Mike and I love putting this content out for you
every single night. So thanks to Rick Buker for stopping
by last hour on the show. We got more NBA
coming up in a few minutes, including a big topic
(01:12):
we had a chance to get to with him that
is starting to gain a lot of attention, well because
of the guy that's it's surrounding. You know, it's not
Lebron James, but a big breaking story out of the
NFL tonight. And I don't think anybody is really surprised
at this, because well we had heard reports that maybe
(01:33):
he wasn't the favorite guy in the world. But now apparently,
according to an athletic report, Jalen Hurts. His teammates on
the Eagles not that happy with him. They say that
he kind of does his own thing, and he goes
against the game plan that the team puts out during
the week, and he kind of just does his thing
(01:54):
on the field on Sunday, and they're really frustrated about it.
And now here are the Eagles now, so Le We're
frustrated with our quarterback and oh my goodness, what are
we gonna do? I get it right, because if you
see Jalen Hurts, he has never given you the optic
that he is anything less than focused on his brand
(02:16):
and his career. Now, part of that is being a
great quarterback, so you kind of you kind of have
no choice. But he's he's always been. I mean, you
go back to his freshman year at Alabama. He's been
concerned about his brand and and what he is and
how people feel about him and what they think. And
now we can control things. So I get it. I
understand that. And on most teams, this would be one
(02:37):
of those season defining Oh, this is gonna blow us apart.
We've been playing pretty well, but now this is gonna
rip us to shreds. Yeah, forget it. If anything, this
is gonna help them beat the Cowboys. Buy more on Sunday.
There is no team We've talked about this. There is
no team that thrives on dysfunction and controversy better than
(02:57):
the Eagles do. Nobody does. It is outstanding and it's
impressive the way that they can play games and still
win with despite the fact that maybe AJ Brown isn't
happy and Jalen Hurts isn't happy and the team doesn't
like Jalen Hurts in there, or they're mad at Nick Sirianni.
It doesn't matter whatever whatever controversy they have. The Eagles like, yeah,
(03:19):
not a big deal, man, They swim in dysfunction. Now. Look,
it's great they're playing the Cowboys on Sunday because look,
the Cowboys are like, yeah, you talk about swimming and dysfunction.
That's every day for us. Yeah, but the Cowboys swim
in it and they play. Okay, the Eagle swim and
dysfunction and they thrive. It's like, hey, we're putting dysfunction
in the pool, like we need extra chlorine. Let's put
more dysfunction in the pool. Man, That's what makes us
(03:41):
play our best. But that's the Eagles. That's how. It's
so impressive how they do it. And it doesn't make
sense because, like I said, any other team would just say,
forget it, we're cooked, we're falling apart now and the
coach has to get fired with the quarterback's got to
get traded. No, no, no, man. They love this. This
is how the Eagle do themselves. And the worst things get,
(04:02):
the bigger they win. It doesn't look you thought a
couple of weeks ago, oh man, this stuff with him
and and aj Brown off, forget him, this is gonna
tear the team apart. No, no, they just keep winning
and winning bigger. They had the biggest win of the
year against the Lions on Sunday where they're their defense
looked like it was a super Bowl caliber defense that
we're just gonna roll our way to win the title again.
Like this is how it is. I have no concerns.
(04:24):
This is nothing for the Eagles. Off anything. They'll beat
the Cowboys by thirty because of this. Oh you think
my teammate don't like me because I don't throw the football. Okay,
that's fine. I'm gonna I'm gonna do what they want
and he'll throw for three hundred yards and three touchdowns
and the Eagles will win forty five to fourteen. It's
gonna be Look at the Eagles outside, this is not
a big deal. The Eagles swim in controversy. They thrive
(04:46):
in it. They're awesome. This makes me even more confident
they'll beat the Cowboys on Sunday. I wish you would
have walked up to the podium. Hey, career best one
hundred and seven quarterback rating. We've only turned the bl
all over as a team four times or eight and two.
I'm out everybody to do right.
Speaker 3 (05:08):
I mean, sixteen touchdowns against one pick for his career,
including playoffs, you had fifty seven and twenty nine. I mean,
come on, you just go on down the line. You're
not getting the same level of supporting the run game
you're dealing with, as we talked with Jason Cole a
little bit earlier in the show, a change in leadership.
So you know, things that might have been festering in
(05:30):
the past usually had someone step to the front and say, hey,
shut up.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
And get back to work and make it.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Make it flow for hurts on the offensive end, man,
how many guys have walked through there that have been
in charge of that offense.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
It's just since he's been there in six years.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
Coordinators, quarterback coaches, whatever, it's a different message. It's a
different leader in that regard every year as well. So
moderate tweaks along the way. Man, When we look at
where he is right now, he's two touchdowns off of
his pace of last year he played fifteen games, he
was eighteen and five. Right now he's sixteen and one
(06:10):
touchdown to interception ratio, adding another six touchdowns on the ground. Now,
I mean there's a decided drop off. I mean he's
not at double digit oh no. But with sakwuon Barkley
regression that we would have expected a little bit of
the downfield passing games. Guys were never happy, all right,
(06:32):
hey and throw the ball enough.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
I mean, how many attempts.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Last year three sixty one, his career high was five
thirty eight, and twenty twenty three, it's when he had
twenty three touchdowns. Guess what, he threw fifteen interceptions. Hey,
don't do that anymore.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Okay, now, look, this is the best part of this story. Okay,
if you talk about the Eagles thriving in controversy, and
this is the best part because this story when it
came out today from the athletic Jalen Hurts was asked
about it at his weekly press conference. And here's Hurts
his response to what he thinks about reports that he
(07:07):
does his own thing on game day and doesn't pay
attention to the game plan and what they practice on
all week. This is Jalen Hurts his response.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
I guess I get a lot of attention when things
are going well and when things are not going so well,
and so I never run away from holding myself accountable.
And I think, you know, I think that's exactly what
I've taken the approach of doing.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
He says, I'm not surprised by anything. This is kind
of the nature of the position. Okay, First things first,
does Jalen Hurts sound like he gives a crap at
all about what anybody thinks about him or this. He
does not.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
There's only one sentence he could have given us that
would have made this better.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
He yeah, but it's funny because I don't know him.
I mean, he does not give a crap at all. Right,
when you say, look, it's energy in nature the position.
I do my best, taking the things I can try
to improve all they said, Right, he doesn't give a crap.
And you know how, you know how you know this
because normally when a quarterback is faced and giving the story, Hey,
(08:10):
your teammates are frustrated with you. They don't like you
because they say you're freelancing and you're not following the
game plan. What is the report? What is it? What
does every other quarterback in the league say. I don't
know where this story came from. I have the respect
of my teammates. I'm not gonna address something like this.
This is not part of this. You're just trying to
tear us apart. I get mad at the media for
(08:32):
bringing this up. I go all these things. What does
Jaylor Hurt say? Yeah, I'm not surprised by anything. Yeah, Like,
I'm not gonna try to deny it. I'm not gonna
tell yeah, I'm just gonna say, yeah, not surprised by it. Okay,
I was expecting him to go, Yeah, who'd you talk
to Gainwell, it was say quantity, say anything? What about
aj Aj? Who are the guys to tell me he
was out there?
Speaker 5 (08:50):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, yeah him. Yeah. I don't throw the ball at
him at all. Yeah, Yeah, that's awesome. Yeah. Yeah, I'll
tell you what Shipley thinks he's gonna get the ball
out of the backfield when he's in for like three
snaps a game. No, I'm not thro the ball to
him at all. Bet it's awesome, Like really, that's kind
of the level that Jalen Hurts is at. Yeah. Not
only do I not care? Yeah, I'm not even gonna
sit here and refute it. I'm not even gonna try
to be the do the big teammate thing. And I
(09:12):
don't know where this is, and I love my teammates
and all this, none of that. Notice there was also
none of the Eagles players saying, wait a minute, wait
a minute, Jalen's our guy. You know, he's not their
favorite guy. But but you can see that it doesn't
matter that sometimes leadership is overrated. Sometimes relationships are overrated.
You can win in dysfunction. Not everybody can, but some
teams can. And you know the Eagles can. They just
(09:34):
won the Super Bowl last year, and you know, Jalen
hurt suddenly he didn't become a different guy. You know,
he's been this guy. We told he's been this guy
throughout his career. But he doesn't care and he's not
refuting it. I mean, this is this is just again
my hat's off to the Eagles who can win with
this kind of dysfunction. Man, Because for anybody who says, hey,
what were those Cowboys teams of the nineties, Like what
(09:55):
were the Lakers teams the late nineties early two thousands, like,
because you know, I I'm young and I have you know,
I'm only thirty years old, right, I don't remember that stuff.
This is what it was like every single day, and
they won multiple championships because they were just that talented
and when it came time to play, they played well
enough to win. Now that they shut everything out, not
(10:17):
that they just say and what we know, we put
all the crap aside. No, sometimes it creeps into the
game because you know, hey, Jalen hurts freelancing, as he
was accused of doing last week. He and aj Brown
are going off script times and he's calling his own
plays or throwing the ball wherever he wants to. At
the end, No, it creeps into the game, but it
doesn't matter because the roster is so ridiculously talented and
(10:37):
they do enough, and they know when to throw the
hammer down and they win. This is what it was
like watching the Lakers when you knew Shaq and Kobe
couldn't stand each other, and still they won championships, when
the when the Cowboys every single day was something and
it was okay, it's it's Irvin em It and Aikman
and and Jimmy and Barry Switzer and Jerry Jones, when
(10:58):
he was just Jerry Jones, the owner, going I just
want to be a part of this. I just want
to make sure people understand that I bought the team
and I'm only forty seven years old. Okay, people think
that I'm seventy now. I'm only forty seven when I
bought the team in the nineties, So that's all I
am for forty seven years old. This is what it
was like, and if anything, this is still kind of
(11:18):
a light version. This is kind of like a Lakers
Cowboys light version because those teams that won, they won
multiple championships, so the conversation about them was constant. Here's
the Eagles in kind of a you would say, like
a late a Ladder Day dynasty because they've been to
the Super Bowl and loss. They've been to the super
(11:38):
Bowl and won. They could be going back again to
win again. You know, they won you know before Jalen
Hurts was here, you know, with a different group. I mean,
so it's really it's kind of a light version of
those things. But that's really what it's like, man. And
certain teams, very special ones can do it. And that's
like the Eagles, and that's what they can. And Jalen
Hurts is a guy, he's standing at the top going, yeah, whatever,
(12:00):
I do what I want and look at my record.
So questions, we got any more questions? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (12:05):
I Mean, they don't always win with style. There's some
oddities and mixed in. Go back to that Green Bay game,
the touchdown that was scored when the defensive back fell down,
I mean, the freelancing at the end last week's game
against Detroit. If you're gonna go in if you love
defensive football, we got something for you. If you wanted
a bunch of points. Guess what it was another primetime
(12:26):
game that you were throwing your mug at the television.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
But all of it to say, year to year in
the NFL, you've got so much turnover that you know,
having any kind of sustained success, it's so rare.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
We talk about organizations and operating year to year with
without having that big drop off. How many how many
are there? Five seven maybe that we can enumerate and
just say, okay, you trust the direction. It may get
a little weird for a minute, but overall the path
(13:02):
between the GM the head coach, because I mean, how
many head coaches we talked about a Monday night when
Pete Carroll's graphic was up there. He's the fifth guy
with the Raiders since twenty twenty, and he was joined
by three other teams that have the same circumstances. So
it's not like you get continuity. So if you've got
a formula, no matter how weird, it is, to get
(13:24):
you to the winner circle, to the top of the charge, right.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
The T shirt is everything. You've got all of it
in our business.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
How many successful teams and duos where they're either in
the music side, the morning talk side, the news side,
and certainly sports.
Speaker 1 (13:39):
That they didn't talk to each other unless the light
was on. Hey did you go to his Berta? But no, no,
I don't love you, man, I never did. I had
to live with you and now I might die with
you and that is not.
Speaker 3 (13:52):
Cool exactly, but that's exactly it for Jalen Hurts, He's
going the only thing he needed to.
Speaker 1 (14:00):
Say, either Yeah, what are you gonna do? Or it's
Philly yo. I mean, yeah, what do you want?
Speaker 4 (14:07):
Man?
Speaker 1 (14:07):
What do you want? There's always gonna be noise. We win.
Sometimes guys get fed. Sometimes they don't. I get it.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
Guys are gonna be mad and in their fields if
they don't get enough targets, enough touches. You know, it's
something we've been talking about with Lebron James and his return.
How do the ancillary players fill the gap if their
minutes are down and their touches are down and the
responsibilities changed greatly?
Speaker 1 (14:32):
Same thing here in Philadelphia. Man Aj Brown's tried to
laugh and off.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
I'm sure he's seething, but if he gets another ring,
he goes into that next level.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Of guys, even if his stats are muted. Telling you,
I'll take the Eagles forty five fourteen on Sunday against
the Cowboy minus three and a half forty seven and
a half year total. As I wrote it out on
my grid earlier this morning. Oh yeah, I get give.
I don't care. It doesn't matter. He can be playing
the game in Jerry Joe Owes his backyard. I'll tell
(15:01):
you I'll take Philadelphia in this one. I mean like,
it's that doesn't matter, doesn't matter what you're saying.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Quinton, Quintin Williams and all those guys that showed up
on the defense, they were only going to be good against,
you know, the Raiders.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Yeah, I mean again, it was it was the Raiders
and this is the Eagles. It was the Raiders, Okay,
just so you know, it was the little step up
in class.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
So like claimed a horse, he beat a bunch of
two thousand dollar claimers. What's the strace ten thousand dollar claimers?
Probably not gonna go as easy as it. Exit up
about a Fresco exit swelling dome.
Speaker 1 (15:33):
Jason Smith, Mike Harbon Coming up next, We've got another
big NFL story coming your Way, plus an NBA story

little harder. It's gonna be the best after show podcast

There you go, over Promising, and remember you could see
on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen Over Promised with
Cavino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or
wherever you get your podcasts, Fox.
Speaker 1 (17:06):
Sports Radio, The Jason Smith Show with my best friend
Mike Harmon. We have that big quarterback story out of
the NFL in a couple of minutes, but a story
that's just starting to gain a lot of traction that's
only going to get bigger because now there's a face
(17:26):
for it, right. Stories always get on that fast track
when you can put a face to something. Someone's decided
I'm going to stand up and be the poster guy
for this, right. So it was just, you know, everybody's
still thinking about the Steve Kerr statement about the NBA
season being too long, and look We've talked about it
(17:47):
being too long for years. You can make it fifty
five game regular season and still have the same kind
of season, right, the last twenty five games. The teams
that tank tank, the teams that are playing well play well,
and we get the playoffs. It's too long, But it's
too long now because players can't simply play eighty two games.
Here the players have gotten bigger and stronger. Ninety four
(18:09):
feet is really difficult for players to stay healthy on
with what you're asking to go up and down the court.
No sport has evolved more over the course of the
past thirty years in the NBA, and now when you're
in a situation where you have to tell players you
got to play a minimum number of games to win
an award, you got to play sixty five games, Like
sixty five games, that's a lot for a guy. Now
(18:31):
you gotta start playing sixty five games. And then you're
saying it's okay missing a quarter of the season, right,
So guys sit out because they're heard, or they're dinged up,
or they just need rest. Well. Steve Kerr again has
been the one to say, Hey, the NBA season's too long. Well,
what happened tonight. Well, he kind of put his money
where his mouth was because the Warriors played the Heat
(18:51):
tonight and the Heat played the end of a six game,
nine day trip. Right, So this is a really a
lot of games in not a lot of days. And
this was what sparked, is the season's too long. They
didn't play tonight without Steph Curry, without Jimmy Butler, without
Draymond Green, without Jonathan Kaminga, no Chris Mullen, no Mitch Richmond,
(19:12):
and none of them played tonight.
Speaker 6 (19:14):
Right.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
Al Horford doesn't play back to backs, and he played
against Orlando last night. He was also out. So they
lost by fourteen to the Heat tonight. And now this
is where the NBA's got to get involved because we
have seen players sitting games out. We have seen players
sit out nationally televised games, and the NBA, because Adam
(19:35):
Silver is afraid to do anything, everybody just shrugs. Now, yeah,
my guy's not gonna play. But it's gonna be a
thing because of television contracts and sitting out. Now, you're
gonna get a big rash of players who are saying, well,
apparently it's okay to sit out and Steve Kerr is
taken the arrows for us on this and that's a
pretty cool thing from the stand up for players. We've
(19:58):
been headed this way for a while, Mike, and where
we know the NBA season too long. We've talked about
it for a while. But now that Steve Kurr has
decided to jump to the front of this and right
after saying that sits five of his guys on the
second night of back to backs, it's gonna be It's
not gonna be easy. It'll be one of those slog
type of agreements. But within the next three to five years,
(20:21):
you're gonna see something that we've never seen before. You're
gonna see a league contract games and the NBA will
go from eighty two games a year to about seventy
five ish games a year. They'll get rid of all
the back to backs, and they will extract other things
from the players. Do you know, make sure they're playing
in a certain number of games and you're not sitting
games out. But the NBA really has no choice because
(20:44):
look at the way the league is going. Players are
sitting out, star players are sitting out tons of games.
Star players are getting hurt in the postseason because the
NBA postseason is way too long. You play way too
many games in a shortened period of time. The NBA
has to do something to address this. Yes, some teams
are gonna be upset because they're gonna lose gait money.
They're gonna but there will be some sort of make good.
(21:06):
I don't think anybody's gonna be happy. But in the end,
you're gonna have to do this and and and the
league is gonna have to cut back from eighty two
and like I said, it's not gonna be so like
ten games is too much, but you gotta at least
get rid of all the back to backs. In these
six game and nine night situations. It just don't make sense, right.
I mean, the the year can still be as long
as it is. Like the length of the year I
(21:28):
think is still okay. I mean we used to start
beginning in November and now we're starting, you know, towards
the end of October. But okay, I mean I'm fine
with that. So you're the length of time is okay.
But man, you really gotta do something because these this
is just it's not trending in a way where players
are ever gonna play more games. And for Adam Silver,
you know that if anything, they're gonna continue to play
(21:49):
less and less. We let ten teams in the playoffs.
Teams no longer care if they get in the playoffs.
If I'm a one top six team or if I'm
in the playing round, doesn't matter anymore, right, it makes
no We let everybody in. I'm okay sending out these games.
In the end, we just have to be a five
hundred team and we're gonna make the playoffs at some
at some level, if we're a little bit over five hundred,
(22:09):
we're top six seed. Right, That's that's always going to
be at. This is not going to ever trend back
towards oh, players are gonna play more games. It's like
it's in Bajor League Baseball. Starting pitchers are not going
to pitch more. They're not gonna start you know, these
guys know seven eight innings again, that's never happening, right,
If anything, it's gonna be less. The NBA's got to
get in front of this and figure something else out.
(22:30):
And again, next three to five years we get to
the CBA, you get the things. They will cut it
back from eighty two to about seventy five.
Speaker 3 (22:36):
Yeah, it'll be curious to see, you know, what what
the repercussions are for Steve Kerr. Obviously he's gonna stand
up for his guys. And when you're talking about where
you are with a lot of rosters, and particularly go
go what they have with the Warriors. You've got the
elder Statesman, right, Steph Curry in search of the new
shoe deal. You got Draymond Green when he's not fighting
(22:57):
with fans, he's a guy that's been in.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
The league a long long time.
Speaker 3 (23:01):
So you got guys on the upper end of the
age spectrum, and then you've got the other end on
the younger side, and guys that are trying to steal
some minutes. Just for giggles, I went through last year's
top one hundred scoring by average. Right, scoring average down
to about eleven point six points per game and requires
(23:24):
a little more finesse. But do you realize only five
guys out of your top one hundred scorers actually played
in every game last year, Five out of the top
one hundred five. And then you got guys that are
in the early you know, early to mid seventies. Couple
of guys that got to eighty games. But the point
being that every every game and thinking guys are gonna
(23:48):
be able to run every night. It's just fool hardy
on the base premise. Now, obviously with all the different
TV deals, you're serving a lot of different executive boards
and company profits.
Speaker 1 (24:01):
Right. We've talked about it a lot, joked about it
yesterday with Steve Desager. He's like, yeah, the Lakers just
tipped off. Oh you know, they had that other game
in a half hour or forty minutes or whatever, that
other one will tip off on Peacock. It was like
a twelve or something Pacific time when that game finally tipped.
But just that point, it's like you're trying to serve
(24:22):
all these different people that are at the table, are
at the proverbial trough, so something's got to give. You
got three years until you can opt out of the CBA,
and then there's one more year before it would expire altogether.
So you got to figure out how you keep feeding
the machine, keeping guys healthy. You know, the pace of
(24:43):
play and everything that Adam or i should say Rob
Manford wishes he could keep established and not get things
bogged down. Adam Silver on some level is wishing that
perhaps you could go back a little bit to the
days of the eight. Sure guys would be beaten and
bruised in a different way, but perhaps we wouldn't have
(25:04):
these same athletic use injuries that we see and some
of these, you know, calf injuries that are becoming an issue,
the groin injuries. I mean, the calf injury is this
year's torn labram. Remember when we had that epidemic in baseball?
What that guy have that torn libram?
Speaker 6 (25:23):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (25:24):
Yeah, the labor cl.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
And then it became you know, all of those. But
the NBA right now, you're missing an awful lot of
star power and we're fifteen games into the season.
Speaker 1 (25:33):
Exit out bout a Fresco exit, Swallen Dome, Jason Smith,
Mike Harmon, I mean again, Dow Steve Kerr is the
face of this and so you know it's gonna get
a lot of run. He's gonna talk about it, but yeah,
we're gonna get that. Get ready for that seventy five
game regular See.
Speaker 3 (25:45):
That one tenured guy who who will tell you about anything,
And what are they gonna do find him?
Speaker 1 (25:50):
I mean, come on, guys made a lot of money.
I'm sure they're gonna look into him for tonight. You
rested five players tonight. They were all hurt after they
all play last He's gonna get five, There's no question
about it. They all got hurt all at the end
of the game last night. They all went out to
dinner and they all got hurt. Just like that. Hockey players.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
You went after Jack Hughes getting hurt in Chicago.
Speaker 1 (26:10):
Look at you. I mean they all went up, they
all got I mean, really, Steve Kurr, this is gonna
be a thing, man, It's it's gonna be a thing,
telling you we're it's starting now. It's gonna mushroom and
get bigger. And Adam Silver is gonna have to do
the thing he wants to release, and that has actually
get involved in a story and the guy's suddenly developed sciatica. Meanwhile,
speaking of injury, we get to Aaron Rodgers where a
(26:34):
story today the headline seems sort of benign, but you
look past it and I'll tell you right now, Uh,
this is a really big deal. Rogers is it's not
sure if he's gonna play this week against the Bears. Uh.
You know he got hurt last week and missed the
end of the game. And look, it didn't matter because
(26:54):
Mason Rudolph was able to come in and lead the
Steelers on a couple of big drives up there without
Jalen Warren two and and they won. So even though
he's got a fraction in his left wrist, he's still
not ruled out for this week. He still could play.
He's going to try to practice on Thursday. Now. The
timeline though, it's not clear. But the one thing that
Rogers said is that to play against the Bears, he's
(27:16):
got to be able to protect himself. And you would think, okay, well,
that sounds right. He says, it's a safety thing, not
about can I play through pain. It's a safety thing.
I want to be protect myself from further injury. So okay,
you see this story and go, yeah, all right, I
get that. Oh no, no, this is a blinking red light.
Do not play Aaron Rodgers on Sunday, because I'll tell
(27:39):
you what, the last three years, it's a different Aaron Rodgers.
Right the year he got hurt with the Jets, obviously
he carried the flag out and that was it. And
the last year when he came back, he was a
different quarterback. He is someone who is skittish in the pocket,
throwing the ball off his back foot, throwing it short,
and throwing the ball early. That's his biggest thing. Watch
(28:01):
that there's at least one down every one out of
every four downs the Steelers have the football, Aaron Rodgers
gives a play away by throwing the ball away early
before receivers turned around because the rush is coming at
him and he's not standing in for a hit anymore.
He's done with he's done getting hit. So what does
he do? He throws the football early. How many times
(28:23):
you have to watch dk Metcalf run his pattern and
be in the middle of the pattern and the ball
hit the ground in front of him or behind him
before he's even turned around. Right, It's a free down
that Rogers gives to the other team once out of
every four plays because he doesn't want to get hit.
He's not gonna stand in there. You can't throw it
downfield like he used to. But he no longer wants
to even standing to make a throw, So I'm just
(28:45):
gonna get rid of it early. And that's a killer
for the Steelers offense. And we told you this is
how it was gonna go congratulations everybody you picked up
on the Aaron Rodgers stinks. We told you months ago.
Middle of the season, that's what's gonna happen. That's why
we call the show ahead of the curve. But like
for the first few weeks of the season, Rogers will
be Finalll have his moments. But when the games start,
the season starts to get more of a grind and
(29:06):
he starts getting hit a lot, he is going to
really struggle. And we're gonna see Will Howard playing big
games in December and watching Rogers the last years. This
is what it's been with the with the Steelers the
last couple of weeks. I'm throwing the ball early, I'm
not standing in the pass rush is getting to me.
And so if that's the case on a regular week
for Rogers, like a regular week, you see that out
(29:28):
of Rodgers, even games the Steelers have won where he's
throwing the football. Well, if that's a regular week for Rodgers,
what's it gonna be in a week where he says
I gotta be able to protect myself, It's gonna be
even worse. Forget it, man, Mason, give me the Mason.
Rudolph experience on Sunday, because this is not gonna go well.
And all you have to do is pull Aaron Rodgers
(29:48):
from the game, and you're gonna have to talk about, oh,
his injury flared up, whatever it was. He's got to
you gotta cover up a whole bunch of stuff, Mason
Rudolph experience. Man, Not that I'm a Mason Rudolph guy
for the long term, but he's shown that he's one
of the the best backups in the NFL. He could
come in and play okay for a couple of weeks,
but this, forget it, man. Rogers normally doesn't want to
stand in there for a throw if he's thinking about
(30:09):
protecting himself because that, yeah, forget it's gonna be really,
really ugly. Man. He should not play on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
You know what's interesting at this point, he's going through
some of the advanced stats. The nerd I am you know,
Justin Herbert has been blitzed one hundred and seventeen times.
By way of contrast, Aaron Rodgers immobile unable to push
the ball downfield has only been blitzed sixty one times.
Speaker 1 (30:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
Yeah, Meanwhile, Hurries currently Caleb Williams leads the NFL at
forty seven. Aaron Rodgers has been hurried only twenty times.
That ties him for fifteenth with Josh Allen and Daniel Jones.
Speaker 1 (30:48):
At this point. He has been knocked down twenty one
times to this point, which is a full thirty seven
thirty seven, right justin Herbert, Yeah, exactly, Pat mahomes Ad fifty,
go on down the line. In terms of getting rid
of the football, all you gotta do is get close
to him, you know. And it's not even a real
(31:10):
hard He's got to get close to it. I'm throwing
the football. Wow, dude, you threw that really long, you know,
or he'll throw it long, but noem my favorite when
he throws behind the receiver, when it's like what are
you doing? But like he'll throw it long with throw
it over somebody's head within the first ten yards of
the line of scrimmage. It's not trending that way. It's not.
And when when when you saw the statement you read
the statement earlier tonight about the glowing things that Mike
(31:31):
Tomlin had to say about Will Howard. That's gonna be
another big preseason Bowl prediction we made that Will Howard's
gonna be playing big games. We're on We're We're on
a bold prediction preseason heater on this show man, We're
on a heater. I'll tell you Will Howard playing big
games in December sounds like it could happen. Sounds like
Mike Tomlin's excited about Will Howard.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Yeah, this one came out of the press conference. He
was asked about Will Howard and had his going we'll see,
We'll see where the week goes. Will Howard's been with
us the whole time, and so he's a sharp guy.
I like the general trajectory of his work. Certainly in
the position that he's in. He doesn't get a lot.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
Of quote Steelers reps.
Speaker 5 (32:10):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (32:11):
But you know, Mike, Mike Tomlins had himself a week
man that that quote he had it was all of.
Speaker 1 (32:15):
Like six seconds down.
Speaker 3 (32:17):
Uh with the Jalen Ramsey and uh Jamar Chase, I
have no message. If someone spits in your face, would
comes natural. Yeah, I'll tell you, Baud, watch out for this.
The decline of Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 1 (32:33):
You've seen it the last couple of weeks, and and
you're stuck right now if you're the Steelers, right because
you're okay, well we're we're we can still enjoy a
season where we win the division, maybe right because we're
on the top. Even though we stink and we're no good,
We're still lead the division by a game. Is that
gonna still continue for us? But you're stuck and and
(32:58):
you know, I don't want Aaron Rodgers to end his
career like Russell Wilson's going to because the Giants aren't
putting him back out on the field. They jumped him
right to Jameis Winston last week. That's how much that's
feel about him. I don't want two.
Speaker 3 (33:11):
And a half point favorites in this one, Jason forty
five and a half.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
Does Aaron Rodgers still own well, you know he wants
to bless. Anytime you play against a team you're the
owner of, you kind of want to have a good
showing again. You want to talk about the smile and chess,
your cat grin and wide eyes made Aaron Rodgers talking
about the Bears and love of the history and the
rivalry and all that stuff, and someone should just raise
(33:37):
their hand. It was no rivalry you guys want every
damn year. I mean, it would feel wrong for him
to finish his career like Russell Wilson, which is going
to be in a big puffy parka on the sideline
with his hand warmers. But that's what canos or something now,
So yeah, well you gotta fight. He's got a lot
of free time now. I have to worry about pesky
things like the playbook. He's fine, he doesn't have to
(33:57):
worry about that now. But I feel that could be
how it goes. Rogers Man really could.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
Hey, why wasn't he part of the group that went
to Raw the other night? Fight with Dirty Dom?
Speaker 1 (34:07):
Where the hell is ross? You should have stepped in
front of Cam Scataboos who doesn't get knocked over? And
he made he hurts his ankle even more. You got
to be the guy who step in front of that Russ.
That's what we're paying you to do. I do like,
and I'm doing the so very liberally. The interpretation of
camp Scattaboy more or.
Speaker 3 (34:24):
Less said kiss my ass to everybody that criticized it.
Speaker 1 (34:28):
So I got you, Cam, I got you exit out
a bout a fresca exit swollen dub, Jason Smith, Mike Harmon,
we got more NFL on the way. We are celebrating
the biggest story of the day the best way we
know how. That's next right here, Jason and Mike Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Jason Smith
Show with Mike Harmon weekdays at ten pm Eastern, seven
pm Pacific, Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
The Jason Smith Show with My best friend Mike Harmon,
ending tonight the best way we know how, as we
celebrate the biggest NFL story of the day, Shadoor Sanders
will make his NFL debut as a starter for the
Browns on Sunday. Dylan Gabriel in concussion protocol. So now
(35:19):
we have Shador Sanders and there is no softer start
than the Raiders. So we are three fifths of the
way to my big bull prediction. I said, five, guys,
we'll start a quarterback for the Browns this year. Even
gave you the order. Now things get dicey after this,
but said it was Flaco to Gabriel to Sanders. Now
(35:40):
things get a little weird, But okay, we gave you
the order. Three fifths of the way here Week twelve,
I'm feeling really good. Now we're gonna sweat it out
a little bit. Yeah, because you're gonna get that fifth guy.
I'll start like week seventeen, where hey, last game, guys
are dinged up. We don't care. We're not ruining our
draft position. We'll start somebody who's on the roster. Now
(36:01):
we signed him two days before Christmas. He's gonna start
our final game. But we'll get to five. Mike Carmon,
I feel great about this.
Speaker 3 (36:08):
What's weird is if you go on any of the
depth charts as they currently stand, all you got.
Speaker 1 (36:13):
Are those two guys. Yeah, that's it's it.
Speaker 3 (36:16):
So now it's it giant question mark right, it's healed
underpants gnomes from South Park, Step one, still underpants, step two,
question mark, step three profit Right now, we're just waiting
for quarterbacks four and five to show themselves.
Speaker 1 (36:32):
So to celebrate this, we're gonna play the forty two
Quarterbacks game, because Senor Sanders will be the forty second
quarterback to start for the Browns since they came back
into the league in nineteen ninety nine. So here's the game.
I give you a quarterback. You tell me if he
started a game for the Browns sometime in the last
twenty six years. Playing as myself, Mike harmon Alex Tischer
(36:55):
lead to lap, who's in for Justin Frossburg? Are you ready?
Let's go, let's do it. Okay, okay. Did Jimmy Clawson
ever start a game for the Browns? Fighting? Yeah? Yes, okay, shirt,
(37:18):
local guy, Okay, a local boy, local boy. Uh well,
ty shirt?
Speaker 2 (37:24):
What do you think I'm gonna say?
Speaker 1 (37:25):
No?
Speaker 2 (37:26):
All right, aso schmacking looty.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
Former fighting Irish quarterback Jimmy Clawson did, in fact not
started for the Cleveland Browns. Ravens. What else? No, Panthers?
Was a bear? Of course? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah, Bears. No,
I think that was his three he was. He's only
(37:53):
a league for Yeah, he was only the league for
a few years. All right, Well traveled in a short
amount of time. Case Keenum did Case Keenum start a
game for the Browns?
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Come on, Jason, of course.
Speaker 1 (38:07):
Okay, of course, of course, of course, of course, yes,
you're the captain. Of course, of course you're the captain. Yes, yes,
yes he did, all right, lead it up. Yes, I'm
pretty sure Case Keenum did in fact start a game
for the Cleveland Browns. Very nice, very nice. He started
(38:28):
two games in twenty twenty one. He actually went two
to zero in those games. How about that that you
did stop? You did not stop? Yes, no, you know
you did not? You did it?
Speaker 2 (38:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (38:42):
Did Chris Wanke ever start a game wank for the
Cleveland Browns Chris Wank who came into the league as
a thirty year old rookie. Did Chris Wank ever start
a game for the Browns?
Speaker 3 (38:55):
Chris Wanky, who gets a lot of run right now
because of the age.
Speaker 1 (38:59):
Of old time shuck mm hmm. I'm gonna say no.
Speaker 2 (39:04):
Okay, I can't even remember who he did.
Speaker 6 (39:08):
Play for.
Speaker 1 (39:13):
Carolina for sure.
Speaker 6 (39:14):
Okay, Oh yeah, I'm gonna say no.
Speaker 1 (39:19):
I want to say Wanky won his first start for
Carolina and then they lost fifteen in a row to
end the season. I want to say that was that
was Chris Wanky his first year. I really think that happened,
all right, Tysher, What do you think, oh man, Chris Wanky,
Chris Wanky, Chris, You've got to I'm gonna say yes,
(39:43):
Chris Wanky the final game of his NFL career, he
started against the Browns. Ever started for the Browns. Chris
Wankey did not.
Speaker 3 (39:57):
Now I'm obsessed with the game Star eleven touchdowns, nineteen interceptions.
Speaker 1 (40:03):
Yeah, not only fourteen record one in fourteen Okay, yeah,
I think they lost. I think they lost their leg
and he missed a couple of games. I think they
lost their last fifteen. They were one and oh and
then they lost fifteen.
Speaker 3 (40:14):
Yeah, that's it. He averaged thirty six pass attempts at game.
Did broad Jack showed up?
Speaker 1 (40:24):
Did broadcaster dan Orlovsky ever start a game for the
Cleveland Browns? I don't think so. Okay, tight shirt dan Orlovsky.
Speaker 2 (40:44):
Sorry Mike, but he absolutely did.
Speaker 4 (40:48):
Okay, I mean.
Speaker 1 (40:51):
I I can only think of him as a lion.
Speaker 5 (40:54):
Uh what who else did he play for?
Speaker 1 (40:56):
As rich?
Speaker 5 (41:00):
I will say, Yeah, I can, I can, I can
picture it.
Speaker 1 (41:05):
You see, you can see Dan Rolovski. Dani Rolowski played
for one, two, three four teams in his NFL career,
including one team twice, and one of them was, in
fact not the Cleveland There are for them this year,
(41:26):
there is your forty two quarterbacks game. Had a great game.
I like that. Hey. The best part is if we
want to, we can play it tomorrow the next night.
We got lots of guys that gous a lot of
guys shah, No, you pulled up some legends for sure.
From Mike, I'm chasing my buddy Ben Mallins, Next Fox
