This is Connoser's Corner. I'm Jordan Rich and the subject
is coffee. And we're talking with the one and only
George Howell, who was a string of successful George Howell cafes,
and George shares with us how he helped coffee growers
and farmers who were getting a raw deal back in
the day.

To help farmers get out under sustainable living conditions by
producing higher quality for the emerging market in the United States,
Europe and elsewhere. In two years, going to Brazil a
lot and talking to farmers all over Brazil about improving
their quality, I had to figure out somehow how to

make something that's real, and so I came up with
doing an international competition. So we invited twenty plus roasters
from around the world to come to Brazil and cup,
as we say, it's like tasting for wine to the
finest lots of coffee that we had selected. With a
national journey in Brazil, we got three hundred fifty farms
(01:00):
to participate. At the end we came up with ten winners.
We created the first internet auction around the world that
coffee was able to sell for much higher prices than
Brazilian coffee had gone for before. Find farmers who were
dedicated to high quality. Connect roasters around the world to
farmers around the world to produce a higher quality product.
