Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well in association with the Elmward Training Company, Marty Fuller
and his team down there. It is welcome back to
Mike Taylor. I guess a lot of people know you
as Baggy, but you such an integral part of our
representative scene obviously member of the Pickers's Golf Club, and
it's great to have you back on air again.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Thanks for having me, Leslie. It's joy big.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Big news, wasn't it Cooper Moore doing the business again.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yes, I will sort of want to watch the updates
all last night to see how he is going. And
then I've got sent some videos of footage of what
happened and great to see he's just really putting his
name forward on the international scene there. Jeez, I'm very good.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Nine holes remaining. He was five strokes off the pace
and you look at what the conditions were like. They
were getting minute down pause and they were having to
cancel the day for a bit and then come back.
What a huge amount of concentration and skill required.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Definitely, and he's really at that level now where he
can just switch on and switch off when he needs to.
He's just so much mentally stronger now than what he
was a couple of years. That's very very good for
his age.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
People talk about Cooper More in revered tones, don't they.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
They do? Even I know he played with Mike Hendry
last year like the New Zealand Open I think it was,
and Mike Hendry said, everyone she used to that name.
He is going to be that good. So that's cut
off to Cooper More there, right.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
So he will be part of your representative scene this
year again, Cooper More.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Yes, if he is not playing for New Zealand somewhere
in the world, he will be part of our team differently. Yeah,
and I'm probably playing at number one. He played number
one last year too.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Right, Okay, all right, so what have we got coming up?

Speaker 2 (01:39):
We have, well, we've got to we start with our
first off, we have a sort of a trial sort
of Town versus Country, which is all the metro teams
from in town versus all the country combined teams, and
it's normally it sways towards more the town team. They
are probably the stronger, but it's means so much country
to actually try and win it. That's sort of the
first part. And then we've rolling two canary versus a ring,

(02:01):
which is sort of a usual fixture we have mid September.
Then we roll into South Islands five teams us A,
Ring Tasman, South London, Otago and then we've got a
new fixture this year. We're playing Wellington at Manamato Golf Club,
which is where the men's in provincial will be. So
we're having like a two weeks before we go up.

(02:22):
It's a sort of a rep match warm up, get
used to the conditions of what the course will be,
and then ride into an Provincials, which we're always a
chance for. Yeah. Oh, that's really looking forward to that.

Speaker 1 (02:33):
That's a good thing to do a wreki up there
before the big tournament.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Definitely, Yeah, especially when we haven't a few of the
guys that've never been to Manawatu before so have that
extra extra chance here. It's really helpful.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
Well that's the rep program. Talk us a little bit
about the Pegasus Golf Club. Why you love it so much?

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Oh, I've been there for probably I think I've been
there about fourteen years now, after I joined Wyamar before
that and then the earthquakes sort of ruined why married
for a couple of years, So we played out at
Pegas for Britain that had just opened and thought this
was fantastic, and I've been there since fourteen years since,
great great people in there. We're not a massive club

(03:15):
with like eight nine hundred people, were probably four hundred
or so, so it's a lot more tight and knit
and it's got all the facilities you want. We've got
driving range, simulator, practice facilities and the course is phenomenal
and that's why I love it. I don't think I'll
leave well.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
Fair enough in it for life. So how long have
you been playing golf for overall?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Oh? I played hockey as a junior as my main
sport when I was oh.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
And then striker, midfielder, defender.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Sort of center half, inside.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Forward okay, ceda upper.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yeah and yeah, when the body was getting a bit
tired and old, I sort of take up golf with
my mates and then it's been there ever since. Joined
up there by Mary and then getting a bit more
involved management and side of things, manage the Woody team,
our top penance team as well. Yep.

Speaker 1 (04:05):
So how long would you have been involved in that
next level and then Canterbury as well? How long that has.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
That helped I've been This will be my eighth year
involved in Canterbury management. I did one year as assistant
and then seven years as full time as manager, and
I just keep doing it because I love it. Just
the team camaraderie and the team spirit that you get
with these young guys that just in the golf they
show you what they can do. It's just, yeah, it's phenomenal.

(04:33):
So that's why I love that side of it.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Talking of phenomenon for phenomenal, you think about the COVID
situation and it's crazy, isn't it, Because it's actually been
kind in the end of golf.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
It's been very good for golf. I don't know what
the numbers are, but it's the memberships have ballooned and
a lot of clubs have actually stopped taking members on
because they two fall, which is it shows it's a
great sport.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
To be in now, whatever age you are, Oh exactly.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yes, and you can play it to whatever age. We've
got members at our club that are getting in their
eighties and they still come out and play twice a
week and they loved it, love the banter and everything
that goes with it.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Yeah. Absolutely, And I can't understand why. I mean, we've
talked about Cooper More must be special watching these young
players develop their game through the Pathway program. Are there
any other standout, really standout moments for you and golf
so far?

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Well, I'd have to look at Kazumikabori, who's he was
the pit of me of probably the best amateur in
New Zealand for a long time. He's now on the
dB World Tour, competing against some of the best players
in the world and going pretty good too. He's probably
the one that Cooper looks at and goes, I want

(05:50):
to be him, and he's very close to getting to
that level.

Speaker 1 (05:54):
Yeah, not far away? Is there's still only sixteen? That's
what I can't get over them. The maturity required to
win pieces of golfing history is just phenomenal.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
Oh. Yes, he's mature, way above his age, that's for sure. Yes.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
Now I finally have to ask you, have you scored
a hole in one?

Speaker 2 (06:13):
I have not, No, I do say to people though,
I did win a senior club championship and I'll take
that over a hole in one.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
Oh, very nice teamwork, that team ethic again just yes,
bromming through Yes, indeed, Oh very good. Look, we'll be
in touch as we get closer to that representative season.
But look, just keep loving what you're doing at Pegasu's
Golf Club and watching all these young, amazing golfers, and
in the meantime, keep practicing hard for that hole in one.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
I'll try, I keep trying.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Thank you, Leslie, Oh, Mike Taylor, it's been a pleasure again.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Thank you, thank you so yeah. For more from News
