Speaker 1 (00:00):
Uh do you mind where? Uh we're playing through Here's
Froggy and Whacker. It's another addition. I'll be playing through
podcast at Froggy Radio on Instagram and Twitter at playing
through podcast on Instagram. Here with Brian Whacker from Golf
I just at Bryan Whacker one. So another really good

(00:22):
tournament in the books, Brian and Memorial turned out to
be a pretty good tournament. There is so much going
on in the golf world. Where do you want to start. Well,
let's start with the Memorial, because, um, you're right, that
was pretty good. Patrick can't lay beaking pretty good a
final round record at that tournament, which is pretty stout

(00:43):
when you consider some of those players he beat, not
just this past week, but with that final round score.
Of course, Tiger Woods is one of their multiple times,
and even he has never gone that low in the
final round, so can't lay really impressive. I Mean, this
is the guy people I think forget that early on
in his career he was touted, as you know, basically

(01:06):
for superstar and this was this was one of the
best college players out there. You know, went through some
physical problems with his back, the tragic story of his
best friend and Taddy getting killed in a car accident
right in front of him on a hit and run.
So he's gone through a lifetime's worth of difficulties, if
you will, between the back issues and everything, losing you know,

(01:30):
his best friend in front of his eyes. And if
you remember, he had a pretty solid Masters finish, he
was leading late on Sunday afternoon. Yeah. Absolutely, I'm just
gonna run through it these last handful of stars. I mean,
he ended up tying for ninth at the Masters, bounces
back the next week, finishes in the tied for third
as hilt in Head tied for third at the p

(01:51):
G a that was sort of lost in the freight
of another another. Brooks kept a dominant performance and what
happened there. Then he wins the Memorial and does it
with a final round six before again a fantastic brown
coming from you know, I believe it was what seven
back they're about. Yes, So my question is yesterday, how
do you look at it? Did Martin Kahmer cough up

(02:11):
the victory or did he go and take it away
from it? Yeah? I think he he took it away
from It's hard to be the final round six before. Look,
that's a difficult, of course, it's it's hard to put
up a good score. And again, Patrick is a player
who has been on a quite a run here this
last month or so, so clearly in good form. You know,

(02:34):
Martin Kahmer has really had a fascinating career from the
standpoint He's got his multiple major champion yet has has
fallen into the abyssess times in his career. I'm more
than one occasion. So yeah, I mean he's got three
victories to two majors and the players, I mean, that's
three pretty good tournaments to win. And then yesterday was

(02:55):
on the cusp of his fourth right, So to me,
it was more about how Patrick played incredibly steady down
the stretch, uh and did what he needed to do. Yes,
there's a lot of things going on to the golf world.
This week we move on to the RBC Canadian Open. Uh,
Dustin Johnson, you're defending champion, will be in the field.
It will be our first look at Brooks Kepta since

(03:17):
Brooks won the PGA Championship. How good is the field
in Canada? We usually don't you know, get this for
this event, usually different time on the schedule, but I
get Dustin Johnson. You mentioned Brooks JP playing the risk watch, Uh,
you know is on for for JT who missed the

(03:39):
PGA Championship because of sort of lingering risk issue. I
talked to him about it actually about a week or
so ago and and he said, you know, the risk
is doing okay, it's fine. It was more precautionary than anything. Um. Yeah,
Rory McIlroy teeing up Matt Future playing so so a
pretty loaded field in Canada this week. So we gotta

(04:01):
once again, I keep saying it. So much going on
in the Gulf world, the U s g A, the
US Women's Open. Congratulations to I don't I don't want
to mispronounce your name, is it Young? Yeah? I think
that's pretty accurate. What to put in in Lee number
six in the fascinating story. Of course, there's a lot
to get into with this, but the Korean LPGA Tour
and your number of players with that last name, and

(04:23):
so they used the numbers at the end of their
last name, six of them to identify, so fans could
identify with them back home when they're on leaderboards and
so and so forth. So Le number six, my question
is why is she number six? Is it now does
it go by the first name is is so A
gets one? And then it goes down like why is
she lead number six? Like now that she won, she

(04:45):
should be lead number one? Right? Yeah, really you know
she should be lead number one. That's a good point
with that. But you know it's finishing its six under
by the way that we so arm going on there? Yeah,
it was, so you want to get into it, you
want to explain it. The US Women's Open unfortunately, uh
more talk about something that was said by who who's

(05:08):
been on the podcast before Hank Haney. There was I
think there was more news around that, unfortunately than the
amazing play that was going on there at the Women's
US Open. Uh do you want to handle that whacker?
Nothing like just you know, do do I want to
jump on the stove? That is? Uh royal? Right now? Sure?
I figured that you tend to be a little more um,

(05:28):
you could handle a little little more eloquently than I can.
That's very kind. Look, part of me doesn't want to
give more attention to it in the sense that what
Hank Haney said was inappropriate. I don't in flat out wrong.
I think I understand the point perhaps that he was

(05:50):
trying to make. But that said, I think it came
across completely inappropriately. I think it came across the sexiest
where racist. You know, there are undertones to it. So
to me, it was completely inappropriate what he said, and
he's been suspended from serious sex m for the time being.

(06:11):
His show is under review in terms of how long
that suspension will last in or if he will ever
be back in there. Quite frankly for them, but he
doubled down right, this is where I was thrown for
the loops. So, I mean, the initial statement I thought
was wrong, um, and I thought, well, I really didn't

(06:33):
know what to think of him, But then after she wins.
So so first let me get to the fact he
did make an apology. Said this morning, I made some
comments about women's professional golf and it's players that were insensitive,
and then I regret and it never to make a
point about the overwhelming success of Korean players in the tour.
I offended people, and for that I am sorry. The

(06:53):
highest respect for the women who have worked so hard
to reach the pinnacle of their sport, and I never
meant to take away from their bill at least and accomplishments.
So I understand that, But then he doubles down after
Lee wins and says, see, I was right. My prediction
that a Korean woman would be atop the leaderboard at

(07:14):
the Women's US Open was based on statistics and facts.
Korean women are absolutely dominating the LPGA tour. Do you
ask me again? My answer would be the same, but
worded more carefully. And then he followed that up actually
with another tweet that looks like it has since been deleted,

(07:34):
where again he congratulated her on the victory, but sort
of went on to say, you know who's the great
predictor now, Steve Johnson, of course, the producer of the
show and co host. I knew a lead would win,
So again, head scratching doesn't even begin to cover it,

(07:56):
you know, and I'm not sure what the thinking was
behind it, But again, just this has become a bigger
story for all the wrong reasons, as you mentioned earlier,
and uh, it's unfortunate, but I think the steps that
were taken we're probably appropriate, you know, given given the
scenario and who knows where this goes from here. I

(08:18):
think this is still an ongoing story yet to be finished.
But clearly, you know, just just wrong. It's just you
just cannot say it was poor judgment what he said. Yeah,
definitely poor judgment, said the wrong way, even even if
what he did mean to say and what he meant
to convey is that the Korean women are really absolutely

(08:41):
dominating the tour. I understand that, and I understand that
if that's what he meant to say, but that's not
how it came out. And then to double down after
she wins really kind of to me negates the apology
of Hey, I'm sorry for what I said. You're not
really sorry. When she wins, you go, yeah, see I

(09:01):
told you I was right. I mean, it really kind
of takes away from the apology. But either way, Um,
congratulations to her. The U S Women's Open is in
the books. We have a champion, and now we will
after the RBC Canadian Open, we will move on and
we will do the men's US Opening. I just want
to review, by the way, what we've had in among

(09:25):
other things. Of course, we're only into June now. At
the beginning of June, we've already had Chief Skate Gate
with with Matt Kucher, we have we have Lucy Lee
situation with the Apple ad in the U s G
A and how that's got handled. We had the story
of a when we're genocidal leader playing in a prom
of the Pebble Beach. We had all the new golf

(09:46):
rules now fews if you will. There were Saudi Arabia.
There was Sergio Garcia. There was JB. Holmes is slow play.
There was a backstopping controversy on the LPGA. There was
mocking of the new rules. We at a yardage book
d Q. We have the U s G A sort
of Twitter spat between the U s G A and
Justin Thomas. We had the Sergio Matc coucher kerfuffle during

(10:11):
the match play. He had Tiger winning the Master's fifteenth
major in this first one in over a decade. There
is Morris Saudi Arabia controversy with Carly Booth and her
endorsement deal. There was, of course the books kept Brandel
shamblade man spat if you will. Uh. There was John
Daily riding in a car at the PGA Championship. There

(10:35):
has been various Donald Trump controversies, including one where his
Jim scores were hacked apparently uh. And then of course
Hank Kany another matc Coucher controversy and another third one
with trying to sort of finagle his way into a
favorable ruling from from the fairway uh this past week

(10:55):
at the Memorial. So it has been a busy year
for golf, saying things have been a little busy and
we're only halfway through, yes, and it's been very little
about the actual golf everything else. So with the US
Men's Open, just, uh, what do we ten ten days away?
We'll start that. I did see a story that you

(11:15):
did for Golf Digest where there is a lot of issue.
There's been some talk of the boycott word uh and
included We know Rory has been involved. We know Dustin
Johnson was also a name that I did not know
was involved, but that came out I believe in your story.
We know Justin Thomas has had his issues with the
U S g A, We know that Phil Mickelson has

(11:37):
had his issues last year at the U S Open.
What exactly, if you can kind of sum it up,
what is going on with these players and what is
their issue with the US Open? Is it the golf
course set up? Is it money related? What exactly is
the problem? What's going on? And where are we headed?
Is there a city in this multiple choice? Because I

(12:00):
say all of the above and then some yeah, I
think if you, if you? And again the story that
you're referencing Cooper piece by myself in my colleague John
Hugging for Golf Dodges in the latest issue, which you
can pick up or you can find it online. Of course,
the story with the U s g A Confidential where

(12:20):
we spoke to over fifty people players, coaches, caddies, broadcasters,
a number of people intimately involved in the game about
what exactly the players feelings and everyone else's feelings really
are about the U s g A, about the US Open,
why there have been a number of controversies that have happened,

(12:43):
particularly in recent years, and it covers it really runs
the gamut. It's everything from you mentioned money in terms,
and from that standpoint, look, the players, to a man,
I think all feel like they're playing for plenty of money.
They're not graping there. But when the U s g
A signed a hundred million dollar television contract with Fox

(13:07):
about five years ago, the purse initially did not go
up at all, and so they're sort of wondering, well, look,
we just signed this larger television deal, which is one
of the benefits to that generally is you know, that's
where some of this purse money comes, right, So there
was no increase in the person Initially it sense went
up and it's sense going up again this this um

(13:29):
it will go up more this year another five thousand dollars.
So there was that aspect of it. Of course, there
was the golf course and everything from some of the
venues they've gone to. You look at Chambers Bay, you
look at Aaron's Hills, golf courses that are not quote
unquote typical US Open golf courses, and by that I
mean type fairways. I don't think Brooks had a problem

(13:50):
with Aaron Hills. I think he was a fan. No, no, Brooks.
Brooks clearly did not, and nor did several other players.
You know, the USGY if they're if they're going to
try to please everybody, they're going to fail every year
at that because the tour players, uh, if you're around
them enough, you're never going to please all of them.
There's always going to be some faction of them that

(14:12):
has an issue with one thing or another. But it
was everything from logistics to uh, what they felt was
an overall arrogance or ego to the golf course set up.
And you look at last year's US Open as an example,
when you went from Saturday and everything that happened there,

(14:32):
from the from Phil Nicholson's antics to the U s
g A admitting they've made a mistake and they let
the golf course get away from them, a golf course,
by the way, that they have been too plenty of
times before, are intimately familiar with it, played multiple US
Opens app before in Shannekak Hills, and yet there was

(14:52):
an issue where Saturday guys struggled to keep balls on
certain greens, and then Sunday you had easier, much easier
pen placements and a golf course that played to a
man completely different than it did the day before. So
I think there's just been a wide array of lack

(15:14):
of relationships with the players and players and rural staff
on the PGA tour too, as I mentioned the TV
issue with the money and first eyes. But do you
really see you've seen you know, I saw in your story,
I saw the boycott word. So could you really see
a scenario where I know we're going to go to
pebble in ten days. Rory says he's going to give

(15:36):
them one more chance if they don't get it right.
Could you really see a scenario where guys the statue
of Dustin Rory, justin Thomas. Could you really see them
sitting out at us open in short? No, And I
say that knowing that that we had in the story
that there was a boycott which was discussed. Now, I

(15:58):
think there's got it's hes be looked at with the
nuance because remember this came in after the fiasco with
Dustin Johnson and being hit with a two shot penalty
for ball moving on the green that he didn't cause
to move. And they later changed the rule on this,
by the way, but it was born out of that,
and it was born out of frustration over the TV

(16:19):
money and a number of other things, and there was
talk of, hey, we need to do something. That there
was a player or two involve that were sort of
the ringleaders, if you will, of it. And some of
the names that came up in the story were Dustin Johnson,
h Rory McElroy. I believe Phil Mickelson name came up

(16:39):
later as some and again he's a guy who has
been critical of the U s G again lately, um
and for a long time and long before last year's
antics on the Green at Chennecox. So, look, do I
think that there would have actually been boycott or there
would be this year? I think the only way there
would be is if something drastically wrong happened. So you're

(17:03):
not seeing it happening after I don't at Pebble, uh No,
I don't see. It would have to take something really,
really drastic. And even then again we're talking um, you know,
it would be twelve months until the next he was
still open. Now again, there was talk of a boycott,
but I viewed that, and I think we viewed that

(17:25):
within the context of the story as more of a
threat than something that really would have taken place where
they close to boycotting, I don't think so. Was it
talked about absolutely where the players mentioned involved on some level, Yes, absolutely,
and the there was a group of players or some

(17:46):
of the players did go to the PGA Tour commissioner
Jame Onahan as it sort of said, look like interveewed
on our behalf. We really don't want it to come
to this, but we really need to get the message
across the u s g A and the u sg's defense,
they hired Jason Gore Now to be a liaison between
its organization and the players on tour. Jason a very

(18:08):
popular player. He's a contemporary guy that a lot of
players know, a lot of players have good relationships with.
So they're hoping I think that he can bridge the
gap between some of the issues that the players have
brought up. But again, if if we have another issue
at Pebble Beach and we hadn't hearn about it last time.
The last time they were at Pebble Beach in there

(18:29):
was you know, various greens there that players had issues with, right,
And so that's my question. Do you think when they
arrived at Pebble in ten days, are we going to
see a I don't like to use the term easier,
but are we going to see a more fair setup
than what we would have seen possibly in the past
because of all these issues. I think the set up

(18:52):
from all you know, all reporting and everything I've heard,
it sounds like it will be a typical US open
Pebble Beach and by and large there, you know, Pebble
Beach has been controversy free of these things for a
number of reasons, because there's only you know, one of
which is there's only so much you can do to
Pebble Beach, and some of that is dictated by whether,

(19:14):
of course, you know, really the greens are the only
place you can really kind of have things get out
of handed Pebble. Um, the fairways will certainly be conched
in more than we see when the tournament is there
in February for the A T and T. It'll be
a different golf course, the weather is different, everything is
different compared to when the event is held in February

(19:37):
there but by and large part Pebble being the golf
course that it is, you know, I would think that
they should be able to avoid any sort of controversy.
But again, um, there's been a number of issues really
since two thousand and fifteen, and there's been other years
as well prior to that where there have been issues.
So you can only you know, fingers crossed, but you

(20:00):
can only hope that there would not be issues yet again,
particularly coming off a year in Shinnecock where I think
a lot of people expected them to get it right
and they mostly did until we got to Saturday, and
then of course on Sunday as well. Um, and again
more problems arose. Right, So we're gonna get the Pebble

(20:20):
And as you know, we've already seen the betting favorites,
and Jack at the memorial said that he believes the
Tiger Woods is a favorite going into Pebble Beach the
US Open. And I'm until somebody Knox Brooks capta off
of this major run that he's on. And I'm not

(20:42):
saying it's going to continue forever, I'm but I'm saying
right now he's not showing any sign of weakness. Do
you believe? So here, I'm gonna give you the Vegas odds. First,
Brooks is first, Dustin is second, Tigers third, Rory is fourth,
Justin Roses five. Then you get down to Sin Thomas, Ricky,
followed John Rom, Jason Day and speak our next. I

(21:05):
have two issues with those odds. Do you think Roy
McIlroy is the fourth best chance of winning the US Open? No,
not from what we've seen so far, because look, I
expect him to play well there, but I would not
list him on my short list of three or four
guys right now that I would expect to win there.

(21:26):
That said, look, Roy's talent is off the charts. Certainly
turn up and have a week where he plays better
than everybody else and wins the tournament. He's got that
level to just kick it into another gear. And that's
a place you know he should you would expect farewell.
But but no, I mean, I think it starts with

(21:48):
bricks kept. I mean the guys won the last two
US Opens on two very different golf courses. Now, has
he played this golf course? Has he played Pebble at
the TV usually played that event? I don't believe he
usually plays there now, No, and I know Dustin does.
Dust is a two time winner. And remember, like you said,

(22:09):
he almost won the right well not but the US
Open Dustin was was leading. I'm sorry talking about the
US Open. Um. He was leading through the first three
rounds there and then of course imploded in the final round,
a disastrous the holes wiped out his day and didn't
break Katie. But but no, to me, Dustin is a

(22:30):
guy like he's wanted Pebble Beach before. Granted again during February,
different different golf course, but it's a place that suits
him well. Clearly he's played well in the US Open
there in the past and books kept because not all
that different a player from Dustin Johnson. Sort of a
better version right now of Dustin. Now, where do you

(22:51):
put the Brooks? Those are the two guys that I
look as sort of co favorite. Where do you put
Brooks's performance in importance on how you feel about him
heading into the Open this week at the RBC. Not
a lot of stock. I mean I expect him to
play well. He look look at his last three starts.
He won the p g A at the last time
we saw him before that at the Nelson, finished fourth,

(23:14):
was in contention there all weekend and then the Masters
of course had a chance to win that tournament until
they put it in the water. You know, he looks
at the players he didn't play well, but again at
golf course that maybe doesn't particularly suit his game. Mrcott
at bay Hill again, of course that probably doesn't suit
his game. On the Classic was second there, so he's

(23:38):
you know, top ten, did Opic Dabby early in the year.
So this is a guy who plays well almost every
time he tease it up. So I expect him to
play well in Canada. And although I don't put any
stock in it, I mean that's ridiculous, Like we've seen
so many guys turn up and play well in a
major coming off anything from contending to a miss cut.

(23:58):
So I think Brooks his game has been in good
shape all year, So I would put, you know, almost
no stock and how he plays this week, I expect
him and Dustin to both be right there. One of
those two is going to be there at Pebble Beach. Right,
let me ask you another question. So Tiger wins the Masters,

(24:19):
we don't see him for a while. He showed up
looking very tired at the p g A. We did
get a better look at the Memorial, played well in
the fourth round, faded slightly on the back nine on
Sunday afternoon. But where do you put Tiger's chances at
the US Open? I know he plays very well at Pebble,
He's won there before many times. He plays well in

(24:41):
the US Open. What do you give the chances of
Tiger this upcoming week at the US Open? I mean,
how do you not consider one of the favorites given
everything you just said, right, I mean, he's he did
look very tired at beth Page, But I don't know
if I think that was a lot of probably not
being able to condition and be for prepared the way

(25:01):
that he was. As you had said that you had
spoken to joelah Covin some other people, and he prepared
for six months for that Master's tournament. That was what
he wanted so bad, and there was a sole, focused,
laser pin point focus on winning that golf tournament and
he did it. So maybe it was not he wasn't
mentally prepared physically prepared at the p G A. Where

(25:24):
do we stand here at the US Open. Well, he
certainly looks like he's in better shape in both of
those areas, physically and mentally. He looked at the way
he played the final round of a memorial good around there. Um,
So there are a lot of good vibes. There's a
lot of good ball striking with him, which is important.
How the US Open in particularly at petball, and again
it's the place he's that suits his game and suits

(25:47):
his eye well a lot like Augusta National, in a
place where even though it's the US open um, you
know he can sort of manage of avoiding really big
numbers where you look at a place like beth Age
and you hit it a bit crooked there and you
could be in some trouble and he won't need quite
the same length. Particularly the Pebble is playing sort of

(26:09):
fast and firm, and um, you know, so again it
could be really weather dependent on how well he plays,
but I would expect that he'll be somewhere in the
mix at some point. In contention there, right, That was
my question is does he not have to hit a
lot of drivers? Can he hit some three woods and
some long irons off of teeth? Yeah, I mean you'll
see it right off the bat on the first hold,

(26:31):
you'll you'll probably see a a long iron or or
maybe a three wood. But yeah, it's a place where
he can not hit driver quite as often as you
would at a place like besth Age. Best Age is
almost completely different track than Pebble Beach. It's a big,
sort of brawny golf course where you need to hit

(26:52):
it a mile and um, you don't really need that
at at Pebble Beach. Right, it'll be good to see.
All right, Well, we've got another week in the books.
Once again, congratulations to Patrick Cantley and his victory at
the Memorial. We have the RBC Canadian Open, and we've
talked about how we've got Dustin Johnson and Brooks kept

(27:12):
in the field this week as well as Couter's in
the field, Justin Thomas is in the field, Roy McElroy
and others. So we got a good tournament this week
and then the US Open and we'll see if Brooks
Kepca can continue this torrid pace that he's on and
put another major in his pocket or will uh some
of these other guys you know, wouldn't surprise me a

(27:32):
bit to see Dustin Johnson up there at the end
on Sunday either. Will you be at the US Open, wack.
I will be there first thing Monday. It's a it's
a bit of a slog to get there. It's from
the East coast because you've gotta fly into San Jose,
which is the closest sort of big airport, and then
it's about a ninety minute drive from there to Pebble Beach.

(27:53):
So I will be uh keet on the ground on
Monday morning early afternoon and reporting from there all week
for Golf Digests. So you can check that out on
Twitter as Brian whacker one, on Instagram saying name Brian
whacker one, and of course golf digest dot com, where
I will have reports all week, and yeah, I'm excited

(28:14):
about the Pebble Beach is one of my favorite places
probably anywhere in the world, and one of the great
golf courses in this mans just in this country, but
on the planet. Just terrific golf course. And I'm fascinated
to see how this US Open plays out and fascinating,
as you mentioned, there's a million storylines everything from the

(28:36):
U s g A and how the US Open play
out too. Kept trying to win three in a row,
which would be he'd be the first guy to do
so since Willie Anderson, going way way back now to
Dustin Johnson. Will he You know, it's fascinating to me
that Dustin has just one major. I mean, here, Brooks
is kind of just stead right past him and laughed him.

(28:59):
And dust has long been talked about and there's you know,
there's a lot of similarities between those two players, but
Dustin amazingly still has just one major championship. And uh,
you know, Tiger, what what it stills you there? And
again I look at Pebble as a venue where he
will really sort of gear up and focus and should
play well because of just how how well it suits

(29:23):
his game and his eye. Uh. And what's gonna happen
with Rory or you know, and what's gonna happen with
your favorite player at Jordan's speed if he sort of
rounds into form heading into uh the third major of
the year. So well, I'd also like to point out
that from my fellow Tiger fans, if you remember, Brian
going to a tournament is good luck for us. He

(29:44):
was in Atlanta when he won the Tour Championship, he
was at the Masters, and now you will be You
were not at beth Page. I want to point out
you were not at beth Page. So for those of
you who are superstitious and thinking that there are certain
things that need to be on our side, Brian being
in person at a tournament, his presence does make a difference.

(30:04):
So we need you to be a pebble piece. A
Tiger can get victory number eighty two and Major number sixteen.
All I roote for UH is for them to finish
on time and finish on Sunday. And you know a
good story of course, uh. And there are a number
of those that could play out this week. One sleeper

(30:26):
that I'd like to give you though, before we go
is don't sleep on Xander Shotley. This is a guy
who has played well in a number of majors, very
similar to Brooks Cepka in terms of his major resume.
Obviously doesn't have any majors yet, but prior to Brooks winning,
he had shown up and played well in some majors.

(30:47):
And we're seeing kind of a similar trend with Zander.
And this is the California kid. He's he's a really
really good players, played well in the US Open in
the past, um a number of other majors, so I
would not be surprised if he's in the mix sometime
on Sunday, or of course Patrick Cantley, a guy who
just won this past week and Memorial and is on

(31:09):
a hot run and really likes Pebble account. Another California
kid who who should play well there. Good deal, Wagger,
Thanks so much for your time. We will talk to
you next week live from the US Open at Pebble Beach.
