(00:45):
Ordenburger in from Mike and falm on Twitter at Ornberger Richie.
Are you getting up tomorrow morning? Do your morning show
in San Diego? Like you go to bed at like
eleven o'clock and getting up at like five in the morning. Yeah,
probably more like four in the morning for the show tomorrow. Um. Yeah, man,
I'll tell you what. As soon as we turn off
the microphones, it is a race to the sack, and

(01:06):
I'm going to get what sleep i can and then
maybe just take a nap tomorrow after lunch. I'll make
a day of it. I'm okay with it as long
as you are. You might have to carry me for
the final hour. You cool with that. Yeah, No, that's
because that's what all your teammates would say to in
In in the NFL, hey orin Burger is good for
the first three quarters, but that fourth quarter he's exhausted. Man.

(01:27):
We just got to carry him all the way through.
So I'm okay with I'm okay, We're doing it very good,
very good. But definitely that the nap is the nap
is the key. The nap is absolutely the key, because
there's times when I have that short turnaround too. If
I if I'm filling in the morning and I'll get
done at eleven, and I can't I just can't go
right to bed, like I need a little bit of
time to decompress and come down from the show and
everything else. And I'm like, okay, that that alarm goes

(01:48):
off and I'm going, oh wow, I'm not twenty five anymore.
I am not that that this is very, very difficult,
which is why I'm so glad. In my forties, I
discovered coffee that was that that that was the biggest thing.
That's the biggest addition to my life in the last
few years has been coffee. Good lord, what took you
so long? Welcome to that. I think I've been drinking
a pot of days and since I'm eleven years old,

(02:10):
like you know, like basically at the upbringing of a longshoreman,
like I just here's here's here's a pack of Marlborough
Red and some regular. Uh, it's right there next to
the decaf. You just enjoy that, kid, you know. I
never did. I just never and I just never had
a taste for coffee. I was like, okay, no, I

(02:31):
was have a big diet soda drinking, right. I drink
diet coke and diapepsi everything else. But like somewhere in
my early to mid forties, I was like, I'm gonna
try coffee. And then I go, oh my god, this
is the greatest thing ever. After like three SIPs, I'm
a different person. This is out this is outstanding, and
I feel like, can I actually get a coffee machine

(02:51):
that I could put like next to my bed so
I can just wake up in the more, I just
reach right over and turn it on to go, I
have a cup of coffee before I feet hit the floor.
That's I'm not kidding. You can look it up. They
make them now where you can set up your coffee
pop bedside and the the it'll brew a cup of
coffee and then as soon as it's finished brewing, the
alarm will go off. It'll time for it'll time itself

(03:13):
for whatever whatever time you want to wake up at.
I haven't gone that far yet, but I have considered
it many times. Wow, you would even need your snooze
at that point. Well, I got coffees ready, I'll get up.
I don't need to go back to sleep. Coffee is ready,
I'll just get up start drinking coffee. Yeah, there you go.
That's I wish I had an idea for that. That
would have been awesome. Uh. Big night in the NBA tonight.

(03:35):
You heard Brian Fenley mentioned a couple of seconds ago.
Right now at halftime matchup of the best in the
East and the best in the West, and my goodness,
these Celtics are blowing the doors off of the Sun's
right now. Sixty nine to forty two. They shoot fifty
from the floor in the first half. Jalen Brown and
double figures, so is Jayson Tatum. Meanwhile, for the Sons,

(03:57):
Devin Booker just three out of ten from floor. Uh.
The Suns are getting absolutely demolished. And you know to
think what we've seen so far in the NBA rich
because we're getting to the the third poll. I guess
you would say we're about a third of the way
through the season. And there's a clear difference in the
Eastern Conference in the Western Conference because you look at

(04:19):
the teams at the top of the East and the Celtics,
they look like they are heading shoulders. They in the
Bucks are We're heading shoulders above everybody else? And the
teams in the West. You sit there and go, okay, yeah,
that's nice. Are they cannibalizing each other? Are they beating
each other? But you see a game like this and
you go, oh, man. The Celtics they learned a lot
from that NBA Finals meltdown they had against the Suns.

(04:40):
They learned a lot. They came into this season ready
to go because sometimes teams go the other way. Man,
we made it all the way back there. It's gonna
be tough. We're gonna start out slow. Nope, the Celtics
with a big coaching change. Maybe Emayo Doka is not
a great coach after all, because here there are out
twenty and five and they're crushing the Sun's tonight. Yeah
you know. I mean they're they're just why being the

(05:00):
floor with a different somebody every single time? Uh they
they get to the offensive side. It's really interesting. The Celtics,
I mean to put it like bluntly, they're really really,
really good. But are they closers? We'll find out. I look,
it's very difficult to have success, and I mean ultimate

(05:23):
success where you're winning championships and to sustain it. I mean,
ask any team who's ever done it. It's not like
it gets easier every year because the target only gets
bigger and bigger and bigger. And that's part of the
story tonight is these teams, there's there's obviously vengeance on
the minds of one side, and and we're sort of
seeing that being carried out. The one thing I try

(05:45):
to do every single basketball season is I try to
look at trends and I not try. I try not
to fall victim to just watching one game and making
bold proclamations about everything I've seen. Because we know the
unofficial start date of the NBA season is Christmas Day.
Now that's been since overtaken by the NFL now horning
in on the NBA's territory by putting games on But um,

(06:09):
but I look at it that way, I really do,
I I say to myself, Okay, the Celtics obviously are
trending towards being a great team this year. The Bucks
are trending towards being a great team this year. The
Sun's they have a really decent record coming out of
the West. But I'm not going to just trust a
one game performance. It's too early in the season to
get all hot and bothered about it. But but you

(06:30):
can say with some certainty, based on the roster they
have now and based on the way they're playing, the
Boston Celtics are really really good. Yeah, that they have
really taken off of last year, all the controversy, have
been able to just hit the ground running. It's been
an amazing run for them. And you know you talk
about amazing, is that if the Suns lose this game, right,

(06:51):
because we're used to seeing the Suns the top of
the Western Conference the better part of the last three years, right,
all Right, the Sons lose. Yes, it's one game, it's
one night, and it's okay if they lose tonight. The
Pelicans are in first place in the West. And I
gotta tell you, when we made our preseason predictions for
the NBA, i'mout being honest with you. I said Celtics

(07:11):
and the Calves in the East, because I love the
changes the Calves made. They were close to being great anyway.
They added Donovan Mitchell, so Celtics cas I loved. And
in the West, I said, you know who, I really
like Memphis and then I hemmed an I haud because Memphis.
I love John Moran. This is the year he becomes
the best player in the NBA. And and everybody just
understands that it's John Moran's league. But in in going

(07:35):
back and forth, I said, you know, I really like
what the Nuggets are gonna do. They get Jamal Murray back.
You know, they get a couple of players back if
I had the guts. But I didn't have the guts
to pick the Pelicans to make it to the Western
Conference Broms, because I just can't. I just can't trust
that Zion Williamson is gonna be healthy. Right He's been
healthy so far, and that's great, right because the Pelicans

(07:56):
have proven even couple of games he has missed, they're
okay with that, and really, okay, are you really gonna
be good long haul without Zion Williamson. It's all been
about his health and and I'm still hesitant now. I
feel worse because they're they're winning and he's healthy, But
is he gonna stay healthy? I still right now I
can't say, Hey, everything is going well, he's been healthy,
he looks great. Is he gonna play? Is he gonna

(08:18):
make it forty games? Fifty five games? When is he
gonna get hurt? I just couldn't do it, And and
I feel bad every day that goes on the Pelicans win,
that they didn't have the sack to say Pelicans and
the and the Grizzlies and its jaw and it's Zion
is the next Magic Larry rivalry in the NBA. But
I just couldn't trust that Zion was gonna stay healthy.
Even though things look so great right now, I go,

(08:40):
is he really gonna be there at the end? Is
he he hasn't played basketball at all? He's gotten hurt
every year he's played the last four years of his career,
going high school all the way to the NBA. I
just can't trust he's gonna be there when they need
him and he's gonna be healthy. That's the toughest part
for me. Yeah, but your eyes aren't deceiving you. I mean,
let's just think about since Kyrie or excuse me, not

(09:00):
Kyrie Irving Kawhi Leonard Uh started getting hurt in the
NBA with the quadriceps tendonopathy when he was still a
spur done a real thing. I gotta look at up tendonopathy.
I think you made that word up. I promise I
I I you know what I did, stay on a
holiday in so I I've earned my medical doctor ship.
It's it's a long, advanced, u thorough uh planned course

(09:25):
that I go through once a ye, yeah, No, it
is the word. It is a word that I'm pretty
sure he was he was struggling with. But the deal
is the point I'm trying to make is he goes,
he goes hurt year, hurt year, hurt year, goes to Toronto,
win's a championship. Hurt your hurt year. You know, It's
it's it's just what happens like when the body starts

(09:47):
accumulating injuries. It's not like all of a sudden you
just snap out of it and you go, well, now
I'm just not gonna get injured anymore. It's it's a
cascading effect. I mean, there are occasions with and exceptions,
and I know Zion Williams as an exceptional athlete, but
with exceptions where you have a guy who can overcome

(10:08):
some early injury situations in his career and go on
to have a relatively healthy career, I don't know. I
mean I even watching him tonight. He had this crazy
you know, steal or or sort of batted ball rebound
and then he passed it at to outlet and then
he catches the alley oopen jams it and you just
look at his size, and I mean, he's a freak athlete,

(10:31):
and he can elevate and he can run well for
his size and all those things. But you look at
his size, you look at his frame, and you just say,
can those ankles handle that weight for for for an
entirety of a season. We haven't seen it yet, So
I'm with you. I I want, I want, I wish
that I could throw in and be like the Zion

(10:52):
Williams fandom leader. But I just can't. I can't. I
love how he plays the game. I think that he's
a star when he's available, but it just hasn't been
available enough to really sit there and say, well, the Pelicans,
if he stays healthy, of their champions because that's a
huge if. Yeah, And and that's the that's the thing,
is that that's the only thing that's holding him back,

(11:12):
is that is his body going to be able to
withstand the rigors of the NBA because he also far.
You know, look, you play a lot of a au
ball growing up, and you're traveling a lot, and you're playing,
you know, three four games in a weekend sometimes, but
you're you're young, and you're bouncing back, and your bouncing back.
Then you get into college, you play a thirty five
game regular season. You're training in the off season, okay,

(11:34):
and then you get to the n b A and
you know, NBA is a man's game, and it's it's
back to backs, and it's it's a lot of travel,
and it's eighty two games and then it's the marathon
of the playoffs that you earn a championship in the NBA.
More than any other sport, because you can't just get
hot and win a couple of games. With the championship,
there's too many rounds of playoffs, there's too many good

(11:54):
teams to play and and that's what I look at
and go is a guy who's who's already twenty two
years old, and he's two hundred eighty five pounds at least,
which would make him the second heaviest guy in the
NBA right now. Is that something that he's going to
be able to keep down and he's going to be
able to keep that as as something he can deal
with as he gets older, as he gets bigger, because

(12:16):
so far we haven't been able to see it. And
it's not it's not to the point where you hold
your breath every time he goes out and plays, kind
of kind of like like when Clayton Kers shore Jacob
deGrom pitch, you know, you'd be like, oh my god,
I gotta hold my breath. Is you're gonna be healthy
at the end of this Now, as a met fan,
I have to worry about that anymore because he's a
picture for the Rangers. I got gotta I gotta worry about.
Verlander insures are now so. But for Zion, it's like, oh,
but you know, Kenny do it, Kenny Steak, and you

(12:38):
keep seeing these highlights. In the back of your mind
is always how can he keep this up? Man? I
hope he can, because boy is he exciting and he
is absolutely bleep and unstoppable. He's gonna lead the league
in field goal percentage every year he plays. But that's
just out there. It's really hard because I really wanted
to believe in the Pelicans, and here they are. They
made the trade for Anthony Davis and worked out for
the Lakers. Now it's working out more for them. But

(13:00):
if I could trust that Zion was healthy, who you're
looking at the team that is that is going to
be a Western Conference power for the next decade. Not
not just a team that, hey, they're gonna be in
it every year. It's gonna be a team that is
one of the two favorites every single year going in.
Like like we talked about the Warriors the past seven
eight years. While you gotta get buy the Warriors, gotta
get buy the Warriors now they're getting old. It would
be if you could guarantee me Zion would stay healthy

(13:23):
or have a or have a better than even chance
of staying healthy and say, yeah, they're your favorites for
the next decade plus on the Western Conference. Yeah, listen,
I I all of these are merited, uh concerns about
the Pelicans. I mean this is based in fact, it's
based in history, reason history with Zim Williamson. But you
made a couple of good comparisons to baseball with the

(13:45):
Graham and Kershaw. You know, you take it to basketball
in other places, like a d out in l A.
You know, when the Anthony Davis is on the court,
the Lakers look like world beaters. When he's not playing healthy,
they look very ordinary. Even with lebre On James, it
just doesn't look like a team that has a real
chance to make a deep run in the postseason in
the NFL. I mean, look, we have a wealth of

(14:07):
knowledge about Kirk Kirk Cousins. He's having an excellent season.
Now this is even injury base This is just talking
about the player he is or has been throughout the
course of his career. Or Jared Goff. Like Jared Goff
is having an incredible season for the Lions this season.
Can we trust it? I don't know. I don't think

(14:27):
so because what's the proof that we can look. Zion
has an insane amount to prove. If his goal is
to net his franchise a championship, at some point, he
has to prove that he can stay healthy first and foremost.
I mean that is really the end of the statement.
I think that they need to do a nice job
of finding ways to you know, manage his his his

(14:50):
body and how much work he receives that practice, you know,
making sure that he's getting the appropriate amount of work
at practice, but not overdoing it, you know, when they're traveling.
I mean as much just I hate load management, you know,
making sure that he's going to have a couple of
nights off as he's still getting his body back together
for the first time really since his NBA career started.

(15:10):
All those things are gonna be insanely important. But the
fact that you don't trust it is not shocking because
I don't think anybody should or can trust that Zion
Williamson can lead his team to a championship until we
can trust that he can stay healthy. Twitter at how

I'm surprised. I am shocked. I couldn't believe he stayed
nine years, three hundred and sixty million dollars. Did the

(17:43):
Yankees spend their money wisely? Getting set to join us
on the hotline right now. MLB Network insider extraordinaire John
Paul Morossy. You can follow him on Twitter at John Morosy,
that is at John Morrossy JP. Spending most of his
time rich right now, just so you know, uh, covering
Major League Baseball, where you helped break the Judge news today,

(18:03):
and making sure that Michigan is prepared for their game
against TCU coming up in the college football playoff. That's
a John. He spends half his day on baseball, the
other half on Michigan football. What's up? JP? Doing great? Guys?
What an awesome time a year, by the way it is,
And we've got the World Cup going on, which of
course we've been following so closely and really enjoyed watching

(18:26):
t USA. I think we're gonna be even better when
we're hosting the World Cup in four years time. And yes,
Michigan and the college football semifinal. I like the Wolverines
chances against TCU in the Semis, perhaps less so if
they encounter the Bulldogs in the final. But maybe, just
maybe Ohio State will help Michigan for a change. You

(18:50):
all right, all let me ask you this. Okay, let
me ask the JP. I can I can wave a
magic wand and I can say, you can break the
next ten biggest stories in baseball. You are the one
to break all ten stories, right, whatever they're going to be.
Carlos Corea or whatever. You can break the next ten
big stories in Major League Baseball, or Michigan beats TCU.

(19:13):
What do you pick? Man? Uh? I would you want
my honest answer on that one. My my honest answer
is I would rather. I would rather break the stories,
because that's really I mean, like, I'll be just totally honest,
Like university is wonderful, incredible. I hope they win the

(19:34):
whole thing. But but at the end of the day, uh,
you got you gotta pay the bills, right, And that's
that's how I look at it. And I have a
lot of Uh. I just have a lot of respect
for the people in in the professional that I have
here in in covering baseball, and so many great ones,
and obviously a lot of these meetings you're you're chasing

(19:55):
what what Jeff Passon was reporting or Ken Rosenthal. So
for me, like, I just have so much back for
those guys. So I will say I I will divide
my my mentality there and say you've you've got to
go with with what's right in front of you, your purview,
and then control, as they say, control of the control
will So it's it's a really interesting thought exercise. But
I would say breaking the story is more important to me. Yeah, Yeah,

(20:18):
there's no doubt about that. Speaking of a breaking story,
we saw Aaron Judge get broke off nine years, three
sixty million dollars. He'll be a Yankee until he's almost forty.
Did they make the right decision with the length of
the contract, with the amount of money they spent on
Judge Rich I believe they did, and and here's here's why.

(20:39):
And I realized it's it's hard to it's it's hard
to have clarity of thought as how it's gonna look
eight nine years down the road. But the reality is this.
You are coming off of an ALCS in which you
got swept, and Judge is coming off a season in
which he set the all time single season record in

(21:00):
the American League. And at the end of the day,
this is not this is this is not a manufacturing
company that is trying to do a cost benefit analysis.
And if we can make this part cheaper, we have
to do ext y and Z. This is still entertainment
and sports with an element of show business to it.
And and your fans, who are your customers, want him

(21:23):
on the team. And in irony of ironies, the season
opening game for the Yankees is at home against the Giants.
Can you imagine? Can you imagine what the response would
have been from the Yankee fans if Judge had shown
up to that game wearing a gray number uniform of

(21:47):
the San Francisco Giants. It just it is difficult to
even conceive what the fan response would be. And that
to me rich, especially in this sport. I want to
make this clear. This is different. Baseball is still different
than the NHL, in the NFL and the NBA. We
have no salary cap here and there is there is

(22:08):
no owner in this sports who would view a difference
of a conversation of let's say, okay, I can either
spend forty million dollars on Er and Judge, or I'm
gonna buy forty million dollars worth of of middle relievers.
That's just not how it works. There is not all
money in this sport is created equal. And when you've

(22:30):
got a superstar who can who can potentially go to
Hall of Fame and be a legend with his number
of monument park and a sea on his jersey, you
just have to handle it differently. And the Yankees handle
it differently. Do I expect them to get dollar per
dollar every single r O I on every dollar they
spend on him in the ninth year of the deal. No,

(22:51):
But that's not the point. That's not why you signed
this deal. You signed this deal because he's an essential
part of your history and an essential part of the
product that you hope your fans will be coming to
watch for the next nine years. J P helped me
out with this because this is this is the part
I'm having the biggest difficulty with. Is that for the
for the long this entire time, I thought he's gone.

(23:12):
It's a frosty relationship with the front office. He's never
made it seem like he was happy with how things
were going. He was upset that the initial offer in
the spring was leaked. He was upset that Randy Levine said,
Aaron's got a decision to make. Uh, And he told
Time Magazine when he was the Athlete of the Year,
I felt the front office tried to turn the fans

(23:32):
against me. And then he turns around and signed to
the Yankees, I, I really want to come to grips
with that, because all of this says I don't like you,
I don't like you. I'm leaving. And then he turned
around and signed, m that's that's very fair. Um. What
I would say, though, is whatever was said never was
said publicly. Whatever was being talked about from all of

(23:54):
us who were trying to divine his intentions and read
the tea leaves and all those things, the internal relationship
never soured to the point where pride got in the way.
And there was the conversation Brian Cashman had referenced and
referred to how Steinbrenner as the closer the Mariano Rivera

(24:14):
of the negotiations, and that means that that whatever was
going on, whatever business negotiation or disagreement might have happened,
that the two principles, the owner and the Superstar were
able to sit down and arrither an understanding, and I
think that is really important. I praised them for for

(24:37):
avoiding what clearly happened with Freddie Freeman and the Braves,
where that negotiation got emotional, clearly got emotional, and this
one did not. And I think that while there are
always competing interests, and certainly there are emotions in every negotiation,
the most successful ones that I've been aware of in

(24:58):
sports are ones that are not emotional in their in
their real identity. And I think that this was, at
its core, I think a really even and reasonable discussion
about an astronomical figure, no, no doubt, but it was
I think a very reasonable way to to arrive at
a contract that sets the standard. It's, by the way,

(25:19):
it's great news for the sport. Every free agent is
gonna be out there and say, wow, the teams are spending.
This is great for the business, great for the industry.
At this time last year we were locked out and
now we're not, which is just a it's a great
feeling to have everybody back at the winter meetings again.
And and my goodness, Aaron Judge gets the contract that
he earned, that he deserved I really believe that it doesn't.

(25:41):
It doesn't have to be the perfect contract dollar for
dollar r o I for it to be the right contract,
And I believe this was the right contract for the
right guy at the right place. JP. The Red Sox
have had a busy offseason already, Sander Bogart's opts out
of his contract. He's a free each and can we
Jansen signs on a two year deal. UM d see

(26:04):
a destination a landing spot for Bogarts. Yet, you know, Rich,
it's a great question. I'm glad you asked it because
to me, he needs to be a member of the
Boston Red Sox. He needs to stay where that UM
if the money is right. Obviously, the Red Sox have
invested about ninety million dollars in Massa Taka Yoshida, who
has to be who has a chance to be a

(26:25):
really good player. But he's not Sander Bogarts. He's not
the heart and soul of your team, who's been there
for two World championships and has been at the center
of everything that you've done. Um is a total pro
already in the clubhouse at his presence. Bogarts has already
done all of those things, and I just think that
he is way too important for them to potentially compromise

(26:50):
their ability to sign him. Again, I think Yoshida is
a great signing and a great addition. But if if
they end up signing him and not Bogarts, I have
a hard time imagining how they're a better team on
opening day than they were when the season ended. Went
by the way, they weren't good enough, they were out
of the playoffs, So Bogarts for me, if the Red

(27:12):
Sox are able to to find their way here in
these negotiations, they need to step up and sign him,
because if they don't, he could easily become a cub.
He could easily become even still a Cardinal. He could
become a Giant, or a Dodger or a Padre. There's
enough teams out there that are willing to spend that
a team like the Red Sox has to get wise

(27:34):
about what the going rate is and and step up
and sign someone who's been a key part of the
organization for more than a decade. All Right, j P
lastly complete the sentence for me here, because now that
we see are and Judge go, the next big Domino
could be Bogarts could be Carlos Correa. We know the
Dodgers not pursuing him, likely because their fan base is

(27:54):
still really up in arms about the scandal. So complete
the sentence for me. When it's all said and done,
Carlos Correa is playing baseball where San Francisco, California. He's
gonna be a Giant. I believe that's my opinion. I'm
not reporting that. That's my opinion. I think that there
is there is a tremendous appetite for for the Giants

(28:17):
to add a superstar, and Correa is that superstar personality.
Wants the big, big stage, loves the big stage. And
he just saw someone who succeeded him in Houston get
all the adulation of the World Series, the World Series MVP,
Jeremy Pania. Carlos Correa wants to go somewhere where you

(28:38):
can make a statement. And and my goodness, you think
about rivalry and intensity and personality. You put Carlos Correa
in a Giant uniform at Dodger Stadium, My goodness, that's
gonna be some fun baseball to watch. You might you know,
at that point you're probably talking about the most polarizing

(28:58):
giant to walk in that stadium is Verry Bonds in
terms of just the way that he'd be treated by
the Dodger fans. So um, that would be interesting theater,
and I'm sure Carlos is aware of that. I also
think that, and I saw the report about the Dodgers
not pursuing him. I think that they may be wary
of his, of of the past and of the Astros

(29:20):
in teen, But I believe the Dodgers are are too
smart and too aggressive of a franchise to categorically rule
him out because of how they think their fans might feel.
You know, his first his first three homework game for
the Dodgers in April would probably go a long way
towards eliminating those feelings, or at least reducing them to

(29:42):
a manageable point. And at the end of the day,
it's about winning in the night and things in front
of you. And if the Dodgers feel is no cre
it can help uh, they will probably pursue him. But
I still believe the Giants there are rivals, are the team,
the Lands and and my goodness, what what fun are
we going to have? That's the case JP the San
Diego Padres were in Entre Turner, apparently offering him a

(30:04):
deal that would make him the highest paid shortstop in
Major League Baseball. Uh, he didn't want to stay in
southern California, so he's a Philly now. Aaron Judge, it
was down to the night before signing with the Yankees,
Judge was in San Diego. It just appears that the
Padres are major players in this free agency market. So

(30:24):
where do they pivot now? In your opinion, like, how
do they make their team better? Given how much money
it appears they're willing to spend this offseason. There's a
great question. I think for me the Padres, they could
go in any number of different directions. I think a
j their GM as you well know rich from your
time in this great city. He's uh, he's always very aggressive.

(30:46):
He always wants to to seek the next superstar. And
so I I think that they will have a conversation
about Xander Bogart. I don't think Bogart's wants to play
uh third base yet. I do think if you're gonna
bring him in, you got to play shortstop for the Podreis,
and then you move Kim to second and Crony the first,
and you've got Manny playing third, and Tatis becomes an outdider.

(31:08):
I mean that's and to be honest with you, Rich
and you know this, there's been a conversation about Tatis
playing the outfield even before the suspension occurred this year
and the injuries. And so if you want to just
eliminate all doubt and say, all right, Fernando, how we
got boguards to play to play second? The place the
play short stop you you just have to play the

(31:28):
outdold down. Do we have the end of boguards? There's
nothing you can really say. He's just spend it now anyway.
So there's there's no rule that you get your job
back at your same spot when when your suspension is over.
So I think bo guards to the padres would make
a un of sense. And it's one of the many
scenarios still in front of us. Here as the winner
meeting Straggle calls he's on Twitter at John MORROSSI, that

(31:50):
is at John MORROSSI asked him any of your baseball
questions or what the Michigan offense should do to try
to come back t see you in the college football
play sent me from they got to run the football
and then there's Bill Blake corm to do that. So uh,
Donovan Edwards, that has to be great. And uh, I
I do think though McCarthy just makes plays that we

(32:12):
have not seen made by a Michigan quarterback in a
long time. So uh, he has to be the difference
maker and I believe it will be there. It is
auditioning for college football. Richie's auditioning to be on college
football on the weekends. Oh, I know, yeah, JP could
do that as well, me and him. We need a
co host a natural rivalry show with my Nitney Lions
and his Wolverines. Will just will be at odds the

(32:35):
entire time. But that would be a ton of fun. JP. Yeah,
I would. I would love that. And that's it's And
by the way, rich you know one of these years, uh,
and that's coming up next year. By the way, when
Michigan played that Fenn State, that's what I'm asking for.
The Orne Burger seats about twenty rows up on the
fifty when Michigan play in the State College. That's right.

(32:56):
I said, I'll show up to the to the runt door.
Beaver sty't even say. Rich Or Burger told me to
show up here and ask for the tickets that are
left in his name. It's crazy, That's what I'm to do.
I'm still waiting for those fifty yard tickets as well,
so I'll let you know as soon as I know.

(33:17):
I want the Berg I'm sorry, the fifty yard line
Ornberger seats who Richberger? Let me let me write to that.
Does he work here? Is he? Is? He? Is he? In?
Pr is he Ornberg? I'm sorry, I don't, I don't
have that name. Always a great visit with j P.
And yeah, we'll get into that Dodgers Carlos care because
that's a really fascinating topic. But first, Brian Finley has

(33:39):
What's trending in the wide world of sports by Yes,
Jason and Rich. There is one game going on in
the Association right now and the Celtics are taking it
to the Sun's Phoenix hardly trying here. It's one hundred
to sixty one oneing in the third quarter. This is
one of the Marquis primetime games, guys, and assuming that

(34:00):
Phoenix loses, and again you can never count it out
until it's actually over. But if they do go on
to lose, then that means the New Orleans Pelicans will
be the top team in the Western Conference. First there,
and they helped their cause to the Pells whether one
of four to ninety eight. Win tonight against the Pistons
where Zion Williamson put on his show with his twenty

(34:20):
nine points and ten rebounds. Crazy finish in Salt Lake City,
where Utah goes on to win one twenty four to
one twenty three. Golden State was up two points, they
were up twenty three to excuse me yet one three
to two, so by one point had the basketball inbounding
and then they with six point nine seconds to go,

(34:41):
they turn it over, leads to a fast break. Utah
scores at the horn with a dunk and they go
on to win this thing one to one. Three Janas
and to Cooper thirty five points for the Bucks as
they devoured the Kings one third to one thirteen. The
Grizzlies top of the thunder one twenty three to one
oh two as John Moran had a triple double. That's

(35:02):
his sixth career triple double. The Lakers fall flight against
the Raptors to one twenty or one thirteen. They were
playing with that Anthony Davis and Lebron James and guys
one or two notable scores in college basketball. Per Due
stays perfect at nine and know after they shot away
Hofster eighty five to sixties six and number five Yukon

(35:25):
dismantling Florida seventy five to fifty four, the Huskies are
oute to ten and oh the last time they went
tenantot to start a season, they won the national championship.
Something to keep your eyes on as the season goes on.

(37:43):
The Jason Smiths Show with Rich Orin Burger and for
Mike Harmon thanks to John Paul Morossi stopped by a
few minutes ago Talk Baseball with Us, Aaron Judge and more.
And today it was another day where we got an
update on the forty nine quarterback situation and it's just
starting to get ridiculous. Jimmy Garoppolo avoid a Liz Frank injury,

(38:04):
could come back within seven or eight weeks. That was
the story on Monday. Okay, that's great, Oh so is
he coming back? Well, we don't know, but he could
come back in the playoffs and take over. Kyle Shanahan
had to say today, now is Wednesday, Hey, Jimmy Garoppolo
coming back, uh for for this year, there is a
it's a way outside chance for Garoppolo to return at

(38:26):
some point. And Rich I keep coming back to this man. Yes,
I get it with Kyle Shannon because you need to
stick with if you're into the playoffs and Brock Purdy
is playing well, and let's face it, you're in the playoffs.
If Brock Purdy plays well, are you really gonna change
to go back to Jimmy Garoppolo. It's not like it's
Tom Brady, your Patrick Mahomes coming off the injured list.

(38:46):
If you're playing well, and the the Niners are kind
of quarterback proof in that they're so loaded everywhere that
you know, just don't screw it up, and in the
offense and the defense everything, they're gonna win games for
you with all the playmakers they have. I don't think
there's any chance we see Jimmy Garoppolo again later on
this year. Yeah, I mean, as long as it's the
Brock party that we saw against the Dolphins, you know,

(39:09):
completing almost seventy of his passes, throwing two touchdowns. So
he did throw that pick, but but you know what
I mean, like he has to play up to snuff
in order for them to not have that consideration. And frankly,
he probably needs to play that way in order for
them to make the postseason. Anyways, But to your point,
if he's rolling for two reasons, I don't think we'll

(39:31):
see Jimmy. Hey, it's probably not what's best for the
team at that point. And be I don't even know
if Jimmy Garoppolo necessarily wants to take that risk. So
he injures his foot, he doesn't need surgery, he comes
back from that, he goes into a game in the postseason,
maybe he wins one, maybe he gets hurt again. I mean,

(39:52):
that would put him right back at square one where
free agency was so difficult or trade was so difficult
for Jimmy Garoppolo because he and injured his throwing shoulder
and nobody trusted whether or not you know, he could
toss around the pigskin anymore. So I think for Jimmy's
future I'm talking about selfishly, he probably would be just

(40:12):
satisfied if he coasted in behind the scenes, got himself
healthy this offseason. For this offseason, while Brock Purdy out
went out there and one as many games as he
can possibly win for the forty Niners at this point. Yeah,
I look at this. I expect Brock Purdy to be
the starting quarterback in the NFC Championship game because the

(40:33):
Niners are so loaded and they're gonna be able by
the end of the season when they really get it
all clicking, because they've had so many different pieces they've
had to uh get in in the beginning. Okay, Trey
Lance the quarterback, Nope, he's out. Let's get Jimmy Garoppolo going. Okay, nope,
Now we gotta worry about getting Christian McCaffrey and Okay, great,
now deebo is hurt. Okay, wait, now Jimmy Garoppolos are

(40:54):
By the end of the year, they're gonna be rolling.
This is the most talented team outside of quarterback in
the NFL, and and as long as Purdy is just
a little bit better than Cooper Rush, you know, just
a little bit more dynamic, Rich, I think they're gonna
win the vast majority of the rest of their games
to get to the NFC Championship. Yeah. You make a
really strong point there. We saw this in Dallas. Doc
went down. They didn't really skip a beat, and that
was because Cooper Rush just didn't play outside of himself.

(41:17):
And with this offense, that's all you need to do
if your brock party just don't play outside of yourself
this just don't try to make the big play all
the time, and you're gonna be just fine, you know,
because there's so much talent around you on that offense.
I completely agree. We got more NFL on the way
Jason Smith, rich Oreinberger, plus a big preview with Thursday
Night Football coming up next to the tire Ract dot
