Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now to choose the fact on the A n Z Premiership.
As our Tactics head into a very big match today's
out at Anura against the only unbeaten side, the Mystics,
Let's go to former Tactics captain, former Silver Fern. She
has done commentary for Sky could be back in the future.
Marie baud on good.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Morning, Good morning, Leslie, how are you.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Oh, really good? What are your overriding thoughts after three
rounds of A and Z Premiership twenty twenty five.

Speaker 2 (00:28):
I think it started the first couple rounds was quite clunky.
I would describe it just with teams trying to settle
into that two point shot, being strategic around when do
I use it, those sorts of things. But teams are
starting to settle now and it's I'd have to say,
I have been super impressed with the Steel so far.

(00:49):
They're really playing like a team working together. I love
the way that Kemy has slotted in down there. Although
a little bit sad for tactic expans of course, but yeah,
I think the Magic have really been the ones that
have struggled a little bit. So, as you say, massive
game today for the Tactics against the Mystics, gosh, it's

(01:10):
going to be a good game out there at run
you or.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Us When you look at the two points. It was
never going to be something that people were going to
go hooless bowldless because it has to fit in with
how the game is evolving quarter by quarter, half by half.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Oh correct, yeah, and it is. And it comes down
to that strategy and the way that your team wants
to play it. Are we best to take the one
and remain settled or when are the opportunities to do
the twos? You know, because if you are behind, it's
a good opportunity to catch up. So I think you
know that strategy does come into it, but you don't

(01:45):
want to take it away from the traditional of the
curing points because obviously it's a riskier shot, so to speak.
It's a lot further out so than the one point.
So do you risk it and take the two? Well?
Should I say risk? I say be brave and take
the two? Or do you to settle for the one
and then work really hard on defense to get a
turnover because then if you score, you've got two point strategy.

Speaker 1 (02:07):
When you look at the early stats. Okay, So Danelle
Wallam one hundred and thirty one goals from one hundred
and fifty three. She's running it a tad over eighty
five percent. Ali had done one twenty nine for one
thirty eight ninety three percent, Emelia Walmsley won twenty six
from one thirty four ninety four percent, and Charlie Bow
one hundred from one hundred and twenty eighty three. Martina

(02:28):
Salmon's the first of the tactic shooters coming in then
eighty from ninety one at eighty eight percent. Then we
have Ali Bird forty three from forty seven at ninety
one percent and not making the top lot to Pius
Selby Ricketts. So she's twenty nine from forty one at
seventy percent. But let's remember fifty four center pass receives

(02:49):
and seventy feed so she's doing a lot of work
as well. But is there that issue that Donna Wilkins
head coach has got about when to use Martina Salmon,
when to use Ali Bird. Clearly she wants to use
the pie hol We rock it out there most of
the time.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Yeah, it's an interesting one, isn't it, Because you know,
you've got to think about Tapie's workloads. Also, her job
is to score goals as well. So could the winger
Tachs be taking on more of that role. Could she
be asking the wing techs and centers and wing defenses
to step up more and get the ball into the
circle At the moment, I think like this is just

(03:24):
watching the Tectics last few games. They could actually get
it into that circle quicker. I do feel like both
Martina and Ali are there. We need to be brave
enough but to pop it in over to the shooters
because I feel like the space is there. And I
know it's a really hard one because there's that you
want to retain position, you want to make sure that

(03:45):
you score the goal. But there's got to be a
little bit more turning fully straight away and looking in
because one on one we know how great Alley was
last year, we know how great Martina is on that hold.
Can we utilize them a little bit more which would
take the less workload off to Pia doing all their

(04:05):
extra work outside the circle. Could we get it in
there sooner? Yes, I understand you want to retain posession,
but yes, also if we're doing so much work outside,
are we not best to get it in quicker? And
maybe that's just the way I played.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
No, No, Well you're the champion wing attack and mid quarter,
so that's why we've got you on to give your thoughts.
Just going back to the two point shot, Okay, So
the people that have utilized it the most twenty seven
Xavier tiuhi and has missed eighteen. She's running at a
thirty three percent success rate. Amelia an Echinasio has the best.
She's missed four from her fourteen, running at seventy one percent.

(04:41):
And you've got Velde Vui fifteen, Georgia heffnin sixteen, Alia
done eleven attempts and sitting quite low. You look at
Martina Salmon, she's tried five, has missed three on a
forty percent, and Alibird hasn't tried one at all, given
that's not really her core role. But yeah, and look,

(05:03):
it's hard, isn't it because it's such a short competition
two rounds only, so it is a well, it's a
wonderful innovation. It's not the ve all and the end all.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
And I suppose you're not going to play it an international,
So that's a hard one. Like great entertainment value if
they're going in, but if they're not going in it
can be takeaway from well traditional netball so to speak.
So definitely a time and a place and they will
only get better and more confident in that. I can
see it improving and I can see it getting better,
but it's probably not going to be amazing.

Speaker 1 (05:32):
Straight away, no, Okay. A couple of other things Off
the court. We have got a lot of quite a
few Australians playing in our competition, good or bad.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
In my roles outside of netball, I am about development
and developing out players, and I kind of feel like
if there's a young person there, they're only going to
get better if they're in the environments and have the opportunities.
Because I have very strong views on developing player and
especially our own players. The World Cup here for the

(06:03):
under twenty ones, it would be great to see more
of those players get that opportunity because that only helps
them when they move on to the tournament at the
end of the year. You know, those sorts of they
put our own out there, those young ones out there
being able to learn and grow, because it's we learn
and grow when you're out there on the court doing it.
My thoughts and opinion, I love the young players getting
out there and getting an opportunity.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Me too. I totally concur that it is the right time.
So and I'm not a fan of our good players
going over to Australia. Why because if they do that
then they're depriving younger players coming through playing against the
best as they were able to when they were coming
through the pathways. What would our competition be if everybody left.

(06:45):
People are saying, oh not many would get picked up.
It doesn't matter even a five go. That's terrible. They
shouldn't go over to Australia. They need to stay here.

Speaker 2 (06:53):
And there's lots of other sports that are kind of
struggling with that as well. You want your best players
and your country playing in league because that only helps
other players a one by playing beside them and to
growing as players and people. So yeah, I've probably am
similar bain to you, Leslie.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
I'm very passionate about it.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Whether it's very like it.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Well, we're capable of growing our own players. What we
did find after that trans Tasman was curtailed in twenty
fifteen that we had a dearth of people who were
either end of the courts, they were taken up by
imports players and we don't want that to happen again.
We're quite capable of growing our own players. We have
a fantastic netball system in this country and we just

(07:39):
have to trust it.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yeah, yeah, and it is and it may take a
you know, some time and a lot of trust and
a lot of investment, but you know, it's definitely going
to be worth it and we're growing our.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Own players absolutely right. Well, thank you very much, and
I've chucked a couple of eight. You're right at the
end there, But it needs to be talked about. We're
only hearing one side of it at the moment and
we do need to see and hear the other side.
But we are loving what IMZ Premiership twenty twenty five
is bringing to us and we can't wait for that
match today between the Tactics and the Mystics. It's a sellout.
