Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us live on the line right now is Caleb Burke,
who is indeed running for the Labor Party.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Good morning to you, Caleb.

Speaker 3 (00:08):
Morning, Katian Gadata. All your listeners now, mate, We've.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Got seven minutes and a series of questions. Are you ready?

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Yeah, mate, let's do it all right. Why did you
decide to put your hand up to run?

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Well, Katie, So, I left Defense in twenty seventeen, moved
back to the territory post offense and sort of embedded
myself into the community. So I've got involved in a
lot of the sporting clubs around Palmerston. So I've coached
out at the Raiders, done some time at the Bagpies.
Currently I'm now out at Molden Oval. I know that's
been a hot topic on your show recently, so I've

(00:41):
been with the Sharks and the crops out there and look,
just listening to all the issues throughout the years of
what's going on. Some people have asked me as well,
you know, why don't you put your hand up and run?
And I've just been waiting in the background having a
look at it, and I think one of the key
things that made my mind was Eva Lawler. So her

(01:02):
decisive direction and leadership is definitely one of the the
key reasons I'm running being ex Defense. Her mission statement
out there is let's get the territory working, and look,
that's something definitely I can get behind and support one
hundred percent.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Now, based on your previous work experience or work that
you've done in the community, why do you reckon you're
the best person for the job.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Yeah, So look my previous work experience over a decade
in Defense, so I was a tank commander as well,
also deployed to Afghanistan when I was nineteen, so I
do have some leadership experience. Did two and a half
years as a recruit instructor. Now currently I'm the union
addictus for the aw in the Northern Territory, so working
on negotiations out there in the oil and gas industry,

(01:47):
supporting our workers rights out there. But more importantly it's
being in the community. So I'm out there every day
that we kicked off our preseason on Monday for the
crops and actively engaged in the community, listening to them
and you know, always putting their concerns first above my own.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Now, in terms of what you see is the biggest
issues in the electrode. I'm assuming you've been out on
the doors. What are people telling you?

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Yep, four feet So I've been out on the doors,
door knocking a lot. The first thing is surprised. Look,
they haven't really seen a member of Parliament knocked their doors,
so I was quite interested to see that Lee has
been out there country. To all the Facebook posts, you've
been in every other electorate but our own. But look,
the biggest one is crime. So we've got property crime,

(02:32):
people breaking into the houses. Another key issue with anti
social behavior, and that's contributed to secondary supply of alcohol.
So you know, they're definitely the forefront of the issues there.
Quite recently, it's been broached to me is sort of
my stances where I sit on the voluntary assisted dying space.
So look, I'll come out clear with it my conscious

(02:54):
so it will be a yes if I'm elected into government.
I've got my many reasons for you, but that's the
short format. And then also what about the reproductive rights
of people, So that's come up quite recently. In short,
I'm pro choice, shouldn't believe government should be involved in
those decisions making processes, nor should men in the government
be in charge of those decisions.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
So they are the biggest issues being raised at the moment.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
Yeah, currently, so crime, the any social behavior. Like you said,
those two as of the last week, the reproductive issues
and the voluntary assistant dying space have been questions asked
me and to want to know clearly what my stance
was on them. All.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Right now, why do you think you're the best person
for the job?

Speaker 3 (03:40):
I looked to put it bluntly, I'm not a yes man,
so I'm not going to give people the answers they
want to hear. And additionally, you know, throughout my career,
I've always value added to a team. If there's a
problem there, I'm not just going to come up there
screaming that there's a problem. You going to provide solutions
to that or work with the committee and get the
solutions to the problem, not just screaming that there's something wrong.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Now, based on some of the issues that you've spoken
about just before, and the concerns being raised on the doors,
how would you get stuck into trying to fix those issues?

Speaker 3 (04:13):
Well, I can talk about one that we're trying right
now really hard to and that's the sport. You know,
I'm going to bring it back to that, and I
see it a lot in our community. You know, there's
just some directionless kids out there that need good role
models in our community. And that's why I'm sorry invested
into our sport in the junior sports especially, And I'll
go to that mold and over issue. So you know,

(04:34):
if they're not getting direction from an adult, they're looking
to someone who's going to tell them what to do.
And now I've seen it firsthand. A sixteen year old
boy comes up and tell these kids, Hey, you know
there's no coach here, let's go and throw rocks at cars.
So off they've gone when they've tried to do the
right thing in the first instance. So you know what
we're really pushing out there is, you know, we need
some role models in our community. Step up, give these

(04:56):
kids direction and tell them the right thing to do.
Otherwise this is going sheep and following anybody who tells
them any sort of direction.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Now we've still got a couple of minutes, so five minutes,
so two minutes to go.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
But why should people vote for you?

Speaker 3 (05:11):
Well, like I said, you know, I'm no nonsense to
the problem. I'm under no illusion that it is a
tough seat to win. I heard it constantly, there's a
very safe steal piece seat, but I think leader has
taken that for granted over the eight years of being there.
You know, I'll give you a straightforward answer to some
of the decisions. Look, they will be weighed and measured
into my why I've come to those, But it's always

(05:33):
put in the community first, what the electric wants. It's
not specifically my need. It's listening to all those voices
and tolating the answers and then putting that to government
and saying, hey, this is what spill it wants and
this is the community expectation to be done.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
Caleb's still got a bit over a minute to go.
About a minute twenty five anything else you want to add?

Speaker 3 (05:54):
Yep, I personally earned quick so I could give a
great shout out to Jacob Brandt, the president, all the Trocks.
You know, I heard all through this the start of
the mold and Oval, but look, he needs a big
shout out for all the work he did in the
background there to get that oval back where it was.
Like I said, we got our pre season started off
on Monday. I'm the head coach of the women's but
also a junior coach so well, and is to call

(06:17):
out everybody as well. If you're not involved in the
community club, put your hand up, get involved to be
a volunteer. It's great for the community and you've make
great friends as well. So that's my biggest shout out
to everybody. Just put your hand up, be that role
model for these kids. Let's turn their wives around and
give them the proper direction they need.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Hey, Caleb, but while I've got your mate for we've
got forty seconds left. I hope you don't mind me
asking how is the mold and over looking out there?

Speaker 2 (06:41):
Are you guys back on there? Able to train again?

Speaker 3 (06:43):
Bloody green? Mate? Yeah, training on Monday which was great.
So unfortunately for the women's team who like coach, it
was a lot of cardio. But yeah, greatly appreciated. But look,
all that hard work done in the background unnoticed, definitely
needs a shout out and great work to all those involved.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
Anything else you want to add, You've still got ten seconds.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Look, mate, I'm back in ebri in one hundred percent.
Like I said that cleansition statement, get the territory work
in something I can back in and let's get it done.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Well Kayler book the ALP candidate for the Seed of Spill.
It good to chat with you this morning. Thanks so
much for your time.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
