Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, yesterday we heard news that Canderby Cricket they had
changed around the captain.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
C Cole mc conkie, who we've talked to quite a lot.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
Over the years, will retang the T twenty captaincy, but
Henry Nichols fifty eight tests for him, he will become
the Planket Shield captain, which is your longer vision of
the game and your fifty over Ford Trophy captain, and
Henry joins us. Henry, good morning, congratulations, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
Thank you. Yes, obviously, you know, Cole's a fantastic job
for so long and nice and obviously he's still doing
the T twenty stuff, but you know, from my point
of view, it's just trying to build on, you know,
what he's done so well for the team. And you know,
there are very strong squad again in this season which
will hopefully look to contend with all three titles that
we did last year.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
I mean, I would have thought, you know, with all
your international play and all your Canterbury play, et cetera,
that you would have been thinking about the game anyway
and you would be a natural captain, is what I'm
saying in my eyes.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
Yeah, and I think that's probably you know, you know,
on who plays the game long enough, you pick up
things along the way and you try and I guess,
you know, add add to the group and help whoever
the captain is. So, you know, I'm looking forward to
officially being the captain. And like you said, I think
you know, you're always, you know, trying to you know,
have an impact on the game, even even if you're
just in the field. So I'm sure that's what you know.

(01:13):
With the experience God Canary do have, I'll have lots
of lots of options in terms of, you know, advice
from other guys while we're out there.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
And is that basically your philosophy, Like, you know, do
you have a particular way you want to captain?

Speaker 3 (01:25):
No, I think, you know, in terms of from the
Cannary point of view, I think I'm pretty lucky with
so the experience gold we do have both, you know,
with the batting and the bowling, and I'm not looking
forward to I guess working with the bowlers, especially a
bit more on on I guess the technical side of
things and working with them as opposed to me coming
in with with the ideas of what they should do.
You know, they've got enough experience that we can work

(01:47):
with each other and you know, certainly in the one
day competition and especially in the pot as you know
it is you know, it can be a test over time,
and I think nothing really changes in terms of a
team point of view, even though I'm taking over the
the leadership role.

Speaker 2 (02:01):
Have you had much captaincy experience?

Speaker 3 (02:04):
No, no, nothing. This is the first time will be
doing a picious the Canterbury So like I said, I
guess the nature of when you're coming in and out
of it with with international stuff over the years that
it's sort of you're not really too available for too
many of the campaign. So certainly for me exciting to
be starting the season you know, at the front and
hopefully win the first toss this morning will be good.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
Well tell you what, it's pretty unofficial, but I think
that when you are the captain it does lead to
bigger and brig by, brighter things and the aspirational part
of getting back in that Black Caps lineup must be
your part for you.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
Oh absolutely, I think it's you know, still a shrongpoon desigre.
You know, it was nicely part of the Test series
over the winter in Zimbabwe and you know, I certainly
feel like in the last couple of years I have
been playing as good a cricket as ever. So I think,
as everyone knows, when it comes to any sport, radio
selection is out of your hands and all you can
do is just try to put your best foot forward.
So you know, I'm looking forward to obviously the batting

(02:59):
part of the season, but also hours the CAPSI side
of things as well, being able to help guys and
work with guys obviously in a more official capacity.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
And of course it's more mentally fatiguing being the skipper.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
That is what all captains have told me, from Cole
through to Peter Fulton, so that is something to look
forward to.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Well, interestingly, even though we didn't get to finish some
of the T twenty Internationals recently, the first two games
on Hagley Oval, what did you make of it, because
that's where you're going to be playing against the Tago,
aren't you this weekend?

Speaker 3 (03:27):
Yeah, and I think it will be on the same wicket.
So obviously they didn't get the full copping on the overs,
but you know, it's a slightly used surface but it
did look really nice when we were down there at
training on Friday, so Yeah, interesting to see how that plays.
And I think the wedding to be nice as well,
so that's it's a nice change for all the cricket
fans out there.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
So two Canterbury are Tigo matches, right, so you you
start at what ten thirty?

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yeah, that's right, ten thirty. So what time was the
Rugular at seven?

Speaker 2 (03:52):
At four? It's at four five.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
Past little four.

Speaker 3 (03:55):
Gosh, we might both teams will be well, I mean
from out point you hopefully we managed to carry up them.
But oh that's a bit of a shame a m.
I have to just catch the results at the end.
Hopefully do the Canterbury double right.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yes, well there we are, that's what we're going for.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
So that's what you think will happen clearly in the
Ford Trophy fifty over and you've got the match across
town and it is the NPC final Canabary Otago, so
gotta predict there.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Do you watch the rugby at all, Henry, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Big rugby fan, I think, like most most guys kid
growing up, Yeah, rugulars probably the first love. So yeah,
I mean obviously Tiger had a fantastic seasons, well haven't they,
So it's a pretty cool. I think five of the
Southern the Southern clash. But yeah, I think as we're
provailed in a few tit ones this year that I
think Canterbury probably fully get up those three.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
I think in the end, well, fantastic news coming out
of the Canterbury Cricket to camp. As we mentioned that you,
Henry Nichols, have been elevated to the captaincy. It is
a wonderful part of the game that that is. Yeah,
we've talked about lots of elements to it, but look
enjoy it. Go well, I'm sure you will. You'll be
brilliant at it and all the best for the very
first match this morning.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
Of course, Thank you very much. Isn't here Like I said,
I'm just very honest to you. I guess you know,
captain of Canterbury are province that obviously played a lot
for but you know, growing up in Canterbury. Yeah, to captain,
I guess decided as a real honors. So yeah, thank
you very much.
