Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, first of all, as you shar up, congratulations on
your selection for the White Funs. Just such an exciting time.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Yeah, deffinitely, I'm so excited and can't wait to play
for them.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
So talk to us abit. How you have got to
where you are now?
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Well, I guess growing up I watched my older brothers
play cricket. Just Mom and Dad would take me and
I'd run around the outfield as any little kidward and
then got them to throw me some balls in backyard cricket.
And I guess growing up I just played with the
boys from present point and that team, and then started
to come up here, And I guess I can't thank
(00:34):
my family enough the other reason I got here and
then Northwest, playing through age group and getting to where
I am now.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
So yeah, but it's a big move to make to
you know, you obviously had goals that you wanted to
get to and so you had to come up to Christ.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Yeah. Well, I just love cricket, I love sport in general,
so I'd do anything I could to play it. And
I guess for me, the best opportunity was up and
crashed it much girls cricket and Timorrows. So yeah, I
guess just for me and the enjoyment of it was
coming up here.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Have you fitted your hockey and your cricket and you're
swimming in Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Well I used to swim I think about seven times
a week for two hours. I used to swim during
the week and then swim in the mornings, actually drive
up here for training, and then on Saturday I'd swim
in the morning at about five am and then drive
up here for club cricket after. But I just loved it.
I don't know how I do it. I think about
it now, I don't know how I did it. But
I just loved playing sport and wanted to do as
(01:32):
much as I could of it.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
And now do you have to choose?
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah, so I stopped swimming about three years ago. Probably
the best movie I ever did for cricket allowed me
just to focus on cricket in the winter and then
hockey and hockey in the winter cricket in the summer. Sorry,
So yeah, just having one at a time. But yeah,
I might have to make a decision now. Probe we
go with the.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Cricket absolutely, And for the we were you when you
found out you were on the team. How'd you find out.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
I was after I'm able Tasman. Me and my partner
were just up on a holiday and we decided to
walk about twenty six k of the track and we
were walking up a hell and it was so steep,
and then I saw a message on my phone from
Ben saying can you give me a call? And at
the point I was quite relieved because it was quite
a big here, I was naked. Gave him a call
and then found out he was like, you're going to
(02:21):
be in the squad for the shril Anchor and Australian
tour and that's all I heard. I just stopped listening
after that. I was so excited. And then about a
week later I was like, so, what did you actually
say to me? Because I was just so excited and
didn't pick up any of it. But yeah, it was
just up a hell.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Really, did he give you any idea of what parts
you would play?
Speaker 2 (02:40):
No, he just said it's more of like an experience
to me. I just want to get out there and
do what I've been doing. Really, he hasn't said we're
but I'm happy to come in anywhere. I just want
to get an experience, but hopefully I'll get my devut,
which would be really exciting. I've grown up kind of
being hit the ball hard, and I guess every coach
is of told me to always have that. It's a
(03:02):
strength of mind, so why not use it. There's I
can be smart with hitting the ball hard, and I
can also hit the ball over the top, So yeah,
just using it at the right time. But I think
I'll be very nervous, but I think I'll just I
want to think about everyone that's got me to where
I am. Obviously I couldn't deal without them, So when
I'm singing the national anthem, I'll be very grateful and
very honored. But it hasn't come down to just me.
(03:24):
It's a lot of other people that have influenced it.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Fantastic and such a career path in women's cricket now,
isn't there. You know, you can make a living, you
can do something that you absolutely love.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Yeah, definitely. I think growing up cricket for me was
just fun and then sort of the pathways came New
Zealand under nineteen's having that first tournament. It kind of
just eye opener of cricket's actually a career like and
it's a fun career. I don't have to go sit
at a deskool day. I can enjoy what I'm doing
and earn money from it, just all annoyance. It's a
(03:54):
big thank you to everyone that I've paid with and
who's coached me along the way. I've got to this
moment and people forget that I grew up playing cricket
with all boys. There was no girl in the competition,
and they just made it really enjoyable for me. And
then coming up here, I've made lifelong friends through cricket,
So I think it's just thanking everyone that's been there
through the journey.
