Right after we get off the air, David Hellman, host
of the NFL on Fox podcast, will join us at
the bottom of the hour Rob to talk all of
this NFL free agency madness.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Let me say this Rob quickly.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
You know we're having my national men's organization, the King Movement,
is having its annual Men's Conference Summit this weekend in Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Thursday, well, Friday and Saturday fifteenth and sixteenth.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
If anyone's interested in going, you can register at Kingsummit
dot org. But Rob, as you know, we're also having
a basketball tournament. It's at the Word Church in Cleveland.
Five thousand dollars to the winning team, one thousand dollars
to the runner up. We got it's five on five
(01:50):
eighteen and over. Sixty five teams are registered, Rob to play.
What sixty five teams are register that's crazy, Chris, that's
big money. It's gonna be some ballers. That sounds like
the best ballers in Cleveland gonna be out there. So, uh,
if you want to be playing sixty sixty five teams
(02:11):
and three five on five single elimination, so you better
bring your your a game out the gate. But the
registration is free, so I don't even know if we're
still take open and open to registrations, are going to.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Play that many games?
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Sixty week games are like eight minutes running clock or
certain I don't know if seven.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
It's full court.
Speaker 1 (02:39):
It's quick, you know, games are you know quick, But
that's big money on the line. So if you want
to register, go to words City dot org, Words City
dot Org. I'm if you can still get in, you
can try see if you get five hundred, five hundred.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Or five thousand dollars. I'm sorry.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Or if you want to go to the king Summit,
the men's conference, you can register for that at Kingsummit
dot o RG. It's Friday and Saturday, March fifteenth and sixteenth,
coming up the Word Church in Cleveland. All right, Rob,
we talked about we let off the show actually with
the news that Kirk Cousins has signed with the Atlanta Falcons,
(03:20):
and there are other signings that have taken place.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
There is uh.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
We mentioned some of the running backs, but at quarterback,
Baker Mayfield re signs with Tampa Bay. That's a good
look for him. He's comfortable there. They're comfortable with him
because he needs a home. Yeah, three years, one hundred million. Uh.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
He played last year they won a playoff game, yep,
and and they like him.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
Theres ten Where are you going? Like Bob He's had
eight head coaches in his career.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
Tradiculous. That's just stay there and keep playing and build
on it. I love it absolutely so good move for him, obviously.
Russell Wi and we'll get into that later. He signs
with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
And Rob, the big question is what does all this
mean for Justin Fields? And we had a couple of
callers bring it up because the number of teams that
are in need of a quarterback. We obviously every team
doesn't have a great quarterback, but certain teams are. Most
(04:25):
teams are set at quarterback, Rob, or they're going to
draft the guy.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Now, remember Justin Field's got to get paid on that.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Well, he next year he would make about three million.
But by May of this year they have to decide
the fifth year option. And that's where the challenge is
for Justin Fields. Where there's more than that, because I'm
about to read you some of the stuff that's being
said around the league. And by the way, Rob, that
(04:55):
fifth year option that they have to decide on by
this May, it will pay you Fields twenty three point
three million.
Speaker 3 (05:02):
Oh my. So that is a problem.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
And according to ESPN's NFL insider Dan Graziano, Rob.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
He's saying that teams are viewing.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
This is the feedback, according to him, that the Bears
are hearing from teams as they look to try to
trade Justin Fields. They're hearing from teams that they don't
consider Justin Fields to be any more of a lock
as far as you know, becoming a good player, good
starting quarterback than Sam Donald.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Or Drew Lock.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (05:39):
And the fact that Donald you know, you know, you
can get him for a song, right and same with
Drew Lock.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
You can get those dudes for a couple million.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
And so that is one thing that's hurting Justin Fields Rob,
is that it's not only are you uncertain as to
how good he's going to be, but you have to
decide by May before you really even see him, obviously,
before you see him play this season, after whether or
not you want to give him twenty three million. And
I think that's why Pittsburgh Rob looked at Russell. Obviously
(06:17):
it's a no brainer. And I you know, those are
some of the things that are working against Justin Fields.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
And let me read Rob.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
Justin has some incredible highlight plays. I mean, you can
watch a Justin Fields highlight reel and be impressed. A
lot of it, not all of it. There are a
few nice passes in there, but a lot of it.
Rob is running what he's done with his legs and
through week seventeen last year. You know, obviously teams rested
(06:49):
their starters in Week eighteen, a lot of teams that
were in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
But through Week seventeen, this is These are some of the.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Rankings for Justin Field among the thirty one qualified quarterbacks.
In fourth quarter completion, he was twenty fifth in the league.
I'm sorry he was last, dead last of the thirty
one qualified quarterbacks fifty one point eight percent. In yards
per attempt, he's twenty fifth five point nine. He was
(07:20):
tied for twenty ninth. In fourth quarter interceptions he had
six and thirtieth in QBR.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
So since joining.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
The league in twenty twenty one, rop Fields his last
among thirty eight qualified quarterbacks quarter last in fourth quarter
interceptions sixteen thirty sixth in completion percentage fifty six percent,
thirty third in QBR, and in thirty eight career starts,
(07:51):
he's thrown for more than two hundred and twenty five
yards only six times. Rob, eighteen NFL starter last season,
averaged at least two hundred and thirty passing yards a game.
So Justin Fields is very much an unknown, very talented
rob obviously with his legs for sure, and has some
(08:15):
arm talent and some of it obviously we rob We've
talked about it.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
The Bears are not good at developing quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
They have not had it. And this is this sounds
like a joke, but it's not. It's the truth. They
have not had a top notch quarterback since Sid Luckman
in the nineteen forties.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
That's the truth. That's amazing. But we talked about all
the time, and so Sid was pretty damn good too. Well,
he's he's a Hall of Famer. Y.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, some of this is on them, but obviously the player,
some of it's on him.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
But this is what me and you talked about, Like
when people like debating whether or not to keep him
or not all the players want them to all the dude,
if there's any debate about the guy after you watch
him play for four years, Chris, it doesn't that tell
you seriously, Like after watching somebody that long, it should
(09:18):
be like a no brainer. Oh no, oh, we got
we got.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Justin Herbert, don't. We don't care if we have the
first pick. We're not picking a.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
Quarterback, right right, We're not picking a court.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
I think occasionally there may be you're not certain on
a guy yet Obviously there are some guys developed later
or you know, later in their careers. But for the
most part, I would tend to agree with you, Rob,
And right, here's what I want to throw at you.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Where.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
I mean, I'm looking at teams now, but where does
he go that need? Yeah, Minnesota, they're they've been associated
with Sam Donald, New England, which has been associated with
well they're open for business. Uh, and Denver has been
associated with You get these names, Zach Wilson and Sam Donald.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
So what is the best landing spot for Justin Fields?
If you're Minnesota?
Speaker 1 (10:24):
The problem is that fifth year, Rob, That's clearly what's
turning people off. I would take Justin Fields over Sam
Donald or Zach Wilson.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Yeah, only because to me, there's a little more right,
a little more like a question that he might.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Right right, Like, there's a chance right where Sam Donald.
I think we know where he is. Zach Wilson. Zach
Wilson is right, there's like no doubt about it. I agree,
there's like a little bit of an unknown.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
Now Wilson, of course, Rob g he still got there.
He's got the fifth year issue as well, and so
that could hurt him. I mean, I don't know who
in the world is picking that up. Nobody just rejected.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Yeah, you'll just even if you sign him, you just
be like, we're not picking you up for the fifth year. Yeah,
there would have to be some sort of what attachment
or or you just sign him for one year.
Speaker 1 (11:19):
Say we're rejecting your fifth year option, so let's see
what you do this year.
Speaker 5 (11:24):
Rob.
Speaker 1 (11:24):
I think that if I'm gonna throw a few things
out at you, and maybe these teams I guess they could.
You know, again, the same thing holds as far as
the fifth year. But if you're the Jets, do you
take a chance bring him in for you?
Speaker 6 (11:44):
Now?
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Maybe the problem is Aaron Rodgers is talking about playing
three or four more years.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
But what if you.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Brought in Justin Fields sits behind Aaron Rodgers and learns.
It's a different type of quarterback obviously, but you know,
maybe he's your quarterback of the future if he can learn.
We saw Jordan Love improve under Aaron Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
I just think he has to play. People want to
see Justin Field's play, Like he's played how many years
it's been three or foe three years, so he's played
three years For him to sit for two years. I
just don't see that.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Yeah, I don't want to.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Well, but I'm just saying, like, what about the Giants.
I think I brought that up the other day.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
Well the Giant Tony got one more year, right, but yeah,
one more.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
He got Daniel Jones one more year? But bringing what
if you bring in fields? You Jones is your starter,
but it's a short least first four games.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
It's so Jones doesn't show you anything. Do you go
to fields? Yeah? I mean just you know, I'm looking
at possibility.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
Say though that the ownership loves Daniel Jones in New York,
So that's gonna be your your issue. They've already committed
this kind of money to him.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
They told you this is last year, guaranteed. You might
be right.
Speaker 4 (13:01):
But somebody, I'm just saying, somebody likes him, Chris, Like,
like you know, we talk about.
Speaker 3 (13:05):
All the time.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
All you need is one person, you know, like, who's
who's making a decision, right, That's all you need. You
don't need everybody. Everybody don't have to love you. Who's
pulling the strings. Oh that guy likes me? Okay, I
got a shot.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
Washington's going to draft a quarterback New England probably is
going to draft a quarterback Rob, and so.
Speaker 4 (13:26):
Was mac Jones said, I just was surprised he went
to Jacksonville, not that he's out of New England.
Speaker 3 (13:32):
Right, Well, you surprised by that?
Speaker 1 (13:34):
Interesting And obviously their guy is Trevor Lawrence, but why
would you bring in another young guy?
Speaker 3 (13:40):
I was just surprised.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
There's just a slight doubt about Trevor Or not want
to be a combat It's not gonna be a quarterback competition, you.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Know what I mean? Or is it that mac Jones
is just a backup Chris That?
Speaker 6 (13:52):
Well?
Speaker 1 (13:52):
I think, I think what will happen? I think this
could be a good situation for him. It was toxic
up in New England, right They mishandled him. I'm not
trying to defend him like he's great, but they clearly
mishandled him and he needs to get out of there.
So I look at Jacksonville, Rob, Doug Peterson's good with quarterbacks.
(14:12):
He goes up there, there's no pressure on him. Rob,
He's not gonna play. Trevor Lawrence is the guy you
can learn for a year in a stable, steady, quarterback
friendly environment. You learn and then I think Rob next year.
I don't think anybody would just give him the starting job.
I'm certain of that. But after a year in Jacksonville
(14:36):
learning under Trevor Lawrence, I know they're a young same age,
but still just learning from Doug Peterson, getting his swag
back and his confidence back, and you know, I think
a team might bring him in and give him a
chance like to fight for a starting job. We saw
Marcus Mariota and Miss Trubisky, Sam Donold, now Baker Mayfield
(15:01):
all have gotten second chances, no doubt. So he could
get a second chance, but it won't come like right
away quickly.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
Uh, Rob, are you gonna update from what Ian Rappaport.
Speaker 7 (15:14):
Ian Rappaport NFL Network in the last hour, so right
if we went to showtime set on NFL Network, that
this could be spin.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
So take it for what it is worth.
Speaker 7 (15:23):
The Bears have not started seriously engaging in trade talks
for Justin Fields because they want to be sure about
selecting Caleb Williams first overall before they start gauging the
interest on Justin Fields.
Speaker 4 (15:37):
That's that's spend, that spend. Where's Bill O'Reilly when you
need him?
Speaker 1 (15:41):
Chris, that's spin that you don't have to be a
season stopping.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
That's them. They're trying to because they're trying to save
the idea that he has no trade value.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
Right, very good, dude, Come on yeah, I mean, but
look to show you the Brooklyn Bridge too, Chris, if
you met them, I get it right, I mean, they cannot.
I don't think have Justin Fields in the building when
(16:13):
Caleb Williams is there.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
No, no, you gotta move right from there. I got too,
and so they have. That's what they're doing.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
There's no question that that is spinn Hey don't believe
it for a second. If they ro if they have it,
and I don't believe this, but if they haven't been
talking to teams about trading him, they're not doing their
due dealing.
Speaker 3 (16:35):
Absolutely. Eight seven seven darn near be fired.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
I'm with you, Chris. It's ridiculous for them to even
put that out right. That's eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox. What's next for Justin Fields? What do you
think is the best fit for him? Your thoughts next?

On Fox, we can fit in a couple of calls
on Justin Fields.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
What do you think would be a good landing spot
for him? All right, Chris, let's do it. Darren and Maryland,
you're on the odd couple Fox Sports Radio. What's up Darren, Hey,
Rob and Chris?
Speaker 5 (18:46):
How y'all doing to night?
Speaker 3 (18:47):
Joe great, great brother.
Speaker 5 (18:50):
Yeah. The more I think it, butout I like it.
I like to see him go to Minnesota.
Speaker 6 (18:53):
I know it's hard trading.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
Within his division, but I'd love to see him throwing
the ball at Justin Jeffersons, Jordan Adison, TD Honksis. And also,
if I'm the Vikings, I'm grabbing one a free agent
running backs, so they need a running game. I would
grab either Derrick Carry or Jones from Green Bank. Yeah,
certainly when you put them on that turn.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
I don't mind fields there. I mean, they got to
decide on the twenty three million rod. But look, he's
got more upside than any of these other guys, and
that they do have good skill. You're good receivers there,
and it is a different type of system than you know,
I know, people question can he be effective in that system?
Speaker 3 (19:34):
Give him a shot?
Speaker 4 (19:35):
And see, I'm gonna tell you what what just Chris,
if somebody thought like he was a diamond in a
rough and oh my god, we have a chance to
grab him, somebody would have grabbed him, like they would
have been like, oh my god, this young guy was
so much upside. Maybe he was in a bad situation
in Chicago. We should grab him. And the longer this
kind of you know, goes along. It just it doesn't
(19:57):
seem like there's that kind of interest. Just what I'm saying,
Like a young guy like that who's very athletic, like, well,
you're not interested in him.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
Especially rob when I mean you just look at the
number of teams that are still gonna be in the quarterback.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
Right, that's the other part up.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
The Raiders just hired his ex offensive coordinator and they
took Gardner Minshew instead.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
Right there.
Speaker 3 (20:20):
I mean, I don't know part of me.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
Look, he certainly hasn't proven anything yet other than that
he's athletic and can run.
Speaker 3 (20:28):
But I also am not like done with him.
Speaker 1 (20:31):
I mean, I'm still I think there's as you said
last segment, it's still a little bit of mystery about him,
Like you.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
Know what he's not.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
He's not sealed definitely, right right, Steal, there's a backup
or anything exactly.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Mike and Augusta. You're on the couple of Fox Sports Rader.
What up? Mike? What up?
Speaker 6 (20:54):
Just a fail situation. That's kind of interesting because I
think he'll be better anywhere but Chicago because they just
don't develop quarterbacks. Well, he was just have a better
situation anywhere else. However, the Bears are any usnique situations
where they can bet draft the betch player available, get
Marvin Harrison Junior, and keep justin fields and draft the
(21:16):
quarterback later on in the draft, because the quarterback position
is getting to be like the running back.
Speaker 1 (21:21):
Now you know what, I'm gonna disagree with you. I'm
gonna me like the running back. I gotta hear that.
Speaker 6 (21:27):
So so so everybody says that you can find a
good running back anywhere in the draft and they don't
draft them high. Well, all of the top NVD candidates
weren't high bigs either. They came from deep down in
the draft only I think, well.
Speaker 1 (21:39):
Yeah, but I think the running back positions oversaturated. And
you you look at Cleveland last year. You pulled quarterback
Isaiah Pucheco seventh round running back for the Chiefs.
Speaker 3 (21:54):
But it's not that easy to find a quarterback. And
I get it.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
He's talking about Brock Pardy played well, as you know,
mister relevant. And obviously Dak Prescott even was just a
fourth round pick. But those are kind of just it's
happened throughout the NFL history. Rob that Joe Montana was
a third round pick. Obviously Tom Brady six. But you
can't count on that. No, you can't be like, oh,
(22:18):
I can get a quarterback in the fifth round, and
I mean you might get fortunate, but that's kind of But.
Speaker 4 (22:25):
Here's the problem, Chris, if you're Chicago, you can't do
it because of your history. If you blow this, Chris
and you can't, what do we say, take Caleb.
Speaker 3 (22:37):
Caleb has to prove he can't play. Chris.
Speaker 4 (22:39):
I'm sorry, I'll beat the GM that took Caleb Williams
and it didn't work out.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
But I'm not going to beat the GM.
Speaker 4 (22:46):
Who didn't take Caleb Williams and that dude, Oh my god, right.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
And you and we're still struggling. So all right, we
got David Hellman around the corner.
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports to lineup in

Speaker 1 (23:09):
Our next guest is the host of the NFL on
Fox podcast.
Speaker 3 (23:13):
We welcome in, David Helman. David, how are you. What's happening?
Speaker 5 (23:17):
I'm great, y'all. Thanks for having me.
Speaker 3 (23:19):
No, thanks for joining us.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
Man.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
Let's get right to it.
Speaker 1 (23:23):
We opened up the show talking about Kirk Cousins going
to Atlanta.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
We can get to him a little later, but.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
The Atlanta gets Cousins, Pittsburgh gets Russell Wilson, the places
for Justin Fields to go are drying up. And what
do you think is going on with him? And what
is the market for him?
Speaker 5 (23:47):
Yeah, you know I was joking about this earlier. Today,
it feels like Justin Fields's market is decreasing by the
month since the season ended, you know, I mean you
go back to January, Fields and played pretty well down
the show stretch. Bears made a run, and there was
an idea like, well, at least a second round pick,
maybe even a first if it's the right circumstance. Then
(24:09):
that quickly becomes like, no, it's probably more like a
two or three, and you just played it out. I mean,
there aren't that many landing spots left. I mean even
New England if they're interested in that. They just signed
Jakobe Brissett to a one year deal. So how many
more places are there in desperate need of a quarterback?
And I'm thinking Las Vegas obviously you've kind of heard
(24:30):
their name get kicked around today. Fields his former offense.
Speaker 1 (24:35):
Minshew did do you think that is? Does that signify
that they might want him or not?
Speaker 5 (24:43):
So it's a good point they did sign Gardner Minshew.
I view that as at least you could bring in
Fields to compete. You know, Minshew was signed as the
backup last year. He obviously got the Colts nearly to
the playoffs, but I don't think that's the situation where
the Raiders are handing him the starting quarterback job. I
think eight and O'Connell's still there, maybe they draft the guy,
(25:03):
or maybe if Luke Getzy's on board with it, maybe
they would try to acquire Justin Fields because the crazy
thing is, I mean, like y'all said, what's the market here?
Maybe you could still get a third round pick for him.
But my guess is you're probably talking about like a
force right now. I mean, Matt Jones just went for
a sixth and I know Bears fans probably have a
hard time swallowing that, but it really feels like the
(25:25):
market has dried up with the exception of one, maybe
two more landing spots.
Speaker 4 (25:30):
Yeah, it does seem like that. Kirk Cousins in Atlanta,
let's go there. Obviously better than what Rider was able
to do, which wasn't much, but still kirk Cousins, I mean,
he puts up numbers, doesn't win any big games, primetime
games one and three in the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (25:47):
Where's what is Atlanta's thinking here? Do they think they
can win now?
Speaker 4 (25:52):
Is that why to go get Kirk Cousins rather than
trying to build what of Justin Fields or trying to
develop something.
Speaker 5 (25:58):
Oh, I absolutely think they can win now. I mean,
if you look at it, the Falcons are a game
or two away from winning the division last year. Honestly
the year before that, I mean, with no quarterback play
to speak of, this has been a solid enough team
to be in that conversation. If they don't lose the
most embarrassing game ever to Carolina last year, you might
(26:20):
be talking about them getting into the playoffs over Tampa Bay.
So I'm sure the Falcons look at this and say, look,
we got the Jean Robinson, we got Drake London, we
got Kyle Pitts, we got a solid old line, we
got pieces on defense. Like they are quarterback away not
from I'm not trying to paint them as a Super
Bowl contender, but their quarterback away from being a very
(26:41):
competitive playoff caliber team. And that's what Kirk Cousins is.
And I think the other thing is, you know, it's
our job to talk about legacies and playoff wins and
all that stuff, but think about this from Arthur Blank's perspective,
the owner of the Falcons. It's been six long years
since his team has really even been relevant. And at
the end of the day, yeah, you want to win
(27:03):
playoff games. You want to win super Bowls. But you
want people excited about your team. You want people like
us talking about him, you want people going to games
and buying jerseys. And I think that's what competence that
the quarterback position does for you. So that's the going rate,
and the good thing for them is I don't know
if the Falcons win a super Bowl because of this,
but you can set your watch to Kirk Cousins producing
(27:25):
in the regular season, and that's what I think he's
going to do. I think the Falcons got a lot
better today. I think they've got a chance to win
the division, and ultimately I think that's worth it when
you're talking about making an investment to get people interested
in your team.
Speaker 4 (27:39):
Yeah, but also sometimes and I hear you quick fix
or guys who but you don't know, I think there's
an upside to maybe Justin Fields, who could have gone there,
change what they got, finally give him some pieces around him.
Speaker 3 (27:54):
Also better coaching.
Speaker 4 (27:56):
The Bears haven't been able to develop a quarterback in
a long time, just about Justin Fields, so there could
have been that situational circumstance where you're really building towards
something at thirty six years old, where are you going
with Kirk Cousins other than home did or maybe a
show you're not really going anywhere.
Speaker 5 (28:15):
I don't completely disagree with you. I mean I do think,
like I said, as long as Kirk Cousins is healthy
and I'm going to trust that his achilles will be fine.
I mean, I've seen the videos of him working out.
I don't think the Falcons would make an investment like
this without feeling relatively confident about his recovery. But I
mean where kirk Cousins goes, competitiveness follows, you know. I mean,
(28:37):
the Vikings have made the playoffs while he's been there.
They've been in the mix for it. And I agree
with you again, I'm not trying to sell Kirk Cousins
as one of the very best quarterbacks in the league.
But if I'm Arthur Blank, if you're Other Blank, and
you're looking at this and you're talking to your football people,
and you're saying, there's a one hundred percent chance Kirk
Cousins is going to have us in the mix to
(28:58):
win the division at this price, or maybe we trade
for Justin Fields, maybe it works out, and maybe it
blows up in our face. I mean, after what Arthur
Blank has been through parting ways with Matt Ryan, drafting,
Deson Ridder, trying all these different things. I mean, again,
it's easy for us to talk about it, but when
you are tied to that team, when you got to
sit there and watch bad quarterback play seventeen weeks out
(29:21):
of the year, if you're Arthur Blank and you can
afford it, you say no, no, no, no more experiments.
Let's bring in the proven guy who we think has
a very very good chance to make us competitive. And
I think that's what ultimately won out is give me
the safe bet that's more expensive over the potential, you know,
long shot upside of a guy like Justin Field.
Speaker 4 (29:41):
Did you hear Kirk Cousins forty and slip? He called
him Arthur Blank check after you got that deal. But
that's another story.
Speaker 5 (29:47):
I mean, the man has three hundred million plus in
career earnings. It look, he might not be the best
quarterback in the league, but he's the best back getter
in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
No, I did it three hundred million with one playoff?
Is be dark? Good?
Speaker 2 (30:02):
Dave?
Speaker 3 (30:02):
What do you think?
Speaker 1 (30:03):
There's a lot of talk now, I mean the Cowboys,
Tony Pollard obviously won't be there.
Speaker 3 (30:07):
He's going with Tennessee. What do you think they do
it running back?
Speaker 1 (30:11):
Is their interest in Derek Henry or Aaron Jones or
do they maybe go with a god is not a
big name but who could be productive?
Speaker 5 (30:20):
Cowboy fans will tell you. I mean, this is a
frustrating week to care about the Dallas Cowboys. They are
just not They don't dive into the deep water free agency.
They haven't done it in a decade. They don't want
to spend top dollar on somebody else's player. They don't
want to run the risk that they get burned by
a bad contract. So one thing I know for sure,
they're going to hang back and wait. So no, I
(30:42):
don't think they're in on Derrick Henry unless his market's
not as robust as he thought. If the price goes
down here over the next week, but.
Speaker 3 (30:49):
The Cowboys said they were all in, they're not all in.
Speaker 4 (30:52):
Huh.
Speaker 5 (30:53):
I think you got to take everything you hear from
Jerry Jones at this time of year with a grain
of salt. So yeah, I mean he did say that,
but his definition is clearly different from everyone else's. So
if the price goes down on somebody. Yeah, they might
kick the tires. I would imagine a week or two
from now, they'll sign a modestly priced veteran and then
(31:13):
they'll look for long term replacement in the draft. I mean,
Tony Pollard at one point in time was a fourth
round draft pick, and I would imagine they're going to
trust their track record in the draft to find another
guy just like them.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Okay, all right, Well that's Dave. Help in great information. Dave.
We appreciate the knowledge, brother, appreciate you time.

about the Josh Jacobs deal, Rob Gi, what tell us
about the details of Josh.
Speaker 7 (32:40):
Jacobs contract you signed with Green Bay? Chris you know this,
and Rob you know this too. If there's one thing
that's being reported and the other thing that's true. Right, So,
Josh Jacobs was reported as four years, forty eight million dollars,
which is not good on two fronts. Number one being
the last time the Packers signed a running back to
a big deal that would be Aaron Jones, wasn't twenty
(33:01):
twenty one. The contract then was four years, forty eight
million dollars, so the market is not exactly booming.
Speaker 3 (33:07):
That's number one.
Speaker 7 (33:08):
Number two though, most importantly, Andrew Brant, friend of the show,
worked for the Packers for a long time.
Speaker 4 (33:13):
You know.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
It's how these deals work.
Speaker 7 (33:15):
The packers only under rare circumstances what they do differently,
But Normally they do not give out guaranteed money beyond
the first year.
Speaker 3 (33:24):
That's just the way they operate.
Speaker 7 (33:25):
So Andrew Brant reported that while it's four years forty
eight million dollars being reported on social media and ESPN,
Fox Sports, what have you nah, the actual deal one
year fourteen point eight million.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
Yeah, Chris.
Speaker 4 (33:38):
My thing is it's really with the players, the union
and the agents. I know, for the agents, they wanted
to sound good, I got my guy four years forty
eight million dollars. No, you didn't got one year fourteen million.
That's what's guaranteed. That's what you know you're gonna get.
I don't know why they play that game with those contracts.
(33:58):
And I'm not like Chris, and I know they got
some contracts that are two ways and they're not all
guaranteed now, which I still find.
Speaker 3 (34:06):
The don't and that's just a few two ways. But
but you.
Speaker 4 (34:11):
Signed a guarantee contract, Baseball guarantee contract. Show hey, every
nickel of that seven hundred million, whether it's what do
they call it, what they put it on.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
When it's delayed, uh.
Speaker 4 (34:25):
Deferred, Chris, they could defer whatever he gonna get every
nickel and I'm just saying I wouldn't play that game
with the Packers. Hey, they want to announce four year
forty eight. I signed a one year, fourteen million dollar contract,
and if I'm lucky, maybe next year they won't cut me.
And you know what I mean, before the deadline when
they don't have to pay me. I mean, I just
(34:47):
all these contracts. Kirk Cousins got one hundred eighty million dollars.
Speaker 3 (34:50):
No he didn't. He got one hundred million dollars.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
A big difference between one eighty and one hundred, Chris,
A big difference.
Speaker 3 (34:57):
Russell Wilson is the prime exa. What did he got
that big deal?
Speaker 1 (35:01):
Russell one sixty five guaranteed out of what two forty
something like that?
Speaker 3 (35:07):
Right, but he's getting his guaranteed money, which is a lot.
Yeah yeah, yeah, but he ain't they.
Speaker 1 (35:12):
Would be able to the contract didn't really even start yet.
Speaker 3 (35:15):
No, I was supposed to start this coming up year,
right right.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
That's all I'm saying is just that it's just it's
just a game that they play and it sounds good.
And I don't know why agents Chris agree with it,
or you know what I mean, I would just if
I was an agent.
Speaker 3 (35:30):
My guy, we got a one year, fourteen million dollar contract.
Well you just said why they agree with it because
they because it.
Speaker 1 (35:36):
Makes it look better for them. Wow, he got Josh
Jacobs got four forty eight. Wow, and Tony Pollard only
got three twenty four over three. So Rob g how
much of like Pollard, how much of his money Swift
three years, twenty four million? How much of those deals
was guaranteed?
Speaker 7 (35:56):
Those numbers are still coming in, you know, when they're smaller, like.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
Twenty six six out of what thirty eight? What was
his number? Thirty seven three?
Speaker 7 (36:07):
Right, and they say, oh, with incentives, he can get
to forty five, but you know the real number was
twenty six. These smaller contracts, because they're smaller, they don't
really divulge the fully guaranteed until like twenty four hours
later because it's not that much.
Speaker 3 (36:22):
Josh. Look, Josh Jacobs isn't coming off a great year.
You know.
Speaker 4 (36:26):
He two years ago he led the league in rushing,
but he didn't get paid that year.
Speaker 3 (36:30):
I'm just shamled it.
Speaker 1 (36:31):
I'm just saying, yeah. But this year, you know, he
just he was down a little bit. I think he
averaged three yards of carry but one year fourteen minutes.
I mean, you're right like that, that's such a huge description.
He averaged three and a half yards of care.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
That's what I'm saying, Chris. That's a big difference in money,
am I right? Like, that's not even in the same stratigy.
Speaker 4 (36:55):
Right, there's a big deal between you making forty eight
million and forteen.
Speaker 1 (37:00):
What I would say, Rob, And and look, I guess
the bottom line is he probably couldn't get it. But
if I'm Josh Jacobs and they're only like Rob g said,
they usually only like to guarantee one year, well, then
give me twenty four million for that year twenty four million,
or you know, we could call it a four year
(37:20):
forty eight million dollars year. Give me twenty four but
I wont twenty four front. Now again, he probably couldn't
get that. He probably took the best deal he could get.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
Rob. No, there's no doubt, Chris.
Speaker 4 (37:29):
I don't think you're taking fourteen million if you had
if you he had other offers. I mean, that's the
shame of it all. I'm just saying it is it
it's comical just to hear the deals and all the stuff.
So many players. I remember in Detroit, Herman Moore had
a big deal. Matt Millen came along Chris as the
GM and he never saw that money.
Speaker 3 (37:49):
Like he didn't.
Speaker 1 (37:51):
You don't think Herman Moore and his family want that money.
Raa saw it right right now. It's it's unfortunate for
these guys, but they're running backside.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Wow are they being squeezed?
Speaker 1 (38:03):
I thought when Philly, you know, three years thirty seven
million for sa Quaid and I was happy for him,
but I thought, wow, they overpaid, they overpaid for it
for that position for him. But it turns out Rob
they really didn't, because it's really three years twenty six million, yeap,
you know, And so that's in line. I mean, he's
(38:25):
he maybe he'll have the most guaranteed.
Speaker 3 (38:27):
That's not that right. But it's not that impressed of
that deal.
Speaker 1 (38:30):
No, I mean that's not that's eight million a year
like that's the thing. Even if they would have played
thirty seven million, that's not a lot of money for
a critical part of your team.
Speaker 4 (38:42):
I would be deflated, man like I like I but
what do you do?
Speaker 3 (38:47):
You know, you're a football player, you're running back. Keep
it locked? And I were left
