(00:54):
NFL MVP All Pro running back, joining us at the
bottom of the hour.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
That'll be a lot of fun talking to Sean.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
And we've got the opening of college football happening in
the day. Is Colorado with Dion Sanders is taking on
North Dakota State and what should be a really entertaining
and good game.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
But let's start with the NFL.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
There's so much happening, and we know we've Brandon Ayuk
just signed an extension with the Niners, but Dak Prescott
not so fortunate, and he's seeking that with the Cowboys.

Speaker 3 (01:33):
They've been talking but to no avail thus far.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
And Jerry Jones has said not recently that he looks
like they probably won't get it done before the season,
and Dak Prescott has responded. So Rob Gi kind of
summarized this for so we have the proper context before
we talk about some of these quotes.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Sure, so, as soon as the CD LAMB deal was done,
similar to the Brand and Ayuk deal, you guys said, hey,
what's next with Trent Williams. Well, as soon as CD
was done, it's hey, what's next with Dak? So Jerry
Jones has been in the headlines again in the last
forty eight hours talking about it, and earlier on Thursday,
Jerry was asked once again how does this situation with

(02:16):
CD Lamb impact Dak Prescott's feature with the team, And
throughout his answer, one thing he says is quote you
could easily say if you haven't seen it by now,
then you haven't seen it. Well, when you look at
a situation, you also got away, Okay, what are the
consequences of the other side of the coin. And so
when Dak's situation right now, for me, from my mirror,

(02:39):
has more to do with our situation than it does
with the merits of Dak being the quarterback of the
Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
So it's a big.

Speaker 4 (02:46):
Word salad, all right, It's a lot of google exactly.
So later on, a couple hours later, Dak Prescott meets
with the media and a little scrum there in the
locker room, and they ask him about his situation.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
They tell him what Jerry Jones as it said.

Speaker 4 (03:01):
Dak Prescott replies, that's the business and the nature of
this game that we play. So yeah, I mean, I
stopped honestly listening to the things that he says to
the media a long time ago. It doesn't really hold
any weight with me.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
I'm gonna say this, from.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
That quote from Dak Prescott sounds to me like he's
fed up with the circus. And I mean, I think
it's an insult to Jerry Jones. Now I don't I
haven't seen there's no video of how he said it.
I would imagine he said it somewhat laughingly, you know,

(03:47):
kind of Hey, you know, I've learned not to pay
attention to what he's saying. You know, it doesn't hold word,
you know, that kind of thing. But you could have
easily just gone to politically correct route. Dak's done that
for the bulk of his career. For him to come
out and say, man, please, I don't listen to that dude,

(04:07):
you know, like if you if you when you were
on with Rob and you said something about me, and
I seriously somebody told me later and I seriously was like, man, please,
I don't pay attention to what he says about me, Like,
and I'm serious that to me, that's insulting.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
You heard, but you know what I'm saying, I.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Think this is an insult to Jerry Jones and the
fact that his quarterback is saying that. Now, maybe I'm
taking it too seriously, but I think that is something.
And I'm not gonna say he's totally done with the Cowboys,
But I've been singing this tune for years that Jerry
Jones has created a circus like atmosphere that is not

(04:52):
the best for.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Winning the big games.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
And it almost sounds like to me in this quote
that Dak Prescott feel it was the same way and
he's like, man, enough, I'm kind of done with this stuff.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
So and you're absolutely right. Right.

Speaker 5 (05:08):
It's like when you go to your family union and
your old uncle.

Speaker 3 (05:15):
Right.

Speaker 5 (05:15):
He always got something to say, right right, whether it
be the girl you dating, you bring her over something,
whoever made the castle role, whatever it is, he got
something to say. And whoever's with you, that same girl
you're you're dating. They could be like, oh my god,
I don't worry about that. He crazy, right, like he

(05:38):
that's uncle Bud, he you know, he know Vietnam. He crazy, right,
He say anything, nobody pays a kick, right Like. So
it's one of those things where you're literally like, hey, bro,
it's this is what Jerry does. He inserts himself and

(06:02):
he takes control of the situation and holds the whole
situation in narrative.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
He holds it hostage.

Speaker 5 (06:10):
Right, Jerry is gonna say it no matter how what
he is, the brand, it's all about him, so on
and so forth. The only owner that has weekly radio show,
TV show, the whole nine yards. He talks to the
to the media more than the players and the coaches. Right,
it's the only team like that. Most teams you don't
even see them. You barely see the owner, not until
they holding the trophy, right, you barely even see them

(06:34):
walking in the halls. You don't, you don't, you don't
see him. So it's one of those situations where Dak
is like, look, I'm focusing on the season. I'm gonna
go out here and do what I now. If I
were Dak Prescott, I will play out this season. I said, Look,
when when Thursday comes around and the season starts, I
don't want to talk about it.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
I don't want to talk about it. For him. Sixty million.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
And the per year before the season starts, do you
think that the.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
Number hit wants.

Speaker 1 (07:06):
Well, there's some school of thought out there that if
he waits until next you know.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
He's gonna he'll go beyond it.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
He will go beyond sixty. Okay, so money goes up,
that's the question I'm throwing the Now.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
Look remember right now the highest per year is what
fifty five million? Yes, so sixty It could be the
junk next summer. Yep, you know what I mean. Like
it doesn't I mean ten million?

Speaker 5 (07:32):
Now, the CAP's gonna go up to the money going up,
So that won't be that won't be the ceiling.

Speaker 1 (07:37):
So so if let's say hypothetically they offer him sixty
and you know, before the season, because I I don't
rule out the possibility of this getting done before the
season starts.

Speaker 3 (07:48):
Do you think that should take it? At this point?
I would say no?

Speaker 5 (07:56):
Wow.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
And the reason is the things you just said right.

Speaker 5 (08:02):
Like that he might be tired of certain it's you
don't want to have to do this, right you don't
want to remember he held out before they want to
pay him, and he got heard they paid him any Like,
it's a lot going on, and there's a situation where
if Dak Prescott being number two in the MVP race

(08:22):
last year, three years, twelve and five, twelve and five,
twelve and five, if the situation happens where he's able
to attack the open market, what what is that annually
gonna look like?

Speaker 3 (08:40):
Right?

Speaker 5 (08:40):
So, are you willing to bet on you? Right now?
It's a lot? You're taking a chance? What is he
making forty five right now? So this is forty five
with no security?

Speaker 3 (08:51):
Right? So are you willing paid? Yeah? But there's different
types of injuries.

Speaker 5 (08:56):
But the fact that he did get hurt last time
is still got paid. Bodswell for him, not Dallas, because if.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
He cousins get paid, the.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
Money's out there. He's Dak Prescott is good enough for someone.
You don't think the Raiders, Oh no, you don't think
the Saints. You know, the Steelers.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
Steelers right now, the way it's looking, they gonna want
a quarterback in these one of these. I mean, there's
a there's a bevy of teams, the Giants. Did you
still in the same division?

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Right?

Speaker 2 (09:25):
You know?

Speaker 1 (09:26):
So they But let me ask you this though, and
because to me this is important and part of the
crux of the matter, this quote. And you talked about it.
The silly uncle at the family view which I totally.

Speaker 5 (09:39):
Get, crazy young one, not the silly the silly one
doing jokes in magic, the crazy one say anything.

Speaker 6 (09:45):
But.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
My crazy uncle at the family reunion.

Speaker 1 (09:51):
When I say, oh, please, don't, don't nobody listen to him.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
It's not really an insult.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
It's kind of you know what I mean, It's kind
of like, oh, that's just uncle, you know, Patty want the.

Speaker 3 (10:00):
What's the insult to your uncle? What you mean, don't
listen to me? Everybody everybody's but look, that's what I mean.
It isn't it Okay, but that's exactly what I mean, Chris.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
It's not it's not me having ill feelings toward him.

Speaker 3 (10:15):
Look, this is you don't you don't repect him.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
Sounds to me like an insult to Jerry, and that
Dak is like kind of like, at least i'm reading it.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
I'm tired of the circus. Yes, I'm tired of this.
That's exactly what it is.

Speaker 1 (10:32):
And you talked about the Raiders, and I know they've
had their issues, certainly the Steelers, what the Giants, these
are football first franchise line up won't be the circus.

Speaker 5 (10:44):
Right line up Davante Adams and be like, I'll give
you all some money back.

Speaker 3 (10:47):
And they got a defense, they got a receiver.

Speaker 5 (10:50):
Jerry knows this. Jerry not dumb, right. I don't know
what he's trying to get done here. But what I'm
saying is Dak has leverage. If the season starts before
something gets done next Thursday, seven days, I'm keeping my leverage.
We're gonna rock We're gonna rock out. I'm gonna try
to get us to the super Bowl and win this thing.

(11:12):
And guess what if he does that and he says, deuces, right,
he controls. He's that you know what I'm saying, Right,
anything can happen.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
We don't. We don't know, and that is a huge if. Right.

Speaker 5 (11:27):
But what I'm saying though, even if they go to
the playoffs and they fumble out of the playoffs second
round whatever that is, like they normally do, right, you
don't think the Raiders will sign up for a divisional
round playoff.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
I think even if he does, yes, they would, right,
Like I was gonna say, even if he doesn't get
he could have a down year and maybe even missing.

Speaker 5 (11:50):
The market is still gonna be crazy, because it's gonna
be crazy.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Are that's what they're looking for.

Speaker 1 (11:55):
And they've been without a court and that's the thing
Dallas has to worry about.

Speaker 3 (12:00):
These teams out there have been without.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
A quarterback for a decade or whatever, and they know
the value of a guy, even though he's not, you know,
a top five quarterback, they know his value, yes, and
Dallas has to be careful of that because franchise quarterbacks
don't grow on trees.

Speaker 3 (12:20):
And so that's gonna be the interesting thing.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
But you mentioned Dak maybe leading the Cowboys to the
super Bowl, even if it was just for sake of conversation.
We're gonna get into that because there was an article
where was that Rob g was at the athletic the Athletic,
We're gonna get they had some great I guess insights
from people around the league, agents, around agents, NFL agents,

(12:46):
and so we're gonna get into that next. But one
of them was Dak possibly leading him to the super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
That's next. Keep it locked, Chris and e from the
Odd Couple.

Speaker 1 (13:47):
Yeah, all right, it's the Couple on eight TV theme
song Thursday and a big night in college football. Colorado
up seven to three on North Dakota State. So far,
both teams had the ball, both teams scored, so we'll
keep you updated on that. We're live, of course from
the tie rack dot com studios, and we want to

(14:08):
thank rapid Radios, the official communication device of Fox Sports Radio.

(14:31):
free shipping. All right, We mentioned this article in The
Athletic where they talk to thirty one NFL agents and
just some really interesting comments from some of these agents.
We'll talk a lot about this throughout the show, but
rob g give us the summary of the article and
what they said in particular about Dak Prescott.

Speaker 3 (14:53):
Sure.

Speaker 4 (14:53):
So, it's part of their annual survey of agents, and
they covered a myriad of topics, you know, best front office,
worst front office, so on and so forth. One of
the questions that they had for the agents was if
we can expect Dak to re sign with the Cowboys
before the start of the twenty twenty five season. We
don't assume he's not gonna sign before started this season.
They're hopeful then that he'll re sign after its free

(15:16):
agency after the season.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
The consensus seemed to be.

Speaker 4 (15:21):
Yes, with one caveat, and that being that Dak needs
to win in the postseason before Jerry gives him that money.
One agent said, quote, pay Dak, make him the game's
highest paid quarterback if he helps the Cowboys reach or
win the Super Bowl.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
Here's the thing we just talked about.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
It ef he gonna get paid whether they reached the
super Bowl or not. Look at all that god, Jordan
Love hasn't reached the Super Bowl yet. Trevor Lawrence hasn't
reached the Super Bowl yet. Joe Burrows reached one, but
he hasn't won one. Justin Herbert shoot one playoff game
in four years and lost that one in dramatic fashion.

(16:04):
I might add, like, I get what they're saying, and
I'm not sure on this situation, Ephan, but I wonder
if Jerry Jones, and he's eluded, you know, little hints
here and there, you could try to read between the lines,
Like he said, Look, there's a school of thought out
there that.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
Hey, if he had it, we'd have seen it already.

Speaker 1 (16:27):
Right, I'm paraphrasing, but I wonder if Jerry does wonder
what can Dak Prescott get them to the promised land,
so to speak? And maybe this year, maybe he's offering
Dak lowmuch. Maybe he's lowballing it, you know, and maybe
he's kind of like, let me see what this guy
can do one more time, because so far, all he's

(16:49):
shown is that he can lose in the playoffs, not win.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
And so I I just.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
Don't think it's necessary for that for Dak to get
paid somewhere, even if it's not in Dallas.

Speaker 5 (17:01):
Yeah, I don't think so. And for Jerry Jones, in
terms of how he feels and what he's talking about,
is you got to remember the quarterback prior to Dak
Prescott was Tony Romo. They're on similar paths. Yep, right,
put up a bunch of numbers, win some regular season games,

(17:21):
but the reality of the situation is never won the
big one. Right, never won a play I mean how
many in all those years when Tony won maybe two
playoff games? I think maybe that one or two. So
it's kind of like, Okay, I've seen this ride before.
Yeah right, am I going to get on and strap

(17:44):
on this ride for five more years? I've seen this ride,
but I can be persuaded you bring it quickly.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
Tony Romo two and four was his playoff record, so
he only now Dak's two and five. But the point
is Tony was a very celebrated quarterback.

Speaker 5 (18:02):
I mean, it had two playoff victories. So career, dude,
are you what's the definition of insanity?

Speaker 3 (18:07):
Right? Right?

Speaker 5 (18:09):
Are you going to get on that ride and go
around and round and round again?

Speaker 3 (18:14):
Or do you need to see? Hey?

Speaker 5 (18:15):
Man, if I'm gonna give you sixty plus a million
a year, brother, you gotta get me into a at
least an NFC championship game.

Speaker 3 (18:24):
And I don't blame him. I don't blame him because
look at the quarterbacks. I mean, Brock Purdy's beaten Dak
Jordan Love.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
Yeah, I mean what we're talking about to make the
playoffs in fifty years, and they have been kind of
cartoonish losses the way they been. Ezekiel Elliott at center
a Dak you know, slide running out the clock and
then of course just getting blasted by Green Bay and people,
you know, people try to get if Daka passed almost

(19:02):
on all the defense didn't do nothing. Man, he threw
two first half interceptions. I'm not fooled by the stat
padding in the second hand.

Speaker 3 (19:09):
No, no, not at all.

Speaker 5 (19:12):
And so as an owner who's about to make give
someone the most lucrative deal right in nflp am, I
like ooh, like, look, yes, we know he's a good quarterback.
He can get us to a certain point, but can
he get us over that point? Can we get to
prompt I'm running He's running out of time, right, Jerry

(19:36):
Jones is running out of time. So are you hitching
your wagon? Because if they give him the contract, he
gonna be the guy for the next five years.

Speaker 3 (19:42):
That's just what it's gonna.

Speaker 5 (19:43):
Be, right, right, are you hitching your wagon to another
good quarterback with mediocre playoff record, because that's what it's
all about.

Speaker 1 (19:56):
And remember, Jerry also has said recently that you know,
if we signed Dak, he's not going to have the
pieces around him that he's had.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
He's not gonna be there because he's just gonna be
making too much money, gonna get the gonna sign Michael Parsons.

Speaker 1 (20:13):
But they they they got to sign everybody, but they
got to sign the sign everybody.

Speaker 3 (20:21):
Let me throw this at you.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
Would you be willing because I do think some people,
Now brock Perty may just be special, right, but I
do think there are people looking at the Niners and
saying and looking at maybe some of these other teams
to see and c J.

Speaker 3 (20:36):
Stroud is great, we know, but.

Speaker 1 (20:39):
My point is, are they looking at some of these
teams he from and saying, you know what if we
get some great skilled players and then we put in
a rookie quarterback on his rookie scale, so he's not
making money and he you know, you gotta be able
to play to some level.

Speaker 3 (20:58):
But do you think if you were running the CA,
would you be.

Speaker 1 (21:01):
Willing to at least try that route and say let's
put in a rookie quarterback. Maybe they thought it could
have been Trey Lance before the five interceptions. But you
know what I'm saying, Like, put in a guy and
we think the other people can kind of raise him
to another level.

Speaker 5 (21:16):
Well, of course you have to take that into account
when you're dedicating that amount of money to one individual
player and that player isn't uh Patrick Mahomes, right, Josh Allen, Josh,
not even Josh, said Patrick Mahomes, because he's the one
who's like, Yo, get on my back, do it, no

(21:36):
matter whatever happens.

Speaker 3 (21:38):
I got you. Well, let me run.

Speaker 1 (21:39):
They rob g is in my ear because we got
Sean Alexander coming up.

Our next guest, former NFL MVP and All Pro running
back Sean Alexander Shawan.

Speaker 6 (22:04):
How are you, man, my brother?

Speaker 9 (22:06):
How you doing?

Speaker 1 (22:08):
I'm great here, I'm great. It's always good to have
you on, man. We appreciate the time and you are here.
We'll get into some football, some of the current stuff
but right now you're here promoting the Shawn Alexander Freshman
of the Year Award and that the honor goes to
the top true freshman or even redshirt freshman in college football.

Speaker 3 (22:31):
The Hot thirty seven.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
That was the number you wore playing The Hot thirty
seven candidates were revealed today and semi finalists will be
released in late October, finalists late November. The winner chosen
right before Christmas. And some of the winners, I mean,
we all know him now from the NFL. Trevor Lawrence,
Kenneth Gainwell, Will Anderson, Junior, Rock Bowers, Drake May. We

(22:55):
could go on and on, but tell us about this
award award And is it strictly.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Like the best freshman?

Speaker 1 (23:04):
Do you look at grays, do you look at character
anything like that?

Speaker 3 (23:07):
Or is it just what you do on the grid iron?

Speaker 6 (23:10):
Oh?

Speaker 9 (23:10):
Man, it's it's a little bit of It's got four characteristics,
you know. Number one, it's talent. The first thing we
do is we turn that film on and that guy's like, yo,
why is he not not on my team? You know,
that's the first thing is talent.

Speaker 6 (23:24):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (23:24):
You know, I almost said bamba, but I didn't want
to be too biased. But road time Christ you know
how we wrote.

Speaker 3 (23:34):
Over there.

Speaker 9 (23:38):
But the second thing is character. You know when they
when they picked when the former Right Association and the
Naxville Club, when they picked it to be named after me,
they knew I was young and that they wanted they
wanted to be a person that was that played football,
that had a really successful freshman year, successful college and
pro career. But they also knew since I was young,

(23:59):
that I could be to pour back into these guys
and then also at the same time that these guys
would turn the turds that I would that would actually
damage my own name.

Speaker 4 (24:08):
And so.

Speaker 9 (24:11):
Character, character is a big deal.

Speaker 3 (24:12):
You know what I mean.

Speaker 9 (24:14):
You ain't got to be mother Teresa, but you can't
punch in the face, right, you know what I'm saying.
So so so one was talent too.

Speaker 6 (24:22):
With character.

Speaker 9 (24:23):
Three, we called the Ambassadors, So we we literally called
the school and called the football program and we're like, hey,
does this guy represent your school? And that tells us
a lot. You know, you you would be surprised how
many these great kids don't understand that they are an
influence to a to a million dollars billion dollars in
some of these school cases company and uh, and they're

(24:43):
they're representing something and and so we asked that are
they an ambassador to the university? And then the fourth
one is is we called just are the a legends
really a future legend? Y'all know the NFL slogan is
a player today, a legend forever. And so I just
try to go out there and with our group from Maxwell,
so we try to take a guy that we say,
this guy's gonna be an NFL player and Chris, you

(25:04):
read them off. We're hot right now, ye know me?
We rather you know that nineteen when when we get
them in and they turned into a handful of pros.
You've got two third kickoveralls and one number overall, Trevor Lawrence.
I'm very first picker. Uh and uh, Kenneth Gainswell went
to the Super Bowl already. Uh, you know brock Hours.

(25:26):
We think he's gonna be phenomenal with the Raiders. So
we've picked well so far and where we're really excited
about about this year's crop.

Speaker 5 (25:34):
Right, let me ask you this, out of the hot
thirty seven, are do you are you biased? Do you
lean towards is someone on that list right now, before
any of the games, before any of that, who's sticking
out to you?

Speaker 3 (25:47):
Can you give us that is that? Is that a no?

Speaker 5 (25:49):
No? Or can you be like, hey, I'm you know,
I know this kid, I'm right, I'm looking to I'm
watching this year. Do you have any favorites so far?

Speaker 9 (26:00):
You know, I had to do my own stuff the
biggest justice because you know, I'm a relationship guy, you know,
so if I get close to you and I'm gonna
want you to win. So I have made sure that
I am not the control of all the pickings, you.

Speaker 3 (26:13):
Know what I mean.

Speaker 9 (26:13):
And so so the Maxwell Football Club, they do a
great job with selecting the guys and and I do
have a vote, but it's not it's not it's not
one hundred percent who Shawn's favorite, so and so. So
they've done a good job. I looked at them kind
of do the thirty seven, they'll get down to the
fourteen for the semi finalists, they'll get the top five
and right before the look Guts play their championship game

(26:35):
and the and that's in with the top five and
then and then I actually get to call the winner
on Christmas Day. So I try not to get too close.
But everybody, I mean everybody that I got a cousin
that's so and so here, bad boy, hey looking on,
you know, and so I get allot of that and
it's a lot of fun, but I purposely don't do
it because I want to. I want to judge it

(26:57):
correctly and make sure that we get so you say.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
Right, So you just mess Sean.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
So, obviously college football is a lot different, not only
from when you played, but from when you started this
award now because of NIL deals and stuff like that.

Speaker 3 (27:16):
So what have you.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
Noticed any difference in the players as far as you know,
just things they might be looking for, just their whole
outlook now that they are getting paid while in college.
And what advice do you give some of these guys
about the NIL and handling it properly so that you

(27:39):
don't derail your chances of making the NFL.

Speaker 9 (27:43):
You know, there's I would say that there's there's two
things that are just they're very hard to get your
hands wrapped around it if you're not if you don't
know who you are, and that's money insane And we're
giving nineteen year old then both of them. And so
what I like to do is I like to come
in and you know it starts off as being big

(28:05):
brother Sean with Trevor to Uncle Sean with with Drake.

Speaker 10 (28:08):
You know, you know, like I meant you know, but
but yeah, I try to I try to run through
all my my pop my professional legacy program most of the.

Speaker 9 (28:23):
Got there, starting from from the hot from the hot
list all the way down to the winner. We start
picking the guys that that we know, Hey, we want
to come here and serve you and give you some
of the best information about learning who you really are
so you don't have to go play the identity game
and end up foolishly spending all your money or foolishly

(28:44):
thinking that you have to be quote unquote the man
that looks like this, because that's the biggest trib We
know that there's a great percentage of athletes that lose
everything by the time they retire, and that's finances, that's family,
that's friendships, and so when you actually get your identity set,
you give yourself a chance to be a fourty year
old that still has some money and still has some
some some character about them and the life that they

(29:06):
really want. So we're all about trying to help the
guys grab that as soon as possible, and and that's
what I do. That's when we try to tease some
that from the beginning. It's like you're bigger than football,
but you need to go dominate that in every area
on and off the field. And so that's that's the
kind of the advice that we start the suw on
that path and we just walk into the program.

Speaker 3 (29:25):
That's amazing.

Speaker 5 (29:26):
Man, Look when we look at the current state of
just to jump to the pros, we look at the
current state of the NFL and the running back position.
Right back when you were playing Marshall playing some of
the greats, being league in VP right was attainable. You
could You could be the league MVP at that position.

(29:48):
It was such a dominant position. You could literally change
the game, uh and change the whole team's trajectory if
you had the ilk that you and Marshall on some
of the great run did. Where do you stand on
the state of the running back position? Now, we saw
last year they didn't want to pay the guys. Guys

(30:10):
are you know on these contracts? You know, it's just
not a lot of money. Their devalue. We've seen receivers
contracts numbers go skyrocket, thirty million a year running backs,
they trying to get nine ten million year.

Speaker 3 (30:25):
What are your thoughts on that?

Speaker 9 (30:27):
I mean was going on? They getting paid what I
got paid.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
Right right right?

Speaker 9 (30:33):
That retored?

Speaker 3 (30:34):
You know.

Speaker 6 (30:35):
You know the problem is is because of the coaches,
you know, getting paid so much more than ever before,
they had to and this is going back to about
ten years ago, they had to kind of feel and
I begin I feel like I still at the beginning
with like with Mike Homework back in the days.

Speaker 9 (30:54):
We all know I love Mike, but I could feel like, man,
I just don't want to give you the ball thirty times.
But like Mike, we went just do that, just give it.
They wanted to figure out a way to say, man,
look how smarty I'm gonna calling this play. This guy's
running wide open, and I'm like, man, you may give
me that darn ball. But what's happened is is now
they've done it so much where now they don't need

(31:15):
a guy to come and take over the game, you know.
And with this Mike Hone was my coach, the offensive
coordinator with Gil Haskell, and people don't know who that is,
but Gil was the running back coach for Eric Dickerson.
You know what, So that's the kind of mode and
coaching that I got, and I had the great Stump
Mitchell the running back whispers my running back coach. It
was all designed around that. Well, now they're just like, well,

(31:36):
let's just go get three three scat guys and one
guy can run it every now and then and we'll
just figure it out that way. And it's just kind
of lower that. So you get guys that are my
height and size. You know, I'm six one, I can
carry about two twenty five. Yeah, and so what happened
is is now if you beat me up a little bit,
I can go play two forty five and go play

(31:58):
outside linebacker. Or if you slim me down, I ain't
play two hundred and play slot receiver. And you're having
probably not the best, but the second, third, fourth best
running backs. Now they're playing slot receiver. They're Deebo Samuels.
Now they're playing outside linebacker. You know, you know, right,
so you're seeing the guy that would be like, I
gotta go win the game. You know, you just go back,

(32:19):
you know, twenty years now the best guy is no
longer saying I'm gonna be a running back and help
my team win. Now is saying I'm gonna help my
team win because I'm gonna be a slot or I'm
going to be an outside linebacker. And so you're you're missing,
you know, ten fifteen amazing running backs because they're playing
different positions in the pros now.

Speaker 1 (32:36):
And I would have thought, and we only got about
thirty seconds for the answer. But man, I bet now
you see these teams having two and three running backs
that are playing regularly, I bet that would have ticked
you off, man, like you want the ball right? You
don't in every series, every you know what I mean,
Like that would be exasperating to you.

Speaker 3 (32:58):
And Eric Dickerson and guys in the day, oh for.

Speaker 9 (33:01):
Sure, because we were built from the beginning to take
over the game, and so there was no there was
no two great players. It was the great player in
the backup another great player. Like you know, I came
up with Ricky Waters. Ricky said to me, he's like, dang,
I'll get someone you have to retire. Well, I'm going
to go somewhere else, you know what I mean. I
was Liker brog it like that. He's like, that's the

(33:22):
way the league is, and so it wouldn't be like
it now they try to figure out how to how
to keep us both on the field. It's auditioning ballgame now.

Speaker 1 (33:28):
Yep, all right, that's Sean Alexander. When we'll be watching
the hot thirty seven and uh, maybe we'll throw a
little some of our recommendations your way for some of
these winners as the season goes on.

Speaker 9 (33:40):
Hey, I'll jump back on in the middle season. We'll
talk about it some more.

Speaker 1 (33:43):
That's all right, cool, cool, appreciate that. That's the great
Sean Alexander. Keep it locked. The eye Couple of Fox

Speaker 1 (34:03):
All right, it's the Odd Couple live from the Tirereck
dot Com studios. E from We just got off the
phone with Sean Alexander, former NFL MVP, and he was
talking about his Shawn Alexander Freshman of the Year award.

Speaker 3 (34:16):
One of the winners.

Speaker 1 (34:19):
Was Drake May who now is with the New England Patriots.
And look, it's just preseason, but he looked good in
the preseason, and.

Speaker 3 (34:28):
Gerrod may so they named.

Speaker 1 (34:30):
Jacoby Brissett the starter for week one, the veteran, you know, journeyman,
But I want to ask you this as a former player.
Gerii Mayo three days ago said that Drake May has outplayed.

Speaker 3 (34:47):
Jacoby Brissett in the in the preseason.

Speaker 1 (34:51):
And then today he says, we believe, as he's naming
Brissett the starter, we believe Jacoby Brissett gives us the
best chance of winning. Contradiction obviously not a good look,
but mainly.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
How does that play in the locker room?

Speaker 1 (35:09):
If guys he heard the coach say this guy played
better and they probably saw even not only in the games,
but they were probably seeing it in practice as my guests,
that Drake May was playing better, is that going to
be a problem with like, how will players view that that?

(35:30):
Wait a minute, this guy has looked better, you said
he's played better, and yet he's not starting. Can that
drop morale or at least have the potential to drop morale?
And does Gerald Mao have to be careful because you
don't want players going out there thinking are we not
trying to win?

Speaker 5 (35:49):
While were not playing the best guys, and look, there's
a difference between being the best guy and you know,
playing better in practice or in preseason.

Speaker 3 (36:00):
There's a difference.

Speaker 5 (36:02):
Case in point, So, three out of the first four
games are on the road for the Patriots, right, Are
you going to send Drake May into the Bengals to
Cincinnati against the Bengals defense for his first start? Probably not.

(36:24):
Are you going to send him to New York against
the Jets defense, probably not? Are you going to send
him to California and play the forty nine ers against
that defense? So what you want to do is, look,
you may have talent. You may say, hey, we have
this young man who has a bright future, and yes,

(36:44):
he's coming along fast, but how do we give him opportunities? Now,
if it was reversed, if three out of their first
four games were at home against opponents you felt comfortable
rolling him out with, then I understand that. But it
is a coach's responsibility and GM's responsibility to not only

(37:11):
put the best players out there, but you also have
to create an environment where you think your players can
benefit and get better and not regress. We don't talk
a lot about that, and I think that that's the
nuance part of coaching that Andy Reid had with someone

(37:32):
like I don't know Patrick Mahomes, right what like, So
you you have to understand, like, okay, we have You
don't think Patrick Mahomes his rookie year was in in
practice going ham.

Speaker 3 (37:46):
I mean, you don't think he was going nuts?

Speaker 5 (37:47):
We right, So, but you also have to be aware, Okay, well,
I'm first of all, this is our guy for the
next twelve years, hopefully, and I don't want to set
him up for failure and build bad habits. This insessive
need to put these young players out there right now.
You gotta go now right, And I get it in

(38:08):
some cases, yes, but they don't even have a roster
that could benefit Drake may right now as the starting quarterback.

Speaker 1 (38:15):
Which is probably a big part of it too, because
I up with you, like I am all for a
rookie heck, maybe even sitting the whole year, and maybe
more than one year.

Speaker 3 (38:27):
I mean we Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 1 (38:28):
Let's think of the examples Jordan Love you brought up
Patrick Mahomes. I mean, these guys like I get, and
you notice.

Speaker 3 (38:36):
The reason teams are doing this is because.

Speaker 1 (38:39):
They want to get guys, you know, on their rookie
scales as we mentioned early, and see if you can
win during those four or five years where you're not
paying him and you can build around him.

Speaker 3 (38:50):
But I do think that can do the guys in
this service, the.

Speaker 1 (38:53):
Players, and if they gave more of these guys a
little time, I think that would be beneficial for so now, look,
I expect to see may probably within about a month, yes, yes, right,
take over the team.

Speaker 5 (39:06):
Maybe after they get through that time. The bad thing
is their by doesn't come into week fourteen. That's a
tough one.

Speaker 1 (39:12):
Yeah, they gonna have to They're gonna have to put
him in before that, I would think. So, all right,
we got one hour left. Y'all know what to do.
Keep it locked. A couple
