Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, everybody's loving the Marty Cup. That's the boys, the
living ju belief of the girls. But history is being
made in twenty twenty five at Marty for Saint Thomas
of Canterbury and they have made the eighth final. Their
principal joins me, Steve Hart Steve, good morning.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Hello, Lizzie's nice to talk to.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
Well, this is an exciting time. What does this mean
to the school?

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Oh, it means a great deal. All of the boys
are back at school and teachers and families are incredibly
proud what the boys have achieved in getting their spot
in that Mardy Cup finals.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Under coach Patty Darling. It just doesn't happen though. I mean,
there's a lot of work that goes under the radar,
isn't there.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Oh? Absolutely, Petty's a very good coach and he's mentored
the boys to have a long, long, a strong sense
of belief and their ability that comes through a lot
of hard work and training. Like all the kids are
that row. But it's just been right to see our
boys go from strength to strength.

Speaker 1 (01:02):
So where has this come from? Because we know secondary
school sport is cyclical, but you have to have the
cycle going in the right direction.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yeah, I think over time our rowing program has built
up in the number of boys rowing, so it gives
you an opportunity to enter in the big boats the apes.
Traditionally we've done really well in the smaller boats and
particularly in the sculling events. So to see our boys
now have to have the right number of students or

(01:31):
a tipping point where we can focus on some of
these sweeting races, particularly the big boats, has been great.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Because that's the best thing about it, isn't it The
fact that you've got more people involved in the rowing program.
And we know physically rowing has to be one of
the most difficult sports that you undertake, just for the
regime that you have to go under and be so
professional really as an amateur, oh totally.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
And I think the rowing is wonderful and making finals
is wonderful and all of those kinds of things. But
at the end of the day, the thing that we
see that's the greatest reward is the building up the
boys character and discipline through rowing that's going to stick
with them for the rest of their lives. So that's
probably where we see the real and boys being involved

(02:17):
in rowing.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
And you look at Saint Thomas's. Look, we're lucky enough
to speak often to Andrew Olmatuni with the league back
to back New Zealand Secondary School League champions that you're
working in the rugby arena as well, and it just
seems that sport part of the scores going from strength
to strengths.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Yeah, it really is. It's been a great last five
years really across so many codes, and football and basketball
also is another couple of codes we've been doing really well.
And I think the secret tool really is not actually
focusing on the outcomes and it's a cliche, but really
focusing on the habits and the character traits, the right

(02:58):
disciplines in behind the themes that we know are going
to help our young our boys grow into really good
young men. And you know when you focus on those habits,
it's more often than not you do get the outcome.
So it's it's been a real focus right across all
our sport.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
And they've got to be prepared for life after school
as well. So the academic side is important.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
Oh, absolutely, we're super proud of our academic results, particularly
UI results which I shout from the rooftops, having seventy
two percent of our boys gain Yui certainly holds their
academic results right up there with the best of them,
So the two go hand in hand for me. And
we've got busy boys in sport, we also have them

(03:44):
achieving really well in their academic fields.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
It's not an easy life to live in these days,
as we know, all the different pressures, whether it be
social media whatever. But in the end, people thrive on structure,
don't they, and the ability to be valued by some
thing or someone or some group.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah, it just comes back to that sense of belonging
as well, Leslie. I think when the young men in
our score are connected into sport builds up that sense
of belonging through connection and it's where they thrive and
can be the best that they can be.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
So you'll be a very proud principle on that start line.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
Oh totally, yeah, you'll probably you'll probably hear me back
in chrissit.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
That Mardy Cup race set to go at four point fifty.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yeah, we're all very excited. Candy that down and between
now and then we've got seven crews an a finals.

Speaker 1 (04:37):
Steve Hart, thank you so much for joining us or
we share your excitement and we love the fact that
you've made some Mardy Cup history as well. Whatever the outcomers.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Yeah, thank you very much for calling us easily, and
hopefully the boys can go a little bit further still.
