(00:54):
you that big Olympic event that more people watch than
any other. But first, I gotta say I kind of
was surprised watching Jimmer for Debt and the United States
lose their first three on three game today, Jim. I
was kind of surprised because I thought, Oh, Jimmer's gonna
hit all kinds of shots. Jimmer. Jimmer played good. No, no,
we just got rolled. Yeah, leaders got rolled by Serbia.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Height taking down you know the game.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
It's Jimmer and just Jim Jim. I was really Jimmer
was the guy eight years ago, Jimmyeah, it's been a
long time. This is not Chase Budding or trying to
come back and play volleyball now. Oh, I mean he
had a good run. I was really you know, I
was really surprised at watching the three on three was
how fast the game went. There was no breaks, like
as soon as you know, like because you're thinking playing

(01:39):
three on three, like when you play in the school
yard and a basket is made, Okay, we're gonna walk
it back, take it out. Check. No, these guys are
moving right back in fast like it take it easy
for a couple of seconds. I'm like, I'm getting exhausted
just watching it early half quickarly going back off the
back behind the three point line and coming back for
hoop twenty two to fourteen your final hmm. Man. When

(02:01):
they introduced the teams and they showed the referees took
pictures together. But I mean, think about it. We didn't
even qualify last Olympics. No, no, no, three on three.
We didn't and then Jimmer only had four points. Jimmer, well,
we only scored fourteen, But I mean, come on, watching
Serbia hit threes that are worth two, I'm going, wait.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
This is I gotta see if he was a part
of that trading card set that just came out. I
feel like I needed Jimmer for Debt, just to say,
that's how I marked the twenty twenty four Olympics. That
and they just did a whole package on the the
NBC telecast for the women's gymnastics where they were showing
all these angles of Simone Bile like stop, and then

(02:39):
they were showing like she had lasers coming out of
her eyes, like how she's seeing the mat and seeing.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Everything just like or did she go swim in the
Seine and now she has these superpowers? Yeah, because she
swam in the s No, well, look, not a bad deal.
In the middle of Simone Biles, she jumps and all
of a sudden she grows a tail, and then the mutation,
her hands getting webbed, and suddenly she has to leave.
Everybody yells and screams and runs out, and she runs

(03:04):
in and she dives into the set and now she's
living in the set.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
You did you just kind of make her night crawler
a little bit. But yeah, like they were doing this
whole thing, and like, look at the angles that she's
seeing as she's like, I'm not quite sure what the
audio was to match it up, but it does look
like something straight out of a superhero movie.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
No, it was great. Why And then I'm like, oh,
she stepped out of bounds and she stept out of
bounds again, Oh, what's the what's the point to that?

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (03:29):
No, no, we're winning the gold medal. Okay, no, no, the
point deduction is not that great. We're winning the gold medal. Yeah,
I think I think those are just suggested lines at
this point. Well, look watching her the biggest and and
look this is just me, right, this is just me
average gymnastics wat you know, watching you know, in the Olympics,
watching everybody perform, I don't she goes so much faster

(03:52):
than everybody else. And I don't mean, I don't mean,
I meant, I mean, like her routine always seems like
it's done faster, there's no catch your breadth, it's just
really rapid the way she does it. And I'm like,
did that hurt her today? Because she stepped out of
bounds a couple of times, Like I don't know, Like
I'm just asking, but she goes so much faster than everybody.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Does she wonder if that does she get acceptance because
of degree of difficulty because she is.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
She gets ten feet higher than everybody else. Watch it
jumping me. Oh my god, how high she gets. That's unbelievable.
But I always why, But I wonder, like, is she
going too fast? She's speeding through like and they always
tell you when you take a test, don't go too fast, right,
don't go too fast, go slow, go slow. Like I'm
watching and all the other gymnasts that are all really good,
they all their pace is a little bit more measured.

(04:38):
It's still with a sense of urgency. But Simone Biles
and I don't know if this is is it because
it's her first Olympics back and she's feeling the adrenaline,
so she's going faster or not. It's hard for me.
But I noticed that today watching going wow, seems like
she's just going faster than he.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Well, we've watched a lot of gymnastics here right, the
UCLA team getting to run certainly viral sensations the last
few years there's a lot of paw because the crowd's
losing their minds to set times where his hair. It's like,
get get into your routine and move on. And just
looking at some of the scores that were achieved by
other nations, pretty pretty pretty poor efforts.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
That's four years of training for those minus force. All
those commercial used to have. I trained four years for
ten seconds ten seconds Nagano ninety four or whatever it is,
Lila Hammer ninety two.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
Let's think of think of all of these events like swimming, gymnastics,
all these things that it comes down to a minor
point valuation or say in the pool, lost by you
know the length of my finger. Yeah, ah yeah, there's
there's golden brons like ah, how how much was the
you finished third?

Speaker 1 (05:47):
How distant point zero? Like the dude who loves that
Michael Phelps. When Michael Phelps pushed the the sensory just
got there a little bit fast. That is it. It's
waffer thing, waffer thin. Four years of train Now, I'm
gonna tell you the ratings have come out for the
Olympics so far, and the number one rated event outside

(06:10):
of a couple of gold medal events that we saw
table tennis. Table tennis is pretty good. Do Do Do
Do Do Do Do Do Do do the number one
rated event outside a couple of gold medal like just
saying the number rated event where we were because we're
watching pool play now for a lot of different things
before you get to the medals, number one rated event.
More people watched the United States basketball team in their

(06:33):
opening game than anybody else. Well, Kevin Durant was kind
of a big deal Sunday morning, except not the men.
Oh more people watch the women in their opening game
than any other event. Interesting, here's why this is a
big deal. There's gonna be the group and you've already

(06:55):
seen a little bit of it online that says, see,
we told you were more than Caitlin Clark. We don't
need Katelan Clark. People are watching the game because of
Caitland Clark. Yeah, okay, I get it. And this is
what we have said. Women's basketball is growing because of
Caitlin Clark. Right, that women's basketball was in a spot
where the WNBA every year Summer League didn't get a

(07:17):
lot of headlines. But Caitlin Clark is the transformer. She's
Magic and Larry combined. Right, So no, growth. It's slow growths,
and now suddenly it was hurry up and everybody cares.
Now everybody's watching. It's still a Caitlin Clark effect. If
Caitlin Clark's not in the WNBA this many people aren't
watching this game. And I guarantee you two or three

(07:39):
out of every ten people watching this game, we're watching
it hoping the United States loss because they didn't take
Caitlin Clark. Is a real thing.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
We have discussed that for our decade plus here at
Fox Sports Radio. It is a very real thing. You
might watch or listen to a radio show. Hi, whoever
you are out there to hate, watch, hate listen. Oh, absolutely,
so what we're gonna say hot take nonsense and and
takes against your team because remember we all hate your

(08:09):
team and tell your friends that we hate your team.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
On the iHeartRadio happened, Take us wherever you go. If
two or three out of ten people were hate watching
or watching with the curiosity of, oh if they lose
without Caitlyn Clark, boy, that'd be something like that. That's
kind of how I think. Oh, I had a guy
with a sign who thought, yeah, and that that's what
I want to get into here because for all of this,

(08:33):
Caitlyn Clark and it's and I'm gonna make a really
crazy point here. We talked last night that the United
States team would be better off with Caitlyn Clark than
without her. Why because she is the best point guard
in the WNBA. She's the best point guard that could
be on this roster. The point guard struggled. The guards
all struggled in the first game against Japan. They didn't
shoot well, they didn't pass the ball well, they turned

(08:54):
the ball over, picked up their dribble. They weren't able
to look. The US is gonna win in the gold
medal because Brianna Stewart and Asia Wilson and Britney Griner
are just far and away better than anything we're going
to see, and two of them are gonna be on
the floor together at all times. They're impossible to stop.
They're just that good. Our bigs are just that good.

(09:16):
But guards struggled. We'd be better off with Caitlin Clark.
Now here's where Isaac, when you think I'm gonna Zoe, Okay,
Kaitlin Clark deserves to be on the team. She should
have been on the team from the beginning because they
every year they take the number one pick in the draft.
They didn't this year. Why because of pettiness and jealousy.
You saw before the game against Japan, the one fan

(09:37):
that held up the sign you need Caitlin Clark to
beat us. And as the players are in the layup
line warming up, they kind of looked at it and said, hey, look,
look look at that sign. Look at that sign, and
they all looked at it. Just that little snippet tells
you that Caitlyn Clark lives in their heads and motivates them, right,
because why would you care about that sign? But they

(09:58):
all cared, They all and looked at it because it
was a sign about Caitlyn Clark. So you know, there's
pettiness and jealousiness. You know. The players likely were asked, hey,
Caitlyn Clark, No, this is our group, Like doesn't this
seem like a clickie group of players. They're like, hey,
we've been together for a while. This is our group.
We're gonna go win with Caitlyn. It's all about her.
I don't know if she's gonna fit in. You know,

(10:20):
Cheryl Reeve doesn't like Caitlyn Clark. It doesn't like what
she represents because she's been the most vocal about being
anti Caitlyn Clark. So with her comments on social media
or their comments about Caitlyn after games they played, you
know she's there, so you know it's about pettiness and jealousiness.
So yes, but how much does that push them and

(10:41):
how much will that push them to blow out everybody
they play against, because this is a team that hasn't
lost since nineteen ninety two, since the semifinals in nineteen
ninety two, US women's national team in basketball has won
every single game, if every time every year every four years,
you need motivation of sar, you need something, and you say,

(11:01):
what's gonna get us through the dolts? We're expected to
show up and just blow the doors off of everybody.
The Kate you can't win without Caitlyn Clark. This is
a big motivator for everybody, For Diana Tarossi, for Asia Wilson,
for Kelsey Plum, for all of them. Say you know
what you think we needed, Caitlyn Clark will show you.
Watch We're gonna go beat the crap out of people
because you think we need Caitlyn Clark to win. So

(11:23):
in a weird way, right, she needs to be on
the team because you would make them better. I know
she able to find great passing lanes to get the
ball to the bigs a lot easier than they did
because there are a lot of missed near turnovers too,
they that Kelsey Plum and Chelsea Gray nearly had in
addition to the turnovers they did have. And she'll hit
better than twenty percent from beyond the art. But at
the same time, for this where you're playing every couple

(11:44):
of days, you're playing a game, tell me that's not
something Cause if Caitlyn Clark is in your head, that's
gonna motivate you, and that's gonna motivate this group. So
in a weird way, her not being there is still
motivating this team to roll to a gold bade O
common enemy.

Speaker 3 (11:59):
Right, here's the the player that hovers over us, and
certainly for coach, she's got just major problems with it,
which is why the margin of victory can't be big enough. Right,
twenty six points the other night or the day, I
should say, or night in France. But the idea that
you have the players and Diana Trossi at every turn,

(12:23):
it's talking about, well, you're supposed to retire.

Speaker 1 (12:24):
She's still playing at a high level. That's fine. But
Caitlin Clark and her game, we certainly see it. And
do they need her for the gold medtain?

Speaker 2 (12:33):
No?

Speaker 3 (12:34):
And in this case, does she get an honorary medal?
Because she is the ghost in the machine, as it were,
and that motivation. I do like that you coin the
word jealousiness, jealous that jealousiness. Well, that was pretty good.

Speaker 1 (12:49):
Pettiness and jealousness because that makes sense. We're gonna pettiness
and jealousy. Pettiness and jealousiness. Yes, jealousy ness, jealousness. No,
that's good. I kind of dig that. That sounds like
the title of an album. Have you heard jealousiness? Oh
my god, it's so great. Jealous close to jelical. And
then we start talking about cats, jellical cat.

Speaker 3 (13:10):
So the last thing is they should have walked over
and asked to sign that guy's sign or gone full
wwe and broken it over one of their knees.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
A cat's so clever as magical, mister mistuflease joo, we
did there. It's a jelical can leaving no stone unturned
here on Fox Sports Radio. Even though you love her
hate listen to us on vacation or on a boat somewhere,
because I think that's where Caitlyn Clark is on vacation

(13:41):
with a boyfriend and friends, motivating this team USA without
even being there.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
I got to say, I did see the little preview
of her running around in the in the new.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
Shoe line, new shoes for her line Sketchers. They're awesome.
New Balance. Now I do have a silver lining for
Kitlin c Okay, what we got Frostburg.

Speaker 3 (13:59):
She does have as many points as Jason Tatum.

Speaker 1 (14:02):
And as many minutes play. Don't forget Halliburton. He's the
happy Don't mention my name. Everybody's talking about Tatum. Don't
mention I was the only point guard pick for the team,
and I really am not playing at all.

Speaker 3 (14:17):
Yeah, but this is Steve Kerr. Also in the final
year of TNT's deal. He's helping the NBA because everybody's mad.

Speaker 1 (14:25):
Don't give me that smoke, man, I don't want it.
Coming up next, we'll preview the biggest game of tomorrow,
the biggest two games of tomorrow. Keep it right here,
Jason and Mike, This is Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
Fox Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best
friend Mike Harmon. Yeah, I've said throughout the show tonight,
everybody did well the trade deadline today everybody did not
everybody well, But that that's the thing I said. Everybody did.
You can give me a team, give me any team.
They did well. Rockies Rockies, yes, they did great. Diamondbacks

(15:40):
Diamondbacks did awesome. There, Brewers did terrific. How about the
Blue Jays. Blue Jays were awesome. They gave away a
lot of guys, they got like twenty five players back.
But Bishett and Vladder still there. It doesn't matter. They
have good players still there and they traded.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
Okay, so we've everybody did what we got your the
principle of your your state.

Speaker 1 (16:02):
Everybody did well because nobody gave away prospects. That boy,
you gave away too much. Okay. There wasn't a lot
of star power out there was very regionalized. Today they
said college football is regionalized, right, Oh, we need more
national teams because it's regionalized. But today the trade deadline
was regionalized. Like you worried about your team and how

(16:22):
they did what they were going to do and buy
and large. If you were a bad team, you sold.
If you were a good team, you bought. It wasn't expensive.
The bad teams were able to move the players and
get prospects back. The better teams were able to get
the players and not give up great process. Didn't have
to give up the farm.

Speaker 3 (16:38):
Everybody had a good day, right because there were rumors, hey,
for one of these starting pitchers, maybe the Orioles would
have to look Yeah, Jackson Holiday instead he got called up.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
Yeah, everybody had a good and Ethan Holidays gonna be
the number one picking the MLB Draftnicks to Holiday Holiday
Holiday from Matt Holliday to Jack Holiday Holiday. Yes you're
tanking for Ethan Holliday. Yeah, sure, you're taking for the
third Holiday Day. How good could he really be? It's
like the third, the third movie in a series. How
good could it really be? It's the third? Jedi was
pretty good. Okay, that's really the sixth movie. But okay, sure,

(17:09):
that's fine. Jedi was okay. Was Jedi the worst of
the first three? Yes, it was. Jedi wasn't as good
as Empire. An Empire was better than Star Wars. I
mean Godfather three, come on, man, you kidding? They wanted
Sophia Coppola band from Hollywood after that and came out
there was that was terrible. Godfather three was aw it's

(17:29):
the Tycho musical three? No, come on? How good? Descendants three?
Now you give me nothing nothing?

Speaker 5 (17:34):
No.

Speaker 1 (17:35):
Descendence had Hades in it, though, that guy was great.
Hades was okay, but other than that it was better.

Speaker 3 (17:40):
Maybe he was pretty good. Maybe the Red like they
really not Hades Town, not Hades Town, but Hades.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
Wear down Hades. Uh maybe Mission Impossible three better than
the first two, better than the second one. Yes, yeah,
that's why, but not but again you need one outline.
It's a third one. How good can it be? Again? Okay,
we're kind of out of ideas's ted Pool three was
just now like season three of The Bear? How good?

(18:08):
How it gets terrible seasons? Did you finish it or
did you know? I still have two more episodes to go,
and I can't wait. Who has here? Terrible?

Speaker 3 (18:17):
It's a it's got a few moments it is. I
can cobble together one one one episode of good moments.

Speaker 1 (18:23):
Eight episodes. I have one good moment for about ten
minutes and that's about it. Everything else. I feel like,
did they do this during the writer strike? Because there
it seems like there's no writing. They're all just improving
lines together and nothing is happening. Nothing is happening. I'm
eight episodes in, nothing has happened. Everything is the same.
It's like, okay, either either you know they all decided, Look,

(18:46):
we're all stars now. We want to do different things,
but we're contracted for one last year of the Bear,
so let's get let's do it. Let's do it, and
then we'll move on. I told you I was nervous
about the bear when they were dropping all the episodes.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
Yeah, and I'm right, oh no, as soon as they
dropped them in one fell swoop and it was great
to be able to go and watch it and run
through it as I did.

Speaker 1 (19:03):
And then I was sad because I had no desire
to go revisit it.

Speaker 3 (19:06):
It's ten Normally, when you feature my hometown and there's
little bits and pieces of Chicago mixed therein, you can
I'm a sucker. I'll come back for it, right. Nostalgia
is a very powerful device. Yeah, I have not been
compelled to go back to season three. I want to
go back to seasons one and two. I would remember
the good times with Richie. It's Maddie and everybody.

Speaker 1 (19:31):
If I say make the spaghetti, make this spaghetti. But
not everybody had a great trade deadline. The Padres had
the best trade deadline, well because they got two lights
out relievers. I'm telling you they're coming. Watch out for them.
I've been saying it for the last week and a half.
Watch out for the Padres. They went again tomorrow. Suddenly,
look how close they are. They're going for it this year.

(19:54):
Tanner Scott was a great acquisition. Jason Adam was a
great acquisition. You could see the energy tonight. They were
trailing the Dodgers five nothing. They tied with two home
runs in the ninth to win it in the tenth.
Watch out for the Padre.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
Now, a curious stat that we have to look at is,
you know, my White Sox being the gold standard of
an aptitude as we talk, you know, gold, gold, silver,
and bronze. Right, we'll put it all in Olympic terms.
Here is twenty eight blown saves this year, one more
than the number of wins occurred by the team, the

(20:28):
Dodgers or second. Yeah, yeah, this was their twenty second. Now,
you know, if you go to save percentages, you have
more opportunities. Yes, you're gonna have more blown but still
they're at twenty two. Yeah, it's not great, Bob, Now,
not great, not good. But despite all that, the only
baseball team that had a bad day was the Angels

(20:48):
because they didn't really do anything and Anthony Rendon went
back on the injured leggin and Mike Trout's rehab was stopped. So, yeah,
that's kind of a thing I think. I hope, yeah,
I hope.

Speaker 1 (21:02):
With Trout.

Speaker 3 (21:03):
It's more the what do we get for trying to
ramp him back up now right that it's a pragmatic
decision of you know, what's the best case scenario. Yea,
he ramps up, he plays two weeks, waves his little
cap for the final two weeks in September. Worst case scenario,
we ramp him up, he comes back second week into
September and he really really hurts himself again.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
I tell you he's coming back. The rest of your
career is a full time DH You are done playing
the field, Like when when? When when Brad Pitt tells
Scott Haddiburg, Scott, your catching days are over? Okay?

Speaker 3 (21:39):
But like Anthony Rendon, is he the worst signing in
baseball history?

Speaker 1 (21:45):
I might be, boy.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
I'll tell you right if we sat down and went
through some contracts, because you could say what you want
about pools.

Speaker 1 (21:52):
He made money for you and makes signing Mike Hampton
look like signing Bryce Harper. That's really He hit more
home runs during his You're then Rendo nets so yes, sorry,
bad day for the Angels. Coming up. In ninety seconds,
we'll preview the first of two of the biggest games
of the day Tomorrow. The two biggest games of the

(22:13):
day tomorrow. But first, Kevin Wirtt has what's trending in
the wide world of sports. Everybody foaming the mouth, not
being able to believe another win for the Mets as
they shut out the Twins do nothing.

Speaker 6 (22:24):
I think everyone out here is foaming out the mouth
of the Dodgers blowing their second five run lead in
a week, and they did so against the Potters. Now,
the Mets did beat the Twins to nothing, as Sean
and I had seven outstanding innings, two hits, a loud,
eleven strikeouts, one walk. But what we care about out
here is the Dodgers again losing to the Padres. They
were up five to nothing but then end up losing

(22:45):
six to five an extra inning, San Diego launching two
home runs in the bottom of the night before they
take it in the tenth.

Speaker 1 (22:51):
All in two strikes. Here's the pitch on the way
Solano swings. It's a ground ball past the dive of.

Speaker 4 (22:56):
Fernandez down the left field line to win it. Kim scores,
Solano walks it off, and the Padres come back from
a five nothing deficit to beat the Dodgers in tent.

Speaker 6 (23:10):
Padres Radio Network there with the call as San Diego
wins at six ' five, and it was a big
day for both of these teams at the trade deadline.
The Dodgers were on cloud nine for much of the
day and for much of this game because they acquired
arguably the top starting pitcher on the market and Jack
Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers. They just gave up a
couple of minor leaguers in exchange. The Dodgers also getting

(23:31):
outfield help as they got Kevin Kiermeyer from the Blue Jays.
But what they really could have gotten help at is
in their bullpen, as again they were up five runs
end up losing it to the San Diego Padres, who
got Marlin's closer Tanner Scott Yeah, Miami dealing him this
afternoon to San Diego, so the Padres getting so much
needed help in their bullpen. Miami also trading outfielder Brian

(23:54):
de la Cruz to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Baltimore Orioles
also getting some help they got Eloy Menez from the
Chicago White Sox, and earlier today the Orioles did beat
the Blue Jays six to two. Everything in Major League
Baseball has gone final tonight. We did mention the Mets
beating the Twins to nothing against Sean Manea an outstanding performance,
eleven strackouts at the seven innings, Pirates over the Astros

(24:15):
six to two, Angels beat the Rockies ten to seven,
The Diamondbacks pound the Nationals, get the seventeen to nothing,
and the Diamondbacks on a roll now they've won seven
of their last ten games and six of their last
seven games. Athletics over the Giants five to two. The
White Sox fall to the Royals four to three, Braves
over the Brewers five to one. The Cardinals blow out

(24:35):
the Rangers eight to one, Mariners top the Wright Sockx
ten to six, Mets shut out the Twins to nothing,
Reds over the cub sixty to three, Rays beat the
Marlins nine to three, and in extra innings, the Yankees
hold off the Phillies seven to six. In the NFL,
ESPN the first to report that the Chicago Bears have
given wide receiver DJ Moore a four year, one hundred

(24:57):
and ten million dollar contract extension, with eighty two point
six million of it guaranteed. And at the Olympics, the
US women's gymnastics team back a top of the podium,
winning gold in the team all round event, led by
the past two individual gold medal winners some Own Biles
and soon e Lee. Was the first gold medal for
the United States since twenty sixteen. They won silver back

(25:20):
in A twenty twenty one and the US women's rugby
team capturing the first medal since nineteen twenty four, winning
the bronze beating Australia as time expired.

Speaker 1 (25:30):
Back to you guys, thank you, Kay dub So. Tomorrow,
the United States women's national team in soccer finishes group
play by taking on Australia right moving on to the
next round, and I'm gonna give you a big spin
forward because coming into the tournament, the big question was
was this going to be the dawn of a new
era for US women's soccer. All the big stall warts

(25:52):
are gone, Megan Rapino's gone, Alex Morgan wasn't selected for
the team. There's a lot of pressure after their game
against Germany and specifically after watching up top what the
forwards were able to do together. Tomorrow's gonna be the
day that cements that, yes, we are in the dawn
of a new era for US women's soccer. Because of

(26:14):
Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith. I was skeptical
of Sophia Smith and Trinity Robin because in the World
Cup they were all They're the great and stars. Now
they were just okay, they weren't difference makers. Sophia Smith
was clearly not ready for the moment. But this is
a different team. They are playing much differently. And again
the addition of Mallory Swanson is everything we told you

(26:37):
before the when the when World Cup last year, Hey,
not having Mallory Swanson, that could be the big difference
between winning a winning the World Cup and not winning
Mallory Swanson. Before this this Olympics started, we told you
if they win, it's gonna be because of Malory Swanson
putting the ball in the back of the net. She
is the difference maker, she's the scorer, She's the one

(26:58):
this offense revolves around. And the chemistry and the confidence
and the pressure that they put on Germany the entire game.
It was incredible to watch. Now he said it, say,
one game, is it not? I'm feeling pretty good that
against one of the top four teams in the world.
This was how they played. This is how they're going
to play now, maybe it's they all need to play together.

(27:19):
I mean when if if Mallory Swanson is missing, they're
a lot easier control. But boy, all three of them
playing that way, good luck, good luck trying to hold
them back, because it really was a sight to see.
They had everything. They had, the confidence they had, the
chemistry they had, the sparkle they had. They were that
it factor that had spark the spark for they had.
They they had everything the it factored that the team

(27:42):
was missing like this, Like I really feel like tomorrow
we're gonna cement in and say, hey, that game, the
the second group game against Germany in the in the
in the Olympics, that was when the next era of
great women's soccer started. What's interesting from that game is
you saw a couple of really big pushes and really

(28:03):
the offense as fluid as we've seen in a long time, right,
a lot of speed up front, and certainly Swanson changes
the game. You see in.

Speaker 3 (28:14):
Rodman really come into her own. Sophia Smith, we already
knew how good she could be, so having that front line,
the attack was relentless and sure you had a couple
of goals which were kind of excuse me, but you
had enough opportunities, were like, all right, the dam's gonna break. Conversely,

(28:34):
I'm more concerned about the defense coming into this one, right,
you've got Australia is a.

Speaker 1 (28:40):
Heavy underdog in this one. They did come through with
that massive six ' five win over Zambia, wide open game.
Most write ups basically just said nobody bothered to play defense,
which is kind of cool. So maybe you get some
of that attack because we certainly saw it from Germany
right where they had chance and there was up to

(29:01):
the task, made a couple of big saves, a couple
of near misses, you know, just wide of the post
or just over the crossbar.

Speaker 3 (29:08):
So the defense was a bit lacking. Even though you
have a four to one sheet. You go back and
watch the game you got, you're excited on the offense.
Then they need to clean things up on the back
end otherwise we start getting in shootouts. You feel pretty
good about it because it'll be entertaining soccer, There's no

(29:28):
question about it, because your offense is certainly up to
the task. But you know, defensively, that would be the
one thing for your your new coaching staff to go
through and make sure you tightened up over what was
missing the other day.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
And you know the other thing that this means is
that we talked about it before before the olemic. Again
we're ahead of the curve. This probably cements the end
of Alex Morgan's run with the women's national team, unless
she's willing to accept. Potentially, and I mean potentially, if

(30:05):
a Megan Rapino type role of the last World Cup
where it's listen, maybe you'll play, maybe you won't. If
we need a goal, maybe the seventy fifth minute you
can go in because maybe we can use some of
your expertise. Maybe if we need for penalties, whatever it well,
but for.

Speaker 3 (30:20):
Her it was about set pieces, right, Repino as skilled
as she was when we start talking and our piece, right,
we're awful.

Speaker 1 (30:28):
The women's set pieces are still terrible. Men's set pieces
are awful too. Maybe it's an epidemic. So but she
clearly is is not the player that she was, and
that's all it is is just she's not the young
player that Sophia Smith, not the player that Mallory Swanson
or Trinity Robbin is. And I'll take you back to
the first goal against Germany where Sophia Smith and Trinity

(30:51):
Robin get credit for the play, But this play was
made because Mallory Swanson blitzes down the middle to suck
up the defenders tour. It's her and the ball goes
past her and it's an easy tap in. Right, Alex
Morgan's not making that run, at least not to the
point where the defenders have to go to her and
they can't break up the play. If anything, Alex Morgan

(31:13):
is gonna be off side. We saw that she struggled
so well.

Speaker 6 (31:16):
I mean we saw it.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
Come on, man, a quarterback on she tried Bob Stony game.
Is this your homework, Larry? Is this your but? But
she's not. She's not that player, and unless she's willing
to accept that role, it's kind of done. And it's

(31:38):
crazy because that commercial that's been running with her and
Sophia Smith where they go, hey, hey, I'm Alex Morgan,
I'm Sophia Smith. You don't need to choose, like you
don't need to choose what to watch on TV. I'm like, oh,
this is awkward because like, obviously Sophia Smith was chosen
and Alex Morgan was not chosen. Was that the one
so awkward. I think. So it's just so you don't

(31:58):
need to choose. Actually we're both teams and Hayes did
did choose and didn't choose you. Now, look, it is
a smaller roster. You only take eighteen, so you can
take a couple of more. But let me ask you this,
what's the United States is gonna need to take more
of defense or defense in midfield or offense. They need
to take more defensive midfield if the if well, no,
but that's the thing, if you're gonna go that far

(32:19):
because right.

Speaker 3 (32:20):
Now the offensive side of things is quite strong, right
that attack is there, maybe shore up the mid a bit.
We've talked about Iran quite a bit, you and I
off off air and watching these games. But it's just
the idea of where where you're going from here is
it's a youth movement, right. It's a different style of

(32:42):
play that Hayes is bringing in and for Alex Morgan,
unfortunately it doesn't fit. The skill set is different and
like father time gets us all in terms of where
you can play. And that's not diminished that she's still
a good player, just you're now looking at the next generation,

(33:05):
the next generation of this squad is ready to go,
and I don't think you want to slow it down
from what Trinity Rodman and Sophia Smith are able to
bring you into the field and the attack because we
saw it time and again in the game against Germany tomorrow,
and be even more entertaining, perhaps if Australia is that wide.

Speaker 1 (33:26):
Open, defensively exit hot about a Fresca exit swollen dome.
The Jason Smith Show with my best friend Mike carbon
So by this time tomorrow we're talking, Yes, new golden
era of US women's soccer coming up next? What is
going to happen tomorrow when the United States men's team

(33:47):
takes on South Sudan. Will Jason Tatum play?

Speaker 2 (33:50):
No?

Speaker 1 (33:50):
Will Joelle Embiid have any good highlights?

Speaker 2 (33:53):
No?

Speaker 1 (33:53):
We'll tell you how that's gonna unfold next right here,
Jason and Mike Fox.

Speaker 2 (33:59):
Be sure to catch line editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific Fox.

Speaker 1 (34:06):
Sports Radio The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon. And sometimes we save the best for last.
I'll give you the best hot take all right that
I've saved till now. As we look, well, tysher just
pulled the music. Ow, what do we got somebody?

Speaker 3 (34:22):
And that's kind of a big deal. I mean he's
trying to think of some build up kind of music.
Now I got him to pull pull out of Tears
for Fears. That was pretty good.

Speaker 1 (34:29):
I didn't pull out. So tomorrow the United States, we'll
have the big rematch against South Sudan. Yeah, game that
Lebron had to rescue them from. Game that South Sudan
led by sixteen at one point. There's a hell of
an effort from Bluel Dang's crew right there. Let's go
with three big questions and the last one will be
my big hot take. Okay, first one is this spread

(34:53):
for tomorrow's game is twenty nine and a half of
the United States, so it's down two points from where
I saw it. Then do they cover? Do they cover
twenty nine and a half against South Sudan. Yeah, I'm
with you. I think they're pissed. And this is one
of those few times of sports where, boy, if you're pissed,
it means that you can really amp it up. This
is a team that hasn't played a lot together. There's

(35:14):
no greater motivator than well, you almost lost to South
Suit d dude, you almost became the other team in
a movie. Okay, just so you know, you were the
other guys, all right. Lebron thirty eight years old had
to rescue you from it. So I think they cover.
Does Jason Tatum play? I think he kind of has to. Yeah,
I think you have to force it in.

Speaker 3 (35:35):
It's just be based on the backlash and whatever.

Speaker 1 (35:39):
And I think that's gonna be a little bit easier
because I guarantee you look, Steve Kerse said, I told Jason,
ww's playing the next game. Yeah, so you know we'll
play if they're covering the spread. No, it's safe enough
put Jason in. No, Jason Tatum will play. He will
play in the first half at some point and come
off the bench, even if it's just for a couple
of minutes at the end of the first half to

(35:59):
give somebody rest, whatever it is. But he will play.
I have no doubt in my mind that he will play,
at least a little bit somebody because Steve Carr is
not gonna say I told Jason would play, and then
at the end he's gonna go, oh yeah, the game
went away. From me.

Speaker 3 (36:12):
Yeah, because I still disagree with anybody who was like, oh,
in those final minutes, you just got to get him
off the bench like they've trained, and like, no, I
feel disrespected.

Speaker 1 (36:21):
Hey, you get to.

Speaker 3 (36:21):
Go in for mop up duty in the final three
minutes and he will be ass king.

Speaker 1 (36:25):
And he'll play in the first to get this out
of the way. No, sure, they'll get let me get
it out of the way. He may come in earlier.
I could see him maybe coming in earlier, end of
the first quarter into the beginning of the second, like
I could say, but he will play in the first time.
But go back to the game Sunday.

Speaker 3 (36:38):
You take Kevin Durant, who we all had questions, right,
he's around, they didn't send him home. It's like, all right,
he's gonna play. And then he goes, rips off the
warm up suit, gets out there and he's having the
time of his life. I mean, this is Sergio Dip
on steroids having the time of his life. As he's
hitting shot after shot. He's getting knocked on his ass

(36:59):
and he's laughing like he's a kid once again out
on the playground. And so you're not gonna take that
out like everybody just marveled at it. When he starts
off eight for eight coming off the bench, hasn't really
done much except a couple of team workouts. At least
that's what we were told for the entire month of
ramp up, and all of a sudden, he's, yeah, you're

(37:20):
gonna Jason Tatum's gonna sit and watch.

Speaker 1 (37:23):
That's just the way it works. So if Tatum plays, yeah, right,
and and you've heard Steve curse, listen to get enough minutes.
We went through the whole thing with minutes for ten players.
Somebody won't play. He was asked, He really went down
the math. He tried to get you in a math
loop like he was a TVA. He said, I know
your next question is who's not gonna play. I'm not
gonna tell you that. I'll give you my ball prediction.

(37:44):
Doesn't play? You ready for this? Who's not gonna play tomorrow?
Jalen Bronson? No, Jay, They call him to come in
and he slays at a Halliburton. Joel embiid No, he's
a DNP. We he has been terrible, an awful. He
played eleven minutes and he just whatever reason, his style

(38:04):
of play, his health, he's not healthy. Steve Kerr is
not going to mess around. A d will start instead
of Joelles.

Speaker 3 (38:12):
This is where we call the Hey, he's hurt and
he's less than a hundred, so he's got to play
very nice. It's it's a little bit of a motivator
because what we've had for the last month is a
lot of speculation that promises were made. So Steve Kerr
has been playing good soldier and not breaking those promises
made by Grant Hill committed.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
He's he's just if you say sluggish, that's a that's
Joel Embiid's picture in the dictionary. He's just not up
to it for whatever reason. And you can play it
that way and you can save as much face with Embiid. Hey,
you're just not moving like you normally the Olympics. And
it's and it's a combination of and it's a combination
of hey, yes, we're saving you. We're also motivating you

(38:53):
if you want to play. Because you read his interviews.
What can you take away from Feba basketball? Nothing. I
don't change the way I play. It can't take anything
away from this. Like he's it's like, okay, it's one
thing to not be producing when you're a star. But
it's another thing to feel like I really don't care,
you know.

Speaker 3 (39:08):
But the bigger thing for me with him is if
you're going to keep talking about what a villion you
are and how everybody hates you, how about you embrace
it and go full in instead of the excuse making
and whininess that we've really hit. He's already he's mad
at the French who boot him before the you know
way with the nice people, blow them kisses.

Speaker 1 (39:25):
There's eleven minutes you have to take up. It's sad
and you you have between between a D and had
to buy nothing else, bam ada by guy like a
man possessed these guys. These guys can can pick it up.
And maybe it's one of those as the game goes, Hey,
but AD is gonna start. If we need Joel, we
go to him, or if it's a blow, whatever it is,
but this is going to be If these are my guys,

(39:48):
AD has been better had he deserves it at this
point and this may be the Steve Kerr message to
the team. Hey, some games you'll play, some games you won't.
If you're not good, you're not gonna play Jason Tatum
wasn't good. We didn't play. Now it's Joel Embiid, you've
not been good. I can't just play it because a reputation,
So I'll go bold. Joel Embiid does not start and
A D starts instead. See I dig that.

Speaker 3 (40:09):
I mean we can get down the starting line if
nothing else, Steve Kerr has the opportunity to really give
us myriad storylines into the next NBA season because everybody
can be pissed at him.

Speaker 1 (40:19):
Oh sure, which is well Embiid being okay, he's in
the East Celtic. That's it. Yeah, exactly, exit out about
a Fresco exit, swelling down the Jason Smith Show with
my best friend Mike Harmon coming up next to my
