Speaker 3 (00:29):
Greetings, Welcome back in hour three of the program. Curizing

Smith off tonight, which means we get doctor rich.

Speaker 4 (00:40):
In on the show.

Speaker 3 (00:41):

questions about it. We appreciate him being with us here.
In mornings down in San Diego, you're in part of
the San Diego State Football broadcast First Place San Diego
State ASTAX right now getting after it six years in

(01:01):
the National Football League, and then every Saturday morning part
of the Countdown to kick Off presented by bet MGM
show here.

Speaker 4 (01:07):
Getting you ready for the college Day?

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Did I get all of your accolades and accomplishments in
anything else you want to put out? Master of the
Grill or something like that.

Speaker 5 (01:19):
You really nailed it.

Speaker 6 (01:22):
My eyes glaze over anytime anybody's giving me an intro
longer than just a guy, or you could even shorten
it to Jack.

Speaker 5 (01:30):
That's fine.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
There you go sing with the guy in the place.
It's my guy, Rich Hornberger, no question about it. He's
here with us for another two hours, Love him or not.
We're gonna go out to the hotline now. Time dude
check in on what's going on here in Los Angeles.
The Jazz and the Lakers getting after it. So we
bring on NBA Insider, our guy, Mark Medina, who's on

(01:53):
the scene covering it all, joins us each and every
week on the program during the NBA season.

Speaker 4 (01:58):
Mark, Welcome in at Mark g underscore.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
Medina, what did you think of the first half Lebron
james reintroduction to society?

Speaker 7 (02:07):
Well, it was very underwhelming. I felt like you're seeing
a superstar all of a sudden, play like a role
player that makes the right play most of the time
on offense but can't really defend. But I guess that's
what you would expect for someone who's four years old
and hasn't played for fourteen games and is very noticeably
tired every time he stepped on the floor.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, he did talk about having the lungs of a baby.

Speaker 7 (02:30):
Yeah, I think he still does. You know what was
fascinating when the Lakers honored him and then shouting him
out that he is the first player in NBA history
to play twenty three seasons. He looked up at the
scoreboard and was smiling Lacklin teammates. But he seems so
tired to even muster much of a reaction beyond that,

(02:52):
so I thought it was pretty fitting.

Speaker 6 (02:55):
Yeah, you know, there's actually, I mean there's a tinge
of in my heart seeing Lebron when he comes down
to earth and he's immortal just like the rest of us,
because I mean twenty I mean, if you think about
twenty three seasons, Mark, and I know you've covered this
league for a very long time, I mean, that's the
majority of my life where Lebron James dominance over the

(03:19):
league has lasted. I feel like there's a lot of
people who get tired with greatness, but I don't think
they realize what they're going to be missing when it's
all finally said and done.

Speaker 5 (03:31):
I mean, is there a way.

Speaker 6 (03:32):
To quantify in any way using words alone, what Lebron
James has meant to this league or even even the
franchise's playing for right now.

Speaker 7 (03:43):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's literally unprecedented. There is
no other player. Sorry, I thought I got disconnected. I
was saying, there's no other player in the history of
the NBA that's ever played twenty three NBA seasons, and
he is complaining and all Star caliber level every single season.
And we clearly see he's not the same player as
he was ten years ago, but it's still enough to

(04:05):
be all NBA consideration every season. I think what's fast
saying lead into his return. I talked with different outside
doctors for peace for essentially Sports Today unpacked two seemingly
contradictory things. They said, you know, short term, he's going
to deal with a lot of issues with conditioning, minutes restriction,
getting his timing out. But in the same breath, when

(04:28):
I asked them where they rank this accomplishment of the
longevity and plant all Star caliber level for twenty three years,
they all said that they thought that this is the
best individual accomplishment in all of sports. Now, that's not
to say that that means he's the goat or anything. Else.
But when it comes to longevity and consistently playing at

(04:49):
a high level, no one's done it better than Lebron James.
So you know, I think we have to keep that
in mind as we see, you know, the ups and
downs of what could be his finals.

Speaker 3 (05:00):
Means we all need to get on board that seven
figure spenditure on our bodies to keep us going in.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
The market is really what that does.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
Or become part cyborg as perhaps we've surmised Lebron has
been low these many years. But one of my considerations
Rich and I talking about it in the pregame, was
just that concern of the reintegration and what it meant
for the secondary players where they're minutes and touches and
shots would be off and how quickly they would rebound

(05:32):
by Lebron's return.

Speaker 7 (05:34):
Yeah, well, so far well hanging through Bronnie James is
now not playing anymore. Same thing with Golling connect But
that's not surprising. But what has been I want to
say surprising but notable, is that Jared Vanderbilt so far
as in the rotation, neither is their new rookie. I
do zero, So no doubt it's a domino effect, right,

(05:55):
now they've been playing nine players steep, but that's going
to be some to change. And you know, when I
asked jj Redd, I got practiced yesterday. You know, to
what extent does he just view this as plug and
play Because it's Lebron James versus this is going to
be a long integration process. He mentioned the domino effect
that Lebron's going to play around thirty four to thirty

(06:17):
five minutes a night, and that means that that takes
away minutes from a bunch of other players. And so
how do they find that happy medium? You know, Lebron
maintained me saying, Hey, I'm a ballplayer. I can fit
in anywhere. He's certainly shown the body of work that
he can adjust as a score facilitator, mix of both.
But how does the rest of the team adapt to him?

(06:40):
The low hanging fruit obviously is and most importantly is
Luka Dacic and Austin Reeves. But you know, the Lakers
wanted to have some semblance of roster death to address
last season's early playoff X in the first round against Minnesota.
And when you're integrating a star of Lebron James, is
that sure? Here it's going to really test how much

(07:04):
stepth do they actually have.

Speaker 6 (07:07):
No question about it? Mark Medina joining us. You know,
I look at Lebron James as really being the final say,
but this is from an outsider's vantage point looking in.
I mean, clearly he was responsible in some part for
JJ Reddick's higher with the Lakers. I mean clearly him
playing with his son was more his decision than anybody

(07:29):
else is in the franchise's decision. So I mean, how
much do you think Lebron really has to say over
rotation and how many minutes are played by role players
and depth players and you know, substitutions even like how
how into the minutia does his control go.

Speaker 7 (07:50):
I think when you look at the big picture with
Lebron and his involvement with the Lakers and his influence,
he often drives the car, but he doesn't manage the
end or have the keys. So I think, what's going
to happen here as a pertains to who's calling the shots?
I think from an availability standpoint, a minute standpoint, I

(08:11):
think that the Lakers will defer to Lebron his personal
trainer Mike Mancy, as well as the training staff. But
as far as what his role is going to be,
I think frankly that will be up to JJ Reddick
in the front office. And the reason why is because
Luka Dancic is there. If Luca wasn't there, Lebron would
have more influence, but that's not the case. I talked

(08:32):
with him, uh, you know, opposing assistant coach the other
day about all this, and he said, you know, the
reality with the fact that he's on the final year
of his contract, when Luca's on the team, he doesn't
have the same power as he once did throughout his career,
and so I think from an availability standpoint again minutes,
it will be mostly Lebron and his trainers calling the shots.

(08:54):
But as far as what his role will be, I
think it's going to be largely organizational. And they've made
it clear that the team starts with Luca and they'll
build around him accordingly.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
On the spectrum.

Speaker 3 (09:06):
They just had a pretty cool graphic mark that went
up eighty two players were born after Lebron's debut on
Oshober twenty nine and two thousand and three.

Speaker 7 (09:16):
That's wild. I mean, if you do the math, I
think there's like four hundred plus players in the league
like that's the most a fourth of the NBA that
was born after Lebron.

Speaker 3 (09:23):
Dre pretty insane, all right. So we talk a lot
about Austin Reeves and what he's done. Just a magnificent
start to the season. I keep banging the drum over
after what was a tough first game, and he certainly
took the poison bends. How instrumental DeAndre Ayton's been to everything, Yeah.

Speaker 7 (09:43):
I mean, DeAndre Aiden has been the best version of himself,
and it kind of sparks reminders of what we saw
when he was in Phoenix during their trips of the
finals in twenty twenty one. I think the common denominator
is that season play with Chris Paul, one of the
greatest point cards of all time, and now he's playing
with Luca don one of the other greatest point guards
of all time of this generation. And because of that,

(10:04):
there's so many easy baskets in the pick and roll.
They can throw them lobs. He's a player that when
he's engaged offensively, he tries a lot harder defensively, and
as we've seen, Deandre's got a lot of criticism he
doesn't always try very hard, but human nature and circumstances
show that this is the best fit for him because

(10:25):
he will be empowered to have those kind of scoring opportunities. Now,
with Lebron back, those opportunities aren't going to be there
as much. But just from a basing standpoint and all
attention being on Luca and Lebron and the stomachs and
Austin Reeves, he should get a lot of easy looks
that will keep him engaged.

Speaker 6 (10:45):
You know, back to JJ Reddick for a second, because
I think it was a little bit of a surprise
higher that's maybe aging better than it looked like on
its face.

Speaker 5 (10:55):
Smart guy.

Speaker 6 (10:56):
Definitely a basketball minded, like savant level iq of the
sport type player and now coach.

Speaker 5 (11:03):
But what where would you rate.

Speaker 6 (11:07):
Him at least early now in his career amongst his
peers as a head coach in the NBA.

Speaker 7 (11:14):
I think he's done a really good job and he's
made the most of the roster that he has. I
think the few things that happen he has going for
him is that he's still a young coach, so he
can be uberly obsessive and you know, just stay up
all night pouring over film and you know, trying to
grow into the job a lot better than an established veteran.

(11:37):
He's more connected to today's players because he's not far
removed from his own playing career. And he also makes
a lot of adjustments, and with the role players, he's
always puts them in a position to succeed, to maximize
their strengths minimize their weaknesses. So I think, you know,
he's telling all the buckets that you want in an
NBA coach right now. He's in tune with the modern game.

(11:59):
He knows how to make adjustments, and he's also very
communicative with his players without being a quote unquote pushover.
So I'd have to say he's never made mistakes. But
I think that you know, given the roster that he's had,
he's done as great of a job as you can expect.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
Early success ten and four.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
Eventually we'll get back into the throes of his ongoing
feud with Jason Smith.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
But let me just.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
Go back to the to the overarching theme of the night,
the return of Lebron James, I know, gave Vincent's mad
because he was also returning. So Lebron steals his thunder
by being activated. But all of that, the energy in
the room and expectations as you talk to people ahead
of this game, I think, like, what was the feeling

(12:46):
with an expectation for this one?

Speaker 7 (12:49):
Yeah, I think it has kind of this feeling of
like first day of school vibes, because Lebron hasn't played
all season, and even though he's been so used to
playing basketball, this is the first for him because he
literally had always been available opening night. So I think
because of that context, there was this kind of giddiness
that both Lebron showed after practice yesterday and during pregame

(13:13):
warmups today. During the game, I think the good thing
is he didn't force the issue. The bad thing is
he can't play defense right now, and he looks very,
very tired. So even if he's going to do the
right thing as far as fitting in and embracing whatever
role he has, he's going to need a lot, I think,
more time to catch up with his conditioning. But you

(13:33):
know what the schedule is in the Lakers favor, they
don't play again until Sunday in Utah, so they're likely
going to have the day off tomorrow. They'll have some
practices Thursday, Friday, Saturday, so that'll allow him to really
get back up to speed and in shape, so that
that's no longer an issue moving forward.

Speaker 6 (13:52):
Mark, would Lebron still be playing if his son wasn't
on this roster.

Speaker 7 (13:58):
It's a good question, I think. I think so only
because he still wants to make a lot of money
and he's playing at an all NBA level, And that's
the thing that makes this very difficult to weigh how
you end your career because he hasn't been mister iron man.
He had an injury this season with the sky Attica,
He's had other injuries in recent years with the Lakers,

(14:21):
but when on the floor, he has always played all
NBA level and he's always had some shot to be
in the playoffs, maybe even have an outside chance to
content for a title. And with that, it's really hard
to then say ahead of time, I'm going to now
retire from the NBA. So I think both sides, both

(14:43):
the Lakers and Lebron have kept things open ended just
in case they catch lay in a bottle this season,
and it's in both best interests for him to prolong
his career without taking a crazy discount. I think because
of all the moving parts here, it'll be pretty clear
by the end of the season. That it's best that

(15:04):
he leaves on this somewhat of a high note, and
then you know, the Lakers can now have Luka Dac
which as the true face of the franchise.

Speaker 5 (15:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (15:12):
I had all those opportunities to leave, but fifty two
million reasons plus.

Speaker 5 (15:15):
Not too exactly.

Speaker 3 (15:17):
Now in the postgame, I look forward to hearing you
asking about sciatica and how it affects defense.

Speaker 7 (15:23):
Oh, no doubt, and don't worry. I'll also add something
to get under JJ Redick's skin so that Jason Smith
is happy.

Speaker 3 (15:30):
Wasn't there You go, just raise your hand and you know,
identify one of us and they'll blame us for the questions.

Speaker 4 (15:37):
I got this for these idiots, and there you go.

Speaker 3 (15:39):

him in the Twitter verse writing. You see him on
TV in the greater Los Angeles area, no question about it,
but follow all his exploits at Mark g Underscore Medina
and hear him here and across the network over the
course of the week. Mark, welcome back into the throes
of the NBA season. Good luck navigating the second half

(16:02):
and the Lebron James media scrum.

Speaker 7 (16:05):
Well, it would be funny a lot. It'll be just
as interesting as the next trying to get back to
the finals.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
Ah, there you go.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
I will send that note over to Smith as he's
no doubt having his third piece of birthday cake.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
Good buddy, we'll talk to you again soon.

Speaker 7 (16:19):
Love it, Take care guys.

Speaker 4 (16:20):
Thanks Mark.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
That's Mark Medina at mark g Underscore Medina where you
find him rights for a couple of different spots, so
check out the links there, as well as his work
locally CBS and a little bit across.

Speaker 4 (16:34):
The TV for the Lakers.

Speaker 3 (16:36):
No question, good visit, good to you know, get into
the belly of the beast when we're talking about what
the Lakers may be. It's a long arduous run of
these eighty two games, Rich, I mean, we're only at
game fifteen. The fact that we're already that far into
the season with so many injured players. Again, the NBA
probably thrilled on a whole other level to be able

(16:58):
to promote Lebron James return.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
Oh no doubt. Yeah. Look, Lebron is box office.

Speaker 6 (17:04):
Whether you love him or hate him, the NBA loves
him because they love that you love him or hate him,
the NBA is non agnostic when it comes to what
side you're on in terms of love for Lebron or
hate for Lebron or I should say they are agnostic
over this because either way they make money. A polarizing

(17:26):
character always helps, you know, so whether it's you know,
the dread of the Cleveland Cavaliers when he was with
that group, or the.

Speaker 5 (17:35):
Trio of Bosh.

Speaker 6 (17:37):
Wade and James when he was in South Beach, or
what he's created between himself and Ad and now you know,
cobbled together here with Luca and JJ Reddick at the Helm.
We'll see if that nets them another championship for the Lakers.
But league wide, they love it. They love it because again,
whatever your opinion is on Lebron James, he attracts eyeballs,

(18:01):
and eyeballs make for ratings, and ratings makes the league
more money.

Speaker 3 (18:05):
Box office baby, I mean, there's not a whole lot
we can do with what suit is he wearing while
sitting on the sideline and will he have a sip
of wine? I mean, there's only so much we can
do in those marketplaces. At Hornberger where you find rich

a really good situation for Penn State. We'll talk about

Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you

Speaker 3 (20:28):
Welcome back in Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with Me,
Mike Carbon Note Jason Tonight.

Speaker 4 (20:33):
Instead it's our guy, doctor Rich Hornberger.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
Ask Rich six years International Football League, Penn State alum.
That plays into what we're going to talk about in
a second countdown to Kickoff presented by bet MGM. And
you hear him on the play by play analyzing San
Diego State as Tech's football during the college football season.
All beautiful things. He's with us as we get to

(20:58):
the holiday season and we get to call on Rich
and he dialed up because he wanted to watch Lebron
James return to the court with us here at Fox
Sports Radio. But Rich, we're watching that go down. It's
ninety seven ninety one Lakers with a six point lead
now minute left in the third quarter. But story that
we'd be remiss if we didn't circle back to news

(21:20):
from yesterday. But James Franklin head into Virginia Tech to
resurrect the Hokies. But it helps Penn State because they
had a forty nine million dollar buyout that has now
been reduced to just nine million dollars after Franklin's contract
gets signed. So that's a nice little windfall in the
holiday holiday holiday season.

Speaker 5 (21:44):
Yeah, no kidding.

Speaker 9 (21:45):
It's like if you were if you filed a late
tax situation, you got your return right before the holiday season,
that kind of thing. This is, this is pretty this
is pretty substantial for both sides of this, this this situation.
And let's start with Penn State, who obviously, when you

(22:08):
have north of forty million dollars on the books with
a coach who is not coaching any longer, you're gonna
have a couple things and big problems on your hand,
one of which is whatever donors you convinced to help
you fund that contract, those wells may run dry, you know,
so you may have to go elsewhere to find enough

(22:29):
coin to fund the next venture.

Speaker 6 (22:31):
Also, you know whoever is pulling the strings and making
the decisions. Ultimately, at Penn State, they kind of missed
on their defensive coordinator, who they gave much less money to,
but still a significant salary to. So, you know, if
you want to just start talking about the cascade of
recent events that has led to the demise of a

(22:54):
program that was ranked in some books first overall in
the country heading into the season, we know about preseason
polling and how inaccurate it is. Again, you know, see
where Texas is seated at this point in the season
compared to where you know, everybody thought they were heading. Look,
but my point being Penn State, this is enormous. This

(23:17):
is everything. They can basically target whoever they want. Now
money is no object. Turning the page to Franklin. Okay,
James Franklin, He's gonna be just fine too. James Franklin
is a culture builder, He is an excellent recruiter.

Speaker 5 (23:36):
He is going to turn around.

Speaker 6 (23:37):
Virginia Tech and mark my words, same way did Van Dy,
same way did Penn State. He's he's going to clean
up in the DC metro area.

Speaker 5 (23:48):
Now, one thing he had a Penn.

Speaker 6 (23:50):
State that he won't have as much access to at
Virginia Tech as money. You know, and I'm talking about
going after players competing on the recruiting in the transfer
portal with some of the bigger schools.

Speaker 5 (24:03):
You know, those donors don't travel.

Speaker 6 (24:05):
So you're gonna have to encourage people around the VA
Tech program to reach deep into those pockets and fund
what will have to be a pretty pretty like David
Verus Goliath, you know, effort to make some waves even
in conference. But if he can pull that off, we've

(24:26):
seen it before, he can really renovate a situation.

Speaker 3 (24:29):
According to a late twenty twenty four report, they ranked
eighth in the ACC from money spent on athletics including
nil so you know, hang a star on that as
we look to going forward. Look, James Franklin is a
hell of a coach and certainly a lot made on
top five, top ten losses, which, let's face it, not

(24:53):
a lot of folks running around with winning records in
those circumstances. Right.

Speaker 4 (24:57):
It's like we can talk about some of the greatest
quarter of.

Speaker 3 (25:00):
All time, but recognize that in the playoffs there are
a few that rise above and win consistently. Most guys
are covering around five hundred couple of games north or
south of that. Likewise, in the coaching fraternity, not a
lot of dominance. And that's why how you become a
legend from just you know, the hall of very good
in all of this. But you look at a squad

(25:22):
in Virginia Tech where you've had great success in the past,
go back to what Frank Beemer did for all of
those years, but falling on hard times, the last double
digit win season is a decade ago, going all the
way back to twenty sixteen. They go ten and four,
justin Fwente and a loss in the Camping World Bowl. Well,

(25:45):
it's play bowl games and where they were played and
what they were all about for one hundred No, I
don't want to do that. That's a waste of time
and resources. And if you have that knowledge, flush it
for something more useful. All of that to say rich
for Penn State. This just gives you the opportunity to
go do and and get whoever is your heart's desire.

(26:06):
I don't know if Matt Ruhle running around with Penn
State gear is part of the equation, because I should say, uh,
you had him doing that. You've got a bunch of
other coaches in the offing. We've had a couple of
rumors that other big time programs will be looking for coaches,
maybe Texas and Starkesian based on as you mentioned, the

(26:27):
the failure of this year, based on the high circumstances,
but current odds leaders. You know, you've got drink Witz
as one of the leaders. Jeff Brahm has been mentioned.
Elko signed a new deal, so he's done but you
know there there's there's a bunch of guys out there,
Joe Brady, does he get an NFL job? Does he
go to college?

Speaker 6 (26:48):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (26:48):
You know all all of that. It's it's an interesting spot.
But when you're suddenly gifted back that many million that
you don't have to go to the hand, hand around
the hat for a it's certainly a win for the university.

Speaker 5 (27:03):
Yeah it is.

Speaker 6 (27:04):
And you know when you start taking a look around,
you know, college football, will they have their pick of
the litter?

Speaker 5 (27:13):
Maybe not.

Speaker 6 (27:14):
You know, I think there are probably some other coaching
opportunities that you know, when when fully weighed out and measured,
and also when you think about quality of life and
the location of some of these schools, you know that
factors into because look, these coaches don't travel light. Many

(27:34):
of them are married men, many of them have families
and children of school age. Where you know, you you
got to make decisions not only for yourself, but for
the whole for the whole pack, for the whole clan.
What's good for the goose isn't always good for the ganders.
So you know, does the family want to move out
to State College Pennsylvania, You certainly are going to bring

(27:55):
them out there with you to kick the tires on
that opportunity.

Speaker 5 (27:59):
So yeah, you know, we'll see I will.

Speaker 6 (28:02):
I will say this, I'm very curious if there is
a good reason to wait a little bit longer before
making a decision, Like, for example, one of these top
coaches in college football right now may experience a little
bit of a drop off, not dissimilar to what's just
happened with James Franklin, maybe not as significant, but maybe

(28:25):
something similar. And then all of a sudden, do you
get an opportunity to lure one of these coaches to
break his contract with his current university over to your university.

Speaker 5 (28:36):
It can happen.

Speaker 6 (28:37):
So I actually think that even though they may not
have the pick of the litter necessarily, Penn State is
in great position to make a great higher will they
we'll find out. We know how these coach search tyro
cells situations go. Sometimes it's somebody completely out of left

(28:58):
field that gets hired and it leaves everybody's second guessing.
But I have a feeling it's going to be a splashyer.

Speaker 5 (29:05):
Name, and I have a feeling they're going to wait
a lot longer to make that decision.

Speaker 3 (29:09):
Yeah, I mean we talked about Florida and LSU in
their searches, the rumors of some of these other jobs
potentially coming open. What goes on with Lane Kiffen? Was
he given the ultimatum? Is a decision made on him
that sets a number of these other dominoes falling. But
it's a fun landscape, chaotic, just like watching players change teams.

(29:32):
I have a good laugh, you know, doing the trading
card thing, and they come out with these college football
sets and half of the guys on the checklist aren't
even with the same team that they're pictured with. Yeah,
I pulled that guy. He's like no, no, he's a
quarterback over there. It's like really, and you're explaining it
to the people in the you know, watching some of
these live streams, like yeah, that guy's not on that

(29:53):
team either, Like well, what the hell? Like, hey man,
they have to print these and they've got to get
all the autographs and everything in place ahead of time.
There's nothing you can do, like, well, that does be
no good? Like no, it's fun. He's a good player.
Just wait for an update and perhaps he'll be on
the right team the next release. But all of that

(30:13):
to say it's a fun time and for Penn State curiosity.
The last of those domino effects to talk about is
also those assistant coaches, because you've got to convince a
lot of them and their families to move along with
you and make sure that the money is right to
make that change as well.

Speaker 4 (30:30):
So that's a whole other part of the domino.

Speaker 5 (30:34):
It's also a long NFL season, and.

Speaker 6 (30:38):
I'm not saying that the coach search will wait till
till that season's completely over. But we've seen this before
where there could be a coordinator at the operating of
the NFL level who is willing to take a step down,
you know, in terms of prestige to go and be
a head coach at the college level. That's happened in

(31:00):
the past. I mean, you could you could see a
situation where maybe a head coach gets UH outed from
one of these programs here. I mean already we saw
that with UH with Brian Dable, you know, I mean,
is it is it possible maybe not specifically him, but
one of these other coaches that gets shown the door

(31:23):
UH leads to an opportunity for Penn State to pounce.

Speaker 5 (31:27):
I It's it's another Avenue.

Speaker 6 (31:29):
So and and don't get me wrong, there are a
lot of vacancies at the collegiate level right now that
are going to lend soft landing spots for maybe any
or many of those types of coaches you know, in
those types of situations. So Penn State absolutely has competition,
but they also offer one of the more elite rosters

(31:50):
in college football right now as it's as it sits.
And you know, if you hire the right coach who
strikes the right chord with some of the recruits who
jumped ship, well, James Franklin was suffering some of the
more embarrassing loss of losses of his tenure, maybe you
get some of those recruits back, Maybe you get to

(32:11):
flip a couple of new recruits that were committed to
other programs because all of a sudden interest is renewed
in Penn State as a national powerhouse.

Speaker 5 (32:20):
We'll see.

Speaker 3 (32:21):
I appreciated you getting the Penn State and the opportunity
to bounce. Not your first rodeo. He's rich Orenberger in
for Jason Smith on my Carbon time to send it
over to the news desk with Steve Desager, who's got
the Lakers keenly in his sites.

Speaker 10 (32:37):
Yeah, the Lakers seventeen to three runs. They've taken a
lead against Utah. But I do have a couple of
college basketball updates, including from the Aztecs at San Diego State.
They have hit a shot from beyond half court to
send it to overtime against Troy. It's now early in
the second overtime, tied at one hundred at San Diego State.

(32:58):
The other late game has about three minutes left. In
nineteenth ranked UCLA Bruins lead Sacramento State seventy one forty three,
and we had a double header at Madison Square Garden.
Michigan State won the first of those two, beating Kentucky
eighty three sixty six for the Spartans. Jeremy Fears the
first Division IE player to lead his team to a

(33:19):
four to oho start while having at least nine assists
in each game so far. First point guard to do
that in college who have since Doug Gottlieb of Oklahoma
stage in nineteen ninety nine. There you go, Now to
the update from downtown LA. The Lakers lead with about
eight minutes to go against Utah one sixteen to oneh three.

(33:41):
Luka Donsich with thirty seven points in thirty one minutes
on the court. Lebron James has played twenty eight minutes
in his season debut after the bad back. He has
eleven points, ten assists, just one turnover. The other late
game is at Portland. Phoenix leads the Blazers seventy eight
to sixty three in the third quarter. Wins for Orlando

(34:02):
and San Antonio at home. Boston got a victory at
Brooklyn one thirteen to ninety nine. Then that's two and
twelve so far. Detroit won it's eleventh straight game a
victory at Atlanta, won twenty to one to twelve. Ky
Cunningham twenty five points. Tennisis Milwaukee star Giannis Antennacumpo could
miss up to two weeks with a stray groin. The
Spurs Defon Castle, rookie of the year last season, has

(34:24):
a strained if he'll be reevaluated in one to two weeks.
In the new college football playoff rankings, the top three
stayed the same, Georgia's number four Oklahoma up to number
eight Alabama number ten. Miami would get in if it's
acc chant. Miami ranked thirteenth at the moment. College football
selection Sunday is December seventh. Bengals wide receiver Jamar Chase

(34:47):
is out this weekend. Is one game suspension was upheld.
Texans quarterback c J. Stroud, with a concussion, will miss
a third straight game this Thursday against the Bills. The
Angels traded outfielder Taylor Ward to Bolton US men's soccer
when it's final exhibition of the year in Tampa five
to one against Uruguay.

Speaker 4 (35:05):
That to you, Thanks so much, Steve.

Speaker 3 (35:07):
As we continue here at Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith
Show with Me, Mike Carmon, no Jason rich Ornberger in
his stead, we're gonna circle back.

Speaker 4 (35:15):
To the AFC.

Speaker 3 (35:16):
We talked about NFC teams and the level of disbelief.
Perhaps there are one or two on the AFC side.
As we break down that playoff bracket and keep an
eye on what's transpiring with the Lakers. We'll do that
as we continue here from the Fox Sports Radio studio.

Speaker 2 (35:32):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific. Welcome back in.

Speaker 3 (35:41):
Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith Show with Bib Mike Harmon, No.
Jason Tonight off for his birthday, hit him up at
halbut a Fresca tell him, how about you love him
in instead? Our guy Rich Ornberger alone from down in
San Diago, is he's keeping a prize of the college
basketball work of the Aztecs and we're watching the Lakers

(36:02):
put the final touches. You think Utah's got one more run,
ad them down twenty one or is it done?

Speaker 5 (36:10):
Yeah?

Speaker 6 (36:10):
Yeah, I mean they could lob up a couple of
finger rolls.

Speaker 5 (36:14):
I mean it's possible.

Speaker 7 (36:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (36:15):
I mean we started going back to Hornisek and all
of those guys of the past, you know, and trying
to find some of this stock legends and get them
in the mix.

Speaker 4 (36:25):
But certainly tough order.

Speaker 3 (36:27):
I mean, if you had that Lebron bet to score
at least ten points, you at least cash that one.
So you got that going for it as they win
going away, allaying any fears, at least for one night,
that this experiment would fail. All right, it's game fifteen,
so you know, putting grandiose tags on it, you know,
not exactly the wise way, but that's what sports radio is,

(36:50):
which is why we shift back to the AFC. Earlier
we did the NFC and looking at the playoff picture
and where we're at some teams that there's still some
hope and excitement over what the final few weeks of
the season holds. A lot of injury concerns across the league,
no question about it. But when we look at the AFC,

(37:11):
as we sit the Broncos the number one seed with
the Patriots hot on their heels. I had best win
percentage in conference games, gives them the tiebreaker. Then you
have the Colts. The Steelers are still alive at six
and four. Keep an eye on the Rogers injury and
what that means going forward. The Bills with a big
win over the Buccaneers this past week. Chargers at seven

(37:35):
and four, but a season that I don't know that
the Jaguars game that seems to just be the fift
ring of hell for them because that was supposed to
be the revenge game, man. They were supposed to get
back for that playoff game, and instead they got bludgeoned
from pillar to post. And then those same Jaguars sitting
in the seventh seed ahead of Houston and Kansas City

(37:56):
and Baltimore all at five and five. Who's the in
the group?

Speaker 5 (38:02):
Man?

Speaker 4 (38:02):
Is it just easy to just say Pittsburgh and move on.

Speaker 6 (38:07):
Well, you know, I don't believe Pittsburgh are necessarily frauds.

Speaker 5 (38:13):
I think that the.

Speaker 6 (38:16):
I think the Aaron Rodgers injury, depending how long it
keeps him off the field, which it doesn't look like
it's gonna keep him very long off the field, is
going to determine a lot.

Speaker 5 (38:25):
I'll be honest with you, and I.

Speaker 6 (38:27):
Hate to say it because I think that they're a
team that's built right, but I do not think they're
gonna be able to overcome the injuries up.

Speaker 5 (38:33):
Front on the offensive line. I think the.

Speaker 6 (38:36):
Chargers, if you're forced, if I'm forced to use the
word fraud, I think the Chargers are fraudulent. I think
they're a little bit of you know, all smoke no steak.
Right now, it's it looks good on paper, that seven
and four record, but I mean, justin Herbert's not going

(38:57):
to survive this season at this rate. He's getting legend
out there, Mike. They do not have an offensive line
to speak of.

Speaker 3 (39:03):
No, that's this game was truly difficult to watch and
monitor as you went possession to possession, and certainly on
the other side, because you weren't getting much juice offensively,
you just watch Jacksonville just bludging them and run the
ball effectively. Trevor Lawrence didn't have to do much because

(39:24):
that's the team. You know, if we're just picking from
the top seven that I just hold my hand up going.
I don't trust the passing game to give me enough
when I need to win big games down the stretch.
But Steelers at six and four, I'd be remiss. There's
just the lingering question. I don't want to do it
to him because I've championed him going back to his

(39:44):
time with the Giants of is there just that clunker
waiting in a playoff game for Daniel Jones or can
they mitigate that by Jonathan Taylor continuing to be superhuman?

Speaker 4 (39:57):
Like that's the the one I weigh right, Yeah.

Speaker 6 (40:01):
Yeah, the Colts I feel like they're real. But again,
that's DJ at quarterback. We've seen what that looks like
in the past. That can unravel quickly. It sort of
feels like they're waiting for somebody to step on the
yarn from back the sweater. But he's looked good in
the Shane Stike in offensive system the Denver Broncos. I
mean shoestring wins over lesser opponents all season long. Super

(40:26):
inconsistent play from bow Nicks. We saw him catch fire
later in the season for the Broncos last year. He's
played better the latter part of this season so far,
but not nearly as well as last year.

Speaker 5 (40:41):
I don't know.

Speaker 6 (40:41):
I'm not completely sold on Dever either, and that's saying
a lot because they carry a nine to two record
and Sean Payton, I think is doing a great job
coaching around some of their apparent weaknesses well.

Speaker 3 (40:56):
And they lose JK. Dobbins, so it's more RJ. Harvey
uh going forward and other backs that come in to
the mix. But you know, not being able to rely
on that passing attack like fourth quarter wins. We talked
about it with Chicago a little bit earlier year of
living dangerously, but at some point you believe in that

(41:17):
d u Certan being out and they're still getting it done.
So it's a curiosity, no question about it. But the
Chargers sloughing off certainly helps their cause. He's Rich ornbergerround
by Carbon coming up next. We stay in the NFL.
How about some positive

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
