Speaker 1 (00:00):
A healthy serving of sports Canterbury's All Sport Breakfast with
Leslie Murdock and Mina ten Mega supporting local, friendly, que
owned and operated news Talks.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Mb his Talks, he'd be time to talk golf and
Mike Codney grace for us. Yeah, well, graces us with
your presence again, thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
No, it's a pleasure, very good.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Now, can you bring us up to date with all
the professionals playing around the world and.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
There'll be a heap of little It's a little bit
quieter this week than most weeks, but as we see,
Lydia's hanging on for dear life to make the cut
at the Chevron, which is the first major of the
woman's golf calendar. Daniel Hillier is tied second in China,
he's two behind the leader, and Consumer is tied forty eighth,

(00:48):
and Ryan Fox and Garrick Higo they are tied sixty
eighth in the Zuri Classic, that's a sort of a
unique little teams event that happens once a year. And
Momoka and Amelia having a holiday and I think the
women's golf comes back in at the start of May,
and then of course we're heading into the US Women's Open,
which we'll be looking forward to for those two girls

(01:11):
if they can crack a starting spot. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Absolutely. Now back here we have got the candiedy order
of merit deciding to a championship at clear Water.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Yes we do. So there's five thousand dollars worth in
development funds up for grabs. And this was a niche
of made by or Canary Golf probably about ten years
ago and it's just grown every year. It's fantastic. Actually,
it gives all the top golfers right through all sorts

(01:41):
of different grades as well. It gives the top gold
was an opportunity to play. It's almost like a FedEx
Cup situation, and it culminates with the Tour Championship, which,
as you say, is that clear order tomorrow. So there'll
be men's women's Masters, undernign teen boys, under sixteen girls

(02:02):
and boys and under thirteen boys and all will be
playing off for their year respective share of those monies.
Which it takes a bit to travel and develop a
golf career. So you know, we talk about the professionals
earning you know, a million a year and all this
sort of stuff, but it all starts somewhere and this
is where it starts for a lot of folks.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Sort of and they partner with people.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Yes, so it's quite a good initiative actually. So the
top players in each of those grades, you know, that's
the top eight men and women, the top four masters
men and women, and then obviously the you know the
boys and girls. But that partnered with sponsors of Canterbury
Golf personalities. Subob Charles is playing and it just spreads

(02:55):
I suppose, the happiness of the big occasion through to
some peo people that deserve recognition, you know, volunteers and
supporters and those people that work at no cost to
Canary Golf for the betterment of the Canary Golf. So
it just includes everybody. I think it's a great it's
a great thing. And one of the things about golf,

(03:19):
many many great things about golf is the handicapped system.
So it does allow people of lesser ability to sort
of compete with elite golfers. And for example, I mean
you think about the Warriors last night. You wouldn't find
many of the Canterbury Rugby League staff, all supporters and

(03:41):
sponsors turning up to play against the Warriors. You know,
at the end of the season. So golf handicaps have
made the game accessible to all boys, girls, men, women,
all abilities. They can all play against each other. It's fantastic.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
That's brilliant. So eighty nine year olds above Charles. He
doesn't have a handicap though, does he?

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Yes? I think he did. I saw the other day.
I think Bob's handicap is about a three point three
or something or other. For you know, I know he's
got the background, and he's got talent and all that
sort of stuff, but just the physical fitness required, you know,
for around the golf. It's enduring. He's enduring that age

(04:26):
to still be pretty competitive. It's wonderful.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
Doesn't use the hickory shaft clubs, does he?

Speaker 1 (04:33):
I think there's a Hickory Championship that I think it's
hosted at the christ Chicks Golf Club each year. Bob
is a great supporter of it. But I think, you know,
apart from those odd occasions, I think Bob would have
a pretty nice set of new golf clubs.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Absolutely, and he deserves it as well. The latest and
the best. Just before I let you go make final
word on the league last night, what a wonderful wonderful
day night.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Yeah, I thought it was sensational. And look from someone
who's spent sixteen or seventeen years of his life every
Saturday in the winter at the Eddington Showgrounds, I'm just
sorry to see it go and everything like that. But
as other people have said, you know, it's time to
move on, and I hope the City Council or whoever

(05:24):
does it, you know, looking after it, makes good use
of that, gets some money and sticks it into t
Kaha because that stadium, that new stadium will make christ Church.
I'm just certain that inner city will have such a buzz.

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Oh, there's no doubt about that. And I'm sure that
the people at the City Council know what they're doing.
They've worked with Cannoby Rugby League, They've certainly working with
Venues or Tatahi with the Crusaders, with Cannedby Rugby, with everybody.
Really the warrior is extending there coming down here, which
is fantastic and I'm sure they have got it under

(05:58):
control truly.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Yeah. Yeah. I actually was the chairman of Kennary Rugby
League when that lease was signed with the City Council
and never did we think at that time how it
would all turn out. It's funny that you think something's
going to go in one direction that goes in another.
But all in all, it's all for the better good,
Oh it is.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
And of course when they when you relinquished that lease,
you did get some compensation, didn't you.

Speaker 1 (06:26):
The and it'd all come about. Yeah, yeah, So this
was the original negotiation with the city council over that lease.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Yeah yeah, Well we'll get you back on when we
talk about that.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Yeah. Well, it's an interesting backstory, but we've got other
things to talk about.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
For Thanks very much, Mike. We always know that you
are a fond of information. We really appreciate it, and
have a fantastic weekend. Rest of the weekend. We've got
it all ahead of us.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
We will and go the Crusaders. For more from News
