred
and thirteen million, but he's still making generational wealth. I mean,
that's the thing where you're one fi right, and it's guaranteed,
guaranteed right, NBA guaranteed money, and then you talk about
(24:14):
what I think it's three twenty three when he opts
out next time based on ten years service and all
of those things. Because look, Jalen Brunson also, for the
course of this season, I've never seen more Maya Kulpas
in our business than people, you know, kind of looking
and bowing the head in his general direction, saying, well,
I was wrong about his contract when the Nick signed him,
(24:36):
which wasn't an exorbitant contract by any stretch of the
imagination when signed, but certainly looks like a bargain where
we are in terms of, you know, the dollars and
cents and second and third players on rosters. And then
when you add him to the fact that he's playing
in Madison Square Garden made the Knicks relevant, you know,
plays the style of basketball that we all contend that
(25:00):
we like that'll be physical, that'll get after it a bit.
And let's face it, he does not look like the
uh you know, the the top of the the mark
kind of thing. Like I was driving into work today.
I got in a little bit of a traffic towards
losienegon the four O five. You've traveled here before, Oh yeah,
I get lost every time. So but there's a there's
(25:21):
a giant as you're kind of getting towards airport Land
in terms of exiting the four or five freeway back
up heavily going south. I'm going north.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (25:30):
They always put billboards up for movies and other things,
you know, if you were to equate it to the
billboards I saw today, he's not a Skims model Chris Plank. Now,
I don't know why you'd put that in giant billboards
off the four five, which already has a lot of
problems with accidents and bad driving as it is. But
here let's have a bunch of Olympians for the Skims campaign.
(25:53):
But the point being Brunson, we relate to him a
little more. It's kind of like the Steph Curry thing.
He's not much uh, you know, faller than us, So
we can get on board this, and Brunson certainly fits
that profile we were talking about last night. I felt
hoodwinked and bamboozled Kevin Durant let the cat out of
the bag that he's only six ' nine, But I
look at his career completely differently now blank, he was
(26:14):
supposed to be a seventh footer doing all this stuff.
You're only six nine, six nine. Guys, we got those
guys everywhere at seven foot jumping around like that, which
we should have seen in footage and been able to
make that assessment longer ago. But you know, he let
the cat out of the bag after picture day for
(26:35):
the men's national team. So chaos ensues. But yeah, the
Brunson deal, and this will be the interesting, you know,
litmus test of how many guys legitimately would do this,
because you got some that'll just say, it'll allow me
to force my way out because I know the owner
screwed that they're gonna have to go into the second
apron or stay in the second apron, et cetera. So
(26:56):
leverage for not only am I going to get that
sign in trade, I'm gonna get to go where I want.
Uh So some of that comes into effect. But unless
Brunson really ran off and the Knicks go on a heater,
which would be the best and worst in times for
a young Mike Harmon. It's the idea that you know then,
I think you could see it, But I don't know
(27:18):
that there and maybe I'm wrong may and maybe I'm
just too cynical having done this job and watched as
much as I have, that a bunch of guys are
gonna suddenly say nope, I'm deferring that one hundred plus
million dollars or whatever that number becomes, because you know,
extrapolated night eleven years, seventy six billion dollar contract for
(27:41):
for media rights and all of that, that you know
that number grows, that they're going to push that off
and not play the year right, It's it's I don't
I don't know how many guys are going to be
cut from the same cloth. Yeah, and I'm curious what
then will the buzz be like if a move isn't made,
or if they can't sign a guy, or how much
(28:02):
more power now to I'm thinking of disaster theories here
for you, sure, Mike. I'm trying to think of ways
to keep this where the Knicks aren't amazing. No, Look
what Lebron James did right. He reportedly signed for three
million less than what his maximum could have been, so
it kept them forty five thousand dollars under the second
apron forty five Thanks for the extra savings so we
(28:25):
can sign checks notes an eighteenth string center. In this instance,
Brunson's left some money on the table where if they
don't get someone he likes and it doesn't go well,
maybe there could be some trouble in paradise disaster theories
only here Mike harmon disaster theory. You know me, I
love chaos within the white lines and meeting rooms of sports.
(28:46):
You've given him a lot of power. I think he's
taken less money, but he's also he's been given some
power and I'm sure in that some assurances. So hope
the Knicks make the right moves. Right now they're looking
like rock stars, and Jalen Brunson even more so. The
King of New York. YEP, it's an old movie, right,
is it. I thought it was the King of Philadelphia,
(29:07):
the King of New York. There you go, yeah, King
of New York Christopher Walken about ninety nineteen. Look at me,
about seventy percent on Rotten Tomatoes. By the way, is
that good? Psychotic drug lord leaves prison bent on sharing
his profits with the poor, but finds that the streets
are tough about story. Let's go and there's no way
(29:28):
of watching the blood from his dirty money. That's only
seventy percent. You're all a bunch of cowards. He's Chris
plankin for Jason Smith on Mike Carmon. We'll watch that
and have storytime with Mike and Chris in a future episode.
But first it's Steve Desager, who's got what's trending in
our sporting universe? Hi Deve, Hello again.
Speaker 3 (29:46):
We'll get some updates on Summer League opening night in
Las Vegas cinema. Man, you mentioned Kevin Durant. He is
listed by the Suns as six foot eleven, but I
found the list from the NBA Combine when he first
came into the league. Kevin Rant measured at six foot
nine without shoes, six ' ten and a quarter with shoes.
There you go, And in that same class, Al Horford
(30:08):
was listed at six ' eight without shoes, and he's
listed at six ' nine with the Celtics. So you
got about the same there somehow durant maybe because he's thin,
got an extra inch might when he was seven foot though, right, yeah, yeah,
well repeating he's no seven footer, listed at six '
(30:29):
eleven and not even that. Apparently, Jalen Brunson agreed to
an extension with the next three years plus a player
option reportedly worth over one hundred and fifty five million dollars. Yes,
Brunson would have been eligible for more money if he
had waited another year, but he still could sign for
double this amount four years. For now, Brunson's new deal
helps keep the Knicks out of the new second apron
(30:51):
level of the salarycap. New York has signed og On
and Obi and got mcal Bridges. Utah resigned Johnny Chusang
four years, twelve million dollars. Detroit is hiring Luke Walton
as lead assistant according to the Athletic Now.
Speaker 2 (31:04):
As for the NBA Summer.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
League games in Las Vegas, it started today, It'll go
through the twenty second all thirty NBA teams involved. Each
club will play at least five games there. Minnesota defeated
New Orleans eighty one seventy four Terrence Shannon twenty five
points and Houston beat the Lakers ninety nine eighty Reed Shepherd,
first rounder of the Rockets, twenty three points, Lakers first
rounder Dalton Connect twenty five points, Lakers second rounder Bronnie
(31:30):
James three of fourteen shooting from the floor from three
point range, he was OH for eight. I believe he
was OH for four from long distance last week in
Northern California, so that would be OH for twelve. He
had eight points in this loss, and that was after
six points in six minutes on the court during the
first quarter. Got almost nothing after that. Bronnie James noah
(31:50):
sists and three turnovers. Scottie Pippen Junior with sixteen points
for the Memphis Grizzlies. They wound up winning by twenty
against Sacramento for the King Center, Drew Timmy from Gonzaga
four points and five turnovers dinner.
Speaker 2 (32:05):
And then there's this.
Speaker 3 (32:07):
You remember Oscar Sheibwe, former National Player of the Year
at Kentucky. He played for the Indiana Pacers in Vegas tonight.
Thirteen points, eighteen rebounds in only twenty three minutes for
Oscar Shebwe in overtime. Though the Nets won the game
against Indiana ninety seven to ninety five to Major League Baseball.
To the eighth inning in Anaheim, the Angels are tied
(32:29):
with the Mariners four to four, top of the ninth,
Braves lead at San Diego five to one, bottom of
the seventh, Blue Jays ahead at Arizona three to two,
and at San Francisco top of the sixth inning, Giants
over the Twins.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
So far for nothing.
Speaker 3 (32:43):
The Mets won their fourth straight game, seven to six
over Colorado. Mets led seven to two going to the
seventh inning to save to Edwin Diaz after two to
two out walks. Total of nine homers in that game.
Houston won its fourth straight contest six to three over
Texas Jose al Tuvey with a three run homer. Houston
came into tonight two games behind first place Seattle in
(33:04):
the AL West. Orioles were up two on the Yankees
in the AL East, but the Yankees won at Baltimore
tonight four to one, and Garrett Cole got the win
six innings, seven strikeouts. Aaron Judge is thirty third home run.
Kansas City won its fourth straight games six to one
at Boston, and the Cubs have won five in a
row in fact, the win was at Saint Louis tonight
(33:26):
and cup starters now have an ERA the last eight
games of one point two to zero. Five to one
was the final at Saint Louis tonight. Even Kyle Hendricks
was great tonight. He had entered with a one in
seven record this year ERA of seven point five to three,
and he dominated the Cardinals with seven innings in this game.
(33:47):
It just, I mean, why are the Cubs even taking
a break next week?
Speaker 7 (33:51):
Suddenly on fire, sweep the Orioles and here we go,
what is going on? Meanwhile, we've got the White Sox
losing again, thanks Buddy Home. Against Pittsburgh it was Pirates
four to one. We mentioned earlier in the show that
Pirates Rookie pitcher Paul Skens will start the All Star
Game for the NL Tuesday on Fox TV for one.
Pittsburgh a winner tonight at the White Sox. Garrett Crochet,
(34:13):
who's having a great season on a very bad team,
the White Sox.
Speaker 3 (34:16):
They let him go two innings four strikeouts in this one.
The White Sox record now twenty seven and sixty eight.
Oakland upset the Phillies six to two, and the Dodgers
edge Detroit four to three as shohey O tani at
an RBI double in the top of the ninth Among
the three w NBA games Las Vegas and Indiana with wins,
the Fever beat Phoenix ninety five eighty six, Caitlin Clark
(34:38):
twenty points thirteen assists, and at Wimbledon, Carlos Alcarez took
his semi final and four SATs back to you.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
Thanks so much, Steve, the legend that is Steve Desager.
We've got Shay, We've got Alex Tysher making it sound
so pretty. Tonight, Mike Rman alongside Chris Blank having a
blast with you. Coming up next talking about I'm not mad,
I'm just disappointed. Is that the speech in the hot
when the rec league chucker misses another shot? Who am
I talking about? Yeah? You know that's next on Fox.
(35:07):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with
Me Mike Harmon. Chris Blank is in for Jason Smith tonight.
A tweet that I have to read Plank, Yes from
(35:27):
JP Hunkle. So let me get this straight. On a
night when Swollen Dome and Plank show or on the
radio together without their usual partners, who never stop talking
about the Knicks, what do they talk about the Knicks?
The Knicks pretty story. It's kind of a big story.
(35:47):
I mean, it's a bit of guy on, you know,
the mid mid level exception or something. I would have
just kind of shrugged, said, hey, that's a nice note
for Steve, and then we would have moved on. But
it's Jalen Brunson. Brunston's kind of a big deal. Actually,
a player that I hate is on the Knicks because
he's a I hate. I actually hate the entire thing
about the Knicks because they are everything I love about basketball,
(36:10):
played that way, and I always liked Thibodeaux, except I
was always afraid guys were gonna break in the seventieth
game of a season. But now their knicks you mean
like they did this past year. Yeah. Well no, it's
same old story, same old story, like coach him up,
play defense hard forty eight, you know, the Nolan Richardson
(36:30):
forty minutes of hell kind of thing. Come to the
NBA and I watched it with Thibodeau and the Bulls.
We watched it when he was in Minnesota. I mean,
it is who he is. It's like Dusty Baker, if
he got hold of your pitching rotation, you were screwed.
You knew those guys weren't gonna survive very long without
some arm troubles based on the way he ran them out.
Great career for Dusty Baker. Yeah, checkbout history there. I
(36:52):
was reminded by somebody today that every time I would
talk about Dusty Baker for some reason, I would call
him Dusty Rhodes. So let's good times, we'll be talking
about hard times and polk doots. But it's kind of
wild when you think about the Jalen Brunson career arc
right from a guy that won a national championship in
college and I guess there weren't supposed to be any
(37:12):
NBA ready guys on that Villanova team that won a
title to being a second round pick to I mean,
I don't know. You can say that Dallas chose Luca
over him, and that's fine, but it was also you know,
they he wanted to go somewhere else. Well, it went
where his dad worked him exactly. There was a agency
and executives like, there's a lot there. There's no question
(37:36):
because you know, nepotism has come up quite a bit.
We'll talk about that. We'll push this other story to
you know, nine minutes from now in terms of all
of that talk, because because Arnadie did you know, in
one of his little zags on me on Monday, just
kept pointing out he goes, you know, Plake loves the
brownie James. So we'll get to that in if you minutes.
(38:00):
But for Brunson, yeah, he was a guy that there
was a lot of reason to go to New York
and obviously the Mavericks, whatever the communications were, and you
always take everything, you know, his side, the other side,
and what's true. Right somewhere in between we get into
whether contract talks really got serious, or they were dismissed,
(38:21):
or phone calls not returned, or someone was conveniently on
vacation or whatever the case may be. But he goes
to the Knicks and now they build this way, and
they did it without Julius Randall for much of the season.
Hartenstein was fantastic. But off he goes. So now you
try to figure out what the next iteration is, and
in theory, the Eastern Conference will get better around them. Yeah, right,
(38:44):
because they got the benefit of Doc Rivers showing up
in Milwaukee, because you saw how that worked. Yeah, it's
gonna make things better for you quite a bit. I'll
just in a conclusion, at least from my perspective, for JP,
who brings up a great point about how here we
are finally getting to hang and we have a big
Nicks story that drops in our lap. I just think
(39:05):
he's a cool guy. I know that's not the most
professional analysis that you're gonna get, but to see the path,
to understand the why, and then to see this type
of decision, it's so unique in our sports world today,
and to do it in the name of winning, I
think is one of the coolest things that we've seen. So,
I mean, I hope it doesn't work, but I unfortunately
(39:25):
think it's one of the coolest things that we've seen
in the NBA in a while. Yeah, it works, only
so well, right, be good enough until well, I mean
then they rip your heart out and show it to Yeah,
all right, it's the old Indiana Jones and the Temple
of Doom. KLi Kali ma. The drums are beating, and well,
there's that guy. Don't want to be that guy. No,
(39:47):
you don't want to be that guy. But it's just
that kind of idea for me, you know, because I'm waiting.
Jet season is rapidly approaching and Smith is getting all
excitable still Aaron Rodgers, Hey, he's got to stay stay upright,
b You know, I've long been the guy saying let
me see him when it counts that one super Bowl,
(40:08):
long long time ago. Take don't can't take it away
from him. But it's a long long time ago. So uh,
well we'll see how that flows, you know, to kind
of tie those all together. But but for the Brunson deal,
it really does bring out, to my thinking, some of
the worst uh in terms of the analysis, because it
(40:28):
immediately becomes you know, this player stupid? How dare you right?
You know again, it's not gonna affect the money from
anybody else. No, it's gonna be the you go in
and you're gonna ask your client, Hey, you know we
could do this and make these moves if you'll leave
this money on the table. And nine percent of guys
are gonna see I'll see you in hell right those
(40:52):
extra zeros. Now I want my cash.
Speaker 5 (40:54):
OK.
Speaker 2 (40:56):
No, but that's just it, right, and anybody deferred pay,
you do it if you can. But let's face it,
the life of a professional athlete. You recognize that the
uh that that sand in the hour glass runs out
pretty fast. Preach, preach, Chris Blake. I'm Mike Carmen here,
Fox Sports Radio. Coming up next, Yeah, we take a
(41:16):
look at Summer League
