s R. You're listening to the Best of the Odd
Couple with Chris Rush and Rod Harker. There are a
few things that really are dominating the NFL right now.
Tom Brady and Willie resigned with the Patriots, threw up
in my mouth. And Dak Prescott and what's going to

(00:43):
happen with him and the Cowboys. Well, none other than
the legendary Emmetts Smith has weighed in former Cowboy great lead,
the all time leading rusher in the NFL history, three
times Super Bowl champion, all with the Cowboys, of course,
and he's weighed in and here's what he said that

(01:05):
has to understand and maybe take another perspective. The perspective
may not be all the money that you haveet It
may be how much of the money you will live
in the table. Because the Cowboys is a marketable organization
and so you got all that extra money. So if
you are the face of the franchise, would it not
instead of taking thirty five, would you take twenty eight?

(01:25):
They leave something for a Maori and pick up the
other thirty five through endorsements. All right? Can I'm gonna
let you go first because that was on the Adam
Lefco Show. And of course the first thing that comes
to mind, Rob if you didn't do this, Emmett stopping.

(01:45):
I mean, Emmett, are you what possibly are you talking about?
First of all, how dare you talk about another man's
money and what he should do? Why didn't you Why
did you stall missed the first two games of the
season when you held out from the Cowboys And the
only reason you got paid is because they started the
season ohing to Chris and then Jerry Jones paid them.

(02:08):
You didn't get your money? How dare you until Dak?
I'm not a Dak guy, but I will always Chris,
you know this. I will always be against asking people
to take a discount. What is Tom Brady bellyaching about
right now? That he did the team hometown discount and
now he wants to be respected and giving his money.
Don't tell him what he should do. I don't believe

(02:30):
in it. Oh well, you can make it up in endorsements.
You make it up in endorsements. How dare you? Why
can't I get the market value for what people are
getting paid in the league? Chris, you throw out the
numbers all the time, watch the accept last. It's for you,
the Dallas Cowboys, to figure it out. It ain't for
me the player. You gotta figure out your budget. You

(02:53):
need to cut and trim some stuff. You gotta realize
you got a quarterback. I get it. He was in
the fourth route and you didn't think he was gonna
be this, but he is this. He's the face of
the franchise. He took your quarterback. If you're going forward
with him, he gotta get paid. Emma Smith should be
ashamed of himself talking about that he should take Chris
twenty eight million? I just what. Well, I agree with

(03:18):
you mainly on the fact that Emmett is not the
right messenger for this because he didn't do this, and
he had a stack team too, He had other teammates
to be paid, you know what I mean. So because
he didn't do it, he took, you know, as much
as he could get and actually held out on his

(03:39):
teammates so he could get his money. And they were
owing two that year. I thought they wound up winning
the Super Bowl Chris that year and they and the
only reason he got sighed and they lost. I remember
they lost the second game and all of a sudden,
Jerry decided, Okay, this is enough. And had they been
too And though I don't even know if Emmett would
have got paid, I don't know. For that's I say

(04:01):
that he's not the right messenger that said, and I
do agree with you as well, that you know the
team needs to figure some of this stuff out. Okay,
but I won't be grudge a player for taking every
last dollar. But I also am not against players giving

(04:24):
discounts for the sake of the team. The fact is
it is a salary cap league, and the fact is
you can't pay everybody what you may want to pay everybody. Now,
I think Emmett talking about going from thirty five million
down to twenty eight that's steep, that's steep. That's a

(04:44):
heck of a pay cut to ask somebody to take.
But if I'm a player, let's say I could get
thirty five or that's my market value of thirty five million.
But if I take thirty two, that will help us
resign Amari Cooper, help us, you know, bring back some

(05:05):
of the other players that we need. And I'm shown
how indeed it will work, and how if I sign
for thirty five it can't. We can't bring back your man, Amari,
as much as we would like to, we can't, or
we gotta cut an offensive lineman or whatever it may be.
And that in cases like that, my personal view, I'm

(05:27):
not the one that has to have every last dollar.
I like money like everybody else. I understand we need
money like everybody else, but especially in needs situations, You're
talking about such a large amount of money that making
thirty two million a year versus thirty five million a

(05:48):
year doesn't change your lifestyle one iota. But but here's
their's one and and just to it really just becomes
a pride thing. But I gotta I just got to
get as much I want. Okay, So when here's the
thing you talk you always talk about Tom Brady, with
Tom Brady have been better off doing it as he did,

(06:10):
making less money and winning six Super Bowls or having
taken every last dime he could maybe you know, he
would have made I don't know, fifty million dollars more
than he already had. But here's but he always got
two super Bowls. I wouldn't say he's better off doing

(06:31):
it the way he did. What did you What did
people complained about with Tom Brady this year? He didn't
have any players. He'd been taking a cut for twenty years.
How come they they named the players they went out
and got for him? Chris other than Randy Moss was
and he was on his last legs in Oakland. Nobody
thought he could play other than that, who did they
go out? They win? They didn't do that. But that's

(06:52):
a that's also a unique situation. There are other situations
where teams do go out and spend the money. Now,
I'll give you that it's not all on the player.
If I'm gonna take a pay cut, you better use
the money to go get so and so and resign.
That's what I may say. But I'm but I think
you're of the mentality that, under no conditions, if a

(07:15):
Mari's gotta go, screw a Mari. If if Zeke can't,
if he can't the highest contract, highest contract for running
Rob I'm making an example. I'm just using an example
to say how I picture your your philosophy. Okay, if
if my philosophy is not I gotta take every last

(07:37):
dime and screw the other star players on the team
because if they can't get any money because I'm getting
it all, so be it. My mentality is I'll take
a little less if it's gonna help us resign him
and him, which puts us in a better position to
win the super Bowl. Now, I'm not saying I'm going
from thirty million to twenty million, or I'm going from

(08:00):
you know, thirty five to twenty five or anything like that.
Something reasonable. I'll take a little bit of a pay
cut to help out my teammates if it's going to
help us be a better team. I think your philosophy
is I gotta get as much as I can and
everybody else screw them. I just gotta get every last dime.

(08:20):
That's that's not that's not my responsibility. That's why they
have general managers. That's what I got it. But that's
for them to figure out. That ain't for me. And
plus I'm not giving up for you that I'm not
giving it. Ain't got nothing to do with it does
how it do? I know it doesn't. It doesn't matter

(08:40):
that's it does. For them to do it, that's what
in the figure it out. It don't matter to me.
You're not coming to me and asking me to take
You don't care about your team. I know. I only
care about I want my value. I want my I
want the last dime that's available to me. Let them
figure it out. They're the ownership. They want to manage
the way they got to figure it out to it's

(09:02):
to weaken your offensive line. You're happy with that, then
you won't win. You can't so you you won't win.
That's my point. I'm not again. I want my money.
I want a sizeable income, but I'm not gonna take
every last dime if it's gonna cut down our ability
to win, and you seem to be saying you will,

(09:26):
I would take what what I'm supposed to get, regardless
of what that's for the team to figure out that
it happens. I'm not dodging. I just told you both ways.
I just told you I'm going to get every dime
that's available to me. I don't care about the team, right,
don't go you don't care. I don't care about No,

(09:48):
that's not what I said. Half, that's not what I'm
saying size and that's not what I said. Who doesn't
care about winning? You don't care. I'm not giving them
a team a discount. It ain't about the didn't down
the Cowboys over five your billion dollars or whatever they're worth,
and they want me to take less money. I'm not
doing it. You figure it out, Jerry Jones. It's you.
It's your business. You figure out how you pay all

(10:11):
the stars and make everybody happy. That's not my job.
Roy Parker, you are a void. You're you're you're living
in a fantasy. I'm not. Yes, you are because the
world they now if we can change the CBA. Now,
if you want to argue that, I'm with you. If
you want to say the players need to go in
change the CBA, get rid of the salary cap so

(10:33):
then you can really pay guys whatever they're worth, I'm
all with you on that. But right now there's a
salary cap, so your little fantasy world about I'm gonna
get every last dollar I can. But then you don't
want to address the fact that it might cut into
your winning set. You're not addressing the reels. I'm not

(10:55):
doing it. If Okay, so you don't care about winning.
I do care about winning. You don't care about giving
note to hometown, different hometown. I'm not giving it. So
if if they if you were in Dak Prescott's shoes
and they said, look, we can give you thirty five
million and we gotta cut two offensive linemen, that ain't
what it's gonna be. Chris that the week price we

(11:17):
gotta going price for a starting quarterback at playing at
his caliber and winning as many games. It's thirty five
to thirty seven. I'm not taking thirty two. Could you
haven't handled your business the right way, and you haven't
decided how you're gonna everybody. If it's if it cuts
down your offensive line, you gave us difference between it's

(11:38):
the difference between having a chance to win the super
Bowl and struggling to make the playoffs. You're cool with that.
You're cool with that. I'm cool with it. I want
to get paid, all right, That's that's that's your mentality.
I disagree totally. Um, I'm about getting paid too, but
I'm also about winning. And if it's explained to me

(12:01):
and it's legit and we gotta change. I'm gonna lose
some of my best players because instead of making thirty
five million, I gotta make thirty two million. I'm with it.
I'm with it, and I take it further. If it
was you and we're winning, and I gotta take a
little less so I can keep you. I'm not just

(12:23):
going from every last time I can getting screw Rob Parker.
I'm gonna drive Chris to the airport if they don't
have money for him. I'm sorry, I get it. That's fine.
That's our different philosophies in life. I don't live money.
I need money, but I don't need money. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris
Brussar then Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern, four

(12:46):
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
All right, Rob, the NFL, we know they're in bargaining
with the Players Association and some of the proposals are
starting to leak out. Roy, Gee, can you give us
a little bit of it? That's right. According to Adam Schefter,
there's three key points that the owners are pushing. Number

(13:06):
one being in an expanded playoff field, where now seven
teams from each conference make it, with only the top
seed getting a bias out of the top two seeds,
the other one being a seventeen game regular season, and
the third point being the preseason being cut from four
games to three games. This is just sheer greed on

(13:27):
the part of the owners. Bulls eye right there, right,
and they share nothing. I don't want to hear anything
else about player safety because if it was about player safety,
you wouldn't be pushing them to play more games. It
doesn't even make any sense. The league is set up fine,
what right, it's just the money grab. Let's go back

(13:48):
to the networks and say we got we gonna add
another regular season game and then these three playoff games
give us more money. That's all it is. And you've
made this point for a while and I agree wholeheartedly
with you. The only way the players should even consider
giving into this is if they get either well improved
healthcare or guaranteed contract one or the other. That's the

(14:11):
only way we move on this one. Here's your time,
because the owners won't back down on this, Chris. They
wanted desperately, So this is your turn to stand up
to the owners and demand that they do what the
other leagues do well right, that they do it, and
there's no reason. And Jamal Adams it was a tweet.

(14:31):
Rob G has it. But but this is the problem,
Chris heresten to listen to this tweet. So this is
jamalud Of quote tweeting Adam Schefter. He says, more regular
season games plus more playoff games equals more money for
the leagues and the player everybody wins. They don't get it, No,
they don't, they don't. Here's my thing, it seems, and
I say this to r G during the break, this

(14:53):
looks like to me, the concession that the owners are
willing to give for the seventeenth game is okay, we'll
throw in an extra playoff team or in each conference.
And that's more money, right because you get playoff money
if you make it. So that's what they're selling to
the players. Why are the players buying it, if indeed
they are, that's ridiculous. And I and I'm robbed. I'm

(15:15):
like this. I don't I like the playoff expansion in baseball.
I don't. I don't think you need it at all.
In football, it is absolutely terrific. The way it is
six teams in each conference. That's plenty. I get it,
fourteen out of thirty two, making it it's still a

(15:36):
much lower percentage qualifying for the postseason than the other leagues.
Certain you know, the NBA and NHL, But why expand
it's you already every year seem to have a team,
you know, with a poor record in the playoffs, So
why are we gonna throw another team in there that
that has very little chance or really even maybe doesn't

(15:57):
deserve to get into the playoffs. I don't get either.
I just have a hard time, and I think it's
smart on the owner's part that they're selling that they're
seeing if the players would bite, and Jamal Adams apparently
as bite. And that's the other thing too, you're negotiating
whatnot players shouldn't even be commenting. I'm serious. If you
got the Union, Chris, one voice, one voice, Rob, you

(16:21):
got a quick step, real quick in the last ten years,
if this new format was in place, there would be
fifteen teams with nine wins or less in the playoffs.
See that's what I'm saying. You don't want to look
the NFL not They may never belittle the regular season
because it's so few games, but you don't even want
to get near that. Fox Sports Radio has the best

of Adam Rank, his latest column for NFL dot com,
he ranked as He's off to do the top most
exciting players in all of sports, not just in football,

(17:03):
not just in basketball, baseball, or whatever. He ranked the
most exciting athletes in all of sports, and at number
one on his list, playoff Lebron, not just Lebron James.
Playoff Lebron. Now, I've got Lebron on my list. I

(17:26):
think playoff Lebron if we want to separate him, I
do think playoff Lebron would be the most exciting NBA
player now, just for a game. I go with Zion,
just because the buzz around him and you want to
see what this young kid can still can do in
the league. Okay, but overall, with all the storylines, all

(17:48):
the history, all the is he the wash King? Can
he beat the Clippers? Can he win another ring? Kenny
and Niets? In some people's minds, catch Jordan? Can he
be come the all time leading scorer top five and
assists all of the storylines. The iconic figure that Lebron
James is. I'm down with Playoff Lebron as the most

(18:13):
exciting NBA player but all of sports, no way. I
got Lamar Jackson based on last year. Now, I don't
know if how sustainable it is, but based on what
he did last season, I don't see how in the
world you can't say Lamar Jackson is the most exciting
athlete in sports, and I would have a close second.

(18:34):
Patrick Mahomes, and I know what he does is sustainable.
Where you stand on this route, Now, let me get
this trunk. It's this name Adam Rank or Adam Reeks
because that calumn that he wrote Reeks, what are you
talking about? I mean, Chris, I don't know about you.
But let me let me break down playoff Lebron, as
they call him. Playoff Lebron is the guy who's three

(18:57):
and nine, three and six in the NBA finals, nine
finals appear. That's fine, but he loses more than he wins.
Playoff Lebron is the guy who gives up the basketball
to weaker, lesser players in Big mos No for miss
free drugs, all right, and so I'm not buying that.
I've seen Lebron meltdown. What playoff Lebron? Am I missing

(19:18):
where he made that big shot? It was Kyriee who
made the big shot to seal the deal on the
three to one come back against the Warriors. Which the
most iconic block in NBA history? Is it the block
or the basket? I don't know. Do you win with
by blocks or do you win with up by points? Both?
I'm asking you which because if he doesn't block it,
they get a layoff. Okay, But I'm just which one is?

(19:38):
Which one changes the whole? Which one is more important?
They're both important. The basket is huge, don't get me wrong. Okay,
you gotta make it. They both. I think they both
have forty one points, Lebron and Kyrie. I might be wrong.
All I'm saying this is, uh, I don't know what
Lebron playoff Lebron he's talking about, because I'm not buying it.
Lebron's had a great start to this regular regular season,

(20:00):
and I know he's, you know, calmed down a little
bit Chris of late, but I'm just not buying that.
I'm with I don't know how the playoff Lebron could
be the best on this list. Well, I think a
big part of it, as I said, is the story
are the storylines? I look, I don't think Lebron and
his style of play is the most exciting or the

(20:23):
most fun to watch. Now. I like watching him play
a guy the sides of Carl Malone running the point
somewhat like Magic Johnson, I mean, and scoring twenty five
twenty seven points to boot. So he's fun to watch,
no question. But I don't think he's the most exciting
player in the league. But when you throw in the storylines,
that's what I think. We'll talk to him in a

(20:45):
little while, but I think that's a part of what
Adam Rank is talking about. And Rob, no doubt, he's
lost six finals, but let's go through a most of them.
He wasn't favorite, so I get it, and then you know,
I got my Michael Jordan ahead of him. And I'm saying,
sometimes when you're not favorite, you gotta overcome. It can't

(21:06):
always be laid out on a silver platter for you.
But some of Lebron, like his first finals, I don't
think anybody holds that against him. You might because he
ripped through your Detroit piss town columns. Could have had
he won that, would you not count it? How do
you do he won it? Again? I counted as a
law Okay, I don't hold it against him. I'm not.

(21:28):
All I'm saying is it doesn't count if he would
have won. No, anybody ever said it doesn't count all
the lebron I'm just saying, like when they say, well,
you can't hold it a verse one, he shouldn't have
been there. I'm just it's like the Fab five, right
and at Michigan they got to the finals two years
in a row, and everybody like acts like that, like
they got all the way to the championship game, why

(21:49):
couldn't they win? Like like like, no, rob, what that
is is everything isn't black and white every like Like,
let's say the the who had a the Bron the Bengals.
Let's say that they do draft Joe Burrow and they
make the playoffs. They get beat in the first round,
but they make the playoffs. Would that not be a

(22:11):
successful season even though they didn't win anything? And get that?
But that's not what people are saying. That's what I'm saying.
But Okay, but Lebron he also lost to mind he
had to he put together the dream team and they lost.
They they only won two or four. I'll give you
that right that that's where those four years in Miami
he had the most talented team in the league. And

(22:32):
and do you remember even and Chris they won. I'm
not taking it away, but remember go back and relive
the end of that San Antonio series when when I
was there, you saw it. Lebron had a couple of
bad turnovers at the end of that game, and if
it wasn't for ray Allen, that would have been another
bad one. And nobody remembers how poorly he played at

(22:52):
the end of that game. Well, he got big, but
he hit some big shots to help him come back.
And then in game seven he was huge. But I'm
just saying, in that game, you're right, he made some turnovers,
but he also made some huge shots for him in
that game. If ray y'all doesn't hit that shot, there's
a different dialogue going on about Lebron James. Yeah, but
there's a lot of ifs. I mean in everybody, I'm

(23:12):
just saying, I'm not into the playoff. If there's no
fansom foul call? Uh was it Bill Lambier against Kareem
Then maybe the Pistons got a three peep? You know
What's like, there's always ifs in in sports history, but
you just gotta go by the result. That's why I
don't take Kawhi's title from him. Last year. There's a

(23:33):
ton of ifs. What if Kevin Durant has stayed healthy?
What if Clay Thompson had stayed health? That doesn't matter.
I don't take it away from him. Yea. My only
point is I don't know the uh Lebron playoff? Playoff Lebron.
I know they said the same thing, playoff Rondo, that
just means you stink during the right play. But that's

(23:55):
what does that playoff Rondo? What does that mean? Well,
he does play better in the play he plays well
in the how did he play left playoffs? Old? Wait
a minute, they didn't make the playoffs. Actually, when he
was in New Orleans, he played tremendously and that's why
Anthony Davis finally got a victory in the playoffs. You
remember that, and then you know Rondo, Remember when he

(24:15):
was in Boston he would put up ridiculous triple doubles
in the playoffs. I mean forty four points and a
triple double like Rondo who doesn't even score, can't shoot,
So that that's where it comes from. You just like
to hate. I don't like you're looking for something to
hate me. I'm just the most honest guy on sports
talk radio. That's all it is. Really, Yes, that's one

(24:41):
heard anybody refer to the hit boat as the most
honest brother. That's all I ever On Twitter, I hear
Instagram they loved me because of my honest what two
people I said day it was more than one. No, Lebron.
I mean, look, I'm with you ultimately, especially when you're
a guy in the gold conversation. Ultimately, you gotta get

(25:05):
it done. And he has lost twice as many finals
as he's been in. But you also gotta realize he
does have great success in the player, even if it's
just getting there. And you know, he dominated the East.
He had other teams shook and shaken in the Eastern Conference,

(25:26):
and he's been good even some finals where he's lost
twenty fifteen. Kyrie's out, Kevin loves out, and he's got
the Golden State Warriors down to one and he was
playing so well that saw him, not me, a few
thought he should have been the MVP. That's playoff, Lebron.
What about the next year? You always rip Golden State

(25:49):
for losing a three one lead that, But what about
the brother that took it from him? Chum, You gotta
give him. You can't have it both way. Yes, they
should have won it, but he took it too. They
didn't just fall out and hand it to the Calves.

(26:10):
He went and took it, and obviously he got help
from from his robbing Kyrie. But I'm just saying, NAT's playoff.
Lebron fifty one points Game one against the Warriors, and
he finds George Hill for a layoup at the end
of the game that Hill gets filed on it misses
the free throw. That's playoff, Lebron, know it, It It ain't

(26:32):
because Lebron Lebron should have kept the ball and not
give it to George Hill, Benny Hill, or whoever he
wanted to give the ball up to. And it wasn't
a layup because he got fouled, So it wasn't. But
it wasn't. Literally it wasn't. It wasn't youn not get
fouled on the layer and then he missed one or
two free throws because he ain't ready, and that's Lebron's fault.

(26:52):
Help because he was an eighty percent foul shoot. Not
in the finals. He ain't no eighty percent free throw shooter, Chris.
He might be one of the regular season when it
doesn't matter. If I'm Lebron James and I'm that guy,
I'm not giving up the ball to know, George Hill, Sorry,
why did why did? Why did Michael Jordan give it up?
Talking about curR and John Paxson. No, you're you're saying
that that guy that you're the vague definition of that

(27:15):
guy always has to take the last shot, the biggest
That's not what I said. I just don't want to
give Jordan. I don't want to always take the last.
Michael Jordan used to tell those guys be ready, it's
coming to you, and those guys didn't. He wasn't even
involved in the play when Paxon hit the big shot
I'm talking about. Jordan got it in the backcourt, Frank
Johnson six two on him, passed it the Scottie Pippen

(27:37):
a half court and never think about even involved. Didn't
you give it the ball of Steve Kerr. Steve Curry did,
but I'm talking about the Packson. What about that Steve
Kerr I'm talking about he was the pie standard when
Packson hit the shot. So I'm just saying, you can't
have it, have it both ways. That's I ken the
difference to the most honest brother. The difference is Lebron

(27:58):
James losers game by giving the ball other people. Michael
never lost the game. If Michael would have given up
the ball Chris and b and he was doing no,
I would say that, but then you could question it.
If he was two and four in the finals instead
of six and old, then Michael would be under scrutiny
for that. That's all I'm saying. For giving up the

(28:19):
ball to an open teammate when you're covered. Yep, No,
he wouldn't because Michael Jordan lived in a different era
when there was no debate shows on TV. There was
very little national twenty four seven sports talk shows on radio.
So we only remember the great moments. We don't remember
we screwed. Lebra got scrutinized what two weeks ago for

(28:42):
a Tuesday night game and wherever that was. I mean,
it's it's Jordan never got that type of scrutiny, and
Jordan never named himself the king, self proclaimed king. So
when you do that and put that out there, people
gonna people are gonna look at you and and judge you.
And you know that, Chris, some of it is some

(29:03):
of it is Lebron, though some of it is him.
You can't ask for all the attention and then act
like you can't understand why people are criticizing and you
are talking about you. You put it out there. No. Look,
first of all, I don't think he's criticized because he
he has the King James nickname. I think he'd be
scrutinized regardless because he's the face of the NBA right

(29:25):
and has been for nearly twenty years. So I think
that's a big part of it. And I'm not saying
he shouldn't get scrutiny. I'm just saying, let's be fair.
We can't kill him for passing it to a teammate
who misses a shot. You can't wait the differences. Michael
Jordan's teammates made the shots. That's it. I just think
it's open for the big shot in the in the

(29:48):
playoffs or the final, but he won enough. He didn't
lose as much as Lebron has lost. That's all I'm saying.
When a guy has lost as much as Lebron, the
most by any former MVP, regular season MVP in the
history of the league, then you could look at look
at some of the situations and ask why are these
things happen? And why is he passing up? Does he
not want to make free throws? Why he has Steph

(30:10):
Curry in front of him and he instead he's gonna
pass the ball to somebody else instead of taking Steph
Curry to the whole when Steph can't defend him. That's
I think those are fair questions. There's Lebron a great
mid range shooter, because that's what he was looking at,
a mid range jumped shot. He couldn't he couldn't take
Steph Curry right there at the file line. There was

(30:31):
congestion in the lanes. There were players in there, right,
You say to yourself, there were players in there, so
he got filed. He don't want to take free throws.
