R All. Yeah, it is The Odd Couple. I'm Chris
Broussard alongside my partner Rob Parker, and as always, we
are coming to you live from the Guecode Fox Sports
(00:43):
Radio Studios. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or
more on your car insurance. Visit gecode dot com for

a great show for the listeners today, So key bit
locked here on Fox Sports Radio for the next three hours.
(01:04):
Lebron James is saying he is confident that another great player,
a superstar, is going to join the Lakers. He himself
is gonna go out there and do some recruiting. Wait
a minute, huh you mean Kareem Abdul Jabbar's coming out
of retirement. Yes, I don't know what great player he's
(01:26):
getting ahead now, I hope you aren't practicing your jokes
that you use on stand up. That's all I mean.
I just I know, I like Lebron's attitude, you know
what I mean, And even in his admission that he
does need help, I like all that. I just don't
think it's going to happen. Well, we'll get to that.
We also got a great story about I think it
(01:50):
was in Bleacher Report about Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers's
relationship and how really was bad from day one that
Rode just had resentment from Mike McCarthy from day one,
and I just got to throw it out there, rob
and we'll get to it in the second hour. Have
they wasted the bulk of Aaron Rodgers' career? We will
(02:12):
get to that. And then Kevin Durant is he is
this a shot at Lebron? Lebron James is not in
Kevin Durand's top five players of all time? So as
KD throwing shade, is KD being competitive? Is Kadie trying
to get in a competitor's head, or does kad just
really not believe Lebron's a top five player of all time?
(02:34):
Whatever the case, we'll get to that. So we got
plenty of guests to help us with all this. Karan Butler,
former NBA player, and now you see him all over
the place doing his broadcast and stuff. Great job in
his second career. He will join us in about thirty minutes, Rob,
and then Pat Williams, the Orlando Magic Vice president, long
(02:55):
time NBA executive. The NBA started back in nineteen eighty
even he was around. Yeah, how long. He goes way
way back. He was GM back then. I think Chris yep, yep,
he goes way back. So it'll be good to talk
with him in Magic. Of course, it's smack dab in
the middle of that Eastern Conference playoff race, and uh,
(03:15):
we got a few games, we got a few segments
trolling and rolling with Martin Weiss and shop talk and
of course Rob, this is a TV theme song, Thursday,
your favorite day of the Westlide TV theme song Thursday.
Look at that. You already got it queued up. You
knew it was coming first. I've tried, I've tried, giving
up on it. I'm giving up. I've given up. Hey,
(03:37):
let's do the countdown to the cruise. Uh, three hundred
and nineteen days. We could wipe it on every Thursday.
Oh wow, Chris, you're gonna be You're gonna be so
excited that I think you might even want to go.
You're gonna get you so far. I think that's a
(03:58):
bit of an overstad. I told you I'm worried for you.
I don't want you to come back deflate it. I
hope you enjoy it though. All Right, Hey, before we
introduced the odd couple of coul who we couldn't do
this fine radio program without. I just want to send
out a guy who loves our show. Listens, Let's get
a shout out to our Francisco Mota. Um, he's a
(04:20):
graphic designer, uh for working for this guy named Gary
who does T shirts. And you know what he just said.
This guy is the biggest fan of the show. So
I wanted to say that. Okay, let's say hi, all right, Hi,
appreciate the love we do. We really do. Chris and
I are very every time people say nice things about
(04:41):
the program. It really it touches us, It really does,
so thank you. All right, Let's welcome in. Of course,
Rob g is our producer as always, Alex our engineer.
Our sports anchor is Deb Carson. She'll keep us updated
throughout the program as usual, and Iowa State Nate is
our in turn, they're all on the other side of
(05:02):
the glass. Chris Bussard. So let's kick some math. We
had a lot to do and so little time, let's
do it. Speaking of a lot to do in a
little bit of time, that's the La Lakers. You know what,
you're right. You know you got two at most three
years with Lebron James left at the top of his game.
(05:22):
Maybe one we'll see. I mean, the age hits people hard.
What did I say when I said if he doesn't
win his first two years, he won't win just because
of the age thing and all the miles on him
and whatnot. I thought it was very, very important, and
I got the first year. Everybody said, oh, they're gonna
check it out or whatever. But I was like, don't
(05:43):
be expecting to win four years from now. I thought
it would be like, first year, you try to figure
it out, but the second year, you know, you have
to be ready to try to win in that second year. Well,
that's why their sights are set on Anthony Davis, because theoretically,
if you get an Thenny Davis, you put shooters around
him and Lebron, you're in the mix next year. Now,
(06:05):
whether you win it or not, we'd have to see,
but you would be in the mix. And then the
third and fourth years of Lebron's contract, as he begins
to age and fade, he'll still probably still be a
pretty good, you know, a good player. Ad could take
the reins and be the number one guy if he's
got it in him, but certainly he'll be at the
(06:26):
prime of his career and he'll be at the height
of his physical basketball power. So if that's the case,
and you do get a d who right now is
only twenty five years old, then I do think you
might have a shot in that third or fourth year,
just because he's so young and he could become the man,
and Lebron should still be a pretty good player at
that point. I'm I'm just the Lebron impact bothered me
(06:49):
this year, and that's what I'm looking at, the impact
lack of impact. He's putting up numbers, but it just
didn't register. I thought that was the part that when
you look cold him, it would be different, Chris if
he was averaging eighteen, a career low eighteen, and you
know what I mean, and he was definitely, but he's
putting up the numbers and the team still wasn't able
(07:10):
to win and beat some teams that they needed to.
That's what get a lot of that. A lot of
that depends on what kind of stock, and none of
us know for sure. But you put into the reports
that his injury was a lot worse than he led
on and that we were led to believe by him
playing like those numbers were paying dividends before he got hurt. Now,
(07:33):
I know you pooh pooh it because it was December
twenty fifth, but that's three months into the season, and
I know they were only a couple of games ahead
of you know what, seventh or eighth seed in the West.
They were two and a half game from ninth. But
that's fine, but they but yeah, but they still like
before the injury, his numbers were paying dividends. They were
(07:54):
fourth seed. So you know, you're right, and you've said
before all the losses, you know, after he came back
to bad teams, they still had a chance to make
the playoffs. Lebron came back. But again I think that
you know, it goes to how much stock you put in. Okay,
that's just Lebron Now, he's just not the same and
(08:16):
that's why he couldn't carry them to the playoffs even
when he came back. Or do you say, you know what,
that injury was worse than we thought. He was playing
through it and just couldn't do the same things that
he's normally does. And of course you can't just throw
away the impact that the Anthony Davis trades I have
on his teammates, and Lebron has something to do with
(08:37):
that too. So I do have that quote from Lebron.
He want me to read that? Yeah, okay, here's the
exact quote from Lebron where he admits that he needs
another star and basically it's adding another star in Parenthesy
Solds is very critical to me and my future. Obviously
the franchise is going to live forever, but for me personally,
(08:59):
it's very critical because I want to compete, and I
want to compete now. End quote. I think that's that's
he's right when he says I want to compete and
pete repeat, I mean compete now because he doesn't have
a long time and he has to be We saw
some of it where he can't play defense or he
doesn't want to play defense. I'm gonna say he can't
(09:19):
play defense more so than he doesn't want to or
not as well as he did, do you know what
I mean? He has to So when you add that
to the mix, I just I'm just not sure that
there's enough time. And that's why, and I know everybody
doesn't like it when I bring it up. That's really
why Chris I thought the Paul George thing really hurt
because if they would have had him this year, it
(09:42):
would it would have made a huge difference. To me,
they would have made the playoffs. Well beyond making the playoffs. Now,
do I think they would have been Golden State? Probably not,
but I mean they would they would have been in
the playoffs and they would have been right there. I
think with anybody outside of the Warriors, there's no question.
I mean, if Paul George is having the type of
season he's having now, I definitely think that that would
(10:04):
have been the case. But yeah, I agree with you.
I mean, not getting Paul George. Now, Look, maybe he
was just completely blown away by his experience in Oklahoma City.
I think that's a guy we have to look at
if this continues. He may have some regrets. But the
only I mean, things aren't going well there. They're in
a swoon and they probably will go out in the
(10:26):
first round if they get Denver in a two seven matchup.
They got a good I think they got a chance
to beat the Nuggets, but in the first round that's
the problem. The only thing is, and this is why
I don't think he'll have regrets, is that he wouldn't
even meet with them. I mean, when you don't even like,
like there was nothing magic and those guys could say
(10:47):
so it would be different if you if you went
and heard this s field and they told you the
game planet and what they were gonna do, and then
you know what I mean, and then you turned it down.
He had no no inkling whatsoever, no old desire after
for two years talking about coming to LA. You know
what I mean that he did last part of it.
Your last point is what makes and I don't know,
(11:09):
and he may not have any regrets, hopefully, do you
know what I'm saying? Like, well, I see, I disagree
because I think the fact that he grew up wanting
to play in LA. Now I know he was a
Clippers fan, but he grew up winning the play LA.
For he was saying for the past few years that
he wants to play for the Lakers, and then something changed.
(11:30):
But if it doesn't go well in Oklahoma City, are
you happy going out in the first round every year?
You could have been playing with Lebron James and probably
getting almost certainly getting much deeper in the playoffs. What
did Glamor franchise in the city where you grew up?
But he might be looking at it and say, what
a mess and a disaster. That's why I didn't go there.
(11:51):
That being around Lebron is toxic. He wanted to trade
the whole. I'm just saying, look at that the other
way and saying Lebron went to LA and couldn't even
make the playoffs. I mean, wow, well Lebron got hurt too.
I mean, we can't keep dismissing the fact that he
after he after he came back, he couldn't but to say,
(12:13):
Lebron James, I mean half the team. Did you hear
Isaiah Thomas? Did you see his quote? No, a complete failure.
What he said. We've all said that, But there are reasons.
It's not in a vacuum. There are reasons for it.
He was injured, Linzo Ball was injured, Brandon Ingram was injured,
you know, Rayjon Rondo was injured. Then the Anthony Davis
(12:34):
trade saga threw everybody into a funk wherever you want
to look at it, that's a fact. And I'm not
absolving Lebron because it was definitely a complete failure. But
I just it's not going swimmingly in Oklahoma City. That's
all I'm saying. You're in the no man's land and
you're not winning well. But I'm just saying, let's see
(12:55):
how yeah that for four games. You don't know, Let's
see how the four games. No, everything don't have to
be a bet. Just watch it. I just don't All
I'm throwing out is that Paul Jordan. I'm not saying
he regrets it right now. I'm just saying, if things
continue to go this way in Oklahoma City, they were
going really very well. You don't give the Lakers credit
(13:17):
for going very well or not in December. I mean
that was that was That was December twenty fifth. That's
almost halfway through the season. That's not halfway through thirty
four games. That's not halfway almost that's eight games under
that's not even eight games, seven games the midway point.
I just didn't think that they were firm in the
fourth spot and they were gonna be there all year.
(13:39):
I didn't buy into that. So we could agree to
disagree on that. I just wasn't there. I think the
question we want to throw out is, is Lebron gonna
get a free agent you know available? And if sorre
Irving's available, Clay Thompson's available, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Tobias Heiress, Kimball, Walker,
(14:01):
DeMarcus Cousins, who do you think the Lakers wind up with?
And if they get nobody or at least none of
the bigger names, whose fault is it, who's the plame
for people not wanting to play with the NBA's glamor franchise,
And if you'll turn the way in eight seven, seven
ninety nine on Fox eight seven to seven, nine ninety six,
(14:23):
sixty three, sixty nine, we will continue this conversation with you. Next,
it's The Eye Couple of Fox Sports Radio. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Odd Couple with Chris
Brussard and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern four
PM Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
At Farmers Insurance, we know every windshield collision has a
unique sound. Beetle bird boop, drone, seen it covered it?
(14:49):
Doctor Farmers, we are Farmers underwritten my Farmers Truck Fire
Insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable every state. It's the
Eye couple of Chris Brussard and Rob Parker on his
TV theme show Thursday, and we've got some great news
for you. There's a quick and easy way you can
save money. Switch to Geico and it only takes fifteen
minutes to see if you can say fifteen percent or
(15:09):
more on your car insurance. Go to Geico dot com
and see how much you can save. All right, Rob,
we threw it out there. Will the Lakers have the
big summer that they're hoping for? Or could they look
a lot like that next year? Look a lot like
they look this year? They might need a spider man
net to try to get somebody to come to La
(15:30):
to play with them. Because I'm all right, there you
go a rim shot. Yes you know what I mean.
I think it was a pity shot. It ain't pity this.
I'm happy you got one. I'm working hard for your
entertainment dollar coast to coast and this uh and the
States of America. I'm trying, all right, eight seven, seven
(15:50):
ninety nine. You want to get there, Let's start with Chris.
Let's start with Marty in Kentucky. You're on the odd
couple Fox Sports Radio. Marty. What you got hey, Chris?
Rob how y'all doing it? How are you? I? I'm good.
I'm glad. We're talking about the Chosen One. I love
to hate that guy. Here you go. Um. I think
(16:10):
more of the question than it is. Can the Lakers
get two stars to join Lebron rather than one? Because
Lebron I can't see him, especially at this age, competing
with the top of the West without two stars because
he's zero and eight in the finals when he doesn't
have two All Stars, and I think that's kind of
firepower he needs for support and getting two stars. Eight. Yeah,
(16:34):
he's talking about the first time they went with Cleveland
and then right right that the second time they the
last time they went when the Kyrie was gone, right,
but he has not had two All Stars. Now he
meant o and eight in those games they got swept
both that's correct. Okay, So the way I see it
(16:56):
is he's gonna have to have two and it's gonna
be hard to pick two guys when for eight years
with all these people have all these players have watched
Lebron get all the credit when they do well and
then all the teammates get to blame when they do wrong.
And that's that's a hard place to go. That is, Marty,
you're one correct. I think that's what keeps people away.
(17:18):
You know, you're not getting any credit, and every time
Lebron loses is because he doesn't have enough. That's all.
That's all you ever hear. I think it'll be different though,
if they were Let's say hypothetically they get an Anthony
Davis or say a Kyrie came back, which I don't
think it's happening, but let's say that happened. That guy's
getting credit. If they get to the conference finals next year, Kyrie,
(17:38):
a D whoever were to join Lebron is getting some
credit you have to get. Now, Lebron will probably get
the lion share because he is the probably probably well
and probably would deserve it. He is the best player
unless k D comes maybe or something like that. But
I'm saying it's not gonna be Lebron and the Lebronets.
(18:00):
It's gonna be Lebron his second star, then the lebron Nets,
or then the you know, because you're gonna you see
what they are right now without a second star. I
believe it didn't get some credit. Well, we'll see. All right,
let's try Julian and what's Virginia. Hey, Julian, you're on
the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. What you got, Hey, guys,
I just wanted to say that I think a lot
(18:21):
of players are just starting to see the writing on
the wall with Lebron. He's declining. And then they can
also look like, you know, I'm gonna help you out,
But then you want to decide to retire in a
few years, and I'm gonna be left with this team
that just pretty much has no chance to compete, kind
of like how Kobe Brown was after the two thousand
and four season. One shot left. He was left with
(18:41):
a team that just pretty much didn't have any chance
to compete. Yeah, but you can build that team up too,
and you'll be in LA. You'll be with the Lakers.
You presumably will have had some success during your tenure
there with Lebron, So I don't think it's that bad
of a deal for guys. And I also think Rob, Look,
they're certainly guys that don't want to play with Lebron.
(19:05):
But I think the narrative that nobody wants to play
with him is overblown because look, Anthony Davis clearly wants
to play with him. Joe LMBI wanted to play with him,
recruited him to Philadelphia last year. We know Paul George
was willing to go there when Lebron was still in Cleveland. No,
but if Lebron has stayed a longer time, there are
players Kevin durand I'm told Kevin Durant Kawhi Leonard don't
(19:28):
want to play together, not because they dislike each other,
but just there each leary of the narrative of I
went to join him, Katie doesn't want the narrative I
went to join Kawhi. Kawhi doesn't want the narrative I
went to join KD. So it's not unique to Lebron
that certain players don't want to play with him. And
I also think it's not fair to say nobody wants
(19:50):
to play with him when We've seen other stars recruit
him and another star a d try to get there.
I say, nobody wants to play with him. He's supposed
to be Like, does Anthony Davis not want to play
with him? I don't. I don't know. Anthony David said
that he would play anywhere. That's what I don't you
believe that. You don't believe that. That's what he said
at the all. Why is he trying to get out
of New Orleans? I don't know, Charlotte, I don't know
(20:13):
to go to Phoenix. I don't come on Roy with Lebron.
All I'm saying, Joe l MB, did he not recruit Lebron? No,
but that's to go to Philadelphia talking about nobody wants
to come to be under Lebron. They wanted Lebron to
come to them. So it's just like if Lebron goes
(20:33):
to Philly, he's not getting all the credit. No, it
would have been different. It would have been different who
got the credit in Miami? You know who got the
credit Lebron. It wound up because after it didn't start
off that grade. But I'm gonna here's my point, here's
my bigger it's just not fair bigger point. Lebron deserves
a lot of criticism, but you gotta be fair. And
(20:54):
to say nobody wants to play with him, it's not
it's not fair or accurate. You got five up. He's
considered one of the greatest players who ever played. There's
a guy who wanted to get to leave him in Kyrie.
That's a fact. No decided to play with him, but
that's a fact. So he didn't want to be there
even though he won a championship with this guy, and
(21:16):
he's considered one of the greatest players who ever played.
And then this year you list the top five guys
who were free agents and none of them are coming.
Why is that because they don't want to play for
the Lakers with Lebron? That's fine, But to say nobody
wants to play So let's just say Kevin Durant wants
to leave Steph. Is that the same thing. No, he
(21:37):
joined if he leaves Golden Golden State, but he got
to he went there and he joined Steff. So when
he leaves Steph after another championship, are you gonna say
he doesn't want to play with Staff. No, he wants
to go do his own thing. But there's reasons, guys,
half saying, I can sit here's very simple, very confidently
to play, very confidently that none of the top five
(21:58):
free agents are gonna come play with him. That's all.
That's fine, But that doesn't mean nobody wants Okay on
his level doesn't want to Bakers. Nobody on his level
wants to play with him, and we'll sign with him.
This coming off, Anthony Davis doesn't want to play with him.
Anthony Davis, I guess once he went to Rich Paul?
And why did he go to Rich Paul? You could
(22:20):
went to any number of agents. Will will he play
with him? I don't know him? He puts two. It's obvious.
All right, we'll see. That's all I'm saying. Let's be fair.
If the Lakers straight every day, If the Lakes strike
out this summer and free agency, will it simply be
because guys don't want the team up with Lebron NBA
champion Carrin Butler has the answer next, but first let's
(22:43):
bring in Dab Carson for the latest in sports. Dad. Hello, gentleman, Well,
the NBA is fine. Pelicans forward Anthony Davis fifteen grand
for giving that middle finger salute to a fandering last
night's loss against the Hornets. Tonight, Sixers, hosting the Bucks
in Milwaukee, can lock up the top seat in the
East with a win tonight against the Sixers. Tobias Harris
(23:04):
expected to play tonight against Milwaukee, but the team may
rest him for the final game or two of the
regular season. Joel Embiid a game time decision tonight with
knee soreness, and that game tips off at the top

the Heat try to lock up a playoff spot, they'll
have to do it without Josh Richardson. Hillmeis at least

the season because of his ankle injury. The Athletic the

first tap and other college news. Texas Tech men's basketball
coach Chris Beard was named the APS men's Coach of

Women's Coach of the Year. Kelvin Sampson did finalize that

Troy to Lewitsky on the ten day injured list with
a cafe strain. Man. He always gets hurt. I'm telling you,
it's amazing, unbelievable that in fact he is. I think
the eleventh Yankees players placed on the IL season that's something.
But they got they got eleven guys in the first week, right,
(24:56):
too early, not enough, but you know they're Panican in
New York. Well, they don't like that three and four
and the teams that they've lost too. But the three
and four to all right, and they saw last year
that can win a hundred games and still not win
the to remember that, Yeah, it was unbelievable. Boston struggling
even more yea and lost again. They lost to Oakland
as nine. That's right due in fact the Yeah, the

to him to get a free agent this summer, and
he's confident he will. Look, you know, players, you know
what's going on around the league, Well, who's he getting?
I mean, I know you don't know for a fact,
but like Clay kd, Kyrie and Kauhi, in my view,
they're out. None of It's gotta be somebody else. What
(27:33):
are your thoughts on his chances of getting the free
agent bro I totally, I totally agree with you on
that narrative and what you just said, but I also
feel like this. I think that it really like a
lot has changed since Lebron's come to the Los Angeles Lakers,
and I think he was humble, you know, being in
the Western Conference somewhat, and now I don't think that
(27:56):
people are looking at the situation in which they once
looked at it before. Before it's just like, come be
part of the Lebron Jame experience. He's gonna get you
to the finals and then you know you'd be part
of history. But now I think you can be the
needle mover, the guy that possibly helped Lebron, literally helped
(28:16):
Lebron restore the culture and you know in Laker Nations,
and I think that's important. Before I didn't think he
needed no one, but now he actually needs that guy
to preserve him and get him over the hump. So
I think that guys are looking at it like, you
know what, I can come to one of the most
historic franchises in all of basketball history and come and
(28:37):
put my fingerprints on getting a title with Lebron James. See.
I just I think Lebron still will wind up getting
most of the credit because people look at him. So
I'm not so sure. And if you don't do that, Koran,
the problem is you'll be looked at well, you know,
you know you really couldn't Lebron didn't have any help.
That's what we normally here when Lebron doesn't win, even
(29:00):
he has good players. But here's my point. Get me
just just an idea. You really believe he's gonna get
one of the top three agents to that want to
come to LA and want to be a part of this.
Is that is that your gut feeling that he's gonna
get a major star. If you can't get a major star,
be a trade. The A list guys and those guys
are you know Anthony Davis. The list goes on. You know,
(29:22):
they strong, they struck out, they probably gonna swing again.
And then you look at guys like Kevin Duran, Clay Thompson,
and then you gotta, you know, scale back a little
bit and look at the situation that happened to DC.
Will Washington be willing to part ways with a guy
like Bradley Bill, Will Kimba Walker be able to get
his extension or will he you know, being be on
the market Kyrie Irban? Will will he be willing to
(29:46):
you know what? Let by Guns be by Guns and
joined forces with Lebron because they made history together. They
definitely he's definitely gonna get a sit down. I could
see Lebron James at numerous games throughout this playoffs or
behind the scenes in numerous cities recruiting guys and trying
to get a head start on a free agency one
way or another. Karan, I feel like as great as
(30:09):
Lebron's been, you know, playing his style of play, I
like to say he's been in the system wherever he's gone,
but I think at this stage in his career he
might be better suited if he played more of a
traditional small forward, wasn't like a halftime point or part
time point guard, and like he could arguably lead the
(30:31):
league in scoring as a traditional small forward. Get you
nine or ten rebounds, He's gonna get six or seven dimes,
just because he's such a great passer. And I think
it would be easier for other stars to fit in
with Lebron if he had more of a defined role
versus doing everything, Like I don't really like Kimba with
(30:52):
Lebron if Lebron's bringing the ball up half the time
and all that. But if Lebron's more of a true
small forward, then I kind of like Himba Walker with him.
Am I off base in thinking this way? No, you're
not off base and thinking that way because for years
Lebron has been in the system. He's been the button
up guy. He's the guy that gave you that cushion
(31:13):
of you know, if mistakes or marginal error happened, it
was okay because he'll clean it up. But now being
older and still being super efficient with his game, you know,
despite the injury, you know, they was at a four
seed in the Western Conference, but now you know the
margin of error isn't so thick, it isn't so wide.
So now all those things that once used to be
(31:35):
kind of loosely handled, whether it's the coaching, the coaching staff,
the development of players, having the quality of players getting
the way without having a shooter to create that extra
real estate that's possibly needed, and you know, an entire
season and obviously the marathon of a playoff stretched, all
those things have to be tight. You can't get away
with that. And you're playing, you know, not with barrow
(31:57):
time no more. Your window was you know, whether it
was four to seven before, is now two to three
maybe four, you know, So, like the sense of urgency
has to be there for the Lakers in the entire
organization and they have to win in this window. It's
ci couple of Fox Sports Radio, Karan Butler, NBA champ,
two time NBA All Star, and NBA analysts for everyone
(32:20):
including FS one. But let me ask you about the
Western Conference and the Denver Nuggets. Do you do you
believe they can make a long run, that could they
get to the Western Conference finals? How good are they
and do you buy into them? I really love that
the team as a regular season team, and you know
how you get you know, you fall in love with
these teams that come out of nowhere. I remember to
(32:42):
go to State Warriors was like that. They kind of
built that team organically, and then the Splash Brothers was created,
and then you had Draymond Green as a welcome and
addition and other guys, and then andre Ga Dollar in
free agency and it was just a fun team to watch.
And then it happened whatever it is, they found their
mitch and they got the rolling with the Denver Nuggets
right now, I feel like they're a fun team to watch.
(33:04):
Their great regular season team, but I think a lot
of adversity is going to hit because I was on
the sideline calling the game. You know, when they played
the Warriors. That was without Kevin Durant when he got
the technical file double tech got thrown out and you
didn't have the best version of Steph Curry out there,
but he was extremely efficient and they was able to
(33:24):
just turn up and you know, go to a level
where I felt like Denver couldn't go to now. Mind you,
they play extremely well at home. The Denver Nuggets can't
take that for granted, but on the road it's a
challenging in a different situation and I just think that
when it comes to a justin, they have a hard
time doing that on the fly. Karan, I'm hearing strong
(33:46):
that Kevin Durant's going to New York, that people are saying,
people really pretty close to him are saying it's a
done deal, that the Knicks are prepared to make their
draft choice based on the knowledge that they're getting KD.
You may be hearing the same thing. I'm sure the
Warriors are hearing it if I'm hearing it as well,
Do you think something like that? If you agree that
(34:09):
you're hearing the same thing, could that hurt the Warriors
this year in the playoffs or are they looking at
this more as you know what? We know this is
probably the last run, so we're going out with a bang,
one last hurrah. Let's win this last championship together. Could
it be a galvanizing factor or something that could derails
them and makes them fall apart. Yeah, I think it's
(34:31):
a galvanizing factor. I think it really is. You know,
you can't control it's so many uncertainties of what Kevin
Durant is gonna do in free agency, and I'm hearing
the same thing. So if you're knowing that, and you're
dealing with a mature group of individuals because you know,
so many things are going to take on the lifess
on Klay Thompson's free agency, Draymond, will he get maxed
(34:52):
out or will he exercised the right to you know,
probably want to go somewhere else where. He can you know,
get maxed out from a capital standpoint, because he's warn
he's done that. And you know, will Kevin Durant go
somewhere else That's a huge question. But all they know
now is they're together for the foreseeable future, which is
the next couple of months, and they have a chance
to continue to make history and continue to make it.
(35:16):
So you can't tell the story of basketball without mentioning them,
and I think they're trying to confirm that. So it
could be a distraction. But you got a guy and
Steve Kurd that pretty much seen everything played with Michael Jordan,
you know, seeing all the things. He has so many
tactics that he can throw at that ball club that
can keep them, you know, energized and focused and maintained
(35:37):
and throughout the playoff run. Krian Man great stuff is
always we appreciate Hey appreciate. Hey, listen, when they go
to Cleveland and the All Star Game in Cleveland, that's
when I think the NBA is going to rebuild the
next twenty five. I got a question for you guys,
and for you your listener. Who will be the next
twenty five on your list? When you added to the Greatest? Well,
(36:02):
you say, who who will be in there? Yeah? We
gotta could put that list together. We'll have to do that.
Then do that. Yeah, I think you're right, because would
that be the seventy fifth year? Yeah? When they when Cleveland.
I was in Cleveland when they did the fifty I
was that was great. I was there too. Yeah. And
also Karana, next time I see you, you can still
get old me chicken wings. All right, don't forget that.
(36:23):
I got yours. We'll work on that list too. Man's right.
We will and will have you back when we get
that list together. All right? Sounds good? All right? Brother?
Later every time when he comes on, I always have
to rub it in. I think everybody owes you win.
I know, when you bat wings, you win. It's funny,
(36:44):
isn't It's it's crazy. It's interesting. You should just start
betting wings against the Patriots, because then you might win,
I might win. Instead of talking smack on right right,
just bat wings and be humble and you're probably maybe
probably It might help me out. This is it when
it comes to sports cash and it early isn't always
(37:04):
the best idea. We will explain next. It's The Old
Couple of Fox Sports Radio. This is a year where
I'm going to be right. Be sure to catch live
editions of The Odd Couple with Chris Brussard and Rob
Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern, four pm Pacific. At
Farmer's Insurance, we know the sound of a perfect hot
air balloon landing and a Leston perfect one. She covered
(37:27):
it to farmers. We are farmers under written my Farmers
truck fire Insurance exchanges and affiliates products unailable in every state.
I was just thinking that, isn't that what's happening? It
is that's the way. Yeah, I thought, y'all you played
at Alice, good good call. It took a while to
find it. Rob, I'm sure Caron Butler's favorite sitcoms of
a come on name all the name the characters Roger
(37:52):
raj yep uh free run for yep. We are big
Shirley Big Shirley Big Shirley Hempel worked at the diner
or whatever. They used to hang out in d Dda's
sister uh and and what was the Duayne Dyne? Remember
you used to say that was just right right, right right?
(38:14):
You didn't think I get them that. I didn't think
you get them all. And then Mabel King was the mom, right,
I forgot about her. Mabel King, Yeah, I was. That
was a fun show. It was a good show. Yeah,
that was back in the day when anything black you were,
you liked because there was so few black shows, right,
I remember, that's my mama. But I think there are
fewer black shows now than we're back in the seventies.
(38:38):
It was a lot coming well, you got so many
more options now. No, But I'm just saying, like, you
know what, I've got a lot now, you think so
the Empire power, you know, there's I mean they might
be on different cables. What I'm talking about network television,
there's only a handful. Yeah, you got Blackish on ABC
and what else? Empire on Fox? Rob g you watched
(39:00):
black TV? What else? You know? I watching reruns of
the Golden Girls, So I don't know what's all right?
I don't know you. I don't. I rarely watch the network.
You know, Uh, what's the one? Uh? I get Away
with Murder or something like that? Right you ever heard of? Right?
But if the lead is black, I don't look at
(39:21):
that as a black show. I'm telling you to know, like,
because it should be a black cast, like when I'm
talking about Good Time, but the lead the stars black,
I don't. I don't look. I don't call out a
black show. It's gotta be all blacks and in the
hood or something. No, I didn't say it had to
be in the hood. Black Ish isn't in the hood, Right,
You're racist, Chris Bussar. No, I'm asking you, like, why
(39:41):
don't you you don't consider scanting scandal? I agree with
it's not that's not That's what I'm saying, But I
would consider. I haven't really watched. I think I only
watched it one. You have to have you have to
have an over overweight mom to be a black show.
All right. On that note, let's move on Mako. Their
(40:04):
odd Couple is brought to you by Mako. You might
not be able to get a new car with your
tax refund because we know you're getting a refund, but

All it needs is a great paint job. Come into
Maco to day and get your dream paint job during
their tax season sales event. All right, Rob, We saw
the American Alliance or the Alliance of American Football fold
(40:27):
earlier this week, but it doesn't seem like people are
deterred in thinking that the XFL is going to have success.
Clemson freshman wide receiver Justin Ross, who was great in
the championship playoff game against Alabama, he said this, if
the XFL is offering that kind of money, I'm not
sure what that refers to, but good money. That's hard
(40:48):
for an eighteen or nineteen year old to turn down.
If you really need that money, Oh yeah, go do that.
Something could happen, You can get hurt, Anything can happen.
You have to take care of yourself before it can
be over. Just like that. What do you think should
guys go to the XFL they get paid. Nope, not
if you're a really good player. I just wouldn't want
to go to some league just like the AAF. They say,
(41:11):
and I know they have a better backing but I
wouldn't do it. I would stick with the NFL. Of
what I was a good player, that's me. Yeah, I
feel you. I'd want a league this established. So all right,
I a couple of Fox Sports Radio. Keep it locked.

(41:52):
Remember we've got the Orlando Magic senior vice president Pat
Williams coming up at the bottom of the hour. But rob,
let's switch over to NFL football. We've talked a lot
of NBA. But there was a great article today in
Bleacher Report about the relationship between Mike McCarthy and Aaron
(42:17):
Rodgers that of course ended when McCarthy was fired during
late in the season last year. And I thought it
was eye opening, And you know, there was talk of
the report had you know that Rogers really never liked
McCarthy because he remembers when McCarthy was with San Francisco
(42:38):
and they drafted Alex Smith instead of Aaron Rodgers that
as soon as or McCarthy took over the Packers as
head coach, Rogers resented him. There were reports there was
the report said that McCarthy at times would not be
in team meetings. He would let his assistance run them
(42:58):
while he was getting them massage in his office. I mean,
it is a damning paints a damning portrait of Mike McCarthy,
and it's obviously because a lot of people felt like
as the years went on that McCarthy was less not
less imaginative, but he just didn't change with the times,
(43:20):
and he didn't adjust his offense to the new NFL,
to some of their players like Greg Jennings, our colleague
at FS one, some of these guys moving on and
leaving the Packers, and as they lost talent, he never
adjusted his offense and got more and more creative and
imaginative as teams around the league were doing it, and
(43:42):
that Rogers was just win it at times, changing plays,
you know, just ignoring McCarthy's play calls. Just being a
gun slinger and creating stuff on his own, which a
lot of people have watched them and said Rogers is
just saving him by doing it on his own. But
it seems like there was a lot of truth to that,
(44:02):
and it was almost built into their structure as a team.
And the question Rob that I wanted to throw out
in addition to getting your thoughts on the article, I mean,
when I read this, and I kind of felt it before,
but I feel like the Packers have wasted the best.
Now Aaron Rodgers still in his prime. He's what thirty
(44:23):
five years old, He's still got a long way to go,
but he's two thirds of the way at least, if
not three quarters of the way through his career. And
I would argue that they wasted it. You got one
super Bowl with a guy that many thinks is the
best to ever throw the rock at his position. Yeah,
(44:47):
it's hard for me to get on board with that.
Should they have been better in some other areas? I
agree with that one super Bowl and one super Bowl.
A lot of guys don't even win one. Dan Marino
doesn't don't go there. No, I'm just no, I'm just
making the I'm winning in the championship. It means nothing.
(45:08):
I'm not gonna make an excuse. I'm just trying to
give you that I'm I'm trying to look at it fairly,
and I'm gonna say that, No, I'm looking at it
fairly from this, damn you with Lebron and I do
all the time. And that's why I said they weren't
making the playoffs because I looked at it fairly said
they were gonna be No. I did not, No, I did.
I didn't say with three weeks to three weeks before
(45:29):
it happened, I said that what they weren't going to
do it. But anyway, let's just get to this point. Uh,
I think they were. They were in position, and I
get it. With the McCarthy. I used to talk to
Aaron Rodgers after games where they played the Lions, and
the first thing I always say to him would be,
like the play calling, Like you know what. I used
to ask him about the play calling because some of
(45:50):
it didn't make sense to me, right, it just didn't.
And I'm not making this up or telling you this, Chris.
I'm telling you. I used to go right after the
game in Detroit sometime and just be like, well, well,
I just don't understand what's going on or how come
guys are running so much and you get throwing football.
I don't get it. But anyway, McCarthy, I guess they
(46:11):
thought he would have gone quietly right and he won
a Super Bowl and not kind of mess his name
up in Green Bay. But as soon as I guess
he decided that he was going to take some shots,
the organization did what I think they should have done,
which is that they looked exactly and they pounced on him.
Am I right, They absolutely did, and they made him
(46:34):
look bad. He looked bad after he didn't have to
go there because this was the first interview he'd really
given right since he was fired. Yeah, and basically going there,
he said he didn't think they handled his firing the
right way right like he thought he should have at
least got the rest of the season. And no, when
they lost to Arizona as bad as Arizona was in
(46:54):
Green Bay, that's a fireball offense. Chris. I wasn't shocked
that he got fired that night when all the score
that they lost Arizona at home, I was like, okay,
this is it, because remember they hadn't won a game
all year on the road up up until that point,
they were just the team was slipping away. But but
the other part that you're talking about is there were
(47:15):
so many opportunities where maybe they just didn't fix the
defense because they got They had chances to get to
the Super Bowl a few times, Chris, and you remember this.
There was the time that, uh, they were going to
beat Seattle. All they had to do was catch the
on sidekick in that game, and you remember the tight
(47:38):
end knocked it away from Jordy Nelson, remember, and uh
they recovered it. That was That was. That was twenty fourteen.
They were supposed to go to the Super Bowl. They
had but they didn't. But they didn't get there. There
was twenty sixteen, only a couple of years ago when
again Aaron Rodgers played great down the stretch. They were
ready to go. They beat Dallas in Dallas, US thirty
(48:00):
four thirty one. You remember Aaron Rodgers made the great
throw to keep the drive alive and they get the
game winning field goal. They win that game. They go
to Atlanta, the defense the row to Jared Cook, right,
you remember that it was a great throw. They the
defense went up in the huddle according to this, I
believe it. I totally believe it. And then they gave
(48:21):
up forty four points in that game. And then when
I look at their playoffs, every time they got knocked
out of the playoffs. As you go on, it was
either the defense gave up forty points or Chris they
lost it. This is the last twenty fifteen lost in overtime,
twenty sixteen, twenty fourteen, lost in overtime, twenty thirteen, lost
on a walkoff field goal by the forty nine ers,
(48:42):
twenty twelve, the defense gave up forty five points. And
then of course they won the Super Bowl in twenty fifteen,
and then two thousand and nine they lost in overtime
where the defense gave up fifty one points. So all
I'm saying is, were they in the mix during the
Aaron Rodgers? They're run enough when you got Aaron Rodgers.
(49:02):
I just so. So they're winning six Super Bowls, okay,
and Russell Russell Wilson had the legion of boom. How
many super Bowls did they win with with with a
great defense? How many did they win one? Okay? So
when you look at his run, there have they wasted
Russell Wilson, and no, because the run hasn't been as long.
(49:22):
And Russell Wilson is also not as good as Aaron Rodgers.
So so when they did waste, I will say, did
they did waste the one super Bowl they should have
won when he threw that interception? Yeah, I mean that,
I wouldn't say wasted, but yeah, that would They screwed up.
But you should have won that super Bowl. But when
you say that, you're right, he's not as great as
Aaron Rodgers. But he had an all time great defense
(49:44):
that if you had the right quarterback that it could
manage it, they should have won. They should have won
more than one super Bowl, is what I'm saying. If
I look at that run, that's that's comparable. First of all,
that was what a five year period, No, it's longer
than that. Four years with the best defense in the league,
it was about five years. We'll look at it. But
(50:04):
and and and Rogers you had ten years with him.
And here's my thing. If you have you can't waste again.
Russell Wilson is great, probably on his way to the
Hall of Fame, but he's not Aaron Rodgers. Let's not
even I'm not saying that. When you talk about wasting
ye in position a lot is when you have a
(50:29):
talent like an Aaron Rodgers, you have got to go
all out to win as much as possible. And if
you know that the head coach is not showing up
to meetings because he's getting a massage, If you know
that the star quarterback doesn't think the head coach knows
what he's talking about, it is changing the plays, it
(50:51):
is drawing up plays in the huddle, is just scrambling
and making lemonade out of lemons half of the game.
Then get rid of the coach. Only problems are coaching there.
Who can maximize your all time great quarterback. That's what
I'm saying. It was a waste. When you say that
the only problem is they were winning the division every year,
(51:11):
that's not I'm just saying Rogers indivision after the fact,
when they were dominating the division and going in eighteen
yards to go to the NFC five eight, seven and one,
twelve and four, ten and six, ten and six, that's
not dominated. That they won the division like eight times
in the ten and six is not how many in
(51:32):
eighteen how many times did they win the division? In
those years that can't believe you. I don't. I don't
look at it the same way. I don't look at
it the same day after day. I don't look at
talking about how it's championship or bust. I'm not. You
don't give Lebron James credit for going to eight straight finals.
You say they didn't win, and now you're gonna sit
(51:52):
here and defend the Packers pitssport record of one super
Bowl with Aaron Rodgers as your quarterback for ten years.
I don't look at Chris you're talking about in a
you just we just saw this this year with Lebron.
He was playing in a thing where he could get
to h the championship, playing in the Leastern Conference. I'm
(52:14):
not that impressed by that, the eight trips, because every
time he got that division championship, when you have to
arguably the best quarterback, I'm not. I'm not impressed by
going to eight and every time you went to the
you got doing in a division champ you got your
head handed to you. All I'm saying is you had
a coach that won a super Bowl early on in
(52:35):
what do you always say? If he never wait, never one,
maybe I would buy that. What do you always say,
I don't know what. Anybody can win one. There's no
doubt about that, so don't give me. Don't on the
other hand, tell me how McCarthy is so great because
he won one super Bowl. I know what anybody can.
(52:56):
I'm not saying he should go to the Hall of Fame.
But for you to sit here and do a after
the fact of revisionist history to say that, because you're
saying you would fire coach. I went to two NFC
Championships and won a super Bowl. No, Andy Reid, right now,
Andy Reid hasn't won Jack though he hasn't won a
(53:16):
super Bowl. It's totally different, and he's never won. Chris,
what are you talking about? Andy Reid has never won
a Super Bowl? Does not the same You said, fire
a coach. Anybody, anybody, anybody could be can win one.
But you know what, Andy Reid hasn't won one. You
ain't being consistent. I have consistent. They have wasted two
(53:41):
thirds to three quarters of Aaron Rodde, you got one.
Disagree with you? I disagree. You need more. I think
you gotta look at how everything went down To be
honest with yourself, did they not have the best defense.
For him, absolutely got a better defense. But they also
the way that they got to all these placesponsible for
(54:02):
their belief was that they they built their team from within.
They once had a team that had every player was
drafted except for two, and they won. They used to win.
They every one. That's what I'm telling you. One act
like they were winning. You could go back one. You
got a revisionist history and during it was going the truth. Nobody.
(54:24):
You're the only one who said, Andy, I mean, you
only want to say that Mike McCarthy should have been
fired when they were winning divisions. You're crazy, Chris. It
ain't even yes. He I'm saying an organization after they
lost all time great quarterback, after they lost because of
because the guy didn't get to the onside kick, that
(54:44):
you fire the coach. I'm saying it all. I'm saying
it after the fact because I wasn't in. I didn't
know the inner workings of the organization. But if I
know the inner workings of the organization, I know my
all time great quarterback doesn't think that the coach knows
in any thing wasted. I know that I know that
(55:06):
that coach is missing team meetings to get massages. I
know that, da dude, I'm getting rid of him, Don
Shuli Shoussa on your own time. Don Shula should have
been fired then because he wasted Dan Marino's career, right
according to you, I don't know if Don he wasn't
in team meeting they didn't win. Why wasn't in team
(55:27):
meetings they didn't win. I never heard Dan Marino say
Don Shula didn't know what he was doing. I never
heard Dan Marino was ignoring Don Shula's play calls and
and drawing up plays on his own and thinking he
don't know what he's talking about. That's my point. When
you're running an organization and you know this message going on,
then you gotta be better because you cover sports and
(55:50):
you and you know the behin you know the behind
the scene stuff. You know the behind the scenes stuff
on a lot of these teams. And I could go
on and oners I know, I could go on and
on and on about teams that great teams and what
goes on behind the scenes, and there's a lot of
bad stuff that goes on. Who they did, they should
have won more super as one player X teammaking an

article who said Aaron Rodgers should have won six super
Bowls at that time? All right, like the Super Bowl,
but they should have three. Maybe if they were cheating
like the Patriots, they would have won three. Yeah whatever,
All right, did Mike McCarthy and the Green Bay Packers
waste the prime years of Aaron Rodgers' career? Will continue

(59:06):
Let's see what the callers think? Eight seven, seven ninety
nine on Fox all right, seven seven nine ninety six
sixty three sixty nine. Let's start with Jack in Florida.
You're on the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's up? Jack? Hey,
Hey guys, how you doing doing great? I love this show.
I just wanted to say, Rob, I can't believe you're
going to contradict yourself, but you're talking to Chris about this.
(59:28):
You're the one who always says I'm disputed that that
the reason that you think Aaron Rodgers better than Tom Brady,
than Tom Brady wins all these superman never said that, Jack, Jack,
stop it. I'm gonna stop you, Jack, Jack, Chris have
ever said that that Aaron Rodgers is the goal? Have
ever said? You? Never says but you didn't know. Yes,
I'm talking about skills set, skill set, skill set up.
(59:52):
I agree with skills set. I've never said I agree
with that. Yeah, I agree with that. I think Aaron
Rodgers also the skill set. And I think he said
that too. But when you were making your case about
the skill set, when you were trying to talk about
Tom Brady the reason he won super Bowls, you were
saying that that the defense is the one that gets
him off the hook. You know, he doesn't play well
on every Super Bowl. And the reason Aaron Rodgers hasn't
(01:00:14):
won that many super Bowls is because his defense lets
him down time and time again. That's what I'm telling you.
So how can you tell Chris that the reason that
Aaron Rodgers that the Packers have done a good job.
They don't. They haven't done a good job. They' wasted
his whole career. So Jack, So Jack, let me ask
you a question. When Tom Brady win ten years from
two thousand and four to twenty fourteen without winning a
Super Bowl to the New England Patriots waste his ten years?
(01:00:37):
Did they waste his time? Now? And I agree it.
That's why Tom Brady shouldn't be the goal. I think
Joe Montana's to go like you. But that's what I'm
trying to win. Ten years without winning. Brady wasn't as
good as Aaron Rodgers, but he already had. But he
had won three out of four Super Bowls before that.
Chris before the Hill wasn't but before they went before
(01:01:00):
they went through the ten years slump. That's all up,
ten years with out of Super Bowl. That's all I'm saying.
All Right, thanks for the call, Thanks for the call. Jack.
How about Ryan in Texas? You're on the odd couple
of Fox Sports Radio. What's up, Brian? Hey, guys, I
just want to say a couple of things. One I
do agree with you Rob that Tom Brady is the
lot of all time. Okay, he is the luckiest of
(01:01:20):
all time. Yes, he's gotten very fortunate. A lot of
things went his way exactly, especially like last year when
the Chiefs had the game winning interception and you know
lo and Behold somebody was off side. But anyway, about
the Packers, they have wasted his prime so far. And
I'll say two people that I put the blame on,
mostly Ted Thompson gets forty percent every offseason. He would
(01:01:44):
not go steign big free agents. He would just do
the draft. And the two times when we got free
agents Charles Woodson and Julius Peppers, they worked out. So
I don't really understand why he never did it. In second,
Mike McCarthy gets forty percent just he did get stale
his And with reading to that article today, it just
(01:02:06):
shows that you know the team, I as a fan
saw the defense looking soft, and now I understand why
because McCarthy wasn't holding players accountable and it just seemed
like nobody actually wanted to play. And in that article
was something that resonated with me is when they said
Aaron Rodgers went down with his injury, the rest of
(01:02:26):
the players quit because it was basically Aaron or bust,
and unfortunately it's been more bust than anything else. All Right,
appreciate the call. That's what I'm talking about, all right,
Coach k Is College basketball oyalty but did you know
that he was this close, rob this close to jump
into the NBA to coach the magic. We'll get into
(01:02:48):
that next, but first let's get to Deb Carson for

He fouled and then threw the ball at Joe lmbid.

a fifty two forty one lead over Lipscomb midway through
the second half. And other college news, Texas Tech men's

University of Houston's men's coach Kelvin Sampson received a six

Bucks also have some news from the NFL. According to

Pat Williams. Pat, Welcome to the odd Couple. How How
are you doing? Pat? You looking forward to chattingwood? You know,
(01:05:40):
hope you guys are doing well. Now I gotta say
this so I don't off the back Chris. Pat Williams
and I have something very much in common when it
comes to the Orlando Magic. You know what that is.
We were both at the very first game in Orlando
Magic history. I was covering it because you guys played
the New Jersey Nets, and I was the beat writer.
(01:06:00):
I actually covered the first Magic game in the first
Miami Heat game. Well, that's very interesting. I remember it vividly.
It was a Saturday night, the Nets were in town,
and in our very first game before our screaming, wild
excited fans, we almost beat the Nets that night right then,
(01:06:23):
and gave me a heck of a battle and lost
down the stretch. And I remember getting up to go
to church the next morning and I had sunglasses on
because my eyes were so bloodshot. Wow, I do remember.
I'm glad you brought that up. Rob. I want to
throw this at you. Pat. You've been with the Magic
(01:06:44):
a long time. If Nick Anderson hits those freezing why
does that? In Game one of nineteen was the ninety
five finals with the Houston Rockets, guys going to win
that championship. Oh, I think so we had We had
had had Houston that in that game one at home,
(01:07:06):
and we're just whipping him. Well. Eventually in the second
half they caught up with us. But we held him off.
We had a three point lead going into the closing
seconds and they had a foul and they fouled Nick
and good dependable free throw shooter, and he goes to
(01:07:28):
the line. He missed both of them, but he grabs
the rebound amazingly enough, grabbed the rebound. They found him
again time out and then Nick goes back to the
line and miss both of them, and then without a
(01:07:48):
time out, down the court they come and Kenny Smith
kind of gets away from Penny hardaway. He goes up
behind the well, behind the a circle there about oh
I don't know, but maybe eighteen feet away, twenty feet away,
and drills a three at the at the at the horn,
(01:08:10):
and it's tied, and we got to go to overtime. Yeah,
and down this stretch of the overtime, Mali Juan was
a little too much for us, and we lose that game.
And chess, you mean you talk about the air going
out of a balloon. Help And you know what, Nick
was never the same. He was never the same, probably not,
probably not. Now. The way Nick has handled that has
(01:08:33):
been really triumphant. He hated has done. You know, he
didn't go into a shell he faced the media that night,
has felt dealt with ever since. He works for us
in the community area and working in the administrative and
he's beloved in his town and the still hanging in there,
and you're doing well. But I think as his confidence
(01:08:57):
had to be really, really hurt, and he never never
was quite the same. Pat. We got a lot of
free agents coming up this summer, and we even saw
this year Anthony Davis demanded a trade, and who knows
where he'll end up. But I look at your organization
and I always say it, and I don't think he's
(01:09:19):
ever admitted it, but in his quiet moments, Dwight Howard
has got to regret leave in the Orlando Magic. Do
you think that some of these players have to be
careful that they may be thinking the grass is always
green or somewhere else when they might be in a
really good situation, in the best situation for them already
(01:09:42):
to really consider that, like Lebron shouldn't have left Cleveland,
right Well, Chris, let me guys, let me just put
it this way. I think the highest tribute you can
pay to an athlete is that he played his whole
career in one city. That's what I would certainly want
whether it was John Havlicek Boston or bart Star in
Green Bay, or I mean go down there, Racal Ripken
(01:10:07):
in Baltimore. I mean, I think there's something special about that.
But and we told Dwight is that, you know, as
he was searching about what to do, I remember our
owner Rich Devas said, wisely, Dwight, you're loved here, and
that love does not automatically go with you if you
go to another city. Well, he went to la and
(01:10:31):
he wasn't loved there. He went to Houston, he wasn't
loved there. He went to Atlanta, he wasn't loved there.
He went went to Charlotte, he wasn't loved there. Had
as shows only three hours. And then and then we
go to Washington and he's been out all year. I
don't think there's any love there. So in other words,
Dwight does not really have a franchise. It's his own.
(01:10:53):
And then, yes, I think if you go deep into
his mind, he probably would say, you know, I probably
should redo that. But he had people it is a year,
you know, who had convinced him that he needed a
big market, needed to go to a big, big landing
place and that was going to vault his career. Well
(01:11:15):
it didn't. And the sad part is he was absolutely
beloved here. But now you know our fans are you know,
have turned on him. They blew him every time he
comes through here. It's kind of a sad story. I think. Yes, Hey,
it's the odd couple. Fox Sports Radio. Our guest is
Pat Williams, the Orlando Magic Senior vice president. And Pad,
(01:11:37):
you have a new book out called Character Carved in Stone.
It's available everywhere Books of Soul. Tell me about it. Well, guys,
here's what happened. A few years ago. I was invited
to speak to the Army sports teams men and women
at West Point. It was a great experience. They gave
me afterwards a tour of the campus and that was
(01:11:58):
a real joy. Who We ended up in a little
park called Trophy Point that looks out over the Hudson River,
and I noticed in the park there was a stone
bench there and I kept looking and looking and there
were more benches. There were twelve of them. And then
for some reason, I decided to examine one of those
benches and I noticed there was a word that had
been carved into the end of the bench, and I
(01:12:20):
went to other benches and there were words carved in.
They're different words, but they were carved into the stone,
and I thought, there's got to be a backstory here
where there was the west Point class of nineteen thirty
four on their fiftieth anniversary nineteen eighty four, they donated
those benches to the school as a class gift, and
(01:12:41):
they also determined those twelve words to be carved into
the stone, words that they felt were important for west
Point cadets to have you really burned into their souls
and burned into their leadership approach. My reaction was, boy,
this is a well keeps he created. Seemed like a
pretty big deal to me. But I've never heard of
(01:13:03):
this doubt that many had. So I went to our publisher.
I said, I think we have a book here. Let's
let's do a chapter on each one of those words
and then figure out if there's a west Point graduate
that best models that particular word. We asked Coach k
at Duke to do the forward of west Point. Granted
he agreed to do it. So that was really we
(01:13:24):
were pleased, very pleased. So woven through these different chapters
so well, there's Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhoward
Douglas MacArthur, and there's General Matthew Ridgeway and General Omar Bradley,
and Coach K is in there under the word responsibility.
(01:13:44):
We've had a great time putting it together. The book
has just come out and we're greatly encouraged the way
people have initially responded here. Pat, speaking of Coach K,
you had an interesting story of how you almost got
him to become the coach of the Orlando Magic. Can
you tell us about that? Well, when we started up
(01:14:05):
the franchise, we came down here in nineteen eighty six,
and then a year later the NBA granted all four
of our expansion efforts with teams and we were to
start up in nineteen eighty nine and allowed us to
put a staff together and really began planning our coaching
approach early. At this point, Coach K would have been
(01:14:27):
in his early forties and when was viewed as this,
you know, really up and coming, bright, really terrific young coach.
I did approach him and asked if he would be
interested in coaching an expansion team and leaving Duke and
coming into the NBA. Well, it didn't take long for
(01:14:47):
him to respond. He said, this is where I belong.
You know. Thanks, I appreciate it, but you know, I'm
I'm here at Duke. I'm happy, and this is really
where I see my future. Now. Since then, you know,
other NBA teams have approached him from time to time,
but I think he really feels absolutely, you know, locked
(01:15:12):
in at Duke and has for all of these years.
So he's passed all NBA opportunities. But that is true.
Right at the beginning, we ended up hiring Mattie Gukas,
who I'd been with in Philadelphia, and Mattie came down
and before we started and then coached the initial not
(01:15:32):
guess the first four years, three to four years something
like that, and I got us off and winging. It's
tough to coach those early years of expansion exactly, all right,
than Pat, Thank you, We appreciate it. Thank you very much. Guys,
it's good to talk to you. Send your listeners up
to Amazon and check out the book Character Carved in Stone.
(01:15:54):
I'm I'm glad we could chat for a few minutes here.
Thanks you, no doubt. Thank You'll do that. Thank you
pat byeye. Yep, Rob, one of the one of the
real gentlemen in the NBA. You were a little surprised
when I told you I was at that first game. Huh,
nineteen eighty nine. Yeah, And you know what, the league
tried to set them up, multi expansion team, so they
sent the Nets, figuring that it would be like, you
(01:16:14):
know what, they don't want to set a good team, right,
And the Nets started the season two and all, beating
Miami in Orlando. Chris, And guess how many wins the
team had all year two? No, seventeen? Wow, But they
won the first two games of the year and finished
with seventeen. Nice. Yes, all right, it's our most controversial

of Fox Sports Radio, where the guys like to comment
(01:17:45):
on something that happened outside of the world of sports
because we have other interests. We're well rounded individuals. Everybody
here on the show. Now, gentlemen, this next story comes
to us courtesy of New Jersey New Joys One Jersey. Now,
I'm not sure exactly, but Chris knows all about that.
Now this one. Actually the event happened in February, but
it went viral this week because of the social media
(01:18:05):
outrage its spark. Now, what happened was a woman in
a family was traveling from Germany to New Jersey, eight
hour flight, and they let their young child run and
scream throughout the plane for the entire eight hours. Now,
people were recording it on their phones and posting on
social media, and it went viral. Now here's the situation online.
(01:18:28):
The responses on social were divided. It was either a Wow,
I can't believe they let that child do that. They
need to control the kid. What's the parent doing? And
be what the heck is this guy doing recording a
little kid running throughout the plane. That's insensitive. He needs
to mind his own business. So here's the question. Do
(01:18:48):
you have a bigger issue with the parents for letting
their kid run and scream for eight hours on the plane,
or do you have a bigger problem with the people
who were recording it and posting on social media? The
parents studs, it's just not your home. You're in a
private you're in the public place. At home, your kid
can run wild. You're inconveniencing other people. I hated on
(01:19:10):
the plane when I'm on the plane, I'm not an
old grouchy man. But control your children, That's all I'm saying. Right, Chris,
I'm totally within is ludicrous, ludicrous, I'm number one, what
kind of that's terrible parenting? Terrible. I'm sorry. Teach your
kids some dang discipline, all right, especially in public. And
(01:19:33):
my right, Chris, you got daughters too, Yeah, my daughters.
They never would have let them do that. I mean
they actually ended up being well behaved on the plane.
But to have them running up and down the aisles
yelling and screaming where well, how did the plane let
that go on? Like they should have talked to those parents, like,
get your kids under control. That's terrible. I would have
(01:19:54):
hated to be on me too. Hey, dev being a mom,
please him in And you guys are at absolutely right.
This is why parents travel like pack mules. This is
why you have an iPad, snacks, books, right, ben, a
drill anything. You got to control your child on the plane.
You can't inconvenience everybody. Kids kids do cry on the planes,
but you know usually those are little kids and you
(01:20:16):
know a bottle will take care of that. But no,
if your kids a toddler walk, you can walk up
and down the same people do that. That's a nice
way to stretch. But no, the kid can't run screaming
or or if you're a good parent, you would get
some of Chris busaw It's former articles in the New
York Times. Read it to the kid and they'll fall asleep.
(01:20:39):
I got nothing for that, Chris totally fabricated, but a
funny job. The late Luke Perry notoriously traveled with extra
balloons and would blow up balloons to entertain kids on plane.
You gotta do whatever you gotta do. Yes, you know what.
When I was a shoe salesman, I worked at Stride Right,
which was a kid's shoe store. And I'm telling you
(01:21:02):
there's some parents who let their kid run all over
the store crazy. And then there were other parents who
would not even if they were in public, would pull
their pants down, put them across their knee and spank them.
Would just say you know what I mean, like you
can't do that, and that would be the end of it. Yeah,
I've never I mean, I'm just saying I saw it all. No,
when I see kids acting up in public, like I've
(01:21:24):
seeing kids, little kids, you know, talking back to their parents,
yelling at them, the parents sitting there trying to reason
with them, spank them, put them in check, you're the parent,
you got the authority, you know, I mean, this is terrible.
Deb What do you think of a you know, five
year old telling I thought she was way out of
(01:21:46):
line because she told her mother that her shoes didn't
match her person. Wait, the kid told the mom the
shoes didn't match the purse. That's actually kind of funny.
Is that a joke? Or women knowing? D you know
what I'm talk exactly? I think it five. I used
(01:22:09):
to when traveling with my kids. You know, I had twins.
Oh my gosh, it was. It was a nightmare just
because I had to carry car seats. You know, we
put them in car seats in the in the on
the plane. On the plane. No, I'm sorry, we we
we held them, but I had their carriage. I had
to carry their twin carriage. It was it was wow.
I was going through the airport with all that. It was.
(01:22:31):
It was terrible. And how did you get the juice
boxes through security? Fox Sports Radio has the best sports

right right, all right, here we go. KD was on
the podcast recently with remember the Clippers guys, uh, Darius
Miles and Quentin Richardson. Yes, I remember those guys. Yeah, yeah,
(01:23:55):
they still have a podcast. Well, if they got it,
I don't know if it's new. I think it's relatively new.
Whatever the case. They had Kevin Durant on and he
gave his all time top five players, and Lebron James
was not on the list. Now, in fairness, I just
(01:24:15):
gotta throw this out. You can discount it if you want.
I'm going to discount it, but I gotta throw it out.
Two things about his list. Number One, he did say
that he likes to wait till a player's career is
done before he, you know, puts him on the all
time list. His quote is, I like to put these
dudes in there when they retire. That's when I really
(01:24:38):
want to watch Lebron this season. I thought he retired
at the end of the year, okay. I was waiting
to see if Kawhi thought that was funny. I get
Kawhi thought it was funny, but oh man, all right?
Then he said he also said this, which I think
is important, and this may shed some light on his
list as well. He said, I'm really talking about their skills, okay.
(01:25:02):
So he liked to judge his list by kind of
the five greatest skill players. I'm looking at here's a
quote from you. I'm looking at it from a pure
skills standpoint. It's a toss up. Hakim is more my
taste though, And they's talking about Hikim Elija Ran. So
let me give you a list route Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant,
(01:25:24):
Shaquille O'Neill, Hakim Elijahan, and Magic Johnson. And he said, definitively,
Kobe's number two easy in his words, easy number two,
and the proper use of that world would be easily. Yeah,
but easy, easy money sniper. I don't know if you're
(01:25:44):
good g KD. Good. Grammar's essential. That's one of his nicknames,
easy money sniper. That's actually his his handle. What it's easily,
it's not easy. I'm sure that's correct, But I don't
need to hear his grammar lesson from Rob Parker. Don't
you remember, Hey, wait a minute, this is a TV
(01:26:05):
theme song. Thursday, there's a Batman episode and Catwoman is
about she's cat Woman is on like this strutch, just
like thing that's gonna fly out the window right to
get away, and and they were about to take off
and Batman runs into the room and Robin goes, you
can't get away from Batman that easy, And Batman looks
at him and goes, Robin, it's easily good grammars essential.
(01:26:29):
I'm telling you that true. Yes, that was in the show.
That's why Batman was my favorite. Yes, he got the
good grammar, and he got the crime and he had
Catwoman and that's right, all right, there you go. Leather
suit look gonna do. Chris, you sound a little uh,
you know what you said that she was fine and
(01:26:52):
hers was like that leather suit on cat I'm a
little voice right now. He was fine in that leather suit.
You're said, Chris, you might need like a cold towel
or something. All she not? Chris? Were you want? Were
you smoking cigarettes? After watching that woman? Was she not?
(01:27:14):
What was her name? I don't even know who who
that was? There were three cat women the Earth the
kid was Earth the kid, right, I'm not talking about
she was nicely, but I'm not talking her. U Jie
Julie knew Mar, thank you. It might be the one.
And uh the other one was bub who was on
Barnaby Jones, Oh my god, uh Lee Merryweather. Those were
(01:27:35):
the three cat I'm getting it was Julie Niemar. No,
it was yeah, yeah, okay, that she was the main
one that we saw. So was I wrong? Am I lion? No?
I'm just just you sounded a little different than you normally.
I'm just saying that's all I said. I thought. I
just thought to myself, is this a you know, worship
Wednesday or not? But Chris is sounding like a little uh,
(01:27:56):
like he ain't going to Magic City, which next time twisted?
All right, Hey, next year in Miami, Chris. No, I'm
gonna break you down next year. No, you know that.
All right, let's get back to it. Okay, So I'm
gonna give you my quick take on this with k D,
and then I want to get yours. Obviously I like it.
(01:28:18):
I like it now. I don't know if k D
is really just being honest that hey, I didn't even
consider Lebron because he's still playing, or if he's throwing
a little shade Lebron's way, if he just doesn't think
Lebron's one of the five best players to ever played
a game, or what. But I do know this, Kevin
(01:28:39):
Durant thinks he's better than Lebron James. And it didn't
take that jump shot in the game the first finals
appearance between Golden State and Cleveland when KYD played for
him to think that. No, I understand that season thinking
he's better than Lebron and he couldn't wait to show
it in the finals. But that's a nice little piece
(01:28:59):
to have, That's all I'm saying. No, no, I agree,
but I like that, Kad. It's kind of like, Yo,
let's compete. Let's do it. I'm trying to beat Lebron
and all the talk and Rob I said it earlier
in the show. I mean, I'm hearing the Knicks think
they got Kevin Durant. I'm hearing people close to Durant
(01:29:23):
are saying he's going to New York. I'm hearing the
Knicks are gonna make their draft pick first, second, third,
whatever it is based on the knowledge that they got
Kevin Durant coming. So if he goes to the Knicks,
that's just one more sign that Katie wants to compete.
(01:29:44):
He wants to beat Lebron. I think KD is like, Look,
I want to be regarded as the best player of
this era. Now, I don't think he's better than Lebron.
I mean, now he might be, but I mean, like
career wise, if he goes to New York and they
want to championship, people will look at this era if
they went again this year and say he won three
(01:30:04):
in a row and he beat Lebron twice. And he
went to the Knicks weapon won since nineteen seventy three,
and he got that team no matter how it's put together,
and they won a championship. People will look at this
era and I don't know if he wins, you know,
if he wins at least one, but people will look
at this and go, he had more more championships than
(01:30:27):
Lebron had. No, there's no doubt he would if that,
if what you said become a plays out right, he
would have more. But I don't personally think, now, let's
slay they play out. You know, who knows what KD
ends up doing in terms of wins and winning and
all that. But I just think watching them, I think
Lebron's a better player. Number one, or you know, has
(01:30:50):
been throughout his career, and I think number two Lebron
is iconic. KD is not. It's kind of like, and
I'm not saying Brian is necessarily Muhammed Ali, but like
Ali was an icon, I'm just saying Ali was an icon.
Larry Holmes came after Ali and had a better record
(01:31:10):
than Ali and was a great champion himself. Yeah, but
he didn't but you got it. But nobody ever viewed
him as better than Ali. But he beat Ali. Ali
was obviously old when he but he also beat nothing.
But also, and I'm not blaming, he beat Holmes, didn't
beat as Holmes beat some good fighter he'd beat. He
beat a lot of gods. Norton, he not beat him.
(01:31:31):
Jerry Cooney be the great White Hole. He was terrible.
Jerry Cooney had destroyed Text Cobb, all these gods. But
Rinaldo Snipes, no a boxing fans. Nobody was a bad boy,
Nobody Michael speak. Nobody ever thought he was the greatest
fighter he played, no no, but but part of it's
because he followed an icon. And even though he had
(01:31:54):
a better record, even though he beat Ali, even though
there were stories that he used to beat Ali when
they spared a right and Ali was still a champion,
nobody ever considered him better than Ali because Ali was iconic,
Larry Holmes was not. And I'm just saying, I wonder
if that could be end up being the case with
Lebron and KD. I'm just throwing it out, Okay, throwing
(01:32:15):
it out. Yeah, I'm I'm not so sure I'm buying that.
But I would say it just depends if he goes okay.
So for all the people who had an issue with
him going to the Warriors, say they won the three
in a row. So he went to a great team,
and not not only did they he go there, but
they continue to win at an unbelievable rate. They won
three in a row. Say he wins the MVP three
(01:32:36):
years of a row in the NBA Finals with Steph
Curry and all these other guys that are on the team.
And then he decides to go to New York and
says okay, and he wins there, and he turns out
around this sad side organization for all these years and
they won a championship. People will have to look at
him differently. I really believe that that's all. I mean,
(01:32:59):
He's got a chance. And somebody argue he already is.
He got a chance to be like a top ten
player of all times. As rand is incredible. We've never
seen anything like it, you know, and you know it's
gonna be interesting to what he does. But I do
like this. There are a lot of people out there
that think Durant isn't tough. It's soft that he's not tough. Enough.
(01:33:22):
He's sensitive. That's sensitive. That's what hurts him a lot,
because a lot of guys just said, dude, these way
too sensitive. Right. But but also I think a lot
of people think he's just not tough enough to carry
a team to a championship. Because as good as he
was in the finals, he was the finals MVP twice,
you can't really say he carried them. I mean, they're
(01:33:43):
a great team in their own right now, but they
went to the finals too early on, and I know
they didn't win, they lost four to one. But I
think that now, with the experience and all this stuff
that he's done, I think he has a shot. No,
I do too. I'm just saying that right now. That's
a narrative that people have out there that they don't
think he can carry that team. I agree with you.
(01:34:04):
I think he can, but he's got to show it,
you know, And if he shows it, yeah, it could
be interested. I like though, to him coming out with
this kind of I don't want the team with Lebron.
I want to beat Lebron, right. I love that in him,
and we'll see if he can actually do that without
those two light skin brothers and Draymond Green, having his back,
(01:34:25):
So let's throw it out to the callers. Rob eight
seven seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven seven nine
nine six sixty three sixty nine. Do you what do
you think Kevin Durant meant? What does this mean that
he didn't have Lebron James in his top five throwing
Shade wants to beat Lebron, compete with Lebron? And do
(01:34:46):
you like it? So you'll turn the way in and
we will continue the conversation with you. It's the I
Couple Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch live editions

farmers took fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable in

love every Saturday night. I had to watch that, and
we used to in college. We used to watch all
the time. He used to come on in the morning
(01:35:32):
before he went to class, but we couldn't leave to
go to class until after he said, what you're talking about, Willis,
and then we would all just get off books and leave.
We wouldn't even watch the whole show. We just waiting
for that circumstance. Yeah, that was it, all right? This

Limitations do apply, right Rob. We threw it out to
the callers. Let's let them weigh in. Is KD throwing
shade and Lebron Is he being petty? Or is he
(01:36:15):
being competitive by leaving King James off his top five?
Could be? Having seven ninety nine on Fox could be
real talk? All right? How about Lewis in Santa Monica.
You're on the ID couple of Fox Sports Radio. What's
up Lewis? Yeah, what's up? Guys? I actually watched that
whole interview from beginning to end, and he seemed comfortable
(01:36:36):
with talking. He has more genuine conversation when he's talking
to peers and other players, you know what I mean,
as opposed to how he acts and talked with the
inner with the meeting. But I do feel like he
was being genuine and he told him straight up. I'm
looking at it from the skill perspective, and I think
he respects Lebron James, but he don't hold them in
(01:36:58):
the same regard. He don't see them. He don't see
Lebron is in the same classes that list the guys
you mentioned. And he originally named the kimas his fifth player,
but the other guys convinced him that Kareem should be
on that list too. And I just think that when
you when you think about great players, there's two types.
There's the great players that can impose their will right,
(01:37:19):
and then there's the great players that need everybody else
around them to play at a high level to create
the space that they need in order for their game
to be maximized. And when you think about Michael and
Kobe and Magic and Kareem, these guys, if all of
their other teammates were having bad games, they were still
(01:37:40):
going to be great. Do you see what I'm saying?
And I think that's not the case with Lebron. No,
because Lebron has all what was the narrative this year,
he has no shooters. If he has his shooters, he
has the space in order to operate. He has the
luxury of going one on one because he's got four
other guys on the team that demand attention. But he hasn't.
(01:38:02):
He hasn't had shooters throughout his career. He's always had
House Gorby, he had j R. Smith. No, I'm sad
he's had great success without shooters. He didn't have many
shooters his first time in Cleveland and he got to
the finals, he didn't win the championship. But I just
think if you're talking about appreciate it, Lebron's great, whether
he's got good teammates with him or not. And Kareem
(01:38:24):
never won a championship without magic or Oscar Robertson. So
I mean you just got to put things in perspective.
I think a lot of this gets lost, uh in
people that want to try to take shots at Lebron.
Unty Bills won a championship with Ben Wallace. Uh, Tommy
and Hollis was like a defensive record. I know he
won four in a row. Didn't he win like four
in a row? Like Tommy and Florida. You're on the
(01:38:44):
odd couple. That was a great team on the on
the odd couple of Fox Sports Radio. I'm not gonna
stop it. It was a great team. Tommy. What you got?
Oh hey, guys, nice to hear you again, And just
an observation really quick. I couldn't get through right away,
and that tells me that you guys are getting a
lot of listenership. So kudos to you guys. You're really good.
Thank you, buddy. We appreciate it. Yeah, And you know what,
(01:39:07):
we appreciate all the support and guys who are trying
to chime and remember it is your radio show. Well,
I know you guys are at the top of your game.
But I just love the brother brother vickering going back
and forth and reminds me of my brothers to nine
souple of things. Guys. It's I think it's on a
lot of different levels. I mean, Kad was a man
at Texas, Uh, you know, that's a big school, a
(01:39:30):
lot of following, a lot of alumni and stuff. And
then he goes to uh, you know, we go to
the SuperSonics and they go to Oklahoma City and he's
got the brother relationship in Oklahoma City and it's like
it's like russells his little brother and then he leaves
and Russell's you know, he's pissed. Kad had to get
out of that situation. And I don't know as far
as the interview goes with Miles, you know, and obviously
(01:39:51):
Katie goes to uh Golden Golden State. Um. I think
he was genuine, but I think I think he was
slighting Lebron a little bit. Um. I'm sure he was
because I didn't see the whole interview, but just a guy.
Just a feeling I got from him is that, you know,
he's been slighted a long time for being you know,
maybe not maybe outside of the top five or in
(01:40:13):
the top five, a never number one, because it's always
been Lebron since he came in there into the NBA.
So um, but that's okay because everybody knows as far
as the game that Kayd plays in the game that
Lebron plays, they're different. I mean, Lebron did bowl in
the Chinese show. He does have finesse and he can
do anything on the court, but I think KD was
his length. He's a lot smoother, and I mean he
(01:40:36):
doesn't I don't think Lebron has a shot in the
wind as far as hitting jumpers as much as KD
does so and yeah, he's got a sweet stroke. Tommy,
thanks for the phone call. We appreciate it. What about
Troy and Georgia you're on the odd couple Fox Sports Radio.
What's up Troy asking the rider's tour. I've been called
(01:40:57):
for him in him with that respect when you were
in Uh, Chris, we appreciate it. We appreciate that. Oh yeah,
of course I love y'all. Show man. I couldn't been
done without it. But the fact of the matter, KDB yourself.
I mean, if you really want to do and you
really want to go someone, have a conversation with your mom,
(01:41:18):
I have a conversation with your agent, have a conversation
with the people that surround you that's important to you.
Don't make it on the rim about what we say.
Don't make it on the rim about what other people
dictate how you do it. And the comparison about him,
and you know what I'm saying about Lebrun. Lebrenn is
great and everything that is as a man, I respect
(01:41:39):
as a basketball player. I have a couple of issues
with him, but that's nothing important. But I let everybody
else try me in. I'm out man all right, man, Troy, Thanks,
we appreciate the call. What about Joey and Washington. You're
on the odd couple? Fox Sports Radio? What's up? Joey C?
And R? Baby? What's up? That's right? You know it?
(01:42:00):
You are different strokes? Hey, Rob, what's up with some Airwolf? Man?
You remember that? Jam Michael Benson? Yes, Airwolf. We gotta
get that on. We'll get it on. Was that a
TV show? Yeah, Aero Wolf. Yeah, I never heard of it.
You know. Hey, Chris, Hey, Chris, I know you was
talking about Katie's nickname real quick. Let me touch on that. Man. Hey,
he's got three of the best nicknames of all time
(01:42:23):
other than that when you was talking about he got
he got the Slim Reaper, he got the Darantula, and
he got the Missoua and the missou My man, Joey,
I was hoping you were going to throw that in.
You know those are you know what you gave me
an idea for my Bruce Art's big like that best
NBA nicknames of all time. I'm I'm gonna do that
(01:42:45):
probably next week, So that'd be Spud. Would Spud be first? No? No, Joey,
thanks for the call. Can we squeeze one more in?
How about James in New York? You're on the odd
couple Fox Sports Radio? What's up? James? Hey? What's going on? Guy? What?
Thank you? So? How is Durant any different than Mellow?
Let me explain it real quick. Hall of famers all
(01:43:07):
around him, Westborough Hearted, then he goes to step Curry.
I mean, come on, man, like he's going through the
New York. He's gonna turn his step on Marburry. So
you don't think he's better than Mellow. I know you
put Mellow in Detroit and in that time when he
got drafted, melhould have four champions. No, he wouldn't have. No,
(01:43:27):
he wouldn't have Melow was great, I mean Mellow, but
Durant's better. He didn't. But James, he didn't go to
Golden State and just latch his wagon and not do anything.
Was the MVP in the final twice. But don't make it,
but don't make it like he didn't do anything. That's
what I'm saying, but are being petty right in stone
(01:43:49):
shade at Lebron? He left Westbrook? Why to be his
own maning to go on State one championship? The reason
why he wants to leave it do what? Be his
own man? Why would you want to do that? Let's
turn to sate on everyone up and think you're the best.
That's exactly what he's doing. Look, Rob, we've talked about it.
I mean, people, even though KD was great in the
(01:44:12):
finals and all that, people aren't gonna give him the
full leads a team. I get that, I know here
in the finals, but no, we're not. Nobody does. But
we gotta we gotta be honest when you talk about, oh,
he outplayed Lebron, I mean, come on, man, you got
a great system, great coach, three other likely Hall of
(01:44:35):
famers too, certainly with you. I mean, we can't act
like that's not a factor. No, But but Lebron's two
championships in Miami, there was a factor that he put
together this team and nobody as good as the Golden States.
But my point is that's why he was able to
get what he got it. Maybe if he doesn't go there,
Lebron would be looking at one championship and people would
(01:44:56):
look at him differently. No, that's certainly possible. That's all.
I'm just saying. Durant went to a champion already. Yeah,
but they also had choked it down a three one lead,
so did he all right, But I'm just saying, I mean,
you can't throw that out like he didn't do it
the series. All I'm saying is, but that team had
choked down and they don't guarantee, but they were without
(01:45:16):
they a champion if you tell me, Yeah, they weren't champion.
But without Durant, I'm not positive that they would have
won the last two. I'm not positive of that. Well
who Yeah, we don't know for a fact, but I
think they would have had a great chance. But yeah,
it's it's interesting to see watch how this is gonna
play out. Certainly will be interested. All Right. The AAF,
(01:45:37):
the Alliance of American Football is on its deathbed. It's
actually dead, I think, but the trash talk is alive.

or rolling. That's right, trolling or rolling. I'm Martin Weiss,
and I'll break it down for you real quick. If
you're unfamiliar, if the odd couple likes the story, you'll

the story, you hear the troll sounds. Oh man, hey, hey, hey,
(01:48:43):
hey hey. Without further adode, let's get right to it.
Gino ari Emma is one of the best coaches in
basketball history, and fresh off leading the Yukon's women basketball
team to this year's Final Four. Gino had some interesting
things to say about the state of coaching in sports.
He said, quote, the majority of coaches in America are
afraid of their players. He went on to say that
(01:49:06):
players get off scott free and everything and can do
whatever they want, while coaches have to coach with one
hand tied behind their back. Rob are you trolling or
rolling with Gino? I'm trolling? Come on, Gino. Oh man, hey, hey,
hey hey again overreaction, and I don't want to bring
(01:49:27):
up some of the bad stuff that's happened with some
coaches and the unfortunate situation that happened in Maryland with
one of the players down there. There's been a lot
of bad stuff. Players aren't running over coaches and then
I have their hands tied behind their back. I'm not
buying that at all. The coaches have always had the
upper hand and their scholarship on those players in their
(01:49:50):
back pocket. I am rolling with Gino. RM totally rolling
with Gino. Coaches should have their upper hands a coach
all right there. There's a hierarchy on the team and
the coaches at the top. Coaches are bad that way. Yeah,
they're right. I agree there there is a line, and
some coaches have crossed the line. But like a lot
(01:50:13):
of things in society, we're seeing an overcorrection going to
the opposite extreme, just like with toxic masculinity. Yeah, there
needs to be a correction of that that's gone too far.
But some people are going way too far. You can't
be masculine at all in some people's eyes. So this
isn't in the coaching. In the coaching department. Uh, the
(01:50:35):
coaches can yell, coaches, can you know, get on players.
That's fine, there's no problem with that. But I agree
with Rob and one thing, there is a line that
you can't cross. Trolling and rolling odd couple of Fox
Sports Radio story number two. Bryce Harper left the Nationals
to join the Phillies this season and recently return to
(01:50:57):
Washington for a two game series a new should lead.
People weren't sure how he'd be received after spending the
first years of his career in DC. Well, Nats fans
gave him the business, both in the building and on
social media. The mayor even tweeted and deleted a picture
of Bryce Harper photoshop that his benefit. Arnold, you know
the guy who betrayed the United States to England the
(01:51:18):
week before Rob's tenth birthday. Oh wow, he got you
back and was awake for that one. Harper was booed
relentlessly in both games. Chris, are you trolling or rolling
the fans in DC? I'm trolling? Oh man, Hey, you
know who you should be hating on and you know
(01:51:40):
who you should be booing? You know you who who
you should be meming. You know who you should be
dissing on social media? Your own front office. You offered
him a ten year, three hundred million dollar contract with
payments deferred to twenty fifty two. Then you took that
away off the table and offered him twelve years, two
(01:52:01):
hundred and fifty two millions, so less money per year,
less money overall, and wanted to defer it to twenty
seventy two. Bryce Harper did the right thing. He went
for the money. He went for where they wanted him.
The Nationals tront office showed him no love. So boot
the front office, not Bryce Harper. I'm rolling with the
(01:52:24):
fans the DC. They have a right. Hey, somebody walks
out on you, no matter what. You don't care about
the details to play the fans, because he did on me.
I walked out on you. It's not fall now. But
but the fans can't sign him. They wanted him, but
they can't sign him. I agree with you on ownership,
but the fans have a right to boot and let
(01:52:45):
him have it. And you know what he did. He
a bomb the right field into all the Philly fans
who showed up to see his first game in watching them.
But I'm always with the fans. You pay, you do
what you want, as long as it's not be spirited,
racists or anything like that. Buddha Hell audible trolling a
rolling odd couple. Fox Sports Radio last story, grand opening,
(01:53:09):
grand closing. The Alliance of American Football is dead, But
simply because there's no more league does not stop the competition.
Seventy three year old Steve Spurrier was interviewed leaving the
facility of the Orlando Apollos, of whom he was the
head coach, and his first words were, quote, we got
to be the champs. Right. We're seven and one and
the next teams are five and three. Now, there were
(01:53:31):
two weeks left in the regular season when the league disbanded,
but that's not stopping Spurrier from claiming a ring. If
the AF can afford to make championship rings, Rob, are
you trolling or rolling with Steve Spurrier? Trolling? First of all,
Steve Spurrier, you could have lost your last two games,
(01:53:52):
somebody else could have won the other two, right, and
then you would have the same record, and then maybe
they had the tide breakers. So this whole notion that
you would even claim for some mythical league that went
under before even completing the first season. And I know
why Martin added that he was seventy three years old,
because Steve Spurrier probably couldn't even remember what he ate
(01:54:12):
for breakfast in the morning. The idea that you wouldn't
even worry about some league you should be worried about
the guys who had to pay their old way home. Chris,
I mean what you worried about winning the championship in
the defunct league. I'm rolling with Spurry. Oh look at you.
It's about competition, baby, I don't care that the league
(01:54:34):
is the funk. For eight weeks, we gave our blood,
our sweat, our tears, and I want my reward. I
like it. This is what I'm talking about. Let it
soothe you. Rob Parker, go ahead, Queen, that's what they are,
the champions. Steve Spurrier is right, it's about competition. And
(01:54:58):
you know, all right, Rob, you come over to my side. No,
I'm not. And we rolled with it. And you know what,
Steve Spurrier wore his ring out of the stadium because
he had a ring around his collar. That's about the
only ring he's gonna get it. Orlando, you with your agism?
Why got you? You're an agist? How you an agist
when you're old? I'm not old. Fun fact Steve Spurrier
(01:55:21):
winning his coach at University of Florida, University of Tallath Carolina,
and in the Alliance of American Football. Okay, all he
does win, no matter what. That in two fifty will
get you on the subway in New York. Steve Spurrier
was the champion. Give him love seven and one baby.
That ain't easy to do in any league and the
league that doesn't even exist. You know what, I hope
(01:55:43):
that league was so bad. I hope he gets a plaque.
That league was so bad and underwater. If they gave
him a plaque and he dropped it, it would probably
bounce like the checks that they rolled or that know what?
Funny Martin, don't don't don't go on. I'm sorry, Chrissy
caught me off guard. What do they say about broken clock.
(01:56:07):
You didn't hear Kawhi last right, two times a day?
Here you go, Kawhi finally two times a day. Wow
a couple. Fox Sports Radio. Good job, Martin Weiss. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Odd Couple with
Chris Brusar and Rob Parker weekdays at seven pm Eastern,
(01:56:28):
four pm Pacific. At Farmers Insurance, we know the sound
of a perfect hot air balloon landing and a Leston
perfect one. We've seen it, covered it. Talk to farmers.
We are farmers under written my Farmers Truck Fire Insurance
exchanges and affiliates products unavailable every state. You noticed one
of my favorites, Rob Why Queens, excellent sitcom for about
(01:56:53):
three years. Rock them all right? It's the Eye Couple
of Chris Brusar Rob park on a TV theme show Thursday.
Wrapping it up, we brought to you by Little Caesars.
At Little Caesars, you can get a large bacon wrapped
deep deep dish for only twelve dollars. It's rapped with
more than three feet of bacon. Man, I could see
(01:57:13):
I could see you Chris as a ups driver if
you weren't in a sportswriter I can see you doing that. Okay, No,
I'm not sure what that I it's like Durant Lebron.
I'm not sure if that shade or I'll take it, Chris,
I would just shoot salesman. I'm just saying, like, what
job would you have if you if you want in
this business? Let me fash his read Then it's wrapped
(01:57:37):
with more than three feet of bacon, then topped with
pepperonin even more bacon, and only twelve bucks at Little
Caesars available at participating locations plus tax were applicable. If
I wasn't in this job, I might be in the
ministry real time ministon. Yeah, yeah, okay, that's fair. Yeah.
I didn't mean it as like a slide or anything
(01:57:58):
because I apparently you think i'd be working at UPS.
I mean, I'm just you know what, I'm a good
man and women working at you? Absolutely I did it.
Do you know in college I unloaded and unloaded trucks
Chris during Yes? Yeah, I uh, what was your worst
job you ever had? Not worse, but it may be worse,
(01:58:20):
but you know, toughest job. Let me see worst job
probably when I worked at that topless restaurant you worked
at the topless, did you or is that a joke?
A joke? No, we're right, I know. Let me see
worst job I ever had. I loved the shoe store.
Uh that was were you in high school? I was
in high school and when I came back from college,
(01:58:42):
every year I would I would work at the shoe store. Um,
why you think my toughest job was Right after I
graduated from high school. I worked with a friend of mine.
We worked at a factory. I guess my parents were
trying to send me a message, right, you know, get
(01:59:03):
good grades or you'll be working in the factory. The
rest of the scene would be working at UPS. Well
it was this was a UPS. Probably would have been better.
I was out of factory that It was like the
assembly line and we put together and boxed up bed frames. Okay,
so everything from you know, putting the screws and the
(01:59:24):
nuts and bolts and little plastic bags to taking the
frames and putting them on the fire so they you know,
I don't remember how it was, but molded it was.
It was tough, man. It was getting up every morning,
five in the morning to the assembly line with all
these dude, older dudes who didn't go to college, and
you know, rugged and uh it put hair on my
(01:59:46):
chest and made me, made me study hard. You know,
I think you know now that I look at the
few jobs that I did have, because I worked at
the shoe store for seven years, so I didn't have
a lot of jobs jumping around seven years. I worked
to seven years. Yea, they were really good. Those people
were so good to me. Nichols foot form the Prince family,
but anyway it would be the UPS job and only
(02:00:09):
from this standpoint, and I learned really quick. So Chris,
if you work at UPS, and you're unloading the trucks, right,
and you're in the truck by yourself, so you unload
all the boxes. So I'm all done with my big
track the trailer, right, I emptied it. I get out
for a breather, and the supervisor runs over and goes
get in the other truck with the other guy, get
(02:00:29):
in with Chris and help him. So I'm like, my
reward for emptying the truck fast is that I gotta
go help him. So you know what happened after that.
I was never the first one to finish my truck
because I wanted help too, So I that turned me
off to the whole idea of it, because how do
I get penalized by doing my truck faster? So you
(02:00:51):
were like Doug, I was in King of Queen's Yes,
didn't want to move up? Nope, I was done after that.
Were you in college? I was in college? So you work?
When were you working at the shoe store? High school?
High school? But when I went home to New York,
I would do and I did it also in college. Wow,
And they wouldn't have. Did you have summer internships? Yeah?
(02:01:14):
I mean I worked at a newspaper, and you know
what they used to do at the shoe store. If
they called me and asked me to cover a story, Chris,
they would let me off the schedule and say, go
to drive to go to Connecticut. I worked for the
a Grewich Time newspaper and my boss, Shelley Zimmerman, I'll
never forget, he said to me. He said, this ain't
(02:01:34):
Jerky's career. The shoe store goes. If you got a
chance to go cover a game for the paper, just
tell me and I'll let you go. And there's no problem.
We'll get somebody else to work at the shoe store.
That's what he told me and from then on, yeah,
real love and I still have love for those people
to this day. That's good. That's good. All right. It
