Speaker 1 (00:01):
Today's Daily Highlight from Elvis Duran in the Morning Show.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
This is Elvis Duran in the Morning Show.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
It is such an.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Honor to have our next guest on for you to meet.
Everyone knows the story. This story incredible and it's you know,
rather than me tell any of it, let's let her
do it, Okay, I think that would make more sense.
Please say good morning to Karen douquay. Hi, Karen, good morning.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Good morning everyone.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Thank you for having me well, thanks for being had
thanks for being on with us. And it's just so interesting.
We're about to talk, of course about Saint Jude Children's
Resehearch Hospital, and of course Karen's son, Jake. As a
matter of fact, we're getting texts doing a big hashtag
Jakie's Army. We've been getting those all morning, so obviously we.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Have a big army. So I'm not surprised.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Well it obviously it got out that you're going to
be on today, and I love that.

Speaker 4 (00:55):
I love that.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
So it was two days ago, Danielle here in the
room with me and Nate. We had hopped on a
plane and flew to Memphis to do yet another tour
of Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital, Karen, and we've been
there several times and every single time were reminded of
the importance of Saint Jude, and we also learned new things.
And then I heard this morning that you're going to

(01:17):
be on with us to tell Jakie's story and no
one can tell it like you. So do you want
to just go from the very beginning and share it
with everyone here because everyone's dying to hear this. This
is gonna be great.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Yes. So when you were at.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
The facility, I'm sure you were on the grounds and
there's a big in the middle of the facility in Memphis,
there's a courtyard that has hope, and that's what Saint
Jude provides to everyone. So our son, Jakie, was diagnosed
at four years old with a cancer and it's a
terminal a cancer and it's called the fuse in tristic
ponting glioma and the abbreviation of that is DIPG and

(01:53):
it's terminal. So our son went from fishing on our
backyard to being told that he had a terminal cancer
tumor that they gave us nine to twelve months of living.
We went from being in Miami on a Thursday and
relocating to Memphis, Tennessee on a Sunday.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
We were blessed to be able to go to Saint Jude.

Speaker 5 (02:13):
And I always say that no one wants to be
part of this world of cancer, pediatric cancer, but if
you are part of it, Saint Jude is the place
to be.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
It is like heaven on earth.

Speaker 5 (02:23):
And when you're in Saint Jude, it doesn't matter your
economic standing, your ethnic.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
Or your religious beliefs.

Speaker 5 (02:30):
It is your child is fighting for their life and
they're giving you a fighting chance, all while doing research
for other kids. I am the biggest advocate and cheerleader
and champion for them because I know that a lot
of people speculate does it really go back to the child?

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Does it really go back to the family?

Speaker 5 (02:47):
And one hundred percent donations go back to the family,
and I am living proof of that. We have a
very big family and an army and a following and
which started this morning.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Letting you guys know the love and what we did.
It was while we were.

Speaker 5 (03:01):
There, and we were there for eight months, we invited
them all to come up because we wanted not only
for them to experience Saint Jude, for themselves, but for
them to also be advocates and champions of Saint Jude.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
We've been able.

Speaker 5 (03:14):
To let everyone know and I will to my time
breath know what amazing things they did for us.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
So although our.

Speaker 5 (03:21):
Child was diagnosed with terminal cancer, our son had a
fighting chance. But not only that, they took out an
extra viral blood to do more testing to give another
child better odds. You know the amount of research and
the amount of fundings that it takes for these research
to be able to find the cause. And the biggest

(03:41):
thing is is that unfortunately childhood cancer, it's always thought of, oh,
it doesn't happen to my child, or oh, you know
that happens to other people, but it's happening. Forty seven
children daily get diagnosed with childhood cancer and those numbers
are growing.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
It's a scary number. But Saint Jude gave us that hope.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
And there's a reason why that that garden is it
has hope in.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
The middle of it. So our experience in Saint Jude
was amazing.

Speaker 5 (04:08):
We lived in ron Madannel House and we were there
and our son we were blessed for her to be
during COVID. So yes, we had our family come out.
But then once COVID got stronger, we didn't have to
share our son, and our son not once thought that
he was dying. In fact, if you, if you buy
any chance to lipped in front of him and said

(04:29):
Jake's sick, he would tell you I'm not sick. God
made me better. So we are our family of faith.
And it's crazy because today is his birthday and exact
today's birthday. Today is nine years old in heaven. And
my daughter is a huge advocate of your show. She
listens to it in the morning commute with her daddy.

(04:50):
Leilah's eleven, So we have an eleven year old.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Oh my gosh, I just thought back to what we've
been talking about today.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Well, yeah, listen, she listens to all the shouls and
all the drama, the roads. Uh.

Speaker 5 (05:04):
She loves it though. She loves it, and we are blessed.
Two years after Jak passed, we found out we were pregnant.
We have a rainbow baby.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Host name is Sessi. So we are a family of
five and we are.

Speaker 5 (05:16):
Huge advocates for Saint Jude because the way that they
do things and the way that they care for children.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
But most of all.

Speaker 5 (05:24):
I always say that the world, if we had a
little bit of Saint Jude and everyone, we would realize
that they have such empathy and compassion for those children
and those parents that are going to somewhere, you know,
basically as a last hope. And I mean in Ronald
McDonald house, we met so many different people and in
the clinics and it's Saint Jude, and you would literally

(05:44):
see whether it be Mormon or you know, people from
you know, from overseas, or you know, people didn't speak
the language. There's blue phones in each of the hospital
of the rooms and basically those phones are translators that
will be able to accommodate any any language that the

(06:05):
family it feels comfortable with. Not only that they do
research for the child, but they did they tested Jakie
on different genes and they found out that he had
something very rare and it was a mutation basically called
our wire one malignant hypothermia, and it basically is if
you're exposed to gas and aesthetics, it's very dangerous. And

(06:28):
they extended that testing to my husband, my daughter, and
myself and me and my daughter have it.

Speaker 3 (06:33):
That's some five percent of.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
The world has it just because of their research, they
were able to do that to us. So now me
and my daughter now know this knowledge that we would
have never tested for.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
Well that's what you know they do, you know, Carring,
your point is is so incredible because Saint Jude shares
info not only with other scientists around the world, around
the world.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
They were saying when we were there, like they would say,
like say, we're doing some research on loompho, but then
all of a sudden, we see something about another cancer,
So we might not be doing the research on that cancer,
but we'll take what we learned and send it over
to people who are doing the research on what we found.
And they said, it's just incredible how much sharing goes
on and how many things we learn from it.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
Yeah, and that's the thing is, I'm actually on the
board right now of how to share news and reports
and diagnostics with the parents for Saint Jude.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
And it's a research that they're doing.

Speaker 5 (07:30):
They're always doing research and there's always growing but a
lot of their researchers are past patients, right, so you
know that they got treated there, or a lot of
people that work there were patients, so they got treated there.
And they came back to continue the cause because listen,
it takes we believe it, mustard seed faith, But it
takes so many people to.

Speaker 3 (07:49):
Move that needle.

Speaker 5 (07:50):
And as long as we're moving the needle for a
cause and avoiding one child to go through something, because
we shared the knowledge and we shared the research, then
why the hell not we?

Speaker 2 (08:00):
You know, that's what's so interesting about this. A lot
of people listening right now, and maybe parents listening who
have children who are not going through cancer, maybe saying, well,
I don't know if I would ever need to pick
up a phone and call Saint Jude or do anything
with them ever again, because I lost I lost my child,
But Jakie who passed away, you're still on it. You're

(08:21):
you're fighting very hard for Saint Jude. So can you
explain to everyone, Karen, to everyone, Karen, why why?

Speaker 3 (08:27):
It's a great question.

Speaker 5 (08:28):
I've actually been asked that, Okay, because I didn't lose
my child. My child was My child had a bigger
purpose of which maybe it's harder for me to understand,
but I know he had a bigger purpose, and he
started a movement that I cannot ignore. Look at today
his birthday, I could be selfish and not want to

(08:48):
talk to anyone, but this call of action, I cannot
turn away because Saint Jude did give me a fighting
chance and gave my family that hope that when no
one when basically I was told it was terminal, and
they never.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
Once treated him as a terminal patient. They treated him
as a patient that had to fight a chance.

Speaker 5 (09:06):
And for those reasons, I will always fight for Saint
Jude and I will always try and my hope is
that one day we do find a research for a
cure for this terminal cancer. Diffuse interesting funds in glioma,
because if that means that one parent doesn't have to
do what we had to do with our child, then
you know what my job here is done.

Speaker 3 (09:24):
And I contributed towards what my son started in US.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
And you know what, there's a lot of people that
do work at Saint Jude now that are former patients,
and that's because Saint Jude does have just such a
high success rate. I'm on the board for the Saint
Jude Country Cares radiothon we do every year where we
turn over our iHeart radio country stations for two days
to Saint Jude and we fundraise and I've been there.
And when you meet the people who Saint Jude has saved,
and when you see the parents who, yes, like you, Karen,

(09:49):
have unfortunately their child lost the battle, but yet they
live on, their memory lives on forever because they're doing
good for other kids. And it's very brave and strong
of you to not say that, you know what, I
lost the battle, I'm going to get out, yet you
continue to fight on in Jaki's memory and that is
absolutely unbelievable.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
Amen.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Amen, absolutely as well.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Karen.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
Uh oh my gosh, I love that. I love I
love the sound of children sounding curious, totally plugged in
with a moment like why are you on the phone, mommy, aget,
what are you doing? You're talking to Uh? It just

(10:32):
like we said earlier, it just so happened today, the
ninth birthday of Jakie who was in heaven, and having
you on is just it's a blessing. And to hear
your passion for Saint Jude, and us having visited Saint Jude,
we understand why you have the passion even more it's
it's it's an honor again to have you here, Karen,

(10:52):
Thank you so much, for your time. Thank you very much.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
If I can just add, whenever you don'ate, they give
you sometimes the shirt that says this shirt saved lives.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
If you ever have a doubt, if you ever have that.

Speaker 6 (11:02):
Opportunity to give back, please give back to Saint Jude,
because it does go back to the patients, to the child,
to the parents, and to research most more importantly, So
please get back because I'm I'm living proof that Saint
Jude does give families hope and are doing. You know
that that research light is never off because they're always
trying to find a cure for that next child. So

(11:24):
thank you so much for having me this morning, and
happy for day to Jakie.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
There you go, Karen. Okay, thank you so much. Thank you.
I have a beautiful, beautiful day to day. Take care.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
Okay, I'll have one too.

Speaker 4 (11:34):
Well, there you go.

Speaker 2 (11:37):
You know, every single patient, every single family has a story,
and you just heard it an incredibly powerful one.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
So brave.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
Keep in mind, absolutely keep in mind, families never pay
a penny all the travels taken care of for them.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
They're put up.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
For instance, in the Ronald McDonald House is the one
where they stayed in Memphis, And by the way, that
is the only Ronald McDonald house in America that is
assigned to a hospital. One hospital.

Speaker 1 (12:05):
They have different rooms for like different sized families too,
like oh yeah, everything. If you need more than a
couple of bedrooms, they have it, a longer stay.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
They have it all, and they share the information with
other countries who are fighting the battle and not winning it.
Like they are winning it the year.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Their new goal now is like we're doing so well
here now, thank goodness. And obviously they're still doing so
much research, but other countries not as good as we
are here. So that's their new goal is to help
those other countries and.

Speaker 4 (12:31):
Look into the future.

Speaker 2 (12:32):
Not only is it about curing all these different types
of cancers, it's also coming up with ways that these
currently patients are going to have a great life ahead
years down the road. I mean, it's so advanced, so
there's not enough, not enough time in the world to
learn about everything they do at Saint Jude's. So if
you want to help us, we've already done it. We're

(12:53):
going to do it again today. Become a partner in hope.
It's simple if you text Elvis E Lvis for those
who need a spelling Text Elvis to sixty two sixty
two sixty two. You'll get their brand new this shirt
Saves Lives t shirt and it's easy to do. They'll
send you a text back or give you a they'll

give like a big oldload of money right now. You
can give a dollar, you can give it whatever, whatever
you want to give. Text the word Elvis to sixty
two sixty two sixty two and get the ball rolling.
Any thoughts from anyone.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
I just to get that that woman is just amazing, man.
The fact that she wants to save so many more lives,
you know, and unfortunately lost hers. She is she is
brave and strong, and my goodness.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
There you go. Text the word Elvis to sixty two
sixty two sixty two.
